Doom Patrolling
Tumblr media
Hello, I got into Doom Patrol from the TV show, and now I'm setting out to read all of it and watch anything they're in.
I've already read all of Grant Morrison and Gerard Way's runs and bits of others, but I'm starting from the beginning and going all the way through now. I've found a place that has most of it online and primarily what it's missing is Unstoppable Doom Patrol, so I obviously have a long way to go before I have to figure out how to get the last of it, or just buy it. I mean, I do plan on collecting it but I'm not patient enough to wait to read it, because it's going to take a while to be able to afford it all.
This is where I'll post about it, and I'll also be drawing stuff from it. Just because.
Here is the link to the site I'm using to read it. It starts from the beginning of My Greatest Adventure, so the Doom Patrol stuff doesn't start until My Greatest Adventure issue #80, goes until #85, then My Greatest Adventure just becomes Doom Patrol. So I'm not going to read the non-Doom Patrol My Greatest Adventure stories from before issue #80. Maybe some day, but that's not the point of this.
You'll notice this blog tends to focus on Larry and/or whatever version of the Negative character there is in that run (as you may have noticed most of the characters in my drawing above are directly connected to Larry in some way) although I'll still read the stuff where there is no version of this character. Larry's my favorite character and Matt Bomer specifically was the reason I started watching Doom Patrol in the first place, and I fell in love with the show immediately, enough to start reading all the comics.
If you've seen this image before in the tags, it's going to be from my Larry Trainor fan/RP blog @flyboy-trainor.

Comprehension Levels
I did the actual words-known/words-on-page to find out my comprehension % of chinese (so characters known/characters on page to make things simple to count). i wanted to see how close I am to reading at that 98% sweet spot they tell people to read. so here’s my comprehension % of some novels of mine, as of 7/20/21:
撒野: 98.9% comprehension (I should just extensively read it, I could speed read the page I glanced at and guess the unknown words once I saw them)
SVSSS: 97.9% (pretty much at a comfortable reading level, the unknown hanzi were mostly parts of multi-character description words I could roughly guess the meaning of, but I was marking every unknown character)
小王子: 96.8% (again, this is as of today, I flipped to a random page so I wouldn’t have myself remembering the plot to affect how much I ‘knew’)
DMBJ 1: 96%
Peach Blossom Debt: 96% if I count name characters as unknown, 97% comprehension if I ignore character names. (I imagine part of the difficulty is my lack of xianxia reading vocab, so if I intensively read a few beginning chapters I could probably fix that).
Guardian: 95.7% understood (I picked the last page of the first print volume, as I figured if I picked the first chapter which I’ve studied and reread my comprehension level would be higher than if it was a part of the novel I haven’t read)
Update: the current fanfic I am reading 夜半衣寒,I tested my comprehension of the new chapter 16 I started. Out of 705 characters, I didn’t know 9, 695/705=0.987 so I have 98.7% comprehension! This is interesting to me, because I would guess (since I didn’t actually measure at the time), that I did not have above 98% comprehension when I started reading it (of course I’ve read like 34k+ characters of it now so I’d hope I’m more familiar with its vocab now). So this is just info for me, that if something starts out as ‘hard’ as this fic to start, if I intensively read for a while (and I’d guess probably the first few chapters since that’s where author’s own specific language is the most new and their setup/genre words hopefully get introduced), I might be able to learn enough words to put it into a more comfortable regular comprehension level for myself. I do think, at least now that I’m into the flow of this story, I’m reading it a bit faster (still on the slower end since I look up every unknown or ‘fuzzy’ word to double check the pronunciation). To be fair to me? These chapters are 20 pleco pages, which used to take me 1-1.5 hours ToT. Now they take 30-40 minutes, since I slow down to look up things and listen to certain sections, but considering they’d take 15-20 minutes to follow along to someone narrating out loud, I’m getting closer to a normal reading speed. If I sped read/extensively read these chapters instead of intensively looking things up, I may well be at 20-30 minutes a chapter.
Last night I read 4496 characters, chapter 1 of 福尔摩斯  血字的研究. I used the click-dictionary for new words, and there was definitely a lot of new vocab (though mostly places and names confused me). All of the experiment related new vocab it was nice to see though and learn, since I like reading mysteries I’m sure those words will come up again in other stuff I read.
Some things I find interesting about this information: I read 小王子 extensively months ago so presumably when I comprehended a bit less than the current amount (since I learned a lot of new words from context or from glancing at the english translation for some words). So whatever my personal ‘minimum’ level of comprehension I can personally tolerate when reading extensively is, it’s below 96% comprehension.
Listening Reading Method and other activities I’ve been doing has helped my comprehension a LOT. I did NOT expect the comprehensions of all these to be as close to 98% as they are. Particularly Guardian, being at 95% - that isn’t very far from the comfortable reading material level of ‘98%’ I’m aiming for. I’m not sure how fast I can boost up my comprehension just a BIT more, but wow is it close to the goal...
On a related note, that explains why Guardian and Silent Reading have felt relatively easier for me to ‘extensively read’ when I feel like it lately. While I still have some difficulty, since I have familiarity with the general story (Guardian) or have read the english translation (Silent Reading), the new words are not super hard to guess and therefore following the main idea is not an issue. Guardian is above the 95% comprehension level for me now, and its likely I extensively read a novel I had NO prior knowledge about -  小王子 - also at 95% comprehension or less.
I looked up the comprehension level I had because I just read this article about how to pick reading material when learning a new language, and it made me curious how far Below that 98% comprehension level I usually try to read.
For comparisons, I’m curious how my personal comprehension compares to the general-vocab-difficulty tool and results I got from that (which can be viewed in this post more in depth).
This was the novel’s ranking, from easiest to harder, based on that tool (lower number = more difficult):
小王子 2.004
DMBJ 1 1.992
撒野 1.98
SVSSS 1.9
Guardian 1.9
Peach Blossom Debt  1.858
I am guessing the difference in order of difficulty compared to my personal comprehension levels, might have to do with the materials I learn from? Or may have to do with the fact the tool sorts by full words, not characters, so 2-4 character words/phrases that are unknown would only count as one unit. Whereas when I calculated my comprehension I counted by character (since I was physically counting on paper it was easier to just go by character when counting unknown versus amount-of-content on the page). Also, the tool took a bigger sample of 2,000 words for each novel, whereas I used 300-500 characters per page samples.
It’s also possible, because of the small amount of characters in my comprehension % samples - Guardian overall may have more unknown words and put it lower than 95% overall, and stuff like DMBJ may well have a lot more words I know and potentially be more comprehensible than 96% overall.
For the most part I had 4-15 unknown characters per page. Which could realistically affect my reading more or less depending on what role they served in the sentence. Characters in descriptions I can figure out the rough meaning of easier when reading because they’re often part of 2-4 character words and phrases where I know the rest of the characters, or they’re an emotion/mood description another word I know on the page will also re-state, but unknown characters for critical verbs or nouns affect story comprehension a lot more. Xiao wang zi is a good example of my overall actual reading level, since some unknown hanzi were in descriptions and I could ‘guess’ well enough to follow just ine, but some of the unknown hanzi on the page were verbs and nouns which makes those sections harder to comprehend.
Some promising notes from articles!
From FluentU: https://www.fluentu.com/blog/reading-in-a-second-language/
Tumblr media
So I am at the spot for most novels I want to read right now 95%+, where if I read with a dictionary it probably feels okay and I will learn a lot, but it will feel challenging at times.
And for a few (at least SaYe) I can really just extensive read the way its supposed to feel.
Reading Rockets: https://www.readingrockets.org/article/fluency-introduction
Tumblr media
This article puts 95% as the minimum comprehension level for a person to read to improve reading fluency.
This https://readingmatrix.com/articles/september_2011/prichard_matsumoto.pdf
is an interesting paper, and puts 95% as the minimum for comprehension to read unassisted, but also mentions it could be a spectrum rather than all-or-nothing. Readers who use strategies to comprehend more can improve their comprehension a bit, and readers who have background knowledge on the subject can improve their ability to comprehend the reading material a bit.
This part was also fascinating: “ Hu and Nation (2000) sought to examine the lexical threshold more deeply. They tested the comprehension of a narrative text by 66 advanced learners, adapting the text to include frequent words estimated to be known by all the subjects. They replaced uncommon words with nonsense words in order to set coverage levels to 80%, 90%, 95%, and 100%. Comprehension of the various versions of the passages was measured by a multiple-choice comprehension test and a recall measure. Subjects at the 95% level had a mean score of 10.2 points out of 14 on the multiple-choice text, while the readers with 90% coverage averaged only slightly lower at 9.5 points. There were a wide range of scores at these two coverage levels with 7 of 16 subjects at the 90% level getting a higher score than the mean score of the 95% coverage group. The results were similar on the recall measure. Overall, while there was a clear and strong correlation between coverage and comprehension, the existence of the 95% lexical threshold was not supported by Hu and Nation. They estimate that if there was a comprehension threshold at all, it may have been between 80 and 90% since all the readers with 80% coverage had difficulty comprehending the text. Hu and Nation state that learners at the 90% were able to reach comprehension through reading skills and background knowledge. They also hypothesize that 98% may be the coverage required at which most learners can comprehend the text adequately. The mark they set to determine this was about 85% comprehension, which was much higher than that used by Laufer (1989, 1992). “
“ Lower threshold: A percentage at which comprehension becomes possible; a percentage at which few learners below have any significant comprehension of the text (referred to by Hu & Nation, 2000, as potentially being between 80 and 90%). 211
Significant increase threshold: A coverage point above which learners’ mean comprehension increases significantly (95%, based on Laufer, 1989).
Adequate comprehension threshold: A percentage at which most learners achieve “adequate comprehension” (suggested as 95% in Laufer, based on 55% comprehension; hypothesized as 98% coverage in Hu & Nation based on 85% comprehension).
Upper threshold: A point above which an increase in coverage does not lead to improved comprehension (Laufer, 1992). If it exists, it is likely 98-99%.
That study may explain why some people with lower vocab knowledge ‘feel’ more ok with reading at lower comprehensions (that’d be me lol ToT). When I was learning french, I started reading extensively at a somewhat low vocab level, and in english I knew in elementary school I’d pick up novels for adults and read some sometimes, and by end of elementary I had a college reading level, so mm.

“Hey guys!” Uraraka waved cheerfully at the camera. “My name is Uraraka Ochako, and welcome back to Farm to Table, a show where we explore where our food comes from!”
“For today’s episode, we’re going to be doing something a liiittle different.” On the counter was a pile of misshapen brown lumps, mottled with different black and brown spots. “On our cacao episode, a lot of you were a little… shall we say, disappointed with me, when I didn’t make chocolate out of a cacao pod.”
Uraraka’s smile turned icy, as a screenshot popped up on screen. She held up a little slip of paper from her hand and cleared her voice.
“ ‘Making chocolate isn’t easy,’ ” she read, widening her eyes for emphasis. “ ‘This girl has no idea what she’s talking about.’ ”
The dark, saccharine expression on her face never faltered as she ripped up the paper into tiny pieces, throwing bits over her shoulder.
“Now, I’m here to show you that actually, yes – making chocolate can be easy!” The hard smile was replaced by a warm grin. “My friends at Tokyo Cacao sent me some pods to work with, and lucky for us, they’re ripe and ready to go!”
She beamed, picking up a pod and showing it off to the camera. “I’ll show you guys how to turn these bad boys into chocolate - and after that, I’m gonna share one of my favorite chocolate recipes with you!”
Uraraka then grinned mischievously. “First things first – we gotta crack this little guy open.” Reaching under the countertop, she whipped out a gigantic chef’s knife. It was easily as long as Uraraka’s forearm, and the polished blade was engraved with two characters that clearly read, ‘Bakugou.’
A choking sound was heard off screen.
“Holy shit Uraraka, you took it?!” A man popped into frame, gaping at the knife in Uraraka’s hand. “Dude, Bakugou’s been looking for that all morning - he’s going to kill you for real this time!”
“Not if he doesn’t find out,” she said seriously, fixing the blonde man with a pointed look. “You’re not going to rat me out, are you, Kaminari?”
“And get killed in his Baku-rage? No thanks.” He shivered, staring at the knife as if it was going to attack him. “At least you’ve got a chance of surviving.”
Uraraka laughed, rolling her eyes. “You’re acting like he’s going to eat you or something.”
“You don’t know about poor Mineta,” Kaminari looked grave as he closed his eyes in a moment of silence, before scurrying out of frame. He called out, “If anyone, especially Bakubro, asks – I was never here!”
“O… kay?... ” Uraraka blinked at the camera for a few moments and then shook her head in amusement. “Anyways, back to the topic – opening the pod! The rind is pretty thick and slippery, so be careful where you’re cutting! The best way is to set the edge of the knife in one of the grooves and give it a good whack, like this - !”

