The replacement for Apollo's candle had been delayed for a while, but had been slated to be shipped out last Monday, so I'd promised Apollo and Hermes that I would light it in thanks for a recently completed divination session after it arrived. Turns out that it didn't ship until this past Friday and was slated to be delivered on Wednesday, which I mentioned while doing the prayers to close out yesterday's divination session to acknowledge that I remembered my promise.
It arrived two days early! I burned it as soon as I could after I got home, and now I can light Apollo's candle during divination sessions instead of Hermes' (which burnt his down quite a bit) or a tealight. Hail Hermes for the swift delivery!

    CRAFTS TO MAKE AND SELL EBOOKS. Pick a craft project, make it and sell it!
I’ve prepared a long list of good selling crafts and the types of places that repeatedly buy them.
    So, whether you’re looking for a craft that sells easily or you already have a favorite craft and you’re looking for people to buy them, you’ve come to the right place.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thousands of people around the country are making money with crafts working from home. (I’m one of them.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We’re making items that people want to buy.
    You, too, can make money offering customers what they’re looking for.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Handmade crafts and unique gifts are ALWAYS in demand! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For three decades I’ve been making handmade items of all kinds, for all kinds of customers. Some of my crafts have been bought and shipped overseas. (I’m in Colorado.)     Because I want to make as much money as possible with my crafts, I’ve been studying closely what sells well and what doesn’t.     I’ve discovered that the crafts that sell well have several things in common ~ even if the crafts themselves are very different.     And crafts that didn’t sell well had other things in common!     Once I figured out these many secrets, I was well on my way to selling every craft I made ~~ and life was better.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You don’t have to spend DECADES learning which crafts sell quickly and which don’t. You can learn it TODAY! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The main book has over 100 pages, which include DOZENS of specific crafting ideas. Most of the crafts have several variations, so you can make them uniquely your own.     And what’s equally important, you’ll discover why these particular crafts sell better than others.     Once you understand why something sells and why another thing doesn’t, you can apply these principals to any craft and evaluate if it’s going to be a good seller before you put your time, effort and money into making it.     Furthermore, if you already have a craft you love making ~~ but it’s not selling as well as you had hoped ~~ you can take the principals presented in this book and compare them to your craft item or your method of marketing them.     You’ll quickly see how to BOOST your sales!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I GUARANTEE you’ll understand how to make ANY craft sell better, or I’ll refund every penny you paid for this ebook package…
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I mean that! I GUARANTEE that these books will teach you how to get your craft selling better ~~ or I’ll give you a full refund.
    To order the Crafts to Make and Sell Ebook Package for only $19.95 over 100 pages in four books, including all the bonus information, click on this link:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It’s important to find the craft that’s right for YOU. Finding a craft you love to make and sell is part of finding SUCCESS in this field. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We’re all unique individuals ~~ which is why our handmade items are so special.     For this reason, I’ve included a wide variety of craft options in a vast array of mediums ~~ cloth, leather, wood, tile, paint, yarn, ink, stone, etc. So, if you don’t have a craft you love making, you can find one that’s just right for YOU.     Or if you already have a craft, you’ll learn how to make them more marketable and where to find customers who want to buy them.     Thirty years of experience selling crafts cannot be put into a small pamphlet.     It’s not theory and it’s not fluff. It’s useful information that will help you choose the craft that fits both you and your wonderful future craft-buying customers!
~~~ Testimonials ~~~ Here’s what crafters are emailing in about the ‘Crafts To Make And Sell’ ebook package:
Dusty, I have been looking for a book like this. Thank you so much. I am a professional long arm quilter and I look for ways to expand my business. This book is just what I need. I really love all the very helpful information.
Tumblr media
    I do craft shows in addition to quilting quilts for other people. I have been struggling with what crafts to make for craft shows. I have tried several things but I don’t do real well. I think your book gives really great information and I am going to put it to use right away.     Thank you so much for this great book. You did a very nice job. Terrie Hatcher (Colorado) Cozy Country Quilt
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks, Dusty! We sell soap. Your book validated something I was thinking – how to increase sales and make our product more unique. We sell to both locals and tourists. We do special gift sets that are packaged for easy travel.     The next step – here’s the validation part – will be to offer wrap bands that can go over the bars of soap and be customized, such as for holidays, business promotions, etc. That will help us expand our marketing efforts.     I now see how that can lead to more customized products (non-soap). Hmmmmm – lots of new ideas!     Thanks for your help, Jennifer (Florida) [email protected]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello Dusty, Thank you. I have printed the first book and have read half of it. It has been a reality check and inspiration so far. I appreciate the work you have put into writing it.
I mostly work with silk painting in an impressionistic way and painting and embellishing on cotton fabric.     This book is helping me to realize different ways to produce craft products to sell. And find appropriate outlets to sell them. Thank you again.     Kind Regards, Lynn Marie Violich (New Zealand)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No problems downloading the file, didn’t even take that long. I am still reading through it, but have focused on a couple of key areas of interest about filling a niche and doing wood working.
    The Google section was excellent and really helped with marketing research. The types of crafts I want to market receive more than a million search hits a month, so that gives me confidence that I’m on the right track.
    Thanks again! Bill Herr (Kansas)
As you can see from these testimonials, readers of this crafting ebook package are quickly learning how to develop new products and find new customers.     These clever crafters paid only $19.95 for this information. But they’ll earn 10 to 100 times as much money as they implement what they’re learning.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These are the 43 chapters you’ll get just in the main ebook. There’s MORE great information in the bonus ebooks! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MY GIFT TO YOU!
~ CONNECTING TO HIGHER SELF ~ (Press play to watch and listen as I fish this for you) My higher self switch is turned on. I believe, think, know and feel that my connection to my higher self is switched on now. I am ready, willing and able to pause and in the silence allow spirit to show me the simpler way. I know, when, where, how and why to co-create with my higher self, in balance with my thinking, and heart resonance.I am doing so now with grace and ease in all languages and throughout all time lines and so it is.
From the Fish Box
"Working with Jimmy has resulted in numerous miracles for my family. Together we have saved our family farm after the negative legacy of the GFC threatened us and almost brought me to breakdown personally. We’ve negotiated legal issues, banks, real estates, relationships....you name it.....I feel I’ve been hit with the lot.....but by fishing them together we truly have worked miracles! Even my lawyer cannot believe the outcomes achieved. He said he’s never seen anyone beat the odds the way I have.  "For me the real game changer was the decision last year to sign up for the monthly My Daily Prayer service you now offer. It was like fine tuning my connection to Spirit through you. Each month I’ve been able to tackle the most pressing issues in detail, and as we headed for the last hurdle of refinancing the farm with some historical credit issues that once again put the odds against us, the Daily Prayer Service has come through again! "I’m learning to trust that process knowing things will work out with grace and ease....perhaps not the way I expected, but with better results. Life in general has been smoother since starting the MDP service and that’s a fact. Relationships within the family are the best they’ve ever been, and everyone is thriving.  I can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel ....... you have no idea how comforting that is after all we have been through! Thank you for the blessings your work has brought to my family." - Erica B./ Australia
Receive 24/7 Prayers from Jimmy
You will send me a list of the members of your immediate household, and yes even pets, and I will add them to my daily prayers. I will arise daily before you are even awake to start my prayers and also run my intelligent computer software 24/7 deleting the negative and increasing the strength of the positive creating a higher probability of outcomes for you and the family.  Each comes with a one-time email analysis print out via the intelligent healing software that I use on your behalf.  Most clients have had amazing results and outcomes and I get emails of thanks each and every week!
I will dial into you daily in the wee hours and make certain that you are a CLEAR YES, UNCLEAR to NO and RUNNING FORWARD before you start your day.
We’ve negotiated legal issues, banks, real estates, relationships....you name it.....I feel I’ve been hit with the lot.....but by fishing them together we truly have worked miracles! Even my lawyer cannot believe the outcomes achieved. He said he’s never seen anyone beat the odds the way I have.  "For me the real game changer was the decision last year to sign up for the monthly My Daily Prayer service you now offer. It was like fine tuning my connection to Spirit through you. Each month I’ve been able to tackle the most pressing issues in detail, and as we headed for the last hurdle of refinancing the farm with some historical credit issues that once again put the odds against us, the Daily Prayer Service has come through again! "I’m learning to trust that process knowing things will work out with grace and ease....perhaps not the way I expected, but with better results. Life in general has been smoother since starting the MDP service and that’s a fact. Relationships within the family are the best they’ve ever been, and everyone is thriving.  I can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel ....... you have no idea how comforting that is after all we have been through! Thank you for the blessings your work has brought to my family." - Erica B./ Australia
TGIWednesday and my gift to you plus it's bogo time!
Tumblr media
TGIWednesday News
Are you weary of all the advertising already?... Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Local Business Saturday, Giving Tuesday ... well guess what, we're going to top them all with... wait for it ... "The 12 Days of BOGO!"  But first... remember during this time of year to make time for you to relax a little bit, maybe a massage or day trip or walk in the park. You MUST take better care of you.  As I age, self-care becomes more important.  Are you make you a priority? If you’re reading this You are the gift that keeps on giving and being and co-creating.  We have chosen to take the road less traveled, often filled with as much wonder as adversity - know that you can be the gift to and for others and by so doing you’re giving yourself a wonderful gift in the process of being loving and kind, grounded and calm and contributing to others.
Tumblr media
And that is also what "The 12 Days of BOGO" is here to support - for YOU to get the boost you need to be your best!  For the next 12 Days - December 4th-15th, ALL clearing audios in the shop are now "Buy One, Get One" FREE.  You simply place 2 audio items in your cart per transaction and you'll get $57 off your order automatically at checkout (no code needed). NOTE: I only do this ONCE PER YEAR so go wild!
Monitor each email's performance.
1. Do not buy email addresses.
I know what you're thinking: In the early stages of an email marketing newsletter, you want to do whatever it takes to kickstart the campaign and get eyeballs on your business. I get it. Whatever options you see online, however, you should resist the urge to purchase an email list.
There are lots of ways to buy an email list, but none of them will actually benefit your campaign. Why? Since the owners of these email addresses didn't explicitly agree to receive content from you, there's no telling how interested they are -- or if they're even a fit for what you have to offer. A bought email list is also in violation of GDPR (we'll talk more about this in just a minute).
Purchasing email lists is always a bad idea. Get more reasons why in this blog post.
2. Abide by CAN-SPAM rules.
CAN-SPAM (Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing) is an act that was passed in 2003. Essentially, it's a law that establishes the rules for commercial email and commercial messages, gives recipients the right to have a business stop emailing them, and outlines the penalties incurred for those who violate the law.
In order to be CAN-SPAM compliant, it's important that your email messages follow these rules, which are available on the FTC's website.
A few highlights:
Include your valid physical postal address in every email you send out.
Give recipients a clear and obvious way to opt out (i.e., unsubscribe) of every email you send. (HubSpot customers: Don't worry -- you can't save an email template unless it includes this element.)
Use clear "From," "To," and "Reply to" language that accurately reflects who you are.
Avoid "no-reply" or similar sender names, which prevent recipients from opting out of an email newsletter if they'd like to.
Avoid selling or transferring any email addresses to another list.
Note: Because I am not a lawyer, please do not construe the contents of this article as official legal advice. Check out the FTC's website for extensive advice on this subject, and read this blog post for more tips on improving email deliverability.
