Taking apart the new Outlast trailer & what we know

Thank God for Red Barrels and the fear they have caused me over the past few years. More than once I screamed in the dark, clutching my controller so hard my knuckles turned white. Outlast, Whistleblower and 2 have been the cause of so many nightmares - and I loved it. That’s why I am trying to analyse the latest teasers as good as possible, including my personal headcanons and so much more. I will take a lot of information off the Outlast Wiki, in case you want to check documents. Headcanons will be written in bold, official information in cursive.

What we know so far

Set in the era of the Cold War, human guinea pigs are involuntarily recruited by the good folks at the Murkoff Corporation to test advanced methods of brainwashing and mind control. In a world of distrust, fear, and violence, your morals will be challenged, your endurance tested, and your sanity crushed. The game is going to be set in the Cold War time, which had its peak in the 60s with the race to the moon. And you know who was also active during the Cold War? The first experiments surrounding the Walrider in Mount Massive. According to the Wiki, Mount Massive was opened up in 1967 and shut down in 1971 due to a problem with an unknown patient who had killed three scientists.

This is where my first headcanon comes in:

In the trailer, we see three scientists working on our character. Maybe our character is the reason why Mount Massive was shut down, killing the scientists from the trailer. 

What was going on in Outlast Trials, according to the information we have, is the project MKUltra. Project MKUltra was a program created by the Central Intelligence Agency for the purpose of researching and developing drugs and procedures for interrogation and mind control. Several of these procedures have been deemed illegal, particularly the ones that experimented on subjects without their knowledge or consent. In Outlast's universe, a branch of the program was established in the 50s and operated at the Mount Massive Asylum until its closure in the 70s and is also the focus point behind The Outlast Trials.

Which confirms the fact that Outlast Trials will be set in Mount Massive - if it revolves around MKUltra! Of course, there could be a lot of other problems and experiments happening in Outlast Trials, but since this one is established in canon, working on it would be a great option for Red Barrels to expand the lore and bring players back to Mount Massive.

Since it is pretty much canon that we will return to Mount Massive - what will we witness there?

The first “variant” has been confirmed by the trailers already - a tall man with ripped pants carrying around a hammer, which he later smashes us with. Nice.

But if we take a closer look at him…

Check out his head, his left arm and left leg. The device on his head looks similar to the device our character gets drilled into their head in the trailer. What’s on his left arm and leg could be a kind of ripped physical restraint. He is also extremely tall and skinny - my headcanon is, that he is a variant who had been starved and tortured by the staff at Mount Massive. The torture could have changed his physical appearance (becoming taller), which can also lead to terrible growth pain, another way of pain to make him go crazy. I am pretty sure this guy right here went mad because of the horror he had to undergo due to Project MKUltra and now is out for blood - I see similarities to Chris Walker here. He will play a big part in the game and the fear we are going to experience.

And now to our friend…

If you have seen one of my previous posts, you will know that I noticed our female alley having two different kind of death animations in the trailers. Why?

Another thing to point out - what is this thing on her chest?

At first I thought this was some suicide bomber thing, but that wouldn’t make sense at all. Is it some kind of battery for the night vision goggles? Is it similar to an electrocardiography to collect data? Heartbeat, saturation of oxygen in the lungs… everything would be useful for scientists. Note the black box on the left side - could be a big battery to keep the device running for a long time. Do we have to change batteries...

My headcanon here is that she is one of the playable characters - but one of the characters which is controlled in coop. That’s why she is friendly towards the character, but can die anyways.

All in all, the two trailers got me very excited for the game! I have high expectation for Red Barrels, and I am sure they will outdo themselves with blood, gore and horror. I cannot wait for 2021 and the horrors we can experience alone and in coop. 

Also one little thing at the end - the place from the trailers reminded me so much of the scene of Frank’s first chase, kinda made me feel homesick for Whistleblower.

Summary: It gets better, they have a plan and Loki is finally falling into his role as her soulmate, but does it last?

A/N: I just couldn’t leave it alone and we have more whump. We are picking up around 4 weeks after she has been brought to the compound.

Loki was surprised they brought him in on the discussion of Treasure and her treatment, as they referred to it. Taking a seat around the table along with Shuri, Tony, Steve, Sam, Bucky and Thor, it seemed they were taking it seriously she was Loki’s soulmate.

Appearing Shuri was going to speak, all sat attentively but Loki who was showing impatience at missing his usual time of sitting with his mate. Hopefully this wouldn’t take too long.

“There is progress,” Shuri began, a hologram of charts and graphs pulling up in the center of the table for them all to look over.

This was agitating to say the least, this meant nothing to Loki, physical evidence did. He was seeing progress, more than the charts showed, his mate was speaking more, in dreams at least. When they physically met, she remained quiet, but he could sense she was at ease and not giving up, it was heartening to say the least.

“I know it doesn’t appear to be much, but slow progress is better than none,” Shuri said, Loki noting several look worried that there wasn’t anything on the charts.

“These are just charts, diagrams,” Thor spoke up oddly enough, the golden god not having spoken much of Treasure, even when Loki spoke to him of her, but it was weighing on Thor as well. “But there is obvious signs she is doing better; she at least comes out of her room, speaks when spoken to. That seems like progress mere charts can’t show.”

“Your right, these are just charts,” Bucky spoke up, he could taste the tension rolling off of Loki.

