@liveshaunted gets a starter!
Tumblr media
there's tears gathered in steve's eyes as he looks at eddie, betrayal written all over his face. "so what? this all just been a lie? a-all of it? you tricked me, made me fall in love with you, all for what? a fucking bet?" he takes several steps back, shaking his head as he does. "i know i used to be an ass, but i don't fucking deserve this. i wouldn't have done this to you, i wouldn't have done this to anyone." his eyes harden now, despite the tears still in them. "i guess you're pretty damn proud of yourself though, huh? how much money do you get for breaking my heart?"

10 years later, 2020
“How is it going with you two?” Bucky sips his coffee as he sits across you and Steve.
You raised an eyebrow at him. “What do you mean?”
“I would’ve expected a wedding invitation by now from both of you,” He looks at the two of you pointedly.
You choke on your latte and then glanced at Steve. “Seriously?”
Steve glances back at you and laughed, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck.
Bucky bursts out in laughter. “Shit. That was priceless!”
“Oh shut up, Buck.” Steve rolls his eyes at his friend.
“Yeah, Barnes. We’re just friends,” You nudge Steve with your shoulder. “Right, Steve?”
Steve shrugs and nods, leaning in front and picking up a fork to cut into his slice of chicken pie. “Yeah,”
Jesus. What was that stinging pain in your heart?
Steve left for the washroom and it was just you and Bucky.
“Bitch move, Y/N.”
You look at Bucky cluelessly. “What did I do?”
“That guy is hopelessly in love with you and you just told him that you two are just friends.” He pointedly says.
You roll your eyes in reply. “You’re exaggerating. He’s not hopelessly in love with me, Buck.”
“Say that to his lost, sad, depressed puppy dog face whenever you get into a new relationship.” Bucky kicks your leg under the table.
“You’re just bullshitting now, Barnes.”
There was no way Bucky was right. Your mum’s told you the same thing, so did Steve’s parents. And then there was Natasha who said something along the lines too. Lets not forget Sam either.
Steve being in love with you? That’s just impossible.
“You shouldn’t deny the truth, Y/L/N.”
Steve walks back to the table. “Deny what?”
You turn to Steve in slight surprise before you quickly recovered. “Bucky was just saying some things about-”
“-About how you’ve been in love with Y/N since you were kids,” Bucky interrupts you.
Steve blushes immediately, the pink flowing up to his pale cheeks and he stuttered a little. “W-what?”
You step on Bucky’s toes with your boots and glare at him. His knee shoots up and hits the table as he groans in pain.
You turned to Steve and smiled kindly, “Nope, Bucky was just playing with you,”
Steve nods and settles back on the seat beside you.
You thought to yourself while the two guys chat about yesterday’s baseball game.
Steve gets sad when you get into a new relationship? And then he gets awkward when you say that you two are just friends.
Damn it, Bucky.
But Steve’s just being Steve. He’s always awkward... right?
-
“I’m not even kidding, Nat. Like seriously, Steve? Liking me?” You huff.
“Think about it this way,” She was lying on the couch, her legs resting on your lap. “He has a lot of flings and ex girlfriends. But why did none of them last long?”
You look down at her. “Because he hasn’t found the right person?”
Natasha shrugs. “That could be one. But you two already act like a couple.” She shifted and sits up straight, turning to you seriously. “He’s looking around for something he already has. Except, it isn’t official.”
You were meeting Natasha so you ended up leaving the guys earlier at the cafe. Apparently, they were planning on having some guys night with Sam.
You frown at Natasha. “We don’t act like a couple.”
Nat raised an eyebrow at you with a ‘really’ expression. “You cuddle, you know what each other like and dislikes, he spends money on you, you spend money on him and you sleep together on the same bed.”
“Isn’t that the norm for best friends?”
Tasha rolls her eyes. “You don’t see Sam kiss my forehead before he goes home or see Bucky buy me an iPad, now, do you?”
“I’ve known Steve since I was one.” You pointed out.
This topic was seriously making you think like crazy. You didn’t even know you acted like a couple with Steve. Like seriously???
“Valid point. But do you really think his exes give a shit about that when he helps you put on your coat and shit?”
“But-”
Natasha laughs at you, completely stopping your speech. “Denial is not a good look on you, sweetie.”
You sigh as Nat stands up and heads into the kitchen.
She comes back out with two bottles of beer. “Listen, Y/N. All I’m saying is, maybe you don’t see it but everyone around you sees what’s going on.” She settles beside you on the couch. “Your brain just functions at a slower rate than others.”
You gasp and smack her arm harshly. “Rude!”
Nat bursts out in laughter before calming down and snuggled into you. “Just, if it’s meant to be, it will happen someday. Forcing things will only make it worse.”
“Does he really sulk when I get into relationships?” You rest your head on top of Natasha’s.
“Yeap!”
You sigh again. “Okay then, why do my relationships not last long?”
“Because the intimacy you want with said partner is already something you share with Steve.” Nat stops and tried to think of a way to convey her thoughts. “Minus the kisses and sex.”
You sighed for what seemed like the nth time that day. “Alright lets change topics. How are your ballet lessons going?”
-
You had some guy named Jake over at your place a few days after your girls night with Nat. It was just a one night thing and he was already in the corridor outside your apartment when Steve appeared from the stairs, slightly breathless.
You see his face drop when he sees the guy standing outside your door. Wait- why have you never seen that before? It wasn’t the first time Steve came over while there was a guy at your apartment?
Fuckfuckfuck. Damn it, Bucky. And Natasha.
“Hey, Steve.” You turn to Jake, or was it Jacob? “Bye, Joseph.”
Said guy just looks at you in shock. “It’s John.”
“Yeah, potato, potahto.” You flashed him a grim smile before dragging Steve into your apartment and leaving the John in the corridor.
“I’ll make breakfast?” You ask Steve, already making your way to the kitchen.
He follows closely behind you. “I’ll help. What do you want?”
“Mom’s congee?”
Steve looks at you in shock. “You’re the best.”
“I know, Stevie.” You wink at him. “Just fry the chicken. And cut the onions, please, I beg you.”
“Yeah, yeah. Whatever.” Steve hurriedly washed his hand and took whatever he needed from the fridge.
“You wanna call the others to hang out?”
Steve shrugs, “Up to you. But you call. I just washed my hands.”
You took out your phone and shoot a text to the groupchat. The one with Sam, Nat and Bucky.
Y/N: congee day
Y/N: no beer no entry.
Sam: OOOO
Nat: beer and congee? seriously?
Y/N: hey, no one’s forcing you to come nat ??
Sam: there in an hour. with beer.
Bucky: is steve making his fried chiken
Y/N: yeah
Nat: fine i’ll be there with bucky in 20 mins
Y/N: bring gummy bears please thank you ily
-
Steve glanced down at his smartwatch at raised his brows at your last text.
“Gummy bears, really?”
“Gummy bears and beer is literally the best thing Stevie,” You snort, “But of course you wouldn’t know since you’re an old hag, Steven.”
Steve gasps, looking at you in shock. “Did you just-”
You smirk at him, casually walking to the fridge. “You know I did, Rogers.”
You looked inside the fridge, completely not noticing that Steve was already behind you.
You turn around after grabbing a can of Schwepps from the fridge. You jumped seeing Steve towering right behind you. “Jesus, Steve.”
“You wanna try that again?” He held his hands up on both sides of the fridge, eyes twinkling playfully.
You shake your head and pointed at him. “None of the food war crap. I had to clean up the mess the last time.”
Steve gazed down at you. “You better take it back if you don’t want a new mess to clean up.”
You took the time to look at him– really look at him.
Steve's hot, and goodlooking. You’ve already known that. But have you ever really looked at him?
How there’s that weird drain between his brows when he’s frowning, or how his chin is like a shade darker than the rest of his face. There’s a spot on his cheek and his forehead. You’ve never really noticed them before. His eyes always had a shine. The only time you saw it dull was at his dad’s funeral and then again when Sarah Rogers passed away about 4 years after. Your parents took him in straight afterwards.
Those blue eyes are always so intense. Whether he’s trying to get a thread into the needle or reading Paper Towns, Steve’s eyes are so goddamn intense. Like he’s trying to burn a hole through the pages of that stupid book.
“You’re staring,” He noted, even though his eyes were deeply staring into you too.
“You’re staring,” You dutifully told him in return.
“I’m looking,” You see his eyes glancing down to your lips quickly and then back into your eyes.
Your eyes shifted down to his lips too. You know how it feels firsthand. Plump and soft, and it feels so good against your own. The natural pink only compliments his pale skin.
It has never been this intense. He was staring into you and you were gazing into him. His body warmth completely overrides the cold air of the fridge behind you. And his presence was... present, huge. Was this what people called sexual tension?
Damn it, Bucky. And Natasha. And Sam. And your parents.
Fuck.
His gaze switched between your eyes and lips, leaning down slowly and hesitantly. You leaned in too, slowly going up on the tip of your toes.
You could feel his breath on your face.
“We shouldn’t,” You whispered lowly.
“I know,” Steve’s hand still shifted to your jaw, though and he's caressing very lightly.
Your hands trailed up and linked at the back of his neck, and you completely press your lips against his.
Fuck.
It has been at least a year since you’ve been this close to Steve. But this, this was just different.
Steve kisses you back, lips soft but a little rough. It reminds you perfectly of the first time you kissed him he kissed you.
There was a thought in the back of your mind about how this was possibly going to be awkward later. But, fuck. His lips feels too good to stop.
You pull away from him, just about an inch or two away from his lips. “Steve,”
He speaks lowly, “I swear if you tell me that we shouldn’t do this...”
“We shouldn’t.” You breathed deeply. “But we need to talk about this,”
“Talk about what?” His voice raises the slightest bit. “Talk about how I’ve been in lo-”
The doorbell rings.
And just like that, your moment broke.
Steve closed his eyes shut and clenched his teeth, before he completely pulls away from you and turned around.
“Go get the door. I’ll get started on the chicken.”
You listened, stepping out of the kitchen and to towards the door. Your mind was still processing what just happened. Was he about to say... But, Fuck.
Even if he did say it, you have no idea what you’d do.
Your hand curls around the door knob and you pushed it down and pulled the door open.
Nat and Bucky were on the other side, holding up bags and something that looks like 10 bags of gummy bears.
Not that you have any complaints.
“Your face looks weird. What happened?” Natasha brushes past you as she strides into your apartment, dropping her handbag on the dining table and then going into the kitchen.
“Yeah, you look weird. Why does the house seem so quiet?” Bucky asks next, pushing past you and going straight into the kitchen.
“Yeah, cause I just kissed Steve. Of course it’s gonna be like the fucking Kardashians’ house, ain’t it?” You mutter lowly under your breath, knowing damn well they can’t hear you.
“Hey, Steve,” Tasha sets the bags in the counter before she goes over and pecks Steve on his cheek. “You look weird too. What happened between you two?” She glances between you and Steve with a question mark on her face.
“Did you have sex?”
You turn to Bucky almost immediately. “No!”
“Alright, no need to get so defensive, Tiger. Did you kiss?”
The blush on Steve’s cheeks and the silence from you was a good enough answer for the both of then.
“Oh, so something did happen, huh?” Natasha teased, eyes glinting with some sort of evil.
“Shut up.” Steve grunts as he continues dipping small chicken cubes into flour and then into the egg mixture.
“Did you kiss his dick or just his mouth?”
You roll your eyes, stepping towards the sink to wash your hands, completely ignoring Bucky’s question.
You eyed Steve from your peripheral vision. He was silent too.
Well, fuck.

concerns
pairing : peter parker x reader
genre : superhero au
summary : being the girlfriend of a superhero has its perks. You love Peter with all your heart, and so did he. When you voice out your concerns over him getting into danger every night, a storm brews over your relationship. With your life at stake, what will Peter do to fix things?
My first ever marvel / tom writing, hope you enjoy!! :))
Tumblr media
“Pete what’re you doing?”
“Cuddling you.”
“We’re suppose to be studying.” You giggle, leaning back against the headboard momentarily. “May’s gonna walk in.”
“I locked the door.” Peter whispers softly, wiggling his brows at you.
“Why’re you so clingy today?” You hum, smiling as the boy nuzzled his face into the crook of your neck, his arms wrapped tightly around your waist. You lift one hand up to ruffle the curls that you love so much, earning a sigh from him.
“Just tired.” His words getting muffled against your skin. Peter lifts his head up, sending you a sleepy smile as he leans down to connect your lips together.
“Y/N are you staying- woah!”
“It’s nothing!” Peter jumps away from you, the rosiness apparent on both of your cheeks as May stood in the doorway, peeking out from between her fingertips. You clear your throat, straightening yourself back up. “I’d love to stay for dinner.”
“Yeah, okay great.” She drops her hand to her side, nodding slightly. “I’m already preparing it, you two.. have fun.”
“Locked the door huh?” You smirk, hearing the door click shut.
“I swear I did.” Peter rolls his eyes, falling back against his bed. “That was embarrassing.”
“Is it?” You chuckle, leaning down to peck your boyfriend. “Come on, I need help with this chapter.” You pat his forearm, forcing Peter to get back up.
——————————————————————————
“So, how’s it going?” MJ asks, picking at her lunch. “Is dating Peter as amazing as you imagined it to be?”
“Mhmm.” You nod, your attention focused on your physics notebook in front of you. You had a test after this that you really wanted to do well on. You’ve spent the entire weekend studying for this.
“Y/N.” She snaps her fingers in front of your face, successfully gaining your attention for a short while. “Hey, you’ll do fine. Your lunch’s getting cold.”
“MJ, you know how bad I am at physics.” You groan, desperately trying to cramp the formulas into your brain. “Besides, this is graded!”
“You had a Physics genius tutor you the whole of Saturday.” MJ laughs, referring to Peter. “It must have rubbed off onto you a little.”
“Come on, close the damn book.” She orders, snatching the reading material out of your hands before you could protest. “No point doing last minute studying.”
MJ was right. The test wasn’t so bad after all. It was manageable, to your surprise.
Humming to the study playlist you had playing in the background, you click your tongue happily, solving yet another question.
A knock on your window had you peeking up from your pile of notes, a smile gracing your lips as you motion the figure outside your window to enter.
“Hey,” You greet, your smile fading slowly as you watched him limp his way in. “Peter?”
“I’m fine, I’m fine.” He breathes out, slumping into your arms completely as you struggled to support his body weight. “Just a little sore.”
“Come on.” You grunt, laying him back down against your bed. “Take it off.”
He obeyed, tugging his mask off to reveal his battered up features.
“Crap, what the hell did you do?” You whisper harshly, grabbing his face in yours to look over his injuries, only to pull away when he winced slightly. “Sorry..”
“It was.. I don’t know, that guy was strong.”
“Take your suit off..” You whisper, rummaging through your cabinet to grab the medical kit you’re so used to by now.
“Pete that doesn’t look good.” You frown, looking over the gash at the side of his abdomen.
“It’ll heal.” He groans out, eyes squeezed shut. “I had it worse.”
“Stay still..”
“That guy’s still out there.” Peter spoke mostly to himself, pushing his hair back in frustration. You kept quiet, tucking the bandage snugly around his stomach.
“All done.”
“Thanks.” He smiles, running his hand over your knuckles. Normally you would have returned his affection, but not tonight. It probably wasn’t a good idea to get mad at your boyfriend especially when he’s in this state, but you couldn’t stop the anger from bubbling in the pit of your stomach.
“You okay?” Peter asks, sensing that something was off. You just nodded, placing the kit back to where it belongs. “Yeah, just.. it was a long day today.”
“Wanna talk about it?” He pats the spot next to him, scooting over slightly to grant you space.
“No it’s fine. You need to rest.” Finding him a pair of clothes he left at your house the other time, you toss it over to Peter.
“You sure you’re okay?” He asks again, making his way over to you slowly. “You know you can tell me anything.”
“It’s the third time Peter.” You whisper, looking him straight in the eyes. Those eyes that you adored so much. “This is the third time I had to patch you up over the last 2 months.”
“And?”
“What do you mean and? I’m worried!” You exclaim, being careful not to be too loud as your parents were probably sleeping. “You go out every night saving the world, what if you get seriously injured one day? What if you don’t come back? I wouldn’t know because you’d be out there and I won’t be able to find you and..”
Peter presses his lips against yours, something he’s used to doing whenever you rambled too much. This time he frowns however, not feeling you reciprocate.
“Are you that worried about me that you won’t even kiss me back?” He pulls away, resting his forehead against yours.