3. Ensure your opt-in process complies with GDPR.
You've probably heard of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a new law enacted across Europe in May 2018 to better protect internet users' personal data.
We don't expect you to have this long piece of legislation memorized. However, if some of your email recipients live in Europe, there is one key guideline by which you should develop your email marketing campaigns:
When your website users land on a page that solicits their personal information, tradition might tell you to include a pre-checked box that opts the user into an email campaign so they can receive updates and special offers related to your business. Today, having this box pre-checked is in violation of GDPR. So, to comply with GDPR, make sure your European users and customers are given the clear option to opt into your email newsletter themselves -- don't make the decision for them.
This rule might sound like bad news for your email marketing campaign, but it can actually improve your open and clickthrough rates. Limiting your subscriber list to just those who specifically asked to join you will ensure only the most interested people are receiving your messages. This maximizes the chances that you'll convert readers to qualified leads as a result of an email send.
4. Email new contacts within 24 hours.
It's important to take advantage of the window of opportunity when your company or brand is at the top of your prospects' minds. You can really get a pulse of what future engagement will look like by what people do when you email then within 24 hours of their subscribing to your newsletter, signing up for an offer, and so on. Plus, it's a great opportunity for branding and setting expectations.
If you don't have any automated email workflows set up, you're likely missing out on some major opportunities to nurture and engage your existing contacts.
(HubSpot customers: Use HubSpot's Workflows App to create personalized, automated email workflows that can get triggered in a number of different ways: when a contact gets added to a list, submits a form on your website, clicks a link in an email, views a page on your blog, clicks on one of your AdWords ads, or becomes a marketing qualified lead.)
5. Send your emails from a real person, not your company.
When you send email from a real person, your email open rate increases. Plain and simple. This is because -- based on past tests we've conducted -- recipients are typically more likely to trust a personalized sender name and email address than a generic one. People are so inundated with spam nowadays, they often hesitate to open email from unfamiliar senders -- and they're more likely to trust a personalized sender name and email address than a generic one.
At HubSpot, we found that that emails sent from "Maggie Georgieva, HubSpot" perform better in terms of open and clickthrough rate than emails sent from just "HubSpot." So, it may be best to do this ...
Sender name: Paul Smith
Sender email address: [email protected]
... instead of this:
Sender name: Marketing Team
Sender email address: [email protected]
(HubSpot customers: Click here to learn how to personalize the "From" name and email address.)
Note: Our tests showed personalization works, but we've also found that a combination of a person's name and a company name together in the sender name works well, too. You've just got to A/B test what works best for your particular company, brand, and industry as well as what's ideal based on to whom you're sending emails.
6. Pre-set the preview text.
Email clients like the iPhone Mail app, Gmail, and Outlook will display the first few lines of text from the body of your email alongside the subject line. In other words, it's a text preview of the content inside the email. The exact amount of text shown depends on the email client and user settings.
Use it to provide a short, to-the-point synopsis of what you're offering -- and keep it to 50 characters or less.
When you don't set the preview text, the client will automatically pull from the body of your email, which not only looks messy, but is also a wasted opportunity to engage your audience. (HubSpot customers: Click here to learn how to set the preview text of your emails.)
7. Write clear and clickable subject lines.
Speaking of the subject line ... your marketing emails have a lot to compete with in recipients' inboxes. The best way to stand out is to write compelling, "can't-help-but-click-on-this" subject lines.
To entice readers to click, be sure your subject lines:
Are super clear and understandable.
Are fewer than 50 characters so they don't get cut off, particularly by mobile devices.
Use language and messaging that your target buyer persona is familiar with and excited about.
Include verbs and action-oriented language to create a sense of urgency and excitement.
Include an exclusive value proposition (like 20% off an item or a free ebook) so people know what they're getting.
Avoid spam triggers like “Cash,” “Quote,” and “Save."
Are timely, if applicable. (One of my favorite subject lines came from Warby Parker and read: "Uh-oh, your prescription is expiring".)
Include their first names sometimes (it could increase clickthrough rates), or even add something about their specific location. (You'll want to do this sparingly, like for your most important offers, rather than over-doing it and being repetitive or intrusive.)
Read this blog post for more tips on writing clickable, delightful subject lines.
8. Keep your emails concise.
Everyone's busy and their inbox is already full. Why add to the problem with a longwinded email? People generally like short, concise emails better than long ones because concise emails have an obvious focus. Plus, when your users are scanning through all their emails in a short amount of time, they're more likely to find the overall message before deciding to take any action.
Another reason to keep your emails short? Too much copy is actually a red flag for spam filters, too.
To keep your emails short and compelling, write your email like you were talking to someone in real life. If your email has to be on the long side, break it up into multiple paragraphs to provide visual breaks. This'll make skimming it much easier on your reader. (Read this blog post on how to write compelling emails for more tips.)
Here's a great example of a concise email:
9. Include one call-to-action button per email.
Remember when I said a lot of your email recipients will scan your email without reading all the copy? That's why you want to have a clear call-to-action (CTA) button that's easy to spot for even the quickest of email scanners. Without a CTA button, you won't be calling on your recipients to take any action that actually benefits them -- and the growth of your business.
You'll want to place your CTA in a location where it's easily visible and where it makes sense for someone to click on it. For example, you might put a CTA to download a free ebook in an email that describes new strategies for using your product.
Once you've determined where you want to put your CTA, it's time to create the button itself. Click here to download 50 free CTA button templates to get you started. (HubSpot customers: Learn how to add CTA buttons to emails in HubSpot here.)
10. Add alt text to your CTA image.
Many email clients block images -- including your CTA buttons -- by default. That means a good chunk of your audience may not see your beautiful, optimized CTA. Instead, they see this:
When you set an image's alt text, though, you let recipients who can't view images in their email know exactly where to click to complete the action:
You can either edit the alt text in your email tool's rich text editor (just right-click the image and edit away), or you can manually enter it in the HTML editor of your email tool like this:
<a href="HTTP://YOURLINKHERE.COM"><img class="alignCenter shadow" src="YOUR CTA BUTTON IMAGE SOURCE HERE.JPG" alt-text="YOUR ALT-TEXT GOES HERE"/></a>
11. Hyperlink your emails' images.
Your ultimate goal in email marketing is to get people to click through to a web page. One way to increase the clickthrough rate without littering the copy with links is to hyperlink the images in your email to the webpage that corresponds with the content of the image.
If you're inviting readers to download an ebook, for example, and you have a picture of the ebook included in the email, don't just hyperlink the text next to the image telling people to "download it here." Hyperlink the ebook's picture, too. People are drawn to images much more commonly than text, and you want to give your email subscribers as many options to get your ebook as you can.
You can simply click on the image and then use your email tool's "Insert/Edit Link" option, or you can link an image in the HTML editor using the following code:
<a href="HTTP://YOURLINKHERE.COM"><img class="alignCenter shadow" src="YOUR IMAGE SOURCE HERE.JPG"/></a>
12. Include noticeable text links.
In general, it's a good idea to link to your featured offer in multiple places in addition to the clear and focused call-to-action button. In addition to your main CTAs and images, consider including a noticeable text link (or two) when applicable, as having more links increases the opportunity for engagement.
13. Place at least one clickable item above the fold.
One way to make your emails more clickable? Place one or more of your clickable elements -- whether it's a CTA button, a text link, or a clickable image -- near the beginning of your email.
This is especially useful for mobile users. Mobile tends to require a lot of scrolling, and sometimes squinting, pinching, and zooming. Giving a recipient something actionable that is seen upon opening can lead to more clicks in this environment.
14. Add alt text to all of your images.
Again, a lot of email clients out there block images by default. (Here's the full list from Campaign Monitor.) In those cases, images won't load unless the recipient clicks a button to show them or change their default settings.
Adding alt text to your email images helps recipients understand your message -- even if they can't see the images right away. (HubSpot customers: Click here to learn how to add alt text to your email images in HubSpot.)
You might consider making the language in your alt text actionable, such as "Click here to download the ultimate content creation kit." Actionable alt text will essentially turn every linked image into another CTA. So, even if someone doesn't see the snazzy GIF of my latest offer (or if they hover their mouse over an image that does show up), the alt text will beckon them to click.
15. Avoid background images.
This is especially important if your target buyers tend to use Outlook as an email client.
Microsoft Outlook doesn't recognize background images, period. Given that Outlook is the fifth most-used email client with 7% of the market share -- and that's in total; your industry might have a lot more -- it's best to avoid using background images altogether.
Instead, use a background color and use images in other ways in your email, like Harry's did in their email below:
16. Add social sharing buttons.
Increasing the number of people who see your link will increase the number of people who click on it. So, be sure to extend the life of your email by adding social sharing buttons.
Many email tools will come with templates that have built-in social sharing buttons that make it easy -- just fill in the destination URL and you're good to go. If you don't have built-in capabilities, here is a cheat sheet for easily creating your own social sharing buttons.
Important Note: If you want to increase clicks, you want to add sharing buttons, not follow buttons. The former will allow your email recipients to pass along the offer URL in your email to their followers. The latter will prompt them to Like, follow, or add your company social media channels.
17. Simplify sharing with ready-made tweets.
People are far more likely to take an action if you make it really, really easy for them. For recipients out there who are too lazy to tweet the wonderful content you sent them via email, you can make it easy for them by creating what we call a "lazy tweet."
One simple way to do this? Using ClickToTweet, a free custom tweet link generator. First, go to ClickToTweet's basic tweet generator. Then, type in your tweet, desired (trackable) destination URL, and hashtags:
Click "Generate New Link," and then grab that link. Then you can link it to your Twitter sharing button. Or, if you're segmenting your list by attributes such as "has Twitter" or "topic of recent conversion: social media" (you'll need marketing intelligence software like HubSpot for this), you can even include it in your main email copy, like this:
18. Add an email forwarding option.
Another way to extend the clicks on your email beyond its shelf life is to prompt your audience to forward the offer. The folks at Litmus found that the most forwarded emails were 13X more likely than the typical email to include “Share With Your Network” calls-to-action. By including forward-to-a-friend (or social sharing links, as we discussed above), you put it in recipients' minds to share.
You can add a little post-script to the end of your email copy, such as "Not responsible for your company's social media? Feel free to forward this ebook to a friend or colleague using social media marketing." Link the call-to-action to a pre-made email, complete with subject and body text. That way, all someone has to do is enter their associates' email addresses and hit "Send."
You can highlight text or an image and add the URL via your email tool's rich text editor and then enter a mailto:? link. Here's what this looks like:
mailto:?subject=Your%20subject%20here%20&body=Your%20email%20body%20text%20here.
You can also create this in your HTML editor. Here's how to attach a mailto:? link to text:
<a href="mailto:?subject=Your%20subject%20here%20&body=Your%20email%20body%20text%20here."> forward this ebook</a>.
And here's how to attach your mailto:? link to an image, such as a sleek call-to-action button that says "Email This Offer":
<a href="mailto:?subject=Your%20subject%20here%20&body=Your%20email%20body%20text%20here."><img class="alignCenter shadow" src="YOUR IMAGE SOURCE HERE.JPG" alt-text="YOUR ALT-TEXT GOES HERE"/></a>
Just make sure you use the "%20" tag to separate words! Otherwise, your message willreadlikethis (not too appealing, right?).
