How To Make A Build-A-Bear Dye Without Killing It:

Me: If this is Paddington, why is he white?

Build-A-Bear: Oh my god Rowan, you can’t just ask why Paddington’s white!

Paddington is currently one of Build-A-Bear’s cutest and plushiest options. However he’s also significantly lighter-furred than either the recent movie, the classic television show, or even the original illustrations made him. My sponsor being a fan of the Paddington TV show, I was asked to experiment to see if I could correct this by dying him, in a long-lasting, no rub-off way, whilst maintaining the gorgeous fluffy texture of the fur.

And shockingly...yes. Yes, you actually can.

Now as far as I can tell, if you can do it with this plushy baby, you should be able to do this with any Build-A-Bear. Probably any bear full-stop, but I’m not responsible if you re-dye that toy tiger you’ve had since you were a baby and it crozzles into a little plastic ball. Be smart, be responsible, be sure you can buy another one of whatever you’re dying in case you screw up. Remember even if it all works, you might still not get the colour you want. Dying’s a lottery.

Disclaimers over, you will need,

A Bear.

Rit DyeMore Synthetic in the colour of your choice. (Cocoa Brown if you’re doing this Paddington).

A big metal pot than can go on the stove. Bigger than the one you’re thinking of right now.

A cooking thermometer is highly encouraged - look you’re buying the dye, you might as well spring for this too, you’ll find uses for it.

Nice smelling washing-up liquid.

Rubber gloves if you’re not an idiot.

A big wooden spoon that can reach the bottom of your pot.

Basic sewing supplies (don’t panic, nothing arduous)

Ideally an extra person in case of emergencies (these include: when it turns out you can’t stir a pot continuously for over thirty minutes, when you splash yourself with scalding-hot dye and need someone to stir while you hold your hand under cold water, when you apparently don’t have the coordination to stir, check temperature, and keep track of time all at once, etc.)

And before you begin, offer a prayer and thanks to @tokozdragon whose own experimentations allowed me to stand on the shoulders of a giant. Theirs was one of the most helpful bits of information I came across in my research, and is how you’re gonna hopefully keep that fluff nice and gorgeous.

So. Build-A-Bears are seemingly synthetic top to bottom. Certainly this one is. I couldn’t find any tags saying anything other than 100% polyester, man-made fibres. Now this is a bad thing when it comes to dying, because the dyes can’t penetrate and hold in the same way. You wash it, everything’ll immediately rinse out. But Rit Synthetic Dye, does work. The only catch is, you’re gonna have to get it to just below boiling point. And if you’ve ever left a cuddly toy against a radiator before, you might know that these things do not like heat.

But there is a trick to this. You’re gonna diverge from your dye instructions just a little bit, but it’s going to work so long as you’re really on the ball.

First of all, check to see that your bear will fit in your pot - physically put it in there - and check if it could move freely and be covered with water. No? Then you’re gonna do what I did, and frankly what I suggest: You’re going to unstuff your bear. Get a clean box, find a seam (the BAB tag is perfect for this if it’s still got it on) pull until you see threads, have courage, and snip. You can put them back together, I promise. I left the head and arms stuffed for Paddington because it would fit, and they’d be more difficult to restuff. You might want to as well. Keep your heart (and tracking barcode) safe, as well as all that stuffing. Now you may have someone who looks like this:

Next, it’s bath time. No, don’t skip this step. Get a little of your nice washing-up liquid, just a small drizzle, and some warm water. Nothing hot, not close to hot - baby bath temperature. Give your bear a gentle wash, to remove any coatings or oils or dirt, and rinse them out well under more warm water. Make sure to squeeze it through any remaining stuffed bits too. You don’t need to go overboard though, a bit of soap left over is gonna be fine.

While you’re doing that, you’re going to heat up your dye to just below teddy bath temperature.

This is where we start to deviate from instructions.

You’re gonna put that dye in right away, while it’s still cool. I needed about 5 litres of water for my pot, and used about a quarter of a bottle of dye (somewhere between 6-8 tablespoons). You can see how Cocoa Brown turned out here. Obviously if you want a weaker colour, use a few spoons less. If you don’t get it perfect straight away, don’t worry about it, you can add more later if you have to, but again remember your ideal colour is not guaranteed.

