2018 Music | My Faves

This is a bit delayed but @genjitsu-no-yume reminded me to create a list of my favourite music in 2018. I’ve split this list into 3 sections; favourite songs, favourite albums and throwback discoveries because I am constantly discovering music releases months (sometimes years) after they’ve been released OTL.

By no means is this a list of what I think was the best. This is simply a list of the music I discovered which I loved and none of it is in any particular order. There’s constantly so much being released and all of it is so wonderful, how to possibly pick between it all?!

Favourite Albums Released in 2018

1. Post Traumatic - Mike Shinoda

Having been a Linkin Park fan since I was 13, Chester’s passing hit me really, really hard. Every Linkin Park fan can relate to the heart break felt but when Mike started releasing music, it became therapy for us all. The album dropped half way through 2018 and by then, he’d already released a fair number of the tracks as E.P.’s beforehand. Even though we’d heard many of the songs by this point, listening to the album as a whole was so much more emotional and so moving. Mike’s emotive lyrics, the strife he went through after losing someone so close to him is a pain we all felt we could connect to. Truly, I’m so thankful to him for releasing this album. I replayed it so much for weeks and weeks and the more I listened to it, the more I felt myself healing. The music is incredible; as always Mike has his own unique touch when it comes to creating music and the lyrics really tell a story of grief, sorrow, heartbreak, anger but most of all, hope. It’s this hope that we’re left hanging on to by the time the album ends and if that isn’t the perfect way to end an album, I don’t know what is.

2. DON’T MESS UP MY TEMPO - EXO

Honestly, I was too immersed in NU’EST to give EXO a second thought as both groups debuted at the same time but I’d always known of EXO and always had a distant appreciation of their talents. However, when they started releasing teasers for their comeback my EXO-L friend started sharing her excitement with me. I went with it, intrigued to hear what they’d release. The moment I watched the MV for ‘Tempo’, I was instantly sold. I was so sold that I couldn’t stop re-watching the MV for days and days, to the point that I was trying to find signal in the Bermuda triangle that is the staff room at work just to stream it during lunch breaks! Safe to say, I fell pretty hard. Then I listened to the whole album and I was blown away. My only question was-why hadn’t I listened to them properly in the first place? Every song on this album is a mature progression for the group and their harmonies are just unyielding. I honestly can not praise this album enough. Mostly I’m just so thankful that it exists because it got me into EXO’s music properly, after long last!

3. WHO, YOU - NU’EST W

Picking a favourite album by my boys was difficult because they released 2 stellar mini albums in 2018, however I had to go with ‘WHO, YOU’ in the end because my goodness was every track blindingly fantastic. In fact I’d go as far as to say that every song on this album could be released as a promo track and every song would chart well. NU’EST W did a brilliant job in the composition and tone of this album. It’s somewhat moody whilst also incorporating EDM which just blends so effortlessly. I really can’t fault any song on this album. And don’t even get me started on the title track; ‘Dejavu’ was a masterpiece! Prior to release NU’EST W had stated that the title track would include Latin tones since that was quite a big musical trend throughout 2018. As expected, they incorporated the Latin tones so subtly that it created such a infectious and trendy song. Also that bass in the chorus-bridge is so funky! Just amazing. NU’EST W’s musical development in 2018 was such a marvel and this album really proved that.

4. WARNING - Sunmi

As a Wonderful, naturally I was excited every time Sunmi released anything. However seeing just how her popularity soared after ‘Gashina’ was released filled me with so much inexplicable joy because yes, this is what she deserved; RECOGNITION. This woman has only ever worked hard to challenge herself and grow as an artist and ‘WARNING’ is certainly proof of that growth. Comparing the musical tone of ‘WARNING’ to her first mini album ‘Full Moon’ you can really hear the stark difference in styling both musically and vocally. Sunmi has always had a unique set of vocals but in her ‘Full Moon’ mini album, they were masked greatly by the production I felt. But having more musical control after leaving JYPent, Sunmi has proved release after release what a capable song-writer she is and how she can work with the production team to create an album that not only appeals to the large majority but is true to her artistry. This entire album is testament to her talents and to know that she snatched so many music awards for it fills me with nothing but pride. Every award and achievement with this album was well deserved.

5. The Pains of Growing - Alessia Cara

I’ve been a fan of Alessia’s music from the moment I heard ‘Scars to Your Beautiful’, introduced to me by my sister. That was one of the rare times where she had shared music I actually loved! Ever since then, I’ve patiently waited for Alessia to release some new music, so the moment ‘Growing Pains’ was released as a single, I was instantly hooked. I replayed the song so many times in one day I lost count. I just knew that her new album would be equally if not better than her first album. She certainly matured in her lyric writing and musicality because ‘The Pains of Growing’ is such a fantastic conceptual album. The trials and tribulations of transitioning into an adult can really be trying but Alessia took all those experiences we all go through and placed them in song. Listening to the songs on this album just makes me remember those difficult times yet at the same time, there’s a fondness in the crazy and ridiculous emotions and moments which took place. That is what this album does; it takes you back to those times if you’re already grown. But for those who are growing still, it’s something you can find comfort in and relate to.

Throwback Discoveries

1. EVOLution - Sabrina Carpenter

I didn’t mean to completely fall helplessly in love with Sabrina Carpenter’s music especially since I just looked her music up after binge watching ‘Girl Meets World’, but that’s exactly what happened. In fact I listened to her music non-stop for so long, my sister got fed up of constantly listening to Sabrina (she should’ve been thanking me really //rolls eyes). Her first album ‘Eyes Wide Open’ was such a sweet and soft album, I really enjoyed it a lot but her second album ‘EVOLution’ really was a level up in her styling both musically and physically. It’s very experimental and you can tell that Sabrina was still finding her feet and figuring out what kind of music she wanted to release, but I always love the journey. The albums which portray the journey, the experimenting, I always end up loving them the most and this album is exactly that. Lyrically, I really love what Sabrina did on ‘Thumbs’; singing about society and humanity the way she did was brave and I couldn’t help but love her even more after hearing this song. Every song on this album holds its own and is such a fantastic testament to Sabrina’s progression as an artist.

2. Holiday Night - Girls’ Generation

Work became quite stressful for me last Spring and for a whole week, I found that ‘Holiday’ by Girls’ Generation kept popping into my head. The odd thing about this was that I’d only heard the song a handful of times and I’d never listened to the album-so then why was it in my head? How? I put it down to the fact that I actually needed a holiday, ironically (I really did though //sobs). In the end, I decided to look the album up and give it a listen. So I did. And then I listened to it some more. And before I knew it, I was just listening to it on repeat for weeks. Honestly, I’d never gotten in Girls’ Generation properly (aside from absolutely loving their Japanese album ‘Girls and Peace’); I’d just casually listened to them over the years so I was quite taken aback by just how much I loved this album. It just made me feel so happy and made me feel so good, especially after long tiring days at work. This then propelled me to look into their discography a little more...that is until I got a little sidetracked...

3. The Voice - Taeyeon

So whilst listening to more Girls’ Generation, I thought, “Oh yes, solo work!” And I don’t know why, I went with Taeyeon’s solo work first. That’s basically where I got completely sidetracked and completely forgot to check the other members because W O W! Taeyeon has some amazing pipes!! I had watched her MV for ‘I (feat. Verbal Jint)’ years ago but just not taken to it as much; after re-watching it, I then watched the MV for her song ‘Make Me Love You’ and that’s where I fell for her music. It’s such a simple song melodically but the way Taeyeon’s vocals build throughout the song from one octave to another, gaining more and more strength and confidence just fits the meaning of the song so perfectly. I was so blown away when I heard this song that I needed more. I downloaded her album in the end and gave it a proper listen. Every song had me hooked but the song which got me the most was ‘Time Lapse’. When I saw that Kim Jongwan from Nell had written the lyrics and helped with the composition I just knew I’d love this because I love Nell, and I did love this! SO MUCH! But it wasn’t just the song structure and melody, but Taeyeon’s voice is so vulnerable in this song. When she hits that high note towards the ends of the song, it gives me goosebumps every time. Honestly, it left me breathless. No wonder her first full album was entitled ‘The Voice’ because really, Taeyeon’s voice is exceptionally. To add to it, she covered Nell’s ‘Time Spent Walking Through Memories’ which was an additional bonus track on the physical album and what a cover it is-WHAT A COVER! I’ve nothing but so much love for Taeyeon’s talent, truly.

4. Tree - SEKAI NO OWARI

What I love doing at conventions is picking up random album, just to discover something new and exciting. Although in this case, I knew about SEKAI NO OWARI already and I absolutely loved their song ‘Death Disco’ and their collab with Epik High, however beyond that? I knew very little of their music. I came across the limited edition of this album at a convention and thought, “Wow, I know this is rare so I should just get it. Yup.” Plus it was a great opportunity to expose myself to more of their music, so why not? I do think music is about timing because if past me had heard this album, I don’t think I’d have appreciated it half as much as I appreciated listening to it in 2018. SEKAI NO OWARI’s musicality is just so unique; I’ve never heard anything else like it! The more I listened to this album, the more I found myself in a trance just repeating it. I’m a big fantasy lover so when listening to this album, I realised it was like listening to something from another world, something mythical and sometimes ethereal but mostly just-unusual, in a good way. It’s very difficult to explain the way SEKAI NO OWARI’s music sounds but if you know it, you know what I mean. If you don’t know it, you should go check them out.

