Apple Of My Eye | E.M.
You and your coworker Eddie finally do something about your longtime mutual crush when he asks you out after a wild day at work â line cook!eddie x waitress!reader fluff
warnings: customer service nightmares, reader cries over it, I think that's it actually
words: 4.8k
The last thing you heard before shutting the walk-in freezer door behind you was a pan dropping to the floor and Eddie cursing loudly at no one in particular. You sat down with your back against a sack of potatoes beside the vegetable shelf.Â
The tears that pricked at your eyes were free to run down your face now that you were in the privacy of the walk-in. Itâs always been a good place to cry or scream if you were frustrated at work.Â
You were slightly startled by the heavy door opening, but you knew you shouldnât be; other people worked here too, of course.Â
It was Eddie walking in, looking frustrated, though his expression softened when he locked eyes with you.Â
âAre you okay? What happened?â He asked, letting the door close as he sat down next to you.
You scooted a bit to make more room for Eddie, but still brushed him off.
âIâm okay.â You sniffled, looking down at your feet. âDonât you have a whole bunch of orders to fill?â
âYou know Iâm never too busy for you.â He replied, which earned a smile from you.Â
It was a true thing, Eddie would always take the time, even in the busiest of rush hours, to compliment you, or make you a special plate of fries, or just let you know that your makeup had smudged in all the haste.Â
He never did it with anyone else, not to the same level, at least. All your coworkers used that as proof that he had a thing for you in the same way that you did for him, but you never believed them.Â
âSo, whatâs wrong, sweetheart?â
There he goes, using that nickname that makes your heart soar. Now how could you not answer him after he asked as nicely as that?
âSome asshole got mad at me âcause I forgot he asked for no vegetables on his burger. He was calling me dumb and saying Iâm a bad waitress andââ
âYouâre not.â Eddie told you. âDonât listen to him.â
One look at Eddieâs pretty brown eyes told you he was being completely sincere, but you were still upset.Â
âHe was so mean, and he was kind of right.â You protested.Â
Eddie shook his head. âTrust me, heâs not. Youâre the only coworker I can stand, so you must be doing something right. Plus you just got your degree, so youâre not dumb.â
âIt was community college, Eddie.â
âMore than I have. Are you calling me dumb?â He nudged you slightly as he teased, and he was finally cheering you up.Â
âNo.â You shook your head, a bashful smile starting on your face.Â
âGood.â He smiled too, happy that his mission of cheering you up was complete. âNow, I would wipe your tears, but my hands are probably covered in oil so Iâm gonna need you to do it for me, okay?â
You nodded and used your index finger to wipe the tears under your eyes and on your cheeks.Â
The line cook had his eyes trained on you when you looked up back at him, your eyes still glossy but your spirits higher.Â
âHow are you feeling now?â
âBetter.â You admitted with a soft smile. âThank you, Eddie.â
âAnytime, princess.â He attempted to stifle a groan as he stood up, then stopped before opening the metal door. âIâll tell Robin to cover your tables for a bit, so donât worry about getting back to work. You can stay here as long as you want.â
After thanking him again, he flashed you a smile before exiting the freezer room.Â
You stayed sitting there, replaying the conversation you just had once over in your head. Once you felt you were composed, you dusted off your clothes and reentered the kitchen.Â
Though, as soon as you left the freezer, you could hear shouting coming from the front of house and you knew exactly who it was.Â
See, after Eddie left the freezer, when you were busy wiping your tears, Eddie rifled through the receipts to find exactly the guy who made you cry. Not that he needed it anyways, it was obvious who the asshole was when he walked out to the tables and saw some angry looking loser picking at his french fries.Â
Now Eddie was in the middle of shaming the man in front of the whole diner.Â
Customers had their heads turned to watch the public scolding, and all the staff had paused their duties to stare from the sides of the room as well.Â
âWhat the hellâs the matter with you? Youâre a grown man and you canât even bear to pick some tomatoes off your burger? You need to whine about the lingering taste of fuckinâ lettuce and make your poor waitress feel like shit?!â Eddie shouted at the guy you were serving. âYou better give her one hell of an apology, you hear me?!â
The man nodded pathetically, clearly shaken by the cookâs rant. He probably couldnât muster up an agreement even if he tried.Â
Robin, who you had stood next to while watching Eddie chew that customer out, turned to you. She hardly looked flustered at all, since she was used to the dinerâs usual activities.Â
âAnd you still doubt that he likes you back.â She whispered with a smugly raised eyebrow.Â
Eddie looked around the room for a moment and noticed you were there. With an outstretched hand and a soft voice, he beckoned you towards him and the man at the booth.Â
âSweetheart, can you come over here for a second?â He asked, ever so politely.Â
You obliged and walked over to him, holding your breath as the threat of crying again was still there.Â
Standing at the end of the table, Eddieâs gaze panned from you to the slightly terrified man sitting down.Â
âNowâs the time for that apology, dickwad.â Your coworker gritted.Â
The man struggled to look you in the eyes as he stuttered out some words of regret. âIâm sorryâ Er, Iâm sorry for complaining about the burger and saying all that rude stuff, too. I shouldnât have taken out my anger on you.â
The line cook looked over at you, gauging your reaction. âHow was that?â
You nodded and flashed him a tiny smile, then told the customer that you accepted his apology.Â
âGood.â Eddie declared. âNow Iâll go make you a plain, boring burger. And if youâre really sorry then this pretty girl better see a damn good tip when you finish your meal, got it?â
The man nodded meekly once again, and Eddie seemed satisfied with that. He walked back on over to the kitchen while you made your way to your other tables, and the rest of the diner resumed eating and conversingâdefinitely discussing what just happened.
For the rest of his meal, the man was nice to you. Avoidant for sure, but nice nevertheless. And when he paid, he left a whopping twenty dollar tip and left in a hurry.Â
Now that the lunch rush was over, you checked the kitchen for Eddie, then Jonathan informed you that he was out back taking a smoke break.Â
You thanked him, and headed to the back exit of the building where you knew the cook spent a part of every shift. Sure enough, he was standing right next to the door with a cigarette in hand.Â
âHey, princess,â Eddie said, exhaling a cloud of smoke away from you. âwhat are you doing back here?â
You smiled at him and fished the twenty dollar bill out of your pocket to display it. âThat guy you yelled at left me a pretty nice tip. Here, itâs yours.â
He shook his head and held out a hand to gesture that he couldnât take it. âNo way, you deserve it. Fuckinâ least you should get after having to deal with that asshole.â
You laughed at his dismissal and tried offering again.Â
âCome on, you practically mugged that guy to get this money, you have to take it.â
He looked at you with a slight grin, but you couldnât decide if his expression was that of smugness or entertainment.Â
âYou can hold out that cash until your wrist falls off, I wonât take your money.â
You let out an exasperated sigh, sincere but still purposefully overdramatic. You put the bill back in your apron and quickly counted out ten ones that you had earned from other tables, then held those out instead.Â
âYou should at least have half. I canât let you leave with nothing. If you donât take it now, Iâll follow you around all day, begging you to take it.âÂ
Eddie cocked his head to the side and smiled. âAs tempting as that is, sweetheart, I canât steal you away from your job like that. Iâll take that money, but Iâll be spending it on you.âÂ
Your heart fluttered at Eddieâs flirting, which was far less subtle than usual. You had to bite the tip of your tongue to prevent yourself from grinning ear-to-ear.Â
He reached out to take the cash, but he was still grinning mischievously.Â
âWith my half of the cash, I wanna take you on a date, if youâll let me.â
Holy shit. You never thought heâd ask. And you had expected even less that he would ask in such a gentlemanly manner. Eddie was the type of guy to accidentally tell his boss to fuck off after coming into work hungover, not use the phrase âif youâll let meâ.Â
âIâd like that.â You responded, way more chill than you had expected your reaction to be. âAnything you have in mind?â
âYou trying to expose the fact that Iâve thought about this before?â Eddie smirked, which in turn caused you to blush even more than before. âWhat time do you get off work tonight?â
âSeven, and you?â
âSame. We can rent a movie and I can make you dinner at my place?âÂ
Shit, Eddie thought, I donât remember the state I left my trailer in.Â
He tried recalling how messy he left his home, quickly so he could take back the offer if needed.Â
âYeah, sounds great.âÂ
Too late now. But as nervous as he was for you to walk into his trailer and see a bunch of dirty dishes and laundry piles, the feeling of glee he felt because you said yes was trumping that a hundred times over.Â
âPerfect.â Eddie said, stamping out his burnt cigarette. He opened the door back to the restaurant and held it open so you could go first. âAfter you.â
âThanks.â You said, barely able to hide your giddy grin. âI gotta get back to my tables, but Iâll see you at seven.â
You both parted ways with matching smiles, hoping the rest of your shifts fly by faster than usual. For the rest of the day, you seemed to have an extra pep in your step while you waited tables.Â
As seven oâclock approached, you passed off all your tables to other coworkers, told Steve and Robin you wouldnât need a ride home, and headed to the washroom to fix your hair and touch up your makeup.Â
Once you were satisfied, you headed to the locker room, where Eddie was standing casually against his own locker. His bored expression morphed into a bright look when he saw you walk in.Â
âHey.â Eddie said as you opened your locker and put away your apron. âReady to go?âÂ
You nodded, and he opened the door for you once again. Such a gentleman when he wants to be.Â
âSo, any movie ideas?â He asked as you both got into his van.Â
âSomething fun.â You told him. âMaybe something like Ferris Bueller's Day Off or Splash?âÂ
âAnything you want.â
For the ride over to the video store, you listened to the radioâa station with both pop and rockâand chatted about everything under the sun.Â
Once you got to Family Video, you headed towards the comedy section whereas Eddie got distracted by a display of staff picks near the front. He called your name, and you turned around to see him holding up The Texas Chain Saw Massacre with a simper.Â
âThis can be fun, donât you think?â
You shook your head. âNot if weâre eating tonight. Iâll throw up everywhere. And thatâs not the kind of thing that earns a second date.â
He put it down and walked towards the aisle you were standing in. âSo youâre already thinking about a second date, huh?âÂ
You rolled your eyes and went back to browsing the shelves. Your eyes landed on a familiar favourite, so you grabbed it and held it up to show Eddie.Â
âClue, huh?â He raised an eyebrow. âI thought you said you couldnât do murder movies?â
âNo, I just said I couldnât do that one. This one is hilarious and agreeable.â
âAlright. Hand it over, I already promised to pay for whatever you want.â
You give the tape to him like he asked and you both walk over to the cashier, a teenager who looked extremely disdainful about his job. Eddie pulled out some of the cash you had made him take earlier and placed it on the counter.Â
Once the transaction was over, you thanked both Eddie and the bored worker, then you headed back out to Eddieâs car.Â
âSo, what meal are you going to spend the remaining five dollars and something cents on?â You asked him, buckling yourself as he rolled out of the parking lot.Â
Eddie always hated his seatbelt, but he put it on after youââcause of that damn new law they put in last year.
âIâll put that in my pocket and save it for the next date. I already have all I need for dinner at home.â
You hummed, slightly surprised.Â
âWhat?âÂ
âNothing.â You shrugged. âI just wouldnât have pegged you as a chef outside of the diner. You always seem like youâre done with cooking forever when you clock out.â
âYouâve got me there.â Eddie responds. âI only cook at home when itâs for someone else. When Iâm alone, my meals are mostly toast and canned pasta.â
âSo who else were you planning on cooking for? You said you have all those ingredients.â That was half teasing, half genuinely curious about Eddieâs personal life.Â
âMy uncle, actually. I cook him dinner once a week, mostly âcause it proves to him that I can eat healthy.â
âThatâs really sweet.â
âWhat can I say?â Eddie shrugged dramatically. âIâm just a sweet guy.â
Once you arrived at Eddieâs trailer, he was relieved to open the door and see that his place hadnât been left in shambles. The place wasnât as neat as he would like for a first dateâespecially one with youâbut it was good enough.Â
âSo, this is it.â Eddie said, arms outstretched like a real estate agent. âYou want a tour or is that just for stuffy old people?â
âIâll take a tour.â
Eddie was kind of hoping you didnât say that. The trailer was small and he was a little embarrassed. But he supposed it was his own fault for asking in the first place.Â
âAlright. Hereâs the living room, itâs where I smoke and watch TV.âÂ
You let out a giggle at the bluntness of his tour. He was glad his joke (half-joke) didnât fall flat.Â
âAnd you can follow me three feet to the kitchen, which is where I make good meals for others and crap for myself.â
He opened a cupboard full of canned food and snacks for the realtor effect, then did the same with the fridge. He waved a hand near it like a magician showing off a box that no longer contains a woman in a sparkly leotard.Â
âWe can then move on to the bathroom. Itâs got a shower with mediocre water pressure, a pretty average toilet, and a sink thatâs covered in toothpasteâdonât look at that, actually.â
You kept walking to the only other real room in the trailer, his bedroom. It was about the size of the kitchen area, and it was very distinctly Eddie. All the walls were covered floor-to-ceiling in posters for metal bands and movies he likes, every surface was covered in snack boxes and ashtrays, and he had one incredibly cool guitar hanging in the middle of his wall.Â
After staring at the room for so long that you probably had at least one wall memorised, you and Eddie both realised you hadnât spoken in a while.Â
âThis is where the magic happens.â Eddie said, not quite as smoothly as he was going for.Â
âThe magic?â You teased.Â
He thought for a second, then clarified. âNot that kind of magic. I just make music and write Dungeons & Dragons campaigns.â
âThat can be pretty magical.â You shrugged.Â
âYeah, but not as magical as the dinner Iâm about to make for you. If youâre not excited already, you should start.â
You both left his bedroom and Eddie instructed you to relax in the living room and turn on the TV to something you could use as a backdrop while Eddie cooked.Â
While he made dinner, you sat comfortably on his couch and chatted with him from the other room. You got to know each other, more than you do at work. Eddie told you about his band and how they play at The Hideout, you told him about your time at community college and your friends outside of the diner.Â
âAlright, soupâs on.â Eddie announced, setting two plates on his kitchen table and inviting you over. âActually, itâs not soup, itâs chicken parm.â
âI appreciate the clarification.â You sat down in the seat closest to you. âIt looks good. Smells amazing too.â
And it really was as amazing as it seemed. Although you were no stranger to Eddieâs cooking, all youâve ever had made by him was diner food. Of course, the diner food was great, but this was another level. You werenât sure what set it apart; maybe it was just the quality ingredients and lack of yelling while cooking.Â
Once your plate was almost empty, Eddie asked if you wanted dessert too. You were slightly confused as you hadnât seen him make any dessert to go along with the meal, but you agreed anyway.Â
âDid you make dessert?â You asked after he stood up.Â
âNope, but Iâve got all the ingredients, so I can make it now.â
âOh.â You suddenly felt bad, even though he already offered and went through with making you food. âWell, I donât want to put you out. We can just watchââ
âItâs okay. I donât have the ingredients for anything fancy. Just the simple stuff.â
That made you feel a little better. You were still curious, but for a different reason now. What could Eddie make quickly to pair with that fantastic dinner.Â
You watched as he pulled out Oreos and gummy worms. Was he making a childâs favourite snack as your dessert?
âWhat are you planning there?â You asked him.Â
Then you saw him open the fridge and pull out chocolate pudding cups, then it all clicked in your head.Â
Holy shit. Worms and Dirt.Â
That was absolutely not what you were expecting, but it was definitely a welcome surprise.Â
âI was thinking about just serving up sliced apples and peanut butter along with some cheesy pick-up line like âyouâre the apple of my eyeâ, but I figured that would scare you away.âÂ
âI donât think that would scare me away.â You told him. âIn fact, I would have found it cute. But Iâm happy with the pudding.â
Eddie was quite flattered by that, though he tried hard to not let it show. You could definitely see a blush on his cheeks and the corners of his lips turning upwards, as much as he covered it up.
âYou ever had Worms and Dirt?â He asked, opening up the Oreo pack.Â
âYeah.â You answered from your seat at the table while he scraped off the cookie filling. âMy mom used to make it for me when I was a kid.â
Eddie stopped preparing the food for a second as he turned and gave you a genuine smile.Â
âMe too.âÂ
After that, Eddie went back to making the dessert, the happy expression still lingering on his lips.Â
âIâm almost done, do you want to pop the movie in while Iâm finishing up?â
You nodded, then waltzed over to the living room to start up Clue. While the opening credits rolled, Eddie took a seat next to you on the couch and spread out a couple bowls and several pudding cups on his coffee table.Â
He handed you a spoon and gestured to the setup in front of you two.Â
âI figured we could do like a make-your-own thing, just âcause I always find one is never enough, and then you can choose your portions, you know?â
You hummed in agreement. âItâs a pretty good idea.â
Eddie then pointed to the bowl in between the cookie crumble and gummy worms. Inside that one was the creme filling he had just scraped out of the Oreos.Â
âOh, and thatâs for you.âÂ
Just like Eddie earlier, you were super flattered but didnât want to show your cards. You thanked him for saving you the best part, and then the two of you made your desserts and brought your attention to the movie.Â
Somewhere along the way while watching it, you and Eddie had moved from your spots on opposite ends of the couch to meeting somewhere in the middle, wrapped up with each other.Â
You were pressed against his side with a hand on his back and an arm around his abdomen. He had his arm slung around your shoulder, and you liked it. He liked it too. And truth be told, you had both pictured yourself before in this exact positionâamong others.Â
As Wadsworth dramatically ran through each murder and event of the night, Eddie subtly looked down to see your entertained expression trained on the TV screen.Â
Even though Eddie quite liked the movie you were watching, he liked you more. He was trying to think of a way to make a bigger move on you instead of actually paying attention.Â
He was about to do it too. Just as his hands started to wander, there was a knock at his front door that caused you both to back off of each other and turn your heads that way.Â
âItâs probably just some kid looking for weed. Iâll be back in a second, you donât need to pause it.â Eddie told you as he stood up.
âOkay. Hurry up or youâll miss the ending!â You told him.Â
He opened the door and sure enough, it was a kid looking for weed. Some high schooler, maybe seventeen years old. In one hand, he had a couple crumpled bills, and the other one was in his pocket.Â
âSomeone told me to come here for⌠stuff.â The kid said to Eddie.Â
âOkay, how much do you want?â Eddie replied.Â
The boy looked confused, thinking it through.Â
âI donât know.â He finally answered. âI was just told to bring money.âÂ
âOkay, well Iâve got someone over and youâre wasting my time a little bit. How about you just hand me that money, and Iâll bring you whatever thatâs worth?â
âOkay.âÂ
The kid handed over the cash and Eddie told him to stay at the door while he counted the money and walked over to his bedroom.Â
He came out with a small baggie in his hand and flashed you a quick apologetic grin before facing the kid again.Â
âThere you go. Enjoy.âÂ
Eddie shut the door behind him and walked back to the couch to sit with you again, just as the movie was wrapping up.Â
âIâm sorry about that. I was hoping tonight could go interrupted, but thatâs never the case, right?âÂ
âYeah, itâs alright. I didnât know you still dealt.â
The staff at the diner was pretty close-knit, and you had heard lots about Eddie selling drugs in high school, but you had figured that was in the past. You werenât judging, though. People do what they can to pay the billsâyou were both working in a diner at the edge of your crappy town, you know all about that.Â
âI donât really. Just from time to time, I guess.â Eddie shrugged. âDoes that bother you?â
âNo. Everyoneâs gotta do what they can in life. I donât have a problem, as long as youâre okay with it.âÂ
âCool.â
You both just looked at each other for a second, not sure what to say now. Eddie missed the perfect opportunity to make the move he wanted to make on you earlier, and now the movie was over.Â
You both silently cursed yourself for not doing what you really wanted to do earlier, but the mood was interrupted by a kid at the door wanting to get high.Â
Although you wanted to stay at Eddieâs place for longer, you knew the night was coming to a natural end.Â
âI should probably get home soon. I have work in the morning.âÂ
Eddie was mentally kicking himself for not doing anything earlier, but he definitely wasnât going to try and convince you to stay since he was aware how that could make him seem.Â
âYeah, okay. I can drive you home.â He stood up and grabbed his car keys from the counter. âYou know, Steveâs probably already getting his beauty sleep or something.â
You thanked Eddie and strolled over to him, who was holding the door open for you.Â
The two of you walked out to his van, and you slid into the same seat where you had begun the evening. Eddie sat down next to you and flashed you a quick smile before starting the car.Â
The ride back to your place was, for the most part, quiet and awkward; it was a sad change from the chemistry you were feeling just an hour ago.Â
When you arrived back home, Eddie stopped the car, but you spoke before you got out and the night would be officially over.Â
âThanks for tonight, Eddie. I think we should do this again.â
He looked flustered for a moment. It was no more than a second, but you caught it anyway.
âWell, thanks for saying yes, sweetheart. Are you doing anything Sunday?â
âI have a shift in the morning, but Iâm done by the early afternoon.â
âPerfect.â Eddie smiled. âIâll think of something for us to do then.â
You unbuckled your seatbelt as you badly masked a grin.Â
âOkay. Itâs a date.â
Eddie opened the door on his side, and so you followed suit.Â
âYou want me to walk you back?â Eddie offered.Â
You stood a foot and a half away from Eddie beside his van and looked back to your apartment building.Â
âSteve and Robin are probably pressed against the peephole right now, so I donât know.â
Eddie ran his hand through his hair and shook his head amusedly. âAh, I see. Youâve already got people looking out for you?â
You hummed, biting your lip softly.Â
âSoâŚâ You trailed off.Â
âSo?â Eddie raised an eyebrow.Â
Thatâs when you finally took your chance. You leaned forward and pressed a kiss to Eddieâs cheek, just by the corner of his mouth.Â
You backed away, and Eddie seemed flustered but happy, so you knew it went well.Â
âThanks again. Iâll see you at work, yeah?â
âYeah.â Eddie said quietly. âSee you.â
It wasnât often that Eddie flustered like that. Usually he was calm and collected, or at least yelling, if weâre talking about being in the kitchen at the diner. But very rarely did Eddie blush, and thatâs exactly what he did after you kissed him.Â
He guessed that it made a lot of sense that you could be the one to make him feel things that no one else can.Â
Eddie watched as you walked over to the front of your building and gave him a wave before going inside. His thoughts were moving so fast, he canât even remember if he waved back. Damn, he hopes he waved back.Â
Then, as soon as you were inside and you were both out of each otherâs sight, Eddie had to let out his excitement. He took a step out and threw his head forward, shouting at the top of his lungs.Â
He stopped the moment he realised you might be able to hear him, and quickly went back into his van. Then he started shouting inside the privacy of those metal walls.Â
Eddie was really excited about seeing you tomorrow.Â
Little to Eddieâs knowledge, you were just as excited as him, if not even more.

it helps me to remember when i get sad about how annoyed lydia gets in s4 is that sheâs fourteen at that point so she is ACTIVELY going through puberty. and weâre all kind of annoyed with the world at that point, even the people we love.
that's very true. she's also known him for years at that point, and he can be uhh a lot. he can't get away with displaying his huge flaws as often as he used to, lydia doesn't allow it, and when he DOES get away with it, the episode ends with lydia disappointed and even outright mad at him. Midnight Scum in particular is so hard to watch, you can see her losing respect for him as the episode progresses and...then it ends. episode over. beetlejuice is horrible, what did we expect?
but yeah season 4 is. whoof man.
sure, you can chalk up part of it to teenage hormones making her more irritable, but i really do think she's just like, at her limit sometimes. i can't blame her, i too want to strangle him a lot of the time and i'm not even the one putting up with his shit, babysitting him or having to deal with the consequences of HIS actions.
this isn't Critter Sitters anymore, she is simply not having it and she won't make a cute little excuse for him "oh he makes me laugh and eats bugs hee hee"
season 4 lydia reacting at his jokes like đđ
she's probably heard that one a thousand times by now. beetlejuice is a static character; he doesn't change, he doesn't go through character development, he doesn't learn his lesson (outright refuses to) but lydia DOES change. and she will continue to change as she grows older. and i KNOW this is a sad theory but i can't help but think that, as she grows and moves forward, she's just...gonna leave him behind.
it'll be hard for her not to. not only is she starting to make her own life and will continue to get busier and busier and not having time to hang out with her ghoulish best friend...she's also maturing. something beetlejuice has never done, and seemingly never will. and as she grows more mature, those puns and pranks and hijinks will become less funny, and his lying, clinginess and refusal to grow will become more evident. season 4 has lydia expecting better of him and being let down, constantly. if it's exasperating for us imagine how it must be for her.
at what point does it become too much? how often has lydia sat and thought about this kind of thing? considering how intelligent and sensible she is for her age, probably more than a few times. this dead guy inadvertently saved this depressed little girl by becoming friends with her and giving her the confidence to be herself and make her own friends. does she know that though? beetlejuice does, he saw it when they showed him the reality in which lydia never meets him. but lydia has no idea (and he will never tell her) so sometimes i wonder if she's missing that key aspect of why he's so important in her life. it's possible she might've come to the same conclusion herself; but even then, these things can be hard to remember when you're having to, once more, clean up after him and the messes he gets them into because his chaotic impulses are always stronger than him. you can tell she's very tired of this. and she will become even more so as time passes.
best friends forever though.
...
...right?