Then add a small trickle of washing-up liquid to the dye. Less than a teaspoon, but it’s going to help the dye catch.

When your dye is just about bear-temperature, still really low, you are going to immerse your bear, while the temperature’s still going up. That’s right, we’re doing it now. What we’re trying to do is not shock the fur by giving it a sudden temperature change - plunging it into 90°C dye like you’d usually do. Instead we’re gonna boil it like a frog in a pot.

You are gonna stir this baby continuously, and treat it like a video game level you can’t afford to fail. Bits that float, squeeze em and squish em back down. Nothing stays still. You stop stirring? You’ve failed. And never, ever, ever, let it touch the bottom of the pot for even a second without you moving it away. Treat this early temperature where you can still put your hand in it as your test, and get a rhythm up. Using your gloved hands (or not, but it’s gonna make your nailbeds look weird for days), squeeze the dye thoroughly through your still-stuffed areas, make sure everything’s evenly covered, because once this dye goes past 50°C you’re going to be using your spoon only.

Then just keep stirring. If your arms get tired, this is why you have your emergency standby buddy. Check the temperature occasionally. When it gets up to about 80°C this is when the dye will actually start activating. Keep the heat going, but check your time. If you can’t easily see a clock and don’t have a buddy, you definitely can’t afford to stop stirring now, so start counting one-Mississippi, two-Mississippi, up to about 240-Mississippi. For everyone else, go to about 4-5 minutes, maybe having your buddy check the temperature as you go. If you hit a boil - you’re seeing bubbling - turn the heat off. What we’re aiming to do is give it about 4 minutes in the 85-max 95°C range, so you choose when to shut your heat off - you know your cooker better than I do.

After your heat is off keep stirring as it drops its temperature, remembering it’s just as delicate a procedure as when you were heating it up, it still can’t touch that hot metal for too long. When it gets down to about 60°C, if you or your emergency buddy can easily (and I mean easily, with no difficulties at all) lift that pot to put it in a cold water bath in your sink, you could do that, but if your wrist suddenly gives out or something that is a hell of a lot of hot water that will mess you up. If in doubt, you gotta just keep stirring for as long as it takes for the pot to cool back down to bath temperature. Don’t try and lift the bear out and put it in the sink early, just do it properly.

Once you’re down to relatively cool again, lift the bear and squeeze the dye out. Then transfer them to your sink. Run water at about the same temperature, and rinse them thoroughly.

When the worst of the dye stops coming out, then it’s time for bath time yet again. More of that nice smelling washing-up liquid, soap them up good, and watch that sink get all colourful again.

Then keep rinsing them, replacing the water until it stays clear and free from soap.

And then all you need to do is wait for them to dry!k

(If you don’t have a hairdryer that works on a cool setting, then just squeeze them with paper towels to get the worst of the water out, and fluff em up a little bit every now and again, moving that fur, and making sure it ends up roughly in the direction it should be so it doesn’t dry too oddly.

Then the next day when they’re dry, brush them up a bit, and give them a re-stuff, making sure to give that heart-wish a little booster when you put it back in. (And put that odd little barcode you probably found in there right next to it - that’s one of the ways a lost bear can find its way back to you. You never know). Then to stitch up the hole, use a ladder stitch. Google it to find instructions that work for you, but that’s the clever invisible stitch you’ll need. And if you can’t do that last bit for any reason, I’ve never found a Build-A-Bear shop that won’t help fix up a bear (and they’d probably be interested in your dye test. You could probably even get a scent put in if you’re good at sweet talking).

And voila, one spiffy bear.

Who in this case, had all his stuffing given a rub down with sweet orange essential oil, the perfect scent for any bear who carries an emergency marmalade sandwich.

