Except for framing, editing, and in some cases subtitles, there is virtually no room for creative intrusion.”** (6)

Feathers and Snakeskin
Summary:
Crowley calls Nina urgently for help with movie night. We find out why he's so nervous about this particular movie night. January 2024 prompt a week challenge: 1) Jane Austen, 2) “you're up to something” 3) Crowley's snake, 4) how you said I love you with something you (had) made
Work Text:
“Nina, come watch these movie trailers with me!” Crowley said urgently through the cell connection.
Nina stares at the line of the morning rush with her cell to her ear and a look of disbelief on her face, You called me with the EXCEPTIONALLY URGENT setting because you want me to watch what with you?”
“Movie trailers. I desperately need your help with movie night! Nina, please! You're my only hope!” begs Crowley.
Nina looks at the phone and at the crowd, shakes the phone a little, sighs hugely at the ceiling, and relents, “Fine, I'll be right there.”
Addressing the customers, “Oi! Either it's the end of the world or my friend's having a mental breakdown,” in the crescendo of coffee deficient despair she holds up her hands, “Eric's got this. Be nice or he won't make cookies this week!” This was met with instant polite silence. The crowd couldn't decide what was worse, being cut off from Nina's coffee or Eric's baking.
On the way out the door, Mrs. Sandwich leans into Nina, “Take care of Crowley, he's been looking off his feed lately. Won't tell me what's going on.”
Nina hurries over to the bookshop, and enters it only to find Aziraphale sitting quietly doing what looks like calligraphy at his desk while Muriel is reading.
Nina looks from one to the other and asks “Where's Crowley?”
“Not here, Nina. He went out on an errand this morning. Are you alright?” inquires Aziraphale.
“Fine. I'm fine, just needed a word, in person, with Crowley. See you for movie night later?” Nina tries to cover while walking rapidly out the door.
Once she's out of angelic earshot, she whispers into her mobile, “Why didn't you tell me you weren't at the shop! Where are you?”
“Little distracted. I'm at that movie rental place. I'll share my location with you,”
Nina's phone chimes. Her map app directs her to a video rental shop. ‘We still have one of those?’ she thinks and starts walking. “What's with all the cloak and dagger? Are you ok?”
“I'm ok. Nnnngh, not ok. Physically safe, but not ok? Is that a thing? I needed complete secrecy,” says Crowley.
“For movie trailers? You're up to something!” Nina is talking while walking through the neighborhood until she finds a familiar old storefront, ‘Kathy’s Movie Rental Emporium.’
Opening the door is like stepping into her past. There are floor to ceiling DVDs and VHS tapes, separated into movie categories with handwritten signs in Kathy’s clear hand. The shop is made of little nooks and crannies packed with movies with little sign posts on some of the shelves with directions to the different genres.
Nina had spent so much time in this shop when she was a teen. She’d been searching for a community she couldn’t name and didn’t even know if it existed or not. In Kathy’s shelves, she found windows onto other worlds, worlds where there were people like her who loved like she did and got to have the life they dreamed about. This shop had been a bright spot in an otherwise difficult series of years. She hadn’t seen the store front in ages.
“Nina, is that you, dear?” Kathy, at her usual station behind the till, is more spare now, but still sports the sharply fashionable clothes and architect’s round frames with a bob that's gone silver with age. “Yeah, Kathy, yeah, it's so good to see you! I'm sorry, I thought you'd gone out of business when streaming got big. I walked by a few times…” Nina looks bemused, then rallies, “A friend of mine is here? Crowley, chap about this tall, wears mostly black?”
Kathy comes out from behind the counter and beckons Nina to follow her behind the stacks, down a narrow corridor lined with classic movie posters. “It’s so good you came over! He's in the private theater. Needs a little help.” Kathy knocks gently on a door under red velvet curtains and gold braid.
“Cooee! Crowley? Nina's come down,” Kathy calls and opens the door.
The little private theater is big enough for about twenty people and a screen, with a little stage that Nina recalled had also hosted some fledgling cinematographers and their works. Now, it contains one agitated Crowley and drifts of huge black feathers. Nina looks from Crowley to Kathy and whispers “If I'm not out in an hour, come knock?”
Kathy's face creases into a warm smile, “Just so, dear.”
Nina turns back to Crowley saying, “What’s going on? Where’d all these feathers come from?”
Crowley continues pacing, saying, “I’m molting.”
Nina looks at him askance, “You molt?”
Dipping his head side to side, Crowley says, “I molt when I’m nervous.”
“You didn’t molt during the Second Coming,” Nina points out.
Rubbing his neck like it itches, he says, “I wasn’t nervous during the Second Coming. I was many things, but I was not nervous .”
Hands on hips still watching Crowley pace, Nina says, “Ok, you molt when you’re nervous. Why are you nervous?”
“I want movie night to be perfect this week! I want to pick the perfect movie! And I can’t see!”
Nina walks over to him quickly now, “Of course you can’t see in here, you’ve got sunglasses on!”
“I’ve got sunglasses on because of why I can’t see! I’m shedding, too,” Crowley takes off his glasses to expose eyes that are covered with a cloudy bluish-white film and rubs his chest while uncomfortably moving his neck. Nina is strongly reminded of her childhood pet corn snake when he was about to shed, all tetchy and restless.
“You shed. Like a snake?”
“I only shed when I’m really nervous. And I can’t do it in this form, but I can’t see to get home. And I’ll only keep nervously molting and shedding, until I get this movie picked out! And itchy!” grumbles Crowley.
“Ri-ight. You’re nervous about picking out a movie for our regular weekly movie night that we’ve been doing for almost two years like clockwork. And you can’t watch the trailers now because you can’t see. O-kay” Nina decides to tackle the more manageable problem first. “What movies are you choosing between?”
Pacing and scratching, Crowley says, “‘Emma’ the new 2020 version, ‘Ella Enchanted’, uh and ‘The Princess Bride’.”
“I assume that you wouldn’t be this nervous if you weren’t trying to impress Mr. Fell somehow? And these are all fluffy love stories, with twists and turns before people recognize they love each other, then happy endings. Mmm, drop ‘Ella Enchanted.’ Everyone loves Anne Hathaway, but I don’t know about the fairy tale thing.”
Crowley interjects, “‘The Princess Bride’ is one of his favorites! He talks along with all the lines.”
Nina considers, “It’s a reliable good time, but has he seen that production of ‘Emma’?”
“Don’t think so,” Crowley tugs at his collar.
“Have you?” Nina asks curiously.
“Not yet!” Crowley said exasperatedly, “The movie lady, Kathy, suggested it and I was getting ready to screen it back here, when, eyes!” he gestures angrily at his face.
“‘Emma’ then, Kathy’s a magic worker when it comes to picking the most perfect movie for you to see next,” remarks Nina decisively, “I liked that one. Stellar cast, good music, usual Jane Austen antics, remarkable costumes. Yeah, Mr Fell would enjoy it.”
But Crowley is directing a dubious look in her general direction, “You watch Jane Austen films?”
Nina pulls a face then grudgingly admits, “I may have discovered a new appreciation for them since Mr Fell made us watch that ‘Pride and Prejudice’ production back when movie night began. But don’t change the subject, that’s your movie sorted. Now, do I just fetch the Bentley and take you home or to Mr Fell’s?”
“It, uh, really can’t wait that long,” Crowley sounds a little embarrassed.
“What? You’re going to turn into a snake right here so you can shed?”
“Yessss, that about ssssumsss it up. Sssssorry.”
They’re both startled by a soft knock on the door.
“Sorry, dears, it took me a little to find it in the back of the storerooms, but I think this will do nicely for you,” Kathy wheels in a large structure of intertwining wooden roots, rough and nobbly. “Some of my naga clients have had the same thing happen to them now and then.”
“I’m not a naga,” grumps Crowley.
“Well, no, dear. Tho’ you’re handsome enough to be one and you need to shed your snake skin like one! Take all the time you need.” Kathy remarks brightly as Crowley pulls the structure further into the room, not entirely surprised to have run into another occultly attuned human.
Nina suddenly puts some very random facts together. “Kathy, do you know my grandmother, by any chance?” asks Nina.
“Of course, dear, Alvita and I go back a long way,” says Kathy.
“What’s your user name in the Book Club server then?” asks Nina.
“Why it’s ‘MovieMama’! And you must be ‘Coffeehuman’, am I right?” Kathy remarks delightedly.
“Pleassssse, ladiessss! Sssssome privassssssssy?” Crowley begs.
“Sure, sure, let me know when you’re done and I’ll help you tidy the theater,” Nina closes the door behind herself and hangs the ‘In use’ sign, shaking her head.
Pointing her thumb over her shoulder, Nina asks, “How long does this sort of thing usually take?”
“Oh, about an hour or so, but he’ll be really stunning when he’s done! The colors are never brighter than right after a shed. Would you like a sandwich while we wait?” Kathy heads up to the front of the shop again.
Nina is gazing around, “I never got a chance to tell you how important this shop, how important you were when I was figuring out about myself. I came back to the neighborhood looking for your shop, but I couldn’t find it.”
Kathy looks gently at Nina, “Thank you, dear, it was a pleasure. I got called away for a bit. But it’s lovely to be spending some time in Soho again.”
“So it wasn’t just me being mental, or you closing shop? The whole place was gone?”
“Only gone from here. I was open in one of my other locations. My Book Club user name was originally going to be ‘MultiverseMovieMama’ but it just took too long to type,” Kathy grins at Nina.
“So, I haven’t been able to find that film about the group of friends at the cottage on the coast because it’s not from this world?”
“Yes. I’ve still got the copy. Would you like to watch it now?”
“Would I ever! It’s hilarious!” Nina exclaimed.
Crowley did come out in about two hours looking rather spiffy, if you fancied men. Nina was just glad to see that he looked human and calmer. She went into the theater with some large plastic trash bags, “I’ll get the feathers, but the snakeskin is all you.”
“Fair,” said Crowley, unwrapping twenty or so feet of fresh snakeskin from the wooden sculpture and gently putting it into another plastic bag.
While they worked, Nina asks, “What’s making you so nervous that you’re shedding and molting? I can’t believe you’re driving yourself crazy about just a movie?”
Finding feathers that have gotten into surprising places, Crowley replies, “I need to talk to Aziraphale and I’m hoping the movie will help me, maybe get him in the right mood.”
“Get him in the right mood for what? You don’t need a rom-com to make him realize he loves you. You’ve already done that.” Nina stares hard at him with her head to the side, then the penny drops, “You’re not going to propose to Mr Fell?” She surveys Crowley’s sudden stillness, “You’re going to propose to Mr Fell!!! Why!??”
“See, I knew you’d understand,” he smiles ruefully.
“Understand what? You don’t need to get married! You can be 100% committed to each other and faithful, why would you want all that silly ceremony? Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure Mr Fell would be over the moon!” which sets off a sappy smile on Crowley’s face, “But you can’t want…why?” and Nina suddenly doesn’t look like she’s talking about just Crowly and Aziraphale’s relationship.
Crowley flops down on a theater seat with his bag of feathers in his lap and Nina sits down next to him, hands playing with a long black pinion feather that just escaped.
“The past two years have been amazing, remarkable, more happiness than I would have thought I deserved. But, everything still feels up in the air, not locked down, somehow. I want to show Aziraphale that I will make the most binding contract I know of to say I never want to leave. Even if I get angry or he does, I’ll do the work necessary to stay an ‘us’.” Crowley looks over at Nina hoping she understands, but she’s turned a bit away from him and her voice sounds a little choked when she asks, “You want to show him or you want him to show you? You’re still worried that he’ll leave again, aren’t you?”
Crowley scrubs his face with his hands, “Nailed it again, Nina,” he says ruefully.
“But why do you want any relationship advice from me? The last time Maggie and I gave you relationship advice about talking to Mr Fell…” Nina breaks off.
“Trust me, Nina, the advice was good. I just carried it out badly,” admits Crowley softly.
Nina turns back to him, and smiles a little tremulously. “That's what marriage means to you? A commitment to never stop trying to be the best partners you can be? Whether he or you needs supporting or to be called out?”
“Yeah,” says Crowley.
“And you think you can tell him that, too?” asks Nina.
“Yeah,” says Crowley.
Nina nods decisively, “Right then, you’ve got my blessing or whatever.”
Crowley looks surprised, “Your blessing?”
“Or whatever, I assume that's what you were needing? A marriage skeptic to kick you in the arse?”
Staring at her again, Crowley slowly grins, “Yeah, something like that. Thanks for coming over. If you'll just help me get these bags of feathers out to the Bentley for safekeeping? I've got a few more errands to run before tonight.”
Aziraphale looked up when the doorbell tinkled, and the breath caught in his throat. Crowley stood framed with the light falling on him from the shop windows with his hair iridescently red. Azriaphale was taken again by the line of his jaw, the lithe energy in his frame. A single black feather materialized and drifted gently to the floor.
Crowley was likewise arrested by the sight of Aziraphale with the light somehow igniting the dust motes into a literal halo about his head. Caught by the look of wonder in his eyes, his quiet strength, and in the way he seemed so comfortable in himself. The ink was still wet on a heavy piece of cardstock covered with the angel’s best copperplate.
“I brought a movie for movie night.” Crowley said, “And Coca-cola’s for the rum and cokes. Proper glass bottles, “ Crowley held up the bottles as evidence.
Aziraphale stood at his desk, “Everyone’s given their regrets. Last minute things, couldn’t be avoided. It’s just you and me tonight,” Aziraphale’s hand reaches down to twirl his ring as he steps forward to take the cardboard crate of glass bottles from Crowley’s hand, the light sparkling in the glass and illuminating the deep sepia beverage within. Rather than going all the way to the kitchen, or even breaking eye contact with Crowley, he just reaches back to set it on whatever flat surface is available.
“It’s rather fortuitous actually,” Aziraphale continues, “There’s something I’ve been meaning to talk with you about.”
“Yeah, uh, there’s something I’ve been meaning to talk with you about, too,” Crowley stammers and another ebony feather materializes as it drifts towards the floor.
“Oh, well, you first, dear boy, last time we both wanted to talk at the same time…I should have let you say your piece,” Aziraphale's eyes well up with tears at the memory.
“I’ve learned that I can stand to listen better. Go ahead, Angel,” Crowley says softly.
Aziraphale is spinning his ring now and biting his lip, “We’ve been courting for almost two years now, and it’s glorious, really it is.” Crowley has leaned back to grasp the shop door behind him for support.
“I just always thought it would be a…a temporary phase,” the angel says haltingly.
“Temporary…?” Crowley croaks.
“Yes, like before we…well, you’ll think I’m silly,” Aziraphale looks away.
“Before we?” Crowley, breathing again, stands up from where he was leaning against the door and catches the angel’s hand in his.
“Before we…got married. See! I knew you’d think I’m just an old silly!” and the angel tries to pull away, but Crowley tugs him back, saying softly,
“I think I should have my go now, alright?” smiling gently while reaching into his jacket, Crowley pulls out a small jewelry box. “I love you, a lot. And I want to be with you, trying to be the best ‘us’ we can be, good times, hard times, both. And I would like…for you… to marry me.”
“You’re asking me? You’re asking me?!” Aziraphale sounds astonished.
“Angel, if you don’t give me your answer right now, I swear…Don’t you want…?” doubt is creeping back into the corners of his voice.
“Want to marry you? Of course , I want to marry you! I’ve wanted to marry you for the past two years! I thought you didn’t care for all that ceremony, and,”
But Crowley is kissing him, and Aziraphale is heartily kissing him back and they’re both crying, by the time they breathlessly break off from kissing with Aziraphale’s, “Oh!”
Aziraphale starts patting all over his coat and vest, mumbling, “Drat! Where has it gotten to!” and he finally sighs and slips his hand into the breast pocket of his vest, pulling out a small leather pouch that’s been resting over his heart for more than a year.
“I had this made for you, in case we ever did, get married officially.” Aziraphale spills a ring into his palm, a black band with gold inlay to form interlocking wings.
Kissing Aziraphale’s temple gently, Crowley says, “I love it, Angel. Here's mine for you,” and Crowley opens the jewelry box that contains a gold ring sporting fine engraving that creates the look of a DaVinci sketch of intertwining dark feathers and light.
“Oh! It’s very like your friend’s drawings! Well done!” Aziraphale remarks.
Solicitously picking up the few feathers that have fallen to the floor, Aziraphale asks, “Is this why you’ve been molting, dear? I wondered what was bothering you so.”
“Yeah, ‘fraid so. What have you been doing with the feathers?”
“Oh, I just stuff them in the eiderdown with mine, or use them as quills. I've, uh, been mocking up wedding invitations, um, using our feathers for quills,” says Aziraphale.
Crowley looks at the drying invitation on the desk, eyebrows raised, “How many invitations have you done?”
“Oh several dozen, they're in my trousseau with the complimenting monogrammed handkerchiefs!” the angel burbles nervously.
“A trousseau?! I look forward to seeing that…especially the garters,” Crowley grins mischievously.
Crowley looks over his shoulder at the coffee shop where all their friends are glued to the windows trying to see their exchange.
Aziraphale follows his gaze, “Shall we let them in on the good news?” then opens the door behind Crowley and sweeps him out onto the step where the angel bellows, “I SAID YES!” and then tugs Crowley into a jog across the street. They tumble hand in hand into the coffee shop into a cacophony of hugging, crying, laughing people. Their friends are jumping up and down, and everyone is either hugging someone or clamoring to hear all about the proposal, before they move the party over to Kathy's shop to watch ‘Emma.’

