Double Down x GN Reader

Felt like writing some DD stuff instead of answering my asks. Sorry gang LOL

Oliver’s hands are freezing. His warm breath does nothing to calm the trembling of his palms. He doesn’t mind so much. He can hardly tell at all. His shaking fingers encircle his arms and he watches the falling snow closely.

The cold is his friend. He’s always liked the snow, as much as he can like anything. An unfeeling machine, and an unhappy reality. 

Oliver is unequivocally alone.

“Hey, are you cold? Come back inside.” A voice calls from behind him. The warm, dulcet blanket that is his mother’s voice. He takes a calm breath, feeling the icy winds enter his lungs a final time before he turns and enters his home.

Oliver knew what warmth was supposed to feel like. He knew what it was like to be with another person. He knew all too well.

Yet…

The first time his hands felt warmth was when you held them. Your radiance struck all the nerves in his system. He shut down the second your hands embraced his.

His breath shudders as your lips part to speak, anticipating your next words with short pants falling from his own lips.

“...Can I have my pen back?” 

Your eyes shone like marbles against the sunlight you seemed to emit. No, you cannot have your pen back. It’s his now, and he doesn’t want to give it back. He holds it in a tight fist against his chest, not speaking a single word.

You give up after a while, eyebrows furrowed as you awkwardly step away.

It’s cold again.

He sees you in the hallways, on occasion. He can’t stand to look at you, head down as he scurries past every time. He doesn’t deserve you. Not after all the people before you.

Graduation came and went. He left broken hearts in his wake, and you left nothing but light. He’s never felt so cold after that day. Frostbite nips at his fingertips the second you make your escape, leaving him alone for the last time.

Over the next few years, Oliver can hardly get out of bed. He stares at the ceiling, gripping his pillow and wishing it were you. He’s barely got enough money to sustain himself for the next month from his inheritance, but he couldn’t care less.

Gambit finds him alone at the bar of his casino one night. 

“You look like someone with nothing to lose.” Gambit leans his head against the palm of his hand as he glances at Oliver from the corner of his eye. His smile is kind.

“Join us.”

For once, he felt powerful. With a Scythe in hand, Oliver was the first to die. All that’s left is a cold-blooded player and executioner, Double Down.

Until you appeared at the casino one day. He could feel the ice in his heart thawing as he made eye contact. Surely you don’t recognize him, but he knows it’s you. He knows that warmth.

You didn’t stay for long. He didn’t either. He left without alerting anyone, just to get a taste of your warmth once again. 

Your home wasn’t far from his. How could he have missed that? He’s sure he’s had a few flings in your area. He shudders. Now’s not the time to think of them.

You’re alone. Alone in an empty house. Alone like he has been, all of these years without you.

He doesn’t hesitate to break the lock, even knowing you can probably hear it shattering under the weight of his Scythe. He doesn’t care about that now, not when you’re so close.

He’s panting as he stands in your living room, his eyes dilated as he stares at you. You, perfect and divine. You, who is light and the sun and all things holy. You, who saved him. So, then… Why do you look so scared?

“Oliver?” The name feels foreign on your tongue. This isn’t the kid you knew, who shyly avoided you in the hallways and scribbled your name in hearts in his notebook. 

For a moment, he really is Oliver again. Oliver, who loved you.

But he isn't. He’s Double Down, the mysterious murderer.

You take a nervous step back at his lack of response, and he takes a panicked one toward you.

“N-no! You don’t understand! You don’t know me, but I know you.” He takes several steps closer, trapping you between him and the wall.

“Please… Please, just touch me again. One more time.” He murmurs, his eyes never leaving yours.

When you don’t move, he grits his teeth and snatches up your hand, placing it to his heart.

“Do you feel it? My heart’s racing. I can’t stand it anymore.”

He smiles widely, trembling as he keeps your hand against him in his tight grip. 

“Please don’t leave me. Stay with me. Don’t go away again.” His smile never drops as tears fall down his flushed cheeks. 

“It’s so cold…” He whimpers, resting his forehead against your shoulder. His arms slowly encircle your waist and he pulls you right up against him.

It’s a perfect moment. You, squirming in his arms, his and his alone.

Billions of years from now, the sun will die and take everything with it. But you, the radiant warmth Double Down has never felt before, will always be within his grasp. From this day forward, the sun will never burn out.

i may be crucified for this opinion but

one of the many reasons i think dds deserves a remake is just how little impact some of the characters have and it’s really fucking sad. unless they’re party members or antagonistic forces they don’t get nearly as much screen time as they deserve and i think that hurts them as characters???

jinana and lupa especially. i get the setting of the first game is a battle royale that turned into a cannibal battle royale so of course not everyone could live but they kinda didn’t get as much screen time as they deserved. i mean think about it they kinda just exist to introduce their tribe, interact with the embryon for a bit, disappear, reappear once or twice, then next time you see them they’ve succumbed to hunger, you beat the shit out of them, and they end up dying. what little they are given does make you like them don’t get me wrong but a lot of that rides on dialogue which, as someone who loves seeing people experience certain plot stuff of games i enjoy, i kinda noticed that it was a really mixed result. it’s either “oh no anyways” with maybe the player getting a little melancholic when they get brought up again or the player doesn’t care. considering how important their struggles and mini arcs are that’s not good??? the fact that they exist solely to develop argilla and gale is a shame since unless you like the exchanges they have their deaths don’t have that big of an impact. they do get mentions and all that in 2 yet it kinda just. makes me question it more from the standpoint of what could’ve been done with them or the giant emotional aftermath that should’ve happened. this isn’t to say they can’t die or whatever but considering the interesting conflicts dds introduces and how it already struggled to explore it as much as it could’ve, jinana and lupa really did have the potential to help remedy some of those issues.

