adventure time wizard city liveblog
 well here we go
my last adventure time liveblog, i havent actually done one of these in MANY years... probably not since 2014
this takes place at the same time as obsidian?
DID-- DID CHOOSE GOOSE JUST DIE
DID BUFO JUST KILL CHOOSE GOOSE
yeah i know thatâs bufo, they only made it enormously obvious, tsk tsk
@spaceacepearlâ joked about us seeing choose goose get sent to hell but i diDNT EXPECT IT TO HAPPEN
This music is i assume by one of the many musical artists Adam Muto listed on twitter, it rocks. Itâs not as hardcore as Obsidianâs intro, but itâs suitably chill for the scene.Â
âget offa my bus kidâ
Those wizards in the left and far right groups appear to be new!Â
OH MY GOD--
HELP?????? NEW PROFILE PIC TIME
HAHAHAHAH
THE MUSICAL CON DID ME GOOD, I DID REALLY LOUD AUDIBLE LAUGHTER
i bet hanna and co had fun making these signs
my favourite is the cat with âFAMILIARS HAVE RIGHTSâ
cadorka..... wow
Weâre not even four minutes into the ep and peppermint butler has already killed someone in front of a large group of witnesses
âthis smells of DARK MAGICâ âyall kids know thats illegal rightâ peps watches the other kids nod before later joining in, LOL
i cant believe pep started the great gum wars and got killed by golb
SOMEONE has been playing Overwatch...Â
i-- i still cant believe choose goose is fucking dead
how long was he stuck in hell for, or was that recent to together again after new death showed upÂ
i have to admit im not a big fan of spader, too perfect, and not in that funny way either. i hope they give him some characteristics that make him stand out.Â
im getting flashbacks to OK KO and Owl House here...
Cadebra using music is a reference to Abracadanielâs love of interpretetive dance in Play Date.Â
âthey only laugh because youre differentâ âi knowâ âSO STOP BEING DIFFERENTâ oh my god itâs like talking to my own parents cadebra is actually... a LOT like me, less in her hyperactivity but more in her nonchalant enthusiasm and almost acceptance of the inevitable bullying because it means more time in peopleâs consciousness
ahhh - itâs quietly revealed here that she is responsible and a skilled magician, she is just bored of magic! i like that she parents abracadaniel instead of being downtrodden by his ramblings.Â
PEP NO--- oh i see the problem, he hasnât got his Bug Milk... sorry Martin Olsen fans, no Hunson today. At least we get one more Phil Face for the road!Â
candy people in their natural habitat
Ahhh thatâs Doctor Calidoneus! The voice actor was at the recent Distant Lands panel alongside Pep and Blaineâs actors.Â
âpretty sure hes just trashcandyâ - i like you, sassy antler lady
the mystery of how he gets clothes
and once again spader is proving to be the most irritating distant lands character of the lot, there is no subversion here. where is the subversion? Â
NANI
what is going on here? are pep and peppermint the same person or not? im sure they must be, but there is something going on here with peppermint butlerâs soul being trapped in the body of his child self who hasnât got the same memories.Â
OH, HYNDEN WALCH DID A NEW LINE yes this is what im here for, special overÂ
peppermint butler cursed himself... of course he did - Shado was correct!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WHAT THE FUCK
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
ROCK STUDENT, BLESSED ROCK STUDENT, WAS THAT POOR GUY WHO LOOKS LIKE A JAWBREAKER
love the reference to astral plane, of course pep cant astrally project because cursed pep is still inside of himÂ
wow, blaine, wow
they have a crush
LITTLE DUDE! COLE SANCHEZ!
i love the dynamic between cadebra and abracadaniel, imo so far itâs the heart of the special. im not really gripped by peppermint butlerâs school troubles. i imagine someone else probably will be but i want to run past that shit as far as possible.Â
TRDGFYGHJH
WE
WE MADEÂ A PREDICTION THAT WAS JUST LIKE THIS
PEPPERMINT BUTLER GETTING TURNED INTO THE FOUR COMPONENTS OF PEPPER MINT BUTT LURE WAS IN THE WIZARD CITY PREDICTIONS ART DRAW THAT HASNT BEEN POSTED YET
ILL SHOW YOU WHEN NICK POSTS THE VIDEO and then ill tell you who made the prediction because i... think it was nick himself, insanityÂ
who plagiarized finnâs signature???