bad idea (let's keep kissing) [ninex] - pinkgrapefruit
A/N - welcome to ninex and waitress - otherwise known as my love letter to meggie (she’s like my mum and i love her). thank you to beanie and mac for betaing and advising! please let me know what you think and enjoy!
*
It’s a bad idea, me and you
I know, I totally agree
It’s a bad idea, me and you
I’ve never known anything so true
It’s a terrible idea, me and you
They’ve always been electric. Neon sign, Blackpool illuminations, Times Square electric. At one point the director asked if Nina could play the Doctor instead - if they could gender-bend the entire production just to have the chemistry play out on stage every night and she would have agreed, given up the possibility of ever playing Jenna just to kiss Monet for money eight times a week. Like she said back then, she wouldn’t have complained.
No one ever asked what Monet thought. Yes, her eyes were pretty obvious, the blown pupils and the way her tongue darted out every time Nina stepped on stage but it was just a bit of chemistry (ironically, the exact justification used by a teenage Monet to explain why her science grade had dropped when she got the lead in a school play - it never worked).
So they skirt each other, wait till there is the acceptable three feet of space to avoid an electric shock. Insulate. Protect. Avoid.
Until they don’t.
Somewhere between the avoidance and ignoring, Monet hasn’t looked at Nina in months and then suddenly, she looks even more beautiful.
You have a wife
You have a husband
You’re my doctor
You’ve got a baby coming
It’s a bad idea, me and you
Let’s just keep kissing ‘til we come to
“This is a terrible idea,” exhales Monet as she leans back into her chair, Nina straddling her legs and leaving sweet cherry kisses on her neck. “We work together - God, this was supposed to be a show.”
The other woman sits up a little on her legs, moves her lips from her neck to place a long, tender kiss on Monet’s lips. She smiles shyly as she pulls away, reaches a hand from where it was placed on her hip to wipe the stray lipstick away.
“God we’re a cliche,” Nina giggles softly, biting her lip as she says it before sliding off Monet’s (very crumpled apron) and onto the chair opposite. She links their fingers with a smile. “I think this was possibly a rather bad idea,” but as she says it, she smiles like it’s the best idea she’s ever had.
“If people find out- “
“We deal with it.”
“But - “
“Monet, I’m supposed to be the nervous mess - Calm down, honey.” She squeezes their intertwined fingers with a finality that tells the other woman the conversation is most certainly over for now.
A knock on the dressing room door causes them to jump apart, hands splitting as they both move to reapply their lipstick (to look like they were doing anything but making out). “Come in,” one of them calls and Brooke opens the door looking unimpressed.
“You know it’s a bad day when you can’t find either of the Jennas,” She sighs, obviously turning off her headset and tapping her clipboard. “I won’t say a word of this to anyone,” she then hisses, almost conspiratorially, “But lord help me if we don’t have a Jenna for act two - Nina you’re a swing for a reason.”
Monet chuckles as she finishes checking herself but sees Brooke’s pointed glare in the mirror and changes her mind. She squeezes Nina’s hip before following the Canadian muttering something about ‘the power of showbiz’ and how ‘these aprons don’t get ironed.’
Nina sinks back down into the chair, hovers a finger over the ghost of the other girl’s lips and wonders how the hell she got on Broadway in the first place.
Heart, stop racing
Let’s face it, making mistakes like this will make worse what was already pretty bad
Mind, stop running
It’s time we just let this thing go
It was a pretty good bad idea, wasn’t it though?
They sneak out of stage door after the show, wait until the fans have all left and hope none of the production team spots them. It’s New York in the winter and so both are bundled up warm in layers upon layers. Monet’s clothes are almost sleek - she looks put together and expensive as she hurries Nina down the subway stairs. Nina, on the other hand, looks like a walking craft fair - and Monet wouldn’t have it any other way.
They hold hands on the subway and neither of them flinches when they get dirty looks from the eleven o’clock perverts - simply keeping their heads low but together. Monet places a chaste peck on the top of Nina’s ear and the girl damn near swoons.
They hurry up above ground where they await the warm safety of the streetlights and patrol cars - dodge between drunk men and frisky couples to wander home. Somewhere along the way, it starts to snow and Nina sticks her tongue out tentatively - trying to catch the fleeting remnants of winter, taste the memories.
When they reach Monet’s apartment, Nina is pushed against the inside of the door. Monet firmly places a knee between her legs, holding her in place to suck a row of neat kisses onto the exposed collarbone. It’s flushed red from the sudden heat and patches slowly turn purple under the pressure as Nina’s fingers thread through her partner’s hair. She sighs contentedly and Monet stops to peck her lips before dragging her through the nearest door and pushing them both gently onto the couch.
It’s a bad idea, me and you
It’s a bad idea, me and you
Hold me close while I think this through
Yeah, it’s a very poor idea, me and you
Nina wakes up on the couch. Her hand is numb under the weight of Monet, who is still fast asleep tucked between her and the back of the sofa. In the early morning light, she looks almost ethereal. The glow of dawn casts shadows across her face that only make her look younger, more innocent, less burdened with the pressures of being one of Broadway’s up and comings.
Nina is sure she looks like none of the above, feeling the way her mascara makes her eyelashes stick to her under eyes every time she blinks. She supposes that it could symbolise the way her heart sticks and tugs a little every time she looks at Monet but she’s always been a poetic theatre kid and real life doesn’t work like a story book. Romance is an idea to be bought and sold with ticket stubs and a rosé.
She prises herself off the sticky leather of the couch, rubbing her exposed leg gently where it had stuck, and cracks her neck as she sits up. She grabs her belongings from where they had been strewn on the floor and runs a hand through the stiff hairspray residue of her hair. When she leaves she tries not to look back. Her conscience is too precious.
Heart, stop racing
Let’s face it, making mistakes like this will make worse what was already pretty bad
Mind, stop running
It’s time we just let this thing go
It was a pretty good bad idea, wasn’t it though?
It’s scary how easy it is to return to avoiding each other. It doesn’t take much - maybe a different hallway here, a change of side there and you’re all good. No awkward encounters or long glances into all-too-revealing eyes.
Nina’s conscience weighs heavy on her shoulders for a while, like she’s carrying the weight of the world on tight muscle and blue fabric. She rubs her neck with the pads of her thumb trying to loosen the knots she got from overthinking and lack of sleep, ignores how the rise and fall of her chest aches on a level that’s not quite pain. It hurts like a breakup and yet it had never really started.
The real pain comes from the way Monet cannot look her in the eye anymore. There is no flirting, no banter and no electric connection. The sparks fly like a faulty wire - they are unintended and dangerous and go nowhere - yet they could burn.
I know it’s right for me
It’s the only thing I’ve ever done
What if I never see myself ever be anything more
Than what I’ve already become?
She tells Brooke halfway through January when she can no longer shoulder the burden alone. Nina falls onto an arm chair looking forlorn and feels as her chest fragments into a china teacup and a saucer. And then she watches as Brooke skillfully tapes and glues her back together with love and affection and a listening ear.
She tells Brooke about the months of pining and how it had led to a magical night that couldn’t seem to make it to morning. How the night had flown like a raven out of the window and Nina had felt hollow when she awoke, achy and cold.
Brooke tells her she’s stupid and makes another cup of tea.
She posits that the emptiness came from fulfilment rather than absence and the cold was simply the lack of clothes. She tells her it’s simple and then she kicks her out of the office with nothing more than a sigh and a knowing smile.
Nina damn hopes Brooke knows.
I need a bad idea
I need a bad idea
I need a bad idea
I need a bad idea
Just one
It’s a long empty hallway. The same one kids sit in before they make their big breaks in New York. It’s an audition office - the air heavy with the weight of lost dreams and regret, but it smells like Cinnabon and heavy cream.
Nina finds Monet there like she knew she would. The air feels sticky and warm like the AC broke in the middle of summer but it is still only January and the windows are condensated and sparkle in the early afternoon sun. She presumes that the hallway means the same thing to Monet that it does to her - new hopes, new beginnings, new dreams.
She has dreams.
“Monet,” she calls out, something in her voice breaking a little in the hard silence.
Monet turns her head ever so slightly, there’s a sad smile on her face and it hurts Nina to see it.
“Can we- Can we talk?”
She pats the seat next to her and Nina moves slowly as if not to scare her off. They end up side by side on a cold wooden bench facing a casting board. It has eleven or so pictures on it - headshots of a few of the actors - and Monet’s and Nina’s are right next to each other.
“I remember the day this was taken,” Monet states broadly. It sounds almost as if she’s thinking out loud but there’s a certain conviction to the words. “Bob’s balcony, the light comes from his old monitor with the screen turned on.”
“It’s a beautiful picture.”
“I know.”
Nina sighs and readjusts herself so she’s leaning against the concrete wall behind them, hands either side of herself.
“Summer twenty-fourteen,” she laughs nervously, the Ohio twang returning as she says it. “Virginia took it on my last trip back home.”
“You look…” starts Monet before she trails off.
“I look?”
“Younger. More naive,” she eventually finishes.
Nina’s hand moves of its own accord to cup Monet’s chin, a move bolder than she’s ever really done before. She turns the girl’s head gently so they’re facing each other and takes a quiet inhale.
“I’m sorry,” she says, “I was an asshole.”
“It’s okay,” Monet smiles, tilting her head, and the sad look in her eyes fades a little. “You were scared.”
“I was.”
“I still am.”
They kiss slowly like Nina’s always wanted. She wonders if this is what romance feels like when it’s raw and pure. Distilled essence of love, bottled and sold to the fools in the hallway, hands clasped in Monet’s lap like the other will run again.
It’s not an unfair worry.
Heart, keep racing
Let’s make mistakes
Let us say “so what?” and make worse what was already pretty bad
This secret is safe
No reason to throw it away when there’s love to be had
“We kissed again!” gushes Nina, sat on Brooke’s desk while the other woman tries to fill out some paperwork. She looks up with a quirked eyebrow and a faintly proud smile as Nina seems to be bouncing out of her own skin - excitement bubbling.
“And you’re telling me because?” she asks, still flicking through the document, scribbling her signature by the tabs.
“Because you’re you.” Nina stands up, lamenting slightly, “and I’m me, and you and Ness are sooo good!” Brooke smiles at the sound of her wife’s name, glowing a little just thinking about her. “And you’re having a baby and if I can’t ask you for your help who can I?”
Brooke stands up, closing the book and looking Nina in the eyes. She is wiser than she should be at twenty-something and Nina values her opinion above anyone else’s.
“We got through this shit because we talked. There was no walking out, no nothing. When she wanted to have a baby, I made a cup of tea and we talked.” Nina nods slowly. “Now I’m going to make a cup of tea and we’re going to talk, capisce?”
“Yes.”
Hold me tight as I tell myself that you might make sense
And make good what has been just so bad
Let’s see this through
It’s a pretty good bad idea
Nina wakes up between two warm cotton sheets. Her bare back presses against a warm body and she can feel cold toes pushing into her calves. As smoothly and quietly as she can, she turns onto her back, moving an arm so the other woman stops spooning her back and wraps around her side, head nestling into the crook of her shoulder.
She sighs contentedly. Monet snuggles into her even more. Nina reckons staying over was a damn good idea.
Me and you

