But they were all of them deceived
Tumblr media
The world is changed.
I feel it in the water.
I feel it in the earth.
I smell it in the air.
Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.
It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf-Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power. For within these rings was bound the strength and the will to govern each race.
But they were all of them deceived, for another ring was made.
Deep in the land of Mordor, in the Fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged a master ring, and into this ring he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life.
One ring to rule them all.

Crack Silm Relationships I’d like to read about II
2. Daeron and Any Fëanorian but Maglor
This one is just because I would like to add even more awkwardness/drama to their family dynamics. We are told that Maglor is considered the best singer, “second only to Daeron”, so I would like to put them in the same room/family on a regular basis. I think they would behave like hostile cats. The Fëanorians would be torn between family solidarity (Maglor, our brother,  is the best !)and the fact that they have ears (they can tell that Daeron is objectively better).
I think Daeron/Caranthir could be interesting. I think Caranthir is very depressed that his wife left him, and he’s a loner, so is being pretty miserable all alone in his castle with his snooty servants, and I want him to be happy. I think he is a bit overlooked among the Fëanorians, because he’s not tall and well-formed like Maedhros, he’s not a genius singer like Maglor, he’s not handsome like Celegorm, and he’s not like his father like Curufin. So I think he would like someone to hang out with him, be nice to him, and he would love a trophy husband. Daeron would sing to him and tell him he’s great. Daeron is the greatest singer, so Caranthir would finally have something to be super proud of. The other Fëanorians (minus Maglor) would also be super proud of the new genius family member (they like collecting geniuses, it’s a family thing), they would boast about him when Maglor is not around (and look super awkward when Maglor is around).
Daeron is in love with Lúthien, but it’s hopeless. He’s too Elvish and too clean for her tastes. So he should just leave and go somewhere where he can be better appreciated. He’s an artists, so he would be attracted to the fatal charm of the Fëanorian drama. He would spot the potential for great songs. Plus he’s pissed off at Lúthien and her dad, who never recognised him at his just value, so he “passes to the enemy”. He immediately recognises in Caranthir a fellow brooder, who also thinks he is under-valued. Plus Caranthir might be one of the least-good looking Fëanorian, but he’s still a Fëanorian (he’s hot). He’s got blazing eyes and amazing black hair, plus probably looks a bit eldrichty to an Elf who did not go to Valinor like Daeron, all things we know that Daeron is partial to.
Next thing you know, Daeron lets himself be pampered by an actual prince like he always thought he deserved. He writes songs about how great Caranthir is, and about how much the Arafinweans suck, which Caranthir always thought he deserved. Caranthir gets super intense at singing/music competitions (mad football/soccer parents energy), and nobody dares to utter even the mildest of criticisms against Daeron, even well out of earshot of Caranthir, because we all know how hot-tempered and prone to violence he can be. Daeron’s reputation, as a result, has never been better.
Maybe the fact that Maglor is considered “second only to Daeron” is in fact because Maglor doesn’t have a proud, hot-tempered and stabbing-happy husband, so whenever people say nice things about Maglor, they immediately feel the need to add “but Daeron is better, of course”, no matter where they are in Beleriand and beyond.
3. Amrod and Amras and Amazon Wives
These are the two Fëanorians we know the least about. If they both make it to Beleriand, it seems that they just enjoy hanging out together in the woods and hunt, and somehow manage to survive all the way to the last Kinslaying. So maybe they are like proto-hobbits Elves, who are just happy to chill together as bachelors and out of harm’s way. Maybe they invent pipe-weed and waistcoats during the 500 odds years where they do not have much fighting to do.
But since they seem to be spending lots of time East, in the forest, and seem pretty good at fighting, I would like to give them Avari Amazon Wives. Maybe also twins, for the matching look. They would woo each other with their respective prowesses with bows. They would go on hunts together. I imagine the Fëanorians in general being interested in other varieties of Elves, and in not marrying other Noldor. So A&A could go on adventures in the East with their cool wives. Maybe have some more red-hair babies, if they feel like it. That’s it, I have nothing more on that.
3. Curufin and a Dwarf.
We only have unions of Elves and Men, and nothing with Dwarves. But Curufin, we are told, befriends the Dwarves enough that the few things Elves know about Khuzdul all come from him (not Celebrimbor. Curufin). Which denotes a very deep level of trust and friendship there, since Tolkien wrote somewhere (yes, somewhere), that Dwarves keep that language Super Secret. They never speak or teach it to anyone, in fact they never speak it in front of non-Dwarves, preferring to learn and use other race’s tongues in front of them to keep it a secret. They even go as far as to keep their Khudzul names secret, and only ever use other non-Khuzdul ones with non-Dwarves. And yet Curufin managed to learn some of it, or at least to learn some things about it.
Of course Curufin is great at smithing, is probably super interested in Dwarvish techniques and maybe aesthetics. A Dwarf partner would also be interested on learning more about Fëanorian Forge Magic. They would have a lot of interests in common (well, they would have forge-work, but since they would be both super into it, that’s quite enough).
Curufin is also his Father’s Son, so I don’t think he would care what anybody would have to say about his choice of partner, or be particularly prejudiced when it comes his choice of romantic interest. If someone is going to cross that interracial barrier in Middle-Earth, it’s Curvo.

..Path of Alfheim: FMC Concept Art..
Recently I've been awe-struck by the beautiful narration and world-building of a certain fic, "Path of Alfheim" by @𝔥3𝔩𝔣𝔞𝔢𝔯𝔦𝔢. So much so that I just had to visualize the FMC of this story.
Although, I do have to say that my art is not gospel. While I adore this story, the concept art that I've created is based purely on how I think the reader appears throughout the fic and would be considered as fanart and nothing more. (Unless anything gets green-lit by the writer).
The writer, themselves, has a sideblog for this specific fan-fiction and will be posting art, moodboards, etc., that better correlate to their story.