Bucky had lost his soulmate decades back thanks to HYDRA, though he loathed the god at times, it didn’t mean he wished that sort of heartache on Loki, or anyone for that matter. The physical loss of a soulmate was excruciating, but the loss of their mental state was worse. The brunets very own soulmate having suffered in a mental hospital until eventually taking her own life due to the agony he was placed under when he was being turned into the Winter soldier.

“But it still doesn’t give insight to her true mental state,” Bucky continued, meeting Loki’s gaze. “That is what we need to focus on, there is nothing worse than psychologically losing your soulmate.”

Giving a nod, Loki had a feeling the metal armed soldier knew more about the situation then he originally let on when they first found Treasure. Truth be told, this was infuriating, looking over to Thor who was watching him out of the corner out of his eye. Loki was close to getting to his feet and leaving but fought against it as Shuri spoke to Sam.

“What have you found to help her decompress,” the teen spoke up to the falcon who looked over to Loki for a moment.

Yeah, unfortunately Sam could understand the gods hell. “It appears she does well with the diamond paintings-,” he spoke up everyone caught off guard as Loki cut him off, but it was kept calm.

“She listens to music, it appears to help while she is working on the diamond paintings,” Loki spoke stoically, feeling he should voice what he had found as well, he shared closer quarters with her than the others did he not? Even if he was in a separate room the god knew the team were not ignorant to the fact he stayed there most of the day.

Sam gave a nod, “music often helps. Is she sleeping?”

“She is,” Loki spoke up but made sure it was noted in his tone there was to be no questions of dreams. To Loki, their shared dreams were a subject between the two of them that served as a sliver all their own, were no one would watch them endlessly.

“Her dreams-,” Shuri began but Loki quickly cut her off, his resolve finally cracking.

“They are between my mate and myself alone,” Loki sneered hatefully as he got to his feet followed by Thor and several others as chairs scooted loudly and they all froze.

“Hey, take it easy we are only trying to help,” Tony snarled back at the god who glared them all down.

“You call placing her in the same environment she came from to poke and prod at her in the same manner, help? She loathes going into that lab day in and day out or whenever any of you request it. If you would simply allow me to take her to New Asgard all this would be over in mere moments instead of dragging on for weeks as you have been doing,” Loki spat, not moving a muscle, the air becoming charged with seidr.

“Well I don’t see you doing any better to help the cause,” Tony snarled back, “withholding information-.”

“She is my mate! It is my duty to keep her secrets! Which means, what she and I discuss in private is not meant for anyone’s ears but our own! She trusts me to keep her safe, and I will not fail her a second time,” Loki snarled back, grabbing for Tony but Thor was quick to catch him.

“This is enough,” the golden god bellowed, his voice so loud it made everyone’s ears ring for a moment. “Are we not going to discuss what we were brought here to or not?”

Loki pulled away from Thor, eyeing his brother and the dawning realization this wasn’t a discussion to go over charts. “Thor,” Loki croaked, “what are you not telling me?”

“We are sending her to Wakanda,” Steve spoke, the gods attention turning to the captain who had stepped closer. “Shuri should be able to get this done quickly, a week at the most-.”

“Then if you are allowing her to take my mate to Wakanda then it should be no different to allow the healers of Asgard the same opportunity,” Loki stated, swallowing hard to wet his suddenly parched throat.

A motion from Bucky got the gods attention before the metal armed solider stated his peace as well. “We know, but Shuri has already began the process. The same that helped me. It can cause damage in itself if it isn’t completed.”

Shuri met Loki’s gaze, seen the despair. “We have a place set up for both of you,” Shuri began to reassure before pausing for a moment. “Allow me to finish and if it doesn’t work, then as soon as I am done you take her wherever. All I ask is let me finish what I started.”

Taking in a deep breath, Loki didn’t want to cause Treasure more harm. He resented them all, but his care, no, this was love, his love for his mate had him swallowing his pride. “When do we leave?”

It felt as if the room sighed when Loki asked his question. The team relaxing along with it as Shuri gave a faint smile.

“In the morning. I was going to wait, but you know as well as I do that she stopped making progress the past few days. There will be a jet waiting for us at 6 am. I won’t take her to the lab right away but will allow her to rest and become familiar with the city,” Shuri confirmed.

Pressing his lips in a thin line, Loki had heard all he needed, giving a nod before leaving in a wisp of seidr this time instead of a slamming door.

“What the hell was that,” Tony snarled at Thor, stepping up to the god who only glared at the billionaire.

“You know as well as any Treasure’s mood is directly affecting him,” Thor growled back.

“You were supposed to talk to him before hand,” Tony snipped as Steve and several others came around to speak as well.

“Hey, chill out,” Natasha snapped at Tony. “You didn’t talk to Loki?”

“No, it was all I could do to catch him away from her, but he is trying in his own way to help,” Thor spoke up as he looked to them all. “I didn’t have the heart to tell him he was losing her once more.”

Loki didn’t like the idea of his mate being taken to Shuri’s home to undergo more poking and prodding when New Asgard was just as capable without all the invasive test. Though it appeared it was decided before he had ever voiced his opinion.

In his mind, the god knew it wasn’t that simple, not with her. The trauma he sensed she had faced, witnessed in her nightmares was possibly worse if not more so than his own due to it beginning the very moment she was born.

Sure to enter her room via the door, Loki was sure to slip in quietly. Treasure would know it was him, but he didn’t find her hunkered over the art table or in the kitchen where it appeared she focused on cooking as well. The past week had found Treasure stepping up to him when he entered in a sort of greeting where she looked him over before giving the faintest smile.