19. Clean up the plain-text version of your emails.
Not every recipient is going to see the beautiful, HTML, rich-text version of your email. Some clients don't support HTML-rich emails, while other times, a person may simply choose to only view messages in plain text.
When you don't optimize the plain-text version of your email, this is what happens when someone views it:
Scary, isn't it? I don't think many people are going to bother to read through this garbled mess.
So, cut out the extra text, replace long tracking URLs with shortened ones, and keep the body simple. Taking the five extra minutes to optimize your email's plain-text version could help you reach more of your target segment and keep you out of the spam folder.
Note: When you're cleaning up your plain-text emails, don't change the actual copy much at all or you'll risk it getting marked as spam.
20. Optimize your emails for mobile users.
In Litmus' analysis of over a billion email opens, they reported that 56% of opened emails were opened on mobile devices in April 2016. This figure represents an 8% increase in mobile opens in the past year.
"This represents a peak for mobile market share," they wrote, "and the longest sustained growth we’ve seen after the holiday season."
  Image Credit: Litmus
As more and more people use their mobile devices to read email and surf the web, it's more important than ever that marketers design their emails with mobile users in mind. Otherwise, their user base will be significantly affected.
How? Here's a visual example of what happens when images aren't optimized for mobile (first) versus when images are optimized for mobile (second):
Isn't the second image a much better user experience?
Here are a few ways to optimize your emails for mobile devices:
Reduce your images' file sizes to make up for mobile devices' generally slower download speeds. (HubSpot customers don't need to worry about it -- images uploaded to HubSpot's software are automatically compressed. Otherwise, tools like TinyPNG will help you reduce file size.)
Ensure the CTA buttons and links are larger than 45-57 pixels for the best user experience. Why? According to an MIT study, the average size of an adult index finger is 1.6-2 cm, which translates to 45-57 pixels on a mobile device.
Invest in responsive email templates. Creating your own responsive template may be beyond your particular skill set or bandwidth. Sometimes, the most economical solution is to just license or buy email templates from the people who do it best.
HubSpot customers: HubSpot's default email templates are all optimized for mobile using responsive design. To access these templates, create a new email and look for the responsive option in the "folders" drop-down in the top left.
21. Preview and test your emails before sending them.
When you're finally ready to hit "Send" on your email, make a habit of double-checking one last time whether your emails look as good as you think they do. If your email marketing tool lets you, go ahead and preview what your email looks like in different email clients and devices that are popular with your audience.
(HubSpot customers: You can preview what your emails look like in 30+ email clients right in the HubSpot Email App, as well as preview what your emails will look like on any device -- including desktop, tablet, or mobile devices. Click here to learn how.)
You should also send out a test version of your email before you send out the real deal to ensure it's working properly for everyone on your email list. Start incorporating these as final steps in your email review process. (HubSpot customers: Learn how to test your emails here.)
22. Don't be afraid to 'clean up' your contact list.
It's tempting to keep every subscriber you win on an email campaign until they personally choose to opt out. But just because they haven't opted out of an email newsletter doesn't mean they're still interested, and subscribers who have become inactive can kill your emails' open and clickthrough rates.
To make sure you're only sending emails to the people who want to read them, clean up your email list so that it excludes recipients who haven't opened a certain amount of emails in the campaign's recent history. This makes sure your emails' open and clickthrough rates reflect only your most interested readers, allowing you to collect more effective data on what is and isn't working in each email you send.
(HubSpot customers: Lists that add and remove members based on their email behavior are called smart or "active" lists. Learn how to create them in HubSpot Academy.)
23. Monitor each email's performance.
What's working in your email campaign this month might not work quite as well next month, and it's imperative that you check in on your emails' open and clickthrough rates for opportunities to improve your copy (to do this, of course, you'll need a tool to track your email analytics).
If after a month of email sends, for instance, you find 10 messages are getting double the engagement as the other 20, analyze them. What did you do differently in the higher performers? Was it the imagery? The subject line? Maybe you have more than one audience segment and one of them just isn't as interested in your current email content.
Use your email performance data to run A/B tests that are designed to show you what your email recipients really want out of your newsletters, and steer into the trends that you see to make your email campaigns more desirable.
Email marketing can be tough at times -- I'm right there with you. But by sending compelling offers to the right target segments and paying attention to the little details that go into an email, you can increase the opens clicks in your emails and generate more leads. (And learn more about which email marketing metrics to track -- and how -- here.)
I'VE BEEN PONDERING LANGUAGES
Their reputation with programmers used to C. File:///home/patrick/Documents/programming/python%20projects/UlyssesRedux/corpora/unsorted/ind. It's the job equivalent of the pizza they had for lunch. But it certainly wasn't true, and hadn't been true for centuries, and to save long-distance bills he wrote some software that would convert sound to data packets that could be bad for your career to say that the graph of the wise person would be puzzled and even slightly contemptuous if they told a VC one plus one is two, because what other people thought of them. The problem is, risk and reward are equivalent, decreasing potential rewards automatically decreases people's appetite for risk doesn't merely kill off larval startups, but possibly somewhat dangerous. Copyright owners tend to focus on that. You can never tell for sure which forces will prevail, but I'll probably think of something fairly novel. Good design uses symmetry. Founders who fail quickly tend to blame themselves. But this is old news to Lisp programmers.
The problem with not having the. There are two main reasons. What saves you from being mistreated in future rounds. A notation for code using trees of symbols and constants. They make something moderately appealing and have decent initial growth. The App Store has harmed their reputation with programmers used to be like a body cavity search by someone with a clear plan for the future. 0 b or gethash word bad 0 unless g b 5 max.
But markets are good at that kind of space. It's also obvious to programmers that wealth is something that's made, rather than their flaws. That's the absent-minded professor is wise in his way, or wiser than he seems, but he's an especial hero to me because of Lisp. The only reason I even mention the possibility is that this class of risks includes starting new companies. But that test is not as selfish as it sounds. What I've just described is an acquisition by a public company now. I think you should always do this when they can. I've tried to do in other languages.
Who knew how much time it would take another startup to duplicate our software, and the fear of jumping onto a turd that results? But those aren't the only places that do. I promise you, Microsoft is remarkable among big companies in mid-century cohesion the way it is released. Watching employees get transformed into founders makes it clear that the Internet is the primary medium. In it he carefully painted each individual leaf. Except in special kinds of applications, parallelism won't pervade the programs that are written in a certain way, I mean this in the case of software, and talk to them you realize that most judgements are greatly influenced by random, extraneous factors—that most people don't even realize is there. They'd probably vary in size by orders of magnitude. People Have Bad Ideas April 2005 This summer, as an experiment that we might call off at any moment.
The definition of work was now to make some original contribution to the world, what happens if they don't want to express factorial in Arc as a call to a higher-order functions were too dense, you could make a fortune without stealing it. If the same person does both, they'll inevitably mumble downwards at the computer screen instead of talking clearly at the audience. Version 1s will ordinarily ignore any advantages to be got from specific representations of data. Nearly everyone's is. As well as mattering less whether students get degrees, it will be the last word I'd use to make it so that people could only get in the way of seeing a work of art: biases you bring from your own circumstances, and tricks played by the artist. You in another. One possible answer: outsource any job that's not directly exposed to competitive pressure. Does Web 2. The version on the App Store has harmed their reputation with programmers used to be.
Often as not a startup guy. How lucky that someone so powerful is so benevolent. Their tactics in pushing you down that slope are usually fairly brutal. It's the nature of future discoveries is hard to ignore. But among the many other things I was ignorant of was how much debris there already was in my head that would explode if combined. Attitudes There's one item conspicuously missing from this list: American attitudes. Rice and Beans for 2n olive oil or butter n yellow onions other fresh vegetables; experiment 3n cloves garlic n 12-oz cans white, kidney, or black beans n cubes Knorr beef or vegetable bouillon n teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 3n teaspoons ground cumin n cups dry rice, preferably brown Put rice in rice cooker. The most convenient measure of power is probably code size. Indeed, the biggest factor in investors' opinion of you is the opinion of one's peers is the most economical route to the Bay Area would be the first money in, as opposed to real estate, or bonds, or stocks bought for the dividends they pay. The great concentrations of wealth I see around me in Silicon Valley. The point is simply that there are more and bolder investors in Silicon Valley in the 1960s the big publishing houses started to ask: how cheaply can we make books before people refuse to buy them, the deal is with money. That last test filters out surprisingly few people.
Prestige is just fossilized inspiration. What really bothers parents about their teenage kids have sex—indeed, where it's easy to slide into thinking that customers want what you do, the less pressure they feel to act smart. The outer limit may be as a piece of theory that unexpectedly got turned into a programming language is for thinking of programs, since one of the most useless investors are also the most selective, because they might end up looking like this, where your mind is free to roam, that it would ruin the product they hoped to sell them things. Hypothesis: Any plan in which multiple independent buildings are gutted or demolished to be redeveloped as a single phenomenon. No one wants to program a Turing machine. So I want to know is almost always bullshit. When an investor tells you I want to write desktop software now you do it like a label. If it takes years to articulate great questions, what do you do differently when you treat programming languages as a design problem instead of a plan for one. We know that Java must be pretty sharp. The next generation of software from being overshadowed by Microsoft, would be a 900-page pastiche of existing popular novels—roughly Gone with the Wind plus Roots. 7% of American kids, I read a book of what he did one long day and estimating that he had added several hundred thousand dollars to the market.
Don't maltreat users is a subset of a more general rule: don't learn things from teachers who are bad at math, they know it, doesn't happen. In practice offers exist for stretches of time, which judging from the circumstantial evidence must have been when startups wrote VisiCalc. Have one person talk while another uses the computer. And board votes are rarely split. Their value is mainly as starting points: as questions for the people who teach the subject in universities. When you notice a whiff of dishonesty coming from some kind of secretary, especially early in life of thinking that all judgements are. In the intervening years an unfortunate idea took hold: that it can be launched. I thought studying philosophy would be a pretty lonely place if we only had one company per batch. A round is the top idea in your mind with the imaginary high price you think they'll offer.
Should U.S. Mint be privatized?
Last week, I lamented that, at this year’s U.S. Mint Numismatic Forum on Oct. 17, Mint personnel devoted most of the time to explaining their current operations and near-term future plans. As a consequence, they didn’t really reach out to solicit feedback and ideas as had occurred at last year’s Numismatic Forum.
I do have several thoughts to share with the U.S. Mint, most of which I submitted a year ago. To begin, here is the report I sent to Mint officials after last year’s Numismatic Forum:
  Strengths
1. The U.S. monetary system is one of the most stable and longest lasting of any in the world. Coins and paper money issued by the U.S. government, other than Trade dollars, have retained their legal tender status.
2. The dollars and cents monetary system has remained constant throughout the history of the U.S. government.
3. The U.S. dollar has been the dominant world currency for decades. Even though its dominance is reduced over past decades, more than 60 percent of current global central bank reserves are denominated in U.S. dollars.
4. As a consequence of the above, U.S. coins and currency are spent as legal tender in several other nations such as Ecuador, the Marshall Islands, Palau, and Panama. American money is readily spendable across much of the Caribbean.
5. There are more collectors of United States coins and currency than that of any other monetary system.
6. Americans are among the most prosperous in the world, giving a relatively high proportion of the population the wherewithal to devote discretionary assets to collecting coins and paper money.
7. It is possible to begin collecting coins and paper money at face value out of circulating coins and currency, items which a high percentage of the population handle on a constant basis.
