This is an Independent Canon divergent Isolde rp blog. I have no ties with Riot Games, nor do I claim ownership of the character or game. I simply role play the character I have grown to love and adore for so long. The only things I own on this blog are art I may or may not post unless stated otherwise.

propaganda time, featuring my other submission who happens to be entirely unrelated (also mentioning @small-artist-oc-showdown again for good measure) first things first, i'm gonna talk about hong and azul some more because i gave very little in the original post.

collectively, they're known as Mako Masks. their main focus is songwriting, but they also do a comparable thing to the news routine of existing splatoon idols that i have not managed to decide on the specifics of yet.

they have a theatre motif, specifically centering on the concept of comedy vs tragedy. it's probably obvious by looking at them, but hong is the comic one, while azul is the tragic one. their personalities reflect this, with hong being very energetic and jokestery, and azul being much more grounded, and a little melancholic.

before i go more in-depth on their characters, i should probably list their pronouns, for clarity's sake. hong uses he/him, and azul uses she/her.

hong's number 1 priority as a public figure (even if their fanbase is kinda small) is to make people laugh and give them joy. to that end, he doesn't care about turning himself into a punchline, and does so often, usually by acting childish or stupid. azul helps out with this by playing up annoyance at his antics and taking the role of "straight man" in their comedic duo.

azul maintains an aesthetic for herself most people would probably describe as "glamorously exhausted". almost every movement she makes is some combination of slow, dramatic, and elegant. part of it stems from her just not having that much energy, even outside of comparison to hong, but part of it is specifically because she wants to highlight her contrast with him. (the theatre motif was her idea, and she likes to play it up in subtle ways.) her self-esteem isn't super high, but she enjoys acting a little pretentiously when it doesn't undermine her image as the more serious one of the group. whenever she's feeling particularly down, hong has them shift their ink colors to purple so they match, symbolizing their bond and mutual support of each other. (vice versa applies too, but that happens a lot less often.)

in their spare time, they both enjoy doing research on the lives and cultures of humans (which are extinct in the splatoon setting). they prefer to look up archives of the internet from human times, but they also like learning about physical human stuff. this is also how they decided on their stage names in-universe, by looking up their favorite colors in different human languages. they only really do that kind of thing as a hobby though, so they're not exactly experts in the field. (also as a sidenote, azul has read homestuck because of this interest.)

okay, that took up more space than i expected, but now i can move on to the other submission i teased at the start of this post.

amelia comes from a roleplay i was in that was loosely based on danganronpa and your turn to die, but was really its own thing in terms of lore, just taking stuff like premise, format, and character archetypes from them. in amelia's case, she holds the title of ultimate biologist, meaning she's the best biologist in the world, at least among high schoolers.

she's typically very energetic and full of whimsy, but she has her limits and being in an environment where murder is rewarded with freedom as long as you can avoid being caught definitely tested them. in part because of unique circumstances where the first murderer stuck around after being caught instead of getting the typical execution (and in part because i was losing the mental energy needed to properly rp as an energetic and goofy character), she became notably less mentally healthy as time went on, culminating in her giving in and committing murder in the fourth chapter. the possible outcomes were escape and death, and in her mind at the time, either was preferable to staying in the killing game environment. she ended up unable to defend herself in the class trial, partly out of guilt, and was executed as a result.

i like her character a lot, so that incredibly depressing story arc isn't the only one she has, but that setting is the only one she's in that has decently fleshed-out lore, so.

i guess i can give more info on her character separate from the lore of any specific setting, so i'll do that now. - she's trans. the ref sheet is a lot more non-committal on this, partly because it's kinda old, partly because i think it would be fun to write her into an actual story in the kind of way where it's never explicitly stated that she's trans but there are a truckload of hints to it, but she's honestly just enough of a self-insert that it would feel weird to me for her to not be trans. - she doesn't live within new york city, but she has adopted a feral pigeon from there at least once. - biology is obviously her strong suit, but she loves all fields of science, even if her appreciation tends more towards the aesthetic for the others, rather than how enjoyable it is for her to actually do research in them. - her lab coat is a comfort item for her. she doesn't always wear it, especially within her own home, but she does so often enough for it to be a signature part of her look. plus, the giant pockets are just useful in general.

and uh, that's it i guess. thanks for reading through all this if you have. i'm a little self-conscious about how much i put into this even though that's kind of the point of a post like this, lol

How many works do you have on AO3?

37, though another one is going up tomorrow because haunted AO3 hours started and I don't want to post it in the middle of the night on a Monday. Also like 4 or 5 more in reserve from zines/bangs. I'm kinda impressed with myself, but also, side-eyeing y'all with fic counts in the 100s. Phenomenal. Effervescent.

How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

In chronological order of first fic on AO3: Percy Jackson, Soul Eater, Steven Universe, My Hero Academia, Dragalia Lost, Avater: the Last Airbender, the Witcher, and Genshin Impact! That's 7 fandoms and I'm not counting Homestuck (I only wrote OC stuff) or D&D (same thing).

I also have works from Axis Powers: Hetalia and Katekyo Hitman Reborn! on Fanfiction dot hell that none of you will ever see. I definitely posted and deleted a Twilight OC fic once.

Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

To quote Mido: I do, but not consistently. Q^Q I read them all and I really want to reply to them all, but I very frequently simply to not have the energy. I have it posted on my AO3 profile, though, so hopefully it doesn't hurt anyone's feelings... I have recently been trying to at least answer all new incoming comments and not let the backlog increase! (That said, the backlog is over 100.)

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I don't tend to do angsty endings (I am a hard lover of angst with a happy ending), but I've written some questionable and bittersweet ones. I think arguably the best contendor for angstiest ending is probably Kindred Spirit. I wrote it to low key revenge myself on @thegc4life for insisting that Shinsou gets a hug (he does! technically!) and it certainly ended ominously.

Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

As much as I love "Edward Elric gets transported into X universe and proceeds to kick everyone's ass" crossovers, I don't relaly write any. I do enjoy full transplant AUs, though, and the one I recently posted on AO3 is an MHA-at-Hogwards AU called the Birds and the Mares that I wrote for the HP/BNHA Zine!

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Deeeeepends on what you mean by 'hate.' :X has gotten two comments (one much politer than the other, haha) complaining about my use of the r-slur in Shinsou's internal narrative in one of the chapters, but one person backpedaled and said they understood the purpose of it while the other (more vehement) one never replied to my explanation. That's all, though!

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Yeah. It's never going on my main AO3 (and the one time it did, I orphaned the fic). I have a side account I might post it on once I get over the fact that people who know me also know about the account. It's all 100% PWP of stuff I personally am into, and I have a very specific set of things I'm into, so... idk, feels a little personal! ^^"

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

No, but I've had people adopt general concepts I used (fabulous!) and steal my RP OCs back in ye olde fantroll days (not at all fabulous! incredibly hurtful, actually). I am vehemently opposed to plagiarism, even of concepts. It feels so gross.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Someone in the comments mentioned that they are translating Bloodied Hound into Russian and I am SO EXCITED. I desperately want to read it. Of all the languages, it happened to be the only other one I'm decently literate in! I also want to show my grandparents. I really hope the person follows through. <3

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I've roleplayed a lot, but I can't see myself ever co-writing a fic. I'm not even sure how it works, to be honest!