“And mad.” You spat, narrowing your eyes at him. “You taste like blood.”
“Come on Y/N, this is what I do, and you know I love it! You don’t have to be worried, I know how to take care of myself, I’m Spider-Man.”
“Which is why I can’t stop you can I?” You chuckle softly, running your hand gently over his bandaged injury.
“Not a chance.” Peter smirks, cupping your jaw as he leans down, smiling when you finally caved in and kissed him back.
“I love you.”
——————————————————————————
It’s true, dating a superhero is cool. There’s no doubt about that.
But watching as he fought people everyday but not being able to help? That sucked.
“You’re late.” You tap on your watch, turning your wrist to show Peter the time.
“10 minutes!” He exclaim, making his way into your room and dropping his backpack to the ground. “I got you these.”
“If this is how you’re going to make up for it,” Your eyes widen, grabbing the box of tarts from him. “You can be late all you want Parker.”
“I bet there’s other ways to make up for me being tardy you know..” The boy trailed off, sending you a suggestive look.
“What happened to the Peter that struggled to ask me out on a date?” You giggle, mouth full. “Where did he go?”
“He didn’t go anywhere.” Peter teases, popping a tart into his mouth. “He just got confident.”
“Mmhm.” You hum, moving to your table to get your materials ready for your study session.
“Can we not?” Peter asks, slamming your books back down. “We could watch a movie.”
“Don’t you have a test tomorrow?”
He shrugs, letting out a yawn. “I’m ready for it.”
“I get it, you’re smart.” You shake your head, deciding to give in to his request. Maybe a night off wouldn’t be so bad.
“So..Return of the Jedi?”
——————————————————————————
“Y/N?” Peter shakes you softly, prying your limbs off his body. “Hey.. wake up. I have to go.”
“Now?” You rub your eyes groggily, proceeding to cling onto your boyfriend tighter, earning a low chuckle from him.
“Yeah he’s been active at night. I have to figure it out.”
Obliging, you rolled over to the other side of your bed, opting to cuddle your pillow instead. “Okay, be safe.”
“I will.”
Slinging his bag over his shoulders, Peter presses a chaste kiss to your forehead before sliding your window open, swinging off into the night.
——————————————————————————
“Great.” Peter groans, falling onto the couch as he let out a dry cough. Applying pressure to the gash that got worse, he winced, peeking up to examine his wound. It was healing well after you patched him up the other day. Not anymore.
“Y/N’s gonna kill me..” Peter mutter to himself, staring blankly at the ceiling while waiting for Happy to get back to him.
That guy’s a tough one.
“Here, I’m here.” Happy’s voice echoed throughout the room and Peter slowly got up from his position.
“You do know how to stitch don’t you?” Peter asks, hitting the button on his chest to get out from the suit. “Because I’ll definitely need it this time.”
“This is gonna hurt.” Happy warns, thread and needle already in hand. Peter nods, squeezing his eyes shut as the sharp metal pierced through his skin.
Let’s just say stitches is now on the list of things Peter Parker hates.
——————————————————————————
“Hey.” You smile widely, nudging Peter’s shoulder with yours gently as you saw him in the hallway.
“Hi. You ready to go?”
“Yep,” You rub your hands together excitedly, popping the last syllabus of the word. “I’m starving.”
The hallways were buzzing with students considering classes just ended. Squeezing your way through the crowd, you heard a light groan from the boy when you accidentally elbowed his torso.
“Sorry!” You whisper, your features nothing but apologetic.
“It’s fine.” Peter purses his lips into a tight smile, urging you to continue forward. You frown, noticing the way his brows scrunch together in pain. It’s been a week since you fixed him up. Given his abilities, shouldn’t he have healed by now?
“How was it last night?” You ask casually while you and Peter grabbed lunch. “You have a cut.”
“Oh, as usual, nothing much.” Peter shrugs, his voice cracking a little. “Pretty good actually, only one person got robbed.”
You kept mum nevertheless, even though you knew immediately that he was hiding something. For someone who has such a huge secret to keep, you were surprised at how easily it is to see through your boyfriend when he lied.
Well, he did make it super obvious.
——————————————————————————
“I don’t see your shirt anywhere Y/N.” Peter scratches his head, rummaging through his closet to look for a grey sweater. The clothing you’ve claim to have left in his room when you last visited. “You sure you left it here?”
“I didn’t, it’s at home.” You stated truthfully, folding your arms together. “Pete, could you lift your shirt up?”
“What?”
“What? I just wanted to see how you’re healing.”
“I’m healing.. fine. Why’d you ask?” He waves you off, sitting on the edge of his bed.
Rolling your eyes, you stepped forward, gripping the clothing in your hand and lifting it up before he could protest.
“You call that healing fine?” You scoff, his shirt pulling back into place once Peter tugs your wrist forcefully away. “How bad was it last night?”
You didn’t have to lift his shirt to know that there were more injuries hiding underneath there.
“It’s just a cut Y/N, I don’t know why you’re getting so worked up about it. I’ve dealt with worse things before just so you know.”
“Yeah, just a cut now. You might be sliced in half the next time.”
Peter snaps his head up to you, his eyes staring at yours with a hint of anger. “Why do you have to be like this?”
“Like what?” You frown in disbelief, not liking where this was going. “I’m worried about you.”
“Well I’m just saying that you don’t have to be.” Peter rolls his eyes, his curls falling into his face. “I know what I’m doing Y/N. I won’t get killed.”
“Why do I even bother having this conversation with you..” You mumble, brushing your hair out of your face.
“You started it first.” Peter accuses, his chest heaving up and down.
“Because I care about you! Okay?!”
“Maybe you care too much! I don’t need it, seriously!”
You gulp, fists balled tightly against your side as you processed his words. Silence fell upon the room, neither of you speaking a word after the outburst.
“Just leave Y/N, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“You know if Stark was still around, he’d care just as much.”
Grabbing your bag off the ground, you glanced at Peter, closing the door shut.
“Hey, everything okay there?” May asks the moment you clicked Peter’s door shut, scaring you a little. Blinking away the tears that you could feel forming, you gave her a tight smile, nodding softly.
“Yeah, yeah of course.”
With how loud the both of you had been shouting, she must have heard everything.
“I know where you’re coming from.” May sighs, rubbing your arm reassuringly. “I feel the same way sometimes.”
“He’s just.. stressed. Give him some time, I’m sure he didn’t mean any of that.”
“I know he doesn’t.” You shrug, silently thanking her for being so caring. “I should go, see you soon May.”
You hate fighting. You’ve always hated confrontation in general. Especially when it’s with someone you loved. You’ve never really fought with Peter throughout the 6 months of your relationship. It was usually all childish bickering.
You felt bad, definitely. Maybe he was right.. maybe you were being too clingy?
——————————————————————————
“Quick question, did you guys fight?”
“Is it that obvious?”
“Yeah.” Ned snorts, looking back and forth between you and Peter. “It kinda is.”
“Great to know.” You reply sarcastically, leaning your head against your palms as you aimlessly copied whatever was written on the board.
At lunch, you stuck to MJ while Peter did the same with Ned. They felt awkward. So did you.
So this is what fighting with your partner feels like.
As much as you were completely over the fight, you wanted to give Peter space. That’s what he wanted isn’t it?
——————————————————————————
Two days later, still nothing.
Chemistry’s the one class that the both of you would sit together. Mainly because it’s the only class that neither of you had other friends in.
Even with sitting next to each other, the tension was still there.
Looking over to Peter, you could care less if he caught you staring at this point. You just wanted to look at him.
He had a small cut on his right cheekbone that wasn’t there before.
Resisting the urge to reach out and touch him, you bite the inside of your cheek, gripping your pen tighter.
When all of a sudden, Peter’s hand found yours.
His grip was extremely tight, and when you looked over, you notice how his hair was standing.
“What’s wrong?” You whisper, his frown evident.
“Something’s wrong.” He whispers back, eyes darting back and forth out of the window. “I’m sensing something.”
“I need to go. Stay clear if anything happens, you hear me?” Peter warns, grabbing his bag swiftly and dashing out of the classroom.
“He’s got a.. his lunch was old.” You help him cover up. Your teacher was not pleased to say the least.
——————————————————————————
No calls, nothing.
You were worried sick. Every single time you call Peter, it sent you straight to voicemail. It’s been 7 hours since he dashed out of class, surely whatever happened would have been over by now?
A knock on your window had you jumping out of bed, and you swore you couldn’t have smiled brighter seeing the familiar red and blue suit appear outside your house.
So much so that you didn’t realise that it was a little..odd.
“Peter?” You whisper, grabbing his arm to help him in. “You don’t know how worried I was. I’m sorry about the fight, okay? I know I shouldn’t have interfered but I was.. whatever, you get what I mean.”
You frown when he wouldn’t budge, crouching outside your windowsill with zero intentions to enter. “Pete? Are you still mad at me?”
Tilting your head to the side in confusion, you watch as your boyfriend pull his mask off to reveal, well, someone that wasn’t your boyfriend.
Well, shit.
“Jumping into action, you grab onto the window handles, desperately pulling it down with as much force you could muster.
That guy was much quicker however, grabbing your wrists with the speed of lightning as you struggled against him to no avail.
You should have followed Peter to the gym more often.
“You miss your boyfriend that much? Let’s take you to him shall we?”
With a hit to the neck, your vision went black.
——————————————————————————
You woke up to a sore at the back of your neck. Reaching your hand up to soothe it, you realise you couldn’t.
Jolting to your senses, the memories came flooding back to you as you tugged at your wrists. They were bounded behind your back.
Frantically, you took in your surroundings, finding nothing. Everything was pitch black, it was almost as if you were blind.
“Hello?” You call out hoarsely, your voice echoing through the room, sending shivers down your spine. You continued wriggling through your constraints, hoping that the rope will magically break somehow, only to find yourself hissing in pain when they dug deep into your skin.
“Okay..” You mumble to yourself quietly, panic rising in your chest. “It’s fine, you’re fine, Peter will find you. He will.”
“Trying to comfort yourself?”
You flinch at the voice, whipping your head towards the source of it. “Who are you?”
“You don’t need to know, young lady.” He chuckles, the sound of his footsteps coming closer to you radiating off the ground. “All I need is for your boyfriend to know that you’re in my hands.”
You gulp, inching further into the chair that did nothing to protect you. You squeezed your eyes shut, finding his face dangerously close to yours.
“Let’s go wait for the boy, shall we?”
——————————————————————————
“Oh god..” You blink back the tears, desperately trying to hold them back in. The wind tonight wasn’t helping your situation at all, you being merely in a t-shirt and sweats.
At this point, these guys standing in front of you wasn’t even what you were afraid of. They would be, only if you weren’t at the edge of a 30 floor building’s rooftop right now. You’re terribly afraid of heights.
“You sure you didn’t accidentally kill him off?” The guy whose name you recognise as Mac spoke up. That’s what the other guys have been calling him.
“I’m sure he had it worse than getting hit by a train, right?” The guy holding onto you asks, tilting your chair forward in the process. You whimper slightly, the tears now rolling down your cheeks freely.
“If he doesn’t come in the next 10, just throw her off.” Mac grunts, walking down the roof.
Breathe Y/N, Peter’s gonna come soon.
And he did. Your boyfriend appeared soon enough, his suit dirtied in random places.
“You shouldn’t have touched her.” He growls, webbing the two other guys down immediately.
“Y/N..” He breathes out, grabbing you off the edge and untangled your ropes frantically. “You’re okay, it’s okay.”
Shaking your head, you tried to get a grip of yourself to warn Peter that he wasn’t done yet.
“Pete the guy, he went downstairs, he-”
“Peter Parker.”
Freezing in place, you gulp, eyes darting to meet the figure standing behind both of you. Peter tensed, his arm tightening under yours.
“Happy will be here soon.” He whispers, shooting a smile you can’t see. “Just stay here while I take care of him.”
Your eyes darted back and forth between the fighting pair, everything moving past you like a whirlwind. Opting to squat near the corner, you tried your best to shield yourself, hoping that the villain would somehow forget about your existence on the roof.
You thought wrong.
Taking advantage of Peter being on the ground, the man strides over to you and picked you up with ease, lifting you off the edge once again.
Tears made their way down your cheeks for the countless time that night as you gripped onto his arm for dear life. You could hear the faint sound of yells and pleas, but you were too scared to care.
Before you know it, you’re falling.
“Y/N!”
Everything was a blur, the vision of the roof getting distant with every passing second. This is it. You’re about to die.
Within the next second, you felt a warm body collide into yours, hugging you close for dear life as you hit the ground with a loud thud, surprisingly unscathed.
“Are you okay?” Peter asks from below you, his voice coming out as a groan. You clung tightly to him, a sob escaping your lips as you nod weakly, frightened out of your wits to say anything else.
All of a sudden, you heard what seemed like knives against grass as Peter switches your position, shielding you from whatever the hell was raining down upon you two.
“Y/N I need you to listen to me.” He whispers hastily, hands reaching down to your waist. “Happy’s here, I’m gonna swing you up to the jet okay? Just hang on to me.”
You nod once again because at this point, what choice did you have? Peter had only took you swinging through New York once and due to how new your relationship was, you didn’t tell him about your fear. Safe to say, that was the last time you’ve ever glide through the city.
Burying your face in the crook of his neck, you kept your eyes squeezed shut until you could no longer feel the cool breeze of the night and you felt yourself standing on something.
“Be careful.” You sniff, letting go of your boyfriend as he sets you down inside the jet. He nods, wiping your tear swiftly before shooting a web, swinging away from you and the opening of the jet closes.
“You good?” Happy yells from the pilot’s seat, glancing back slightly to look at you.
“Yeah.” You assure, hugging yourself closely as you sat down. “Just a little shaken. Where are we going?”
“Do you wanna go home?”
“No, my parents would freak out if they saw me like this.” You rejected the offer, shaking your head profusely. “I don’t have my phone with me.. could you get MJ to tell my parents I’m staying at hers tonight? They weren’t home when I left so..”
“Sure, easy.”
“Thanks Happy.”
——————————————————————————
The Avengers Facility was definitely different than what you imagined. Sure, you’ve heard about if from Peter but seeing it for yourself was.. unreal.
Tapping your foot impatiently against the ground, you grip your glass of water tighter in your hands as Peter was still not back yet. You pull your knees to your chest, completely engulfed in Peter’s scent. Happy had given you his clothes in the facility for you to change into.
“Y/N?” Your ears perk up at the mention of your name and you shot up immediately, relief flooding your body as Peter stood in front of you, absolutely worn out.
“Oh thank god..” You breathe out, a smile tugging your lips as you engulfed him in a hug.
“Hey..” He chuckles, hands wrapping around your waist. “You good?”
“Mhmm.” You nod, not really wanting to relive tonight’s incident again. Pulling away to look into his eyes, Peter smiles slightly at the way your brows scrunch together as you examine his beaten up features.
 “Come on.” You mumble, grabbing his hand and tugging him along. “Let’s get you cleaned up.”
“Actually,” You stop halfway, shaking your head at your stupidity. “Lead the way, I don’t know where I’m going, this place is huge.”
“Tell me about it.” Peter hums, pushing you towards what you suppose is the medical room.
——————————————————————————
“I’m sorry.” You whisper, dabbing the antiseptic solution against Peter’s chest as he leans against the counter. “I shouldn’t have got so worked up about it, I know how you feel about being Spider-Man, I just.. yeah. Won’t do it again. Promise.”
“Pretty sure I was the one being an asshole, but I don’t mind you apologising first. I could get used to this concept.”
“Shut up.” You push his shoulder playfully, your lips curling into a smile.
“I’m sorry too.” He finally whispers back, guilt evident in his voice. “I shouldn’t have gotten so defensive, I know you mean well. If I hadn’t caught you in time, I wouldn’t know how..”
“Just.. be more wary when you do this okay? The world needs you. I need you.” You whisper the last part.
“Anything for you. I promise, nothing of that sort will ever happen again. I’ll keep you safe.” Peter stares, his eyes darting down to your lips. Realising his intentions, you lift your head slightly as his lips brush across yours before he closes the space between you two.
His hand traces up to your jaw as he cups your face, pulling you flush against him to deepen the kiss. You unconsciously smile into the kiss, goosebumps lining your skin as Peter slips one hand under your shirt, tracing patterns against your back.
“May wasn’t kidding when she said you two will get frisky.” Peter groans, burying his head in the crook of your neck as Happy’s voice echoed through the corridor. You laugh, the heat creeping up to your cheeks, your hands reaching up to brush through his locks.
