7. Your favorite kira?

Assuming this q means aside from my beloved bb Light, that would be Misa. I just love how unapologetic she is about murdering, I love how unabashedly she pursues the things she wants, I love how she doesn't give a shit as to whether Light means the things he says and long as he plays house with her nicely like a good dolly. I love how twisted and devoid she's become on the inside in the process of trying to run away from herself. She and Light both succeed in this; they have excised themselves from their bodies and live on as hollow facsimiles of the people they used to be. They are perfect for each other, in a way. The ideal toxic duo to rule over Light's new world.

I feel that Light really underestimated how essential Misa's willingness was to keeping his plans in check. Takada had too much self-respect for there to not be some conflict arising down the road, the same as which happened with Mikami. She was more emotionally mature and Light had to maintain the more difficult lie of something approaching authenticity with her. If Light wanted the perfect queen, it really only could have been Misa who filled those shoes to his expectations.

13. Favorite ships?

Classic Lawlight, who can resist the web of their toxicity? 😩 They really are two sides of the same coin. Very early on into my death note journey I came across this reddit post discussing the possible intentional coding of Light & L as sex symbols (in the anime, I believe). And while I don't agree with every point the op makes, I do find it interesting to consider how this coding affects our perception of their interactions, & intensifies the conflict between them in an eroticized way.

Second favorite would be Matsulight. The warehouse scene is just so, so soul-crushing for me, and I like to imagine what could happen if it was amplified to 1000. I talked about it extensively on this post, but to quote myself in summary:

It's just so heartbreaking to watch the one person who trusted Light entirely, fall apart under revelation of the truth. And cathartic too, to see the depth of Light's betrayal embodied in Matsuda's visceral rage. In a room full of grim and stone-faced people, Matsuda is the only one whose grief flows freely. Light was not in his right mind enough to realize it, but he died with the possibility of knowing that someone had cared about him enough to grieve him, and do so immensely.

(Also, I one of the first fics that I ever read for DN was Matsulight & it really compelled me. I went back to read it recently & I realized it was your fic. You did such an incredible job 😭. It's one of my all-time favorites!!!)

Third favorite, I've been getting into Misa/Takada lately. I feel like there's a lot of detestation & potential poisonous energy between them waiting to be explored. They are both such different entities, & interact with Light & the death note & their own internal selves in entirely different ways.

I LOVE the composition of this image. The way Light is in the foreground as the subject but frames Naomi as the centerpiece, with Ryuk and Raye lurking in the background... *chefs kiss* brilliant. Also love the grim reaper connotations with the scythe; Misa's accompanying grim reaper art is a close second for that reason too.

Sorry this took a while, my muse was being fickle…

But I hope you enjoy it

Benedict had stopped believing in fairytales when his father died but it didn’t stop him hoping that he would one day get to experience the love that his parents had shared but after his father died he figured that it would never happen for him. In the 10 years since his father died he’d not found anyone who even made feel even a small fragment of what he’d always been told it felt like.

But all that changed 9 months ago at his mother’s charity ball. He didn’t want to go, but there was not a lot that he would not do for his mother.

So he’d suited himself up and dragged himself along with the intention of only stopping for an hour and escaping but that changed not 30 minutes in when the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen in his life had walked in and everything he’d been told by his mother and his father about what love felt like…

He felt everything in that moment, the moment he looked into her beautiful green eyes he was a goner…

They’d danced, they’d flirted, fallen in love and kissed on the balcony but at midnight, as the clock chimed, she’d fled. He’d never even gotten her name but she’d changed his life and he spent the next 9 months searching for her.

He felt lost, more lost than he had ever felt in his life. He finally understood what his mother went through and this girl he was sure wasn’t dead, just gone from the face of the earth.

He looked everywhere, he was devastated at losing her. He fell into a pit of despair, he couldn’t work, his art was suffering because all he could paint and draw was her, trying to commit her to his memory or even paper to make sure that she was real.

If it wasn’t for the photographer that his mother had hired, catching a photo of her coming in and her running away he’d have thought he’d made the whole thing up.

Anthony and Kate had tried to help him find her, his mother had tried to help as well but as the woman didn’t seem to have an invite and no one remembered seeing her come in but she came in later than the rest of the guests.

For months Benedict went to his mother’s parties looking for her, he looked everywhere that he could think of.

But after 9 months he’d lost hope. London was a big place and easy to hide but he had been sure she’d felt the same connection, that she’d felt the same but it was just the idea of being discovered that made her flea and he had no idea why.

9 months of looking everywhere for what felt like a ghost and Henry had finally gotten fed up with Benedict's moping and not getting anywhere that he decided to drag his friend out.

He had been itching to go the Penwood’s new restaurant, he’d heard good things about the food and it was an open kitchen and he’d heard good things about the new chef and owner.

