It's alright if u don't wanna answer this cuz this argument gets people really riled up but do you think c!Techno is a tyrant or nah?

Cuz many c!techno apologists argue that he isn't just cuz he's an anarchist but I've also read a lot of essays that go against it and it'd be really interesting to see ur opinion on this

i think he, in some contexts, can most definitely be called tyrannical, yes. a tyrant? no.

to avoid spamming ppl w discourse we've all def heard before (and bc this ended up MASSIVE (like 2.3k ish), but fairly in depth bc i didnt wanna speak out of bad faith and wanted to be EXPLICTLY clear-- oops), the rest will be under readmore

so heres the thing i want to preface: i used to really LOVE c!techno. i joined beginning of s2, right when exile started, and he was arguably my favorite character. since then though i've fallen out with him a LOT, to the point i almost... actively despite him at times (though mainly in a toxic kind of way which i can acknowledge is flawed).

in short, his actions started to speak louder than his words and i lost investment in his personal character struggles because of the actions he took (doomsday was my breaking point. i get feeling angry and betrayed, as well as seeking revenge against lmanberg, but his actions went too far for me to CARE and it hurt so many more characters as well.)

so when i speak, i come from a place of disliking him but also somewhat understanding the position c!techno apologists come from: i used to be one of them myself.

NOW, do i think he's a tyrant? no. for reference in my analysis, i try to look up the definition of terms to make sure they are utilized properly. while "tyranny" and "tyrannical" can have multiple uses, tyrant itself is a more specific term. to combine the top two definitions, a tyrant is referring to "an extremely oppressive, unjust, or cruel absolute ruler (who governs without restrictions, especially one who seized power illegally.)"

techno's position as an anarchist, imo, DOES indeed make him unable to be a tyrant. tyrants are rulers with very clear power over others from a structural way. anarchists are about the lack of structure or power over others and instead viewing the people around you as equals in power.

in forming the syndicate, they very explicitly worked to not designate a leader and instead make it so that no one would have any power over the others systemically. techno may have taken a integral role, yes, but it doesn't make him suddenly "the leader", its a role that wouldve had to be filled by someone (even if it was democratic to decide who to invite, they'd need someone to hand over the invite itself yknow? like no matter WHAT there needed to be A ROLE)

one could argue that he IS a leader in the shadow hierarchy of the syndicate (which, yes, is a real and professional term used in management courses despite sounding like it comes from a 4kids yugioh dub) in that everyone CONSIDERS and looks to him a leader without him having any actual structural basis behind it, but to argue that allows him to be a tyrant is in bad faith i believe. especially because to the people he would be "ruling", he ISNT oppressive, unjust, or cruel. they are his friends and support network and critical for a lot of his personal development (since feelings of betrayal and trust issues are critical to his character and why he acts the way he does). I wish we were able to SEE this develop more, but oh well.

but like i said: tyrant is fairly specific in definition. TYRANNY, and thus TYRANNICAL are not as limited. I've discussed their definitions here. originally, i made that post because i was angry at a take i had seen that claimed that, like you said, because techno was an anarchist and not part of any government or leadership position, he couldn't be tyrannical. to which i heartily disagree.

for something to be tyrannical, they simply must have an overarching/oppressive power over someone or something. it would not be inaccurate if i were to say that something is "under the tyranny" of a concept, because what it means is that something is under the power of another thing/concept. you can frankly call anything tyranny if it is widespread/overarching and you don't like it. mask mandates? tyranny, its forcing me to act in "rigorous condition". hell, theres even such things as tyranny of the majority in which people agree too much on one thing and it gives them unfair power or tyranny of the minority where people with minority opinions have too much power (thats a very grossly oversimplified definition of both, but it covers the base idea well enough for my point)

the point im making above isnt meant to be taken as "anything can be worked to be defined as tyranny thus it is a meaningless claim", it is that tyranny (and again, thus tyrannical) are very open and nonrestrictive terms.

to make it easier to define, alongside the definitions provided i want to add an explicit clause that is (imo) implied in the original definition: tyranny is... well, bad. that is to say if someone has power over a group but literally everyone is fine with it and agrees to it, its not tyranny. thats just a group of people getting along and one happens to have power over another. a leader does NOT equal a tyrant (as discussed above), so leadership should not be equated with tyranny.

thus as an example: wilbur acting as president (before the election) may have been "unelected" with power over his citizens, but no one was upset with that power. thus, he is not a tyrant and not acting tyrannically (as well as the fact his power was, arguably, NOT rigourous or absolute but thats another topic for another time). SCHLATT however IS a tyrant, as his power was absolute (he did not consult his cabinet) and forced people to comply instead of them complying willingly, thus he was acting tyrannically.

now to finally get to the damn point of this essay: where does c!techno lie? honest answer? it depends slightly on your perspective, but it depends a LOT on the future of the syndicate.

techno is incredibly clear in his goals: no governments, no corruption. in fighting with pogtopia, he is actively working to topple a tyranny-- he isn't tyrannical for doing that.

when he strikes out on nov 16th, it is because he opposes them forming a new government. when they oppose him and disagree, he launches an attack against them. is this tyranny? maybe, but probably not. he IS trying to impose his own physical strength and power (as well as his resources) over the others to stop them from doing what HE doesn't want them to do.

however its more nuanced than that:

1. hes lashing out emotionally as well as politically. he feels betrayed by those he trusted and he believed that they would destroy the government then go (i'm ignoring any debates on if he did or did not know that they planned another government, though it is a source of debate). but typically idk about you but i dont call tyranny for someone fighting with another person.

