OFF YOUR CHEST - M. TOGATA (i)

pairing: mirio togata x fem!reader

summary: Mirio tears himself apart, and you're there to heal the pieces.

He splits another knuckle open.

It’s no different than any other exercise or training, but he’s different. He’s stronger now, and smarter but he’s still less. He punches the wall again, willing it to go through. For a second, he thinks he can feel the soft tendrils of the void past the surface beckoning him, urging him forth. It’s asking him where he’s been, that it missed him and that he’s back. For that second, it’s real. His hand is sinking through and he’s back.

But the rough texture of the wall sinks into the cuts he’s ripped into his skin and he’s pulling back, sucking in air through his teeth and withholding curses.

He cradles his right hand with his left, blood trailing down the grooves of the taught tendons on both battered hands.

Mirio’s chest is heaving, his breaths varying from deep to shallow, his heart rate erratic. The buzz in his pocket disrupts his stare at the red stains his punches had left.

It hurts to curl his hand around the device, but he does anyway. He wipes the other hand on his pants before responding.

Training! What’s up?

Mirio pockets his phone. He wants to manually rub the grime out of the cuts or even just leave them the way they are. The sting is a juxtaposition from how his life was before. No longer can he float in the nothingness, phase through infinity until he needs to come up for air.

He feels everything now.

He makes his way towards UA’s medical clinic. It’s late, past dinner at least, which means it’ll be empty save for one person. Recovery Girl doesn’t work the hours like she used to, not since you came in. The clinic after hours feels safe, secretive and his. You’re always there late, as far as Mirio knows. Since the first time he injured himself by pushing himself past his newfound limits (which were significantly less than what they used to be) you’d always been there when he’d sneak in.

Tonight, you were hunched over textbooks, highlighter dangling out of your mouth. If he could’ve, he would’ve lingered in the doorway to watch you. Instead, the few droplets of blood spilling from his hands alerted you of his presence. You peek over your shoulder at him before capping the marker and nodding for him to sit on one of the empty exam beds. It was routine.

“You outdid yourself this time,” You said as you cleaned the open wounds. He’d beaten the flesh raw, almost exposing bone and you wanted to scold him but you knew it was useless. He’d just brush you off with a shrug, a smile and tell you it’s not that big of a deal. Pain is part of getting stronger.

Mirio doesn’t respond. Instead, he chooses to let his eyes flick around the room. Recovery Girl’s absence is notable - no more jar of candy, and you’ve taken over her desk and littered it with your own knicknacks. Your textbooks, an All Might water bottle, a Kamui Woods pez dispenser. It’s cute, he thinks.

“Did you have a punching match with one of those hardening quirks?” You’re frowning as you pop a piece of jerky in your mouth. “Maybe Cementoss?”

“Cementoss,” he confirms, only because that would be the only way he’d have so much...particulate within the splits. Cementoss was made of rock, and Mirio would rather die than admit to you he was relentlessly punching a wall.

You snort, shaking your head as you chew. You both know he’s full of it, but you drop it. You always do.

A soft, blue glow escapes from underneath your hand. His hand feels fuzzy, like it's fallen asleep before it dissipates and you remove your hand, motioning for him to lift his other so you can begin the same process.

As you clean the other hand, Mirio watches you work. You ignore the weight of his gaze the best you can, focusing on repairing the skin and not how strong and smooth his fingers are. His hand is heavy in yours, and the glow of your quirk flickers as you lose focus imaging what his grip would feel like on you.

“Done,” you said, flicking your used gloves into the wastebasket by your feet. Mirio flexes his fingers. Healed. “Y’know, after all these visits,” You raise an eyebrow, “I think you owe me.”

Mirio looks up from his hands to tilt his head at you.

“Tell me how you really get these injuries,” you grab one of his hands loosely and run your thumb over the freshly regenerated skin.

He wasn’t expecting that.

Mirio gapes at you like a fish out of water, like you’re Thirteen and you’ve sucked all of the air out of the room. He pulls himself from your grip to rest his hands in his lap. He’s uncomfortable, uneasy now. He’s liked this place, liked you because questions weren’t asked that he had to give real answers to. It’s not betrayal that Mirio feels, it’s more like loss. It’s the loss that comes with the realization that you can’t outrun everything you want forever. With all the training, all the work Mirio had put in, he thought he could.

“They’re self-inflicted. The bruising, the wound placements. It’s like you’re training yourself to death.”

“It’s not like that - I’m fine, I promise!” Mirio throws his hands up in a defensive motion. He’s summoning the sunlight, the optimism and charm that swooned UA and motivated him to keep working, keep training, to save a million people. He can feel it churning in his chest, but it’s been pressed so deep he’s grasping at the edges and they don’t want to meet his fingertips.

Mirio knew you never believed his excuses - you knew he knew that and you’d been pulled thin between wanting to show concern and ask what was up and respecting his privacy. But at the previous state of his knuckles, you couldn’t drag your feet any longer.

You watch him, face soft and stoic. You’re not coddling, but you’re not cold either. He realizes that you’re just simply waiting.

“I just train too hard,” he gives in, just a little. You raise your eyebrows a fraction and he continues. “I have a lot to make up for, so I tend to overdo it!” He laughs it off - the injuries are a joke, truly. They’re funny to him.

“You get more banged up than Midoriya,” you look at him over the clear frame of the glasses you seem to only wear at the clinic. “How does your training get you more banged up than the other heroes?”

“I’m not a hero,” he’s quick to say, and it stings more than it should. He was, should’ve been, should be.

Your face is soft again, and it’s an art you’ve mastered over time. You’re good at composing your features to appear passive and static. In your many hero encounters, pity is the quickest way to lose trust. So you watch Mirio, with his soft smile and now long hair tied back at the nape of his neck. He’s analyzing you just as you are him, and you keep your eyes from flicking to his knuckles when you respond with, “Okay.”

His stomach is churning, still sour with his words but he rubs his hands on his thighs. Why are they so sweaty?

In his distracted state, Mirio doesn’t notice you scribbling down something on a notecard shaped like an anatomical heart. You hand it to him, knocking him out of his trance.

Seven digits, followed by the letters 3G, and four more digits.

“What’s this?” he asks. Obviously the first line is your number, but you lost him with the rest.

“My number,” you aren’t looking at him. Instead you choose to refold the sleeves of your white coat as you continue, “and the passcode to get into my dorm building.”

Mirio does white. The passcode? Why would he need that?”

“I can’t be staying here late every night in case you show up.” You hated trudging back to your dorm on the nights he didn’t show, both eyelids and textbooks weighing you down. “Just stop by my dorm if it’s late like this.”

Mirio opens his mouth but you cut him off.

“Floor 5F, my name is on the door.”

He closes his mouth and smiles, nodding and bowing in thanks. He doesn’t trust his voice, not right now. You’re packing up your textbooks as he exits the clinic.

It doesn’t hit him until he gets back to the 3A dorms that he doesn’t know your name.

He beats himself up about it the whole night. He wishes he could go into Tamaki’s room to distract himself, to ask him about the person who’s basically taken over Recovery Girl’s mantle. Tamaki frequented the clinic as well - used it as an excuse to get out of the heroics lessons and sleep. He’d definitely know your name, unlike his golden counterpart who visited her frequently and never thought to ask.

