i like that mdzs is actually not a tragedy. a tragedy would have ended at wei wuxian’s first life with no one but the antagonists getting some semblance of an happily ever after. but mdzs is unique because it gives a chance of healing and growth after the tragedy, after the heartbreak, after the soul-crushing grief. if wei wuxian had never come back to life, almost every character would have been worse off. jin ling would continue to be an angry teenager who’d become an angry adult while having authority and power he wouldn’t be able to handle. jiang cheng’s thirst for revenge would remain and worsen and become uglier and many more would fall victim to his animosity against perceived demonic cultivators. lan wangji’s mourning wouldn’t ever end. sizhui wouldn’t reunite with the man who’d he once thought of as a father and he wouldn’t reunite with his uncle and he maybe wouldn’t even learn of his true past until much much later. jgy wouldn’t be as easily exposed and lan xichen would remain blind to the wrongdoings of his sworn brother. maybe nie huaisang would still find his vengeance but it would have to be another way, a messier way. in general, the resentment of many people would continue to fester––there would be no reality checks for the cultivation clans as they did during the second siege (not that their collective shitty behaviour was corrected, but atleast there was some reckoning involved.) the history would still be the winner’s and the wronged parties would be continued to be vilified. but wei wuxian does come back and that kickstarts every single character’s journey once again. his resurrection throws a wrench into the complacency of tragedy and makes the characters hope again. i like mdzs because it is about second chances. because it doesn’t succumb to the absolute narrative of ‘why do good people always suffer?’ by giving the protagonists an ending that is not perfect but an ending that is rewarding, despite everything. i like mdzs because it is not trying to sell you a tragedy and deliberately play with your emotions but a story about hope, about betterment, about renewal. the second chance may seem like the one wei wuxian got, but in truth it is a second chance for every single character and some rightfully learn to be better and get better endings while some stick to their ways and for them, even a third or fourth chance wouldn’t be enough. i like mdzs because it tells you that yes, tragedies happen and yes they are allowed to deeply affect you but you can move on some day and you can find happiness again and you can live your life as if you were reborn, even if it’s just metaphorically.

While I think the moment in cql where Meng Yao– still bleeding from a stab wound in his chest btw– realizes Lan Xichen is in danger and decides to save the man who was so kind to him in cloud recesses is cute and all, nothing will ever beat the book for me. Little bookkeeper civilian Meng Yao, who has not had a serious chance to make his dreams of being a cultivator come true in fucking years, out of nowhere gets the fucking sect leader of Gusu Lan dropped right in his lap?
It's such a great example of Meng Yao's multilayered motivations to me. Because is civilian Meng Yao thinking of all the ways he can use this? Of the fact that having a great sect leader in his debt is the best thing that could happen to him? Duh. Obviously.
Is he very purposeful about appearing to Lan Xichen as a kind young man full of untapped potential, brave and willing to put his life on the line even though he really doesn't know so much about about cultivators, no sir, except a little he picked up here and there, because you see his father– 👉👈 Of course he is!
But the way through which he does that is... by actually saving Lan Xichen's life, at no doubt significant personal risk. The way he makes Lan Xichen believe he's kind and selfless is by... being kind and selfless. Just because he's doing it on purpose doesn't mean he's not doing it.
Is it lying if you want people to think you're nice and so you're nice to them? Isn't that just called being nice? Yes, he is very purposeful about how he appears to people, and very carefully crafts an image based on what he wants them to think of him, but most of the time he does that simply by... actually being the kind of person he wants to appear as. He still did the kind things he did, regardless of his motivations for doing them.
#mdzs#mdzs meta#meng yao#jin guangyao#lan xichen#rs: i wish it could've been you#I think for a guy like nmj the reason this 'fakeness' is scary is because it makes him unpredictable#meng yao COULD be nice to you because he wants you to think well of him and the best way to do that is simply being nice.#OR he could be planning to kill you later. you have no way of knowing which one it is.#but like... the existence of the latter– while obviously very troubling!– doesn't really make the former manipulation in and of itself#but both people in universe and the fandom frustratingly often take it as such#'i want this person to like me so i'm gonna be nice to them' <- this is not manipulation. this is just interacting with people.#anyway this dual motivation probably also applies to show meng yao. who is scrambling to find something else now that he's been banished.#but the reason the novel grips me so much is little civilian a-yao doesn't even *know* lan xichen yet.#it's the journey of this at first being very inpersonal- both as an opportunity and as a heroic act#(the impression he's giving being that he saved a stranger because he's just that kind of person 😇)#and over the course of their time spent hiding together becomes... very very personal.#meng yao coming in with a very general plan that he could charm any kind of person with and slowly adjusting it to fit lxc#but how is that so different from just... getting to know a person and realizing what kind of relationship you want to have with them?#I also just think it's cute to have a-yao get bonked over the head with the realization that this guy is so fucking NICE what the FUCK?#no way he's this lucky. good shit doesn't *happen* to him where's the catch with this guy??? hello???#lucky of course both on a personal level and for his practical goals. i loveeee both sides of a-yao's brain screaming in tandem