Cracking the Code of Your City
"I believe every city has a key to it. If you can find the key to your city, you can unlock the opportunity to reach them with the love of Jesus."
- Ps Marc Estes, City Bible Church, Portland OR
If every city has a key to it, how do we find it?
It’s easy to take what we’ve learned, read, seen, and been taught about church and reproduce it. But the truth is, every city is unique, living, breathing, and ever changing. If you are called to a city, you are called to its people. Not just to bring in answers and solutions – but to engage in conversations.
A city is made up of individuals, their stories, their pasts, their dreams, their fears, their talents, and their potential. And they collectively not just represent – but actively shape its statistics.
As we study the demographics, economy, statistics, and so on, we must first remember…
A city is it’s people.
If we want to unlock the “key” to our city, we must start by unlocking the key to individuals hearts. And that can only come through engaging and listening. If we want to “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves” – we must first let them be heard in our own ears.
At Antioch Church in Long Beach, CA, Ps. Wayne Chaney and his team are cracking the code in their community. He says that the first step in doing this is through authentic relationships and listening more than we speak.
“Sociological observations are great. I celebrate seminary education. But you learn so much from legitimately doing life with and living amongst the people. Interacting. Listening.”
“In urban centers, particularly places experiencing gentrification, we’re seeing a lot of people coming in with a plan as the hot shot to those communities. But so much can be gleaned from the people who are already there.”
“Our first job, I think, particularly when coming into a community, is to learn all that we can. Again, to listen more than we speak. No matter what we’ve come with in terms of prescribed ideas, they have to yield and adjust to the environment that we are in. That’s extremely significant. To learn the rhythm of every city.”
Ps. Wayne describes the rhythm of his own city he has come to know well. How being just 25 minutes away from Los Angeles the entire atmosphere and culture changes. The rhythm is different. “We have to understand the difference between cities.”
An understanding of his city has led to meeting many needs through food banks, prison ministry, legal aid, counseling, and much more. All through knowing the city and empowering the people of Antioch Church to discover their own “Passion Points” to make a difference. Ps. Wayne describes their vision to “become more like Christ and to create environments that are more like heaven.”
Nina Vickers, Outreach Director of Together Church in Yakima WA, similarly shares that our first step in cracking to code to our communities is to first “ask” then “listen”.
“Go to the local jails, schools, police departments, and senior centers. Ask questions.”
“How many residents do you have living here? How many of them don’t have family members around?”
“We see there’s a high gang violence rate right now; we’re here to help whatever you need.”
We can’t come in with our own plan. We may have great ideas to make a difference. But we may not even be seeing the real problems yet. Ask and listen.
But what if we ask and then find the need is too great? That we don’t have the resources or adequate ability to respond?
Nina answers, We go in with no expectation. We ask ‘if you could do anything, what would you do?’. Though we know their answers could be endless, we make it clear upfront that we can’t make any promises - but we can commit to praying. That’s our starting block. From there we can work to connect the dots from needs to partners, volunteers, service groups, etc. Don’t be afraid to ask these questions. Even if you don’t have the answers – someone does.
We’ve partnered with a local elementary school for five years now. Another local church has done the same with different school nearby. Actually, over these years all of our local elementary schools have been adopted by churches. We now have the entire Yakima school district, all of the schools, all of the churches meeting together once a month. We’ve seen test scores go up, absences go down, parents getting involved, church members tutoring, service projects taking place. That’s the result of the faith community coming in and not saying that we have all of the answers, but saying “we know that there’s a list of needs at schools and together we can tackle them one at a time. We may not have the answer to the whole problem, but we can help with a portion of it. And those portions add up.”
Don’t be afraid to go to places that people say you can’t.
Nina shares that if they had held back on this partnership with the schools because they knew there was red tape between church and state, or because the problems seemed too big, then they would have missed breaking a barrier that has now made a major impact. Not just on the school they adopted, or the neighboring schools they partner with, or the Yakima School District, but now even other school districts are coming in to LEARN and model what they have built. The school is coming to the church for answers.
Sometimes, you may get told no, but you may also get told yes!
A few years ago, in Loveland, Colorado, an uproar broke out in the community when a travelling art exhibition passed through displaying a heinous image of Jesus entitled “The Misadventures of the Romantic Cannibals”. As protests, lead by Christians, were breaking out, the story made local and even national news. There were 37,000 hate letters and death threats sent to the artist and museum in a span of 6 days – all by self-proclaimed Christians.
Ps. Jonathan Wiggins of Rez Church recounts his response.
During the time this outrage was unfolding, their church was focusing all of their energy on a new event for first time believers. Someone in the church contact Ps. Jonathan prompting him to catch up on what was happening outside of the church.
Realizing there needed to be shift of focus from inward to outward, Ps. Jonathan started reading the news, looking up the stories, and checking out this art piece that was causing such a riot. He says I didn’t like it one bit. But I didn’t really care about the art. I believe it’s our job as pastors, leaders, and believers to be watchmen. This was a watchmen moment. It wasn’t about the art – it was about the artist.
Ps. Jonathan decided to reach out to the artist via email (it wasn’t hard to find). His subject line read “Message From a Pastor in Loveland”, knowing that would grab the artist’s attention based on the negative feedback he had been receiving from the faith community.
The email started, Hey, I’m a newer pastor in the community. I know what’s been going on with the protests. Honestly, I’m not reaching out to argue with you. I’d just like you hear what it is you’re trying to say.
Within two hours the artist responded with a four paragraph message explaining his perspective of Jesus. Being raised in the Catholic church, he described how the Catholic school had been very abusive to him. This was his way of essentially getting back.
In his message, the artist said to Ps. Jonathan, I think the idea of Jesus is beautiful. It’s the pastors and priests that make him look terrible.
Over the course of several days, these message exchanges continued and God gave Ps. Jonathan an idea. He replied to the artist, You said that the idea of Jesus is beautiful to you. I would like to see how you see Jesus. Would you create an honoring image of Him? If you do, I will hang it up in my church.
Now this guy is a world class artist. He has pieces in the Met in NY, the Sydney Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, etc. And I basically just asked him for a free image of Jesus.
Surprisingly he agreed, but with the question “but would your church accept something from someone like me?”
Of course the answer to this sobering question was yes. And from that, the artist asked Ps. Jonathan to describe his Jesus.
“Of all the opportunities I’ve had to share my faith I knew this was it. Instead of describing the Jesus we see in pictures, I began to share the Jesus of the Bible. The One who is able to see people where others see labels. The One who had high standards but at the same time offered forgiveness to people right in the middle of their darkest moments. I shared of what He did on the cross, saying Father forgive them. And as I’m describing Jesus to this artist, I am crying and praying for his soul.”
To this the artist responded, “I see Jesus in your description and that will be my guide for the portrait.”
The painting, valued by insurance companies at $35,000, is now displayed at Rez Church as a testimony for all to see.
The artist expressed to Ps. Jonathan that their friendship has brought a profound transformation to his life. And though there isn’t proof that he has since put his faith in Jesus, the artist travels worldwide telling the story of how a church in Loveland, Colorado and a pastor that reached out as a friend, is reflecting Jesus in an honoring way.
This experience has opened wild opportunities for Ps. Jonathan and Rez Church to receive new artists to their church family, invitations to art exhibitions, requests for art critiques, ivy league schools requesting comments on new pieces.
“I’m from a trailer park” Ps. Jonathan humbly and jokingly points out – “but God has opened doors for us in Loveland, nationally, and internationally, just because we took a minute to reach out. It was offensive, but he was broken, hurting, and just needed someone to be available and to listen.”