and then there’s fred aka the smokey of dds. i still don’t know why he exists except to explain why lupa somewhat knows what a child is and to introduce the existence of tiny humans to the gang. i’m sorry i straight up forget he was a character at points.

qds fixed a lot of this yes yet i still think it’s important to point out on a game standpoint, since most people who play dds don’t end up reading qds, and i really don’t think actual important contextual stuff or major aspects of a game’s themes should be exclusive to books. it’s not as bad as something like fnaf or other mascot horrors—that shit was over a decade later—but it is a major writing issue and i don’t think the fact that the original lead writer got sick and had to leave means there wasn’t a writing decline. you can tell there was stuff that was going to be built upon only to be abandoned or underdeveloped.

it’s extra sad because this is straight up one of the best instances of world-building the series has ever had, and the whole cannibalistic character drama mixed with spiritual and buddhist + hindu themes is something so inherently interesting while also being in some ways taboo??? there’s not a lot of games out there at least not made by indie developers that get that risky since it’s not marketable, and something like that is next to nonexistent now in the mainstream market. we fuckin need games like the dds duology that challenge the status quo and goddammit if it got expanded upon and had more development for side characters that would be actually perfect.

Gelis and Nicholas. GELIS AND NICHOLAS. A whole book of them being gloriously MARRIED. More than indefinable "love" they demonstrate that they respect each other, value each other, recognise when the other needs space, they trust each other... They're such a TEAM and it's BEAUTIFUL.

Also the way they TEASE each other. Glorious.

They were in their own house, in their own room and nearly in their own bed. It had been rather precipitate. She said, ‘Gloucester agreed? You’ve got what you wanted?’

‘Not yet,’ said Nicholas crossly.

‘From Gloucester.’ She couldn’t breathe. Her anxieties fled.

‘He wouldn’t have been any good,’ Nicholas explained. ‘He doesn’t have those little –’

‘The meeting?’ she said. But she was just teasing now, and was punished for it.

Like, their love just fits around their life and friends and it's BEAUTIFUL. (Lol except when he kept being late to things because of it. Snigger.)

JODI. I loved seeing Jodi grow up and becoming a man, so well tutored by his family and friends.

HENRY. OH HENRY. With your beauty and blond hair, but also your brown stubble and your height and your one dimple... The slow, grudging, gradual, hesitant edging towards seeing that families could have a healthy dynamic, that silliness and learning and skill and pride could be GOOD things... It broke my heart to see how damaged and messed up his whole worldview was. There was hope... He was finding common ground with Jodi...

Pause to shout out to this glorious line from Gelis in a glorious scene:

'Nicholas, if you don’t sit, I shall take Henry at his word and carry him off to the bedroom. And that will frighten him silly.’

BUT HENRY. It's a testament to DD's writing that I felt such profound sadness when he and Simon died. It was heartbreaking. How could I be so sad by the death of two characters who had been so irredeemably and consistently vile? It was beautiful and destroyed me.

Leading to another thing I loved - how grief is shown in the HoN. One of the most striking parts of the whole series was Nicholas's grief over Marian, then again his response to Henry and Simon BROKE ME.

The storm broke for Nicholas then. The black pillar of grief with its debris crashed upon him unawares, overwhelming in its ferocity; worse than the sorrow for his people at Nancy, for Godscalc or even for Umar and Marian; Felix; Zacco… reaching back beyond that, to a bottomless misery he could not remember; beating him down as he crouched. He wanted to scream. He could not keep silent. Anselm Adorne, hearing, set his lips but did not come near. Andro Wodman, forced awake, clenched his eyes to shut out the anguish.

It just touches so many characters, and that grief is allowed space to breathe and to be. I'm thinking Nicholas's raw distress in contrast to Adorne's quieter grief, the loss so deeply felt lingering from Will Rogers' death... etc.

Similarly, I loved seeing the lingering impacts of trauma following the battle at Nancy from Caprice and Rondo. They don't just get over it. Robin has life-changing injuries, which are dealt with sensitively, and he has to learn to live with them. John seems to have some kind of PTSD too, how aimless and lost he seems to find himself afterwards, how they both just need to talk about it but everyone is afraid to. They heal, but it takes TIME, and isn't just forgotten or brushed aside.

Seeing the dots appear that will connect to Lymond... RANKIN!!! (One thing I'm confused about - so, Sybilla is Jordan and Isabelle's child. I've seen the theory that Jordan's blame of Rankin for Margaret's death (HEARTBREAKING) was what led to them having to marry secretly. Really, though?? I just didn't pick up on lingering animosity from the epilogue, when the families still evidently hang out a lot? It seems like a stretch to me but I can't see any other reason.)

I have to comment also on JULIUS. THE PIG. I'd half seen a vague spoiler that he wasn't all good, and had thought him generally untrustworthy/a bit of an idiot/greedy anyway for quite a few books. So it wasn't a huge shock. I LOVED their showdown fight though. I know people herald the swordfight between Lymond/Richard in GoK as The Greatest but I have honestly preferred both this one and Lymond/Gabriel's duel at the end of DK. It was just so brutal and hard and desperate and bloody exciting to read.

