she didn’t notice him at first , too focused on thanking the barista for not charging her for the refill even though she left what she would have had to pay in the tip jar at the register . as she turned around , she thought she saw him out of the corner of her eye, but it couldn’t have been him — it shouldn’t have been him . she told herself not to look twice , that even if it was him she didn’t want to see him ; but of course , her curiosity got the best of her . eyes remained shut as she pivoted her steps , chest rising and falling with a deep breath before opening her eyes and — thank god it wasn’t him , that time . she was flooded with a wave of relief ,  too excited to turn around and go back to her seat that she didn’t realize she was in someone’s way , bodies colliding together and sending grace’s drink spilling all over her chest . “ oh my god — i’m so sorry “ she still hadn’t looked up to see who it was she had just apologizing to ; and by the time she did , she wished she hadn’t .“ gio ?! “ . she yelled his name out faster than she could even process that it was him , feelings similar to nausea immediately rising to her throat and making it hard for her to swallow . what was he doing here ? how long had been here ? why didn’t he think to call her ? you’d think she’d seen a ghost , so startled by his presence she barely noticed the mug she was holding slip out of her hand and shatter across the floor beneath them . “ what are you doing here ?  “ she’s breathless , barely able to even fathom the fact that he’s standing in front of her , let alone that she’s talking to him . “  i thought we — “ she pauses , there was no ‘we’ anymore , “ i thought you were staying in stanford ? “ ( @giovittorio )

12 Things You Should Know About Campari
Tumblr media
Few bottles stand out on the liquor shelf quite like crimson-hued Campari. Even when it’s poured into a glass, the drink’s distinct color makes it instantly recognizable.
Though contenders have emerged to challenge Campari’s dominance, when it comes to mixing classic cocktails like Negronis and Americanos, bartenders agree: There’s simply no substitute for Campari.
Want to learn more about this quintessential Italian apéritif? Here are 12 things you should know about Campari.
Campari is older than Italy.
In 1860, Gaspare Campari founded his eponymous drinks brand in the Italian town of Novara, 30 miles west of Milan. The company’s formation predated the unification of Italy by a decade.
Classic cocktails and a landmark shopping mall helped popularize the brand.
Shortly after launching his drinks brand, Campari opened a wine shop in Italy’s oldest shopping mall, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Located in the heart of Milan, steps from the city’s Duomo, the brand transformed the wine shop into the Camparino aperitivo bar in 1915, offering a range of proprietary apéritifs and liqueurs. None were more popular than its bitter red apéritif, which was helped, in no small part, by its inclusion in a number of emerging cocktails (more on those later).
Only two of Gaspare’s drinks survived succession of ownership.
When Camapri’s sons Davide and Guido took control of the company in 1920, they reduced the brand’s portfolio to drop some of Gaspare’s more experimental bottlings, downsizing to just one apéritif, Bitter Campari, and a clear, raspberry-based bittersweet liqueur, Cordial Campari. Production of the cordial ceased in the 1990s.
Campari pours definitively classic cocktails.
In the 1920s, the International Bartenders Association included two Campari cocktails in its list of classic drinks, The Unforgettables. With their inclusion, the Americano and the Negroni became two of a small handful of recipes where a specific liquor brand was named among the ingredients.
Not included in the list, but similarly iconic, are the Negroni Sbagliato (one part Campari, one part red vermouth, and one part sparkling wine) and the Milano-Torino, or Mi-To, which mixes equal parts Campari (which comes from Milan) and red vermouth (which traditionally hails from Turin).
Some Campari cocktails represent the unification of Italy.
Named after Giuseppe Maria Garibaldi, the Italian general who contributed to the country’s unification, the Garibaldi mixes Campari, cane syrup, and freshly squeezed orange juice. The drink is a symbol of the unification of the north and south of the country, with Campari representing Milan and Sicilian oranges representing the south.
Campari is much more than a bitter, red apéritif.
