I see people complain that their immersion is broken when a book set in a historical period uses general contemporary slang/swear words/informal terms ('lads', 'guys', etc) etc and it's just like. You do realize that every language in every era was 'modern' to its users and had at least some vulgarity and slang right? Writing in vaguely 'old timey' speech solely on the basis that it took place a long time ago does not add any realism and if anything kind of detracts from it imo.
Like if you're writing a story in english + in a way that's legible to contemporary english language readers that takes place any time/anywhere that people did not speak contemporary english, you're already 'translating'. I feel like this 'translation' is made more complete by including at least Some vulgarity, informal speech, etc where the core underlying concepts and uses of these words are applicable to the setting. It makes the characters more human, not distanced from the reader by artificially antiquating them with a language that is exclusively hyper-formal and neutered in scope.
#I like the Emily Wilson Iliad translation because of this. Like the text doesn't use outright slang or vulgarity but its language feels#very contemporary because the goal of this translation is to convey the same concepts of the source language in a way that reads#more naturally to the contemporary reader than dead literal translation or forcibly antiquating the english text because Its Old#And I think including vulgarity and some degree of slang can accomplish this as well if the intent is that you are writing people#actually of an era speaking on a normal daily basis (rather than epic poetry or w/e)#I think there are Lines to it where it goes past this purpose (like when I have characters saying 'and I was like ____' that's crossing it)#(I don't include that in the actual text though)#Or like I'll include the word 'cocksucker' but not 'faggot' because the mere concept of Sucking A Peanus and this being seen as a#demeaning act that can be used as in insult is applicable to the setting but the contemporary definition of homosexuality and the#exact ways it's stigmatized is not. One works as a 'translation' of presumed in-universe slang and the other doesn't#I definitely fall into the more extreme end of doing this I don't think including AS MUCH vulgarity as I do is the only way to do it#I just think you should include Some

sso loading screen text "remember that knowledge is power".... imagine the power if the writers knew the lore of the game
#no offense to the likely 1 sse employee doing their best with actual lore but the way they changed bonnys writing was insane and#all the retconning and random shit like when scott was randomly generic evil man in some josh quest#and the shitty dialect things in general like rowan bc that shit doesnt even translate to other langs well its both badly written and not -#- even a good idea whatsoever for a multilanguage game that isnt just in english from the start. but also its just stereotypical and bad#bonny was written charming and interesting and it was really unnecessary to retcon her into this scottish stereotype dialect#and while sometimes they do bring proper stuff from the existing lore like devils gap and turn it into something... theres still-#- a million things that couldve been done better both in the current writing and the old writing as well! it was always a mess#like the ice wraiths of golden hills or whatever theyre called. the dino valley yeti and witch stuff being hinted but abandoned. etc#but they shouldve gotten someone to *read* all that and take notes and try to turn it into something good and more complete.#rather than getting ppl going lol lets change lots of stuff around it will be great (proceeds to make it worse)#disclaimer idk whose fault all of that is but i blame johan sjöberg for being a bad manager of this games potential and#also the whoevers that have had any power to direct and plan and manage shit at that company