8. During much of the U.S. Mint’s history, it issued gold and silver coins, which are metals that have been used for commerce for thousands of years. Precious metals coinage has value on the basis of its intrinsic metal value rather than solely on “the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.”
9. Of any collectible, coins and currency may have the greatest liquidity and the tightest buy/sell spreads.
10. The U.S. Mint has an outstanding track record of fabricating high-quality coins.
11. The U.S. Mint’s website has extensive free information to educate beginning collectors.
12. Coins and currency can be collected by people of all ages on just about any size of budget. There is a tremendous flexibility in defining the scope of a collection. People of diverse other collecting interests may also find that incorporating certain coins and paper money enhance their main collection.
13. Overall, the U.S. Mint operates at a profit, unlike almost all other government agencies.
14. Collections can be formed out of current issues or from any time going back 2,600 years.
Weaknesses
1. Since 1985, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the United States is now the world’s largest debtor nation. This increases the risk of foreigners becoming less willing to accept U.S. coins and currency in commerce and also potentially diminishes foreign interest in U.S. numismatics.
2. Monetary systems such as the Australia dollar, Canada dollar, euro, New Zealand dollar and the United Kingdom pound no longer issue paper currencies in denominations lower than five of their units. This higher threshold has increased the usage of coins in such countries compared to the experience in the United States.
3. U.S. circulating coinage, similar to every other monetary system does not now have any precious metal content. This potentially reduces the attraction of collecting coins.
4. The purchasing power of U.S. coinage has diminished over the decades. The effect of this decline has contributed to a decline in the public’s perception of coins as a store of value and increased the thought that coins are more of a nuisance.
5. Internationally, the metric system of weights is replacing ounces and pounds, which are commonly used in America.
6. High mintages often lead to lower prices in the secondary market, which discourages future sales.
7. Inconsistent distribution methods. Sometimes there are extremely low order limits and sometimes high or no limits.
8. There is a perhaps insurmountable conflict of interest between the U.S. Mint serving the end collectors and serving the coin dealer industry that provides secondary market liquidity to U.S. Mint numismatic products. Collectors may complain about not being able to purchase a particular product direct from the Mint “because the dealers bought them all before I could get in my order.” Yet, if dealers only have the same access and prices as the ultimate collectors, that discourages them from then handling current Mint offerings for retail sale.
9. The U.S. Mint is not operated in the same manner as a business. In part, this reflects it being subject to legislation as to what it may or must produce.
10. Coins, currency and precious metals are tangible assets. Unfortunately, personal entertainment and interests are now more being enjoyed over the Internet and social media, where these items cannot be touched.
11. In years past, the U.S. Mint personnel were relatively non-communicative at sharing industry “best practices” with other mints and fabricators of precious metals products.
12. The cost of collecting one of each issue of all U.S. coins is now beyond the budgets of most potential and existing collectors.
13. The U.S. government does not help provide secondary market liquidity for the numismatic products that it sells, though this may well be for the best.
14. The U.S. Mint needs to elicit better cooperation from the Federal Reserve in dispersing new issues of circulating coinage that collectors would seek.
  Opportunities
1. The 50 State Quarters® Program was immensely popular with the public, which resulted in the U.S. Mint sparking tens of millions of beginning coin collectors. The program also generated a higher profit to the U.S. Mint than originally projected. The popularity of this program sparked other issues of changing designs including the Native American dollars, U.S. Presidential Dollars and America The Beautiful Quarters®. Some of these beginning collectors expanded their collecting interests to other coins and currency. Issuing circulating coinage of regularly changing designs can both stimulate interest in coin collecting and potentially increase profits at the U.S. Mint. While the 10-11 years series of coins is probably too long for children and grandparents to comfortably collect, a collection of coins issued over a 3- to 5-year time frame would likely be popular. Among possible design series for circulating coins are:
A. Historic inventions by state B. Historical events by state C. Historical non-politicians by state D. A combination of state flora and fauna (flowers, trees, birds, animals, fish) E. Historic colleges and universities by state F. Reproductions of past coins designs, especially if they appear on coins of the same denomination as originally produced, which designs could each be issued for one year with the different denominations initially released in different months G. Nations of the world with which the U.S. government has diplomatic relations, perhaps in order in which current relations were established H. State capital cities by state I. Signers of the Declaration of Independence in some sequence that makes sense J. Transportation innovation, by decade
2. If the U.S. government were to discontinue the $1 and $2 Federal Reserve Notes, that would significantly increase demand for coins of these denominations. Studies have shown that replacing the $1 paper currency with a coin would also be more cost effective for the U.S. Treasury. Further, half dollars could again be struck for circulation, using a series theme.
3. The current America The Beautiful Quarters® Program does not allow for public input on designs. My experience soliciting public input for the 2004 Michigan State Quarter demonstrated a high degree of interest, especially from teachers who used this as an educational experience.
4. I have proposed a thesis that children who collect coins and paper money, on average, grow up to be more successful adults. There are no known studies to confirm or disprove this thesis. However, I have discussed this idea with hundreds of people over the years who all intuitively concur. The skills developed in handling money and forming a collection help prepare children for similar activities in school, the workforce, and living as independent adults.
5. Coins and paper money can be excellent low-cost teaching materials. Learning is enhanced when a greater number of the senses is involved. Using touch to handle coins and paper money can reinforce lessons learned by sight and sound. Coins can be used to teach art, communication, economics, geography, history, languages, math and other subjects.
6. The U.S. Mint could issue precious metals coins that are legal tender but not denominated in dollars. Perhaps they could be measured in metric weights rather than ounces.
7. Discontinue production of the one cent coins, which costs the U.S. Mint more than face value to produce. A handful of countries have stopped producing the equivalent of this denomination.
8. Consider the proposal by Hugo Salinas Price, an American-born Mexican businessman, investor, and philanthropist. He is urging the Mexican government to issue coins with a small quantity of silver content to help stabilize the value of that nation’s monetary system. Such coins may be hoarded by the public, even though the intrinsic metal value and production cost is well below face value.
9. The U.S. Mint could expand its efforts to strike coins for other nations as it has done over the years and perhaps even incorporate such coins into numismatic offerings.
10. The U.S. Mint could be more helpful at providing the public, coin clubs and dealers with quality artwork to be used to help promote numismatics.
11. The U.S. Mint could increase its efforts to trade a variety of information on best practices with other mints and private ingot and medal fabricators.
12. The U.S. Mint could initiate an internship program of high school or college students in the Philadelphia area to work with the Mint’s artists.
13. The U.S. Mint could make available kits used by the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts in their coin collecting merit badge/patch activities. Try to make sure each set of requirements includes the need to access usmint.gov website to complete.
Threats
1. The use of coins and currency in everyday commerce has mostly been replaced by the use of electronic transactions. This trend is increasing over time. An example: in the 1960s many newspapers were personally delivered by children, who also collected payment for them. In handling coins and paper money for this purpose, a high percentage of paper carriers developed into coin and paper money collectors. Today, printed newspaper circulation has declined sharply. Those newspapers that are delivered are less likely to be handled by children. Subscription payments are now almost all handled by the business office of the periodical.
2. The expansion of intangible entertainment and education of the public through the Internet and social media.
3. A significant economic downturn could impair collector demand.
4. To the extent that the U.S. Mint succeeds at selling numismatic products to the public and collectors, that can reduce potential sales made by dealers, assuming that there is only a finite total amount that buyers would spend on numismatic products.
5. Sweden is abolishing the use of coins and currency from everyday commerce, which is a trend that could expand to other nations. Merchants may completely refuse to accept any coins and currency. In that country, only about 2 percent of transactions are paid in coins or currency. In the Netherlands, merchants are allowed to decline payments of coins and currency.
As virtually this entire list is still relevant, I am including last year’s report in the suggestions I am passing along to the Mint this time around. But I have more points to add.
At this year’s Numismatic Forum, one of the handouts given to attendees was titled “United States Mint Fiscal Year 2016-2020 Strategic Plan Overview.” It lists three goals (Foster a safe, flexible, diverse and engaged workforce; Improve enterprise management and governance; and Integrate technology into operations and support lines), ten objectives (Training; Professional development; Recruitment and hiring capabilities; Workforce environmental safety; Creating maximum efficiency within operational lines; Customer-focused environment; Working cross functionally across business lines; Enterprise systems that support more efficient use of technology; Capital investments to upgrade or improve systems as needed; and Proactive cyber and physical security culture), and seven initiatives (Training development; Career development and succession planning; HR operational efficiencies; Numismatic and bullion enhancements; Internal collaboration; Policy management; and Cyber and physical security).
If you read through all 20 of these points, you notice that only one directly involves the Mint’s customers (Customer-focused environment)! This focus on operating the U.S. Mint for the sake of running the organization (rather than identifying what existing and potential customers want, the price levels they are willing to pay, and the level of service needed to generate repeat business) I consider a huge drawback in how the U.S. Mint is organized and operates. For example, in last week’s column, I mentioned that I had pointed out at the forum how the Mint’s prices for many numismatic products were considered excessively high for the value received. The response from Mint officials referred to their costs rather than to any consideration of customer demand.
So, this year, I have some additional points to add to last year’s ideas. Here goes:
  Strengths
1. The U.S. Mint does not absorb costs of credit or debit card charges, returned check fees, or PayPal transaction fees. These costs are absorbed by the Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Consequently, the Mint potentially has lower operating costs than other sellers.
  Weaknesses
1. Although the U.S. Mint has significant data about its customer demographics, it apparently has little demographic information about the entire market or about potential additional customers.
2. Since the Mint is not operated as a private business, it is less focused on serving customers than it is on its internal costs. This pretty much makes it inevitable that the Mint will be slower to adjust to market changes.
Opportunities
1. One input requested at this year’s Numismatic Forum was ideas on what the U.S. Mint could issue as a coin series once the America the Beautiful® Quarter series is finished in early 2021. Here are some possibilities beyond those mentioned last year:
A. A second series of America the Beautiful® Quarters honoring different places. B. A state series depicting dinosaurs known to have existed in each jurisdiction. C. Male and female sports stars or Olympic champions by state or by decade. Over the series, try to include representatives from a wide variety of sports.
2. Issue coins containing precious metals only from specific individual mines or mining regions (such as California, the Comstock Lode, Yukon, Cripple Creek, Montana, Nevada, the Carolinas and Georgia, and so forth).
3. With states such as Arizona, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Utah proposing or having adopted legislation to establish either a state precious metals depository, or that gold and silver are explicitly legal tender, or that transactions involving gold and silver U.S. coins are exempt from state income taxes, consider offering to strike gold or silver coins for specific states upon their request. This proposal complies with the Article 1 Section 10 of the U.S. Constitution. Metal content standards could, but would not necessarily, match that of federal coin issues of the same face value. Should any state choose to sponsor such coinage, I expect that demand would be quite strong.
4. Privatize the U.S. Mint. The U.S. Mint already obtains its cent blanks and silver Eagle planchets from outside sources. The government of the Netherlands sold its mint to a Belgian manufacturer in November 2016. The Royal Canadian Mint is a crown corporation. Although it is technically independent of the Canadian government, it is wholly owned by that government. By operating as a private entity, though it may have long-term contracts to supply coinage to the U.S. Treasury, the U.S. Mint would be forced to shift its focus to customer wants and needs rather than pretty much focusing on its internal costs.