Of course if you’re going the full Classic Television Paddington, then a bit of work with some black felt and ribbon is still required. The red hat should be enough for you to mirror a pattern. I suggest 2mm or 3mm thick felt (and you’ll need a metre/whatever rather than A4 if you want to do the...sticky-up-bit of the hat all in one go like the red hat). And 1.5-2cm ribbon (but I had 1cm so that’s what I used). The brim is about the size of a dinner plate, and you could cut the circle for the top out of the middle of that if you’re trying to conserve materials.

Bonus cuteness: I think Orlando the Thirteenth Doctor Bear makes a very good movie Paddington.

Middle man: (turns away from customer) she says she has the money and that she knows about the side effect, what do I say.

Shipping God: don’t tell her anything. Say we do not sell this product.

Middle Man: I’m sorry ma’am we do not sell this product, you will have to try somewhere else.

Customer: (to audience) contrary to popular cinematic convention, (whips out giant gun) I’m not going to whip out a giant gun and threaten the guy, because I can’t get what I want. (throws gun over shoulder)

Customer: it’s a beauty product! I mean, can’t I for a moment take my own health into my own hands…?! (scoff)

Shipping God: tell her, it’s her health.

Middle Man: it’s your health, ma’am.

Fred: oh my god I hate youuuuuuu…(said like, hi how are you?)

*throws a punch

Jim: you have no idea (said like, its been a while how are you? Using fake smiles.)

Fred: I’m going to kill you over that incident with my wife.

*put gloves back on and start punching again

Jim: tell her I’d knock her up, that’ll do it. .

*cease punching for a moment, jim and fred grab each other by the shoulders and say

Fred: we should all just have kids withal the wimmin. Leave no womin unimpregnated. 24/7.

Jim: yeah, what kind of society is this? What are we even doing here, I mean why isn’t 24/7 baby making like, the norm??

*resumes punching. Jim continues punching as Fred stops to contemplate

Fred: I’m gonna try and answer that. Perhaps it’s just not the right time in earth’s geological cycle to support that kind of reproduction, the food plants are not growing enough. They are sending us an internal, instinctual message that this is kind of life is not supportable at the moment.

Fred continues punching as Jim states

Jim: very logical, I think that’s the reason. So again, why do you hate me? Because Barbara needed you to be jealous so that she feels valued?

*fight stops for a second

Fred: I’m not the type to say to her, ‘but hey Barbara, you scored me and Jim!’

- maybe I should say to her, ‘you’re an individual’, that wouldn’t go down that well, maybe ‘you’re special, there’s only one of you’.

Jim: try saying, ‘you suit me uniquely’

Laughter from Fred and Jim

*resume punching. They punch for a while. Jim goes down cold, Fred states

Fred: it’s just like I don’t even know, there’s no one like her or anyone for that matter. Even twins are different. So like, I can’t value her anymore at the moment.

‘Other people’ are constantly trying to catch ‘main character’ in “the act” of taking heroin but ‘main character’ actually never takes heroin so they will never catch them.

‘Other people’ cry and wail and state “when do you do it, I know that you do!” and grab him by the arm, to check for track marks.

‘Main character’ always begs ‘other people’ to believe that “I don’t do that, seriously. I don’t know what else to say.”

SCENARIOS:

17 Questions for 17 People

Thanks @its-bianca for tagging me in this! Sorry it’s taken so long, we’re in a third lockdown and I’m pretty sure my body thinks that time no longer exists.

Nicknames: Kim, Kimbo, Kimberlim, Kimothy, Kimberley Dibberley (For some reason my family thought that a nickname based off Cat’s other personality from Red Dwarf, Dwayne Dibberley, was funny and it’s stuck with me my whole life), as well as KIIII (shouted by my sister when she was about 2 and couldn’t pronounce my name, my best friend now yells it when she wants my attention) and Kim-Kim by my Dad who refuses to believe I’ve grown up (beats Kimberley Dibberley any day)

Height: 5'9 - towering over most men is fun, I suggest it to all of you, I’d rather round it up to six foot, but I probs stopped growing at 20.

Hogwarts House: Well I got Gryffindor when I first went on that site, but being my goth self I had to take the test again until I got Slytherin - as far as I remember I had unicorn hair (or horn?) or something of the like in my wand but I’m not gonna fuel JK’s anti-trans pockets by visiting Pottermore ever again.