“I swear, I’m investing in a door lock.” Peter mumbles against your skin, his voice muffled.
“You probably should.” You hum along, tapping his forearm lightly. “Get up, put a shirt on or something.”
“How? You’re wearing mine.” He points out, motioning towards his sweater engulfing your small frame.
“Here.” You snort, tossing him one that you found earlier on. He can’t possibly only have one piece of clothing in this massive building.
Pulling the fabric over his head, Peter pauses for a second, his eyes narrowing into a tight line.
“How did.. Happy! Did you visit my Aunt just now?”

Idol Lovers
Tumblr media
Pairing: Jungkook x Reader
Genre: Majority Fluff, but also a bit of angst and smut in there. (Supportive Jungkook, Jealous Jungkook, Loving Jungkook, Seductive Jungkook, you name it!)
Word Count: 6.6k
(A/N): Again my love for Vixx comes out. This is an AU where Vixx has one female member and it's you, the maknae of the group. You had caught the eyes of many fans and idols alike, but one idol already had your heart, and you had his as well. But dating in secret was a bit of a challenge, especially when your Vixx Oppas didn’t know.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Being an idol was certainly not an easy life. But it was the life you chose, and you wouldn’t have it any other way. You weren’t in it for the fame, you were in it because of your love for the arts, the love for the music. This was the way you expressed it, and what better way to do it then next to some of your best friends now. You were the group Vixx’s maknae, and the only girl of the group. The bond you guys had was so strong that your performances were always really powerful. You treasured them and they treasured you, they were the brothers you wish you had.
Every time a male idol expressed that you piqued their interest, they intervened because of one, you didn’t feel the same way, or two, they didn’t think they were good enough for you. But they didn’t know that you already belonged to an idol, the one and only Jeon Jungkook of BTS. You two had met back in high school, but it was just recently he expressed his feelings for you. You accepted them, and your relationship has been strong ever since, but the only thing is, you kept it a secret from your Vixx Oppas while he kept it a secret from his BTS Hyungs.
~
“Yah! (Y/N)! Who said my little sister could look this good! Nobody can take their eyes off of you!” The familiar voice of N, the leader of the group shouted from the chair as he got his hair done. You had just emerged from your dressing room, you get one separate from the boys for obvious reasons, but you all get your makeup and hair done at the same place.
Today was the MBC Music Festival and you guys were going to be performing Shangri La, one of your hits from 2017. The theme for this year was old hits so you and the boys had decided on bringing back Shangri La. The boys were dressed in the black floral silk men's kimonos while you were dressed in a black and cherry blossom decorated kimono. All of the biggest stars of the year were present, including your boyfriend, Jeon Jungkook from BTS. They were just two doors down in their dressing room and you were able to hear them screaming and shouting at each other playfully.
“Oppa,” you chuckled and plopped into the open make up seat next to him to get your hair done and makeup ready, “You flatter me, but have you seen you guys? You six look like literal princes!”
“I am prince Hyukie!” Hyuk was sitting behind you playing a game on his phone, “But our little sister looks like a Princess!”
Your stylist began working with your hair while you were on your phone, “Stopppppp,” you blushed and in the back of your mind you realized Jungkook was going to see you like this, “If I didn’t have my amazing stylist Unnie,” you looked up at her and gave her a cheeky smile, “I wouldn’t be getting this flattery!”
As soon as your stylist left you, the boys and you were just relaxing in the room. Ravi and Hongbin were knocked out, Hyuk was still playing a game on his phone, N looked like he was texting someone while Leo and Ken were watching videos.
You were scrolling through instagram when you got a text message on your phone, the sender had the contact name “🐰”. It was your nickname for Jungkook on your phone. Since your relationship was practically a secret from everyone, you guys had to resort to that just in case if one of your members felt extra nosy. His nickname for you in his phone was, “🐷”. You hated it, but he loved it because you can eat just as much as he does.
2:30 P.M 🐰.- Jagggiii~
2:32 P.M. 🐷- Yes Oppa?
2:33 P.M. 🐰- I want to see you :( Are you ready? Can I see you for a little? I’m done and the Hyungs and I are just chilling now doing nothing.
2:34 P.M. 🐷- I gotta figure out how to escape for a little bit :( I’m currently sandwiched between N and Ken Oppa right now. We’re going out to our seats in about 20 minutes.
2:35 P.M. 🐰- Then spare me 10 please? I wanna see my beautiful girl ;-;
2:36 P.M. 🐷- Alright fine, I can never turn you down, where do I go?
2:37 P.M. 🐰- The staircase at the end of the hall. Nobody goes in there so meet me a floor above the entrance <3 Be there at 2:40!
You closed your phone and sighed, “I’m gonna go for a walk okay?” You looked up at N and Ken.
“Are you okay? Do you want us to go with you?” N looked concerned. It wasn’t surprising though because he always cared about the wellbeing of his members. That’s what made him such a mom sometimes.
“I’m okay. I just need to stretch my legs,” you stood up and smiled, “I might go peep and say hi to Ailee Unnie while I’m out. I won’t be long. 10ish minutes probably.” And before anyone else said anything, you began to sneak away. When you got into the hallway, you noticed the door to the staircase closing and Jungkook was right, nobody was on that end. You made a break for it and then successfully snuck into the staircase. You went up one flight of stairs just as Jungkook instructed and sure enough, he was standing right there with open arms.
“My god,” he took your hands into his and leaned in to give you a soft kiss, “You’re stunning. Absolutely gorgeous. You look like a goddess,” He kept on pecking your cheeks and your lips with soft kisses, “Man every male idol is going to have their eyes on you, I guarantee it. But little do they know, you’re my girlfriend and mine only.” Jungkook was dressed in a long bright orange jumpsuit with a white hoodie under. They were performing GoGo and this was the outfit that he used to wear with it.
“Hi my bunny,” you giggled and kissed his cheek, “I missed you. By the way, you are a literal hunk, you know that?” You wrapped your arms around his neck and looked into his eyes that seemed to always sparkle 24/7.
“I missed you too,” he soon had you in his warm embrace, “I can’t get over how absolutely stunning you look right now. Let’s take a picture!” He took out his phone and held it up. The two of you were close together in the frame. You held up a peace sign while Jungkook gave his iconic, award winning, smile.
“Send me that please Oppa~” you kissed his cheek as he wrapped his arm around your waist.
“Already on it,” he quickly opened up your message thread and sent it, “This 10 minutes went by way too fast, but we both have to get back now.”
You looked up at him, “Have a great performance okay my bunny? I’ll be cheering you on!”
“And I will be cheering you on my princess,” he leaned in and gave you another soft peck on the lips, “Now you go first. I’ll see you later. I love you.”
Everytime he expressed his love for you, you squealed on the inside. It was still unbelievable that the Jeon Jungkook of BTS was in love with you and you loved him. “I love you too bunny,” you let go of him and began to walk towards the stairs, “I really do.” And with that, you began making your way back to the room with your members.
When you got back, Hongbin and Ravi were just barely waking up. N saw you come back and he smiled warmly at you, “Are you good now?”
You flashed him a thumbs up, “All good Hakyeon mommy!” You plopped down on the couch next to him and leaned your head on his shoulder, “How much time do we have before we have to go out?”
The 93 liners were fully awake by this time. Ravi stretched and then looked at you, “I hope soon, cause that was a really good nap and I didn’t want to wake up yet.”
“Yeah I could tell,” you chuckled, “You and Bin Oppa were drooling”.
“Yeah...it was a freaking pool.” Hyuk was in the same position you left him in, still playing games on his phone. All of you burst into laughter when there was a sudden visitor at your door.
Your eyes widened because it was your boyfriend and his members.
“Oh Jin my friend!” Ken jumped up to embrace his friend in a hug.
“Brother!” Jin cheered in return.
The friendship that Jungkook’s hyung had with your Ken Oppa was really strong. Whenever those two were together...it was definitely a show. Especially because those two are on their own level in terms of...weirdness.
“Hi guys!” N waved from next to you, your head still on his shoulder. But then you saw Jungkook’s eyes behind Namjoon’s shoulders eyeing you with an eyebrow raised. You sat up straight taking your head off of N’s shoulders before smiling at him warmly. His eyes softened and you knew he wouldn’t be mad at you for that.
“(Y/N)-ah!” Hoseok smiled at you, “You look absolutely stunning! Like a Princess!”
Jungkook’s eyes widened and his mouth dropped open. This was the first time one of his members complimented you on your looks. You’ve had other idols do it in front of Jungkook before, but his members are a whole different story.
“T-thank you Hoseok-ah.” You smiled at him. You were more timid and shy than usual and Hyuk was able to notice.
He sat next to you and placed a hand on your knee, making Jungkook’s eyes widen, “Are you okay Princess?” That was Hyuk’s nickname for you. Out of the boys, he was the closest to you because of age.
Jungkook nudged J-Hope, “Yah, don’t make her uncomfortable.”
“Hey!” N’s eyes lit up, “Our schedule is actually free tonight after this, would you guys like to come over for some dinner if you guys are free?”
Namjoon nodded, “We surprisingly have a day off tomorrow and are free after this too...so sure! We’ll just go home and change and head over to you all! Would you like us to bring anything?”
“Well…” N looked at you, “Our little sister has been craving chicken so we’ll take care of that. Would you guys like to take care of the drinks?”
“Alcohol!” Jimin cheered.
“Soda!” Namjoon hit him on the back of the head.
You giggled making everyone's heads turn towards you. Jungkook had the most loving look towards you.
“W-what?” you cocked your head to the side innocently.
“You literally have the cutest laugh.” Jin smiled at you.
“Doesn’t she?” Hyuk cheered and put an arm around your shoulder, “She’s too precious.”
You glanced over at Jungkook and he had an expression on your face that you’ve never seen on him before. He raised an eyebrow at you and also glared at his hyungs. Was he possibly getting jealous?
“Well,” Jin smiled, “I’ll text Ken when we’re on the way later! Have a good performance!”
And soon enough you guys were left alone again. This would be the first time Jungkook would be coming over to your place. Granted you lived with the boys, but how were you two gonna do without exposing your relationship to everyone else.
“Well, let’s get out to our seats shall we?” N gestured for everyone to get up. You all walked together onto the stage and saw idols already sitting in their respective rows on the sides. You quickly scanned around for Jungkook and saw him looking at you. He smiled warmly and secretly gave you a little finger heart. You flashed one back to him before being led to your row. You and the boys were on the opposite end of them, both on the rows that are equivalent to stage level.
You sat in between Ravi and Hyuk and yawned, “Is anyone else sleepy? Because I am.”
“I’m not cause I napped,” Ravi chuckled, “You decided to go out and see your secret boyfriend I bet.”
Your eyes widened, “W-what?” Did your members know about you and Jungkook?
“I’m kidding,” Ravi laughed, “I know you’d tell us even if you had your eye on someone anyways.”
You glanced across the stage and saw Jungkook being teased by his Hyungs. His iconic bunnylike smile blessed your vision and you smiled warmly at the sight. You sighed and then looked up at Hyuk, “I am so taking a nap before the BTS Oppas come by later.”
“I’m with you on that one.”
Soon enough the show began, and you and the boys were backstage getting ready. It was a commercial and a break time, so the stage crew was hustling on the stage getting it ready for your performance. Your stylist was doing some last minute touch ups on your makeup. Scanning your surroundings, you saw Jungkook flash you a thumbs up. You gave him a finger heart back before Hyuk looked at you.
“Who was that for?” He raised an eyebrow at you.
“Nobody Oppa,” you smiled at him, panicking a bit on the inside, “Let’s do this.”
The lights dimmed down and you got in your places for your performance. This was always your happy place. No matter how tiring it is, you loved it. You forgot about the world around you and got lost in performance. That’s what made you such a great artist.
By the time Shangri La was done everyone was up and out of their seats, giving you and the boys a standing ovation. Starlights were cheering, waving the lightsticks and chanting your names. The show had gone to commercial and you guys had the opportunity to say something to Starlights.
“Our Starlight babies!” N cheered into the mic, “We hope we put on a great performance for you guys!” That caused the crowd to erupt into screams.
The mic was then handed over to Hyuk, “We worked hard to put this together, and we’re very glad to have all of your support.” He held up a finger heart.
Then you had the mic to close out Vixx’s time on the stage, “We thank Starlights for being so supportive of us. We’ll continue to work hard for you all. We love you Starlights!” That had caused the whole crowd to erupt into cheers. You and the boys waved goodbye and headed backstage. As you pass BTS’ seats, Jungkook gives you a finger heart and a kissy face. You blushed lightly and waved to him secretly before you guys got ready to go back and prepare for their whole group coming over for dinner.
~
You and the boys flooded back into your dorm and you made your way back to your room. Hyuk followed behind and tapped his shoulder, “(Y/N)-ah? Can I ask you something?”
Right as you opened the door, you peaked your head over your shoulder and saw Hyuk twiddling with his thumbs. You smiled softly at him, “What is it Hyuk Oppa? Can I take off my makeup first?”
“Ah yeah go ahead, I’ll come back when you’re ready.”
You nodded and then closed the door to our bedroom. You sighed as you plopped onto your bed, did Hyuk want to talk to you because he possibly saw you and Jungkook earlier? That couldn’t have been it...could it?
“Bangtan Boys are on their way! I ordered chicken!” You heard N yell from the hallway.
“Bunny is coming…” you muttered to yourself and then your eyes widened, “Oh my god bunny is coming.” You were panicking because 1, your boyfriend is coming over, 2, nobody knows he’s your boyfriend...at least to your knowledge and 3, you didn’t want to look embarrassing in front of him.
You began scrubbing off your makeup. As you were doing that your phone lit up indicating you got a text message from Jungkook.
8:01 P.M. 🐰-How in the world am I going to keep my hands off of you tonight?
8:03 P.M. 🐷-I have no idea. I’m freaking out knowing I might expose something? What happens if we’re found out?
8:04 P.M. 🐰-I mean eventually everyone will know...but if it were to be tonight we’ve just gotta be prepared. I’ll do my best though to make sure it won’t be hard if it comes to that point.
8:06 P.M. 🐷- Me too bunny :) How far are you guys?
8:08 P.M. 🐰-...coming up the elevator...see you in a minute my piggy.
8:09 P.M. 🐷- 😐
You quickly put your hair up into a bun, changed into a pair of leggings and one of Jungkook’s hoodies, which was fairly big on you. You stared at yourself in the mirror and your eyes widened, “I can’t wear this… his hyungs might recognize this hoodie.” But before you had a chance to change, the doorbell rang and you heard Ken running and screaming to get to the door. Him and Jin were definitely an interesting pair…
You were reaching into the closet when Ravi burst into your room, “Let’s go outside and see everyone!” He dragged you out and you saw your members all sitting around the living room with BTS.
“There’s the Princess of the evening! The one that stole the show!” Jimin patted the empty spot in between him and Jungkook for you to sit with them. You glanced at Jungkook and he just raised his eyebrows at you.
“Jungkook-ah,” Jin looked over in your guys direction, “Don’t you have that same hoodie?”
Well shit, that came faster than you thought…
“I do.” Was all that managed to come out of his mouth.
“This is my brothers,” you chimed in, “He left it last time he visited and I just keep forgetting to give it back to him.” Saved it...well at least you hoped.
“The chicken got delivered in the lobby!” N jumped up, “Hyukie, (Y/N), do you guys want to go get it?”
You nodded and walked to the door with Hyuk. You were glad to get away from that situation, even though you didn’t want to leave Jungkook’s side, things got awkward real quick.
When you and Hyuk got in the elevator a sigh escaped your lips.
“Can I ask you something that I’ve been meaning to ask you earlier?” Hyuk said out of the blue.
“Sure Hyukie Oppa,” you smiled at him, “What is it?”
“How do you feel about me?” He stared at you seriously, “I’ve grown to really like you more than my best friend (Y/N). I want to know how you feel about me.”
Your eyes widened, you thought Hyuk had suspected you and Jungkook...but this wasn’t what you were expecting. “H-hyukie Oppa…” you looked up at him, “I-,” you sighed, “I don’t have the same feeling back...I’m sorry. I’ve only ever seen you as my best friend. That’s it…”
“It’s because you’re already seeing someone isn’t it?” He looked away from you and then down at the floor.
“H-huh?” the elevator doors opened revealing the lobby. You and Hyuk made your way to the empty front desk.
