I'm (predictably) seeing a tons of comments about how the hashtag campaign to bring Tommy back is 'pathetic' when in reality it's the most normal fandom behavior ever.

'Save Star Trek' was the first large fan organized campaign. In 1967-1968, NBC reported receiving over 100,000 letters demanding the show not be cancelled after speculation it wouldn't be renewed for a third season. Not only did it work, but both the creator, Gene Roddenberry, and the studio, directly credited this fan campaign from saving Star Trek from the chopping block. Today it remains one of the biggest and most beloved franchises on the planet.

In 2001, fans of the show Roswell (myself included!) mailed the network over 18,000 bottles of Tabasco sauce (iykyk) to protest the shows cancellation. And guess what? That also worked, and the chief of the network it aired on at the time (UPN) said it made a significant difference and is the sole reason the show was renewed for a second season.

So fans posting a few hundred hashtag comments asking a show to bring a character back, is actually the exact opposite of abnormal fan behavior.