đŹđŽđŚđŚđđŤđ˛: spencer struggles with a relapse in addiction after emily's death when he meets you, a person who wants to help everyone around.
đđ°: there's going to be a lot⌠all topics related to mental health issues, mentioning the death of a loved one, suicide, relapse into addiction, violence. stay safe guys đ/đ§: please, read before reading. this is the full, ridiculously long version of "with the light off" that I posted yesterday. iâve never seen a fanfiction this long on tumblr, and i wonât lie, i'm fking insane.
đ°đ¨đŤđđŹ: 25k
Spencer Reid was a genius.
Everyone knew it; he knew it himself, though he didnât always see himself that way. Itâs not difficult to explain what a genius is. One defining trait was that his brain worked at an incredibly fast pace. Metaphorically speaking, of course. In any case, he had no trouble connecting facts and forming assumptions that later proved accurate. With the amount of knowledge he had about various situations and people, it wasnât hard to predict the course of certain similar events. It was simply a matter of connecting the proverbial dotsâthatâs what the vast majority of his work entailed. The rest involved risking his own life, something he had recently experienced in a painful way.
Spencer knew hundreds of stories about people struggling with addiction. He had read just about every available resource on the subject, trying to help himself. He understood the topic from firsthand experience and was aware that relapses were entirely normal in the face of difficult life situations. Yet, once he had overcome his addiction, he never imaginedâ even in his darkest visionsâthat he would ever reach for Dilaudid again.
But thatâs exactly what he did. Well, technically speaking, not yet. But it was only a matter of timeâminutes, to be exact.
He was walking through the city with the drug in his coat pocket, as if it were an ordinary item, like a wallet or car keys. At the same time, he felt as though everyone was staring at him. A shiver ran through his body every time he accidentally made eye contact with someone. She knows what Iâm about to do. He knows too. They all do.
He was acting like a complete paranoiac.Â
He had a substantial dose of Dilaudid on him and knew heâd take it the moment he was alone in his apartment. Yet, he hadnât used itâhe was still technically clean. Could he call it SchrĂśdingerâs relapse?
He started to laugh, a bit hysterically, as he fumbled to open the door. Suddenly, the key seemed too large, or maybe the keyhole had somehow shrunk? Or perhaps his hands were simply shaking so much that he couldnât line it up? The second option seemed far more likely, though admitting it was difficult for someone as devoted to logic as he was.
Spencer pressed his forehead against the door, taking a deep breath. He was ready to break down the damn thingâŚ
âEverything alright, sweetheart?â came a voice behind him.
He turned around. One of his neighbors had poked her head out from the apartment across the hallâa sweet-faced elderly woman with an even kinder demeanor. Talkative and prone to asking questions. Knowing her love of sensation (she really did seem to have more energy and bravery than he, an FBI agent, did), it wasnât all that surprising sheâd stepped outside the moment she heard strange noises from the hallway.
Her question, the very presence of another person, somehow brought him back to reality.
"Just fine, Mrs. Schulz," he said, forcing a calm tone.
Standing with his back to her, he closed his eyes and took a deep, slower breath. His neighbor lingered for a moment in her doorway, and even without looking, he could imagine the suspicious look on her face. But finally, he heard the sound of her door closingâsheâd let it go.
He slapped himself on the cheek, trying to snap out of it. He hadnât been drinkingâhe was just coming back from a funeralâbut he felt dazed, as if he were drunk. Slowly, he raised his hands again, and this time he slid the key into the lock without issue.
He didnât even turn on the light or take off his coat; he went straight to the bedroom and tossed what could only be called a junkieâs kit onto the bed. In a plastic bag were a clean syringe and the main event.
Dilaudid.
He hadnât wanted anything this badly in a shockingly long time. Heâd promised heâd never touch it again. Heâd made that promise to JJ and Gideon, but most importantly, to himself. Only when he pictured their faces and heard their voices in his mind did doubts start to creep in. He couldnât get addicted again.
But on the other hand, did using it just this once, after all this time, really mean falling back into addiction? He knew people who had quit smoking years ago but occasionally had a cigaretteâjust to see if it still tasted the same. Theyâd end up thinking, Wow, was I really addicted to this? Itâs disgusting!
It should be the same for him. Heâd do it once, just this one time.
He recognized that particular thought. It was the voice of addiction.
He ran a hand over his face. Heâd once gone to a support group for people struggling with addiction, sitting in the back, practically hiding, but he listened intently. That was what they talked aboutâhow to separate his own thoughts from those of addiction. It all came down to the fact that addiction had no real power over him; it couldnât physically force him to take the drug, only tempt and seduce him.
And he had to fight it.
He ran his hands through his hair, and then, on impulse, grabbed the bag on the bed and shoved it into the small safe in his nightstand. He kept his gun and badge there, along with his most valuable belongings. And now, also, the thing that could destroy him.
Breathing heavily, he backed out into the hallway. He couldnât stay in the apartment. If he did, heâd give in. The problem was, he didnât really have anywhere to go. He didnât want to show up at JJâs or any other team memberâs door; he didnât want to admit his moment of weakness. Besides, that day had been Emilyâs funeralâeveryone was too absorbed in their own grief to have to worry about him too.
The only place that came to mind was the library.
In his teenage years, it had been his only, truest friend. Heâd spend hours there, loving the feeling of being surrounded by walls of books. He loved running his fingers over hardcovers, as if reading a message written in Braille. And above all, he loved to read. Was there any better escape from reality?
The next hours were spent immersed in the works of his favorite authors, pinching the back of his hand every time his thoughts wandered toward Dilaudid. A red mark appeared on his skin, and after another attempt, he began to bleed, though he didnât even notice until he accidentally stained the page while turning it. He hurriedly set the book aside, feeling guilty for damaging it.
To make matters worse, someone appeared by his side.
"Sorry, I didnât mean to disturb you, you were so engrossed in your reading, but I need to close now. Itâs midnight," the librarian informed him, looking every bit like the most stereotypical library worker.
Spencer looked at him pleadingly, not even knowing what he was hoping for. That the librarian would let him stay until morning? In silence, he put on his coat and headed for the libraryâs exit. It wasnât a standalone building. Upon stepping out, he found himself in what looked like a hallway, with stairs leading, as far as he knew, to the laundry room, and wide-open doors to another room.
He was about to head for the actual exit when something caught his attention. A sign, like the ones warning about slippery floors. However, instead of a typical message, it had an inscription written in a handwriting resembling that of a child, with a flower replacing the dot on the letter "i."
If you feel like you canât handle it, come in. Weâll talk, or not, if you donât want to. But know that youâre not alone :)
He stared at the message motionless. It sounded a bit like some social campaign he would have ignored in 80% of cases. Yet, something about the simplicity of the message kept his gaze fixed.
Letâs be honest, Spencer was fucking terrified of going back to his apartment. And probably because of that, he decided to walk through those doors.
"As if I didn't have enough cleaning to do every fucking day," you muttered under your breath, moving yet another chair so you could mop the floor with the poorly wrung-out mop. A puddle formed on the old brown panels. â Iâll be a twenty-five-year-old with the spine of a life-worn retiree. Amazingâ
Even though you had been complaining for over twenty minutes, deep down you were pleased with how things had turned out. You could use this room from midnight until six in the morning and even got your own set of keys. For free. Well, not entirely. In exchange, you had to clean at the end of each day. It hosted meetings for Alcoholics Anonymous and other support groups. And anonymous chip-aholics, you thought, noticing crushed crumbs under one of the chairs.
Your earnings as a bartender and occasional office cleaner didnât allow you to rent any space for your... letâs call it a project. However, you believed youâd rather strain your back a little and perhaps save someoneâs life than spend these already sleepless nights watching shows or partying.
You couldnât quite remember how you came up with the idea. It probably happened while reading some sprawling discussion thread on a random forum online. Reading how people argue over the best cheesecake recipe on some website was one of your favorite late-night activities (donât be fooled by the trivial topicâthe discussion included a serious threat of arson and ended at a police station). Anyway, one night, while you were browsing a forum for parents of teenagers out of boredom, you came across advice from a woman who claimed that her communication problems with her daughter ended when she started talking to her late at night, rather than in the afternoon when she got home from school.
The thought wouldnât leave you alone. You looked into it and found that, while most support groups met in the evening, it was usually early evening. Well, that made senseâfew people could dedicate their whole night to it. But you could. Youâd been struggling with insomnia since college, ever since your mother passed away. After finishing your evening bar shift at eleven, youâd rush to this place, put up your homemade sign on the door, and wait. Youâd catch up on sleep in the mornings. And then, repeat.
Was it exhausting? A little. Had your social life nearly vanished, with the only people you saw being your equally nocturnal roommate and the neighborâs kid you took to daycare in the morning for a few extra dollars? Absolutely. Did it bring you satisfaction? Only one person had shown up since you started, but yes, it brought you immense satisfaction.
It might sound a bit overdramatic, but helping others was your calling.
You continued cleaning, muttering a few more curses under your breath. One earbud dangled from your ear; listening to music went against your personal code. You knew that if some desperate person rushed in after reading the sign on the door, the sight of youâthe person offering them a conversationâwith earbuds in might be a bit discouraging. They might think better of bothering you and back out, and you wouldnât even notice, absorbed in the music. But you couldnât help itâyou hated silence.
So, you bent your own rules, using only one earbud.
You swung the mop in a wide arc, in perfect sync with the rhythm of the song, and couldnât resist doing a spin. Cleaning and dancingâwas there a better combination?
When you turned around, you only then noticed that someone had been watching you the entire time. Which meant theyâd heard every curse word that had come out of your mouth over the past twenty minutes. And there had been... a lot. You pulled the earbud from your ear, like a teenager caught watching something they shouldnât.
Congratulations, you idiot. Whateverâs bothering him, heâll definitely want to talk about it with someone like you...
âHi!" you said, in the friendliest tone you could manage. You had to somehow get rid of all those curse words from your mouth. The man didnât respond, but you noticed his chest move, as if he was taking a deep breath. Unfortunately for him, every time the other person stayed silent, you started babbling nonsense. "Sit down if you want, and donât worry about the wet floor. I mean, maybe worry, if you care about your teeth. I slipped here yesterday too, but luckily on my backâŚI canât afford a dentist visit, do you know how much they charge now?"
"Iâve read... Iâve read the note on the door," the man said shyly, pointing his thumb behind him. Only then did you take a closer look at him. A black coat with a piece of a black shirt peeking out, matching trousers, and elegant shoes...You straightened up, still holding the mop, realizing he must be coming back from a funeral. "Can I really stay here for a moment? If so, for how long?"
The desperation in his voice tightened your chest.
"Yes, of course," you said gently, much less chaotic than before. "You can stay as long as you need."
You held back the playful remark, At least until six in the morning, because after that Iâm not welcome here anymore. Humor could ease tension in tough situations, but it wasnât always appropriate, as you had learned many times. This man didnât look like heâd be helped by your silly jokesâŚ
He looked, above all, lost. He must have felt that way, since his feet had led him to this place. Despite your earlier words, he didnât move, seeming unsure of how to act.
"IâŚI don't have to talk to you, right? Thatâs what the note saysâŚ"
His stuttering didnât seem like the result of shyness. You got the impression that his lips were refusing to cooperate, too tired to express what his still sharp mind wanted to convey.
"If you donât want to, Iâm not going to force you. But sometimes, you know, itâs better to say whatâs on your mind."
It seemed like he only heard the first sentence. Completely ignoring the second, he took a seat in one of the chairs in the last row. They were arranged like pews in a church, one behind the other. Surprising, considering it was a space for support group meetings. Usually, in such places, the chairs were set up in a circleâyou knew that from experience.
For a moment, you kept staring at him, fighting the urge to speak again. His appearance moved you deeplyâactually, the suffering of every living person touched you. And he was definitely suffering, moving stiffly as if in constant pain, with a vacant expression on his face. But since he had decided he needed silence, you couldnât impose yourself on him. It could have the opposite effect, driving him away rather than encouraging him to open up.
You had no choice but to return to cleaning.
Moving around the room, you tried to take steps as light as a ghost. You tucked the earbuds into your pocket. You gathered all the lost trash and items, finishing mopping the floor. From time to time, your gaze would instinctively drift toward the man. Staring wasnât in good taste, but you couldnât help it. He looked... intriguing?
He was definitely young, around your age or maybe a little older, but still very, very young. His skin was unnaturally pale, contrasting sharply with his black clothes. Brown hair, short but longer than most of your male friends', a bit unruly. His eyes... so much was happening in them. While the rest of him seemed cold and unmoving, those eyes were a window to all the pain inside him.
You looked into his eyes just once and knew he wouldnât say anything more to you. Youâd spend a few hours in silenceâ you would finish your work and take a seat in the first row, far enough so you couldnât hear each otherâs breathing, but in a position where he could see your back, remember your presence, in case he decided to speak. But that wonât happen, you thought, and you were right.
At five in the morning, the mysterious, troubled man left the room.
You stared at the door, overwhelmed by your own thoughts. Maybe you had made a mistake by respecting his request? Maybe you should have sat right next to him, taken his hands, and begged him to tell you everything? You had no idea if those few hours of silence had soothed him, or if it had been the opposite. You were afraid he might have dangerous plans for himself, but that realization came too late. You couldnât run out after him into the street; you wouldnât find him in the cold, December night.
All you could do was sigh, certain that youâd never see him again.
Seeing him in the doorway the next night, you thought you had fallen asleep and that it was just a dream.Â
But you never slept at this time.Â
Spencer couldnât reasonably explain why he went back there the following night.
Or why he was heading there for the third time.
He also didnât know why he was so surprised that Hotch had given them a few days off. After all, he had long since learned that behind his cold exterior lay a genuinely caring and understanding nature.
Maybe he was simply hoping for the quickest possible return to work, something that would occupy his mind. Heâd even be willing to stay late at the office, analyzing some old, unsolved cases, and only head home in the late hours, when heâd be longing to collapse into bed.
Heâd be so exhausted that he wouldnât even think about the Dilaudid hidden in the safe. He still hadnât gotten rid of it, for a deeply humiliating reason. He feared that if he so much as tried to open the safe, he wouldnât be able to stop himself. In the evenings, he was gripped by an anxiety so intense that his breathing would grow shallow to the point of causing severe dizziness. He couldnât sleep either. An irrational fear haunted himâthe fear that he might simply stop breathing in his sleep. That heâd never wake up again. In a few days, maybe a week, one of his friends, letâs say Derek, would decide to check why he wasnât showing up to work. Derek would find him still lying in bed, his skin gray and cold, his limbs stiff.
His merciless mind seemed to be conjuring these images on purpose. Imagining Morgan over his lifeless body would send him back to Emilyâs funeral, making him feel that same painful tightness in his chest.
These werenât even flashbacks. He was almost certain he was sending himself back to that moment at the cemetery deliberately, purposefully crafting these visions. He wanted to amplify his suffering, to make a possible relapse feel more justified. It felt as though he was faking his tragic state, which made him dismiss any thought of asking anyone for help. Why would he, if he didnât deserve it?
Besides, he didnât want to intrude on anyone elseâs grief. JJ couldnât afford to break down; she had to stay strong for her family, for little Henry. Derek had nearly lost Emily in his arms, bearing an unbearable guilt and painâit would be cruel to burden him with more. And Hotch was still reeling from his own tragedy; Hailey had died not so long ago, and Prentissâs death could easily reopen those old wounds. They were the ones who truly deserved these few days off. Their struggles were real; he was just an addictâa boy supposedly intelligent.
Supposedly, because if he really were, would he keep something capable of destroying him in a safe by his bed, within reach at any moment.
Because of these thoughts, he feared the night more than anything. Thatâs when he became weak, vulnerable to the voice of his addiction. So, spending his nights away from home felt like the only solution.
Heâd already developed a sort of routine. First, heâd head to the library, usually packed with students preparing for exams. As the hours wore on, they would disappear one by one, until by closing time, he was left alone with just the one librarian in square glasses.
Heâd wander out to the hallway, glancing into the next room with the same curiosity heâd felt the first time. He wondered if that girl was still there. It seemed almost unbelievable that anyone would willingly spend entire nights sitting in silence with a gloomy stranger. Didnât she have work to get up for? Or classes. She looked like a studentâthe kind whoâd doze off in the front row without a shred of humility, doodle strange symbols in the margins, and engage professors in conversations on topics wildly unrelated to the lecture. And, somehow, they actually responded to her.
He stepped through the door, certain heâd find her there, yetâŚthe room was empty. A chill ran through him at the thought that maybe heâd finally lost his mind and had only imagined her. In men, the first symptoms of schizophrenia usually appeared a bit earlier, but as everyone knew, every rule had its exceptionsâŚ
Something crashed forcefully into his back.
âDamn, sorry!â said the girl, her face obscured by the enormous box she was carrying.
She leaned it against her hip so she could see who she had just bumped into. Spencer was surprised to realize that he had been waiting for what she might say. The day before, when she saw him, she had said, "Oh, Mr. Mysterious. Good to see you, I was starting to think I made you up..." That had been their only interaction that night, and he wondered if she was going to greet him with a similar line.
But she simply smiled, adjusted the box in her arms, and walked past him. Did he really feel⌠disappointed?
He quickly shook his head. After all, he had asked her from the very beginning if they could not talk. He spent so much time there because it was the calmest place he could imagine, not because he was looking for new friends. He didnât need them. New friends quickly turned into real friends, then old friends, and eventually, they only left wounds. He sat in the same spot as the previous and the one before that night. During those, he barely moved, spending those hours solely on thinkingâabout matters both important and trivial. This time, he brought something to occupy himself, specifically a pocket edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Even though he knew the book by heart and could recite any page from memory, he still found comfort in the story. Besides, this particular edition had been a birthday gift from Emily. He opened to the first page, but then his eyes fell on the inscription she had written by hand⌠As he began to read it, the words of her dedication blurred with the words spoken at her funeral. His head was filled with a ringing, and he immediately closed the book and placed it back in his pocket.
So, he was left with the escape into the depths of his own mind. He knew that most people wouldnât be able to spend so many hours just thinking, but for him, it had never been a problem. He wasnât sure whether it was a matter of his nature or simply a matter of habit, a skill he had mastered during his lonely teenage years.
Then, he glanced briefly at the girl still there. It occurred to him for the first time, what on earth she needed that huge box for. He found her standing on tiptoe on a chair, trying to reach the corkboard hanging on the wall. Attached to it were reminders about the benefits of belonging to a support group, etc., so people who got bored during meetings could constantly remind themselves why they were actually sitting there. The girl was trying to frame the board by pinning⌠Christmas lights to its edges?
Given her short stature, it was quite a challenge. Sensing that her fall was only a matter of time, he stood up from his seat. He didnât even particularly wonder why she was hanging Christmas decorations in November.
âIâll help,â he offered.
She looked at him, first a little surprised, then almost with relief.
âIâd like to, as any altruist would, refuse your help and say that you donât have toâŚbut for Godâs sake, please, just do it,â she said, immediately jumping off the chair and onto the floor. âI think Iâve already told you that I canât afford a dentist, so Iâd rather not take the risk.
âYou mentioned it,â Reid replied, not sure what else he could add. He stopped trying to come up with any elaborate responses. Once again, he reminded himself that he hadnât come here to make new acquaintances; he didnât need to present himself in the best possible light. He could afford a little blissful silence and grumpiness.
She watched his actions with her arms crossed. He reached the spot where she wanted to attach the lights without much trouble.
âI know itâs not very hygienic,â she muttered, cutting a piece of tape with her teeth. âBut I donât have scissors, and as they say, you have to make do somehow.â She handed him a transparent piece, which, though almost invisible from a distance, was meant to keep the lights from falling. He accepted it without a word.
âThe owner requested that I decorate this place for Christmas,â she continued. âHe mentioned something about how the atmosphere positively affects most people, so itâs best to start as early as possible. But for me, itâs a bit too soon. What do you think?â
Absorbed in the task, he hadnât heard her question. She didnât seem bothered by it. Leaning against the wall with one arm, she clapped her hands when he finished.
âThanks a lot, stranger. Now that Iâve used you once, maybe we should finally introduce ourselves?â
Spencer prolonged the process of getting off the chair as much as he could. For some reason, he didnât really want to reveal his name. In a way, he liked that, entering this room, he was just a shell without characteristics, data, or past experiences.
âWe donât have to, if you donât want to,â she added, noticing his hesitation. âActually, names donât really matter. I can always just call you a stranger. You could suggest some adjectives. Think it over carefully; itâs an opportunity to be, for example, a handsome strangerâŚâ
He couldnât help himself and chuckled. The girlâs eyebrows raised slightly, as if she had just witnessed a miracle.
âSpencer,â he revealed, extending his hand.
She shook it, offering her own name in return. Her nails were of varying lengths, especially those on her thumbs, which didnât even extend past the tip of her finger, as if she only bit those particular ones.
âWell, considering weâve theoretically known each other for three days, it sounds a bit funny, but nice to meet you, Spencer. Thanks again for the help. So, letâs see if it works.â
He had planned to return immediately to his seat, but the girl spoke so quickly that he didnât have time to pull back. Instead, he found himself standing in front of her, watching as she switched on the Christmas lights, her face showing the intensity of an inventor presenting their latest creation.
âNo way,â she muttered when the lights didnât turn on.
âProbably the batteries,â he replied.
She looked at him as if he had just said something groundbreaking.
âYou know what kind weâll need?â
âAA, the thin ones.â
âAlright, then letâs go,â she decided, moving forward with determination.
âWhat? Where to?â
For a moment, he wasnât sure if she was talking to him or just referring to herself in the plural. It was... unexpected.
âTo the store, across the street. I need to decorate this place if I want the owner to keep letting me do what Iâm doing here. Since youâre a battery expert, you can tell me which ones to pick.â
âAA, the thinnest ones. Iâm not an expert, itâs common knowledge. Havenât you ever changed batteries on a remote?â
He hesitated a bit about leaving the room with her. However, she had already put on her jacket, a brown leather one, at least two sizes too big. Underneath, she wore a green, lace blouse with an asymmetrical cut and flared sleeves, giving it a slightly fairy-like style.
âI guess not, I donât know. My mom was against television, and we watched it so rarely that we never had to change batteries. Or maybe she changed them herself, I donât know. Doesnât matter. I just want company so letâs go.
If she had phrased it as a suggestion, he would probably have replied that heâd prefer to stay inside alone, if that were possible. However, she used a command, delivered so quickly that his brain didnât even have time to process what was happening before his body moved forward.
After a moment, they crossed the street, heading toward a small, 24-hour shop on the corner. Spencer figured he might have dropped by there once before or after a visit to the library; after all, it wasnât an entirely unfamiliar neighborhood.
Almost immediately after stepping inside, they came face-to-face with the guy behind the counter, who looked like he was counting down the hours until closing, the way prisoners count down the years left on their sentences.
âWhat do we need, expert?â the girl muttered to him, as if they were about to buy a part for constructing a rocket launcher, not just a couple of ordinary batteries.
Spencer asked for batteries and, after a momentâs thought, a coffee, tooâthe kind served in those ridiculously inconvenient cups without any sleeves, making it easy to spill and burning hot to hold. The girl glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, so he added, asking for one for her as well.
As they waited for their order, an incredibly awkward silence settled over them. It was odd, considering theyâd spent the last two nights practically without exchanging a word. She stood with her elbow casually resting on the counter, while he kept his hands in the pockets of his brown coat. The harsh, almost clinical lighting inside revealed details about her appearance that Spencer hadnât noticed before. For instance, her light-blonde bangs fell in a heart shape on her forehead, her eyebrows were slightly asymmetrical, and her eyes were the coldest shade of blue heâd ever seen. Or maybe it was the effect of the black eyeliner on her waterline?
Noticing his stare, she tilted her head in question, assuming he had something to ask. Caught off guard, he mirrored her gesture without knowing why. They were spared further awkwardness by the arrival of two coffees on the counter in those unfortunate cups.
âThanks for paying,â she said as they stepped back outside. As the door closed behind them, he felt like muttering no problem but she beat him to it. âI was counting on it. I donât have any money on me. Thatâs my way of savingâjust never carrying cash.
A comment about how it wasnât the wisest method came to his lipsâafter all, accidents happened, and sometimes having a bit of cash on hand could actually save oneâs life. He was surprised, though, by his own concern and sense of responsibility toward a stranger.
As they left, she locked the door, then handed him her coffee to hold so she could unlock it again to let them back in.
âIf it turned out you didnât have a cent in that fancy coat of yours, I wouldâve just stolen it,â she admitted in the same casual tone one might use to comment on the weather. Her bluntness startled him every time. âI even considered it, but then you pulled out your wallet. Hey, youâre not a cop or something, are you?â she asked suddenly, raising an eyebrow suspiciously.
âI am,â he replied automatically. Damn, he shouldnât have said that. Heâd already given her his name, and now his profession. At this rate, his anonymity would burst like a soap bubble.
From her expression, he could tell she took it as a joke.
âOh no. Are you going to arrest me now?â
He shrugged.
âIf I did, I wouldnât have anywhere to go.â
Saying this, he felt a twinge of inner humiliation. His slightly improved mood sank back to square one, as he was reminded that he wasnât on a casual outing with a friendâhe was on a forced exile from his own apartment.
She pushed open the door and stepped through first, walking backward, facing him as she went.
âIâll take that as a no. Although, on second thoughtâdo you have hot water in your place?â He nodded, answering her question, clueless about where she was headed. Her comments were too unpredictable. She clapped her hands together. âThatâs great! They cut ours off in the building two days ago for some maintenance work, and honestly, Iâve missed nothing more than a hot shower. So, officer, maybe you should reconsider that arrest?â
She literally pushed her wrists right under his nose. For a moment, he regretted not having handcuffs with him. He imagined the shock and amusement on her face if he actually snapped them around her wrists. He shook his head, not understanding why he was picturing thatâor why, suddenly, he felt so amused. Well, at least it was a relief compared to how he had felt an hour ago.
âWell, I donât know the procedure for a cop taking an arrested person to his own home,â he replied.
âIâve heard they do that with the worst criminals,â she said.
âLike battery thieves?â
âEvery serial killer starts somewhere.â
âI donât know of a single case where it started with stealing batteries.â
âWell, maybe you donât know enough about criminology?â she asked, spreading her hands.
Spencer fell silent for a moment, then simply started laughing. Not mockingly, but genuinely, like he hadnât in... a long, long time. After a moment, the girl joined him, though she couldnât have known the true reason for his reaction. After a moment, the girl joined him, though she couldnât know the true reason for his reaction. She tried to take the coffee from him, still holding it for her. As he was still overcome by some boyish chuckle, he flinched and accidentally brushed her pale hand. The girl didnât even seem to notice the fleeting contact, grabbed the cup, and took a small sip of the still-hot drink. His fingers twitched, curling and stretching. He had never been a fan of physical contact, accepting it only from those closest to him. Whenever he tried to touch someone, he had an overwhelming feeling that it bothered them. Spencer considered it an incredible paradox that he worked by conducting in-depth psychological analyses of individuals, yet in his personal life, he struggled so much with understanding others' feelings.
Standing in the same spot, he watched as she approached the Christmas lights.
âWell, come on, techie. Time to change the batteries.â
She pulled him out of his thoughts. He joined her by the corkboard, this time offering her his coffee. It took him less than a minute, but when the lights blinked on, she patted him on the shoulder with such admiration, as if he had spent an entire day working on it.
It was a purely joking gesture, but somehow it still reminded him of all those pats on the back at the funeralâthe last time anyone had touched him. He was really starting to hate his brain for dragging up memories like that every damn time he began to feel even a little bit better.
The girl must have noticed the slight withdrawal on his face after she touched him. He could almost see the invisible notebook in her mind, where the words never touch him again, he doesnât want it seemed to appear. He suddenly wanted to open his mouth and explain that it had nothing to do with her, but he knew it would come out sounding pathetic.
Thatâs why he just sighed, like a beaten dog, wondering if taking Dilaudid that day would have allowed him to talk to herâand anyone elseâwith far more ease, without the heavy burden on his shoulders and the eternal tornado of painful memories storming through the depths of his mind.
âSoâŚâ the girl began after a longer pause. Her voice sounded different for a moment, stripped of its playful and cheerful tone, and Spencer almost felt as if she forced herself to bring it back. âThanks again for your help and for unwittingly stopping me from committing theft. Oh, and for the coffee, though itâs one of the worst Iâve had in the past ten years of my life. Which is about as long as Iâve been drinking coffee at all. Anyway, if youâve grown tired of my chatter, your lucky moment has arrived, because I need to get back to hanging the rest of the holiday decorations, cleaning the floorsâŚâ
"I can help you with all that," said Spencerâs lipsâcertainly not him, at least not so quickly or so confidently. That didnât mean he disagreed, though.
She bit her lip, gently shaking her head.
âNo⌠I donât want you to feel obligated, like you have to help me with something. Or like you need to repay me for hanging out here. Since⌠letâs say I started this place, Iâve been managing everything on my own. This room is pretty small, thereâs really not that much to clean. So just relax. Enjoy your bookâI noticed you brought one.â She nodded toward his coat pocket, where it indeed rested. âYeah, I stared at you for a second. Subtly, of course, so you wouldnât notice. But donât worry, you werenât, like, picking your nose or anything. Not that I assumed you would. I mean, you donât seem like the type.â
âThankâŚyou?â
One thing about Spencerâhe often heard that he talked too much. That was just his nature. When a broad topic genuinely fascinated him, he couldnât help diving into even the tiniest details. It always left him feeling a bit ashamed, worried that whoever he was talking to wasnât remotely interested and was only rolling their eyes internally. For the first time in a long while, heâd met someone who made him seem like the quiet one, maybe even a bit grumpy.
The thought surprised him, but he regretted not meeting her at a different point in his life. Just a few stupid weeks ago, when Emily was still alive, and he wasnât constantly battling the urge to soothe himself with Dilaudid. Maybe then he could have mustered more energy, started a truly engaging conversation. But now his throat was bone dry. He realized he was stuck in the belief that a part of himâthe part everyone seemed to like the mostâwas gone, and the only way to get it back was locked in the safe by his bed.
His ears started ringing, and his own body felt like it no longer belonged to him. It was just an ordinary object with a delicate structure, cracking under the loud sound filling his ears.
The girl kept staring at him. God, he must have looked pathetic in her eyes. Was she talking to him because she wanted to, or because he came here every night and she had no other choice? He could have sworn he saw some disgust in her eyes. For the first time, he noticed that when they stood side by side in the store under such harsh lighting. It allowed her to examine him closely, and she noticed the bags under his eyes and the tired grayness of his skin. Furthermore, he spoke so littleâshe must have despised him.
He felt the urge to simply run out of the room, head straight back to his apartment, ignore the old neighbor on the stairs, and with trembling hands, open the safe... then it would all be over, the pain and the tension...
âSpencer?â A sound pierced the heavy dome surrounding him. His name. It was the first time she had used it, instead of some mocking label like stranger, officer, or techie âSpencer, is everything okay?â
He sank heavily into one of the chairs. It was the only way to stop himself from leaving. Not enough, he felt. Something kept urging him to stand up and go to his apartment. The apartment, the safe...
"Could you... could you say something to me?" he asked pitifully, in the voice of a beggar pleading for a piece of bread.
He had to distract himself somehow, get rid of these thoughts.
"Say something to you?" she repeated, confused.
"Anything, please. About inheritance and gene mutation, why you even come here every night, it doesnât matter, just talk to meâŚ"
"Okay," she said, a little feverishly, sitting down right next to him. He avoided her gaze, but briefly noticed she was looking at him with concern in her cold, blue eyes. "Okay... okay... so I'll tell you I have no clue about inheritance and genes, sorry...what was the other topic to choose? Why do I come here?"
He didnât answer, not even realizing she had asked a question. Trembling, he listened only to her voice and her words, paying much less attention to the tone. He forced himself to listen. Youâre not leaving this room, at least not until she finishes speaking. Listen. She has a nice voice, doesn't she?
"Spencer, youâve gotten very, very pale."
"Itâs okay, just talk to me. I need... to forget about something."
The girl suddenly nodded, with more readiness and understanding.
"Alright... Why do I come here? My friends, the ones who even know about this, slash one roommate and a guy from the bar, I'm not going to pretend I have a lot of friends...Anyway, they asked about it, and I told each of them a little bit of something different, but with the same general meaning. I didnât go into details, I didnât go into details, but Iâll tell you now, not just because you look like a dying man and I feel a bit like Iâm fulfilling your last request before you drop dead on the floor. By the way, I wonder what Iâd tell the police if that happened. Would you stand up for your old good friend, officer?"
His hands clenched around his knees, his head hung low, and for a long time, he had been hearing the beating of his own heart. His smile in response to the question was crooked and tired, but that didnât change the fact that it was still a smile.
"How, when I'd be dead?"
"Oh, you like to nitpick words?"
"I just like logic. Usually."
"If I wanted to finish you off, I'd start telling you about my roommate's love life. That one's completely devoid of logic. Youâd die listening to that.â
âSo maybe another time? Besides, as much as I'd prefer not to die in an AA meeting room, I'd rather listen more about you."
"So listen. And breathe, deeply. You can take my hand if you want, or if it helps. Donât you think I sound like I'm giving advice to a woman in labor? Breathe, hold my hand..."
Spencer exhaled again, followed by a burst of laughter. Her train of thought was simply exceptional, and he was genuinely curious about what would come out of her mouth next. He was beginning to forget about the Dilaudid hidden in the safe by his bedâŚ
"Oh God, I forgot again what I was talking about, Iâll never finish telling thisâŚ" The girl groaned, pressing her hand to her forehead. "Ah, college. No, wait, something about friends. I know, why I started this place! Alright, so it all probably started in college. The need to help, not the idea. I came up with that through an internet forum and arguments about cheesecake. Anyway, at my college, we created this really small organization. It's hard to even call it that, it was just... at that time, we were all moved by a girl I shared a room with who had attempted suicide. After everything, she dropped out of college... nearly cut contact with us, and we felt the need to do something, to help someone. Young, ambitious psychology students, you know? I think it was even my idea. I was sober for the first time since the academic year began, longer than two days, and immediately started having flashes of brilliance. It was about this: late at night, when most people were contemplating suicide, we swarmed all the nearby bridges. "It sounds heroic, I know. But in reality, we intervened only two, maybe three times. I was really surprised by that, I thought it was one of the most popular methods."
"In the United States, the most common method is hanging. It accounts for 25 to 30% of cases. After that, thereâs..." He felt the need to swallow. "Overdose. Especially among the young. Falls from heights or deliberate drownings are less common, but still present in the statistics."
"I'm a little concerned about your knowledge on this subject."
"I read a bit."
"Maybe I shouldnât be saying this, as someone whose favorite book is Girl, Interrupted, but maybe itâs time for some... less... devastating reading?"
"Maybe I'll think about it. Anyway, whatâs next with your... project?"
The girl rested her chin on the back of her chair, recalling where she had left off. Spencer finally straightened up, and as he became more engaged in the story she was telling, his hands stopped shaking as much.
"Well, as students go, we kind of lost our drive. They left one by one. The only thing I can say in their defense is that it was a damn cold winter, and you could have gotten hypothermia just from standing on that bridge at that hour. But I... somehow got more involved in it. My mom... passed away barely a month after I started college, completely unexpectedly. You know... or maybe you don't, I don't know what the beginning of a semester looks like in college. More parties than studying. My body had a full Mendeleevâs table inside at that time. Those nights spent on the bridges were the first sober and fully conscious ones in a long time. I liked standing there, thinking. To the drivers passing by, I might have looked like I wanted to jump myself, but I never considered it... not in that particular way. I had been dealing with insomnia for a long time, so I could come there very late. And one time... I really managed to save a man. I noticed him, and we talked for almost an hour. My heart nearly jumped out of my chest, but... after that time, he actually stepped down from the railing, hugged me, and walked away. I donât remember what I said to him. Iâm not even sure if it actually happened, maybe I made it all up?
She took a deep breath to calm herself. Spencer stared into her lost gaze, devoid of the false positivity that usually covered it. He wanted to... he couldnât quite determine if he wanted to hug her. He wanted to do something, but he wanted it to be more than just a hollow gesture. Still, he flinched, holding himself back from wrapping his arm around her.
"I'm sure it really happened," he said, his voice quieter and hoarse. The girl was surprised by the certainty in his tone. "And that's because... maybe you don't realize it, but you're doing exactly the same thing now as you did on that bridge, just in a different place and with a different guy."
He saw her slowly blink, the weight of his words settling in. One of the most talkative women he had ever met was suddenly rendered speechless. They stared at each other in silence for a long time, her lips parting and closing a few times. He felt a strange tension, as if whatever she was about to say would determine something significant in his life.
"Is that... why you come here every night?" she asked finally. "To avoid standing on the bridge?"
Spencer hated metaphors, couldnât stand when others used them, and struggled to create them himself. So he knew he had reached a truly strange point in his life when he found himself using one.
"I stand on it all the time, every moment."
Her fingers moved restlessly, her face momentarily expressionless. Then, she simply reached for his hand, the one farther from her.
"Nighttime is the hardest, isn't it?"
"Yes," he admitted. He kept the next sentence in his mouth for a long time, chewing on it repeatedly, questioning whether it tasted right and whether he should say it. He felt... that this request might be too much. Yet, at the same time, he was painfully desperate. For the first time, truly motivated to do it. He hesitated, licking his lips, and the girl followed the movement of his tongue, as if wondering what he was about to say. He finally decided to just say it. "I have something at home that I'm afraid I'll take. I know that when I try to get rid of it, I wonât be able to stop myself. I know I probably shouldnât ask you this, but I canât do it on my own... I donât have anyone else who could do this for me..."
She looked at him with a cold seriousness.
"Are you trying to lure me to your apartment?"
"No!" he assured hastily, realizing it really did sound that way. He quickly shook his head. "You're right, you shouldnât go to a strangerâs house, and I shouldnât even ask you. We barely know each other..."
"I was joking," she interrupted, reaching for her jacket. "I want to help you, I really do."
"No, Iâve thought about it, and I think I can handle it on my own..."
"After what you just told me? Forget it. Iâm not taking the risk that something might happen to you."
"But..."
Determination sparkled in her eyes.
"How far do you live from here?"
You were doing something incredibly stupid.
You were going to the apartment of a man you had met three days ago and knew nothing about except his name.
You were practically risking your life. You could have ended up subjected to excruciating tortures beyond anything you could imagine, then murdered and desecrated.
This was how Spencer lectured you the entire way, trying to convince you not to follow him, but it was already too late. You had made up your mind and tried not to think about the potential danger. It was incredibly difficult, thanks to the vividly detailed stories he kept sharing.
During the twenty-minute subway ride, he managed to summarize the biographies of six serial killers who targeted women just like you. He even called you someone in the highest risk group for assault and violence, to which you sarcastically muttered thank you and clamped a hand over his mouthâmainly because the woman sitting next to you looked like she was dialing emergency services.
âYou know an unsettling amount about that topic too,â you remarked as the two of you covered the last stretch of the walk on foot. âYou know, murderers and crimes.â
Of course, you had locked up your space, even though youâd never left it before sunrise. Night after night, you had stubbornly stayed until morning, even though, apart from Spencer, only one other person had ever shown up, and youâd spent most of the time bored out of your mind. Yet, you didnât feel guilty about abandoning your post. After all, your intention from the start had been to help people in crisisâthose who couldnât or wouldnât seek professional help, who needed more of a friendly, honest chat over a beer but without the beer.
Since the moment that man had first walked through your door, he had occupied your thoughts more than you wanted to admit. You had been incredibly afraid heâd spend every night silently sitting with you and then suddenly stop coming, leaving you with guilt and endless questions. Instead, he had opened up almost by accident.
Even though you knew far less about him than you wanted to, you felt a strange connection between the two of you. Mostly in the form of sleepless nights, the shared loss of someone dear (you guessed this from his attire during that first night), and likely a history with various substances.
Many people would look at him and refuse to believe he could be an addict. Well, aside from the state he was in after several sleepless nights in a rowâexhausted eyes, a few days' worth of stubble, and a slouched postureâhe looked quite respectable. But you had encountered enough people struggling with addiction to know that appearances were no indicator. Judging based on looks in such matters was simply harmful.
âAs I mentioned, I read a bit,â he replied to your question.
You raised an eyebrow.
âOh yeah? What, The Silence of the Lambs as a bedtime story every night?â
He chuckled but didn't press the issue further as you both reached the building where he apparently lived. He stopped, signaling for you to do the same. Above you, a streetlamp cast the only light in the starless night. Spencer was wearing a brown coat that you really liked, and a light breeze ruffled his hair.
"Maybe you should text your roommate, let her know where you're headed?" he suggested. "You know, give her the address..."
"Oh my God, Spencer..."
"I just want you to feel comfortable," he said.
You sighed and grabbed your phone, wanting to ease his worry.
"It's just common sense to do this every time you're going somewhere with someone you don't know. Or when you're coming back alone. It's not just about women."
"Now I'm starting to think you're really a cop," you muttered.
You pulled up your friend and roommate Jude's number on your phone and began typing a message.
i'm going to some weird dude's place, here's his addy. if I'm not back by noon, just know my head's probably in his fridge xoxo
Jude worked nights cleaning office buildings. She must've been slacking off because she replied almost immediately:
you little slut.Â
After a moment she added:
donât let him tie you down
if worse comes to worse bite his dick off
not as hard as it sounds
âShe replied that Iâm being a bit irresponsible and I should be careful. Sheâll call me in an hour to make sure everythingâs fine.â
Spencer seemed satisfied with the response.
âSounds like a really good friend.â
âYeah, the best. Letâs go in.Â
As soon as you were at his apartment door, he noticeably tensed up. And when he turned on the light, you saw his skin pale again, just like earlier when you had been worried about his state. You didnât look around too much. The apartment was definitely nicer than the one you shared with Jude, but it had been kept in a style from a decade ago, which immediately impressed you since you werenât a fan of modern architecture.
âWhere is it?â you asked, referring to the mysterious thing you were supposed to take from him.
Uncertainly, he opened the door to the bedroom for you. If he really intended to kill you, it probably would have happened right then. You watched as he approached a cabinet near the double bed. He opened its doors, revealing a simple safe. He typed the code so quickly that even if you had wanted to, you wouldnât have been able to memorize it. You held your breath as he came over to you, handing you some plastic bag. You shoved it into your pocket without even looking at it.
You didnât want him to think for even a moment that you were judging him. Besides, the moment he handed it to you, that concern no longer mattered. He could finally breathe again in his own home.
âI havenât taken anything for a long time,â he confessed in a quiet voice. âActually, I thought I was completely clean. But something happened recently, and I couldnât stop thinking about it. I couldnât get rid of it.â
You stood in front of him, your head tilted up, the plastic bag weighing lightly in your jacket pocket, even though its contents were virtually weightless. The silence between you became intimate, and a smile of appreciation crept onto your lips.
âYouâre incredibly strong.â
âIâd be strong if I hadnât bought it.â
âSpencer, you kept it in that safe, what, for three days? You spent nights away from home so you wouldnât think about it? You asked me to come and take it so you wouldnât risk giving in. Think about it. So many people wouldâve broken down in your place.â
You could see that he didnât completely agree with you, but you didnât want to push him to change his mind. You were just sharing your opinion. For a moment, you both stayed silent, his head leaning in your direction so you could hear each other clearly despite the softly spoken words. It was as if you were sharing secrets so big that even the walls couldnât hear them.
"I hope that by taking this, you'll be able to sleep for a bit," you said, feeling a little like you were committing a sin by breaking the silence. Spencer stepped back to his usual distance.
You knew there was nothing left for you here, but somehow you couldnât bring yourself to leave the room. You didnât have even the slightest excuse to stay, so you sighed and glanced meaningfully at the door. His expression was unreadable, his shoulders hanging loosely by his sides.
"Well, Iâm off. Iâll drop by the place for a few hours," you said. You were really about to walk out when you cursed in your mind and finally forced yourself to say what had been bothering you. "So... even though youâve gotten rid of it, do you still plan on coming by? I mean..."
You didnât know how to finish the sentence.
"Weâll see each other tomorrow," he assured you shortly, but firmly, which was enough for you.
You wanted to leave with a sense of mystery, but you couldnât stop the wide smile that spread across your face. Spencer opened his mouth, probably to say something about safety and walking alone in the city late at night. You gave him a quick, caring look and disappeared through the door.
Youâd been living a nocturnal life for years, aware of the dangers that the darkness held, but youâd also come to know the comforting feeling that it left behind in its embrace.
*
One might expect that after an entire afternoon at work and a sleepless night, you would collapse into bed exhausted by morning. But that never happened. Every day, you returned to your apartment in that dark green building with red fire escapes and spent two hours tackling your dreaded household choresâwashing dishes or doing laundry.
You hated mornings, though you didnât know why. Nights were loud and alive, and so were you during them. Mornings were quiet and seemed to trap you like wounded prey. They cornered you, gnawed at you, and forced you to confront... what exactly? Your own life? Your thoughts? Longing and emptiness?
One thing was certain: you wouldnât trade your lifestyle for anything in the world.
Around eight in the morning, you would take your neighbor's son to preschool. She was a single mother, just two years older than you, earning a decent income but, as a result, constantly busy. Sometimes she left the boy with you, rewarding you generously afterward.
That was also when Jude came back from her night shift, usually dropping into bed without even greeting you. By then, you would often shut your eyes for a few hours, tooâyou werenât a machine, after all, capable of functioning entirely without sleep.
And yet, you were always the first to wake up, spending an hour or two in bed with your laptop before your friend joined you, and the two of you would have breakfast. At two in the afternoon.
You spread homemade jam on your toast. Jude was obsessed with unprocessed food, and if she had the time, sheâd probably bake her own breadâfrom flour she milled herself from grain she grew. You could easily picture her in some tiny, bygone village, growing vegetables with a scarf tied around her headâa funny image, considering she lived a thoroughly urban lifestyle and spent every weekend in a club.
âSo?â she asked, walking into your small kitchen after her shower, wearing a black satin robe that revealed glimpses of her freshly pampered brown skin. Even the lack of hot water in the entire building didnât stop her from sticking to her twenty-step skincare routine. She raised her eyebrows suggestively. âHow was the night? Did you have to use your mouth?â
âIf youâre referring to that advice you gave me yesterdayâno, I didnât have to.â
âProbably used it in another way,â she said with a smirk.
âSometimes youâre as gross as teenage boys in high school.â
âSorry,â she said, waving it off while making herself some coffee. âIâm just happy for you. Lately, you never go out, never see anyone. You spend your nights acting as a free therapist in an empty room, and when youâre not at work, youâre glued to your laptop. Itâs not healthy, babe. Sometimes youâve gotta have fun and blow off some steam. So, whoâs the guy? You said heâs kind of a weirdo.â
âHe kind of is,â you admitted. âBut in a sweet way. We didnât fucked by the way.â
Jude turned to you, looking utterly crushed.
âThen what the hell did you do? Play chess?â
âYou immediately assumed it was a quick hookup. This is a guy I met while acting like a free therapist in an empty room,â you quoted her own words back at her, slightly sarcastic.
She was silent for a moment, arms crossed, staring at you. âHot?â
âWhat does that have to do with anythingââ
âWell, he must be, considering how quickly you agreed to go to his place. You know what, girl? Need any help with your âbusinessâ?â
You snorted with laughter, swallowing the last bite of your toast.
âWhoreâ
âSingle young woman, I preferâÂ
You werenât very talkative, your mind constantly drifting back to the events of that night. You regretted not getting Spencerâs phone number. You needed to know what happened after you left and how he was holding up, to the point that you couldnât focus on anything else. You comforted yourself with the thought that youâd see him again that night. An intense need to learn more about him, to understand him, and a bit of concern for him lingered with you.
Jude was sipping her coffee when there was a knock at the door. You flinched, and she, stiff as a board, stopped you with a gesture of her hand.
âI have a bad feeling about thisâŚâ she muttered under her breath, nervously clutching her cup.
As if on cue, the light knock at the door turned into a loud pounding. âJude!â a male voice shouted. âJude, come on, letâs talk!â
Your friend hid her face in her hands as you sighed. Richard was her ex-boyfriend, and a complete psycho. They had broken up a year ago and had no contact since. Yet, every now and then, he would remember she existed and stalk her like some kind of obsessive. Then he would disappear again. You had almost gotten used to it, though you still insisted she should report it to the police. Jude, on the other hand, thought it wasnât worth the trouble since nothing would come of it anyway.
âPretend weâre not here,â she ordered.
You sighed again, looking at her gently. âI really think you should do something about it.â
âHeâll get bored in a week. We just have to wait. Maybe one day heâll break his neck on those damn stairs, and weâll be done with him.â
You couldnât help but snort, despite the seriousness of the situation. The steepness of the stairs in your building was truly terrifying. So much so that when you went out to the club, instead of heading home in the early hours, youâd crash at some mutual friendsâ place. Trying to climb those stairs drunk could end tragically.Â
Jude was right about one thing. Richard quickly lost interest, and after ten minutes the knocking stopped, but you didnât leave, afraid he might be lurking somewhere in the hall. You both left the apartment togetherâshe was heading to meet some friends, and you were off to work.
You liked the bar where you worked. The afternoon shift started quietly, mostly with a few guys stopping by on their way home from the office, chatting calmly and not causing any trouble. As night fell, the atmosphere picked up, becoming livelier. You always finished your shift just when the fun was starting to turn into chaos and arguments. As you left, you noticed the jealous looks from your coworkers, who, after months or even years, still watched some people with fear. Well, a drunk person is an unpredictable one.
You walked back to your rented room as if wings were carrying you. You were curious about what time Spencer would show up. You suspected he spent his evenings in the nearby library, which closed at midnight. You also hoped that besides him, others might show up as well.
Once inside, you started wondering if you should move the sign from the door to a more visible spot, so more people could learn about your initiative.
Spencer usually showed up right at midnight. Not waiting for him, you got to work on your usual chores. You were certain heâd appear in the doorway any moment, just like he always didâsilently, like a ghost. As you scrubbed the floors, you kept turning over your shoulder, always convinced youâd see him there. But every time, there was no one. You glanced at the clock and went back to work, because what else was there to do?
You really regretted not exchanging phone numbers.
Sure, you had taken his Dilaudid, but that didnât rule out the possibility that he might eventually crack and reach for it. That was the dark scenario that had formed in the pessimistic part of your brain, and it lingered there only for a moment. You remembered the determination and certainty in his eyes last nightâhe really didnât want to return to addiction. Most likely, something had just come up. After all, not everyone can afford to stay up so many nights in a row. Work, studies, responsibilities... You realized you didnât even know what he did for a living. There were so many questions.
Hours passed. You looked at the Christmas decorations youâd put up yesterday. Your mom had never liked Christmas, considering it an unnecessarily stressful time, but at your request, your home always drowned in lights and Santa hats. As an adult, you walked past such things in stores with your head down. Every association with your mom brought memoriesâpositive ones, true, but sometimes the greatest joys also brought pain.
You sighed, catching yourself in those thoughts. This was exactly why you hated silence. It always led you down a path of sadness. You considered putting in your headphones when someone appeared at the door.
You straightened up with hope, but it wasnât Spencer. Instead, it was a man in a burgundy sweater, glasses on his nose, and a touch of gray in his hair. You recognized him as the librarian, who sometimes left work when you were arriving. He greeted you in an extremely polite manner.
âIâve noticed that sign on your door for a while now, but I couldnât quite bring myself to come in. Do you work here?â
At first, you were disappointed it wasnât Spencer, but that feeling was quickly replaced by a smile. Someone had finally taken an interest in your notice.
âItâs not really a job. More of a personal project. I sit here and listen to whatâs weighing on peopleâs minds.â
The librarian turned out to be a kind, though very shy, man. You talked for a while; he made you laugh more than once, and the rest of the night didnât seem as depressing. He unexpectedly confided in you that his retired wife was battling cancer. He must have felt the urge to get it off his chest as soon as he entered, maybe even as soon as he saw the sign. He tried to maintain composure, but inside, he was terrified of losing her. His aging hands trembled as he spoke about it, and you listened with a heavy heart.
When you returned to the apartment, you couldnât bring yourself to do anything. You sat on the fire escape, your legs hanging into the dark space, until the sun rose. You heard the key turn in the lock and jumped to your feet, rushing to the door.
âJude, Jude, Jude!â you called to your roommate. She stepped back, her exhausted mind unable to handle such an enthusiastic greeting. Without waiting for her questions, you said, âYou need to find someone for me. Get their phone number, preferably. I donât care how, I know you have your ways.â
Your roommate wiped her eyes.
âWeâll talk after I get some sleep. And after you make me breakfast. Eggs, just how I like them.â
You agreed to the arrangement. Jude had incredible stalker skills. Once, she found an online profile of a guy just by knowing what kind of watch he wore. You didnât want to wait until the next night hoping Spencer would show up, so you decided to track him down yourself.
While Jude was sleeping, you wandered aimlessly around the apartment, eventually collapsing on the couch with the laptop on your stomach, reading through discussions on poaching forums. Why? God knows. You just couldnât sleep.
A kingâs breakfast appeared on the table: fried eggs on toast with avocado, freshly brewed coffee. Jude sighed at the sight.
âIf only my future boyfriend treated me like this.â
âDonât get used to it,â you warned, finishing off half an avocado raw. âIâm only doing this because I really need you to find someone for me.â
âDid you meet some handsome guy again?â
âItâs the same one.â
She laughed.
âYou slept together and now thereâs no trace of him? Sounds familiarâŚâ
âOh, just shut up with the toast. We didn't sleep with each other. How much longer youâre gonna eat that?Â
She rolled her eyes at your rushing and deliberately prolonged eating her breakfast, just to watch the vein on your forehead throb. When she finally finished, she pushed her plate aside and placed her laptop on the table instead. Cracking her knuckles like a piano virtuoso before a performance, she said:
âAlright, tell me everything about him. Every little detailânot just his name and address. Which metro line you took, what shoes he was wearing, what type of condoms he used, everything. Thatâs how Iâll find him.â
âCondoms?â You raised an eyebrow.
âExactly. Give me thirty minutes.â
You started losing faith in the success of this plan, but when you shared the information with herâthough not everything, to preserve at least some of his privacyâshe actually went silent for half an hour, fully focused on her laptop screen. You waited, tapping your nails on the table.
âHa! Got him!â she exclaimed, both amused and proud. âOh, crap⌠did you know the guyâs a doctor?â
"What?"
Surprised, you shifted in your seat. Not that it was entirely implausible⌠actually, the more you thought about it, it kind of fit him. But his career path was the least of your concerns at the momentâyou were looking for a way to get in touch and find out why he hadnât shown up last night despite his promise.
âDoctor Spencer Reid,â Jude read out. âSounds sexy. Were you two playing some kind of role-play game?â
âFor heavenâs sake, Jude, I told youâŚâ
Once again, you explained to her that you hadnât spent the night together, but she just cackled through your entire speech.
âFine. Whatever. You know what, youâre rightâwe had sex. BDSM, ropes, the whole deal. Iâll tell you all about itâŚâ
âOkay, on second thought, I donât want to hear this anymore.â
âSo plug your ears and give me his phone number if, by some miracle, you managed to find that too.â
*
The first case they got right after Emily's death involved murders that had taken place... in another state.
They were supposed to have one more day off, but it turned out to be a child abduction caseâsomething that simply couldnât wait. They were called in and had to go. Unless, of course, they wanted a life on their conscienceâŚ
Spencer remained silent throughout the entire flight on the jet. He barely slept at night; after the girl left, he stared at the door for a long time, then at the empty safe where his old, despicable colleague had just been. He felt that with the disappearance of the threat, his motivation to leave the apartment or do anything had faded. He no longer viewed the place with such intense disgust, but now considered it... incredibly lonely. When she left, a silence of an unparalleled intensity settled in, causing a sharp headache. He lay down in bed, fearing it might worsen.
The news about returning to work simply terrified him. He was unable to think, at least not as intensely as usual, and after all, that had always been his roleâthe brain of the team. Without the ability to focus, he was useless.
In child abduction cases, the first twenty-four hours are always the most critical. Pressured by time, he stared at the case files, analyzing all the information gathered so far, and he was losing it. Inside, he was simply losing it. In the past few days, he had started to accept that due to grief and the return of his addiction's voice, he might not be as effective as usual. As a pure realist, unwilling to lean toward either extreme, he finally came to the conclusion that this state would pass. It would pass... he just had to wait.
But he couldn't afford to wait. Someone's life depended on him. A child's life.
This is how he justified it to himself. This one time, he would give in, not to satisfy some fleeting, selfish need. The reason was far more complex, morally justified, even sacred. One could say he was sacrificing himself for the greater good of the case.
"Spence," a voice pulled him out of his thoughts. He turned to see JJ with a gentle smile on her face, though it lacked much joy. "I can see you're feeling better."
He hesitated before answering. His mind was a jumble of intertwining conclusions, assumptions, and calculations related to the case he was investigating. Having been torn from his own world, he didn't quite grasp what she had said.
"Sorry, what did you say?"
"I said that itâs clear youâre feeling better. You were really distant on the jet. I was worried."
He swallowed hard, overwhelmed by a wave of shame. If only she knew why he felt better...
Looking at her face, he felt the urge to cry, to fall to his knees and apologize to her. She shouldnât even be worrying about himâhe didnât deserve it.
"Spencer?â she asked, worried, as he once again failed to respond.
Panic began to rise within him, the same paranoia heâd felt when returning from Emilyâs funeral with Dilaudid in his pocket. Everyone knew what heâd done, theyâd seen it, could read it on his face. He was as transparent as water, unable to hide anything.
And then, as if fate, weary of watching his pitiful behavior, decided to intervene, his phone rang, saving him from the situation.
"Oh, sorry JJ, this is something important," he said, even though he didnât recognize the number.
His friend looked at him with suspicion.
Having received the call, he didnât even have time to speak when someone on the other end beat him to it. That was enough for him to guess who was calling.
"Hello. Dr. Spencer Reid? This is the investigative department. We have a few questions for you regarding a missing woman who was last seen with you."
JJ noticed the change in his expression and surely registered how he took a few steps away so she wouldnât hear his response.
"Very funny," he snapped. He was surprised at how pleased he felt hearing her voice. His muscles relaxed a little, like when she told him about herself at his request. "You know that the investigative department doesnât contact suspects by phone?"
"Jerk, fool, and fun killer."
He let out a laugh so soft it sounded more like a sigh.
"You know why Iâm calling, right?" she asked. He could hear her moving around the apartment, closing some doors, as if she were hiding. "Iâm not going to yell at you now about why you ditched me, because itâs not exactly that you ditched me, but you kind of did. Are you keeping up?"
"Ditch me?" he repeated, surprised. "You mean... our late-night meetings?"
"No, I mean the book club where we meet every Monday."
"Something came up at work," he explained, ignoring her sarcasm. "Something really, really important, and it didnât occur to me to let you know... Actually, I didnât even think youâd be waiting for me."
He said it sincerely. Until now, he had thought that the girl's question during their last conversation about whether he would come was merely out of politeness, not because she actually wanted to see him.
"Of course I waited. And I was worried when you didnât show up. You know how few people visit me, when someone finally came through that door, I dropped the mop because I thought it was you."
He fell silent, feeling a warmth in his chest. Lately, he had felt lonely, not just with his own problems but in other areas of life as well. The sadness made him think he was losing interest in things that had once brought him so much joy. Without all of that, he felt a little like a lighthouse in the sea, with nothing and no one within a few milesâ radius. On top of that, he had isolated himself a bit from his loved ones, he had to admit. It was only these late-night meetings and this phone call that made him realize he wasnât completely alone.
By chance, he caught JJ's gaze. He wasnât completely aloneâhe had friends around himâbut that didnât change the fact that he felt like he didnât deserve them.
"Can you even talk right now, Doctor? If Iâm interrupting something important, you can just say so."
"In literally one minute, Iâll have to get back to workâŚ"
"Alright. Setting a timer for sixty seconds. Damn, Iâve already wasted like ten saying that. Never mind. Anyway, I get that something might have come up and you couldnât make it. Iâm not mad. But Iâd really like to talk to you. If you get the chance, stop by. You know where."
"Iâll come by as soon as Iâm back. Probably not today. Iâll call you then."
"No, donât call," she asked. Surprised, he furrowed his brows. "Just show up. Itâll be romantic, donât you think?"
"I hate to break it to you, but neither of us has what it takes to be a romantic," he replied gently, regretting that he was talking to her over the phone instead of face to face. It was always so hard for him to understand the intentions and meaning behind othersâ words when he couldnât see them.
"I do," she protested. "Maybe not you. You seem like the type who, when a woman asks for flowers, buys her a flycatcher."
"And whatâs wrong with a flycatcher? It has an exotic and intriguing look, is a natural insecticide that helps reduce the use of chemical ones, and itâs very easy to care for. Besides, let me remind you that once you told me to take your hand and breathe, then asked if you didnât sound like you were coaching a woman in labor. Is that your idea of romance?"
"That has nothing to do with my sense of romance. I just sometimes canât keep my mouth shut. But honestly, flycatchers are freaking awesome. Iâve always wanted one. Still, my advice is, if you ever find yourself debating between buying a woman roses or a Venus flytrap, itâs safer to go with the roses."
"And what if Iâm certain that the only woman Iâd ever want to buy flowers for would prefer a Venus flytrap?"
"Deduce that yourself, Doctor."
He couldnât help but smile. It felt strangeâhis cheek muscles had grown unaccustomed to that kind of effort.
"I know my sixty seconds are up," she said after a moment, her voice calmer and less chaotic. "But thereâs one more thing I wanted to ask you."
"What is it?"
"How are you doing with, you know, the addiction? Was it easier for you after I took the Dilaudid from your apartment?"
The phone began to feel heavy in his hand, and the next breath was simply uncomfortable. He felt the same kind of shame as when JJ had asked if he was feeling better. The girl had been the only person he had confessed to about struggling again. His honesty on that front had made her quickly rise in the ranks of his closest people. It would have been easier to admit to her that he had relapsed. He even had a full explanation ready in his mind: heâs working on a missing child case, and had to do it to focus... He squeezed his eyes shut, unable to bring himself to say it.
"Sorry, I have to go," he lied instead. "Weâll... weâll see each other soon."
"Alright," she replied, somewhat coldly, certainly with concern. "I understand. See you soon."
He noticed that JJ had started glancing in his direction again. He hesitated, wondering if he should approach her, but he felt so bad about himself that he needed to disappear from anyoneâs sight. He needed to focus on something, like the case but wasnât sure if the fog in his mind would even allow that.Â
Disappearing for a moment in the bathroom might help, and at that moment, it seemed like the only solution. And maybe it should have dawned on him much earlier, but only on his way did he start wondering, where the hell did she even get his number from?
*
That same night, you were calm. You were happy that Jude managed to get his number and that he could explain everything to you, which, in turn, made you stop worrying.
You felt the same on night number two and... night number three.
But when Spencer didnât show up for the fourth time, you began to worry.
On the fifth and sixth nights, you called.
By the seventh, you were pissed as fuck.Â
On the eighth day, you decided that since he couldnât be bothered to call back, youâd stop acting like some damn wife waiting for her husband to come home from war. He was probably cheating on you. Well, not literally. Just extending the metaphor.Â
You still spent every night in that room, but you no longer wondered whether heâd show up or not. You just did what was expected of you. As usual, you cleaned the floors. The owner of the hall called, asking you to clean the windows on both sides as well. You couldnât help but greatly appreciate that you were on the ground floor. The cold air that made its way inside left pleasant kisses on your cheeks. The librarian came by to say goodbye. He did this every night exactly at midnight, when his shift ended and he was heading home. Sometimes he stayed to chat, but not always in the mood for it. Lately, he was feeling better and shared with you that the treatment for his wifeâs cancer was showing positive results. Overjoyed, you almost fell out of the window and asked him to deliver good news to you next time when youâre actually standing on the ground.
You had always hated silence, but then it became unbearable. Through the open windows, the sounds of cars reached you, but not enough to drown out your thoughts. After a moment of hesitation, you shoved the headphones into both ears. When you felt particularly bad, you would return, body and soul, to equally painful moments. It usually happened in chronological order, without skipping even a single detail. There would be some minor inconvenience, and suddenly you were back in the dorm, banging on the bathroom door while your roommate was carving herself up in the tub. And a second later, you were at your mother's funeral, with no other family member around to hug you. You had never needed it so much before or after.
You closed your eyes. Usually, this happened in the morning, during those hated hours, not during the beloved nights. You opened them a moment later, and in the window, your face was reflected... along with someone behind you. Scared, you jumped out in a place.Â
"I'm sorry," Spencer said, looking guilty. "I really shouldn't have sneaked up on you when half of you was hanging out of the window."
At first, in shock, you pulled the headphones out of your ears. You stared at him... furious. There had been no contact with him for so long, and now he appeared as if nothing had happened, looking unbelievably good, and holding in his hands...
"Is that a flycatcher?"
He seemed surprised that you were the one to ask about it first. However, he smiled and lifted the plant higher.Â
"That's right."
"Shove it up your ass."
He opened his mouth, but no words came out, seemingly surprised at how quickly your calm tone shifted to anger. You took a moment to examine him more closely. He was dressed neatly and meticulously in a black cardigan, the collar of a white shirt peeking out from under it, and a red tie. Over that, he wore a black coat, not a single crease visible on any of his clothes. He was freshly shaved, his hair seemed a little shorter... but his face still carried that unhealthy expression, and his eyes looked exhausted. It also seemed to you that... he'd lost weight? As if he were trying to hide what was going on inside by his outward appearance.Â
He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself, while his fingers tightened around the pot. "Look," he began, his voice a little unsteady. "I've been going through a really rough time. Actually, it's been like this for quite a while. On top of that, work's been stressful, and then I got sick..."
You interrupted him, your arms crossed firmly across your chest. "I called," you said, your voice sharp.
âI know,â he admitted. âI saw, but somehow I couldnât bring myself to call back because... I was ashamed...â
âAshamed that you started taking Dilaudid again,â you stated more than asked, almost certain your guess was correct. You werenât really angry anymore, just disappointed. Not in him, or in the fact that he hadnât been able to fight the addiction. It hurt you how much he feared admitting it.
He didnât answer, which was confirmation.
His gaze darted away from yours as fast as his legs could carry him. You sighed and moved closer, until the only thing separating you was the flycatcher he held. Your hands rested on the soft fabric of his coat, near his elbows. Due to the difference in height, he would have to lower his head to look at you. But he stubbornly kept it straight.
"Spencer, are you afraid I'll judge you?"
A long silence.
"I know you won't," he finally replied. "You're not the kind of person who judges someone for their struggles, I know that. But it's still so hard for me to talk about it."
"Hey, remember, you don't have to explain anything to me. Or say anything now. We can focus on something else first, and whenever you're ready to talk, I'll still be here. Like every night. Unless you just dropped by for a moment?"
Spencer finally looked at you, and as he lowered his head, a few stray strands of hair fell onto his forehead. You were still holding both of his shoulders, tightening your grip slightly to reassure him.
"I've got the whole night free. We finished working on the case, and I don't have to show up at work tomorrow."
You frowned slightly.
"A case?"
"A child abduction," he explained.
Something about this didn't add up.
"I thought you were... a doctor. You know, like, hospital stuff."Â You could see how much that amused him. "Don't laugh at me! That's what my friend told me. I asked her to find your number, and that's the information she came across."
"I have a doctorate," he clarified, glancing at you with a small, indulgent smile. "That's why 'doctor.' I don't work in a hospital."
"And here I was already picturing you in a lab coat with a stethoscope around your neck," you groaned. "More than once, actually. No offense, but you don't look particularly sexy in white. So, what do you do, then?"
He scratched his nose, hesitating slightly before answering.
"I'm an FBI agent."
For a moment, you stared at him silently, your lips slightly parted like an idiot.
"So, you really are a cop... I was joking about that the whole time we last saw each other! Thatâs why you were laughing so much." Finally connecting the dots, you crossed your hands on your hips, still surprised. You let out a short laugh."A doctorate. Impressive. Now I feel embarrassed around you for dropping out of college."
Spencer's eyebrows shot up.
"I didnât know that. Psychology, right?"
"Last year. I rarely admit it to people, to be honest. I just donât feel like hearing, 'How could you drop out when you were so close to finishing?'"
"I'm sure you had your reasons."
"Well, I like to tell myself that. But honestly, I was just in a really bad place mentally."
"That's a reason too."
For a moment, you fell silent. Youâd never felt particularly ashamed of it, but you also didnât like delving too much into the topic. Wanting to change the subject, you brought a smile to your face and pointed to the plant in his hands.
"Is that my apology gift?"
Spencer handed you a terracotta pot with a young, elongated flycatcher inside.
"Something like this. You're not mad at me for not reaching out, are you?" He tried to make sure.
You looked at him and shook your head.
"Not anymore. I'm very easy to bribe. Shouldn't I water this?"
For the next hour, at your request, he told you about this type of plant with such tiny details that you started to wonder if it was possible for an average person to have such an extensive knowledge⌠on any subject. But you listened intently. First of all, he had that way of talking about things that you always admired in others. It was captivating, filled with passion. Secondly, you were about to become the "mom" of a Venus flytrap. You had to know everything about your baby to take proper care of it.
"Am I boring you?" he asked during his talk.
You shook your head, encouraging him to continue his lecture. Then Spencer asked how your past few days had been, and the conversation flowed on. Easy and pleasant, sometimes abruptly shifting from one topic to another, but then slowly returning to it. Comparing it to your first longer conversation here⌠you were glad to see how much he had opened up.
Carefully choosing your words, you managed to find out that work had been the trigger that led him back to taking Dilaudid. When he finally said how terrified he was that his distraction might cost the childâs life, you simply didnât know what to say. Sitting right next to him, you just melted into his side, resting your head on his jacket and wrapping your arm around his back.
"You lost someone recently, didn't you?" you risked asking. "That must have been some kind of trigger too."
A long silence fell, during which you could easily count his breaths. Two long ones.
"She was a member of our team. And to me, like a sister.â
You were surprised when Spencer gently laughed at those words.
"I still carry it with me," he said, reaching into his coat. He pulled out a small, pocket-sized edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Youâd seen him with that book before. "But I just can't manage to read a single page. I'd really like to, though. I loved that book as a kid."
"I hated reading as a child," You recalled. "My mom loved it. Mostly fantasy; for my sixth birthday, she gave me all of Tolkienâs books. But I preferred the adaptations. I felt like my imagination couldnât grasp all those beautiful images, I preferred to have them in front of me, on screen. It wasnât until college that my roommate gave me The Bell Jar. She was obsessed with Sylvia Plath, which, now that I think about it, was incredibly unsettling. Well, you know, considering what happened later. But maybe Iâm adding things in. Anyway, thatâs when I fell in love with books. The ones that donât take place in distant, magical worlds, but in gray cities or sad suburbs. About people, happy or less so, with good hearts or complete bastards, as long as theyâre realistic."
"Do you have any books left from your mom?" Spencer asked, intrigued. You realized you hadnât talked about her with anyone in a long time, and certainly not in such detail. Until now, you had considered her an intimate memory, reserved almost exclusively for you.
"I donated them to the library near our place. Theyâd just gather dust at mine, I donât know if I could bring myself to reach for them. Itâs not even about my dislike for fantasy⌠I also have two boxes of her clothes hidden in my apartment, I donât even look at them anymore, let alone wear them. She had a wonderful style. A bit like a fairy. She was a psychologist at my high school, and everyone, literally everyone, told me they envied me for having such a mom."
"You also dress like a fairy," he said, studying you more closely. His gaze slowly traveled over you, starting from the light, ruffled blouse and ending at the heavy martens. He snorted. "Okay, like a fairy who goes to rock concerts in her free time."
"Thank you, thatâs the style Iâm aiming for,"
"So whatâs wrong with your momâs clothes? From what youâre saying, I gather you had quite a similar taste."
You hesitated to respond, thinking about those unopened boxes in the tiny attic of your apartment. You couldnât even remember exactly what pieces of clothing were in them. It was just⌠the thought of wearing any of them for an entire day, at work or in your free time, terrified you. Your brain couldnât separate the good memories from the destructive ones; you simply couldnât have anything that reminded you of your mom. All the time.
You noticed Spencer was watching you. His expression was gentle, yet painfully sad.
"It never gets easier, does it?"
You realized he was talking about grief and quickly shook your head. Your words might sound incredibly pessimistic to someone who had recently lost someone.
"No. It does get easier, really," you assured him. "God, thatâs probably not what you want to hear right now..."
"I want you to be honest," he asked.
"It gets easier, but it will never get easy. At least not for me. Though maybe itâs because I just havenât confronted it yet, you know?" You laughed bitterly. "I live in constant denial, and when it gets hard, I put headphones in my ears to stop thinking. And the more time passes, the harder it is to face it.â
"So is that your advice? To accept it as soon as possible?"
"I'm not sure you can give advice on grief, Spencer. It's such an individual thing."
You saw his chest move as he sighed. You both spent some time in silence, as it seemed like you both needed it. Spencer didnât take his eyes off the cover of Alice in Wonderland. You didnât take your eyes off him, but your gaze wasnât fully present, so he didnât even notice you were staring.
You continued your conversation, and the morning arrived at an incredibly fast pace.
There was some tension accompanying the moment of goodbye, for some reason.
"I just want you to know that now, with all the work I have... I wonât be able to come here. Sometimes, sure, but not every day, no chance," he said, standing in front of you as you both got ready to leave. You threw your leather jacket over your shoulders and froze, your hands clenched tightly around the fabric. You quickly corrected yourself. What did you expect, that every night would look like this?
"I totally understand," you assured him, pretending to sound casual. "But if you need this meeting, you know where to find me. No need to announce it."
He nodded, and for a moment, silence hung between you again. You grabbed the pot with the carnivorous plant and froze, not really wanting to head toward the apartment.
"Or maybe..." Spencer started, clearly unsure of himself. "Maybe we could meet somewhere else. You know, like any other... friends. For dinner or whatever you suggest."
You pressed your lips together, feeling an even tighter knot in your stomach.
"Maybe," you said, in a very weak voice. You knew where this was heading. "But... youâre aware of what my day looks like, right? Iâm busy most of the afternoon with work, then I come here for the whole night. At the moment, Iâm only available in the morning..."
You didnât have many friends, nor did you enter into long-term relationships for that very reason. Sometimes you met a fellow night owl, someone with whom you spent some good moments... but it was never forever. You never came across someone for whom the nocturnal lifestyle was a permanent state. Usually, after months or years, they decided theyâd had enough of that way of life and tried to cure their insomnia. But you planned to live that way until the grave.
"There are still weekends. Though sometimes I work then too, if a tough case comes up... But letâs not think about that. Iâm sure we can figure out how to make it work." You had a strange feeling that Spencer didnât believe his own words. He swallowed with a kind of desperation. "At least from time to time, because... I really like you."
You really liked him too. But despite the fact that you deeply hoped you could stay in touch, you were aware that it wasnât a very realistic scenario. You shook your head to stop thinking about it. You grabbed the Venus fly-trap in such a way that you could hug him goodbye. He prolonged the moment, holding you tightly with both arms, and in that gesture, there was... gratitude?
"See you then," he said, barely nodding as he did.
"Soon, I hope," you replied.
He left as you turned to lock the door. You could still feel his strong embrace around your body, and it was as if your body itself was telling you that something was missing.
It was truly a tough morning return to the apartment.
*
"One more time, whatâs the name of that bar?" asked Morgan, who was behind the wheel.
The other matter concerned the murderer targeting female students, with a recurring detail being that each victim had spent the night before their death at the same bar.
âThe Tipsy Cow,â Spencer repeated, without a momentâs hesitation.
He was incredibly focused because he had taken Dilaudid. The first dose after a period of abstinence always put him in quite a pleasant state. The following doses, however, brought unwanted effects. After the first one, he didnât even sweat. When they finished working on the search for that child, he was so stressed about meeting her that he deliberately delayed the moment in order to show up clean again, as if it had never happened. Later, he admitted everything to her anyway, so all the suffering was somewhat pointless when looked at from a broader perspective.
Though he desperately wanted to maintain their relationship... day by day, it became clearer to him that it probably wasn't possible. It was all about time. After a whole day at work, he simply couldn't afford to visit her late at night. Still, he tried to drop by even for an hour. Her mere presence gave him pleasure, the simplest pleasure in the world. He valued their conversations, loved her sometimes chaotic way of speaking, and how attentively she could listen to him. These meetings also motivated him to resist his addiction.
But in the last two weeks... something always came up. December, the end of the year, was always a bit intense.
It seemed to him that she was also drifting away from him a bit. Well, for the past fourteen days and six hours, she hadnât sent him a single picture of how her flycatcher was growing. He didnât know if he had done something wrong or if there was some other reason. In any case, the current case was so complicated and shocking that it looked like another week without contact was aheadâŚ
âThe Tipsy Cow,â Morgan muttered, shaking his head in disdain. âThatâs gonna be the bar with the worst name Iâve ever set foot in. And there have been many.â
âA party animal, huh?â
âI used to be, yeah.â
In recent weeks, Derek had been throwing himself deeper and deeper into work, making it his top priority and always staying late. It was his way of coping with Emily's death. Spencer envied him a little for that. He, on the other hand, was so drained that sometimes, with no real plan... he would scroll through job offers he kept receiving. There were plenty to choose from. But for now, he felt he couldnât bring himself to leave, even though the thought lingered in the back of his mind.
Together, they stepped into the small bar. The colorful, shifting lights gave the space a slightly club-like vibe, but the crowd inside wasnât overwhelming. The music wasnât too loud, and it was easy to move around. The noisiest spot was a small group of men playing pool in the corner, loudly cheering on a brunette in a black jumpsuit.
âWe need to talk to the bartenders, find out who was on shift Friday night. Honestly, itâd be best to question everyone,â Morgan said as they approached the bar, where a burly man in a black polo shirt was busy mixing a drink.Â
"Hey, man. We need a word with you."
He didnât even look up at them.
"Order something or donât. Iâm not here for chit-chat..." he trailed off, his expression shifting the moment he saw the badge. "Okayyy. That changes things."
Spencer stood sideways at the bar, arms crossed over his chest. He was more of an observer than an active participant in the conversation, but his focus was sharp, ready to catch any details crucial to the investigation.
âWere you here last Friday, around 9:30 to 11:00 PM?â
The guy leaned against the bar with one arm, chewing gum as he thought about it.
âNah, on Fridays and weekends, I usually come in later.â
âWe need to know who was tending the bar then. This is serious, dude.â
âDamn, someone died?â
Their looks said it all.
At that moment, a petite bartender with light hair emerged from the back, carrying two glass bottles in her hands. Initially, she didnât look at any of them, seeming a bit detached from her surroundings⌠Spencer straightened up completely.
 What a damn coincidence.
The bartender addressed her by name.
âYouâre here Friday nights, right?â he asked.
The girl, caught off guard, nodded, only now noticing their presence. Her eyes shifted to Morgan, who was closer to her and holding his badge up. The muscles in her face tightened slightly with unease. Her eye makeup was heavier than usualâblack with a touch of shimmer in the corners.
Only then did her gaze lingerâsuspiciously longâon him. Her lower lip parted slightly in surprise. Spencer had no idea if he should acknowledge her. He was keenly aware of how nosy Morgan could be when it came to his personal life, and heâd never mentioned his new acquaintance to anyone on the teamâor in his life, for that matter.
Swallowing hard, he felt a slight panic rise, urging him to say something.
âWe need to talk to you,â he told her, his tone carefully balanced between serious and gentle.
She seemed uneasy about the FBIâs presence; he could see the stress in her piercing eyes, which hadnât left him for a second. He felt a sharp urge to reassure her, to tell her not to worry.
âBut donât stressâitâs just a few questions,â he added, his voice softening.
When he turned his head, he noticed Morgan watching him intently. He avoided his gaze at all costs, pretending to be at ease.
âWas anyone else working with you that night?â Morgan asked.
âPeter,â she replied. âBut heâs on leave right now. His girlfriend just had a baby. A boy. Not that itâs any of your business,â she added quickly. âAnyway, Iâm pretty sure I have his number somewhere if you need itâŚâ
She began hurriedly searching her pockets, tugging at the fabric of her black jeans. She was also wearing a dark purple blouse tied at the waist, with a deep lace-trimmed neckline and wide, flared sleeves that didnât seem particularly practical for bartending.
âYou can give it to us later,â Derek reassured her. âWhat we really need are the details. I want you to try to remember everything that happened that evening. If you canât, because itâs too loud here⌠Reid, maybe you two can head to the back?â
There was a faint, sly glint in his eyes. Did he⌠figure it out?
Derek shifted his gaze to the gum-chewing bartender. âAnd Iâll have a chat with you.â
Spencer let her lead him to the small back room. He turned to close the door and, when he faced her again, noticed her raised eyebrows and the faint smile playing on her lips.
âComing to work today, this was the last thing I expected,â she chuckled.
Spencer smiled slightly as well. âItâs been a while. You look goodâlike youâre sleeping better. Does your partner know we know each other, or are we sneaking around like weâre in some kind of movie?â
âHe doesnât,â he replied, quickly adding, âBut of course, itâs not a secret. And the fact that we know each other has no impact on the investigation. By the way⌠I really like your blouse.â
She raised her arms, showing off the flared sleeves, clearly pleased heâd noticed.
âGuess where I got it,â she said, and without waiting for his attempt, revealed, âItâs my momâsâ
He clearly remembered their conversation on the topic, so he tilted his head with a smile.
âIâm glad you finally pushed through,â he said quietly. He, too, had something to share. âAs for me⌠a few days ago, I started reading Alice in Wonderland. Iâm not sure if you rememberâŚâ
âThe edition you got from your friend? Of course, I remember. Thatâs good news. Are you feeling better?â
He scratched his nose, unsure of what to say. It had been hard for him to identify his state lately; things were stable, maybe even better, if not for the fact that he had gone back to taking Dilaudid.
âAnd howâs Steven?â he asked, referring to the flycatcher they had named together some time ago.
âHeâs good. The kid I sometimes look after stuck his fingers inside recently, and she bit him. I got a little scared that his mom might sue, but it turns out she doesnât hurt people,â she said, but then straightened up suddenly. âWait, here we are chatting, and I think you were supposed to be questioning me.â
Spencer immediately caught himself.
âYeah, right. So, Iâd like you to close your eyes, okay?â
She followed his instructions, responding to his quiet and focused tone. He needed her to recall everything that had happened that evening, to bring back any memories that could help them catch the unsub. As her eyelids lowered, she took a step closer. Suddenly, the room seemed even smaller than it was, as if the walls were trying to pull them together, closing in. Spencer lowered his voice further, causing her face to twitch slightly.
The last time they had been this close, they had accidentally found themselves too near. Her gaze had dropped to his lips, she sighed, and kissed him. He had been caught off guard, unsure of what to say, and she... acted like nothing had happened. He felt the gradual distance between them, and it bothered him more than he cared to admit. He didn't even allow himself to acknowledge how often he thought about that kiss. In fact, it had been the only thing on his mind since they entered this room and stood face-to-face once again. At the same time, her expression and behavior suggested as if nothing had ever happened. She always had a more relaxed attitude toward touch than he did, but the kiss must have meant something to her, especially since she had initiated it, right?
Not knowing what the hell he was doing, he brought his head closer to hers. He didnât touch her, just froze in place, very close to her face. She had already said everything she knew, heâd gathered some valuable information, but still, she didnât open her eyes. Was she aware of how close heâd gotten? Could she feel his presence right next to her?
He had no intention of getting closer to her; they were both at work. It was just⌠heâd been overcome by temptation and was curious about her reaction. But he quickly withdrew and cleared his throat quietly.
âThatâs it. You can open your eyes,â he issued the final command. He knew it looked awkward, scratching the back of his neck, but he couldnât help it. âThanks a lot for your help. I think this could be important for the investigation.â
âI hope so,â she said, sadly. âThey were⌠innocent girls. I canât believe this man just comes here so casually now.â
âYou never know what the other person is hiding,â he remarked, feeling a sudden tightening of concern in his chest. They had already left the back room and were approaching the bar where Morgan was still talking to the bartender. He slowed his pace. âBe careful when you walk alone at night, okay?â
âAm I in danger?â Worry flashed across her face.
âFrom this particular killer? Well⌠youâre not his type. But heâs not the only person with bad intentions in the world. Just be careful, please.â
She nodded, looking him in the eyes.
âFor the first time, Iâm glad Iâm not anyoneâs type,â she added after a moment, breaking the seriousness of the situation. Spencer held back a chuckle. Morgan glanced their way briefly. âGoodbye, agent.â
âGoodbye,â he replied with a short grunt. He wanted to ask if they would see each other again soon, but he knew it was highly unlikely, especially while they were focused on their work.
He never thought any relationship he had with a woman would be tested by something as mundane as differing daily rhythms. Still, he intended to hold on to the hope that it might work. Maybe something would change soon?
A sly grin tugged at Morganâs lips as they walked back to the car.
âShe caught your eye, didnât she?â he teased.
Spencer looked at him, feigning pity.
âIâm a professional. I donât get distracted at work.â
âShould I remind you howâŚâ
The faint, really faint trace of a blush on Spencer's cheeks prompted Morgan to burst into laughter.
*
The owner of the room across from the library called, asking that you not come that night. Apparently, there was a meeting planned that would stretch into the early hours.
You had become so accustomed to your routine that, when you returned to your apartment from the bar, you didnât know what to do with yourself. Jude was getting ready for work; you exchanged just a few words before she left. So, you laid down on the couch with your laptop on your stomach, unbuttoning your pants for comfort as you lazily read a book review online.
Your gaze kept drifting between the screen and the flycatcher sitting on the coffee table
Earlier, you had thought about Spencer a lot, but more out of concern or curiosity. Since your encounter at the bar, however, those thoughts had shifted in another direction. He was literally occupying more space in your mind. At random moments, you even found yourself catching his scentâthe same one you had noticed when he was so close.
You kissed him because you wanted to. Simple explanation. If it were up to you, you would have gone even further. But you knew that wouldnât be good for either of you. You were already starting to grow attached, and it hurt to realize how little future you could see in your potential relationship. Potential relationship. You were imagining too much.
You closed your laptop with a resigned sigh and got off the couch. Jude was at work, Spencer was probably either working or already in bed, and the rest of your friends might not appreciate you suddenly reaching out after months of silence. But just because you were alone didnât mean you couldnât have fun on your own, right? You hadnât gone out in ages. You were in the mood to dance, to have some fun, to meet someone newâa wild girl or guy for just one night, then forget about them completely. You needed that. Lately, there had been so much tension inside you.
So, you spent an hour in front of the mirror, touching up your makeup and thinking about which shoes would go best with your black mini dress. It wasnât just any black dressâthat would be boring. This one had short sleeves, exposed shoulders, and a subtle, astronomical pattern with a delicate sheen.
You left the apartment barefoot, holding your heels in your hand. The stairs in your building were too steep to navigate in those shoes. On the way, you threw a jacket over your shoulders, heading to a club you and Jude had been to before, where you both loved the atmosphere. It was there that you met a group of five friends who pulled you into their circle even though they didnât know you, and the whole night felt like it lasted only a minute. Jude still kept in touch with a few of them. You were hoping for a similar adventure.
You didnât drink much when you went out alone for safety reasons. You quickly found yourself lost in the rhythm of the clubâs music, dancing with strangers and clearing your mind in the midst of the chaos. Hours passed, and someone tried to kiss you, pulling you into a tight embrace, but you couldnât feel it. It didnât bring you any pleasure, yet you had a twisted feeling that it wouldâve been different if it had been someone elseâŚ
You stepped outside to get some fresh air. Your cheeks were likely flushed from both the dancing and the stuffy atmosphere inside.
The phone rang. Jude?
"Hey, girl," she said, her voice clearly worried. "Are you home?"
"I went out to the city," you replied, feeling uneasy. "Is something wrong?"
"No, nothing... it's just that the neighbor called me saying Richard is hanging around our door again. Be careful, okay? You know, you never know what might go through his head. And we don't even know if he's sober. At this hour, probably not."
You clenched your lips. The December chill hurt like knives, it was almost three in the morning, and you hadnât planned on staying out until dawn. From the start, you intended to head back early, maybe relax in front of the TV for a bit, and perhaps even try to sleep, since nothing else seemed more appealing. Of course, you werenât angry at Jude; it wasnât her fault that her ex turned out to be a psycho.
"Thanks for telling me. Donât worry, Iâm not going back to the apartment for now."
Your roommate hung up, as she had to return to work. You stood there facing a dilemma. Should you go back to the club? You felt too drained to dance, and sitting alone in a corner seemed incredibly boring.
Maybe it was that one drink you had, but your legs seemed to take you in a certain direction.
You werenât sure if Spencer was even home. But if you had nothing else to do, why not check? A short walk. You were a little desperate, after all, you didnât have anywhere else to go. Thatâs how you justified it. You were going to him because you had no other option.
He opened the door, dressed in a wrinkled shirt, trousers, and a tie loosely hanging around his neck. His hair was in disarray, and you felt an urge to run your fingers through it and style it the way you wanted, but it wouldâve been awkward.
"Hey. Am I interrupting?"
Surprised, Spencer shook his head.
"No... Actually, I was asleep."
"In those clothes?"
"I fell asleep while reading..." he explained, trailing off when he noticed your appearance. To put it modestly, you looked incredibly hot. For a long moment, his gaze lingered on your dress, visible beneath the open jacket and ending high on your thigh. "Very... nice dress. Is it... is it your mom's too?"
You chuckled.
"Can you imagine my mom, a school psychologist, in a dress covering half her ass?"
Embarrassed, Spencer raised his hands in apology and also chuckled softly.
"Sorry, I'm still half-asleep. Anyway... is there something wrong that you're here?"
"My mentally unstable ex-boyfriend of my roommate is lurking under our apartment.â You confessed bluntly âI'm a little scared to go back, and... I didn't know where else I could go."
It seemed like he was suddenly waking up quickly. He swung the door wide open, letting you in.
"Of course, come in. Is he dangerous?"
"He shows up every now and then and then disappears. It's like a lottery. Jude doesn't want to ever see him again, so we just pretend we're not here when it happens."
The inside looked just as you remembered. The lights were off everywhere except the bedroom, where he was probably reading. You allowed yourself to take off your uncomfortable shoes and set them by the door.
"Why don't you report it to the police?" His forehead furrowed with concern.
"Jude doesn't want to. And I don't want to do anything against her will. But I swear, if this happens again, I'll convince her. Or I'll do it myself."
"You should," he said, and suddenly a silence fell between you.
You weren't sure how to act. You'd barged in on him in the middle of the night, pulling him from his sleep. Not to mention, you hadn't seen each other since that conversation at the bar.
"Let me take your jacket," he said after a moment, as if remembering how to behave when hosting a guest.
You slowly took it off, revealing the full dress. Spencer momentarily let his gaze linger on it, but then he caught himself and turned away to hang your jacket. The glance didn't embarrass you in the slightest; if anything, you expected to catch him looking.
"Sorry if I woke you," you said, realizing you should probably apologize. It was only then that you began to feel a little awkward about the situation.
"You don't have to apologize. It's not your fault. And I'm glad I can help," he said, and once again, silence settled between you. Spencer placed his hand on his forehead as he realized you were still standing in the hallway. "Sorry, it's been a long time since anyone's visited, and I don't even know how to act... Do you want something to drink, or need anything?"
"Iâm fine," you assured him, walking behind him into the living room. "I don't want you to act like I'm some important guest, Spencer. Or like you need to serve me."
"But you are an important guest," he replied.
A warm, gentle smile appeared on your lips.
"What were you reading?" you asked, leaning your lower back against the kitchen island, the two rooms connected as one. You glanced around the cozy interior, in soft, almost warm hues, where the darkness of the night blended with the orange light of the lamp. "Let me guess, some spine-chilling thriller?"
"I have spine-chilling thrillers every day at work," he snorted. "I was reading... Emma. Jane Austen."
Your eyebrows shot up.
"You fell asleep reading classic literature on a Friday night? Spencer Reid, what kind of man are you?"
"In a good way or a bad way?"
He stood across from you, his arms loosely crossed over his chest. Your eyes lingered on the first few undone buttons of his shirt.
"Of course, in a good way. Why would I judge someone for reading?"
"I donât know," he shrugged. "Some people think itâs boring. And weird, especially on a Friday night. And what about you? What were you doing before your roommateâs ex showed up?" he asked, a playful glint in his eyes as he nodded meaningfully toward your outfit. "Were you reading too?"
You lifted your chin high.
"Exactly. I was reading my favorite Shakespearean drama in my favorite dress. And those incredibly comfortable shoes I left by your door."
"That goes without saying."
"I definitely wasnât at any club."
"I wouldnât even suspect you of that."
"I was doing what any God-fearing virgin would do," you said, bursting into laughter at the absurdity. "Alright, alright. Iâm getting carried away. Now I actually feel like reading something. But nothing too classicâI donât have the brainpower for it. Do you happen to have any romance novels?"
I'm afraid not."
"Really? You have more books in your home than the library in my hometown, and not a single romance? Iâm not talking about dark erotica or anythingâjust something subtle. Friends to lovers, polite sex..."
Spencer choked on a laugh.
"Sorry, but are you drunk?"
You were just horny.Â
"Not a drop of alcohol has touched my lips. I'm just hyperactive. Thatâs what the night does to me."
"Yeah, I can see that."
"So? Aren't you hiding any sinful books in there?"
He rolled his eyes, clearly amused rather than annoyed by your persistence.
"You're welcome to look," he offered, gesturing toward one of the shelves. "But Iâm not promising youâll find anything like that."
"But if I do, you owe me a drink."
âAnd if it turns out Iâm right, then what?â
You bit your lip, pondering.Â
âIâll figure something out.â
âYou know, I wonât enter a bet unless I know what I get in return.â
âAnd what do you want?â
âA dinner together,â he replied without hesitation. âOr breakfast, if you prefer.â
âDeal,â you answered just as quickly. You werenât worried about regretting itâyour blood was buzzing too much for that.
He extended his hand for you to shake on it, sealing the deal. Instead of letting go, you held onto his fingers firmly and tugged him toward the bookshelf. He stood so close as you examined the books one by one, taking some out to inspect their covers to see if they suggested any hint of romance. When they didnât, he let out a short laugh, his breath brushing against your neck and sending a shiver down your spine. You didnât let it show.
âSpencerâŚâ you started after a while, glancing at him from the corner of your eye. âIt counts if the book has a romantic subplot, right?â
âNo, it doesnât count! We agreed on a romance. A full-fledged, contemporary one.â
âWe didnât say contemporary.â
âI assumed it was implied since I mentioned owning Jane Austen books. Pride and Prejudice is a romance, among other thingsâŚâ
âHa! So you do have one. I won!â You raised your hands high in victory.
ââŚBut itâs also a social and domestic novel. Doesnât count.â
You poked him in the chest with your finger. âYou donât know how to lose.â
He glanced at the spot where you touched him, clearly trying not to smile.
âMaybe I just care a lot about that dinner,â he admitted boldly.
You didnât know what to say. You tried to look at him confidently, but it was hard to think and maintain eye contact with him at the same time.
âOr breakfast,â you murmured.
âOr breakfast,â he agreed. Realizing how close he was standing, he instinctively stepped back half a pace. âSo, are you ready to admit my victory?â
You shot him a defiant look.
âNot a chance. I havenât even checked all the books yet. Iâm only about three-quarters through. Who knows what kind of BDSM might be lurking in the last quarter?â
âSeriously?â he asked with a sigh. âOkay, just look at me. Do I seem like the kind of guy who reads stuff like that?â
âHonestly, you look like the kind of guy who reads encyclopedias. But the one thing I know about people is that appearances can be deceiving. Still waters run deep.â
He shook his head in disbelief.
âYouâre as stubborn as they come.â
âMaybe I just really want that drink,â you teased.
âI can make you one,â he offered unexpectedly.
âSeriously?â The suggestion caught you off guard.
Spencer shrugged casually.
âI donât drink much, but some friends gave me a few bottles for my birthday.â
You hesitated, considering.
âIâm not really in the mood,â you admitted. You felt good, even without alcohol. âBut I do have another request⌠Do you happen to have something I could change into? I wonât lie, this isnât the most comfortable dress⌠though itâs absolutely stunning.â
He smiled softly.
"Youâre right. And yes, Iâll find something for you to change into. Just⌠itâll be something of mine."
Following him into the bedroom, you let out a small chuckle.
"You know, I didnât expect you to have a closet full of womenâs clothes. Plus, in my size. Although, who knows what girls leave behind at your place. Itâs a tactic, you know? You leave a sock at a guyâs place to have an excuse to come back. Unless you didnât like it, then you have to accept losing the sock."
He didnât say anything, opening the wardrobe to find something appropriate for you. Youâd been in his bedroom before and didnât feel the need to look around; nothing had changed inside.
"Do you do this often?" he asked, inspecting a t-shirt. "Use the sock strategy?"
"No," you replied, shrugging. "Iâm too straightforward for that. If I like it, I just go back and say 'Letâs do it again' Or I donât leave at all. Iâm a bit of a parasite too."
He chuckled at the comparison and finally handed you some clothes. You didnât really look at them; you just needed something looser, something you hadnât danced in for hours at the club.
"You know where the bathroom is, right?"
You confirmed and were about to head in that direction when you stopped.
"Wait," you said, turning back toward him. But then, you turned again, facing him with your back. "The zipper on the dress," you explained, pulling your hair to the front. "I could manage it myself, but I donât want to risk breaking it. Could youâŚ?"
"Y-yeah," he agreed after a moment, stepping closer.
He stood just behind you, reaching for the top of your back. Before he pulled the zipper down, there was a moment where he simply paused, unmoving. Your knees suddenly trembled, almost impatiently. Then, he tugged at the zipper, unfastening the dress, and the coolness and freedom teased your skin.
You could have said thank you and headed to the bathroom, but you didnât. Something kept your body rooted in place, right there next to him, feeling the pads of his fingers on the lower part of your dress.
Even his breath, louder and irregular.
When you began to, slightly disappointed, assume that he wouldnât do anything more, his lips found a spot on your neck, kissing it slowly. You inhaled deeply, your head instinctively tilting back, giving him more access, as if you had been waiting for just that. He stopped for a longer time in this specific place, pressing on it harder, as you barely hold a groan.Â
Your breath was given a free rollercoaster ride.
You reached your hand back, wrapping it around his head and pulling him closer to you. You felt him sigh directly into your skin, leaving another two hungry kisses on an exposed skin on your shoulder. God, why were you still wearing that dress?
You abruptly stopped, turning around and almost hitting the top of your head against his jaw. You didn't care about it, and the thought of apologizing never crossed your mind, just simply pushed him, planting a strong kiss right on his lips.
The clothes he gave you slipped from your hand and fell to the floor, but neither of you were concerned about it, as you were both too absorbed to care. You pushed him again, this time onto the bed, on which he sat, surprised by your suddenness. You saw red marks creeping onto the parts of the neck exposed by the undone shirt.Â
"Spencer, Spencer, Spencer," you said, shaking your head in a mock reprimand. He tilted his head to the side, unsure of where you were going with this, his fingers impatiently brushing your waist on both sides. "You lied to me."
Your hands grabbed his face, positioning just under his jaw and lifting it upward so you could find his lips right against yours.Â
âI lied to you?â
"âThat's right. You said you don't read romances. But tell me, how does someone who doesn't do that know such practices?â
âPractices?â he repeated again, surprised."
His gaze was focused solely on your lips to which he tried to get closer, but you hadn't allowed him to yet.Â
"This whole unbuttoning of the dress. And then, the neckâ
With your index finger, you traced along the skin on his neck
âDid you like it?â he asked, his voice sounding a bit hoarse. He removed one hand from your waist and took your hand, the one you had been playing with.
âDid I like it?â you scoffed with a genuine laugh.âIâm like half naked now. Answer that for yourselfâ
Undressing was the element you hated the most. You became impatient and couldn't understand why your clothes couldn't just disappear from you, instead of threatening to burn your already overheated skin. Spencer didn't help, so slow in his movements. You had a feeling he was doing it on purpose. He probably enjoyed watching you struggle to untangle yourself from the dress. He waited a minute before helping you, effortlessly pulling it over your head.
Maybe slow wasn't the most accurate description. The way he touched his body wasnât slow. It was like rationing a treat, breaking it into small pieces and savoring them one by one. Meanwhile, it gazed straight into your mouth, shouting, eat me!
It required incredible self-control and composure, but it resulted in something more than just pleasure. When he found himself right between your legs, his lips touching gently every single inch of your thigh and refusing to go further despite your pleas, you compared him to the previous guys you slept with. With them, on the other hand, you had to tell them to slow down, to do everything more carefully, and not to focus solely on their own needs.
âDoes it feel right?â He asked, briefly lifting his gaze, his hands gripping your thighs.
Your back arched, probably enough of an answer, but you confirmed it with a soft moan.
"I'd rather you said it out loud. Does it feel right?"
"That's edging on sadism, do you realize that?" you whimpered, trying to release the tension by pulling at his hair.
He stopped again.
"Please, do it again."
It wasn't something he had to beg for.
The rest went similarly. You liked how his confidence and courage grew, but you also went wild when, at certain moments, the same gentle and sometimes awkward Spencer returned. It was a perfectly balanced mix.
"Can you talk to me more?" he asked over time, once he was already inside you. "I want to know how you feel about all of this." After those words, your forehead twitched slightly as you felt the onset of pain. "Does it hurt?"
"No," you whispered, accompanied by a faintly tired exhale.âA little. But it's normal I just didn't have sex for a whileâ
"No, it shouldn't hurt you. Do you want to stop?"
"Just... give me a moment."
He slowed down, almost stopping. You took a breath, pressing your forehead to his. You stayed like that for a moment, neither of you in a hurry. After all, where to? Outside, the night still reigned, long and patient, winterâs grip holding steady. You liked having his face so close to yours, joining them together and not speaking. For the first time, you could truly say that you enjoyed the silence.
You had always considered silence overwhelming, incapable of calming the chaos that arose in your mind. You preferred moments of wildness, loud sounds, and fast pace, but it was in that silence, which fell then, that you found a peace filled with intimacy.
You wrapped your arms tighter around his neck.
"It's okay, I'm ready."
After everything, you simply lay facing each other, tangled in one another. Actually, you didnât like that expression "after everything." After everythingâafter what exactly? Sex wasnât just about the physical act; it also included the long moment before and the even more significant one after. It was precisely that moment after which revealed the true you both. How much you cared for each other and how much you meant to each other beyond the bed. That was often missing in one-night stands; the perspective of quickly disappearing from each other's lives and being forgotten somehow intensified selfishness in people.
Lying there, you played with the hair on his forehead.
"You know, they say this is the moment when people are the most honest with each other."
"Do you want to squeeze a few secrets out of me?" he asked.
"Just one," you said mysteriously, turning onto your back. Before that, you noticed his eyebrows furrow.
He propped himself up on his elbow to look at you again.
"Which one?"
You pretended to hesitate before answering. You tried with all your might to keep the smile from appearing on your face, betraying you.
"I'm afraid that even now, you won't be honest with me."
"I'm starting to get worried."
"I'll tell you, but you have to promise to tell the truth. Give me your pinky."
"What?"
"A pinky promise, you fool."
âO-okayâÂ
Clearly surprised, he did what you asked.
"Now tell me the truth. You got any romance books at your place you're too embarrassed to admit to?"
He rolled his eyes.
"I'll find them," you teased. "Iâll get up right now and find them."
You pretended to get up, but he pulled you closer, preventing you from moving.
"You're not going anywhere."
*
You fell asleep. Â
Asleep. At night. Â
Completely normal for any other person, but for you...? The shock made your heart beat faster, painfully colliding with your chest. The blanket slid off your shoulders as you sat up. Â
Spencer sighed in his sleep, the kind of breath that often heralds waking, but not this time. He was still deep in slumber, lying on his stomach, his face turned toward you. Falling asleep next to each other after sex had always seemed a bit... clichĂŠ to you. Pulled straight from the movies. It looked pleasant on screen and spared the viewer the awkward scene of putting on clothes that had been scattered across the floor in a frenzy of passion just moments earlier. In reality, who had time for that? Â
For you, someone who had been struggling with sleep issues for years, it was usually just lying in bed next to a guy sleeping soundly, feeling bored. A sign it was time to get up and leave. Â
Youâd planned to spend the night at Spencerâs place from the start. Well, maybe not specifically in the same bed, but as his... guest. Because of Richard, of course. So when he fell asleep mid-conversation, you didnât have many options on where to go. Besides, you didnât want to leave. It was nice lying next to him; his face looked so innocent in sleep. You had thought about quietly grabbing a book or reaching for one of the ones in the bedroom, but that would probably wake him up. So you rested your head back on the pillow and watched him. At some point, without realizing it, your eyelids grew heavy. Â
It was a very early hour, or so the clock on the nightstand claimed. It felt unreal to you. Usually, at this time, you were sitting in an empty room, waiting for some lonely soul desperate for a conversation to walk in.Â
For weeks, you had been the perfect example of a situationship. The kind where you both almost openly wanted each other, but something held you back from truly committing. For you, it was fear and doubts about your vastly different lifestyles. You could try and give it a chance, For weeks, you had been the perfect example of a situationship. The kind where you both almost openly wanted each other, but something held you back from truly committing. For you, it was fear and doubts about your vastly different lifestyles. You could try and give it a chance, but... it would hurt if it didnât work out. Youâd lose a friend and confidant. A man who had come to you at his lowest point and decided to trust you, making you feel special. Someone who understood you, made you laugh, and had even given you a Venus flytrap. On top of that, he had an excellent taste in books, an incredible intellect, and, to be completely fair, was very good in bed.
Well, running away wasnât an option anymore. You knew that when Spencer woke up, youâd have two choices: pretend nothing happened again, or have a conversation. You were both adults, so it was only reasonable to expect youâd choose the latter
You knew you wouldnât be able to fall asleep again. It was an anomaly, one that wouldnât repeat itself. Still, you wanted to let him sleep peacefully, feeling guilty for disrupting his night by barging into his apartment. Before finding a comfortable position by his side, ready to lie there for an hour or two, you glanced one last time at the clockâand something caught your attention.
âSpencer,â you said softly, not wanting to wake him too abruptly. It didnât work, so you gently shook his bare shoulder. âSpencer, your phone.â
It must have been silent, but you could clearly see an incoming call displayed on the screen.
At the word phone, he reacted as if it were a blaring alarm. He bolted upright, still half-asleep, and pressed the device to his ear.
âHotch?â he asked, his voice rough and groggy, sounding almost like a cough. He listened to the person on the other end, rubbing his face with one hand to wake himself up, then sighing heavily as he ran that same hand through his hair.
"Iâll be there in an hour," he said, his tone laced with clear reluctance but also an undeniable sense of duty. When the call ended, he turned to you over his shoulder. The expression on his face softened.
"Hey," he said gently.
"A new case?" you guessed, trying not to let it show how much you didnât want him to leave. After all, it was what it wasâhis work was far more needed by the world than by you in bed.
"Weâve been working on it for a while, and thereâs been some kind of breakthrough... Iâm really sorry. I feel bad, leaving like this,"Â
"Spencer, I understand. It must be something important. Go, and donât worry about me. Iâll get myself together and head back home soon..."
"And what about your roommateâs ex?" he interrupted, giving a slight shake of his head. "You donât know if heâs gone yet. You shouldnât be going back alone."
"Itâs Richard. Heâs a very impatient motherfucker. Heâs probably already gone," you replied.
"You donât know that."
"So, what are you going to do?" you scoffed. "Take me there by the hand?"
Spencer was silent for a moment, looking at you as if the answer was obvious.
"Just stay here,"
His suggestion made you raise an eyebrow. Spencer shrugged.
âWell, what? Itâs barely five in the morning. I donât want to kick you out this early just because I got a call from work.â
"Kick me out?" you chuckled, causing him to look at you with a slightly puzzled expression. At the same time, he was heading toward the wardrobe, realizing he didnât have much time and should start getting dressed. "If you call this kicking someone out, then I donât even have a word for how other guys behave. By the way, could you hand me, I donât know, a sweater or something?"
The apartment had a pleasant temperature, but you still had an overwhelming urge to wrap yourself in something warm and soft. The only piece of clothing you had with you was a short-sleeved dress. And a jacket, but that didnât really count.
"In that case..." Spencer began, rummaging through the clothes in his wardrobe, his brow slightly furrowed as if he were seriously contemplating his choice. He didnât seem amused by your earlier jokeâin fact, he looked surprisingly focused.
His fingers finally stopped on one of the hangers. He pulled something out and turned toward you with a faint smile.
"I'm tremendously proud that I don't fall into the category of those other guys. You like purple, right?" he added, holding up a sweater in a deep plum shade.
"I meant just any piece of clothing. But yes, I do like purple," you said, stretching your hands out in front of you, encouraging him to toss you the sweater.
Instead of throwing it, he stepped closer to you. At first, you didnât understand what he was doing, especially when he stopped right in front of you, still holding the sweater in his hands.
It dawned on you a moment later, and you burst into laughter, raising your arms up so he could slide it over your head. The sweater draped over your body, proving to be slightly oversized. The V-shaped neckline awkwardly settled on your shoulder, slipping down and leaving it exposed.
Spencer, almost mechanically and with focus, slid his hands under the fabric to free your hair that was tangled beneath it. After probably half the night in the club and the second half spent in bed, it probably resembled a huge mess of hay, but you werenât particularly concerned about it. It only just occurred to you that he had to leave soon, and knowing his work and the constant impossibility of syncing your schedules, you might not see each other again until the next few days.
"Iâd like to talk to you," Spencer suddenly said, almost as if he had to force the words out, quietly taking a breath. "About all of this. About us. We donât really have time for it now, but as soon as I get back, Iâll make sure to meet you. No matter what time it is or how tired I am, okay?"
You wanted to comment on the last part of his words, the bit about being tired, assuring him that you werenât asking for that from him, but something in his gaze stopped you. It was funny how his eyes were both sleepy and lively at the same time. His dark iris blended with his dilated pupil, the boundary between them fading, making them almost hypnotic.
"So, are you staying here?" he asked.
A delicate smile passed over your face.
"I see this means a lot to you. Arenât you afraid Iâll start digging through your books?" "All of them are at your disposal," he reassured, also lifting the corners of his mouth slightly.
However, suddenly his expression darkened, as if some spell had been cast, taking away all his confidence. For a long moment, he stayed silent, and you tilted your head in confusion.
"Can... can I kiss you?" he finally asked.
"Do I need to remind you that we already slept together?"
"Well..."
Whatever he was about to say, you simply cupped his neck with your hand, pulling him closer. A sweet, shallow, slightly long âa typical farewell kiss.
He had already mostly dressed, with only the task of crouching down by the nightstand left, to open the safe inside. You knew he kept his gun and badge there. You tried not to look in his direction while he entered the code, just as common decency dictated looking away when someone unlocks their phone. But still, you noticed how his fingers trembled slightly.
When he left, you werenât quite sure what to do with yourself. If you were anyone else, you wouldâve hidden under the blanket, absorbing the scent of both of you, sinking into an incredibly peaceful sleep. However, you were aware that wouldnât happen. You pulled a pillow under your head, lost in thought, haunted by some strange unease.
You spent a long time simply wandering around the apartment, unable to help the fact that you were one of those people who got bored quickly. Jude had just returned, you thought, as the clock struck eight. The main trait of her ex was unpredictability, but even he followed certain patterns and routines in life. He didnât show up that early because he knew she was still asleep. He preferred to knock on the door at noon and bother her during her free time.
You started getting ready before you even made a decision. First, you made the bed, then undressed again to slip back into the dress. On top, you put Spencerâs sweater, for some unknown reason not wanting to part with it. Was this some sort of reversed sock strategy? Were you taking his clothes instead of leaving them behind?
An impulse shot through your body as you stood by the door. Not even knowing what you were doing, you simply returned to the bedroom, falling to your knees in front of the, as it turned out, unopened safe.
Spencer hadnât emptied it completely. Inside was a dose of Dilaudid, the reason his hands had been trembling earlier.
An unexpected wave of guilt hit you with force. Recently, you hadnât brought up the topic with him at all, assuming that if he needed to talk about it and was ready to, he would bring it up himself. But thatâs not how people in addiction found themselves. They could deny it to the very end, doing anything to avoid seeking help.
You wiped your face with your hand. Should you even confront him about it when you saw him again? Well, the answer was probably yes, but the real question was how.
You came up with the idea of perhaps arranging a night in your room across from the library. That place had an oddly polite way of encouraging people to be honest, without making them feel like information was being extracted from them forcefully. You had been considering this on your way back. The heels were rubbing your feet, and after the night in the club, you had a few blisters. Before entering the building where you lived, you simply took them off, not wanting to risk your life on those steep stairs. Jude had sprained her wrist on them once, and thank God it was just her wrist.
Completely lost in your thoughts, in their aggressive waterfall, you didnât even notice someone sitting right by the door to your apartment, leaning against it with their back. You jumped in surprise when Richard sprang to his feet.
Shit.
"Hey!" he exclaimed, clearly happy to see you. You cautiously stepped back a step, likely balancing on the edge of the stairs. You didnât turn around, nervously glancing at the man. "Hey, do you remember me? You're Jude's roommate, right? You definitely remember me."
"I remember," you admitted uncertainty, holding yourself back from taking another step backward. Richard always had that dangerously unpredictable energy. One moment, he could circle around his girlfriend like an attention-hungry kitten, and the next, heâd be throwing plates in the kitchen. Although, theoretically, he had no reason to hurt you, you preferred to remain... cautious.
"That's great. Listen, could you let me in for just a second? I need to talk to her."
You didnât know what to say, how to act. Of course, letting him in was out of the question; you wouldnât do that to your friend. However, you knew that as soon as you opened the door, heâd take advantage of the opportunity and force his way inside. You could step back⌠the real question was whether he would let you.
"Come on..." he pleaded, trying to make a puppy-dog face, which looked downright comical on his stern face. "Please, she doesnât want to see me. I just want to talk, to make things right. Iâve changed, really. I donât know what she told you about me, but half of it probably wasnât even true. Please."
Seeing that you still werenât moving, his features suddenly hardened.
"Just open the door."
You didnât respond.
"Whereâs your key?"
He probably guessed it was in your jacket pocket, and suddenly reached for you.
"Move away, right now!" you hissed, pushing his hand away.
He grabbed your wrist so tightly that a strangled cry of pain escaped you.
You started struggling. You tried to push him away as he rummaged through your pockets one by one, still gripping your hand tightly, preventing you from escaping. A few times, you struck him with a clenched fist, shouting loudly, hoping to wake Jude or one of the neighbors.
Your attempts at defense were in vain. No one came. Richard finally found the key, and once he got what he wanted, he shoved you aside with a scoff.
You didnât even have a chance to try to regain your balance.
It happened so quickly that you didnât even manage to close your eyes, fooling yourself into thinking it might protect you from the pain to come. During the struggle with Richard, you dropped the shoes you were holding, your bare feet slipping off the edge of the step. Your body followed, limp, like a rag doll. In that moment, you wished you were one. Without bones, the sound of them cracking filling your ears.
Without limbs, vulnerable to breaks.
Without real eyes, still covered in the remnants of party makeup.
Beautiful, cold, and empty, as they started to fill with fog.
Forced to look in the direction your neck had twisted.
Dead.Â