“Oh fuck, that’s good,” Bakugou groaned, mouth full as he chewed. The mango-coconut tart in front of him was dotted with swirls of candied orange peel as a garnish, but it did nothing to hide the fact that the entire thing was dusted with a liberal coating of violent red chili powder.
At his side, Uraraka beamed, sniffling a little from the pervasive scent of spice in the air. “I added some lime too, just to break up the richness – it’s not too sweet?”
“S’fucking perfect.” Bakugou scarfed down the last bite of the piece in his hand. He let out another long moan, the sound of it deep and guttural, and Uraraka’s eyes widened as she stared, her cheeks turning red. “Screw it, I’m eating this for lunch.”
“Eh?” Uraraka blinked, snapping out of her daze just as the tray was snatched from her workbench. “Wait, wait – Bakugou! Give it back, I haven’t even tasted it yet!”
“Pft, like you wouldn’t down a carton of milk after one bite,” he scoffed, holding the tart above his head and trying to fend off Uraraka with his free hand as she pulled at his arm. “Fucking get off, Uraraka, I – !”

Todoroki stared down at the gooey, green-streaked mess of chocolate in front of him mournfully. At his side, Yaoyorozu looked equally despondent, poking at the dull sheen of dark chocolate covering the biscuit in her hand.
“Should we…?” Todoroki glanced over hesitantly, and Yaoyorozu bit her lip.
“I was really hoping we’d get it this time.” She sighed heavily, before turning around. The camera zoomed out, the frame widening to show a few people milling around in the background. “Uraraka! Do you have a moment?”
A chirpy voice replied, “Sure!” Todoroki visibly sighed in relief, quickly dumping his mixing bowl into the sink of dirty dishes as Uraraka came into the shot.
“Huh, that’s definitely not right…” The brunette poked Yaoyorozu’s chocolate mixture with a frown. “What temperature did you heat this to?”
“45 degrees?” Uraraka hummed, scooping up a bit of the mixture and dumping it into her hand. She rubbed at it, frowning. “What did you use as your seeded chocolate?”
Todoroki slid the half-empty bag of chocolate chips across the counter, and Uraraka dumped a pile of them out. Little disks spilled across the marble, and she tested one piece between her clean fingers. “Uh, you know that you’re supposed to use tempered chocolate to seed, right?”
Todoroki opened his mouth, paused, then closed it abruptly. Yaoyorozu buried her face in her hands and audibly groaned.
“Hey, the good news is that you can totally reuse this!” Uraraka tried to smile encouragingly. “Did the matcha chocolate come out weird too, or –?”
“Oi, what the fuck is this?” The camera panned to the side, where Bakugou was holding up Todoroki’s abandoned mixing bowl in a fist, features twisted into a grimace. “Did all those e-cigs fry your brain, Half-and-half? Who the fuck doesn’t sift matcha before –”
“Hey, lay off of him, Bakugou.” Uraraka stomped over and snatched the bowl away. “Tempering is hard! And you know white chocolate is tricky.”
“Tch, please.” He scoffed. “What kind of idiot can’t temper chocolate?”
Uraraka’s eyes flashed, and she planted her arms on her waist. “Have you ever tempered chocolate before?”
“What kind of dumbass question is that?” Bakugou growled. “Course I have, I didn’t live under a fucking rock like these two morons.”
Yaoyorozu bristled indignantly, but Uraraka held up her hand. Todoroki just looked tired, and muttered under his breath, “Here we go again…”
“Then you wouldn’t mind giving us a demonstration, would you?” Bakugou looked at her sweet, smiling face suspiciously. “Or are you too chicken to prove it?”
Red eyes flashed dangerously. “... the fuck did you just say?”
─── ・。゚❁゚。・ ───
The video cut to a shot of lumpy, melted white goo, before zooming out to show Bakugou’s scowl. “What the fuck is wrong with this shitty chocolate?” He kept stirring, even more vigorously this time, and looked down at the mixture as if he was trying to set it on fire with his glare.
Todoroki and Yaoyorozu were tucked a little ways away, snickering quietly as they watched from a safe distance away. Across from Bakugou, leaning casually against the counter, Uraraka smiled gleefully.
“Hur-dur, ‘what kind of idiot can’t temper chocolate?’ ” she mimicked, her voice lowered in an approximation of the blonde’s low growl. Uraraka laughed, and then ducked as a chocolate-covered spatula sailed over her head.
“FUCK OFF, ROUND FACE!”

smolbean678 reblogged kryssalys ochaakou:
reasons you should stan uraraka ochako, u.a.’s farming goddess and resident bakugou whisperer:
- has probably saved about half of the “from scratch” episodes by virtue of being the only person in the entire u.a. test kitchen who can consistently temper chocolate
- speaking of chocolate, this woman pulled the hardest flex by making her own chocolate from a raw cacao pod, and then proceeded to make chocolate chicken mole with it just to prove to the haters that she could
- is the acting president of the musutafu ninniclub, a japanese club for lovers of garlic. she also openly admits to sleeping with a ninnikyun plushie, aka the club mascot which is apparently a giant garlic clove (seriously, you can’t make this shit up guys)
- vocal advocate of Feeding Japan, a hunger relief organization that works to combat food insecurity, and is frequently seen volunteering at food banks and soup kitchens (1) (2) (3) (4)
- a lot of the ingredients she features in the “farm to table” series come from her parent’s farm! (pics) she grew up working at her parents’ stall at her hometown farmer’s market and promotes buying locally to support regional farms and businesses.
- this masterpiece of a tweet: “I love food and I love to eat. If someone wants to shame me for my body then they can go fuck themselves.”
- creates recipes that not only taste good but are also healthy, quick, easy and beginner friendly – yes, I’m looking at you, mr. bakugou “just fucking flip it and reduce for 3 days” katsuki – see the archive of her recipes here (x)
- has a tiktok dedicated entirely to trolling todoroki’s reactions with weird flavors of soba, these are my favorites (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7)
- she’s a self-taught chef who started as a dishwasher and worked up to being the sous chef at ryuko tatsuma’s restaurant dragoon before coming to the u.a. test kitchen and was regularly praised by food critics (1) (2) (3) (4) (5)
- has single-handedly saved u.a. millions of yen from that one time she stopped bakugou from ‘accidentally’ exploding an air fryer
- speaks fluent baku-rage, not to mention their chemistry is off the charts hoO BOY the slow burn is fucking real y’all
alright there’s so much more stuff but I fucking hate formatting links, so watch farm to table and follow uraraka on social media (twitter / instagram / tiktok) because this queen deserves our love. thanks for coming to my ted talk.

“Ugh.” Uraraka glared down at the sad, deflated lumps sitting in the middle of her ramekins. “Where is Aoyama when you need him?”
“That looks pathetic,” a blunt voice said, and Uraraka sighed as Bakugou came into the camera frame, leaning over the counter to peer into one cup with a skeptical look. “What the hell are you making?”
“Well, it’s supposed to be a pistachio-strawberry souffle.” She huffed, rubbing at her neck in frustration. “I can’t figure out how to get the nuts to distribute evenly… and it’s just not rising? I don’t get it – I remade my pastry cream like, three times, I know it’s fine, and I buttered my molds but it just…”
“You try freezing the molds after you butter them?” A frown came over Uraraka’s face as she shook her head. Bakugou grabbed one of the little cups, prodding the contents with a finger, and made a face. “Keeps it from contaminating your mixture and fucking up the rise.”
“When I make them at home, they’re usually fine at room temp,” she said dejectedly. “I don’t know why I can’t get it right today.”
The camera zoomed in a little, focusing on Bakugou’s expression as he glanced towards Uraraka. He looked a little concerned, and after a beat of silence, he came around the counter to stand beside her.
“Oi, don’t get all mopey on me, Cheeks.” He nudged her shoulder lightly, settling a hand across the back of Uraraka’s neck. “You good?”
She sighed heavily, leaning a little into his hand. “Yeah, yeah, I just… I don’t know. My brain isn’t working right now.”
“Tch.” Bakugou looked over the mess of bowls spread across the counter, eyes settling on the deflated looking egg-whites on one side. “Look – I’ll help ya out, just this once. Don’t quit on me now, yeah?
She blinked, looking up at him with furrowed brows. “But I thought… don’t you have that thing, with –”
“Don’t worry ‘bout it. This is more important,” he said, shrugging off his leather jacket and rolling up his sleeves. Uraraka just looked back at him in confusion.
“But…” She bit her lip hesitantly. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah.” Bakugou smirked back at her as he tied on his apron. “I got you, Cheeks.”

Uraraka rubbed her eyes, blinking as she gaped.
“You…” She looked up at him, chin trembling. “Did you really…?”
“Tch.” Bakugou huffed, trying to hide a smile. “What, your eyes don’t work now, Cheeks?” he teased.
“I just - ” Uraraka pinched herself, yelping at the pain, before a huge, toothy smile broke out across her face. “Oh my god, I can’t believe you actually did it.”
“You did get on your knees and beg, so…” He shrugged, snickering as Uraraka approached the counter reverently, her face glowing in sheer joy. “Ten kinds of mochi, as fuckin’ promised.”
She turned to him pleadingly. “Can I…?”
“I already took the photos.” He nodded at the spread, a rainbow of different colors delicately arranged with a pot of tea, ready to be eaten. “Go for it, babygirl.”
Uraraka already had a daifuku mochi halfway to her mouth, lips open as she got ready to take a bite, when an unfamiliar voice cut into the video.
“Wait a second.” Both of them paused to look at the camera in confusion. “Did he just call you babygirl?”
There was a beat of silence, before Uraraka’s face exploded into a bright red blush. Next to her, Bakugou quietly muttered, “Fuck.”