Last thing I googled: The soundtrack for Futurama’s Luck of the Fryrish episode, I knew Simple Minds were on it but I could’ve sworn Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty was on it, but apparently not. I spent a good half hour trying to sing it into google with their new song-analysis thing to no avail, so I ended up siphoning through all the songs Lisa Simpson has ever played on her Sax to find out what it was (I should be doing my dissertation proposal but my tutors haven’t got back to me yet so what can ye do).

Song stuck in my head: yknow wha I’m just gonna list the songs that have been stuck in my head so far today because it’s too many to be just one as I keep cycling through them (also gonna link them so you can see how garbo weird my music taste is)

I’ll add my current favourite at the bottom too for good measure (Honestly I spend way too much time listening to music and I regret nothing)

Number of followers: Currently 85. I’ve got about 2k on my main blog but I’ve not touched that since July 2017.

Amount of sleep: Good lord, so I aim for 8 hours, sometimes I only get 5.5 or something along those lines, other times I depression nap during the day and can’t sleep at all, sometimes (like this morning) I’ll go to get up at a normal person time such as 9am when my body naturally wakes me up, but it’s so dark and gloomy outside and cold in my room that I just stay in bed and end up accidentally falling back asleep. 12pm gang rise up xo

Dream Job: Hopefully I get somewhat successful in monetising my hobbies, I’m working on it all atm (I don’t know why but I really hate telling people about my plans because I’m deathly afraid they’ll mock me or do whatever they can to ensure it doesn’t happen, I’ve got this list of things I need to do for my own mental health sellotaped to my laptop stand that had things like when to clean the house, do my laundry, shower, exercise etc, and my old flatmate/friend saw it the other week and mocked me, so I haven’t followed it since and need to find some sort of other way of organising my life instead). But yeah, hopefully hobby based, I don’t want to be stuck in an office job all my life, and I want to leave the UK (although I don’t want to leave my family) so hopefully I’ll be successful enough to bring em all with me.

Wearing: Well I was gonna wear jeans and my Unus Annus longsleeve but I decided to go full kitchen witch and wear this black milkmaid looking dress with long sleeves that I’d bought for work when I got my thigh tattoo started (all the old men appreciated the legs but I didn’t make any more tips, oops)

Favourite song: My favourite song of all time would be The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony , the band formed at my college, has great meaning and has resonated with me since I first saw the music video after it was played at my Stepdad’s funeral in 2002. Weirdly enough on my last day of college, right after my last exam, I went to get the bus home - put my Spotify on shuffle (bearing in mind I’ve got 805 songs on this playlist) and this came on straight away. That’s probably not important to most people, but being pagan, I like to think that small things like these are signs from loved ones that have since passed. Not too happy that it’s used as the England Rugby theme because it gives me anxiety every time as though I feel like everyone hearing it doesn’t have the same emotional connection with the song as I do, but idk. I saw Richard Ashcroft live and he played this and I legit bawled my eyes out in public, safe to say I’ll try and hold it in next time. I suggest you all have a listen to the song or even watch the music video for it, it’s the most simple but most meaningful music video to me.

Favourite Instrument: I’m left handed and I had this Yamaha acoustic guitar that my stepdad gave me - and taught me to play when I was about 5, a few months before he died (it’s still weird to me that I had no idea he had cancer at that point and instead spent his last few months teaching me his favourite hobbies) all he had was right handed guitars, so he taught me to play Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters upside down on this 20 odd year old right handed acoustic. He hadn’t played upside down himself before but did it so I could see what he was doing. I remember sitting in our green living room on the couch with him moving my hands to the right position (I don’t know where my mum was in this scenario, probably in the kitchen). He’d brought this guitar with him the first day I met him, it was probably like 11pm but I was 4 and thought it was 3am or something, but I heard voices coming from the living room and had gone to investigate - there sat my mum and my stepdad having Chinese on the living room floor, laughing together, my stepdad saw me and had brought sweets for me and my brother for when we woke up, but he beckoned me over, gave me a lollipop, stuck a two litre bottle of tizer in front of me and told me to dip the lollipop in the drink and lick it (not a good idea as I would’ve been bouncing off the walls, but I think I must’ve had a sugar crash and fallen asleep). My mum had no idea he was coming as he’d sneakily been texting her, asking what her favourite drink was, her favourite food and flowers etc, after they met in a pub when my mum was at a hostel with my brother after my Dad had taken me. My mum told him that the council had given her a place and he decided to show up and surprise her with all her favourite things and play guitar for her after my brother and I had gone to bed, I don’t remember much time passing before we’d moved into his house (where my mum and her new husband live to this day), but they got married a few months later and I still can’t play that Metallica song (I did try to teach myself more of it though). I also had this black left handed Ibanez prestige that my Dad got me for Christmas about 9 years ago, I could play quite a lot on it but eventually just stopped. Very good at piano though.