𝔒𝔫 𝔱𝔬 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔧𝔲𝔦𝔠𝔶 𝔡𝔢𝔱𝔞𝔦𝔩𝔰~
I think it's no secret that Assassin's Creed was a huge point of reference while conjuring up this concept. From the gear/weapons to the heavy cloak, to the hood, this design has AC written all over it!
Another prominent inspiration was Lord of the Rings (LotR). The weapons especially have a more elvish design to them in comparison to period-accurate weaponry.
With that being said, HTTYD has a very unique art style and while, yes, it does reference clothing and gearing that's accurate to the era it's supposed to take place in (well, minus some of the Viking helmets), it tends to get repetitive.
My art leans towards realism while keeping some "cartoonish" elements such as visible lineart and cel shading. So, with all my references taken into account, this is my final design for PoA's FMC.

The Question of the Rings: What do they do? A Brief and Humble History
Tumblr media
Season 2 has been a hive of fascinating interpretations. Annatar's manipulations, Celebrimbor's crafts, or the stranger's tension between mastery and service, there is almost no end to the ways in which the series has taken on fundamental aspects of the lore.
But one element I've been rather intrigued by is the way the series will display its title subject matter: the power of the rings. Here, I would like to take a turn discussing the Elven Rings specifically. And hopefully I can take a turn at the other sets (men, dwarves, and Sauron's later). There is an answer that stays true to the original intention, which they have seemingly held true to in the series as well,- the rings provide stasis of life.
In the third age, Elves no longer dot and populate the trees, hills, and mountains of Middle-earth. In fact, there are seemingly only four elven realms left, Rivendell, Lothlorian, Mirkwood, and the Grey Havens. Of these, only Mirkwood is not under the direct power of an Elven Ring at any given time.
Mirkwood's king, Thranduil, is unique in this roster as being the only king of an elvish land never under the stasis of a ring. But it is important to also note that his realm is the only realm that is shrinking, beset on all sides by the darkness of the forest, the invasion of the spiderlings, and even Necromancers. Even if the necromancer in question was Sauron (and there is plenty of evidence to suggest it was, but nothing definitive so far as I'm aware), the Sindarin king is a far cry from his powerful former counterpart, Thingol, whose wife was a maiar with the powers of protection. Thranduil's kingdom isn't just shrinking though, it is also the last of the original holdouts.
Although Thranduil and his son Legolas are Sindarin, those people who went towards the Valar but never made it to the sea, they rule over Silvans, those elves who stayed in their forests refusing the call of Valinor. They are hermits, whose way of life is quickly fading. They are considered the least in grandeur and wisdom of all elves (my sincerest apologies to Arondir and Tauriel, I love you both and dearly).
Tumblr media
So why is it that the realm of Mirkwood is struggling to stay afloat while the other three elven strongholds thrive?
Indeed, the rings of power have the power to maintain. Think of the trees of Lothlorian, which have all faded and died in all other parts of Middle-earth (minus the seedling which Samwise plants in the shire, of course). Think of the last homely house of Elrond, right at the foot of mountains filled with goblins and wargs, yet not even the Witch-King of Angmar may enter it.
At this point, some of my fellow Enthusiasts might point out that in the third age, the third ring of power no longer resides in the Grey Havens. Old Círdan gave his ring away...
Tumblr media
They are correct, of course. The last of the Elven rings, Narya, lies hidden away, upon the finger of a wandering Maiar trapped in the body of an old man. An istari, once known as Olórin, better known to the elves as Mithrandir, and to the Dwarves as Tharkûn, but to good hobbits and men as Gandalf.
So how does the Grey Havens fit into the stasis field? It is not a kingdom, but a doorway, one in which the Valar have opened and maintained, to bring the elves home to Valinor. Only those under the powers of the rings and the holdouts, the Silvans, are left. But the Valar maintain that opened gate. The Haven is not a permanent residence, but a path towards the home of all Elves.
Which at last leads to the question: if Gandalf has the ring Narya and its power is one of life and stasis, how is he using it? I suspect Rings of Power may yet show us. But if they do not, I would posit that his wanderings are a clue. The great elven lords of the third age (Elrond, Galadriel, and Círdan) are maintaining their realms for very different reasons. Unlike the others, Galadriel cannot leave for Valinor, for her test is not yet finished (she must prove that she is willing to give up power). Círdan is maintaining the Havens until all of the elves leave, and Elrond seems to be acting as historian and tour-guide to those passing to Valinor.
But Gandalf's use of the ring seems to be less regional. That is, by traveling, he spreads the Ring's influence throughout Middle-earth. My speculation here (and in that I mean that this is where personal opinion is treading new ground) is that the Gandalf uses the Ring to bring life and prosperity wherever he travels, be it as Gandalf to the Hobbits and Cities of Men, as Mithrandir to the Elven Havens and elvish realms, or as Tharkûn to the Dwarven halls under mountains.
It is worth noting that the Elven Rings have been rumored glimpses of martial power, such as when the aforementioned 9 wraiths are halted at the border of Imládris. It is presumed that it is the powers of the Ring that kept them at bay. But with the exception of the video game (Shadow of Mordor), I am not familiar with any other attempts to show the rings as martial weapons. Not to say they don't exist.
It will be interesting to see where the Rings of Power series takes the power of the rings. I hope this was helpful and/or at least interesting!

Weekly Brew #1 Baru, Wurmspeaker Commander Deck
The Wurms are Coming!
This week's randomly selected commander is: Baru, Wurmspeaker!  Printed first (and only) in Dominaria United Commander, Baru is a simple commander with a simple plan. Wurms! Wurms are the plan.  With him at the helm, this deck is sure to rain wurmy wrath down on your foes!
FULL DECKLIST
GENERAL GAME PLAN
As I said previously, this Baru deck is very straightforward. Play big wurms for as little as possible, and swing them at face until you win! Not enough wurms? Wurmquake, Crush of Wurms, Wurmcalling, Sandwurm Convergence and even Baru can help you generate plenty of wurms! Wurms not big enough? Caged Sun,  Unnatural Growth, Sylvan Anthem, and similar cards add constant boosts! Having trouble casting the wurms? A fair amount of reduction and ramp has been splashed throughout the deck in order to get you to your wurms faster!