Though it seemed she was in the shower, hearing the water running and deciding to busy himself by looking over the numerous diamond canvases she had finished. The large art table he provided was littered in small containers of plastic diamonds that accompanied the large sticky canvases.

Over the past few weeks this had been the therapy Sam had come to the conclusion would be helpful for her. Apparently the falcon was known for helping ones with trauma similar to hers.

It appeared the numerous paintings she had already completed were placed on the small kitchenette table she had drug next to the art table. The one she was currently working on appeared to be one she was making up as she went along, the canvas itself blank but from what he seen it looked to be a garden. Realization dawning it was his mother’s garden.

There was music playing softly as he looked over the artwork on the dining table, shuffling it around to note they all appeared gardens, and all the ones he had brought her were done as well. It seemed she was favoring this to sleeping the past several days.

Looking to the open bathroom door, he heard the pattern of water change as she moved in the stall. It terrified him that he may be losing her once more to an unseen force he couldn’t combat. They had made progress, the both of them, but she was far more troubled than he first realized and wondered if his own torment had anything to do with it.

A since of guilt hung over Loki as he stepped towards the bathroom, the water shutting off as he did so, but he had to assure she was OK.

The hot water did little to clear her crowded mind. Sam had spoken with her, Bucky as well, explaining there would be days like this where no matter what it was just hard. Treasure had opted for a shower but to what end she wasn’t sure as she almost collapsed in exhaustion when she stepped out. 

She had been up for several weeks with HYDRA compared to the three she had been going nonstop, but this was a different kind of exhaustion. Drying off, she tugged on the leggings and cami before starting into the bedroom. So addled she didn’t realize it was time for Loki to make his visit and all but jumped out of her skin when she bumped into the god as she exited. 

“What’s wrong mate,” Loki began, sure to not touch her but was quick to steady her with minimal touch as her steps faltered. 

Meeting his gaze, she didn’t know how to tell him what was wrong. This time she didn’t draw away from his touch, but muscles still flinched under the light caress. Treasure didn’t feel like she had the past few weeks, steps faltering once more with Loki assuring she was seated on the bed before taking one next to her, sure to give her space.

“I don’t know,” her voiced cracked, nervousness in her tone, she felt addled and had no idea what to do. 

“Mate-,” Loki began, preparing to tell her of the move but had a feeling it may make it worse. 

Taking in a deep breath to steady his own unease, he knew he needed to tell her, but also knew she needed rest. “You should rest love. I will stay, so you are not alone,” he spoke quietly, reaching for the fur he had gifted and placed it over her legs. 

She knew there was more to what he was saying but it appeared it was a thing that could wait. Treasure didn’t know how to tell Loki she needed to leave. There was an itch under her skin that felt as if she stayed cooped up much longer she would go mad but wasn’t sure the admittance would help. 

For once he may be right. Nodding drunkenly, she pulled her body against the pillows as the god made sure she was covered. Eyeing Loki as she done so, the god got to his feet to take a seat in the armchair next to the bed, pulling the book kept between the cushions into his hands.

Slowly heavy lids began to flutter closed, watching Loki until they finally shut in exhaustion. Watching close, Loki felt his own body ease as hers relaxed further into the mattress, her true name echoing in the gods ears as he felt his own self slipping into a restful sleep. 

His soulmates name spoken once more but from her lips as she took a seat next to Loki on the bench nestled in his mother’s garden, on Asgard. This place no longer existed but in dreams. Looking over to his soulmate as she sat gently, clothed in an Asgardian pants suit matching his colors perfectly. Loki should know even in dreams she would refuse to wear a dress and it made him smile. 

“The name suits you love,” Loki spoke with a smile as she returned the sentiment.

“Does it,” she hummed, inching close so she was all but buried in his side.

“This is the painting you are working on,” Loki spoke up as he focused on her, there were two sides of his mate. This one was spunky, as a young warrior should be, but the other was a hardened shell, making the god wonder if HYDRA had split her very soul in two.

“It is,” she smiled as he turned to face her. Reaching out to take her left hand in his, she smiled as he turned it to make the ring of snakes and emeralds glitter. 

“This one no longer exist does it,” she asked innocently, Loki reaching a freehand out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. 

“No. It was-.”

“Sigyn’s.”

“Yes. I believe you should have one of your own love,” he smiled, both looking down at the hand for a wolf to knot around the finger and glitter with more emeralds. Caressing over her cheek with the same hand that had tucked the stray strand behind her ear, Loki smiled as she leaned into it. 

“Where is your other half,” he asked, sometimes he could reach the shell as he called the cold being, through dreams, and tonight he felt he needed to try.

“Siberia. Lost in the wilderness.”

“Can I reach her?” 

“You need to, she doesn’t need to be alone,” his spunky mate spoke with a sad smile.

As he stood, the calm garden faded along with the bright half to reveal a windswept wooded area. It appeared to be spring, but snow was blowing around as he turned to find the cold one eyeing him in shock. 

How did he enter her dream like this? Nervously she stepped back, not sure how to proceed, how to tell him she wanted to be alone tonight.  

Calling her true name, she shifted apprehensively, the mere mention of it set off a flood of memories that made no sense at the moment. Everything and nothing flashing in front of her mind’s eye, a lull in time as she looked to Loki, her soulmate, as if seeing him for the first time.  

Venturing towards the god, she felt different to say the least now that he voiced her name out loud. Hearing it flow off the gods tongue made it sound divine in this hellish waste. Nodding in acknowledgment, she studied Loki as he dared a step closer.