turns out pep really DID take over wizard city!!!!
i love this band
i understand your pain peps
you probably have a bit too much in common with your mother, and i imagine it isnât easy being turned into a kid and not being able to do stuff that came so easy. youâre disappointing yourself! (heâs literally disappointing himself)
Iâm less than halfway through the special, what the fuck. I wasnât wrong when I said Wizard City had a lot on its plate. Itâs noit that Iâve been particularly gripped up to this point, though to be fair I didnât pause at all during the other specials barring Obsidian.Â
that... that poor kid is still a rock
and then the preview happened and bufo casually revealed to the audience that, yes, he killed choose goose
i dont know whats happening with pep but it seems he needs to be exorcised of... pep. which is a shame. i hope they learn to coexist.Â
i have to say the background work in this special is really good! like, really damn good.Â
WH
WHAT
DID SPADER JUST DIE
IS THIS WHY PEOPLE THINK PEPBUT KILLED HIMÂ
oh thats right - abracadaniel is cadebraâs uncle! this must be abracadniels sister. sorry, folks, he doesnât fuck.Â
Where are they? Is this anywhere near Wizard City? Itâs an unpopulated prewar wasteland.Â
THESE ARE JUST HUMANS
OF COURSE SHE WANTS TO PERFORM TO MILQUETOAST HUMANS
my child
is this an art style choice or did they get the people from that one studio to make this
HANNA FINALLY GETS TO FULFIL HER DREAM OF INSERTING KANEDA INTO ADVENTURE TIME
the red jacket he wears and his head pill shape is a big kaneda reference actually, which i suppose makes sense considering heâs a rival to our protagonist, but itâs a bit on the nose
bufo killed one of his own students? but why????
âMY UNCLEâS A COPâ
âno one likes a ratâ
i actually really like blaine, though im confused. did their VA change halfway through the special?
HOW NATURAL, NO WASTE, IT IS AN ENDLESS CHAIN
did doctor caledonius steal the trophy,,,?Â
EVIL SNAIL EVIL SNAIL
MONMSTER HUNJTER DISCOVERY NOISE, this time itâs a tetsucabra
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I HAVE QUESTIONS
god i wish this is what this special was about, i miss adventure time
these remind me of the comics with their art style :) i wonder who designed them? the one on the right with pb and pep, in particular, very comics-y.Â
fdgfhgf because heâs like 500
âpep can be kind of a jerk but he wouldnât kill anyoneâ
sorry, cadebra, i have news for you
is doctor calednoius the true villain? if bufoâs out of the picture, she MUST be,Â
ANTS
oh no, he might gbe stuck in wizard city :(Â
HELP
the writing on the wall...
SPADER LITERALLY FUCKING DIED OH YM JESUS CHRIST
PEPPERMINT BUTLERâS OWN CULT????
THIS IS JUST OK KO NOW
okay im not surprised all the teachers at wizard city are cultists in worship of peps, maybe they killed spader and bufo because they bullied peps T_T
wait no, they thought spader had the potential, but sadly not
HE FUCKING KILLED HIMSELF
sorry, i was distracted by the pretty dope fight sequence and now the special is over????
fucking jesse, hes probably at least partly responsible for the cult nonsense
This credits art is by Maya Petersen!!!! Holy shit itâs adorable!
