I am yet again requesting headcanons for the 141 (or whoever you want <3) with a reader who has an angry resting face. And to add onto that, they are very expressive with their love but it comes off as aggressive (not on purpose) because they always look, you know, mad. Like when reader says "I love you," it sounds like a threat and really, they look like they wanna kill them, but they don’t.

whew, i'm so sorry for the wait on this! i took a small break from tumblr so i could focus on finishing some assignments i had for my classes, but they're all completed and turned in so i should be good for now! also i wasn't 100% sure if you wanted this to be platonic or romantic, so i tried to write it to where it could be interpreted as both. thank you for requesting and, as always, i hope you enjoy :)

warnings: none other than the fact that i don't know how to stop myself from typing more than i need to

summary: the 141 learns to adjust to life with their newest recruit; you.

when price first introduces you to the group, he can't help but feel like he's done something wrong

and honestly no one can really blame him for feeling that way

the expression that paints your face when you make eye contact with him practically screams, "sleep with one eye open"

and while it is mildly terrifying, he only sees it as a challenge

because in his mind, if he can get the mighty ghost to warm up to him, he can get anyone to warm up to him

so as soon as price cuts you loose from the brief introductions, he's already right by your side pestering you with various questions

and while it was a bit off-putting, you weren't really surprised because price had already told you all about soap before he decided he wanted you on his team

so you just kinda stood there and let him fire off his questions while answering them with that angry expression and bored monotone voice that he can't help but love

like you're standing there, arms crossed with perhaps one of the most pissed off expressions he's ever seen in his life but all his mind can think is >:(

needless to say, he doesn't take your prickly exterior too seriously and it's because of this he's able to get closer to you a lot quicker than the other members do

and it's because of this he tends to vouch for you a lot more to the other members when it comes to getting to know you

"they're not that bad, i swear!"

"johnny, they look like they wanna rip your arm off every time you're near them."

"but they don't, that's the funny part!"

best believe this man is fighting for his life whenever your rbf gets brought into the conversation

and i imagine that one day you actually manage to overhear one of these little debates/conversations (tbh they could go either way with how divided they can be over it, especially when it's gaz vs soap)

and you can't just ignore the way your heart warms as you hear soap valiantly defend your honor

it's one of the few times you're genuinely thankful for his big mouth

after listening in to the conversation for a few more minutes you eventually decide to walk away, heart full and the smallest of smiles pulling at the edge of your lips

i think it goes without saying that you go a little sweet on him after that encounter

well

as sweet as you can go when you're the human embodiment of >:(

at least in the opinion of soap

you don't really see the resemblance tbh

anyway

you start doing little things for him

things like offering to take watch for him when you're both on a mission because you noticed that he hadn't really bothered getting any rest

sitting by his side and letting him ramble on about his family, especially how he always begged his parents to let him stay with his nan over the summer because she owned a little family farm that he absolutely loved to run around on

and even the time you learned how to make scotch pie using his mom's recipe he had tucked away in his room

no matter how much he may deny it, that last one had him tearing up as soon as he took a bite

but honestly, can you blame him?

the man barely gets to visit his parents back home because of his work and it crushes him

honestly, it was probably one of the first few things he confided in you when you first started talking

so naturally when price announces that the 141 has been approved for a two week leave, you don't hesitate in logging onto the computer and buying him the first tickets back to scotland

what you do hesitate with is actually giving them to him

so you decide to gloss over that part completely and instead opt for shoving the tickets inside an plain envelope with his name scribbled on the front and a small note that simply reads, "go." before sliding it under his door the night before everyone is scheduled to depart from base

the moment soap gets his hands on those tickets he can't help the way he runs through the halls and bursts into your room to give you the biggest hug you've ever had in your life

unfortunately for you both, you'd already left base by the time he discovered the tickets

and so with a heavy heart, soap makes his way back to his room before packing his bags with a new vigor

the plane leaves in six hours, but he's so excited he can't help but want to arrive early

needless to say those are probably the best two weeks of his life

and while the others are interested in hearing all about his trip, he simply brushes them off in favor watching the door so he can be there for the exact moment you walk in

and after making him wait more than what he felt was necessary, you finally walk in

and this man

the way he shoots up from his seat and runs over to hug you

it's almost enough to send you both flying to the ground

but luckily you've got some stellar balance and manage to save yourselves from being teased by the rest of the team

but with the way soap is squeezing onto you while repeatedly whispering, "thank you," into the nape of your neck, you don't doubt they'll make fun of you for that

even with the mild embarrassment you feel, you simply wrap your arms around the scottish man and offer him a few pats on the back

and as sweet as it is for the other men to witness such a tender scene, they can't help but notice how upset you look

it's almost laughable

and as much as they want to step in and tell soap to back off, they can't help but notice the way you cling onto soap with that soft look in your eyes

so they remain quiet as you and soap hang onto each other, hearts full of warmth

i'm gonna say it now

out of anyone in the 141, he was probably the one most intimidated by you

he's the youngest out of everyone and so it stands that, naturally, he has less experience than others

it's for this reason i think he's so keen on staying close to price

i mean the man practically plucked him off the streets and said, "you're mine now," so i think it's reasonable that gaz grows a tad more attached to price than the other members

so when he catches a few glimpses of you around base barking orders at the recruits and slamming them into the mats during sparring sessions, he's not exactly dying to meet you

even so, he finds he's not too worried about the possibility

with how often the 141 departs base to go on various missions and how you always seem to be too caught up in whatever you're doing at the time to be bothered to even glance his way, he eventually comes to the conclusion that you'll never meet

until one day price strolls into the common area where he and the rest of the team are minding their own business with you trailing right beside him looking aggravated as ever

he's already a bit uneasy with the fact you now know where the team goes to relax, but that unease slowly shifts to downright horror when price reveals that you're the newest member of the team

now gaz is usually a pretty easygoing and friendly guy so any chance to meet and bond with new people is always bound to be a good time in his book

but he can't help the shiver that crawls up his spine whenever you're around

seriously, who or what made you look so pissed off all the time?

anyway

because he's so hesitant of being around you, he tries his hardest not to bother you

which basically means he tries not to be in the same room as you

and while you may not really notice or care, the rest of the team certainly does

especially price

he's the type of man who prides himself on having a team that knows they can all rely on one another on and off the field and so he'll be damned if you and gaz are the ones to ruin his little streak

so guess who gets assigned to accompany you and the recruits on your morning workouts from now on?

