Do people spell your name wrong very often? LOL, of course. When your name is the less-common variant, expect it to be misspelled all the time. Only like 2 out of 10 times do people ask me if my name is spelled with an i or y, but it’s them I appreciate the most.

Who will your next phone call be with? I’m not expecting any phone call for a while.

Would you rather be taken or single? Ugh, taken. I love being in a relationship; I always enjoyed looking after someone else and doing things to make them happy. Being independent has its perks too, but I always feel lonely at the end of the day.

Do you plan to move any time soon? Nope, I’m taking it slow.

Would you rather have pink or green hair? I’d go with green but only if it’s a dark shade, like the color of seaweed. I wouldn’t appreciate neon green on my hair.

Do you think stargazing is a romantic thing to do with someone? Sure, but I think it also works platonically. Stargazing is generally a nice and relaxing thing to do whether you’re alone, with an SO, with a friend, or with a bunch of friends.

What's your opinion on sex before marriage? It’s whatever. People can do what they want, and the only things they should watch out for are consent and being safe.

What made you in the mood you are in right now? I’m relaxed at the moment and that’s thanks to the fact that it’s Sunday, I’ve recently gotten into a new hobby and a show I can dive into, and tomorrow’s a holiday so no work for me :) Gonna make the most out of this evening for sure.

Have you ever told someone to go to Hell? I’ve most likely done so, but only as a joke.

Do you know anyone named Jos? As in, pronounced ‘Jaws’? No. That’s one of the more unique names I’ve heard.

Do you have any magazine subscriptions? Nah. Even when I still collected magazines, I preferred physically going to magazine stands and buying new issues. It was more exciting that way.

What do you sleep in? A bed, most often. Sometimes I’ll pass out on the couch but that doesn’t happen too much anymore.

Have you changed in the past six months? Yes, both naturally and forcibly. It’s been... quite a year for me, even if we put Covid aside.

Do you bite your nails? When I’m anxious. I haven’t had to do this for a while though, and I mostly did when I was in school awaiting a presentation I had to make.

Do you like the name Natasha? I used to like it when I was younger, but it slipped out of my favorites for no real reason at some point; it just did.

Does your house have a white picket fence? It used to, but we had them removed after a string of typhoons increasingly deteriorated their quality over the years.

Do you have a YouTube account? How many videos have you watched on it? I do. Is the second one a real question lol? I’ve watched thousands, as I’m sure most people who use YouTube have done as well. This is like asking how many tweets in total I’ve read on Twitter since I first signed up.

Do you know anyone who is really, really conceited? My mom can be one. She likes to act as if she can do no wrong.

Who’s the last person you told off? My manager at work. I did something she asked me to do and followed the instructions down to a T...and then she said I shouldn’t have done it? That kind of thing happens at work every now and then and it’s fucking exhausting. It’s like every move I make has its own script and the script changes every five minutes.

Are you optimistic? Sure, but not always.

How do you get to school/your job? I work from home, but under normal circumstances I would’ve been driving myself to the workplace.

Love or lust? Love.

Do you smoke cigarettes? Yeah, but I keep my use of it at an extreme minimum. I’ve only done it socially and I’ve only asked for cigarettes from my friends who have their own packs (and were willing to give me a couple of sticks, of course).

Have you ever been so mad at someone you hurt them? Like, physically? Yes, but it’s only because I was hit first.

Have you ever met someone you met online in person? This is on surveys a lot...yes. I’ve met several online friends who were once in the wrestling circle with me; and one time I bought a product from someone online so we had to meet up for that, too.

Have you ever not studied for a test and gotten 100%? Probably not a 100%, but close. I never studied for my Language exams in middle school because it was just literal English grammar, which I was already good at by that point.

Where is your boyfriend/girlfriend right now? I don’t have any.

Have you ever won a contest for public speaking? No, but I’ve joined one. I got a little frazzled by the middle of my speech (it was impromptu and I didn’t know my question until I got on stage) so in the end that cost me first place.

Are there any woods near where you live? Nah, it’s a private village so it’s super suburban and no hidden woods or forests anywhere.

What did you do today? So far I’ve watched 3/4 of an episode of Start Up, cried, washed my face, washed the glass that I drank soju from last night, and sat up in bed and continued this survey.

What was your favorite subject in grade six? Science was fun then. Partly because I could tell the teacher liked me, and partly because her method of teaching was big on memorization of terms and processes which was always more my speed.

How far away does your best friend live from you? Both live around 20-30 minutes away, just in different directions.

Do you think you could write a book? A memoir, yes. Anything fictional, no.

TOTO’S BIRTH STORY

I keep telling myself that I’d write a birth story, and right now I’m debating if I should or turn this post talking about our day...

I’ve made up my mind, a birth story it is.