A harsh idea flitting over her thoughts had the snow picking up, and a coldness take over her body. This was an odd development, the gods breath smoking from his lips as he approached and the temperature around them dropped noticeably.  

“You know I won’t hurt you,” he spoke, gaze flicking to her left hand when she moved it to take the hand he offered, the ring having caught her eye. 

Looking back to him, her skin visibly paled white, almost blue as it grew colder before it appeared she calmed, the snow slowed, and she took on her original appearance. This made him realize she was more than a soldier like Bucky. 

“Can you,” he hinted to the cold, holding her gaze. 

Looking him over she didn’t give an answer either way but placed her hand back at her side and stepped back. 

“A little bit, but it's only at odd times. I haven’t been able to do so in a while,” her voice rasped, she looked prepared for a fight. 

“It’s a unique talent,” he began, lifting a hand for the blowing snow to circle them in a beautiful flurry that made her smile.  

“You’re not as nice,” she said, staying put while Loki stepped flush, furrowing his brow at the odd statement. “Out there as you are in here,” she finished, watching realization dawn on the god. 

“Reality hasn’t been kind to either of us, I think you would agree,” Loki spoke, moving to caress over her cheek and watching angry marks rise across the soft skin as if he had struck her, but fade away slowly. “It pains you still; to be touched.”

Looking him over she nodded in agreement with the statement. 

“Touch can be terribly painful,” Loki continued, shifting his weight to note her place a foot back but didn’t pull away. “But; touch can be quite pleasing if it is meant to comfort.”

Holding her gaze, Loki ventured to caress over her cheek once more, this time, tired eyes fluttered shut as a trail of pale blue followed in its wake. This gave him hope as he brought up his other hand to cup cool, soft cheeks gently.

Carefully he watched for the flesh to turn red, but thankfully it remained unfazed as he caressed over her cheeks with his thumbs, or that was until she opened her eyes in terror and she immediately stepped back. The skin looking scalded before it healed. 

Intently she studied his face, looking him over closely before bravely stepping forward, a hand held as if she was about to touch him but stopped. The god noted the sky turn black and her eyes squeezed shut. In moments it cleared to leave her a child, who appeared 12, standing before him. 

The innocence in her eyes made Loki realize she was dredging up old memories, ones taken from her as the child. Reaching a hand to his, it prompted Loki to look down as he took the smaller one in his and noted he appeared younger as well. Loki kneeled before her with a smile on his face, one she appeared happy to return. 

“I know this isn’t us now, that we can never regain what we lost but this gives me comfort,” she admitted, Loki nodding in understanding and keeping her gaze. 

“You’re right little one. When innocence is lost, there is no getting it back,” he sighed watching her close. “I must tell you something.”

“What is it,” she asked innocently, studying him as his brows furrowed.

“You and I are leaving for Wakanda in the morning,” he tried to sound casual, but the look of acceptance told him she wasn’t really surprised.

“More test,” his young mate whispered, voice cracking slightly as she looked to their clasped hands.

“I'm afraid so pet,” he murmured, placing his other over top of hers.

How? How did she tell him without screaming her throat raw she couldn’t take any more tests, prodding, questions. She was free of HYDRA, that was supposed to mean no more, no more, no more! Isn’t that what they had all told her? She wanted to force the words out, but it only came out in a hoarse whisper.

“I don’t want to sit through more test, more prodding,” she croaked, keeping the younger Loki’s gaze with tear rimmed eyes.

“I know, but-,” Loki began, though he honestly couldn’t come up with an explanation, a lie, to soothe her.

Falling to his knees, Loki reached to caress her cheek, heart fluttering as she leaned into the calloused palm. Surely the healers could take care of whatever Shuri had started, there was no need in any of this, any of her suffering.

Letting out a huff as he kept her gaze, he was at a loss, silver tongue silenced at the sight of his nervous mate. Slowly she returned to how he knew her now as did he, catching her as she collapsed to her knees and fell into his chest.

“Forgive me lover. I am as lost as you,” Loki huffed, petting along her shivering spine.

“I know,” she sniffed as if crying but when he lifted her chin to meet his gaze he seen she had not a tear in her eye. “It appears we have to make our path together.”

“Appears so love. But I need you to rest for me. Yeah,” he spoke soothingly, rubbing along her spine as she settled into his body, wrapping arms around him as he slowly woke.

Looking over to his mate, Loki got to his feet and stepped to the bed, noting the room was extremely cold. Lacing his fingers into her hair, the god realized she was drawing from his seidr, it was rare but possible.

Letting out a sigh, she was on the verge of waking before lithe fingers massaged over her scalp. Settling more into the pillows, a sense of calm washed over her, more so as the mattress dipped before her, mind drifting, but not before making the decision to wake before morning.

Whether it was training or an internal clock, she woke long before dawn and when Loki’s arms loosened. Shifting carefully in the gods arms, she looked over his sleeping face, committing it to memory and noting he looked relaxed, younger even.

She wanted to reach out, caress his face, to possibly wake him with a kiss, a snuggle even, but she didn’t feel they were there. That would take time, and it was time she didn’t have. There was no desire to travel to Wakanda, no matter the peace they offered.

Finally free of HYDRA, she wanted to make her own choice, even if it killed her. Loki didn’t have a choice, he was trying to be a better god himself, which meant he had to adhere to stricter rules than her. Truthfully she cared less about being good, she just wanted to be left alone, and it killed her soul she couldn’t be alone with Loki.

Giving the god one last look, she gingerly scooted from his hold to get to her feet. Sliding them into the shoes by the door, she grabbed the backpack hidden in the cabinet and threw it over her shoulder. If there was one thing she knew about Loki, it was the fact he had disabled the room cameras.