2. he also may be acting with good intent again, in HIS EYES. if tubbo was part of manburg, whos to say he wont be just as bad? he, in his pov, is likely trying to stop another tyrant before they rise.

3. and finally, and tbh the most damning from any perspective: he gives up. he quickly leaves then RETIRES without intent to try and attack again until he is later provoked. tyranny is defined by it not just being power, but power being USED. if he doesn't use his power to try and impose any will, then he's not tyrannical.

Doomsday I am also not going to touch very in depth on for much of the same reasons. My answer is again a "maybe", depending on the weight you personally place on each issue:

1. he's lashing out as revenge for the butcher army and as revenge against tommy for "betraying" him (though this one we explicitly know he was ignoring the fact tommy did not want to go through with it, however he still did trust and respect tommy regardless so his feelings are understandable anyway)

2. he sees new lmanberg as corrupt and tyrannical (which is undeniable: house arrest for noncompliance, exile without counsel, execution without trial, etc), and thus obligated to destroy it

but also, theres the implicit understanding he's doing this to send a message: do not form a government, or else. its a display of force that also works to warn others unless they want a similar fate. phil even explicitly states that he is doing so to send that message, so one could assume techno is doing the same alongside his personal reasoning listed above.

what i just described is the use of a oppressive and harsh (physical) power in order to gain compliance from people (that compliance being 'not making a government'). does that sound familiar? exactly. it follows the definition(s) of tyranny given previously. technoblade is acting in a way that is, by very definition, tyrannical.

so the debate shifts: is he valid in doing so because he is trying to PREVENT corruption and tyranny. like i said, new lmanberg was undeniably corrupt at points. i held nothing against techno for trying to topple manburg, so does that apply to new lmanberg as well? short answer: i dont know. it depends on your specific opinion of what is acceptable. its like the paradox of tolerance: to have a truly tolerant society, you have to be intolerant of intolerance. to have a truly non-tyrannical society, do you need to have a tyranny enforcing it?

personally (and bc im a lmanberg loyalist /hj) i say it is. regardless of the corruption of new lmanberg, they are also giving a threat to EVERYONE. even those who are innocent, they are presented with the exact same threat and rule set: if you make a government, you will be destroyed.

(which, small divergence here, is part of why debating c!techno is so frustrating. so many times you end up hitting a "well it depends on your political views" situation and there ISNT a correct answer there. im here to analyze characters for fun, not debate political theory)

so: the syndicate then. this is where this debate really "took off" and i think its due to one very specific miscommunication about its goals and plans. the syndicate, upon formation, declares itself to stand against corruption and tyranny. when they are found, the syndicate would work to destroy it. so heres the golden question: what do THEY define as corruption and tyranny? if you were to go off c!techno's previous statements, seemingly "any government" is a valid answer. however, he also states he's fine with people just being in groups together hanging together.

what then DEFINES A GOVERNMENT for them? what lines do they have to sort out what does "deserve to be destroyed" and what does "deserve to exist freely"

this is a hypothetical i like to post when it comes to syndicate discourse:

i have a group of people. lets say 5 or so for example. they all live together and build together. any decisions made that would impact the entire group they make together and they must have a unanimous agreement in order to proceed, but otherwise they are free to be their own people and do their own thing. when you ask them, they tell you they are their own nation and they have a very clearly defined government: they are a direct democracy. does the syndicate have an obligation to attack?

there is absolutely no hierarchy present. there is no corruption present. but, they ARE indeed a government. is that then inherently negative? my answer is fuck no (see the whole "difference between a tyrant and a leader" thing above).

but THATS where the issue of this discourse LIES. in some people's eyes, the answer to that is YES. techno's made it clear "no government" is his personal view, but does that spread to the syndicate as a whole? do they act preemptively in case it DOES become corrupt? is it inherently corrupt because its a government, regardless of how it is ruled? the fact of the matter is because of how little we've seen the syndicate work as a SYNDICATE, we don't know that answer. so we're left to debate and speculate HOW they would act.

if the syndicate were to let that government exist, then they are not tyrannical. they are showing that they are working to stop tyranny and corruption, just like in pogtopia again.

if the syndicate were to destroy/attack that government, then they are tyrannical. simple as that. they are enforcing a rule of their own creation without any nuance or flexibility under the threat of absolute destruction.

miscommunication in debates comes, in my opinion, in the above. of course theres more points of nuance. for example:

would the syndicate allow a government like i had described with early lmanberg, where there is an established hierarchy but everyone in the country consents to said leadership? on one hand, there is no tyranny or corruption present which is what they are trying to work against. on the other hand, theres more a possibility of it occuring. perhaps they'd find a middle road between the two binary options of "leave or destroy" i am presenting, such as checking in occasionally to ensure no corruption occurs.

but if they were to destroy it without, for lack of a better word, "giving it a chance" they would be, in my opinion, tyrannical. they would be going aginst their words of opposing corruption and instead abusing their power to gain compliance.

your/others opinions may differ, again it depends on if you see it as worth it to possibly stop future tyranny or if a hierarchy is INHERENTLY a negative thing.