Worth the Risk, Part 9
Tumblr media
Rating: Mature(18+only)
Word Count: 1881
Pairing: Army Pilot!Poe Dameron x Nurse!Reader (1940s AU)
Summary: It’s the 1940s, Army pilot and Captain Poe Dameron is flying on missions for the United States Army in Europe.  After being shot down off the coast of France, Poe wakes up in an Army hospital in England, to find you, a nurse, taking care of him. Throughout the process of his recovery, Poe finds himself falling for you, and even though you, for the most part, maintain a professional relationship with him–you’re falling for him as well. Both of you know the risks of falling in love during a war, but then again, both of you have never cared much for being cautious.
Warnings:  Angst, swearing, blood (nothing too graphic though)
Taglist: @fanfic-addict-98, @thescarletknight2014, @blushingwueen, @americasass-romanoff, @ginger-swag-rapunzel, @spider-starry, @totelpoedameron, @captain-america5, @liadamerondjarin, @m1rkw00dpr1ncess
If you want to be added to the taglist, please let me know☺️I did my best to remain as historically accurate as possible. The GIF comes from Band of Brothers (highly recommended if you have not seen it, it is very good). Prior to the forces arriving on the beach, the Allies did drop paratroopers over Normandy to begin taking key bridges and locations. I do recommend at leasing watching the D-Day drop scene from Band of Brothers, it will definitely set the tone for this opening scene.
June 6, 1944--just after midnight
They flew by the cover of night over the English Channel. The tension on the plane was so thick that Poe was certain he could cut it with a knife. The unit of paratroopers were doing everything they could to calm their nerves; Poe heard lighters, smelled cigarette smoke. Some were muttering prayers, he had noticed a few of them clutching to rosary beads.  He was praying that the clouds would give them enough cover until they had to drop lower so the paratroopers could safely jump. Once they broke through the clouds for the drop it would be open season on the fleet of planes.
Poe would catch a quick glimpse of your photograph every now and then when he could take his eyes of the panels. He hoped that wherever you were, that you were safe. As they inched closer to the drop zone, Poe noticed the clouds light up, followed by a loud explosion.
“What is that?” Arana asked, peeking up from his position. “Thunder?”
“Not thunder,” Snap said, swallowing. “Shells.”
“They spotted us,” Poe stated. “Let those boys know we’re close.”
Snap flipped a switch on his panel, which turned a red light on in the back of the plane to signal that the paratroopers needed to prepare for their jump--they were getting close to the drop zone. He looked nervously at Poe. “Once we’re in range, Dameron, those shells have the potential rip this plane apart.”
Poe held the C-47 steady as they broke over the clouds and began to take heavy fire. “Then we just need to make this drop as quick as we possibly can and get the fuck back to England.  Arana, how much time until we reach the drop sight?”
Arana glanced at his maps and then his instruments. “Fuck, at least two minutes, Poe. We aren’t gonna survive this if we fly at this altitude for another two minutes!”
“We drop them here they’re way off target!” Poe shouted over the explosions.
“Dameron! If we don’t drop them here, we’re dead!” Arana yelled back as the hull of their plane was ripped up with bullets. “Jesus! Either we’re gonna blow up or be torn up by a machine gun!!”
“Can we pick up speed?”
“No! They won’t be able to make the jump if we do!”
Poe cursed as a bullet grazed his windshield, cracking it, and then the glass next to Snap shattered and his co-pilot screamed in pain. “Snap!” he cried, frantic. “Iolo! Snap’s been hit!”
Arana jumped forward. Behind him the glass next to their radio operator exploded. He managed to duck from the shrapnel, but their operator wasn’t as lucky as one lodged into his neck, killing him instantly. All three men sat there for a few seconds in sheer horror as the young man’s blood stained the cockpit floor--and then they remembered where they were as planes around them began to explode, plunging to the dairy fields below in fiery dives.
Reaching over, Poe flipped the switch and turned the jump light from red to green, signaling to the paratroopers to make the jump. He wasn’t sure if they were near the drop zone but at this point, if he wanted to get what remained of his crew home, he was going to have to have the airborne unit jump.
He wasn't sure how long it took them to make the jump, but once Arana gave him the signal that all the boys had vacated the plane, Poe turned it sharply and pushed the throttle as fast as the C-47 would let him to get them out of range of those German shells.
More glass shattered. Poe heard more metal being ripped apart by bullets and the plane shook underneath them with every shell volley that they somehow narrowly missed. For a few tense minutes, Poe wasn’t sure they were going. to make it out of range--but then suddenly the English Channel was before them and the terror of the German bombardment was behind them.
His heart was beating so rapidly that Poe believed it was actually beating out of his chest. “Holy shit,” he breathed now that the plane was steady. “How’s Snap?”
“Piece of glass is just above his heart, several gunshot wounds,” Arana replied. “Fuck he’s losing a lot of blood, Dameron.”
“Hang in there, Snap,” Poe encouraged. “We’ll get you back to the docs.”
“Yeah, they’ll patch you up, just like Poe.”
“Everything is going to be fine.”
Snap looked so pale. All he could muster was a slight nod of his head and a groan of pain while Arana applied pressure to as many of the gunshot wounds as he could to stop the blood loss.
Poe wished the plane could go faster. The doctors wouldn’t be able to help his friend once they got back to England if he bled to death before they even arrived. Come on, come on, come on! Each time he looked at Snap he could see that his friend was getting worse and worse. How was it that Poe had survived free falling from the sky into the ocean and Snap might not survive a bullet to his chest?
Once they were in radio range of the base, Poe was able to alert them that they needed medical assistance. When he landed the plane and it taxied to a stop, the medics were quickly on board, taking over for Arana.
Both of them stood there, silently for the longest time as another medical team took care of the radio operator’s body. Poe felt sick to his stomach knowing he was going to have to write another letter home to a fallen solider’s family.
Now that they were safe, he realized how close they’d all come to dying on this mission. The cockpit was covered in blood and shattered glass. Shakily, Poe and Arana got off their C-47, and finally saw the damage their plane had taken. It was laced with scorch marks and bullet holes.
“Fuck,” Arana cursed under his breath. “Nice flying, Dameron.”
“Thanks,” Poe replied. “I think.”
“Do you see our plane?”
“Yeah.”
“It’s like fucking Swiss cheese. Your flying got us back to England.”
“Personally, I think it was luck.”
Arana laughed, nervously. “Luck, divine intervention--call it whatever you want--we made it back from this one.”
Poe rubbed a hand over his face. Yes, they’d made it back. He wouldn’t know how many planes did make it until later. In the distance he could hear the engines of more returning and he sighed. “You should go get some sleep; not sure when we’ll be needed again.”
“What about you, Poe?” Arana questioned.
“Me? I’m going to the hospital to be with Snap,” Poe answered.
“If you go, I’m going too.”
“Iolo...”
“We’re a team, Poe.”
Yes, they were a team, and Poe knew that he wouldn’t be able to talk Arana out of coming to the hospital with him--so the pair of them went together to wait out the night for news on their friend.
-----
Shortly after the first planes took off for Normandy, your unit arrived at the base to be ready to take in wounded for when the fleet of C-47′s returned. It was predicted that they were going to be met with heavy fire from the Germans and while the planes might not sustain enough damage to go down--that didn’t mean their crews would come back unscathed.
Already your fatigues were stained with blood once the first wave of wounded arrived. Pilots and their crews lined the rows of cots in the medical tents; it took all of your will power to push thoughts of Poe from your mind while you worked on treating the men.
You knew that just because you didn’t see him amongst the wounded, it didn’t mean he had survived the flight to Normandy. There was still the chance that his plane had ended up in. the fields or at the bottom of the English Channel.
At 6:30 that morning word came that the Allies had landed on the beach. There was a somber mood in the hospital then. Everyone knew that the losses were going to be heavy.
“Lieutenant, you’ve been working all night. Head back. Get some sleep.”
You glanced up at the doctor your unit was now working for. He was a lot nicer than Hux and you were glad that Hux had been shipped off to somewhere else with the British Army. “Are you sure, Doctor Skywalker?”
He smiled, kindly at you. “Yes. I admire your worth ethic, Y/N, but you are not going to do these boys any good if you are exhausted. Report back this afternoon, alright?”
Nodding, you removed your white--or what used to be white--surgical scrubs, tossing them into a basket of other discarded scrubs. The sun was bright when you stepped out of the medical tent and the air smelled like rain. If it weren't it weren’t for the fact that the Allies were fighting for the very freedom of the the world right now, you might have loved the warm sunshine and lingering scent of rain.
Before you went back to your barrack to get some sleep, you decided to grab a shower--albeit very cold shower--but at least you’d be clean. But you didn’t make it to the shower...
...you saw him instead, sleeping against some crates just outside the hospital.
“Poe...”
He didn’t hear you; your voice was barely a whisper, but when you dropped to your knees next to him and grabbed his face between your hands he felt you and opened his eyes. Immediately, Poe sat up, drawing you into his arms and holding onto you tightly.
You sobbed into his shoulder and clung to him. He was alive. He was alright. For now, Poe was here and he was holding you; you were going to thank God for this moment.
Poe’s lips brushed against your hair before he pulled back to wipe the tears from your cheeks. He crashed his lips against yours and kissed you, heavily. Last night he wasn’t sure he was ever going to get to do that again--hell, he wasn’t even sure he was going to see England again last night.
“Why are you sleeping out here?” you asked when he pulled away from you.
“They wouldn’t let me in the hospital,” Poe answered.
Searching his eyes, you could tell that his flight last night had been hell. “Poe? What happened?”
Poe squeezed his eyes shut. “We got the paratroopers to Normandy. My plane is a wreck--lost my radio guy--Snap took shrapnel and a few bullets... the doctors took him to surgery but they wouldn’t let me in. So, I camped out here.”
Your fingers wandered to his hair, brushing it back from his forehead and still marveling that he was here with you. “Alone?”
“Nope,” another male voice said. “He had me.”
Startled, you watched as another man sat up just behind Poe and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. He smiled at you when he saw you. “Oh, so you’re the girl taped to the panels. Hi! Lieutenant Arana--I’m Captain Dameron’s navigator.”
Returning the smile, you remembered that name from Poe’s letter. He had been the one that was teasing Poe, the one that Poe had threatened to tell lies about to you in order to keep you from setting him up with one of your friends. “Hi, I’m Lieutenant Y/L/N.”
Poe brushed your hair, looking at you seriously. “Sweetheart, you look exhausted. Tell me you where on your way to sleep when you saw me?”
“I was.”
“Come on, I’ll walk you back to your barrack.”
“What about Snap?”
“Arana will come find me if he gets news.”
You glanced at the other man and he shrugged his shoulders, muttering, “It’s not like I’m going anywhere right now.”
Poe got up and held his hand out to you to help you to your feet. Once you were standing, the two of you began to walk back towards the barracks. “I’m gonna have to fly back there,” he told you. “Bombing missions; it could take us days to secure those beaches..”
Looking at your feet while you walked, you nodded. “I know. Until they're secure, we’re staying here.”
His lips brushed against your temple. “Good. It’s safer here.”
Taking a deep breath, you stated, “You don’t want me going there.”
“Fuck, no,” Poe cursed. “Our forces will be at risk for attack.”
“We’re at risk here.”
“Not as great, darling.”
It was hard to argue with that; you couldn’t argue with that. As you approached the nurses barracks you heard footsteps running behind you and Arana screaming for Poe.
Poe turned to see his friend and immediately he felt his heart sink. “What is it?”
Arana swallowed. “It’s Snap.”

Barbara Gordon made her DC comics debut in 1967 in Detective Comics #359, “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl.” Initially introduced to the comics as a way to test fan reception to the idea of a new “Batgirl” appearing in the 1960s ABC Batman show, Barbara would outlast her television counterpart and go on to become a vital part of the DC universe and a fan favorite character.
Under the cut is a summary of Barbara Gordon’s comic history pre-New 52 and an extensive list of comics in which she appears as the information jockey and wheelchair-using superhero, Oracle.
Basic Reading
Batman Chronicles #5 (1996)
Black Canary/Oracle: Birds of Prey (1996)
Birds of Prey (1999)
Batgirl (2000)
Batgirl (2009)
Birds of Prey (2010)
Pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths, Barbara was the daughter of Gotham Police Commissioner James Gordon and the head librarian at the Gotham City Public Library. Barbara takes on a second job as Batgirl after fighting Killer Moth while dressed up in a Batman-inspired costume for a masquerade ball. Although Batman is resistant to the idea of a girl helping him fight crime, he is unable to prevent Babs from assisting him and Robin in protecting Gotham. She also develops a close friendship and working relationship with Supergirl. During the 1970s, Barbara Gordon became a Congresswoman and continued to operate as Batgirl in Washington, D.C. After failing to be reelected, Babs returned to Gotham, where she worked as Batgirl up until the Crisis.
Post-Crisis on Infinite Earths, Barbara’s continuity underwent extensive reconstruction. No longer Jim Gordon’s daughter, she was his niece until her parents died while she was a teenager and her uncle brought her to Gotham and adopted her. A talented athlete and genius with a photographic memory, Babs longed to join the GCPD, but Jim did not like the idea of her having such a dangerous career. Eventually, Babs found her own way to help in joining Batman and Robin in fighting crime as Batgirl. In Batgirl Special (1988), Barbara retired from being Batgirl and resumed her civilian life. Later that year, the infamous graphic novel, The Killing Joke, was published. In Alan Moore’s story, Barbara Gordon was shot and assaulted by the Joker, in an attempt to drive her father insane. As a result of her gunshot wound, Babs was paralyzed from the waist-down and began using a wheelchair to get around. Although she served as little more than a plot device, the repercussions of what happened to her in The Killing Joke would reshape much of the DC Universe.
Here’s where Oracle enters. Although DC editorial, by and large, had no further plans for Barbara Gordon’s character post-Killing Joke, writers Kim Yale and John Ostrander sought to create a place in comics for a superhero in a wheelchair who had no special powers of her own. Thus, Oracle was created as Barbara Gordon’s hacker and information specialist superhero persona. Oracle would first appear in Ostrander’s run on Suicide Squad before slowly reappearing as a Batman supporting character in the 1990s. In 1996, Chuck Dixon wrote the one-shot Black Canary/Oracle: Birds of Prey, which eventually spun off into its own popular and much beloved series in 1999. Oracle remained an integral part of DC canon, training two new Batgirls, working with Batman, the Birds of Prey and even the Justice League, until the New 52 reboot in 2011, when DC decided to return Babs to her status as Batgirl. The editorial decision to have Barbara undergo surgery to rid her of her paralysis has undergone major scrutiny and been heavily maligned by disability advocates, however, Babs is no closer to returning to her role as Oracle or her wheelchair.
Below is a (mostly) chronological list of Oracle’s most prominent appearances in DC comics! (My personal favorites will be bolded.)
[As a note - many of Oracle’s early appearances have her hiding behind a computer/in a cameo role, as her identity was not yet revealed to comic readers. I am including these early appearances in my list to show people how the mystery unfolded, but if you want to skip they will be marked with an asterisk!]

