do you know what my driver's ed course was? "don't drink and drive, the gas is on the right, use your signal when you turn, and don't drink and drive. here is your learner's permit, if you go a few months without fucking up you will get a full license. please do not drink and drive."

which is insane to me, because as an 18 year old i probably should not have been given clearance to drive a several tonne death machine??

anyways I'm saying this because I've been driving for nearly a decade now, and dear god. there's a lot of people who just should not be on the road. i understand that this is a car-based country and we do not actually fucking have public transportation. but like. if you are operating a several tonne death machine you should ideally know how to do so in a way that does not make other people fear for their lives. If I am sitting and waiting to turn, I should not be in danger of nearly having the front of my car taken off because YOU decided that driving on the right side of the road was for squares, actually.

Well, there are probably worse places to start than Miranda's tail.

It's not the kind of shape that's easy to pick up — tall but flat, the only good place to hold onto it starts at the bottom and top, and while it's easy enough to wrap the hand around the plane of it, it also has no other features or divots for a long while to provide grip. The weight of it, all muscle and scale and dense bone, would have to sit against the meat of the palm or dig into the joints of the finger, but it's also all pushing down on only that part of the hand. This makes it harder to deal with than if all of that weight was spread out, each part of the hand able to take a portion, instead of all bracing down against the nerves of the palm and pinching them without anywhere else to distribute said weight besides the edge.

A choice, likewise, has to be made in how to hold it. Both hands on the underside means that the top portion is likely to block the view, and that makes it easier to tip over, out of the hands and out of the precarious grip anyone would be forced to have upon it. One hand on the underside and the top makes it easier, if more awkward, and with less of a risk of obstructing the view, but that makes it easier to slip out the other way, and that also directly presses the keel of Miranda's tail against the chest.

The keel, which juts out too far up to be reached by the hand, but at too shallow of an angle to hold onto at all without the hand slipping, and has a pointed ridge along the furthest side of it. The point of it was to make it easier to move the tail from side to side, providing a point so that the paddle itself isn't too energy-costly to move, like the ridge on the side of shark's tails. Which was a fine thing underwater, but it works just as well on flesh as it does the sea, and there's no good way to hold it without the keel jabbing awkwardly into the body, like the end of the tail too.

None of this is sized very well to be held, really. Miranda's tail alone would be the height of someone else's distance to their hips from the ground, and it's just enough to make it impossible to swing an arm around without losing grip regardless. A larger size means more weight too, and without any organs to take up space, all there is is the denser, heavier materials of Miranda's body, all tucked up into one.

Her spine isn't helping either. Miranda's tail is a significant portion of the length of her body, and it's deceptively rigid for what it is, making bending or curving or working with it harder than it looks. It can also only bend to the sides, and with Miranda laying there, looking up at Ava with an expression that, at kindest, would be described as "pitying," it's a bit like picking up a metal door attached long-ways to a boulder.

"Are you enjoying yourself?" Miranda asks, one hand crooked under her chin as she just stares at Ava, watching with half-lidded eyes. There's nothing more to say, really.

i think its kinda funny that ibis paint is regarded as the Broke Artist App or whatever (as opposed to more mainstream programs like csp or procreate) because its free and because of how popular it is with phone + finger artists while im jusg sitting here having used ibis for a cool eight years on purpose.