Benedict had not been convinced but he went anyway, he knew he had to start getting back out there, living his life again and stop looking for his mystery woman in silver.

Benedict had not been expecting it to change his life once again.

He and Henry had made their way into the packed restaurant and as he walked in, Benedict felt the same sensations all over again, the same sensations that he’d felt the night he’d met his mystery woman.

He looked around but he couldn’t see anyone that fit the description, so he had to wonder if he was just imagining things so he decided he was just going to enjoy his dinner.

His food was incredible, he’d enjoyed every bite of the food and it felt like a hug to his soul, his heart felt complete, it was a strange sensation. Each bite of food felt like he’d held his mystery woman in his arms, it had felt like that night.

Henry had been blown away by the food, they’d talked about it and he’d called one of the waitresses over and asked if they could pass their compliments onto the chef directly.

The waitress said she’d see but a few moments later she was coming back with a petite woman, and Benedict froze as he saw her.

His mouth fell open and he recognised her instantly and it looked like from the way she froze, that she knew it was him. “This is Chef Sophie, our owner” the waitress said

“I…” he stammered.

“The food was incredible Chef, honestly, this was the most incredible meal i’ve ever eaten. It felt like you were able to fill my soul… Benedict said it was like a dream!”

“I…” he stammered again

“It… it’s okay, i’m glad you liked the food. It’s…” the blonde replied nervously.

“It’s you…” Benedict finally stuttered “I’ve… I've been looking for you for the last 9 months!”

Henry nearly dropped his glass of wine he was just about to take a drink from “w…what? She…”

“I should go… i’ve got…” she replied before not finishing her sentence and running back to the kitchen.

Benedict wanted to go after her but at the same time he didn’t want to cause a scene. This was her restaurant and he didn’t want to be thrown out by security.

Henry looked at him in shock at the revelation that the chef was the woman from the party.

“This… this is just…” Benedict said, shaking his head in shock as the waitress came back a few moments later whilst Benedict had been explaining to Henry what had happened and how he was sure that Sophie was the woman from the party.

The waitress looked around before coming closer to the table “excuse me… sir?”

“Yes?” Benedict said as he looked at her

“I just… Sophie will kill me for this but she’s my step-sister and I can’t let this go because she told me about that party and meeting you, not that she realised it was you at the time but she finishes at midnight, the restaurant closes at 11 and she’ll finish cleaning but she’ll be done at midnight if you want to talk to her. I am sure she’ll listen to you if you wait for her… It’s not my place to explain what happened or why she left but… just… i thought you should know” she said with a shy smile before putting the bill on the table and dashing back off to deal with another customer.

Henry looked at him “are you going to wait for her?”

“I have to, Hen, I can't let her get away again. We had a connection. There was something there that… I don’t know… I am sure she felt too… but if she didn’t… then it will at least give me some closure and I can try and move on with my life…”

And that was how Benedict found himself waiting outside Penwood's just before midnight, hoping that the waitress wasn’t trying to humiliate him.

He felt sick as he waited, watching the lights go out in the restaurant and the door open and Sophie appearing with the redheaded girl who had been their waitress.

“Hi…” Sophie said a little shyly “Posy told me she'd told you to come… I wasn’t sure if you would or not…”

“Well, I wasn’t sure if it was all some sort of sick joke or not… but I had to try and at least see” Benedict said

“I’ll leave you two to talk… Hugh is just there, text me when you get home” she said giving her step-sister a hug as she nodded

“Walk with me?” Sophie said “i’m just around the corner anyway…”

“Oh right… sure” Benedict said following her.

They walked in silence for a bit before Sophie was the one who finally broke it “I guess I owe you an explanation as to why i just… fled…”

“It would be nice… you just disappeared off the face of the earth, we couldn’t trace your invite…”

“That would be because my step-mother stole my invite and my friend helped me get in on hers” Sophie said “and I had to get back before my step-mother did otherwise i’d have been in trouble…”

“But you’re an adult…?” he said to her looking confused.

“That may be the case but until about 8 months ago when my father’s will was located I was basically her slave… she had me in the restaurants at stupid hours doing all the cleaning and the prep…” Sophie explained

“But you… you could have reached out, I mean you knew who I was”

“I know but Benedict… you’re a Bridgerton. I’m basically a bastard. My father met my mother when she was a waitress at Penwood’s when his father owned it. He didn’t know about me til I was 3 when my mother died… he raised me since then but when he died when I was 15 Araminta was left in charge of me… his will had never been found. A man like you… doesn’t belong with someone like me who has no qualifications and at the time had no money, no future…” Sophie said sadly

“That wasn’t for you to decide… but Sophie, you could have reached out after… when it was found, when it was sorted. I’ve been looking for you for 9 months…” Benedict said, sounding hurt.