- PINKY AND THE BRAIN - EXPERIMENTS -
Below the cut is a personal project on the much more morbid side. Animal lab experimentation is always something I’ve found equal parts horrible and fascinating. Once in a blue moon, I’ll do research on the subject out of curiosity and/or for storytelling purposes. Even as a kid, I found this of interest, and when watching Pinky and the Brain I was always a bit disappointed that we never saw more of what the characters actually went through in the lab during the day. Granted, there’s a reason as to why this was never shown, as a child audience had to be kept in mind, yet still I pondered about it....
Over the last few days, I’ve been churning out compositions based on internet findings -- old and new experiments that rats and mice are put through, many of them humane, some of them very much not. It was an eye-opening journey for me artistically and otherwise, discovering what I’m comfortable drawing and what I never want to sketch again, as well as learning more about this realm of the scientific world.
WARNING: SOME GRAPHIC CONTENT BELOW THE CUT. If needles, patients dealing with the effects of cancer, and general portrayals of pain bother you, I wouldn’t bother venturing onward. I not only drew out experiments that the characters might have gone through, but also describe all of my findings in detail and provide video footage to go along with it. While I didn’t go full-on vivisection or anything, some of this might still be disturbing, so I’m taking extra precaution.
All of the images below are “color-coded” and graded. The experiments start out fairly tame, then get worse... and worse... and worse. The backgrounds reflect this, going from fairly light to quite dark.
-------------
Tumblr media
Experiment #1 - Tail Flick Test
A fairly harmless experiment. The subject is mostly restrained, leaving only their tail exposed. An intense light beam is projected onto the exposed appendage, with the animal flicking their tail when the pain/heat becomes too much. This test is utilized in basic pain research and to measure analgesic effectiveness.
I wanted Brain to wear an expression of deep apathy -- he’s done this a million times and will probably do it a million times more. At this point, he doesn’t even care anymore.
For the background, I simply copied an environment in one of the videos I found.
Video example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzrA1tDTfkQ
Tumblr media
Experiment #2 - Rotarod Performance Test
Another experiment that’s generally harmless. One or multiple subjects are placed on elevated rotating rods so as to measure such things as endurance, balance, grip strength, and more.
I imagine Pinky would enjoy this test, as he’s familiar with running on a wheel and actually enjoys more strenuous activities. Brain, on the other hand, would only participate via sheer force. He’d also be more prone to fall after a shorter period of time, getting tired faster than his cage mate.
Video example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v56MtrmWAs0
Tumblr media
Experiment #3 - Shot (General)
Nothing special. Just Brain about to get shot.
This is all highly exaggerated, of course. A mouse would simply be held firmly, not strapped down, for a simple injection. Also, I can’t imagine why they’d be shot in the face, although Meg told me that scientists tend to draw blood samples from a mouse’s cheek. Need to look that up. I wasn’t at all going for accuracy here, but rather how it might feel -- how scary it would be.
Tumblr media
Experiment #4 - Sciatic Nerve Constriction
An experiment in chronic neuropathic pain, due to the central or peripheral nervous system sustaining damage. Under anesthesia, the animal’s sciatic nerve is exposed via skin incision. The connective tissue between the biceps femoris muscles and the gluteus superficialis is cut. The nerve is then loosely tied with four chrome gut ligatures so to occlude, but not arrest, blood flow. The wound is sutured, the animal is given 24 hours to recover, and then both hindpaws are tested for pain sensitivity. Sounds terrible, but it’s certainly not the worst of the experiments I researched.
I have no idea what’s going on with the coloring in this. Again, going for feel more than accuracy, but the hues are way too calm.

Tumblr media
Experiment #5 - Writhing Test
Particularly cruel test in which acetic acid is introduced into the system, inducing severe internal pain. The typical response includes writhing, abdominal retraction, and stretching of the hind limbs. Despite the test being withdrawn in 2004 for unethical reasons, it is still employed by some.
This was my favorite one to draw. Although the lighting and shading are not the greatest, it made for an interesting experiment. I did not intend for the lines to be so bold, but it kind of turned into an almost comic-style illustration. I ended up playing around with it a bit and like the result enough to post it.
I would not watch the video below if you are squeamish. It is difficult to swallow. On another note, you may find the “Empathetic Behavior: Emotional Contagion in Mice” section in the second link of interest. For cage mates in particular, if one or both mice were injected with the same acid, and allowed to observe one another, an injected mouse would writhe more if its partner was also in pain. I can’t help but imagine Brain and Pinky in this type of situation....

Experiment #6 - Transgenic K5ras Mouse / Nude Mouse (Combination)
Experiment in which cancer is induced in the system. Nude mice are bred for a number of tests, and are used for this one, as well.
My least favorite to draw, but my favorite to color. One particular experiment I found showed a tumor in every follicle on a mouse’s muzzle. Was trying to go for this look, albeit exacerbated.

Bonus:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is based on a test that I found absolutely hilarious. There’s a certain chemical, called W-18, that’s been on the drug market for... some years. The potency of it is supposedly insanely high, although this has never been proven. It’s basically a research chemical (created at a university in the 80s) with analgesic properties that were shown to be “painkillers or blockers of the painkilling effect of morphine in mice”. Mice, not humans. To quote a specific article:
“... when they first injected some of these chemicals into the animals at a dose similar to aspirin, the mice stood up for about a minute and fell over unconscious. They remained unconscious – for five days. But they weren’t dead. They were still breathing. And when they woke, they seemed fine, other than being really hungry and thirsty.”
They literally keeled over from the supposed potency of it. From what I recall, they don’t even know exactly what it was doing to their system, other than the fact that it knocked them out. I just find it funny that they were completely fine after awakening days later.
Although the pure smell of it wouldn’t cause such a reaction, I liked the idea of it in picture form and so depicted Brain simply taking a whiff before passing out.
Information link: https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidkroll/2016/04/30/w-18-the-high-potency-research-chemical-making-news-what-it-is-and-what-it-isnt/#2c45a5dd4757
-------------
Experiments researched, but not implemented:
- Tail dipped in ice cold water (mentioned here: cold water) - Morris water maze - Porton Down nerve agent test(s) (the worst; not even sure how I’d depict this)
The Porton Down tests sounded so indescribably cruel that I simply couldn’t bear to put Brain or Pinky through either of those, much less draw them out. It was the most horrific of the experiments I found, second only to a story about a French physiologist in the 1700s/1800s who performed, I believe, vivisection on live, six-week-old puppies. There’s a limit and that’s my limit. Even the cancer-based composition above was difficult to create. I legit felt dirty drawing it.
Researching these subjects was incredibly interesting, and I came across a few articles that touched on animal experimentation and the question of whether or not it’s ethical. Should such practices continue? It’s more complicated than a simple “yes” or no” answer. Some tests are fairly harmless, whilst others border on the inhumane, and some are downright cruel. Some people say that, without testing, there would be a lot less medicine on the shelves to assist in relieving and curing our ailments, whilst others argue that 90+% of the time the testing done is unnecessary, the results yielded by the subjects dissimilar to those that would be shown by humans and, henceforth, stating that the inaccuracies are numerous. This particular article offered up what I thought was a pretty genuine and interesting debate on the matter:
Pain in Lab Animals: How Much is Too Much?
In an interview with Dr. Jeffrey Mogil, a neuroscientist, he mentions that:
“You have complete control over everything in mice. Within limits, you can do whatever you want as long as you minimize pain and suffering of the subjects.“
Full interview: https://www.integrativepainscienceinstitute.com/latest_podcast/sex-differences-in-pain-and-pain-inhibition-with-dr-jeffrey-mogil/
While many establishments do follow the Animal Welfare Act, other laboratories still implement unethical practices. Also, the rules for what constitutes as acceptable in regards to tests that can only be performed without painkillers or anesthesia administered is... nebulous.
Thankfully, there is a number of lab testing equipment on the market specifically designed to be more humane and less stress-inducing to its subjects. These restrainers, for example, allow the animal to “walk in” without having to be physically forced backwards into a container:
Restrainers
Here is another example of testing that is relatively pain-free:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4401362/
It’s simple and inexpensive while still allowing scientists to perform tests.
Below is a video showing how a type of rotarod works, one that doesn’t place the rods too high and provides a cushion underneath in case the subjects fall:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T38fDS2i13k
This tail flick analgesia meter comes installed with a cut off timer to avoid damage to the animal:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgaStZt143o
So there are options. How often are such options utilized in the field? I have no idea, although there are laws that should be followed and, from the sound of it, generally are adhered to. Not everyone in this business is cruel. Though you do have your occasional psychopath who performs very morally questionable operations behind closed doors, I believe that this is a great exception to the rule, and that there are a lot of laboratory workers who genuinely want to inflict as little pain as possible upon the animal. Just an opinion. I don’t have tons of evidence, but it seems like most people are sane. Lol.
Most of the experiments I inflicted upon Brain because, I think, Pinky is so pure that I have a hard time imagining him sustaining any kind of extreme pain that would genuinely hurt him. Also, he borders on being freakin’ masochistic, finding pleasure in a lot of painful situations, whereas Brain does not. Brain has been through a lot, mentally and physically. It seemed more... “appropriate” to put him in these situations, as terrible as that sounds.
All of that having been said, I never want to do this kind of exercise again. While a lot of it was interesting, and some of it even fun, parts of it were legitimately painful. The cancer one.... I felt horrible....