5. The War - EXO

Having finally given into EXO, I basically spent all of November and December listening to their entire discography. ALL OF IT. The hilarious thing is that my first impression of ‘The War’ was, “I’m not entirely sure what I feel about this album”. Then I re-listened to it more and more...and more...and more, until i realised the entire album had grown on me at an alarming rate. In fact, the point at which i realised just how much I loved this album was when I was trying to create a playlist of my favourite EXO songs and I put 7 out of 9 songs on this album in that playlist. What’s even funnier is that I liked ‘Forever’ and ‘Diamond’ the least when i first heard them, but after listening to the album so much, they became two of my favourite songs! This doesn’t happen often, where I end up liking an album I didn’t like much to begin with so much but this album really knocked me for twenty! I could probably write reams and reams for every single track on this album but what I will say is that this album really shows just how much EXO grew musically since their first album ‘XOXO’. I really feel like you can hear EXO coming into their own on this album like-they sound comfortable with the music they’re singing, as if this is what they’ve wanted to create for so long. They exude so much confidence vocally on this album that you can’t help but fall for every single track. At least that’s what I found!

Sen. John McCain, Maverick Politician and Decorated War Veteran, Dies at 81

Sen. John McCain, the former POW and outspoken Republican politician nicknamed The Maverick for being unafraid to disagree with fellow members of his party, has died. He was 81. “Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28 p.m. on August 25, 2018,” his family said in a statement Saturday, according to NBC News. On Friday, his family announced that McCain, “with his usual strength of will,” decided to stop treatment for the stage-four brain cancer he had been battling since its diagnosis last summer. “In the year since,” the McCain family said, “John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict.” My family is deeply appreciative of all the love and generosity you have shown us during this past year. Thank you for all your continued support and prayers. McCain later revealed during a September 2017 interview with 60 Minutes that he asked doctors to be forthright about his health. “Some say 3 percent, some say 14 percent. You know it’s — it’s a very poor prognosis,” he said. “So I just said, ‘I understand. Now we’re going to do what we can, get the best doctors we can find and do the best we can, and at the same time celebrate with gratitude a life well lived.’ ” Months later, as McCain continued his battle against brain cancer, his daughter Meghan paid tribute to her father and his “Viking” fighting spirit in a touching Instagram post in May. “My Mother calls me ‘John McCain in a dress’ – my relationship with my father has always been magic – we are fiercely and protectively forever on each other’s team,” Meghan captioned a smiling photo with her father. “Love with your complete and whole heart in this life. We keep fighting because we are all McCains, we are a family of a long lineage of Vikings – fighting is what we have always done, and what we will always do.” Born in August 1936 at the U.S. air base in Panama, McCain was the son and grandson of two four-star U.S. Navy admirals. He ultimately followed in their footsteps, enrolling at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1954. As a naval pilot, he was deployed on the USS Forrestal to the Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam, where he was ultimately taken as a prisoner of war in October 1967. McCain was captured by the North Vietnamese after his plane was shot down by a missile. According to McCain, the plane entered an “inverted, almost straight-down spin,” and he ejected, breaking both his arms and his leg in the process. While held captive at Hanoi’s Hoa Lo prison, McCain was denied medical attention and repeatedly tortured by his captors. “They left me on the floor of a cell for four days, during which time I lapsed in and out of consciousness,” McCain told PEOPLE back in 1992. “Their policy was that they wouldn’t provide any medical treatment unless you gave them military information. I would only give them my name, rank, serial number and date of birth. And so, after about four days on the floor of the cell, they got nothing out of me because I kept passing out.” McCain refused to cooperate, and remained at the prison for more than five years – spending much of that time in solitary confinement. He recalled to PEOPLE, “they treated me pretty badly,” revealing further that he was suffering from dysentery and was being beaten every two hours in order to get him to sign confessions and make audio recordings trashing America. He was released in March of 1973, but still bore some of the injuries from his harrowing ordeal. “Unlike some, I was fortunate that I was able to put it all behind me when I came home,” he said. “People ask me how long did it take to readjust? It took me about 45 minutes. I never had a nightmare or a flashback or anything like that. I know a lot of my friends were not so fortunate, who never fully came back from that experience. But I did.” After returning home, McCain regained his naval flight status and was named the naval liaison to the U.S. Senate in 1977 before ultimately retiring from duty in 1981. During his service, McCain was awarded the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross, among other honors, according to his website. McCain was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Arizona in 1982, serving two terms before being elected as state senator in 1986. After more than a decade in the Senate, McCain ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000 but lost to primary opponent George W. Bush. McCain went on to become the 2008 Republican nominee for president alongside running mate Sarah Palin; he lost to Barack Obama. While McCain continued to defend Palin’s performance in a new book and documentary set to be released in May, he also said he regretted not picking former Senator Joseph I. Lieberman as his running mate in 2008, according to The New York Times. McCain said “my gut told me” to choose Lieberman instead of Palin and “I wish I had.” Leading up to his death, McCain served as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services, a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. In July, McCain underwent surgery to remove a blood clot above his eye. The surgery went well but had massive reverberations in Washington, forcing GOP Senators to postpone a vote on the controversial Republican bill to replace Obamacare until McCain could return. The senator revealed his diagnosis in July, and one day after doing so he returned to Twitter and promised he’d be back on the Senate floor. “I greatly appreciate the outpouring of support — unfortunately for my sparring partners in Congress, I’ll be back soon, so stand-by!” He said. Just five days later, he kept his promise and returned to thunders applause from people in both parties. While he was welcomed back, he proved to still by The Maverick when he refused to support the Graham-Cassidy bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act in September, which drew sharp criticism from President Donald Trump as others hailed him a hero. After the vote, McCain went back to receiving chemotherapy treatments in Phoenix, Arizona, to slow the progression of the disease. He completed his first round of radiation in August 2017. In December, McCain was hospitalized for “normal side effects of his ongoing cancer therapy,” his office said. But to the excitement of his family, he was able to come home to Arizona for Christmas. In February, Meghan said that her father had a “crazy amazing recovery.” “He is in Sedona, Arizona, right now at our ranch doing physical therapy and he has amazing doctors and he’s doing really well,” she said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “He had a sort of rough time at Christmas and he’s made this crazy amazing recovery which I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at, he is so resilient in so many different ways. He’s a tough bastard.” He continued physical therapy at home in Arizona for the next few months, until he had to return to the Mayo Clinic in April for an emergency surgery. “On Sunday, Senator McCain was admitted to Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, and underwent surgery to treat an intestinal infection related to diverticulitis,” his office said. Meghan added that he was in “stable” condition. Later that month, McCain shared an excerpt from his new book, in which he admitted that his brain cancer diagnosis gave him an “ungentle persuasion” to realize that his current term in office would be his last, and pushed him to change the way he votes. “I’m freer than colleagues who will face the voters again. I can speak my mind without fearing the consequences much. And I can vote my conscience without worry,” McCain said. “I don’t think I’m free to disregard my constituents’ wishes, far from it. I don’t feel excused from keeping pledges I made. Nor do I wish to harm my party’s prospects. But I do feel a pressing responsibility to give Americans my best judgment.” Before his death, McCain enjoyed spending time on the deck at his Arizona ranch, visiting with a constant flow of friends, including former Vice President Joe Biden, The New York Times reported in May. Biden said the two reminisced about the “crazy senators” they had served with, the overseas trips they took together, and the friendship between McCain and Biden’s two sons. The Blount Conspiracy

Did former President Trump’s remarks to the crowd that subsequently stormed the Capitol in January cross the legal boundary that separates speaking intemperately and unwisely from actually fomenting insurrection? I myself am not a lawyer, but fifty-four out of our hundred senators actually do have law degrees and should therefore be more than qualified to answer that question…and especially since they were all present to witness the events under consideration! So, assuming the senators vote honestly and without allowing political affiliation to cloud their vision, we should have the answer soon enough.

In an obvious way, the President’s trial begs to be compared with the three previous presidential impeachment trials our country has seen: the trials in the Senate of Andrew Johnson in 1868, of Bill Clinton in 1999, and of President Trump himself in 2020. But less well known is that the House has in the course of our nation’s history voted, not four times, but twenty-one times, to impeach individuals and thus to send them over to be tried in the Senate for “treason, bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” They were a varied lot, the accused: three presidents, fifteen federal judges (of whom, one Supreme Court justice), one cabinet official, and one senator. That’s twenty…and President Trump’s trial this week makes twenty-one. And these trials, which ended up with eight guilty verdicts and eight acquittals, together constitute the real precedent for this week’s proceedings. (Those verdicts add up to sixteen because in one instance—see below—the charges were dismissed and in three cases the accused individuals chose to resign from office before they could be tried.)

Given the degree to which impeachment has been a topic for discussion in our nation for the last two years, it’s amazing to me how rarely anyone mentions the impeachments not involving presidents. (The only exception would be the 1876 impeachment of William W. Belknap, the Secretary of War under President Ulysses S. Grant who was charged with accepting payments in exchange for official appointments and whose case was actually mentioned several times this week on the floor of the Senate.) This week, I would like to write about the first of them all, however, and in my usual way to invite readers to look into the future by looking into the past and considering the strange case of Senator William Blount of Tennessee (1749–1800).