Sophie sighed “I was scared I’ve always been made feel like I am burden, like no one wants me… i was worried that if i reached out, you’d see who I was and not want me and I wanted that one magical night, that night that was like a dream come true, to be a happy memory, to be the highlight of my life… and then tonight… I saw you again… I felt you walking in and saw you walking across my restaurant…”

“I thought I felt you too… that tingle… magic almost…” He said “i’d promised Henry that I’d get out, that i’d try and get myself back to normal, to try and forget you and then I walk into your restaurant, of all the restaurants in London… I’ve been desperate to come since you opened 6 months ago but something was holding me back…”

“I didn’t actually start working as a Chef proper until this week, I was working behind the scenes getting it up and running, I wanted to bring it back to it’s former glory like it was under my father and it’s took a while… but it… it’s like everything has just fallen into place…” Sophie said with a shy smile.

“Look, I know this is out there but you just said you felt it too… there's clearly something between us… I don’t give two shits about your past, I don’t. You’re incredible and you make me feel things I've never felt before and I don’t care that Chef’s hours suck. I’m an artist, I can work whenever… but there is something between us… I would like… if you’d allow me to… to take you out… to maybe go on a proper date, get to know one another better… see where this takes us?” he asked hopefully.

Sophie smiled at him, “i’d like that… but if you want… you can come in for a coffee? We can talk some more?”

“I’d like that” Benedict said as he waited for her to unlock the door, feeling like finally, everything he’d been waiting for, everything he’d ever wanted in life was right in front of him.

And from that night… they were never apart, they moved in together within 2 months of getting reacquainted and were engaged to be married within 6 months.

It was A Real Dream Come True.

Weren’t they supposed to have just been taking shelter from the rain in a museum and looking at some erot*c paintings while they were at it? Why…did they enter the world inside a painting?!

Mu Yiran: Every single one of us is acting out a role in the painting.

Ke Xun’s eyes lit up: How do we get into an erot*c painting?

Mu Yiran gave him a long, drawn-out look: Shut your eyes and lie down.

Novel[translated]

Comments **contains spoilers**:

One day, Ke Xun and his bestie Wei Dong entered an art exhibition to avoid the rain. Instead, they found themselves transported into one of the paintings, kickstarting their journey of going through multiple paintings in different art exhibitions. Their goal? To survive the paintings, find the artist’s signature/seal, and solve the larger mystery of why this is happening.

And maybe, have time for some romance in between.

This novel reminded me a lot of Kaleidoscope of Death, in terms of the level of horror, humor, mechanics (e.g. people who died in the paintings would also die soon thereafter in the real world for unknown reasons), and the main character’s personality (i.e. shameless Ke Xun vs shameless Ruan Nanzhu lol). Even the ending style, with the what-the-fuck-ery, is very reminiscent. So if you like KOD, chances are, you’ll also enjoy POT.

Highlights:

Each painting has a complex worldbuilding with a message behind it. The painting that fascinates me most is probably the “Animal World”, where humans and livestocks exchanged their roles. It seems like a criticism about industrial farming and some of the inhumane practices in the industry (Ironically, this might be one of the reasons - per rumors - the novel is no longer hosted on jjwxc, on account that it depicts and possibly criticizes certain aspects of China, especially in regards to homophobia). But even more impressive is how the author ties together all the different paintings and their hints at the end. Hence the latter part of the novel is heavily invested in mystery-solving with a lot of big brain moments.

I’ll say the horror element in this story is top-tier. Not just in the spooky scary way, but in a dystopian way. Just *chef kiss*

One thing I do find refreshing about this novel is that there is an explanation for why certain characters are so good at surviving. In a lot of infinite flow novels, the stories are structured in a way that the protagonist and his few selected friends are often incredibly lucky and/or incredibly smart in every subject - even though they are sometimes just normal students. But POT provides a reason: that is, the characters have been specifically selected by a higher force so that their specialty can ensure their survival (e.g. a doctor being selected for a painting requiring medical knowledge).

Some of the side characters are fun - such as Wei Dong and ‘carrot’, who provided nice comic relief. I also like Fang Fei, one of the few surviving female characters in the story. Also, love the Dong Fang pairing, they are quite cute together.

The ending is a wild ride. I love the mix of science and history behind the Shan Hai painting. That said, there are some parts that are just pure information dump and can make for difficulty understanding.

Things I don’t like

Even though I said that every character was selected for their specialty, it still doesn’t hide the fact that ML is too OP. He is an art collector and has some knowledge of the paintings, but he also possessed knowledge beyond his realm of expertise, even going so far as to be able to acquire weaponry…I’ll say he is the standard stoic gong that doesn’t inspire a lot of interest as a character.