gaz!

and while he's not necessarily thrilled about the idea of being forced into such close proximity to you, especially first thing in the morning, he respects price enough to not question his decision and just ends up going along with it

and at first he doesn't really pay you much attention in an effort to not do anything to accidentally make you even more upset than he already assumes you are

but then he starts to notice something

he notices the way the recruits light up whenever they see you, whether it be during the morning workout sessions or when you're walking around base

and it baffles him because you just look so upset, he can't possibly imagine why they're all so keen on sending you wide smiles or enthusiastic waves

but one day he looks just a little bit closer and he can see the faintest hint of amusement on your face as your lips showcase the ghost of a smile

that's when he really starts to pay attention

and suddenly he can't help but feel a little ashamed of himself

because now he can practically feel his heart melt every time you interact with the recruits

like how you would bring extra ice-cold water bottles to the morning workouts for the recruits who'd forget to bring their own

or the way you wouldn't hesitate to slide them some money if they mentioned being hungry while you were around

and especially how you don't hesitate to lend an ear for them if they seemed to be troubled by something

it's in those few little moments that he can see just the tiniest cracks through your annoyed expression and heated glares

you're not angry at all, he decides, just real shit at expressing yourself

and upon deciding this, he realizes you're not so scary anymore

so now instead of avoiding you like the plague, he actively seeks you out

at first it's to help you out with carrying the extra water bottles for the recruits in the morning and planning the workouts for the week

but then it turns into him asking to sit with you at the mess hall over dinner and keeping each other company in the commons area

and as much as he tries not to, he can't help the giddiness that floods his body when you start to show him that aggressive love he sees you dish out to the recruits

shoving snacks into his hands when you notice he hasn't eaten in a while

quietly sitting with him while he goes through paperwork because you both know he has a tendency to get distracted

and his personal favorite, draping your jacket over him when you walk in on him sleeping anywhere that isn't his room

he always wakes up with a smile tugging on his lips

and despite how cold and distant you may look while doing these things, he doesn't give it much attention anymore

not when he can see the love and care that's reflected in your eyes

despite you and ghost having similar exteriors, it becomes more and more apparent to gaz and soap that you're actually quite different

which isn't a bad thing, of course! just a bit unexpected

but it's because of this striking difference that you and simon tend to keep a majority of your interactions on the field

and you both are more than happy to keep it this way

gaz and soap however, are not

so naturally they put together a plan; a plan that consists of soap giving you his most treasured tactical pen so you can use it to write away in that little journal of yours on the ride back from missions just so he can later "confront" ghost and admonish him for stealing said pen

and during all this, gaz simply remains on the sidelines just looking pretty

anyway

after laying into simon for a good ten minutes, soap walks away from the encounter with a small smile before walking up to gaz and saying something like, "now we wait"

and they do wait

patiently

but after a full two weeks pass by and neither gaz or soap can find any evidence of their so called "master plan" working, they can't help but feel a little discouraged

unbeknownst to them, it totally worked

just not in the way they envisioned

you see, by the time soap came up to simon to lecture him about stealing his pen, ghost had already come to notice you scribbling into your notebook with it

so once soap had finally decided to leave him alone, he immediately confronted you about framing him for such a crime

but you just kinda stare up at him with that annoyed look of yours before revealing soap had willingly given it to you

and things just kinda click into place for the two of you; soap wanted to get you talking

and while you and simon had to admit it wasn't a bad plan, you didn't want to give the scotsman the satisfaction of knowing it had actually worked

so whenever you and simon find yourselves in the company of the rest of the team, you decide to remain distant

but when it's just the two of you?

you're straight chilling

especially when you visit him in his room or vice versa

like just imagine the two of you drinking tea that simon was nice enough to make and watching war movies while bashing all the inaccuracies and bad calls the characters make

or when the two of you are out and about on base free from the prying eyes of gaz and soap because they're out doing their own thing

you and simon love finding random groups of rowdy soldiers just to intimidate them

i don't know about you, but i can definitely see simon just standing there with his arms crossed and eyes narrowed while you rest your hands on your hips with your lips pulled into a frown

price definitely gets complaints about the two of you

he does nothing about them

and for a while that's pretty much the gist of how you and simon spend your time together

but i like to imagine that after a particularly rough mission, simon would seek you out just to sit with you

and i can see him as a stress smoker so when he finally does manage to find you and take a seat beside you, you slide him a pack of cigarettes and a lighter

he doesn't ask how you know his cigarette preference, but instead gives you a small nod of approval before pulling up his mask over lips and taking a drag

and that's how you spend your night

just sitting beside each other as you watch the evening sky gradually begin to fill with stars

i think it would depend on how bad the mission went in order to determine exactly how long the two of you stay sitting under the stars, but it doesn't matter because it'll end the same way; you reaching over and giving simon's hand a quick squeeze with a small, "get some sleep, simon. you need it," before you walk away

and he finds himself confused to two reasons

reason one: why did you grab his hand why did he like it?

reason two: how can you say such sweet words but still look so mad?

as much as he wants to play that moment over in his head just to make sure he was remembering things right, he decides against it in favor of heeding your words and getting some sleep

but it's after that moment he can't help but notice how your mannerisms have changed

not only are your words of reassurance more apparent than before, he's also noticed you have a tendency to give his hand/shoulder a reassuring squeeze every now and then

he can't help the small smile that threatens to pull at his lips when you do

but he also can't help but notice how distant and reserved your face looks when you do all of these things

he doesn't really mind it though

but he eventually does bring it up to you one day

it's probably after he tells you one of his god awful dad jokes

like he'll look over at you and notice your sour expression and say something like, "don't look so pissed, they're not that bad."

and you'll respond with a tilt of your head as you tell him, "i'm not pissed. i like your jokes."

then he'll nudge your shoulder before telling you, "with that face? coulda fooled me."

and you'll roll your eyes in faux annoyance as you brush him off with a simple, "that's just my face."

and then he'll look down at you, thankful for his mask so you can't see the small smile making its way onto his face

he might even say something dumb and cheesy like, "i know. i like it."

and you give him one of your rare smiles

and i could end it there and say the two of you are bffs

or i could sprinkle in something about soap running up on the two of you chanting, "my plan worked, my plan worked!"

that's for you to decide

I have nothing polite to say about this blatant attempt to pin blame on Destiel shippers for acknowledging queer coding in the canon, for saying the ship is canon. Nothing polite. At all whatsoever. This is a blatantly manipulative silencing attempt, blame-shifting, self-serving false equalizations. (From a "nice" Jared stan on twitter who frequently says really stupid things while posing behind a veneer of TFW/J2M positivity and civility).