Aesthetic: I’m not sure what this entails but I’m a sucker for neon/RGB/cityscapes and that type of malarkey. Also space. Love da space. Also whatever Cornwall would be considered as. Cottagecore? I think that’s only an animal crossing related aesthetic but I’m claiming it nonetheless.

Favourite Author: I’m a big goth so it has to be Stephen King by default. I’ve got copious first editions of his books from the 70′s and 80′s that my Mum bought when she was a teen. At my flat I’ve got Carrie, Christine, Salem’s Lot, Misery and The Shining first editions and the others are in my room at my Mum’s house. I don’t tend to read for joy like I used to, or write for fun either but I’m hoping I do more in 2021. Currently reading The Outsider by King, it sounds eerily familiar to a novel I wrote for coursework in college in 2014 and I’m half pressed to think he’s stole my brain ideas. I’m watching you Stephen. Always watching. Always.

Favourite animal sounds: I don’t have favourite sounds, but my husky Nanook is my favourite animal because he’s dumb and I love him. Also Kookaburra sounds are terrifying and you all should go listen to what a koala sounds like. When I go to Adelaide (hopefully this year, if not next) I am NOT stepping foot in a nature reserve unless I’ve got an anti-kookaburra noise suit on. They obviously don’t exist so I’m gonna have to make one.

Random: I’m part of a viking reenactment group where they use actual swords and fight each other, and we have to basically sign our lives away when we join, to say that if we die, it’s not the groups fault. I don’t actually do the fighting though, I’m part of the villager group, so I do all the crafting and food making and most of the teaching when we do shows. I’ve not yet been to a show as I’ve had uni to go to, but my parents, sister and brother do - They stayed within Whitby Abbey last year during the Viking festival where everyone did the show and the adults got drunk round campfires in the castle grounds. Zacky Vengeance once complimented my shirt if that’s something. I’m also colourblind, got glared at by Liam Gallagher in the Liverpool Echo Arena parking lot and have too accurate a sense of smell.

Sorry this was so long, obviously I felt like word-dumping and my brain has a lot to say as I find too much meaning in these things. Thanks again for tagging me! Open Doors = Opportunity Part 3