Female characters - As with a lot of infinite flow danmeis (and danmei in general), female characters get shunned and disposed of easily…But for some reason this novel just rubs me off even more than the rest. I think it has to do with the fact that a lot of the female characters are quite competent, but they were casted in a bad light, in comparison to male characters that had similar qualities. E.g. Sha Liu - she was actually really knowledgeable and while her interpretation of the clues weren’t completely correct, the main characters seemed unfairly critical to her explanations and didn’t even care if she died??? Basically, until the latter ⅓ of the story, you can bet that most female characters are getting axed, and those that get left (with the exception of Fang Fei), are just seemingly there for narrative convenience.

Okay, back in May @isolatedphenomenon asked me if I had an les mis fic recs and I went "oh boy do I !" and then promptly fucked off and disappeared from tumblr for like 6 months...

Anyway on the off chance people are interested, here is my vastly too long list of my favourite les mis fanfic (that I'm almost 100% sure I'll have accidentally missed some of my favourites off of...)

The vast majority of these are main pairing Enjolras/Grantaire, so I've put those first, divided into multi-chaptered and then one-shots. Below that will be other pairings!

Multi-chaptered

• Witch Boy Series : magic AU, starting with Grantaire solving Enjolras' curse - this is just Incredible world building which gets better as it goes on - my favourite is the Babet interlude

• World Ain't Ready : you know how fandoms tend to have a fic that is just associated with it ? in my experience, for les mis this is it - and well deserved ! High school, fake dating AU with some of the most engaging writing

• BE : Enjolras is dragged back into theatre production, helping Eponine put on a production of Hamlet - really love the characterisation in this, and this is really one of those modern AUs that actually feels like real life - really good writing

• After the End : the definitive apocalypse AU in my eyes - les amis are an underground resistance to the dystopian government - really wonderful characterisation of Grantaire and the amis

• You never have to wonder; you never have to ask. : I tend to find fic by scrolling through bookmarks of a pairing, which means I often see repeats; this is a fic that if I see I just re-read cause I know I'll enjoy it - the amis sparked a failed rebellion, and now 18 months later Grantaire ends up staying at Enjolras' after returning to Paris for Marius and Cosette's wedding

• Your Heart on Your Skin : Soulmate AU with flower tattoos marking important emotions and events - wonderful concept and world building

• Impatient to Be Free : Daughters of Bilitis AU - if that doesn't make you excited I don't know what else to say to convince you (aside from saying the author is a simply wonderful writer)

• You Dance Dreams : Okay. Not to be over dramatic, but this fic did genuinely qualitatively change my life, in that it was the first thing that got me looking up contemporary ballet and now that's like one of my favourite things and big hobby So. Also its really great writing; music/creative arts school les amis with Grantaire choreohraphing the ballet for Combeferre's opera, with a heavy emphasis on Grantaire realising he really never actually got over Enjolras

• philia : this one is an absolute classic to me, but not given nearly enough recognition - one of the more realistic college AUs ever written, and the writing of Grantaire is so good because it hits the perfect balance of sympathy and annoyance about his behaviour (that's a genuine compliment)

• Coffee Hooligans : fucking tragedy this never got properly finished, Enjolras leads the amis as social justice vigilantes and tries to hide the criminal bits of his life from R

• Fighting the Hurricane : Pacific Rim AU that's less an AU and more just placing the les mis characters in the Pacific Rim universe. Really good and riveting read, also super interesting depiction of Grantaire

• Weaving Olden Dances : Fairy AU - Grantaire "claims" Enjolras to prevent his execution - really good writing, love Grantaires characterisation

• Paris Burning : canon era (sort of) where cities have a physical being - Grantaire is Paris and becomes entangled in Enjolras' revolution - oh the world building is truly *chefs kiss*

• Euphoria is You For Me : Enjolras and Grantaire keep meet cuting in a wonderfully written Brooklyn - feels like a love letter to Brooklyn at times, and I really like the characterisation of Grantaire

• so please just fall in love with me this christmas : Enjolras works for the environmental company Grantaire volunteers at, and keeps getting secret gifts at Christmas - I sound a little like a broken record but the Grantaire characterisation is very good

• You Are the Moon : Wild West esque Space AU - Grantaire has to call on the amis to help rescue Valjean and Cosette, despite Grantaire leaving the amis 6 months before. On re-reading the Enjolras characterisation feels a little rushed, but overall fantastic story telling and the Grantaire arc is a Delight

• Pandemos : Enjolras is aphrodite, and seeks peace from all his suitors in R/Hephestus' cave

• Pining for You : Hallmark christmas romance - Grantaire returns home to work on his father's tree farm, and Enjolras is the lawyer helping prevent the farm being sold - cute as shit imo