Me normally: Let people love what they love
Me, after a Test Match Special commentator expresses their belief that the new All Creatures Great and Small is somehow "better" than the 1978 version: This is pure insanity and TMS can no longer be trusted on anything, how can they even be trusted to know about cricket, do they have no TASTE
#Look it's fine that this show exists and people will watch it and like it and that's ok maybe it's just not for me#But that was like a statement purely designed to piss me off#There were lots of issues with the 1978 adaptation! I still vastly preferred the books any day!#And I actually initially had high hopes for the new one because they at least cast a Scot (albeit a Highlander not a Clydesider) as James#And the actors at least looked a little bit younger than Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy#And thank god Helen actually sounds like she's a farmer's daughter and doesn't speak RP!#But from the half hour I've seen of it I've had to write off this new adaptation#For two major reasons#First of all there's Siegfried#Siegfried is one of the key central aspects of the vibe of the books and therefore key to any adaptation#Robert Hardy was too short and too old for the part but he lived and breathed the character#The twinkle in the eye bouncing off the walls and in and out of rooms followed by half a dozen dogs utterly full of life even when angry#But this new Siegfried is just sort of... Eeyore-esque; he comes into a room and you can see the flowers droop and the set turn grey#Siegfried was angry Siegfried was happy and the historical character he was based on was no stranger to melancholy#Since Donald Sinclair did commit suicide or rather self-euthanasia after Alf Wight and his own wife Audrey died#But this slow grumbly figure in the new adaptation is not Siegfried Farnon- the book character didn't grumble more often he exploded#And why did the adaptation give him a dead wife that's so weird? What could that possibly add to the source material?#And this brings me onto my second problem which is to do with women and age#Firstly I have no idea why they aged down Mrs Hall or at least made her look younger than a woman her age would have back then#But what really drove me mad was when Heriot goes out to see some old woman hill farmer in the episode I saw#And this woman is far too clean and young-looking and you can see that she's wearing 'natural' look make-up#And a perfect set of clothes that looked like they were straight out of the House of Bruar autumn collection catalogue#Say what you like about the 1978 adaptation but old women looked like old women regardless of whether or not they wore make-up#It may be that the better quality of television screens means that the 'natural look' shows up on screen more clearly than it would have#But natural look make-up was not really a thing in the 1930s and for old women Yorkshire hill farmers I doubt they'd have much on at all#They just don't seem to be capable of allowing people to look old and wrinkled and real or have bad teeth or unattractive clothes#And everything is far too tidy- everybody looks far too perfectly country and quaint#Anyway the moral of this story is of course that I always recommend reading the books because they're much better#than any tv adaptation; but if forced to choose at least the 1970s one felt real and yet didn't have to be grim either#Ok that's my rant over please do feel free to enjoy the show I just got annoyed because the opinion was expressed on TMS

i think the ending of no.6 is thematically perfect. the 9th novel did have pacing issues (something asano atsuko herself has admitted) but no.6 beyond was amazing and a great final touch to the series so i've nvr really felt like we needed any more books.. HOWEVER I trust asano as an author. there must be something she wants to convey no matter what, something with meaning and something that is meant to be there. I feel like she wouldnt write about the two if there wasnt deep intent and thought behind it.
#shion.txt#nothing is confirmed though and it could be a bundle of short stories that have more to do with the past rather than future#kind of like beyond and the various short stories that came w some of the manga editions#either way i shall write my predictions just in case.. still need to write my musical predictions as well..#the ending of no.6 leaves you wanting more for sure but i think its bitterly good in that way..#much like bitter choco.. haha hehe#my old landlord has left me on read btw. but i dont have the time to think about that. im t hinking about number six

do you guys ever sit and remember that dennis takes a mental health day is an episode that exists
#ada speaks#i think i could probably recite the entire one sided phone conversation he has with daisy by heart and i havent seen the ep in months#i don't know how to explain it but#from what little ive read of ross' writing it feels like. when you click onto a fanfic and you feel immediate deep trust of the author#like it just clicks#the cookbook characterization specifically. is like.#i would put my life in your hands#and im sure we will get more eps by him and i really hope that continues because i think its been a very long time since the shows had#writers that i feel Get the characters in a way that feels effortless rather than. overcompensating.#like you can smell that writer's signature no matter how hard they try to cover it up with jokes and subversions#which isnt always a bad thing and im sure if we do get more maloney eps i'll pick up on his writers quirks too#but it doesn't feel like he's trying to copy anyone/pull from old eps it feels like he has a good grasp on things which makes it feel fresh#i find that long running shows hit a point where episodes start to feel less cohesive and more like. segmented short films#but if you have a really good group of writers and they find their groove its like. yeah. ok.#i think season 3 is a good study because marder and rosell's influence is all over the entire season#later seasons you can literally just. Feel which eps they worked on because its got a completely different vibe from the rest of the season#16 still suffers from that segmentation but#i think all the first time sunny writers (and nina's first solo ep) were all absolutely fuckin bangers and they've got a good team in there#anyway. characterization of dennis flipflops a lot. but the rest of the gang arguably gets it worse at times#i think megan's dee is the absolute worst aside from conor galvin's#and i understand wanting to write her as a girlfailure who is just. horrible. but.#ok. comparing self help book dee to ross' cookbook dee. i dont even have to say anything do i.#she's like. The Woman. in the self help book. and i fucking could not stand it. ross' dee is so perfect though#and his frank. MAN.#EVERYONE FUCKING RUINS FRANK.#i think marder and rosell's frank is a lot of fun because hes clearly based on marder's dad and acts believably#a lot of writers struggle to capture his. frank-ness.#he's sort of suffered from like. bland pervy senile old man writing for a long time#and ross brought back him actually being a competent businessman#IM OUT OF TAGS IM SHUTTING UP