Okay, shoe arrangements, check! Clothing arrangements - Check! All signs up - Check! Ahh heck, what’s the point, it’s all about to be ruined anyway...what with the crazy mob pushing against the glass and what not...GEEZ, you’d think people have better things to do at 7:30 am on Friday...like maybe GET READY FOR WORK?! I wonder how many of these shopaholics booked the day off? Or even didn’t book the day off but shops right before work?! That’s pure commitment right there. Either they really dumb for putting way too much effort into this, or they’re really smart for getting all these good deals...I mean, this store only gives our least selling products the major discounts cause I mean, we do wanna bring in that cash while not being that store who doesn’t give out discounts on Black Friday. Okay back to making sure everything is set. Everyone has their assigned jobs, experienced employees would be at cashier counters, and the younglings that are our newbies would be the retail associates. I know, I know, It’s a little mean to make the young ones open the doors to what is called ‘a True Stampede’, but at this point, it’s kind of tradition. All the employees hired after the previous years Black Friday are given the most important, yet terrifying opportunity to open the doors to the mob, and then are allowed to move on to filling in other positions should they choose to. There are a few that actually stay which, to me, is beyond human understanding, but hey, the job gets done. And I’d like to have my team to be satisfied, so whatever, as long as they’re happy, and our sales are consistent if not improving, we’ll be fine. Damn, they’re really pushing it out there, its so cold today and I see people in like workout clothes...I mean Black Friday Shopping is no joke for some people...I see, someone in sweatpants and a hoodie, and looking..grumpy? Well, that’s a first. I bet she was dragged by her best friend, maybe the girl next to her? She seems really prepared to literally shop till she drops….HOW IS SHE SO ENERGETIC AT 7:30 AM?! Her fanny pack seems full tho, either with snacks or cash...I hope its the former, its not safe carrying that much cash around. And is that….a water bottle??? That looks like it could hold over a litre of water….DAMN...she’s really prepared. I feel sorry for her grumpy friend though...I check my watch...1 minute left...alright, I wish everyone luck, and run and hide in my office….you’re crazy if you think I’m gonna stand out there, I mean I’m here to support my team and all, so I’m sure they can handle it….maybe. I check my watch, they should be opening the doors any second now. Right on cue! I hear screaming and check the security cameras, sure enough, in comes the crazed Black Friday Shoppers that had waited long enough for the doors to open.

Haven’t been on here in forever !

I’m back at uni now (20/09/19), I moved back last Friday and so far it’s been absolutely amazing. My room is the nicest ever I love it so much, my housemates are the best and everything is going so good so far !

Mom came down with me on the train on Friday, I got no sleep because we had to leave the house at half three in the morning to get a bus to town to get the 5:30 train. It was quite stressful because my railcard has expired and I didn’t realise so I had to buy a new one on the train and I felt really sick for some reason , but we saw an amazing sunrise and it was pretty fun to go with mom.

We had a great day, went for breakfast, did a grocery shop, walked round town, did my room ... it was so fun ! Mom paid for my first grocery shop which was really nice!

Other than that I’ve been out a few times for freshers, I’ve sort of been working on a basis of one night out, one night in. So I went out on Saturday night which was my first time in academi as I never went last year, and that was pretty fun I actually had a great time! Gen and I made friends with this group of gay guys who were really funny and cool, and one does geography and he gave me his number if I need help !! I also saw sash and Ollie from hockey and then this guy off my course who I have seen before but I hadn’t got a fuckin clue what he was called, I did ask his name but I didn’t hear it and I didn’t want to ask again hahaha. I danced with him and his mate for ages- he asked me where I was living about 5 times it was so funny, and he kept talking into my ear and I was just going along with it cause I couldn’t tell what he was on about Hahahha. He was cool though ! Then he went to the loo so I ran back outside to find Glenn cause my phone was dying, and then we went home I think. It was so sick! Then Monday was a messy one hahaha, I was more drunk than I’ve ever been and truly I don’t remember half of it. Like I wasn’t black out awful drunk but like I woke up and didn’t remember bits of the night. We stayed in the house and played card games and drinking games, then we went to BV for a round and some shots , then we went to rascals and I had this green drink and I don’t even know what it was cause I never buy my own drinks so I just take what Gina gives me hahaha (not like in a scabby way, I wouldn’t ever expect or even ask my friends to buy my drinks for me) so that was that.... then we went to academi and truly I do not remember being in academi at all. I remember leaving and I saw AJ from hockey and I didn’t remember this but he told me later that apparently I was just making Brooklyn 99 references hahahahaha oh my gosh that proper made me laugh when he told me that. Anyway I was crying really bad on the way home cause I really was missing Matt and I called him and he thought someone had done something to me so he was going to drive here yikes but it was ok I told him I was just sad and he stayed on the phone for ages while we wakes home. Gina wasn’t too drunk but joe was plastered unbelievably because he was quite sad cause his girlfriend cheated on him over summer and I think he’s still pretty upset about it. So he couldn’t even walk, turns out he didn’t even get into academi cause he couldn’t stand up, so he just came home with Gina and I. Gina went into the takeaway to get food which I don’t remember, and two people who I don’t know were holding joe up, but I just remember him lying on the pavement throwing up. It wasn’t good. And then I sort of ran off down the street cause I really needed a wee and I was talking to matt and Gina was yelling at me like a dog to stay put Hahahahah . Anyway we managed to get home- I throw up which I remember was VILE cause I’d just eaten chips (actually I had only eaten chips that day) and they basically came up whole . It felt absolutely vile. I did take all my makeup off though ! Joe slept in Gina’s bed and she slept on the floor. I woke up and I didn’t feel so bad, like I didn’t throw up or have a bad hangover or anything. Regardless, I am never doing that again. I know people always say that but I actually mean it 100%. Anyway I was supposed to have a hockey training session on Tuesday at 3:30 and as time was creeping on I started to feel a bit dodgy and I wasn’t sure whether to go cause I thought this is either gonna kill me off or make me feel loads better. I did go in the end and it made me feel better and I was totally fine afterwards so I was happy I went !!! It was so sunny as well, and I stupidly wore a thick long sleeved top . It was funny we were doing this drill and I kept hitting the ball into Lewis’ feet pretty hard so he was hobbling hahahaha and then he pulled a muscle so all in all it wasn’t great for him. Oh as well he’s best mates with patrick in my house which is sick cause I think Lewis is sound so if he’s round ours it’ll be cool :)

