So its Pride Month! And as a proud member of the alphabet mafia I wanna give my opinion on all the Danganronpa characters' sexualities! So let's go, starting with THH!

Trigger Happy Havoc

Makoto Naegi- Pansexual. I'm under the belief all protags are Pan. Transgender(ftm). So I have this whole hc that the reason his door was jammed was that the lock was quickly removed when they found out SHE was actually a HE and I just like the hc lol.

Sayaka Maizono- Straight. I just think she has a big thing for Makoto, but other than that she cares for her career more than a relationship.

Leon Kuwata- Bisexual, heavy female leaning. I ship him with Hiro, but honestly this fucker would probably take forever to admit he likes guys.

Chihiro Fukisaki- Gay. Dont really have a reasoning. Just my opinion lol

Mondo Oowada- Bisexual. He mentions trying to confess to girls, but come on. This guy is fruity for Taka.

Kiyotaka Ishimaru- Gay. This dude meanwhile is just straight homo. He's probably closeted in fear it would bring shame to his family name again.

Kaede Akamatsu- Pansexual. She was the protagonist first, so the rule still applies lol. But even beyond that it just fits her. Hard to explain, it just seems like it works.

Ryoma Hoshi- Straight, Asexual. I know on my ship list I said I shipped him with Gonta, but theres a reason that ship was so low. I heavily think Ryoma is straight. It's just the vibe I get from him. Maybe hes bi curious, but idk. As for the ace bit, it's really dark. I hc it's because of the trauma he endured during prison.

Kirumi Tojo- Lesbian. Idk I look at her and I think "Lesbian power. Powerful wlw moments." Dont ask me my brain just does things.

Angie Yonaga- Pansexual. She always seemed like she was flirting with Himiko and lowkey Tenko, and in the FTEs she straight up wants to get married to Shuichi so like....I dunno what you want me to say.

Tenko Chabashira- Lesbian. Literally no explanation needed.

Korekiyo Shinguji- Pansexual. Putting aside the....obvious....he finds all of humanity beautiful, so he most likely doesnt have a preference when it comes to choosing a partner. Just like with Mukuro we pretend that entire plotline never happened.

Miu Iruma- Pansexual. I see her as pretty open to everyone....Yeah. That's all I got.

Gonta Gokuharu- Bi-curious. Honestly I dont think Gonta knows what he is himself. He probably hasnt given it too much thought, if hes given it any. The best I can think of is bi-curious, assuming hes currently exploring his sexuality.

Today was the day! He's going to do this!

Teruteru Hanamura, the Ultimate Cook, was going to tell his crush he loves them! And this time he refuses to wuss out.

Teruteru strolled through the halls of Hope's Peak, a cake in his hands and a bouquet of roses poking out of his bag. He wasn't as great a baker as he is a cook, but after weeks of perfecting the recipe, he was confident that (Y/n) would love it. The words "Wanna go on a date?" were delicately written on the top and covered in edible glitter to make the question as obvious as possible.

He hummed as he reached his classroom. Making sure the cake wasn't damaged in the slightest, he went to open the door, ignoring the sound of the school bell. "Good morning, everyone!"

"Good morning, Teruteru. What's the occasion?" Princess Sonia questioned him as she noticed the cake and flowers the short man held.

"Today is the day, your highness!" He beamed as he showed her the cake. "I'm finally going to ask the sweet (Y/n) on a date!"

Sonia clasped her hands together, a smile taking over her features. "Oh Teruteru, that's wonderful!"

"You're not going to wuss out this time, are you?" Mahiru questioned as she walked up to the two chatting friends, placing her hands on her hips. "Last time you tried, you ended up screaming "Taylor Swift" in their face and running away."

Teruteru chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his neck. "N-not one of my best moments, I'll admit. But today will be different! I declare it! After all, I've worked on this cake for weeks now and I know they'll-"

"S-so sorry for being late! I-"

Teruteru yelped as someone crashed into him from behind, knocking them both to the ground.

"Ah! Are the two of you alright?" Teruteru could hear Sonia's voice as he groaned in pain. He turned his head to see a very, very red (Y/n). "Gyah! Sorry, Teruteru!" They quickly picked themselves up, dusting off their clothes as Teruteru stood back up.

"No worries, (Y/n), it was an accident," Teruteru reassured as he picked up his fallen hat. "Ah!" Sonia gasped. "Teruteru, the cake!"

Teruteru could feel a chill run down his spine. He examined the front of his clothes, only to find it covered in frosting and cake. The cake itself was a mess, crushed and almost flattened. Even the words were unreadable, the frosting and edible glitter smeared.