Though best associated with the bitter red apéritif, Campari is one of a number of liquor brands that make up Gruppo Campari. The group currently has offices and production facilities in 25 countries worldwide and comprises more than 50 different alcohol brands, including Aperol, Grand Marnier, Skyy Vodka, and Wild Turkey.
Art is integral to Campari’s history.
Starting in the 1920s, Campari enlisted a number of renowned artists to create posters advertising the drink and its iconic cocktails. The artists included Ugo Mochi, Adolf Hohenstein, Marcello Nizzoli, and Leonetto Cappiello, who created the famous “Spiritello” poster, in which a sprite emerges from an orange peel holding a bottle of Campari.
Another piece, “Manifesto Campari,” designed by Bruno Munari in 1964, coincided with the opening of the M1 subway line in Milan. The image features a fragmented composite of a number of different Campari logos, which were designed to be identifiable at a glance or at speed (i.e., from within a moving subway car). The graphic is now permanently exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Campari also has its own gallery.
Galleria Campari opened in 2010, the year of the brand’s 150th anniversary. It’s located inside the Liberty building in Sesto San Giovanni, Milan, which was also the first Campari production plant.
Campari has always been bitter, but it’s not always sold that way.
Traditionally, posters for the red apéritif included the words “Bitter Campari” and those touting the clear liqueur read “Cordial Campari.” With the brand no longer needing to differentiate between the two drinks, it has since dropped the word “bitter” from advertisements and massively reduced its prominence on bottle labels.
Campari changes around the world.
Depending on where it’s bottled and sold, Campari appears with a number of different alcoholic strengths. Iceland and Sweden receive the lowest-strength bottling, at 21 percent ABV, while in the U.S., Campari registers 24 percent ABV. Those wishing to sample Campari with a kick should head to Jamaica, where the bitter apéritif enters the bottle at 28.5 percent ABV.
Campari’s recipe is a closely guarded secret.
Campari’s bittersweet flavor profile arrives via the infusion of alcohol and water with bitter herbs, aromatic plants, and fruit. According to Eligio Bossetti, a historian at Villa Campari, only three individuals know the exact recipe, which is rumored to contain up to 80 ingredients. The formula is so secret, in fact, that the identity of the three recipe holders is also a closely guarded secret.
The color is (usually) artificial.
Traditionally, an insect-based coloring made from cochineal bugs was used to give Campari its crimson hue. In 2006, use of the insect was discontinued in most countries, including the United States, with artificial coloring included as a replacement.
At least one market, however, still uses cochineal. On Swedish bottles of Campari, the label lists the coloring agent E120, which is also known as carmine, carminic acid, or cochineal.

Urban barracks turned open-source campus
*Really? Wow.  I’ll have to walk over and have good look.
Urban barracks turned open-source campus
Carlo Ratti Associati reimagines the modular structure of a 19th century military complex in Italy to create an urban lab for co-living, co-making and co-working
August 9th, 2017 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
International Design and Innovation office Carlo Ratti Associati has started the renovation of a former 19th century military complex in Turin, Italy, that will turn the site into a testing ground for an open-source approach to architecture. The project extends across a 20,000 square-meter (200,000 square-foot) area called Caserma Lamarmora, owned by Italian state fund Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP). The design offers a fresh take on the barracks’ characteristic modular structure, which will be updated and reimagined to welcome a new mix of functions for co-living, co-making and co-working: from labs for Makers to residences for students and locals. The site development encourages bottom-up growth, without imposing any fixed notions of how the space should be used.
The vacant Caserma Lamarmora complex, named after a general who fought for Italian Unification in the 1840s, is composed of a porticoed main building and six smaller barracks. Each of these edifices reveals a common structure, based on an arch-shaped unit of approximately 80 square meters. With its design, Carlo Ratti Associati enhances the modular character of the building, opening it up to multiple uses which will ultimately be determined by its future occupants, in accordance with open-source principles. The complex boasts more than 150 units, allowing for a lively, ever-changing overlapping of functions.