Koi Farm Guide
Buy Now
The Koi Farm Guide will tell you everything you need to know about setting up your own highly profitable Koi Breeding enterprise!
“ATTENTION: If you have a Koi farm business or are about to start one, this may be the most Valuable Letter you will ever read…”:
I was blown away by these numbers!
“A Multi-Billion Dollar Business”
The Ornamental Fish Business Is A Multi-Billion Dollar Business and Is a Business where literally anyone can make a six figure income in…and you don’t need a University Degree to do it.
Keeping and raising ornamental fish (including Koi) is the #2 hobby in the world, 2nd only to Photography!
The total spent on the hobby in the U.S. alone is over $2 billion a year.
Nearly 13 million households, and growing, in the U.S. currently keep ornamental fish.
The Koi Industry is a multi BILLION Dollar Global Industry and a large chunk of the demand for the product lies right in the United States.
Many in the U.S. previously obtained Koi through international imports but USDA regulations have made this increasingly more difficult and costly.
Now…Let’s not ignore the elephant in the room here:
The Demand is There (we love Koi)
A Supply Source has been stifled with “red tape”
Prices have gone up as a result
Can You See The Huge Opportunity In Starting Your Own High Profit Koi Breeding Business?
You get in on a high demand, exploding industry.
You set your own hours and are in complete control of your life.
You provide a service with exceptionally high profit margins
You can run this business from your home – no office needed.
Earn a full years income in a matter of months
You are your own boss and don’t take orders from anybody.
From: JT Abney
Dear Friend:
My name is JT Abney and I have something to share with you.
If you are an entrepreneur who is looking to find the exact steps that you can take to set up your own highly profitable Koi Farm, then I suggest that you read every word of this letter...
“Koi Farming is about to explode as an industry”
So if I were to reveal to you (which I will in a minute) that Koi Farming is about to explode as an industry, you’d rightfully ask “Just who is this guy that’s talking to us about Koi Farms?”
Well…for starters I’m not just some marketer in a plush office who saw an opportunity on CNN and decided to write an ebook. That’s not the case at all. In fact, many generations of my family have worked and made their livings in the Gulf of Mexico and it’s fishing grounds. Below is a picture of the actual oil platform that my grandfather worked on in the 1950’s, as my dad grew up on Grand Isle, La.
I continue to live and work on the Gulf Coast and became heavily involved in promoting the aquaculture industry after the Gulf Oil Spill that had such a tragic effect on our region. My highly acclaimed Shrimp Farming Guide and Tilapia Farming Guide have both been on the market for several years and continue to help people investigate and enter these industries daily.
In my time, I have found that there is ALWAYS a way to build something sustainable from any ruin that has been tossed on our doorstep, including changes in market conditions, government regulations – you name it. Koi Farming and Koi Breeding is just another logical step. .
I see an opportunity and a demand in the market so have put some very serious time into creating a valuable product to help fill that need – but I am also a very interested party.
“This is My Home…”
This is my home and my hope is also that some of the displaced businesses and business people in this economy will find their way into some new opportunities such as this one, because it’s a beauty!
Whether you are one of the many unfortunates affected by environmental conditions or simply a savvy entrepreneur who knows a hot market when they see it, information on starting and running a Koi Farm is scarce!
Are you frustrated wiith the limited quality of Koi Farm books on the market? Are you disappointed again that they are difficult to follow? Not enough information? Do you have questions about raising koi properly that need to be answered?
You have tons of questions about raising koi and you’re sick and tired of searching for information from all over the place, struggling to get the true and complete facts.
If you have any interest at all in koi farming…and if you want to find out what type of Koi you should grow…or you just want to figure out whether you should start a koi farm or not…keep reading on for the most important information you need to know.
“Raising Koi For Profit”
If you’re serious about Raising Koi for profit, there are several questions you need to consider:
How many types of Koi are there? Which ones should I raise?
How much does it cost to get started?
What type of food do Koi eat?
How do you feed growing Koi?
What enemies or predators do Koi have?
How much space do you need for raising Koi?
Making a mistake when farming Koi can be deadly for your fish…not to mention costly, frustrating and downright depressing.
You also need to consider:
Are there any permits or licenses needed???
You have heard of fish farming actually being harmful to the environment. Is this really the case…what does it actually mean…and how can you counteract that???
Are there any associations, clubs or organizations relating to Koi breeding and aquaponics where you can get support???
How do you know what the water quality in the ponds should be and how to test it???
“How to Farm Raise Koi”
If you or one of your loved ones wants to know how to farm raise Koi from start to finish, but have a lot of doubt or questions…
…then this could be the most informative letter you have ever read.
Koi…The Essential Facts
Discover just how long koi have been around and their incredibe symbolism
Learn the origins of Koi Breeding and Aquaponics
See why Koi Shows are popular and why you should be involved
What is a Koi anyway? An overview of Koi physiology and anatomy