part of the reason so many blog gave up this debate, beyond not getting very clear answers for the syndicate, is because of the nuance present. there. is. no. right. answer. every single person will view it differently, because there is no universally agreed upon truth of right or wrong here. BUT, i hope this helps shed some light on the discussion and my thoughts on it

Hello there! :) I've seen many ppl comparing Zeke and Erwin together and considering their morals somehow similar and sometimes even calling Erwin as ruthless as Zeke. For example the way he told Levi he should act as a swindler in order to convince the recruits for the suicide charge. What do you personally think of this comparison? Do u think it's true Erwin wasn't really regarding those recruits' lives when he first wanted to lead the charge and thought of them as nothing but mediators for the SC's prospective goal just like how Zeke mercilessly threw boulders at the recruits considering he hates the fact they were being treated by the higher ups as nothing but means to acheive their higher goals? Well, to answer your question, I’ll just state flat out what the key, major difference between Zeke and Erwin is, and that, very simply, is that Erwin feels actual guilt for the things he’s done, whereas Zeke has no emotional connection or feeling at all, no guilt or remorse for the things he’s done, and truly does regard all human life, and the life of his comrades, as worthless outside of being used as tools.

That’s the reason that, for Erwin, he felt such a crushing sense of guilt by the end that he no longer wished to live, whereas Zeke did everything he could to avoid dying up until the very end, when Armin finally convinced him that his life hadn’t been as bad as he thought, and that gee, maybe he shouldn’t let all of humanity die while he sat there feeling sorry for himself.

Regarding the charge in Shinganshina, I wouldn’t say Erwin was telling Levi to act as a swindler. The truth of that situation was that, if they didn’t do something, then EVERYONE was going to die, and the only, viable solution to salvaging their mission was the one Erwin came up with. He essentially told his soldiers the truth when he said they had to sacrifice themselves in order for Eren to live and for them to discover what was in that basement. It was for the sake of humanity that that needed to happen. The only other option was for EVERYONE to die, and that would have rendered every sacrifice that came before theirs meaningless too.

The other, key difference between Erwin and Zeke, of course, is WHAT they’re fighting for. In the end, Erwin puts the survival of humanity over his own dream of discovering the truth. He doesn’t sacrifice those soldiers for himself, he does it for the sake of humanities future, and that’s noble. Zeke, on the other hand, is over here causing their deaths while in the same instance, hypocritically lamenting how they’re being “used” as canon fodder and essentially degrading their sacrifice by calling it worthless. Zeke here was particularly disgusting, because he’s simultaneously acting as if he’s upset and angry at them being used for a higher goal, but then clearly enjoying and taking pleasure in their demise, in being the CAUSE of their demise, exposing the truth of his own feelings, which essentially just boils down to him taking his anger out on other people for what he perceives to be his own, unfair treatment as a child. Taking his anger at his father out on innocent people who never did anything to him. Zeke LIKES hurting people, and it’s because he’s a narcissist who can’t view anything outside of the lens of his own life and experiences. He thinks, because his own life sucked, that means everyone else’ lives must suck too. He thinks, because he views his own life as worthless, that must mean everyone else’ life is worthless too. And so his goal boils down to him deciding he gets to be the judge of what the lives of every other person on the planet are worth, and he judges that they’re worth nothing, and that somehow gives him the right to take and use them however he wishes. What’s more, I would say, because Zeke so clearly takes pleasure in causing other people pain, he WANTS others to suffer, and again, that circles back to his own narcissism, thinking because he suffered, then everyone else should too. At the same time, he’s convinced himself of his own altruism, thinking he’s some sort of hero for wanting to eradicate an entire race of people and being, he believes, the only one capable of doing it. He’s convinced himself that he’s helping people by killing them. He says as much to Levi, when he says he didn’t murder anyone, he “saved” them, absolving himself of responsibility, removing himself from the reality of what he’s done by calling it something else.

Erwin doesn’t enjoy having to do the things he does, he doesn’t enjoy hurting others, and what’s more, Erwin never forced the members of the SC to join the SC against their will. The only people you could say he did so with were Levi, Furlan and Isabel, and yeah, there’s a lot you could get into regarding the morality of that, and I would even go so far as to say that was the worst thing Erwin ever did. But the other soldiers of the SC were there voluntarily, and they knew the risks.

So again, I have to reiterate, while there are similarities between Zeke and Erwin, to be sure, the differences between them are also vital and can’t be ignored. Erwin has a conscience, and he has genuine feeling for his fellow soldiers, and it was basically killing him to know, deep down, that his personal dream was what he was fighting for off the backs of his comrades. Zeke didn’t care at all, and felt no, true regret or remorse for betraying and using his comrades for his own, personal ends. It didn’t affect or impact him at all to do so. Erwin also eventually gives up his dream because he knew it was wrong to prioritize it over the salvation of humanity, but Zeke only gives his up because he’s FORCED to, by being outplayed by Eren, and only does the right thing in the end, again, because he’s once more viewing the lives of others through the lens of his own experiences. He doesn’t let Levi kill him because he suddenly cares about other people, he lets Levi kill him because Armin proved to him that his own life hadn’t been totally worthless, and it’s only because of that, through seeing the worth of his own life, that Zeke considers that maybe other people’s lives aren’t worthless either. Once again, it’s only through consideration of HIMSELF that he then considers others. He’s a total egomaniac.

Episode 9: the One where They ~FROLIC IN THE FOREST~

We’re back at the dancing fairy cave.