Mirio tried to comfort himself by thinking that maybe you didn’t know his name either. You’d never asked. But then again, Mirio is (was?) part of UA’s Big Three. The aftermath of the Shie Hassaikai was all anyone talked about for weeks. You’d definitely have to know who he was. Mirio Togata, the kid who lost his quirk. Le Million, the hero who gave and lost everything. You went to UA yourself - there was no way.

He didn’t want to be that sob story to you. But he was constantly coming to you with injuries - split knuckles, a dislocated shoulder, a torn achilles. Maybe he wasn’t exactly that sob story, but he knew you pitied him regardless. Maybe that’s why you always stayed so late - you felt bad for him.

The thoughts makes Mirio uncomfortable.

And so much so that to make himself feel better, he adds your number to his phone. Typing in the numbers, he thinks about how he likes that your handwriting was shitty. Another little thing you let him see, let him learn about you. In lieu of a name, he makes your contact name the stethoscope emoji. He laughs to himself when he saves the contact and types out a message:

How late is too late?

He hesitates, but hits send. It delivers, and after fifteen minutes, Mirio is worried he confused one of your twos for a seven or vice versa. Or, maybe he should’ve introduced himself instead of just sending you a basic question that revealed his identity in no way whatsoever. In the eighteenth minute, you buzz back a response.

Why?

Might break a bone tomorrow.

It only takes eleven minutes for you to respond this time, and Mirio hates that he’s counting.

🩺

I’ll be sure to eat breakfast then.

No later than midnight, tho.

Okay!

Seven minutes this time. He wasn’t expecting a response.

Mirio grins. A real one.

If you insist. Still might have a scratch or two, though. 😀

Two minutes. Mirio is oblivious to the fact that you are cringing hard at his emoji usage.

Angst Alphabet

Thanks @unfortunate-arrow for the tag!

I tag @aleksia-aries-hogwartsmystery @mira-shard @samshogwarts @that-ravenpuff-witch & whoever wants to do it and hasn’t been tagged yet.

A- Accident (Would they blame themselves if their s/o died or got into an accident?)

Depends on the situation. If it was related to the vault, both Alice and Charlie would blame themselves if their s/o died or got into an accident, though for different reasons.

Alice would blame herself because she dragged Charlie into that mess. Charlie would blame himself because he didn’t prevent Alice from doing whatever dangerous thing she did because he trusted her.

If it wasn’t related to the Vaults but to something linked to them, they would blame themselves. If it wasn’t related to something they are involved in, it depends. If Alice died doing her job as Curse-Breaker, Charlie would maybe blame himself a little, thinking that if he had pushed her a little toward taking the healer trainee position at the dragon reserve, she would still be fine. But if she got into an accident just doing her daily activities (shopping, walking around town, etc.), he’d be crushed, but wouldn’t blame himself. In Alice’s case, if it was either because of his job as a dragonologist or just while doing normal things, she wouldn’t blame herself, but she’d be devastated.

B- Bad Habits (What are some things that make their s/o mad, or irritated?)

One thing that annoys Alice, but she manages to hide it, is when Charlie suggests dragons as a solution to something where clearly dragons are NOT the answer, like when he suggested the use of dragons regarding the final vault that is probably in the lake.

For Charlie, what irritates him a little is Alice’s tendency to basically go looking for trouble. (Says the guy who goes in the forest looking for dragons…) He trusts her ability to defend herself, but he wished she would at least tell him what she’s planning. He doesn’t need her protection, he wants to stand by her side.

C- Crying (What would make them cry?)

Alice basically cries when she has an overflow of certain emotions. Too stressed? Cries. Too sad? Cries. Too angry/frustrated? Cries. (This means that any events creating those overflows will make her cry.) (Also certain songs and movie scenes can make her cry…)

For Charlie, if anything horrible happened to his family, Alice, and his friends.

D- Death (How do they react to their s/o's death?)

So many variables possible…

If they witnessed the other one’s death, I think they would cradle their loved one’s body, refusing to let go, refusing to accept the other is dead. I think that scene would haunt them for the rest of their lives.

If they were told of the other one’s death, Charlie would probably need to sit down and just remain in a state of shock for sometime, hoping someone will tell him it’s a joke or that Alice will walk through the door. Alice would faint, and spend the next days in bed, either sleeping or crying.

In either cases, they would go after whoever is responsible for the death (unless it was an accident). Charlie would probably cremate the murderer using a dragon. Alice would use all the curses (except the unforgivables) she knows on the murderer. After that, they would throw themselves in their work.

E- Emotion (what emotion do they tend to push away the most?)

For Alice, she pushes nearly all away (stiff upper lip…), the ones she pushes away the most are sadness and discouragement.

For Charlie… That’s harder. He doesn’t seem like someone who hides that many emotions. His feelings for Alice at the beginning… Maybe he tempers his excitement when it comes to dragons because he knows most don’t share his enthusiasm for them?

F- Fear (What is their biggest fear?)

Alice’s biggest fear is that everyone she cares about will suddenly disappear or turn their back on her. (Thanks, Jacob…)

For Charlie, I think while most people would expect his biggest fear to be dragon-related, I believe his biggest fear is most likely related to his family, something along the lines of them being dead or gone. (Remember when Fred & George went missing?)

G- Guilt (What's the biggest thing they feel guilty about?)

For Charlie, breaking up with Alice so she would take the MACUSA offer instead of the one from the Dragon Reserve in Romania. When Andre told him she was going to take the MACUSA offer anyway and ask him to have a long-distance relationship, he wanted to hit himself and find a time-turner to go back in time.

For Alice, in regards to her relationship with Charlie, maybe the fact that she discussed MACUSA’s offer and what she was planning to do with Andre before discussing it with Charlie? (Dragon Boy overheard part of that conversation, hence the breakup… though other things led to the breakup.) Something else she feels guilty about is dating another one of her friends after her breakup with Charlie, because she knows she won’t ever love him like he loves her. (They didn’t start dating straight away and he went after her.)

H- Heartbreak (What would cause them pain in the relationship? How would they deal during a break up?)

The thing that causes pain in their relationship is the fact they keep worrying about the other’s safety. Charlie can’t help but feel worried when Alice goes after a new vault, and Alice worries when Charlie follows her, as she would never forgive herself if anything happened. (It gets better in adulthood, their time apart allowing them to grow.)

Neither of them dealt really well with the breakup. Charlie regretted it as soon as he did it, Andre’s revelation exacerbating his guilt. As for Alice, she managed to maintain her cool in front of Charlie, but broke down the minute she was in her dorm. She cried during the train ride, to the point of falling asleep. Once home, she basically locked herself in her room. At some point, she decided to go clubbing to just forget about everything, but all it achieved is her friends worrying about her and her not feeling any different. That’s when one of her friends tell her how he feels about her, and they start seeing each other casually.

I- Injured (How do they handle themselves/each other when injured?)

They would take care of the other. (Finally! A short answer!)

J- Jittery (What part of their past makes them flinch or even worked up?)

For Alice, the Vaults and her brother’s disappearance.

For Charlie, what happened in the portrait vault and, later on, his break up with Alice.

K- Kill (Would they kill for revenge?)

Depends on the revenge, but if it’s to avenge someone’s death, definitely. Neither would use an unforgivable curse. Charlie would choose cremation by dragon, while Alice would probably use all the curse she knows to make her target suffer.