"Oh no! Teru, I am so so sorry!" (Y/n) cried when they realized what they had done. Tears began to form at the corners of their eyes.

Teruteru sighed. "Now, now. No need to apologize, it was just a cake. " He picked up the ruined cake off the floor. "Besides, it's still edible, even if it can no longer be used for its original purpose." He muttered the last part under his breath.

"Sooo whatcha gonna do with that cake there, Teru?" Akane came out of nowhere, a drop of drool forming at the end of her mouth. Sighing, Teruteru handed her the ruined cake. At least someone would be able to enjoy it.

"If you'll excuse me, I have to go change." The ultimate cook briskly made his way out of the classroom, keeping his head down to keep his embarrassed blush hidden.

Well, the cake idea didn't work. But that wasn't going to stop Teruteru!

He still had the flowers, which had somehow survived the incident that morning. He watched as the sweet (Y/n) came out of the school gym, red from exercise and on edge as they normally were. Clearing his throat, he walked up to them, words already forming in his head.

"Good afternoon, my sweet (Y/n)!"

(Y/n) jumped in surprise, but relaxed as soon as they noticed the ultimate cook walking up to them. "Good afternoon, Teruteru. What brings you here?" They questioned as they eyed the roses he held in his hands.

"Well you see, I was hoping to ask you if you'd like to hang out after school today. You see, a new bakery opened up nearby and I was hoping that-"

"O-oh, I'm sorry, Teruteru. Ibuki, Chiaki, and I already have plans."

A cold feeling washed over Teruteru as his smile dropped. "Oh, I see."

"Gyah! You hate me now, don't you!?" (Y/n) shouted. They clasped their hands together as tears pricked at their eyes. "P-please forgive me!"

"Now, now. I don't hate you, sugar." Teruteru dropped the flowers as he took their hands in his own, feeling the glares from judging students nearby. "You have nothing to apologize for. I, uh-" He picked up the dropped flowers and shoved them into (Y/n)'s shaking hands. "Here, please accept these as an apology for making you think such a thing."

(Y/n) blinked away the tears as they examined the flower. "But Teru, these are lovely. Are you sure I can have them?"

"Of course! Now then, how about we join everyone else for lunch back in the classroom?" Teruteru relaxed as the other smiled shyly at him, nodding.

"You still haven't asked them?" Mahiru raised a brow as he scrubbed away at the chalkboard. It was cleaning time, which meant she and Teruteru were alone as they cleaned and organized the classroom.

"I tried, alright?" Teruteru sighed exasperatedly as he straighten one of the desks. "Things just don't want to go my way."

Mahiru rolled her eyes and turned to the other, "You know, if I didn't know any better, I'd think you weren't trying hard enough!"

Teruteru felt himself become tense. "And just what is that supposed to mean?" He asked the redhead, trying to keep his temper to a minimum.

"You're always saying "today is the day", yet you don't go through with your plans half the time, and when you do attempt one, you either back out last second or make (Y/n) nervous!"

"It isn't my fault!" Teruteru shouted at her. "(Y/n) is the best person I've ever met. They care more about others than they do themselves, they always smile despite being on the verge of crying, they can cheer anyone up with just a word, they... they..."

Teruteru dragged off as he stared at the door. Confused, Mahiru turned around to see what had stopped him so abruptly.

Standing at the door with a very, very blushy face, was (Y/n) themself.

The air in the room suddenly got a bit heavy as Teruteru realized they must have heard everything. "Uh..."

Mahiru smiled. "I'll just leave the two of you alone." She ducked out of the class pass (Y/n), sending them a quick wink.

The two classmates stared at each other, neither quite sure what to say.

Teruteru was the first to break the silence, clearing his throat as he pulled out his comb. "Ahaha. I s-suppose it'd be silly of me to ask you if you heard what I said." He chuckled as he shakingly fixed his hair.

"Uh..." (Y/n) was trying to find the right words, the heat in their cheeks distracting them.

"If you don't feel the same, I understand completely," Teruteru reassured them, trying to keep his voice as clear as possible. "S-someone as amazing as you probably prefers someone bet-"

"I-I like you too, Teruteru!"

"...huh?" Was all Teruteru could say. (Y/n)'s blush slightly reddened as they stared down at their shoes. "I... I like you too. I've liked you for a while now, actually. But, I sorta figured you'd prefer someone who could keep up with you or at least someone who isn't on the verge of a freakout. Or someone who overthinks things. Or someone who-"

(Y/n) bit their lip. "I honestly didn't think you'd like me back."

Teruteru absorbed every word. He almost couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"W-well then..." Teruteru cleared his throat.

Teruteru placed his hand against his chest, sighing a breath of relief as (y/n) looks up at him.