What’s your all time favourite ship?

Urgh. Pass. I can't pick one. Perils of a multishipper.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I was going to proudly say "I never post things I don't plan on finishing!" but in reality that is a lie, because Falling Down A Rabbit Hole exists from back in 2015 and is in fact the reason I made that rule for myself. ^^" Honestly, what's there still holds up, but the reality is that I didn't actually come up with a plot, so there's nowhere for it to go.

What are your writing strengths?

Interesting/relatable/funny dialogue, and also writing feelings in a 'show, don't tell!' kind of way that leaves strong impressions with people!

What are your writing weaknesses?

Plotting out long stories with good pacing! People thought Damocles had a plot, apparently? Joke's on you, it was a series of "I wanna see this happen" scenarios that I made Hawks suffer through and subsequently strung together like a haphazard multicolor plastic bead necklace that I told everyone was actually pearls.

That's why all my stories after Damocles are either short or split into a series. Shinsou's Bad Days is my attempt at proper pacing, hence it being so episodic.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I'll do it if I know the language well enough (so, Russian and ASL, I don't trust my casual Japanese), but I'm generally a stickler for making things come off naturally, so I otherwise will instead try to find the closest tonal equivalent in English (such as having Childe call Zhongli "professor" instead of "xiansheng"). Sometimes there just isn't one (like Kazuha calling Beidou 'big sis' but in a way that doesn't sound kiddish and overly casual for him), though, which sucks. :( Language is cool!

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

T. Twilight. QUQ I wish that fic still existed, it was like a single chapter of two multicolored hair OCs befriending Alice Cullen and being cool. I deleted it but I SHOULDN'T HAVE. IT WAS HISTORY.

What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

This totally changes with each new slew of fics I post. I think currently it is Dog-Tired because despite being unsatisfied with the title, I think the story itself turned out amazing. I also am extremely happy with the entire Shinsou's Bad Days series (including upcoming installments).

re: the post i reblogged about how People Can Read Your Tags And Additions, here are some supplemental Thoughts! as an artist i LOVE when people write in the tags or write comments. i can safely say that most artists on tumblr always look forward to seeing nice messages in the tags and that this is one of the features that makes tumblr rewarding to post art on. i also enjoy it for my non-art posts that have made some rounds as well, i LOVE reading tiny ramblings from a stranger’s life that they felt like sharing in the whispers of tagworld. i just really like it, even if it also means sometimes people just add Bad Takes or try to start an argument. but of course, not every feedback feels as nice as “omg i love this” or “i adore how you drew X”. i think there’s been several PSAs about how “i hate the ship but i love this art” is not the compliment you think it is (i personally don’t mind this type of comment so much, but i see why it’s upsetting) and also how it can feel very uncomfortable if someone tags art of an OC or a character that is very personal to you with “kin”. i do not remember all the Weird and Uncomfortable comments i’ve gotten ever, but here are some examples that are just... Weird. - someone adding “reblogging so i can pretend i drew this” on my art post - some nsfw roleplaying blogs “““adopting”“““ my OC and naming it in the notes of a commission i paid an artist to draw for me - fandom specific blog reblogging art of a character from an entirely different series, tagging it with a character it reminds them of even knowing it’s not that character, and then seeing other people reblog it from them tagging it with the wrong character... - this was on twitter, but someone replied to a piece of fanart i had drawn of a character i obviously love enough to spend hours drawing, to say “i wish this character wasn’t so shit tier”. worth noting that the creator of the character was also tagged in the reply. ah twitter, PLEASE change - also on twitter. someone writing really cryptic and antagonistic replies to me for drawing a human AU of a character who has grey skin in and horns in canon (i will specify this was not homestuck). it turns out that they just really hated that she wasn’t grey, but the whole thing was pretty upsetting because it seemed at first that they hated that i had drawn her as Not White. WELP like, being on the internet where everyone is just a url to you, it’s not always easy to realize how you come across to someone, or that you’re playing very fast and loose with boundaries and ettiquette. i sympathize a lot, i think we’ve all been there! but it’s nice to remember that like, people will see it, and if you make someone uncomfortable just once, it can be really hard to come back from that.

Can you shortly describe us your writing history? How did you start off? How did you come across fanfiction?

I started writing when I was very young! I was a huge reader, and even before I was writing stuff down I was a storyteller. It’s a really important part of my family & how we communicate with each others and others.

My first experience with fanfiction was when I was,, 7 or 8? That sounds about right. I hand wrote a fanfiction called “ShoppingCats” which something between warrior cats and Cats vs Dogs, but also made primarily of my OCs (+ a handful of warriors characters I liked). I still have most of it, it’s sitting in my desk drawer in it’s original binder, since my mother saved it.

I came across fandom spaces / online fanfiction in 2012 with fanfiction.net, and published my first fanfiction in 2013 (under Rosae-Sif on fanfiction.net). I’ve taken breaks as my interests changed & life got chaotic, but I’ve always enjoyed retelling stories that I hear and changing them to suit me more / explore new themes, so I’ve stuck with it after all this time.

Do you have a writing philosophy that helps you overcome challenges in writing?

Yes! I write for myself above all else. It’s fun to write stuff for other people sometimes, and I like getting feedback and what not, but I never let that be the focus of my writing. I always try to write what I want to be reading, so when I go back and reread what I’ve written, more often than not I find I’ve produced something that makes me happy, and that helps keep me going when a lot of other things couldn’t.

Could you describe your writing environment? (workplace, prefered writing tools, fandom discourse, discourse with friends)

Uhhh, I don’t really have any one set thing. I mostly write on my laptop, sometimes I use a notebook + pen. I have 5$ fountain pen that I got that I really love when I have writer’s block.

I think the most consistent “workplace” for me is actually discord/my friends. Almost all of my AUs/fics/ideas start as me storytelling (either typing things out or out loud) to someone else. That’s where the spark comes from, and then that slowly is refined through several iterations until I have something I like.

I really like taking long walks with headphones & nobody else around. That’s when a lot of the very early forms of my favorite ideas come to me. It’s a key part of my writing process the few times I get stuck on stuff too. I just go walk till I figure it out.

I don’t really get involved in discourse much. I like debating people, but I try to stay away from destructive stuff and just have my own fun corner where I create things. I’m in fandom for fun, and I refuse to let me experience be tainted by people who try to turn it into Discourse Central.

What inspires you to write and post in and for a fandom? What triggers your headcanons? Does your educational background influence your writing?

As I mentioned before, I write and post primarily for myself! I have a lot of ideas in my head all the time, and things I want to see, so I create those things and then put them here. It’s fun when other people interact with me + add onto my ideas + create things in response!

My headcanons are usually just kinda,,,, coming out of my brain. I think it’s just how I am. I have a question or a thought and I start looking into it and before I know it, a whole new thing has come out of it.

