why is healing always depicted as forgiving. you don't have to forgive the people who hurt you to heal, to be better.

you can hate them until the day you die and still have healed.

you can take revenge and still have healed. maybe the only way for you to heal is to take revenge.

why are revenge and hate always depicted as being antithetical to healing in fiction even though the characters you are talking about clearly wouldn't be able to heal without them? why is it the case in real life as well.

why is it the victims who have to be morally righteous? why are they held to a higher standard than their abusers. why are you judging the way victims react to trauma when you should be judging the people who inflicted that trauma in the first place?

why are victims the ones who are at fault when they didn't ask for any of it?

why is it the victims who always have to work for reconciliation. why are they the ones who have to be better than the ones who hurt them? why is hating the person who ruined their life considered being worse than the abuser. why would killing their abuser make them 'just as bad'?

Why do I hardly see people bring this up? Mike's trying his hardest not to show how much he wants what Will wants, but it's so obvious.

When Will says those words, the light hits him pretty hard. It represents how spending the rest of his life with Will would light up his world. Then, we see him awkwardly brush it off, looking off to the side, unsure where to even put his eyes.

"BuT ThE LiGHt rePrEseNtS WilL's FeElINgs NoT mIke'S!!"

This light isn't to shine light on Will's feelings. If that were the case, how come a light is never shined on Mike the entire season the way Will is? Mike's feelings are being hidden in plain sight through the use of cinematography and great non-verbal acting.

In the next shot, it's more focused on Will. Mike is less focused on. They most likely set up a black flag (used in film to block out light in unwanted spots) to block out light that were to hit Finn in the front, so there is something they want the audience to miss in your first watch. Where do your eyes go to first here? It will subconsciously go to Will because of the lighting and composition. Finn's micro expressions are being hidden right in front of you.

It's not a drastic difference in lighting honestly, but it IS there. You can tell they did block out on Finn's side to prevent the light on Will's side bouncing off of the seat (or whatever it is) in front of Finn and hitting him in the face.

But, why would they set this shot up like this?

They want to 'hide' Mike's feelings. Quite honestly, they aren't doing much at all to hide. They just know that majority of people have a heteronormative mindset, so it all easily goes over their head.

Although Mike is purposefully blocked out in this shot with a bit of darkness and the lack of focus, we still see him force a smile away if you take a moment away from the central point of the picture. Mike's feelings are RIGHT there, but they are purposefully distracting you with Will so they can pull off the twist in S5.

Cinematography is very precise. It's detail orientated. Cinematography isn't just making a shot look pretty and well composed - That's primarily photography/videography. Cinematography must tell a story or share an unspoken message to the watcher above anything else. It must inflict an emotion. Why do you think production is so long? It's not only about getting the right takes and scheduling, but making sure everything in the shot is actually saying something. That takes precision and careful planning.

ST does that brilliantly, especially with Byler in S4. It's literally screaming at you what's gonna happen in S5.

Anyway, this little moment is something that should be discussed more because it's silly but also so sad.

Mike wants Will forever so badly but brushes it off because he genuinely believes he can't have Will. He's also concerned about the safety of Eleven, of course. But, that stupid smile he tried to hide doesn't mean nothing. The way he brushed it off like that doesn't mean nothing. The way the shot is set up and organized isn't for nothing.

Plus, it's not like Will's the first person to suggest the idea they spend forever together...