He rang the bell then looked at you, “I know your dating Jungkook-ssi,” he got the chicken from the receptionist then looked back at you, “I got curious, and I know it was wrong of me, but I followed you early when you secretly met with him in the staircase. My feelings about you are true...but I just wanted to see if the reason you’d say no was because of Jungkook.”
“Hyuk Oppa…” you stared at him as he walked towards the elevators.
“Why didn’t you tell any of us you were dating him?” He pressed the button waiting for the elevator to arrive back at the lobby.
“I-...I just really really do love him.” but before you could answer completely the elevator doors opened.
“Let’s go back up before they all wonder where we are...your boyfriend is probably worried sick.” He walked into the elevator with you following.
“Oppa, I’m sorry...I truly am. But please, Bunny and I aren’t ready to tell anyone yet, so can you please keep this a secret?” You looked at him with pleading eyes.
“You guys have nicknames for each other already,” he chuckled to himself, “Guess he beat me to it when it comes to your heart…”
“Oppa are you mad at me?”
“No… I’m just heartbroken… but I can’t do anything about it. I just hope he’s treating you like the Princess you really are.” The doors opened and soon you were back in front of your front door.
As you reached for the handle you could hear N and Namjoon talking.
“Hyuk-ssi and (Y/N)-ah seem like they would be a cute couple.” Namjoon’s voice boomed on the other side of the door.
“We’ve been wanting them to date for the longest time, but as much as Hyuk-ah likes her...I don’t think she likes him back.” N sighed and looked at the other leader.
“I feel like one of my members will snatch her up if he doesn’t soon. She’s a literal Princess.” He chuckled and both their voices soon disappeared from the door. Hyuk looked at you in a concern then opened the door.
You quietly helped him carry all the food onto the table laid out in your guys living room. But you just didn’t feel like eating anymore. You sat in between Jungkook and Jimin. Jungkook’s eyes quickly looked down at you, full of concern for his secret lover.
“Are you okay, jagi?” he asked you quietly without getting much notice from anyone. Except for Hyuk who was sitting across from you looking at you with concern also.
You nodded in disagreement. You felt tears starting to build up.
You stood up, “I-I’m not feeling well right now,” you smiled at everyone through your tear brimmed eyes, “Please have a good dinner, I need to close my eyes for a bit.” And before anyone could answer, you scurried away to your room. You closed the door behind you and plopped on your bed, tears streaming down your face.
You were bent out of shape because of many reasons. Both Namjoon and all of your members think you and Hyuk would be good together. Heck, Hyuk even has feelings for you. How would everyone feel when they found out you and Jungkook were dating? Would it cause tensions within your group? Would his hyungs get mad at him? You didn’t think it would get this conflicting.
When you scurried away to your room, all the boys looked confused, well except for Hyuk. Jungkook was full of worry and concern, it was heavily visible on his face. He wanted to run after you, see what was wrong, why you were bothered. And he wanted to hold you in his arms. But he knew he couldn’t do so just yet.
“Is she okay?” Yoongi asked out of concern.
“I may have upset her…” Hyuk sighed and leaned his head back, “Someone should go check on her.”
“Should I?” N stood up being the mom he is.
“I think Jungkook-ssi should. Those two are high school friends after all.” Hyuk looked at Jungkook and nodded approvingly.
He got up and made his way to your bedroom. Jungkook knocked softly, “Jagi?” Luckily he was far enough that nobody could hear him call you that, “I’m coming in okay?” Jungkook opened the door and saw you curled up on your bed crying, back towards him.
You turned around hiding your face in your pillow, “Bunny…”
He smiled softly at the sight and sat on your bed with you. He helped you up and straight into his arms, “My piggy,” his voice was so comforting to hear, “What’s wrong?”
You wrapped your arms around him and buried your face into his chest, “We’ve been found out bunny…”
His hands soon found themselves playing with the bun on your head, “Found out? How so? Was it Sanghyuk Hyung? He said he upset you.”
You heard Ken and Jin playfully screaming animal noises in the background, “It was Hyukie Oppa...the way he just came out with it was so overwhelming...he told me he likes me, but he also saw us earlier in the staircase. What if our members aren’t happy when they find out? I don’t want to ruin any of the bonds we have with our own groups. What if they get mad at us and then fights erupt or there’s tension like in those Kdramas? I don’t want that to happen with any of us!” You looked up at him, tears were staining your cheeks.
Jungkook kissed your forehead, “Your heart belongs to me right? Were you honest with me, Sanghyuk Hyung and most importantly yourself?”
“I told Hyukie Oppa how much I really really love you. My heart does belong to you bunny oppa, I know how much I love you. It’s so much.” You cried holding him.
“You’re silly you know,” he placed his hand under your chin and looked up at you, “I love you so much too, and regardless of how our members react to the news, I still love you as much as I did 10 seconds ago.” He planted a soft kiss on your lips.
“Will this night end with all our members knowing that you and I are dating?”
“That might be the case, but I think it’s time that we tell them too. I’ll take care of it, but we won’t tell them right away, but they will know before we go home okay? I think hiding it has gone on long enough,” he looked down at you and poked your cheek, “I don’t like when my piggy is sad.”
“Why do you still call me piggy,” you pouted, “I’m not a piggy. I just have a good appetite.”
“If you can eat as much as me, then you’re a piggy. But you’re my piggy.” Jungkook started pecking kisses all around your face and even down to your neck.
You started giggling, “Oppa that tickles, but what if someone sees us?”
He started pecking kisses on your collarbone, “Even dressed like this you're irresistible. Babygirl you’re beautiful in anything you wear.” Your collarbone was a newly discovered weak spot as a small moan escaped your mouth. You quickly clamped your lips shut, “S-shh, you’re gonna make me make noises I’ve never done before!” You glared at Jungkook playfully.
Jungkook laughed and gave you a small love bite on your collarbone, “I’ll take note of that sweet spot for later!” He smiled at you warmly, “But there’s that smiling face I’m in love with. Come, let’s go back out because you need to eat your dinner.”
“Are we going back out as a couple? Or still hiding it?”
“Sanghyuk Hyung is the only one who knows right?” he stood up and wrapped his arms around your waist.
You nodded, “Just Hyukie Oppa.”
“Then we’ll wait for the right time to tell them,” he kissed you, “but for now we just gotta make sure you eat your dinner. Okay?”
You nodded and hugged him before walking to the door, “I love you Bunny.”
“I love you too my piggy.” He followed you out of the room and you guys both made your way back...to the chaotic mess in the living room. Ken and Jin were making weird animal noises while Namjoon and N were drinking together. Suga, Hongbin and Ravi were all in front of the Tv playing video games while Jimin, Taehyung, Hoseok, Leo and Hyuk were just sitting at the table talking.
“My princess!” N cheered, “Are you feeling better?”
“I am Hakyeon mommy!” You ran and sat next to him, “I’m hungry.”
Jungkook plopped down next to Hyuk and you raised an eyebrow at him. Then he immersed himself into conversation with that group.
“Namjoon-ssi was just telling me how good Jungkook is at comforting people, it seemed like it worked with you.” N looked down at you as you ate your chicken.
“Mhm,” you nodded as you held a drumstick in your hand, “Jungkook Oppa is really sweet, kind, caring, it’s always nice being with him.” You smiled at the thought of your boyfriend. He truly did care for you, and you couldn’t be more grateful for him.
“The way you talk about him (Y/N)-ah, sounds like you’re in love with him!” Namjoon teased you playfully, completely unaware that what he said was true.
Your eyes widened and you started blushing. You almost choked on the chicken you were eating, “I-...Namjoon Oppa, you almost made me choke on my chicken.” N handed you a glass of water laughing.
“You take good care of your members Sunbae,” Namjoon chimed in, “My members say I’m destructive.”
“Well this is my princess,” he wrapped his arms around you, “and Hyukie is our baby, I have to take care of my children.” The conversation with N and Namjoon really began to lighten your mood.
Meanwhile Jungkook sat with Jimin, Taehyung and Hyuk, their conversation was on a much more different level.
“Taehyung-ah would not get off of his games all night,” Jimin whined, “Sanghyuk Hyung, do you ever have that issue with your members? Is (Y/N) a gamer?”
“You know...I don’t know what she does behind those closed doors of her bedroom,” Hyuk chuckled, “She loves sleep so I don’t think so.”
“(Y/N) isn’t a gamer,” Jungkook chuckled, “She sucks at games. She always dies.”
“I didn’t know you and (Y/N)-ah were so close.” Taehyung raised an eyebrow at him.
“They are high school friends after all,” Hyuk chuckled, “Jungkook-ssi, would you like to see my Overwatch themed set up?” Hyuk clearly didn’t have a set up like that, he was just trying to get Jungkook away because he wanted to ask him some questions.
“Oh boy do I?!” Jungkook jumped up and followed Hyuk, sounding like a little kid. You smiled at the scene of Jungkook, it made your heart flutter.
Jungkook and Hyuk went into Hyuk’s room and Hyuk closed the door, “I don’t really have an overwatch set up, I just wanted a chance to ask you some questions about (Y/N)-ah.”
“Oh,” Jungkook leaned against the door, “I will answer everything honestly. You guys are her big brothers and I want you guys to trust me with her.”
“She told you about my feelings for her?” Hyuk sat down on his bed and looked at Jungkook seriously, “How does that make you feel?”
Jungkook sighed, “I respect you Sunbae, I really do. And I can’t stop you from having feelings for her, that’s all on your own,” he peeked his head around the room and saw a polaroid of you and Hyuk on Hyuk’s nightstand, “And I trust (Y/N)-ah that her feelings are strong for me. I trust both of you to respect all of our feelings towards everything...if that makes sense?”
“I get what you’re saying,” Hyuk noticed you looking at the photo, “That was our Christmas movie marathon last year. I realized then that I liked her more than just my best friend.”
“You liked her before I did,” Jungkook looked down, “Sunbae I’m sorry if I hurt you.”
“It’s okay Jungkook-ah, it really is, what matters to me is her happiness, doesn’t that matter to you too?”
“Of course it does,” Jungkook smiled at the thought of you smiling, “Her smile literally lightens up everything.”
“And you’ll take care of her? Love her? Care for her? Protect her?” Hyuk looked up at Jungkook, “I could only do so much, but you’re her boyfriend so you have more of an impact than I do now.”
“Sunbae, I have no intention of stealing her away from you. You’re her best friend and that’s a spot that’s made just for you only,” Jungkook was wise knowing his place, “You guys have been through much more than her and I have been through so far. You’re her best friend and I’m her boyfriend, but regardless we’ll both be loving, caring and protecting her no matter what. And I hope to be doing that for the rest of my life.”
“You two are some of the biggest stars right now, are you prepared to deal with paparazzi? Word will get out that you two are dating eventually or our labels will say go public with it,” Hyuk sighed, “She gets overwhelmed easily, so can you be there to make it easier for her?”
“Of course Sunbae, I don’t want anything to be hard for her, so I will do my best in everything.”
“I think it’s best that you guys let everyone know before the end of the night that you guys are dating,” Hyuk walked up to Jungkook and put his hand on his shoulder, “But just take care of her okay? I care so much about her and don’t want to see her get hurt. Especially by you.”
“I promise Sunbae.”
“Call me hyung.” And with that, Hyuk left the room.
Jungkook followed and saw you laughing, he smiled at the sight of you with N. He felt relieved knowing you were surrounded by people who genuinely cared for you and protected you when he wouldn’t be able to.
“Hyuk-ah!” Ravi called out, “We were just wondering, what were you showing Jungkook-ssi, you don’t have an Overwatch set up? Did you confess your love for the golden maknae or something?”
“I-...nevermind.” Hyuk pouted.
Jungkook noticed there was an empty spot next to you so he decided to sit next to you. He smiled at you warmly and couldn’t take his eyes off of you.
“Yah! Yah!” Yoongi shouted, “Look at the way Jungkookie is staring at (Y/N)-ah!”
“Look at how (Y/N)-ah is blushing!” Ken pointed out too.
Your eyes widened hearing both of your members point out all of that. Jungkook scratched the back of his head and chuckled embarrassingly. This was all coming at you too fast again you started panicking. But you relaxed because Jungkook placed his hand on top of yours and held it tightly to reassure you that he’s there.
“Is there something you want to tell us Princess?” You heard N’s voice in the background, you couldn't hide things from your Hakyeon mommy, it wasn’t right.
“Yeah Jungkook-ah! Something you want to tell us?” Hoseok wiggled his eyebrows at the two of you.
Jungkook sighed, “(Y/N)-ah and I have been dating...for the last 6 months.” He held the two of your hands that were intertwined up together.
“Why didn’t you tell us Princess?” Rather than N sounding mad, he was more curious. You expected mad or sad, not curious.
“I…” you sighed, “I was just scared that you guys wouldn’t have approved. Every male that has come my way expressing their feelings for me, you guys always stood up for me because I didn’t feel the same way. But bunny oppa was different. I actually had feelings for bunny oppa but I just didn’t want you guys to disapprove of him.”
“How you didn’t tell us Jungkook-ah?” Namjoon asked his maknae.
“I would tell you when (Y/N)-ah was ready to tell her members. I trust you hyungs 100% but I just didn’t want to risk anything getting exposed without her knowing. I didn’t want her to get overwhelmed.” Jungkook gripped your hand tightly under the table.
“We’re sorry we kept this hidden from you guys,” you bowed your head down, “We really are.” You expected members to start getting mad, but instead you got complete silence.
“Well Jungkookie beat me to it,” you heard Taehyung break the silence, “I was gonna try to go for you (Y/N)-ah.”
“Wait,” Jimin’s head popped up, “S-so was I! She’s a literal princess!”
“She’s so adorable! I was going to try!” Jin shot up too causing Ken to shoot up.
“Yah you idiot!” Ken playfully smacked him, “That’s my little sister!”
“Not biologically…”Jin chuckled.
“None of you guys are mad?” You looked up shocked.
“I mean, we wish you guys told us, but there’s nothing we can do from stopping it.” N chuckled.
“I kind of sensed that JK had a girl.” Yoongi laughed.
“B-but, Hakyeon mommy I heard you talking with Namjoon Oppa about how you wanted me to be with Hyukie Oppa!” You looked at the two of them then at Hyuk, “You’re okay right Hyukie Oppa?”
“I am,” he smiled at you warmly, “I talked to Jungkook, and as long as he takes good care of you and makes you happy and treats you like the Princess you are, that’s all that matters for me.”
“Not a princess hyung,” Jungkook smiled at you, “I’ll treat her like the queen she is.”
“Jungkook-ah,” N’s voice turned serious, “When the public knows of you two dating, it will get harder, but will you protect her to the best you can? We all want nothing but happiness for you two, and especially our Princess.”
“I will do my best Sunbae. I promise. I love (Y/N)-ah way too much that I would hate to see anything hurt her.” Jungkook was rubbing your knuckles with his thumb, your hands have still not separated from each other.
“Then that’s what we want to hear,” Leo chimed in, he may be stoic but he cares for you greatly, “If you hurt her we will find you.”
“We will find you too!” Jimn chimed in glaring at Jungkook, “And we’ll swoop in!”
Jungkook wrapped his arms around you tightly, “I don’t know if this is a test...but she’s my girl! I will protect her as best as I can!”
You bursted out laughing, “Bunny you’re suffocating me.”
“Oh one rule though,” Namjoon and N both chimed in, “No making out in front of any of us members!”
Your face heated up while Jungkook laughed, “Then don’t come in my room whenever sh-” You smacked Jungkook to make him shut up.
“We’ll follow the rules!” You giggled. That wasn’t nearly as bad as you had anticipated it to be, but you were sure glad your members approved of you and Jungkook. Now you guys wouldn’t have to go around hiding anymore.
“I love you piggy.” Jungkook whispered in your ear as members of both groups were fooling around again.
You looked at him and smiled, “I love you too bunny.”
Stick and Pokes
pairing: Han Jisung x Y/N (female reader)
90′s!au, sk8r boy Jisung!au, high school!au
genre: angst and fluff
warnings: cursing, self-medicating (with weed),  and needles.
Tumblr media
You were just about to crawl into bed as your window slid open. You gasped seeing your boyfriend Jisung smiling at you while crawling through your window. His backpack and skateboard made him anything but graceful. You sighed in relief, “Ji! What the fuck? You nearly gave me a heart attack!” “Sorry, babygirl. I just wanted to see you,” he whispered. He stood still by the window, waiting for premission to get into bed.
He looked perfect without even trying, standing there in his flannel pajama pants and black hoodie. His curly hair only emphazied the effortlessness of his appearence. He coughed, interupting your thoughts. You moved over and patted the area of the bed next to you. He jumped onto the bed and slid under the covers. You laid your head on his chest and wrapped your arms around him. He kissed you on your forehead and you slowly drifted to sleep.