Disease is a major concern in Koi Farming…important information to keep your crop safe
Weather…Did you know that El Nino and La Nina can drastically impact Fish Farms world-wide?
Why not just “what” you feed your fish BUT “how” you feed them can have a huge impact on your harvest
Harvesting and Packaging…learn the importance of doing this exactly the right way every time.
Your Important Alliances. Discover EXACTLY who you need to align yourself with to get your product to market…for the best price.
“Everything You Need to Get Started”
Resources, Resources, Resources
Loads of resources you’ll need to connect with a huge number of Koi breeders and aquaculture suppliers across the globe.
Find everything you need to get started rasing Koi including: equipment, supplies, medicine, feed, feeders…you name it!
Do NOT get this if…
You want to get rich overnight: Hey, who doesn’t, but this is NOT fantasy land.
You immediately want to start a big high-profile, sloppy enterprise with no regard for your industry, your community or your environment. You can’t build any kind of business without a foundation and a network. Bottom line: For any structure to stand – you need a solid foundation.
You want a pretty coffee table-style book to impress your friends. Nope again. This is nuts and bolts presented in a non-flashy manner so that you can start planning your operations immediately.
Before I go on…let me ask you a few questions:
Would you like to quit the Rat Race?
Are you tired of working to make your boss rich instead of you?
Would you like to lose the fear of being fired or laid off?
Do you want to take complete control of your financial future?
Would you like to have instant cash in your pocket whenever you need it?
If you answered “Yes” to any of the above questions, DO NOT STOP NOW, what you are about to read below could help you change your life…
Consider this:
Build your business and work your business according to what YOU want and are happy with.
You will never have to look through the “help wanted” ads again.
Build your company to as big as you can handle. Make your goal to work part-time or to have 5 crews working for you. It’s all up to YOU.
Obviously, there’s hard work involved. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just selling “the dream” and… unfortunately that’s all it is.
So if you’re looking to develop financial freedom and financial independence…the reason why I’m doing this now is because I know things that you may not know. I know what’s happening with the U.S. dollar. I know what’s going to happen with the economy in the United States and around the world.
If you think things are tough now, hold onto your seat.
The next few years are going to be tougher than you can imagine. The governments are propping it up. And they may succeed in keeping it propped up, but it’s on false promises and it’s being propped up on false hope. At some point, it will crash.
The time to build your business is now.
The good news is…today is your lucky day. I’ve assemble some of the greatest materials on starting a Koi Farming business ever created. Never before has there been such a wealth of material all in one place.
There’s no risk whatsoever with The Koi Farm Guide

That being said, I mean it very nicely when I ask that if you don’t have the intention of going through and taking action, please don’t order. I know the power of the material and it would just be a waste of your time and mine if you don’t even intend on reading it, agreed?

Tips and Tricks for Success for New Entrepreneurs
Sure Fire Ways to Have a Successful Business Venture!
To become a successful entrepreneur you need good ideas, a little luck, money and lots of hard work. 90% of successsful people fail, which means to gain something (profits, equity, etc) you must first lose something (your initial investment). Phat-farm is a multimillion dollar company whose owner Russell Simmons lost 10 million dollars in the first five years.
A lot of experience and resources are not required but to become a successful entrepreneur you need to have passion and persistence.
Turning everyday ideas into business is what makes an ordinary entrepreneur extraordinary. This talent or gift is what makes them unique. Most start with very limited resources and jump ahead of their competitors through personal effort. The moves have to be fast and good decisions need to be taken to gain share in the market and move foward against bigger competitors.