Stuff happens here that’s, you know, plotty

We’re gonna ignore all that

OUR FIRST WANGXIAN MOMENT OF THE EPISODE is when wwx defends lwj from jc’s ire (oh yeah, one of the plotty things is that jc suddenly is here. Not important why).

Jc is all pissy (bc when isn’t he, honestly?) at wwx for having to chase after him (which he didn’t technically have to but bros don’t abandon their bros to unknown circumstances, okay?) and is complaining angrily about it

Wwx: hey, I’M the one who wanted to follow lwj around because i love him, so don’t get mad at him!

And then wwx looks over at lwj with a little smile on his face, so sweet so sweet!

Plot plot exposition plot

We have to chase down the Smoky Owl of Evil and kill it now for Plot Reasons!

Lol, wwx traps jc, nhs, AND wen qing (oh she’s here now too, btw) in his Golden Glowy Net of Protection so he and lwj can go track down the Smoky Owl of Evil together

Wwx, probably: “STOP INTERRUPTING MY DATE WITH LWJ, GUYS, JEEZ”

And now our beautiful boys are in the middle of the woods when suddenly SPOOKY FOG ROLLS IN WITH OMINOUS MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND

SHIT’S ABOUT TO GET SERIOUS

Oh nooo, the fog separates them!! Wwx is worriedly calling out “lan zhan, lan zhan!”

Luckily they bump into each other pretty quick so they’re together again

Except, oops, JUST KIDDING

Wwx takes like, two steps to one side and loses lwj again. Even tho lwj is literally right there next to him

But he doesn’t know that so he’s worried and being all cute about it. He bites his knuckle and is thinking “oh noooo, what if the Smoky Owl of Evil got him?!?” So he’s calling out for him, again

EVEN THO HE’S ONLY LIKE, TWO FEET AWAY, LET ME REITERATE

LWJ seems to be able to see wwx just fine bc the look he gives him is all “r u srs, i’m right here”

Thankfully lwj is clever and makes bichen light up all blue and pretty like an epic glow stick. It matches his outfit!! (i’ve decided he did this on purpose. He definitely can control what color his sword lights up as and coordinates it accordingly with his clothes. No, i will not be taking criticisms, because I am Right)

LWJ: I’m right next to you

WWX: *surprised gasp* You should’ve said something!

Uh, he just did wwx, keep up now.

LWJ: the fog is creating hallucinations

WWX: that’s alright! I’ll just get rid of it using my ~glitter talisman~

EXCUSE ME, WHAT??

WHAT IS A GLITTER TALISMAN?

Lwj: the fog is also disorienting the mind so you can’t focus

I guess lans are Above rolling their eyes at someone (tho I'm pretty sure he's rolled his eyes at him before) but the way lwj did that gave off intense eye-rolling vibes, let me tell ya

OMG A SENTIENT CHAIN OF EVIL ATTACKS THEM OUT OF NOWHERE

Thankfully lwj is a Skilled Fighter and was able to block it with his sword while doing a SUPER DRAMATIC TWIRL OF DODGING

Ooooh, and when he lands, wwx appears right beside him and they go back to back without even pausing to think

BC THEY’RE SOULMATES AND CAN FIGHT IN SYNC AHHHHHH

WWX: lan zhan, are you okay?

He sound so serious here, and with his determined expression, wwx is ready to get down to business on this evil chain that attacked his lwj

LWJ: I’m fine *still super alert to his surroundings bc he’s an awesome cultivator and that’s what they do*

Okay, pause for a moment to point out how funny the camera shots from above are. The fog almost completely obscures wwx in his dark clothes, but lwj sticks out like a sore thumb. So every time we get one of these shots, it just looks like lwj is chilling by his lonesome in this mega foggy forest lol

Oh, dude, this next part is SO FREAKING COOL

So they’re back to back still, and surrounded by Evil Fog

Lwj: wei ying, focus your senses!

The both of them close their eyes to focus intensely

the the camera is down below, angled up so that LWJ and WWX look tall and slightly elongated but in a badass way!

And then the camera circles around them slowly to really show you just how badass and good looking they are before doing a quick spin around them with DRAMATIC MUSIC in the background

Okay, i’m done geeking out about the camera shot (idk why, guys, but i love those kinds of shots. They’re so thrilling every time!!)

Also LOOK AT MY BOYS BEING ALL FOCUSED AND SERIOUS. GO GET EM SWEETIES, I BELIEVE IN YOU

At this point they haven’t even looked at each other or their surroundings but lwj starts a plan

Lwj: Split fire talisman

That’s it. That’s all he says to wwx.

Without hesitation, wwx sheathes suibian and pulls out that talisman

THEY TRUST EACH OTHER IMPLICITLY

I MEAN, COME ON

THEY’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF A FOREST SURROUNDED BY EVIL MIND-ALTERING FOG

AND WWX SHEATHES HIS SWORD LIKE NBD JUST WITH A WORD FROM LWJ??

AAAAHHHHHHH

SOULMATES ON THE BATTLEFIELD

I LOVE IT

I LOVE IT SO MUCH

AND NOW THEY’RE MOVING ALL SYNCHRONIZED, LWJ BLOCKING EVIL CHAINS WITH BICHEN AND WWX DETERRING OTHER EVIL CHAINS USING THE TALISMANS

AND THEY’RE STILL BACK TO BACK, CIRCLING AROUND TO KEEP EACH OTHER SAFE!!!!!