Ok that's it off the top of my head. PHEW. I completed my self-set and entirely arbitrary aim of reading the full HoN series within a month, and feel a bit lost now!

Whoever said this series was a slow burn, TRULY. I only started to feel like I was beginning to understand Nicholas like... book 6 onwards. I loved that understanding dawning and developing. I ended with a big, stupid, contended grin on my face.

i said i'd share my thoughts, so here they are so far >:DD

part: one, two, three, four / ??

it took yuu long enough to actually TELL CROWLEY that grim was eating those rocks :')))) makes 110% sense that grim would lash out if he's been ingesting 5-overblot's-worth of purified blot

but also, i...can't believe it took twst this long to actually explain what was going on when we were fighting the overblots jsfksdfk like this whole time i've been assuming that people just. get knocked out or tired, but what they explained made so much more sense.

crowley has said that overblotting is rare. but then how come at nrc ?? there's been 5 consecutive overblots in less than a school year ?? (the twst timeline so far is from sept till around feb, bc book 5 was set during a "spring festival" iirc) the reason they don't know enough about overblots is bc they don't have enough subjects who have overblotted to research, so... i do wonder if there's something else at play here, maybe something has changed in NRC since yuu came ?

WHAT ????? they're ignihyde blue....also the boat ? logo ? on their arms ??? what the heck does that mean ??? ok wait i can vaguely read out letters on their arm,,,styx ?? like the river styx in the greek underworld ? having a headache, are we gonna see the underworld somehow in this book ? wait, if the facility or whatever is called styx, are these robots the "charons" ? they're carrying oar-like staffs + they're trying to capture targets D and E and bring them in,,,,kinda like how charon brought souls in a boat to cross the styx river in myth. (also i was right, leona called them ferrymen >:DD)

(n they have grim. interesting that they'd ignore yuu tho, considering it was them who is the string that connects all the overblots.)

(also don't you just hate it when you win the battle, but then in canon the chars actually lost the battle. so you're just sitting there like -_-)

it was. very in character how each of them got captured.

vil and jamil were protecting other people (aka the freshmen, and in jamil's case, kalim) vil is really big on his responsibilities, so even though he authorized the use of magic, he still told the freshmen to stand back bc he knew they were unskilled in combat magic n that they'd get hurt bc they don't know hot to properly defend. meanwhile, jamil was probably covering any of kalim's blindspots + making sure he doesn't get hurt while looking for places where he could attack.

riddle went out with a bang, they hit him with a paralyzing beam, and he still had enough magic power to set everything on fire before they could hit him again. he also authorized everyone to fight, bc he probably believed that a group effort could take them down. as always, his sheer firepower is very impressive, the amount of magic he has and his attacking prowess is...wow.

leona....protected ruggie from harm first, saving him from glass and telling him to back off. and then he immediately scanned them to identify who they are. and of course, leona of all people, would know who they are. i think people forget, but a large reason why leona's so smart and why he skips class is bc he quite literally learned all that material when he was younger. the fact that he was the only one to recognize anti-magic plates meaning that resistance was futile and the logo from his time at the palace. (and that moment between ruggie and leona,,,,leona knows that he can trust ruggie w/ the wellbeing of savanaclaw until he returns T^T)

meanwhile azul was with idia, even though he didn't know what was happening, he got extra info from idia n ortho,,, the way azul was about to fight and idia went don't bother (bc he actually likes azul as a friend bro), and ortho went "the chances of you sustaining an injury drops by 87% if you don't struggle ^^" also. idia being concerned ? kind of ? by the ferrymen's forcefulness while coming in and taking the students is nice to see (and i KNEW it. i bet that idia's parents, or the shroud family in general, runs this Styx facility)

and they took crowley ?? crowley seems to know exactly what's going on, so i wonder why they didn't coordinate their...pick up with him beforehand (they legit destroyed so much public property + trespassed for no reason)

[ about : the plane ride ]

it's scary how they're all in a cramped dark space flying to who knows where. like how inhumane ?? they're about to take these people to do research w/ them, but clearly they don't care that they're humans, and they treat them more like convenient test subjects that have converged coincidentally in one school.

RIDDLE SLEEPING ON LEONA'S LAP IS SO FUNNY SJFDKSJFKS I CANTTTTT the way his leg was probably cramping,,,,three hours w/o moving and someone sleeping on you, he has so much patience onggg

so...styx is an organization that does research on blot. it makes perfect sense why crowley would know they'd come knocking, since they have had 5 overblots that one school year. and the shroud family are "the watchman of the isle of woe". leona explains that they take overblotted mages there. what i don't understand is why countries can't interfere with them ?? or is it that they won't interfere with their research bc...styx' research benefits them too perhaps...?

from what leona said, they handled extreme overblot cases that regular magic marshals couldn't handle aka ones that can't un-blot anymore, so why are they coming after the ob gang ? not only were some of their overblots months ago, they've also all safely un-blotted, and transitioned back to normal life... ig my question is why them, and why now.

(it's a cool detail that the ob gang actually got help after their overblots. like it wasn't like everyone just picked up where they left off, vil mentioned medical mages and proper counseling, and that means that they were able to talk to someone about the things that troubled them.)