"So...wait, you're saying your world has these...rights?"
You nod your head, the king dumbfounded.
He had never heard of such a thing, women and 'slaves' having the same rights a man would. In this world, the one you were summoned to, only the high class had rights - the wealthy could do whatever they wanted, without consequence. But this honestly didn't feel too much different from your previous world, all things considered. In your previous world, you had a 'king' as well. But the people rose up quick, ending the tyrant's reign before it could ever really begin. Only difference was, your world had technology. This new world felt...almost barbaric, in a sense. One full of magic, yet felt 'modern' enough to let you know that the time here was not far off from what you once knew.
The king glanced you once over again, taking in your appearance. Then, he laughs. It was a hearty laugh, one that told you he assumed you were joking. But, in fact, you were far from it.
"Preposterous! Women and slaves are beneath me! Even a 'hero' such as yourself must see the truth, no woman could ever handle such responsibilities, much less handle nothing more than bearing children and tending to their lord's needs!"
You glare at the man, seeing he doesn't realize what's in front of him. He didn't notice the slight feminine tone, the slim fingers - none of your feminine features caught his eye. But then again, when you first appeared to him, you told him you were a man. So how could he tell, when this world's beauty standards already bordered on feminine? In this world of magic and monsters, it seemed that beauty was not as fixed on gender like yours was. You found it quite strange, bordering between relief and concern.
The king smirks, seeing your glare. Oh, he's seen that look before. One of defiance, of rage. He quite enjoyed seeing it, though despite that he assumed you were just passionate about his words. Not once did he think you were going to soon overthrow his rule, to take the spot as the new 'king' and bring about a new age of peace for the kingdom he's destroying.
"Now, young warrior. You were summoned here to stop this little 'revolution'. Are you going to follow my orders, or will I have to send you to the dungeons?"
the king has a large problem. The hero that was summoned thinks slavery is "a bad thing" and women "should have rights"