The whole matter had to do with something now called the Blount Conspiracy, a huge to-do in the last decade of the eighteenth century and now yet another important event in American history more or less completely forgotten by almost all. It was, however, a very big deal in its day. When Abigail Adams, our nation’s second First Lady, suggested in public that she regretted that Congress lacked the ability to resolve the matter with a guillotine, she clearly had Senator Blount’s neck in mind as she spoke.

William Blount was not a nobody. He signed the Constitution. He was the sole governor of the “Southwest Territory” that later joined the union as the State of Tennessee. He was one of Tennessee’s first two senators, coming to the Senate in 1796. He was also heavily into real estate, eventually owning about 2.5 million acres in his home state and in the adjoining territory then known as Trans-Appalachia and today covering parts of Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. (That there were native Americans on the scene to whom the land belonged in every sense except the strictly legal one invented by the Colonials themselves seems to have occurred to no one at all.) The problem—for Blount and his brothers—was that much of the land had been purchased on credit. That, in and of itself, wouldn’t have been a problem if the price of land hadn’t collapsed when war broke out between Great Britain and Spain the same year that Blount entered the Senate. The crucial detail here is that the Treaty of 1783 that ended the American Revolution guaranteed that Americans would henceforth be able to navigate the Mississippi freely, a commercial boon that was obviously going to collapse if Britain was defeated by Spain, which eventuality would have made the Blounts’ real estate dramatically less valuable. And so Blount, eager to avoid bankruptcy, chose to act daringly and wholly extra-legally by conspiring on his own with the British to assist the latter in defeating Spain. Part of the plan involved invading Spanish Louisiana. And another part involved abetting British plans to invade Spanish Florida.

There is a lot here to digest. For one thing, who ever heard of Spanish Louisiana? Didn’t our nation acquire Louisiana (along with another 750,000 square miles of what today is most of the American Midwest) as part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, one of President Thomas Jefferson’s greatest accomplishments while in office? So the answer is that, yes, that is what happened. But Louisiana itself went through different colonialist phases and was indeed part of the Spanish Empire after Spain acquired it from France in 1762 as part of the Treaty of Fontainebleau that was signed towards the end of the Seven Year’s War (another conflict remembered today by none). But Spain didn’t hold onto Louisiana for long, ceding it back to France in 1802, just in time for the United States to purchase it—and another roughly half billion acres—for all of fifteen million dollars. But when Senator Blount was trying to keep the price of land from collapsing even further, Spain was in control of present-day Louisiana.

Blount’s extra-legal negotiations with the British came out in in July of 1797 when a letter written by Blount was discovered and read aloud in the Senate. When Thomas Jefferson, then the nation’s Vice President under John Adams, asked for an explanation, Blount asked for some time to consult his papers. The Senate gave him twenty-four hours. That happened on July 3. On July 4, the twenty-first anniversary of American independence, Blount failed to appear and it became known that he had fled Washington. On July 8, the Senate voted 25 to 1 to expel him from the Senate for acting contrary to the nation’s best interests by secretly negotiating with a foreign power. Later that month, a federal district court judge issued a warrant for Blount’s arrest.

And then, on January 28, 1798, the House approved five articles of impeachment against Blount, including conspiracy to violate both the Neutrality Act of 1794 (that made it illegal for an American citizen to wage war against a country at peace with the United States) and the Treaty of San Lorenzo, also called Pinckney’s Treaty, that defined the border between the United States and Spanish Florida. (The plan Blount hatched with his British handlers involved, among other things, invading Pensacola.) Seven “managers” were duly chosen to argue the case in the Senate. Almost a year of in-house wrangling followed, during the course of which Blount steadfastly refused to return to Washington. And then, finally, the Senate convened as a Court of Impeachment on December 17, 1798. (In the meantime, Blount, clearly taking his expulsion from the Senate as a done deal, ran for and was duly elected to the Tennessee Legislature.) For its part, the Senate debated whether it could proceed in the absence of the accused, then decided that it could.

And now we get to the interesting part. Blount’s lawyers argued on two different grounds that the Senate lacked the jurisdiction to try Blount: one, because the phrase in the Constitution allowing for the impeachment of the “President, the Vice President, and all civil Officers of the United States” did not mean to include senators (and, indeed, Blount was and is the only member of either the Senate or the House ever to be impeached); and, two, because even if it did have the theoretical right to try a senator, Blount, by virtue of having been expelled from the Senate, was specifically no longer a “civil Officer” of the United States government and was therefore no longer under their jurisdiction.

They apparently made their case effectively. On January 10, the Senate failed to approve a resolution declaring that Blount’s prosecution fell within the Senate’s jurisdiction. Then, on January 11, the Senate voted formally to dismiss Senator Blount’s impeachment, whereupon Vice President Jefferson formally dismissed the case against him.

Blount died a hero to his fellow Tennesseans, but the precise reason his impeachment was dismissed remains a matter of debate. Did the Senate feel that having made him a hero was enough, that they hardly needed to go all the way to making him a martyr? Or was the sense of the Senate simply that the impeachment process exists to remove criminals from positions of authority in the government and that there cannot be any real reason to undertake proceedings against someone no longer holding office? Both arguments are cogent. And both are highly relevant in that both could easily be applied to President Trump. How it can be that William Blount’s name is not on the nation’s tongue these days as the very same issues are debated in the very same Senate—now that, at least to me, is even more of a mystery than the “real” reason, whatever it was, that James Blount was able to break the law with impunity without suffering any consequences at all!

Promoting a Bosnian War ‘Rape Hotel’ Means Erasing History

Disgusting individuals. Have they learnt no lessons? Reopening a hotel used for rape as a tourist attraction!

In a summer campaign, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s tourism authority has been promoting a hotel in Visegrad where women and girls were detained and raped during the 1990s war - another attempt to delete past atrocities from public memory.

The Hotel Vilina Vlas in Visegrad was one of the infamous rape camps of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is suspected that at least 200 Bosniak girls and women were held there and repeatedly sexually assaulted and murdered.

One of the victims, who was 17 at the time, told the Washington Post that she was taken to Vilina Vlas by Milan Lukic, widely known as the leader of a Bosnian Serb paramilitary group called the White Eagles (also called the Avengers), together with her 15-year-old sister and an 18-year-old friend.

They were separated and locked in different rooms, according to the newspaper interview. She overheard Lukic telling his soldiers to “question” them, “but not too much”, and laughter in the corridor.

A few hours afterwards, she was raped by Lukic, who told her that she was lucky to be with him, since she could have been thrown into the river with rocks tied around her ankles. She heard a loud cry “when the door across the hall was opened” and recognised the voice of her sister. She never saw her again.

After raping the 17-year-old, Lukic returned her to her family. They stayed in Visegrad as long as they could, hoping that her sister would be returned too. After her mother went to the police station almost every day for a month, searching for her sister, Lukic said to her: “What do you want? At least I returned one of your daughters.”

Lukic was sentenced by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia to life in prison for war crimes including murder, cruelty, persecution and other crimes against humanity committed in Visegrad in 1992 and 1993.

But even though “there was ample evidence about a large number of rapes, murder and other serious crimes being committed at the Vilina Vlas”, according to Dermot Groome, who led the prosecution of Lukic at the Hague court, he was not charged with sexual violence.

The women who were tortured and abused at the Vilina Vlas hotel, who were, Groom said, “some of the most traumatised people I had ever encountered in my work as a prosecutor”, did not want to cooperate in a prosecution for sexual violence, because of their fears about appearing in court.

The Bosnian state court sentenced a member of the Bosnian Serb police force, Zeljko Lelek, to 16 years in prison for crimes against humanity in Visegrad, including rape. One of his rape victims at Vilina Vlas was Jasmina Ahmetspahic who, after being raped for four days, ended her life (and prevented further sexual assault) by jumping from a window at the hotel.

Despite the judgment, which confirmed the hotel was used as a rape camp, and the witness testimonies at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, government officials and Visegrad’s Serb inhabitants deny ever having heard of rape, torture or murder at the Hotel Vilina Vlas.

Author Edina Becirevic pointed out in her book ‘Genocide on the Drina River’ that rape was part of a systematic, genocidal set of crimes committed with the aim of exterminating the Bosniak population.

As part of the process of the obliteration of memory, an important part of ethnic cleansing, the Serbs who controlled Visegrad after the war reopened the Vilina Vlas as the spa hotel it used to be, without even a change of furniture.

Foreign visitors were encouraged to book rooms. Kym Vercoe, an actress from Sydney, stayed at the Vilina Vlas in 2008. After learning that a hotel was one of the most infamous rape camps in 1992, upon her return to Australia she wrote a play called ‘Seven Kilometres North East: Performance on Geography, Tourism, and Crime’, which deals with “ignorance, geography, tourism, and crime”.

On July 5 this year, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s public broadcaster BHRT reported that the state tourism board, with the support of the municipality of Visegrad, had launched a promotional campaign unde the slogan “We are waiting for you in Visegrad” and provided gift vouchers as a way to attract tourists. The Vilina Vlas is one of the hotels participating in the campaign.

The hotel’s past was not even mentioned. In another report in May 2020, BHRT also praised the rejuvenating qualities of the water at the Vilina Vlas’s spa. “Both the sick and the healthy have come here for centuries, some for health [reasons], some for rest and fun,” it said. With such reporting, the country’s public broadcasting service is participating in memory erasure and denial.