“This project does not dictate how people should use the space – rather it allows the space to evolve organically, through a continuous process of renewal, improvement, and adaptation of individual spaces”, says Carlo Ratti, professor at MIT in Boston and founding partner of Carlo Ratti Associati: “To borrow Dutch theorist John Habraken’s metaphor, our design provides the structure and the technical foundation, but the actual infill will be up to the inhabitants. We believe that such a hybrid approach is crucial to achieve a true user-driven, open-source approach* to the built environment.”
The renovation will also help to rejuvenate the vast area between the buildings, currently hidden behind a walled structure. This will allow for the creation of a new 100-meter long, 60-meter wide public square, accessible via large flight of steps, that will be an ideal location for events and performances. The project will thus give Turin an iconic new public space, similar in scope to Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Turin’s best known landmark as well as one of Italy’s largest squares. “While others are building walls, we are giving our contribution by demolishing some of them on this site”, says Antonio Atripaldi, project leader at Carlo Ratti Associati.
The design also pays tribute to the central role that the building played during WWII. Built in the last decades of the 19th century, the Caserma Lamarmora later became the location where fascist police imprisoned partisans and political opponents. More than 400 people died in the building, with evidence of the executions still visible in traces on the barracks’ walls. Over seventy years later, one of the barracks is set to become a museum focused on the Italian resistance movement. "We wanted to acknowledge the building's tragic history, by being as respectful to the original structure as possible”, adds Atripaldi: “While we have discreetly played with the modules, the most visible evidence of our intervention is the opening of the central square. With this project, we aim at transforming a former Place of Arms into what we may call a ‘Place of Arts’”.
Carlo Ratti Associati ® | Caserma Lamarmora Press Release | August 9th, 2017 | [email protected]
The Caserma Lamarmora is part of a global trend of the past few decades involving the transformation of former military installations into more imaginative and humane structures. Other examples that have been at the core of urban regeneration schemes include Hong Kong’s Victoria Barracks, Singapore’s Dempsey Hill, and London’s Chelsea Barracks. Locally, the project aims to establish a new community made up of local residents, students and temporary workers, and digital manufacturing laboratories.
Initially presented to Turin’s City Hall in Spring 2016, the project has been evolving since then, in accordance with feedback from the community and local authorities. The renovation works are expected to start in 2018.

High-risk soft tissue sarcomas treated with perioperative chemotherapy: Improving prognostic classification in a randomised clinical trial
Tumblr media
Publication date: April 2018 Source:European Journal of Cancer, Volume 93 Author(s): Sandro Pasquali, Chiara Colombo, Sara Pizzamiglio, Paolo Verderio, Dario Callegaro, Silvia Stacchiotti, Javier Martin Broto, Antonio Lopez-Pousa, Stefano Ferrari, Andres Poveda, Antonino De Paoli, Vittorio Quagliuolo, Josefina Cruz Jurado, Alessandro Comandone, Giovanni Grignani, Rita De Sanctis, Elena Palassini, Antonio Llomboart-Bosch, Angelo Paolo Dei Tos, Paolo G. Casali, Piero Picci, Alessandro Gronchi BackgroundPatients with extremity and trunk wall soft tissue sarcoma (STS) with high malignancy grade and size >5 cm are at high-risk of death. This risk varies depending also on other patient and tumour features, including histologic subtype. This study investigated whether a prognostic nomogram can improve risk assessment of these patients.MethodsData from high-risk STS patients enrolled in a randomised controlled trial investigating different perioperative chemotherapy regimens were analysed. Ten-year probability of overall survival (OS) and incidence of distant metastasis (DM) were computed using the prognostic nomogram Sarculator (pr-OS and inc-DM, respectively). Tumour response according to RECIST and Choi criteria was also investigated.FindingsVariation in pr-OS and inc-DM were observed and patients stratified in three prognostic groups. The 10-year OS in the low, intermediate, and high pr-OS