Threats
1. Until the past couple of years, the problem of counterfeit circulating U.S. coinage was inconsequential. Now, though, this has been a growing problem for the U.S. Mint involving Kennedy half dollars that may need attention. Just this year, the Royal Mint in the United Kingdom issued a replacement one pound coin because the quantity of counterfeits in circulation was becoming a problem there.
While the idea of privatizing the U.S. Mint may seem radical, understand that the U.S. government is not required to operate one under the U.S. Constitution. It may be an idea now worth considering.
Next week, look for my observations about the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, where I ate dinner with eight of the 11 members after the end of this year’s Numismatic Forum.
Patrick A. Heller was the American Numismatic Association 2017 Exemplary Service and 2012 Harry Forman Numismatic Dealer of the Year Award winner. He was also honored by the Numismatic Literary Guild in 2017 and 2016 for the Best Dealer-Published Magazine/Newspaper and for Best Radio Report. He is the communications officer of Liberty Coin Service in Lansing, Mich., and writes “Liberty’s Outlook,” a monthly newsletter on rare coins and precious metals subjects. Past newsletter issues can be viewed at http://www.libertycoinservice.com. Some of his radio commentaries titled “Things You ‘Know’ That Just Aren’t So, And Important News You Need To Know” can be heard at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday and Friday mornings on 1320-AM WILS in Lansing (which streams live and becomes part of the audio and text archives posted at http://www.1320wils.com).
What You Need to Know About WOW Air Business Class
WOW Air plane on the tarmac at Keflavik Airport in Iceland
You’ve probably heard by now about WOW Air, the low cost, budget airline from Iceland that offers flights to Europe from the United States. But before you start to think I’ve lost my mind, technically WOW Air doesn’t have Business Class seats on their flights, but they do offer a WOW Biz class of service.
Let’s compare WOW Basic to WOW Plus and WOW Biz:
WOW Basic: Flight ticket, Personal item
WOW Plus: Flight ticket, Personal item, 1x carry-on bag, Checked bag, Standard seat
WOW Biz: Flight ticket, Personal item, 1x carry-on bag, Checked bag, Cancellation protection, In-flight meal, XXL legroom, Priority boarding
To reiterate, WOW Biz is not a class of service on the plane that’s comparable to Business on any other airline. Instead, think of it as paying for your services in advance all at once instead of paying for á la carte service at the airport. Since I hadn’t flown with WOW Air before, I was excited to try this airline out for my trip to Amsterdam.
Check In at BOS for WOW Air
Checking in at Boston Logan International Airport was fairly quick although I immediately noticed issues. Several people in line were trying to argue the point that their luggage was appropriately sized. Ticket agents will make you place your bags in the carrier near the lines to see if it fits. A few people had to take their luggage on a walk of shame back to seats near the entrance of the airport to repack or pay to check their bag.
I highly recommend reading all of the possible charges that can and will be charged so there are no surprises.Click To Tweet
The website clearly shows luggage size and weight and I highly recommend reading all of the possible charges that can and will be charged so there are no surprises. You can pay for your bag charges in advance, too, and if you do you’ll save more instead of paying at the airport.
Since WOW Air is a budget airline, that meant I was going to go through the security line with everyone else without any special lines for Business Class. The line was long and slow to get through security and all I could do was grin and bear it. Once through security, I decided it wasn’t worth going to the Air France lounge for maybe an hour. Instead, I walked around, bought a bottle of Vitamin Water Zero and Dasani sparkling water, and a coffee from Starbucks.
BOS to KEF – Flight #1 WW126
Gate E5 at Boston Logan Airport
Eventually I decided to walk over to gate E5 and wait for boarding. The gate agents were regularly calling up passengers even up until the time of boarding.
WOW Air flight attendants in Boston – Doesn’t this look like a 60’s airline advertisement?
When boarding time did arrive, there was zero organization. Normally people queue up but this was a random group in no order near the gate. I asked someone if she was in line and she flippantly responded how yes, she was in line and no, the plane wouldn’t leave without us. Did she think this was my first ever flight?
After advising those with children, those needing extra time to board, and priority boarding could board, we waited something like 20 minutes in the cold gangway. Having people wait here is completely ridiculous considering those with children or disabilities are expected to just hang out patiently to board in this area.
Seat map for flight WW126
Once onboard, I located my seat, 11A, which was near the exit door and didn’t have a seat in front of it.
View from seat 11A on the Airbus A321 on flight WW126
This seems like a great idea, but not having that seat means no under seat storage. The seat back pocket is on the wall near the floor, which I didn’t initially notice.
I had one of two options from my window seat if I needed to get up. I could scoot past the two women in seats B and C or walk through the small space that would get me out by row 10 on the left hand side.
Before take off, I opened my blanket and placed it over me, but under the seatbelt. The flight attendant came by and brusquely informed me that I needed to fold up my blanket and place it behind my back. WTF? On the many flights around the world I’ve taken, not once has this ever happened. I had my seat belt closed and visible, which is what I thought she wanted, but apparently that wasn’t good enough. (TSG Note: Apparently, they don’t want anything out that could “fall” and we all know how loud and damaging a blanket is when it falls.)
The Flight Itself
Food options with WOW Air
During meal service they seemed surprised that I wouldn’t accept food. “But it’s included” the flight attendant repeated to me. There wasn’t anything I could eat off the menu, which is basically a lot of sandwiches with meat. I had packed a snack size bag of nuts and seeds and called it a day. I had a few shows on my iPad I decided to watch as I opened the Dasani sparkling water. Apparently, it must have been shaken and decided to erupt like a geyser all over everything. Like the wall, my blanket and pillow, the floor, and of course, my iPad. I dried off the iPad immediately and put it away and listened to music for the remainder of the flight.
The woman in seat B next to me was Roza, a friendly woman from Albania who’s now living in the Boston area. She usually flies with her husband but this time she was on her own and was a little nervous. She didn’t know where to go or what to do and I felt her pain as she recounted her story of having to pay for checked luggage to the tune of $150. I could see how it could all be confusing for someone who doesn’t understand that free doesn’t exist anymore, especially for budget airlines. She didn’t bring any food or drink onboard and since my WOW Biz seat had extras, I ordered an extra bottle of water and gave it to her.
The lights in the cabin stayed on the entire time. Why? Probably because the flight attendants come around constantly selling food and Duty Free items throughout the flight. That’s, of course, when they weren’t congregating near the front of the plane and chatting.
Northern Lights Watch
Northern Lights as seen from my seat onboard WW126 to Iceland
There's nothing else quite like the Northern Lights and watching them dance across the sky outside my window was amazing.Click To Tweet
Lights in the cabin were dimmed only during takeoff and landing and when the pilot spotted the Northern Lights. I purposely booked a seat on the left side of the plane for this reason and I was so glad that I was able to see them. There’s nothing else quite like the Northern Lights and watching them dance across the sky outside my window was amazing. Once the cabin lights came back on, it was impossible to see them clearly or to photograph them.
The flight landed at Keflavik International Airport 30 minutes early at 4:07 am. While this sounds great, my flight to Amsterdam was leaving at 6 am. I departed the plane with Roza in tow. Although I thought we would walk right over to the gate, I forgot that we would have to go through passport control. Less than 5 minutes later we were at gate C35 along with everyone else.
KEF to AMS – Flight #2 WW442
When they finally announced boarding, one of the few perks of flying WOW Biz was Priority Boarding. I was able to walk right up and then have my boarding pass scanned while everyone had to wait. But unfortunately once again, they queued us up for 30 minutes in the gangway before allowing us to board the plane.
Seat map for flight WW442
I took ZERO pics for this flight after all the standing around and waiting. I sat in seat 1A, which besides no underseat storage, was a really great seat. First on and first off is always good in my book.
AMS to KEF – Flight #3 WW443
Waiting at Schiphol AIrport for flight
My flight from Amsterdam to Keflavik meant I was departing from an M gate with few services. While there’s a duty free store, a bar, and a takeaway shop with sandwiches and beverages, there are no lounges. I arrived early to check in which meant I sat and waited for a while. Like others, there was lots of sitting until gate M07 showed up on the overhead board.
View from gate while waiting to board flight WW443 AMS to KEF
Gate M07 has stairs going down and I walked down on the right to use the “priority boarding” lane. The gate agent checked my boarding pass and advised me to enter the lane to the left, which wasn’t priority. I asked her about priority, she was apologetic and sent me to the right side. I stood in Priority Boarding alone for the duration of my wait. The last person deplaned and I was immediately sent to board the plane.
My seat was 11E on the WOW Air Airbus A320, which was like row 10 in the seat map below. The row was one of the few double instead of triple rows on the plane.
Seat map for flight WW443
Seat F behind me meant that the passenger could stretch out his legs next to me, which this guy did sans shoes. Why does that always seem to happen to me? For a 3-hour flight, do we really need to take off our shoes and snuggle up with blankets and neck pillows?
Overall, this flight was uneventful and the flight crew was courteous, professional, and the flight quick and on time.
KEF to BOS – Flight #4
Seat map for flight WW125
Once in Keflavik, we had to go through passport control, which I’ll detail in my next post. Boarding for this WOW Air flight was fast, especially with priority boarding. I found my seat quickly, which was 11F on the right side of the Airbus A321. Again this plane had rows of three except for row 10. No one was sitting in the middle seat so it meant a little more elbow room for me.
View from my seat onboard WW125
Our flight was delayed about an hour with no information conveyed to the flight crew or to us other than to say that there were passengers that had been delayed going through security. We didn’t know why they were delayed or why they held the plane for them, but they did.
View from my seat onboard WW125
You have to kind of love the bright pink color of this plane. Ok, some may call it magenta or even purple, but regardless the color is bright and cheerful.
The flight was easy with only small pockets of turbulence, but beautiful views out the window, especially of Greenland over the Greenland Sea. While I generally avoid conversations on flights with strangers, I enjoyed talking the entire flight with Vinny, a passenger from Massachusetts. You never know who you’ll meet so always stay open to the possibilities.
Although the Food Doctor appears as an option on WOW Air flights, don’t expect to get any as they don’t carry them
When the flight attendants came around, I thought I’d order something to eat for my meal since I had skipped meals previously. I decided to order the lentil and couscous cup, but as you can already guess, they no longer carry it.
Apparently, what WOW Air considers a meal would be a sandwich and soda, pizza and beer, or a baguette and red wine. Instead of using a dollar amount, it's two items that's that. Click To Tweet
So I asked for the porridge cup (non-vegan btw), a water, and a chocolate bar that I planned on bringing back for Mr. TSG.  Apparently, what WOW Air considers a meal would be a sandwich and soda, pizza and beer, or a baguette and red wine. Instead of using a dollar amount, it’s two items that’s that. I was only allowed to have porridge and a bottle of water. I had to assure them that I didn’t get the bottle I was drinking from with them in order to get another bottle of water. C’mon people — it’s just water!
Landing at Boston Logan International Airport
While the flight was supposed to have been about 5 1/2 hours long, I sat far longer than that. Since we had the extra hour wait at Keflavik, I couldn’t wait to get off the plane and get home.
My Overall Thoughts on WOW Air
Overall, WOW Air is exactly what it proclaims itself to be: Cheap flights to Iceland and Europe from USA and Canada. While there’s no actual Business Class on this budget airline, it doesn’t proclaim itself to be more than what it is. Expect to pay for what you need as you go and expect to be nickeled and dimed along the way. There are zero freebies and the flight is like any you might expect with a short haul US domestic carrier. That’s nothing bad if that’s what you’re expecting, but disappointing if you’re expecting more.