‘Murder of Historical Truth’

In 1991, Visegrad had 21,000 inhabitants. In what has come to be known as ‘ethnic cleansing’, the town’s Bosniak population, the majority at the time (63 per cent), was almost completely removed.

Out of 14,500 Muslims who lived in Visegrad before the war, around 3,000 were killed, often on the famous 16th Century Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic bridge which served as an inspiration for Ivo Andric’s famous novel ‘The Bridge on the Drina’.

The bridge had for centuries been a ritual place of atrocity, both in myth and recorded history, serving as a kind of public theatre in times of war and upheaval, as Andric put it. During World War II, Draza Mihailovic’s Serb nationalist Chetniks, who are still celebrated in Visegrad, tortured and murdered hundreds of Muslims from the area on the bridge.

In October 1943 alone, around 1,500 Bosniaks were killed at the bridge. After seeing the killings at the bridge in 1992, Bosko Polic, the retired principal of Ivo Andric High School in Visegrad, said: “I read again Ivo Andric’s novel during the war. I would look up from the pages and see what he was describing around me.”

In the spring and summer of 1992, Bosniak civilians were brought to the bridge, murdered, and thrown into the Drina river. The number of killings was so great that Visegrad police inspector Milan Josipovic received “a macabre complaint from downriver, from the management of Bajina Basta hydro-electric plant across the Serbian border”, reported Guardian journalist Ed Vulliamy.

The plant’s director requested to “slow the flow of corpses down the Drina”, since “they were clogging up the culverts in his dam at such a rate that he could not assemble sufficient staff to remove them”.

Mesud Cocalic, who lived about 12 miles downriver from Visegrad in the village of Slap, said he and a group of neighbours buried 180 bodies they had retrieved from the water, identifying 82 of them. The bodies, they said, “were often slashed with knife marks and were black and blue”.

“The young women were wrapped in blankets that were tied at each end. These female corpses were always naked. We buried several children, including two boys 18 months old. We found one man crucified to the back of a door. Once we picked up a garbage bag filled with 12 human heads,” said Cocalic.

Andricgrad, a joint venture by internationally acclaimed Serbian film director Emir Kusturica and the government of Republika Srpska, with additional financial support from the Serbian government, is an attempt to physically recreate the Visegrad of Ivo Andric’s novel.

A theme park mini-town, Andricgrad, is also being promoted in the same tourism campaign as the Hotel Vilina Vlas. But Andricgrad is actually an ideological construct which, as Sarajevo-based human rights activist Hikmet Karcic wrote, “proposes an alternative version of Visegrad’s past that provides historical and cultural legitimacy for its present and underpins the aspirations for its future”.

Rape, torture, and murder are not mentioned in Andricgrad. Kusturica said that the town should be “a symbol of pacifism… to encourage eastern Bosnia as a symbol of peace”.

This “symbol of peace”, whose horrific history projects like Andricgrad and campaign like “We are waiting for you in Visegrad” are trying to repress and deny, was nevertheless a place where some of the worst atrocities of the 1990s war were committed.

To not mention its past means to exonerate those who were responsible for these crimes. To quote the words of Israel W. Charny from in his article entitled ‘A Classification of Denials of the Holocaust and Other Genocides’, not mentioning this past also means the “celebration of destruction, renewed humiliation of survivors, and metaphorical murder of historical truth and collective memory”.

Give Some, Take Some: How the Community Fridge Fights Food Insecurity

A Free Fridge for the community at 1144 Bergen Street in Crown Heights

At these community-run sites, anyone is welcome to take or leave food

One afternoon in May, artist and community gardener Sade Boyewa was scrolling through her Instagram feed when she caught a photo of a commercial fridge sitting outside a brownstone in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. It was stocked full with squash, canned chickpeas, carrots, and bread, and above it, there was a sign painted in bright letters that read “FREE FOOD.” “I remember thinking, this is what we need in Harlem,” she told me. “The line to the food pantry snakes around two blocks. Not everyone is fit to go and stand on line for several hours.”

Like millions of other Americans, Boyewa had been laid off from her day job in March. As she worked to put together other paid projects from home, she used any leftover time she had to coordinate a free fridge of the same kind at 352 W. 116th Street in Harlem, across the street from where she’s lived for 25 years. Through Instagram, she got in touch with A New World In Our Hearts, the anarchist community organizers behind the Bed-Stuy fridge, and after a week they were able to find and deliver a donated fridge to her doorstep. After she plugged it into an outlet at her local bodega (with the enthusiastic permission of her deli guys), and stocked the stainless steel home fridge with yogurt, plantains, apples, and lettuce, some donated and some purchased, Boyewa joined the ranks of volunteer citizens running free community fridges all over the country right now. The sign on the door read, “Take what you need. Leave what you don’t,” and in Spanish, “Comidas gratis.” “People couldn’t believe it,” Boyewa said. “‘Is this for real? Is this free?’”

The fallout from the coronavirus touching down in the U.S. earlier this year has been devastating, especially for New York City. When restaurants, bars, and nonessential businesses closed as a mandate of the state-imposed shutdown on April 29, millions of people found themselves out of jobs, unable to pay rent, and lacking the food they needed to survive. An estimated 1 million New Yorkers consistently went without food before the global pandemic began, and in only three months, that number had more than doubled. By mid-May the city pledged to deliver 1.5 million meals a day to the 1 in 4 New Yorkers who were now food insecure, but the $170 million plan was stretched thin and flawed. In a CBS New York report, some New Yorkers said they found the city’s food deliveries to be lacking in nutrition, or worse, spoiled. These solutions started to look like Band-Aids over a growing wound.

While the city’s coordinated food service worked to correct its failings, New Yorkers were busy taking matters into their own hands. In seven locations in under four months, conventional and commercial fridges, plastered with signs of free food, were plugged into extension cords tethered to apartment buildings, corner bodegas, and businesses in three out of the five boroughs: the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. Thadeaus Umpster, a member of A New World In Our Hearts, said the organization will soon set up fridges in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, D.C., and several more locations in New York. Many of the fridges, like one that was set up outside Playground Coffee Shop in Bed-Stuy, have social media accounts that provide updates on their daily stocks — today, blueberries and radishes; tomorrow, it could be anything.

In Brownsville, a predominantly black neighborhood in East New York, a free fridge was set up in early June by folks running Universe City, an urban aquaponic farm and workspace. The space and the fridge at 234 Glenmore Avenue have become hubs for organizers in the Black Lives Matter movement since the protests began at the end of May, and protesters who have taken to the streets to demand justice have inherited boxes of donated fresh produce to sustain their energy in the fight. “We’re incubating the political and social education of people in our community,” Alexis Mena, the co-founder of Universe City and one of the free fridge’s organizers, said, “so they can better understand how to take power back from the institutions who have taken it from them.”

Using food as a form of protest has long and storied roots in black communities, and urban farming and the Brownsville free fridge are acts of resistance to the food apartheid that leaves many BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) neighborhoods without access to fresh, healthy food. Black people have experienced vastly disproportionate COVID-19 diagnoses and deaths to white people, so the Brownsville free fridge hopes to draw attention to the racist city-planning that has affected the health of their communities as well. “It’s the quality of our air, how close we are to landfills,” Mena said, so why should they trust the government to properly feed them?

By extension of the fact that the free fridges are maintained by people in the community for people in the community, Boweya, Mena, and Pam Tietze, an artist who organized the Friendly Fridge in Bushwick, said that everyone begins to feel protective ownership over the fridges. “The deli next door has a hose and they spray down the fridge sometimes to keep it clean,” she said. “The superintendent of the building next to the fridge has become its guardian angel. He interviews people who come to the fridge; he reports to the group chat what the current stock levels are like.” On Mother’s Day, a local florist left a box of individually portioned flower bouquets with a sign: “Take a flower for mom!” Tietze set up a Venmo account to receive donations for groceries and a local artist painted a friendly face on the fridge. This was the community-centered result that Tietze had hoped for. “I wanted the fridge to self-regulate,” she said. “I’m not the fridge’s mom. I’m just the person who put it out there.” As the protests against police brutality began at the end of May, Friendly Fridge organizers set up a memorial to George Floyd with a framed photo, bouquets of flowers, and santeria candles.

On a rolling gate behind the fridge, Hugo Girl, the artist who had given the Friendly Fridge a face, painted, “NO CURFEW ON JUSTICE. LET’S EAT THE 1%.”

The community fridge system, while relatively novel in New York, is not an unfamiliar concept in other parts of the world. The movement was popularized in Berlin, when a volunteer-run organization called Foodsharing that has done peer-to-peer community food saving and sharing since 2012 began setting up community fridges (known as fair-teiler) across Germany in 2014. At one point, there were 350 fridges around Germany, with 25 in Berlin alone, all with the purpose of saving and redistributing perfectly good food that would otherwise go to waste. But in 2018, the German government’s food and safety regulators in Berlin cracked down on fair-teiler, causing a large number of them to be locked by their stewards or moved to more private spaces, instead of remaining free and open on the street for anyone to use any time of the day.

In a paper for Geoforum in 2019, Dr. Oona Morrow, a researcher at the Wageningen University in the Netherlands, found that the regulatory fears governments have around community fridges often stem from “fear of unknowable risks.” (Namely, liability around food contamination and spoilage, and lack of official labeling and processing.) “These fears are stoked by a technocratic risk regime that places trust in businesses, scientists, and markets, but not the public,” she writes. But, as she told me by phone from Holland, the research she performed while working with SHARECITY suggests that “sharing food is not how food safety crises happen.” Findings around the E. coli outbreak in romaine lettuce in 2019, for example, pointed to the proximity of cattle to produce-growing fields in Salinas, California, as the likely source of the spread. “It’s through industrial food systems that risk is amplified.”