I think my family actually influenced a lot of my writing style more than anything else. I mean, I was homeschooled for a long time, and my parents were very encouraging of whatever weird projects I was creating (my dad once even let me cut down and drag actual brambles into the basement to create a warriors style fort). I was allowed to dress however I wanted (during high school I worn nothing but PJ pants b/c they were most comfy for me, and also I had/have several capes that I would rotate through), I was allowed to dye my hair (still do! it’s current a side shave in red + purple + blue!), and I was encouraged to just,,, be weird and happy. I think that shows in how I write. I pursue the ideas I want to go after, I indulge myself, I commit to thinks and I focus more on what I want to write rather than what I feel I should write.

That being said, a lot of science nerding that comes out in my writing is def from my educational background. I’ve got a bachelors and stuff. I did take some writing classes, but to be honest, I think my fanfiction experience influenced those a lot more than they influenced my fanfiction (years and years of writing constantly and quickly paid off in college where I would BS papers the night before and get top marks on it).

In how far does your fandom experience influence your writing?

Hmm, I don’t think it does that much? I mean, for the BNHA fandom in particular, I think that seeing all the cool content + ideas other people create really keeps my brain chugging along and creating new things, and god, having seen people make fanart and fanfiction for my stories has been one of the best feelings I’ve ever experienced, but I don’t think that’s really changed how I’m writing.

At my core, I’m still doing the same thing my 8 year old self was doing with her pencil and that binder full of paper. I take the strange thoughts out of my head, and I follow them onto the paper until I create something that makes me happy.

I’ve had some negative experiences of course. I mean, everyone does. They’ve all been fairly minor, mostly just people trying to tell me I’m wrong about stuff that’s either in an AU that’s already not supposed to be canon, or stuff I’m right about. Most of the time it’s just annoying. Sometimes it’s concerning. I ignore or delete the annoying stuff, I don’t want to give it any of my time or attention.

The concerning stuff I try to reply to. It’s been rare, but sometimes I get comments on certain fics trying to tell me what’s being depicted in my fic isn’t abusive when it absolutely is. I try to correct that and link to resources when I do get that. I usually don’t get a reply, but a few times I’ve had people realize that what they thought was normal was actually abusive behavior. I’m happy that I’m able to help people come to that realization.

In how far do you work with others to create fan content? And what ideas do you integrate in your writing?

Hmmm, I’ll be honest, I’m not quite sure how to answer this one. I don’t exactly work with others when creating my fan content? All of my writing (save one RP collab homestuck fic from ages ago) is done by me exclusively, and most my ideas are also mostly from my own brain. Although I will say one exception to that is @windschildfanfictionwriter whose an amazing bnha writer I chat with fairly frequently when I need help figuring something out.

It’s less of “working” with people, and more discussing things/ideas, and being excited about stuff. Sometimes literally all I need is someone to be my rubber duck while I talk about an idea for 2-3 hours to get it solidified. People in my discord server often help me by betaing (editing/reviewing) my wips. My adhd means I often make weird mistakes, and they’re wonderful at helping me catch that.

As for ideas I pull into my writing, it’s hard to pick out specific ones. I think I kinda create + absorb + integrate lots of stuff at once. A lot of the times my ideas don’t come from things other authors write, but instead come from things other authors didn’t write. When I see an thought/idea/thread in a story that isn’t followed up on, or isn’t handled how I think it should be handled, that often inspires me to either use a similar base concept or similar thought but in the way I wish it had been done.

Are there certain steps you take/decisions you make when/before responding to a post/prompt?

Not really? I tend to just go with whatever comes to me or what I already had prepared. I’m rather impulsive, so unless it’s a delicate subject matter, I roll with whatever’s going on.

I do always make myself take a step back before responding to stuff that annoys me/any sort of anon hate. I have to remind myself it’s not worth the effort and I should focus on positive/fun stuff. I’ll admit though, I have a very combative nature that can get the better of me sometimes. I’ve gotten better at that though! Hooray for proper adhd medication to help prevent destructive stimulus seeking behavior and therapy! Although I do still like to debate stuff for fun, I just don’t let myself get hostile about it.

When and why did you decide to host writing events like your fake fics event? What was the purpose and how did you approach the title prompts?

Oh, I just saw the post and thought it looked fun so I reblogged it. Stuff like that is mostly an impulse more than anything else.

I just kinda went with the flow for the titles. God, I got so many of those, I still have a lot of them sitting in my inbox, most of which I probably won’t ever post. For the ones I did do though, I picked ones that sounded like fic titles I would actually use, and then asked myself what sort of story I would use that title for. Then I just kinda wrote whatever came to me.

How would you describe the difference between writing alone and writing spontaneously with others (first in creating fan theories and headcanons and second in creating fanfiction)?

Hmmm. This one is also a bit hard. It’s rare I truly “write alone”, most of my stories start as a form of oral storytelling and then are adapted to “proper” writing. Most of my theories/headcanons start the same way.

You’ll notice a lot of my posts start with “Also” “Okay” or “I’ve been thinking” or “You know”. When I’m writing my headcanon/theory posts, it’s all written very conversationally because I’m still following my family’s storytelling in a way. It’s a public post, but I’m not just making statements to a void. I’m still talking to people, addressing them, leading them through stuff. It’s just how I communicate on a very fundamental leave.

I’m still writing for myself, I’m creating for myself, but I’m doing it with others. I’m telling a story constantly, and sometimes I’m telling that story to myself, but I’m still telling it to someone.

I think you can read that in my fics, with the perspective I tend to use. I use limited third person POV, but when I’m writing, I try to write it how the character I’m writing from the POV of would tell their own story. I’m not just describing what’s happening, I’m letting this character tell their story through their own voice, to others, to me. It’s a core part of my writing, and that makes it hard to say that it was ever really written alone.

Do you think knowing that others read and can comment on your texts subconsciously influences your writing?

I mean, it’d be impossible for it not to. But I don’t think it influences me that much. I’m still writing for myself most of the time, and I hold onto my bullshit tightly. I don’t change my writing based on what I think other people want to see from me.

That being said, it’s still something I think about. It’s more of a conscious choice, but specifically regarding my stories that have abuse in them, I try to connect in elements of realism and common underrepresented traits/habits of abuse (which I do try to check via research when I can) and ensure that they are then called out as what they are. I’ve gotten a number of comments/asks/discord messages from people telling me that my works helped them realize they were in a crappy situation / understand what they were going through, and that’s something that’s important for me.

I think The Green Eyed Monster is an example of that, where I explore platonic stalking/obsession/pressuring. It’s something I don’t see taken seriously often enough, so I wanted to frame it in a serious but realistic light and make it clear that what was happening was wrong and harmful. I wanted to explore this concept, but I purposefully did it in a way that I hoped would help others who might’ve dealt with it on some level understand it for what it was, and I think it really shows. In the comments of that fic, there’s a lot of very personal responses/stories from people who went through similar experiences. I think that’s important, so it’s something I try to do when I can.

The other thing is I do 100% put references/lines in certain stories with an evil grin on my face knowing that a certain handful of my commenters are going to rip their hair out over it, either because they have no idea what I mean by it, or they know exactly what I mean by it. But hey, I’m a hurt/comfort writer at heart, so you can hardly blame me.