“Y/N! You’re going to be late for school!” your mom yelled, waking you. Fuck, you thought, Jisung. You heard your mom’s footsteps marching up the stairs to your room, “Seriously, Y/N! Get up!” Before she can open the door you pushed a sleeping Jisung off the bed and out of sight. The door busted open. “I’m up,” you say. She groans, “You have 10 minutes before the bus gets here.” “I know, mom,” you yell as she closed the door behind her. Jisung sat up and rubed his face, “Good morning, beautiful.” His dimpley smile made it so hard to yell at him. “Jisung! You have to go,” you commanded, getting out of bed. He giggled, “Or I could take the bus with you.” “Fine, but you have to meet me at the bus stop,” you comply. He kisses your cheek and sneaked back out of the window.
You got ready, ran out of your room and down the stairs. Your mom was waiting for you in the kitchen, “Don’t forget breakfast.” You groaned an grabbed a banana on your way out. As you approached the bus stop you saw Jisung standing with one foot out of the bus talking to diver, doing his best to stall him. He was so cute while standing there nervously waiting for you. You started to sprint, grabbing his arm as soon as you reached the entrance of the bus. He jumped in surprise. “Hi,” you greeted the bus driver who rolled his eyes and shut the door behind you. You and Jisung sat next to each other on the bus, listening to music on his walkman.
You sat in math, a feeling of emptiness was burning a hole in your chest. You just wanted to feel something. The only thing that made you feel was Jisung. He ignited something in you that you couldn’t describe. When you two were together it felt as if time stopped and all of the responsibilities of your everyday life disapeared. You needed him in that moment more than ever. As of late school and your home life left you feeling isolated and empty. Thank fuck, you thought as the bell rang throughout the school. You start packing up and run out of the room. In your haste you bump into Jisung in the hallway.
“Woah, hey,” Jisung said, grabbing your waist, “Are you okay?” You nod, “I’m just really ready to go home.” “Speaking of, do you want to stay at my place over the weekend? My parents are out of town, so we’ll have the place to ourselves,” Jisung sounded almost uncertain of what your answer would be. Giggling, you replied, “Yeah, of course. Just as long as we can stay at home and smoke all weekend.” “What else would we do,” Jisung laughed. He put his arm around you and walked you to your locker. You took out the books you needed and put the in your backpack, “Okay. Let’s go.” Jisung nodded and we started to walk.
Jisung lived close to school so you guys could walk. During the walk to Jisung’s He put his skateboard on the ground and pulled you onto it. Each time you wobbled Jisung would laugh and proceed to reasure you that it was okay and you wouldn’t fall. He held your hands and pulled you on the skateboard until you got to his driveway. He helped you off his board and then kicked it up. You walked through his garage. He picked you up and carried you bridal style and carried you into his room. You were giggling as laid you down on his bed and kissed your stomach.
He looked up at you, “Want to smoke?” “More than ever,” you sighed, throwing you head back against the bed. Jisung started rummaging through his desk door. He pulled out a plastic bag and pulled out one of the blunts. You sat up and he put it to your lips. After digging through his pocket and fishing out his lighter, he lit your blunt. You breathed in immediatly, eager and ready to feel the release that would soon follow your first inhale. Jisung lit a blunt for himself and sat on the bed by the pillows above you. “Ji,” you asked. He hummed before blowing out smoke. You continued, “Can you tattoo me?” He laughed, “Sure. Let me just get some stuff.” He jumped up and ran out the room.
Laying on there on Jisung’s bed with your eyes closed made time go by so slowly. Either that or you were just high as fuck. After a couple more puffs you felt your body get lighter. The feeling of you floating started to hit causing you to giggle. Either that or you were just high as fuck. Jisung came back into the room. “Babe. I got everything. What do you want,” Jisung asked holding up supplies, the high not yet hitting him. You laughed, “Just do what you want.” You  held out your arm for him to work on. He took his lighter and sterilized the needle. Jisung then spun a thread around the needle and dipped it in some ink.
The needled entered your skin. You giggled and your legs squirmed, “It tickles!” Jisung laughed at your reaction, “It’s supposed to hurt, and stop moving.” You looked at your arm. Blood started peeking out from your skin. He took your arm to his mouth and licked off the blood. His eyes then met yours, “No peeking!” Before you could turn away Jisung stretched over and kissed you. You could taste the metalic taste mixed with the weed as soon as he deepend the kiss, slightly opening is mouth. He pulled away leaving a sour after-taste against your lips.
“Ji,” you whispered, “I love you.” He laid his hand on your cheeck, “Y/N, I love you, too.” You laughed, “Okay now get back to work,” you shook your arm, “and stop making my heart feel all melted and shit.” He chuckled and nodded, crouching down to keep stabbing the needle in your arm. It did not take him as long to finish than you expected. Once he release your arm with an overexaggerated, “Ta-da!” you looked at your tattoo to see a deformed, black smiley face covered in blood. “I love it,” you told him. Which was true, despite how ugly it actually was. You thought it added to the charm.
After letting you take a peek at your newly inked skin Jisung took back your arm and wiped it off. “Sorry that it’s kind of wonky,” he pouted. You were wuick to reassure him, “No no no! I love it! He needs a name though.” “Gerald is a cool name,” JIsung laughed and soon after started coughing. He took another drag from his blunt. “You think that’s going to help you stop coughing,” you questioned. “No, but what else is there to do?” You huffed and threw your back down on the bed with all your force.
Time stopped as you closed your eyes. Your thoughts started to engulf you, What’s the point of doing anything? Fuck. I don’t want to be here. “I don’t want to be here,” you said outloud without thinking. “Do you want to go home,” Jisung asked, eyes looking as though he already missed you. “No, I just... I don’t know,” a tear rolled down your cheek. “Y/N, what’s up. Come on. You can tell me anything, you know that, right?” he grabbed your hand, to which you pulled away almost immediatly. “I don’t want to be anywhere,” you babbled. Crying for four days straight was now only a voice crack away.
Your boyfriend sat next to you and put his hand on your outter thigh, “Y/N, do you mean,” his voice trailed off. All you could do is nod. “Baby,” he winced at the thought of you in pain. Jisung quickly wrapped his body around yours, pulling you close to his chest. He whispered as he tucked your hair behind your ear, “What can I do to make you feel better?” You could not hold back anymore, “Nothing.” You started to sob. You tried your best to calm down, but you could not. Even though Jisung was right there next to you, you still felt nothing but hurt.
All Jisung could do was hold you. He would occasionally inject saying that everything would be okay. What else could he do? You did not expect anything from him. What he did was so kind. You really wanted for his comfort to make you feel better, but it did not. He cooded in your ear, “I love you.” You told him you loved him too and how much you apperciated him inbetween sobs. “Do you need anything? Maybe some water?” he asked after kissing your salty cheek.
You nodded and Jisung let go of you, leaving you feeling cold. When Jisung came back you sat up and wiped your tears, “I’m sorry. Thanks.” You took the glass and sipped the liquid to stop your cries. “Don’t be sorry, Y/N. I love you so much, all I want to do is to be here for you,” his eyebrows furrowed, “I just want you to be okay.”
Fireworks
A/N: So I wrote this fic about a year ago for the lovely @nyxwordsmith for their birthday. This was based on a dream they had and so I made it a thing.
Summary: Roman and Patton are back together for the summer but something gets in the way, so when they do get time together after a schedule change they take advantage of it.
Warnings: Minor anxiety, Showering scene (is safe for work but a little odd), crying, kissing, non-sexual nudity, swearing
Pairing: Royality
Part of Two Hearts Beat as One AU: Part 1
Finally, summer break was upon them, which meant Roman and Patton would be together without interruption. They had both decided to opt out of summer classes, their normal semesters were stressful enough. Summer was a much-needed break from the school work and never-ending hours of other obligations.
The summer thus far had been relatively slow which neither of them minded. Roman had taken up a part-time job at an ice cream shop, while Patton had decided to work at the hospital as an externship.
Roman and Patton had tried to keep their schedule as similar to each other as possible but sometimes it didn’t work out. The past two weeks were a very good representation of the best-laid plans often going awry. Patton had been given the overnight shifts because the usual intern that worked was on vacation and he was incapable of saying no.
Telling Roman that he had taken the overnight shifts for a couple of weeks had gone better than he thought but it still was one of his least favorite conversations.
~Flashback~
Patton had planned on meeting Roman after they both got off work, actually, he planned on picking his boyfriend up from the ice cream shop, Sweet Divine. He pulled up to the curb and smiled as he saw Roman.
Roman got into the car and immediately noticed that Patton was more fidgety than usual, “Baby, what’s the matter.”
Patton sighed and laughed a little, “Sometimes I wish you weren’t as observant as you are.” He took a breath, “I--um...don’t be mad.”
Roman’s breathing increased and his hands got sweaty, it was rare for him to see Patton looking so nervous and scared to say something, which meant it must be important, “Pat...100% honesty remember?”
Patton turned the key and shut off the engine of the car, then shifted to face Roman, “The intern who usually works nights...well they are on vacation. Soitooktheshift…’m sorry.
“Baby...you had me worried. I know we wanted to keep our schedules as similar as possible but this isn’t the end of the world. What times do you work now?”  Roman let out the breath he was holding.
Patton looked away, “11 at night to 11 in the morning….”
Roman sighed, “Okay yeah that fucking sucks considering I work 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.”
“I ruined it….”  Patton said as he scrubbed at his eyes now realizing that tears were falling.
Roman gently reached out his hand to Patton’s, “I’m not angry, baby. It is frustrating but you want to help always and I know that. Someone said they needed help and in a very you fashion became their knight in shining armor, just like you are mine.”
Patton giggled, “Ro….that was sappy!!!” His voice whiny and giggly.
Roman laughed, “Of course it was sappy. I am your soulmate. It would take a lot more for me to be angry than for my plans to be a little skewed.”
Patton smiled and leaned over the armrest to kiss Roman quickly before driving back to the apartment.
It had been a long shift and all Patton wanted now was to go home and sleep. At this point, he wasn’t even sure what day of the week it was.  Just that he needed to get back to the apartment. It was at this moment he was very thankful for living in an apartment rather than in the dorms still.
Patton had wanted the college experience for his first year but once that was over he was more than ready to live off campus and not share a room with someone. He and his roommate, Logan, had gotten along enough that they decided to share a two-bedroom apartment off campus after freshman year ended. Which worked out great because when Roman came back from Julliard he could live with them, Patton had checked with Logan to make sure it was okay first.
He pulled into his parking spot noticing that Roman’s motorcycle was still home, but didn’t think much of it. Sometimes Roman walked to work or caught a ride with someone else and Patton was aware that his boyfriend was never home when he got home so that didn’t even cross his mind. The only things on his mind currently were getting out of his scrubs, a hot shower, and his bed. Oh and his day off tomorrow since the overnight intern, Remy, would be back.
He put the car in park and got out heading toward the complex and up to the apartment. It was a battle to keep his eyes open but Patton felt gross and was in dire need of a shower. He opened the door to his apartment and headed straight for the bathroom.
Roman was watching TV on the couch when he saw Patton walk in the door, his boyfriend looked tired beyond words. He followed Patton and entered the bathroom after the shower had started. He sat himself on the lid of the toilet, “Hey baby.”
 “Roman what the hell! I could’ve died,” Patton screamed and pulled the curtain back slightly.
Roman rolled his eyes, “And you say I’m dramatic….I missed you.”
Patton stuck his tongue out at his boyfriend,  “I missed you too, but why are you home?”
Roman looked confused, “You have no idea what day it is, do you?”
Patton blushed, “I think it is June 30?”
“Baby...you didn’t even get the month right, it is July 4th,” Roman shook his head and laughed.
Patton’s eyes went wide, “Oh! That’s why you’re home! The shop is closed for the holiday!” He moved back under the water to get the shampoo out since he had been distracted by his boyfriend’s existence, “Oh, Ro?”
Roman just laughed as it set in just how exhausted his boyfriend was,  “Yes, my love?”
Patton was now spreading the soap over his body, trying to finish his shower quickly. His boyfriend being home giving him new energy, “I have my old shift back. Remy is back starting tonight.”
Roman squealed and jumped in the shower wanting to hug his boyfriend and completely forgetting he had clothes on and that he would get soaked, “That means you get to enjoy the holiday and we get to hang out again!”
Patton squeaked as he felt Roman’s arms wrap around him, “Roman!!! You are dressed!!! I am in the shower!!! What is happening!”
Roman laughed and blushed hard, “I got excited okay! I missed you. Going to sleep without you these past two weeks have sucked, it was like being back at school and I am not ready for that yet.” He moved towards the back of the shower letting Patton go begrudgingly.
Patton smiled as he finished washing off, then turned the water off, leaning to kiss Roman, “I love you and you’re so adorable.” There was no point in trying to keep Roman from getting wet considering he was already drenched. He wrapped his arms around Roman’s neck pulling him in close for a slow kiss.
Roman immediately melted against his boyfriend, pulling him close and wrapping his arms around Patton’s wet waist. He sighed happily against Patton’s lips, leaning against the back wall of the shower.
Patton pulled away with a smirk, “I need to dry off and you need to either undress and shower or get changed. I will put you in the dryer!”
Roman made a noise of offense, “Patton you would not dare put me in there...again!”
Patton smiled and kissed Roman softly, “I did not put you in it last time! You decided to see if you could fit and I closed the door.”
Roman playfully batted at Patton’s arm, “You’re awful. Why do I put up with you?”
Patton laughed, “Because you’re mad--ly in love with me.”
Roman groaned and smacked him lightly, “That was awful. Get out of here!”
“Did you literally tell me to get out of the shower? Excuse you! I was in here first and actually showering,” Patton said with a smile and shaking his head.
Roman laughed, “Okay fine. Counterproposal, we both get out and get dressed.”
Patton laughed and interlaced his fingers with Roman’s “Okay fine but you are coming with me. I missed you, Ro.”
They both got out of the shower. Patton grabbing his towel as Roman peeled his wet clothes off and grabbed another towel. Then the pair headed to the bedroom to change into some dry clothes.
Once dressed Patton flopped on the bed, his second burst of energy having passed. His eyes fluttering closed until he felt the bed dip and saw Roman.
Roman smiled at his tired boyfriend, “I think a nap is in order, baby.”
Patton whined and curled in on himself, “‘m not tired.”
Roman laughed and shook his head, “Uh-huh. If you’re not tired then I’m the queen of England.”
Patton laughed a little, “I don’t wanna sleep, Ro.”
Roman moved Patton so that he was on his side of the bed and his legs weren’t hanging off the edge. He wrapped his arms around Patton’s waist as he laid back with his boyfriend on his chest.
After a couple minutes and some more whining from Patton, Roman gave up and decided to use his ‘off switch’, “I’m sorry, baby, but you are tired. I’ll wake you up later.” He slowly moved one hand so it threaded through Patton’s hair. After repeating this action four or five times, Patton was asleep. Roman felt himself drifting off soon after, completely content to spend the entire day with Patton asleep in his arms.
Patton woke up first. He opened his eyes and released a content sigh against Roman’s chest. Letting himself adjust to the room, he rolled over and looked out the window, it was dark. How long had they been asleep? He moved and grabbed his phone from the bedside table, checking to see the time, it was 8:30 p.m. They had both been asleep for nearly seven hours.
He moved back into Roman’s arms, looking up at his boyfriend and tracing his jawline with sweet innocent kisses. Once Patton came to kiss Roman’s chin, he was met with his boyfriend’s lips instead. Patton hummed happily into the kiss, “You’re awake, babe.”
Roman smiled and tightened his grip around Patton’s waist, “Well you found a great way to wake me up, dearheart.”
“Babe....You know that one makes me all flustered,” Patton managed to squeak out, hiding his face against Roman’s neck.
Roman laughed, “Exactly why I used it. I love you, Patton.”
Patton removed his head from Roman’s neck and looked down at him, “I love you too, re mio.”
“We should get up, watch the fireworks,” Roman suggested as he tried to fight off the blush spreading across his face.
Patton frowned, “Ro, neither of us even like fireworks. They are too loud.”
Roman sighed, “Ah yes, but they are so pretty.” He moved Patton a little and sat up some more, “We could probably see the ones downtown from your balcony.”
Patton smiled, “Then it wouldn’t be so loud. They are going to start soon though babe, let’s get up.”