Pulling the tablet from the pack while watching the god, she pressed over the screen. It had been only a few days ago she had devised a plan of how to make a blank spot in F.R.I.D.A.Ys system in order to escape.

Looking back to Loki as she placed the tablet on the counter, her chest began to ache. She knew what this was and fought it as she hurried out of the compound. Deciding on hijacking something outside of the facility to aid in her escape so it wouldn’t be easily tracked.

Waking in a cold sweat, Loki immediately felt the loss of his mate weighing heavy on his chest. Angerly he leapt from the bed, storming to the door to find the tablet. In anger he crushed it in his hold as he carried the ruined remains out into the corridor.

Storming into the docking area of the compound, Loki started for Shuri, using the broken tablet to point at her. The others there, Steve, Bucky, Tony and Thor were quick to rally towards the teen for protection and to find out what was going on.

“This is your doing,” Loki snarled at the teen as Thor and several others came forward to stop the irate god, Tony jerking the tablet from his hands.

Without hesitation the billionaire twisted his wrist for a hologram to hover over the busted tech and show the last thing it was used for. Schematics of the program she had used to disable F.R.I.D.A.Y had them all marveling at the knowledge it had taken to create the literal loophole so she could leave.

“If you hadn’t suggested taking her to Wakanda she would still be here,” Loki snarled as he forced himself to calm. “We need to find her, now!”

“OK, but you have to stay here,” Steve spoke up.

“I will not,” he snipped beginning to start out of the docking area.

“Loki,” Thor bellowed, making his brother pause. “The agreement with their authorities, if you leave without proper clearance, you forfeit her freedom as well.”

“I knew it! I knew you would find a way to leverage us against one another! To think I was fool enough to trust you,” Loki snarled advancing on Thor.

“It was to protect the both of you! Don’t you dare pin this on me,” Thor snarled back, not backing down as the air charged with seidr.

“Whoa,” Tony spoke up hurrying forward as Steve and Bucky did the same in attempts to quell the fight. “OK, look, we will start tracking her now, and Barnes and Rogers will bring her back.”

“It should be me! As it was to be all along,” Loki snarled at the billionaire.

“Let me finish,” Tony bellowed himself making them all pause. “In the meantime, I am going to assure you have all you need to leave the compound and retrieve her from them. Is that clear?”

The Genesis Project: A Concept

The original concept of the Genesis Project was created in the midst of the Second World Ward in Germany, sometime between 1942 and 1944. Initially, it was called Wiedergeburt which translates itself into Rebirth. It was a well known fact that the Nazis were searching for supremacy or their race as well as Hitler’s interest in the occult. Those two desires mixed with the right minds and persuasion – led to the first draft of the Genesis Project as it became today.

How it all started?

1960 - Robert Deaver was and will forever be, a soldier. During his younger years as a Captain, Robert discovered a secret hideout of German scientists concealed underneath a concentration camp. Inside, the first drafts of what would later become the Genesis Project were filed inside briefs, concealed within the stone walls. At first, the idea of supernatural was absolutely preposterous – but the more Robert would read regarding the goal of creating the ultimate soldier – the more he was starting to believe that the Nazis were not that farfetched after all. Taking the plans with him, Robert approached an old friend who also happened to be one of the pioneers in Genetic Manipulation. It was all early stages but if anyone could truly understand if such ploy was possible – it would be him. It was that friend of Robert that sparked the interest of a supernaturally enhanced soldier and introduced Robert to what would later become his right-hand woman: Cynthia Shaw.

The initial stage of the project was a rough bet. All Robert needed to be a proof that the supernatural existed – something that could find him what he needed to acquire the necessary funds to make the project happen. The opportunity came when during one of his missions, he found an injured woman, half-burnt due to a fire that had started on a village not too far from where he was stationed. While the woman appeared human, there were certain things about her that made Robert believe that she could be more. Her skin was as white as porcelain and seemed to heal her own injuries faster than should be even considered possible – something that happened for she begged him to let her stay close to the forest. A connection that Robert surely did not miss.

Robert Deaver did not wait for her full recovery. Knocking the woman out, he took her to Elliot Shaw’s laboratory. There were definitely signs that she was not entirely human and that was all the proof Robert needed to reach out for private investors. To grant him the funds on which he could make his dream a reality.

How does Genesis Project work?

Throughout the years, Robert Deaver with the help of Elliot Shawn managed to convince the Government that a new age was coming. That the threat of a nuclear war was real and that they needed to be prepared for it. Robert managed to acquire immunity for his actions under the false pretense that they needed to prepare for the worse while Elliot approached other brilliant minds that could facilitate the process. Ultimately, the two became an unstoppable force and it was with that alliance that they managed to acquire all the funding they required through private investors. With the necessary funding, they recruited mercenaries to do the heavy work and capture supernatural creatures – spreading their influence through the world. They had a hand in hospitals, schools even law enforcement. If any suspicious report would come – they would send their goons to capture the mark and bring it to them. After a couple of tries – Dr. Elliot Shaw alongside his team of scientists managed to synthesize the drug that would later be called GENESIS.

The Hierarchy

The Project Genesis has a strict hierarchy to make the gears work the way it should be. The director of the project and the responsibility for it all to happen is Robert Deaver. His second in command was Elliot Shaw until his untimely demise, soon to be replaced by his daughter Cynthia – who also followed her father’s footsteps. Everyone else within the Project responds to them. The Scientific Crew shares their findings with her and the military branch acts solemnly under the strict orders of the Major. The Scientific branch is lead by a Head Scientist in every lab worldwide. They report their findings to Cynthia, who then shares them with Robert.