This...honestly this is outrageous. To say that the cause of fandom conflict is shippers who support the canon text for Destiel AND NOT THE ANTIS WHO KEEP BEING HATEFUL.

Utterly surreal.

I do think it's willful. I think these stans know better and choose to be assholes due to their insecurities and their need to be controlling, maybe they do have some issue where they lack basic empathy, comprehension, media literacy, understanding, but at this point I feel like that's being too generous. It's purposeful. It's manipulative.

Just putting this out there to beware of this kind of fake reasonable take.

This is a shot at Destiel shippers, they aren't reprimanding w*ncestis and their warped canon takes.

We're ruining things by not "just having fun" because GOOD SHIPPERS are quiet and demure and simper about how their queer ship could never ever really be canon, and that's the only Right and Correct Way to Ship.

Not sure how to word this adequately so I’ll just go for it. It feels like music is important to the reader as they are a musician. When I was younger my bio family made me play piano as it was classy instead of drums which they dubbed “too punk”. Of course now that I’m older and more free I turned back to drums and am a full metalhead. I like to imagine that once the batfam visits the reader they’ll be a little more free to do as they like, so I keep telling myself the reader won’t look the same at all, full on metalhead or punk. Like all those music posters when the reader was young was probably less thrash and more school appropriate. But now they’d just sitting there with corpse paint. Or something else that’s equally flashy. I like to think the family is just in utter shock, the difference between the more neat and classy child vs the reader now, with flashy hairstyles/ clothes and makeup. Maybe the reader is still writing songs but it’s all metal and their friends are not in a band with them. This is just a self indulgent headcanon because my closest friends introduced me to metal (once I immigrated to this country) and it felt weirdly liberating. Now whenever I visit my family in my home country they’re always in shock at how much I’ve changed. I like to think it’ll be the same with the Batfamily.

I honestly really like this interpretation! And love it a lot!

Whereas I can't say that the reader will turn full metal as I'd like to leave which style and such they're going for now up in the air, and leave that for you and others to decide, I can say that they will look different, as you've mentioned!

I won't press on it too hard in Part 3 but it is still noticeable, I'd say, and I will likely mention it but again- won't press to hard on it only because of what Part 3 really focuses on. Or! Maybe I will a little bit because of what part 3 is really talking about, or trying to further convey.

Regardless, I am very happy for you! The headcanon is very lovely <3

Oh! Right! I will also say that music does really play a huge part to the reader, and it is very important to them. Like others — fellow artists or not — it has gotten them through tough times, and while they did feel obligated to pick up certain instruments, others were purely for their own enjoyment. They find freedom in playing, but it also leads them to a new world - maybe even a better one that they're slowly pulled out of as the song comes to and end.

Again, I'm going to leave the style and specific genre up to interpretation, and honestly from now on might try to be more vague with the instruments the reader plays at certain instances, so that it can be easier for you and others to picture the reader playing whatever you think would fit the scenario.

Though as you've also said, I can say that the Batfam will be in shock, but I suppose that's already expected since, in the narrative, they no little about the reader as a whole, y'know? So just about anything will surprise them, but that's not necessarily a bad thing from the reader's side. Just a further wake up call, I suppose :]

I'd like to ask some questions from the Character Ask Game! ✨

Specifically numbers 1, 2, and 12 for Beetlejuice!

I hope these answers aren't too in depth, but I have ✨ thoughts ✨! I'm gonna try to keep this Musicaljuice specific because he's my favorite. 1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

There are a bajillion factors at play as to why I adore this weird little goober man. I always really end up loving the monster/supernatural entity/villain in most media I consume, so Beetlejuice perfectly fits that niche in my brain (occult brain go brrr). Like, yes, I love the demon by default. Of all of his iterations, Musical!Beetlejuice is my favorite. He's kind of a shithead, but he's entertaining. I want to see him succeed as much as I want to see him fail if that makes sense (also depends on if I'm watching the movie vs the cartoon vs the musical). Full disclosure, I never watched Beetlejuice 1988 until October of last year. The only reason I did was because I thought I should watch it/get context before watching the Brightman bootleg of the mucial I found. And uhhhhhhh I didn't really like it, which is weird for me (but I do enjoy it more now). All that's to say that the musical version of the character was more sympathetic and more fleshed out in a way that makes me both feel so so bad for him (mommy issues solidarity) while also wanting to punt him across a room (that might also be the cute-aggression though). My pathetic little meow meow. He does also give me the tiniest bit of Genie vibes? Love me the magical comic relief trope. Stellar. 10/10. No notes. Did I mention that he makes me laugh? It's the immature humor for me. It's the kind of low-brow goofiness that I grew up with (thanks, dad, ow I'm immature). This applies to all iterations, but mostly Musicaljuice and Toonjuice (the puns! I live and breathe puns!)

2. Favorite canon thing about this character? Mood ring hair. Even though he's not human, Beetlejuice just feels feelings so intensly as a demon that his emotions can literally change a part of his physical appearance. Whoever thought of this is a genius. I love this trope across media because there's something that's really appealing to me about a character giving in to their emotions in that way. Like, as much as Beetlejuice is a manipulative jerk, he can't really hide how he's feeling and that's a fun juxtaposition that has a lot of potential (forever crying that the mood ring hair is not utilized in the tour version). That, and I do love what people have done with this concept in fanfics/fan art.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

I have so many! But one that doesn't leave my brain is that Beej is a big fan of swing music (and by extension swing dancing). I was going to make a mega post about this (and maybe I will eventually), but there are a few instances in the musical that contribute to this. Honestly though, it's really the energy and melodies associated with the genre that I naturally associate with Beetlejuice. As much as Beej has a rock-inspired motif going on with a lot of his songs in the musical, I like to think that a demon that old would have a hard time moving on from a genre like jazz and thus swing.