LRETGFDRGTFGMHGFHFG
LEAF MAN
DO YOU THINK THEY PUT HIM IN RETROSPECTIVELY
DO YOU THINK MAYA PETERSEN DREW THIS AND ADAM PUT IT IN THE EP RETROSPECTIVELY
HE LIVES
MAYBE THIS IS WHY CHOOSE GOOSE WENT TO HELL
okay, itâs over :)Â
first thoughts out of the way: not a big fan of this special. itâs like watching a completely different show. itâs not got the PZSHAHH of the normal wizard city stuff and there werenât a lot of funny jokes or even hearty moments in the thing.Â
it suffers from a lack of invested character interactions, much like BMO did. there was not a single main cast member in the whole thing! and like i said before, much of peppermint butlerâs character in the show is based on his very sweet relationship to his mother, princess bubblegum, so when they showed a single (hilarious) photo of them together it made me sad we didnât get any scenes with them together. it would have STOLEN this episode. and they teased the hunson golf photo, and death!!! and jake appeared in a photo T_T last jake appearance.Â
it also suffers because Peppermint Butler is clearly not himself, imo he was way more entertaining in the Together Again special, where we seem him back to his ânormalâ self.Â
i dont think peps being a dark wizard was something to âkill offâ exactly. i wonder what was going on there? was that actually peps, or was that a spirit he cursed himself with based on himself? we at least know in the future he does become a dark wizard again, and even princess :) this special didnât answer those questions but lol.Â
THE GOOD STUFF, because yes, there was a lot of good stuff!Â
God, Iâm with Aracle and Maya on this - I LOVE Cadebra and her relationship to Pep. I wish she was even in more of this - I would love to watch the adventures of Cadebra and Pepbut in their first year of school, like in the end credits.
That, imo, is where the heart of the special lay - Peppermint Butlerâs attempts to impress himself, versus Cadebraâs self acceptance and desire to follow her dreams of being a goofy goober, no matter what other people thought of her.Â
It turned out that Cadebra is a responsible student and family member. I really liked that. Her scenes with Abracadaniel were, somehow, my favourite in the entire special!Â
I like that theres a lot of cool magic towards the end of this special, and a lot of HORRIFYING DEATH. It wouldnât be adventure time if you didnât randomly kill off child characters. Poor Spader, I hated you but damn, what a grim fate.Â
I like that Bufo and Caledonius had this crush/hatred thing going on, but they were part of the same cult in the end.Â
I didnât like the giant peps scene at the end, the monster was extremely milquetoast compared to the madness we usually get in AT. Obsidian, for example, had the awesome Larvo design. Nemesis had some INSANE dark magic!!!! I wish they drew more from that episode.Â
Considering how much Steve Little appears in this special, I do feel bad for Mace (little Peps). He said he would have really benefitted from coaching, but recieved none. He had to re-record his lines 3 times! Judging from his description of events, Wizard City was a hard time for him.Â
The wizard school did remind me, heavily, of both The Owl House and OK KO. Personally I was hoping AT would offer me something more insane, but I do love both of those shows, and I know Wizard City was on a really tight schedule.Â
I think they should have spent less time on the school bullying plot, and skipped straight to MURDER.Â
We did have a cold opening, not on par with Together Againâs at all, but damn!
I am wondering where I would put this in the watch list? I do think it should sit after Obsidian as the third special. The intro scene makes it clear this takes place at the same time as Obsidian!!!
Well, that was it, the last ep of AT for the next few years at least T_T
i think together again was the better finale, definitely. but wizard city feels pretty detached from AT for me, despite the familiar characters it tonally isnât like the show other than the awesome brutal death scenes. I thought the last 11 minutes was easily the best in the special! Which, honestly, is how it should be, though I do wish it gripped me more. Maybe Iâm just not the target audience for Wizard City? It feels like something I would find very compelling if I was a bit younger!Â

Thoughts and questions on Pesterquest Volumes 1 & 2! Two days late, but better late than never I guess!
Overall:
-[insert all the heart emoji pics ever]
-The title screen's kinda ominous, what with the music and the glitchy logo... Also kinda fitting for what goes down in certain routes of the launch volumes, though. (It should be noted that Friendsim's first volumes were relatively calm compared with later ones as well.)
~VOLUME 1~
-No fucking shit MC would be pissed off, and at Scratch specifically. Thankfully, the Best Guest (Spades Slick)'s here and has them covered while they go off on a new adventure... though if a certain other DS decides to poke around here and fuck shit up, methinks he's going to catch some fucking hands. And i'll be here cheering the MC on.
-MC now has the powers of the house juju (canonically the most powerful thingy in all the narrative, as it can retcon pretty much anything) and therefore the ability to zap anywhere... though it came at the cost of their memories of Friendsim. Obviously this had to happen because they had to forget they read Homestuck in order to properly befriend the cast, but in-universe... did they get âscratchedâ somehow? (Is that what happened to Fozzer back then?)