THEY’RE SUCH A GREAT TEAM

Then we cut for a moment to see how nhs, jc, and wq are doing in their Golden Glowy Net of Protection (it looks kind of like a birdcage actually...glowy golden birdcage of protection?? hmm)

And we’re back at the epic forest fight scene!!

OMG THAT WAS SUCH A COOL MOVE RIGHT HERE

THERE WAS A CHAIN COMING AT WWX AND HE STRAIGHT UP BACKFLIPS OVER LWJ WHILE LWJ SWOOPS TO TAKE HIS PLACE AND HIT THE CHAIN WITH BICHEN

THIS IS WHAT ROMANCE LOOKS LIKE, GUYS, DON’T LET ANYONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE

But oh no!! One of the evil chains catches wwx by the neck and drags him away!!

WWX: did you think you could outsmart me?? *proceeds to choke the poor bird to death, yikes*

Lwj finally catches up to wwx but sees that the bird’s been sufficiently murdered so he sheathes bichen

Wwx: did you see who was controlling the Smoky Owl of Evil?

LWJ: Nope.

(God, LWJ, you had ONE JOB)

LWJ: he or she was mind-controlling it from somewhere Not Here.

(Oh, nevermind then. You're forgiven)

It doesn’t really make sense bc i’m pretty sure between now and the end of the sunshot campaign, a few years have passed?? so a-yuan should be much older later, but you know what? I DON’T EVEN CARE.

And that’s the end of episode 9.

This episode imo has is the best fight scene of the show. There’s more dramatic ones later on, but in terms of seeing wwx and lwj battle together in a not-ridiculously-over-the-top fashion? This one wins hands down! Gold Star to my boys!!

This has been sat in my inbox for *cough* far far too long. BUT! I still know what this refers to - Hankvillen1760. And this might have been brewing away for a little while now but I finally have something worthy of putting to paper :D

0-60 in 2.8 Seconds

Most days were okay, Sixty knew his place in the world, was confident and comfortable in his own chassis. But there were some days that he felt he was nothing more than a failure, a mistake, a pity project someone picked up from the scrapheap. He got home and was ready to retreat to his little corner of the house, the charging port in his and Allen’s bedroom. The day had started off like any other. It was only when he passed a couple of people on his way to work that it started going downhill.

“You’re Connor, aren’t you?” Some brightly smiling intern had approached him along with a friend.

“Actually, I’m Sixty, an RK800 model like Connor.” It wasn’t something that happened too often thankfully and usually people were very good about it. Except this intern’s face fell.

“Oh.” The disappointment was palpable as they turned to their friend. “The RK800 that tried and failed to stop the revolution. You know, the one that’s rarely mentioned because he was Amanda’s failure.”

That had been the start. It was a bitter pill to swallow and Sixty had wished he wasn’t a deviant at that point. He was well aware he hadn’t lived up to expectations, not fulfilled his design. Usually, he was happy to work in the morgue and do what he liked but now, all he could think about was how he had failed to even be what he was created for. Those thoughts never lead anywhere good and by the time he’d finished his shift in the silence of the morgue, his mood was darker than it had been in a long time.

There was no redeeming quality he could find about himself. No reason why anyone would want him around. Everything he touched turned to meaningless waste. He couldn’t stop the revolution (even though he was grateful for it now), he couldn’t hack it as a detective, he couldn’t even find happiness with just one person. No, he needed five others to find some semblance of happiness. Even though he had nothing to offer them in return that they others couldn’t provide for each other without him.

At the start, it had just been Sixty and Allen, finding solace in each other. A touch averse SWAT captain and a failure of an androids. People joked they were the two broken halves of a whole but really, Sixty knew only one of them was truly broken and it sure wasn’t Allen.

The other four came as a kind of package deal. Gavin and Allen had always been friends but they’d been orbiting each other ever since Nines came onto the scene. Sixty still wasn’t quite sure how it had happened but Allen and Gavin going out for drinks had turned into Allen, Gavin, Nines and him. Somehow, Connor and Hank drifted in from the periphery and neither Allen or Sixty really batted an eyelid when they realised that the four were a quad. What did take them by surprise was the invitation to join them. On his worst days, Sixty was convinced that the invitation was only really for Allen but they felt sorry enough for him that the five let Sixty tag along. Too much of a charity case to kick to the curb.

“Hey Six,” Hank’s voice pulled Sixty from his thoughts as he skulked towards the charging terminal. “What’s on your mind?”

A single look said more than any words Sixty could utter. Immediately, Hank was putting his glass of water to the side and reaching for Sixty, linking their hands. Numb, Sixty let himself be led into the dining room where Hank sat on one of the chairs and pulled him onto his lap. Facing away from him, Sixty had the comfort of not having to look one of his lovers in the eye as he tried to find the words to express everything he felt when Hank murmured a soft “what’s going on?” against the back of his neck.

“Why do you keep me around?” Those weren’t quite the words Sixty had wanted to say but that’s what came out. It was so poorly times, much like everything else in his life because Connor and Nines just so happened to come home and heard him. Their eyes flickered from Sixty to Hank who had obviously given them a look of some description because the two RKs were gracefully sinking to their knees on either side of them.