[ about : idia's family ]

not only do they run the jupiter conglomerate, aka the google of twisted wonderland, they might also run styx ? idia did ask the charon dudes if his mom and dad were away, ig this is what the shroud family ACTUALLY does behind the scenes of their big tech and energy business.

it also explains why idia deleted all those prospective work emails in the end of book 5,,,,bc he just knows that he won't be able to work or pursue any of his other dreams. his fate has been sealed since day 1 bc he was born a shroud, so he's probably going to end up having to take over Styx and its research in the future.

(and azul. being as on-brand as ever and saying he should've made idia in debt to him....sir, his family legit just kidnapped you, chill)

You were adopted by Bain for reasons unknown, and now you kinda just live there

It takes a bit of time for the gang to warm up to you, but once they do, it's pure fun from then on out

Jiro is like the calm parental figure that teaches you coping mechanisms for things like anxiety, depression, or other issues

He's the first one to notice if something's wrong, and he would be the first one you would go to

Duke is like that really cool relative that can and will blabber on about ancient shit

He'll offer to take you to a museum of your choice on his days off, and if you take a real interest in something you see, then he'll probably steal it during a heist just to make you happpy

Sydney, Joy, and Wolf are basically your chaotic family

Joy will teach you the ropes on tech and hacking, Sydney would let you go ham on designing masks, and Wolf would help you try to make your own contraption in his workshop

These situations typically get you and the gang in some trouble [Making a mess with paint, making the most dangerous fucking contraption in humanity, accidentally hacking into some really dangerous/important database, etc]

That's where Aldsotne, Dallas, and Hoxton come in

They're like the calm and tired parents of the gang like oml give them a fucking break

If chaos ensues and it involves you, Dallas will be the first one to hear about it and immediately try to diffuse the situation

Hoxton would be the one to give you a good scolding about it, and Aldstone would be the one cleaning and teen-proofing the place where it happened

Sokol and Bonnie are the more chill ones and often like to teach you how to play games

Sokol will teach you how to play hockey, and he might even take you to an ice skating rink to teach you how to skate [if you don't know how to that is]

Bonnie would teach you the tricks behind gambling. Obviously she won't use real money when playing with you, but she'll use fake chips to demonstrate the stakes that are put on the table when in such situation

Jacket is like that weird and quiet relative that you are a little uncomfortable with but manage to get along with him after a few hours

He'll let you record your own lines for his tape recorder and might even use them during heists

Jacket also likes to offer to play video games with you, and you often beat him in them. Of course, he doesn't complain or anything because if he did, he knew he'd probably be mauled

Ethan and Hila like to invite you to record videos with them

Whether it be a vlog about daily life, a YouTube challenge, or a talent showoff, they always wanna make sure you feel included

Hell, when they post their vlogs, they'll often brag about how epic you are and make sure that you get a nice amount of attention on social media. If you're okay with it that is

All in all, the Payday gang is a pretty good family considering your whole orphan situation

Moon Knight, Issue # 33: Exploding Myths

BANGER. 

We start with a good old fashioned newsstand. On the side is a poster: 

"Exploding myths. Titans for our times. A continuing series by Joy Mercado. Upcoming features on: 

Druid Walsh and Moon Knight. 

Only in the Daily Times". 

A huge muscle bound man that is obviously Druid Walsh punches his first through the image of Moon Knight, proclaiming: "He ain't nothin'. He's nothin' but meat. Dead meat." 

And like myth, we see people talking about Druid. 

They talk about rumors and stories of his strength. 

About how he once stole a grand piano off the back of a truck then carried it up to a roof and tossed it down to crush a cop car. Another talks about how he ripped bricks out of a wall to crush the skulls of mobsters. 

More still talk about more and more acts of strength and rage. 

"He's so mean, Lady. The Druid is so mean he ain't real." 

Joy Mercado is the source of their discussion. 

She pauses to consider their information then asks "Where can I meet this Druid Walsh?" 

"Ain't you been listenin' Lady? You gotta be crazy to wanna-" 

"I'm not crazy--I'm a reporter, and I'm going to do a piece on the Druid whether you help me or not." 

They point her to the local bar and grill. 

Sure enough, inside is the towering Druid and he's running a protection racket. 

He threatens the bartender for payment but the bartender has hired his own protection. 

He beats down the gang of men without flinching then turns on the bartender. He lifts up the bar itself and throws it down on the beaten men. 

Joy Mercado stands in the doorway. She's been admiring his work. 

She compliments him and introduces herself. 

She's flirty and invites him to dinner. It's a fancy expensive place and apparently she goes there a lot to conduct her interviews. She bribes the wait staff to let in the mountain of a man and seat them in the back. 

One of the waiters compliments her most recent articles about Daredevil and Detective Flint. (Oh? What's Flint getting up to? He hanging with DD now? This poor man. No wonder he looks so done with everything all the time). 

Of course she didn’t tell Druid she was a reporter and he instantly is dismayed to realize she didn’t pick him up for a date but for an interview. 

She admits that she's working on a series about mythical figure of their time. He thought it was a date. 

She back pedals. "Well of course it's a date in a sense. A dinner date, but I...I hoped you might also consider it an interview..." 

She finds him interesting and assures him that if she is willing to want to write about him then perhaps she might want to see him again. 

He agrees to it! After all, he has taken a real shine to her. 

So she starts with the rumor about him throwing a whole grand piano off a roof. 

"That wasn't no piano--It was just a big empty crate." 

And it goes on like that. The bricks weren't rendered from a wall but were just laying there. And of course he didn't rip a street lamp out of the ground. 