Tuesday was obviously a night in , which was needed and appreciated !

Wednesday was amazing .... Gina has gone to Llandudno with Sean all day so me, Glenn, joe, Michael, and Alex went to serendipity which is the student fair where you sign up to all the socs and clubs . We went at like 11 in the morning and it was such a good day ! We walked round and got fuck tons of free shit, I got a slice of pizza (although I gave it to Glenn as I don’t like pizza lol) a subway cookie and a load of subway vouchers, a canvas bag, a pen a wall calendar which I was sooooo happy about, a coaster, some post its, Morrison’s vouchers, free teabags, 4 booklets of spoons vouchers, a free smoothie, a free burger ... it was so good. I signed up to hockey obvs and ask mountain walking as mom wants me to do and I was going to go last year but it clashes with hockey a bit and I didn’t know anyone else. Turns out joe did it last year, and Michaels doing It this year so I’ll defo go !!! Then we went outside and played with the lacrosse stuff (Glenn does lacrosse) and we were just lobbing the balls at the goal, but they kept smacking the halls windows hahahaj, then there was a strip of Astro and a crazy catch for hockey and a couple of the lads were there like lyells, dyson, AJ etc so I was doing that do ages. It was sooooook much fun the sun was baking and I was wearing such a nice outfit and everything was sick !

All the hockey girls were asking if I’d go to social that night so I did end up going. I met holly and Maggs at BV and then we walked down to varsity with this old girl called Sam .

Social was actually ok ! I just had a pint of cider black currant which was ok and it was only 1.50 which was good cause I lit took 5£ with me out Hahahah. We played drinking games but they were the nicer ones they so it was fine. Then we went to harp for shots at 11:15 but I didn’t have one ‘cause hell no lol then we went i academi again, although it was absolutely dead in there. I danced for a bit then went outside and sat with Eleanor and the others outside for a bit. There was a really funny fight / argument where this girl was saying ‘I’m not wasting my time on you’ to this lad and then idk what next but she just yelled ‘your jackets from a charity shop!’ And it was so fucking funny cause he was so angry he was like ‘this jacket was £340’ loooooool .

Anyway I left a while after and just walked home cause I had a headache and my phone was on 6% so I just called Matt and went home, was so so lovely to have a relatively early nice still , I was in bed weeeellllll before 1am . Yum .

Then yesterday was sick too, it was the freshers hockey taster session . I wasn’t like ‘supposed’ to go but I went along anyway cause it was a peng day again and i has nothing better to do so I headed over. It was cool I just stood with Eleanor and AJ coaching and I joined in with some of the drills and Lydia and I passed it around a bit so it was really fun !!! Baking though!! Luckily I’d frozen a litre bottle of water the other day so I took that.