Sorry about your laptop 😭 again 😭
Ok for the ask game! Suyao’s first meeting, since it’s only referenced in the text and we don’t get to see it 👀
As Su Minshan was leaving the night hunt, he couldn't help but feel bitter and resentful. Even though he himself had performed quite decently compared to other participants, only a couple of his disciples had managed to score a kill at all, bringing the sect's total down to truly abysmal numbers. And he couldn't even blame them for that; as the founder of a minor sect with no name in the cultivation world he had no promising young talents banging on his doors begging to be let in, and the handful of boys and girls he'd picked from various little towns around Moling during the war couldn't possibly compare to the disciples of well-established sects with years of training under their belts.
It was with these thoughts weighing heavily on his mind that he ran into someone. The man was dressed in a plain Jin disciple uniform, with only the vermillion dot on his brow vaguely marking him as someone of importance, and currently in the middle of arranging clean up.
As Su Minshan mumbled an apology, still preoccupied with his own thoughts, the man's placid smile turned a touch warmer.
"No need to feel bad about your disciples' showing, Sect Leader Su," he said encouragingly. "Quite a few of them showed a lot of potential tonight, with a few more years' training they'll surely become fine cultivators rivaling those of the four great sects. Sect Leader Su has quite an eye for talent."
Su Minshan blinked and bowed to the stranger, thanking him for the kind words, and it was only after the man bowed in return and left, followed by a group of Jin servants, that it finally hit him.
The venerable Lianfang-zun of the Jin sect, the war hero Jin Guangyao who had single-handedly slain Wen Ruohan, had just praised him in full view of assorted cultivators from multiple well-established sects.

@masqce / guangyao and jin ling event starter
Tumblr media
he didn't know where he had wandered off too, having just picked a direction in the building to disappear off too, forcing himself to keep going until he was sure no one had followed. it was probably some area he wasn't supposed to be, or at least particularly far out, considering he had somehow ran into his uncle in the process. jin ling didn't even have the energy to start his usual argument with jin guangyao, things about memories and murder a distant thought right now. "i'll find my way out of here soon i just need ten minutes without having to talk to my advisor." and the man would certainly corner jin ling again the moment he was given the chance.

@masqce for Jin Guangyao for the mini event
"All right, where are we hitting up first?" Hua Cheng asks, dressed up as a civilian. Normally guards are close by, behind the other and hiding in the shadows, but Hua Cheng tends to hide in plain sight so he's right next to the other as a normal person

I cannot stress enough how MINOR of a petpeeve this is and how this is an interpretation that i'm comfortable with other people having even if i personally do not but I've noticed in a lot of 3zun fics, if jgy is holding smth back- generally his own feelings because his natural reaction to conflict is to make it Go Away and so if his emotional needs are the potential source conflict he will simply Not Look At Them.- That between nielan Xichen is the one who's worried and presses for comunication and Mingjue is like "Meng Yao is an adult if there was a problem he'd say so."
And I get why this is done, because nieyao's communication is generally atrocious and Xichen is the Gentle One who'd want to make sure a-yao is okay. So I get it. But. Canonically. The person going "I know a-yao, we trust each other, I don't need to ask him, he'll tell me on his own terms." is Lan Xichen and the one going "If Meng Yao doesn't want me to know something he WILL hide it from me and i'll have no idea because he's just that good at lying" is Nie Mingjue. And in a healthier nieyao dynamic, as these fics work under, that knowledge would not lead to automatic distrust but rather a desire to check in, to go: please remember that I value your honesty more than whatever you think you would burden me with by telling me what's going on.
Xichen also wants honesty and open communication ofc but his reaction to conflict is also to make it go away as fast as possible and he feels like saying it constantly feels accusatory so he wouldn't. If he asks if something is ok and a-yao smiles and goes of course er-ge checking again if it's really okay would be implying he was lying the first time!! He's showing his trust in him!! This is really refreshing if you're constantly assumed to be untrustworthy and meng yao appreciates it so much and it works really well 95% of the time but when it doesn't? Oh boy.

"guangyao." zixuan calls, sure the man he'd seen across the room is his brother. "it's good to see you." he starts, determined to have a pleasant conversation with the younger man. "are you having a good time?"

I stan a lot of villains but I’ve possibly never been so of two completely different minds about a villain like JGY and it’s wild
I remain fascinated by the irony that the cut off point for me was when he killed his nasty father literally everyone in the fandom wanted to painfully die
Like JGY before that? Neat if infuriating, compelling to read about, will devour any fic exploring what could have been
JGY after that? uhhh what the fuck what the fuck go away how dare you you are literally exactly like your father??? like wtf would your mom say about this dude? you literally used those women like objects and then got rid of them?? OKAY. okay. will literally read no fic about him after this point anymore lmao
idk I think my interests are wild sometimes. also occasionally I will read people defending him and I’m like, “yeah I agree almost everyone else was awful too and let’s be real most of them would have also been quick to murder anyone disrespecting their mom like that. I would have but also... but also he went off the deep end and had to go down sorry bye. and it’s extra disappointing he’d use sex workers as mere disposable tools for his revenge while (rightly) building his mom a whole fucking temple“
do I have a point??? no but thoughts.