“Community fridges are an opportunity for people to reimagine what the infrastructure of cities could be like,” Morrow said. “Fridge volunteers are prototyping a different kind of urban infrastructure that could be more caring.” Free fridges in the U.S. have some advantages over their EU counterparts, she added, because our food safety regulations are not nearly as strict as they are in countries like Germany. “With public infrastructure, there is this idea that it can’t work, people aren’t caring enough, people don’t know how to cooperate or take care of each other,” but her research has found those fears to be unfounded, she said. Plus, with the high need for food sharing and other forms of mutual aid in our current crisis, “more things are tolerated in an emergency.”

Right now, there are free community fridges on every continent except Antarctica, and any community fridge coordinator can add theirs to a growing global database on Freedge.org, a volunteer community fridge network started by Ernst Bertone Oehninger in 2014. Bertone Oehninger, a Brazilian Ph.D. candidate in ecology at UC Davis in California, set up a community fridge on his front lawn in 2014. “We didn’t ask for permission before we looked into the food laws or liability laws,” he told me. “The county impounded the fridge because they said it was illegal food distribution.” But, as Bertone Oehninger pointed out in the local news at the time, the food regulation laws Freedge was being held to weren’t written to include individual food sharing. Freedge isn’t a restaurant, he reasoned, so why was it being treated that way?

With help from city officials, Freedge was soon protected under California’s gleaner laws, meaning it could safely distribute produce but not home-cooked food. Now, whenever someone reaches out to Freedge asking how they can set up one in their town, the volunteer organization provides resources like information on liability, as well as open-source guides to solar-powering fridges and adding cameras to make sure stocks within the fridge are fresh. Their primary recommendations are to check the fridge once a day and clearly outline what foods are not allowed, as those regulations will vary state to state.

The Community Fridge Network, which began in 2017 in the U.K., takes a more centralized, regulated approach. The fridges are donated to local communities through the country by Hubbub, an environmental nonprofit. The Community Fridge Network has clear guidelines on what can and cannot be accepted — no raw cheeses and home-cooked meals, for example, to both limit liability around allergens and prevent foods in the fridge from becoming spoiled. Each fridge has at least one coordinator who checks it daily, each fridge maintains a similar aesthetic design, and the people running each unit can receive grant money from Hubbub for maintenance and support. The primary challenge that CFN faces is that the fridges can run out of food too quickly after the stores are replenished. Clare Davies, the coordinator of a community fridge in Dorking, England, said that is only a reflection of the high need of the communities that the fridges serve. “That’s not a problem that is caused by the community fridge, that’s a problem that’s existed before the community fridge was even there.”

Food pantries and government food assistance programs should in theory help to solve the problem of food insecurity, but these systems come with their own set of problems. Mel Paola Murillo, an immigrant from Honduras who is currently seeking asylum in the U.S., has found that the major advantage of the free fridge she uses in New York is that she can get food from the fridge without judgment or questions about her documentation, identity, or needs. “To find free resources is a very important part of my surviving experience in New York,” she told me. The fridge also provides a wider range of culturally relevant foods, as the donations typically come from within her neighborhood. “I like to cook food from my country, and [in the fridge] I’ve found cilantro, plantains, and nopales.” There are also pervasive stigmas around visiting food pantries to get something to eat, as one neighborhood woman told organizers of the Free Fridge. “I feel embarrassed accepting handouts,” she said, but at the Friendly Fridge, “Nobody pays any mind. It’s a big deal that I’ve had breakfast every day this week and I’ve had dinner. It’s changed everything.”

The throughline between all free fridges — whether part of a centralized network or not, in a major city or not — is that they attempt to do the work that more bureaucratic and structural systems like the government won’t and formal food pantries can’t do. “The city, state, and federal government have failed on multiple levels in regards to this crisis,” Umpster, of A New World In Our Hearts, told me. The free fridge model is one way that communities can work together to support each other, while also mitigating the omnipresent excess of food waste in America. “[Unlike food pantries], we don’t coordinate or cooperate with the government. We’re not asking people to give us personal information. We’re not asking people to pray with us, we’re not a charitable organization. We’re a mutual aid group.” That distinction is important — the stigmas that come with having to ask for help are all but eradicated when anyone, anywhere, no matter their situation, can both give to and take from the fridge.

While no city officials have yet to interfere or raise questions about any of the community fridges that have shown up around New York’s boroughs, Umpster said that he doesn’t anticipate strong pushback, as the “response has been universally positive.” Fridges in other cities haven’t always been so lucky — one community fridge owner in Washington state has become the center of a legal battle after authorities shut her fridge down twice. This kind of response isn’t uncommon, Bertone Oehninger explained, because “if you present the idea where the idea doesn’t exist yet, ‘no’ is very easy to say.”

New York’s fridge organizers remain undeterred. “This is a people’s movement,” Boyewa told me. “And right now, people are hurting.” While Boyewa and Tietze welcome outside support and outreach from more formal systems, Mena is less optimistic that something like that could, or even should, actually happen. “No one is going to save us. They’ve proven that they don’t care,” Mena said, adding that racism has pushed his community to take matters of food distribution into their own hands. “Black, indigenous, and people of color have been set up to fail,” he added, “so the people have to come together to take the power back.”

Lionheart Extended Story Notes

They’d gotten into a routine of studying together at the library on Sundays. It was one of the only ‘neutral’ places that remained in Riverdale. They used to study together in The Blue & Gold office after school, or rather, Betty would study and Jughead would work on his novel after they connected clues and worked theories for what Jughead called the murder board. But that was before the new version of Riverdale, with its civil war ongoing between the north side and south side. Jughead was barely still welcome at Pop’s since his move to the south side more than a year ago, and he suspected it was only because he’d been Pop Tate’s most loyal customer since he was 6 years old.

Okay so here's how my neurotic brain works. When I hear phrases, I think of lyrics, album titles, and song titles that are similar or the same. In 1x13, Betty says to Jughead (0:06 to 0:29), "I'm not letting Riverdale's civil war split us apart, Jug." That didn't make me think of the American Civil War, oh no. It made me think of the album C I V I L W A R by Dilinger Four. And that made me think of other heavier music that I love, particularly in hardcore punk and its subgenres.

And then I connected the weird dots.

I've had this thought for a while that I wish Betty had her own something. Because Jughead has his novel. And maybe he also has the Serpents. But what does Betty have? The Blue & Gold isn't really hers. So then I thought what if the something she has is what keeps her darkness at bay? What if the something she has is partially a darkness in itself? What if she doesn't actually need to suppress her darkness? What if what she needs is a counterpoint to it, to turn it into light?

So this was born. I went into it thinking it'd be a 4000-ish word one-shot. Then it turned into two scenes. Then that turned into four scenes. It started to seem plausible and not out of character, given the questions I'd raised, as mentioned above.

Jughead’s eyes were lit up in stormy blue confusion. He didn’t understand. He knew that Betty was darkness but was also light, his light. The music he’d just heard was nothing that he knew about Betty. It wasn’t the songs on the jukebox at Pop’s that she drummed her fingers along to. It wasn’t the self-indulgent dance pop music that she crooned along to with Veronica. It certainly wasn’t the record by The xx that he’d played for Betty the first time they had sex. It wasn’t even the music that had gotten him pegged as that emo kid writing his murder diary or the biker bar tunes from the Whyte Wyrm that had become familiar to him because of the Serpents.

The album referred to is xx by The xx. A month or so ago I found an old article written by Geoff Rickly from Thursday, briefly mentioning that record and a conversation about "VCR". I had to include it. (Sidenote: It totally brought me back to when I wrote Islands and how inspired I was by that album while writing it.)

It started two summers ago, when she went to her internship in LA. Her roommate, Carla, wore dark lipstick and combat boots and put up tons of posters on her side of the room. Betty spent all her free time journaling and watching Veronica Mars while her roommate figured out LA’s abysmal transit system to go see some of the bands that were featured in the posters. Carla was shocked when, during their last week there, Betty asked if she could load some of Carla’s music onto a jump drive for when she got home.

One of my first thoughts about Jughead and Betty teaming up to be teenage sleuths was that it reminded me of Veronica Mars, a show that I'll never be over. I also very quickly remembered that there's an episode called Betty and Veronica. Veronica even says that her old high school was called Riverdale when she's posing as 'Betty' at the rival high school! So now I've got a character in one universe referencing a show that's referenced her universe (the comics, at least)? I am all about this kind of thing.

So for a few months now, since December, that was what Betty had done. She put the headphones on and concentrated on the music. The energy of it was the same as her darkness. It was crude with an air of urgency. It gave her that same tension that she got in the pit of her stomach that had the potential to lead her to destruction, but instead, focusing on the words, on the messages in the thrashing songs, made Betty want to build something beautiful. It reminded her that the burdens on her shoulders, the burdens she carried through the halls of school and into the diner and brought to bed with her at night—they were blessed burdens.

Because she was Betty fucking Cooper, and no one could handle the weight of the world like she could. She’d never stop standing up for what she believed in, never stop going to bat for the people she cared for, never stop looking for justice. Of course, that also meant that she was going to get knocked down and hurt by the cruel world, again and again. But such was a blessed burden, to have that much heart.