Past prophets have also been under obligation to take humankind by the hand and show all the roads leading to physical and spiritual ascension; thus, they too have shown the precious path of zakat as part of a primordial effort to diminish class differences in societies and to provide a judicious and blissful lifestyle remote from detrimental excessiveness. By virtue of providing examples of previous Prophetic applications, the Qur’an does much to put the accent on this mission. Following a brief reference in the Qur’an to the prophets Abraham, Isaac and Jacob comes the following declaration:
And We made them leaders to guide people in accordance with Our command: We inspired in them acts of virtue, the establishment of salat and payment of zakat. They were worshippers of Us. (Anbiya 21:73)
In reference to Prophet Ishmael, the matchless significance of salat and zakat as the primordial existence of alms as an essential component of worship is underlined from early on: “He used to enjoin his people salat and zakat, and was acceptable in the sight of his Lord” (Maryam 19:55).
Salat and zakat, in actual fact, are the common denominators of all monotheistic religions, where salat and zakat, after belief in the Oneness of God, form the very core of worship. In fact, salat and zakat are, or at least were, essential characteristics of all of the great religions of the world, those guided by a long line of prophets sent by God since the dawn of humankind, despite the fact that current forms of worship in some faith communities may vary in outward appearance. In support of this, the Qur’an, adamantly states:
They were ordered no more than to worship God with sincere devotion, to honestly establish salat and give zakat. And that is the Standard Religion.” (Bayyina 98:5)
The following verse, which provides insight into how the people of Midian first received teachings of Prophet Jethro (Shuayb) teachings about obligatory zakat, bears testimony to its practice in preceding times:
In sarcasm, they said, “O Jethro! Does your salat command you that we should abandon what our forefathers worshipped or that we should cease doing what we like with our property? Conversely, you are pleasant and right- minded.” (Hud 11:87)
The Midians’ apprehension at being compelled to cease doing what they liked with their properties denotes, almost certainly, a remonstration againstzakat. The people of the Midian, who evidently had complete appreciation for the altruistic Jethro, still could not get themselves to accept or follow Jethro’s brave attempts to encourage them to perform proper salat or give zakat; branding him instead as an instigator, and a rebel. As is the usual case with similar public dissentions, the people of Midian had a ready scapegoat for giving full vent to their frustrations about the obligation of zakatwhich was, as can be seen, salat itself.
Even though the Qur’an does not explain, literally, whether or not each prophet carried the duty of imposing zakat, it is highly possible to argue for its primordial existence through the i d e a l notion of peace, the humane spirit of assistance and support represented and accentuated by each Messenger, beginning with the Prophet Adam, and the Qur’anic references discussed above.
In addition, despite having their initial contents altered, the Torah and the Bible still include many passages which support the proposition that zakatactually predates Islam. As no revelations prior to Muhammad %(upon whom be peace) have survived to this day in their original forms, a fact supported even among Jewish and Christian scholars, the sole, authoritative point of reference in this argument remains the Qur’an itself. Additionally, it is worth noting that the Qur’an stresses zakat was enjoined as a duty on Jews and Christians, as well, not just on Muslims, as the textual references to the Qur’an which are included below will clearly demonstrate. Likewise, an analysis of the Torah and the Bible provides fascinating similarities and conformities with Islam’s all-embracing concept of zakat.
CAN YOU PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT
ZAKAT
IN JUDAISM?
The Qur’an generally tends to speak of the Jews as somewhat “skaters on thin ice,” underlining their preponderantly neglectful attitude concerning their religious responsibilities and periodically provides us a detailed account of what exactly those responsibilities were:
And (remember) when We made a covenant with the Children of Israel, We said; “Serve none but God, show kindness to your parents and to your relatives, to the orphans and the needy; speak kindly to humankind, establish the prayer and pay the zakat. But with the exception of a few, you turned away and paid no heed. (Baqara 2:83)
Zakat along with salat is sternly recommended as a requirement for divine acquittal for their transgressions:
God made a covenant of old with the Children of Israel, and We raised among them twelve chieftains, and God said: “I am with you. If you establishsalat and pay the zakat, and believe in My Messengers and support them, and lend to God a goodly loan, surely I shall remit your sins, and surely I shall admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow. Whosoever among you disbelieves after this has gone astray from a straight path.” (Maida 5:12)
And in spite of undergoing multiple amendments, the current text of the Torah still grants us glimpses of the spirit of zakat, grounded on the relations between the rich and the poor:
Jehovah has not despised or been disgusted with the plight of the oppressed one. He has not hidden His face from that person. Jehovah heard when that oppressed person cried out to Him for help. (Psalms 22:24)
When you help the poor (needy) (lowly) (depressed) you lend to Jehovah. He will pay you back. (Proverbs 19:17)
He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker. He who has mercy for the poor honors his Maker. (Proverbs 14:31)
This is what you must do whenever there are poor Israelites in one of your cities in the land that Jehovah your God is giving you. Be generous to these poor people. Freely lend them as much as they need. Never be hardhearted and stingy with them. When the seventh year, the year when payments on debts are canceled, is near, you might be stingy toward poor Israelites and give them nothing. Be careful not to think these worthless thoughts. The poor will complain to Jehovah about you, and you will be condemned for your sin. Give the poor what they need, because then Jehovah will make you successful in everything you do. (Deutoronomy 15:7-12)
He who gives to the poor will not lack. But he who hides his eyes will have many curses. (Proverbs 28:27)
And if you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then your light will rise in darkness and your gloom will be like midday. (Isaiah 58:10)
He who gets ahead by oppressing the poor and giving to the rich will certainly suffer loss. (Proverbs 22:16)
It is certainly easy, by and large, to draw a connection between the above verses and many Qur’anic passages, not to mention the conspicuously striking similarities between some. It is these considerable parallels that lead us to the conclusion that the ideas and instructions all stem from the same source, God, and that the essential issues concerning humankind have, quite surprisingly, undergone very little change despite human’s apparent weakness as a transmitter over time.
One further point deserves mention. The above quotations gathered from the Torah, as well as the upcoming Biblical passages, are from current versions of the texts which have, as is widely accepted and was noted above, been partially or predominantly altered, though the exact extent and manner in which such changes have been brought to these ancient scriptures is a matter for debate. A tentative and prudent approach to the current versions is thus the correct attitude, as recommended wisely by the Prophet Muhammad (upon whom be peace) himself:
When the People of the Book utter a narration, do not agree nor disagree with them, but say, “We only believe in God and His Messengers.” This way, concurrence is avoided if they speak lies, and denial is avoided provided that they speak the truth.48
IS THERE INFORMATION ABOUT
ZAKAT
IN CHRISTIANITY?
The situation in Christianity is no different, for the Prophet Jesus, while still in the cradle, utters the duties obliged onto him by God in the following manner:
(Whereupon) he (the baby) spoke out: “I am indeed a servant of God. He has given me the Scripture and has appointed me a prophet. And He has made me blessed whereever I may be and has commanded me to pray and to give alms to the poor as long as I live. And (He) has made me dutiful to my mother and has not made me oppressive, wicked. So peace be upon me the day I was born and the day that I die and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again).” (Maryam 19:30-33)
Considering the fact that the Bible predominantly focuses on ethical issues, a jurisprudential adherence to the Torah, so to speak, was a social necessity. Nonetheless, there are copious Biblical verses which themselves allude to zakat and sadaqa. The following passages may throw light on this discussion; of course, the possible alterations to these passages must be kept in mind:
Be careful! Do not display your righteousness (good works) before men to be noticed by them. If you do, you will have no reward with your heavenly Father. Do not loudly announce it when you give to the poor. The hypocrites do this in the houses of worship and on the streets. They do this to be praised by men. Believe me, they have already been paid in full. When you give charity, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. (Matthew 6:1-3)
He looked at him and was afraid. “What is it, Lord?” he replied. The angel said: “God hears your prayers and sees your gifts of mercy. (Acts 10:4)
He said: Cornelius, your prayer is heard and your gifts of mercy are noticed in the sight of God. (Acts 10:31)
Jesus then replied: “If you wish to be complete, go sell your possessions and give the money to the poor. You will have wealth in heaven. Then follow me!” But hearing these words, the young man went away grieving, for he was very wealthy. Jesus said to his disciples: “Truly I tell you, it is hard for a man with much money to go into the kingdom of heaven. Again I say, it is eas ier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a man with much money to go into the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19:21-24)
Sell your possessions and give to charity. Make yourselves purses that do not get old, a treasure in heaven where moth and rest cannot corrupt and thieves cannot steal. (Luke 12:33)
And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, I gain nothing. (Corinthians 13:3)
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy and faith. You should do both and leave nothing undone. (Matthew 23:23)
It is thus quite possible to, again, draw connections between the Qur’an and Hadith, on the one hand, and many Biblical passages. The level of conspicuous similarities between the above texts accentuates their unity of origin. Adopting this approach in scrutinizing the Torah and the Bible will, undeniably, offer us much more evidence culminating in the very same conclusion.

Thursday 7 August 1828
5 40/60
1
The mail not starting from our house this morning, off to the Bush at 6 1/2 – paid my fare (by the way imposed on – inconsequence of opposition, the fare reduced from 20/. [shillings] to 16/. [shillings] as confessed by the Landlord at Selkirk; but, said he, passengers forwarded from Liverpool still pay 20/. [shillings], and if a place is secured the night before, they make you pay additional (nonsense!) – they [cutely] made me pay 20/. [shillings] thinking me a stranger and that I should not find it out) – mounted behind the coachman – sat waiting above 1/4 hour, and off at 6 3/4 –
Fine rich well-wooded country – capital road – 6 miles from Carlisle, cross the small river line and here begins Sir James Graham’s property, and extends 4 miles beyond Longtown i.e. as far as we have to go in England – 8 miles from Carlisle the nice, neat, large, old village church, the nice small village (1/2 dozen houses?), and the very pretty wood-hidden parsonage of Arthuret (reverend Fergus Graham, uncle to Sir James Graham) –
Change horses at Longtown (good little brick town) at 7 35/60 in 4 minutes – on driving along the town, look down upon Sir James’ prettily wooded farm houses – at the end of the town pass narrow 5 arch stone bridge over the broad gravelly bedded Esk rather low just now, but a good river – cross it 4 times this ‘beautiful stage, said our coachman – at 7 3/4 turn right, and see (right distant) among fine woods croft head a largeish white house where the present Sir James lived during his father’s life – Esk close, right - at 7 55/60 (11 miles from Carlisle) apparently in front of Netherby Hall, at a considerable distance right, large white house, among fine and extensive woods – ‘beautiful place’ (said the coachman) ‘but fronts the tother way’ –
Several stooks of barley cut, (the 1st corn cut save the oats going to Dumfries on Monday and hay in cock here, and nearer Carlisle in Swathe – at 8 two turnpikes very near together, and better than a little ditch that parts England and Scotland, and here begins the duke of Bucleugh’s property – we go 30 miles in his estate which reaches to Hawick – great many [?] houses by the way – all belong to the duke –
At 8 10/60 very pretty, picturesque, wooded, white village of [Gannaby] (as pronounced) – good, new church little distance right – broad gravel-bedded Esk just below us right, and cross 3 arch-bridge over it – water very low now – beautiful here – at 8 25/60 little village of Car-saddle, white straw thatched and some blue slated cottages – (as prounounced) – river below – rocky bed – wooded banks, with large high 1 arch-bridge which we cross – very beautiful at a short distance (right) Glenochy castle Johnny Armstrong – square tower with the 2 high gables of the ruined roof still standing at the top – 20 minutes through a wood (some fine picturesque Swiss firs in it, with some good larches here and there – how infinitely the best of the fir-tribe and the Swiss fir!), and at 8 3/4 cross the Esk again (2 arch-bridge) pass a whiskey-distillery, and at 8 53/60 enter the neat little town of Langholm – ‘Tis certainly a ‘beautiful’ richly wooded drive from Longtown to Langholm – well satisfied to have come –
Changing horses or watering generously take 5 minutes – off from Langholm at 8 57/60 – Langholm lodge (the duke’s shooting box – he sometimes comes to shoot) near the town, [if] the [valley] (left) – From Langholm go along Ewesdale unlived by here and there a white farm house or cottage – the Ewes (close, right) a small stream running along the foot of the green, high, rounded topped very occasionally rather heathery Lillip Hills –
At 9 50/60 turn left into Moss fall glen – very fine and very beautiful, green glen, or pass – just wide enough for the road and the Throstleybird burn (right) – ‘tis 2 fine ranges of the Lillup hills that form this short but fine glen – at moss fall house (very neat yellow-washed – little Inn – lone house) at 10 – fine and sunshiny – the glen widens out a little here – the stables in Dumfriesshire – the house in Roxburghshire – this is the highest ground – from here the waters run different ways, and the Throstley burn ceases to run westwards, and runs Eastwardly - at 10 35/60 the Throstley burn falls into the Tiviot, and we henceforward proceed along the fine dale of Tiviot –
At 11 1/2 stop at the Tower Inn, Hawick, a good dark-coloured stone built town – market day – a cold collation laid out in the coffee room – 3 coffee room compartments in divisions – have not met with this before – not having had an[y] breakfast, sat down determined to make the best of the 1/4 hour allowed – had it all to myself – ate 1 1/2 leg of the fowl and some good new potatoes – much the better, and on the coach again (had had the box seat from Langholm), and off at 11 3/4 – at the end of the town cross narrow 3 arch stone bridge over the broad shallow Tiviot – then hilly road over high, plain, almost unenclosed ground all the way to Selkirk – at 12 1/4 view for a while of the Eildon hills see only 2 summits (the 3rd much lower and not seen I should suppose unless from near) vide Scotland tourist 309/415, at 12 1/2 little village, and cross (1 arch-bridge) the Ale-water, a small stream – descend up upon Selkirk, surrounded by plain hills, and at 1 10/60 alight at the Inn there and leave the mail – (it would reach Edinburgh between 4 and 5?) – It seems, I have little chance of getting the 4/. returned I paid too much for my place this morn[in]g – however the landlord here very civil – goodish little darkish-coloured stone built town –
Off at 1 40/60 for Melrose in a very uneasy though neat-looking gig – roughish old-paved road – the rather broadish shallow pretty Ettrick river below us, left – falls into the Tweed about 2 miles? below Selkirk – about 4 miles from Selkirk (left) Abbotsford, Sir Walter Scott – he built it by [degrees] – just below the house the Gala water falls into the Tweed – an irregular, old-style, castellated (label-windowed) sort of English manor-house – of dark coloured stone white corner-stones – the sort of castle-court gateway, too of white stone – curious sort of iron-rail gothic screen parts the garden from the court, yet allows it to be seen – a Tower at each of 3 of the corners of the house – 1 tower round, 1 square and 1 hexagon or octagon? – a large flag flying – the boy-driver knew not why – but ‘Sir Walter always had it flying on some days’ – walked down to the house, and looked at the outside for 5 minutes – the short approach road, a broad walk through a young plantation, rather shrubbery like at present – well wooded in the distance – [genteely] looking place – will not be seen from the road when the plantation gets up – fine valley – 1st view of Melrose abbey about 1/2 mile from Melrose – does not look well – the square tower low, too large, and smooth, and even looking – as if lately built – the rest of the ruin huddled on a heap – not at all picturesque as these seem in the distance – the red-shingle sided Eildon hills (right) fine –
Alight at the George Inn, Melrose, at 3 10/60 – somehow feel languid, rather lightheaded, and tired?
No motion this morning
Read the Scotland tourist – take 1/4 hour’s nap – had nodded and dozed every now and then as I came along this morning – not certainly a safe situation for so doing – go out at 4 1/2 to the abbey – a very nice woman shew it – her husband a man of genius, John Bower, had had a [draw], and could not come to me – very fine ruin – unquestionably finer than that at Elgin? – the finest far I have seen in Scotland, or anywhere? – vide Scotland tourist 306/415 et seq. – the carving ‘like lace-work’ is the curly leaf of the Scotch Kale, very beautiful on the capital of the great pillar at the head of the south side the nave – the woman asked me to her house to see her husband’s drawings – surprised to find him quite a self-taught artist – beautiful little pencil sketch (south east view – the best) of the abbey 9/. worth it – had sold almost all of any kind – bought a rough lithograph of this view, and ditto of abbotsford –
Came back to the Inn at 6 50/60 – would wait till they baked me some [ned] cakes (of flower and cream in the frying pan) – went out again – past the good new church handsome spire, the rest like a common methodist meeting house, as usual in Scotland – the body of the church of darkish-reddish stone ditto the tower up to the roof of the building – the spire part of white stone – curious, unpleasing effect – down to the new suspension bridge built by subscription of the inhabitants – opened 26 October 1826 – about 11 1/2 yards slope up to the pillars – each pillar about 2 yards by 2 feet – height I cannot guess – the bridge over the water (between the pillars) 98 yards long – 1 3/4 yard wide – very neat thing – pillars very neat – battlemented at the top – red sandstone – walked into the picturesque little wood [?] village of Gattonside –
Returned a different way into the town – and got back to the Inn at 7 3/4 – tea – the ned cakes very good – read Scotland tourist – speak to the landlord – send my luggage by the coach tomorrow to Jedburgh, and walk myself in order to see all by the way – settle accounts wrote out journal of today – all which had taken me till 12 – very fine day – though felt cold this morning till after Hawick – went to my room at 12 -