After much moaning and groaning from both of the boys, they got up and moved towards the balcony, deciding that dinner could wait until after. Neither of them really big fans of eating immediately after waking up.
Patton opened the glass door and allowed Roman to step out first. They leaned against the railing shoulder to shoulder for a few moments taking in the warm and humid night air.
Roman wrapped an arm around Patton’s waist knowing that the fireworks would be starting soon and that the contact would help keep both of them grounded.
The fireworks started soon after they walked out onto the balcony. The dark night sky painted with so many different colors: red, blue, purple, and white amongst others. The designs ranging from simple spirals to intricate flower shapes.
Patton tried focusing on the fireworks but each time his mind would wander to the beautiful man standing next to him. He found himself staring at Roman more than the fireworks, not that he truly minded.
“You’re missing the show, baby,” Roman said teasingly when he felt Patton’s eyes on him.
Patton blushed at having been caught but quickly recovered, “You are my show, Roman.”
Roman tore his eyes away from the display and looked at Patton, “W--what?”
Patton smiled, flustering his boyfriend didn’t happen often but when it did it was so cute, “The fireworks are beautiful and I know that I don’t see them often but Roman… You’re so much more interesting. The way your eyes light up when you see one that is particularly pretty or the face you pull when they should’ve built up the dramatic effect for the larger displays.”
Roman blushed, “You’ve been watching me this entire time?”
Patton leaned in and kissed Roman’s nose, “Of course I have. My boyfriend is far more interesting than some fireworks display. Roman, you are the most fascinating thing I’ve ever seen. You know how I can never get anything done when we video chat?”
Roman nodded prompting Patton to continue, “I get so lost in all the faces you make when you are working on things. Or when you try new dance moves your eyes light up when you get them correct or if you mess up you get this look of determination that says you’ll repeat this until you get it right.”
Roman wiped at the tears on his face, “I didn’t know that you were that observant.”
“I am always watching you because you are so interesting. You are similar to me but not, in so many ways. I want to be able to remember everything you do for when we have to go back to school, back to long distance. While I know we have our entire lives ahead of us to be together, I like to take advantage of the time we spend together whether in person or video chat,” Patton said as he smiled looking into Roman’s eyes like he was the only person on Earth.
Roman was full on sobbing, “You are not allowed to be this sappy, Pat!”
Patton took Roman into his arms, “You do this to me all the time! With surprise gifts and displays of affection! Let me have this!”
“Fine. You can have this but only if you kiss me,” Roman retorted the words coming out mixed with laughter. Then he moved his face away from his boyfriend’s chest slightly, looking up at the other man.
Patton laughed and smiled, “Deal.” With that Patton placed his hand under Roman’s chin bringing his lips to meet his own in a slow drawn out kiss. The fireworks around them having been long forgotten. At this moment the only thing that mattered was each other and how their lips felt against the other.
Fenris/f!Hawke modern AU: Lyrium
Chapter 4 of Damned Spot is up! Read on AO3, or read the previous chapters here on Tumblr: [1] [2] [3]
Also, @schoute is making a gorgeous comic of the fic! See the first two pages on her Tumblr!
In which there are text messages, and also a party WITH FRIENDS. And also some angst. A longer chapter (~7700 words), but what the heck, I’ll post it all.
****************
Piper solicitously wrapped a blanket around Rynne’s shoulders. “So let me get this straight,” she said. “He saves you from a butthurt asshole in the alley. You patch him up. He walks you home. And not even a goodnight kiss?”
She jumped up from the couch and moved toward the kitchen, and Rynne let out a quick laugh. “Trust me, Pipes, it wasn’t… The mood was not right for a kiss.”
It was Monday afternoon, and Piper had gotten home late last night from her weekend getaway. Rynne had just finished an abridged telling of the Friday night debacle - leaving out all the information about Fenris’s past, of course.
Rynne wasn’t being entirely truthful when she said the mood hadn’t been right for a kiss. During the whole walk home, she’d been forced to suppress the urge to take shelter in the steady strength of Fenris’s arms. She was a big fan of physical comfort, hugs and hand-holding and the like, and Fenris’s timely rescue - combined with the fact that she was already infatuated with him - made her want to cling to him like a baby lemur.
But she was trying to respect his aversion to touch. Besides, the walk home had been… oddly intense. Fenris had seemed deep in thought, and Rynne had nervously blathered about all kinds of stupid things to make up for his silence, and by the time they reached the door of Isabela’s condo building, it had almost been a relief when he’d dropped her off with nothing more than a polite nod of the head and a wish for a good night.
Rynne knew she should probably be more freaked out about Fenris’s past. Being an enforcer for the Tevinter mob was not a minor revelation. But for some reason, she just couldn’t bring herself to be scared of him. Maybe she was in denial, or maybe she’d seen so many action movies that she was desensitized to the idea, but she just… didn’t mind.
Fenris’s past didn’t change anything. He was still the same quiet, broody, private, smooth-voiced, handsome and helpful elf he’d always been. The only difference was that Rynne now knew why he was so quiet and broody and private.
How basic was it that the reveal of his dark past just made her want to kiss him all the more?
Piper grunted and poured a cup of hot tea. “What about Saturday and Sunday night, then? He walked you home all weekend and no kiss?”
Rynne slumped on the couch as Piper flitted back to her side and placed the tea on the coffee table. “No, okay? No kiss. He’s probably not interested. He probably thinks I’m just some dumb girl who needs to be looked after.” She couldn’t help but kind of feel that way herself. What the hell was the point of self-defence training if it just melted out of her brain the second she was attacked? She’d tried to headbutt the guy in the face, but that had failed, and if Fenris hadn’t shown up -
She shivered and wrapped her arms around her knees. She could still remember the disgusting feeling of that asshole’s bulging crotch pressing against her back as he shoved her against the wall.
Fucking horrible, she thought. She reached out and grabbed the mug of tea on the coffee table, then took a gulp and scalded her tongue.
Piper watched her worriedly, then carefully tucked the blanket around her neck and her feet. “Should’ve let Fenris cut that guy’s dick off. That would have served him right.”
“Yeah,” Rynne sighed. “But we would have been there all night. His dick was probably microscopic and impossible to find.”
Piper snorted. “Probably. But once Fenris cut it off, we could stick it into the garnish tray with the cornichons. It would be right at home.”
Rynne grinned at the gross image, and they both burst into raucous laughter. Then Piper wrapped her arms around Rynne’s neck in a tight hug. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there,” she said. “If I’d been there to watch out for you -”
Rynne hugged her back. “Oh balls, don’t be fucking stupid,” she said. “You were off having a sexy holiday! How was your weekend, by the way? You didn’t tell me. How’s Ostwick at this time of year?”
Piper pulled away and shrugged. “I wouldn’t know.”
Her tone of voice was exceedingly innocent. Rynne hid her smirk and played along. “Oh? What do you mean?” she asked.
Piper coyly tugged her silvery braid over one shoulder. “We spent the whole weekend in the hotel room. Except for meals. That is, when I wasn’t devouring Cullen’s-”
Rynne snickered and shoved Piper away. “Thank you, too much information. I don’t want to hear all the details of my best friend feasting on my lawyer’s cock, thanks very much.”
Piper cackled and shoved her in return. “Hey, you said it, not me. You’re the nasty one.”
“Ooh, who’s nasty? Do tell.” Isabela floated into the living room wearing nothing but a silken dressing gown and a grin. She flopped down on the couch beside Rynne, and one half of her gown fell open to reveal a pierced nipple.
As always, Piper and Rynne ignored her nudity. “Piper spent the whole weekend sucking Cullen’s cock,” Rynne reported.
“And Rynne spent the whole weekend wishing she was sucking Fenris’s cock,” Piper retaliated.
Rynne gasped in mock offense. “How dare you get so far into my brain? You pervert.”
Isabela straightened up. “That’s it. I need to meet this Fenris.” She pulled her phone out of her dressing gown pocket and tapped the screen, then held the phone to her ear.
Rynne raised an eyebrow. “Who are you calling?”
Isabela blew her a kiss, then rose gracefully from the couch. “Josie? It’s me. I’m throwing a party this Saturday. Let’s say… seventy-five people. A smaller little thing, yes. Can you-” She paused and listened, then threw her head back and laughed. “Thanks, sweets. You know me too well.” She listened for a moment longer, then grinned and ended the call.
She shifted her weight to one hip and planted a hand on her waist. “Bring your handsome bouncer, Hawke. I won’t take no for an answer.”
A flutter of anticipation lit Rynne’s belly, and she and Piper grinned at each other. Then another cheerful voice joined the conversation. “Oh, are we having a party? How nice! Can I make a cake?”
Rynne grinned as Merrill flitted through the kitchen into the living room. “Is it going to be a cake like last time? Because if so, then that’s a hard no.”
Merrill waved her hands. “No, no, that was just a mistake! Silly me, putting in a tablespoon of salt instead of a teaspoon-”
Isabela draped her arm around Merrill’s slender shoulders. “Of course you can make a cake, kitten. I’ll eat the first piece myself.”
Merrill happily clapped her hands. “Oh good! Mihris sent me a pin with a new recipe and I’ve been hoping for a good reason to try it. It’s kind of an odd one, mind you, it’s got dragonthorn in it, but most of the reviews say the aftertaste is supposed to be lovely…”
Piper, Merrill, and Isabela continued to chat about cakes and cocks and who to invite to the party, and Rynne pulled out her phone and flicked through to her contacts. Finally, at long last, she had a good reason to text him.
She bit her lip as she looked at Fenris’s number. Then, with a happy little flutter of nerves, she tapped his name and started a new message thread.
1:27pm  - hey! party at Isabela’s place this Saturday! 1:27pm  - you can come anytime after 8pm but the earlier the better 1:27pm - dont be fashionably late. i like punctuality in a man 1:28pm - i’ll dance with you if you’re very good ;)
She sent the messages rapid-fire, then listened to her friends’ conversation with half an ear while she waited.
She waited and tapped her toes impatiently for a minute or so, then rose to her feet and went to the kitchen to refresh her tea. Fenris’s phone was so archaic that Rynne probably wouldn’t get the little animated-ellipsis-thingy showing that he was typing, so she would just have to suffer the wait.
While the kettle was boiling, she heard the ding of a new text in her pocket. She hurriedly pulled out her phone.
1:35pm - Who is this 1:35pm - How did you get this number
She laughed. She could almost hear his suspicion through the letters on her screen. She started to type a response, but his next message appeared before she could finish.
1:36pm - Hawke?
She grinned giddily, feeling somehow flattered that he knew it was her. She quickly finished her replies.
1:36pm - 10 points to the broody elf! yes, it’s Hawke 1:36pm - keep your schedule clear for saturday night! 1:36pm - Isabela relaly wants to meet you 1:36pm - really**
She placed the phone on the counter and stared unseeingly at the kettle while she waited. Once the kettle had boiled, she poured her tea over the teabag in her mug and picked up her phone, despite not having heard the text tone.
Indeed, no new replies from Fenris. Rynne nibbled the inside of her cheek, then flicked around on Pinterest and saved a few fanart posts, but she was having trouble pretending to be interested in anything except the burning silence of her messaging app.
She eventually returned to the living room and forced herself to join in with the others’ conversation. An eon later, when her phone dinged again, she shamelessly whipped it out and looked at the screen.
1:52pm - It is not a good idea.
She frowned. She understood that he wanted to keep his head down, but he would just be one more face in the crowd at this party.
She swiftly tapped out her replies.
1:52pm - please come 1:52pm - i promise my friends are not as bad as me 1:52pm - well that might be a lie 1:53pm - but i promise youll have a good time 1:53pm - if you hate it, you can leave. i’ll pack you a doggie bag of snacks and everything
Did she sound desperate? Probably. Did she care? Apparently not. She really was willing to make an idiot of herself for him, it seemed.
“So?” Isabela asked. “What’s he saying?”
Rynne didn’t bother to ask how Isabela knew who she was texting. She gave Isabela a rueful smile. “It’s touch and go. He’s not really a ‘people person’.”
Isabela shrugged, and her silken gown slipped off of one shoulder. “Tell him we’ll all show him our tits if he comes.”
Merrill gasped and folded her arms across her chest, and Piper cackled. “Only if we all want Cullen’s face to burst into flame.”
Isabela laughed and Rynne grinned wickedly, but before she could reply, her phone dinged once more.
1:55pm - I will think about it.
Rynne breathed a small sigh of relief. An opening was all she needed.
1:55pm - yay! i’ll make sure Bels stocks up on the best red wine just for you
She had the entire week to bring him around. Surely she could convince him to come in the space of a week.
***********************
Fenris shouldn’t have come.
He stood stock-still outside of the entrance to Isabela’s condo. It was a mistake to come here. Parties involved being introduced to people, and having them stare at him and wanting to shake hands, and remembering his face and his name in order to tell other people about him later.
All of it boded poorly. Fenris was trying to stay incognito. He didn’t want to be looked at. He didn’t want to be remembered, so coming here was a mistake. The entire time he was walking here from Lowtown, he’d told himself that coming to this party was a mistake, and yet here he was.
He scowled at the big glass double doors for a long minute while he considered turning around and going home. Then his phone vibrated in his pocket.
He flipped it open to find a new message from Hawke.
9:42pm - i hope your on your way! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) 9:42pm - you’re*** 9:43pm - for the first you’re i mean 9:43pm - fuck it you understand what i mena 9:43pm - fuck’s sake
Despite his buzzing discomfort, he couldn’t help but smile. Her texts were just like her: over the top, overly flirtatious, and impossible to ignore. And also oddly charming.
He traced his thumb across the texts, then flipped his phone shut. He pushed open the heavy glass doors and buzzed the intercom for Isabela’s condo.
A loud voice and an indistinct buzz of noise greeted him. “Welcome to the animal house. Who dares to enter this den of debauchery?”
Fenris frowned apprehensively. The voice on the line sultry and smooth, and definitely not Hawke’s. “Is Hawke there?” he asked.
The sultry voice chuckled. “I don’t know your voice, but I bet I know who you are. Come on in, handsome.” She disconnected the call, and Fenris heard the click of the inner doors unlocking.
He cast the intercom a suspicious look, then slunk through the lobby toward the elevators and hit the PH button. He held himself perfectly still as the elevator slid smoothly up to the penthouse floor, then stepped out of the elevator into a short corridor.
He immediately heard the faint thump of bass and the noise of conversation. He swallowed hard, then cautiously approached the door at the end of the hall and rang the doorbell. Moments later, a beautiful woman in a scandalously short white dress answered the door.
She grinned at him and slid a salacious look across his body. “Wow. You must be Fenris.”
He raised one eyebrow and hid his hands in his pockets. “And you must be Isabela.”
She laughed and raised her mostly-empty crystal tumbler. “Guilty as charged. Come on in and make yourself comfortable.”
Fenris followed her into the apartment and immediately began assessing the situation. The condo was less crowded than he’d anticipated, but that was likely more because of how enormous it was rather than the number of people per se. Two storeys, two generous sitting areas, and an enormous open-plan kitchen were the first features he absorbed, as well as the exceedingly tasteful white-and chrome decor… or at least it would be exceedingly tasteful, but it was broken up by a multitude of personal touches - knick-knacks, cushions and blankets, and wall art and plants that were variably colourful, chaotic, and cozy, and all of which clearly indicated the tastes of a number of different residents.
“I’ll get you a drink,” Isabela said. “Red wine, right?”
Fenris turned his attention to her and narrowed his eyes. “What else have Piper and Hawke told you?” he drawled.
Isabela smirked. “Honestly? Nothing much. Which is why I was hoping you would come. I hate missing out. What’s the point of being a famous actress if your friends are flirting with handsome boys and having all the fun at home?”
“Hm,” Fenris said as Isabela ushered him further into the house and further into the cheerfully chattering crowd. “Is that why you have roommates? You certainly don’t seem to need them.”
“Exactly,” Isabela purred. “Why else would I own an extravagantly large penthouse if it’s not to fill it with beautiful women and party all the time?”
Fenris huffed in amusement, then followed Isabela into the kitchen. Myriad people were laughing and drinking therein, and as he waited for Isabela to pour his wine, he caught sight of a familiar face - or rather, a familiar silvery fall of hair.
He slowly drifted away from Isabela to join Piper, who was talking animatedly to an attractive blond man. “...and this asshole clips me on my bike. So naturally, I go after him.”
“Maker preserve me, Piper,” the man groaned. Piper chuckled, then glanced over in Fenris’s direction.
She straightened and smiled. “Fenris! You’re finally here! Hawke was - we weren’t sure if you were going to show!”