L- Lie (What's their tell for lying? How do they feel about lying to their s/o?)

Alice looks away when she lies, while Charlie fidgets with his hands.

As for lying to each other, neither feels great about it. Alice probably does it more often than Charlie, as she doesn’t always want him to follow her in her vault adventures to protect him.

M- Mistakes (How much do they want to fix the mistakes of their past?)

Well, if you read all the previous letters, you probably have figured out that Charlie would like to fix his mistake of breaking up with Alice. Except for that, I think he’s rather okay with learning from the mistakes in his past.

As for Alice, while she’s also more the kind to learn from her mistakes, the one thing she wish she could fix from the past is Rowan’s death.

N- Nightmare (How often do they have nightmares? What are they about? How do they deal with it?)

Charlie doesn’t often have nightmares, perhaps a bit more after the portrait vault’s event.

Alice, on the other hand, has had nightmares nearly every nights, thanks to her brother’s disappearance and the vaults. After finding her brother in the portrait vault, her nightmares don’t happen as often. The presence of some people also seem to calm her enough that she doesn’t have nightmares.

O- Outrage (What makes them angry?)

For Alice, bullies and injustice.

For Charlie, feeling powerless and probably also injustice? (Hello cliché!)

P- Pressure (What stresses them out to their breaking point?)

For Alice the responsibility of the vaults.

For Charlie, worrying about his little brothers (mostly Fred & George)

Q- Questions (Do they question their romantic ability)

All the time.

R- Rejection (How would they handle rejection?)

Romantic rejection, I think it would sting, but they would get over it since you can’t force someone to love you.

Rejection in other areas would probably hurt for a longer time, especially if it involved a lot of work prior to the rejection.

S- Scars (Battle or Self-inflicted)

One is a curse-breaker since basically the age of 11 and the other works with dragons. Of course they have scars, but none are self-inflicted.

T- Time (How would they react when finding out their s/o had limited time left to live?)

They would spend all that time with them, and try to create as many memories as possible.

U- Urge (How badly do they get the urge to see s/o after separating?)

Here I’m going to assume is when they are apart and not actually broken up. I’d say they don’t always need to be next to each other. The urge would appear if they saw their s/o talking to someone they see as potential competition.

V- Vent (How do they get rid of feelings they find unnecessary?)

Alice finds a place where she can be alone and lets it all out.

I imagine Charlie just grabbing a broom (or a dragon when he’s an adult) and flying around.

W- Wildcard (Random Headcanon)

After Charlie tells Alice why he really broke up with her, Alice will quickly realize that she still loves him, but won’t break up with the person she’s seeing at the time as she cares about that person and doesn’t want to hurt him.

X- X-ray (How readable are they? Can they see their s/o's emotions easily?)

Alice has basically no poker face, especially for people close to her. So Charlie can easily read her emotions, except when he suggested dragons to help with the final vault. He was too excited by his own idea to notice Alice’s face which clearly read as “are you for real?!”.

Alice isn’t as good as reading Charlie’s emotion, but not because he has a poker face, though I imagine he’s less readable than Alice. I think she can be so into her own head to figure out how to solve the current problem, she won’t notice the small emotional cues in Charlie’s face.

Y- Yearn (What do they want but can't have?)

Charlie: Get back with Alice after their break up.

Alice: Get back with Charlie after he tells her why he broke up with her.

Z- Zero (How do they spend their last moments with their s/o?)

In each other’s arms. (Let’s embrace the cliché.)

what is the colour of your hairbrush? Black

name a food you never eat? Meat. I'll have a tiny bit of chorizo whenever I'm in Spain but that's it.

are you typically too warm or too cold? too cold, my toes are freezing at the moment even tho I have woollen socks on

what were you doing 45 minutes ago? Reading a newspaper and drinking coffee.

how many blankets on your bed? One duvet, two blankets but I don't use all of them

describe your kitchen plates? I have so many... But the ones I use most for like proper food are plain white ones. My favorites are my granny's old dessert plates from the 70s, made of dark green glass.

describe your kitchen at the moment? Very messy. But in my defence I just baked.

do you have a favourite alcoholic drink? White wine and cider yes please

do you play cards? Not much

what colour is your car? I don't own one and my goal in life is to always live in a place where I don't need one

can you change a tire? My dad did teach me how to do it but it would be lying to say I could do it on my own

your favourite state? We don't have states here, but in US I think it would be California.

favourite job you've had? All the journalist jobs were great but I do love my current job and doing communications

Best Part of Me -Chapter 33

It’s six thirty in the morning when he steps out onto the front porch; barefoot and blurry eyed, still clad in just a pair of boxer briefs, cup of coffee in one hand and phone in the other. After Nik’s call he’d fallen into a restless sleep; dreaming of Dhaka and the night at Gaspar’s house when he’d been given the five million dollar deal. This time he’d made a different decision; willingly giving both Ovi and Esme up in exchange for money and his freedom. Asif had been there, sitting in a darkened corner; watching and listening. A pleased, victorious smile on his lips as his right hand man brought over his two new favourite playthings. They’d been drugged; minds and eyes hazy, their movements sluggish and uncoordinated. He’d had a change of heart at the last moment; offering his life in exchange for hers. Begging and pleading with Asif to ‘take me instead of the girl’. Asif had just laughed, then grabbed her by the hair and forced her to look at Tyler. Mocking her, telling her to look at the big, strong man now; crying like a baby and bargaining to save her. How did that make her feel? Knowing he could be so weak? That she was the one capable of making him that way? Is that really what she wanted? Someone so pathetic? Or did she want a real man like him. Then he’d his hand had moved to her throat; fingers digging into the soft flesh with enough power and pressure to steal her breath. And he’d kissed her. Savagely. Brutally.

And she’d kissed him back.

Tyler woke up breathless; near sobbing. Tears spilling down his cheeks, his heart thundering, and chest aching. Initially panicking at the unfamiliar surroundings and bolting upright, wide -almost terrified- eyes taking in everything around him; the furnishings, the color of the walls, his old friend sleeping soundly across the room, the cattle dog sitting beside the couch, curiously watching him. And it hadn’t been until he’d glanced out the window and caught sight of the mountain range, tree line, and brush that reality had finally settled in. He was no longer in Dhaka. Not at Gaspar’s outside the city limits. It was seven years ago. Not now. He’d turned down the offer and Asif hadn’t been there; he’d never laid a hand on her and he’d never kissed her. None of that had ever happened. Just his mind -broken and in tatters- playing tricks on him. They’d made it out of Bangladesh. She was saife. At home. In bed. THEIR bed.

He’d been tempted to call; just to hear her voice; needing that extra bit of reassurance that everything was fine. SHE was fine. But he knew what the mornings could be like; up before the sunrise with the baby, then tending to Declan and getting breakfast made and three kids up and ready for school. Ovi would be there; promising to keep an eye on things and lending a hand whenever it was needed. Kyle couldn’t be relied on; too busy getting his rocks off with Salena. Or whatever the hell her real name is. And Tyler had briefly wondered if getting into Kyle’s life had been part of whatever the new neighbor was up to; a way of weaseling her way into their lives for some fucked. The uncertainty eats at him; knowing that something isn’t quite right yet not being able to prove it or get the information that he needs. Way too many things pointing towards trouble; the Jeep with the stolen plates and the driver with the earpiece that had been watching him and the kids. Salena getting out of the passenger seat with a stack of folders under her arm and no record of her actually existing. All the ingredients, everything needed, to create a huge goddamn mess.