"I do have to say I'm shocked sugar. I wasn't expecting today of all days to be the day you found out. And all this time..."

He looked up at (Y/n) and smiles, walking closer to them. He extends his open hand out, and waits for a moment. "Any day is better than never, and that bakery isn't going anywhere. Do you..."

(Y/n) takes his hand and in a nervous heap hugs him.

"S-sure!" (Y/n) spoke, nodding happily as Teruteru pats their back.

"This time, don't get any cake on me." He teased, smiling as a blush formed on (Y/n)’s cheeks.

With a final good-bye, Teruteru watched as they left the classroom. A warm feeling spread through his stomach as he placed his hands on his hips.

Which wasn't saying a lot, since you got to see him like this quite a bit, but this was still different when he messed up making a dish (which was caused by Hiyoko's mischiefs) or someone had a false guess about his ingredients. You and Teruteru were on your way to visit his mother, since he thought that it was finally time for his mom to meet his "future wife". He sure was happy as hell, and kind of smug, even. But you understood how much it meant for this little guy. So you held his hand tightly, giving him a reassuring smile, even though you too were nervous about meeting your future mother-in-law. Soon enough, the train has stopped and you two got off of it. You couldn't help but give occasional glances to your boyfriend, who seemed geniuenly happy yet really, really nervous. You remember him mentioning something about how "the next time he visited his mother he would bring his future wife too", and it made your heart melt. You couldn't help smiling, you knew he considered you as his future spouse but it still made you happy whenever you remembered his words. It was winter, so the cold air was refreshing to you. It made you think of beginnings, with the freshly fallen snow crunching under your feet, the cold air keeping you fully awake and of course, with your relationship which will get even more serious once you see your boyfriend's mother who is clearly very dear to him. Things were going all smooth, until... "So when are you two getting married?" The unexpected question- but well, was it really unexpected when he literally introduced you as his future spouse? "O-oh... I think we would like to... Graduate first," you said, a bit flustered. Byakuya, Teruteru, & Korekiyo x Blackened! S/O Headcanons

Byakuya Togami

He’s usually such a logical person, someone who wouldn’t let his feelings sway his rational perception of truth and reality. But when Makoto declares you the culprit–and he hasn’t been wrong yet–all Byakuya can think is that no, there’s no way you’re the killer, Makoto must have finally broken his lucky guessing streak, even though he knows that Makoto’s deductions aren’t just guesses.

But Makoto’s logic is airtight, and no matter what, Byakuya can’t find a point to refute him on. He remains silent for the rest of trial, and, finding no other choice, he votes you as the blackened.

When Monokuma announces their decision to elect you as the blackened, Byakuya can hardly believe his ears. You? His sweet s/o, whom, despite his insistence on not trusting others in this deadly game, had managed to put full faith in? Impossible. But it was true.

He feels betrayed. But he also understands that in this game, people do what they think they have to do, and you saw no other way out. He doesn’t condone your actions, but he certainly understands–maybe better than anyone.

He won’t hold a grudge against you but will offer you an oddly out-of-character and soft hug before you’re sent off to your execution.

He’ll watch it all, unblinkingly. He knows what happens here and how brutal it all is. You had it coming, even if he didn’t believe you truly deserved it. He won’t shed any tears, nothing–it’s as if he doesn’t care.

But it’s far from it. He’ll work harder with the others to escape the game, and he’ll burn the memory of you into his mind. You played the game in an attempt to survive, as did others, and it was all because of the unnatural circumstances. He’d kill the game that killed you.

Teruteru Hanamura

Teruteru’s never been one for logical deduction or rational reasoning. But he knows the culprit can’t be you. At least, he thinks he knows. His s/o would never have the heart to do something so gruesome and scary. You would never fall victim to the impure motives of the killing game Monokuma created! Right?

Wrong. With shaking hands, he votes for you when there is no other possibility. He has argued against everyone, everyone, but all his objections were silenced without much difficulty. He can’t stand this as he waits for the results to be aired.

He thinks it must be a dream, an awful nightmare when he sees they’ve guessed correctly–but when he pinches himself, he feels. He feels the pain. He can’t escape this nightmare.

He’ll grab the hem of your shirt and beg you to tell him why, why did you do it? Why did you play this horrible game? Now you’d lose your life, and he’d lose you. Why?

He can’t watch you get executed. Just hearing the sounds is beyond difficult, it’s agony for him, whether the sounds come from you or not. He’ll be grossly sobbing, tears running down his round cheeks, sniffling and shaking intensely.

He vows not to play this game–even if it gets him killed, he will never do as you did. He’d survive, and he’d make sure to return to his restaurant and make delicious food for you, even if you could no longer eat it.