He tilted his head in a polite nod. “My apologies. I wasn’t sure if I would come, either.”
Piper’s blond companion gave him a half-smile. “Not a fan of parties, I take it?”
Fenris raised an eyebrow. “Not particularly.”
The man folded his arms. “Neither am I. The, um, unwanted attention usually makes such events more annoying than they’re worth.”
“Oh, Cullen. Are you complaining again about being too handsome?” Isabela wafted over and handed Fenris a glass of wine. “It’s such a hard life, isn’t it?”
Cullen shot Isabela a chiding look. “We don’t all make careers off of our looks, Isabela.”
“More’s the pity,” she replied, then winked at him.
Fenris raised his eyebrows in recognition. “So you are Piper’s boyfriend,” he said to Cullen. “She and Hawke have spoken highly of you.”
Piper smacked herself in the forehead. “Right! You haven’t met! I’m so sorry - Fenris, this is Cullen. Cullen, Fenris.”
Cullen smiled and held out his hand to shake. With a small internal sigh - and so the handshaking begins - Fenris briefly grasped Cullen’s proffered hand. “I hear your law practice is very successful. And very busy.”
“Too busy, at times,” Cullen said ruefully. “I haven’t had a chance to take a case like Hawke’s in a very long time.”
Fenris frowned. “...Hawke’s?”
“Oh,” Piper said brightly. “I forgot to tell you. Cullen sometimes takes pro bono cases for us little people who can’t afford a big fancy lawyer. He’s very generous with his time that way.” She looped her hand through Cullen’s elbow and gave him an adoring look.
Isabela made a mock-vomiting noise, and Piper snickered and punched her in the shoulder. Meanwhile, Cullen cleared his throat awkwardly. His cheeks were turning pink. “It is not - she exaggerates, it’s simply my duty to help -”
“Don’t dismiss yourself,” Fenris interjected. “That is a very noble undertaking. It sickens me that the trappings of power and wealth also ensnare the justice system. The world could use more lawyers such as yourself, who care more about righting wrongs than collecting wealth.”
Piper and Isabela stared at him, and Cullen lifted his eyebrows appreciatively. “Well. I… thank you, Fenris, that’s very kind of you to say.”
Fenris nodded and sipped his wine, feeling increasingly awkward. The dance beats and the sounds of conversation and laughter were loud, but the stunned silence from Isabela and Piper somehow felt louder.
He returned his gaze to Cullen. “So. You… you worked with Hawke?”
He nodded. “Yes, with the whole situation with her father and the lyrium. I was happy to help. It wasn’t -”
Fenris’s belly jolted. “Lyrium?” he said sharply.
Cullen frowned slightly. “Yes, in his final days. She… she didn’t tell you?”
Fenris stared at him with growing discomfiture. Then Piper cut in. “Shit. Maybe she didn’t tell him,” she said to Cullen. She grimaced at Fenris. “Sorry, Fenris, she’s an open book about it, I just assumed -”
“Fenris!” Hawke’s bright and cheerful voice cut through the noise. She bounced over and beamed at him. “You’re here, finally! Took you long enough. Did you take the scenic route through the docks to get here? If so, I hope you brought us some seafood. The shrimp cocktail leaves something to be desired.”
Isabela scoffed. “Ungrateful tart. I’ll make sure to let Josephine know.”
“Please do,” Hawke snickered. “I mean, you know I prefer my shrimp breaded and fried, but I’m also a pleb with simple tastes.” She tilted her head at Fenris. “Is the wine okay?”
How are you involved with lyrium? The question burned through his mind. Had she been on the receiving end of it? Had someone forced her to deal it? What had Cullen been talking about?
He tried to push his agitation aside as he scrambled for an appropriate response to her question. “I - yes, it’s fine,” he said.
“Only ‘fine’?” Isabela said indignantly. “That’s a shame. This was supposed to be the best stock from Nevarra.” She plucked the glass from his hand and sipped it, then pouted slightly. “You’re right. It’s not great. Let me get you another.”
“Oh. No, that’s not - that glass is fine-” he started to say, but Isabela had already turned away.
Hawke shrugged and smiled at him. “I’m sure she knew your wine was fine. She just needed an excuse to walk away so we could all stare at her fine ass.”
At her words, Fenris instinctively looked at Isabela’s departing backside. It was admittedly a very fine one.
He returned his gaze to Hawke, and she smiled more broadly. “Made you look,” she teased.
He studied her playful expression. Isabela’s curves were undeniably ripe, but if Fenris was completely honest, he was more interested in the slender physique of the cheeky, pixie-haired woman in front of him.
He stuck his hands into his pockets, wishing that he had a wine glass to hold onto. “Your dress is interesting,” he said to Hawke. Indeed, the fabric of her grey-and-white dress was the oddest print he had ever seen: a chaotic pattern of skulls and pineapples, of all the strange things.
She beamed at him. “Thank you! It is, isn’t it?” She snickered. “Don’t think I didn’t notice your wording, though. ‘Interesting’ is not exactly a compliment.”
“Then I misspoke,” Fenris replied. “I like it very much.” And he did. The pattern was odd, but the cut of the fitted dress was… extremely flattering.
Hawke’s smile softened, and Fenris felt an undeniable - and treacherous - jolt of satisfaction when her cheeks started to flush. “You smooth talker,” she said happily. “Keep up the compliments, and you’re definitely invited to the next party.”
“Hmm. A dubious honour at best,” he replied.
Hawke laughed brightly at his comment. Fenris smirked, then tore his eyes away from her lovely laughing face, incidentally making eye contact with Piper.
Piper, who was watching him with a very satisfied grin.
Fenris dropped his gaze and cleared his throat uncomfortably - why was Isabela taking so long with that wine? - and was very relieved when another familiar face joined their group.
“Well well, the broody elf has come out of his hole,” Varric said. He gave Fenris an appraising look. “Our girls finally managed to drag you out, did they?”
“You could say that,” Fenris said. “They’re very… persistent.” He shot Hawke a quick glance, and she winked at him.
Varric chuckled. “Good. The more the merrier at these things, I say.”
Cullen harrumphed. “I have to say, I’m glad Isabela kept this one small. I haven’t forgotten what happened the last time.” He shot Piper a resentful look.
Piper scoffed and rolled her eyes. “I left you alone for two minutes. It’s not my fault that your resting bitch face is just as cute as your happy face.”
“I - but - they started unbuttoning my shirt!” Cullen protested, and Piper giggled and kissed his cheek.
Fenris looked around at the crowded penthouse. “Wait. This is a small party?” The house wasn’t uncomfortably crowded, but it was getting there. There were so many people that Fenris wasn’t even worrying anymore about being recognized or remembered.
“Oh yeah,” Varric drawled. “You’ve got room to move? Then it’s a small party. This place can get worse than a nightclub on a good night.”
“Why are we even still standing in the kitchen?” Hawke demanded. “We should go upstairs. The upstairs living room is usually less busy.”
Then Isabela reappeared behind Varric. “Sorry for the hold-up,” she said as she handed Fenris his wine. “Now, whose cock size were you gossiping about? Don’t be shy. Fill me in. I mean, I’m fairly sure Varric’s is the biggest, but let’s just say -”
“We were discussing going upstairs,” Cullen interrupted loudly. “A fine idea, I think, if it means fewer people around.”
Isabela rolled her eyes. “I thought Piper brought you along to loosen up, not so your asshole gets even tighter.”
Cullen pursed his lips in annoyance, and Piper laughed and pinched his bum. “Come on, babe, let’s go. Everyone upstairs. Last one there has to dance on the pole for us.”
Fenris frowned. “Pole?”
Hawke blurted a tiny laugh, and Fenris glanced over to find her cheeks turning pink. She shot him an oddly coy look, then jerked her head to the right. “This way,” she said. Then she waved to a couple of other people in the main foyer. “Anders! Merrill! Come join us!”
Feeling increasingly nonplussed, Fenris followed Hawke and her friends up the stairs to yet another seating area that was indeed centered around a pole that spanned from the ceiling to a circular platform on the floor.
His eyebrows jumped high on his forehead. “Why…?”
Hawke sat on the couch and patted the cushion beside her, and Fenris took a seat. “It’s good exercise,” she told him.
“And we look gorgeous doing it,” Isabela added. She leaned her elbows on the back of the couch and gave him a sly grin. “Maybe we’ll let you watch sometime.” She elbowed Hawke, and the two of them laughed dirtily, but Fenris noted that Hawke’s cheeks were still pink.
Isabela drifted away to join Varric, Cullen and Piper on the other couch, and Fenris met Hawke’s eyes. She was still smiling, but there was something else about her expression that made him feel oddly jittery. Something almost… deep, or weighted, but not in a bad way - in a nice, warm way, in fact.
He nervously gnawed the inside of his cheek as he cast around for something to say, but Hawke spoke first. “I’m glad you’re here,” she said.
Her tone was warm and serious. Fenris stared at her, feeling strangely at a loss for words. “I-”
Another handsome blond stranger suddenly swooped in and hugged her. “Hawke! There you are. I was just catching up with Merrill. She was going on about that blood lotus treatment of hers and the talk she gave at the Arlathvhen, it doesn’t sound like it went over too well -”
“Anders, I told you, it wasn’t the blood lotus part they didn’t like,” a small Dalish girl interjected. She folded her arms and frowned at the new blond man. “I just didn’t explain it well. Hawke, can I practice my presentation with you next time, you know I’m not a very good public speaker…”
The blond man shook his head. “There’s not enough evidence to support the use of blood lotus in medicine, Merrill.”
Fenris watched with growing puzzlement as the Dalish girl’s ears began turning red. “Healing isn’t all about Fereldan medicine!” she snapped. “Traditional elvhen healing isn’t worthless just because there’s insufficient research. But try telling that to your research funding bodies!”
“You two do know this is a party, right?” Hawke drawled. “It’s not a medical conference.”
Anders opened his mouth, then released a little chuckle and sat on the platform that the dancing pole was affixed to. “Right. Sorry, Hawke, sometimes I get overexcited -”
“This is Fenris, by the way,” Hawke interrupted. “He works with me and Pipes. Fenris, this is Anders and Merrill. Anders is a doctor. Merrill is a Dalish healer.”
Anders nodded politely, and Merrill smiled at Fenris. “Aneth ara. I’ve never seen vallaslin like yours before.” Her eyes fell on his hands, which were resting on his knees.
He frowned and tucked his hands back into his pockets. “It is not vallaslin. I am not Dalish.”
Merrill’s eyes widened. “Oh. I’m sorry, I thought -”
“Sorry, Hawke, I just have to tell you this one thing,” Anders interrupted excitedly. “I finally got that funding I was telling you about! We’ll be able to start the project in about a month, as soon as we’ve finalized the contract with the lyrium supplier.”
Fenris whipped around and narrowed his eyes at Anders. “You work with lyrium?”
“Yes, of course,” Anders said in surprise. “All physicians in Kirkwall do. It’s the only city in the Free Marches where the use of lyrium is legal across the board.”
“It shouldn’t be,” Fenris said brusquely.
Beside him, Hawke went still. Anders recoiled slightly. “You can’t be serious,” he said slowly. “Lyrium saves lives. It’s both a painkiller and a stimulant for the immune system if it’s used safely-”
“There is no safe way to use lyrium,” Fenris retorted. “It’s a dangerous psychoactive drug. There is an enormous market for it in Tevinter. Where I am from, lyrium sales are the backbone of at least seventy percent of organized crime activities.”
Anders relaxed. “Ah. Well, that’s the problem. The Imperium is a specific case. The distribution is much more regulated and controlled here-”
“There is no controlling it,” Fenris said firmly. “Lyrium might be a painkiller and an immune system stimulant, but it is also extremely addictive. It is a weapon used against the poor and unknowing. Tell me, Doctor, how much does a single lyrium capsule cost?”
Anders frowned, then pursed his lips. “It costs approximately $16 per capsule,” he admitted. “More, depending on the brand.”
Fenris leaned back and stretched his arms along the back of the couch. “And you think that your colleagues in this city aren’t taking advantage of that cost? I have read the local news. There have been multiple cases of physicians putting their most vulnerable patients on a higher dose than they require in order to keep them coming back for more.”
Anders glared at him. “The doctors that do that are the exception. They are not the rule.”
“When money is at play, no one is exempt from such corruption,” Fenris announced. “You are a fool if you think yourself immune.”
Anders shot him a filthy look. “And just who are you to lecture about these matters? You work at a pub. What do you know of it?”
“Hey,” Hawke interjected. “Nothing wrong with working at a pub.”
Fenris scowled at Anders’s dismissive tone. “I know more about the dangers of lyrium than you ever will,” he snapped. “You are protected by your physician’s licence and your research funding. You know nothing of how the illicit sale and misuse of lyrium can devastate a family or a town. Or an entire country, in the case of Tevinter.” His mother’s and Varania’s faces flashed across his mind - dead because of Danarius and his lyrium business.
Fenris had never even gotten to say goodbye. Danarius’s people had already dealt with their bodies by the time Fenris had woken up in the hospital. And then Fenris had sullied their memories by becoming addicted to the very substance that had indirectly claimed their lives.
He inhaled deeply through his nose. It is done, he thought. He couldn’t change his past. He wasn’t addicted to lyrium anymore, and that had to be good enough. “Lyrium is a filthy substance, and it is the lifeblood of Tevinter,” he announced. “The Imperium is a corrupt and foul place, and it would not be so if it was not for the lax attitudes toward lyrium.”
Hawke laughed nervously and tugged at one of her many earrings. “I don’t know, Fenris. I don’t think they’d make lyrium legal in Kirkwall if the doctors and policy-making people hadn’t done their due diligence and all that.”
Fenris shot her a hard look. “Don’t be naive. Just because something is legal does not mean it is right. The legalization of lyrium makes it that much easier to abuse.”
Anders leaned forward. “How can you talk about lyrium like this to Hawke?” he demanded.
Fenris frowned at him. “What are you talking about?” He turned his gaze back to Hawke, who was looking increasingly uncomfortable. “What is he talking about?”
Hawke slowly met his gaze, and Fenris’s stomach jolted uncomfortably at the apologetic look on her face. But Anders piped in before she could speak. “Her father died of a lyrium overdose,” he said. “And it was the best thing for him. He would have been in agony otherwise.”
Fenris stared at her. Bewilderment and anger were churning together in his chest. “What… why…?”
“Cancer,” Hawke said. She picked up her tumbler of brandy and idly swirled it. “It was everywhere. His bones, his brain, his organs, everywhere. We moved to Kirkwall specifically so he could be treated with lyrium. Palliative, of course, since the cancer was incurable.” She took a sip of her drink. “He killed himself with lyrium. But they thought I was the one who gave him the dose that killed him.”
Fenris’s eyes widened. “What?” he blurted. Then the pieces clicked into place. “This is how you know Cullen?”
She nodded. “He got the charges against me dropped. He’s pretty amazing, actually. There’s a good reason Pipes is head-over-heels for him.” She took another gulp of brandy and gave him a crooked little smile. “Anders didn’t even tell you the best part,” she said pleasantly. “Do you know who called the police on me?”
Fenris watched with a growing sense of dread as she finished off the last of her drink, then placed the tumbler on the table and looked at him once more. “My mother,” she said. “My mother called the police and told them I killed my dad.” Her smile widened, and then she started to laugh.
Fenris couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t swallow. He stared at her as she laughed, then rose to her feet. “I’m going to get another drink,” she said cheerfully. “Anyone else want one?”
Merrill and Anders quietly declined, and Fenris dumbly shook his head. Hawke winked and slipped past him, then headed down the stairs without looking back.
As soon as she was gone, Anders glared at him. “Nicely done. You really don’t know her at all, do you?”
Fenris returned his glare, but he couldn’t deny the discomfort roiling in his stomach. Most of the lyrium victims he’d encountered had been young and healthy people looking for an escape. Young elves, primarily, who thought they’d found that escape in Danarius’s dealers as they peddled lyrium as a party drug. The only physicians he’d known were the corrupt ones that Danarius worked with, who misused their prescription privileges and kept their patients addicted to lyrium for years on end. Patients like Fenris himself.
He hadn’t encountered anyone like Hawke’s father: riddled with disease and looking to lyrium for relief.
He rose from the couch, and Anders grabbed his arm. “Leave her alone-”
Fenris wrenched his arm away and pinned Anders with a glare. “Touch me again, and it will be the last thing you ever do.”