Going back to my thing about phrases and song titles, I do it in reverse, too. There's a song called "Blessed Burden" by Defeater. The lyrics are not at all related or applicable but since I decided that I'm doing this, Betty's going to be into hardcore in some shape or form, I wanted to include a phrase with reference to a song. But it also needed to fit. This fit. I think I like those two paragraphs a lot, actually.

STONE COMMUTATION, PORTLAND: THINGS ARE GOING WEIMAR

The recent commutation of Roger Stones’ s sentence triggered the usual fruitless speculation about the “strategy” behind it. Generally, the current incumbent of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is no more capable of thinking beyond today than an Adderall-crazed lab rat desperate for another food pellet. But there is something behind this, and it’s not what the commentariat generally thinks.

LOYALTY? HA!

The immediate, and most obvious, explanation for this politically risky move was that Trump was paying back his loyal consigliere for years of service and, more importantly, keeping his pie-hole shut. Nonsense. On the first point, Trump is famously incapable of loyalty, gratitude, or any other emotion that doesn’t result in cash or an erection. As to the second, Paul Manafort was similarly laconic, yet remains in Federal custody, albeit now on home release.

Hmm. Why the distiction?

THE DIRTY TRICKSTER

Roger Stone has built his latter-day career as a self-professed “dirty trickster.” One stops for a moment to ask why he says so out loud—do spies put “spy” on their business cards?

But leave that aside. Let’s turn for a moment to Stone’s arc. He started out in politics as a Nixon campaign intern—he famously has Tricky Dick tattooed on his back, which no doubt would have proven a point of interest, if not a spooge target, in the showers had he actually begun his sentence—where he carried out some amusing low-grade antics in Nixon’s service. He parlayed that into a career as a K Street lobbyist in the 80’s, where his partner was—what? Paul Manafort. Despite the appeal of these nesting Ukrainian dolls, let’s take a look at the irrelevant, albeit extremely entertaining, interruption in his political career.

in 1996, Stone was a consultant with GOP Senator Robert Dole’s Presidential campaign. That hit a tabloid wall when it was discovered that Stone and his second wife had taken out space in a swingers’ magazine looking for an “exceptional well hung in shape men” for threesomes.

To be clear, Stone was advertising for men to fuck his wife while he watched. While Trump’s GOP may be cool with that, Dole’s wasn’t. Despite frantic deployment of the Trumpian tactic of blame-shifting—Stone claimed that the usual “disgruntled employee” with a “drug problem” had somehow coopered all this up—-his conservative political career appeared to be done. (He finally admitted the truth in 2008.)

Despite his ouster from mainstream politics, Stone’s public malice continued unabated. For example, he organized the celebrated Brooks Brothers Riot that disprupted the 2000 Florida recounts; has been accused of forging the 2004 Killian Memos that called into question W’s military service but, when proved fake, ended Dan Rather’s career; and was involved in the prostitution scandal that ended the political life of New York Governor Elliot Spitzer. And all the while cultivating a public persona as Best Dressed Man of 1939.

GET ME ROGER STONE

Stone’s bizarre and squalid career was famously documented in a 2016 Netflix film, “Get Me Roger Stone.” The burden of the title was, in part, that Stone wanted to be the guy you called when things were totally sideways and the only way out was to stick some dead male escorts in your opponent’s bed. A man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for, right?

And that—in part, maybe—is what the commutation signifies. Or so argued GMRS producer Dylan Blank in a recent NYT op-ed.

See, even though he rages and kicks at his campaign staff like Henry VIII in a neurosyphilis seizure, whatever rational part is left of Trump’s brain recognizes that he is in very deep electoral shit. Which shit exposes him not only to the ultimate narcissistic injury of a landslide loss, but worse, the existential threat of post-Presidential prosecution for himself and his family. He just can’t afford to lose. Thus he reasons that in order to prevail in this battle of all against all, he needs the help of the dirtiest dirty trickster he can get—Roger Stone.

Hence the commutation. Trump needs Stone’s help.

But is that all?

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE: THE PROUD BOYS

Trump’s reliance on this Homburged freak may be based on something else as well. Since 2016 Stone has cultivated an association with the Proud Boys, a ”Western Chauvinist”—i.e, white nationalist Islamophobe fascist—network of street fighters founded by Gavin McInnes, who in a move whose reasons defy inquiry, sought to refute claims of homophobia by sticking a dildo up his ass in a TV interview. (Click here for images you will not be able to unsee.) The Boys’ initiation includes getting the shit beaten out of them while reciting pop culture trivia and taking a pledge to limit masturbation to once a month—particularly burdensome in view of the rudimentary social lives of most alt.right bros. In addition to these entertainments, the Proud Boys have engaged in a lengthy campaign of public violence and intimidation, including an appearance with their fellow very fine people at Charlottesville in 2017.

Stone’s engagement with the Boys is not merely casual. He is, in fact, an affiliate member, having sworn the Boys’ oath not to apologize for creating modern civilization. (I am not making this up.) In return for the sheen of “respectability” Stone has lent them, the Boys have served as bodyguards, escorting him to and from his frequent judicial hearings and proclaiming his innocence from the courthouse steps. In chorus.

Is it a coincidence that Trump sprang a right wing thug with a following of street-fighting fascists? Incidentally, note the fellow on Stone’s left, in the buttoned-up polo? That black-and-gold shirt is the PB’s unofficial uniform.

CONNECTING THE DOTS

So let’s see. We’ve ruled out gratitude or loyalty as motives for the commutation. What does Trump need from Roger Stone that he can’t get someplace else? His expertise in the political black arts doesn’t pass muster—he’s not the only asshole in Washington, or these days, nor even the biggest. And let’s not forget that Trump is more than willing to recruit aid from shithole countries happy to remake America in their own image. So no, there’s nothing about Stone’s skill set that makes him indispensable. So what does he bring to the table that Trump wants?

Just this weekend, Trump tipped his hand. Deploying masked, anonymous federal troops in unmarked vans to Portland, with the blessing of his lovable roly-poly Interior Minister Barr—who’d previously okayed the use of tear gas against peaceful protesters so Trump could waddle across the street for a photo op— was the warmup for his election day ace in the hole: full on street violence. Weimar style.

Voter suppression has been the centerpiece of GOP election strategy for decades. It’s unavoidable—as "The Wire’s Baltimore mayoral candidate Tommy Carcetti noted, his hopes were slim because “I wake up white in a city that ain’t.” A party of old white men in an increasingly brown country faces an obvious, existential challenge. One it will ultimately lose, of course, but until then, it can eke out a few more good cycles, with their resultant Federalist Society judges, regulatory rollbacks, and hedge funder tax cuts. But only by making damn sure that minorities don’t vote. Especially in swing states.

Previously, the GOP had played what now seems like softball—gerrymandering, closing polling stations in minority districts, sowing confusion as to the election date. But that won’t work this time. Trump’s response to plague and racial crisis and his plummeting polls has thus far been to flounder and howl like a manatee chopped up in the prop. But in the clutch, unconstrained by any respect for norms, terrified by the prospect of post-presidential prosecution, he’s going to toss the GOP playbook and move with the Nazi.

The Brownshirts, or SA, were Hitler’s paramilitary before his 1933 seizure of power. They were beerhall bullies whose job was “security,” ostensibly protected the Nazi leadership at their public events, in reality intimidating its leftist opponents. It played a critical role in the elections of 1928, 1930, and 1932, showing up at the polls to fight Communist supporters and blocking access to voters in left-leaning districts. And of course, after Hitler was securely Fuhrer, they were the principal executors of the Kristallnacht pogrom.

So here’s what’s going to happen. On Election Day, in urban polling places in swing states, Proud Boys are going to show up as “pollwatchers.” And as soon as black and brown people start showing up in numbers, they’re going to start kicking ass. It doesn’t have to happen a lot. It doesn’t have to happen everywhere. But it will do a lot of damage to turnout. And the thing about Election Day is that it’s just one day, and no do-overs, full stop. So whatever damage is done can’t be undone, ever. So a second term secured by street violence can be reversed only by impeachment. And we know how that went.

After nearly two months of investigations that have mostly unfolded behind closed doors, the House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump is going public.

On Wednesday, millions of Americans will hear for the first time directly from witnesses about Trump’s alleged attempts to use foreign aid to pressure Ukraine to announce an investigation into a political rival. The impeachment probe is examining whether the President abused the power of his office for his political gain.

The first witnesses that House Democrats will bring on stage are two career diplomats: William Taylor, who serves the U.S. charges d’affaires in Kyiv, and George Kent, a top U.S. State Department official with decades of experience in Ukraine policy. They will appear together before the House Intelligence Committee. Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, whom Trump recalled to Washington in May, is expected to appear before the committee on Friday.

Since the lawmakers on the committee have already heard from Taylor, Kent, and Yovanovitch, the public hearings this week are intended to present their testimony to the public on live television. Ken Hughes, a research specialist at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center with expertise in Watergate and presidential abuses of power, said the importance of public hearings should not be underestimated. “The attention of voters and citizens will finally be focused on these particular set of facts—what the president did and when, how his own aides witnessed or learned about these activities,” said Hughes. “It will give the public an opportunity to size up these witnesses for themselves.”