-Also, they were trying to go back to their friends in Alternia... we're going to have fun when we get to the Hivebent trolls. (inb4 the âprobably vriskaâ thing comes back here; there's no way the MC isn't recovering their memories at some point)
-Scorist, sign of the Mutineer Mail
-And with the MC's yeeting of John's mail into a sewer, Pesterquest officially becomes a whole ass No SBURB AU. It's a shame the bunny had to be lost too, but there's a possible reason for that: breaking (more) timeloops, both here and in post-scratch Earth (Jake helping Jade build Liv Tyler the bunny)
-I hope they do get to play another, non- world-destroying game all together, though... wait, now that they're not playing Sburb they could play Minecraft, when it releases in about a month from now!!
-Unstoppable force (John wanting to know wtf happened to his mail) meets unmovable object (MC's willingness to keep digging themselves deeper in order to make friends)
-The beta kids are confirmed to be pretty much each other's only friends... :(
-MC looked like a weird alien on Alternia, but here on Earth they're just shaped like a friend, and nothing else.
-Dave's here too!! and he's also understandably concerned about this random Not Mailman that popped out of nowhere, at least at first. Considering we know Volume 4's title (The Loneliest Girl in the World) Volume 3 will probably feature him.
-mc Hass the ghost blanket
-MC says the house juju may belong to Lucifer... which obviously means Lord English, but might also refer to Vriska... (lucifer means âlight- bringerâ, and iirc vriska did have some overlap with the whole âdemon without an eye and an armâ foreshadowing??)
-Considering Rose's volume, John probably finds out about the MC's powers in his good route, while in his bad one they both go on a stroll through time... then again, we don't know if this is like Friendsim, where only the good ends were âcanonâ...
-Whenever people need to Discuss Important Tactics, John's backyard's the first place anyone thinks about. Good to know there can be multiple people running around with retcon powers though.
-We get to see something of what led up to the Masterpiece, after who knows how long! And John gets to imagining what events will lead to him and his friends getting colorful pajamas, powers and four (4) new friends... not that he knows that *he specifically* won't have that future. John's bad route is... actually very depressing when you think about it...
-the first thing i thought of when john said that he thought Future Him & Co kept saying âenglishâ was that they were telling jake to get off the pogo ride before he like fell off and fucking died or something... and then a while later i was like Wait Fuck They Meant Lord English He Sure As Hell Exists
-even back at the very beginning of homestuck, dad's dadly energies are too powerful
~VOLUME 2~
-This singlehandedly catapulted Rose to my Most Favorite Characters list; not that I didn't love her before, but now im love her even more.
-We know now that all the kids wanted to play SBURB, be it because of Weird Destiny Stuff or to have a good time with their friends, but Rose was the one who wanted to play the most... to talk with Jaspers again. This hasn't been addressed in this volume, but it might be in later ones.
-Good kitty, best cryptid. Also, Mom Lalonde's guide to lab intruders: sic a pumpkin tiger on 'em. Then again if she really thought we were a danger to her or to Rose we'd been sniped before we knew she was there...
-Rose doesn't have a short end; the first choice of her route only decides whether we befriend Cryptid Mc Whiskers (plus get some additional dialogue) or not...* or at least that's what i thought before seeing the image rips orz
-She's the kind of person who has a lot of interests but also has trouble settling down and focusing on one at a time... yall mind if i relate? (also, adhd rose??)
-And now we begin again the timeless MC tradition of âaccumulating clothing from friendsâ. *At least in one route, apparently.
-MC gets into one of those âScrew This I'm Doing (What I Think Is) The Right Thingâ moods, though they do mellow out later and Rose didn't take it badly. To be honest after the oatmeal thing I thought they'd head for the kitchen, rather than get rid of the alcohol; now we'll have to see if it has any effect...
-!!!!! Jade & Rose interacting ON SCREEN!!!! (also, Jade seems to still have access to Prospit despite the fact that they're not playing Sburb anymore... is this where âThe Town Mouse and the Country Mouseâ (the paradox space comic) hapens??)
-Bec's acting weird... wonder what's up with him.
-Then again, even in her good route Rose seems vaguely aware that something's different; in her bad route she straight up does Weird Light Shit, while apparently being able to hear MC's narration and probably referencing her Land (her comment about the rain lighting up a little). Looks like you can take the game away from the players, but you can't take the game out of the players... Rose's a Seer of Light whether she plays or not, and same with the others.