RAMP AND REDUCTION
A fair number of your wurms (read:almost all of them) are a little on the pricy side, so ramp and cost reduction are a must have. We have our usual suspects, with Emerald Medallion and Rhonas’s Monument providing a decent reduction to all your spells. Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma provides a minus 2 to the cost of 28 creatures out of the 39 in the deck. If you’re looking for true ramp, this list uses some pretty standard stuff for it. We hit the usual Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Thran Dynamo, and Moss Diamond for artifacts, while throwing in a Caged Sun for good measure.  As far as creatures go, you’ll see the typical Fyndhorn Elves type cards, as well as Sakura Tribe Elder  and Karametra’s Acolyte. If those don't push enough, cards like Cultivate, Explore, and Rampant Growth have been slotted in as well (plus a few more)
CHEATING INTO PLAY
If the ramp simply isn’t enough, a number of cards in the deck will allow you to cheat your massive wurms in for a much smaller cost.  Monster Manual and Elvish Piper allow you to repeatedly play a much bigger creature for only 1 or 2 mana, and Mosswort Bridge allows you to slot away a card to cast later, provided you have enough power (you probably should have enough power with a deck like this).
GENERAL VALUE
This deck has a lot of big, expensive creatures. Garruk’s Uprising and Colossal Majesty take advantage of this to keep your hand full as much as they can. The aforementioned Mosswort Bridge and Fight Rigging take advantage of the massive creatures to try and activate their abilities as quickly as possible. Runadi, Behemoth Crawler and Goreclaw take advantage of their high power to boost them even further beyond!  Since most of the deck is green, a handful of cards are designed to take advantage of that as well. Wurm’s Tooth gives you small lifegain for each spell you cast, and Caged Sun and Sylvan Anthem pump (almost) every creature you control!
OTHER CARDS OF NOTE
Defiler of Vigor provides a handy decrease in green costs, while also pumping the full field when you cast your spells. Panglacial Wurm can be cast off the numerous “search your library for a land” spells for a fun surprise. Dirtcowl Wurm gets bigger every time an opponent has the audacity to try and play a land while Deathcoil Wurm (try not to get them mixed up) gets to totally ignore the fact that creatures are blocking it. Sifter Wurm, Ravenous Lindwurm, Pelakka Wurm, Bookwurm and Bramblewurm all provide some lifegain, with Voracious Wurm getting nice and fat off them if you can cast them in the same turn. Worldspine Worm slows down mill a smidgeon, and Elderscale Wurm will help keep you from dying to (most) combat damage. Having trouble closing out the game? Bellowing Tangleworm makes it harder to block your massive creatures, just in case trample isn't doing enough, and Unnatural Growth doubles the size of your already massive wurms.
FINAL NOTES AND CONSIDERABLE CARDS
Baru was selected at random using a complicated method (wheel spins and random number generators). This deck is built using primarily my own knowledge of cards + my raw scryfall ability. Combining these factors with the attempted $150 budget, there are likely a number of cards not in here that should be, due to budget concerns, my own incompetence, or my failure to understand a mechanic/interaction. I ask that you give me some grace, as I learn more about magic and how to better build decks. This deck’s raw power is not the highest, but I can’t say I'm too surprised. Combining the budget with an odd tribe, I really can’t say I was expecting much better. If you decide you need better lands, Three Tree City and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx can slot in quite well over any old forest. Garruk, Primal Hunter can ult for a large number of wurm tokens if you are inclined to use him. Last March of the Ents and The Great Henge are fantastic options for the deck if you are less budget inclined then I am.  Heroic Intervention is good to slot in for protection, as are other fogs and fog likes. Better and more ramp can obviously also be done, once again for a higher budget. If you feel any worms are not working, or that you need more, there are a LARGE number of them that could easily be considered, with some being notably better than others (looking at YOU Mungha Wurm).

making maps for A Fire Shall Be Woken
it's been a few weeks since I posted an update on my current bookbinding project and that is because I was briefly possessed by the ghost of Christopher Tolkien and decided we needed fold out maps. And, of course, I couldn't find any maps on the internet that suited so...................why not hand draw them? this is reasonable, right?
First I made a map of Eriador (the region to the west of the Misty Mountains), starting with a traced version of Karen Wynn Fonstad's map from The Atlas of Middle Earth. Her map was lovely, but the lettering didn't match the uncial lettering I'm using & I really wanted full color. there were probably easier ways to get a full color map and redo the labels than redrawing the whole damn thing but I am not known for doing things the easy way. I tried to use primarily elvish names for places where available, since that would be how both POV characters refer to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Karen Fonstad's original on the left, my version on the right)
The whole thing was done with a Nikko G nib dip pen, minus the Eriador label which was a brauss caligraphy nib in 1.5 mm. Most of the colors are watercolors that I diluted & mixed with a little gum arabic to prevent feathering. The black is cheapo speedball india ink.
It's hopefully not *too* obvious in the final version that several sections of the map were redone on a second sheet and spliced together, especially the area around Isengard and Imladris, where I misinterpreted rivers and roads before consulting the Arda Encyclopedia (shoutout to fans who love cataloging information y'all are the best)
The frame is based on a Mucha design that @zhalfirin pointed me towards and felt very fitting.
I finished that map last week and was very happy with it for about two days before I started thinking....oh, but what about the back of the book? What if we had another map for the back of the book? What if we made a map of Rivendell?

Starting the slow, painful process of rewriting older snippets of mine with fixed edits, more revisions and some of them just...completely reworking! anyways here’s Maedhros in Angband not having a good time. I chose this one because I have a sequel in the works!
See the illustration here!!
Morgoth has stolen Fëanor’s father, his Silmarils and now, his eldest son and heir
CW: blanket Angband warning for captivity, restraints and Morgoth (and Gothmog) existing, humiliation/on display/made a trophy, dehumanizing language
Angband world building and complex trauma masterlist
author’s note: I know I have talked about this on like fifty other posts so I’ll try to make this quick but I just…I think a lot about Maedhros being a trophy to Melkor in a way akin to the Silmarils and..