Each debunked myth leaves our reporter friend more and more dismayed. 

As they talk, a pompous rich guy bumps into their table. He apologizes till he notices the look of the Druid. 

"Yugh. It would be nice if some people would learn how to bathe..." 

This upsets Druid. He gets up and picks up the guy and threatens to throw him out the window. 

This excites the reporter who suddenly has a story happening in front of her. 

"Naw... You're a jerk all right, but not the kind who deserves to go out a plate glass window...." He instead sets the guy down in a large three tier cake. 

Disappointed, Joy's enthusiasm has vanished. They leave the restaurant and she turns to go. Druid asks if she wants to see him again sometime. 

"Anything is possible, Mr. Walsh. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to make the late edition... Perhaps we'll bump into each other again sometime." 

"And Druid Walsh is left to gape at her stiff retreat. What happened to her slow and easy walk like when her hip kept rubbing his? What happened to her smile? What happened?" 

The next day! Jack Lockley buys a newspaper and heads into Gena's. 

I must say I do love the fact that EVERY SINGLE TIME Jake sees Gena, he always asks her how the kids are doing. 

A while back, Moon Knight wanted a way for people and police to reach him so he gave them Gena's diner's number. I mean... They sort of know who he is by means of Jake, and Jake can always be found there. 

Gena, I'm sure, found it thrilling at first. Poor Gena. 

"By the way Lockley, ever since you let it be known that Moon Knight can be contacted through this establishment, that phone of mine's been takin' some mighty weird rings... But there's one you should know about--From your detective friend Flint, relaying a call from someone named Joy Mercado... SHe says she's gotta see you today-matter of life and death." 

Hmmmm...

Jake is familiar with Joy and is skeptical. 

"Yeah, sure, she might miss a deadline. Some matter of life and death." 

Crawley points to the latest article. "If Druid Walsh peruses her column today, Jake, it could well be." 

Jake takes a look. Whoopse. Must not be a nice one. He decides he might need to see Joy after all. 

(I love Gena. How many cups do you think Jake has in his cab?) 

Meanwhile, Druid has one of his thugs read him the article. 

It can't be that bad, can it? 

"It says: 'My encounter with the allegedly mythic figure known as Druid Walsh began promisingly enough, in the aftermath of an epic bar fight more suited to a Hollywood back lot than to 29th street...But it soon became apparent that the Druid was little more than an ignorant scapegoat for the collective yearning of our mundane society: The pervasive need for myths, real or imagined.'" 

I'm sure once he has that explained to him, he's going to be quite upset. 

"--Can only conclude that the fabled Druid Walsh is all fable and no substance. As such, he qualifies as nothing more than a cheap thug, somewhat bizarre and certainly oafish, yet another titan with feet of clay, another modern myth exploded. Tomorrow's feature on Moon Knight, however, should prove to be a different story." 

He's pretty upset. And you know what? It's a pretty shit piece. 

Druid heads out to have a word with Joy. 

Joy is at the Daily Times taking praise for her recent piece. 

Moon Knight strides in and up to her desk. 

"You wanted to see me?" 

She asks him to take a seat for an interview. 

"And your quaint way of securing an interview with me was to cry wolf--to scream life and death, is THAT it?" 

"Ah, well... If your entire career isn't one long matter of life and death, then I don't know what--" 

"You don't know anything, Ms. Mercado!" 

Yeah... I'm not surprised that it struck a nerve. 

Just as Moon Knight is feeling pretty pissed, Druid busts in, looking for revenge.

He yells about her using him and pretending to be on a date with him. He grabs her and Moon Knight steps in. 

Druid is less than thrilled by 'the real myth' and takes a swing. He's a hard hitter. 

Moon Knight hits back, but it hardly phases this mountain of muscles. 

While Moon Knight takes a minute to recover, Druid takes the moment to kidnap Joy. 

This man knows how to take a hit. 

Out on the street, Druid is gone. 

Moon Knight calls in Frenchie. 

"Frenchie--Keep an eye out for a ten-foot tall Gorilla who's just abducted a woman." 

"Zis is a joke, oui, Marc?"

"You hear me chuckling?"

I love Frenchie. 

Druid has taken Joy to a back alley where he uncovers a picnic basket? 

"We're gonna have dinner again, Baby. Another date. But this time we're gonna be alone--And it's gonna be done the right way..." 

Lady and basket in hand, he busts into the fancy restaurant they went to before. He pulls a shotgun from the basket and tells everyone to get out. 

That’s a pretty good reference, honestly. And he has a pretty good grasp on the concept of myths. 

He goes on a rant. 

He learned to handle himself in almost any situation because of how big and tough he was and he had no fear. 

Coming back from 'nam, he tried to be a professional wrestler. Changed his look and got fangs to try to make a trademark. It backfired and his look got him kicked out of the wrestling business. 

Moon Knight gets the police report from Frenchie about the disturbance at the restaurant and heads over. 

Hey! Flint! 

"So it boils down to a fairy tale. Princess captured by ogre. Held prisoner in tower." 

"And the white knight has to rescue her, Flint." 

"Not this time, Moon Knight. This one's not just a matter of you and me. The whole special hostage unit is here. I can't--" 

Oh, Flint. You know better than to try to reason with Moon Knight. 

Up in the restaurant, Druid is ready to dine. 

What's this? The basket is filled with Dynamite! 

He sets the timer for 30 minutes. Time enough to get to know one another. 