What motivated you to create a story where your readers can decide for an ending (name)?

Oh, uh, “Seven Year Old Katsuki Has The Ability To Kill A Grown Man And No Concept Of Legality”.

I actually can’t remember the exact inspiration for this one? I think I saw uhhh, Markiplier, playing a text adventure game, and I got curious about creating something similar.

I considered using a platform meant for text based games, but true to my family’s long history of needlessly complicating things and creating things where they aren’t meant to be created out of some mix of spite and creative hubris, I decided I wanted to make it on A03 instead. I looked up a style formatting guide, and went to work.

That whole project took like 1-2 months, around school work and everything else. It was created entirely using links that sent you to the next page. That’s it. That’s the only ‘code’ functionality I had to work with. So I made a whole paper map of the routes, separating them out into “steps” and then created unique text blocks for each step based on prior choices. I used a secret point system for one of the main routes, and ended up with 97 unique steps, and 155 different text blocks/variations.

Fun project. A03 was having some trouble/going down right after I released it, and to this day, certain members of the discord server still blame me for that as I was forcing the website into bullshit it was not meant to contain.

Is there anything else you consider important in your writing process that you would like to tell us?

Nothing I can think of off the top of my head. Other than maybe I have an African Gray named Cecil, and sometimes when I’m not ready to share an idea with humans, I’ll talk it out with him first. He’s an excellent listener sometimes, and by that I mean he’s usually ignoring me or I’m giving him scratches and he’s not paying my rambling any mind.

Though sometimes I get lucky and when I finish up a point and ask for his opinion, he’ll just look at me for a moment and say “I love you.” He does it because I’ll always cave and give him treats since I’m weak for him, but it still makes me smile.

1/4; Dude your blog is so epic, you're amazing at this, omg!! Anyways, could I get a She-Ra, Into the Spiderverse, and Homestuck/Hiveswap matchup(s)? The ♥️♦️♠️ ones. I'm a trans biromantic demisexual man, INFP and 2w3. Derse mage of time, i am cancerous ♋. When people first meet me I'm pretty polite and shy, but everyone tells me I go from christian white boy to cursing sailor in a matter of seconds. I'm a huge tease and constantly goofing around, hyuk hyuk.

2/4; I'm hella loyal to all my friends, and my friend group is small but super tight. I kind of rope everybody into my friend group from other groups, so everybody knows me but the rest of my friends don't know each other a ton. I'm kind of the group translator and therapist cuz of that. I hate conflict so I'll do anything I can to keep everybody peaceful. I have PTSD so I'm a super nervous person, constantly coming up with back up plans named after the entire alphabet. High strung babyyy!!!

3/4; draw a lot, usually me and my friend's OC's. Or inside jokes to harass my friends with later. I love darker art and music though, it's like my secret hobby. I'm constantly writing these odd metaphorical lyrics, they aren't great but they aren't terrible either lmfao. Idk if you could tell but I talk a lot. My mind's always running. She-Ra: Bow!

- Bow would get along great with you, especially at first, when you’re being polite and a bit shy. He wouldn’t dislike your real personality at all, but it might have been a bit overwhelming for him if that’s the side of you he saw right away, so your shyer side would make him feel more comfortable when first getting to know you.

- He loves to mess around and have fun with friends when able to-he can be quite serious in tough situations, but when he’s not in a situation like that, having an s/o that can make him laugh and keep him engaged and excited during whatever activity you’re doing together.

Into the Spiderverse: Peter B Parker!

- Peter is also loyal to his friends and loved ones-so much so that sometimes he struggles with letting people become close to him in case he gets them hurt. Breaking down those walls could be difficult, but once you do, you’d have an extremely loyal s/o that would match your own loyalty to him.

- Since he’s pretty hesitant about letting people in, your ability to make a lot of different friends would be really helpful in keeping him social. He can be a bit awkward when first meeting people too, so he’d really appreciate your help with social stuff from time to time.

Homestuck/Hiveswap: Eridan (matesprit), Feferi (morail), and Karkat (Kismesis)!

- Being your friend group’s “therapist” probably means that you’re a very compassionate and patient person, which is definitely what Eridan would need in a healthy relationship. Someone who is willing to listen and try and help him with sorting out his feelings would quickly gain his attention.

- Keeping the peace with Eridan might be a bit difficult, especially at first, but with an s/o he truly cares for, he’d try his best to make sure he isn’t causing too many problems if it makes them anxious or uncomfortable. There would be some hiccups along the way, but for the most part,

- Ferferi is a pretty go with the flow person, so while she wouldn’t think all your backup plans are a bad thing, she would try her best to work with you to be less nervous and maybe get you to attempt to live in the moment and not come up with so many plans if something goes wrong.

- She loves creativity, so she’d really enjoy seeing your draw and create art! That might be a fun activity you guys can do together while talking about what’s been going on in both of your lives and what you can help each other with as morails.

- Karkat is also someone who tends to ramble and go off on tangents, so he might be annoyed at your own susceptibility for doing the same. By showing your annoyance with each other, you may both become better at concentrating on conversations.

- Karkat also has issues with his self worth and truly standing up for himself. Seeing that same flaw in someone else would make him irritated with that person. Having each other to call the other out when they’re not standing up for themselves or being self-deprecating would help you both out.

Xanatl Cambre, or whatever!

I read homestuck the first time when I was 13 and now that I’m rereading it I realized I processed almost 0 things in it the first time. So this is BASICALLY my first homestuck oc as someone who understands what the hell is happening in homestuck. I’m only about 3000 pages in, so I might have some misunderstandings still, sorry! Please go crazy telling me what I could fix or change, and I also have 0 clue for his appearance soooo.

Okay! I’ll do my best to tighten this character up a bit!

Name: Xanatl Cambre

Pronounced “Shan-uh-teal Cam-bray” (for the Aztec god Xolotl, and the coloration of darker axolotl’s- axanthic + the Spanish words for walk and fire/light)

Camnar is a seven-sweep-old violet-blooded troll who failed to fully complete his metamorphosis, for some reason or another- it happens! He possesses an extra set of fully functioning arms, a small flippy-flappy finny-tail-nub, and big bright purple shiny eyes. Everything else seems like it’s grown in okay, probably. Though he was fully capable of surviving his grub trials, his defects are admittedly uncomfortable enough to maybe have earned culling when he was only a few sweeps old, if not for [name here], a jade-blood with a penchant for healthy freaks and everything there is to learn about them (ESPECIALLY messed-up metamorphisizers) assisting in chopping off the extra bits every once in a while when drones come around. And definitely NOT keeping them in a walk in freezer to study. He’s not crippled or weakened by any of them, anyways, they’re just weird to look at- his eyesight might not be great, but he wouldn’t admit it.

Fire, salamanders in general, the Aztec god Xolotl, and all around childish imbecility are all pretty big parts of and inspiration for his character.