Ramen & Rain
Katsuki Bakugo x gn Reader
Ramen Date
just a weird fluff Bakugo fic mostly written at 3am. not quite the direction it was intended to go but it still ends ish as planned. mentions of angst, turns into fluff.
âSorry for your breakup,â you say to the messy haired blonde seated next to you at the hero rankings after-party, âare you doing okay?â
âHuh?â he grumbled before remembering the bullshit his PR team spun earlier that week.Â
âOh, that.â He sits uncomfortably, staring down the tablecloth at the tiny high top the two of you were perched at. âUm, that was fake.â
âWait, really?â
âYeah, my PR team thinks itâll humanize me to date likable people so they have me take models and whatever on dates.â He pauses, considering if heâd like to tell you the next part, âand a few times they also did this when I was photographed with one night stands. I guess thatâs not so likable either or something,â he mumbles down at his lap. Â
Your thoughts flash back to every headline youâd read about pro-hero Dynamiteâs intriguing love life. Much to his teamâs credit, you did fall for it.
âSo, you havenât actually dated any of those girls in the pictures?âÂ
âNope,â his finishes his drink, hoping the glass blocked at least some of his blushing face.
âHave you dated anyone?â
âHave you?â he retorts, barely able to make eye contact.
Please say no, he hopes.Â
He tried to ask you out once, in your second year of high school together. But he was going through some things. And you are you. He couldnât imagine you being interested in anything but perfect when itâs what you deserve. One day, he figured, he could give you that. So he waited.
And of course you had no idea he liked you. Not when his way of showing it was hitting you harder while sparing, having higher expectations of you than everyone else, and exploding at you every time you so much as glanced at him (because he thought you caught him staring.)
âWell, there was Shouto in high school,â you begin.
Of course Bakugo knows about this, he hated it.Â
You and Shouto had been best friends since halfway through your first year. So, it didn't surprise too many people in your third year when he asked you to go out with him. Of course you had a massive crush on him for years at that point. He's beautiful, who in your class hadn't been into him?
And it was⌠Cute.Â
While it lasted.Â
You held hands. He walked you to class. The two of you always had meals together, but it felt different once you were officially together. You never kissed or anything but that's okay, it was new.Â
Exactly nine days and four hours is when it all came crashing down.Â
Feeling worked after training, you went to bed early. You'd meet up with your boyfriend in the morning. No big deal.Â
Little did you know, your puppy love relationship was falling apart before your head even hit the pillow.Â
âHey, Icy Hot! What are you doing checking out Ponytail when you're already dating the hottest person in our class?â Bakugo berated Todoroki.Â
Confused, he responded as bluntly as he ever did, âbut y/n isn't the hottest one in our class. Momo is.â
Katsukiâs red eyes pierced through him, clearly he was missing something.Â
âWait, are you not dating y/n??â
âNo, I am.â
â...then what the fuck.â
After much back and forth, it came out that Iida told Todoroki everyone should aspire to date their best friend. He took that to heart and asked you out without considering if he like liked you.Â
He didn't.Â
And he told you that the next morning.
Itâs not Shoutoâs fault his comprehension of human emotion is so limited. This didnât make being broken up with by him any easier though. Everything was matter of fact, no sugar coating.Â
âThanks for letting me know,â you mumbled to your feet, trying to think of any excuse to leave and save yourself the embarrassment of bursting into tears in front of your classmates. His mismatched eyes stared at you, still confused about the whole situation.Â
âI have to go finish some homework now, see ya later.â Turning away, you hope you played it off well enough. No one seemed to notice as you walked heavily through the common space with a face made of stone until you reached the elevator.Â
Bakugo did though, and he was pissed at Todoroki for fumbling so hard that you got hurt. Their already unstable friendship took a massive hit after that. Eventually, after a lot of adjusting, Katsuki reasoned he could be okay with you dating someone else if it meant you were happy (and they were perfect and checked every single box he decided someone would need to in order to be worthy of you.) This wasnât it though.
âI don't mean high school. That one didn't count, â he says, remembering how helpless he felt watching you being heartbroken when you never did anything to deserve it.Â
âOkay, well there wasâŚâ
The girl you were with for a whole month before discovering she was a villain, just using you because she thought she could get top secret information. She didnât.
Then there was the guy you met at a coffee shop who stuck around for a while. He thought you were attractive but didnât want more than sex and wasnât sure how to bring that up. You being a hero was terrifying to him and he thought youâd stop sleeping with him when you realized thatâs all he was there for. You did.Â
And Shinsou, who had the most amicable breakup with. Heâs nocturnal and youâre well, not quite. After not seeing each other for three weeks, you decided your schedules just werenât compatible and called it. No media outlets picked up on it since there was nothing to pick up on.Â
Bakugo shifts uncomfortably in front of you. Brows furrowed and face unreadable to most. A twinge of jealousy overtakes him. Sure, the two of you havenât talked much since graduation, but he still has feelings for you. And hearing about all the losers who had a chance when he never did didnât sit right with him.
On top of that, admittedly, he also feels guilty. Maybe if he'd asked you out all those years ago he could have saved you from this pain. His assumption youâd settle for nothing but perfect had been shattered, leaving him to accept that he shouldnât have left you craving closeness from anyone but him. He should have been there.Â
Heâs here now though. At this point in life, he knows he isnât perfect but he could at least do better than everyone else you mentioned. If you let him.
âYou wanna get out of here?â he asks abruptly.
âWhat?â
âWanna go somewhere else? The food sucks here, thereâs a good ramen shop thatâs open late down the street.âÂ
âYou asking me on a date, Dynamite?â you joke.
âYeah,â he replies dead serious, âI am.â
Suddenly youâre the one feeling flustered. A date with Katsuki Bakugo?Â
After a quick stop at coat check, the two of you are out the door. Running down the marble stairs to the rough sidewalk, his hand lightly around your wrist to guide you. A rain storm earlier left the streets glimmering, neon reflections from the surrounding shops. A few people trickle in and out of businesses in the typically bustling area, but tonight it feels like a ghost town.Â
Then youâre there.
He pulls you through an unassuming door. With a quick wave to the person behind the counter, they informally gesture the two of you towards the small seating area.Â
Sit wherever.
You slide over the cracked upholstery at a table in the corner. The pink sign lighting up the window casts a glow over his face, the warm color suits him.
When you left your place earlier, you never expected to end up on a date. Especially not here. The location being as much of a surprise as his sudden interest.Â
Sure, you always thought he was cute, but you never knew him. He spent all of high school keeping you at armâs length. Then after, youâve spent years basing your assumptions about Bakugo off the headlines youâd read. The dates he went on. Always models and idols. Fancy restaurants, valets, and expensive cars.
But this is real.
Across the table, you watch as he slides his suit jacket off. You hadnât realized how stuffy the atmosphere was earlier until you see him relax, top buttons of his shirt undone and sleeves rolled up. You forgot about the scars.
The woman running the shop approaches to take your order, not bothering to ask him - it appears he gets the same thing every time he comes in. Having been distracted, you quickly pick the first menu item that jumps out to you. She disappears into the kitchen.
âSo, what do you want,â he asks, sitting too casually for the depth of the conversation heâs bringing up. He needs to ask though, otherwise how will he know what to do? âYou told me what didnât work but not what you actually wanted in any of that.â
âI guess I havenât thought about it. Iâve just been working and-â
âBullshit,â direct, but his tone is playful as he flashes a slightly crooked smile at you.
Two bowls of ramen float through the air to your table - likely the quirk of the woman before. Youâre glad for the momentary distraction, giving you time to consider your answer. The food arrived suspiciously fast but with one sip from the oversized spoon, you know itâs amazing.Â
âHoly shit,â you exclaim.Â
âLike Iâd take you somewhere shitty,â he laughs, âstill dodging my question?â
âNo,â you pause, pulling a piece of bok choy from the bowl while you consider, ânot a villain would be nice.â
âBarâs that low, huh?â
â...and being able to spend time together at least once a week would be good.â
âOnly once a week?â he scoffs, âtoo easy.â
âWhat about you?â
He says nothing for a while, chasing a green onion around his spicy ramen with his chopsticks.
âThis is good,â he mumbles suddenly uncharacteristically shy, âlike a real, actual date.â
Looks like you arenât the only one with lowered standards.
âToo easy,â you smile.
If he told you how serious of a relationship he actually wants with you, he might scare you off. This is a great start though.
Abruptly, he changes the topic to hero work. You compare stories, scars.Â
He tells you how he got the small mark on his neck from a villain with a slashing quirk. How he took out a small area of buildings before Bakugo arrived to apprehend him.
You show him a similar scar on your wrist after the same villain escaped prison.Â
The evening passes far too quickly.
As he approaches the counter to pay, you donât miss the exchange between him and the older woman working. She looks overjoyed, saying something while glancing at you in the booth. He smiles awkwardly, his flushed face apparent even in the dim neon lighting.
âAlright, letâs get outta here,â he asserts while grabbing both of your hands to pull you to your feet.
âCan I take you out again?â he asks, as your feet have barely hit the pavement.
âYeah.â
âTomorrow night?â
âPerfect.â