Korekiyo Shinguji

He’s just been watching the trial with the nonchalance of an observer, letting things run its course and sometimes interjecting with possibilities or such when it comes to it. He almost enjoys watching humanity have discourse and fight with all their will to survive.

Then Shuichi divulges the identity of the culprit as being you, and he can’t register Shuichi’s words quite well. Not that he found it disgusting or anything of the kind; after all, he finds your desire and will to live quite beautiful–a representation of humanity and its motivations.

However, the idea of you being taken away is hard for him to process, knowing that you being found as the culprit will result in your execution. He defends you, hoping to preserve your beautiful humanity and bring you success, but it is futile.

He is completely understanding and accepting of your actions, although he may have some questions for you about your choices in the murder and such–why you chose that victim, what ultimately drove you to kill them if it hasn’t been revealed by Shuichi yet.

He’ll feel conflicted between seeing you as another example of his treasured humanity as you’re sent off to your execution, and allowing himself to shed his own, human tears as he watches his dear s/o taken from him. He now understands why you have done what you did, but it doesn’t take away the pain of losing you. But he will watch as you are executed in its entirety, unable to turn away.

Your memory will vividly stay with him. In private, he may let himself mourn for you–but he would not show his feelings in front of the others, at any cost. He will take time out of his day to remember you now and then and the times you had gifted him with your presence.

You never want him to take you out to dinner, or buy you any treats and trinkets, or really anything he’d consider vaguely romantic.

Time hanging out with you is spent in the park, climbing trees, getting splinters and throwing branches at each other.

During those times he can see you, looking out into the horizon, higher than he can ever climb. With the wind blowing against you - you are almost an angel.

When he sees you, peaceful, looking off into the horizon of Japan, your past conversation rings through his head. “You think I’m materialistic?” 

He didn’t know what to respond with at the time. He had trinkets from all over the world, he could get you almost anything, and still, you deny.

There’s no talk of your past - no talk of things that make you happy - or anything he can use of leverage for presents.

“I’m just happy to be with you,” were the exact words you said to him.

He still doesn’t quite understand.

Nekomaru Nidai

You walk him to the gym - or the field, or where ever he always finds himself being needed, almost every day.

You stay with him, too, watching in the sidelines while he does his work.

Over the course of the time, he turns and sees you sitting, doing certain activities, just passing the time.

Never leaving without him.

And then you walk him to his house. This occurs in the am’s. Three to four, maybe. Two if you’re lucky.

“Don’t you have somewhere to be?” He asks, rubbing the back of his neck, staring down at your neutral eyes.

“Somewhere to be? No, not exactly.”

There’s no change in your gaze. No hint of teasing or annoyance. You didn’t seem bothered at all by his comment.

You continue, “I get enough pleasure from watching you, I don’t need to go anywhere else.”

A laugh leaves him, scaring away nearby birds.

Even though there’s a touch of concern in your core - wondering if he’s going to interrogate you - you laugh alongside him.

There’s a minute before you actually finish tying your laces. Are they too tight? Maybe. But it’s better than the skates being too loose.

His eagerness is palpable. Your feet march on their own, wobbling and scared against the cheap saturated carpet. You follow him off of the floor and onto the ice, where only about a dozen of people continued their practice.

No one captured your attention as much as he did. 

As he went ahead, mediocrely familiar with his own rhythm, the lights ahead shone bright and illuminated how delicate his smooth neck looked. 

So cute, you think, smirking a bit as pride swells inside of you. So you sway your feet, picking up speed, and find yourself pushing past him. When you turn to look at him, he's smiling calmly, as if you are an angel guiding him.

The space between you grows thinner and thinner, until soon he reaches out for your hand, intertwining his fingers with yours. Spotlights travel around the ground, showing the lingering carvings of friends and partners together on the ice with their light.

“It might be obvious,” Komaeda starts, grabbing the edge of the rink to stop both of you. His eyes glitter, though with tears or not, you aren’t too sure. “But I just so happen to have come across you walking here after school every day. You spend hours in here a day, don’t you?”

It’s not an accusation, but it feels like one.

You look at him, and then his eyes shift from yours. He even removes his hand from yours.

“Yes?” You edge on.

Silence is in the air - well, other than the other parties sending waves of laughter and happiness into the unease of his anxiousness. 

“Are you okay?” He eventually spits out. 

You look at his hands. They fidget together. 

So you put yours over them, letting your warmth soothe him, and putting on a playful tone. “I just like coming here, Nagito, there’s nothing for you to worry about.”

Teruteru Hanamura

He did not follow you to into the garden right away. It was as if he was hiding from you, as if he was sulking behind a corner. 