-Rose's routes are kind of weird in that the good one looks like it's going to be the bad one (re: MC getting in one of their stubborn moods, see two points above), while the bad one looks like it's the good one until it doesn't. Before getting there I genuinely thought Rose was going to have 2 good ends.
-We get some talk on wizards and witches, and we also get to read some fragments of Complacency of the Learned!!! Which is very much a subversion of typical wizard stuff, as Rose told us; even if she has a genuine interest in wizards she's still putting her own spin on things... kinda like fans interacting with content, maybe.
-Wizards hoard knowledge for themselves, while Rose, as a Seer of Light, explicitly guides others with her knowledge; from the SBURB walkthrough in GameFAQs (which she ripped from Earth's internet to upload it onto a server on the Furthest Ring, so it would help more people) to the book she wrote on the meteor. No wonder she despises them.

The Pet Cemeteries
Yes, there are two. Â Imagineer Kim Irvine (daughter of "Madame Leota" Leota Toombs) came up with the idea for the first one in the early 1980's. Â Not a lot of time and effort went into the project. Â Kim just purchased off-the-shelf yard statues of a dog, cat, skunk, and frog (complete with mouth hole for squirting water) and had Imagineer Chris Goosman compose some macabre epitaphs for the pedestals. Â They were put in the vacant yard on the north side of the HM, alongside the wheelchair access path, reportedly to give them something to look at over there.
(pic by Monstersgoboo)
BIG JAKE Here lies my good dog Jake. Chasing a toad down a well was his one mistake. In memoriam MISS KITTY After losing eight lives you still had no fear. You caught a snake in your ninth and that's why you're here. R.I.P. BULLY You didn't drink, you didn't smoke. I just can't figure what made you croak. In loving memory of our pet STRIPEY You may be departed, But your presence will always linger on. Everyone seemed to like this little HM secret, so in 1993 they put another one in the front yard.
It has proven so popular that they subsequently added similar pet cemeteries to the WDW and Tokyo HMs. And so on. Those are the well-known facts, familiar to most Mansionites, if not to the general public. Â Beyond that basic history, no one has bothered to say much. Â But Long-Forgotten readers are a tough and discriminating audience. Â They ask, nay, demand more. Â Pry up those rocks and see what's crawling around underneath. A new addition came to the original pet cemetery in the summer of 2016. They needed to add another exhaust vent for the train tunnel going behind the HM and decided to make a virtue of necessity by disguising the vent as a crypt. So far so good, but the crypt is in the pet cemetery, and they made it up as a goofy, elephant grave. The crypt itself is tolerable, falling within the wide embrace of Victorian eccentricity (which, after all, gave us elephant foot umbrella stands), but that trunk looks absolutely awful. How can anyone over the age of eight, let alone Disney Imagineering, look at the exterior and landscaping of the Anaheim HM and conclude that it is an appropriate venue for this sort of zany kookiness? Barf. This looks like a refugee from the execrable queue in Orlando, disaffectionately known in these parts as PLQ:
Sometime around October a plaque appeared on the front:
More cutsie-wootsie stuff, ill-suited to the dignified exterior of the HM. And I hadn't noticed the mouse in previous photos, so I'll point to it now as part of the whole package. Anyway, bleahh. I'm only glad all of this is in a place generally unseen and easily ignored. I look forward to spending a lot of time forgetting it exists. As I said in the last post, I'm not a huge fan of the PC. Â I think most purists and traditionalists see it as an unwelcome intrusion of sheer fantasy before the attraction even begins and would happily see it gone. Â That's more or less been my position too, and yet I can't get worked up about it. Â Something about the pet cemetery is okay, and it's time to figure out why. Â Let's take a closer look. Much of the front yard version simply repeats the formula of the old one. Â Once again you've got a lot of store-bought statuary sitting on pedestals with macabre epitaphs. Â In fact, two of the statues (the frog and the skunk) are virtually identical to their back yard counterparts, although they have new names and texts. Â The main difference out here is that some dates are attached. Â The frog is "Old Flybait" ("He croaked, August 9 1869") and the skunk is "Beloved Lilac" ("Long on curiosity...Short on common scents, 1847"). Â There's also "Rosie" ("She was a poor little pig, but she bought the farm, 1849") and a dog named "Buddy" ("Our friend until the end"). The latter may be a long-overdue tribute to Buddy Baker, the musical genius behind the HM score. Â The dating formula is obvious in the case of Old Flybait; it's exactly 100 years before the HM opening day, and this suggests that the other dates are really cryptic references to 1947 and 1949, probably the birth years of the Imagineers involved. There's nothing terribly out of place in any of these examples. Â They are all of a piece. Â We can easily imagine one or several family members in the mansion's long history being animal lovers and burying their pets out front, complete with whimsical epitaphs. Â Even if the choice of animals is eccentric in some cases, there is nothing surreal involved, not even anything supernatural. In one case, however, these conventional statues are arranged in such a way as to suggest that the animals involved have business to conduct in the afterlife.