But wait! What's this? 

His favorite way to make an entrance. (Adds a talley to the ‘busts through window’ counter. We’re at 4 here people.) 

Rematch time! 

They exchange blows. 

It'a always interesting to watch Moon Knight actually fight against badguys that also know how to fight and get close and personal. 

Marc's ability to take the worst hits and keep going are legendary. His complete lack of concern for the body and his own well being make him a wild card on the battle field and no one really knows how to deal with it. They always underestimate him. 

They exchange blow for blow. 

Down on the ground Flint faces his boss. 

"What's the matter with you, Flint? Didn't you know Moon Knight would try a grandstand play like this?!" 

"Yep. But consider this, Boss. You ever try to stop Moon Knight?" 

(I love Flint. I need more of this man in the comics) 

(This man has been through so much). 

Druid and Moon Knight continue to fight as the timer of the bomb ticks down. 

He knocks Druid down and gets Joy to the moon copter ladder. 

They fight up to the roof top, exhausted and barely able to stand. 

Druid refuses to flee. "She wanted an exploding myth!" He is determined to see out the explosion. 

Seconds left, Frenchie yells for Marc to jump. Druid collapses. Moon Knight jumps and the bombs go off. 

Druid goes up with the explosion. 

They land safe on the docks. 

Joy notices Moon Knight is wounded and bleeding. 

"And Druid Walsh is Dead. Contrary to media-shaped public opinion, we weren't immortal...Invulnerable. And you, pity you, you've missed your precious deadline." 

(Something he's grappled with time and time again in later comics and the Mackay run. The notion that he can't die. Considering where the current run is openly heading, I'm curious to see how that plays out.) 

Joy tries to defend herself, saying it wasn't like that. 

"You said it yourself-The Druid was just a dumb thug who never hurt anybody until he was pushed. Then you came along and bumped him harder than he'd ever been pushed before--All without laying a finger on him." 

"B-But he tried to kill you." 

"Only because I tried to stop him from killing himself." 

"What about me?" 

"All right...He snapped. And you'd better do some hard thinking about why he snapped. All I know is that before you came along he was largely harmless. Maybe he shouldn't have been loose in the streets...But he shouldn't be dead either." 

Give it to her, Moon Knight! 

He calls her an instigator and tells her to go back to her city room. 

He leaves her there, the building fire in the background. 

I think this particular story is really fascinating. And I might be biased, because modern myths and how they develop in places like a city are a special interest of mine. 

What makes a myth? Is there a timeline involved? How long does it take to build a legend? 

We have a large strong and temperamental man that went to war and learned how to become a survivor. Called dumb all his life and failing out of school, he learned skills and how to use his own abilities to his advantage. Clearly painted to look like an Oaf, not reading, not picking up social cues immediately, and quick to anger, he demonstrates knowledge and understanding. He notes Olypus and knows where it comes from. He knows the stories of the old Greek lores. He is no dummy. 

What’s interesting is that Moon Knight recognizes this. He doesn’t see Druid as a threat. He is obviously aware of his presence in the streets and his reputation, but he doesn’t bother him. I’m sure Jake Lockley had heard about him, since Jake keeps his eyes on the streets. 

This is a common thing with Moon Knight. The lesser villains and even a few of the big ones. He sympathizes with them. Respects them. Mourns them. 

What does Moon Knight see in the Druid? Lost dreams and survival? A man trying to find his life? A man filled with anger but still able to get by? 

There is so much Marc in so many of the villains that have unhappy endings. 

It has ALSO come to my attention that this is the LAST official Moon Knight written by Doug Moench. (He comes back briefly later on for a short run and a cameo, but this is it.)

With the jab Moon Knight takes against the reporter and publishing, I wonder what terms Moench left Marvel on. I wonder if this was the story he wanted to finish on or if he had a script that was left behind for the 1980s run. I'll get more into this later...

Trying to stop loving a 40-year-old man

a thought popped into my brain while i was reading your loooong post about filler episodes in media, and it is unfortunately quite a long thought >:D

whenever i'm writing out my SGZ! x TZE! fanfic, this thought is always at the forefront of my mind while writing:

Cassie: this Astral Plane is so cool! wow, there's so many things that are so similar to mine yet so different!

Ciara: what the FUCK why is everything in this Astral Plane trying to KILL ME????

you mentioned that characterization is really important in every story, ESPECIALLY in filler arcs, and that if you make a compelling character, they will make the story much much better, regardless of the action happening around them. whether it be plot related or not, good characterization will always make a good scene and be interesting to watch/read.

i tried to showcase characterization of the characters as much as possible; cassie is awestruck and eager to learn everything about another world, while ciara is constantly on survival mode, viewing everything as a potential threat. and yet, both of them display a sense of wonder towards each others' astral planes, both of them allowing their guards to come down and let their curiosity take hold. i try to showcase this multiple times; cassie attending capricorn's ball and wanting to learn more about how the TZE! Astral Plane functions and ciara briefly losing her survival instincts to observe the skymirror circus.

i think a lot about the plot structure of the SGZ! x TZE! fanfic, mainly because it's way different from the other fanfics i've written in the past. it is in fact mostly comprised of filler, because i really wanted to showcase how cassie and ciara behaved in scenarios that aren't life-or-death threats, which i imagine is what they're in most of the time!