Democrats expect Taylor and Kent to largely restate parts of their closed-door testimony. Both officials helped explain what Trump meant when he now-infamously told Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky in a July 25 phone call, “I would like you to do us a favor.” Both officials expressed alarm that Trump and his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani were subverting normal diplomatic channels in order to push a foreign power to announce an investigation that would benefit Trump politically.

“We want the American people to hear the evidence for themselves in the witnesses’ own words, and our goal is to present the facts in a serious and sober manner,” Rep. Adam Schiff, Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, said in a statement. “The three witnesses this week will begin to flesh out the details of the president’s effort to coerce a foreign nation to engage in political investigations designed to help his campaign, a corrupt undertaking that is evident from his own words on the July 25 call record.”

Next week, eight more U.S. officials will testify publicly before the committee, according to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff. Jennifer Williams, an aide to Vice President Mike Pence; Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, the director for European Affairs at the National Security Council; Ambassador Kurt Volker, the former U.S. special envoy to Ukraine; and Tim Morrison, a National Security Council aide will testify on Nov. 19. U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Eurasian Affairs Laura Cooper, and Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale will testify Nov. 20. Former National Security Council Senior Director Fiona Hill will testify on Nov. 21.

House Democrats’ decision to lead off the hearings with Taylor and Kent, two non-political career diplomats, is intended in part to underscore a message that Trump’s actions transcend partisan politics and warrant broad concern among foreign service officers. Taylor and Kent are two of fifteen current and former U.S. officials who testified before the House in private. Many were career diplomats and mid-level government officials who never expected to become household names. Their testimony was strengthened by skills born of years of government work: meticulous contemporaneous notes, records and memos.

According to hundreds of pages of closed-door testimonies reviewed by TIME, these current and former government officials were blunt in their characterization of the Trump team’s unorthodox actions. Democrats hope that by televising these statements, given under oath, Americans will better grasp the extent to which Trump appeared to be conducting U.S. foreign policy outside normal channels and for his own political ends. In his closed-door testimony, Taylor called the shadow diplomacy by Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani “crazy” and “weird.” Kent reported hearing that Trump “wanted nothing less than President Zelensky to go to a microphone and say investigations, Biden and Clinton.”

“The two of them saw the full scope and timeline of the president’s misconduct but sat in different positions so I think it will be an interesting story to have them both told side by side,” said one Democratic aide. “It will really set the stage for the public to understand the full storyline.”

Democrats hope Taylor’s credentials in particular will make him a compelling and credible witness. Taylor is a nonpolitical career diplomat and Vietnam veteran who previously served as ambassador to Ukraine. When he testified behind closed doors on Oct. 23, Taylor provided significant details that tied Trump directly to efforts to make military aid to Ukraine contingent on the country opening investigations that he sought for his own political gain. Taylor told investigators that it was made clear to him that the White House would continue to withhold the aid, which had already been approved by Congress, until Ukrainian officials publicly announced that they were opening probes into Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter, and into unsubstantiated allegations of Ukrainian collusion with Democrats in the 2016 election.

Tom Bossert, Trump’s former Homeland Security secretary, called the president’s insistence that Ukraine intervened on behalf of Democrats in the 2016 election “not only a conspiracy theory” but “completely debunked.”

Republicans will likely dismiss details of the months-long campaign to pressure Ukraine, arguing that Trump’s sole motive was to root out corruption in the former Soviet satellite state. “Democrats want to impeach Donald Trump because unelected and anonymous bureaucrats disagreed with President Trump’s decisions and were discomforted by his telephone conversation with President Zelensky,” House Republicans wrote in a memo circulated to lawmakers Monday evening and obtained by TIME. “The Democrat impeachment narrative flips our system of government on its head.”

These public hearings come after weeks of complaints by Republicans, who have criticized Democrats for holding secret hearings. Last week, a group of Republican lawmakers stormed the secure room where House investigators, including Republicans and Democrats, were holding hearings, triggering a dramatic, made-for-television confrontation.

Democrats expect Taylor to repeat several statements he made in the closed-door hearing, in which he remembered in “excruciating detail” the “irregular, informal channels” that had been used by Giuliani to pressure Ukraine.

Taylor’s public testimony may also strengthen Democrats’ case because his detailed description illustrates how Trump’s decision to withhold aid went against U.S. national security interests. The transcript of the almost 10-hour hearing, which spans 324 pages, shows him to be a fierce critic of blocking the U.S. military aid to Ukraine, which the country needed to confront Russia. He describes being on the front line of the conflict against Russia-backed separatists, which has killed 13,000 Ukrainians, and being acutely aware that “more Ukrainians would undoubtedly die without the U.S. military assistance.”

“The commander thanked us for security assistance, but I was aware that this assistance was on hold, which made me uncomfortable,” Taylor said.

According to his closed-door testimony, Kent, the other witness on Wednesday, will provide similarly serious details. But he is expected to offer a different opening statement than the one he presented at the closed hearing, Kent’s lawyer told TIME. Like Taylor, Kent’s deep experience in U.S. foreign policy towards Ukraine means he was keenly aware of the ways in which it was subverted by Trump and Giuliani. In his testimony, for example, he describes how Giuliani waged a “campaign of lies” about then-Ambassador Yovanovitch after he deemed her to be obstructing his efforts to get Ukraine to announce the investigation into the Bidens and Democrats, according to the transcript.

Republicans may attempt to refocus the hearings by questioning Kent about his decision, in 2015, to express concerns about Hunter Biden serving on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company. Kent informed then-Vice President Joe Biden’s office of his concerns, he told lawmakers in his testimony, but was told that there was no capacity to deal with it because Hunter’s brother Beau was dying of terminal cancer.

In a memo to members of the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, Schiff included a lengthy section emphasizing the importance of protecting the whistleblower’s identity, an issue that has become a heated point of contention during the closed-door hearings. During the testimony of Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a top Ukraine expert on the National Security Council, Republicans repeatedly pressed him on who he spoke with about his concerns. Democrats and Vindman’s lawyer accused them of trying to reveal the whistleblower’s identity.

“I’ve never seen either party ever try to out a whistleblower in the same concerted way that is going on in here,” Michael Volkov, Vindman’s lawyer, told lawmakers according to the transcript.