• Once We're Kings : Fantasy AU - a country hosts a ball to marry Prince Enjolras and the rival country sends Grantaire as a fuck you - one of the best ways of doing Enjolras as a prince in a fantasy and just really nicely written

• Never Bitter and All Delicious : Fairy Godmother AU - yes really, yes its genuinely a very good read

• On One Condition : Fantasy AU - Enjolras is a bored knight who finally goes to check out the local dragon, which turns out to be Grantaire - I really like how they capture Enjolras' stubborn nature and it's such a well written soft growth of love between them

• That's How Easy Love Can Be : Les Amis work at a primary school; and its secret santa time! very fun portrayal of Enjolras

• The Lark and Her Lieutenants : re write of canon where Cosette is the leader of the revolution - just *chefs kiss*

• If You Tickle Us, Do We Not Laugh : Grantaire is Enjolras' secret android - really good at writing a relationship that's incredibly loving but just keeps being antagonistic and coming off wrong

One Shots

• True Colours : AU where you leave colours on the people important to you - Enjolras and Grantaire falling for each other is so soft and gently written its lovely, this is genuinely one of my favourites

• Keep It Kind, Keep It Good, Keep It Right : this one is so good to me, because it builds off my pet hatred of everyone assuming Enjolras doesn't care about (or at least actively show he cares about) his friends

• blooming : very soft post-dystopian utopia that has just a really wonderful sense of hope and light to me

• and the wall leaned away (or: The Pros and Cons of Tilling) : perfectly realised characterizations of the amis, Grantaire needs a date to her final year art exhibition - deals with anxiety over protest in a way that actually hits for me

• not just one of the crowd : R helps run a leftist bakery and bike repair shop - very cute characterisation, and I think more les mis fanfic should link to anarchist essays

• Lovesickness : Enjolras is an idiot and thinks he's sick rather than having a crush - the writing of Joly and Combeferre in this is some of my favourite depictions of these two

• If there's a rocket, tie me to it : absolutely heartbreaking sci-fi AU about the amis as doomed mecha pilots

• Where I Fall is Where I Land : Enjolras is a Roman commander as Rome's power is leaving England, and then meets the pict Grantaire (+ fun soulmark stuff !)

• You Started Foreign to Me : Enjolras moves to america and R is the overnight grocery clerk who helps her learn Spanish - cute fluffy lesbians with a wonderfully written driven Enjolras

• Love Is Touching Souls : very cute soulmate AU - and one I really love for really truly considering the implications of soul marks and creating historical lore around it

• Ten Years : R is a musician, and it non-linearly charts his relationship to Enj from high school to 10 years later

• put up with me then I'll make you see : Grantaire lives above Enjolras, and its christmas - I find it to have a very fun interpretation of pining Enjolras

• A Cat Called Trash Can : this was one of the first les mis fics I ever read (yes I know it says it was published in 2020, but I think it has to be a re-upload or something?) and it does still have a special place in my heart - Grantaire rescues a cat, but Enjolras is the only one with an apartment free to look after it

• Still I'm Begging to Be Free : inception AU where les amis have to rescue a sleeping R from his own brain

•I'm in it for You : cw: illness, cancer - R has cancer and is being a martyr about telling his friends so Enjolras drives him back from chemo

• walls come tumbling down : sky high au - a very good high school AU with the perfect level of campy superhero powers

• This brave new world's not like yesterday : Enjolras needs a job, so ends up working in a bowling alley with Grantaire and bonding

Enjolras/Grantaire/Combeferre

• In Defiance of All Geometry : les amis are a student co-op house, Enjolras and Combeferre are pining friends and Grantaire is the newbie

• Still the Same : this is very good writing and very compelling - if you can get over the (imo) plot hole of Enjolras working for the FBI. R was an art thief Enj put away and is briefly helping the FBI out, and Combeferre is Enjolras' husband

• To Kingdom Come : cw: war and PTSD from that, Enjolras and Combeferre are part of a group of refugees that have crossed into a more fantasy land, and Grantaire is a lone traveller from that land that attempts to help - that was a shit summary of this very emotional, wonderfully written fic about war and love in all forms

• Gonna need (a spark to ignite) : I always love a twist on a classic trope, and this is a very fun take on the soulmate AU - Enjolras loses feeling in his soul mark as a child, falls in love with Grantaire and then his soulmate, Combeferre, turns up

Eponine/Cosette

• Pretty Girls Don't Know the Things That I Know : simply stunning writing - perfect example of soft writing about a harsh world

• she knows her way around : Eponine and Cosette bond, ostensibly so Eponine can find out about her for Marius, and their interactions are so playful and realistic, its wonderful

• always find me floating on oceans : Cosette stows away on Eponine's pirate ship - I do always have a soft spot for eposette fics (not just cause I ship it) because they truly characterise Cosette in a really considered and interesting way