lore and plot points are indeed sprinkled throughout these fillers, in the form of cassie and ciara finding out snippets of the history behind each others' Astral Planes. but they are mainly filler, simply because i think it would be fun to watch these characters that normally have a shitload of burdens weighing upon them get to experience a brief respite from those responsibilities and just enjoy themselves.

and i think it's also fun to see how they react to being put into completely out of the ordinary scenarios. how would cassie react to being threatened by a gang of pirates? how would ciara react to being forced into a dance-off with a group of birds? (definitely not spoilers for future chapters of SLM lmfaooo)

plot-driven fanfic is amazing, of course it is, but i think there's definitely some untapped potential in domestic/fluff fanfic. it's fun to see these characters sad or going through tough shit, but isn't it also fun to see these characters just have a good time?

anyway that's my ramble and my thoughts on filler arcs specifically on fanfic, i now need to go work on my english project :DD

Ah, the consequences of my actions! (I'm kidding, thank you for reading my long ramble about filler :D I hope it was useful or at least interesting!) Apologies in advance for the length of this response in turn though lol

I can definitely see the parallels! I do find it funny that both thoughts you've described for Cassie and Ciara here are also two thoughts that Cassie has had about her Astral Plane, especially at the start. She definitely has curiosity about the world and wants to know more, but she has quite a few near-death experiences and many of the residents seem to be after her in one way or another. It's not that Cassie lacks a survival instinct, but she has to learn the "rules" of the Astral Plane rather quickly to survive at all, or have others bail her out in that moment. Some aspects of her naivety in relation to the Astral Plane are directly challenged as well.

In turn, I can definitely see how Ciara's survival mode comes into play. I'd imagine that if she and Cassie were in an equally unfamiliar place together, they'd approach the unknown in different ways just based on their past experiences. Cassie might be able to help Ciara not be as fearful of some things, but Ciara might be able to help Cassie exercise more caution than she might have otherwise. And then, eventually, they'd both be able to tap into each other's sense of curiosity and wonder once the fear of danger has subsided a bit.

That's an interesting note about fanfic too, I don't write it myself but I can see how writing this particular one would be different from how you'd write others, especially more action-based ones. This crossover specifically explores a lot of stuff that DOESN'T happen in their respective stories, or at least not as much comparatively, and highlights similarities and differences with it instead. Neat stuff!

And I absolutely agree, simply exploring characters outside of action or plot relevance (in fanfic or otherwise) is not only fun, but can be really refreshing for both the author and the audience. Recently I "haha just kidding...unless?"ed myself into making a what-if scenario canon in my current draft of Starglass Zodiac, and I think the script is far better for it. There's a lot of fun moments between characters that previously wouldn't have interacted otherwise, and also it ties a lot of stuff together in a way that I really like.

How would Cassie react to being threatened by a gang of pirates? Well I'll have to see what Columba's crew has to say about that in my story, but I am very curious to see how you write it with your pirate gang! Looking forward to it :D Same for Ciara's dance-off, that sounds hilarious.

A Headcanon: The Horrible No Good Very Bad Pantsing

It had been a hell of a day. After being almost fired, sent to the mailroom, and accidentally making a baby(which I mean wasn’t her fault in the first place she was just trying to help), Tulip had now set off which Junior to deliver DD to Henry. Still having a broken wing, and after crashing and escaping a bunch of wolves, the gang decide they need to rest for the evening. 

Finding a comfortable back alley as they had now reached civilization, they all lay down to sleep. However, as Tulip gets up to stretch one last time., DD also rises. Thinking nothing of it, Tulip turns around to keep stretching. 

Slowly, DD inches closer. Finding the shiny buttons on Tulips pants to be fascinating. DD reaches for the buttons, she wants one for herself. Not realizing that they are attached to Tulips pants, DD yanks down as hard as she can!

RIIIIIPPPPP! Tulips pants come down and the button rips off! Tulip has now been pantsed in front of DD and Junior. Completely embarrassed, Tulip races to pull her pants back but but because of her bad luck, the pants rip again!

Junior busts out laughing which causes DD to giggle along as well. Fuming, Tulip plops down on the ground and proceeds to try to fix her pants. 

‘This baby better be worth it.’ she thought.

when everyone from the organization fully supported itto’s decision and are willing to retire from the arataki organization as well to live their own lives, it was enough for the man to gain the confidence and freedom to propose you.

funny enough, you proposed to him at the same time as he, who was more than happy that you too want the same thing.

which led you both to where you are now, living in the countryside where itto gets to fulfill the last thing on his bucket list: raising cows and spending the rest of his life with his lover after your wedding.

itto as a househusband isn’t actually that bad, much to your relief.

i honestly see itto being at least decent at cleaning for the sake of taking care of his grandmother, so cooking and cleaning are nothing itto can’t handle. his ramens are to die for ! and the way he decorates his meals for you are… unique to say the least.

“why does it look like your food went on a war?” one of your colleagues would point out. it’s getting annoying to hear the same thing over and over, but it’s the thought that counts right? itto worked hard on it after all!

it’s not much but it’s honest work, you thought to yourself with a smile, taking a bite of your husband’s meal happily without any care as you remember how he often said that he’s the best person to make meals, especially the inazuma-kind.

meanwhile, your husband is suffering from laundry.

it’s his biggest enemy now, itto declared. their battles will be legendary!

it was legendary indeed.

“sunshine, why can’t this darn machine do anything?! i did everything you told me to and it didn’t do anything at all :((” he asks you, watching as you examine the washing machine with a pout.