Having dug out the Unfinished Tales to reference a conversation Tolkien wrote between Gandalf and Pippin (but didnât publish) I thought Iâd share it. Gandalf is talking to Pippin about the history of Thorinâs company, hobbits and why he chose Bilbo.
This is evidence for the grand statement I just made about how Bilbo was intended to be a catalyst that changed his society, and that hobbit society was indeed significantly different after his journey, with large social changes occurring between The Hobbit and Fellowship. But itâs also a very funny passage to me so here it is:
âAnd then there was the Shire-folk. I began to have a warm place in my heart for them in the Long Winter, which none of you can remember.
They were very hard put to it then: one of the worst pinches they have been in, dying of cold, and starving in the dreadful dearth that followed. But that was the time to see their courage, and their pity one for another. It was by their pity as much as by their tough uncomplaining courage that they survived. I wanted them still to survive.
(đđđđ. Also the theme of having pity for each other is what redeems both Bilbo and Frodo re: Gollum.)
But I saw that the Westlands were in for another very bad time again, sooner or later, though of quite a different sort: pitiless war.
(This is possibly one reason why this passage didnât make it to publication - Gandalf shouldnât have had this much foreknowledge of the upcoming war of the ring.)
To come through that I thought they would need something more than they now had. It is not easy to say what. Well, they would want to know a bit more, understand a bit clearer what it was all about, and where they stood.
(Itâs also explaining that Bilboâs role in Thorinâs company was predetermined both by a more omnipotent Gandalf and by Fate; that Gandalf selected Bilbo to be a social catalyst, to return and provoke hobbit society into a more adaptable, resilient state; therefore increasing their chances of surviving.)
They had begun to forget: forget their own beginnings and legends, forget what little they had known about the greatness of the world. It was not yet gone, but it was getting buried: the memory of the high and the perilous. But you cannot teach that sort of thing to a whole people quickly. There was not time.
(Thus Bilbo was supposed to be changed, and return changed by his journey, to teach his people.)
And anyway you must begin at some point, with some one person. I dare say he was âchosenâ and I was only chosen to choose him; but I picked out Bilbo.â
âNow that is just what I want to know,â said Peregrin. âWhy did you do that?â
âHow would you select any one Hobbit for such a purpose?â said Gandalf. âI had not time to sort them all out;
(He is SO funny)
but I knew the Shire very well by that time, although when I met Thorin I had been away for more than twenty years on less pleasant business. So naturally thinking over the Hobbits that I knew, I said to myself: âI want a dash of the Tookâ (but not too much, Master Peregrin)
(This is brilliant we are always BODYING pippin constantly. NOT TOO MUCH TOOK đ. We were ROBBED not having this in canon )
âand I want a good foundation of the stolider sort, a Baggins perhaps.â That pointed at once to Bilbo.
(Eugenics! Observing them like laboratory mouse lines! Call him a Charles River BILB/o the way youâre genotyping these poor little bastards for your purposes)
And I had known him once very well, almost up to his coming of age, better than he knew me.
(??? Hiding in the bushes spying or)
I liked him then. And now I found that he was âunattachedâ â to jump on again, for of course I did not know all this until I went back to the Shire. I learned that he had never married. I thought that odd, though I guessed why it was; and the reason that I guessed was not the one that most of the Hobbits gave me: that he had early been left very well off and his own master.
(Was it cos heâs gay as fuck, Gandalf)
No, I guessed that he wanted to remain âunattachedâ for some reason deep down which he did not understand himself â or would not acknowledge, for it alarmed him.
(I 100% now and for always love a narrator in a constant state of Just Fucking Lies To Everyone All The Time, Giving Us Nothing, Acknowledging Nothing Including Himself. NOPE NOT PROCESSING ANYTHING TODAY THANKS. WEâRE CLOSED. COME BACK TOMORROW. just A Massive Liar about everything and for what!!! Bilbo Baggins my beloved you were born wrong.)
He wanted, all the same, to be free to go when the chance came, or he had made up his courage. I remembered how he used to pester me with questions when he was a youngster about the Hobbits that had occasionally âgone off â, as they said in the Shire. There were at least two of his uncles on the Took side that had done so.â
You can see why I love this! And I can see why Tolkien didnât include it, too. Still very fun passage and near enough to canon to be used if you ever want to.
#there is a joke here I will explain#Charles river breed laboratory mouse lines of which BALB/c is one of the most prolific in the world#all BALB/c mice are basically clones#đ they look like this thatâs the mouse . theyâre inbred white mice of over 100 years of inbreeding which is an unspeakable number#of mouse generations. thatâs The Mouse of a lot of laboratory research.#which I did VERY briefly as a baby lab biologist a million years ago. the trick is to work in every scientific discipline so you can make#jokes like this which will hurt one (1) mutual.#also I am tagging this#weasel heart in defiance#just so I can keep it together for purposes of - no reason.#no reason.