Post-Game Thoughts

I was thinking about my Tav and Astarion post-game because while my hyperfixation is waning, they still consume a lot of my brain. While I've done some headcanons before, this was more about the physical part of their relationship.

In short, I think after so long of being forced to have sex with people for 200 years Astarion isn't going to have a particularly high libido. Not that he goes celibate, but the frequency of indulging in sex goes way down. I'll expand on my thoughts under the cut:

Fair warning, it's a bit of a ramble.

Post-game, at least at first, I could see Astarion wanting to throw himself back into having sex - especially wild, debaucherous sex - once he feels he has true ownership of his body again as a way to reclaim that part of him and to rediscover what he enjoys. It also factors in his mind that that Tav has a healthy libido and wants her to be satisfied. Unfortunately, it does not go at all how he assumed it would.

Astarion is still working through lots of trauma, and 200 years of habit to hide what he actually feels during sex can't be an easy thing to break - no matter how often Tav reassures him he can always tell her 'no' and suggests that they move slowly. His plans of throwing himself back into fray, so to speak, come to a screeching half early on after several nights involving dissociation and panic attacks. After which Astarion agrees that starting slow and simple would be best.

Tav does learn his tells when he starts getting into a bad headspace and will stop every time to check in with him, making sure he's okay and see if he wants to stop. The two of them probably end up in the habit of checking in often during sex regardless which I think would help with any anxiety Astarion might have.

Even with check-ins, incidents most certainly happen where Astarion gets triggered by something and just looses all desire. Again, early on he would push it down and keep going until Tav realizes that's what he's doing. Once he's at a point where he is no longer hiding those moments, but not where he's particularly good at communication, I kind of see him just ditching in the middle of whatever they're doing and stepping away to Tav's absolute confusion (Fully have been picturing a scene where he stands up, literally just dumps her on the bed, and steps away without a word).

Mind, Tav really is perfectly fine being turned down or stopping because a mood changed, but she absolutely does gets frustrated when there's a lack of communication.

I do think at some point, maybe a year or so into post-game relationship and after realizing a lot of people are assuming they go at it like rabbits, he's going to give a lot of thought about what a "normal" amount is and make himself anxious over it. By that time I feel like the two of them would only be having sex ranging from maybe once a tenday, to full months where nothing happens other than cuddling. There's probably even some nights/days where he can't even stand to be cuddled up to in full honesty. Regardless, he starts to wonder and worry about it which I imagine would trigger old feelings about having to have sex vs wanting it.

As an aside, but important context: This Tav (Tav Moonridge) is a tiefling. I headcanon that some tieflings can have a heat/rut triggered once they get into a physical relationship - especially if there is biting involved. Tav is part of the population that does experience this and she does let Astarion feed from her regularly. Her going through heat is something they absolutely have to learn to navigate.

I digress, him questioning the amount of sex would end up in a whole argument because even post-game Astarion doesn't articulate his feelings amazingly under normal conditions, and less so when he's stressed about something. Tav would have to really impress upon him that she's not comparing their sex life to other people's sex life - or to other people's opinions - but I think once the argument is over and they cool off him feeling more comfortable about everything.

Sometime during all of this he's going to figure out that Tav's "rule" about only taking one lover at a time is more of a flexible guideline and she really only sticks to it early in a relationship. I feel that learning that Tav is fine with sharing/being shared on occasion, but isn't particularly interested in it being a common thing or even expanding their relationship to include a third person, takes some weight off Astarion's mind about her actually being okay being with him - even when his desire is low. It helps him solidify that she wants him, and not just between sheets.

It also helps some with his anxieties when Tav's heats trigger. Which is not a true heat - she's not she's climbing the walls and yowling to get railed by anyone. Tav can function perfectly normal and has even turned down Astarion during a heat because she was more interested in cuddles and sleep than her raging libido. On the other hand though: Tav can be a little insatiable once she gets going. The heats normally line up well enough with high points in his own desire that those nights are often just between them. But, now and then, they do decide to add in someone else for a night or two and let Astarion tap in and out as he likes.

I feel eventually they hit a 'golden age' in their relationship where they are entirely, completely comfortable with each other. That isn't to say they don't still have their spats or that there aren't times where one or the other is triggered (Tav also has some sexual trauma she has to unpack at some point), but there aren't any anxieties about turning the other down and while they still verbally check in with each other they become extremely good at reading each other. I also imagine that during this time Astarion is able to fully re-explore the more wild kinds of sex, probably introducing Tav to quite a few things. Still, I imagine more often than not, their nights are fairly tame.

I do think there will be a point when Tav is much older where she'll realize just how much she's changed physically while Astarion has stayed exactly the same (regardless of if they have cured his vampirism or not). She would 100% have a small crisis of 'what if he doesn't find me attractive anymore?'. A crisis which probably would crop up again and again in her mind as she ages further. Astarion wouldn't find her less attractive by any means, but realizing that she is growing old would make him incredibly melancholy, probably somewhat clingy, and overly protective.

everything she knows about womanhood and love, she learned from her mother.

her father is violent and imposing, very proud and convinced about "being one of the last real men"

her mother often reminds lola of how beautiful she was when she was younger, before he got married and gave birth

she also learnt from her mother that love means it doesn't matter how bad they treat you, you have to stay

but she also learnt that being in a relationship will always be about a man dictating a woman's life and having all the power over her, which. she didn't like one bit

especially when she reached high school (she wasn't at bullworth in her freshman year) and she saw some of her girl schoolmates

so, since she also knew for sure that men always want one thing from women (do we really need to say what that thing is?), she used the only power she thought women really have to gain control of her surroundings, as long as she is still young and beautiful enough

on one side, she adores the way johnny adores her, puts her on a pedestal, takes care of her in wall they ways she can't of herself

and sometimes it's also cute that he hits and fights any other guy who goes as far as laying his eyes on her one second too long

but she hates how he questions her every move and how he wants to know about all of her friends and about where she is all the time - it feels a bit too close to that power dynamic she was trying to avoid the whole time

but at the same time. they can't leave. she is no quitter and neither is johnny. so she tries to grab his attention and let him see - do you see how easily you could lose me? do you see how much i have the power to drive you crazy if i just want to?

very very unhealthy and purposefully destructive if you ask me. but that's what we do around here innit

in general she doesn't trust men. just- no.

there's only one human being who belongs in the masculine area of the gender spectrum whom she trusts from her heart, him being peanut.