Hi, I'm 17 in a week & will be starting my driving lessons. I have my theory booked for a few days after & aim to pass in around 6 weeks, depending on the waiting list for the test, having 3-4 lessons a week. Driving a car isn't a problem for me, have had plenty of practise on tracks in my dads weapon ;) & have for the last 8 weeks or so been going to an empty industrial estate one or twice a week, driving my mums cooper S or occasionally my uncles M3. Just need practice with the ways of public roads from my instructor. i'm 17 and was wondering if a mini cooper would be a good first car. i never really wanted one, my one of my friends is like obsessed with them and since then i've been looking into it. i know they have 5 star safety rating so they're very safe and easy to control and can fit into small parking spaces because, well, they're small =) But how about insurance? Is that cheap? I mean if i'm getting a used one? Not a sporty model or anything. And what about maintenance? And is it fuel-friendly? Or would it be like driving a hummer? Considering what I've seen and read about it, it can either be really expensive if you buy the wrong model and the new car, OR it can be very effecient and affordable if you buy a used one and the right model. Passing a stopped school bus (which as far as i can tell is no points) they view as 8 points. My question is, can they do this? A Free Fridge for the community at 1144 Bergen Street in Crown Heights At these community-run sites, anyone is welcome to take or leave food One afternoon in May, artist and community gardener Sade Boyewa was scrolling through her Instagram feed when she caught a photo of a commercial fridge sitting outside a brownstone in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. It was stocked full with squash, canned chickpeas, carrots, and bread, and above it, there was a sign painted in bright letters that read “FREE FOOD.” “I remember thinking, this is what we need in Harlem,” she told me. “The line to the food pantry snakes around two blocks. Not everyone is fit to go and stand on line for several hours.” Like millions of other Americans, Boyewa had been laid off from her day job in March. As she worked to put together other paid projects from home, she used any leftover time she had to coordinate a free fridge of the same kind at 352 W. 116th Street in Harlem, across the street from where she’s lived for 25 years. Through Instagram, she got in touch with A New World In Our Hearts, the anarchist community organizers behind the Bed-Stuy fridge, and after a week they were able to find and deliver a donated fridge to her doorstep. After she plugged it into an outlet at her local bodega (with the enthusiastic permission of her deli guys), and stocked the stainless steel home fridge with yogurt, plantains, apples, and lettuce, some donated and some purchased, Boyewa joined the ranks of volunteer citizens running free community fridges all over the country right now. The sign on the door read, “Take what you need. Leave what you don’t,” and in Spanish, “Comidas gratis.” “People couldn’t believe it,” Boyewa said. “‘Is this for real? Is this free?’” The fallout from the coronavirus touching down in the U.S. earlier this year has been devastating, especially for New York City. When restaurants, bars, and nonessential businesses closed as a mandate of the state-imposed shutdown on April 29, millions of people found themselves out of jobs, unable to pay rent, and lacking the food they needed to survive. An estimated 1 million New Yorkers consistently went without food before the global pandemic began, and in only three months, that number had more than doubled. By mid-May the city pledged to deliver 1.5 million meals a day to the 1 in 4 New Yorkers who were now food insecure, but the $170 million plan was stretched thin and flawed. In a CBS New York report, some New Yorkers said they found the city’s food deliveries to be lacking in nutrition, or worse, spoiled. These solutions started to look like Band-Aids over a growing wound. While the city’s coordinated food service worked to correct its failings, New Yorkers were busy taking matters into their own hands. In seven locations in under four months, conventional and commercial fridges, plastered with signs of free food, were plugged into extension cords tethered to apartment buildings, corner bodegas, and businesses in three out of the five boroughs: the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. Thadeaus Umpster, a member of A New World In Our Hearts, said the organization will soon set up fridges in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, D.C., and several more locations in New York. Many of the fridges, like one that was set up outside Playground Coffee Shop in Bed-Stuy, have social media accounts that provide updates on their daily stocks — today, blueberries and radishes; tomorrow, it could be anything. In Brownsville, a predominantly black neighborhood in East New York, a free fridge was set up in early June by folks running Universe City, an urban aquaponic farm and workspace. The space and the fridge at 234 Glenmore Avenue have become hubs for organizers in the Black Lives Matter movement since the protests began at the end of May, and protesters who have taken to the streets to demand justice have inherited boxes of donated fresh produce to sustain their energy in the fight. “We’re incubating the political and social education of people in our community,” Alexis Mena, the co-founder of Universe City and one of the free fridge’s organizers, said, “so they can better understand how to take power back from the institutions who have taken it from them.” Using food as a form of protest has long and storied roots in black communities, and urban farming and the Brownsville free fridge are acts of resistance to the food apartheid that leaves many BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) neighborhoods without access to fresh, healthy food. Black people have experienced vastly disproportionate COVID-19 diagnoses and deaths to white people, so the Brownsville free fridge hopes to draw attention to the racist city-planning that has affected the health of their communities as well. “It’s the quality of our air, how close we are to landfills,” Mena said, so why should they trust the government to properly feed them? By extension of the fact that the free fridges are maintained by people in the community for people in the community, Boweya, Mena, and Pam Tietze, an artist who organized the Friendly Fridge in Bushwick, said that everyone begins to feel protective ownership over the fridges. “The deli next door has a hose and they spray down the fridge sometimes to keep it clean,” she said. “The superintendent of the building next to the fridge has become its guardian angel. He interviews people who come to the fridge; he reports to the group chat what the current stock levels are like.” On Mother’s Day, a local florist left a box of individually portioned flower bouquets with a sign: “Take a flower for mom!” Tietze set up a Venmo account to receive donations for groceries and a local artist painted a friendly face on the fridge. This was the community-centered result that Tietze had hoped for. “I wanted the fridge to self-regulate,” she said. “I’m not the fridge’s mom. I’m just the person who put it out there.” As the protests against police brutality began at the end of May, Friendly Fridge organizers set up a memorial to George Floyd with a framed photo, bouquets of flowers, and santeria candles. On a rolling gate behind the fridge, Hugo Girl, the artist who had given the Friendly Fridge a face, painted, “NO CURFEW ON JUSTICE. LET’S EAT THE 1%.” The community fridge system, while relatively novel in New York, is not an unfamiliar concept in other parts of the world. The movement was popularized in Berlin, when a volunteer-run organization called Foodsharing that has done peer-to-peer community food saving and sharing since 2012 began setting up community fridges (known as fair-teiler) across Germany in 2014. At one point, there were 350 fridges around Germany, with 25 in Berlin alone, all with the purpose of saving and redistributing perfectly good food that would otherwise go to waste. But in 2018, the German government’s food and safety regulators in Berlin cracked down on fair-teiler, causing a large number of them to be locked by their stewards or moved to more private spaces, instead of remaining free and open on the street for anyone to use any time of the day. In a paper for Geoforum in 2019, Dr. Oona Morrow, a researcher at the Wageningen University in the Netherlands, found that the regulatory fears governments have around community fridges often stem from “fear of unknowable risks.” (Namely, liability around food contamination and spoilage, and lack of official labeling and processing.) “These fears are stoked by a technocratic risk regime that places trust in businesses, scientists, and markets, but not the public,” she writes. But, as she told me by phone from Holland, the research she performed while working with SHARECITY suggests that “sharing food is not how food safety crises happen.” Findings around the E. coli outbreak in romaine lettuce in 2019, for example, pointed to the proximity of cattle to produce-growing fields in Salinas, California, as the likely source of the spread. “It’s through industrial food systems that risk is amplified.” “Community fridges are an opportunity for people to reimagine what the infrastructure of cities could be like,” Morrow said. “Fridge volunteers are prototyping a different kind of urban infrastructure that could be more caring.” Free fridges in the U.S. have some advantages over their EU counterparts, she added, because our food safety regulations are not nearly as strict as they are in countries like Germany. “With public infrastructure, there is this idea that it can’t work, people aren’t caring enough, people don’t know how to cooperate or take care of each other,” but her research has found those fears to be unfounded, she said. Plus, with the high need for food sharing and other forms of mutual aid in our current crisis, “more things are tolerated in an emergency.” Right now, there are free community fridges on every continent except Antarctica, and any community fridge coordinator can add theirs to a growing global database on Freedge.org, a volunteer community fridge network started by Ernst Bertone Oehninger in 2014. Bertone Oehninger, a Brazilian Ph.D. candidate in ecology at UC Davis in California, set up a community fridge on his front lawn in 2014. “We didn’t ask for permission before we looked into the food laws or liability laws,” he told me. “The county impounded the fridge because they said it was illegal food distribution.” But, as Bertone Oehninger pointed out in the local news at the time, the food regulation laws Freedge was being held to weren’t written to include individual food sharing. Freedge isn’t a restaurant, he reasoned, so why was it being treated that way? With help from city officials, Freedge was soon protected under California’s gleaner laws, meaning it could safely distribute produce but not home-cooked food. Now, whenever someone reaches out to Freedge asking how they can set up one in their town, the volunteer organization provides resources like information on liability, as well as open-source guides to solar-powering fridges and adding cameras to make sure stocks within the fridge are fresh. Their primary recommendations are to check the fridge once a day and clearly outline what foods are not allowed, as those regulations will vary state to state. The Community Fridge Network, which began in 2017 in the U.K., takes a more centralized, regulated approach. The fridges are donated to local communities through the country by Hubbub, an environmental nonprofit. The Community Fridge Network has clear guidelines on what can and cannot be accepted — no raw cheeses and home-cooked meals, for example, to both limit liability around allergens and prevent foods in the fridge from becoming spoiled. Each fridge has at least one coordinator who checks it daily, each fridge maintains a similar aesthetic design, and the people running each unit can receive grant money from Hubbub for maintenance and support. The primary challenge that CFN faces is that the fridges can run out of food too quickly after the stores are replenished. Clare Davies, the coordinator of a community fridge in Dorking, England, said that is only a reflection of the high need of the communities that the fridges serve. “That’s not a problem that is caused by the community fridge, that’s a problem that’s existed before the community fridge was even there.” Food pantries and government food assistance programs should in theory help to solve the problem of food insecurity, but these systems come with their own set of problems. Mel Paola Murillo, an immigrant from Honduras who is currently seeking asylum in the U.S., has found that the major advantage of the free fridge she uses in New York is that she can get food from the fridge without judgment or questions about her documentation, identity, or needs. “To find free resources is a very important part of my surviving experience in New York,” she told me. The fridge also provides a wider range of culturally relevant foods, as the donations typically come from within her neighborhood. “I like to cook food from my country, and [in the fridge] I’ve found cilantro, plantains, and nopales.” There are also pervasive stigmas around visiting food pantries to get something to eat, as one neighborhood woman told organizers of the Free Fridge. “I feel embarrassed accepting handouts,” she said, but at the Friendly Fridge, “Nobody pays any mind. It’s a big deal that I’ve had breakfast every day this week and I’ve had dinner. It’s changed everything.” The throughline between all free fridges — whether part of a centralized network or not, in a major city or not — is that they attempt to do the work that more bureaucratic and structural systems like the government won’t and formal food pantries can’t do. “The city, state, and federal government have failed on multiple levels in regards to this crisis,” Umpster, of A New World In Our Hearts, told me. The free fridge model is one way that communities can work together to support each other, while also mitigating the omnipresent excess of food waste in America. “[Unlike food pantries], we don’t coordinate or cooperate with the government. We’re not asking people to give us personal information. We’re not asking people to pray with us, we’re not a charitable organization. We’re a mutual aid group.” That distinction is important — the stigmas that come with having to ask for help are all but eradicated when anyone, anywhere, no matter their situation, can both give to and take from the fridge. While no city officials have yet to interfere or raise questions about any of the community fridges that have shown up around New York’s boroughs, Umpster said that he doesn’t anticipate strong pushback, as the “response has been universally positive.” Fridges in other cities haven’t always been so lucky — one community fridge owner in Washington state has become the center of a legal battle after authorities shut her fridge down twice. This kind of response isn’t uncommon, Bertone Oehninger explained, because “if you present the idea where the idea doesn’t exist yet, ‘no’ is very easy to say.” New York’s fridge organizers remain undeterred. “This is a people’s movement,” Boyewa told me. “And right now, people are hurting.” While Boyewa and Tietze welcome outside support and outreach from more formal systems, Mena is less optimistic that something like that could, or even should, actually happen. “No one is going to save us. They’ve proven that they don’t care,” Mena said, adding that racism has pushed his community to take matters of food distribution into their own hands. “Black, indigenous, and people of color have been set up to fail,” he added, “so the people have to come together to take the power back.” Dayna Evans is a freelance writer.