Back To You - Part 2 | Sam Carpenter
Pairing: Sam Carpenter x reader
Warnings: mentions of violence, death, blood, injuries, and swearing
Summary: When Sam left after turning eighteen, you were devastated. Youâd been in love with her since you were kids and her leaving meant you never got to tell her how you truly felt.
Fast forward a couple of years, Tara gets attacked and Sam returns. . .
Previous Part | Next Part | Masterlist
________________________________________________
Samâs words die in the back of her throat when she sees me and for a moment we just stare at each other.
Itâs been five years since we last saw each other, and even though I would still recognize her anywhere, sheâs changed a lot.
Sheâs no longer a troubled teenager who relies on drugs and petty crime to feel good. No, sheâs all grown up now, like me, and despite her tired and worry filled eyes she looks healthy. She looks good in her green jacket and with her hair up in a claw clip.
A wave of bitterness washes over me and I have half a mind to turn back around and walk out of the room again.
She came back for Tara, but she didnât come back for me when I needed her the most.
I know itâs unfair to compare the two situations, I wasnât attacked by a psycho, but I did almost die along with my parents.
âY/N.â Her voice is soft, unlike the last time I heard it when she screamed at me to stop calling her.
I swallow harshly and try to keep any emotions off my face. âHello, Sam.â
The twins share a confused look, and Wes and Amber watch Tara to see how sheâs reacting to this unexpected reunion.
âYouâre hurt.â She gets up from my chair next to the bed and takes a hesitant step toward me. âTara said you were stabbed saving her.â I nod and when she takes another step forward, I instinctively take a step back. She freezes and something like hurt flits across her face.
It makes my insides clench up because I never thought Iâd ever be the reason for that look on her face, but then again, sheâs hurt me so much in the past, I think stepping back because I donât want to be hugged or touched by her seems like a normal reaction.
She goes to say something, her brown eyes soft and pleading, but then the door opens and in steps a guy I donât recognize.
âSam do you want anything from theâ Oh, hello,â he smiles when he sees me, oblivious to the tension in the room. âI donât believe weâve met yet. Iâm Richie, Samâs boyfriend.â
My heart drops. Boyfriend. Right.
I force myself not to look at Sam and shake his hand when he offers it to me. âY/N. Iâm. . .â Samâs best friend? No, not anymore. âIâm Taraâs friend.â
His smile brightens and he says, âAh yes, youâre the one who saved her, right?â
âYeah, thatâs me,â I say quietly, shifting my arm in the sling.
âItâs nice to meet you,â he continues. âWhat you did is very impressive. Not many people would have tackled a psychotic killer with a knife.â
My gaze darts to Sam for a split second. Sheâs sat back down next to Tara again, but her eyes havenât left me. Thereâs now a guilty look on her face and when she realizes Iâm looking at her, she quickly averts her eyes and buries her hands in her lap.
âYes, well, itâs not like I had a choice,â I snap. I acted because I knew if I didnât, Tara would get killed. I didnât do it to come off as braver or heroic, and something about being praised for it rubs me the wrong way.
Richieâs eyes widen and he quickly tries to back-pedal. âNo, of course not. I understand. Iâm just sayingââ
I clench my jaw and lift a hand to stop him âSave it. I donât care.â
Technically, heâs done nothing wrong, but I already donât like him and itâs not because heâs Samâs boyfriend. No, thatâs not the reason. Not at all.
âY/N!â
Oh hell no.
âWhat, Sam?â I ask, pinning her down with a challenging glare.
She flinches and frowns. Iâve never, never, talked to her like this before.
âIââ
Sheâs once again interrupted just like when Richie entered the room. This time, however, itâs by Amber who speaks up with a sheepish smile on her face. âGuys, Tara is really tired. Maybe we should give her some space.â
I stop glaring at Sam and look at Tara. She does look pretty tired. Her eyes are glassy and it looks like every breath she takes is exhausting.
The twins and Wes agree, leaving with Amber after Amber gives Tara a hug. Sam gets up as well, but Tara asks her to stay and since I promised I wouldnât leave until Ghostface is caught, I stay as well.
Richie looks back and forth between Sam and me, now no longer oblivious to the tension, before taking a seat on the chair in the corner.
Of course heâs staying, too. For fuckâs sake. . .
âY/N?â
âYeah?â I ignore Sam whoâs once again looking at me, and focus on Tara.
âDo you still have my inhaler?â she asks and I shake my head.
âNo, Iâm sorry. I dropped it in your driveway, but I can go and get it if you want,â I offer.
No matter what terms Sam and I are on, I know she wonât let anything happen to Tara if Iâm not here, and if Tara wants me to go and get it, Iâll go.
Leaving will also give them a chance to catch up properly and while Iâm out, I can go home and take a quick shower.
Thereâs still some dried blood in my hair that I want to get rid of and Iâm itching to get out of the shirt the hospital gave me after they cut mine off me.
âPlease. . .â
I smile reassuringly and squeeze Taraâs uninjured leg over the comforter. âOkay. Iâll be back soon.â My face hardens and I look at Sam, shooting her a pointed look.
You better keep her safe. . .
She nods and straightens up a little. I turn and leave before she can try and start another conversation. On my way out, I spare one last glance at Richie who smiles tentatively and waves.
Moron.
Eleven years ago
I jump on my bed, face first, and groan into the pillow. Todayâs been a long day.
I didnât have school because weâre on winter break, but hockey practice is still being held and todayâs practice was particularly long and grueling.
My dad even laughed at how tired I looked after picking me up, and my mom made sure I had an extra large serving of dinner.
Now, I just want to sleep. Iâve eaten and showered, and Iâm too tired to watch a movie on my laptop like I normally would. So, I wiggle around in an attempt to get under the comforter without getting up.
A moment later though, I stop at the familiar sound of someone tapping on my window. Thereâs only one person who climbs the tree outside my window to sneak into my room.
âItâs open,â I mumble with a smile on my face. I donât bother getting up, or even turning around because I know sheâll join me on the bed in a few seconds anyway.
The window slides open and thereâs some shuffling before her feet land on my floor. She shuts the window again, and my smile widens because any moment now sheâll jump on the bed.
I wait, and wait, but nothing happens.
âSam?â
No answer.
My smile dims and when I hear a sniffle, I frown. I finally turn around and the sight that greets me makes me curse myself for not turning around earlier.
Standing in the middle of my room in nothing but a tank top and sweatpants is Sam. Sheâs shivering and has goosebumps all over her body, but thatâs not what concerns me the most. No, what concerns me the most are the tears that are streaming down her face.
âSam?â Alarmed, I shuffle off the bed and cup her cheeks, forcing her to look at me. âWhatâs wrong?â
Her brown eyes are red rimmed and her bottom lip quivers. Once again though, she doesnât answer. Instead, she rushes forward and wraps her arms around my waist.
âHey. . .â I return the hug and bring one hand up to the back of her head when she pushes her face against the side of my neck. âWhatâs wrong?â
She still doesnât answer, so I figure she doesnât want to talk about it.
What going on? Did she have a fight with Tara, or her mom?
We continue hugging without saying anything, just basking in each otherâs company until Sam starts shivering.
âSammy,â I try to break our hug, but she whines and claws at my back to keep me close. âYouâre freezing.â
âI donât care,â she whispers, and the defeat in her voices makes my heart hurt.
âBut I do,â I argue softly, reaching behind me to unclasp her arms from around me. âHere, take this.â I take off my hoodie and slip it over her head. âThere, much better.â I make sure it fits properly, un-bunching the bottom and fidgeting with the too-long sleeves before pulling her over to the bed.
She wordlessly slips under the covers and drags me down with her, cuddling up to me as soon as Iâm within reach.
She stopped crying a while ago, but sheâs obviously still feeling vulnerable, so I pull her closer and run my hand up and down her back.
This isnât the first time weâve found ourselves in this position, but it feels different than any other times before. Something has changed and I have yet to find out what it is.
At some point, I must have fallen asleep because the next time I open my eyes, itâs seven in the morning. I stretch and turn to maybe get some more sleep, but then I realize the bed next to me is empty.
âSam?â I ask, but Sam is gone. The window is open and the spot next to me is still warm, so it canât have been long since she left.
Present
I step out of the elevator and greet Deputy Vinson and a nurse who are chatting at the nursesâ station.
They nod and smile in greeting before getting back to their conversation, and I make my way to Taraâs room.
I feel much better now, having showered and changed into a new set of clothes. I took a cab from the hospital to Taraâs, grabbed her inhaler, and then drove my car back to my own apartment.
I also called Liam and Paige, updating them on the situation and telling them about Samâs unexpected appearance.
They know how I felt about her in high school since the three of us have been friends since middle school. They offered to come to the hospital and act as a kind of buffer between Sam and me, but I obviously declined.
Iâm more than capable of dealing with Samâs presence, even if dealing with it is simply ignoring her or interacting with her as little as possible. She broke my heart a long time ago and even though Iâd be lying if I said I was over it, I know itâs best to just stay away from her.
Someone rounding the corner and crashing into me at full speed rips me out of my thoughts. I stumble slightly and grasp at the wall to stop us from going down together.
âHey! Watch whereââ Crap. So much for staying away.
My mouth snaps shut when I realize who ran into me, and then my eyes widen when I see the panicked look on her face.
âWhatâs going on?â
Sam clings to me and tries to push me back, away from where she just came from, and for a moment all the hurt, anger, and despair sheâs caused is forgotten.
âSomebody tried to kill me in the break room!â she cries and without thinking, I wrap my arm that is not in the sling around her and pull her closer.
âWhat?!â
Our shouting alerts Deputy Vinson, who comes running over with his gun in hand.
âIn the break room you say?â he asks, and Sam nods frantically. Without another word, he dashes off, gun raised and shoulders tense.
âAre you hurt?â I ask, breathless even though Samâs the one who literally just fought off the killer. Her panicked eyes dart around the place, still sensing danger in every shadow, so I tighten my grip on her and repeat myself. âSam, are you hurt?â
She finally looks at me and shakes her head, panting. âN-No, Iâm okay.â
âAre you sure?â I look her over but she seems to be telling the truth because I canât spot anything amiss except maybe her disheveled hair which is no longer in its claw clip. Sheâs also taken her jacket off and is now only wearing a white t shirt.
She nods again which causes a few strands of hair to fall in her face. I instinctively reach up and tuck a piece behind her ear only to freeze a heartbeat later when my knuckles brush against her cheek.
What am I doing?
Sam is frozen as well and her brown eyes are darting all over my face, a storm of emotions raging in their depths.
I clear my throat and blink rapidly, stepping back. It makes her hands drop off my chest and I hate how I miss the warmth of her palms through my sweater.
âY/N. . .â
âSam!â Richie comes rushing around the corner and when he spots us heâs quick to pull Sam into a hug. âOh my God, are you okay? Deputy Vinson just told me what happened.â
âIâ Yeah, Iâm okay.â Sam eyes linger on me and for a moment an emotion I canât quite pinpoint flickers across her face. Then, however, she turns her attention to Richie and I look away when she lets him kiss her softly.
âGood. I was so worried,â he mumbles and if the kiss wasnât too much for me already, his sickeningly sweet tone definitely is. I clench my jaw and brush past them, absolutely hating the hurt that settles on my chest and makes it hard for me to breathe.
Focus, Y/N. Tara needs you.

This oneâs a little bit shorter than the last, but I had to get some of the backstory stuff out of the way before the story picks up properly.

Would you love me if I were a worm?
Sylus x gn reader | A stupid, short drabble that got stuck in my head while peeling potatoes yesterday, no warnings
âSylus, would you love me if I were a worm?â
Sylus doesnât even look up from the book heâs reading, sprawled on one of the leather couches in his library, the full red moon spilling through the windows and blanketing him in a softly sinister light. âYes.â
You lift your head and scowl at him from your position stretched out along his long body, hands folded under your chin, resting on his firm stomach.
âYouâre not taking the question seriously.â
He lifts a dark silver eyebrow, eyes still not lifting from his book, the gold-rimmed reading glasses heâs wearing glinting in the warm light from the Tiffany lamp next to the couch. âAnd how did you arrive at that conclusion?â
âIf you had actually properly considered it, you would have taken a little more time to answer.â
He finally deigns to look at you over the rims of his glasses. âI gave it the exact amount of attention that such a question deserves.â
âWhy doesnât it deserve more attention? I want to know your answer.â
âAnd I gave you my answer.â He returns to his book. Itâs some pretentious title, about the sociology of ingroups and outgroups, the banality of evil.
âHow can I take your answer seriously if you donât think about it properly?â
He sighs. Looks over his glasses at you again. âYouâve been spending too much time with the twins.â
You sit up, leaning against the armrest of the couch opposite of Sylus. He frowns as you move away. âI donât think I spend enough time with them, actually. Theyâre hilarious.â
His frown deepens. âIâm hilarious.â
âNo, youâre a pretentious edgelord who wonât properly consider my question.â
âYou speak so sweetly to the twins. Whereâs that honey when you speak to me?â
âHoneypotâs empty until you tell me why youâd love me if I were a worm.â You prod his thigh with your bare foot.
He sighs again, sets the book on the side table. He takes your foot in his hands and begins to rub it, thumbs gently pressing into your arch. You suppress a moan.
âIâd love you if you were a worm because even as a worm, you are still you. Iâd love you in any universe, in any world, in any timeline, in any form.â
You stare at him for a moment. âNow I feel bad about being mean to you.â
âAs you should,â he gloats. âHow will you make it up to me?â
âNo, no. Iâm not done.â He continues to caress your foot, one hand drifting up to your ankle, circling it between his thumb and forefinger. âYou may love me as a worm, but what would you do with me? And would you seek out company in other people, since I couldnât provide it to you as a little wiggly worm?â
âI would construct the most extravagant terrarium with all of the most luxurious provisions that a little wormâs heart could desire.â He pauses. âIâd also have to construct some sort of grate to protect you from Mephisto.â
You shudder, thinking about what it would be like to be a worm facing down Mephistoâs ruby stare. âIâd probably just be happy in some dirt,â you say, giving him your other foot. He takes the hint and begins to rub it too.
âTch. My worm deserves only the finest in compost and enrichment activities in their terrarium. I wouldnât be happy with just giving you some dirt.â
âOf course, and we must keep his royal snobness happy.â
âSee? This is why I love you,â he smiles, just a little. âEven though your tongue is so sharp with me.â
âYouâre avoiding the question about seeking other company,â you say, sinking lower into the couch as you enjoy the foot massage.
âWhatâs the point in answering what is clearly a trick question? You will not be turned into a worm. This whole discussion is a waste of time we could spend doing more interesting things.â He gives you an exaggeratedly lascivious once-over.
âI could be turned into a worm! Modified protocores have resulted in weirder shit happening!â
Sylus sighs yet again in resignation.
âI would miss your human company terribly, but thereâs no replacing you,â he says smoothly.
You scowl at him again. âThat doesnât answer the question.â
âDarling, I was fine with my own company until you came into my life. I was fine with my own hand until you came into my life. Iâd miss your company, and your sharp tongue, and your blowââ
You jerk one of your feet out of his hands and prod him in his stupid sexy abs. âOkay, okay. I get it.â
âI donât think you do,â he says, sliding out from under you, dropping to his knees on the plush rug in front of you. He lifts one of your legs over his broad shoulder. âI think a demonstration is in order, of all the things Iâll miss that are irreplaceable, should the unthinkable happen and your lovely human form is reduced to that of a worm. Iâll start.â He lifts your other leg over his shoulder and looks up at you smugly.
You look down at him, heart so full with how much you love him that it hurts. âPromise youâre not lying?â
âWhen have I ever lied to you, beloved?â
You tilt your head. You think he really would love you if you were a worm.
âIâd love you if you were a worm too, Sy.â
âOh good, I can stop losing sleep at night,â he says, voice dripping sarcasm. You punish him by tightening your thighs, squishing his handsome face between your knees.
He laughs a little breathlessly. âIf youâre trying to encourage me, itâs working, kitten.â
You laugh and release him. âDeviant,â you say affectionately.
âYour deviant,â he says, leaning forward, big palms gliding up your thighs. âWhether youâre a human or a worm, that wonât change.â