you ever write up a combination of words you're really proud of at the time bc you think it's vivid but it's actually so atrocious that you remember it eight years later bc it's burned itself into your long-term memory? just me?
#i'm literally laughing my entire ass off rn. i can't believe i found this fic i wrote at 15 and orphaned when i came to my senses abt both#my complete inability and total aversion to writing first person as well as the fact that the english language should never have been#subjected to its words being done dirty like this 😭#also i straight up fucking LIED in the authors note??? i said i'd broken my knee as a kid which is categorically false. i fell down some#stairs and banged it up and it's a tiny bit weak ig but i didn't break it? all any teens born after y2k know is eat hot chip and lie...#still not over the first line... the flip flop bit i remembered but i'd COMPLETELY forgotten 'a shriek seeped out of my throat'. girl. what.#how does a shriek seep exactly? the world may never know...#and the use of 'groped' is also sending me 😭 AND 'crash bash whump thump' girlllll send help holy shit i can't stop coughing & laughing#the rest of the fic isn't quite this bad but it's very purple yet ineloquent and rough. it's a good reminder of how much i've improved and#honestly i'd rather read this utterly amature fic bc it's at least charming in its lack of skill rather than infuriating like some of my#oneshots that are still on my page bc they're more comprehensible but just bad enough to make me cringe. getting mad at this oneshot would#be like getting bad at a kid's stick figure drawing. like. it's just kinda cute to see someone starting out on their creative journey#my old sw oneshots on the other hand are like the awkward growing pains of puberty. you just can't help but wince at the reminder#this is okay to reblog btw bc it's objectively hilarious and i don't mind ppl finding humor in it#len speaks

reading older books is so crazy bc it shows how many things we consider almost unbreakable rules of writing have been invented like maybe 40 years ago at most. i feel like compared to other modern art forms writing comes with a lot more rules to adhere to if you want your story to be "good" and i guess this just really emphasises to me that this, too, is just a moment in art history
#im reading death in venice which is from 1912 so rather modern compared to most of my Old Books#and like first of all the sentences are Insane of course. one went on for literally 15 or so lines#but the 2nd chapter is literally just a psychoanalysis of the main character which in modern writing is unthinkable#show dont tell etc#and i guess it just struck me how crazy it is that in a little over a century so many rules were made up to the point#where if this was published today it would probably be dismissed bc of those qualities. crazy. everything is temporary!#personal

it's weird how "things i care about" and "things i blog about" are overlapping but very distinct circles. like yeah i care obsessively about the ulster cycle and also blog about it constantly but there are so many things in my life that i care about that i just..... don't post about. so many books i enjoy that i have nothing to say other than maybe sometimes reblogging a post about them when it comes my way. so many things that i'm secretly feral about but do it all inside my own head
#especially the more obscure shit bc there isn't a lot of point going off on some long character meta if nobody knows what i'm talking about?#i'd rather do it in a group chat with like. two friends who've read the book#also with new publications there's the fear of spoilers and things so i can't yell about character deaths as much#except when in an existing fandom space where it's common knowledge#whereas with medieval literature i think it's fair game. spoilers aren't really a thing in 1000-year-old stories#especially when they're called shit like 'the violent death of [name]'#personal#i should write fic of more obscure things though#dipping my toe in the water writing fic of my friends' books so i know i have a solid grasp of THEIR feelings about the book#gonna work my way steadily through the group chat perhaps#but maybe one day i'll write fic of something modern where i've never met the author. le gasp