Ever since he had brought his mother - and his past home - he had not forgotten the way you shook your head when he asked about yours.

Concern hits him hard.

He’s worried about you more than he can even admit.

“Honey bunch?” He asks, slowly opening the door.

You look back to him, eyes bright, holding a watering can in your gloved hands. You just smile kindly at him.

“Yes?”

His feet pull him forward even when anxiousness laces in everything he does.

“You’re safe, aren’t you? Like... no one is causing you any harm?”

The softness of your expression shifts, only slightly. “You’re worrying yourself.”

The words came off passive aggressive, which wasn’t your intent, but definitely the end result.

“Maybe you’re right.” His accent draws out. Admitting it wasn’t hard but it was definitely the correct way to go about this. And he knows that. Starting any arguments is the last thing he wants.

“Thank you for worrying, but if I was unsafe I would tell you.”

Yeah, he thinks, but doubts your words nonetheless. 

You continue with a joyful laugh, “but now that you’re here, sorry to say, you are obligated to help me with the garden.”

Teruteru, Imposter, Mondo, and Kiyotaka with a writer S/O that refuses to take a break

((I’m gonna take this one as my first request! I hope it’s up to your expectations! -Mod Fuyuhiko))

Teruteru Hanamura

At first Teruteru doesn’t realize that you’re actually overworking yourself if he’s honest. He just thought you had found inspiration and were getting all you could out of it.

It was when you refused to come out of your room for dinner that he started to worry a bit, not because it was what he made for you (Well, okay maybe it was a little because of that), but because he knew you hadn’t eaten lunch, so the fact that you weren’t coming out at all was what worried him.

He came into your room with a plate of what he had made, coming up behind you while you sat facing your screen, wrapping his free arm around you.

“Wanna take a break to eat?”

Ignored

You didn’t even really register that he had spoken, you were too into what you were doing.

He kissed your cheek/the back of your neck, depending on how high up you were compared to him.

That managed to get your attention, at least more than he had before, which he took advantage of to keep asking if you wanted to eat.

You kept refusing, telling him you were doing something important, that this was time sensitive, I’m sorry honey but I need to do this

He wasn’t going to give in yet though.

This went on for a while, but to give you the short version, he kept telling you to eat and that you could work later and that babe I wanna be with youuu

He also may or may not have sat in your lap at one point.

He claimed it was to block your view of your computer/paper.

It was not

His persistence paid off, though, because you gave in and went to eat dinner and spend some much-needed relaxation time with him.

Ultimate Imposter

He’s seen people overexert themselves before in his studying of people, so when he notices the signs of you overworking he’s on it.

If he were actually trying to masquerade as someone in an accurate way at the time, he probably would’ve disregarded it like Byakuya would or something like that.

But he doesn’t really try to be anyone specific when he’s around you, honestly.

He just tries to be... Nice

Or that’s how he’d describe it, at least. He just doesn’t like masquarading as someone disrespectful around you.

He’s offering to take you to the park, the mall, any location he can think of.

He just wants you to get out of your cycle of writing, because through all of his people watching he knows just how serious this can get.

He doesn’t know exactly what could get you to stop and take a break, but he’ll suggest about everything he can think about.

His default support system is hugs and cuddles, though.

When he sees you working so hard he just comes up to you and pulls you into his arms.

He doesn’t really say anything at first trying to figure out what he wants to say, just holding you and moving you away from what you’re working on

He then tells you he doesn’t want you overworked and that if you wanted to go anywhere or to have anything he’d try his best to provide.

Once you understand you smile softly, maybe he was right that you were working a little too much.

You tell him he’s all you need right now and let yourself cuddle against him.

You ended up falling asleep, but he wasn’t going to wake you up so he ended up just napping with you in his arms.

Kiyotaka Ishimaru

Oh gosh

This boy

He will get s o worried immediately

He hasn’t seen you in a while, you haven’t left your room in so long.

It had probably only been a few hours.

Regardless, Taka was worried and wanted to make sure everything was okay, so he decided to check in on you.

He found you furiously typing away at your laptop/scribbling words onto paper, seemingly you’ve found inspiration.

He wasn’t about to stop your writing just because he was worried you weren’t feeling happy and healthy, but he needed to do something to make his presence known and check up on you, so he tapped your shoulder gently (Which may or may not have made you jump and mess up your writing, which to this day he still apologizes for), and asked what you were up to.

You told him you were busy, not specifying further

B i g m i s t a ke now this boy is in panic mode grabbing your hand and pulling you away from your laptop and pulling you away from your desk and sweetheart while this is nice and all why are you doing this

Normally he didn’t have a problem with you telling him he was busy, he would often tell you the same thing.