Synastry observations based on personal experience, part 6:
(18+!!)
(Back after a year! Lolđđ)
Moon conjunct mars: can be one sided asfuhck. Iâve seen it play out. Fully accepting that deeply personal intimacy of having someoneâs sex aspecting your deepest emotions and/or the other way around is a sort of intimacy that some people just.. donâtâŚ. want with that other person. This comes as a shocker because to most people, having a synastry aspect automatically means you have to like that with the other person, but Some people are just not into the other person like that! Or have trouble with intimacy. And even though the very primal emotional bridge between (possible) intensity of emotions and (possible) intensity of sexuality really âclicksâ and hits like no other, it doesnât mean that the emotions or sexuality of both of the people will be intense within themselves⌠or that they will be seen in the same way. Many times Iâve seen this aspect play out in two people who worked really well together, were natural kissers and such, had almost iconically amazing fullfilling sex together, but one person wanted to marry and move into the other person and the other person simply did not want that, got the ick maybe, or simply closed themselves off from that meaning to the connection that one party attached to it but they themselves could not get in touch with, and either abused that power dynamic as much as they could or they ran away. Meanwhile thatother person, and Iâve seen both the moon and the mars person in that situation, is left completely addicted and insecure and an unstable mess because of this, because this aspects didnât cause them so much to be in love, it caused them to have an addiction to this perfectly fullfilling passion and intimacy that they fundamentally lack in their life. They wanted to marry this person because of that. A friend (the mars person) of mine once puked when they saw their recent mars-conjunct-moon-synastey ex (it was a 1,5 month relationship) walk into a room. He later discovered that for some reason, that extremely intense feeling heartbreak didnât really have anything to do with her, but more about the affection he lacked from an absent parent in his childhood, and the (obvious to everyone else) fact that he was bordering on a complete burn-out. He desperately needed that dopamine and those endorphins. Meanwhile the moon person was nowhere near in the headspace to have that kind of emotional intimacy so fast in her 1st relationship, so she started finding him less and less attractive, and then it was over. I once had an international student (moon) I think fall in love with me (and later stalk me) after 2 dates. He was a lonely international student in this Nordic country and his mother was sick in Egypt. We could not hold an interesting conversation on our own if we tried, but we were -very good kissers-and the almost-sex was extremely good. I didnât want to cross that line, because for lack of better words I felt like it would go on to mean too much, be too emotional and too intimate and the thought crossing that border with him gave me the ick/ a fight or flight response, like I would just let this man be wayy too intimate with me if it happened, so I cut it off đ¤ˇââď¸ All the hormones of interpreting yourself to be totally âin loveâ are there in the synastry, but itâs not *really* that, and most people in the sorry position even secretely know that, even though itâs confusing because they forever remain adamant that there here was something bomb in their connection.. because there was. But imagine: the moon feels emotionally hit in their core by marsâs⌠sexuality/attractiveness. Mars sees the deepest inner emotions of the moon and feels⌠turned on. You see where Iâm going with this? The intensity and intimacy is great, but for a real love connection you need synastry on things that lead to mental, spiritual and emotional connectivity too. Can you even have a good conversation with this person for longer than 25 minutes? Do you even.. care about them? and vice versa? Would you love them if they were a worm? I have even more stories but theyâre for another time đââď¸
Moon trine mars: so. This one is kind of different. What do I mean? Well I believe that in synastry aspects, planetary influence comes to exist in the context of the aspect. Mars conjunct a planet will get all of mars. Mars square a planet will get the worst/most challenging side of mars (brought out by both). Mars opposite will get the antihero kind of mars -the conjunct mars on a possible (and needed) character delevopment journey if you will- and mars trine and sextile will get the harmonious benific, kind of âangelicâ sides of mars. He becomes the Aiden from Sex And The City, the soft woodchipper. This mars is in relation to the moon person a 10th house oriented, responsibility taking man who makes you laugh in the form of making you smile. The moon person becomes enamored with the mars personâs standing for something, his way of solving problems, overcoming obstacles, his professionality and his energetic form of taking action. The mars here becomes the kind of mars that is serious about protecting and heartily keeping what he feels is hitting his mars, instead of fighting with it or having sex with it necessarily. The moonâs emotional being becomes like his healthy objective, that he will protect and will fight/work himself up for in a way that he can control. A trine is harmonious which is kind of how youâll see the mars person get into that civilised and gentlemanly role (to the emotions of the!!đ) moon partner. Where mars squaring the moon is like a mean alcoholic to the moon, the mars trining the moon will be a driven, shaved man in a suit or a spencer, kissing his wife goodbye before going to work. The moon in this aspect is different too: like water, the moons energy decides to flow depending on the factors and tides of the environment: If the moon has no reason to feel stabbed all the time, the moon wonât act overly sensitive or insecure or reactive to every little thing. Being shown the harmonious and safe/secure part of such a powerful planet like mars, the moon person will let their guard down big time. Typically, in this aspect, the moon person opens up, becomes very emotionally comfortable and shows their real and raw private selves to the mars person in a way that even surprises the mars person. There will be lots of oohs and aahs from the mars person who is *absolutely thrilled* to discover that the moon person is actually way softer than they come across in their personality, or more insecure than they wear on their sleeve, or are actually way weirder than anyone would expect. This is like an emotional theme in the relationship for mars. Granted to mars, it actually is a kind of odd way of special, because Real selves are often only shown to others in despair, crisis, moments of survival, very few deep talks, or during sex, but here the moon person is comfortable being their quirky and complete and utter selves with the mars person just during âdaylightâ so to speak, as if they were alone in their room doing a talk show monologue in the mirror. Itâs because mars made themselves this safe haven but is also a good reason to get excited and happy. So this aspect isnât so much about physical/primary (so sexual attraction) passionate intimacy as you see, it becomes a personality thing of more mental and earthy(?) substance imo. In couples this aspect creates a forever-kind of âfondnessâ of each other. In this relationship itâs the sex that becomes the highest feat of romantic bonding, not commitment to each other or affirming affection like with the conjunct or the square, which needs those components to make or strengthen the connection as a romantic one.
Mars conjunct mercury: best friends aspect! Being able to talk for hours, do any activity together, spend an entire day doing stuff together or going to a daylong event with just the two of you without it ever being awkward. Being able to do groceries together for a pregame with each other before going to do an activity that youâll also be doing together. Energy, jokes, and things to talk about never run out. Marsâs energy lets mercuryâs thoughts and mind race through multiple subjects and important comments at once, and mercuryâs thoughts excite slash fire up marsâs energy. Their response becomes fuel for mercury again and so fort. I know two best friends who have this in double whammy almost exact and they are *always* together. Like in the same day, they would hang out, go to do something else/hang out with someone else, then go hang out with each other again, then in the evening one would visit the other at work. I have this aspect with one good friend that I can talk for hours with. Catching up is never awkward and we constantly learn from each other, plus weâre interested in the same things, because his mind/daily thoughts/the things he pays attention to and tells me (his mercury), fires me up and consistently happens to catch my fixation (mars). And what I *do* in my life, the things that were motivation by nature of taking action, triggers his insight! Isnât that the perfect combination? This aspect makes you very good and close friends, but this alone doesnât grant an emotional bond. Those two best friends I talked about lacked in moon connections, so they kept surprisingly much of their feelings and what went on in their life/emotional world private from one another, including crushes they had on mutual friends đ like how was that possible?
Moon square moon: a link is a link, an attachment is an attachment, so moon square moon is that too. You will âseeâ each other for who that person emotionally is from the inside. You will acknowledge it, you can even understand it, but trying to emotionally ârelateâ or connect to the otherâs emotional world causes a short-circuit. This sounds like a finished deal, and marriage it often is. This aspect imo means kind of sacrifing a part of crucial understanding of the other partner. But there is another important part: some people do not have moon to moon aspects in their partnerships. Some people can connect with a moon through their sun mercury venus and mars for example, but not be able to deeply feel the other person next to them with their own moon, like whatâs possible in a moon to moon aspect. With moon square moon, the two people deeply *see* each other. Itâs hard not to because the friction of the square makes them very neon noticable to each other. One moon person might not be able to touch or soothe the other moon person from and with their own emotional angle, because through the square it will inherently cause a (n immediate often) frictive disconnect, but their presence will be enough. They will learn from each other and with enough respect for the other, (seriously) they will be able to teach themselves how to manually get their moons to relate, by in their empathy intuitively touching and patting to learn what the other person feels, and sleutelingen on their own emotional patterns. With the man I had this with. I completely saw and understood how he was. We, to each otherâs emotional automatic ways of thinking, understood each other, but could never relate, so in our most intimate conversations we saw each other raw, but were also like.. damn,, you live like this? you do you! đ
Male Venus conjunct womanâs moon, but the man has venus square moon natal: so this is really too specific, I know, itâs from my personal life, but the observation is such an almost lawful rule that it needs to be said. So the man has a problem with women in a romantic or otherwise emotionally intimate sense. He either sees them as charmless but safe, emotional, and boring âkinâ, who fullfills his emotional needs but in a way that cannot fullfill his romantic wants, because they fundamentally clash, or he sees them as these charming, pretty, sexy sensual creative people or muses that fullfill his wants and desires, but cannot fullfill his emotional needs because they fundamentally do not mesh/are able to âmeltâ with each other. So men with this aspect are doomed to have a lonely romantic life where they deeply hurt a lot of women but in the long run also themselves. This is ofc unless the man is capable of self reflection and is willing to do the work and *respect* the challenge that squares require, but since misogyny is a thing that challenge and perceived radically different worldview of the woman practically never gets respected, found interesting/compelling enough for the man to study, or romanticised like the way in which women will handle a natal moon square mars for example. BUT! If a womanâs moon conjuncts that squared venus, they kind of crack the code in a weird sense!? And become sort of âthe only woman that can tame this man blabla that he actually respectsâ. Because the woman becomes like a domineering mother to him. In his moon square/battle/tension her moon, so where his emotional âneedsâ are challenged by another personâs needs, his moon yields to the womanâs moon because his venus is enamored by the womanâs moon emotional world. You will get two people who are weirdly intimate friends, because both square moons emotionally âacknowlegdeâ each otherâs emotional life and wavelength, in a kind of bizarre to witness way that will have the woman wear the pants and the often so misogynistic and macho guy follow her and her needs around like a (doggo)đ, acting like each otherâs bf/gf, but sitting too close to each other?? Kissing? The thought of having s**?? Will make them revolt. From an astrological standpoint, this may be the most significant planetary relationship with a woman that this man will ever have in his life.
A womanâs venus conjunct that sort of manâs moon I have never seen, only conjunct other planets, but I imagine it would be the same but the other way around at the same time. I think she would be only possible romantically intimate partner for the man, the only girlfriend to exist, only girl that he can wholeheartedly register as âgirlfriendâ, who will hold that *romantic* muse place forever, the only one to forever fullfill his emotional needs like a romantic partner does and can, but he doesnât like her as a person, he couldnât be friends with her, canât talk with her, was never even his type, wants to cheat on her, canât admire her really. This female venus is the sexual but disrespected girlfriend to the female moonâs sexless but elevated wife. If that man ruled the world and had all the money and the woman who marries him would win the universe, these were both equally bad but extremley solid places you would want to be in, because youâd be one of the only two women that he will ever seriously consider in his life.
Venus square jupiter: I have this with almost every man I get involved with, because their venus is in that way also conjuncting my scorpio sun and mercury. Iâve found with these people that they are confused if they should be charmed by the grand/optimistic/philosophical side of me, or cringe. Either way they are overwhelmed. Venus in crush-mode will be especially interested in jupiters views and opinions and outlook on situations and jupiter is enthusiastic about the romantic muse that they see in venus and become a kind of a philosophical rant-y person near them, in a good way, because they see venus as an equally inspiring and interesting and beautiful (big ideas and emotions) creative peer of their outlook on life. Venus listens and is in awe. Jupiter is like a positive-energy bomber to venus and venus can be confused, overwhelmed, but gets all the butterflies and wants to be swept in. This is an aspect where the other knows or can relate to what the other is feeling the least, because jupiter is making venus live in their own world and venus is in their head thinking out loud. Astrologers say this easily dies out because of it, like an inflated balloon, but I donât agree. Donât let your relationship completely ride on this aspect alone and youâll be fine and it wonât end with a big bang, but stay flickering like smoldering fire like any other venus or jupiter aspect.
Saturn conjunct moon: saturn wants to snatch moon off the market and moon is like âyeesssssâ
Mars overlaying 8th house: itâs true what they say⌠i wonât elaborate đśâđŤď¸ just kidding I will of course. Having been the 8th house person, itâs actually very straightforward: whenever we talked about serious matters like trauma, (lost) finances, our heritage, and our secrets, fears, thatâs when I became most attracted to his masculine/sexual side. Those were the moments I would find myself like âdaymâ, just like a 7th house having mars overlay there would have that during moments of romance and partnership
Moon opposite mars: moon opposite mars is almost funny because mars doesnât want to be in this situation and moon doesnât like the fact that it exists at all. I feel like itâs a karmic aspect for mars and somewhat for the moon. Moon will feel every single jab but after will think: what even was that. Even typing this synastry aspect out is making me laugh. Itâs moon doing what? Opposing. Oh god. And the lucky planet itâs being opposed is⌠mars đđ¤Śââď¸đ¤Śââď¸! Imagine the moon going like: âf*ck you! And you, and you, and you,â and then pointing to mars âand ESPECIALLY you!â Mars says: âwhat are you saying f*ck me for?â turns around, looks at moon, boom, falls in love. The intrigue in this aspect lies in how foreign these people are to each other. (??) This aspect is an up and down and up and down one, because to have the intimacy that they both desire, they have to do the work and understanding to become closer and win each otherâs trust. Mars is challenged to channel powerful frictive energy from the fixation that the opposition creates, into creating an environment that caters to the moonâs emotional needs. It challenges itself to encompass all of marsâs characteristics in a hyperaware manner, and thatâs one of the reasons he comes to have like âmultiple personalitiesâ in this aspect. It doesnât help that mars always manages to come across the wrong way, can hurt the moon unintentionally, but can fight with the moon when aggravated by her opposing nature, can come across too sexual and disrespectful by the moon person when they intensely show their attraction to the moon. When mars tries to be nice, it doesnât come natural for them to imagine what the completely opposite person would want. When It feels very deep in a way that the moon isnât really easy sex for mars. Goodwill can make or break this aspect. I feel like this can either be one of the most pain-in-your-stomach disrespectful aspects, or the sweetest and most genuine and emotionally intimate aspect. Iâve seen men describe it as âdeerâ.
A little story I wanted to share: an astrologer on 27th november 2023 gifted me a moon badge on tumblr and I only opened it on 21th november 2024, because I thought it the little pop-up present on my home page was a tumblr advert 𼲠I almost cried because it was such a lovely present around my birthday and as it goes I didnât say thank you or acknowledged it for a year even though it was an awfully sweet gesture and I really appreciate her đŠˇđŠˇđŠˇđŠˇđŠˇđŠˇđŠˇđŠˇâ¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸

lmao this is my first time giving a request. Could you maybe do dick Grayson head cannons?
Most of these hdc come from my little brain that I thought fit Dick in general, itâs not based on stuff (some of them are but not all) if ppl agree or donât agree, I couldnât care less honestly. Also thanks for the request anon, hope you like it! đŤś
I know I write him as a little goofy goober but he tends to play up this character so that he doesnât have to open up about anything. Is it foolproof? Not entirely and it solely depends on the person and their relationship to him, those of whom that pick up what heâs putting down, and those (you) who can easily see through this facade and know something is up.
Heâs more often than not the type who will become more affectionate in private where itâs just you, him and Hayley. Dick doesnât need anybody else other then you two, his confidants as he so playfully called you both one day, and heâs more then content then heâs ever been.
Older sibling syndrome is strong in this boy.
Foot wars are a common occurrence in your shared apartment as you push against the others foot with your own to see whoâs going to be victorious, only for you to accidentally smack him in the face with your foot and the foot war becomes ten times worse, seeing as how as Dick often wins them more then you did.
He will never stop feeling guilty about Jasonâs death. Never. That boy who was filled with love and life and claimed that being robin was magic was still within Jason somewhere, dick just knows this to be true, even if Jason loves to claims that that little kid was gone.
And while heâs glad that Jason is back in his life, dick couldnât help but feel as though he couldâve done better by him at times, holding onto that guilt and shame for not being their for his brother that still killed him inside to this day whenever he saw Jason laugh and or smile at something. It hurts but Dick will never stop being in Jasonâs corner, not once. If Gotham was against Jason then Dick will gladly be by Jasonâs side, to show that his allegiance to his brother would outweigh a lot of things.
(Iâm so normal about dick and Jason being brothers canât you tell 𼲠leave me here and be delusional)
The same applies to Damian also, which is why your mostly acquainted with both Jason and Damian in comparison to the rest of his family because they often come over by pure coincidence, or because dick dragged them by their ears with a smile on his face.
Insists that you cling onto his legs while he does pull ups and or sit on his back while he does push ups as he lets you count.
Complains to you when he looses the nightwing look alike contest, and to Jason no less, which no one that knows him personally allows him to live down.
They (Tim and Stephanie) even make memes out of it.
Has Hayley as his Lock Screen, you as his Home Screen. Both wearing cute matching pyjamas. So when heâs on his phone people think heâs smiling at his picture of Hayley -which is true- but heâs also smiling at the picture of you also.
His family pester him about you a lot, even Bruce asks when heâs going to meet you, claiming heâs not going to get any younger should Dick hold back on introducing you to him.
Even Alfred gets in on this as well but Dick always has an excuse locked and loaded when these questions are asked, but even he knows that Bruce knows that itâs all bullshit, however he doesnât say anything outright incase Dick didnât feel comfortable introducing you to them yet.
Wears only boxers to sleep or boxers and a light blue shirt, it depends on what heâs feeling really.
Loves living in the moment with you as you enjoy the others company without feeling the need to fill the air with chatter, you could just both exist and still love each other regardless because Dick didnât feel the need to talk all the time, so moments like these were what he longed for most.
Ungracefully fell on his ass in fuzzy soaks once and hurt his tailbone in the process. It was funny until he asked to you put a bag of ice on the afflicted area.
Loved narrating what you and or Hayley do in a goofy voice that never fails to make you smile.
Doesnât open up immediately but once he does itâs a sign of trust. He admits to his flaws in past relationships and how he wasnât the most faithful and often saw commitment as a challenge. He understands if you see that as a sign to leave the relationship, he doesnât expect anything from you, but if you did stay then heâs more then happy to not repeat those mistakes in your relationship.
Knows that people see Bruce when they look at him, he expects it because after being with him as long as he has it was only logical that he picked up some habits along the way whether he liked it or not.
Has a big heart but claims that Jasonâs heart was twice as big because heâs so full of love and believed in love.

Now that i think about It genuinely makes me anxious and sad knowing that they weren't in season 1 meaning in original timeline something happened after 1938. They either were killed or had to go away for some reason because you can see they really were loyal and adored Rang as their leader. Even complimenting Lee Rang as a leader who unlike other leaders treated them equally with what they get. So I imagine something really bad must have happened since Rang seems to be alone and didn't want anyone around him and it seemed like it had been years since he's been alone, Yuri had been in Rang's life around 5 year so I think probably soon after 1938 he lost the bandit in orginal timeline. What i think is they died due to some conflict or some reasons why Rang in season 1 seemed more vary of caring for anyone. Like he rescued the dog in season 1 and Yuri but wanted them to go away after he rescued then because he knows the pain of loosing and didn't want to be weak again and responsible for again releasing from their pain from his own hands (which seeing the end of season 1 where he had to kill Yeon all the more worse for him I'm surprised he didn't just k*ll himself with all the suicidal tendencies but then again technically he did since he gave away his life for Yeon). The puppy he rescued definitely reminds him of his own puppy he had to kill as a kid because of the pain it was in the mountain fire human put and was reluctant to keep Yuri around after rescuing her in both of fear and probably experienced loosing the bandit group horribly most likely and also because since the contractor was around with life debt on Rang he didn't want Yuri to be dragged in. Which makes sense because Yuri barely knew anything related to Rang and his life contractor she wasn't around or involved with Imoogi until she wanted to rescue Rang from a fatal injury. There's also that there is good chance the contractor had something to do with keeping Rang alone. Did he have a hand in Rang loosing the bandit either killed or maybe being driven away by the contractor and the contractor uses that to manipulate Rang more.
Honestly the original timeline seems so grim for Rang I'm honestly more curious what else happened when Yeon wasn't around Rang because there's a lot tha happened to Rang during Yeon's absence like after the Mountain was in fire and then there's a huge time skip of him killing people mechanically? Like he's not even himself? Why wait so long to kill the villagers? Something clearly happened to trigger him but we don't know.
Where was he ? How was he surviving? Was anyone with him? And the contractor was suspiciously on time to find a dying Rang even though Yeon thinks Rang survived because he missed Rang's vital point but Rang only survived due to the contractor finding him right on time to use cherry tree soul fruit to save his life putting him in life contractor. I wish at least in season 3 they explore that because we know Rang hates showing weakness and likley didn't tell Yeon. Because for him what's important is Yeon tried to not kill him then (which is depressing really)
Meaning the contractor knew ? Was he following Rang the entire time ? Did he do something to push Rang to kill? Did he know Yeon would miss the mark but fail to save Rang and use that to save Rang himself to kill? Is that why Yeon wasn't able to find Rang once his punishment was done?
Anyways so many questions around Rang's whereabouts. Honestly i would love to see a sequel series of original timeline and what transpired whenever he was alone after the mountain burned down. I want to see everything from then to present times without bigger plotholes to make the ml look better please. Like God the more seasons we get i honestly just have more questions on what happened to Rang in original timeline.
This moment in the second episode made me laugh out loud.Â
The relationship Lee Rang has with his gang makes me weirdly proud of him. He felt abandoned but managed to find a group of people to surround himself with.

D: Okay so D: Michael. D: What's up with that hat?đ
M: My hat...? D: Ah, the act of innocence, the act of ignorance... D: I. Have. Neeeeeeever seen you wear a hat before. D: It's so not your M.O. V: He's wearing a hat? D: Like, seriously. D: A backwards baseball cap? D: Did your mommy tell you it was cute like that or something? V: LOL S: Debbie!
M: *snort* M: You're too funny sometimes, D... M: But you're right, I almost never wear hats. M: This one just worked for me, you know? M: With the opening in the back and all. D: Can't even wear it properly.......... M: I know u_u. M: But yeah, I got this a couple days back when I went to that concert with my mama. V: So she did tell you it was cute, then? M: Ahhh... yeah, she did. V: hehehhueueh S: I think it looks very nice on you, Michael. M: Haha, you don't gotta tell me again. M: But thank you. D: WAIT. D: ..........That shade of purple............................... D: WAS IT THE DAGGERBREATH CONCERT?????????? M: Yeah it was! D: I thought I saw you putting up a poster earlier too, was that--đ M: I got that at the concert too, yeah! D: May I... see it... M: Sure, hold on, I think you'll really like this one actually.
M: See, they were premiering their new album, with the dragony album art and theme and all. D: WHAT THE HECK! D: LUCKY?! D: THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME. D: THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MEEEEEEEEEEE WHO WENT! M: Remember I did invite you to come with, D. D: YEAH but nobody else wanted to come. D: And as IF I'd be caught hanging out with just you and your mom. D: Like, come on. M: Well uh, you know if you want... M: While I'm a little too attached to the poster to give it up, you could take this hat from me next time we meet up? M: I'm not feeling it too much anyways. S: What? S: Noooo! S: It works so well on you though-- D: "It's a DEAL my liege, I'll TAKE it!" D: That is to say, D: Uh, YEAH? GIMMIE??? M: Ahaha, oh, so you've listened to their new album already then? D: Of course, who do you think I am? D: Some kind of POSER? M: Well, maybe a... "poser with all heart, no soul~" D: "TAKE A SMOKE OR MAYBE TWO AND FEEL THE ASHES TAKE CONTROL!!!!!!!" V: BUH V: You guys and your punk metal. V: Can't you listen to something a little more upbeat, maybe? S: (I don't understand it either Vilmr, but let them have their fun!)
D: Vilmr, comments like that are exactly why you gotta start breaking away from Maja a little more. D: You're gonna end up sounding just like her if you're not careful. V: Lättare sagt än gjort! V: You try being yourself when you have to listen to THIS nonstop! V: Listen!
V: Nag nag nag, right?! D: Yeah okay but that doesn't mean you gotta start nagging too -_-. S: Yeesh Vilmr, it's no wonder you get so anxious, I'd die if my parents kept calling me like that all day. V: The caring guardian... V: She eats away at your psyche like no other. D: Okay well stop listening to your cell then. D: Like, put it away for a while, that's what I do. V: I can't just not have it on me Debbie. D: Sure you can! D: Give it to me, get some freaking peace of mind for once. V: Agh! V: ...Only if you promise to give it back when I ask this time. D: Psssh, totally. D: After the eclipse, of course.
D: Hey what the heck are those lights outside your window? S: Oh wow, look! S: Sky lanterns, how pretty! M: Oh! M: I guess we're not the only ones celebrating the eclipse around here then, huh? M: Haha... D: We're not celebrating the eclipse okay, we're not cultists. D: I mean I'm not at least. D: Michael. M: Wh! D: I just wanna see it happen, it's on my bucket list you know. S: I wonder what the lanterns are really for...? M: Well, I do have a neighbor or two who are a little more on the moony side... M: Maybe that's them? M: What is it about an eclipse that's so special for some people, I wonder? S: It's like, symbolic, right? S: Like the moon represents a god, or... V: Ah, I know this! V: It is not the moon that represents a god, it is the essence they bring. M: Oh? V: Yeah. D: Oh boy, here we go... V: So basically, the reapers of the moon, the "cultists," they believe that this eclipse will um, awaken their god. V: And that god is just like, just a person right now, and nobody knows who it is, but it's someone out there. V: When this eclipse happens, it is supposed to awaken them. V: That person will be ascended to godhood, or so they believe. V: And then that god will release an uncontrollable wave of darkness across Theia.
D: Yeah so, evil cult shit. V: No, not evil. D: DARKNESS Vilmr. D: Darkness is always the bad side. V: Debbie, maybe it is you who needs to open your mind. D: Oh, what next, are you gonna tell me Varth Dader was a good guy? M: Is it like, the darkness would make us appreciate the light better, or something? M: I'm struggling to understand how that'd be a thing to... celebrate. V: Well according to the reapers, once the darkness sets in, their counter-god of light will also awaken. V: Then that god will release a wave of light around the world. V: And then the world will be in perfect harmony. V: So I think the eclipse is supposed to represent like, the wave of darkness. V: And then after it's done, it gets light again, and that represents the balancing out? V: Maja could probably explain this better than me. S: Wow, that's actually pretty beautiful to think about :o V: Ja, sure. V: But most believers end up drugging themselves to death somewhere down the line. V: Something about their souls becoming part of their god's essence. S: oh M: Jeez, that's intense. V: Yeah, there's a lot more nuance to it but I don't know all the details. M: Wow. M: Uh. M: ...Maja isn't thinking of-- V: Nej nej nej, she's different. V: She sees this all in a different way. V: Though it is hard to not worry about what might happen around the world, as a result of their beliefs...đ D: Hey uh sorry not sorry to interrupt this super duper interesting talk but, D: Are you guys seeing the stream?
D: It's getting so freaking close. S: OvO M: Fifteen more minutes until it starts! S: I'd love to be there in person, that looks so pretty. M: Well we should mark down the date five years from now to see the next one then. V: And hope that it is not happening above forbidden land. M: Oh yeah, that too, haha.