“Still Worried About $28…Gimme a Break!”
So why am I charging $28 for this guide? Well, I’ll tell you. I thought about what to charge and I can charge just about anything I wanted. Most people think that $28, once they get their hands on the materials…is way too cheap for it. And that’s why I’m planning to raise the price pretty soon.
The main reason I decided to charge at least this much for the materials is because I would have people who were willing to take action. Winners. Real doers. Nothing I hate more than to listen to somebody talking about wanted to be in any sort of business and not be willing to take any action to be there.
Everybody thinks you have to be really smart to be successful and it’s just not true. You just have to get the information that you need to get started. And then find other smart people.
One of my heroes in life, Henry Ford, said “I can answer any question in the world if you’ll give me 30 minutes”. That’s because he had a golden rolodex of experts that advised him.
Most People don’t have any idea that Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light bulb had no idea about science, none at all. He had no training, no formal education in science, but he had experts around him that knew everything there was to know about chemistry and electricity and all of the other sciences that he used to invent the incandescent light bulb.
This is the true demonstration that Napoleon Hill talked about in his great book Think and Grow Rich. All you need is desire coupled with specialized knowledge and an action plan to achieve any level of success that you want.
Now, I have the specialized knowledge and I have the action plan. Do you have the desire? If not, this isn’t for you. If you’re just looking around reading on the Internet, dreaming about what life might be like if you had a business, don’t waste your money.
But if you really think you’re going to take action, if you’re really going to do something, if you’re really going to make your move, make your mark in life, then go ahead and order this information right now. It will be the smartest investment you’ll ever make.
This is your opportunity to shine. Are you going to actually do something? Or are you just going to sit there and kick some more tires? Come on. Hit the button below and let’s get started.

Critic Of Music
Vocal type: Bass. Positives: Robust, clear lower register that is projected well. Bass is achieved with great technique and support down to F#2. A highlight of the voice. Slightly brightening as he ascends, the middle register still maintains ease and displays a warm, masculine tone. Though he gains a slight (pushed) rasp above E4, his voice remains open, projecting well. Well-developed mixed voice, allowing him to access a clean, head-dominant C5 belt. A light, warm falsetto that Sho has no issues staying in for extended periods. This area possesses a soft vibrato and is reached with ease until around Eb5 when he needs more volume to phonate. Solid understanding of musical phrasing, being considerate to the music by changing vocal colors, texture and dynamics. Negatives: The upper extremes of the falsetto are unstable and undeveloped and the chest register thins as he ascends. Though he mixes at the extremes of his chest voice, the rest of the belting range could use a more even mix.

Decal: 1993-1998 (Part 1)
Tracks & Traces #12: Within a year or so of moving to Dublin in late 1992 I got to know Dennis McNulty and Alan O’Boyle through the live music scene. Sometime in 1993 they would join forces to form the electronic duo, Decal. They not only went on to produce some truly great music but through their record label and roles as DJs and club promoters, they were hugely influential and encouraging to other artists as well as to a wider dance/electronic music scene in Ireland and beyond. I’m not sure how well their story is known these days but I am happy to share my perspective and gather up all the information and relevant links into one place in the hope that a few more people might discover their music and story through this piece.
When I met them they were still very much involved with guitar bands, Dennis was in Monomer and later in Cruiser and A-Tone and Alan was in Unease and later joined In Motion. These were all noteworthy bands in their own right, some of which would run in parallel with Decal for a time. I interviewed Dennis about the group in 1996 and have peppered some of his quotes below to cover their early days.
Dennis had already been working on his own as Z-Man, “I saved up to buy a 4-track and a drum machine. This friend of mine came back from America and I knew he had a keyboard, so I kind of badgered him into giving me a lend of it and that’s how I made the first tracks.” He had completed a sound engineering course and put up posters around town offering cheap demo recordings. Alan was the only person who answered and they became friends and allies and soon discovered they both shared an interest in making electronic music, “We did a lot of gigs together, Monomer and Unease. I just kind of got on with him. We started off with this idea, doing these tunes, kind of Loopish guitar things, patterns and notes repeating, layered over each other. We started making backing tracks for that and we thought they sounded really good, let’s make songs out of them. We were using a computer and a couple of synths at that stage with a drum machine, a delay pedal and a 4 track and that’s how we did our first album.”
Around this time they also formed Ultramack, with their friend and now manager of Decal, Paul Timoney (Timo). Initially this was to promote gigs of local bands, but later they would book overseas artists (as U:MACK) as well as becoming a record label. At this time there were three shows in particular that put Ultramack on the map for those who cared about guitar bands. They featured such groups as Sunbear, In Motion, Mexican Pets, Groundswell and Tucker Suite. Each show had a free tape with music by the bands on the bill and sometimes other studio stuff as well. This was how I first heard music from Z-Man, which was quite primitive and a long way from what Dennis would soon be doing with Decal. I mention this as it illustrates how serious they were and keen to support and document what was going on in the scene.
During this time they must have been recording what would turn out to be their debut album. Dennis knew I was a printer and one night at some gig or other I remember him asking me the ins and outs of what a printing company would require to produce the artwork for a CD. This was the first time I had heard that they were working on an album. (In case the video of ‘Excelsis’ below does not open in your device click here)
youtube
The album was either self-titled or used the catalogue number, Ultramack 004. I really liked it and I must say it still sounds good to me, almost 25 years later. Like a lot of other Indie Kid at this time, the only other contemporary electronic music I would have been familiar with was Aphex Twin, which this was nothing like. I guess what they were doing at this stage would be classified as electronica or, “electronica by default" as Alan O’Boyle put it in an interview with Kate Butler for Spannered in 2002. Surprisingly it has dated only a little in my opinion and not in a bad way either. While their equipment was very limited, in many ways I think this was a good thing, as the seven tracks are all very cohesive. The production is minimal by necessity but the tunes are catchy and strong. It doesn’t sound like an album made by people with a background in guitar bands to me, but perhaps the need to craft great songs is what they took from that. There are a few vocal samples from various sources but no singing, so it’s pretty much an instrumental and all electronic album.
According to my records, I must have missed the album’s launch gig (Decal’s first ever live show) in The Furnace venue but I remember buying it off Dennis one night around when it was released, in October 1994. They didn’t play live too often in the first year or so as far as I remember, the difficulty for electronic bands in those days was that they basically had to dismantle their studio to play live. The first time I got to see them play was supporting The Whipping Boy in November 1995 in Dublin’s Tivoli. By now the album would have been out a year and they had definitely created a word of mouth buzz around themselves. Their major coup was that one of the album’s tracks, ‘Excelsis’ (on video above), had been used for the theme tune for Ireland’s only alternative music TV show, No Disco. This must have given them great weekly exposure at the very least. Dennis explained to me that, “Donal Dineen (the show’s presenter) just heard that tune and really liked it. He got in touch with us and asked if he’d be able to use it as intro music and we said, yeah no problem. It was really simple, he did all the bureaucratic RTE red tape stuff and we just gave him the DAT.”
Not long after this they came to the attention of Andrew Weatherall and Nina Walsh, who ran the small Sabrettes label in London. In April 1996 they would release Decal’s Germ Rocket EP. This 12″ paired two tracks from the album, ‘Sense’ and ‘Poseidon’ with two new tracks, ‘Remember The O’Jays’ and ‘Sham’s Theme’. The latter had an amazing and mysterious (film?) sample, ‘No one of this world’, and while still electronica, they were a bit more dance-floor orientated that the album had been. This was a seriously strong EP but it kind of disappeared from what I could tell. If you thought putting a record out on a small English dance label would have been a step up for them, think again. I never even saw a copy of this for sale in Ireland (although it must have been shipped here) until I found a secondhand copy just a few years ago on a stall in Limerick’s Milk Market. A year or so after it was released I ended up tracking down a promo copy in the massive bargain basement racks of one of London’s Record and Tape Exchange shops. The final resting place for many a fine but unknown record!
In the run-out groove was an intriguing message written in Irish, ‘FUAIM IDIR DO CHLUASA’’, which translates roughly as the sound between your ears. This was balanced out nicely with the more typical and offhand message on the other side, ‘PEACE OUT - TIMO’. Neither Dennis or Alan had ever struck me as Gaeilgeoirs (Irish speakers), so it was unexpected that they would use the language in this way. I personally like to think they were making a statement that while on the surface each copy was the same, by the time it was heard, each person would be hearing something unique to them, to some degree.
They went on a UK tour with other Sabrettes’ artists to support it and it was around this time I felt that they were close to some kind of commercial breakthrough (how wrong I was!) and I interviewed Dennis for XL Music Magazine (archived here). On the day he also gave me a sampler tape of new and unreleased music (pic below), which included tracks with telling titles such as ‘Marshall Stack’ and ‘Rock’n’Roll’ (imagery they would return to in the future). The music on the tape was similar to the new tracks on the EP, but no lost classics. The same year they also had more of an electro style track, ‘80s Funky’, included on a various artist 12", 2nd Edition, on the UK label, Language. This again was quite hard to find and took another record buying trip to London for me to turn up a secondhand copy. At this time I remember hearing from them that Tony Thorpe, who ran the label, really pushed them to deliver a more instant track. Working with these labels wasn’t just a case of having them simply pick a track from a demo and putting it out as it was, that might only be the starting point of the process. The selected track would need to be tweaked and reworked over and over until it matched the label’s expectations and hopefully still coincide with what the group wanted. This quite rigorous approach must have helped them develop their writing and production and explain why a track like ‘80s Funky’ still sounds so good.
In early 1996 I saw them play opening for Cornershop in Dublin’s Mean Fiddler but it was a show in the Ormond Multi Media Centre (now the Morrison Hotel) in June of that year which was the first time I saw them play for a young rave type audience in a big venue. Ultramack were also promoting the show and they brought over Tony Thorpe to DJ and headline. This might be when they made the connection to his label. I remember being curious how the crowd would react and as I remember it I think they got them moving. In a way this event was a glimpse of something yet to come.
In 1997 they would release another one-off 12″ on a UK label, Leaf. Typically, this was a few years before Leaf was considered super cool. The single track, ‘Endgame’, was very dark but more surprisingly was drum’n’bass. The flipside was a remix by the drum’n’bass artist Klute. This was still early days for Decal and the mid 1990s were heady times for dance music and drum’n’bass was the hot new sound of the time. This isn’t an artistic criticism, but from a commercial or marketing point of view, Decal were all over the place genre-wise and this would only continue. When Dennis spoke with Kate Butler for an interview in Spannered in 2002 he admitted as much, "Before, we did so many different things it was hard for people to get a handle on us.” For the very clued in there was another intriguing run-out groove message on the ‘Endgame’ single that read, ‘DUBLIN PHUNK CITY 1999′, what this meant we were going to have to wait to find out. (Video link for ‘Zerostar’ here)
youtube
A name change to pursue a different sound would have been the thing to do and that same year Alan did just that for a one-off 12″ as Ajax Disco Spanner. This again was a drum’n’bass project, without Dennis but featuring Rohan Reilly of Dublin’s Bassbin club (later a label too). This came out on the very short lived label, Detox Artefacts UK, whose parent label was 4AD. This episode in the label’s history gets quickly dismissed in the 4AD book, Facing The Wrong Way by Martin Aston. I can remember Alan tipping me off that copies of the record were in Spindizzy and I managed to snap one up (still available on Discogs for less than a euro). It was a solid enough release but I never got too deeply into this sound myself. Listening to it now I’m struck that the second half of ‘Janet Jack’ sounds just like something off Decal’s first album, only with drum’n’bass beats. I guess this proves they did briefly forge a signature sound all of their own.
In September 1997, the UK electronic musician Scanner played in Dublin with The Wormholes, but earlier in the day he visited Decal’s studio and made a track with Dennis. This was filmed and shown late at night on Irish TV as ‘The Honest Voyeur’. It gives a glimpse inside Decal’s studio, which was Alan’s one time bedroom in a small terraced house in the suburb of Phibsboro. This was the unlikely location where all the magic happened, everything up to at least 2002 would be recorded there. There was also another one off track on the Zip Up Your Boots For The Showbands (1996) compilation, 'Hard Days Work’. Some of these one-off tracks (too many over their career to individually mention in this piece) were sometimes used as experiments but some gave signposts to what would be coming next. In 1997, possibly sparked by the interest around this compilation (many of the groups on it are featured), there was a No Disco feature on Ireland’s independent music scene and Decal are interviewed a number of times in it. This gives you a good indication of how they were feeling about music at this time as well as their plans for the future. It’s currently the only place you can see a portion of their video for ‘Excelsis’ as well.
In another example of them championing others, in 1996 they had come across an electronic solo artist, Anodyne aka Colin Cloughley. In a beautifully random and serendipitous way, his brother happened to work in the same CD pressing plant where Decal’s first album was manufactured and he tipped him off to send these fellow electronic artists a demo. Colin was just 16 at this time and they brought him to their studio to compile and complete his now acclaimed debut album. Anodyne is still releasing records to this day.
In November 1997 they returned to their own label, now abbreviated to U:MACK, and released the Lo-Lite album The launch (with Anodyne in support) was held at Dublin’s Temple Bar Music Centre, which I remember being packed (you got the CD once you paid in). Expectations were high this time around and the album is really a halfway house between electronica and dance. Its nine tracks had been recorded over a year since September 1996 and this time around sounded more like a collection of tracks than their much more cohesive debut. While I liked it at the time, listening back to it now, only about half the tracks are amazing and can still stand up and for me these are amongst Decal’s best work. The remainder just don’t do much for me and have dated badly for some reason and sound like they were over reaching themselves or something. The tunes are there but the tracks just aren’t working overall. In fact they would execute these more uptempo dance-floor ideas much more effectively in the future.
With a track like ‘Zerostar’ (video above) however, they really came up with the goods, so dreamy and sublime. It also just predates the popularly of this sound via Boards of Canada’s Music Has The Right To Children (1998) the following year (although BOC would have already developed this sound by now). There’s something to be said for just experimenting with different genres and styles if you luck out every now and then and catch a glimpse of the future like this. At this time MTV were still playing music videos and had just one channel in Europe and Decal had a lot of success in getting their early videos played there. Dennis told me about the first video for ‘Excelsis’, “Its been on MTV, the Party Zone and the Chill Out Zone, for a week or two it was even play-listed in the evenings.” This would be the same for the similarly self-produced video for ‘Zerostar’ as well. Whether all this exposure translated into sales is unknown, going partly by a comment left on YouTube, there was a large but passive audience who ‘loved obscure electronica videos from Party/Chill Out Zone’, but might never follow up this interest. In these pre-Internet days, distribution was key and if those viewers couldn’t buy your record in their local record shop, then they were not going to find you. Decal, like every other unsigned band, were also broke, so promoting and marketing themselves was still an expensive thing to do. One of the more affordable avenues open to them at this time was Dublin’s burgeoning pirate radio scene, many of which were dance music stations, like Power FM (Decal had a show there for a time as well). In fact, during the mid 90s, there were two CDs in the Power FM studio, one of which was their first album. So there was a 50/50 chance the last DJ would put it into the CD player to play overnight. So a lot of people would have got to know the album because of that (if they knew who the artist was!). (link for ‘Phunk City’ video here)
youtube
‘Phunk City’ (video below) was great too, truly funky and very loose. Its freaky video (spot the Dublin locations) also got some plays on MTV. So finally we were getting to hear what “Phunk City” was all about, or were we? ‘Camouflage’ is a tasty, scratchy vinyl sampling, chilled out track in a similar template to ‘Zerostar’. The final track, ‘Iona’, is amazing, a real signpost for when they would be at their most experimental while still remaining tuneful. The album at least was full of signposts to the future and catches them moving forward. It’s worth pointing out that all of this pulling in different directions and working in different genres was coming from both of them. It would be way too simple to say that Alan was the dance-floor guy and Dennis was the experimental one. The key thing was that they were both as dance-floor orientated and experimental as each other and this combination is what made them work so well.
Even though Decal and Ultramack had an early website, this was still just before most people had internet access and if they did they would not yet have had broadband to facilitate fast downloads. Decal were part of a generation of groups when things were changing very quickly in the music industry and these effects would have been starting to happen right about when Lo-Lite was released. If Decal had started ten years later they may have had to really struggle to get noticed amongst all the free downloads of varying quality and an outlet like MTV (before it digitally splintered) or even as it would turn out, No Disco, would certainly not have existed for them.
A few months after Lo-Lite, Decal released a split 12″ single with Deep Burial (who also released an excellent album on U:MACK in 1998, Blood Samples). Each band had two tracks aside and Decal again chose to highlight ‘Phunk City’ from the album but re-titled it, ‘Dublin Phunk City 1999′. They also gave us another new dance-floor friendly track, ‘Do You Read Me?’, to signal what was about to happen next.
The second and final part of Decal’s story can be read here.