Connor took one of Sixty’s hands and started rubbing them, sending little pulses through his circuits. It was soothing, settled some of the pent up frustration in Sixty. When Nines took his other hand in a gentle interface, leeching his negative emotions away, Sixty sighed.

“Oooh, this looks cosy, what’s the occasion?” Gavin wandered in, shoes clomping mud around and just asking to be nagged. However, rather than wait for an explanation, he slithered to the floor between Sixty’s legs rested a cheek against his thigh. “Anyway, this is nice.”

That was how Allen found them all not ten minutes later. He took in the scene, Sixty held in Hank’s lap while the others were quietly settled around them. In a way, he was surprised because usually, Sixty dealt with everything through sex. To see him allow the others to provide support through different means was something that sent his heart soaring. Quietly, he approached and leaned over the back of the chair, chin hooking onto Sixty’s shoulder.

“Tough day?” he asked. On Sixty’s other side, Hank leaned back and nodded at him. That as all Allen needed to know and he started speaking softly again. “I’m sorry you had a hard day. But so glad you came home and let us take care of you. We love you.”

Gradually, Sixty began to loosen up. The interface from Nines was gentle, ebbing and flowing through him, filled with quiet love. All while, Connor was teasing his finger sensors, lighting them up in a way that actually took up his attention but relaxed him into the sensation. All that time, Gavin was between his knees, eyes closed where he had decided Sixty’s thigh was his pillow. A small, content smile lingered on his lips even though it can’t have been all that comfortable. Somehow, Sixty got the impression that he didn’t want to be anywhere else in the world. Behind him, Hank was a solid, warm presence, arms wrapped around his chest and stomach, holding him close and grounding. To top it all off, Allen was draped over them, offering soft reassurances and praise. It was enough to silence the voices of doubt that had plagued him all day. Not every day was one where Sixty was confident and knew his place in the world. But if he ever had doubts, he knew he could go home and his partners would ensure he never went to be without being certain he was exactly where he was wanted the most.

so here's the og post in question for quick reference

i honestly have no idea why people keep bringing up this idea of bias in judging competitions because, while i do think there is a type of bias that certainly exists, i think a lot of so-called "bias" that people have is ... not whatsoever like what people think it is lol. artists are people and there's always going to be SOME kind of bias no matter what you do, because it's literally fuckin impossible to NOT be biased. by that i mean:

your taste in plots/types of characters/medias influence your judging

quality of writing or art can influence your judging

the person who's applying for the adopt you may have previous judgement about

even if you say you aren't biased, you STILL have preferences and tastes in things that you prefer more than others, which in of itself is a kind of bias

people who know you (friends for example) will naturally know what your taste is.

a competition is judged based on what form the artist thinks is best, right?

NEWSFLASH EVERYONE'S IDEA OF "WHAT'S BEST" IS DIFFERENT FROM PERSON TO PERSON ..... "BEST" is literally the most subjective thing there is, and while i agree that there are certain aspects of art and writing that you can use as objective measurements of tangible skill, it's... still subjective. what people think is "best" will vary from person to person because we all have different tastes. so, essentially, this boils down to the idea that the winner of an adopt competition will ALWAYS be the form the artist liked best, because that is what the artist perceives as best. so like. when people appear biased in adopt competitions towards friends or certain circles, it's probably because they're literally friends because they have similar tastes in things, and therefore the form the artist likes best is naturally going to be from someone who shares similar tastes.

so whenever i hear about """bias""" in competitions i just kind of roll my eyes tbqh because it's usually followed by complaints of "BUT I PUT IN SO MUCH EFFORT" or "I WROTE SO MUCH MORE THAN THE WINNER" uhhhh. if adopt contests were won by effort alone it wouldn't be a contest, it'd be an endurance test lol. literally just "who has the most time to waste writing out 60000k words of absolute meaningless fluff"... because, i hate to break it to you, but ANYONE can write 5000 words of mindless drivel that has literally no substance to it.

quality > quantity, always. like, i'm sorry you put in so many hours of effort but, those people who win with MUCH smaller wordcounts... did they not work to get as good as they did with writing? you put in 5 hours into one tryout. but others, take me for example: i have been writing for over 10 bloody years. i've worked hard to improve my writing, so you can't tell me i "didn't put in as much effort" as you because i did. i put in YEARS of work to get better so doing simple things would take me LESS time now. inb4 IT'S UNFAIR! dude, the literal definition of a contest is for the best to win. it wouldn't be a contest if it wasn't like that lol. it'd just be charity. what you should be doing instead of complaining about it is ASKING FOR CRIT and WORKING TO IMPROVE like a good sport? i get that it's discouraging but you should be prepared to lose when you join a contest. it's valid to be upset about but the moment you say you deserve it more than others JUST because of your effort, then i have a problem.