He told you that you sounded tired and ordered you to take a nap and swore that as soon as you woke up he’d make you something to eat, and then after a period of relaxation time (The duration would be decided, by him, after you two ate) he would give you permission to get back to work.

While you found his worrying a little silly, you appreciated how much he cared, and wrapped your arms around him.

If you were being forced to nap he was too.

You didn’t return to your work that day, you ended up spending it with Taka while he tried to cook, followed by taking him out to dinner.

Mondo Owada

At first he thinks it’s his fault that you’re staying in your room.

He thinks he did something that upset you.

He is s o worried because you’ve been in your room all day.

He probably waits the longest out of all these guys, not because he doesn’t care, but because he doesn’t want to upset you by coming into your room.

Eventually, though, he goes in to talk to you.

First order of business: Apologize to you.

It confuses you a lot, and when he explains (As best he can, swearing and hesitating a lot), you just sort of chuckle at him and kiss his cheek, explaining he didn’t do anything wrong.

Is he blushing from the kiss or embarrassment from misunderstanding? Who knows!

You say something about how you love him before turning back to your writing and resuming, which makes him think maybe you’ve been doing this all day with no breaks.

No breaks?

That’s not good. Too much work

He picks you up gently, carrying you outside and setting you on his motorcycle.

You’ve learned that a motorcycle ride is Mondo’s default stress reliever/comfort activity, and you can’t say you don’t agree that it’s nice

You find riding through towns, your arms wrapped around Mondo to be one of the most surprisingly comforting things that came with getting into a relationship with him.

After the ride, you sat together and talked, gazing at the stars.

You fell asleep laying on Mondo’s chest.

Ranking the V3 dub cast against their original DR roles!

Erika Harlacher (Kaede Akamatsu - Kyoko Kirigiri)

I’m not a huge fan of Erika Harlacher’s outing as Kirigiri- she sounds vaguely congested and doesn’t come close to conveying the iciness that should seem the obvious fit for a character like her. Kaede, on the other hand, is earnest and soulful and it comes across well in the dub. It’s a role that plays much more to her strengths, I think, and I’m happy she came back for a more flattering performance!

Kaede > Kirigiri

 Grant George (Shuichi Saihara – Leon Kuwata)

I’ve seen Grant George’s turn as Shuichi Saihara compared unfavorably to someone’s voiceover in a car commercial, which is honestly fair. It sticks out in the emotional monologues in the class trials, but a year later it’s that horrible generic “ah, um” voice clip that gets used approximately 5,000 times in the dub that keeps me up at night. It’s almost enough to forget he did a pretty solid job as Leon in 2014. Leon’s probably the least challenging role in the franchise, admittedly, but he played a solid douchey teenager with an entertaining breakdown.

Leon > Saihara

 Lucien Dodge (Kiibo – Hifumi Yamada)

A tossup here. Both roles are perfectly competent at what they are. The nasally voice for Hifumi was probably more demanding, but the Kiibo voice does a good job combining the Shounen protagonist with the robophobia conscious rigidity.

Kiibo > Hifumi, if only because casting recasting Lucien Dodge as the real Justice Robo was brilliant

 Kyle Herbert (Kaito Momota – Kazuichi Soda)

Kyle Herbert as Kazuichi is pathetic, emasculated, and screechy, so it’s pretty much perfect. It’s all the weirder he plays Kaito as a middle-aged smoker dad. It doesn’t come close to matching the energy of Kaito’s Japanese voice. Another pretty clear winner.

 Erica Mendez (Maki Harukawa – Nagisa Momoe)

An anomalous recast considering Nagisa isn’t in V3 but they invited her back with the other recast voices anyways. Maybe Erica Mendez is just a really cool person and NISA wanted to hang out with her more? In any case, she’s good as Maki and I don’t have much to say here.

 Johnny Yong Bosch (Rantaro Amami - Hajime Hinata)

Not an interpretation for Rantaro Amami I was expecting; I don’t associate JYB with deeper bad boy voices and he’s a character type I’d expect a softer and lighter brand of mysteriousness for. But I liked dub Amami quite a bit. I’m still going to give the edge to his role as Hinata, since he fits him perfectly and is easily the best protagonist dub voice NISA has given us.

Hinata > Amami

 Kira Buckland (Kirumi Tojo – Hiyoko Saionji)

Of all the recast voices in this game, Kira Buckland showed off the most range with her roles. Hiyoko’s original Japanese voice and the English dub version are both pretty stock voices for that character type, but Buckland as Kirumi gets to show off maturity, warmth, and distance that I never would have expected from someone who voiced Hiyoko. If I had to cast one VA from this game, I’d want her since I’m pretty sure she could do anything.