Hmmm. I feel like this passage comes off as fairly ableist, so watch your language here (i.e. “freaks,” “crippled,” “childish imbecility,” etc.). There is nothing wrong with a jadeblood being interested in mutants who remain healthy or in Xanatl not being weakened by losing body parts or even in him being childishly careless but language matters and I don’t feel comfortable letting it slide.

Interests: Penchant for outdoor land activities, especially camping. Loves using the time on those camp-outs to start fires, make star-maps, and attempt to commune with the dead through rituals found on old forums (with little success).

I like this bit as an emphasis on the fire theme, and I actually really like that you made a seadweller with that fire theme!

A very keen interest in the occult and black magyks generally, but too lazy to go all the way with it, and too scared to perform it in his underwater home. A notable interest in weather-tracking, especially large storms and how they grow, change, and die. Mild inclinations to cannibalize other trolls- luckily, most don’t fit in his mouth.

WGAT

Finds great joy in training his lusus to do tricks and assist in hunting for dinner. A great cook! Especially loves spicy food (mustard flowers grow around his hive, and he uses their seeds/”eye of newt” for a kick a lot of the time). General propensity to put whatever he can fit into his mouth in his mouth that caused a lot of sickness as a young troll. One of his favorite non-food things to eat that isn’t necessarily dangerous are agave americana plants, which he grows and keeps all over the top floor of hive (he probably could not keep any other plants alive). Spends a lot of time with [insert jadeblood’s name], but mostly out of the obligation of their friendship, because he’s kind of tired of her cutting his fingers off to study their regrowth. He’s also mildly obsessed with siren stories and myths, but he doesn’t really know why.

He lives in a two-story hive. The lower story sits below the water in a somewhat shallow muddy canal, and the top half hugs the shoreline. He spends most of his time in the bottom half, though.

Ooooh I really like that setup!

Personality: He’s kind of a coward. Very averse to change, but not fully content in his quiet life. He doesn’t particularly like company and when other trolls are around he feels urges to hurt them until they go away/are digested. Those urges don’t make him uncomfortable or guilty. It’s natural! Despite enjoying his outside time, most things he indulges in are sedentary- he’s very lazy and drowsy most hours of the night. He’s very defensive of his interests and his home, a little insecure in general. His high caste boosts his self esteem and his mutations knock it down- though he’s very removed from his society as a whole, self isolating with abandon, he dreams of mingling with the upper class in the deep ocean. Every troll and lusus around would probably kill him if he tried though, haha! He doesn’t like to talk about his emotions, or his future.

Wow unfortunate mood.

Special Abilities: None! Not notably strong, compared to any of his peers. A pretty normal kid/fish. Well, his extra arms and tail have some regenerative properties- he’s not sure if this extends to the rest of his body, and he refuses to test it.

Strife Specibus: Mandible-kind. Xanatl’s teeth are fairly small and underdeveloped, sharp but tiny. He has a set of big dentures he fits over his own teeth, fixed from a few native canal beasts lost teef.

Ooooh I really like that! You could also maybe have him fashion Greek-fire like molotov cocktails that he is verrrry reticent to use since it would burn his house down possibly.

Fetch Modus: Not sure! Maybe something to do with those lame circular life-cycle charts. Or a call to lotl’s regenerative abilities, like it breaks a piece off the item and it has to regrow so he can use it.

Hmmmm. What about a MITOSIS MODUS, which accepts an item and begins the process of cell division. For the next 24 hours, the item is inaccessible, but after those 24 hours he has two of the item!

Symbol and Meaning: Oh, no idea.

I’ll explain a little more down under title assignation, but I think Aquamini, Sign of the Idiosyncratic works exceptionally well.

Handle: neotenticSalamancer OR neotenicNecramander ? I wasn’t sure if it HAD to follow the GCAT thing, and if it did, what to use.

You don’t have to follow GCAT! Those trolltags were specific to Hussie’s narrative and you don’t have to adopt that convention. I actually really like neotenicNecromander it’s cute.

Quirk: So I have two ideas for this:

replaces “sh” sounds with “x”, misspells often, not one to xout or use capital letters in general, and ends sentences with his tail =>

Ooooh I like the first one for readability! Like yes leetspeak is a valid quirk but also I like when people break from that.

Lusus: Giant salamander-sized two-faced Xoloitzcuintli-type amphibious woofbeast. Not sure what to call this guy! Maybe “Mudpapi”, like mudpuppy.

I love that nickname :D

Land: Land of Tilapia and Lightning, LOTaL (haha). Big beasts and big storms both threatening to swallow him.

I super appreciate the acronym so I wanna keep that, but the first word of the Land usually related to its feel and the second to its quest. I can kiiiinda see how you could build a quest around lightning but the Vibe being tilapia doesn’t quite track for me. What about Land of Torches and Lightning, so it’s a bright planet but with two light sources trying to extinguish one another?

Title: I’m not sure I want him to ever god-tier because of his crippling fear of death and change. Like he would probably just blatantly refuse to, and stay content with being at the top of the echeladder pre-god tiers. I don’t know what his title would be, it’s a tough one! It’d be funny to make him a seer (for axolotl’s terrible eyesight, and the myth of xolotl crying his literal eyes out), but he’s probably a page. Of what? I’unno.

:) I think he is for SURE a Page of Doom then. He has so much to do with death and rot and a lack of embracing that, and I can see potential for the character to really grow into that.

Lunar Sway: Derse? I’m inclined to want to give him both, because of the minor twin theming, but not sure what the rules are there.

Ehhhh his personality is a lot more Derse with the desire for control over his circumstances. There are certainly cases where characters can have two moons but I don’t think this is it.

Fictober 2019 Day 1

Prompt #1: “It’ll be fun, trust me.”

Fandom: Pokemon (Based off of the events of Pokemon Sun), Homestuck (very slight though like, the homestuck is simply a facilitator for the pokemon)

Ships: Slight onesided Female!OC x Lillie, Platonic Female!OC x Hau, mentioned Female!OC x Female!OC

Rating: T for Teen

Warnings: Death mention, Swearing

“It’ll be fun, I promise.” “Hau. I am the first ever champion of the Alola Pokemon League. Sure, I might not know a lot of stuff about Alola given that I came here what, a few months ago? But, last I checked, specifically meeting up with a legendary pokemon that could smite us right where we stand, because of a weird dream that felt real, isn’t really anyone’s idea of fun.”

To Vriskaya, Alola was…Interesting to say the least. Even when she first arrived here, somewhat reluctantly as she was perfectly fine staying staying in Kanto MOM, however it wasn’t a huge loss because at least she met nice people. Like Lillie, who was so cool and amazing and actually really pretty, and stood up to her BITCH of a mom like a bo-, okay maybe Vriskaya had a little bit of a crush on her, but that’s all it was! Besides, friends are just as good, admittedly it would be pretty hard anyways to go further, as Lillie was all the way in Kanto now; helping out her mom with that therapy thing that Bill guy made. Which would, of course, help get those neurotoxins out of her mom’s head. And then, there were the dreams. Hell, they usually felt so real, that it was hard to realize that they were dreams at first. One thing about it that was really weird though, was that they didn’t start happening until she met Tapu Koko. She never told anyone before now because they were just dreams, nothing more, nothing less. And that brought it to the present. Where, after being unable to sleep due to missing Lillie already, despite it only have been about two months since she left. Vriskaya decided to talk to Hau, since hey, he missed her too so why not try and see if the two of them could feel better by talking to each other. And after talking about multiple things, including how bullshit it was that it was only until NOW that Vriskaya’s mom had unpacked all of their things, as she had LOADS of time on her hands when Vriskaya was out doing the Island Challenge, she had brought up the dreams. And then it all went sideways.