I was just rereading the short stories I wrote for workshop in college and it's weirdddddd because they're not bad, but also... I would NOT write that now
#like even what the stories are about#but these are also 3+ years old so#ive written so much since then and yeah 95% of that is fan fic but hey writing is writing#my prof would always say too if you do a masters for creative writing it's better to wait some years rather than go right away#and at the time i was like yeah i guess#but reading my stuff back now it's like woahh my writing is way different#best way to describe it would be simpler i think#im reading it like okay this is decent writing but that's it?#flythepost

the only bonus of not updating oc bios/references/code/designs/etc. for years is that the change & improvement is more apparent
#me when i rewrite a bio and the 1st paragraph already reads better than the entire old bio >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>#sy.txt#i write them more like short stories rn and it goes so mega fucking hard#especially when i get to fuck with elements or omitting & hinting at things because i also like to write it from the character's pov#rather than the all-known supreme being of blorbos telling you the chronology of events including every tiny fact ever always#the only minus is that i tend to write in 3s and also write long ass novels so to read it. i need to actually sit down for it :|

𓈒 ˙ 𝐖𝐄 𝐖𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐋𝐀𝐌𝐁𝐒 / horror, sci-fi, thriller. a camp nano project.
BREAKING NEWS! SENATOR'S SON ARRESTED FOR MURDER! Police chief Simon Brozik reports that Dorian Starosta, son of Senator Ludvik Starosta, is indisputably to blame for the mysterious death that befell the Senator's late wife, Thea Starosta. Dorian suspected to be involved in a cover-up operation alongside three others whom are rumored to be childhood acquaintances of the Starosta family. "I always suspected something to be off about him," Chief Brozik says. "I am disgusted to have discovered that my suspicions were true."
⸺⠀THE HEADLINES.
TITLE: We Were Lambs. GENRE : Adult Horror Sci-fi Thriller. STATUS: Plotting &&. Outlining. SETTING: Set in a futuristic country based off of the Czech Republic. THEMES &&. TROPES: Lgbt+ cast, Religious trauma and guilt, Unresolved grieving, Unreliable narrator, Found family, Friends to Enemies to Lovers, Utopian world with Dystopian undertones. CONTENT WARNINGS: Substance abuse, Graphic depictions of murder and torture, Abuse, Gore, Mentions of disordered eating. LINKS: Wip Tag, Pinterest.
⸺⠀THE GOSSIP.
WHEN DORIAN STAROSTA is arrested alongside three of his old childhood bestfriends for the murder of his mother, Dorian's world begins to crumble all around him. Sentenced to life in prison, the four are given the opportunity to participate in a psychiatric rehabilitation program in the form of a virtual-reality game. If won, their criminal records will be wiped, garnering them the opportunity to return to society as changed upstanding-citizens. But if they lose? They are promised a slow, tortuous death. With nothing left to lose and a whole lot to prove, they begrudgingly accept. Signing their lives away to be confined in a virtual hellscape. Because Dorian Starosta is many things but he knows a murderer is not one of them, and he'll be damned if he is not able to prove that.
⸺⠀THE SUSPECTS.
DORIAN STAROSTA - A grieving classical pianist living under the shadow of his father with no recollection of the timeline before and after the death of his mother.
SALMA SAHAR - The cold-hearted assistant of a famous fashion designer. With the rumors surrounding her whispering that her positions opening wasn't all that accidental, people aren't all surprised when the verdict in the Starosta case is guilty.
VERGIL LIANG - An Oxford academic with a silver tongue and sharp mind. He fled to England alongside his brother weeks after Thea died, the only time he decides to speak is to ask how his brother is.
WINSLOW PAVLOVICH - More a ghost than a man. Sheathed in mystery the path he followed after the death of Thea is unknown, though, the numerous scars that have showed up on his skin since the four last met is one of the only hints he wordlessly gives away.