His head throbs. A mixture of lack of sleep and not eating properly. The cravings are intense. When he’d gone into the kitchen to make himself a coffee, he’d been greeted by all the whisky and scotch bottles that littered the counters and shelves; some empty, others half full, a handful still sealed. And his hands had been shaking as he’d considered it; one on a glass and the other around a bottle of scotch. His brain exhausted from dealing with the nightmare, trying to piece together the bullshit with the neighbor, and the call from Nik and the threats she’d made. A single wouldn’t hurt. That’s what the demon on his shoulder had been telling him. That he could stop at just one and walk away; get enough to satisfy the craving, get the taste of it on his lips and tongue. And he’d been close. So close. Seconds away from pouring the scotch into a glass. And then as quick as the desperation and the need had come, it had disappeared. Leaving him feeling weak and shamed and completely disgusted with himself.

Now he sits on the edge of the porch, feeling ground with his feet pressed against the damp earth. It had rained considerably last night; puddles of mud, lower temperatures, and a fresh and familiar earthy smell in its wake. Sadie hasn’t left his side since he’d arrived yesterday; now pressed tightly to him, chin resting on his thigh as he sips his coffee and checks his text messages and emails. Skipping over the angry rants left by Nik and the irritated ‘clearly out of fucks’- one that Yaz had contributed. Tyler hasn’t heard from him since New Zealand; the one other man taking it as a personal slight that he’d given it all up and walked away without even a glance back.

There’s dozens of emails from the contacts he’d reached out to; mercs wanting to work for him and offering their services, retired guys wanting to get back into the game, people who can supply him with weapons and ammo and every other accessory and piece of technology he can imagine. Even mail from former clients; guys he’d done jobs for and had been so impressed with his efficient -and successful- work. They’re pleased that he’s not only back in action, but that he’s actually still alive. They have resources for him; supplies, money, names and numbers of other high profile people that may need some work done. And he sees the emails that his wife has returned, smiling as he reads her replies; concise, confident, intelligent. As if she’s never spent a single moment away from the job; smoothly and effortlessly transitioning back into her old life.

It won’t be easy; balancing the job and running a business while trying to keep a marriage afloat and raise five kids. But there’s no doubt in his mind that they can do it. They’re stronger together than they are apart; they always have been. And if they can survive the past seven years -especially his addiction issues and a six month separation that should have broken them-, they can survive anything.

He sends a text message. Telling her how much he loves her. Misses her. How he can’t wait to see her. That he’s proud of her. Not just the way that she’s handling the business side of things, but EVERYTHING. The way she’s always fought for them. For HIM. How she raises his kids. Pouring his heart out with every letter that appears on the screen. He’d not normally that ‘type’, grand displays of affection and sincere, romantic words not his strong suit. But the nightmare -especially the way Asif had kissed her and she’d reciprocated- has left him feeling unsettled; needing to get things off his chest. The things he feels but always struggles to say.

She quickly sends a text in response. I LOVE YOU. SO MUCH. WE MISS YOU. Accompanied by a selfie of herself and Millie lying in the middle of their bed, both with sleepy smiles and messy hair and hands down the two most beautiful girls in the world. And he thinks of what Koen had said; about how lucky he is and that any woman who would stuck his side -through everything- was a woman worth holding onto him. She could have easily left that day on the bridge; he wouldn’t have blamed her if she did. But she’d ignored Nik and stuck around and put her own ass on line in an attempt to save his. And that’s nothing you easily thank someone for.

“You really are out of your damn mind,” Koen grumbles, as he wanders out onto the porch, his own cup of coffee in his hand; hair messy from sleep and eyes stilly glassy from all the booze he’d consumed. “Up at these hours of the morning.”

“This is pretty normal for me. Has been since I got clean.”

“Probably used to getting up with the rugrats,” Koen reasons, and takes a seat beside him. “Everything okay?” he nods down at the phone still clutched in Tyler’s hand. “At home?”

“Yeah. Everything’s good. Just checking in on everyone. Making sure they haven’t driven their mom crazy yet.”

“She must already be crazy. Having that many kids with the likes of you. How the hell she puts up with you is beyond me. I’d only be able to stand looking at that ugly mug for so long.”

“You must not look in the mirror very often.”

Koen smirks. “Smart ass. You always were quick with the shit head comments. Thought maybe all that oxygen you were deprived of might have slowed you down a bit. But here I am, dealing with your crap.”

“Admit it. You missed me.”

“About as much as I miss my two ex wives,” Koen scoffs, and then digs a playful elbow in Tyler’s ribs. “You miss it? Living out here?”

“Not really. I have a better life now. A nice place right on the beach. Tons of property. Perfect for raising kids. Wouldn’t have been able to do that out here. We probably would have tried, bt…” he sips his coffee and shrugs. “...we’re happy where we are.”

“Smartest thing you ever did; coming home. No better place to bring up a handful of kids, if you ask me. It’s weird as hell though,” he chuckles. “You doing the whole daddy thing all over again. Never thought I’d see the day, to be honest.”

“Neither did I,” Tyler admits, and he thinks about the picture he’d received just minutes before. Millie with her messy, unruly hair and those huge blue eyes that crinkle at the edges when she smiles. How’d he cried when she’d been born and a nurse had placed her in his arms; tears of both relief that she’d made it safely and immense gratitude that he’d been given that chance again.

After Austin had passed away and his marriage disintegrated, he’d thought that it was it for him. His life had been a mess...HE’D been a mess...and he couldn’t imagine meeting someone that he’d be able to have that kind of experience with. That he’d trust enough to let his guard down around and that could tolerate him and his bullshit long enough to actually fall in with him. That he’d ever find someone to fall in love WITH.

“She’s going to be a heart breaker that one,” Koen says. “The oldest. Those eyes of hers? All the boys are going to be tripping over themselves to get to her.”

Tyler frowns. “They’re going to have to get through me first.”

“Poor bastards. They’re going to be scared shitless when they walk up the house and you’re the first one out to greet them. I feel for them; trying to date a girl that has you as their father. They’d have no clue that you’re capable of tearing them in half.”

“Anyone touches either of my girls, no one will ever find their bodies. No boyfriends. No dates. No dances. None of that. No one is getting close to them. Ever.”

“Yeah, good luck with that,” Koen chuckles, and takes a swallow of coffee. And for several minutes they sit in silence; enjoying the feel of the breeze and the smell of fresh, damp earth.

“I hope you know what you’re doing,” his friend says. “With the whole merc business. I thought one brush with death would be enough. Apparently not.”

“Things will be different this time. I won’t have to go out in the field as much. Only if things really go to shit.”

“Don’t they always go to shit?”

“Sometimes. Dhaka was the worst, but it wasn’t the first time things went wrong and it won’t be the last. Hopefully we can avoid that level of shit show. I know what I’m doing. I’m not some rookie going into this blind. It was my life for years.”

“But why do you need it to be your life now? Look what you’ve got going for you. You’ve got a wife and little ones. Stability. Why put all that on the line for who you used to be?”

“You having second thoughts?”