“I’m just saying, if they felt so real, then maybe they aren’t dreams y’know?” Hau said, shrugging slightly. Vriskaya then laughed a bit at the seemingly preposterous suggestion, “What are they then? Memories of a past lifetime? Come on! They are just dreams! Sure they are lifelike, but hey, some dreams can be.” She explained, because what else could they be but dreams? “Well, they could be memories. You’ve heard that story about the legendary beasts right? Well it could be like that!” He said, thinking of the story he read while in Malie City about the legendary beasts and how they came into being. Vriskaya nodded and then said,”Well, yeah, but! That was a special case, and that was specifically with POKEMON and I’m not even sure what I saw were even of this world! Not to mention, I have never seen a Ho-oh, and I am pretty sure the Tapu do not have that kind of ability. Besides, why would I be having some dead person’s memories? I am just me.” Seriously, other lifetimes? Yeah right! Sure, it was definitely within certain pokemons’ powers to bring the dead back to life, but from another world? Of course not!

And that just got him excited, because of course it did. “Well then, no time like the present to find out what’s up with it right?” He said while getting up, and offering a hand to his friend. She gingerly took his hand, and used it to pull herself up. “You are kidding me right? We’re seriously going to go to the Tapu about this?” She said warily, not entirely sure what was going on inside Hau’s head, and she’s not sure if she liked it. From what she heard while doing the challenge, the Tapu were nothing if not fickle. Which, actually makes sense given that they were fairy types, and sometimes fairy types were like that. Vriskaya’s mind going back to when she met her mimikyu, and how it had been several hours before she had found the little bugger, not even counting how long it took her to catch it. Conversely, Hau’s smile showed that he was definitely serious. “C’mon, you said that you started getting them when you met the Tapu right? Well, maybe the Tapu can shed some light on it!” Vriskaya sighed, she knew that it was a lost cause when Hau got something in his head, whether it be eating 100 spicy malasadas in a row, or challenging her at the league everyday for a month, he would stick to it no matter what.

Hau noticed how it seemed like she wasn’t completely on board with his decision. So then he smiled and said, “It’ll be fun, I promise.” Vriskaya then replied bluntly, “Hau. I am the first ever champion of the Alola Pokemon League. Sure, I might not know a lot of stuff about Alola given that I came here what, a few months ago? But, last I checked, specifically meeting up with a legendary pokemon that could smite us right where we stand, because of a weird dream that felt real, isn’t really anyone’s idea of fun.” She wasn’t exactly enthused with his snap-decision, but hey, who knows what might happen. “I’m still gonna come but I am not entirely sure who would call what we’re going to do ‘fun’.” She said, doubting his words about it being fun. “Hey! It could be fun! Who knows, maybe you might wrestle with it!” He said, with his seemingly never-ending optimism. And, with that last remark, Vriskaya facepalmed. “Yes, because I could totally wrestle with a Tapu.” She said sarcastically.

She then shook her head and grabbed her bag, so she would at least be somewhat prepared for what might happen. “Though, if we get smote, it will totally be your fault for letting me do this.” She informed him, as if making sure that what might happen would be no fault of her own. “Oh come on, I’m sure it won’t be all that bad! Besides, I think the Tapu likes you so it won’t do that!” He said, patting her so hard on the back that she stumbled for a second. “Geez, those lessons with your gramps sure have been paying off huh?” She said, not expecting him to hit that hard.

The two of them then set off for the Ruins of Conflict, not knowing what exactly would be there for them, though it would probably not be fun in the way Hau meant it. Of course, like good friends, they began to converse between the two of them, and eventually, the topic of conversation made it’s way to Lillie. “Hey, Hau, did you… have a crush on Lillie? Before she left I mean.” Vriskaya asked timidly, as if she was unsure if she could ask about that, Lillie did just leave a few months ago after all, the hole from her leaving was still fresh, for both of them. “I-I, dunno, I mean, she was our friend. But, aw, I dunno! Emotions are confusing!” He stammered a bit while blushing, due to the unexpected question. which was understandable, as emotions aren’t really bound to anything logical. Then, Hau said, “What about you Vriskaya? Did you have a crush on her?” And then it was Vriskaya’s turn to blush, and it was much more noticeable, as even with how long she’s lived here, she still doesn’t have that much of a tan. “L-like you said, she was our close friend, and well, emotions are very confusing! M-maybe, if I had known her for longer though…” She admitted, not entirely sure how to deal with stuff like romance. “However, there’s one thing I think we can both agree on! She was, and is, totally awesome!” She said cheerfully. Hau nodded in agreement, “Yeah, she is really cool! I bet she’s enjoying Kanto right now!” Vriskaya then nodded, “Of course! Kanto is really cool! Oh man, I wonder if she has been to Celadon yet, the department store has some really cool items, like some pokedolls and stuff!” She said, remembering when her mom took her there a few times when she was younger.

Then, after not too much longer, they finally made it to the Ruins of Conflict. “Well, we’re here Vriskaya! Now go in and ask Tapu Koko about the dreams!” Said Hau, as he gave her a reassuring pat on the back, though with less force than he had earlier. “W-wait, aren’t you going to come in with me? This was YOUR idea!” She exclaimed, fully expecting Hau to come in with her since he brought up the idea of going here originally. “Well, yeah it was, but, it’s because of your dreams that we came here, not to mention, you are the champion after all, the Tapu will probably listen to you more because of that. Also you saw it once before so you might have some sort of connection to the Tapu, it is the one who gave you the stone for your Z-ring after all!” He explained. “I…guess you’re right. Though, if I don’t make it back alive, find my ashes and have them sprinkled on top of my favorite outfit, it’s the one that’s hanging on the doorknob to my closet.” She said, preparing for the worst case scenario. Which, when going to meet a fickle legendary could very well mean death.

Vriskaya then took a deep breath, and entered the ruins, with one of her hands wrapped around a pokeball, just in case it challenges her to a fight, which is very likely given this particular Tapu’s temperament. When she made it to the altar she kneeled in front of the altar, and said. “Tapu Koko, I, Vriskaya of Melemele Island, the current Alolan League champion, have come bearing a question for you, as it is something that has left me curious. I have been having dreams ever since I first met you months ago, and these dreams, they almost feel too real to be dreams, they are more like…memories. So I come to you to ask, what are these? Are they simply dreams or are they something more?” She then looked up and for a few seconds nothing appeared. Then, suddenly, like a bolt of lighting striking a tall tree in a forest, Tapu Koko appeared!