Ravnedanssamtalen #1: Irene Vesterhus Theisen, Tone Martine Kittelsen and Julie Rasmussen
About criticism and curating as a collaborative activity. Diana Damian Martin and Sergio Lo Gatto, from the collective of critics named Writingshop//Critics in Conversation, talk with Irene, Tone Martine and Julie from RAVNEDANS about curating together and organizing the festival. The conversation took place at Aladdin on the 10th of July, at 16.00. Here are notes taken during the conversation, by Nina H. J. Skogli.
Diana: Can you tell us how you work together to curate as a group? But first an introduction of what you do outside Ravnedans.
Tone: I work as a freelance dancer in Oslo, and I also make my own pieces. The two last years I have had the responsibility as a producer for the festival Ravnedans.
Julie: I live in Copenhagen, freelancing with some of my own stuff and with other shows. And I am also organizing a festival in Denmark called Nordlys.
Irene: I am mainly a dancer. Freelancing. And also curating and styreleder at Scenekunst Sør were we are working to build a professional environment for dance and theatre in Kristiansand.
We are four people doing Ravnedans. Maren is working in Shanghai and could not be with us this year.
Sergio: How did Ravnedans start?
J: Over a cup of coffee. We wanted to do something in our hometown. Everybody had moved to other cities, but we wanted to do something at home. We started making smaller pieces in Ravnedalen. And the first time the reception was so good so we decided to continue.
D: And can you tell us a bit about how you curate the festival?
I: We were not aware that we were “curating” until recently. To speak of it as curating, and be aware of that is what we were doing. We decide the artistic program with equal responsibility.
D: How is it now compared to when you started it with friends seven years ago?
J: Now we ask other people to help pus choose and decide the applications from our open call. We have an open call every year. But we also make proposals to each other outside the open call.
T: We have similar taste, but with some differences. We are all quite open and are prepared to take some risks. There are always risks, with having performances that we haven’t seen live, only videotapes.
J: We sometimes have heated and emotional discussions from watching the tapes or trying to convince each other about a piece.
I: Yes, we fight for our stuff. We disagree. And make a game out of trying to convince each other.
D: But this is also about trust?
I: Yes. And we are able to speak openly with each other.
S: Working as a collective we (writingshop) feed each other with ideas. What would be the difference if you were to do the curating and the festival alone?
T: I would never do it alone, because it happened together. It started together in a group.
I: And I don’t know if I find it interesting to do it alone.
S: Yeah thats it.
J: It’s also about sharing performances with the rest of the group. Wanting to share it.
I: Ravnedans also cooperates with others in Kristiansand.
Now we have organized it so that Tone is the head of the festival doing the big applications. And we all have different tasks.
S: Some times you see a performance that is perfect in the festival. How do you put yourself in the role as a spectator. Or what do you feel makes a performance perfect for Kristiansand?
T: We started the first years with presenting things that we thought people in Kristiansand could like and enjoy. But then we changed the perspective. My grandma saw a very slow piece some years ago, and she still talks about it. So then we thought about not to underestimate the audience. And challenge them instead.
I: We learned a lot from that. When it comes to the program there are often some connections. We start with some shows that we really want to come to Ravnedans, and then continue to build a program with good pieces. And our audience is quite broad. The range of people is big. So we present different work and good pieces.
D: Do you feel you are shaping a community of dance here, and reshape the perception of contemporary dance in Kristiansand?
I: I feel we have done this. But now ”it has been done”, and now we bring what we like and is good. The program in Ravnedalen used to be quite friendly to educate the audience, but we don’t do that so much anymore. Like we said, we don’t want to underestimate the audience.
T: It is important to present a program that everyone can connect to, not only the dance community. And that’s a big motivation for me. And especially for the site-specific performances in Ravnedalen we see a lot of local people.
I: And we try to keep the will to change the festival. To be able to change it.
D: The relationship between you as a body and the festival is very strong. Do you for example want somebody to take over at one point, to hand it on?
T: We are in a good flow now, but I am open for the possibility that it will end at one point. But I love the festival so much.
J: It has become something that we are feeding. It has become something. The festival is a child in a sense.
T: He is 8 now.
J: HE?
I: Every year we try to make the program and the festival a bit smaller to have control. But we don’t manage that. It always gets bigger. But how it is going to develop? I had this idea that it was growing with us as people and artists. But maybe this will change in the future, if we want to expand with more people or something like that.
We are open for ideas and input on how to change the festival. And develop it.
D: Are you curators doing a festival or are the result of your collaboration the festival?
I: We have tried different things. But our collaboration is very natural. We also started with dancing ourselves. So the festival was very tied up to the four of us. But then we felt the need to distance us a bit. And not perform ourselves. But then we started to get complaints about that we were not performing.
J: But we enjoy to perform in other peoples pieces.
I: We always invite someone we don’t know. And also want to invite works that give possibility for many people. And this is very strong for us. And since I know this, that this is Ravnedans, I am not that scared of also performing myself.
T: I think with the new generation of young festivals starting, this is more normal and accepted.