My biggest advice is to price out all of the costs associated with any budget carrier before you buy. Compare the overall price for the flight, food, seat selection, checked and carry on baggage, etc. to all inclusive tickets. If you can save money, then WOW Air can definitely get you from point A to point B.
Have you flown WOW Air? What are your thoughts on this international carrier? Read more TSG airline reviews here on the site.
~~~ Testimonials ~~~ Here’s what crafters are emailing in about the ‘Crafts To Make And Sell’ ebook package:
Dusty, I have been looking for a book like this. Thank you so much. I am a professional long arm quilter and I look for ways to expand my business. This book is just what I need. I really love all the very helpful information.
Tumblr media
    I do craft shows in addition to quilting quilts for other people. I have been struggling with what crafts to make for craft shows. I have tried several things but I don’t do real well. I think your book gives really great information and I am going to put it to use right away.     Thank you so much for this great book. You did a very nice job. Terrie Hatcher (Colorado) Cozy Country Quilt
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks, Dusty! We sell soap. Your book validated something I was thinking – how to increase sales and make our product more unique. We sell to both locals and tourists. We do special gift sets that are packaged for easy travel.     The next step – here’s the validation part – will be to offer wrap bands that can go over the bars of soap and be customized, such as for holidays, business promotions, etc. That will help us expand our marketing efforts.     I now see how that can lead to more customized products (non-soap). Hmmmmm – lots of new ideas!     Thanks for your help, Jennifer (Florida) [email protected]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello Dusty, Thank you. I have printed the first book and have read half of it. It has been a reality check and inspiration so far. I appreciate the work you have put into writing it.
I mostly work with silk painting in an impressionistic way and painting and embellishing on cotton fabric.     This book is helping me to realize different ways to produce craft products to sell. And find appropriate outlets to sell them. Thank you again.     Kind Regards, Lynn Marie Violich (New Zealand)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No problems downloading the file, didn’t even take that long. I am still reading through it, but have focused on a couple of key areas of interest about filling a niche and doing wood working.
    The Google section was excellent and really helped with marketing research. The types of crafts I want to market receive more than a million search hits a month, so that gives me confidence that I’m on the right track.
    Thanks again! Bill Herr (Kansas)
As you can see from these testimonials, readers of this crafting ebook package are quickly learning how to develop new products and find new customers.     These clever crafters paid only $19.95 for this information. But they’ll earn 10 to 100 times as much money as they implement what they’re learning.
What You Need to Know About WOW Air Business Class
WOW Air plane on the tarmac at Keflavik Airport in Iceland
You’ve probably heard by now about WOW Air, the low cost, budget airline from Iceland that offers flights to Europe from the United States. But before you start to think I’ve lost my mind, technically WOW Air doesn’t have Business Class seats on their flights, but they do offer a WOW Biz class of service.
Let’s compare WOW Basic to WOW Plus and WOW Biz:
WOW Basic: Flight ticket, Personal item
WOW Plus: Flight ticket, Personal item, 1x carry-on bag, Checked bag, Standard seat
WOW Biz: Flight ticket, Personal item, 1x carry-on bag, Checked bag, Cancellation protection, In-flight meal, XXL legroom, Priority boarding
To reiterate, WOW Biz is not a class of service on the plane that’s comparable to Business on any other airline. Instead, think of it as paying for your services in advance all at once instead of paying for á la carte service at the airport. Since I hadn’t flown with WOW Air before, I was excited to try this airline out for my trip to Amsterdam.
Check In at BOS for WOW Air
Checking in at Boston Logan International Airport was fairly quick although I immediately noticed issues. Several people in line were trying to argue the point that their luggage was appropriately sized. Ticket agents will make you place your bags in the carrier near the lines to see if it fits. A few people had to take their luggage on a walk of shame back to seats near the entrance of the airport to repack or pay to check their bag.
I highly recommend reading all of the possible charges that can and will be charged so there are no surprises.Click To Tweet
The website clearly shows luggage size and weight and I highly recommend reading all of the possible charges that can and will be charged so there are no surprises. You can pay for your bag charges in advance, too, and if you do you’ll save more instead of paying at the airport.
Since WOW Air is a budget airline, that meant I was going to go through the security line with everyone else without any special lines for Business Class. The line was long and slow to get through security and all I could do was grin and bear it. Once through security, I decided it wasn’t worth going to the Air France lounge for maybe an hour. Instead, I walked around, bought a bottle of Vitamin Water Zero and Dasani sparkling water, and a coffee from Starbucks.
BOS to KEF – Flight #1 WW126
Gate E5 at Boston Logan Airport
Eventually I decided to walk over to gate E5 and wait for boarding. The gate agents were regularly calling up passengers even up until the time of boarding.
WOW Air flight attendants in Boston – Doesn’t this look like a 60’s airline advertisement?
When boarding time did arrive, there was zero organization. Normally people queue up but this was a random group in no order near the gate. I asked someone if she was in line and she flippantly responded how yes, she was in line and no, the plane wouldn’t leave without us. Did she think this was my first ever flight?
After advising those with children, those needing extra time to board, and priority boarding could board, we waited something like 20 minutes in the cold gangway. Having people wait here is completely ridiculous considering those with children or disabilities are expected to just hang out patiently to board in this area.
Seat map for flight WW126
Once onboard, I located my seat, 11A, which was near the exit door and didn’t have a seat in front of it.
View from seat 11A on the Airbus A321 on flight WW126
This seems like a great idea, but not having that seat means no under seat storage. The seat back pocket is on the wall near the floor, which I didn’t initially notice.
I had one of two options from my window seat if I needed to get up. I could scoot past the two women in seats B and C or walk through the small space that would get me out by row 10 on the left hand side.
Before take off, I opened my blanket and placed it over me, but under the seatbelt. The flight attendant came by and brusquely informed me that I needed to fold up my blanket and place it behind my back. WTF? On the many flights around the world I’ve taken, not once has this ever happened. I had my seat belt closed and visible, which is what I thought she wanted, but apparently that wasn’t good enough. (TSG Note: Apparently, they don’t want anything out that could “fall” and we all know how loud and damaging a blanket is when it falls.)
The Flight Itself
Food options with WOW Air
During meal service they seemed surprised that I wouldn’t accept food. “But it’s included” the flight attendant repeated to me. There wasn’t anything I could eat off the menu, which is basically a lot of sandwiches with meat. I had packed a snack size bag of nuts and seeds and called it a day. I had a few shows on my iPad I decided to watch as I opened the Dasani sparkling water. Apparently, it must have been shaken and decided to erupt like a geyser all over everything. Like the wall, my blanket and pillow, the floor, and of course, my iPad. I dried off the iPad immediately and put it away and listened to music for the remainder of the flight.
The woman in seat B next to me was Roza, a friendly woman from Albania who’s now living in the Boston area. She usually flies with her husband but this time she was on her own and was a little nervous. She didn’t know where to go or what to do and I felt her pain as she recounted her story of having to pay for checked luggage to the tune of $150. I could see how it could all be confusing for someone who doesn’t understand that free doesn’t exist anymore, especially for budget airlines. She didn’t bring any food or drink onboard and since my WOW Biz seat had extras, I ordered an extra bottle of water and gave it to her.
The lights in the cabin stayed on the entire time. Why? Probably because the flight attendants come around constantly selling food and Duty Free items throughout the flight. That’s, of course, when they weren’t congregating near the front of the plane and chatting.
Northern Lights Watch
There's nothing else quite like the Northern Lights and watching them dance across the sky outside my window was amazing.Click To Tweet
Lights in the cabin were dimmed only during takeoff and landing and when the pilot spotted the Northern Lights. I purposely booked a seat on the left side of the plane for this reason and I was so glad that I was able to see them. There’s nothing else quite like the Northern Lights and watching them dance across the sky outside my window was amazing. Once the cabin lights came back on, it was impossible to see them clearly or to photograph them.
The flight landed at Keflavik International Airport 30 minutes early at 4:07 am. While this sounds great, my flight to Amsterdam was leaving at 6 am. I departed the plane with Roza in tow. Although I thought we would walk right over to the gate, I forgot that we would have to go through passport control. Less than 5 minutes later we were at gate C35 along with everyone else.
KEF to AMS – Flight #2 WW442
When they finally announced boarding, one of the few perks of flying WOW Biz was Priority Boarding. I was able to walk right up and then have my boarding pass scanned while everyone had to wait. But unfortunately once again, they queued us up for 30 minutes in the gangway before allowing us to board the plane.
Seat map for flight WW442
I took ZERO pics for this flight after all the standing around and waiting. I sat in seat 1A, which besides no underseat storage, was a really great seat. First on and first off is always good in my book.
AMS to KEF – Flight #3 WW443
Waiting at Schiphol AIrport for flight
My flight from Amsterdam to Keflavik meant I was departing from an M gate with few services. While there’s a duty free store, a bar, and a takeaway shop with sandwiches and beverages, there are no lounges. I arrived early to check in which meant I sat and waited for a while. Like others, there was lots of sitting until gate M07 showed up on the overhead board.
View from gate while waiting to board flight WW443 AMS to KEF
Gate M07 has stairs going down and I walked down on the right to use the “priority boarding” lane. The gate agent checked my boarding pass and advised me to enter the lane to the left, which wasn’t priority. I asked her about priority, she was apologetic and sent me to the right side. I stood in Priority Boarding alone for the duration of my wait. The last person deplaned and I was immediately sent to board the plane.
My seat was 11E on the WOW Air Airbus A320, which was like row 10 in the seat map below. The row was one of the few double instead of triple rows on the plane.
Seat map for flight WW443
Seat F behind me meant that the passenger could stretch out his legs next to me, which this guy did sans shoes. Why does that always seem to happen to me? For a 3-hour flight, do we really need to take off our shoes and snuggle up with blankets and neck pillows?
Overall, this flight was uneventful and the flight crew was courteous, professional, and the flight quick and on time.
KEF to BOS – Flight #4
Seat map for flight WW125
Once in Keflavik, we had to go through passport control, which I’ll detail in my next post. Boarding for this WOW Air flight was fast, especially with priority boarding. I found my seat quickly, which was 11F on the right side of the Airbus A321. Again this plane had rows of three except for row 10. No one was sitting in the middle seat so it meant a little more elbow room for me.
View from my seat onboard WW125
Our flight was delayed about an hour with no information conveyed to the flight crew or to us other than to say that there were passengers that had been delayed going through security. We didn’t know why they were delayed or why they held the plane for them, but they did.
View from my seat onboard WW125
You have to kind of love the bright pink color of this plane. Ok, some may call it magenta or even purple, but regardless the color is bright and cheerful.
The flight was easy with only small pockets of turbulence, but beautiful views out the window, especially of Greenland over the Greenland Sea. While I generally avoid conversations on flights with strangers, I enjoyed talking the entire flight with Vinny, a passenger from Massachusetts. You never know who you’ll meet so always stay open to the possibilities.
Although the Food Doctor appears as an option on WOW Air flights, don’t expect to get any as they don’t carry them
When the flight attendants came around, I thought I’d order something to eat for my meal since I had skipped meals previously. I decided to order the lentil and couscous cup, but as you can already guess, they no longer carry it.