The elf held its head high even as it was pulled forward by a chain connected to the collar around its neck. Despite the humiliated anger that burned on his face, the wretch still clearly considered himself as possessing of dignity, perhaps even nobility. Gothmog wondered if he should place a wager with one of the captains as he did on occasion ; how long until the little king abandoned his attempt at pride, until their master broke His new trophy. True this brat was of the fallen king’s brood but none of the Eldar could survive their master’s attention or fury with their mind intact, let alone the arrogance it was said the late Fëanáro saw fit to pass to his offspring. But no matter. Gothmog knew his master would be far more satisfied ruining the spitfire eldest son of his old Enemy rather than something sniveling and already broken. Gothmog knew this from experience and he looked forward to the day his lord paraded the insolent Noldo before them only minus his insolence.
The task of capturing Nelyafinwë alive had been a difficult one; not the capturing, once the other Noldor were slain and the high king was overwhelmed by Gothmog’s host, it had been easy enough to force the brat to his knees and bind him. No, it had been the alive aspect that had been the challenge.
Perhaps it should have been expected from the heir of Curufinwë but being rendered practically immobile by the chains and two huge orcish captains on either side had done almost nothing to quell the Noldo’s fire. He had kicked, thrashed, screamed insults and curses in that high Elvish tongue that Gothmog so hated… Most captives would find themselves dead should they have caused so much trouble merely to be transported or at the very least knocked senseless. But no. Lord Melkor had ordered that the king be brought to His feet alive and with no limiting injuries.
Gothmog was lucky that they had managed to subdue him with little more than some bruises as lasting evidence by the time they reached the fortress (where the fury did not quell either even upon being thrown to the foot of the throne of the boy’s bitter Foe) Gothmog had been ready to whip the wretched brat until he was hoarse from screaming. He still hoped he would be given this privilege in the future.
There was a general show of amusement and appreciation from the watching generals as Lord Melkor pulled His prize along behind Him. The Vala had not yet indicated to His audience whether there was a further purpose to this display or merely for its own sake. Gothmog would enjoy it either way, if only because the elf wouldn’t.
The more shrewd, and more cruel, among them would have noticed that the decorative pin bearing the crest of the Noldo’s House remained intact above his bare stomach. The Balrog captain recognized it from the battle the thrall’s father perished in. The irony was a nice touch from their Master. And at the moment He looked happier than many had ever seen Him in some time. Certainly since He had returned from the land of His hated kin The eyes of the Vala were glittering and there was a powerful aura around Him, throbbing through the small group of soldiers that He had ordered to gather there.
Melkor paused with an air of mock thoughtfulness and then the elf was shoved suddenly into their midst. The balrog Captain was impressed that it was still standing. This close, he could see it looked utterly worse for ware. True, he hadn’t looked very good when him and his host had dragged it from the bloodstained grove where he had been ordered to meet the small group of Noldor lead by their king. The king who was now swaying so pathetically on his cut feet
“Look,” the Vala says softly and everyone freezes, “But do not dare to touch. Not until I give My word.” He smiles blandly at them. Even among His own side, it is a deeply unpleasant thing.
“Worry not. It has been given a dose of lhong water. Its claws trimmed, its wings clipped. Though it might try, it can offer you no trouble. For the moment at least, he is docile.” A few of the soldiers teeter a bit, clearly unsure whether to laugh or feel offended at the insinuation that the bound and blindfolded elf could have ever posed a threat to them.
“Of course, this is..or was…a youthful and strong warrior,” Melkor continued as the elf’s ears perked up, perhaps he was coming back to himself from the dazed state he had been brought in with. though of course, the general guessed, the Noldo would have no idea where he had come back to himself, blindfolded and barefoot in the middle of enemy soldiers, “He is more amusing when he can act freely but now is not the time for a demonstration.“ The elf was pushed from their midst back towards the clear path through the hall. The Vala pulled upon the chain leash to urge him forward several paces.
Towards the end of the hall Melkor stopped abruptly and there was renewed laughter from the onlookers as the jerking of the chains nearly sent the Noldor king to his knees. The balrog captain sneered as he caught sight of the fury and humiliation on the prisoner’s face as he righted himself again, only to be pulled forward as Melkor made his way to the Throne.
There was a thrill of anticipation in the hall. None present expected the prisoner kneel without a fight and indeed, though the words the Vala spoke were too soft for most to here, and though they seemed to cause the elf to blanch, Nelyafinwë still shook his head stoutly. The dim light of the torches made it appear as though it was a shadow that struck the boy’s face, sending him toppling to the ground. Two guards were beckoned forward to constrain him as Melkor sat, watching the struggle idly. The elf was forced to the ground, a large orcish hand holding his head down while the other guard fixed the manacles on his wrists and ankles. The Noldo continued to thrash and scream until  Dark Lord’s booted foot pressed ominously to his forehead.
“Shall we resume?” when Melkor in His terrible, rumbling voice spoke it was with gravity that seeped into the very stone that upheld the fortress. The Silmarils upon His crown illuminated the stark hatred and fear on the fallen king’s bloodied face.
As always please feel free to send Angband prompts :) About Maedhros or anyone!
First Author’s note: I’m thinking of having Melkor hold a more private viewing session for his higher ups too…
Second Author’s note: Gothmog gets some revenge (or at least tries to) for how difficult of a captive Maedhros was here Also feel free to check out my post about the hierarchies of Angband and the various trajectories of the prisoners

formal, hair, and alternate for the character design questions!
Ty for the ask! Doing this for Tav'Lyn...
Link to the ask here!
formal: What's your OC's formal look? Do they like dressing up? Do they have different looks for different occasions?
She does love dressing up. Since she is from the 3rd Drow house of Menzobarranzen she is used to expensive fabrics, jewels...the whole works. She would probably look grandiose compared to surface standards but it's what she's used to.