• There's No Making Love : I'm putting this under eposette even though there is some significant enjolras/grantaire content, because the Cosette characterisation is so fun and cute

• round and round again : this fic really beautifully translates Cosette's bad childhood and then isolated teenage years, and the impact that would have on her as an adult into a modern AU

• Underwater Thunderheards : this is based off the book The Scorpio Races, and is just a really nice short fic about longing

• How To Change The World Without Taking Power : Marius has a crush on Cosette and she's tried being polite and subtle in turning him down, so just ends up fake dating Eponine instead

• blood red fruit and poison's kiss : Snow White AU - Cosette as Snow White

• The Winters Cannot Fade Her : Snow White Au 2.0 - Eponine as Snow White - this was written as a pair to the one above which is just so cute to me

• marriage à la mode : Cosette and Eponine run a bridal shop together and it's very cute !

• Temporary Hold : I personally find this a really fun and very unique take on Cosette - with exams coming up she decides she needs to get laid on the reg and so hits up Eponine to act as if they're already long term girlfriends

Combeferre/Courfeyrac

• better than you had it : fake dating but kick it up an emotional notch - Courf and Ferre pretend to still be together after breaking up for a family event

• take flight, come near : nice and cute low fantasy, where Combeferre runs a dragon sanctuary and Courf finds an injured dragon

Rare Pairs

• The Future's Owned by You and Me : cute Enjolras/Feuilly with actual radical politics and real life organising difficulties and wins

• First Dates and Other Dangers : Combeferre and Grantaire agree to go on a blind date and it's awkward until it isn't - just cute !

• after midnight : Combeferre has insomnia and meets Grantaire in various all night fast food chains

• as you are : Bahorel and Jehan getting ready together

• Almost Romantic : Jehan works at a museum, and takes Combeferre on a little tour

• Understudy : Jehan/Combeferre, with Combeferre's insecurities regarding being seen as second best to Enjolras

• Here There Be Dragons : Courf/Enj/Ferre - Courf and Enj are superheroes and Ferre is the doctor that patches them up

• To Let it Occur (Laisser Faire la Nature) : Feuilly has a stupidly long stopover in Paris and meets Enjolras

anon ! sorry this has taken me so long to answer. but get ready for a ton of fic recs because i love talking about my favorite pieces

1. enouement (jeonghan) by @chanhao-s -- if i had to pick one fic on tumblr, this is the one i’d pick. this piece is probably my favorite fic on all of tumblr, and not one of my favorites, but my favorite, and i don’t say that about anything in life. it’s an absolute must read. the world, the characters, the plot, the descriptions, the progression -- it’s all to die for. the concept itself is so amazing, and the characters feel so real and so flawed. both jeonghan and mc in this have their own sort of redemption arc and it’s just so beautifully done. i rec this fic to everyone because i love it dearly. i have no other words, just everyone go read this fic!!

2. almost (mingyu) by @yoontothemoon -- this fic is another one that i rec to everyone because i love it so much ! op’s writing is to die for, the way they describe emotions and feelings and atmosphere sets such a special tone and immediately pulls you in. the writing style and descriptors are so unique and creative they make my heart jump. i’ve never read a fic quite like this one, so i find myself coming back to it routinely. again there’s no way i can articulate the love i have for this fic; another must read!!

3. this ocean is yours, (chan) by @swyllh -- honestly all of sara’s writing is my favorite, such a criminally underrated writer, the way they use description and dialogue to set tone and establish setting completely kills me. sara’s writing inspires me so much. specifically why i love this fic is because its an apocalyptic setting but at the same time it sort of doesn’t feel that way. the entire fic relies on the circumstances of that world and yet the impending doom almost feels skirted around. (i don’t think any of that made sense, but it’s really an amazing fic). also the fic has this open ending that changed the whole way i looked at writing endings (like i said sara’s writing is a huge inspiration to me). and also the use of the questionnaire and the bucket list of sorts is so incredibly creative and it just blew my mind the first time i read this fic.

4. overrated (jeonghan) by @lxveille -- another writer on here whose entire mlist is perfection. veille has a ton of fics that i adore (like that one minghao apocalypse fic or the jeonghan idol-verse piece) but something about the fic i mentioned absolutely stole my heart the first time i read it. it’s! so! amazing!! to begin with the dystopia world that’s established in this fic is just *chefs kiss*. but also, the progression of the relationship and subtlety in the writing just makes my heart go crazy. i adore this fic. and the use of the words and their definitions as line breakers is so masterful, an absolute work of art. the words she chose to use and how she twisted their meanings to fit the circumstances and fit the characters... it obliterates me. again i have no words to describe how much i love this fic, one of my absolute favorites.