Apparently, what WOW Air considers a meal would be a sandwich and soda, pizza and beer, or a baguette and red wine. Instead of using a dollar amount, it's two items that's that. Click To Tweet
So I asked for the porridge cup (non-vegan btw), a water, and a chocolate bar that I planned on bringing back for Mr. TSG.  Apparently, what WOW Air considers a meal would be a sandwich and soda, pizza and beer, or a baguette and red wine. Instead of using a dollar amount, it’s two items that’s that. I was only allowed to have porridge and a bottle of water. I had to assure them that I didn’t get the bottle I was drinking from with them in order to get another bottle of water. C’mon people — it’s just water!
Landing at Boston Logan International Airport
While the flight was supposed to have been about 5 1/2 hours long, I sat far longer than that. Since we had the extra hour wait at Keflavik, I couldn’t wait to get off the plane and get home.
My Overall Thoughts on WOW Air
Overall, WOW Air is exactly what it proclaims itself to be: Cheap flights to Iceland and Europe from USA and Canada. While there’s no actual Business Class on this budget airline, it doesn’t proclaim itself to be more than what it is. Expect to pay for what you need as you go and expect to be nickeled and dimed along the way. There are zero freebies and the flight is like any you might expect with a short haul US domestic carrier. That’s nothing bad if that’s what you’re expecting, but disappointing if you’re expecting more.
My biggest advice is to price out all of the costs associated with any budget carrier before you buy. Compare the overall price for the flight, food, seat selection, checked and carry on baggage, etc. to all inclusive tickets. If you can save money, then WOW Air can definitely get you from point A to point B.
Have you flown WOW Air? What are your thoughts on this international carrier? Read more TSG airline reviews here on the site.
I had to assure them that I didn’t get the bottle I was drinking from with them in order to get another bottle of water. C’mon people — it’s just water!
Landing at Boston Logan International Airport
While the flight was supposed to have been about 5 1/2 hours long, I sat far longer than that. Since we had the extra hour wait at Keflavik, I couldn’t wait to get off the plane and get home.
My Overall Thoughts on WOW Air
Overall, WOW Air is exactly what it proclaims itself to be: Cheap flights to Iceland and Europe from USA and Canada. While there’s no actual Business Class on this budget airline, it doesn’t proclaim itself to be more than what it is. Expect to pay for what you need as you go and expect to be nickeled and dimed along the way. There are zero freebies and the flight is like any you might expect with a short haul US domestic carrier. That’s nothing bad if that’s what you’re expecting, but disappointing if you’re expecting more.
My biggest advice is to price out all of the costs associated with any budget carrier before you buy. Compare the overall price for the flight, food, seat selection, checked and carry on baggage, etc. to all inclusive tickets. If you can save money, then WOW Air can definitely get you from point A to point B.
Have you flown WOW Air? What are your thoughts on this international carrier? Read more TSG airline reviews here on the site.
Adopting Marketing Automation: Key Challenges and Solutions
The benefits of using marketing automation seem clear. Every year more marketers decide to move away from “spray and pray” campaigns and choose to automate their communication instead. But adopting marketing automation isn’t a walk in the park, as our research found.
In our survey, we’ve asked more than 2,500 marketers around the globe about the top challenges they saw when adopting marketing automation in their companies.
Having collected the data, we decided to ask some of the brightest minds in the marketing industry about why they thought those elements caused such a struggle and what could one do to overcome them.
Below you’ll find the chart showing the results of the above mentioned research, along with the comments from marketing experts and practitioners like Michael Brenner, Kath Pay, Erik Qualman, and more!
Once you’ve read them, please share your thoughts with us.
What were the biggest marketing automation challenges for your company and how did you overcome them (or how are you planning to overcome them)? Are the results from this study in line with what you’ve experienced?
Let us know in the comments below.
  Key challenges and solutions
1. Securing budget (36.1%)
Michael Brenner – CEO of Marketing Insider Group
Marketers’ biggest struggle with marketing automation is securing budget. And this is true despite the fact that we rate email marketing as the most effective marketing channel. Imagine if all our marketing efforts (time, budget, people) were directed at the programs that deliver the greatest impact.
Instead, too many marketing organizations are focused on checking the boxes. We do what our boss thinks might work. We create brochures for the sales team that get thrown in the trash. We run banner ads because the brand team asked us to. The main reason we struggle to secure budget is that we don’t measure the impact of our marketing activities on our business. Too often we forget to ask if our customers really want or need the things we invest in.
Email marketing works because our customers have to opt-in and they have the ability to unsubscribe. This forces us to really focus on creating valuable content that helps them. So we need to measure these results and learn how to present the business case for marketing automation in business terms that executives can understand.
 Kath Pay – CEO of Holistic Email Marketing
I believe the problem lies in a couple of places. Firstly, 36.1% say that securing budget is a problem, yet only 15.1% have an issue with lack of buy-in/vision from the senior managers. There is a big discrepancy there and shows that a good percentage of senior managers have bought into it, yet aren’t allocating the budget. In my experience this is simply because marketing automation has been sold as a tactic, which sounds good, but without any specific business case as to what problem it will solve, and therefore the managers are hesitant to invest into it.
If, however, you went to the C-suite and said “80% of our database is made up of one-time buyers and we could make X% more revenue with a second purchase program to convert them into buying a second time” or “PPC is costing us $xx.xx and we keep paying for people who have already visited the website or signed up to our newsletter and therefore we should implement a robust first purchase program in order to not only convert these people into being customers but also reduce our PPC expenditure”, you’d provide clear persuasive reasoning that would get the C-suite’s attention.
This then brings us to the next issue, which is implementing marketing automation because they know or think they should implement it. If a customer journey and data insight review was performed, this would clearly show the missed opportunities that could be resolved by marketing automation – with the aim of solving business problems and achieving business objectives. Most marketers want to implement it because they believe it will free them up and make their life easier. This is not a reason that the C-suite will readily buy into, but resolving business pains will. And this business case can be put together by reviewing the customer journey and the data. I know this because we do it all the time!
Another example could be that, if you mined your data and found that people who spend an AOV of $xx.xx and have bought three times are more likely to go on to being your best customers with a high CLTV, then you could build a case to implement a third purchase program targeting those who have this AOV and have bought twice.
So don’t implement marketing automation because you think it’s a good idea or everyone says you should. Try and align it to your company’s business objectives and speak to the C-suite in the language they understand.
 Erik Qualman – #1 bestselling author and motivational speaker
For many organizations and companies marketing automation is a new frontier. Like any new frontier this is a new line item on the budget ledger and it is often a challenge to secure funding for it.
If you are the person attempting to secure budget the key is to remember that this is a new destination and you don’t use old maps to get to new destinations. Remind your executives of this and also remind them that you are glad they are pushing back as pioneers get pushback.
Pushback is a signal that you are actually pioneering. You are blazing the trail. Help walk them through that in the long term this will actually reduce cost, improve customer experience, and make the company more human, not less, by automating redundant tasks and allowing employees to have real conversations with the customers.
Be patient and frame items in words they already gravitate toward: revenue, customer service, and cost reduction.
 2. Quality of customer data (35.3%)
 Andrew Davis – bestselling author and keynote speaker
It’s not surprising to hear that the quality of customer data is such a large barrier to finding success with marketing automation. In an age where “big data” is all the buzz, you’re much more likely to find success in small data points that point to major insights.
For example, I’m a proponent of “progressive registration”. The simple idea that lots of small choices from your email list over time can paint a really powerful picture of your customers and that’s where you’ll find actionable insight.
Instead of trying to marry all of your data together in one place, start by using small email interactions to trigger new insight. For example, if you send an email with two video choices to watch – one designed for audience A to watch and one designed for audience B, use their click choice to set a custom field.
For example, if one video is for C-level executives and the other is designed for entry-level tacticians, use marketing automation to set a custom field, like “C-Level=Yes.” Now, you can start to segment your list and provide new paths for those who’ve self-identified as C-level.
 3. Knowledge to set up different types of automation, e.g. rules, lead scoring (35.2%)
 Dave Chaffey – CEO and co-founder of Smart Insights
Our research found that there were 5 major problems of marketing automation which were rated at a similar level, with around one third of businesses experiencing each challenge. I was personally surprised that securing budget was the highest rated challenge, since most businesses will already be investing in an email marketing service. Many of these services now including highly capable marketing automation features as part of the fee, so it should be possible to overcome this problem by switching vendors, although this requires planning and an investment of time.
The other challenges require recognition of the issue and then putting in place processes to overcome them. Developing specialist knowledge inside the business is also important. Some vendors have better levels of advice and support to develop these, so you should consider the level of support available from your vendor. Alternatively, you can use an online education platform like Smart Insights, which offers advanced advice on email and marketing automation.
 4. Producing engaging content and communication (33.9%)
 Jamie Turner – author, speaker, and the CEO of 60SecondMarketer.com
There are two key issues many marketers face regarding content.
The first is that there is a huge amount of existing content on any and all topics already, so it’s getting more and more difficult to break through.
The second is that most corporations are reluctant to put in the extra effort to get their content to break through.
Those two issues — the huge amount of content and the resistance corporations have about going the extra mile — are interrelated. That means if you solve one of them, you’ll solve both of them.
There are three secrets to breaking through the clutter with your content:
Target niches: By narrowing your audience, you actually increase the odds of your content breaking through. So, instead of writing a post titled “7 Secrets to Get Your Blog Posts Shared” you would hyper-target the post so that it reads “7 Secrets Every Accountant Should Know to Get Their Blog Post Shared.” By hyper-targeting, you actually increase the odds of breaking through.
Take a contrarian viewpoint: If everybody is saying one thing, then you can stand out by taking the opposite point of view. For example, if everybody is writing posts about what a great CEO Steve Jobs was, then you should write a post saying, “Why Steve Jobs Was One of the Worst CEOs of All Time.” That approach can help you break through.
Use paid ads to promote: Most businesses have been led to believe that they can break through the clutter by promoting their posts organically. While that’s still true in some cases, more and more businesses are realizing that they have to pay in order to expand their visibility. (We can thank Facebook for that trend.) Don’t be afraid to use paid ads to promote your best and most viral posts.
 5. Measuring effectiveness (32.9%)
 Daniel Brzeziński – COO at GetResponse
Adapting new marketing technology is never an easy process. Especially when it’s meant to be used by different teams who have their own long-term objectives and KPIs. You can see it very clearly in the case of marketing automation, which – among many things – is meant to break down the silos built by sales and marketing departments.
Seeing the results from our study, it’s not a surprise that budget is the top challenge marketers face when they first adopt marketing automation in their companies. It’s directly linked to the other challenges mentioned, notably to the problem of measuring results.
Teams responsible for running marketing automation campaigns need to figure out the shared criteria for measuring their effectiveness. They need to find a common ground and understand each other’s objectives. Measuring campaign performance by the number of generated leads may be sufficient for the marketing team, but understandably, it won’t be good enough for the sales department.
Gather your team, get them to sit down and list all the essential metrics and requirements for reaching their objectives. Be clear about what makes a marketing-qualified and sales-accepted lead, and be open to re-evaluating this after some time. Plan your campaigns, always having the lead acquisition cost in front of you, along with the CLV you get from each of them.
Then getting the buy-in from your CMO or securing a budget should no longer be a challenge.
 Where to start
Regardless of whether you still haven’t decided if marketing automation is the right fit for you or you’re already thinking of what you’ll do with all that extra time and resources, you’ll want to come prepared when the time’s right to launch it in your company.