I am an absolute sucker for the intricate Drow hairstyles the nobles wear. They are outlandish and usually incorporate headpieces with them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though she now lives on the surface, for a formal event, Tav'Lyn would still go all out with this type of look (minus the spider motifs).
hair: How does your OC wear their hair? Does it have some kind of meaning?
She keeps her hair long in the drow/elvish custom. While in formal situations like those mentioned above, she would go for something intricate, in her day-to-day life she is quite relaxed with her hair. Keeping it either in a messy bun or a half-up hairstyle. This is a deliberate choice since she is choosing to be more relaxed and less structured in her life versus when she was in Menzobarranzen.
alternate: What would your OC's alternate universe look be? If they're a fantasy character, what's their modern look? If they're sci-fi, what's their fantasy look? What AU would you want to see your OC in, and how would they dress themself? Bonus: Prompt an AU!
Hmm...her modern look...hard to answer... I am keeping everything about her the same except for the clothing choices....something very casual like jeans and a t-shirt. That is because she is someone who is actively rebelling against a structured/rigid society. Someone who had to dress in a particular way for so long (priestess robes) that she really just doesn't want to think about it anymore.

Growing up with a western view of Elves in popular media (Like in LOTR and The Hobbit or currently, The Witcher) I saw elves as reserved, and not really liking humans (or maybe that's just how I interpreted things idk). Brushing up on my own cultures view on elves or elvish type creatures, they are treated far better in comparison.
(more under the cut)
Within shared folklore (between Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei), Orang Bunian (translated into "hidden people" or "whistling people) are known to be invisible to most normal people, and can only be seen by people with "spiritual sight", kinda like modern day ghost lore. Said to live in the deep forests and mountains of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo, away from most human contact, but near human communities (even living in their homes). They are known to be benevolent, usually befriending humans and helping bomoh (which is kinda like a witch doctor). They also have magic, humans usually do some rituals or give offerings when crossing or trespassing on their land.
There are two depictions of them, the more traditional one is that they are beautiful, nearly identical to humans (minus a philtrum on some accounts) and are dressed in ancient southeast asian style clothes. The other, more modern depiction, is a more high fantasy elf. The kind you usually see in fandom and games.
So in comparison to how elves are treated in popular media (at least the ones I see, like The Witcher, Dragon Age: Absolution, etc), Orang Bunian are treated with far more respect and reverence in some cases. Human men are even known to marry Bunian women, and be whisked away for years. Like, these are not the elves I grew up seeing (I never watched Magika unfortunately). It's so interesting how differently creatures like these are treated in different places.
It's not like good creatures are the norm here, I grew up never playing hide and seek past dusk because I'd be kidnapped by the Hantu Tetek (titties ghost, kinda terrifying if you read about how it's supposed to look like). I grew on things like Hantu Raya, Pocong and other horrifying stories. Then Orang Bunian come along, their only downside is whisking people away sometimes, and because time works differently, they come out of their happy fun time after years and years, in which the people they knew have already died.
Orang Bunian are such fun to get into. I should put more Malaysian folklore into my content and self insert stuff.

Lord of the Rings Horse Ranking Tier
Tumblr media
S-Tier:
Fatty Lumpkin. Tom Bombadil’s horse. This speaks for itself, and I will hear no debate.
A-Tier:
Wise-Nose. One of Merry’s five ponies. Descriptive name and probably good at sniffing out food. I know what I’m getting with this horse.
Asfoloth: Because the line “Noro lim Asfaloth” always gives me the shivers. (“Ride fast" in Elvish.) Also kind of sounds like ass-fall-off, so my bad Elvish translation is “ride until your ass falls off.”
Nahar. Blinding white horse of a literal god (Oromë the Vala). Apparently this horse was the first one to notice that the elves had woken up and tipped off Oromë. Not a bad biography for a horse.
Rochallor. Heroic horse of Elven-king Fingolfin. Actually stayed while Fingolfin challenged Morgoth to a duel, and stayed until Fingolfin died of his wounds. Attacked by wolves but ran swiftly home, where his heart gave out. You wish you were as metal at this horse.
Sharp-Ears. One of Merry’s five ponies. The safety warning about handling the ears is appreciated.
Shadowfax. Lord of the Mearas, it was said that no man could tame him, and he wouldn’t take a bridle or saddle, so minus some points for general utility. Luckily he was a bro to Gandalf, could understand speech and ran faster than all horses in Middle Earth. Gandalf took him to Valinor.
B-Tier:
Bill the Pony. Loses points for name originality (come on Samwise!), but gains some points back for being a memorable horse that somehow survives finding its way home from Moria despite being released and not getting eaten by the Watcher in the Water and crossing lands teeming with orcs.
Brego. A horse in the movies, but not in the books. Saves Aragorn by waking him up with horse kisses and carting him back to safety. Viggo Mortensen bought the horse after the movies.
C-Tier:
Roheryn. Aragorn’s personal horse, a gift from Arwen. That’s sweet, but it sounds too much like Rohirrim, and they might have to sue the horse for copyright infringement.
Bumpkin. One of Merry’s five ponies. You know, you’re just trying to copy Fatty Lumpkin, without the fat. We can see right through that. Bonus points for being one of Merry’s ponies.
Snowmane. Theoden King’s horse. Unfortunately got shot, fell, and crushed Theoden, so minus some points for involvement in regicide. Also sounds like a cat’s name TBH.
D-Tier:
Firefoot. Eomer’s horse. Sounds kind of metal, but also sounds like some kind of disease that horses in Middle Earth get.
Felaróf. First of the Mearas. Reportedly as intelligent as any human and could understand the speech of Men. Yet somehow this is what he decides to choose for a name, so how smart is he really?
Arod: A horse gifted to Legolas from the Riders of Rohan (so you know he did not look in its mouth, but maybe kind of wanted to…)
E-Tier
Hasufel. Aragorn’s horse gifted from the Riders of Rohan, but is only a placeholder horse until Aragorn gets his original horse back. Tough luck horsey.