The Scientific branch spreads into several areas as well. Genetic Manipulation, Blood Tests and Analysis, how to improve the Genesis drug so that it can be used for more than its main objective. The Scientific branch also studies the individuals captured by the Military branch. They study their DNA and seek to expand their powers through the GENESIS drug so that they can achieve maximum capacity. Once an individual reaches their peak – they can either be sent to the Military branch or disposed of since they no longer have any use.

The Military Branch is divided into several teams. Team ALPHA, BETA, DELTA, OMEGA. These four teams are the Projects elite forces and they are all composed by supernatural creatures, who in turn respond to a handler to shares any and all vital information to Robert Deaver. The members of the elite squads are all put under GENESIS, to increase their powers ( and limit their natural resistance to disobey ). While the drug acts as a power boost on most cases, it also makes the target more docile and susceptible to follow orders. But not all members of the Elite force join voluntarily.

While in some cases, life as a mercenary beats the option of being incarcerated or eliminated – some offer natural resistance to the drug and are required to be ‘re-educated’. For that sole purpose, those individuals go through the ‘WHITE ROOM’ torture chamber until their will is weak enough to be manipulated through words and resort to the GENESIS. Individuals that undergo the white room process often come out not only exponentially more powerful than before but also as completely different and subservient individuals. There are few known exceptions to the rule – but the control still resides there. Imprinted in their DNA.

Under the Elite forces, comes the contacts throughout the world. Mercenaries or even law enforcement members act as eyes and ears everywhere – gathering intelligence so that the Project Analysts and Hackers may do their job in providing all the necessary information to the Handlers – who in turn ( after clearance from Robert ) give the mission specifics to their Elite members.

What is GENESIS goal?

In a world on the verge of a nuclear war, the threat of supernatural beings grows by the second. For all legal intents and purposes – the GENESIS is allowed to capture these inhuman threats and keep them away from the human population, whether through capture or eliminating the target. At the same time, they are to explore the supernatural component of their targets so that – in the case of a nuclear war – the survival rate increases through genetic manipulation. In order to guarantee Mankind’s survival, no mean to reach this end shall be overlooked.

What is GENESIS actual agenda?

While the scientists and military work towards the specific goal for which GENESIS was created, a small branch within the project works for a highly classified goal. The genetic manipulation of supernatural beings and the infusion of their DNA within human subjects so that not only Robert can achieve the creation of a SUPER SOLDIER that would obey no one else but the ones imprinted into their DNA ( thus making them immune to corruption or betrayal ) but also prolong the life of specific members of society. In the eventuality of a nuclear war taking place – the leaders of the new world are required to be superior to the masses so that they can guarantee a proper government and powerful influence. Not all of the ones that funded for this experience will achieve their goal… but without a doubt, Robert Deaver is planning on being the number one authority in the new world to come – alongside the GENESIS Project most secure and well-kept secret: the Asset 001.

Jubei Lives AU

Since some people have shown interest, I decided to post my take on a Jubei Lives AU. At least one huge outline since I’m too lazy to write a fic out of this. The rest is under the cut because this is a long one, folks. 

Note: This goes on before MKX because I still don’t know how to play that out yet (I’m open to suggestions). So this is basically part 1. Also I have not read the MKX comics so those events aren’t mention.

Part 2

Kana barely escapes the Shirai Ryu massacre with Jubei. She eventually stumbles upon a road where she spots a young couple walking along it. Kana knows that someone is following her. Too tired & injured to defend both herself and her infant son, Kana makes the difficult decision to leave him on the roadside. She gives a tearful goodbye and also leaves a headband with the Shirai Ryu symbol with him before leaving. Jubei starts crying which attracts the couple’s attention and they take him to safety as Kana watches afar. Shortly after, Kana is found and killed by Quan-Chi.

The events of MK9 and Shinnok's invasion play out as it did in canon. 

Jubei meanwhile grows up with a good childhood and a loving family. In his teen years, his parents told him the truth of his adoption and gave him the headband with the symbol, which he kept it close to him from that point on.

By the time Jubei is a young adult, his adoptive parents have tragically died. He wants to finds his place in the world. That’s when he gets the idea to join Special Forces.

After officially joining SF he meets and befriends Cassie & Jacqui. He also became well acquainted with Johnny and Kenshi, and even got the chance to meet Raiden several times. Eventually, Takeda and Kung Jin came and Jubei and Takeda became fast friends. Over time, Takeda notices an aura surrounding Jubei that feels familiar to him. He brings this up with his dad and that’s when Kenshi confesses to feeling the same thing. They decided to wait it out for the time being until they figure it out.

Not too long later, Takeda and Jubei just finished a sparring match. Takeda drops his headband as he leaves. Jubei picks it up, but his eyes widen in shock. When Takeda notices, Jubei confesses that he has the same exact headband as Takeda’s. He shows it to Takeda to prove his claim and explains that it was the only thing left with him when his adoptive parents found him. Jubei figure it was a simple headband, but knowing its symbol was that of the Shirai Ryu made him confused. Wanting to know too, Takeda offers to help get answers.

Later that day Takeda calls Hanzo and tells him that a SF member has a headband with a Shirai Ryu symbol on it. This catches Hanzo’s interest and asks Takeda for more details. Takeda explains that the person claimed to own it for his whole life and was adopted under odd circumstances. He also reveals his name to be Jubei.