I had a hc that Tails before meeting Sonic was called plenty of [nick]names, many not being very nice. And Sonic; in tangent of helping Tails embrace his skills and abnormality, gave him his famed nickname as a means to empower that, instead of being used to downplay them like the bullies did.

But I don't think I ever had it come back to Tails hating his real name. Just prefers his nickname being used in most cases. (Even with AOSTH; just always seem like mainly a western perception.) I will say I find it ironic when it comes to certain 'years later' stories, some fans have him drop his nickname almost entirely cause it's less "professional" than his real one. (Hardly ever seems to be a setting where he embraces both.)

I get it, though I personally prefer Sonic not being involved here. 1) A lot of people think this is already canon and it's kinda annoying; 2) I think it's better if it's Tails's choice, not Sonic's (it's Tails showcasing his growth and agency & self-identity vs "Isn't Sonic just sooo nice and sweet and supportive uwu". Sometimes things that are about Tails... could be about Tails. And not about how great of a big brother Sonic is); 3) I still think it's kind of mean? Even if done in a well meaning way. Unless Tails explicitly asked him to come up with a nickname/call him Tails. (Or if you want to characterize Sonic to be a bit mean, then I get it too. Tough love and all that)

I'd almost prefer it if Sonic nicknamed him Tails obliviously (and not because he tries to come up with a "better" name because he dislikes the other one or for it to be empowering) because Tails wouldn't/couldn't tell him his name for whatever reason, and then later on Tails giving him the ok to keep using it because he knows Sonic doesn't mean it in a bad way. I want to know that Tails actually made a choice to be called that.

(Sorry I ended up disagreeing with your headcanon pretty strongly, I guess I just have some strong feelings about it. Though both of our headcanons have the space to exist)

Yeah I don't think he hates it and I don't think he's written to hate it. (He's basically the only person who does use it, ironically. Well, aside from Sage, now)

(It's funny how people understand the concept of nicknames when it comes to Eggman. Also it's funny how Tails and Eggman ended up with a similar narrative about the names (got made fun of, but then embraced the nickname), it adds to the parallels between them, and what makes it funnier is that the two of them weren't supposed to have two names, it's a complete coincidence!)

I guess I could *kind of* see where people could be coming from when they make "Tails" kind of a childhood nickname that is only your family/close friends are allowed to use. (Though in some fics it's hard to take him seriously when he insists on going by "Miles". It's like he's trying too hard, haha.)

Personally I prefer it to stay as it is, my hc is that he made "Tails" his legal middle name (if he does indeed have legal documentation anywhere). It also helps to break up the "Miles Prower" pun which is perfect. (And makes him feel better about using his full name, ironically, through embracing the nickname)

Oof, this is a hard one. I'll be answering these by subclasses since that's the only way I can start singling out stuff - if you told me to pick an Ultimate Favorite Ship, we'd be here forever. Let's start with the dropships, for example. I *adore* the Albatross' design, and- oh, wait, this is about *singular* ships, isn't it. Oh, well, I won't be erasing my previous words. I am partial to the Spirit Of Fire due to it being a retrofitted colony ship. I'm grateful I got this question twice because I get to discuss various things. At the risk of it being too broad of an answer, I will say that one of my favorite aspects of Halo lore is the politics of future humanity. I haven't seen a lot of people talk about the Koslovics and Friedens and the Interplanetary War in general - though, granted, before the Mythos came out in 2016, they were only mentioned on Bungie's site and the Halo timeline on Xbox.com. I'm glad Mythos gave us some names to work with, but I can't help but yearn for more pre-Human-Covenant War political lore outside of the "Innies vs the UNSC" struggle. Do not get me started on the Colonial Military Authority and how the UNSC absorbed and dismantled them and the differences in the ways the two organizations operate.

after a bit of a hiatus, I am back to posting about The Rookie. My Thoughts from 5x06 The Reckoning 

We had a cold open! And it was kind of funny. Did it remind anyone of that PSA about many weapons a person could conceal, and at the end they pull a full-on rifle out of the guys' jeans? Anyone? 

Yawn - I don’t care where or when Nolan and Bailey wed. I just want Abigail to be there! Henry too!!

It is interesting to see them circle back to the Elijah Stone case - will there be any actual development, or is this to introduce Wes’ ex(who is a Rosalind lookalike?)

Juarez is not a fun character? I am not liking her. She is underwritten. She fell asleep on the job, STANDING UP, and Nolan didn’t light her up? Tim took pictures and made t-shirts. It feels like Nolan isn’t understanding his job of being a TO - even later in the episode he kind of flips and lets Angela know the idea was Juarez’s even though as her TO, especially at this stage in the game, any good she does is on him - but any bad she does is even more on his shoulders. I don’t feel like Nolan is teaching so much as he is letting her do things? Very different from any TO approach before. 

I have the same bronze top as Angela. I would not put it with leather pants, but that is just me. 😉

“Everyone loves James”, this is true. 

Celina is so unprofessional!! It makes me uncomfortable. 

Lucy knowing his coffee truck makes me think of season 1/2. Lots of old headcanons we concocted, and fic ideas. A memory of what it was like when Chenford rode together. 

J August Richards? Interesting to see the Whedon connection here. I often wonder how much Fillion’s credit is vanity vs actual; we see from Instagram that he does a lot of cool behinds the scenes things for the team, which makes me think he might have more say than he lets on. Giving a friend a role is nice! 

Tim’s favourite movie. Remaining unnamed just means we get to guess. I want it to be Princess Bride, but alas, it wasn’t filmed in LA. What if it was a muppet movie?!? It is objectively sad that the only person who knows Tim enough to do this is Lucy. I hope we get more Genny in the future, give him more people. 

I reserve the right to change my mind on this, but I appreciated that in the midst of Tim and Lucy having banter over the radios (and I do still feel the prank was childish) they did have a shared moment of connection. Even though Tim didn’t tell her what was going on, they dropped the act. 

Now Bailey is training Nolan’s rookie? 🫠 Her sleeping on Nolan’s couch?

Now Wesley is a cheater? Ugh. I hate past reveals that people were shitty. 

Angela’s hair!!! It’s curly again. 