5. the darkest shade of blue (jeonghan) by @minghaoss -- where do i begin with this fic, the way eros wrote this piece made my jaw drop the first time i read it (and the second and third time too) its almost like she had me in mind while writing cause i swear it’s like it’s been catered towards my specific taste. my heart feels like it’s sinking just thinking about this fic. the repetition, the structure, the motifs -- all of it has me on the floor in tears. its such a wonderfully written piece, reads like poetry too, oof i just love it!

6. the morning after (jeonghan) by @dinoshaur -- this fic somehow always surprises me every single time i reread it which is unsurprisingly quite often. sha’s writing here is just so tasteful, and it makes me remember what an amazing writer sha is. the entire concept isn’t necessarily one that’s new or unique, but the way it’s written makes it feel like something never seen before and something undiscovered. jeonghan and mc’s dynamic and their dialogue is so entrancing and it makes me so soft for them. another truly wonderful piece!!

note: i apologize that these are all basically jeonghan fics but i have a major soft spot for him in fics, honestly it’s probably half the reason he’s one of my biases now lol

RWBY Volume 8, Chapter 1 Thoughts and Opinions

HELLO, INTERWEBS!!! At long last, we are back with more RWBY, and with it, more RWBY Thoughts and Opinions! After the absolute roller coaster that was Volume 7's cliffhanger finale, I can not imagine the insanity that awaits us this Volume. So, without further ado, here are my various thoughts and opinions on Chapter 1 of RWBY Volume 8, "Divide"

SPOILERS BELOW:

Hmm, starting off with a mysterious woman scrubbing floors, and...wait, is that...no...

I really like the way they juxtapose Cinder scrubbing with her scratching the chair. Very symbolic.

Yick, something about organic architecture just gives me the willies. I mean, is the whale aware that they double as a building complex? Can they feel the diabolical ongoings of it's rib cage? Creepy stuff.

Oof, outright taking credit for grabbing the relic, Cinder? Yeah, no way that's going to bite you in the ass.

Oh my. Mercury, Emerald, AND Hazel have new looks this season. I'm sure I'll warm up to them eventually, but right now Emerald's and Hazel's aren't really doing this. For Hazel, the outfit is all right, but the hair is a bit boring compared to his originals. Mercury's is ok, but is it just me, or is he basically wearing Yang's V4-6 outfit? I mean, it works, but still.

"Without you, I am nothing." That...didn't sound like the first time she's said that. It almost sounds like something Salem's drilled into her head for years. Cinder may be irredeemable in my opinion, but I do love a good tragic backstory.

You know, I guess would make sense for the crater to be the slums area. Can't imagine living directly under a floating landmass would be considered prime real estate.

Ooh, this old man has badger paws. I don't think we've seen that kind of Faunus trait yet.

D'aaww, Nora gave Oscar a soft hug rather than her usual glomp. So cute ^-^

I'm interested in how Oscar not telling them about Oz is going to play out.

Ok, their is a lot going on in this bar-base worth talking about, but for some reason I am fascinated by the picture of (i'm assuming) the founders in the background. What interesting designs they have. I feel like they have a story, and I would like to hear it.

Penny's dejected demeanor is giving me all of the feels Q_Q

Not sure how I feel about the rift forming between RWBYJNRO, though I guess we'll have to see where it goes. At least we have people like Jaune playing mediator.

I will say, though, I look forward to seeing Ren and Nora apart. As much as I love them as a couple, I'd very much like to see them operate as individuals.

God, Ironwood trying to manipulate Penny like that.

And there it is. Ironwood has truly revealed his true feelings, and his motivation for his attempt to launch Atlas. He isn't making a tactical retreat in order to form a new plan altogether. He's abandoning the fight altogether, leaving Remnant to die so that he and Atlas can live. It's funny, he wanted to avoid becoming Lionheart, but he was a coward too.

"Everything that follows will be on your hands". That motherf-

You know, we don't see a lot of corpses on this show, do we? Penny got better, Amber's screentime ended as she died, Roman got eaten, Pyrrha got an express viking funeral, etc, and a lot of others were only corpses for seconds before we never saw them again. They did a good job selling how proper dead Clover is here.

Ok, I don't know squat about Hospital layouts. Is it normal to have the morgue right outside of an emergency room? I mean, I guess it saves some travel time should things go wrong, but still, seems like a great anxiety generator for the patient, especially with both rooms having windows. "That's where I'll be going next."

I like the new metal arm. The fact that you can see all of the internal stuff makes it feel like it was quickly put together for the sake of urgency, while still looking cool.

Man, that rendition of "Hero" in the background. Chilling.

Is Winter getting a new look already? I must say. I like the look of the braces, and the ponytail is a vast improvement over the bun.

JESUS H CHRIST IRONWOOD!!! I THOUGHT HE WAS GOING OUT THERE TO ARREST THEM!!! THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A PRETTY BIG FASCIST MOVE, RIGHT!? HE JUST SHOT CHAD JAMES IN THE FACE!!!