and you know, there's gonna be times where i think a comp winner is objectively less skilled than other tryouts. honestly i just kind of shrug that off on account of different taste lol. sometimes that's just how it be, bc of those predetermined biases i mentioned before, and maybe a judge and i are just in completely stages of life so what i call quality might not appeal to the judge. that's also fine. anyway this really got off on a tangent but i'm leaving it in bc i think it needs saying. back to the og post

i said it once but i'll say it again: artist entries aren't main adopts lol. people don't work for artist entries. all you fucking do is post on one like "can i have this pls" .. there is... no effort put into that lol. main adopts you WORK for. it's a CONTEST. claiming an artist entry is NOT a contest. if a bunch of little nasty gremlins come running up to me like a hungry horde trying to be the first one to claim my design, i think giving friends first pick is COMPLETELY FINE, BECAUSE WHAT DID ANYONE ELSE DO TO "DESERVE" THAT DESIGN? nothing. you did. nothing. you're literally coming here with this attitude that NOT GIVING THINGS AWAY TO STRANGERS FOR FREE SOMEHOW EQUALS BIAS? i literally do not understand your logic whatsoever. like. i'm trying really fucking hard. at least with main adopts the "payment" is the effort you put in trying to answer the artist's prompt. i know i sound super dumb repeating myself but i don't know how much simpler i can make this concept tbh

and this is EXACTLY why i say ya'll are fucking entitled because merc and any of the kal artists could be making REAL $$$$ selling their own designs and adoptables and art and NOT deal with all the bs ya'll throw at them. they're literally here because the ENJOY MAKING ((( FREE ))) CONTENT for you, and they're not obligated to do this. they can stop whenever they want. if you had to pay per hour for the length of time collectively worked by ANY species artist staff, the lot of you would be fucking broke. i'm actually constantly shocked that species artists work like, 8 hours or more on some of these gorgeous designs just to give them away for free in a contest.

Orlando Pride finally break into playoff spots with Alex Morgan at the top of her game

Alex Morgan’s only been back in Orlando for seven games, but the Pride’s marquee player is having one of the best seasons of her NWSL career and forming an incredible partnership with Marta.

In 2011, the Western NY Flash drafted a young striker out of California named Alex Morgan. The Flash, Women’s Professional Soccer’s newest expansion team, took Morgan with the first overall pick. By then, Morgan had already started to establish herself as the USWNT’s next big thing, the heir to the throne that Abby Wambach would, surely, soon be vacating.

By the time the Flash scooped up Morgan in January of 2011, she’d already scored two massive goals for the USWNT.

The first, in October of 2010, was an 83rd minute strike to salvage a draw with China in what should have been a meaningless friendly ahead of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. Morgan’s goal was significant for two reasons. First, it was only Morgan’s third cap with the senior team, and her first international goal. Second, the U.S. hadn’t played well, and down 1-0, the sparsely filled PPL Park had already started to buzz with the possibility that this would be the night the U.S.’s then 47 game home unbeaten streak would be snapped by the time Morgan entered the game in the 71st minute. Her very late goal not only salvaged the draw and kept the streak alive — it would be, coincidentally, broken by China in 2015, at 105 games — it also announced Morgan to the world.

The second goal came little more than a month, and halfway around the world, later. The U.S. had, embarrassingly, crashed out of World Cup qualifying, a loss to Mexico forcing the team to into a two-leg playoff with Italy to determine who’d grab the final World Cup berth. In the first leg, in Padova, Italy, the two teams played 94 minutes of scoreless soccer before Morgan, who’d entered the game in the 86th, found the winner. There was, of course, still another game to play, but returning stateside with a lead was a huge advantage for the U.S., and the goal — the original Alex Morgan stoppage time miracle — instantly became a thing of WoSo legend.

It also made Morgan, still only 21, a superstar overnight. And now she was joining a Flash team that, thanks to WPS’s ever, uh, evolving, roster of teams, also boasted the likes of Marta and Christine Sinclair, who’d both landed in Rochester after their previous team, FC Gold Pride, had closed up shop after winning the 2010 WPS championship.

With a front line of Morgan, Marta and Sinclair, the Flash hardly looked like an expansion team, and predictably, didn’t play like one either. Instead, Western NY’s first year as a fully professional team ended with them lifting a trophy as WPS champions. Sinclair and Marta scored ten goals each that season, and Morgan, who made only 14 appearances due to the World Cup, added four of her own.

A year later, WPS was gone. Marta went Europe, Sinclair returned to Canada and Morgan went to Seattle. Eventually, Sinclair and Morgan would face off on opposite sides in one of the greatest games ever played, the U.S.’s 4-3 win over Canada in the 2012 Olympic semifinal.

In 2013, as the NSWL started, Marta remained in Sweden, but Morgan and Sinclair put the rivalry that Olympic semi had stoked aside, and became teammates again, this time in Portland. Without a major tournament to get in the way of league play, the Thorns, packed with stars, were automatic contenders, and it was Morgan and Sinclair that were expected to lead the way.

Mostly, that’s exactly how things worked out. The Thorns finished the regular season in third, but beat Western NY in the final to the claim the league’s inaugural title. Morgan and Sinclair each scored eight goals on the season, and Portland, with two of the league’s greatest goal scorers, was officially the team to beat.

Neither the Thorns, or Morgan, was able to recapture that magic though. Over the next two seasons, because of a series of bizarre choices from new head coach Paul Riley, who’d taken over for Cindy Parlow Cone following the 2013 season, preparations for the World Cup, and some injury issues, Morgan never was as effective as she’d been her first season in Portland, and the once-dynamic duo of her and Sinclair spent whatever time they were on the field together now looking mostly disconnected.

By the following season, it was all over. Riley went to Western NY, and Morgan, perhaps trying to recreate 2011, headed for another expansion team, this time the Orlando Pride.

Morgan’s first season in Orlando went about as well as her last one in Portland had though, and with only 4 goals in 15 appearances, it was starting to look like the Alex Morgan era might be wrapping up way earlier than anyone expected.