Merrill’s eyes grew impossibly large, and Anders glared back at him in silence, and Fenris made his way to the stairs to find Hawke.
*********************
Rynne leaned her elbows on the balcony railing and took another deep breath, then another gulp of her drink. When she’d imagined getting to know Fenris a little better, this was not really what she’d had in mind.
He hates lyrium. The unpleasant truth raced through her mind. Not only that, but he really seemed to hate the people who thought using it was okay. Fenris wasn’t exactly the warm and cuddly type, but she’d never seen him react so negatively toward anyone as he had toward Anders.
But there was nothing Rynne could do about it. She couldn’t change what had happened with her father. Furthermore, she wouldn’t change it even if she had a choice. He’d been suffering, suffering for months and months with no respite even with the strongest doses of lyrium that the doctor was willing to prescribe, and with the fucking law in this city, there had been no choice. The overdose had been a mercy.
She’d had no choice.
Rynne took another gulp of her brandy, and her phone buzzed against her thigh.
She surreptitiously looked around, then reached between her legs and pulled her phone out of the clever little thigh strap that Piper had found during an idle afternoon of browsing around on Amazon.
Her heart did a funny little jump as she checked the screen. The message was from Fenris.
10:17pm - Where are you?
She nibbled her lip, then put her tumbler down and slowly typed out a response.
10:17pm - why? miss me already? ^^
His reply came quickly.
10:18pm - I want to talk to you.
She tugged nervously at her earrings. Why did he want to talk? Was he mad at her? Maybe he just wanted to compliment her dress again? A girl could hope.
She hesitated for a moment, then scoffed at herself. Oh, who am I kidding, she thought. Of course she was going to tell him where she was.
10:18pm - i’m on the balcony. first floor, the door is close to the piano. 10:18pm - and no, before you ask, none of us can play the piano 10:18pm - it’s just there for Isabela to lounge on and look sexy LOL
He didn’t reply, and Rynne eventually tucked her phone back into her thigh sheath and waited with increasing nerves to see if he would show up.
A minute later, the noise of the party spilled out onto the balcony, and Rynne turned to see Fenris stepping outside to join her. He closed the door behind him, shutting out the noise, and then it was just the two of them in the peaceful night air.
Rynne warily watched his face as he slowly approached. He looked… the same as usual. Inscrutable and serious as ever.
She swallowed and rested her elbows on the railing again. “Come to check out the view?” she said breezily. “Kirkwall looks way better at night. It all just looks like fireflies. The darkness really hides the rampant graffiti well.”
He leaned back against the balcony railing and continued to study her in silence, and Rynne turned her gaze back to the city lights, unable to tolerate the intensity of his gaze.
A long, awkward moment later, Fenris finally spoke. “Why did your mother accuse you of killing your father?”
Rynne nervously licked her lips. “Did you know that physician-assisted suicide is illegal in Kirkwall?” she asked.
He didn’t reply, and Rynne finally shot him a very quick glance. He was frowning slightly, but he didn’t look outright angry, so she continued. “My family is from Lothering. They have physician-assisted suicide there, but lyrium is illegal. Here in Kirkwall, lyrium is legal, but physician-assisted suicide isn’t. It’s a stupid catch-22.” She sighed and leaned more heavily on her elbows. “We came here for the pain control. Lyrium is very good for that, especially for terminal cancer patients. But… Maker’s balls, Fenris, my dad’s cancer was everywhere. Even the lyrium wasn’t taking the edge off. And he was too weak for us to take him back to Lothering for physician-assisted suicide. Not that my mother would have agreed to it anyway, she… well, whatever.” Rynne shrugged dismissively. “So one day, when I was alone at home with him, he asked me to help him end it.”
“He asked you...?” Fenris said quietly.
“Not to actually kill him,” she said hurriedly. “But to help him get enough lyrium to… to finish himself off.” She swallowed hard, then shot him a tiny smile. “Did you know you can take lyrium in a bunch of different ways? Pills, shots, ointments, under the tongue, all kinds of ways. My dad was getting it in a number of different ways. So for about a month, he just… cut back on how much he was taking and pretended he wasn’t in agonizing pain. And I helped him keep track of the extra stock.”
She took a deep breath and ruffled her hair. “My mother didn’t know what we were up to. I couldn’t tell her, she… she and Carver were in denial about his prognosis. They thought… Andraste’s tits, I don’t know what they thought. That he wasn’t dying, I suppose. But they didn’t know he was planning this, or they would have tried to stop him. So once he’d stored up enough lyrium to end it all, we chose a day when they were both out running errands, and he just… started taking all of it. The pills, the sublingual tabs, everything.” She tilted her head back and closed her eyes. “By the time Mother and Carver came back, he was gone.”
“So they thought you had done it,” Fenris said quietly.
Rynne nodded. “I was there. The empty blister packs and everything were there. My mother…” She laughed and shook her head. Maker’s balls, her mother had completely lost her shit. Screaming that Rynne had murdered Malcolm, that she would never forgive her, that she hadn’t had a chance to say goodbye…
It didn’t bear thinking about. Rynne shoved the memory away. “She called the police. Carver was too upset to stop her. I mean, I don’t know if he would have stopped her anyway. He’s still pretty mad at me.” She shrugged. “Cullen eventually got wind of the situation and offered to help me out like the obnoxiously good person he is. And that’s my tragic little backstory.” She chuckled weakly.
Fenris was silent for a long time, and Rynne twisted her fingers together as she waited for him to respond. There was one last piece to the story, one that gnawed at the inside of her stomach to this day - not because of the truth of it, but because nobody else knew, not even Piper. No one else knew except for Cullen, who had counselled her not to tell anyone.
Finally Fenris sighed. “Hawke, I… don’t know what to say.”
She shrugged and gave him a wry little half-smile. “It’s all right. It’s pretty heavy shit to share at a party.”
He frowned slightly at her. “No,” he said. “It’s not all right. It… it is as you said. It sucks.”
Rynne smiled more broadly, then laughed. “Are you reusing my words?”
He ran a hand through his snowy hair. “I… Yes, I am. I’m sorry. I am ill-equipped for this kind of… comforting.”
He did look rather discomfited, and for some reason, it made Rynne feel more comfortable. She relaxed against the balcony railing and gently bumped his shoulder with hers. “Don’t worry about it. It sucks, sure, but it was years ago. And Anders had it right - it was the best way for him to go without suffering.”
Fenris nodded and didn’t reply, and they stood in silence for a while.
Then Rynne spoke, very quietly. “Your former gang in Tevinter dealt in lyrium, didn’t they?”
Fenris nodded again. “Yes,” he said. “From mining to street dealing. We - they were involved in every part of it.” He clenched his jaw, and Rynne waited with bated breath until he spoke again.
“They tried to bring my sister into the business,” he said. “She - the others on Danarius’s staff - our house was used sometimes. My sister was naive, and they acted kind to her…” He trailed off and scrubbed an agitated hand through his hair.
“It’s okay,” Rynne said quickly. “You don’t have to talk about it.” He looked so angry and so sad, and her heart felt like it was swelling inside her rib cage, and this was not how she’d expected this party to go.
He shook his head roughly. “It was my fault,” he snapped. “I exposed her and my mother to the lyrium trade. It came into the house because of me. I was meant to protect them, and they’re both dead.”
Rynne’s eyes widened. His mother and his sister were dead? “Oh fuck,” she said. Without thinking about it, she grabbed his hand. “Fenris, I’m so fucking sorry.”
He squeezed her fingers hard. “Lyrium is a sickness,” he told her. His voice was rough and deep and strained. “It’s a sickness, and I brought it into the house.”
She stared into his eyes. His deep, brilliant, angry, self-recriminating green eyes.
She desperately wanted to comfort him. To convince him that he wasn't a bad person. She opened her mouth. “I administered the last shot of lyrium to my dad,” she blurted. “He was too weak to do it himself, and I couldn’t… I couldn’t watch him suffer. So I did it. I… I killed him.”
Fenris’s eyes widened. She smiled weakly. “Cullen is the only one who knows,” she whispered. “All the evidence was circumstantial, so he got me off the hook. But… I know the truth, you know? There was no choice. If I hadn’t, my dad would have lingered on for months longer. I had no choice.”
Fenris was still tightly holding her hand. His eyes were fixed on her face. She squeezed his fingers. “Do you think I’m a monster?” she asked.
He frowned. He released her fingers, then slowly lifted his hand toward her face.
Rynne held her breath as he hesitated. Then, carefully, so very carefully, he wiped a tear from her cheek with his thumb.
“You are not a monster,” he said. He lowered his hand. “You don’t know what a true monster looks like.”
Rynne swallowed hard. Her cheek was tingling from the warmth of his thumb. “You’re not a monster, if that’s what you’re thinking,” she told him. “You’re perfect.”
Fenris’s eyebrows leapt high on his forehead, and Rynne flushed. Damn it, she thought. The word had slipped out before she could stop it. She dropped her eyes and laughed nervously, but before she could speak, Fenris chuckled as well.
“If that is what you think, then you must be quite drunk,” he said.
She glanced up at him. He still looked rather serious, but the corner of his lips was lifted in a hint of a smirk.
A wash of relief loosened her shoulders, and she laughed more genuinely. “Not nearly drunk enough for this conversation,” she joked. She jerked her head at the thumping party inside. “Want to head back in?”
He studied her for a moment, but his gaze was warmer somehow, warmer and more intense than before, and now Rynne found that she couldn’t look away.
Her heart was pounding in her throat. His fucking forest-green eyes were so beautiful. Finally he nodded. “Yes. Let’s go,” he said.
Rynne smiled and followed Fenris back towards the door. Perhaps this party wasn’t a total loss after all.
Why do you have to be different?
Tori was 14 when she realised the power she possessed. At first, it was hard for her to understand the simple things. Why everyone would keep insisting that her eyes were brown when they clearly weren’t. Why she would be able to hear people’s thoughts when she looked them directly in the eye. Why the boy she had had a crush on for 3 years, the man who had never talked to her once in his life before, asked her on a date the second they spoke.
Because of this weird quality that she had, she would be too afraid to look anyone in the eye, take photos of herself or even look in the mirror.
Now she’s 18, a freshman at college, and already the most popular girl at there. Every boy was in love with her and every girl wanted to be her.
Tori was used to the boys ogling over her every move; how perfect and beautiful she was. She wasn’t sure that she believed it, though, that she was beautiful. She knew that they only said it because of the spell and so she could never really trust that their words were sincere.
“Okay so today we’re going to start a new project for this semester, a project in which you have to prove or disprove a hypothesis. The hypothesis you will be working on will be all up to you and your partner.”
“Partner?” Tori sighed.
Please can we choose. Please can we choose.
“And of course, I’ll be choosing your partners.”
Of course.
The lecturer pulled up a box of names and turned back to the rest of the students.
“Let’s start, shall we?”
“Victoria,” she said, reading off the name on the paper she had taken out and then reached her hand back in, “And…”
Please not a guy, please not a guy.
“Taehyung.”
Tori exhaled.
Of course.
It’s just my luck I get paired with a guy.
When she was done announcing the partners, they were to move to the lab, in which they had to sit in their pairs.
She knew the name ‘Kim Taehyung’, and she knew the reputation that came with that name. He was the smartest in their year and was also rumoured to be the geekiest. No one really talked to him and he normally kept to himself, Tori didn’t even know what he looked like.
She sat down at the desk on which the lecturer plastered her name with Taehyung’s name and waited. Soon enough she heard some books thump onto the table and she turned around.
“H-Hi,” he muttered, looking to the floor as he pulled out the seat.
Tori couldn’t help but smile.
He’s cute. For a nerd.
“Hi,” she waited for him to get settled and he slowly lifted his head, “I’m Tori.”
“I’m Tae-” he held out his hand and looked up at her, into her eyes. But as soon as he did, his eyes widened and she sighed, getting ready for him to either compliment her or gush over how pretty she was, in his head. “Y-Your eyes…”
“Huh?”
“I’ve n-never seen anyone with purple eyes before… I didn’t even think that was possible.”
“My eyes are purple?”
She watched him, speechless.
Even when she would keep insisting to her family, her friends, that when she looked in the mirror each morning, she saw purple eyes staring back at her, everyone would keep telling her that they saw brown. They saw normal brown eyes, and she was forced to think she was going insane.
But he sees purple eyes?
“S-Sorry,” he said immediately, looking to the ground, “I won’t look at them again.”
She didn’t take that answer and instead reached forward, placing her hand on his shoulder. He recoiled at her touch, completely surprised that she even did so.
“You just said my eyes were purple, didn’t you?”
He turned around to face the front, shaking his head, “Y-Yeah, aren’t they?”
“Yeah… I thought so too,” she peered at him, wondering why she wasn’t able to hear his thoughts. “Taehyung, can you look at me for a second?”
He stopped what he was writing, frozen for a while.
“Taehyung?”
He slowly turned around and looked up.
Tori searched for his eyes. It was hard to do, he had hair hanging over his forehead, threading their way above his eyes, and the large rimmed glasses he wore weren’t helping either.
“Don’t you… feel any different after seeing me?” she asked, squinting at him, asking herself over and over again why she can’t hear his thoughts.
“No, just weirded out by your eyes… I mean, I’ve never met anyone else with purple eyes before.”
There he goes again.
Purple eyes.
“Alright can we get you two working on this instead of on working on each other?” the teacher snapped and the two of them turned to look at her.
“Sorry, I’m sorry,” Taehyung jumped out of his seat and bowed to her multiple times, his cheeks flushing a bright red.
Tori eyed him, not being able to figure anything out.
It had been 18 years of the same deal.
A guy looks her in the eyes and falls in love with her instantly.
A guy looks her in the eyes and she can hear his thoughts, immediately.
But now, because of him, everything was different. Everything was unsure.
“So what do you think we should investigate?” she tried to push her thoughts to the back of her head.
“Okay, what are your interests?”
“Uhm, mostly the medical, human side of science, but I really wouldn’t mind anything,” she told him and he nodded, turning in to the table again.
“Good, that’s my favourite side of science too, so anything specific?”
“Hm… diseases? Genes and mutations? But I don’t really mind anything,” she said and he couldn’t help but crack a smile.
“You’re a bit indecisive aren’t you?”
This time it was Tori that froze, the minute he smiled.
How could his smile be that… cute? Beautiful? Mischievous?
How could he be so adorable and not have a girlfriend?
His mouth pulled back, revealing his straight teeth while his eyes turned into upside down crescents. And was that smile the shape of a rectangle? Although she could only see his side profile, she couldn’t stop herself from staring.
This is that super smart geek with no friends that everyone was talking about?
No one mentioned that he was super cute as well.
“Yeah, I am,” she moved in closer to the table.
“Well, we could do something on the recent discovery of a gene mutation that causes Atherosclerosis? It was just in the news,” he suggested and Tori nodded and then shook her head.
“Athero-what?”
“Atherosclerosis, in short, it can cause heart disease, and some scientists have found that it’s caused by a genetic mutation.”
“Oh okay,” she nodded, “Let’s do that then.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, I’m fine with it.”
“O-Okay,” he nodded, vigorously.
“Can you tell me a bit about it?” Tori asked, leaning forward slighting, somehow compelled by the way Taehyung seemed so interested in this topic.
“About Atherosclerosis? Okay, well, it’s a specific form of arteriosclerosis in which an artery wall thickens as a result of invasion and accumulation of white blood cells,” he was using his hands to help him explain but Tori couldn’t stop watching the way his eyes lit up, the slight smile pulling at his lips as he talked about it, “and containing both living active WBCs, sometimes called inflammation, and remnants of dead ce-” he stopped when he turned around to look at Tori. “I’m sorry, I’m boring you aren’t I?”
“No!” she sat up straight, “No, I was listening, so inflammation causes the white blood cells to die…”
He shook his head, “It’s okay, we’ll learn over time.”
--
As soon as Tori was out of that class, she bolted to her best friend’s locker and was thankful to see her leaning against it, on her phone.
“Yah! Jen! Jen!”
“Yeah?” she asked, annoyingly looking up at her best friend running toward her.
“Jen, what colour are my eyes?”
“Ugh not this again,” she rolled her eyes and turned around to her locker, opening it. “Let’s go get lunch,” she said as she pulled out her wallet.
“No, Jen, I’m being serious.”
“Purple, Tori they’re purple.”
“What? Really?”
“That’s what you wanted me to say, right? No, Tori, they’re still brown, like the last time you asked me, and the time before that. Brown, your eyes are brown, please stop asking me this now.”
“B-Bu-”
Taehyung said they were purple.