it may be obvious to others but i am genuinely surprised every time i go back to old writing and see that I've actually improved since. who knew practicing a craft makes you better in it. this has literally never happened to me before
#I'm talking abt lyric writing btw#stories are..... a different case (somehow i only get worse with time)#also everyone pls cheer and clap for my positive attitude here.#that rather than going ''my old writing is shit i should've been killed for that alone'' i say ''i improved :)''.#that also never happened before 🧐 I've got a master's degree in self loathing so it's hard to break the habit.#the last thing i wrote tho i started in august 2022 and got stuck with it until literally 2 days ago#so you can actually see the difference between the first few lines and the rest of the song lol#they're fine. like. there's a reason i didn't delete them.#but reading the third verse and looking at the structure my younger self wouldn't have gone for. they're good i think#i need to record a draft of it hmmmm maybe some other time 😩

Ughhhhhhh I hate writing and I hate not writing and I hate myself
#nearly bought a digital typewriter today. actually i DID buy a digital typewriter today. officially yes i have bought a digital typewriter.#the money for the digital typewriter has left my account but i have emailed them to cancel the order because i can't in good faith buy#a digital typewriter when i don't fucking WRITE#i thought it might help me get back into it. distraction free and while allowing me to not judge my own writing#and be continuously editing while i write and going 'i'm crap i'm crap i'm crap no one will ever read this and if they do they will think#that i'm garbage and that i should feel bad etc etc etc'#but it's too expensive and i have the feeling i wouldn't even like or use the thing once i got it#because the IDEAS! the ideas aren't coming to me. or rather they are but none of them seem to stick#i feel underconfident in writing any of them#and then i have old projects that i've always wanted to get back to like the tennis romance thing but SO much has changed since i first#started drafting it. like i don't even know if i like the main couple anymore. i kind of want to put both of them with different OCs of min#but it'd switch up the WHOLE story if i had a different cast#in fact most of the problem lies in the fact that i have this long-running bedtime story i tell myself every night with lore#and a massive cast of characters that i switch out depending on who i'm most interested in right now and every so often i incorporate new#themes and ideas and motifs and plot points sometimes based on media i've been watching because it's MY bedtime story and it doesn't matter#if i plagiarise in my own brain. but then obviously i can't plagiarise in real life#and none of my bedtime stories are GOING anywhere. sometimes i only get through a scene or two before i fall asleep#all of which means my bedtime story is not so much a sweeping epic novel but a sitcom with way too many characters#most of which are werewolves to be honest and sometimes for my own wish fulfilment one of them will walk out of my head#and take care of my problems for me by lending me £1million or murdering my best friend's ex. in my mind obviously#so it's like. it's a case of getting in there and annexing off the stuff i think i can use#it's like yeah i've definitely written several romance novels in my head in the process of this but does it matter if they're IN my HEAD#to be honest i feel like my main strength is in creating characters. like i have this one family of werewolves i've been slowly but surely#adding members to since i was like 16. maybe younger? no yeah i think i made the first one when i was 12#they're compelling to ME anyway. i care about them. it's just PLOTS. i can't plot#if a book could just be a lot of dialogue and sex scenes and silly moments and character studies i'd be alright#i also can't describe settings. don't ask me to because i can't#and now i'm just annoyed with myself because i sat down at my laptop to try to write and instead i'm here complaining about how i don't wri#and if i had the digital typewriter... i mean i'd probably still be doing this i'd just no longer have £300#i don't have the £300 anyway. i hope to christ they refund my card i'm a fucking idiot