“Nope. I said I’m in, I’m in. I’m just worried about you. I don’t you throwing your life away. I don’t want you losing your kids and that pretty little wife of yours. You got a thing going. A damn good thing. You don’t need to fucking that up.”

“It’s something I need to do,” Tyler says. “I need to get back out there. Get back that piece of who I was. I need to feel like I’m doing something worthwhile with my life.”

Koen frowns. “You don’t think you are? Doing something worthwhile?”

“What am I doing? I don’t have a nine to five job. No skills outside of what I learned in the military and on the job. I pick up odd shit here and there. Nothing steady. I spend more of my time in the gym or out in the water or spending time with my wife.”

“And you’re complaining about that last part? Spending time with the likes of her? What the fuck is wrong with you? Give her to someone who’d appreciate her then.”

“I’m not complaining. Far from it. I’m just saying there needs to be something more to this life. I feel like I need to be doing something more. I need to feel useful again. Like I’m not just washed up, broken down ex soldier with a drinking problem.”

“You’re a husband. And a dad. You help raise little human beings. There’s nothing useless about that. You should be sitting back enjoying your life. Appreciating what you have right in front of you. How you gonna feel if all this blows up in your face? If things go to hell and you lose everything? What the hell you gonna do then?”

“I don’t know. Put a gun in my mouth?”

Koen scowls. “I’m being serious, mate.”

“So am I.”

“All I’m hoping is that you got your shit together and you know what you’re doing. Because this is some serious stuff here. Getting back into being a merc. And you’ve got a lot to lose now. You’ve got everything to lose. That’s all I’m saying.”

Tyler smirks. “When did you become so sensitive and sentimental?”

“Don’t be a dick about this. I’m just worried about you. I don’t want you going back into this and losing what you have. Because you finally got your shit together and got a life that’s worth living.”

“I appreciate you worrying about me and all that, mate. I do. But I’ve got it under control. I know what I’m doing. This isn’t going to be like last time. I won’t let it be.”

Koen sighs. “You always have been a stubborn sonofabitch.”

“I know what I’m doing,” Tyler insists. “And I wouldn’t be doing it if I couldn’t handle it. Things will be alright. Esme and I are in this together. We’re on the same page. We’re not going to let this break us.”

“I hope not,” Koen says. “Because I don’t think you’d survive that.”

His flight arrives on time, touching down shortly before noon hour at Cooktown airport. She parks the truck on the tarmac and waits; a pair of aviator style sunglasses covering her eyes, fingernails drumming against the steering wheel. She gives the pilot a small wave and a pleasant smile when he nods in her direction; they’d met briefly two days before, when he’d come to the house after Tyler had sought out his help. Short and broad shouldered; brown hair cropped tightly to his head and kind green eyes that sparkle when he smiles. The quintessential ‘boy next door’ with his youthful wholesome good looks and his khaki pants and crisp white golf shirt. Quite the juxtaposition compared to Tyler; all power and muscle and the tattoos and scars that tell of a hard life spent living on the edge.

This is the furthest she’s ever gotten into the job; not only helping organize and run things, but the acquiring of weapons and ammo and other supplies, and the handling of money -big money- aside from her own payouts. It makes her anxious; knowing that she’s one of two people that others will come to now. Instead of being approached with work and offered jobs, now she’s in charge of finding and assigning them. Gathering intel had been one thing; she’d spent years honing those skills. Being boss is an entirely different animal all in itself.

So much for not getting ‘too involved’.

Four large and heavy locked trunks are placed in the bed of the truck, followed by several smaller duffle bags that are loaded into the back seat. All containing a shockingly generous amount of automatic and semi automatic rifles and handguns, various types of grenades and their launches, knives, and utility vests. Whatever immediate gear that a merc would meet. All would be placed in a storage facility on the outskirts of town, save for a handful that would be kept in the two locked and secure gun lockers that already exist at home; one in their garage and the other in the attic.

Once things are safely loaded, an envelope of money is exchanged. Everything being handled off the books; no paper trail that can connect the pilot to the or the very illegal transport of weapons. You never know who is watching. Now that word has gotten out and spread like wildfire, support and interest are pouring in. But it isn’t just the good-intentioned that are paying attention; a man like Tyler Rake burns a lot of bridges and makes a lot of enemies. Evil, dangerous people who feel as if he wronged them and have been holding onto grudges and fantasizing about revenge.

“Hey,” she cheerfully greets, as he slides into the passenger seat. “How was the flight? How…?”

His mouth is on hers before she gets the rest of the words out; a hand tangling in her hair as he aggressively pulls her into him. The kiss is long and soft and sweet at first; his lips bearing a hint of coffee and a touch of mint. But then things quickly take a more intense turn; his tongue pushing its way way into her mouth, the miss much more ravenous and needy. Desperate.

“Wow…” she breathes, when he pulls away, forehead briefly resting against hers before his lips brush against the bridge of her nose. “...what was that for?”

“I wanted to kiss my wife. That’s not allowed?”

“Of course it’s allowed. And encouraged. But that was...intense. That wasn’t your usual ‘back after only twenty four hours’ kiss. That was your ‘I’ve been gone for two or three weeks’ kind of kiss.”

“Guess I just missed you.” he reasons, and then presses his lips to her temple before settling back into his seat and reaching for the belt.

“Okay, something is going on. You kissed me like THAT and you’re letting me drive your truck?”

“You had to drive it here, didn’t you?”

“Yeah, but you’re here now and it’s your baby and usually…”

“It’s just a truck,” he says with a shrug, and buckles his seat belt.

“Something is definitely going on with you.”

Tyler chuckles. “There’s nothing. I didn’t sleep well last night and I have a killer headache and it’s probably just better if you drive. That’s all.”

“Do you have a killer headache because…?”

“I wasn’t drinking iof that’s what you’re going to ask. I stayed sober. I told you I wasn’t going to be like that again and I meant it.”

“What was the dream about?”

“Can’t remember. I just know it was fucked and I don’t want to have it again.”

Her eyes narrow as she watches him, noticing the way he grimaces when he stretches his legs out in front of him and the frown on his face as he rubs at his troublesome knee. The scar is long and jagged; starting three inches above and stopping four inches below. There’d been complications; the surgeon discovering more damage, bone fragments and scar tissue than he’d initially expected and having to not only replace the knee, but repair ligaments and tendons that were nearly severed.

“What’s this about?” She reaches over to tussle his hair. The length on the top is the same as when he’d left, but the sides and back now shaved as close to the skin as possible. High and tight; a Marine cut.

“Just something I thought I’d try.”

“You’re going back to the old hair aren’t you,” a slow smile spreads across his face. “You’re going to let the top grow out.”

“It’s the look you liked the most, yeah? Now you can’t say I never do anything nice for you.”

“Baby…” she leans across the space between their seats and presses a kiss to his cheek; his beard still full yet trimmed and tidier. “...you’re the best. You know how to keep your girl happy.”

He grins. “Sometimes.”

“All the time,” she says, and places a kiss to the corner of his mouth before settling back into her seat and starting the ignition. A companionable silence falling between them as they pull out of the hanger and head for home.

“ARE you okay?” Esme asks several minutes later.

“Fine,” Tyler replies, his head tilted back against his seat, eyes closed; one hand on his stomach, the other on her thigh, thumb continuously brushing against her skin. “Just tired. It was a long night. Couldn’t fall asleep and when I did, I had that fucked up dream.” “And you don’t remember what it was about?”