The mention of that name causes Hanzo’s body to freeze in place, letting the phone slip out of his hand. After picking it back up, Hanzo thanks Takeda and tells him he would be at SF base as soon as possible before hanging up.

Hanzo tries to convince himself that there’s no way that this Jubei is his son, who he believed to be dead for many years now. Yet some part of him wants to believe that it is his son. He had to get to the bottom of this.

Hanzo quickly heads over to SF where Takeda introduces him to Jubei. After a small introduction, Jubei shows Hanzo his headband. Hanzo tells him that he needs some time to look it over to determine his answer.

After Jubei and Takeda leaves, Hanzo asks Kenshi, Johnny, and Sonya to speak with him privately. There he explains about the possibility of Jubei being his long lost son. Johnny and Kenshi are surprised by this, but Sonya is skeptical, saying it’s probably a coincidence that they both have the same name. Hanzo shows her Jubei’s headband and explains that he made it for his son when his wife announced her pregnancy years ago. Kenshi also mentions Jubei having a similar aura to Hanzo’s. With some convincing from Johnny, along with her motherly instincts sympathizing with the situation, she agrees to help Hanzo get a DNA test done.

Sonya comes up with a ruse about receiving an anonymous tip that SF members using drugs illegally and everyone had to undergo a mandatory blood test. Once Jubei’s sample was collected, Sonya takes it, along with Hanzo’s to a separate lab for parental testing. The next several hours were an agonizing wait for Hanzo, despite assurance from Kenshi, and Johnny’s attempts to lighten the mood. Eventually, Sonya returns with the results in her hands, but with a look of complete speechlessness. Johnny goes to her side to reads the results and could only slowly utter out “holy shit…”. Kenshi taps to their minds and his face also grew with shock. Hanzo asks what's wrong, and Johnny gives him the results. Hanzo almost broke into a sobbing mess right there as he reads the test’s results.

It was a match. Jubei is his son.

Jubei is called to speak with Hanzo alone. Hanzo tells him that before the old Shirai Ryu were massacred he once had a wife and son. Before his son was born he made this headband for him to wear when he was older. Then he mentions that his son was named Jubei.

Jubei put two-and-two together and realize what Hanzo was saying. Jubei didn't believe him at first until Hanzo showed him the DNA test. Once Jubei knew Hanzo was speaking the truth he grew quiet, taking in the fact that his biological father was with him. Hanzo reaches for his face, though hesitantly. The warm gentle touch was enough to coax Jubei to hug his father. They held each other tightly as if their life depended on it and they both cried.

Sonya, Johnny, and Kenshi all watch nearby. Being Parents themselves, watching the reunion had struck cords with them. 

Word quickly gets around Special Forces, including The Kombat Kids. When they asked, Jubei confirms that Hanzo is his father which left the four in shock. After discussing with his father, and getting approval from Sonya, Jubei decides to take time off from SF to stay with Hanzo for a short time so they both can get to know each other.  

Hanzo first takes Jubei to the Lin Kuei temple and introduces him to Kuai-Liang. Jubei gets along with the Lin Kuei Grandmaster and his protege, Frost quite well. While Jubei is touring the compound with Frost, Hanzo expresses his worries to Kuai that he might not be the person he needs to be for Jubei. Kuai consoles to Hanzo that he believes whatever problems occurs both he and Jubei can solve them together. Hanzo thanks the Grandmaster for his words.

After the visit is done, Hanzo takes Jubei to the Shirai Ryu compound and introduces him to the members and they all welcome him. They both spent the whole day around the grounds until night fell when they have time to themselves. Jubei tells him about his adoptive parents, and Hanzo tells him about the old Shirai Ryu. Hanzo showed Jubei items he was able to recover from his time there. Hanzo then brings out a picture which had himself when he was younger, and Kana holding Jubei when he was a baby. Jubei asks him about his mother.

Hanzo told him that Kana was kind, beautiful, and the most wonderful woman he had ever known. She, and Jubei, were everything to him. For a time, Hanzo thought he was the luckiest man alive. Until the day came when the Shirai Ryu were massacred, including Kana and Jubei shortly after he was killed.

Hanzo tells his son that after this was resurrected by Quan-Chi, he was told that Kuai’s brother, Bi-Han was guilty and the sorcerer offered Hanzo opportunity for revenge. Hanzo became consumed by vengeance and killed Bi-Han but at the cost of the chance of possibly resurrect Kana. It wasn’t until years later after Hanzo was freed from Quan-Chi that Kuai-Liang showed him the truth that the sorcerer was the real culprit behind the deaths of Kana and the clan.

Jubei is heartbroken that father went through that, but is also angry at Quan-Chi. Hanzo asks Jubei forgiveness for not protecting him and his mother. To Hanzo’s surprise, Jubei forgives him instantly, saying that he suffered enough and that the past is the past. What matters is that they found each other again. They have a second chance to be a family. From there on, they both vowed that nothing will ever come in-between them again.

I don’t know whether this is a trend that is irreversible or is an episodic event that will see employment revert back to more “traditional” hours. Regardless, the reality is that right now the odds are high that either you or your spouse have a job with atypical hours and responsibilities.

Nonprimary parents who have irregular work schedules offer problems for parents in a divorce

One of the more difficult and tedious processes that a person will have to go through in a divorce is negotiating a parenting plan/possession schedule. First of all, every parent wants to be able to spend as much time as possible with their child. This should come as a shock to nobody. Parents fight long and hard to win more and more time with their child.