A while back I had to “take a break” from pretty much everything because the doctor said that I was putting my body through a lot of stress which was why I’ve been MIA from any social media and work for a long while, but of course being that it was me, I disobeyed that order and called myself trying to get a “little something” done so that I can have income and not rely on Kohaku’s money for the family. Although I was on maternity leave and was receiving my maternity check, I felt like I needed to make more for saving and etc. That did not turn out how I anticipated it to be.

A week before I had to go through an emergency c-section, which was my last hospital check-up, I was informed that I had been (against my will) scheduled for a c-section not more than two days after my due date, (what the hell right?!) and that I was told that my baby was in a posterior position which apparently “Isn’t good" and that it would “most likely end up with me needing a c-section anyways" (another what the hell, right?! moment) but despite the odds and me being terrified out of my mind, I managed to embrace the weekend which was all about being together as a family.

A week later, April 1st at 2:30 pm, I was having some unusual contraction like pains, I was bleeding more than I normally do, having crampings in my uterus and I was afraid that I was losing her or having a stillbirth. We managed to get the kids half packed and into the car and rushed to the hospital dropping me off at emergency then later having Kohaku’s parents meeting us up there to take the kids off our hands. It was a semi-long wait until we got to see a doctor but the nurses were kind and hooked me up with my own waiting room and made me as comfortable as possible. They gave me medication to help me with the pain (nothing serious, literally some pain killers), hubbs sat with me throughout the wait in the room reassuring me that everything was going to be fine.

He even managed to get me to play a joke on my friends since it was April fools, that I was going into labor. At first, I was mad at him telling him how that wasn’t funny (even though I played the same trick on him that morning) eventually I gave in and did it. Buy joke was on us, because 15 minutes later after a few diagnosis test the hospital doctor came back to tell me that I had a placental abruption where the placenta detached itself from my uterus along with the baby being in a posterior position and in distress. As soon as I heard that I started panicking because I just knew none of that was good. The doctor told me that they needed to perform an emergency c-section on me that day or I could lose the baby.

That being said, I swallowed my pride and did what I had to do (preparing myself mentally) and got ready for the c-section. At this point everything started happening so fast, we called our friends and family members telling them that this was no joke and that everything is happening right now along with keeping us in their prayers. By the time I got all the texting and phone calls and crying over, I got a knock on the door by my lovely Doc saying it was show time. I was prepared to feel them cut me open and my organs be exposed to the open air, but, honestly, I did not feel a thing. Just my husband holding my hand and kissing my forehead telling me everything is fine and was going to be over soon.

He didn’t lie before I knew it I heard someone yelling the time, a bunch of commotion, then seeing the doctors holding her in the air and another cutting her umbilical cord. Throughout all the noise, I couldn't dictate the sound of my baby girl crying, so I cried instead. Not knowing what happened or if she was okay. A part of me felt like I failed as a mother for not bringing a healthy baby into this world, or doing what I can, what my body was supposed to do, to make sure she was safe in my womb and perfectly fine when she came out. My husband saw me crying and wondered off to see if she was okay, of course, they denied him access to follow them though. It was messy, I have to say.

After getting me all stitched up and into a room ( I was DRAINED by then and the pain killers were wearing off) the doctors finally came in to tell us that she wasn’t responding when they had taken her away, but they finally got her to respond and she’s doing a lot better than she was before. They offered to take us to see her and of course, we went. She was in her incubator with tubes connected to every inch of her tiny body. She was weighing 4lb & 4oz, god she was... Still is so tiny.

I didn’t want to document or take pictures and plaster her all over social media with her being connected to all that machinery, so I just simply uploaded one photo that hubs took and uploaded it, announcing that she born and to keep us in your prayers... And I thank you, once again, for all of your well wishes. It truly means a lot. Baby girl had a great recovery, not only that (but thanks to my shitty insurance) she got to come home within a week. I’m missing details, no? Well, I have a newborn to tend to who is screaming in her crib right now, so excuse me making this short or any misspelling, for I don’t have the time or energy to proof read.

Getting out of a speeding ticket for insurance purposes?