via Politics – FiveThirtyEight
While the COVID-19 virus continues to dominate headlines, the Democratic presidential primary marches on — for the most part, at least. On Tuesday, four states vote, including some of the most delegate-rich states in the country. The main question now is just how much of an edge does former Vice President Joe Biden have in each contest, given his strong position overall. (Our model thinks he has a more than 99 percent chance of winning the majority of pledged delegates.) The results on Tuesday could affect how long Sen. Bernie Sanders stays in the race — and how soon Biden secures that delegate majority, and thus the nomination.
So here’s a closer look at what our forecast has to say about the two Sun Belt states casting ballots on Tuesday: Florida and Arizona. (You can read about Tuesday’s Midwestern contests, in Illinois and Ohio, here.)
Biden is favored to defeat Sanders by large margins in both Florida and Arizona. He has a greater than 99 percent chance of winning the most votes in Florida, according to our forecast, and a 98 percent chance in Arizona.
Let’s look at Florida first. The Sunshine State is worth 219 pledged delegates, and Biden wins, on average, 68 percent of the vote there, versus just 27 percent for Sanders, per our forecast. A result like that would likely give Biden the bulk of Florida’s 76 statewide delegates.
Florida’s other 143 pledged delegates are apportioned according to how the candidates perform in each of the state’s 27 congressional districts, but there’s not much good news for Sanders at the district level either. Instead, Biden’s large statewide edge is reflected, to varying degrees, in every district. His smallest average margin in any district is still a whopping 33 percentage points. And there are even a few districts where Sanders’s forecasted vote share is only a few points above the 15 percent threshold needed to qualify for delegates — in other words, it’s possible that Sanders will miss out on winning any delegates in a handful of Florida districts on Tuesday.
Biden should rack up Florida delegates — everywhere
Average forecasted vote share for the top two Democratic presidential candidates in Florida congressional districts, according to the FiveThirtyEight model as of 6 p.m. on March 15
District Biden Sanders FL-01 69% 27% FL-02 70 26 FL-03 69 26 FL-04 67 28 FL-05 76 19 FL-06 68 28 FL-07 66 29 FL-08 67 28 FL-09 68 28 FL-10 71 25 FL-11 67 28 FL-12 65 30 FL-13 67 28 FL-14 69 27 FL-15 68 28 FL-16 66 29 FL-17 67 28 FL-18 68 27 FL-19 66 29 FL-20 76 20 FL-21 68 26 FL-22 68 27 FL-23 67 28 FL-24 75 21 FL-25 64 31 FL-26 66 29 FL-27 64 31 State 69 27
Biden’s three strongest districts — thanks to his overwhelming support from black voters — are all either majority or plurality African American. He projects to win at least 75 percent of the vote, on average, in the 5th Congressional District that stretches across northern Florida (including parts of Jacksonville and Tallahassee), as well as in the 20th and 24th Congressional districts in South Florida, stretching from parts of Palm Beach to Miami. But Biden also gets around 70 percent in fairly white and rural districts, such as the 1st and 2nd Congressional districts in the Florida Panhandle, owing to his solid showings among white voters in the South. Indeed, Sanders’s weakness among black voters and southern whites makes him a particularly poor fit for Florida.
Sanders has performed better among Hispanic voters than Biden, but that will likely be less true in Florida, particularly in South Florida, where many Hispanics are Cuban Americans. As my colleagues Amelia Thomson-DeVeaux and Nathaniel Rakich wrote, Sanders’s identification as a “democratic socialist” — and his refusal earlier this year to condemn former Cuban President Fidel Castro may be off putting to many Cuban Americans, who tend to be more anti-socialism given Cuba’s socialist past.
Moving west across the southern U.S., Arizona doesn’t look to be a Biden blow-out quite on Florida’s level, but it still doesn’t look all that competitive. Our forecast gives Biden a 49 in 50 (98 percent) chance of winning Arizona, leaving Sanders with only a 1 in 50 shot. Twenty-three of Arizona’s 67 pledged delegates will be awarded based on the statewide vote share, and Biden wins an average of 58 percent compared to Sanders’s 34 percent, according to our forecast.
The other 44 pledged delegates will come from each of Arizona’s nine congressional districts. And as the table below shows, we expect the outcomes in these seats to look pretty similar, with Biden holding a 20-plus point advantage in each district. Still, there’s no risk of Sanders missing the 15 percent threshold anywhere, unlike in Florida.
Biden leads in Arizona, but Sanders will win some delegates
Average forecasted vote share for the top two Democratic presidential candidates in Arizona congressional districts, according to the FiveThirtyEight model as of 6 p.m. on March 15
District Biden Sanders AZ-01 60% 32% AZ-02 58 34 AZ-03 58 34 AZ-04 59 33 AZ-05 56 35 AZ-06 57 34 AZ-07 58 35 AZ-08 57 35 AZ-09 57 35 State 58 34
Biden has a sizable edge in both of Arizona’s majority-Latino seats: the 3rd Congressional District that sits mostly southwest of Phoenix and runs along the U.S.-Mexico border, as well as the 7th Congressional District in Phoenix. And while that may be a little surprising because Sanders has been stronger among Latino voters than Biden thus far, it’s important to remember that most primary voters in Arizona will be non-Hispanic white. There was no exit poll for the Democratic primary in 2016, but data from the Cooperative Congressional Election Study estimated that around 70 percent of the electorate was non-Hispanic white then.
Still, there’s a chance that Sanders will do better in the seats with large Latino populations — a recent Mason-Dixon poll of only Latino voters in Arizona found Sanders narrowly ahead of Biden — but it’s also possible that Biden’s lead as the front-runner will eat into some of Sanders’s support among Latinos. That poll was conducted in the days just after Super Tuesday, and Biden’s grip on the nomination is considerably tighter now.
In short, Biden is a heavy favorite to win both of these states on Tuesday, likely by margins that will add to his already considerable delegate lead over Sanders. If Sanders is to remain at all competitive, he needs to do far better than the polls show in places like Florida and Arizona.
Check out all the polls we’ve been collecting ahead of the 2020 elections.