Wait, he has never told Angela that he was engaged before her, or that he cheated. Those are pretty big red flags for me personally, and I know this is a tv show and it is not the same - but yikes.  As Keith Habersberger would say, “not in this climate!”

Angela in her deposition was as hard and sharp as we know and love her to be.

Okay, so let’s talk Chenford: I liked them this episode. I liked that Lucy tried, but when she felt it wasn’t working she stopped her game and let Tim know that she wasn’t going to push it. To me, this felt like a good callback to season 1/2 Chenford - Lucy knowing how to get Tim to open up. She knows how to push and when to pull back, and as a result, Tim told her the whole of it. 

While the Ashley/Tim breakup itself was badly done, at least he told her that it was Ashley. I feel like this is important. 

And then Lucy invites him to eat with them. The cajones. I am glad Tim declines. And that we got two look backs. 

Also, wardrobe does have clothes that make Lucy look good? Not hideous pants and oversized sweaters?? Hallelujah! Our girl was hot. 🔥

Elijah is back, back? Could he be the big bad for the next two episodes a la Rosalind? 😇

And that promo?!? Did you see Tim’s expression? Lucy’s eyebrow?

On a finale note, I think this season is running more smoothly than last simply because we have no had so many interrupted episodes. Last year it felt we had two episodes, then three weeks off, then one episode, then two weeks off, etc. etc. etc.

okay: i’ve done the toe scene from several thematic angles already, but i think a more granular text read is worth doing, because there are some very understandable misinterpretations of this scene floating about that rely on personal feelings and real world standards vs what the text gives us.

now, to be clear about something that feels... sort of obvious, but i will say anyway: when viewed in real life terms, the toe scene is very different. it’s bad to sneak up on people and cut off their toe in the night and make them eat said toe.

like, super really bad. for many reasons. we should not do such things, i do not endorse them. that’s legally and morally wrong and also, gross. yucky disgusting, in point of fact. 

but you have to meet fiction where it’s at to analyze it from a ‘what’s the text trying to convey, what’s going on in-world’ level. 

and in ofmd’s world, stede wasn’t super phased about ed’s face/off plan, lucius whacked jim in the head with a big branch trying to run away and then didn’t really bat an eyelash at jim stuffing him in a box and planning to murder him, etc. this is a world of outsized comical things happening, some of them violent. it’s like gonzo getting stretched on the rack in muppet treasure island— if we take that as the real world equivalent and go ‘gonzo is secretly traumatized, even if he’s grinning and yelling POOOOODLEY POODLEY POODLEY!!!’, it’s missing the specific rules the story is playing by.

we have to hold the standards of the text in place when it’s not the ‘i know this isn’t canon’s take, but this is how i want to play with the paper dolls anyway as is my right’ headcanon lane. which is not to devalue said lane— love me some of that lane, but it is a different lane.

now, all that said: within canon, we are not meant to be like ‘yay ed! good job! this is a thing we should root for and a good choice! do it more, this is actually good for anybody involved!’ it’s a choice ed makes in full possession of his faculties, and it is a bad one.

however: the toe scene doesn’t come out of nowhere, and the text does not set it up as a method of real punishment or act of singular brutality.

in e9, ed says he’s tired of “making some poor bloke eat his own toes as a laugh.” and drinking all day. and biting the heads off turtles. you know! just normal stuff. (he also says he wants to be just edward, which implies those activities are not what he considers just being himself which is sort of beside the point here, but a very deft piece of writing that i love and wanted to shout out.)

this show is very, very careful with wording in important moments, even while they allowed for an amazing amount of very cool improv to breathe in between those moments. arguing for a lack of intentionality in random areas seems to be a little bit of an odd stance— we all seem to agree they were very careful and thoughtful in general.

so ed tells us there: cutting off multiple toes and making somebody eat them was something that happened enough he brought it up alongside something as commonplace as drinking all day/turtle head mastication, and it was considered ‘a laugh’.

now, i’m with stede (and the overall narrative) when i say where’s the laugh in that? once again: i do not endorse the cutting off of toes. only you can prevent weird toe crimes, by not fucking doing them.

but e9 contextualizes this within the world of ofmd for us. when ed was hiding in plain sight under the mantle and then the legend of blackbeard, he cut off toes for a laugh. it seems like he never actually liked it that much via ‘poor bloke’, but either way the text has told us: blackbeard cut off toes and made people eat them, casual-like and often enough it’s mentioned in the same breath as going on a bender. the text reaffirms this in specific through ed in e9 and in general in e8 through jack.

so, that leads me to izzy. who has lived with and served under blackbeard for years, and who tells us he was initially attracted to that legend when he mentions becoming ed’s first mate in e4. 

izzy says he was “honored to work for the legendary blackbeard. the most brilliant sailor i had ever met.”

again, the wording is precise: izzy just told us he first met blackbeard. the legendary blackbeard, to be exact, and the most brilliant sailor izzy had ever met. 

so when they met ed was already a brilliant sailor. a legend with a name already made and established, one izzy was attracted to and wanted to work for.

izzy is not so hot at defining his subjective emotional realities or those of the people around him (or... noticing them happening at all) but we see no evidence he is incapable of recalling general timeline of empirical events— in fact, he accurately assesses the passage of literal time as a plot point but misreads the emotional room over and over as well in the same function, so the show is careful with this as they are careful with just about everything.

so izzy wanted to work for a legend. the text tells us so, and i want to be understanding about missing that subtlety in wording and wanting to create a backstory where ed and izzy built blackbeard together. in a vacuum, there’s nothing wrong with that! however, we don't live in a vacuum, we live in a society (tm), and giving izzy credit for ed’s past and his history and efforts unfortunately ends up unconsciously echoing some of the very same patterns the show is deconstructing by purposefully having izzy do that very thing.

because why would we think ed needed izzy to build blackbeard? on this show, of all shows, why would the text be implicitly arguing that ed needed a white man to help create his legend? that he was not smart and careful and talented enough to become the legendary blackbeard on his own, without izzy to guide his steps and keep him safe?

to be honest, on a less careful show, one that emulates old patterns instead of examining and then breaking them, aka ...most shows? i think that would be the story.

ofmd is much more self-aware, as far as i can tell. izzy tells us he wanted to work for a legend and a brilliant sailor; why would we not just believe the characters when they say ed became all that on his own, and izzy was drawn to the legend because ed is just that skilled despite any given limitation the world/his own mind or body puts on him?