Is there a way I can get out of a speeding/failure to meet at a stop sign ticket? I really don't care about paying the ticket or court costs at all, but I just can not, really, really, can not pay the extra insurance money. I am paying out of state tuition AND I am in Architecture. Architecture is SUCH an expensive major. The police officer (whose name I can't even read on the ticket because it is just a scribble) gave me a ticket for speeding and failure to stop at a stop sign. There was absolutely no one else coming from any of the four sides, so I might have not stopped completely but I did slow down almost to a stop and then kept going. Then like I said I was going at 36 on a 20 zone. This was at 2 a clock in the morning when there was literally not a soul around. The police officer was practically hiding in a dark, empty parking lot and came out of no where. I really don't want to make excuses for myself. I know what I did was wrong and I'll admit it. But this is my first ticket, and I really don't want t have to pay so much more money on my insurance for a slip as small as this one. My boyfriend was with mi in the car if that means anything. I really don't know, I've never had a ticket before. I've been reading up on how to get out of a ticket, and a lot of people say it is good to talk to the officer, and I thought about doing it but the officer's name is not readable at all. I currently do not have any insurance but i do know that i do not meet the requirements for medicade. Will this mean less care for me and my baby durrning my preg? I can make payments but i can not afford to make the whole payment at the time of the visits it will have to be shedualed. any suggestions? surgery day!

it’s long! contains bodily functions and a long day at the hospital! it’s probably not very interesting!

the night before:

i was pretty worked - it seemed like it was all scheduled very quickly, and we hadn’t even worked out stuff with insurance (this was apparently intentional but i was pretty unclear on what was happening at the time), so what if they didn’t cut me up? what if i was getting ready for nothing? what if i was pregnant or something and they wouldn’t perform surgery?

so i spent -1 morning calling and being called by the hospital - “are you /sure/ i don’t need to have gotten pre-approval, am I going to have prescriptions afterwards, ...”, the afternoon cleaning up the apartment (my room’s all shiny now!), the night going through a bunch of japanese flashcards. ate dinner at 7pm; people kept calling me during, so i didn’t finish until 8. my mother was one of the callers; she started crying about it and hung up; i’m not really clear on why.

right before bed, i got out all the clothes i wanted for the next day: shirt/jeans/socks/shoes/jacket for the morning, sweatpants and flipflops for going home in. cohuman drugged me so i could go to sleep.

day of:

i woke up at about 8:30, sat in bed for a bit, then took a shower with hibiclens (per pre-op instructions) (don’t get it in your face, you will apparently just lose your sight and your hearing? oh my god). cohuman went out to get a bagel and coffee for themself. i was technically allowed to drink clear liquids (water, gatorade, tea, apple juice) but i was a little nervous that it was secretly not allowed and was on my instruction sheet by mistake, so i didn’t drink anything.

at like 9:45, i was like “WE SHOULD TAKE BEFORE PICTURES” and cohuman was like “no? we’re leaving in five minutes?” so instead i just weighed myself.

a few minutes later we called a car, and left at about 9:55 i think? because i hadn’t had anything to eat or drink, and because i don’t ride in cars very often, and because i was scared they would cancel the surgery still, i was a little dizzy/sick feeling in the car... but managed to get to the hospital (mt. zion) with no incident at 10:10.

we went straight to check-in; the person who checked me in was a little confused because my license said ‘rory’ on it and my insurance was under my old name (feminine, historical misspelling) and wasn’t sure what to call me. alas my hospital bracelet had to have my insurance name on it, but pretty much everyone who called me oldname, once they saw me, started using my last name when it was necessary to talk about it.

at about 10:20 or 10:25, someone called my oldname; they seemed a little surprised but went with it when i responded. cohuman and i were led to a private room this time; i was told to take off & put away my clothes, put on a hospital gown, pee in a cup, put on a hairnet, and sit in a chair when i was done.

a little after i’d done all that, three nurses came in at once and swarmed me: putting on a blood pressure cuff, taking blood samples, setting up an iv, checking my medical history, turning on the gown warmer... all the action and the heat and the blood was getting to me, so that reclined my chair all the way back and turned the gown warmer into a gown cooler (! so comfy).

a harpist came in a little bit later and played for a while; cohuman talked to them about a laser harp a friend is making.

after the harpist left, the nurses came back; i had to take a couple of meds pre-surgery - tylenol, voltaren, neurontin/gabapentin in pill format; some patch behnd my ear to “reduce secretions” but was maybe was to reduce nausea after surgery. got to take them with water, which was NERVE WRACKING and i was like “are you sure this is okay, they’re not going to cancel surgery if i do this, right?”

(yes it was fine)

anesthesiologist the first came in; went over anesthesia stuff for a bit; said anesthesia with a hard t (“teasia”) instead of th (“thesia”). mostly they had to check that yes a tube will go down my throat, they aren’t going to knock out a tooth while doing it, have i had surgery before and how did i react to anesthesia then?, stuff like that.

dr rowen came in, talked about medical stuff: yep we’re taking out your uterus and fallopian tubes and ovaries and cervix, we’re not gonna take out any other organs unless we discover that you have a ticking time bomb shaped like an appendix, “you have good insurance, so they’ll prob cover it, but it also meant we couldn’t do preapproval”. she talked to cohuman a bit while i was talking to other people, and they’re going to figure out what needs to be done to be Absolutely Sure insurance covers it, probably. (cohuman will have to fill in their discussion, but the result is that at some point i’m gonna sign some things so they are Authorized to represent me for insurance reasons or something.)