There is a clever thematic continuity between this cluster and some of the relationships you encounter inside the house. Â Imagine the graveyard executioner, a man who in life wielded the power of death but who has now followed his victims into the grave. Â It's called irony. Â Better still, imagine the cat as Constance and the birds as her husbands, and you can feel the same chemistry at work. Â No one forms a partnership with Death so powerful and so lasting as to avoid the same fate as Death's other victims. Â It's a classic statement, made at least three times in the attraction, starting with this tableau. Â I think the cat-and-bird set is perhaps the high water mark of the pet cemeteries. There is, however, a whole other set of grave markers. Â These are original WDI designs, and they have a more fantastical flavor. Â I suspect that it is these that rub some fans the wrong way. Â There's Fi Fi the dog, with her cruciform tombstone made of crossed bones and her portrait with crossed-X eyes (like in the funnies). Â This piece is significant for reasons that have nothing to do with the intentions of the designers. Â It represents a change in the general culture between 1969 and 1993, but that will be the topic of another post. Â For the moment, I'll simply note that it is the only cross-shaped headstone in the entire attraction, including all of the scale models and all of Marc Davis's concept art. The other weird monuments are for a snake, a bat, a rat, a fish, and a spider. Â The pieces are nothing if not stylish.
It's a good deal harder to imagine these as simply the products of animal lovers in the Mansion's history. Â The style of the monuments themselves is too bizarre. Â Perhaps we are to imagine not merely animal lovers, but insane animal lovers, if we want to keep these within the imaginative realm of a real house with a history of real occupantsâwhich is the starting point of the HM voyage. If imagining these pet monuments as items designed by crazy family members seems a stretch, then these freaky-deaky things simply don't belong here. Â For me, there are enough tales of nutball Victorians to keep it all just barely within bounds. As if to illustrate exactly that point, Craig Conley sent me in November of 2016 the following clipping from a 1913 edition of Popular Mechanics, noting an 1855 grave marker for a fish.
Okay, even if we are not necessarily in the realm of fantasy, you still wonder what the original Imagineers were shooting for. Â In one of the Long-Forgotten threads at Micechat, someone argued that pieces like Freddie the Bat were inspired by Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas, which would eventually take over the whole Mansion every Fall and Winter, of course. Â If you compare concept art for Freddie with typical NBC artwork, the similar look and feel is indeed striking.
But the dating is against it. Â NBC was released the same year the pet cemetery was installed: 1993. Â Better to look elsewhere for inspiration for this fantastic and surreal streak. Â [Edit: But see new evidence below.] Â As a matter of fact, the original HM Imagineers did kick around some lunatic pet ideas for the HM. Â Ken Anderson toyed with having a man-eating octopus in a pit in the middle of a room in his 1957 Ghost House. Â Which is pretty . . . out there.
Then there's this delightful but unused Marc Davis gag:
But if we're looking for justification for adding an element of the strange and fantastic to the Haunted Mansion, the obvious place to look is in Rolly Crump's unused "Museum of the Weird" designs. Â Do I detect a whiff of the Museum in the pet cemetery? (Or *sniff* is that just a dead fish?)
Very, very few people know this, but Rolly actually designed some bizarre tombstones for the HM. Â Where they would have been used, I can't imagine, but it must be admitted that Freddie the Bat has nothing on Velma Wingspan when it comes to eccentricity, and isn't the spidery lettering style used on the pet cemetery stones just a teeny weeny bit reminiscent of Rolly's "Museum" font?