F-Tier:
Stybba. Loaned to Merry from Theoden King, after the Battle of the Hornburg, this pony was better suited to rough terrain, and was too slow to keep up with the Rohirrim, so a bit of a raw deal for ole’ Stybba.
Windfola. Éowyn’s horse at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, which ran away when the Witch King of Angmar showed up. Come on buddy, I know you are kind of helping to fulfill prophesy and all, but be a bit more brave like Rochallor.
Obligatory shout out to:

A Braid and Two Promises (Bofur x Reader)
Main Masterlist The Hobbit/LOTR Masterlist
Summary: After a close call Bofur decides that now is the time to act on his feelings for you.
A/N: This is my First Hobbit Request! Please Feel free to send any! I am so happy with this work thank you random Anon for requesting # 5 on my promptlist!
Tumblr media
Rivendell was a surprising to see. Gandalf really pulled a fast one and Thorin was not happy. You begin to travel across a bridge that has a deep chasm below and through the archway. Once in the center you are greeted with a brunet elf.
“Ai Mithrandil.” (I couldn’t find a way to spell it) “India!” Gandalf says with a smile. As this greeting takes place you look at your uneasy dwarf friends. they are whispering amongst themselves and sizing up the Elvish guards as well as the one speaking to Gandalf now. As you look between the two you feel someone slide next to you. You look down to see a big brown hat and a bown leather jacket.
“Hello Bofur.” You say with a smile. “How’d you reckon this place be hm?” He whispers to you and you sigh.
“I wouldn’t know. I haven’t been here before.” You say.
Bofurs eyes seem to widen and his pale face begins to turn red with a blush. He looks down and away. Before you get to question there is a sudden shout from Thorin. “Close ranks!” He shouts.
You suddenly find yourself as well as Bilbo being shoved to the middle of the company. You feel a protective arm at your hip and look down to see Bofurs hand resting upon it. You know it is out of protection so you don’t think of it as malicious intent. Though you are a thousand percent without any doubt that Bofur and anyone in this company is capable of doing such thing.
Horses begin a two layer circle around all of you. You see one Elf in particular wearing Red armor which is different then the rest.
“Gandalf!” He exclaims.
You can only assume that this is Lord Elrond. They speak in Elvish tongue for a time. You understand it but feign ignorance as to not worry the company.
“Strange for Orcs to come so close to our borders...” Elrond looks to Gandalf and then to the company.
“Something or someone has drawn them near.” Gandalf responds almost immediately.
“Ah, That may have been us.” Gandalf says.
Lord Elrond turns toward the company as Thorin steps forward.
“Welcome Thorin, Son of Thrain.” He says with a slight smile.
“I do not believe we have met.” Thorin says skeptically.
“You have your grandfather bearing. I knew Thoror when he ruled under the mountain.” Elrond  laments.
“He made no mention of you.” Thorin bites
Elrond pauses before speaking. You stifle a giggle as Elrond makes his kind words sound like an insult. Gloin seems to take the bait as he raises a voice in saying. “Does he offer us an insult!”
Gandalf sighs as he says. “No Gloin he is offering you food.”
Minus you and Bilbo the rest lean into each other and begin to whisper. Gloin turns and nods toward the Elf which leads Lord Elrond to go up the stairs with the company and you in tow.
It has been a while since everyone has been allowed to bathe and eat so they do just that. You decided to take your time with a bath so you are out later then everyone else. You decided to wear a gown that Lord Elrond so graciously gave you - Though you know you will be leaving soon enough - As you step out everyone stills and looks in your direction.
“I almost forgot you were a woman under all those mens clothes you wear!” Fili says with a laugh.
Your face flushes with embarrassment but you hear a hard thud and look over to see Fili holding his head with Bofur behind him. You decide to ignore and sit at one of the farther tables. Though you mainly eat meat you didn’t mind the greens on your plate. You knew of the Elves choice in food. You feel someone sit next to you.
“Don’t listen to the lass they don’ know what their talkin’ about.” You hear Bofur say.
“Thank you my friend... I know it is all in good fun, but it is nice to look and feel beautiful sometimes...” You say.
Bofur seems to deflate slightly at your statement. “Yer beautiful all the time Y/N.” He says with a smile.
This causes you to blush this time out of bashfulness. “Thank you Bofur.” You say with a smile.
You suddenly feel him cup your cheek. His thumb runs over a small cut on your cheek.
“How ya feelin’? Took a nasty fall... Nearly lost ya...” He says sadly.
“I’m fine... I had a handsome dwarf come to my rescue.” You say as you begin to remember the events of today.
“This way!” Gandalf exclaims as you rush between boulders.
Radagast the Brown has offered himself as a distraction, but unfortunately it only lasted so long. The sounds of death from a pack mate has caused the rest of the Orc hunting party to follow. Now you are running toward a big boulder. As you were running however you trip on a rock causing you to fall and skid your palms along the rocky ground. You feel the rush of blood enter the wounds before exiting. You feel small drips of blood trail down your cheek. You reach and touch it to see that there is indeed blood.
You go to stand up only for feel a kick to your side. You yelp in pain as you are suddenly tossed on to your back. You look up to see the hideous Orc scum. He is holding a spear. You pulls his arm back to strike.
“NO!”
You hear someone cry and a war hammer is meshed to the Orcs face. You see the back of Bofurs brown jacket. There was a cry of pain from the Orc as it is knocked to the ground. There is one final grunt from Bofur as he smashes the Orcs head it. Bofur immediately turns to you and reaches a hand out to you. You grab it and he hoists you up and you both run for the hole in the ground.
Without uncupping your cheek he reaches for one of your hands and rubs his thumb along the bandages. You can see that he is beginning to get into his own head. You go to speak but he cuts you off.
“Can I braid your hair?” He asks with hope in his raised voice.
“W-what? Are you sure? You kn-” “I know what it means  amrâl (Love).” He says.
“In any tradition hair is very important. I want to use this as a sign of faith, fate, and... something more if you wish.” He says in a hushed tone.
“Bofur...” You place a hand over his which is on your cheek.
“I would love it... Would this be a courting braid?” You ask as your face seems to be getting more red by the second.