two of the other doctor humans/med students/residents/Not Top Doctor/i’m not really sure who they were but they were younger than dr. rowen/people came in during the tail end of my conversation with dr. rowen, and talked to me for a bit about surgery too. i didn’t really have any questions by then, i was just sorta hyped.

the other anesthesiologist came in (why were there two?), talked a bit, left, came back. “Think about a calming place where you want to be, it’ll make going into anesthesia better” - “Ah, I’ll think about the operating room!”

i went to the bathroom, forgetting i was going to be catheterized anyway, then they stuck me in a wheelchair and wheeled me over to the operating room. cohuman came with us for the first bit; we said goodbye; i think they went to get lunch.

once i was in the operating room, they directed me to sit on the table - wait no gotta have the back of the gown open, dang you’re tall, move down a bit, move up a bit, move down a bit, up a bit, ah, we got it. once i was situated, they added the ?sedative? to my iv at that time, which started to hit pretty fast.

“last time i noticed it after about 30 seconds, i think.” “Oh, you’ll feel it in 23.” “23? So specific.” “Well, 28.”

they prepped for operating and we/they talked a bit about where i’m from (charleston, sc) - after a bit they put a face mask on me so i couldn’t talk all too much, but, you know.

aaaand the next thing i remember is being in the recovery room. i basically responded to every question with “I want [cohuman], where is [cohuman], cohumanはどこですか。”

let me tell you asking in a language that literally no one in the room speaks, including you, is not a good way to get answers.

my nurse in there was nice, but busy and kinda … i never really had an idea of what i needed to be doing and i never knew when/if he was doing stuff for me? so it was sorta frustrating.

also my call button apparently wasn’t plugged in for a long time, which, oops. (cohuman points out that, in particular, it was not plugged in when i was in Severe Pain and trying to get someone’s attention to Please Make It Stop)

i was in a public room again rather than a private room, which was fine. the person in the curtained-off room next to me kept talking about food which was pretty funny whenever i overheard it.

cohuman said i was out of surgery at ?2:30?, and woke up somewhere around 3:15-3:30, and that they came in at 3:30.

cohuman had gone to the nearby japanese mall for lunch, and also picked up a book to show me when i came out. the title is something like “fitting english words”; it’s about things that usually you’d use one word in japanese for, that in english have two separate words, like tall/high and key/lock.

i couldn’t look at it too long, though; i was seeing double. i could only read or look at my phone by covering up one of my eyes.

where my cervix /had/ been hurt a lot, like i probably would’ve been crying except that i was too dehydrated to cry. they added some painkiller to the iv (not sure what kind), and had some oral ones for me to take, but i wasn’t allowed to take them until i had eaten something. they brought me some graham crackers and water, and i spent … a long time attempting to eat two graham crackers. my mouth was bone dry so swallowing was, uh, difficult. but eventually i got them down and also the painkillers.

at some point i was like “hey i’m bleeding, vaginally, and i know that’s expected but also i prefer not to bleed directly onto the hospital bed?” and the nurse was like “it’s fine” and i was like “i have years of menstruation taboo and would prefer to not bleed directly on the hospital bed” and then they disappeared for a while and came back with hospital mesh underwear and pads, which was a little funny. they had to put it on me, which i think normally i would be uncomfortable with, but also i was fresh out of surgery and didn’t give a damn.

i tried to use the bathroom; nothing came out. i wasn’t sure if this was because i had no urine in my body or because the catheter had irritated the heck out of my urethra. so i drank a bunch of liquids, waited ?30 minutes?, tried again, no dice. asked the nurse what do, they were like “we could do an ultrasound” and then left for a while, which i thought was them blowing me off. after a bit they came back and did an ultrasound and were like “nah, you just have 90ml in there”, then left again with not much explanation. (cohuman looked it up; humans usually want to use the bathroom at 250+ml.) apparently during surgery they also noticed i was dehydrated because only 120ml drained out of me then? so it was more likely that i just was too dehydrated to pee rather than “i am physically blocked from doing so”.

drank more drank more drank more drank more and finally managed to use the bathroom. immediately: I SUCCEEDED LET’S GO HOME, so i got dressed in (oversized shirt, sweatpants, toesocks, flipflops). i was not allowed to carry or hold my bag; i was put in a wheelchair and wheeled to the door. we were driven home; i spent the whole ride with my eyes closed because whatever the heck i had been given was making me fall into a half-dream state really easily and i was getting funny mental images from it. pico wearing the croissant and jumping into a pile of [housemate]’s records, pico playing with some carpet samples that i was trying to look at, extremely vivid grassy walls, ...