Then, the Tapu started to speak. But not like actual speech, instead it spoke directly into her mind via telepathy, “Rise Vriskaya of Melemele Island, Current champion of Alola. For the answers that you seek, you must show your worth to me. For you have already shown your worth to those of Alola by protecting them from the one who was corrupted by one who was outside of this world, and by becoming a champion to look up to. Now come!” As Vriskaya rose, she threw out a pokeball that was containing her mudsdale. “Go, mudsdale! Use High Horsepower! to get up to it and then use Heavy Slam to bring it down!” She said, as that was a start of a truly tremendous battle between Alolan spirit and Tapu.

After the battle, Tapu Koko bowed, “You have truly shown your worth to me, not only as what one would call a ‘trainer’, but also as a champion of the Alolan people. Now, for the answer you seek, those ‘dreams’ as you called them are not dreams but instead memories. Memories of a past life, memories of a place that no longer exists.” it told her. “Wha? But, I mean, how?! I am just me! I was born Vriskaya 11 years ago to my mom and my dad, and I lived in Kanto until my mom made me move to here because Dad died and she couldn’t keep up the rent!” She said, freaking out and unsure of what exactly this whole thing was about. Past lives? Places that don’t exist? What the hell does that even mean?! The Tapu nodded slightly, “I can see you are distressed, maybe this will help. now kneel so you can receive the gift of the Tapu.” after it said that, she kneeled and then it floated towards her and placed something akin to a hand on top of her head.

When it did that, everything became known to her. Her name was Vriskaya Serkyam, she was a…troll? And also had a chainsaw that ran on dice? And, she had two friends, one male friend who she cared for a lot, and made sure he didn’t die, no matter what. And one female friend who she probably had feelings for. Their names were Solska and Davenaya. She could also use something called…magic? There was also something about anger, and frustration as well. The three of them were fighting…something, when suddenly an explosion occurred. It was so large and so…different, it felt like every atom in that specific place had collapsed and then… nothing.

By the time that was over, Vriskaya shakily rose up, somehow seeming just a bit more mature than what she was originally. “T-thank you, Tapu Koko. But, if I may, why was I brought back? That enemy, it destroyed me and my… friends” She asked, curious as to why she had been brought back, after all, she was originally from a destroyed universe, one that didn’t even have any sort of pokemon! “There were some who thought you still had potential left in you, so it was because of them, that you were brought into this world. However, they could only save your soul and not your body, that is why you are like this. They also believed that you would be too distraught if you were aware of all that had happened, that is why your memories were specifically with me. When I saw you when you were saving the cosmog, I felt it was only right to give back some of what once were yours.” It explained.

“Again, thank you for this. I sincerely appreciate it Tapu Koko.” She said, doing a small bow then starting to leave.”Wait! Before you leave, take this.” Tapu Koko said, giving Vriskaya the Tapunium Z. She held it for a little bit before putting it with her other Z-crystals. “You may use it to call upon the power of the Tapu anytime.” it said. “Thank you, I promise I will only use it if I need to.” Vriskaya said, before finally leaving the Ruins of Conflict.

She then smiled when she saw Hau at the entrance. Thank goodness he was still there. “So…How did it go? Was I right? Were you right?” He asked, bombarding her with questions, since he was definitely worried about her, especially given how serious she was before entering. “Geez, I am fine Hau! And also, I will tell you later okay, since it’s getting pretty late yknow? I’m pretty sure that Hala will notice if you’re not there for your training tomorrow because you slept in from staying up to late!” She said, with a bit of levity in her voice that wasn’t there before.

“Oh man, you’re right! We’d better run so I can make it home on time! But, you gotta tell me eventually okay?” He said, getting a little bit antsy at the mention of Hala’s training. “Now c’mon let’s go!” He said, pulling on her arm, as if to make her go. “Alright, I’m coming, I’m coming.” Vriskaya said, at Hau’s insistence. Once the two made it back to Iki Town, they bid each other goodbye and then went their separate ways.

Once Vriskaya made it home, she went into her room and started making some sketches for what looked to be three different outfits, each with a slightly different look to them. One being more ninjaesque, while still being a bit formfitting, with a few gear patterns around the front. An outfitthat looked similar to some of the dresses that she had sketched up before, but it was now seemingly mixed with a tuxedo jacket giving it a nice cinched look to it, and it also had some spiral patterns on the arms, and the front pocket of the jacket. And finally, an outfit that at first glance doesn’t look like much, but still has a few flourishes here and there, mainly around the arms and the chest. And they had the titles of “Davenaya”, “Vriskaya Serkyam”, and “Solska”. She then pinned it to a corkboard that had multiple other designs, mainly of poofy dresses, on it. Also, on top of the titled designs, she put down stick notes that say “Do ASAP” on them. For she did not want to forget her friends. Not then, not now, and not ever.

I’m afraid I can’t think of any good rec lists - actually, any rec lists at all, come to think of it. So I guess that means I have to make my own! See you under the cut.

Okay, so quite a lot of Sapphire & Steelfics have spoilers/references to that fateful final assignment. Which I am 99%sure you have not experienced yet. Also, there tends to be quite a lot ofSilver, and I'm not entirely sure if you know him yet. With that in mind, here are a whole bunch ofnon-spoilery fics in a variety of genres and places.

Cul-de-Sac (No hawkers, traders, cold callers, canvassers or purveyors ofreligious knowledge) by thisbluespirit - Sapphire and Steel are two perfectlynormal folk living on a perfectly normal street living a perfectly normaldomestic life. Probably. Maybe. Objectively hilarious.

Anything by Allerleirauh, because they write some frankly gorgeous stuff, oftendelightfully Sapphire-centric. It's worth mentioning that, even though everybit of it is fantastic, their works often contain some disturbing/triggeringthemes, so it's best to pay attention to the tags and back out immediately ifyou're not comfortable. I particularly like Two Queens and A Game ofTime.

Assigned (100 Element prompts) by bluespirit - a collection of 38 short storiesfeaturing various Elements, both canon and fanmade. All of them are really, reallynice and there's a huge variety of tones and characters. I ended upconsuming a few a day the first time I stumbled across this, reading them withmy afternoon tea. An excellent experience, would recommend.

The Glade by Wiccagirl24 - Doctor Who crossover. Seven and Ace end up in themiddle of Sapphire and Steel's latest assignment - some really greatcharacterization here.

Lost Lives by Mab - a delightfully creepy little adventure with a lovelyending.

Time Has Told Me by Tish - brilliant. Just - brilliant in many ways.Sapphire and Steel get humanized, and everybody is panicking trying to findthem, even as they're panicking trying to find each other. Some really greatOCs, and a wonderful story that just sweeps you away.

One Night Stand by thebluespirit - Silver and a whole bunch of Elements,chilling together year after year on a particularly lengthy assignment. Agorgeous character study. I'm very fond of every single bit of it.

Scientific Spirit (or Five Times Liz Shaw metSilver) by thisbluespirit - Doctor Who crossover. There is an oddpopular crossover pairing in this fandom - Liz Shaw and Silver. I know you'renot too fond of romance (I think? I seem to recall. Or maybe that's just me),but honestly when I read this fic I hardly noticed it, or maybe just didn'tcare. It's just really well done in a lot of ways. Liz and Silver arepitch-perfect. And also if you enjoyed that, Heart of the Trouble by the same author is just as good and a bit less heartwrenching.