that’s not a question i’m asking facetiously. there’s a reason ancient aliens-type shows and theories exist and those kind of people are very rarely like ‘i bet these ancient white people had no fucking idea what they were doing and needed aliens to teach them how to build their massive and technologically advanced civilizations’. sometimes they do argue that! i don't want to argue in bad faith, myself. it does happen on occasion that the accidental condescension gets spread around— but if you look at the bigger picture, there’s a clear pattern in which groups people find it hard to believe did anything impressive all on their own.

and again: i get missing the subtlety here, just like i get missing that fang’s izzy spewing out both ends anecdote is a set-up for a montezuma’s revenge/overall izzy is a metaphor colonizer stuff. i actually missed the montezuma joke myself on first watch, so i’m not out to scold anybody or to be like ‘fuck you for not knowing any of this already’; i’m just trying to point out the fly in the ointment, and hope people think deeper about this stuff before firing off a take that echoes these patterns on accident.

okay, all that said: back to the text and the toe itself.

it's very understandable to process the toe scene as a punishment. ed says threaten me again and more toes WILL BE TAKEN as he does it, which when removed from the larger context of eating toes tuesday being a regular thing in ed and thus also izzy’s old life, seems much more intense. 

not to mention that’s how any normal human would react to what the fuck happens there. i myself would be HORRIFIED, once again i do not endorse non-consensual toe cannibalism and have no comment on any consensual versions other than ‘yeah, i read that hannibal fic too, and it was weird then hate to kink shame but i do not wish to have my toe cut off so i may consume it. please stop asking me about toe cannibalism as anything but thematic meat. this is a strange place to find myself in.’

but izzy is not us, the audience. izzy is a daddy moaning little nightmare. he wants to touch fire: he is the least healthy masochist on gay god’s green earth and the deep blue sea. he is weeeeeird about this shit and has never even heard of the acronym ss&c, let alone rack. 

he is the sort of man who is like ED. BE A TOE CUTTING LEATHER DADDY. THAT IS WHAT IS COOL AND FUN FOR ALL OF US, NOBODY LOSES HERE. LOL EXCEPT ME! I LOSE A TOE, AND I MAKE IT EVEN WEIRDER WHEN I REFUSE TO BE ANYTHING BUT THRILLED ABOUT IT.

within the world ofmd created, they made sure to set up that Ye Olde Blackbearde cut off toes for a laugh. and one episode after they carefully gave us that precedent, izzy thrust a monstrous caricature of ed in his face and said: this is blackbeard. by no logical leap could izzy possibly be ignorant of the forced toe-eating, regularly done as just a fun little game to play at sea, just like drinking all day, or biting the heads off turtles. not if he’s known ed for years and was attracted to the legend of a man who did shit like that.

so izzy is saying to ed: be this guy again. the narrative made sure we know part of that is being the guy who casually cuts off toes for a laugh.

so when izzy smiles that big ridden hard and put away wet smile and proclaims hey la, hey la my boyfriend’s back? he's being sincere. he wanted ed to be the guy who cuts off toes like it’s not a thing again, and edward did that for him. he’s been reassured that the old blackbeard is himself again, and that’s why he says so. 

(and that’s why canon set it up so that we would know: this toe thing is an old, established bit, which was not done as anything but a fun little prank.)

now, if anybody wants to write fic in the real world logic applies au, i will not poop upon that party. that’s not my issue, in part because i also think there’s utility to saying yeah but counterpoint, canon: i do what i want. 

my angle is that if we talk textual analysis and actual canon, we have to meet stories and characters on their level and look at the world from their perspective. 

ed and izzy (and jack, which is a lot of his narrative utility in e8 beyond just throwing a wrench in the works and setting up the arc with the navy and thus endgame, fuuuuuck me running these writers are just ridiculously good) both reaffirm this, in their separate ways.

textually, the person who most hates the toe scene is ed. izzy said be the guy cut toes off again; ed said he doesn’t want to do that. that’s the text itself, no extrapolation.

now, having said all that: i hope and assume izzy will come to realize this shit is very weird and bad behavior, knock it off and then course correct. 

to own my personal bias, my activist fantasy is not that men like izzy— or my personal izzys, for values of people who actively hurt me in specific— suffer or that they feel exactly what they made me feel. my fantasy is they wake up one morning, look at me, and go well fuck. i’ve been kinda shitting the bed here, huh? i’m gonna fight for my natural allies now, not against them. solidarity!!!! then i am validated, they can become happier people, and there’s one more of Us and one less of Them. the better world i’m fighting for ultimately wins, in that fantasy.

i’m not saying that’s where anyone else has to be, to be clear; it’s just where i’m at.

so when i try to read the tea leaves on the potential of that being what happens with izzy, i could 100000000% be reading in what i would like to see and not what is there. that’s always a thing that could happen, on any given prediction, and to say otherwise would be silly.

however: when it comes to the toe and its precedent and context, that’s not attempting to suss out future movement. that’s reading the text with my own biases acknowledged and set to the side as much as possible, and trying to see what the characters of this world, with this world’s rules feel about what happened vs what i would feel, in my world with my rules.

because, i must reiterate to close: oh GOD, i do not endorse the nonconsensual cutting off of toes. just don’t do it.

tldr: it’s important to recognize the tropes we might be reinforcing on accident, and though the toe scene is horrifying real world terms in terms of how izzy the character in the text’s world processes it, the toe is ed coming through for him and being the blackbeard of the old days— who we were purposefully told used to regularly cut off toes and feed them to people as a laugh.

...and just. because i think i might have to, just one final time for good measure: please don’t cut off people’s toes. nothing in this piece is an endorsement of doing that in our real world. it's bad.

More headcanons I thought of since the last one

- Prince Fluff (gijinka, I don’t think puffballs can do this) knows how to do ariel silk so he has a tendency to just fall out of trees right next to people at eye level, scaring them as he dangles

- that does mean he hangs around with Taranza quite a bit.

-After the events of epic yarn, Fluff trained himself to properly use his whip to the point where fighting him is actually scary. He also uses it to grab things he needs, wether it be on the top shelf or just out of hands reach. He uses it so often that he’s able to grab a full cup without it spilling, very spiderman like.