Song of the Day: January 19, 2017
Jeff Buckley, “Night Flight” (Led Zeppelin cover)
“Hi, my name is Corey, and I’m a music obsessive.”
“Hi, Corey.” (P.S.: it’s entirely likely that the boys on this board fall into this category too).
I’ll find myself on a jag with a particular artist and I sit down at that table and eat until I can barely push myself away -- hits, albums, deep cuts, b-sides, live boots, covers, etc. And then move on to the next (not always connected) obsession. And so I find myself drifting back into a Jeff Buckley phase of late. There are many, many reasons -- but perhaps the best way to get to the bottom of it all is through a story. The story of my first week living in New York City after I moved there in the summer of 1993.
(What I’m about to tell you is all true -- it just sounds super implausible so bear with me as this tale takes a little telling).
My best friend from college was living on the Upper West Side circa 1993; it wasn’t all baby strollers and upscale cafes yet (although Zabar’s was still very much the center of our little ‘hood, you purists will be pleased to note). He and some other Oregon expatriate friends were kind enough to invite me to a “welcome dinner” at a place in the LES (it hadn’t been rebranded the East Village quite yet) called Princess Pamela’s -- sadly, it’s no longer there but it was a down-at-the-heels soul food place just off the Bowery in an old railroad apartment run by a capricious crank named Pamela, who essentially decided whether she wanted to serve you that night or not. On the night in question, we walked to the restaurant from my friend’s apartment and passed a crime scene (body under a sheet with police tape around it; turned out some kid had jumped from a roof earlier that night) and then arrived at Pamela’s only to find that she had “no food left to serve.” So we walked to the green grocer next door; bought items from a list Pamela had provided us (no joke, with our own money), and then brought them back to the restaurant, where her short order cook fixed us something along the lines of short ribs and collard greens and then charged us again for the food at her menu price. (The same menu that said “We got chicken, we got ribs, whatchu want?”) Welcome to New York.
We then walked from Princess Pamela’s to a little cafe in the neighborhood called Sin-e’ -- it wasn’t much to look at, like most of the dumps in and around the Bowery. It was a tiny room with no booze (which didn’t really do much for us at that point although I vaguely remember drinking some Rolling Rocks that night), just coffee, tea, pastries and some tables scattered around with a clearing at the front of the room that served as a “stage.” The musical entertainment that night was a guy I’d never heard of before named Jeff Buckley -- he was a funny kid, a little wired with a weird sense of humor, mixing originals with covers (which were crazy eclectic -- the Smiths, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan). What you see here is basically what we saw that night, only Jeff’s hair was shorter. He could play the shit out of the guitar (I’m not a particularly great guitarist but I know one when I see/hear one), was clearly uncomfortable with even the nascent aspects of celebrity culture that were present (e.g., cameras, long before smartphones) but more than anything else what blew my mind was dude’s voice -- I felt like I’d heard it somewhere before but I had never seen or met ANYONE (Elliott Smith included) who could do the singer/songwriter thing amplified and scale the heights of both Jimmy Page’s playing and Robert Plant’s singing. AT THE SAME TIME IN THE SAME SONG. Plus, what were all these beautiful, model-looking women doing at this crappy little cafe in the middle of one of the worst drug/prostitution/crime neighborhoods in the City? The whole thing was kind of baffling and my friends acted like it was nbd -- it’s NYC, Holmes, this shit happens all the time. You walk into a not-even-dive-bar and some dude with a voice like a choirboy is singing obscure Zep covers to a couple dozen bored-looking people on a random school night. (As it happens, Buckley lived just a few blocks down the street and the magically reverbed Tele he played that night wasn’t even his... he’d just borrowed it for the residency).
We left. I was kinda floored, more than a little buzzed. We stopped at some other dive for ridiculously strong whiskey drinks and then I cabbed it home to the UWS -- the cab I was in lost a wheel/tire somewhere in midtown and I had to hoof it the rest of the way back from there, really late, and through a couple of sketchy streets (Amsterdam and the 60s was no joke back in the day, y’all). This is my life, man. I live in the Apple now. And I can see something like this ANY NIGHT, IT IS POSSIBLE.
It was only much later (after Grace was released) that I made the family connection back to the Tim Buckley albums like Happy/Sad and Goodbye and Hello that my dad had loved so much, he had told me stories about seeing that guy at the Troubadour way back in the day and I marveled at the DNA trickery that allowed Tim’s heavenly voice to somehow magically materialize a generation later in the form of his distant/estranged son, living like a bum on the Bowery and playing for tips in a cafe you wouldn’t have recognized then or now (I think it’s another Irish bar called “Bua,” which is Gaelic for victory -- whereas Sin-e’ essentially meant “that’s it!”).
This song totally takes me back to that night, to a pre-fame, very much ALIVE Jeff Buckley, who could goof on a deep Zep track by giving it a funky Sly & the Family Stone intro, talk about a time when he was playing it every night as being transported back to “two months ago, in a golden age,” and a New York City that essentially doesn’t exist anymore: a lot grubbier, a little more dangerous. (Ironically, Physical Graffiti -- the album from which this song is taken -- was the first album Buckley ever owned, and its cover photo is a St Mark’s Place block just a few short steps from where I saw him that night). It felt like home for a couple of years and so that is why I obsess over Jeff’s music today. It feels like him taking me on a guided tour of my record collection from the comfy, beaten-up confines of my tiny NYC living room. And then I miss him. (CdB)

Learn the different breeding methods for Koi reproduction
I’ll give you immediate access to all of the materials right away.
I am completely confident that you’ll love everything.
If…on the off chance you don’t – no problem…I’ll gladly refund your money. If within 60 days from the receipt of your package you’re not totally in love, simply send me an email with your receipt and I’ll promptly process your refund. It’s that simple.
That being said, I mean it very nicely when I ask that if you don’t have the intention of going through and taking action, please don’t order. I know the power of the material and it would just be a waste of your time and mine if you don’t even intend on reading it, agreed?
If you’re the type of person to read it and review it as well as take action to make your dreams come true faster than you ever dreamed possible – I can’t wait to send you your guides.

Koi Farm Guide

Learn the different breeding methods for Koi reproduction
So what does The Guide that has All of the Information YOU NEED in One Place cost?