categories were 0·42 (95%CI 0·32–0·52), 0·63 (95%CI 0·53–0·72), and 0·78 (95%CI 0·68–0·85), respectively. Patients in the intermediate (HR 0·51, P = 0·002) and high (HR 0·28, P < 0·001) pr-OS categories were at statistically significant lower risk of death compared with those in the low pr-OS category. Higher rate of Choi partial tumour responses were detected in intermediate pr-OS category. Tumour response according to Choi but not to RECIST criteria stratified patient survival of pr-OS categories, particularly for patients with intermediate to low pr-OS. Analyses conducted for 10-year inc-DM were consistent with results for pr-OS for prognostic value of Sarculator predictions and Choi tumour response.InterpretationSarculator identifies variations in outcomes of high-risk STS treated with perioperative chemotherapy and improve prognostic classification, which is also associated with different patterns of tumour response, an outcome that further stratifies survival particularly for patients predicted at higher risk. Future trials investigating neoadjuvant chemotherapy should consider prognostic tool for selecting patients to be enrolled.Trial registration numberEuropean Union Drug Regulating Authorities Clinical Trials No. 2004-003979-36. http://ift.tt/2Fo4bmU

Venise qui Parle
Venise qui parle is a photography installation which collects the urban hieroglyphics of our time. It looks for hidden layers of meaning and hidden cities by investigating the complex relationship between citizens and the urban environment.
Venise qui parle is a visual research focused on words, sentences, texts and - more in general - signs and expressions left on the built fabric. We are interested in the intersection between written language and the city. In how the citizen uses the city as support and device to connect with others, to appropriate a space or simply to talk loudly. In how buildings and artifacts participate and get engaged in such a weird plural dialogue. We are interested in this particular form of interaction which we like to refer with the name city-empathy.
Venise qui parle, in the context of the Unfolding Pavilion, wants to document the traces left over the walls of Venetian modern architecture designed by renowned architects such as Gino Valle, Vittorio Gregotti and Alvaro Siza. How do their buildings talk with venetian citizens? How do they contribute to build people imaginaries? Are they capable to create a connection with everyday users? Are they capable to inspire values like beauty? Venise qui parle finds answers – and sometimes new questions - in the words written into these buildings.

FREE ENTRANCE FOR MUSEUMS IN ROME
Though visiting Rome can become pretty expensive, only a few tourists know that there are plenty of museums you can see for free. Why not taking the opportunity to visit such an amazing amount of beautiful works of art if it’s for free?
FIRST SUNDAY
Not many tourists know that on the first Sunday of each month all public museums in Italy can be visited for free. That includes also monuments and archaeological sites that are state property. This new law was introduced in 2014 and since then each first sunday many museums get crowded. While it’s a great opportunity to visit great museums for free, tourists should also take into account that they might be required to wait on a long que before entering their favorite site. So remember this option on the next useful dates (March 5th, April 2nd, May7th) and make sure you plan your day in the most convenient way.
In particular will be free admission for all visitors: Colosseum ,Castel Sant’Angelo Villa Adriana and Villa D’Este(Tivoli) , the Galleria Borghese , MAXXI , Palazzo Massimo, Palazzo Altemps, the Crypta Balbi the Baths of Diocletian , the Baths of Caracalla ,The National Gallery of Modern Art and Contemporary, the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella and the Villa dei Quintili on ‘Appia Antica ,National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia ,HC Andersen Museum, M. Venice Competition Includes Films From George Clooney, Guillermo del Toro, Darren Aronofsky
The Italian festival is once again debuting a number of Oscar contenders during its 74th edition.
In its 74th year, the Venice Film Festival is once again debuting a slate of potential Oscar contenders from top directors, including George Clooney, Darren Aronofsky and Guillermo del Toro.
Festival director Alberto Barbera on Thursday unveiled the lineup for this year at the Cinema Moderno in Rome.