Secrets and Killing — Thoughts on: Secrets Can Kill/Secrets Can Kill Remastered (SCK/SCK2)
Hello and welcome to a Nancy Drew meta series! 30 metas, 30 Nancy Drew Games that I’m comfortable with doing meta about. Hot takes, cold takes, and just Takes will abound, but one thing’s for sure: they’ll all be longer than I mean them to be.
Each meta will have different distinct sections: an Introduction, an exploration of the Title, an explanation of the Mystery, a run-through of the Suspects. Then, I’ll tackle some of my favorite and least favorite things about the game, and finish it off with ideas on how to improve it. If any game requires an extra section or two, they’ll be listed in the paragraph above, along with links to previous metas.
These metas are not spoiler free, though I’ll list any games/media that they might spoil here: SCK, SCK2, episode 1X14 of The Mentalist.
The Intro:
We’re beginning with Secrets Can Kill/Remastered, not only because it’s first, but also because it’s one of the easier games to analyze. The plot isn’t anything especially complicated, the suspects are caricatures, the locations are pretty barren — and all of this is true in both versions. It’s a short, unsatisfying game, which spawned a short, unsatisfying remake that fixed some things and ruined others.
The Title:
The title itself sounds like the murder occurred because Jake was keeping secrets (not because he was blackmailing people with them) — and it’s also incredibly vague — so as a title, I wouldn’t say it’s incredibly effective. The word “kill” is evocative, to be sure, but I think that’s the strongest part of the title by leagues.
The Mystery:
Nancy’s Aunt Eloise is a school librarian whose school finds a student murdered — so her first instinct is to call her plucky 18-year-old niece to come solve it.
The murdered student, Jake Rogers, has left cryptic messages in the school and the nearby diner, pointing towards not only what caused his murder, but also how to solve the crime and catch his murderer. There’s actually a really chilling clue that Jake tells us “will seal [his] murderer’s fate” — meaning that in the course of leaving these clues, Jake knew he’d be murdered.
Perhaps that’s a justification for the actual mystery being so /easy/ — the game can be beaten in under 45 minutes without too much trouble, sadly enough (obviously discounting the time spent in the original version switching discs).
The identity of the murderer/bad guy(s) is…honestly pathetic in both versions as well, with the biggest difference being screen time rather than complexity or plausibility. The remastered version nerfs the ending where Nancy stands for Truth, Justice, and Guns, and instead employs a rather ridiculous ending that’s meant to test you on your recall from the beginning of the game…but fails, because the beginning of the game was under an hour ago.
The Suspects:
Hal Tanaka (whose name in Japanese I’m guessing is actually Tanaka Haru or something longer but similar, since “l” isn’t a phoneme in Japanese, and no word can end in any consonant other than “n”) is a student at Paseo Del Mar who focuses very hard on getting the best grades he can possibly get —through both honest and dishonest means.
As a suspect, he’s pretty pathetic; there’s not a single minute where he’s even remotely plausible as Jake’s murderer, and he’s really just there to make sure that there’s “enough” suspects to seem more complex (and to pad out the run time of the game).
He also never pays for his plagiarism? Like the kid is a senior going into college and he just straight up copies the Big Essay? And it’s not really well written — if you’re gonna cheat, cheat well, Hal. It really bothers me that Nancy’s like “and he got his scholarship! Huzzah!” when the dude is a Stone-Cold Cheater.
Jake’s blackmailing him because of the aforementioned plagiarism, which…like, blackmailing is Not Right, but am I supposed to feel like Hal is the Victim here because he’s planning on taking a scholarship that he doesn’t deserve with his plagiarized paper away from another kid who does deserve it because they have the smarts and effort to write their own? Is that what this game is telling me to think? Because the game is wrong.
If Hal has the smarts to do Jake’s homework for the rest of the year, dude has the smarts to write his own essay. He’s a lazy coward, and I’d blackmail him too.
Connie Watson is the official tattletale (sorry, “hall monitor”) of Paseo Del Mar, and spends the game in the “student lounge” (what kind of bougie high school is this?) doing…nothing at all, honestly. I get that it’s the end of the year, Connie, but…go home. There’s no way school is in session, a murder just happened there.
She parades her Judo trophy-necklace around like she’s not being blackmailed for it and that, in 1998 or 2010, no one would recognize it? I mean we definitely know that Connie’s not getting a scholarship, girl is flat out dumb. She comes off better in the 1998 version where she at least gets to use those Mad Judo Skills, but she’s not an important character in either version, to be quite honest.
Connie’s being blackmailed because she won a men’s Judo competition…by wearing…a ski mask…yeah, there’s no defense for this, not in ’98 and not in ’10. Anyway, Jake is blackmailing her into going to the dance with him because he saw her taking off her mask (which she definitely should have done in a more secret location if she wanted it to be a secret?) but like…girlfriend is Flaunting her little neck-trophy, so I honestly don’t see what sway he has over her. It’s Very Wrong of him to do so, yes, yes…but he’s got no power here, and Connie’s an idiot if she thinks so.
She’s an idiot anyway, and once again is never even a consideration for Jake’s killer. What an interesting choice, to have two separate characters as the “dumb muscle” stereotype. And this one’s a girl! #feminism
Daryl Gray is the SBP of Paseo Del Mar, along with basically the manager (from what we see) of Maxine’s Diner, creepy escort, police contact…you name it, Daryl’s your bleach-blond guy.
He’s also super shifty; in the original game, he’s involved in drug trafficking, and in the remastered version, he’s selling his father’s company’s secrets. He also hits on Nancy a lot, but since Nancy never tells him to knock it off, that’s a Mild offense at best.
Daryl is being blackmailed in the original game because of the drug trafficking, and in the remastered version because of the whole leaking company secrets thing. Daryl 100% deserves to be blackmailed for that, as both of those things are Very Illegal, and he’s being Very Stupid about them. Yes, I understand that blackmail is illegal as well.
Hulk Sanchez is a character with as much subtlety as his name would imply, and is the star football player for Paseo Del Mar. Injured on the field and yet still looking to play college (and eventually pro) football, Hulk steals steroids and takes them, putting the “muscle” in “dumb muscle”.
Hulk is, true to his one-note character, being blackmailed for the whole “stealing drugs” thing (which seems to be his only character trait), as Jake wants him to deliver messages for him. Hulk by far got off the easiest, and if I were him and could be busted for both theft and drug use, would be thrilled that I was getting off this easy. Having no sense of perspective, Hulk instead rants to everyone about how Jake Rogers was a “punk” and how it’s a good thing that he’s dead.
Mitch Dillon, the school’s janitor, is the original baddie in the 1998 game, and is Unseen throughout the ENTIRE game, appearing only at the end to wave a gun around and punch Connie before being apprehended.
In the 1998 game, he’s buying drugs off of Daryl, whereas in the 2010 remake, he’s buying company/government secrets off of Daryl and selling them to Detective Beech. In both cases, Jake tries to blackmail him for his crimes, and he kills him. Both games see him arrested, but neither one actually treats him like a character, and he is, ultimately, a plot device that weakens the games.
Lastly, the remake introduces the character of “Detective Beech” (real name unknown), who also goes by “Uncle Steve” in his guise as Nancy’s police contact.
He is, of course, nothing of the sort, and has lost his journal with Gray Enterprises’ dirty little secrets that Mitch sold to him, and “hires” Nancy to find it under the guise of searching for Jake’s killer. Cartoonish and so obviously the Bad Guy that you’ll lose your voice yelling at Nancy to stop telling him things, he tries to kill Nancy when she finds out the truth and ends up trapped in Aunt Eloise’s kinky sex cage intruder cage thanks to Nancy telling him (repeatedly) the wrong combination to the safe. Yeah.
“Detective Beech” in-universe is a TV show mentioned in passing in STFD, VEN, and TOT, which makes the fact that Nancy fell for this disguise even sadder. That’d be like some criminal posing as an officer being like “call me Detective Columbo” and you being like “that sounds Plausible, yes”. Honestly.
It’s interesting that this game sets up a story where most of the suspects are “cheating” in some way or the other — Hal’s plagiarism, Connie’s joining of the competition, Hulk’s steroids, etc. I’m not sure this was purposeful, and I’m even less sure that it really means anything, but it’s interesting to note, regardless.
The Favorites:
There’s not much about this game that I like, to be quite honest. I enjoy Jake (more on him below), and Ned’s cheesiness as a phone contact, and the fact that it’s Mercifully Short.
Also Hulk is SUCH an enormous douche that it’s almost funny. And Aunt Eloise’s kinky sex cage intruder cage.
If I have to choose a favorite puzzle, it’s reading all of the signs Jake hid around the school/Maxine’s diner.
Or the ladle for the sheer stupidity.
The Un-favorites:
Everything else about the game.
The visuals are “blah” (except Remastered!Daryl, who is the stuff of effing nightmares), the characters are cardboard cutouts with a combined IQ of 7, and Nancy comes off weak and stupid as a result.
The villain(s) are one-note and boring, and the attempt to improve the game by remastering it made it easier to play (no disc-switching, faster loading, etc.) and had some campy yet cute easter eggs, but on the whole introduced new problems to the plot and took away Nancy Using an Effing Gun. Boo.
I have no favorite puzzles, as they’re all horrible or horribly easy. Nothing in this game stands out.
Well…maybe one thing stands out, but it’s not to the game’s credit.
The Fix:
The first (and biggest) thing I’d do to fix SCK is to set it in or near River Heights.
Yeah, there’s a throwaway line about this not being Nancy’s first case, but it doesn’t have to be her first case to make more sense in River Heights. It could happen in an adjacent suburb to River Heights as well, I’m not picky – it just should be local.
Now, that takes away Nancy being “undercover”, but honestly that’s not a big part of the game to lose, and setting it in a town next to River Heights pretty much solves the question of why would these kids talk to her if they knew who she was (though I don’t think that’s a problem; high schoolers, especially high school senior, are pretty apathetic about other peoples’ reputations and wouldn’t really care if a small-time amateur detective well-known in her own town but not nationally was there to ask them questions).
This fixes a few things, not the least of which being how Nancy is even allowed to be there in the first place. It’s ridiculous, no matter the time period, to think that Aunt Eloise would be notified of a student’s death, turn around to the police and the principal and be like “Hey, I have a niece! She sure has found some missing dogs!” and the authorities being like “Some lost dogs? A niece? Gee whiz! You got her number handy?”.
It’s a nonsensical way to get Nancy into the game that sticks out because there were sensical ways to ensure she could investigate.
Have Eloise working in a school a town over (and having previously lived in New York, to set up STFD), encounter the murder, think of Nancy, get the River Heights police chief to put in a good word for her with the other town’s police, and you’ve got a logical process of getting Nancy involved.
Make SCK Nancy’s first big case outside of River Heights (even if it’s just by a handful of miles) working with a different police force/school/etc., and suddenly there’s a justification for starting with this case.
The other big change I’d make is in the whole premise of the game.
Nancy Drew doesn’t tackle another murder until DED, and honestly it’s a good thing they waited for a good concept and a competent writer, because the one thing that stands out in the game is the premise: a person is murdered, and no one cares.
It’s one thing to have some of the characters not care, or be actively hostile to Jake Rogers while he’s alive, etc. etc. After he’s dead, no one’s shaken; sure, Jake has been blackmailing all of them, but the characters either intensely don’t care, or (in the case of Hulk, for example) are glad he’s dead, and have no qualms about telling you so.
Outside of your suspect pool, no one cares either; the most the teachers say is a line in an email noting that they’ll have to replace him for bulletin board duties. A student is murdered — a student that these teachers all knew, as he worked administratively for the bulletins at least — and they don’t care. Heck, Nancy doesn’t even care — she’s just there to poke her nose in and say some horrifically cheesy lines.
And honestly? I’m not okay with it.
Jake Rogers wasn’t a people person, and he was a jerk. His dream was to get enough money to go to an island and live a life of solitary luxury. He blackmailed people who broke the law (Connie is the weakest link here, but technically competing in the competition is Fraud because of the monetary prize, even if I don’t condemn her for it) for his own gain, but he was the definition of a temporary problem.
And an adult saw this kid as a temporary problem and used a permanent solution to fix it.
There’s the great episode in the first season of The Mentalist, 1X14 “Crimson Casanova”, where a woman having an affair in a hotel with a pick-up artist is shot to death.
At the end of the episode, it’s revealed that this woman, who cheated on and stole from her husband, was not the target at all — that a hotel employee who was in love with the pick-up artist’s ex-girlfriend tried to kill the pick-up artist in revenge for his treatment of the ex-girlfriend.
The following dialogue takes place between Patrick Jane (the titular Mentalist) and the murderer:
Murderer: “I’m not sorry. He’s dirt. The way he carried on with those other women, rubbing Katie’s nose in it? …I wish I hadkilled him.”
Jane: “But you killed Claire Wolcott instead.”
M: “I never meant to do that…but she shouldn’t have been doing what she was doing, should she? I mean, it’s not like anybody cares. Her husband was going —”
J: “I care! I care about Claire Wolcott! She was a living person!...You took her life!”
When his detective partner tries to calm him down, Jane responds with a simple statement:
J: “I…I just…I think he should be sorry.”
And that’s how I feel about Jake Rogers’ death.
Sure, he was a blackmailer. He, too, shouldn’t have been doing what he was doing. But he’s also a senior in high school involved in, let’s face it, petty crimes at most. He was a living person.
I don’t expect the murderer to be sorry, like in the above example. But a kid was alive, and now he’s dead, because someone murdered him in cold blood.
And I think someone should be sorry.
So how would I fix SCK?
Set it in or near River Heights, flesh out the characters, acknowledge the wrong that all of them do.
Make the culprit an actual part of the case.
Have actual puzzles in the game.
Acknowledge how terrible it is that Jake Rogers was murdered and that no one seems to care.
Have someone on his side, even if it’s only Nancy — Nancy, who shares so many similarities with Jake, who spies on those around her, who gathers evidence of their wrongdoings and, yes, holds it over their heads to get them to tell her what she wants to know.
Give Nancy sympathy for Jake, wanting justice for Jake, and you’ve won half the battle.