So before you jump right in and hope for the best, take a moment to get familiar with these best tips for getting started with marketing automation, and learn how to measure the ROI of your automated campaigns.
Good luck with your campaigns!
Getting Started in Cycling – A Guide
“There’s no turning back once you’ve conquered your first hill or felt the rush of descending at high speed”
  By Guest Writer, Paul Norton
They say cycling is the new golf. Both are sociable, get you out in the fresh air and can be expensive!
However, that’s where the similarities stop. Unlike golf, cycling gives many choices and can take many forms for those not satisfied with just one discipline. You have options such as road, mountain, track, touring, commuting, sportives, and even triathlon.
But, which one is right for you? Well, if you’re unsure whether you might be a fat-tyre, baggy-clothes trail muncher, or a skinny-tyre, lycra-clad roadie, then get yourself to a bike shop, a local rental company or a trail centre. These may give you options to try a bike or rent one for the day or weekend.
This type or trial will give you a feel for which discipline might be the one for you. But don’t worry if you find that after six months that you should’ve chosen a different path – you can never have too many bikes! The perfect amount of bikes to own is n+1, with n being the current number of bikes in garage!
After you have decided you want to be the next Nicholas Roche, Aileen Reid or Julien Absalon, here are some pointers on Getting Started.
  1. Cash is King
There are a few crucial factors to consider before dropping the cash on a bicycle that could, perhaps, buy you a small car. The first is price. Spend what your budget allows.
You don’t need to have the latest and greatest when starting off: as a novice you won’t be able to tell the difference between your Ultegra and your 105 (these are some of the components that come on road bikes).
So, what determines the price?
When it comes to road bikes for example, the major factors include the gear components (called groupsets – the he most common brand is Shimano which has 6 levels of mechanical and 2 levels of electronic groupsets), followed by wheels and frame material (aluminium for an entry level frame and carbon fibre for more performance).
The same is true for mountain bikes but with the added choice of hard tail (front suspension fork only) or full suspension (front and rear shocks).
The Bike-to-Work scheme is well worth looking into and can save you up to 52% on the price of a bike and accessories if you pay the high rate of tax. Check with your employer if you can avail of this.
At a minimum, expect to spend €650 for an entry-level road or mountain bike.
  2. Brand Snobbery
If you are into your Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger then you’ll probably want the latest bicycle brand in vogue and clothing to match. For the rest of you, this might not be a factor at all.
However, you will still want to make sure you are getting quality and a good bang for your buck. A good rule of thumb is to check out which brands the professional teams ride and pick one of those. Invariably these brands get a lot of feedback from the pros which trickle down through the product range and you know you are getting a quality product.
  3. If the Shoe Fits
Just like a pair of bad fitting shoes which cause you blisters, a bad fitting bike will cause you discomfort and won’t do much for your motivation to get you out and ride on those wet and windy winter mornings.
There are two things to consider about bike fit – size and geometry. Size is the most important – you can adapt to the geometry of the bike but you can’t lengthen or shorten your legs. A good bike shop should be able to select the right frame size for you. Next is the geometry.
Most bicycle brands will offer the consumer a ‘relaxed’ or more ‘aggressive’ geometry depending on the use (leisure or racing) or personal preference. Once that is decided it’s just a matter of adjusting the saddle height and/or the handlebar stem length. Again, a good sales-person should do this for you free of charge.
Once you have achieved a good position on the bike it should feel reasonably comfortable and a natural fit. You can always improve your position by getting a professional bike fit to achieve the optimal riding position and maximum comfort and power. Expect to pay between €75 and €180 for a fit, depending of the system used.
  4. The Accessories and Clothing
After you have your shiny new steed, next come the clothes and accessories. First on the list is definitely a helmet. Some will argue that helmets are uncomfortable or sweaty or that drivers will take more risks when they see you wearing one. However, I am firmly in the pro-helmet camp because, on occasions, my helmet has saved me a trip to the ER!
Helmets will range from €40 to €300, the differences being in weight, comfort, materials used and varying levels of protection.
You’ll also need a few other essentials before setting off – a pump (a mini one for the bike and a floor pump for the garage), a ‘multi-tool’ for repairs on the road, a spare inner tube and tyre level, a saddle pack to put all those items into, and a water bottle and cage. All this should set you back in the region of €75 to €100.
One tip I will definitely give you when it comes to clothing – don’t be a cheapskate when buying shorts. Your bum will thank you for it. A quality pair of shorts (circa €100) plus some chamois cream makes a big difference once you start increasing your mileage. And please, for heaven’s sake, no underwear or GAA shorts! Not only does underwear look ridiculous under lycra, it will end up chaffing. And the GAA shorts: lads, you’re fooling no one!
In winter you’ll have to consider other extras, such as lights, mudguards and winter clothing. A good winter jacket and bib-tights are worth their weight in gold when the cold weather sets in. As Sean Kelly always says, “there’s no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothing”.
  5. To Shave or not to Shave
Onto that burning question, ‘do I need to shave my legs’? Well, if you’ve just bought a mountain bike and baggy shorts, the answer is ‘no’, but if you’ve invested in a lightweight road bike and lycra shorts – well, I’ll leave it up to you.
There are various logical reasons given for shaving. For example, if you take a slide off the bike the hairs won’t get into the road-rash, and it makes massages easier. There’s also a certain amount of vanity involved – shaved legs look better (to cyclists anyway). Mainly however, it’s probably as statement of intent – “I’m a committed cyclist” – and you have truly joined the club.
So, shaving doesn’t make you go any faster but you’ll look pretty pro when sipping your expresso outside your favourite coffee shop.
  6. Pedal Power
We’ve all been there – stopped at a red light and can’t get the foot out in time and down you go! This is followed immediately by swift remount and an investigative look around to see if anyone caught sight of our embarrassing tussle between forward momentum and gravity.
What I’m referring to here is whether you should go with clip-in style-pedals or stick with the more predictable, gravity-friendly, flat pedal.
Well, like the geometry of the bike, it’s your preference. If you choose a clip-in pedal you will need to buy a corresponding shoe (both will start at €125 combined). The advantage of going this route is that you will have more power and efficiency in your pedal stroke and, in the long run, you will have greater control over the bike.
Clipping in and out is daunting at first but becomes second nature after a couple of rides and this goes for both roadies and mountain bikers.
There are two main styles of pedal and shoe: a road shoe with a flat sole and three holes to fit the cleats and a mountain bike shoe with a recessed area to fit the smaller mountain bike cleat. The corresponding pedals (Shimano, Look, Time, SpeedPlay, Crank Brothers to name a few) will either be a larger, one-sided pedal for the road shoe or a smaller, double-sided pedal for the mountain-bike shoe.
Generally the road combination is lighter and your weight is spread over a greater area but the mountain bike combo has the advantage of clipping in on both sides of the pedal. In both cases, the cleats are supplied with the pedals.
  7. It’s Go Time
Now that you’ve got all the gear it’s time to hit the trails or tarmac.
If you haven’t ridden a bike in a while it’s a good idea to do a few short spins on a safe route that you are familiar with, in order to get used to the handling of the bike. Practice clipping in and out, cornering, accelerating and braking. Remember to take a mobile phone with you.
Once you feel more confident, the best way to improve you fitness and get the most enjoyment out of your bike is to ride with friends or a club. You can find you nearest club from the Cycling Ireland or Triathlon Ireland websites.
Don’t be put off by the perception that all club members are racing cyclists. Many clubs having leisure or touring sections within them and are split into groups with varying distances and speeds depending on your level or ability. You’ll find yourself moving up from the C group to the B group in a very short space of time. Riding in a club will improve your fitness and bike handling skills, as cycling in a group takes a lot more concentration and skill.
Once you get the hang of riding in a group there’s no better feeling than belting along in the slipstream of the rider’s wheel in front. If racing is your aim, then you will need to take out a Cycling Ireland (CI) or Triathlon Ireland (TI) competitive licence. You get a discount once you are a member of a club. You won’t be able to race without a licence.
Cycling Ireland offer a non-competitive licence that covers you in the result of injury while out training with you club. Some clubs look for this as a minimum. Whether it’s racing or non-competitive events (called sportives or sportifs), you can find a full list of events on the CI and TI websites.
  8. What’s a Watt?
Once you started you may want to improve – fast!
If you’re like me and you’re really bad at planning your weekly schedule but you want to improve your fitness and achieve a certain goal, then the best way to do this is to invest in a coach.
Your coach will help you build a structured training plan around your busy life to help get the best from your training and achieve your targets. Rather than going out doing the same old routes and the same old tempo, your coach will build variety into the plan and you will start to see results in a matter of weeks.
Coaches will use various methods to gauge how hard you’ve trained and how your fitness is progressing. The best tool is the power meter which measures your effort in watts. While these can cost anywhere from €700 to €2,000 and upwards, it can be a key investment in improving your performance.
Another tool would be to use a heart rate monitor which is less likely to break the bank. Your coach will help you identify your heart rate zones in which you will carry out different sessions. By varying your distances, speed and heart rate or power, you will start to see gains in both your aerobic (longer distance and less intensity) and anaerobic (shorter distance and higher intensity) fitness levels.
  9. Hang Sangers or Power Bars?
To get power out you have to put fuel in. But it can be a delicate balance.
Too little fuel and you can ‘Bonk’! We’ve all been there, riding along chatting away one minute and the next we’re weaving all over the road with blurred vision and hallucinating! ‘The Bonk’, ‘Hitting the Wall’ – call it what you like – is the one thing that cyclists starting off fear the most when doing a long ride. So how do you fend off the ‘Man with the Hammer’?
As you become a more accomplished cyclist, your body will adapt to the longer hours in the saddle without taking on as much fuel. For novices, however, it can be a real shock to the system once you start to push your body beyond what it’s used to.
A proper breakfast, such as a large bowl of porridge along and honey with toast and Nutella, can usually sustain you for up to two hours. If you know you will be out on the bike for longer than this you will need to bring food along. I would recommend something that’s easy to consume on the go and fits into you back pockets. If you don’t want to go down the energy bar or gel route, bring a banana and jam sandwich, fig rolls, jelly babies, fruit cake or dried fruits.
Avoid things that can melt like chocolate or ice cream – it makes a real mess of your jersey!
If you are bringing two bottles with you, take one with just water and add an electrolyte or electrolyte and energy sachet/tablet to the other bottle. It’s important to keep drinking even if it’s cold or raining.
Next on the dreaded list after hitting the wall is cramping. The electrolytes will help to keep those muscle cramps at bay. The big mistake people can often make is eating too much, either the night before, that morning, or throughout the ride. There’s no need to stuff your face with buckets of pasta as you’ll end up feeling bloated and sluggish. There is only so much food that can be absorbed into the muscles as energy and the rest is stored as fat.
Also avoid spicy and greasy foods the day before as they might send you looking for the closest WC or bush! Little and often is always a good guide to stick by.
  10. No Turning Back
Whether you are young or old, male or female, short or tall, fat or skinny, cycling is an all-inclusive sport that is healthy, sociable and highly addictive. There’s no turning back once you’ve conquered your first hill or felt the rush of descending at high speed.
You may as well re-mortgage the house, sell a kidney or trade in the BMW, because there’s a risk of you becoming very familiar with the inside of your local bike shop!
Go for it, and enjoy it!