-DDD is stupid good at rhythm games, mostly taiko no tatsujin; Meta enjoys shoot/beat ‘em ups and bullet hells; Kirby mainly plays puzzle games and platformers

-None of the main 4 Meta-Knights are cis. There is no way.

-The only plant that Kirby can keep alive are (maxim) tomato plants, he has tried branching out. It does not work.

-Morpho Knight makes their own teas, most are floral.

- Meta can’t drive. Legally or physically. Don’t let him drive anything, he is impatient and will always speed and crash. No, he can’t drive the Halberd either, that’s what Axe Knight is for

- All the star allies have a star somewhere on their uniforms/armor/clothing, very Steven Universe/crystal gem like, I thought it’d be cool

- DDD was definitely the type to make bad interior design decisions. Like, he would put a shirt on a hanger and put it on the wall or paint his walls that one bright aqua color that every kid painted their walls and/or have an eyesore of a wallpaper. Thank Nova for the dees.

Also, all the star allies, and just most of Kirby’s friends, are close with one another and will often train and spar together. This not only gives me the excuse to pair up random characters to do mundane stuff like shopping and hanging out, but also let’s me make random scenarios for the on and off battlefield:

- going back to Fluff, he typically tries to get his opponent’s weapons out of their hand, if they don’t have a weapon, oh well.

- Fluff also figured out that he could grab and throw people, this ended up in him accidentally grabbing Meta Knight’s leg as he was in the air and slamming him on the ground. There was already quite a crowd, so the silence was deafening. (Meta recovered quick and was very impressed).

- DDD found out that hitting the ground hard enough will disorientate people, he uses it frequently

- Ribbon is one to rush, making quick, fast, up-close movements

- Taranza lays webs everywhere he can, one wrong step and you’re wrapped up like a present

- Ribbon vs Susie = cowboy standoff

- Marx just tries to scare people out of bounds, he has no plans

- The animal friends and the mage sisters just enjoy having like 8 people on the field

- Bandana dee and Fluff like to play sandbox and simulator games (think slime rancher, stardew valley, job simulator, the sims, etc.) it’s very calming.

- Those born/made in the mirror and yarn dimensions don’t feel pain as strongly as others, especially out of their own dimensions. This does mean Fluff and Dark Meta have, on multiple occasions, have worked themselves to exhaustion, but they’re never by themselves when they get too tired, as stubborn as they both are that they don’t need help.

 - Parasol, Sailor, and Bandana dee are all identical triplets, only in looks though, personality wise, very few similarities.

- When Dreamland was no longer yarn, Fluff hated the way grass and water felt. On the other hand, gooey, dark matter swordsman, 0, 02, etc, love the way grass feels

- Sailor dee is very good at sewing, if anyone on the Halberd has a tear in their clothes or wants something made, they go to Sailor. None of them know how to buy formal wear, Sailor makes all of it. Spear Knights likes to help.

- Queen Ripple, Prince Fluff, and DDD like to hang out. They don’t act all royally, they already do that all day, what usually happens is they get take out, crash on the couch of whoever’s castle is closest and gossip

- Gooey, Parasol Dee, and Nago sun bathe and nap together.

- Flamberge and Dark Meta are good at death metal screams, neither of them even listen to any genre of metal.

- Meta Knight is still in contact with Sword and Blade Knight, he makes sure to invite them whenever a big event is going on

How do you think Jasper handled his gift when they joined the Cullens?

I personally headcanon that Alice and Jasper made them aware of its existence, however Jasper refrained from using the 'active' part of it (influencing others) for a good while out of respect for the Cullen's personal boundries and because he wanted to avoid them thinking he 'made' them like him and Alice.

He was miserable during most of that time because of suddenly being around six vampires with very different emotional climates and feeling them all at the same time is not fun (yes, newborns, but they are mostly anger and thirst, so one ball of the same emotions while Emmett could totally be entertained seeing Rosalie and Edward fight, Esme could fear for the life of her new antique dresser and Alice could be bored because she saw the argument and its outcome already) but he did it anyway because he did not want to risk ruining Alice's dream of a belonging to that family.

Looking forward to reading youe thoughts!

love this question. innnteresting! I know @jessicanjpa has kind of the opposite take, that jasper was so paranoid he used his ability on the others without telling them about it for the first while.

I myself have honestly never thought about it, but I like both? I can see things going either way, depending on how well alice had managed to convince him of their safety at that point, whether he had taught her to fight yet, and various other factors.

I have to kinda disagree with that last paragraph—I don't think disparate emotions would feel as bad as uniform-but-overwhelmingly-negative ones. if anything, I would imagine it creates more equilibrium, closer to how a normal, non-pathokinetic person experiences a range of emotions over their day. I bet the emotions of the cullens, where any negativity is mostly limited to the ongoing edward vs rosalie rancor and (probably) some healthy general suspicion of jasper and alice as newcomers, would seem like a cakewalk after the years of violence and backstabbing in the vampire army, horrifying death throes of human prey, and even the awkward pity of peter and charlotte. jasper even says in eclipse that "this is a climate I enjoy." I'm sure it was an adjustment after hanging out with only alice for years, but it seems to me like a relatively easy one, especially considering alice is his #1 emotional connection and she must have been delirious with joy and excitement for that initial period.

but yes, I think you're right on the money that however the truth of jasper's gift came out, there would have to be a conversation about boundaries. I think rosalie in particular would be like absolutely NOT, don't you DARE influence my emotions. edward too—he's a self-admitted masochist, I think he would consider any kind of artificial mood-lifting to be Cheating And Cowardly—he thinks he deserves to suffer. esme and emmett wouldn't much care, especially once they got to know and trust jasper a bit. carlisle would be mainly concerned that jasper use his influence respectfully, and not for personal gain or long-term manipulation, and then pretty hands-off after those caveats.

in the books jasper seems to deploy his gift whenever however, with zero permission and total impunity (see: knocking bella fully unconscious with a pathokinetic crowbar to the head.) but to me that feels like yet another case of smeyer using something As The Plot Demands and not bothering to consider the full implications. she retconned jasper's gift into being "physical," she retconned him into having basically the power of invisibility in midnight sun...,it doesn't exactly smack of thoughtful worldbuilding and characterization to me. super fun and interesting to play around with for us fans, though!