Kirumi > Hiyoko

 Chris Tergliafera (Ryoma Hoshi – Gundam Tanaka)

So this guy is perfect in both roles and I don’t understand why his behindthevoiceactors.com profile isn’t bigger. Tergliafera can do deep very well and he was a good hire for NISA. I’m going to give the edge to his take as Gundam since that voice role is much hammier and much more memorable for it, showing off comic chops along with the sexiness, but he nails the somber moments with Hoshi and it could go either way.

 Wendee Lee (Miu Iruma – Akane Owari)

Akane and Iruma are two character types who could have ended up with very similar voice performances, but Wendee Lee as Akane sounds oddly flat while Lee as Iruma is the exact level of hammy, vulgar, and cartoonish that I could hope for. It’s not hard to guess which role she probably had more fun with.

Kaiji Tang (Gonta Gokuhara – Yasuhiro Hagakure)

Now this one is just disappointing. Kaiji Tang is great and one of my favorite dub voices in the first game, but compared to his natural comic lightness as Hagakure his Gonta sounds like he’s reading from a script the whole time. Reading the dumb Tarzan text was probably as awkward for him as it was for all of us, but it’s still disappointing.

 Dorothy Elias-Fahn (Tsumugi Shirogane – Sayaka Maizono – Chihiro Fujisaki)

Our only triple cast! I kind of wish it was a more exciting vocal trio than this one. She’s fine but forgettable as Chihiro (it’s just kind of stuffy), perfectly competent at delivering an American approximation of the Kirby voice as Sayaka, and totally baffling as Tsumugi for a bunch of reasons. First of all, Tsumugi’s whole schtick is being plain; she didn’t need any kind of affect, especially not one as suspicious as the sugary helium voice. Secondly, it was probably more of a strain on the vocal cords to keep that up for six whole class trials. And thirdly, it’s just kind of obnoxious to listen to. What gives, NISA?

 Derek Stephen Prince (Kokichi Oma – Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu)

(remember when English speakers saw the dub tease and got outraged hearing Oma’s voice saying “Kayayday” thinking they had recast Bryce Papenbrook? That poor man)

Another case where the voice actor is very good at both roles. DSP as Oma is probably more nuanced, since he has to be playful and trollish but also bring a hard edge when he needs to, and the angry rasp he gives Kuzuryu fits perfectly and adds a lot to the SDR2 dub. I’m going to give it to his role in as Kuzuryu just because Oma’s “neeheehee!” voice clip in V3 is horrible.

 Todd Haberkorn (Korekiyo Shinguji – Teruteru Hanamura)

So I think Todd Haberkorn’s voice is incredibly distinctive and I have very particular associations with him as a VA (I mostly know him as the lead in Rosario + Vampire, because I am the worst). Him playing a gag character like Hanamura was entirely within my expectations and is something he’s generally very good at doing. Korekiyo is the exact opposite character type and I busted a gut as soon as I heard it. Korekiyo is a better character when you don’t take him too seriously, and Haberkorn is good with the lines. I’m still more of a fan of him as Hanamura, since the garbled southern accent at the class trial breakdown is much more fun than the sister class trial breakdown, which no VA can probably save.

 Julie Ann Taylor (Tenko Chabashira - Ibuki Mioda)

Julie Ann Taylor gives basically the same performance for both characters, but it’s a choice that makes sense considering Ibuki and Tenko have a very similar energy. Ibuki is slightly zingier and gets more memorable voice quips, but it’s another one that could go either way.

 Marieve Herington (Angie Yonaga – Celestia Ludenberg)

Celes’s wacky French accent? Perfect, amazing, a hilarious and entirely appropriate addition to her character and possibly the best adaptational decision NISA made. Angie’s extremely similar wacky accent? Kind of lazy and highlights the racist parts of her character. Granted, it was probably hard to win with that one, but still. Boo.

 Christine Marie Cabanos (Himiko Yumeno - Chiaki Nanami)

Christine Marie Cabanos as Himiko is my favorite dub voice in V3. She captures the laziness of the Japanese VA so well, nailing the gag of it but also nailing the emotional moments when it counts. What makes it great is knowing about Cabanos’s other work and how ultra-feminine magical girl types like Chiaki and Madoka Kaname are in her usual wheelhouse. Playing a character like Himiko must have been refreshing and it shows.

The cast of D2 as the the archetypes of highschool study groups

Not gonna lie, this one is pretty hard for someone who’s never really done study groups. I’ve worked alone on the majority of things, but I can give you an idea of what they’d be like when studying.

Goodbye Despair Study Buddies!!!