What really interests me is everyone's reactions. Elm and Marrow are incredibly shocked, Harriet and Winter share their little look of doubt, and then there's Vine who just...doesn't react at all. Either that or it's all in his eyes, which we can't really see from here. Either way, not a huge reaction from him. Methinks the Ace-Ops and Winter might be starting to doubt the horse they bet on.

I find it interesting that Salem doesn't know how the Relic works, but then I suppose it makes sense, seeing as Oz probably placed them into the vaults almost immediately after finding them, so this is probably the first time she's even seen one in person..

Ok, OP time, and buckle up, guys, gals, and nonbinary pals, because this one is going to be a doozy.

-First off, the song sounds pretty good, but it seems like it's going to go through the same cycle as the rest where it doesn't do too much for me at first, but has me headbanging like a metalhead by the end of the volume

- Mantle glitching out between peaceful and wartorn is a wonderful effect. Definitely fills you with a sense of dread.

-The individual shots of Team RWBY are absolutely gorgeous. Conceptually, it's the standard "where we started and where we're at", but the composition is worthy of a chef's kiss. I think I've found my new wallpaper.

-The Ace-Ops appearing on Clover's pin is nice, but what I find interesting is Harriet and Qrow appearing back to back, especially with Harriet looking so angry. Is Harriet going to double down on her loyalty to Ironwood and go after Qrow?

- It seems Robyn is going to be Qrow's main source of support this season, though the bars seem to suggest they might be in custody for a while.

-Oscar seems to be in Salem's stronghold, which doesn't bode well for our farmboy, also, WHY DOES SALEM HAVE DEMON WINGS!? Emerald's Volume 5 illusion wasn't this scary looking!

-I feel like their's symbolism showing Team RWBY's weapons paired together like that, but I feel like it's too early to say what of. Looks pretty, though

-Ren and Nora standing so far apart. It hurts my soul! Interesting how, while Ren looks away, Nora actually turns towards him.

-I didn't notice Winter's change of expression/outfit before passing by Weiss. She went from looking confident and slightly condescending to full with doubt.

-Not a lot to say about the quick shots of Whitley and Willow other then the fact that they both look worried. The image of the Schnee Snowflake shattering, however, is VERY interesting.

-I'm always a sucker for some good ol' chess symbolism. I find it interesting that while Salem's pieces dissolve into creatures of Grimm, Ironwood's simply dissolve, leaving him alone. Perhaps shooting a fellow councilman in the face right in front of his inner circle doesn't play out as well for him as well as he thought it would.

- Speaking of the classics, also gotta love me some reflection artwork. Watts seems to be working behind Pietro's back while Pietro (presumably) works to get Amity running, while secretly worrying about Penny, whose reflection cracks, possibly symbolizing her resolve. I worry for her.

- The snowflake turning into a flower petal in Ren's hand, while a similar petal passes Nora by. I don't know what this means, but I'm intrigued.

- It seems Ruby and Yang won't be completely be at odds, judging by the look they give each other before going into the action shot.

- Hmm, while Cinder pulls a Za Warudo on the fight scene, you can see a dejected Emerald and a pissed off Neo, still moving, among the heroes. Interesting...

-Almost as interesting as Cinder grasping her Grimm arm before being engulfed in flames. Perhaps Salem pulled a Wormtail's Silver Hand with that arm.

-Is this the first time we've seen the Staff of Creation in it's entirety? I remember wanting to include it and the Lamp in my RWBY Vol 7 spritesheet, but couldn't find any images of it's bottom half. I like the little jewel on the bottom.

-Wow, CRWBY went full Kingdom Hearts with the heroes falling through the ice, and I absolutely LOVE IT! This op has some of the most gorgeous visuals the series has ever seen.

-HAPPY EVER AFTER HAPPY? NEVER AGAIN Daaaaaaamn, that's awesome. It kind of reminds me of a line from Red Like Roses Part II, "This bedtime story ends with Misery Ever After". It's incredibly haunting.

-Almost as haunting as the sketchy art style that flashes in between the words, particularly the part that shows Penny's eyes going red before the rest of her does. Did we predict Watts hacking Penny a volume too early?

-The final shot of Crescent Rose alone stuck in the snow. Damn. The theme of this op seems to be "foreboding as all hell"

Damn. Damn! DAMN! This was, without question, the best OP RWBY has ever had. By, like, a lot. The visuals were some of the best the show has ever had to offer, the foreboding is through the roof, and the symbolism is incredibly clever. I don't envy them when it comes time to make Volume 9's, because this will be a very tough act to beat. I am so happy to have RWBY back, and I am both excited and terrified to see what this show is going to do next.