“I-If ya will have me it is.” Bofur says who has an equally red face.
You smile with a nod and turn around with your back facing him. You here him shuffling and muttering to himself.
“Where is that bloody bru-” He is cut off with a thud.
You hear him grunt as you here slight chuckles from behind you. What you didn’t see was that Kili threw a brush into Bofurs head as the rest of the Company chuckles.
You feel him start at the bottom of your hair with the brush. He is muttering to himself some more. “I... I will say I am not very good at braidin’ hair...” He says.”
“I will love it either way...” You say with a smile.
Then there is silence. The light tugs on your hair as he takes the three stands and overlaps them.
“What are you thinking Bofur? I can hear it.” You say lightly.
Bofur chokes slightly. “I... I was thinking that... Maybe when we reclaim Erebor. I will make a bead for ya. To ya know. Go in yer hair?”
“You wouldn’t have to Bo...”
“How else would I be able to braid yer hair when we wed?”
“W-What!” You exclaim.
“Yes. By the time we reclaim Erebor I plan on marrying ya. This braid will be a promise to that.” You stay silent for a moment until he is done.
You turn to him and cup his cheek. “Well know now that when this is all over, my answer will be yes.” You say breathlessly before placing a kiss on his cheek.
You were surprised blood wasn’t leaking out of his pores with how red his face was.
“W-Well get some sleep Lass. We leave early.” He says with a whisper before scurrying away.
You giggle and wave to him. You find yourself unable to sleep that night which may curse you in the morning, but you know in the end it would be worth it.

Before she was Queen, (Y/n) was perhaps the best soldier (minus the King and his family), she led the Guard as well as the armed forces of their Lord to victory. Her skill was unmatched, her aim unwavering and her swordsmanship rivalling that of the King himself. Orcs shivered at her name, Goblins ran back into their mountains, and enemy Kingdoms were more likely to bow before her than battle. Perhaps that is an exaggeration, but there are always elements of truth in the legend.
People were not shocked when the King of the Woodland realm was entranced by her - most were and even Dwarves found themselves astounded by her beauty; the people of Middle Earth, however, were further shocked upon the discovery that she returned his feelings. Celebrations lasted for weeks, and the people assumed more would follow soon after a few months in their marriage. Yet, none did.
This is perhaps what has led to the present.
~~~~~~~~~~~~Please do not copy ~~~~~~~~~~~~
"You will not fight," the King calmly states, causing the hair on the back of her neck to dance. He does not look away from her, giving her the tantalising gaze reserved for those he trades with, especially Dwarfs. She does not break the eye contact, their tidy chambers silent around them.
"Yes, I will."
There's a pause before he chuckles eerily, taking a step forward as he begins to circle her, a familiar tactic of his with enemies, "you are a Queen." He takes in the flowers weaved into her hair and the braids that remove hair from falling to her face, he takes in her gleaming silver gown with stars intricately etched on and he takes in her weapon less body, "you are not even prepared for war, Nin Meleth."
Although her shoulders shiver for a split second, she does not weaken, her eyes now fixated on the shut door in front of them, settling on him as her husband finally comes to a stop, back in his original place, she must withhold a scoff as she takes in his own appearance, he wears a matching silver robe, and his crown. "Neither are you, my lord."
Once again, there is a pause before her King chuckles again, and he slowly, carefully reaches into his robe to pull out a single, Elvish dagger, "this is but one I have on my person."
"I may have several weapons on me, and you would not be wiser," her eyes raise to meet his, the wild smile of her Guard days reappearing on her face, making the King frown, his gaze hardening as he effortlessly slithers the dagger back into its place.
"You have grown too comfortable with your life, my Queen," he speaks in Sindarin, raising a gentle hand to the circlet on her head, which is fixated in place by those flowers, "my (Y/n) would have never worn such beautiful pieces in her hair when she was the mere head of the guard."
She cannot deny that those words stung they cause her to gasp out slightly, which is enough to shake the foolish King out of his stupor, his jaw-dropping slightly as his eyes sharply shift to meet her own again, "Nin Meleth -."
"Enough!" She harshly says, her voice so stern and powerful that it could rival his, the true voice of a Queen. She pushes his hand away and fixes her posture, standing tall, "I may have not been so lucky to afford such delicacies, nor had the time to wear my best as often as you, but that is simply because whilst you attempted to fit into the shoes of a King, after being the Crown Prince for so long, I was protecting our borders, putting effort into creating peace."
He begins to look guilty, until she mentions his Kingship and peace, as he effortlessly slips into Sindarin, "how dare you, I am the one who has to engage in countless diplomacy meetings, I have led my armies into battle, and won, I have done countless things that you cannot imagine." He steps closer to her, leaning down to her ear, "I am your King." He enunciates each word, smirking softly to himself as he knows what reaction to expect, "your duty is to do as I say."
Opposite to the usual reaction of hers, her shoulders tense at his proximity, and she sharply steps back, responding in Sindarin, "my duty is to the people and to my Guard."
He tilts his head, watching her, devoid of emotions, and raises a brow.
Gaze unwavering, she rips the silver circlet from her head, many of the flowers alongside it, revealing the braids beneath and she throws it to the side, it clangs on the floor so loud that it shakes the passages and halls closest, their people freezing upon the sound.
"Take my crown," she steps forward, her gaze forming into a glare, with the stature of a Queen, The Queen of the Woodland Realm, "for I would rather lose it than hide in these halls like a pathetic goblin, or like you, Hîr vuin." She does not wait for an answer, instead choosing to step past her husband, heading to the door, which she makes no haste in pulling open.
His posture straightens, his head jostling back in shock, and he swerves on his heels "and what if you are with child?" These are the celebrations that the people spoke of, expecting heirs.
She halts, her Westron unwavering, "than their mother will be a Warrior, rather than a Princess."
The servants were not surprised when asked to set up the Queen's chambers, for you would have had to be as deaf as a Dwarf to not hear at least some of their conversation, certainly, the Circlet hitting the stone flooring. The King did not agree with this, for her chambers would be at the other side of the Wing, but he was not going to show his discomfort, nor his disagreement.
