Sometimes I think we as a society forget that while Dean forgave Castiel for s6/s7 (and that Cas knows that he's forgiven), that they never actually talked about it beyond Dean saying a bunch of romantic shit ("I'd rather have you, cursed or not" "you did the best that you could" "so?" and much much later: "I need you") in rapid succession because he's desperately trying to get Cas to stay for once in his life.

But like they haven't talked about it, which is why we get moments like in s9 where Dean references that Cas lied to him and Sam, and went forward with a highly dangerous plan that had casualties. And like, I get the vibe that a lot of people think it's mean of Dean to bring that shit up when it's clear that he's forgiven Cas, but trust and forgiveness aren't the same things. Dean never brings up that Cas broke Sam's wall ever again, but he does bring up that Cas lied to him and Sam and became power hungry because it's relevant.

Now if we look at all of this in the context of *checks notes* Cas in every single season post-s5? Pattern: Cas leaves/stops communicating with Dean/Sam -> Cas does something reckless and stupid (affectionate) because he thinks its the right thing/his mission -> Cas dies.

Which is why, despite Dean truly considering what Cas did as water under the bridge, he keeps bringing it up in later seasons. He's just tired of his friend dying.
