Ethan and Lyra's surnames in my headcanons come from their canon names in Japanese (Hibiki and Kotone.)

Elio and Selene are originally from the Kanto region before moving to Alola. Their surnames mean "sun" and "night" respectively.

Nate's surname comes from the English name of his manga counterpart.

In an instant classic Charlotte Flair defeated Cali Kink to be the NEW World Queen Champion.

Madam Secretary Review-Shutdown

I have been loving this season of Madam Secretary, and the episodes just keep getting better and better. This episode was great in terms of both the more personal plots for the main characters, as well as the storyline revolving around the government shutdown. The relationships that Elizabeth has with her colleagues continues to create so many interesting dynamics on this show, and I am looking forward to Jay in his new role as chief of staff. 

On the Mend

Dmitri is one of my favourite characters on this show, so I love that he’s getting the support he needs at the treatment centre. Not only that, he’s starting to realise that his treatment isn’t just about him fixing himself, but requires the support of others as well. In this vein, it’s clear how happy he is that Henry came to see him, so as soon as Henry asks for his help it becomes obvious that Henry only showed up due to work, and that hurts. Dmitri only has his sister, so it’s understandable that on some level he’s come to rely on and care for Henry, so when Henry shows up merely for work purposes, it appears to hurt him a great deal. 

Personal Issues

I must admit that regarding the argument between Elizabeth and Henry over Dmitri and Jason, I am siding with Elizabeth. Certainly Elizabeth knows that sometimes she has to miss out on family things because of her job, and that Henry’s new job also requires this of him. However, I felt that Elizabeth was simply tracing a trend of Henry’s in that he has so much guilt over everything that has happened to Dmitri that he is ready and willing to drop anything for him. Although that was not necessarily the case in this episode, the guilt has clearly been affecting him for a long time, and Elizabeth is merely reacting to Henry’s actions because of this guilt. Henry also gets immediately defensive and angry over anything regarding Dmitri, which certainly doesn’t help matters. At the same time however, the two of them work out their issues and demonstrate what a good and healthy fictional relationship looks like. 

It’s been obvious for a while now that Stevie and Jareth were eventually going to fall apart, and now it appears to be particularly close. After all, Stevie has already seemed to realise that her relationship with Jareth is nothing like her parents’. There’s also Jareth’s family standing in their way due to not liking her, and understandably she doesn’t want to go to England because of this, but Jareth pushes her. Given that she so easily chooses work over him in the end, even when she has a choice, indicates that they aren’t going to last. However, this isn’t an impulsive decision merely motivated by her desire to not go to England. Her relationship has been in the back of her mind for a while now, that they aren’t working out. 

Something Missing

On reading the resumes of people to possibly fill in for Nadine as chief of staff, Elizabeth feels like something is missing, although she’s not sure what. From an audience perspective, I think it’s clear that she’d come to not only depend on Nadine, but also trust and respect her, and that’s something for wants for her next chief of staff. The people sending in their resumes are just pieces of paper to her, and that’s why the epiphany that Jay should take the job fits so well. I can’t wait to see Jay taking on his new role. It’s significant because it demonstrates just how much Elizabeth respects and trusts Jay, and that she appreciates his loyalty. But, it’s just as important that Jay puts his foot down regarding work, that he needs to spend time with his daughter, and Elizabeth is the perfect person to understand. Even though she was obviously not in the same place as Jay now is, she knows the importance of needing to work it out, and has already demonstrated her willingness to make things easier on Jay-such as when she told him to bring his daughter in to work and says that they’ll work it out. It’s so great to see how ecstatic both Elizabeth and Blake are over Jay taking on his new position, and I can’t wait for the next episode!

Strong Arming

There’s not much I love more on Madam Secretary than when Elizabeth and Russell team up, precisely because so often they are antagonistic towards each other, whilst also having very different methods, and this is certainly explicit throughout this episode. Whilst Russell’s first move is to go dirty, fighting Senator Morejon with personal information on his wife, Elizabeth interrupts his plans, attempting to find a more peaceful, perhaps more ethical solution. Though Elizabeth must be applauded for these ethics, I completely understand where Russell is coming from. Although his method is a bit dirty, it has the added benefit of being much more effective in both the short and long term. Elizabeth’s goal was to merely end the shutdown, whilst Russell has a different goal in mind-to eliminate an enemy immediately, and chances are Morejon is going to prove to be much more difficult in the future. 

There’s always a great dynamic between Elizabeth and Russell, because though they don’t often agree with the other’s methods, there’s a lot of healthy respect for each other. This is evident when Russell shows up at Elizabeth’s house and they both half-heartedly have it out at each other, before becoming much more civil. Not only that, Russell implies that in the future he might ask her to run for office (and to be honest I would love watching the two of them work much more closely together in this scenario). Not to mention, Russell has Elizabeth essentially go on campaign throughout this episode precisely because she has high approval ratings, something he must definitely be considering at this point. At the same time, Elizabeth’s style isn’t always so far removed from Russell’s-after all, Morejon accused her of strong arming foreign despots, which she definitely does for a good cause, and this is certainly a talent that Russell appreciates.