“Nope. It wasn’t one of the usual ones, though. Never had this one before. But it was messed up. I remember that much.”

How do you explain a dream like THAT? That you’d been willing to sacrifice someone’s life for five million dollars; knowing that a drug lord would have used and abused them in horrific and degrading ways before killing them? She doesn’t even know about the whole truth about what happened at Gaspar’s. For nearly seven years she’d assumed that the deal had been for Ovi; that Gaspar had been hell bent on killing him and Tyler refused to give the kid up and all hell broke loose.

“Hmmm…” she turns her full attention to the road, chewing absentmindedly on her bottom lip. She’s used to this; his constant need to keep everything inside and shoulder every single burden on his own. It’s his protective nature; not wanting to add any extra stress or worry to her already overflowing plate. “...and things went okay?”

“Everything went fine. Got Koen on board, got everything we need to get started. Things went good. Place doesn’t even look the same anymore. Not inside, anyway.”

“And he’s still okay with letting us stay there?”

“Yup. Just said to make sure we change the sheets. Said he doesn’t want to be lying in our ‘business’.”

She laughs at that.

“Did Nik call you?” he casually and calmly asks, hand sliding onto the inside of her thigh; fingertips against the bare skin just below the hem of her shorts.

“Nik? Why should she call me? I’m probably the last person she wants to hear from after that night at the restaurant. I’m sure she blames me for Kyle calling things off.”

“Well in all fairness, you did kind of instigate the whole thing. Hooking him with the neighbor. Even after I told you to stay out of it and mind your business.”

“Hey, it’s not my fault it was instant lust between them. We know all about that, don’t we.”

He grins.

“But no. She didn’t call. That’s kind of a weird thing to ask, About Nik.”

“She called me,” Tyler admits, and he notices the way both of her brows arch. “Last night. I only answered because I thought it was you and that maybe something was wrong at home.”

“Why would she call you? Was she having a lonely night? Wanted to have phone sex?”

“I didn’t have the energy. I’d already had phone sex with you, so…”

“Boy that must have broken her heart; the fact you keep shooting her down. Maybe she feels if she keeps bugging you enough she’ll wear you down and you’ll give in.”

“Not gonna happen. I already told you; I’m not a cheater. I don’t want anyone else but you. And she actually called to give me shit. I guess word travels faster than we thought it would.”

“Well it was going to happen sooner or later.”

“Later would have been nice.”

“I take it she wasn’t happy.”

Tyler smirks. “That’s one way of putting it. She lost her shit. She’s taking it personally; thinks I did it to purposefully fuck her over and put her out of business.”

“Mercs are jumping ship left, right, and center. I can’t keep up with all the messages and the emails. She’s not going to have anyone left.”

He shrugs. “Guess she shouldn’t have let things go to shit.”

“They went to shit seven years ago when she made the decisions she did. That should have been the end of it; when she was so willing to leave you on the bridge to die. She totally fucked you. And not in a good way. Like whose dick is she sucking that she keeps her job?”

A grin tugs at the corner of Tyler’s mouth. “You’re feisty today.”

“I hope you do put her out of business. I hope she loses everything. Because she fucking deserves it. She’s done a lot of shitty things and I’m glad karma is finally biting her in the ass.”

“She’s not going to go down without a fight. She’s pretty pissed. And pretty determined to make my life hell.”

Esme frowns. “She said that? That she’s going to make your life hell?”

“Not in so many words.”

“Well what did she say? Did she threaten to show up and kick your ass? I’d love to see her try.”

“She just said some shit. About us. When I said something about how my wife and my kids will always be around, she made a comment about how she’ll ‘see about that’.”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

“I don’t know. But I told her I wasn’t fucking around. Don’t threaten my family. It didn’t end well for the last person who tried it and it won’t end well for her.” “Nk hardly seems the type that would hurt kids. There’s no doubt in my mind she’d come for me. She’s been wanting me out of the picture for a long time. But to do something to hurt the kids? I can’t see her stooping that low.”

“I don’t think it was a physical threat. Nik’s all about screwing with peoples’ heads. Look what she did to me. She knew I was messed up and she knew exactly what buttons to push to get me to do what she wanted.”

“You think that’s what it is? Psychological warfare? Because she’s never gone up against me and that's a battle I will not lose. I’ve gone up against bigger and better than her and I’m still here to tell about it. Besides, what could she possibly say that would bother me that much? After everything I’ve been through in the past seven years? Nothing could unnerve me that badly that it would screw things up between us. Look at everything we’ve been through. That shit we’ve survived. She doesn’t even know HALF of it. Trust me, there’s nothing she could say that could hurt us.”

“It’s Nik. She’ll make shit up if she has to.”

“She can save her breath. I know all your deepest and darkest secrets. So if she thinks she has something to surprise me, she’s got another thing coming. I do, right?” she casts him a sidelong glance. “Know everything I need to know?”

“There’s nothing I haven’t told you. I told you most of it in the first couple of days. Everything else you’ve lived through with me.”

“Then let her make shit up,” Esme shrugs. “I think I trust you word over hers. After everything she’s pulled, I wouldn’t believe a goddamn word she says. And the fact she’d even threaten you? Like, she knows who she’s talking to, right? Someone who killed two people with one garden rake. That’s really who she wants to go up against?”

“She probably thinks I won’t retaliate. I don’t give a shit what history we have. You don’t threaten my family. Ever.”

“Normally I’d tell you you’re being paranoid and you’re way too overprotective, but this side of you is kind of hot.”

He grins. “Kind of?”

“Totally hot,” she admits, then giggles and shoves his hand away when he slides it towards her crotch. “Seriously?”

“Seriously.”

“What’s gotten into you the last few days? You’re a little...I don’t know...assertive...when it comes to the whole sex thing.”

“I’m not allowed to want to have sex with my life? First I can’t kiss you a certain way, now I can’t have sex with you either?”

“It’s not that you can’t. You’re just a little more...demanding...than usual. Needy. Needy is a good word for it. And we’ve always had a lot of sex but lately, you’ve just been...extra...about it.”

He gives in an amused smirk. “I’m extra?”

“In a good way,” she assures him.

“Look, I love you. You’re beautiful. You’re sexy. And I want to fuck you. So…” his hand once again slides along her thigh, slipping under the leg opening of her shorts. Fingertips grazing against the edge of her simple cotton pants. “...when we get home, that’s what we’re going to do. Fuck.”

“Addie and Declan are there. Ovi’s watching them.”

“Send them to his place. Tell him we need half an hour kid free. He’ll know what that means.”

“A half an hour?” she playfully inquires. “When has it only taken half an hour?”

“I’m in a mood,” he replies, and slides a finger under her panties, and she swallows noisily and her entire body tenses when it pushes through her folds and grazes over her clit.

“Obviously. And you’re going to put me in a mood!” She squeezes her thighs shut, trapping his hand between them. “Stop! I’m trying to drive!”

“Just relax. Let me do this.”

“You’re crazy!”

“Come on…” he grins. “...do it. I know you want to. It’s something we’ve never done before. You can’t tell me you don’t want to try. What’s the worst that could happen?”

“Oh I don’t know, Tyler. I could crash and kill us both and our kids would be orphans. That’s pretty much the worst.”