“I’m very satisfied,” Barbera said about the lineup. “I have to say that I am 97 percent satisfied in the sense that there are only maybe two or three films that we wanted to have for the festival, and we couldn’t, because they will go to other festivals. So all the films that we saw and that we wanted to have are in the lineup of this year’s festival.”
As previously announced, Alexander Payne’s satire Downsizing, starring Matt Damon, will open the fest in competition. The film is about a family that seeks a better life through shrinking. The film also stars Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz, Laura Dern and Jason Sudeikis.
Vying for the Golden Lion this year, from a jury led by Annette Bening, are 21 world premieres.
Artist and activist Ai Weiwei will enter the competition with his documentary about the current refugee crisis, Human Flow.
Darren Aronofsky, who presided over the Venice jury in 2011, will bring his eagerly anticipated horror film Mother! to the festival. Mother!, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem and Ed Harris, centers around a relationship being tested after the arrival of unwelcome visitors.
Damon will be pulling double-duty at the fest as he will also star in George Clooney’s Suburbicon, written by Clooney and the Coen Brothers, about a family morally descending after a home invasion goes very wrong. It also stars Coen favorites Julianne Moore, Oscar Isaac and Josh Brolin.
Guillermo del Toro will debut his other-worldly Cold War era fairytale The Shape of Water, starring Michael Shannon, Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer.
And Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, a dark comedy from Martin McDonagh (In Bruges), starring Woody Harrelson, Peter Dinklage and Frances McDormand, will also bow on the Lido.
Paul Schrader’s religious-themed thriller First Reformed, starring Ethan Hawke and Amanda Seyfried, will also premiere in Venice.
Abdellatif Kechiche will bring his 1980s coming-of-age story Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno to the fest, and Paolo Virzi will premiere his first American The Leisure Seeker, starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland, to the Lido.
Out of competition, the festival continues its relationship with Netflix with the world premiere of Our Souls at Night, with honorary Golden Lions going to the film’s stars Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.
Netflix also will premiere its first Italian production, the modern-day mafia saga Suburra. And it will screen the Errol Morris series Wormwood, starring Peter Sarsgaard and Molly Parker, the festival’s only non-world premiere.
Also out of competition, Stephen Frears will debut Victoria & Abdul, starring Judi Dench, Ali Fazal and Eddie Izzard about the unlikely friendship between Queen Victoria and a young Indian clerk. And Fernando Leon De Aranoa’s Loving Pablo will debut, starring Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Peter Sarsgaard.
James Toback’s The Private Life of a Modern Woman stars Sienna Miller, Alec Baldwin and Charles Grodin. And Abel Ferrara’s documentary Piazza Vittoria will screen, telling the story of the neighborhood in Rome where he lives.
Rodarte sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy will premiere their feature film Woodshock, starring Kirsten Dunst and Pilou Asbaek.
And Kitano Takeshi’s new yakuza film Outrage Coda will close the fest.
New this year, Venice is launching a VR competition with 22 films, with a jury headed by John Landis. The lineup includes the film La Camera Insabbiata by Laurie Anderson and Huang Hsin-Chien.
Venice’s Horizons section will open with Susanna Nicchiarelli’s Nico, 1988 about the Velvet Underground singer and Andy Warhol muse. The only American film in Horizons is the documentary The Rape of Recy Taylor by Nancy Buirski, about a white gang rape of an African-American woman in Alabama in 1944. Also in the lineup of the section is Anne Fontaine’s coming-of-age story Marvin, which stars Isabelle Huppert and Finnegan Oldfield.
The 74th Venice International Film Festival takes place Aug. 30 to Sept. 9. Read the full lineup below.