Striking A Balance by thebluespirit - Sapphire and Steel go curtain shopping,and argue a lot, and also it's perfectly in character. If you've noticedI'm reccing a lot of things by thebluespirit, that's because they're amazingand they write The Best S&S Fic In Existence. I'm actually holding myselfback from just copy-pasting their entire profile list of fic into here, becauseI want to highlight some other authors too.

Borrowed Time by weakinteraction - a really cool assignmentfic with Sapphirecoming across something.

The Cat, the Mouse and the Wardrobe by (you guessed it) thebluespirit - Sapphire,Silver and Lead, as animals, trying to get work done. It's Very Good.

The Fall of Darkness by Eliann_SleepingCat - a fairly old (and fairly long) followup/sort of fixit ficfor Assignment 2. Really interesting concepts.

Now You See It by thia - Sapphire and Steel at a magic show. That's it. And whata show.

Decade of Hell by fog_shadow - crossover with Star Trek: Voyager. I'm notfamiliar with ST:V, but that didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying thisSilver-centric assignment fic. I'm fond of Silver, can you tell? It's a reallynice character study.

Notes From The Past - a kind of nonsensical assignment thing that was just anexcuse to show off my OC, Magnesium.

The Visitors - crossover with Welcome To Night Vale. Sapphire and Steel stop byin a very strange desert town, impress the radio host that narrates everyone'slives, and accidentally cause approximately one (1) innocent death. Justabsurdity. There is one line in this that still makes me grin every time I remember i wrote it.

Assigned - crossover with OFF (the video game). Sapphire encounters a strangesort of Judge. short.

hello, my candy coated darling - crossover with Homestuck, although it's morelike just a few concepts have been stolen from the canon. No characters from itshow up. Sapphire looks a lot more colorful than usual. This may turn out to bea problem.

light your way, but that is all - Sapphire, Steel, Silver, and Lead on an assignment, with a mysterious narrator. This is my favorite S&S fic I've ever written.

The Problem With Cringe Culture

From what I’ve seen, the phenomenon dubbed Cringe Culture is a paragon of insecurity, internalized misogyny, and self-loathing.

Let me elaborate a little here: here on Tumblr (and in life in general, honestly), a lot of folks are very pre-occupied with what is or isn’t Cringey. It’s a dynamic somewhat reminiscent of an eighth grade schoolyard, but that’s really not the issue here.

What Tumblr folks dub Cringey are typically things that are enjoyed by young teens (in particular, young girls) exploring fandom and fan creativity for the first time.

Yes, these teens are frequently obnoxious, overzealous, and loud, but it’s an exciting time for kids: we as adults may have comfortably settled into our interests, but for them it’s an avenue of unsupervised self-expression they may not have experienced before. Moreover, they have little to no experience in moderating themselves, which is one of the reasons why I believe the act of mocking them to be a somewhat callous one.

Are they occasionally annoying? Subjectively, yes. I frequently find young teens and tweens annoying, particularly when they’re being loud and obnoxious during my allotted writing time. But I don’t shame them for it, on here or in real life, because I’m an adult and they are literally children .

And most importantly, so are the people mocking them.

I’ll elaborate once again: I’m nineteen. Most of my friends, both on here and on my other blog, are fellow chill late teens and twenty-somethings. And I’ve never seen any adult who’s secure in their own self-image do anything other than Do Their Own Thing and allow everyone else do the same.

In other words, I’ve been involved in fandom for a few years now, and almost everyone I’ve seen actively participating in cringe culture has turned out to be no older than seventeen or so themselves, and probably (consciously or otherwise) attempting to distance themselves from their “embarrassing” younger alter egos and feel more confident in their purported maturity.

Because they probably did some Cringey things when they were fourteen, too: maybe they drew manga OCs on DeviantArt with needlessly elaborate hair, ran a passionate SuperWhoLock blog, read Homestuck, wrote angsty poetry about turning into wolves, et cetera.

Of course, the whole point here is that there is literally nothing wrong with any of these things: they’re harmless examples of children exploring revenues of creativity for the first time, that we’ve been conditioned to find embarrassing.

Now, I’m not going to pretend I didn’t have this phase myself: I once got into an impassioned argument on Facebook with a bunch of One Direction fans when I was sixteen or so, in which I dismissed their obsession as being Stupid and Juvenile and proclaimed my favored Heavy Metal as being far superior.

Now, I’m still not into One Direction in the slightest, but if I could go back in time I would probably smack my sixteen-year-old self upside the head and tell her to leave people alone and let them do their own thing.

Of course, a large part of my reasoning was also driven at the time by my unfortunate Not Like Other Girls phase, in which I wanted to distance myself from the silliness of my fellow teen girls as much as possible. I may or may not have still been in my “I hate pink” phase, which I still shudder to think about to this day.

Which brings me to another one of Cringe Culture’s more problematic aspects: it’s inherently a little misogynist, in that almost everyone who partakes in it is attempting to distance themselves from the interests of teenage girls.

Shows like Doctor Who, Steven Universe, Voltron, Supernatural, Yuri on Ice, and many others all have passionate and predominantly young female fanbases, and as such, people seem unwittingly inclined to see them as inherently vapid, annoying, or Cringey in a way that equally vocal male-dominated fandoms simply aren’t.

Even being a Trekkie (Star Trek fan) was considered embarrassing when the fandom was predominantly female populated, although the means by which fanfiction and discourse was exchanged was via fan-run zines rather than Tumblr blogs. Now that men are in on it, it’s considered one of the best fandoms there is.

More male populated fandoms such as Game of Thrones, the Walking Dead, the DC and Marvel cinematic universes, and Star Wars are just as impassioned, and have had just as many ideological issues in the past. Yet are these things ever denigrated as being Cringy or annoying? Not that I can recall.

Another one of my greatest issues with Cringe Culture is that it discourages passion: I have never encountered a fandom, Cringey or otherwise, that hasn’t produced genuinely stunning works of art and fiction. Moreover, I’ve never encountered a fandom that doesn’t have fans who have cited it as what saved them from depression or even suicide.

So if someone’s passionate about something, even if it’s something of no value to you, it costs absolutely zero dollars to mind your own goddamn business and not taint their joy with your own insecurity, cynicism, and internalized self-loathing.

Similarly, I can speak from experience when I say my interests and fandoms got me through the very worst period of my adolescence, and I’d be a significantly less happy person if I didn’t have still have them to fall back on. Not everyone’s sole source of enjoyment and comfort in life comes from nihilistic memes.

So if you want to take a step towards fostering a more creative generation, take a step away from Cringe Culture. Respect other people’s interests, and openly and unabashedly enjoy your own. Question why you think certain interests are Cringey, and try to distance yourself from the mentality that you’re a better or cooler person for being less similar to young women.

And finally, try and forgive your fourteen-year-old self for whatever cringiness they may have been culpable of, and tell them that you love them anyway.