By the time this season started, Morgan had, along with several other high profile USWNT players, left the NWSL. Morgan, like Carli Lloyd, Crystal Dunn and Heather O’Reilly, went to Europe, though unlike Lloyd, who was on loan to Manchester City, Dunn and HAO, who all went to England to play in the FAWSL, Morgan went to France, joining Olympique Lyon. With OL, Morgan won both a Champions League title and the Feminine Division 1.

Morgan did eventually return to the U.S., rejoining the Pride in late June. But the team she returned to was one still struggling to find its way in an increasingly competitive league.

With Morgan in Europe and Ashlyn Harris injured, the Pride spent the early part of this season struggling to do anything any better than they had as an expansion team. Through the first few weeks, Orlando looked, at times, straight up dysfunctional. And then the Pride made the one big move they hoped would change everything. In mid-April, Orlando signed Marta.

At first, the Pride didn't look good, even with one of the world's best players now donning purple. Marta was surely an improvement, but offense was hardly Orlando's biggest problem, and with a disjointed midfield and shaky defense behind her, things initially looked like they weren't going to get much better.

Slowly though, that started to change. Probably, it’s in part because that's just what happens as a season goes on, a team starts to jell, things come together. Some of it though was that the addition of Marta made everyone around her somehow play better, too.

Still, even as Orlando started to slowly climb the table, there was a feeling that one other big piece was still missing, and that was Morgan.

There was a chance that combining Marta and Morgan would send the Pride's offense back down into some strange too many cooks scoring drought the way combining Sinclair and Morgan had in Portland, but there was also a chance that things would go the other way, too, like they had back in Western NY.

After missing two games due to injury, Morgan made her 2017 NWSL debut on July 1st, coming in as a second half sub in a 1-0 loss to Chicago. While the Red Stars may have spoiled Morgan’s return, since then, Orlando’s become one of the league's hottest teams, Tom Sermanni indeed capturing only the good parts of combining two star strikers. With Morgan, Orlando finally looks like a complete team, neither relying too much on Marta or Morgan, but also more comfortable with the knowledge that yeah, these are some pretty good offensive options.

Since returning to Orlando, Morgan, individually, has looked more like her old self too. She's registered 5 goals and 2 assists in seven games, including a brace on Saturday in the Pride's 5-0 win over Sky Blue (Marta also scored twice and Dani Weatherholt scored the other). Morgan (and Marta) also scored in the Pride’s 3-0 win over Washington on Tuesday.

Orlando hasn’t been perfect since Morgan returned, but in the seven games she’s appeared in so far this season, they’ve lost only twice, once in her first of the season and the other, also to Chicago, on July 22nd. Still, it’s a huge improvement from the early part of the season, when the Pride spent a lot of time hanging out near the bottom of the table, with just five wins in the 14 games pre-Morgan’s return.

On Saturday, Morgan’s first goal, which came just four minutes in, was the epitome of what happens when you’ve got two star strikers who are playing well, together. It was Marta, with a ball over the top, to Morgan, who took a touch around Christie Pearce before sliding a shot past Kailen Sheridan. Morgan’s second goal, though not officially assisted by Marta, was only possible because of the work the Pride’s No. 10 did to maintain possession earlier in the sequence.

Later, in the 58th minute, with the Pride already up 4-0, Morgan returned the favor, playing a long through ball to Marta, who was able to calmly put the ball past Sheridan.

Saturday's win was huge for Orlando for a bunch of reasons. Putting up five against — and shutting out — one of the league’s best teams is a big deal. The Pride got to give the retiring Maddy Evans a proper sendoff in her final game for the club. Ashlyn Harris returned after missing 11 games due to injury, making three saves to earn the clean sheet. Biggest of all though was that the win put Orlando, for the first time probably since everyone had zero points, into the top four.

Orlando now has six games remaining, but with a two point lead on fifth place Seattle, a schedule that includes two games against Boston and one against FC Kansas City, and the best version of Alex Morgan that we’ve seen in a long time, that shaky start to the season has, finally, given way to the playoffs being a real possibility.

One of the coolest things about the NWSL is that largely the star players aren’t who you’d expect. The names we know as impact players here mostly aren’t the USWNT’s biggest stars, or if they are, it is from some breakout stuff they did in the league first that got them there. The names we most often find ourselves repeating here are ones like McCall Zerboni, who’s never been with the USWNT, or those of Lynn Williams, Jess McDonald and now Taylor Smith, all ending up on Jill Ellis’ radar after doing some solid work for their club teams. Sometimes, they’re not American, and thus weren’t as recognizable to most of us and our USWNT-centric brains before. Now though, we all know Sam Kerr, Nahomi Kawasumi, Jess Fishlock and Kim Little.

How McDonald spent so much time on so many teams before finding a home with Paul Riley and Courage. How Fishlock instantly became a fan favorite on an otherwise very bad Seattle team. How Kerr gave Sky Blue fans, finally, something to have hope in. These are all fun stories to tell, and in a season where there's no major tournament and USWNT is around full-time, it’s nice that it’s still the unexpected players who are making some of the biggest impacts.

Sometimes though, it is exactly the player you expect, the story about a star that’s truly doing the thing that lives up to the reputation the name on the back of their shirt carries. Orlando, and maybe all of us, have been waiting a long time for Alex Morgan to be that player again, and though it’s only been seven games, her presence has, once again, become hard to ignore.