Book Review: ITALOMODERN 1 & 2
ITALOMODERN 1: Architecture in Northern Italy 1946–1976 by Martin and Werner Feiersigner Park Books, 2016 Paperback, 352 pages ITALOMODERN 2: Architecture in Northern Italy 1946–1976 by Martin and Werner Feiersigner Park Books, 2016 Paperback, 552 pages Brothers Martin and Werner Feiersinger shared a passion and followed through on it, producing two amazing books about thirty years of postwar architecture in Northern Italy. The two researched, selected, visited, photographed, drew, and wrote about hundreds of buildings, creating an unparalleled survey with many surprises. For the most part, Martin, an architect practicing in Vienna, was responsible for the selection, texts and plans, and Werner, a sculptor and photographer also in Vienna, took the photos. Their contributions are accompanied by an essay by fellow Austrian Otto Kapfinger and biographical material on the architects of the buildings; all of it is handsomely packaged by Park Books into two bound volumes with simple linen covers that recall the era of concern. I'm guessing the whole enterprise could have been squeezed into one book fairly easily, though most likely with larger pages. This would have turned the two portable volumes into coffee table books rather than travel guides. That, and the parallel between two brothers and two volumes makes the final result fitting. Regardless, it's not clear as to why certain projects are in Volume 1 and others (more of them) are in Volume 2; perhaps it's explained somewhere in the text and I missed it, or it's simply that there were too many good buildings to fit into one book so a second one was added. Whatever the case, I can't imagine having just the first or the second volume, such is their appeal. Volume 1 starts with a "logbook" by Arno Ritter, who is credited as developing the concept with the Feiersinger brothers and Willi Schmid. Following that is a chronological presentation of the buildings mapped on the yellow spread above. Interspersed among the projects is the essay by Otto Kapfinger, an architect and author who singles out some of the projects for the exploration of thirteen "notes" that are paralleled by texts by Rossi, Tafuri, and others. The buildings he highlights from Volume 1 are exceptional, but the more I glance at the projects I wonder if that would be the case with just about any selection. Regardless, as in other books, real estate is one way to determine which buildings at least the authors find most interesting; some buildings receive only one spread, meaning the ones given multiple spreads must have really captivated the Feiersingers during their research and travels. Volume 2 is a chronological presentation of even more projects (the blue map), but instead of an essay inserted between them intermittently, there are bios of the architects accompanied by bibliographies, selected works, and a list of their works in the books keyed to the page numbers. These bios and indexing are a strong argument for getting both books, in addition to, as already mentioned, the quality of architecture found throughout. What is most amazing for somebody like me, who thinks they know a little something about European architecture, is how many surprises are inside. The work of one architect is singled out in Kapfinger's essay as "a veritable 'discovery'" by the brothers: "Architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni? Never heard of him?" He's featured no less than fifteen times in the two volumes, alongside familiar names (Giancarlo De Carlo, Vittorio Gregotti, Giovanni Michelucci, Giò Ponti, and Aldo Rossi, to name just a few) and other "discoveries" that should entice people to drive around Northern Italy with these two books in hand.

The two of Villa Torlonia Museums are the Casino Nobile and the hoot of owls and are part of the System of Museums in the City of Rome.
The Casino Nobile owes its appearance to, around 1802, by Giuseppe Valadier, later, between 1835-40, that of Giovan Battista Caretti who added the facade’s majestic porch.
Many artists worked on the decoration, which Podesti and Coghetti, as well as sculptors and plasterers of Thorvaldsen and Canova school.
When, from 1925 to 1943, the villa was rented to Benito Mussolini, who used it in his private residence in the basement were built a gas shelter and an air-raid shelter, visited by appointment.
The restored building is home to two representative plans the Villa Museum, with sculptures and antique furniture. On the second floor there is the Museum of the Roman School (opening soon), with paintings, sculptures and drawings of the artists of that, considered among the most interesting and bustling of the figurative research in the period between the First and Second World War, the current also known under the name of Scuola Romana.
The adjacent Casino dei Principi, where he consulted the Archive of the Roman School, rich in documents periodically hosts temporary exhibitions.
The hoot of owls stands out for its originality. Conceived in 1839 by Giuseppe Jappelli as “Swiss Hut”, it was transformed in the early twentieth century eclectic villa, residence of Prince Torlonia. His name is linked to the use of decorative elements inspired by the theme of the owl. The many stained glass windows present were made largely by Cesare Picchiarini between 1910 and 1925, to designs by Duilio Cambellotti, Umberto Bottazzi, Vittorio Grassi and Paul Paschetto.