“Do it…” he encourages. “...open your legs...let me do this for you...let me make you feel good.”

She glances at him out of the corner of her eyes.

“Our little secret,” his grin widens. “I promise.”

“You're insane. You really are.”

“Maybe. But I can feel how wet you are. “I know you want it just as much as I do. Just do it. Just this once. Let me to this for you.”

She sighs heavily, thighs releasing the grip on his hand.

“That’s my girl,” he praises, swallowing noisily when he slips another finger between her folds, watching her face as the tips press against her clit. Noticing the flush that creeps into her cheeks and the tips of her ears, the way her teeth dig painfully into her bottom lip.

“You really are a bad influence,” she half-heartedly complains.

“Yeah,” he agrees, as his fingers continue their ministrations. “But you love me though.”

She doesn’t even attempt to deny it.

Thank you for the tag @atypical-snowman !! <3 These are all really great questions, I can’t wait to dive in.

1. At what age did you start writing fanfiction?

I started writing fanfiction at the ripe old age of seven. It was second grade, and my teacher asked us to write short stories. Most of my classmates wrote about talking pets, or just a fun day in the life of a character with a name one letter different from their own. ... I wrote a self-insert Peter Pan fanfic. I turned it in, and the teacher absolutely loved it. She made me read it in front of the entire class, which was both very embarrassing and very rewarding. From that moment on, I was hooked on writing and the rush it gave me. I kept writing fanfiction, though I didn’t know it by that name at the time, as well as my own original work. It wasn’t until I discovered Quizilla in eighth grade that I published my first fic - another self-insert, this time for Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare. I kept writing original works through high school, then picked up the fanfiction gauntlet again when I was nineteen and have kept on with it since.

2. Who is your favorite author?

Oh god oh god I can’t choose one. Uhhhhhhh.... Okay. I’m just gonna list some people who I’m really super into reading right now from the IronStrange fandom, though there are so many more writers who I enjoy: twobettafish (doesn’t everyone love them?), @visionarygalaxy, @tonystarrks, @incorrect-ironstrange, and @meshkol. I need to give a shoutout to @turtleoftheabyss ( @turtlewritesthings ), whom I adore as a writer, an alpha/beta, and a person. And also shoutout to aroacewritingplace from the Parley ship, without whom my ao3 notifications would be a lot less angsty and wonderful.

3. What is your favorite kind of scene to write?

It really depends on what I’m feeling. If I’m feeling happy, I write fluff. But if I’m feeling angsty I’m taking all you bitches down with me ;)

4. What is your favorite fanfic?

Nope nope nope nope NOPE. I hate this question. Okay, so, I love a lot of the heavy hitters of course: From the Top, Citizen Erased, and literally anything twobettafish writes. But here are some of the fics that I love and think are underappreciated, just going by kudos counts: I am here by polyommatusblues R&R by @turtlewritesthings tap dancing on a land mine by Culurien Of Madness and Carnage by @visionarygalaxy Those are all IronStrange, of course. Watersports. To each their own, it’s just not my kink. Everything else is pretty much fair game.

6. What AU do you wish you could write, but feel you won’t manage?

I've never made the decision not to pursue a fic because I thought I couldn’t pull it off - all of my plot bunnies sitting in their graves ended up there because I didn’t have time to feed them.

7. Do you outline or write as you go?

Oneshots I plan down to the detail. Multichapter fics are trickier, though. My brain will latch onto a few key scenes or twists, and as I write the rest all falls into place around it.

8. What has been your favorite story to write so far? Without Light , which I wrote for an IronStrange gift exchange to @ironstrange-is-the-endgame . It’s the longest oneshot I’ve ever done, and it required so much medical research and emotional energy. I really appreciate how it pushed me as a writer, to stick with something that wasn’t coming as easily to me as other fics usually do, and I love the end result.

9. Do you prefer to write one-shots or multi-chapters? Why?

I like writing oneshots in a series. I’m telling a long story of one set of characters, so there’s room for readers to explore them and their relationships to one another, but I’m not chronologically limited like I would be in a multichapter fic. If I want to write Tony and Stephen married with a kid I can, and then tomorrow when inspiration strikes I can jump back to their first date.

10. Which is your favorite kind of comment?

Each and every comment I receive absolutely makes my day. That being said, I particularly love when readers tell me their favorite lines, because a lot of times they’re mine too. Sometimes it takes me literal hours of writing, revising, and revisiting a sentence to get it just right, so when someone takes the time to tell me how much they loved it I feel like the results were worth the effort.

11. Why did you start writing fan fiction? Why are you still writing?

a: Who is one person you’ve always admired? What makes them so admirable?

-- I’ve always admired writers, and those writers who seem to have so many people waiting for their new chapters. Famous writers who seem to have so many people waiting for their new books. Yet, it fuels me to wanna do better. To maybe get to that point because, they’re just, so great. Like, I don’t really have a good reason?? It’s just one of those types of things.

b: Describe your ideal home/living space. Is it similar to where you live now?

-- This is going to sound really gay, and really cheesy but, anywhere that I’ll be able to wake up next to the one I love, it’s my ideal living space.

c: Name 3 things you’ve done that you’re proud of.

-- I have friends, and I’m talking more than just three or four. I have a whole group of friends that love me and care for me.

-- I have a job, a pretty good job if I do say so myself. I get to work at a place that I love, work with people who are amazing, and it just makes me so happy.

-- I’m happy, honestly. That’s something to be proud of, because it’s something I always struggled with. I’m actually, really, honestly happy.

d: Are you the person you wanted to be when you were younger?

-- No, not exactly, but, I’m happy with who I am right now.

-- A piece of shit. No, okay I’m kidding. They’re pretty cool honestly, we’ve got a lot in common. They’re probably one of the closest people to me if I’m being real honest.

-- This one’s going to be tough, because to me, all I have are weaknesses... Here’s what I think my strengths and weaknesses are though.

Strengths

-- I’m friendly.

-- I’m pretty good at reading body language

-- I’m good with kids, and honestly, it’s a strength, because not everyone is.

-- I’m loyal, you’ll always catch me there for my friends and sticking up for them.

-- I would consider myself a good person, yeah. I mean, I think the real difference would be the way you view the world? It all depends on what you want to see the world become.

h: How would you define love? Do you believe love is real?

-- Absolutely I believe love is real. It’s one of those feelings that’s hard to describe. But it makes you all fuzzy inside, and it makes you smile more. It’s almost like that feeling of when you were a kid and you had your first crush, and you didn’t know what to do or feel so you just didn’t talk about it. It’s that kind of feeling, and let me tell you, it’s so warm, and happy, and I can’t get enough of this feeling.

-- I do like the fact that I’m friendly honestly. I’m also pretty shy though, so I don’t know if that’s something I like that much but?? I think it’s good enough.

j: What was something you enjoyed doing when you were younger? Is it something you still enjoy?

-- I don’t read as much as I’d like to anymore honestly. I should definitely start reading some more again. Though I always have trouble finding books that I like enough to even start reading.

-- Yes, I really do think people can change. It just depends if they actually WANT to change. That’s a completely different story honestly.

-- My eyes, actually.

-- I’m all for everyone having their own opinions honestly. I’m really happy if I can be friends with someone who has differing opinions.