That was not the end of the Queen's actions that riled him. Although the Queen had officially stopped being the head of the Guard, that did not mean they stopped seeing her as so and even the current captain referred to himself as a form of co-captaincy, so when she asked to train with them, even though she had not meant for it to, things quickly settled into how they were before.
Thranduil watched every move she made, slinking in the shadows, from the balcony, and even in the training sessions himself, making sure that no one would harm a hair on his Lady's head.
To spite him, (Y/n) stopped wearing his gifts, settling back into her green tunic and brown trousers, stomping over to meals in such attire, always glaring at him from across the table, never uttering a word. Yet, she spoke to everyone else, wrote to everyone else also, but never uttering a slight sign of affection to her King.
It was driving Thranduil mad.
Of course, he did not attempt to talk to her either, only speaking when she crossed the line.
"No."
She ignores him, not moving her bow from the dinner table. She would not have done it previously due to manners, but it no longer mattered.
She slumps into her seat, hair wild with leaves sticking out from recent patrol, a darker shade for a tunic today, her leather chest plate still on, "I deserve a reward, do you not think," she thanks the servant that serves her some salad, before fixating her gaze back on her King's, "after all, I have been working so hard."
"By putting our child's life at risk."
The Servants serving each freeze, the air in the room turns cold, and the Queen shifts herself into a Kinglier posture.
"How dare you."
The servants step away from the table, slowly, to not catch the eye of either of them, and the guard’s glance at each other.
The King does not look ashamed and leans back into his seat, plopping a grape into his mouth, "it is true."
"Tell me, my lord, have I engaged in hand-to-hand combat?"
He pauses, "no."
"Tell me, my lord, have I trained with swords with another."
He pauses again, "no."
"Correct," she raises her goblet of cranberry juice to her lips, taking a tantalisingly long sip before placing it back down, licking my lips, "I have only demonstrated the movements, but I have not engaged in-person versus person."
"Yes, but -"
"Then, tell me, my lord, have I been drinking alcohol or going on unnecessary journey's."
"No," he makes no haste in continuing, cutting his wife off, "but you are still putting them at risk."
She scoffs and suddenly stands, knocking the table slightly, and pushing her chair against the floor, creating large squeaking noises, making many winces around her.
"My last cycle was three weeks ago, and we simply did it once before you decided to be insensitive and foolish, I believe it to be unlikely I am with child, you imbecile."
She turns on her heels, beginning to walk away, ignoring how her husband immediately stands, taking a few steps so that the table is no longer in his way, but she pays no heed.
"How dare you!"
"Mîbo orch!"
As she suspected, she was yet to be with child, and the King was informed, having ordered a servant to inform him if blood ever stained her satin sheets.
This did not stop (Y/n), who quickly settled back into her life before marriage, going on dangerous patrols, scouting out possible threats on the land surrounding them and treating the King as a King, rather than her husband.
Elves are incredibly patient, and this spat went on for several months, the only comfort being the gazes the pair secretly gave the other when they were not looking, for when they did converse, arguments always followed.
 "I assure you, my lord, I will fulfil my duties as a Queen," she calmly states, treating him as she did before courting. The two are currently in the main hall, in front of their thrones, hers which hadn't been occupied in quite some time. Today, she wears several braids joined together so that her hair is not half up-half down, but more a quarter up, and three quarters down: with silver tunic and brown trousers. He wears his crown and the usual attire of light robe and dark trousers. She had come to report on their patrols, the official captain having faked discomfort to get the two to forgive, for all the people could feel it, as the days got darker, the air harder to breathe and the constant air of sadness surrounded the lands, the trees were drooping, and the paths are becoming overgrown.
"Then why have you not been in my chambers for so long."
"I beg your pardon?" She scoffs, the King providing her with the known gaze of his, which is void of all emotion.
"You bare me no glance, no-touch -"
"For you are unworthy of my attention, my lord, with all due respect," she speaks so calmly, and it is as if a knife goes through Thranduil, his gaze faltering, as well as his posture, but only for a millisecond.
Still, she notices, and guilt grips at (Y/n's) heart as she goes to take a gentle step forward. He raises a hand in dismissal, halting her in her steps.
"If my presence is so unwanted then let me rid you of it."
"My lord -"
He does not listen, ignoring her as he makes his way out, deciding today would be a good day for a private patrol of the furthest ends of their land.
"I was worried for you, Nin Meleth."
The King freezes, bow still in hand, not having noticed the presence before resuming his motions, gently placing his Bow on the rack. He wears a dark grey tunic, with brown trousers and a leather chest plate, which he soon takes off, his circlet not even crooked, "Now you know how I felt, My Queen," he switches to Sindarin, not turning to meet her.
"I did not act so foolish," she stands, and Thranduil listens as the footsteps come to behind him, not faltering in his movements as he removes all daggers, "patrol by yourself, my lord, is incredibly dangerous."
There is a pause, and he turns on his heels, "I am sorry, that I upset you. I did not mean to say that you were not beautiful before." She smiles sadly, seeing so he takes a step forward, shakily raising a hand to her shoulder. "Your station is not mere, I valued you as the head of my royal guard, I just wanted you to feel as if your position as my Queen was better so that you would not leave for the battle that will soon be upon us all."
She laughs slightly, "I must say I expected it to be sooner, rather than later."
"I am simply relieved that those in the fortress have gone quiet, and we can prepare," Thranduil states, moving his hand to gently cup her cheek.
There is a pause, as he gently smiles down to her, which she soon finds herself returning.
"You are forgiven," for the King rarely apologises, "and I am sorry for what I said, your comments made me feel unvalued, and I wanted you to feel the same."
He leans forward, and the two of them shut their eyes as they lean their foreheads against each other, "I hate that I made you feel that way, I will never do so again and the comments I made were unfair, you will be a wonderful mother and I know you would never put our child at risk."
"Good," she jests, making his smile widen, "and you, a wonderful father."