Since opening to the public in 1997 as a museum space, the original collection of the Lodge has been enriched with stained glass windows by the same authors and with drawings, sketches and cartoons.

Villa Torlonia, the most recent of the villas belonging to Rome’s nobility, still retains a particular fascination due to the originality of its English-style garden (one of the few examples in the city), and to the unexpectedly large number of buildings and garden furniture in the grounds. When Giovanni Torlonia inherited the title of Marchese in 1797, to confirm his new status he purchased Villa Colonna (formerly Villa Pamphilj) on Via Nomentana and commissioned Giuseppe Valadier to renovate the property to raise it to the standard of the other villas belonging to noble families in Rome. Between 1802 and 1806 Valadier turned the main building into an elegant palace, transformed the small Casino Abbati into a very gracious palazzina (today the Casino dei Principi), and built the Stables and an imposing entrance (demolished when the Via Nomentana was widened). He also laid out the park with symmetrical, perpendicular avenues around the palace, and the view to the north from the building in line with one of the entrances to the Villa from Via Nomentana. Numerous works of Classical art, many of which were sculptural, were purchased to furnish the Villa. Following the death of Giovanni, in 1832 his son Alessandro commissioned the painter and architect Giovan Battisti Caretti to enhance and increase the size of the property. In addition to enlarging the size of the buildings, Caretti constructed several features in the park to suit the eclectic taste of the Prince: these were the False Ruins, the Temple of Saturn, the Tribuna con Fontana, an Amphitheatre, the Coffee-house, and the Chapel of Sant’Alessandro (the last three no longer exist). To plan and carry out the works inside the Villa, Alessandro employed two other architects: Quintiliano Raimondi for the Theatre and Orangery (today more commonly known as the Lemon-house), and Giuseppe Jappelli, who was in charge of the entire south section of the Villa. This area was completely transformed with winding avenues, small lakes, exotic plants and decorated with buildings and outdoor furniture of unusual taste: the Swiss Hut (later transformed into the Casina delle Civette), the Conservatory, the Tower and Moorish Grotto, and the Tournament Field. The huge self-celebratory project culminated in 1842 with the erection of two pink granite Obelisks that commemorated Alessandro’s parents, Giovanni and Anna Maria Torlonia.Yet despite the work and effort expended, Villa Torlonia was only on a few occasions the setting for magnificent social events for high-ranking foreign and Roman nobles that Alessandro had hoped for. In an attempt to relaunch the splendour of the family name, his heir, another Giovanni, built the Medieval House, another enclosure wall, the Red House, and the Watchman’s House at the entrance on Via Spallanzani, and he radically transformed the Swiss Hut to turn it into the current Casina delle Civette. The new buildings were for the most part designed to be lived in. In 1919 a large underground Jewish cemetery was discovered in the north-west area of the grounds. In 1929 it became the house of Mussolini and his family, where he remained until 1943. The presence of the Duce did not bring substantial modifications: he lived in the Palace and used the Medieval House and the Lemon-house to show films and hold parties and cultural meetings. And a tennis court was set up on the Tournament Field. Nor did the Park undergo changes, with the exception of the creation of vegetable gardens during the war at the instigation of Mussolini’s wife. In June 1944 the entire property was occupied by the Allied High Command which remained there until 1946. The Villa was bought by the Municipality of Rome in 1977 and a year later it was opened to the public. A series of restoration projects was initiated in the 1990s in both the park and buildings: first the Casina delle Civette, then the Casino dei Principi, the southern section of the park, the Red House, and more recently the Lemon-house, Medieval House, Casino Nobile, Old Stables, and the north section of the park. With the opening of the theatre in December 2013, and with the upcoming openings of the greenhouse and Moorish tower, which have already been restored, Villa Torlonia will return to its former glory.