"But even if Ken, Marc, and Rolly kicked these kinds of ideas around, they ultimately decided NOT to go in that direction, so even if the pet cemetery Imagineers were drawing inspiration from those guys, they also overrode their judgment by going ahead with this kind of thing." Yeah, I hear that, and it's a good point, but I still take some comfort in the idea that the newer Imagineers respected and revered the original masters and sought to draw inspiration from their work. Â And anyway, since the pet cemetery, even at its most surreal, can be placed within the imaginative orbit of the Mansion, I've decided to call a truce on this one. New Evidence for Tim Burton's Influence One of our "Anonymous" commenters directs our attention to a short 1984 film by Tim Burton, Frankenweenie, produced by Walt Disney pictures. Â Reportedly, Disney fired Burton after making it, claiming he had wasted company resources and had produced a film too dark for Disney to use. Â It later had video and DVD releases. Well, SOMEONE at Disney liked the film. Â There can be little doubt that it was a direct influence on the front yard pet cemetery. Â The film is a parody/homage to Frankenstein, so there are important graveyard scenesâin a pet graveyard. Â It appears also in the film's opening titles.
Fifi's tombstone at Disneyland is obviously taken almost directly from this movie.
There are several bone-cruciform tombstones in the Frankenweenie cemetery, but "Sparky" is the main animal character in the film.Â
Even the shape of Fifi's head and the "X's" for her eyes may havebeen inspired by various other tombstones seen in the film.
Then there's "Earl."
There are also tombstones for a goldfish and a snake in the Burton graveyard.
This raises the distinct possibility that Imagineers (or at least Kim Irvine) were aware of Burton's work on Nightmare while it was in production and saw some of the models, and so possibly that artwork was an additional influence on the style of the 1993 HM pet cemetery. A big thanks goes to "Anonymous" for the tip.

could you do 38-41 and b, c, and d for oc asks?
oh gosh, bless you, kind human; I genuinely thought nobody was gonna ask anything ^^
Iâm gonna answer using my favorite OC, Jake, b/c Iâve had him for over 4 years and at this point heâs the loudest voice in my head 24/7
.
38âWhat memory do they revisit the most often?
His favorite memory is the night of November 10th, 2033 (I use him in a timeline thatâs 20 years ahead of rl present day, so right now âpresent dayâ is 2037, so this was a few years ago). He was eighteen, a freshman at NYADA, and that was the night that he debuted on Broadway, and also confessed to his best friend that heâd fallen in love with her, and she shocked him with the revelation that it was mutual, and they kissed for the first time/have been together ever since. Thatâs the one he voluntarily revisits most often, but there are a few INvoluntary ones too. Itâs pretty often that he thinks back to his 36-hour abduction in January â34, and to the day he almost died, June 6th, 2034, when his great (times a billion) aunt HĂ©lene drove a knife through his heart and his great (times a billion and one) uncle Thomas came within seconds of being too late to destroy the doppelganger curse and save him. Occasionally he thinks of those in a PTSD way, like nightmares and flashbacks, but mostly itâs in gratitude that heâs even still alive. It gave him a unique relationship with mortality, and it shapes how he lives his life. Makes him appreciate everything that much more.
39âHow easy is it for them to ignore flaws in other people?
Pretty damn easy actually. Heâs one of the sweetest, most empathetic human beings ever to skip the earth, even BEFORE the curse gave him even more perspective, and he was raised super liberally and conscientiously. Heâs always trying to put himself in other peopleâs shoes, cut them slack, understand their motives and/or limitations, etc. To the point where, in cases where he falls short on that (because he IS, in fact, human), he feels goddamn terrible about it. But itâs just the status quo for him to be sensitive to others, and his patience level is through the roof, so flaws in others donât even tend to bother him in the first place unless theyâre likeâŠ.the âdrowns babiesâ kinds of flaws.
40âHow sensitive are they to their own flaws?
