https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H402HL39LKE Gordon had woken up from a bad dream. He was having a difficult time getting back to sleep. Eventually the big engine gave up and decided to stay awake for a while. He glanced around to see if any of the other engines, or Cleo were awake, but everyone was fast asleep. Gordon then checked the hammock next to him, wanting to check on Romeo. To his shock, the hammock was empty. Gordon felt a pang of panic as he realized Romeo was gone. With no driver, Gordon was unable to move. The big engine was about to wake up the others when he spotted a faint glow of light coming from outside the side shed window. A figure stood back facing the window, it was Romeo. Gordon wanted to call out and was about to do so but stopped himself when he noticed Romeo was holding something. It was a violin, Gordon was puzzled, Did Romeo know how to play it? If so, why hadn’t Romeo boasted about it. Romeo often bragged to Gordon that he was the fastest kid in school and the beatbox champion of the neighborhood, but he had never mentioned anything about playing a violin. Maybe he was terrible at it, that would explain why he never mentioned it. Gordon watched as Romeo brought up the bow and began to play. It, it was beautiful. Gordon’s jaw dropped. He recognized the tune as “Nearer my God to thee” and the sad tune was making Gordon weep. When the song came to an end, Romeo turned around and jumped, he wasn’t expecting to see Gordon awake and crying. He stumbled back. “How long have you’ve been listening”? Romeo asked. “I heard the whole thing. Romeo, you never mentioned you could play the violin so well.”  Gordon replied. “Yeah, well I can.” Romeo said as he carefully packed away the instrument in its case. Romeo blew out the candles he had lit. There was a framed picture on the barrel that Romeo was going to put away, but as he passed by Gordon to return it to his sports bag, the picture slipped out of his grasp. Gordon could see the picture and on it was a woman. She was really pretty and had something about her that felt comforting.  “Cinders and ashes”! Romeo tried to curse. He quickly grabbed the picture, checking to make sure it wasn’t damaged. “Who’s that”? Gordon asked. Romeo looked at the picture and felt emotional. “That’s my mom.” Romeo said. “She looks like a very nice lady. Did she teach you to play the violin.” Gordon asked. “Yeah, Darius used to tell me stories about how our mom would calm me down with her violin playing when we were little. I remember asking her if she could teach me to play as pretty as she did and from that day on after dinner we’d sit on the porch, and she would show me how to play.” Romeo said fondly. Gordon noticed Romeo’s demeanor. “You must miss her a lot, she’s probably missing all of you back home.” Gordon said. “Actually, she’s no longer around.” Romeo said. “Oh, Romeo, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.” Gordon apologized profusely. “It’s okay Big G.” Romeo assured. The two looked up at the stary night sky. “Whenever I get the chance, I always sneak out to the backyard and play something for her, well, at least for a photo of her. It kinda helps with the whole “loss” situation.” Romeo said. “Well, her lessons certainly shine in your music.” Gordon said. Romeo smiled. “Thanks, Big G, that means a lot.” Romeo said.