Akane Owari wouldn’t be much help. She would constantly be getting off track, yet always answer things when quizzed based off of gut feelings. She’d make wild and zany shortcuts for remembering definitions (ex.”Ayudar sounds like “Hey, you there!” which is something that you’d say if you needed help, yeah? Which is perfect! Ayudar means to help!”)

Byakuya Twogami would definitely enjoy using flash card methods to help with studying. Because he would most likely be helping out with competitive people, he would decide to make a game out of it so everyone could be stimulated in a fun way. He definitely wouldn’t use this as a reason to show off how smart he is whaaaat

Chiaki Nanami would try to make games out of everything. She’d definitely be one who support Twogami’s flashcard method, and would also try making memory games out of it. She’d also go out of her way to make Kahoots and stuff just to make it even more like a game to everyone.

Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu wouldn’t always be the best at being a study buddy per se, but would definitely show a rarer, more patient side. He wouldn’t admit it, but he’d definitely be excelling in just about every class he took. He would definitely be the kind of guy who refers to the weapons known as textbooks and actually make sense of the words in front of him.

Gundham Tanaka? Oh boy. Don’t get me started. This guy has no idea how to really contribute to a study group. At all. He’s not ever really needed to be in a study group, but he constantly stays on the sidelines of whatever study action is going on, promising to lend everyone his power, regardless of the consequences he should face in the foreseeable future. At least he’s supportive.

Hajime Hinata would be more than happy to take the reins and lead everyone through whatever exercises necessary if need be. He knows he works with a large group of varying personalities that can be hectic if left unattended to. Since he’s the ultimate tutor, he’d make sure to get 1-1 time with everyone, and quietly help them with understanding the stuff in front of them. He’s the State Farm of study groups.

Hiyoko Saionji would make a reward system for everyone while studying. If everyone could get a problem correct, she would let everyone eat a gummy! Not hers though, because she’ll cut you if you take her gummies. She uses reward systems everyday, trying to use it to control her anger and mean remarks to other people (besides Mikan, probably.).

Ibuki Mioda would have no idea what she’s doing either, but that’s just because she’s used to not having to sit in one place for soooooo long! It’s a pain to sit there and try to focus for prolonged amounts of time, so she would probably take frequent breaks, jamming out to whatever hectic new music she’s into. After coming back from a music break, she works faster than even Twogami.

Kazuichi Souda would definitely take the hands on approach for studying. When it comes to the subjects he does the best with, he helps others out as best as he can. This normally includes topics where models are more necessary to convey what’s going on, as opposed to subjects where you can only really get a grasp on things through words. He tends to ask Sonia for help with things like that.

Mahiru Koizumi… well, she would definitely be able to help quieter people. She isn’t one for study groups, but she does enjoy the company. It takes a lot of the stress out of studying, but she normally refrains from them until big exams comes up. That’s when she comes together with everyone she can in the class, tries to keep them quiet, and get some hardcore studying done. She would definitely be the kind of person who’s able to discern loads of information from tiny text that could be found on powerpoints and other books on the topic.

Mikan Tsumiki would go out of her way to try and be the best person when it comes to being tutored. She knows what it’s like to not be listened to when attempting to explain something, so she would definitely refrain from talking over others. She would also provide some of the most useful information and tips when it comes to studying. She would also be the one who constanly worries that people are gonna get too stressed if they sit down and attempt to continue their studies for prolonged amounts of time.

Nagito Komaeda probably wouldn’t show up to the study group to actually participate since he’s pretty sure his luck will carry him through whatever he needs help with. He’s there just to watch everyone in action and swoon over the true hope the Ultimates all bring! Because Hope Bagels! So! Much! Hope! So! Many! Bagels!

Nekomaru Nidai is definitely the dude who, while he’s smart and all that jazz, he’s definitely gonna ask 5.000 irrelevant and stupid questions. It’s not that he’s dumb, he’s just a little forgetful sometimes. He’d probably be the most optimistic about the study group and do his best to be a good member.

Peko Pekoyama doesn’t study. She is nowhere to be seen. She’s probably just outside waiting for Fuyuhiko. She may be looking at pictures of soft animals on her phone while she waits, though.

Sonia Nevermind will fuck you UP with her study tips! She’s the queen of studying! She watches everyone struggle and such, but she internally wants to take over and get things done!! She’s five steps ahead of everyone, and she’s already processing and translating what Shakespeare said in a monologue found within A Midsummer Night’s Dream while everyone’s still stuck on the American Revolution. Why was this a big deal? Did George Washington really wear a big hat? What is this?

Teruteru Hanamura is also nowhere to be seen. He’s probably off either being a horndog or getting frustrated at other foods. He would probably show up towards the end with platters of food though because everyone was working hard and whatnot.