Extremely. He got his motherâs martyr complex, so when he gets something wrong and it hurts someone else, it hits him hard. He holds himself super accountable for things heâs done wrong, including things that the curse, while it was still around, MADE him do against his will, AND things that he just plain didnât mean to do/realize he was doing, like inadvertently overshadowing his sister and half-brother. He ends up reaming himself for shit like that, begging forgiveness to the point of tears, and forcing himself to remember it all the time so that he never does anything like that again. Plus he also judges himself for his attention issues brought on by his ADHD, and his tendency to be the highest-energy person in the room. He even scolds himself for accidentally guilting people with puppy eyes when he didnât even know he was making puppy eyes. Basically he judges himself so much more harshly than heâd ever judge anyone else, EVEN having grown up in a family that doted on him and bombarded him with the idea that he was pretty much the ideal Golden Boy. (If anything, he feels guiltier /polices his own flaws more BECAUSE of that. He was already favored, so the least he can do is make sure he makes it up to everyone who wasnât by being his best to them.)
41âHow do they feel about children?
He and Lisa (the girlfriend mentioned above) are gonna have three, but they wonât be born until 2042 (a son, Sean), 2047 (a daughter, Sierra), and 2049 (another son, Ryan). But right now, he and Lisa are only 22 and 24, theyâre only living together at this point and just enjoying that the universe is no longer actively trying to murder either of them, so theyâre SOOOO not ready for kids yet. But he loves them wherever he finds them. His littlest cousin Gabe is three years old now, and he adores babysitting himâŠ. Heâs ALWAYS loved kids, basically. He loves their imaginations, and their fascination with everything, and how strongly they love you, and how easily they believe; how you can make anything into something magical for themâŠ. Heâs known since he was about 14 that he definitely wanted to be a father someday. Lisa comes first, of course (sheâs a real part of his life NOW, whereas his kids still only exist in the hypothetical at this point), so if she told him tomorrow that she didnât want children, heâd just think of another way to be around them on a regular basis. Maybe heâd join Big Brothers/Big Sisters or something. But Jas (@faeriviera, Lisaâs creator) and I have the godlike advantage (muahaha) of knowing in advance sheâs gonna be onboard. So yeah. Heâs gonna have three loud, happy, unique, incredible kids within the next 5-12 years, and heâs gonna be an active, doting, amazing father, and absolutely adore every second with them.
BâWhat inspired you to create them?
Honestly? Aaron Tveit did. Because originally, Jake was a very, VERY minor character in our overall plot. Back when Jas and I were still playing mostly with his PARENTSâ gen in the ACTUAL present day, he was just sort of an NPC child, the impish kid brother of Gia, the established daughter of one of our ships. Heâd never even had lines. But then one day, after Iâd gotten obsessed with the Les Mis movie and âdiscoveredâ Aaronâs other work, I had this huge moment of revelation where I realized he looked EXACTLY like the lovechild of his parentsâ faceclaims. I told Jas Iâd found adult!Jake, and suddenly everything just started filling in from there. His career changed from failure as an aspiring actor to success onstage. I borrowed some traits that felt natural from what we know of Aaronâs personality (the sweetness, the exuberance, the drive), and then other things started to develop on their own from there (his ADHD, his lack of talent at sports, his fear of birds, his insane appetite, the time he broke his leg, the doppelganger curse, etc.)âŠ.I kind of feel like I owe Aaron thanks for that someday, which is obviously kind of comically unnecessary, but still. He was the jumping-off point that inspired the most thoroughly detailed OC Iâve ever created.
CâDid you have trouble figuring out where they fit in their own story?
Not at all. He sort of evolved specifically into the space we needed filled, and then his story evolved around him. The entire doppelganger curse grew into what it became purely because of a throwaway joke about Jake looking too much like Enjolras, who had appeared in our âverse already, and then we (mostly Jas) went âwait, what ifâŠ?â So if anything, he solved our central storyline indecision problems.Â
DâHave they always had the same physical appearance, or have you had to edit how they look?
Not since the eureka moment, no, I havenât changed a thing. Although Iâve needed his younger self for a couple of flashback plots, so now I use kid pics of Austin Kane for reference for that. And for anything where heâs a baby, I just picture this one stock photo I found. The best examples are compiled on his Charahub; Iâll just screencap that and share it âcause yeah.
.
here is the ask post for reference in case anyoneâs intrigued/bored enough to want to know anything elseÂ