“…itto, you forgot to plug in the machine.”

it was honestly endearing to see itto taking care of the animals of your farm, especially when it comes to the cows. just watching him interact with the cows as if they’re his gang made you grin.

“you should meet my spouse, they’re the most awesome person i’ve ever met!!” he exclaims to “ushi” with a toothy grin. “you’ll definitely like them, but don’t steal them away from me alright? i won’t forgive you >:((”

“moo.”

“that’s what i thought :DD”

“heyy susan, looking rad as always i see!” he greets one of the cows as he places down the buckets he was carrying all the way from the farmhouse. “if you can, could you let me have your milk?”

not only does he get along with cows, but he had also got along with many people who also live around the area - especially to kids.

you honestly don’t know how he does it, but he managed to let the whole village know him in just one week in a way that the city he resided in didn’t.

instead of feared comments and hushed whispers of how itto isn’t to be messed with, the people in the village would praise him as though he’s a kid that received a scholarship from a big private school.

“mister arataki is surely such a helpful man for old women like me and my dear friends,” an old woman said to you as the both of you stroll around the village. “you’re one lucky person. he’s a keeper!”

“ohh, you’re mister arataki’s spouse?” the sheriff asks when you visited the police station. “he’s alright, i’d say! he helped us out in looking for a thief that’s been lurking around the village. if it weren’t for him chasing after that fella, we would’ve not been able to catch him.”

kids would even sometimes visit your home just to hang out with itto and the animals. it’s honestly a relief to you that no one was against him or even scared of him.

shopping is also no problem for itto, except for the fact that there’s a possibility that he’ll come across to beans and get an allergy reaction - so you’re very much required to come with him in case that happens.

when it comes to spending time on his own while waiting for you, itto would usually explore around the village to help people when he can or busies himself with the animals in his farm after cleaning the entire house. although it’s fun, it didn’t mean that the ex-yakuza doesn’t miss you.

if need be, he’ll even video-chat with you! though, it’ll make him miss you more by the time the video-chat ends :(((

sometimes whenever you come home, you’d spot itto sitting by the porch of your farmhouse waiting for you as he plays his harmonica — wait he’s playing the harmonica with his nose?!

now that he’s living in the countryside with you, it’s rare for him to encounter anyone from yakuza organizations that he’s familiar of.

that is, unless a person is actually purposefully trying to find him.

there’s not one person from other organizations who wasn’t shocked when they find out that the leader of one of the most powerful yakuza organizations has retired so suddenly and so early. just what made this man retire without question?

kujou sara wanted to find this out herself.

despite claiming that she had no care about the retirement, the woman was honestly curious to know what made the ever so competitive man to suddenly quit. could there be an opponent that’ll come for her next and make her retire?

for someone who’s reckless, itto was surprisingly difficult to find. but not difficult enough to make it look like he vanished from the world, fortunately.

as soon as her underlings finally found the ex-yakuza’s hideout, sara did not hesitate to head out to her car and demand her driver to go to the location. she can deal with other matters later, she just wants to get rid of the burdening thoughts about a possible opponent!

she expected the hideout to be a luxurious building with itto staying in the penthouse just like any other yakuza bosses’ locations - but she never expected a… farmhouse?

“…are you sure we’re in the right location?” sara asks her driver, who stammers out a response.

“y-yes madam kujou. this is where the person you’re looking for is hiding - shall i bring out your weapon?”

before sara could reply, another voice was heard.

“…may i help you, ma’am?”

the woman looks at her side with her hand lying on top of her gun, ready to bring it out and shoot the opponent, only to see a person standing in front of her with a confused look.

“do you uh, live here?” she asks, her hand moving away from her gun once she realizes that you’re not a threat.

“yes, is there something wrong?”

before the woman could say anything else, she heard a sound of a door opening, followed by a very familiar voice.

“bugaboo is that you? did you come home early?”

no way. sara raises an eyebrow at the sight of her supposedly rival wearing a pink apron around his muscular body alongside a knitted sweater instead of the usual unfixed suit that showed off his “battle” scars.

he retired for this shit?

it didn’t take long before itto realizes that he has a visitor, eyes widening when he sees his rival standing by the entrance with a scary look on her face.

“oh kujou sara,” he greets, grinning. “i see you’ve come all this way to see me. did you finally admit to surrender and admit that i’m the number one yakuza boss of inazuma city?”

“did you really think i’d do that?” she asks, eyes narrowed. “i’m only here because i want an explanation from you, why the hell did you suddenly retire out of nowhere?”

the man looks unphased by her reason, still grinning. “that’s all? man, i expected something else.”

“just cut to the topic,” sara demands.

“alright alright! sheesh it was just a comment,” itto said, raising both his arms up in surrender. “i only retired because i want to spend time with my spouse, that’s all. there’s no other reason besides that.”

“…and?”

“what do you mean?”

“there’s no opponent? no serious matters? no running away from debts?” sara clarifies. there’s no way he’d give all of his hard work on the organization just to spend time with his lover!

“oh i’ve already settled with all of my debts alongside with those that are in debt from my organization, so everything’s alright for me to retire.” itto said with a shrug. “and no. i couldn’t possibly retire because of an opponent! that’s not what i’d do.”

“besides, i already like staying here with y/n so i have no reason to come back to the city besides checking in on my gang. i can’t just destroy my precious title as the number one househusband now, can’t i?”