Keeping up with my Yankees centric MLB preview, I wanted to continue onward and take a long look at the trade market the Yankees may be waddling into. Over the past two seasons, the Yankees have done most of their damage via trades both as it pertains to shedding unwanted salary, clearing 40 man space (Caleb Smith and Garrett Cooper to Michael King) and making big fish splash trades like Giancarlo Stanton and James Paxton. The Yankees have opted to make deals in large part because it's cheaper but also because they are just flat out good at it. So good in fact that it was reported toward the trade deadline that teams were absolutely going to get Brian Cashman to overpay because they didn't want to be the latest team to give up something for nothing. So if Brian Cashman opts to upgrade through trades, here are some names to keep in mind as we go through the late fall/early winter*
*As an aside, no Syndergaard, no DeGrom, no Bauer, no Kluber and no Lindor. For starters, I just don't see those deals as being remotely possible so I'm not going to waste keystrokes. Beyond that? I mean WE also all know WHY those deals make sense for the Yankees would be a barrel of fun so why waste time? They'd be amazing additions to any team let alone this one.
1. SP Robbie Ray, Arizona Diamondbacks 12-8 4.34 ERA 174 innings pitched 12.13 K/9 4.34 BB/9 98 ERA-
In a very chippy and controversial post season presser, Brian Cashman stated plainly that the people they were aiming at the deadline ultimately didn't get traded. We know for a fact that one of the guys that the Yankees chased up until the deadline was Diamondbacks arm Robbie Ray. According to Jon Heyman and other NY media members, the trade fell short when the Diamondbacks asked for a FOUR player package headlined by Clint Frazier. My guess is that the Yankees and Diamondbacks are going to circle back around to one another and the winter meetings will be ripe with Ray to the Yankees rumors. Robbie Ray is not the answer if you're chasing down a stud ace starter. He's a less talent but still quite good version of James Paxton. Let's discuss the positives; Robbie Ray is a strikeout machine who was somewhat fluked by the juiced ball in 2019. His xFIP is a full point lower than his actual ERA which suggests some flukiness. He was third in the MLB in K's per 9 innings and at 234 strikeouts, would easily give the Yankees a power lefty arm they yearn for. He's under contract until 2021 and is still on the right side of 30 which matters because Severino could be the only starter on the rotation now who is around beyond next year. The downside is that giving up assets for a guy who doesn't solve your desire/hunger for a #1 starter isn't normally wise business. Severino, Tanaka, Paxton and Robbie Ray is a really good top 4 in your rotation but it's not the sort of rotation you can trumpet out vs Houston's or even on the same level as Cleveland's top 3 of Klueber, Corrasco and Bieber. Ray also has crazy walk totals and like most power pitches he tends to give up flyball contact at a relatively spooky rate. Also could dude shave his beard in time before pitchers and catches report? That shit looks like it'll take a while.
2. SP Matt Boyd, Detroit Tigers 9-12 4.56 ERA 185.1 innings pitched 11.56 K/9 2.43 BB/9 98 ERA-
Sticking with the names and faces we know of that didn't get dealt, Matthew Boyd! The Yankees apparently checked in on Boyd a few times and Detroit figured the best way to start negotiations was with Gleyber Torres. Because idiocy exists in Michigan seemingly. To his credit, Boyd decided to "reward" the Tigers down the stretch for their view on him with a 5.55 ERA and a .505 slugging percentage against. With elevated walk rates and elevated contact overall, Boyd was pretty terrible in the 2nd half. The good news is that he throws for power, is under 30, has crazy K rates and is under contract into 2023. He is worth a lot if you buy into the upside but worth a whole lot less if you take in the totality of the circumstances. he was slightly better away from Detroit and the fact that he pitched to softer contact on the road might have some pitching coach figuring it's just a desire to get out of a dead situation. It would also be fair to note that every team trading for a Tigers pitcher is going to remember how they jerked around teams on Michael Fulmer only for him to completely fall apart. Matthew Boyd is the ultimate gamble; ridiculous stuff, amazing K rate, good walk rate and a penchant for loud hits with a terrible second half to send him. My guess is Detroit would probably like to hold onto him until the trade deadline and then reconsider things.
3. RP Ken Giles, Toronto Blue Jays 1.87 ERA 23 saves 53 innings pitched 14 K/9 2.41 BB 41 ERA- 1 flat WHIP
The final name on our Trade Deadline targets from July. Apparently of the three names above, the Yankees were closest on Ken Giles as an added bullpen arm before something in the medicals spooked them. Giles had a great year in Toronto and was a quality-ish arm for Houston before falling off the map and losing his confidence, eventually getting swapped out for maligned Roberto Osuna. If Chapman opts out, it's worth noting that Giles is probably going to do around 8 to 10 mil or so through arbitration which would put him below Britton and Ottavino in  the financial totem pole. The guy who runs Toronto also was in Cleveland when they drafted Clint Frazier so clearly they have a comfort there on their end. Britton can close and Giles can be your 8th inning guy.
4. SS Nick Ahmed, Arizona Diamondbacks .254/.316/.437 19 HR 82 RBI 79 runs scored 93 OPS+ 92 wRC+
The general thought process is that if Didi leaves, the Yankees will just shift Gleyber Torres to shortstop full time, put DJ at 2B and have Gio and Voit round out the infield. In that case they probably will want somebody who can rotate around at a variety of spots in the infield to keep everybody fresh aka the same role they had in mind for DJ LeMehieu when they signed him. If they want a more traditional shortstop and use DJ/Gleyber/Gio as a trio of rotating infielders (or play DJ at 1st) then Nick Ahmed might make a lot of sense as a trade option. Going back to names from the past, the Yankees have inquired on Ahmed in the past; once as a potential 2B (the role went to Neil Walker) and once as a fill in for Didi when he had TJS. Ahmed had his career best year which is still noway near Didi's peak years BUT his glove is world's away better than Didi's peak years so that's the trade off.
5. 1B Daniel Vogelbach, Seattle Mariners .208/.341/.439 30 HR 76 RBI 79 runs scored 112 OPS+ 111 wRC+
The original plan in 2019 was a Greg Bird/Luke Voit platoon gig at 1st and DH. It didn't work out that and to his credit, Voit took the job and ran with it for the first half of the year. In the 2nd half, injuries and a lack of confidence in his ability to read the zone led to Voit being off the playoff roster. He's got all of the tools to be a really good hitting 1st baseman (less about the defense said then the better) but Voit remains a "Yeah but" for the Yankees. He's too good on paper to not make the team but too question marked filled at this point to be a reliable set it and forget it starter at 1st. Daniel Vogelbach falls into a similar boat as Luke Voit; both see a lot of pitches, both hit for power, both are cost controlled and both struggled in the 2nd half down the stretch. Vogelbach isn't great shakes defensively which would give the Yankees a sketchy lefty-righty platoon with bad defense but the pop and the OBP skills are tremendous and well worth considering if Vogelbach is not considered a key part of the Mariners rebuild. The argument could/should be made that the Yankees already have a Daniel Vogelbach in waiting in Mike Ford though.
6. SP Jose Quintana, Cubs 13-9 4.56 ERA 181 innings pitched 8.0 K/9 2.4 BB/9 107 ERA-
Went over this one elsewhere. For a Yankees staff that really could use the innings, Jose Quintana would provide a reliable somewhat affordable (at 11 mil) innings eater with upside. His stuff was basically the same as usual (he K'd a bit less than usual) and figures to have some bounceback ability especially if the balls are untreated this year.
7. DH Kyle Schwarber, Cubs .250/.339/.531 38 HR 92 RBI 82 runs scored 120 OPS+ 120 wRC+
So as previously stated; if Brian Cashman wants you then chances are he'll find a way to go and get you eventually. In 2016, Cashman went toe to toe with the Cubs in an attempt to get Kyle Schwarber for Aroldis Chapman. It didn't work out and apparently they tried again for the stretch run in 2017 as well. When the Yankees lineup was being wiped out with injuries, they went out and got a DH in Edwin Encarnacion with the belief being that they could hit their way by teams with no upgrades to the rotation. It didn't quite work out in the playoffs but Encarnacion was very reliable for the Yankees last year. Could the Yankees jump on a potential Cubs soft rebuild by grabbing Schwarber and using him as an occasional outfielder but mostly full time DH who mashes lefties and provides balance at the top of the line up between the likes of Stanton, Judge and Gleyber? Schwarber is an abysmal defender who mashes and then some but cannot hit lefties for the life of it. The price would probably be high despite his warts because he's still relatively cost effective and lefty power is always in demand.
8. RP Blake Treinen, Oakland Athletics 4.91 ERA 16 saves 58.2 innings pitched 9.1 K/9 5.6 BB/9
If the Yankees have to go and find some additional bullpen arms, they might find a friend out in Oakland. Blake Treinen was superb in 2018 and despite having similar peripherals for most of 2019, the results were way worse. EVEN accounting for regression to the mean, this was a hell of a decline for Treinen who ended the year on IL. At 31 years old and likely at an elevated (by bullpen standards) cost, the Yankees could take a low risk high reward flier on Treinen.

Notice the underlined character on menu names. The image above shows the menu bar and two toolbars. File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, Tools, Table and Help are the menu by default. You could click on the menu to pull down different options available and click on any command to issue. MS Word 2003 contained a set of pull down menu at the top just below the title bar. MS Word 2010 Screen Menu Bar and Tool Bars So, it is better to keep an eye on both of these versions. Word 20 are already much popular and is going to be included in syllabus very soon. This is because many exam boards such as Public Service Commission has not left Word 2003 for questions yet. I will be referring to Word 2003 and Word 2007 or 2010. Screen Elements of MS WordĪs we’ve just talked, MS Word evolved in different versions and in each version it was more refined and improved with new features.

Please click here to go to Wikipedia if you are interested to get complete version information of Word for DOS, Windows, Mac OS, OS/2 and Atari St. Included in Office 2007 released to businesses on November 30, 2006, released worldwide to consumers on January 30, 2007 Only sold as part of Office 97 Powered By Word 98, which was only available in Japan and Korea.

Similarly, you can find the collection of splash screens and icons of MS Word over the years on that page.īelow is the complete version history as presented by Wikipedia: Year ReleasedĬode-named T3 (renumbered 6 to bring Windows version numbering in line with that of DOS version, Macintosh version and also WordPerfect, the main competing word processor at the time also a 32-bit version for Windows NT only) Click here to see how the screen of MS Word used to look like. MS Word interface as well as features are greatly improved over these different versions. For my money, it’s a generally more pleasant experience than Word 2007. Word 2010 makes lots of tiny refinements to the user interface. Word 2010 builds on Word 2007, fixes a lot of bugs, and introduces a few new features. Word 2007 gave us the biggest change in the user interface since the invention of the toolbar and the mouse. Word 2003 fixed many of those problems and again became a much-used, reliable version. Word 2000 consolidated on that change and Word 2000 was reliable, solid and widely used. More recently, it seems that Microsoft is a superstitious: it skipped from 12 (Word 2007) to 14 (Word 2010). There were early numbering inconsistencies (versions 1, 2 and then 6 in the 1980s and 1990s). MS Word reached up to version 14 but not that there have been 14 versions. It was first released upon an unsuspecting public on 25 October 1983. The current versions are Microsoft Office Word 2010 for Windows and Microsoft Office Word 2011 for Mac.

It is a component of the Microsoft Office software system it is also sold as a standalone product and included in Microsoft Works Suite. Subsequent versions were later written for several other platforms including IBM PCs running DOS, the Apple Macintosh, the AT&T Unix PC, Atari ST, SCO UNIX, OS/2, and Microsoft Windows. Microsoft Word was first released in 1983 under the name Multi-Tool Word for Xenix systems. Documents can be created, saved, and edited at the desire of the creator from a blank document or via one of the many Wizards included with Word. Microsoft Word is a proprietary word processor designed by Microsoft that can be used to create various types of documents from letters and memos to calendars and lists.

How to maintain the screw air compressor box?
The screw air compressor adopts high-capacity compression components, and its rotor has a low outer circle speed and achieves optimal oil injection, achieving high efficiency and high reliability. Maintenance of screw compressor chassis is very important. The advantages of the screw air compressors and the maintenance method of screw air compressors box are explained below.
Advantages of screw air compressors
Screw air compressors are pre-configured screw air compressors that only require a single power connection and compressed air connection, and have a built-in cooling system, which greatly simplifies the installation work. The latest design ensures extremely low system and compressed air temperatures. Guarantees optimum cooling and maximum service life for all components.
1. The screw air compressor has the advantages of high stability, high efficiency, low vibration and low noise.
2. The yin and yang rotors and the coordination between the rotor and the casing are set, so that the backflow of the gas leaks less and the efficiency is high.
3. The injected lubricating oil has the functions of sealing, cooling, noise reduction and lubrication
4. Compared with the piston machine, it has fewer wearing parts and lower failure rate.
5. The screw compression working curve is smooth, with less vibration and low noise compared with the piston machine.
6. The cooling method is generally divided into: water cooling and air cooling.
7. Cooling system: High-quality materials are used to ensure that the cooler can withstand pressure, has high heat dissipation efficiency and good corrosion resistance.
8. Air filter: heavy-duty, multi-stage air inlet filter, dust removal accuracy 1um (98% is filtered out), large working surface and relatively long service life.
9. Oil/gas separator: The new generation of separator adopts a new filter material, with higher efficiency, and the air oil content is less than 2ppm.
10. Intelligent controller: All operations and related data of the air compressor operation are displayed on the control panel, which can be controlled between your fingers, easy, convenient and accurate.
Air Compressor Equipment — Screw air compressors drive the compression components at the optimum speed for the application through an efficient drive system. Completely maintenance-free during normal operation.

Maintenance method of screw air compressors box
Many users tend to ignore the maintenance of the screw air compressor box when maintaining the compressor. The following will tell you the maintenance method of the screw air compressor box.
1. First, stop the compressor first, let it stop, wait for it to cool down completely, and release the pressure completely before starting the inspection;
2. Then open the chassis to check whether the balance pin is firm.
3. Check whether the bolts are loose.
4. Check the surface finish of internal parts for wear.
5. Use a flashlight to light the rotating part and see that the gap is uniform when wear occurs; then inside the chassis, the outer cover can be repaired to see if there are cracks, which need to be tested and inspected if necessary.
6. Use a wrench to move the connecting rod parts between the balance irons to see if these parts are loose or eccentric.
The above is the maintenance method of the screw air compressor box. The maintenance of the screw air compressor is very important, don’t forget to maintain the screw compressor shell.