Secondly, family circumstances often come into play that forces both sides to change their plan of attack when it comes to settling on a plan to use for visitation. For instance, if you have a job that requires you to work every weekend, but you are also the nonprimary parent then you have a problem. That problem revolves around your needing to work on the main source of your time with your child each month. During the school year unless we are talking about a holiday the only consistent time you have with your child is during the weekend.

The problem that many clients and even their attorneys do not always consider strongly enough is the possibility that even if you are able to come up with a visitation schedule that allows a person to work and see their child regularly, there may be an enforceability issue concerning the order. The reason being is that the language in an order needs to be extremely specific in order to be enforceable. If the language in your order is flexible, but not specific, this may cost you in the long run.

What happens when you or your spouse have an addiction to drugs or alcohol?

It is always a very sad situation when a parent has an addiction to drugs or alcohol. If this describes you or your spouse then this section is especially important for you. A judge will primarily be concerned with your child’s safety and well being. I think you would agree that this is the primary concern that you and your spouse have as well. Unfortunately, if you are addicted to drugs or alcohol your ability to honor this concern can impact your divorce as well.

If it comes out in your divorce that you either have issues related to abuse of alcohol or drugs and/or you have already failed a drug test within your divorce you will likely face the circumstances of having to negotiate a unique possession order that takes these facts into consideration. For instance, you are likely going to be forced to undergo drug testing. Who pays for these orders depends. At first, you could be the one to be liable for the costs of drug testing.

Once you have taken and passed a sufficient number of these tests the responsibility to pay for them could shift to your spouse. In lieu of paying for the tests, a parent may simply tell you that you don’t need to take the tests any longer. If you pass tests and show an improved capacity to live a sober life you can be awarded more time with your child. A failure to take seriously the requirement that you live a sober life may result in your visitation time with your child being curtailed or even eliminated altogether.

What you need to do to win on these issues in court

Divorce Houston: The end result of having these goals in mind is preparing for and making winning arguments in a courtroom to a judge regarding why your situation demands unique possession orders specific to you and your spouse. Evidence in the form of photographs and documents can help you to be able to win in court.

Let’s consider an example before pressing on to different subject matter. Suppose that you are requesting that your summer possession schedule not resemble the SPO. You will need to present more evidence to a judge than a simple assertion that your spouse is not a trustworthy person. Rather, you must testify as to specific reasons why it is appropriate for a court to not follow the SPO in this regard. Always remember that any decision a judge makes in your case will be done to meet the best interests of your child.

Also, if you have a child who is under the age of three it is helpful to make sure your judge is aware of your child’s normal routine. Stability and consistency in parenting are important- and I would argue that they are especially so when it comes to a young child. As we’ve discussed in prior blog posts, whether or not your child is being breastfed, who watches your child during the workday and if your child has ever had overnight visits away from his or her home are important considerations for you to argue to a judge depending on what side of the issue you find yourself in your specific divorce case.

If you are the squeaky wheel be prepared to present your plan

The squeaky wheel in any negotiation needs to be prepared to do extra work to prepare options and plans for their spouse as well as a judge. If you want to propose an outside the box idea to your spouse in mediation you need to come prepared with multiple iterations of that plan.

If you are in a trial setting your attorney needs to have multiple versions of orders ready to go for a judge to sign off on should he or she side with you. Don’t assume that a judge will do the legwork for you- odds are he or she will not. This drastically reduces your ability to achieve whatever your goals are in your divorce case.

The CT took time, of course. It turned out that they weren’t even ready for him, as they had claimed, and Killian ended up waiting at least a quarter of an hour in a tiny prep room off the main department. The only positives of what was essentially a closet: it was warmer than the hallways, and he wouldn’t have to sit in his threadbare gown among all of the ambulatory patients in the main waiting room.

He had been given some generic magazine to help pass the time, but none of the articles were of any interest to him. The alternative, though, was to sit uncomfortably and count the number of times his leg throbbed per minute, which wasn’t all that fun, either.

Alone for the first time since discovering the identity of his companion, Killian’s mind kept wandering as varying emotions flooded through him. Number one was, naturally, concern for her well-being. Always fiercely protective of his ship, it was hardly a surprise that he would be the same in regards to her human self. In his imagination, he kept coming back to an awful image of faceless medical personnel holding her down, forcing their tests on her as she screamed. He knew it was unlikely. They had rules they were required to follow, certain guidelines on consent, and she posed no danger to anyone, including herself. But until he could be back in her presence, he would continue to worry and imagine the worst, no matter how much he tried to rationalize it away.

Second, shock. Still. The idea still startled him. Centuries aboard that lovely ship… he knew of the enchanted wood, talked to her as any proud captain would, but never imagined her sentience. Her understanding, a presence that could observe and empathize but not interact. It was poignant, perhaps a bit unsettling… and he was at a loss. She knew him in ways that no one else did. She’d watched him survive his darkest moments, heard him as he grieved and railed. Felt the loss as two precious passengers were tipped off her decks and given to the sea. Absorbed the blood of many, her captain’s and his victims’ alike. Rocked him to sleep when he was too drunk or injured or despairing to leave his cabin for days on end. She had been a solid presence through storm, curse, portal, and adventure. And she was here now, he could talk to her, and he had no idea what to say.

His thanks could never be enough.

By the time the test was over and he was on his way back to the exam room, Killian was jittery with nerves, impatient to see her again and assure himself of her welfare. The pain meds weren’t helping, making him feel disconnected and edgy. So when he was brought back to their original room, it took him a moment to realize it.