Markup of Our HTML Contact Form

The first step towards creating our own contact form is to code the markup. We will start doing that once we have a list of all the elements that we want inside our form. We'll need an input field for the name of the person who is contacting us, and we'll need a field for their email address so that we can send a reply back to them if the need arises. We'll also need an input field for the reason people are contacting you and a textarea where users can type their message.

If the website you are managing is very popular, you'll be getting a lot of emails through the contact form. To make sure that the right people get to read those emails and respond quickly, you need a couple more fields. For instance, you could add a field that can determine which department the visitor wants to contact like marketing, support, or billing. This information can later be used to route the email appropriately. Ultimately, that might help you reply more quickly and sort the emails more efficiently.

How many fields you add to the contact form depends on the type of website you run, but make sure you don't overdo it. Forcing visitors to fill out too many details might discourage them from contacting you altogether.

Let's write the HTML code to add all the fields I just mentioned into our contact form.

Before proceeding any further, I would like to quickly summarize the meaning of some important attributes in the above markup. The action attribute in the form determines where the form data needs to be sent. If you don't have an action attribute, the data is sent back to the same URL. Here we've used contact.php, so the form data will be sent to that script.

The name attribute for different input elements in the form is used to access the element values on the server side. For example, in the above form, you can get the name of the visitor contacting you using $_POST['visitor_name'] in contact.php.

We use the placeholder attribute to give users a basic idea of the expected input for each field in the form. The required attribute ensures that no important field is left blank before the user hits the submit button on the form.

The pattern attribute is used to enforce some rules on the kinds of values that can go inside certain fields. In our case, we only allow users to use letters and the space character in the names they submit. We also limit the total number of acceptable characters to anything from 3 to 20 inclusive. The pattern that you use will depend on the type of input that you want from users.

The following CodePen demo shows us what our contact form looks like with the above markup and a little bit of CSS.

Making Our HTML Contact Form Functional Using PHP

Right now, our form doesn't do anything useful. Visitors can fill it out and hit the send message button, but we won't receive anything because there is no server-side code to handle the information provided by the form. In this section, we'll make our contact form functional using PHP.

Begin by creating a contact.php file and putting the following code inside it.

We have already done some client-side validation of user input. However, it's always safer to do server-side validation as well. We use the filter_var() function to sanitize the name provided by the user. In a similar fashion, we also sanitize the value of $email_title and $concerned_department. You can use the filter_var()function to validate or sanitize all types of user input. We also use the htmlspecialchars() function to encode all the special HTML characters in the visitor message sent to us.

The value of $recipient is based on the value of the variable $concerned_department. This way, we make sure that only people who are actually supposed to look into the matter receive the email.

Also, we've used the $email_body variable to format the email body which will be the main content of the email. As we are sending an email in the HTML format, we've used HTML to format the email body content.

Finally, we use the mail() function to send an email which includes the information the visitor wanted us to know. Upon successful delivery of the email, we let the visitors know that we have received their email and that they will be contacted soon.

Security is paramount when you are dealing with user data or input. Whether you should validate or sanitize the user input depends on what the input is and how you want to use it. Validation simply checks if the user input follows a certain set of rules. For example, validation could check that the name of a person does not contain any numbers. Sanitization is used to remove any offending characters that pose a security risk. For example, a malicious user trying to contact you through the form might add a script tag in the textarea to get you to download a harmful script. This is particularly worrisome when your website has public forums accessible by everyone.

However, you have to be very careful when getting rid of unwanted characters in user input. For example, you might decide to use filter_var($user_input, FILTER_SANITIZE_STRING); on some input to strip all tags and encode special characters. However, this flag also strips harmless character input by legitimate users. Here is an example:

If your website has a lot of maths-related topics, it will be relatively common for users to write < or > in contact forms or forum posts. Using the FILTER_SANITIZE_STRING flag with the filter_var() function will strip necessary information from the message in this case.

The point I am trying to make is that even though you should always validate or sanitize user data, make sure that you are not stripping away crucial information in the process.

Final Thoughts

Creating a basic contact form in PHP is pretty simple. You begin by writing the HTML needed to create input elements for information like the user's name, email address, phone number, etc. The next step is writing CSS to make sure the contact form blends in perfectly with the rest of the website. The final step involves writing the PHP code that will take the information from the contact form and securely mail it to you.

The aim is to make sure that different form elements are laid out in a way that does not confuse people and the user input is sanitized and validated before you mail it to concerned parties. If they went through hours (perhaps days/weeks/months) of drafting, writing, editing, and formatting, a quick comment from the reader really doesn’t hurt !! It’s the most rewarding thing a writer could ever ask for. As an amateur author myself, being on the receiving end is the thing that keeps me going !! I promise you, I don’t take any of it for granted. Your words seriously resonate with me, and it’s a huge motivator for me !! Much Ado About SPN

Friends, writers, tumblr people, lend me your ears...

For those of you who do not know, I (Angel, @whispersandwhiskerburn) am a teacher. I love to teach writing and reading to students—and I love reading and writing fanfiction. So, when I reached the AMAZING milestone of 1.5K FOLLOWERS, I decided to celebrate with my fellow writers with a challenge that marries the two—my love of teaching literature and writing and my love of spn fanfiction.

Every writer goes on a journey. They start with the ABCs and it's amazing how many wonders just 26 letters can create—it's all about how you use them. Of course, reading helps; good readers become good writers, and good writers are always looking for a way to challenge themselves, in reading and writing. One of the most challenging, most famous, and best writers that ever lived made wonderful stories that are read and taught to this day—all with the same 26 letters that we use.

So, that's the inspiration for this challenge. The letters of the alphabet—and one of the greatest writers of all time: William Shakespeare.

The idea is to use at least two (all three if you can) of the alphabet prompts AND the Shakespeare line—you do NOT have to use Shakespeare's wording, just be inspired by the theme of the quote.

Rules and Accepting the Challenge:

1. Must be following me....it's a follower celebration, so yeah. New followers are welcome though, so feel free to follow, then ask. :)

2. Send an ASK with your requested prompt by letter and quote number. First come, first choice—and there are only 25 prompts (I deleted x) so you'd better hurry! I want to give everyone a chance to sign up, so don't ask for a second prompt until after March 10th, please! NOTE: If you ask anonymously...you're silly. I can't sign you up if I don't know who you are?

3. Any character from the show is welcome, but not cast members for this challenge (Dean/Sam/Castiel etc., not Jensen/Jared/Misha). Ships are fine, (exceptions: no non-con and no Samifer, since Lucifer totally raped him) but reader-inserts are preferred.

4. Any genre: SFW, NSFW, AU, angst, fluff, smut, or any combination thereof, just please tag appropriately.

5. No maximum length limit, but if it is more than 800 words, include a read-more link, or I won't reblog it. Should be at least 500 words. One shots, drabbles, series pieces, combinations with other challenges/requests—all are totally cool.

6. Tag me (@whispersandwhiskerburn) in the header somewhere. I will reblog these with feedback and add them all to a masterlist. I want to post the masterlist on Shakespeare's birthday which is celebrated on April 23rd, so the deadline for fics is April 20th. Yesterday I was involved in an accident, I was stopped on the motorway when a car was going too fast crashed right into the back of me, pushing me into the van in front, the recovery guy who picked my vehicle up said it prob will be written off due to its age.