i. Earned It
Rindou is gentle with you today.
He always is, though ä¸ he never goes too far with you even in bed. He never treats you less than a human. He says one thing the night before, make you overwork yourself like the Daddy he is, and the next morning you'll find a few extra digits than what was originally promised sitting pretty in your bank account. Rindou is always gentle and generous with you.
His hands are sweet and sticky as they latch onto your skin, never letting go off your arms while he wipes you down gently in the bath. He rubs your cheek with wet thumbs and combs your hair with so much care in the world. He has never once tugged on them as harshly as the man did; never once hit you for pleasure in his own bed. Never. Maybe a few spanks on your ass here and there as a little foreplay or when you're being a tease, but he never hits you.
Rindou is so gentle with you.
"How's your throat?" He asks. Your bubble pops and you look at him dazed. "Still hurts?" He reaches a hand up to check on your skin. You move your neck away before his hands can reach you ä¸ almost as if you're scared.
He feels a foreign ache creep up his chest. His heart palpitates weirdly behind his bones. Your pupils dilate and you hide your neck with your arms. You shiver despite the warm water engulfing your body.
You are so frightened.
"I-" You swallow, feeling the sour ache going down your throat and you rub on your neck unconsciously, eyes squinting as you wait for the pain to pass. "I'm fine." Your voice is hoarse, very deep and broken, and he almost didn't hear you.
"The doctor's waiting out front. Want him to check?" He doesn't buy into your white lie at all. It's obvious it still hurts a lot and you won't let him touch you, or even see you. But you nod anyway and his shoulders relaxes a little.
ii. Million Dollar Man
"You're fucking insane!" Kokonoi is furious when Rindou waltzes into the room. "Blowing off a multi-million dollar deal for a whore, you're fucking nuts, Rindou!"
Mario Ricci is tied up against a wall, mouth stuffed with a bloody rag cloth as he struggles against the tight ropes wrapped around his figure.
"Yet you didn't proceed with it?" He questions in a sarcastic tone, an eyebrow raised and Kokonoi scoffs. "How could I? Gotta let these bastards know Bonten can't be fucked with. If I let him go more people will do it again."
Kakucho clicks his tongue from where he seats, next to Takeomi who is busy rolling up a blunt. "The deal is off the table now. No point arguing. We'll kill this guy and move on to the next. Keep everything quiet."
He stands, calves pushing against the heavy chair and it screeches loudly, sharply, against the concrete floor.
"But what about you?" His voice is low and dark when he addresses Rindou. He stares him dead in the eye.
"You're the reason why we have no deal. What are you going to do about it?"
The air is humid with Kakucho's anger ä¸ everyone in the room knows that much. For once, Sanzu is silent. He does not mess with his weapons loudly nor does he make a noise to pitch in his idea. Mochi's eyes are bright and sharp from where they burn holes into Rindou's back ä¸ he can feel the sting already. Ran is leaning against the wall behind Rindou while he plays with his set of keys in his pockets.
But Rindou remains stoic from his position. He is not afraid of Kakucho at all. He eyes the gun on the table next to him and snatches it off, soon realising that it belongs to Kakucho himself.
"I'll kill him, since that's what you want."
He aims for Mario's neck in one swift motion upon loading the gun. He sees the shimmer of desperation in his orbs, and he struggles to escape even further. His voice is muffled against the cloth shoved deep into his mouth but Rindou still hears him clearly.
"Please don't kill me."
"You're a fucking moron." And he pulls the trigger.
iii. Love song
Rindou returns to his quarters very late into the night. You're still up at this hour despite having taken heavy meds a couple of hours ago, when he'd monitor you swallow the pills with an immense amount of pain in your throat.
He finds you in his kitchen scavenging through the cabinets and fridge for a little something to eat, like a sneaky little alley cat. His penthouse is ice cold, the servants have taken their leave long ago, and he dismisses Tsuji, his trusted right-hand, with a wave and an assuring nod.
Your sleeping gown (one that he got for you as a gift) hugs your curves beautifully under the white fluffy cardigan you like to keep yourself warm with.
He watches in silence, hiding behind a wall as you simply be yourself, alone, away from the eyes of just anyone at all. You give up scurrying for seasoning after a while, settling for the bowl of plain white porridge a servant had prepared for you earlier.
Rindou watches as you lean against the countertop and play with your feet, crack your toes out of habit, hum a soft melody, as you slowly eat your food. It's endearing to see you like this. You're quiet, you're calm, but you're alone and you're by yourself ä¸ and a smile nobody has ever seen him do stretches across his lips when you put down the bowl to do a little twirl. Your humming gets louder and he recognises the tune shortly ä¸ one that you have always liked playing on the piano sitting in his massive living room.
You're a slut, but you're also just a girl.
iv. Glory Box
Rindou is still so gentle tonight when he wraps you in a blanket and smooths a warm hand down the back of your head. Your scalp is still sore, so he doesn't run his fingers through your locks this time.
You're almost asleep when he makes a noise. Low, but comforting. His chest vibrates against your cheek.
"Do you want to leave?"
You're confused by his question. "Where?" You move your head away from his chest and look at him ä¸ eyes clouded with sleep, and you blink twice to see him properly again under the moonlight. The windows are closed but he left the curtains open. He likes doing that a lot.
"Follow another man, pleasure him instead. Or just leave, find something else to do. Pick one. I'm giving you a chance to live."
His voice is stern and this is how he chooses to start the conversation ä¸ by threatening to kill you if you do not make a choice right now. He is sudden and he is stubborn.
It's not like you want to, anyway. You're not afraid of him.
"No." You frown. "I want to stay here, with you."
He is nonchalant at your response, and you look like you're about to cry.
He does not respond or react.
"Are you giving me away?" You push.
Rindou finally lets out a breath he did not know he was holding in when the first tear finally rolls off your rosy cheek. "Please don't give me away. I'll be good, even more better for you. Today was a mistake. I didn't know anyone would be there. I was waiting for you to come."
He hates that you're blaming yourself for what happened to you earlier.
He hates that you're downplaying your trauma just to amuse him and make himself feel better, a little trick you had learned to use during your time while working in this industry.
He isn't enlightened, not at all ä¸ because he knows exactly what you're doing.
He'd ended the life of the man who'd put you in pain, but it does not mean that killing Mario Ricci would take the pain away from you.
The foreign ache from earlier has not once subsided from his chest. It remains, sometimes growing even more suffocating and frustrating. Like when he had to sit through the meeting hearing Kokonoi and Kakucho ä¸ mostly Kokonoi because he was at the scene, and he is still very unsatisfied with Rindou's behaviour ä¸ going back and forth about getting rid of you like you're just some giveaway slut because they claim he is being distracted from the real job at hand, while his eyes are constantly flickering between the two who are shoving accusing fingers in his face and the leash that Mario Ricci had tied you in sitting at the corner of the room.
You have managed to engrave yourself in all parts of his heart ä¸ every little nook and cranny, you are there.
The girl he's tried sleeping with earlier to make himself feel a little less bad about having to kill you as an apology to Mikey, doesn't feel the same. He keeps telling himself that you are just like any other girl from the many who are working under Bonten's establishments.
Yet the second he pushes in, he pulls out, away, and he leaves. He throws her a stack of cash anyway and makes his way back immediately.
Because she isn't you. She does not look at him like you do. To her, he is just like any other rich man paying her for quick pleasure. To you, he is everything gentle and soft and warm.
You have managed to capture his attention the first few nights you've spent together ä¸ two years ago, as a temporary replacement for the girl he had originally booked for that night.
And then he keeps coming back. Again and again for two whole years, and now you're looking at him like he'd just broken your heart. His heart beats wildly in his chest and he ushers for you to come closer to him.
The way you would hold onto him while he drills into you frustrates him. He likes that you always let him have his way in bed, but manages to make him cater to your likes in the end every single time, and he has to remind himself that he is the one paying for your services, but he never cares, because it's you. He puts an extra zero when transferring funds into your account and he handpicks your gifts. Your eyes are always so glossy and full of hearts when they'd gaze into his purples. Your mewls are always so sweet and only for his ears when you'd try to moan quietly even when you're alone in his lonely, freezing penthouse.
And you wonât fucking leave him.
You're a gentle, quiet girl, and you make him want to be gentle and quiet with you too.
You straddle him and pin him to the bed. You want him to take you seriously this time. "I am yours." You try to make yourself sound stern but your lips end up pouty and red and hot tears are dripping on his face.
He tried to, really. He really wants to take you seriously. But the collar of your dress is low and your milky breasts are showing. Your lips are so kissable and he folds.
He presses one hand down your back and guides your upper body closer to him.
"You don't wanna leave?" He asks, rhetorically. His voice is muffled when he buries his face in your mounds to kiss and suck on your tits. He sneaks a hand up under your dress to fondle with them, to grope your soft flesh and listen to you whine like an angel on his lap.
"Don't wanna." You pout.
He reaches under your dress to rub a sweet thumb on your clit ä¸ messy figure-eights and sticky circles, pressing down just the way you like it ä¸ through the thin fabric of your panties and watch as you unfold so beautifully before his eyes.
His favourite, pretty girl.
His heart starts beating normally again. It hasn't beaten like this for a very long time ä¸ not since he was a teen.
Haitani Rindou wonders just when did he ever lose the ability to love.
"You'll be my liability now."

going seventeen 2020 <> svtsideout
word count: 1.8k italics are in english, bolded words are in mandarin a/n: omg?? what is this?? a second update for yours truly?? got this as a request and inspiration came flying - enjoy a nice cooldown for all the angst last update!
"Hold on, hold on." Cyana had to calm them down as they started filming. "I still don't really understand what the point of today's content is."
Vernon laughed, pulling her aside to repeat the rules to her but this time in English. "We're basically doing activities while the staff tell us what emotion we have to do everything in. Like the movie Inside Out."
"Ahhhh~" Cyana nodded in understanding. "Okay. Sounds-" She frowned. "Sounds kinda silly."
"That's basically what Going Seventeen is." Vernon patted her on the back before leading her to join the group again. "Get used to it!" He shot her a thumbs-up, smiling wide when she returned a unimpressed stare.
"Wow." Dino marvelled, bringing attention to Cyana and Vernon's exchange all of a sudden. "When did Cyana get so much attitude?"
"She's always been sassy." Mingyu corrected, poking at Cyana. "Seventeen's princess~" He teased.
Cyana swatted his finger away, pointing at the staff. "Shouldn't we be filming today's content, guys?"
[staff sends seventeen's princess thanks]
"Ahh~ look at her being so professional." Hoshi teased. "She's right though."
"We've been working nonstop recently..." Dino exclaimed, bringing the spotlight onto himself. Cyana watched from next to Vernon as Dino began to introduce the premise. "...except Seungkwan."
"Seungkwan isn't here today." Hoshi repeated.
"I heard..." Jeonghan started. "...we're inside Seungkwan right now."
As the others exclaimed excitedly, Cyana grew confused, repeating Jeonghan's words under her breath, thinking she must've heard him wrong. "Inside...Seungkwan?" She asked Vernon.
Vernon nodded. "Yeah," he gestured around the room. "We're inside him right now."
She made a face. "That sounds kinda wrong."
"We're his emotions." He corrected, laughing at her disgusted reaction.
"Oh~" She nodded, finally getting it.
[HAPPY MODE ON]
Everyone started laughing almost at once, leaving Cyana confused, but joining in nevertheless. Pausing in between bouts of forced laughter, she smacked Vernon's shoulder. "What on earth is going on?"
Vernon could only shake his head, looking just as pained as he pretended to laugh. Jeonghan suddenly began to shake Cyana, encouraging her to laugh harder.
"HA. HA. HAHAHAHA." Cyana yelled out, right into Jeonghan's face.
Jeonghan fell back in harsh laughter, real this time.
"Wowww." She couldn't help to gawk at how high the rock climbing course was. She grabbed a helmet, putting it on as she continued to stare at the sheer size of the place. "This is amazing."
"Their shoulders are too wide to fit through." Mingyu's voice cut through her amazement.
She turned, giggling when she saw Wonwoo and the others, unable to cross through the pillars.
"Hoshi wants to go first." Dino pushed Hoshi towards the center. "C'mon."
[RAGE MODE ON]
The place suddenly exploded in shouts of anger, surprising Cyana who was had been talking to Jun seconds ago. She jumped in fright, letting out a harsh breath when she realized the mood had changed. She watched as the others 'fought' and couldn't help but gape at how insane they all were.
"Wow. So this is you guys during Going Seventeen." She couldn't help be a little intimidated. "I see..."
Jun snorted, breaking character upon seeing Cyana's revelation.
Mingyu pushed Jeonghan, flinging the guy several steps towards where Cyana and Jun stood, near the back. Cyana's mouth dropped at the sheer strength of Mingyu. She couldn't wrap her head around how quickly they could adapt to anger as such docile and kind people.
Jun nudged her. "You try."
She frowned. Walking up to DK, she tried imitating the gangsters for those Korean dramas she had been watching. "Who are you?" She asked aggressively, widening her stance and knocking up against DK.
The boy only burst into laughter at the sight.
"Cyana's only cute when she gets mad." Joshua said, still maintaining an aggressive tone although he was fighting not to smile.
[SAD MODE ON]
This time Cyana was ready. She had seen the cue from the staff first, immediately burying her face into Joshua's shirt pretending to cry. A little taken aback, Joshua patted her back and pretended to cry as well. She was glad her face was away from the camera or she would've died with embarrassment.
Joshua leaving her once it was his turn, she sat next to Wonwoo and gave him a tiny smile. She felt comforted he too wasn't really down to be acting so hard.
"He's so skillful." She heard Dino wail out, her shoulders now shaking with laughter instead of pretend tears.
Joshua came down, only greeted by a jealous and tearful Dino, who complimented him with wailing tones. "You're so skillful. Are there a lot of mountains in LA?"
Cyana couldn't help but snort, hand flying out to grab Wonwoo's. It isn't missed by the camera, the awkward parting they had and the little side-eye they both gave each other when the other wasn't looking.
"Jump, Wonwoo!" Jeonghan yelled from his spot on the ground.
Cyana craned her neck up, watching as the boy prepared himself and jumped across. "Wowww." She said quietly. "He looks like a koala, the way he's hanging onto the sack."
Wonwoo's cheeks turned pink at her comment as he was lowered down.
DK was next, his legs visibly shaking as he climbed up.
"DK butt sexy!" Mingyu yelled out after him, prompting DK to move his hips, resulting in both cheers and groans from the others.
"Ya- Mingyu." Woozi chided. "There's a girl here."
Mingyu glanced at Cyana with red ears. Jun shielded her eyes as DK continued his climb up. Once he had reached the top, Jun let his hand down and Cyana could see how scared DK was.
"DK jump!" The others called. "You won't actually fall!"
"DK." Cyana cupped her hands around her mouth to yell. "Jump or the cookies I made back home aren't yours!"
DK looked down at her, cringing at the height. "No!" He yelled back. "That's not fair!"
"Jump!" She yelled, cheering the loudest when he did.
--
"I think I'm going to pass out." Mingyu mumbled, as he looked down at the sheer height he was at. "Why did I agree to this?"
"Mingyu!" Dino yelled up. "If you don't jump you have to call me hyung!"
"Hyung!" Mingyu yelled down. Cyana let out a loud laugh at his blatant cry of defeat. "Hyung!"
"Me too!" She yelled up at him. "Call me Noona!"
Mingyu fixed her with a stare. "Ah~ No thank you."
She pouted. "Then jump."
Mingyu looked at the sack, as if gauging an opponent.
"You can do it!" Hoshi yelled. "Mingyu!"
Cyana was both surprised he did jump and a little sad she didn't get to hear him call her noona. She sighed. "It would've been so funny."
[TIMID MODE ON]
Cyana rolled a basketball across the floor towards Dino. "So we don't get hurt." She gave him a sweet smile, making him smile back.
"Guys, get over here." Seungcheol waved them over to where the group stood.
"Let's divide our teams by odd and even?" Wonwoo suggested, his tone meek and timid to match the current mood. Everyone nodded, splitting off into separate sides of the basketball court. Sensing Cyana's confusion, Wonwoo clarified for the girl. "Based on your place in the group age ranking. You're number 14 so you're with the evens."
She nodded gratefully, moving to join Jeonghan and her other teammates.
[game start!]
Seungcheol threw the jump ball rather timidly, as Hoshi slapped it over Vernon's head and close to Cyana. She swiftly grabbed the ball, taking aim and shooting the ball into the net with a clean swish.
"Wow, you're good?" Vernon exclaimed, although it sounded more like a question.
"Played a bit when I was younger." She shrugged, passing the ball to Jun and jogging alongside him.
The game continued, Cyana surprising everyone as she scored goal after goal. The other team was still catching up though, and Cyana could feel herself getting sucked into the competitiveness of the game.
[EXCITED MODE ON]
"Finally!" She yelled out. "Timid is no way to play a game."
She watched, amused at the ruckus the boys were causing at the other end of the court, as DK threw the ball into Hoshi's knees. Taking over, Cyana dribbled towards the hoop, letting out a frustrated groan when Mingyu came up to block her.
"This isn't fair!" She yelled out, trying to pass him. "You're a wall!" She does her best to body check him, slamming her shoulder into his chest. He doesn't move an inch. "Mingyu!" She whined, passing the ball to an awaiting Minghao.
"That hurt." Mingyu whined back, rubbing his chest. "You're all bone. Owwww~"
[SAD MODE ON]
As the game progressed, Cyana got in a couple more goals, managing to stay far away from Mingyu. He was the only one able to guard her, as she sped past the others or merely moved gracefully through them.
"I want to win." Dino cried out, his face morphing into a sad one.
Catching on, Cyana matched his tone and expression. "I'm so sad I'm doing sooo well."
Dino frowned. "It's not fair. You're using your experience against us."
[experience > svt]
Before Cyana can retaliate, a loud thud and sounds of laughter echoed from the other end of the court. Cyana moved away from the bodies blocking her view, realizing Seungcheol had slipped and lost his shoe in the process.
"I didn't swear!" Seungcheol tried excusing himself as he got up. "I said shoes- not sh-"
"You were really good at basketball." Joshua marvelled, as they had finished the game and were now sitting down for snacks. "I was really shocked."
She blushed under the praise. "I played a lot in LA. The weather was always good so I was always at the park."
"You should play with Seungkwan sometime." He offered, reminding her Seungkwan also liked basketball. "He can introduce you to NCT's Chenle. They play together sometimes."
She nodded. "That sounds-"
The sound of Minghao yelling cut her train of thought, leaving her speechless. "Who asked for Cola?" He yelled out, the sheer volume and strength of his voice stunning the girl.
"Wow." She gaped again, turning to Joshua. "I didn't even know Hao had a set of lungs that could do that."
Joshua bit back a smile, trying to stay in character and on theme. "We're all loud when we want to be." He informed her.
She narrowed her eyes at him, not quite believing him. "Even Wonwoo and Woozi?"
"Even Wonwoo and Woozi." He agreed.
"Even you?" She pressed again. "I've never seen you mad or loud at all."
Hoshi turned around to face them, having overheard their conversation. "Joshua's pure insanity. He just hides it well."
Cyana muffled a giggle behind her sleeve. She watched as the others continued to yell, the amount of attitude in one room overwhelming her. She glanced at the camera, mouthing "I want to go home."
[overstimulated by loudness]

Miya Atsumu: VBC
Fandom: Haikyuu!! â [ Masterlist ]
Summary: -1.8k, fluff
⢠Joining the Inarizaki volleyball team isnât what you expected, but maybe someone can help with that.
Warnings: fem!reader, curses
>>>>ââââââââââ>
In honesty you were ecstatic to transfer to Inarizaki High for second year, it gave you the opportunity to reconnect with your best friend and you'd heard amazing things about the volleyball club there. Hamada Yuki and yourself had been on a team together in middle school, she remains your favourite setter but that might be bias.
The key word being 'were'. It wasn't until you'd arrived did you understand the misconception - you had every intention of joining the females VBC despite your friends' discernment. Upon passing the advertising for after school clubs, you noted their sales pitch wasn't exactly suited to one's passion for the sport.
"The main reason to join is for the Miya twins!"
It was rather a passion for the boys.
"But this is the girls team." You'd deadpan stated, as if this resolved everything.
Alas the promoter and captain disagreed with a gleaming smile that suggested she'd been begging to elaborate on such things.
"Yes exactly! Atsumu and Osamu are interested in volleyball, meaning the boys team are liable to play us during training. Giving us a chance to spend time and learn from them~"
"Great, I'm all for the competition butâ"
"If you're lucky you might even end up with a hot boyfriend!"
Instantly the leaflet in your palm was scrunched, a huff of disappointment escaping you.
"Then I'd rather find somewhere else to play." You curtly responded, the girl taken aback but cheerfully calling after you anyway.
"Weâ We're showing around potential recruits after school if you change your mind!"
Once reaching your newly assigned classroom, the balled up paper was dumped on your friends' desk who only looked up to you with a raised brow.
"That's why you were evasive about me joining the volleyball club."
She released a tired hum, like she'd been expecting this conversation, whilst unfolding the leaflet depicting the Miyas and other members of the boys team in the background.
"Told ya (Y/n), as a member of the so called 'Inarizaki Girls Volleyball Team', it's more of a damn fan club at this point." Yuki seethed, re-scrunching the flyer and shooting into the bin across the classroom.
"I could tell. Is anyone serious there besides you?" You questioned once sitting at your desk beside hers, the setter shaking her head thoughtfully.
"A few. We're vastly outnumbered by fangirls though, we practice and they do whatever they do - sometimes asking us about terminology and such to impress certain people of course."
On that note, you figured it'd be worth seeing what the fuss was about later, and if what Yuki had told you was true.
Lo and behold, after watching the makeshift girls practice (much to YĹŤjis' chargrin when trying to teach receives) for a few minutes, it was exactly like she'd described. However, the second you'd reached the boys practice, the surrounding group of girls came to life with unadulterated adoration for the players. Squeals and cheers erupting when they'd take shots or score, meanwhile you'd analysed the plays with a degree of knowledge.
It was then you'd locked eyes with the charismatic setter, only for a second, before his shift in focus sent your fellow potentials into a frenzy.
That's enough. You walked out.
âââ
So the girls team wasn't your cup of tea. That didn't mean you'd cease playing the game you enjoyed - when there's a will there was a way. Especially with the nearby community centre hosting volleyball sessions regularly, and you were able to book time slots there with Yuki and some of her teammates.
It meant you were settling into this new environment, even if it wasnât perfect. As an Inarizaki tradition, and a volleyball fan, you naturally ended up watching a few of the boys games out of support. They were talented too, deserving of their recognition even if part of it was solely linked to their attractiveness rather than skill.
âYa came to the game huh, transfer?â He caught you as you were about to leave the gym in the midst of students fussing over them, an apologetic hand immediately retracting from your wrist where heâd reached for you.
âYeah, apparently itâs a tradition or something since you guys are the pride of Inarizaki.â Youâd spoken casually, a shrug accompanying it which he seemed somewhat defeated by considering the recent victory.
âOh reallyâŚ?â
âMhm. You played well though, Miya.â
âItâs nothinâ, all thanks to training and my team yâknow?â It appeared heâd reignited, a sudden enlightenment about him due to your praise.
âKeep it up then. See you around.â
âIâ uhâ yeah hope so!â
âââ
Today, you'd ventured to the centre, court doors open to allow a soft breeze to freshen the area. As well as a perspective viewpoint for curious passers-by, one that captured the double back of a certain blonde.
Finally, spike!
"Hey I know ya!"
Faltering, an awry angle that left you landing a little awkwardly but your hit was remained seemless. Still, you shot a dangerous glare to the intruders, finding Atsumu holding the door he'd previously slammed wide open and Osamu who also seemed done with his twins' spontaneity.
"And yet you don't."
"Yer from class. The transfer.â Atsumu proudly replied to your dismissal, walking in with a wave alongside his brother who facepalmed with an agitated mutter.
âTheir name is (L/n) (Y/n).â
âWell I never asked âem!â Even though youâd spoken a few of times and itâd been nearly two months, this remained true.
"Okay, and?" Your lack of acknowledgement left Atsumu pouting slightly, but he was more intrigued by your choice of venue considering the fully functioning gym and team currently training at Inarizaki.
"And yer here playing volleyball instead of at school! Yer good, the girls team would be glad to have ya."
"I'd rather play for the community centre." You immediately responded a matter-of-factly, facing him now and spinning the recovered ball between your hands.
"But they don't get to enter high school competitions." It seemed he wasn't entirely convinced, having not discovered the answers he was politely fishing for.
"I know."
"Alright! I just wanna know why yer here? Iâd get to play against ya if yer were apart of the school team." Atsumu argued again, more direct this time.
"Because the girls team is a damn fan club for you guys, the only score they're interested is scoring a date with you!"
"Aww, I mean..."
"Why bother joining a team like that when hardly any of them are there to actually play volleyball." You'd rolled your eyes, emotion present when explaining your point and Atsumu seemed to empathise.
"I get it. That'd piss me off too."
"Agreed." Osamu added, an understanding nod toward you.
"Then you have your answer."
With little more to say, the twins shared a sceptical look, before returning their focus to you once more.
âWould ya mind if we joined ya then?â
The question caught you off-guard, darting between them as if searching for some ulterior motive only to find none.
âSure⌠I donât mind.â
âThanks (L/n).â
âYeah cheers!â Osamu and Atsumu respectively threw their thanks and removed their jackets ready to play.
âââ
Itâd been a week since that escapade, and youâd found the twins sharing gestures of greeting if they saw you around the school but nothing out of the ordinary. At least not until nowâŚ
"Psst (Y/n)!" Yuki came dashing in, evading desks until she'd reached yours with a devious look. "Guess what."
"You actually got an A?"
"Rude." A scoff. "No, Miya Atsumu came to practice yesterday."
"I am so sorry for your loss of concentration, I imagine your fangirl teammates couldn't take their eyes off him." Sarcasm flowed like an effortless river, one that normally fuelled Yuki, except she held a scheming tone when responding straightforwardly.
"He eradicated over half of the club."
"What?" You shock was evident, youâd heard he could be critical in games and a bit of an ass but this was unexpected - Yuki far too happy to extend.
"Yep. Miya comes in and gives a whole speech about âif you're not serious about playing then quitâ. Said if you're here for the boys team, he'll ask to open a practice for them to watch - and something about how being apart of this club isn't gonna catch his attention because he already likes someone.â
"Woah." It was all you could muster, considering that this whole thing might've been linked to your conversation the other day. He wouldn't do that for such a trivial reason though, right? But if was to protect the sport he loved then it made sense.
"So... wanna join the team and play as my precious Spiker again?" Yuki persuadingly started when clasping your shoulders, earnest gratitude and glee lacing her voice.
"Seriously?"
"Yes! Remaining members want to progress and I want my middle school ace by my side again so we can kick ass and go to Nationals!"
"Then I'm in, but isn't there a trial orâ" You matched her contagious energy, until she cut you off holding up an already filed applicant form.
"Just approval from the captain." Yuki smirked, that evil one she wore when she had something over you. "Me."
"You?â
"What? Once the chief of the Miya fan club quit along with the others, the team needed a serious captain.â She struck a model pose. âWho better than the reliable setter right?"
"I agree with the setter stuff, but uh can I talk to (L/n) for a sec?" The pair of you looked to the confident origin, finding none other than Atsumu walking toward you.
Yuki gave a little teasing wave and left you two to talk.
"I think ya should give the girls volleyball club a chance y'know." Heâd held a hand to the back of neck, a lopsided grin on his lips regardless of the underlying awkwardness he harboured.
"Oh yeah? Why's that?"
"Went there yesterday, no fangirls in sight - just the makings of a solid team. Maybe ya were wrong about it."
"Maybe I was. Captain Yuki did personally invite me, so the least I could do is try it out." You paused momentarily, meeting his air burn eyes with mischievous ones of your own. "Considering all your hard work Miya."
There was a guilty look crossing his expression ever so briefly, the blonde shaking it off with a cocky smile.
"No idea whatcha talking about. Whatever, do what ya want!"
âââ
The Inarizaki girls VBC was a brilliant one now it'd been fortified, you got to play alongside your best friend once more and were surrounded by a team of talented individuals who you could hang out with as friends too.
Due to improved team cohesion, there were even joint training sessions alongside the boys VBC, sessions which the third years had said were more frequent than they ever had been before.
They couldn't help but think all the beneficial changes recently were all down to a single catalyst. Said catalyst apparently trying to impress a certain someone who'd captured more than his attention. The same one who heâd been too nervous to ask for a name numerous times when sparking conversation. The same one heâd look for during games and throughout the school corridors.
Unfortunately the certain someone was oblivious to such signs and thought nothing of it when Inarizaki walked into the gym - their prodigal setter immediately laying eyes on who everyone knew to be this certain someone.
"Hey (Y/n), can I set for ya?"

Hi đ, can u do Vi x Reader. Where Vi was relaxing on their bed. While Reader came in with a cute calico kitten. It has white fur and black and orange spots everywhere and she has grayish eyes just like Vi. Reader saw Vi sleeping and she stare in awe. Reader put the cat on Viâs stomach and it slowly walks up to Vi. Vi started to wake up and saw a cute kitten and she jumped and the kitten fell on bed cover. Vi stared confused and Reader tells Vi it is a gift for her. She cried a little and cupped her hands so the kitten can come and it did. Vi kissed the kittenâs cheek. Then the kitten licked her nose and rubbed her cheek.ďżź
Vi x Reader: Kitten Chaos đž
(aka Vi and the Calico Baby)
ââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Okay, so picture this: Viâs sprawled out on the bed, looking all peaceful and hot in that messy, âI just fought 10 people and now Iâm exhaustedâ way. Sheâs got her tank top on, her hairâs a little messy, and her face is relaxed for once. Like, sheâs not scowling or smirkingâjust soft. Youâre dying a little inside because youâre staring at her like sheâs the eighth wonder of the world (which she kinda is).
But hereâs the thingâyouâre holding a kitten.
Not just any kitten, though. This cute little calico with white fur, orange-and-black patches, and the exact same grayish eyes as Vi. Like, you swear the universe handpicked this kitten just for her. Itâs destiny or whatever. The kittenâs tiny, fluffy, and curious, batting at your hair like, âTake me to her already!â
So you tiptoe into the room because you donât wanna wake her up just yet. Youâre having this whole âawe momentâ like, wow, sheâs so pretty when sheâs not trying to punch something. But then you remember why youâre here. Itâs go time.
You carefully place the kitten on Viâs stomach, and this little fluff ball immediately starts doing the tiniest steps, like, pat-pat-pat. The kitten looks SO focused, like itâs on a mission to wake up the sleeping queen. It sniffs Viâs tank top, lets out the softest âmew,â and youâre just standing there trying not to scream at how cute this is.
AND THEN VI STIRS.
She blinks awake, all groggy, squinting like, wtf is happening? And THEN she sees the kitten. Like, her eyes go WIDE, and she practically jumps a mile in the air, which, okay, makes the kitten tumble onto the blanket. (But itâs fine! The kittenâs fine! No kittens were harmed!)
Vi stares at the kitten like it just fell from the sky. âWhat the hellâŚ?â she mutters, her voice all raspy and confused. She looks at you like, did I miss something?
And youâre over there grinning like an idiot. âSurprise!â you say, gesturing to the kitten. âSheâs yours. I got her for you.â
Cue the emotional breakdown.
Viâs mouth opens and closes like a fish, and you swear you see her eyes get all watery. âFor me?â she whispers, her voice cracking a little. She scoops her hands together, and you gently place the kitten into her palms. The kitten fits perfectly, curling up like it was meant to be there.
Vi stares at the kitten, her lips trembling. âYou didnât have toâŚâ she says, but sheâs already sniffling, pressing a soft kiss to the kittenâs cheek.
AND THEN IT GETS BETTER. The kitten licks her nose with its tiny little tongue and rubs its head against her cheek, like itâs already in love with her. Vi straight-up melts. Like, this badass fighter whoâs taken punches from everyone in Zaun is now reduced to a puddle of emotions because of one (1) kitten.
She glances up at you with tears in her eyes. âYouâre the best,â she says, her voice all choked up, before looking back at the kitten. âAnd youâre the cutest.â
And youâre standing there thinking, No, YOUâRE the cutest. But you donât say it out loud because this moment is PERFECT. You just sit next to her, watching her cuddle her new tiny best friend.
Vi + kitten = softest thing ever. Youâre never gonna recover from this.
TL;DR: You gave Vi a kitten