Joe and I made dinner together as Gina was at a law dinner, so we were just chatting and that, and then I was on FaceTime to Matt until like getting on for 1 . We were talking about how we’d treat our kids like in terms of differences between a boy and girl and we had a massive conversation about it all. Matts quite traditional because that’s his upbringing so he said he’d be more in line to be stricter on a daughter with going and stuff because of the risks, and I said my whole Spiel about I wouldn’t tell my daughter to put more clothes on to go out because that’s like saying it’s her fault or she’s asking for it when I don’t agree with that and that is be more likely to be stricter on my son with stuff like u know absolutely do not touch a girl without consent, don’t spike drinks, don’t harass girls etc so stuff that seems obvious but I feel like isn’t drilled into boys enough... so we had such a lib conversation and it turned into all the worldly social issues. I like those conversations because whilst often I do not agree with matts view it’s good to talk about it, and much as I’m not trying to always make him agree with me, i do like to try and get him to see things more radically and then understand where I’m coming from (because not being funny but i do truly think I’m right) and it does make me pleased when he shifts his stance slightly because he’s seen things from a different perspective - esp because I’m a girl and he isn’t . It was actually such a good thing to do, esp cause I am really passionate (if u will) about stuff like that. I almost with I’d recorded it to listen back lol .

Anyway we’re all going out today to acid lakes- should be amazing since the weathers good and everyone’s sound. Updates to follow xoxox

So Ramadan is coming up

With Ramadan approaching, I thought to make a little post about tips and tricks for getting through Ramadan for the ex Muslim. I should say that these tips and tricks don't work for everyone. You've gotta look at your own family and decide what's best for yourself. 1. Stockpiling. Basically just storing food in your room or your bag or whatever. Chocolate, biscuits, cake. Whatever you fancy and just hiding it away. Avoid things that make a lot of noise. Things that crackle or have loud packaging. So don't eat a big packet of crisps while your entire family is home. Store water too. You can buy a ton of water fairly cheaply. Here in the U.K. in Tescos or something you can get a 2 litre bottle of water for like 50p. 2. Saving up money. This is another great way to get through Ramadan. If you're at school or university or at work. Put some money aside so you can buy food. Grab yourself a sandwich or a drink. If you have maybe classmates or colleagues that are Muslim and can't know you're not one it's worth going out somewhere more secluded to eat. For me personally, there's a nice little park around the corner from my house. No one I know really goes down there so it's a nice place for me to eat if i need to. 3. Be a woman. I'm not one myself but apparently, if you're on your period you don't have to fast. So that can be a good way to get out of it. If your house is mostly men, we tend not to track your monthly cycles so you can extend it to a two week period but don't go overboard with it. Chances are your period will land during Ramadan anyway, if its at the start of the month try to avoid letting people its that time of the month. By that I mean be more discreet when throwing tampons or pads away 4. Fake an illness. We've all done this to get out of school. Everyone has. I've done it myself. It's not difficult to do and they might expect it too. You go from eating several meals a day to having just one big one. Your body is gonna take a bit of a hit. Especially with how dehydrated you can get. Plant the seed the day before and then the next day just stay in bed and groan to make out you're sick. 5. Drink tap water. Hydration is probably the biggest reason fasting during Ramadan is so difficult. You've gotta stay hydrated. If you can't stockpile water or buy it then drink tap water. It's clean and cold. It doesn't smell and there's no evidence if you drink it. Unlike juice or biscuits for example, you can smell it on your breath. You might have crumbs on your shirt, you might've had to throw the bottle away. So tap water is a great alternative. 6. Getting out of taraweh prayers. This is another area I guess being a woman can help. You're not obligated to pray taraweh at night. If you can get away with it, tell your parents that you'll read at home. And then sit in your room and go on tumblr. Like we all do when we pray anyway. If you are made to go to mosque, alone that is. Just don't go to mosque. Go for walks. Maybe see if a friend can come out to hang around with. Pretty much every year there will always be a group teenagers who go to mosque but don't pray. They just stand outside the mosque and smoke. I used to do that all the time. Even when I was Muslim. If your family go with you, it's a little difficult. It's worth using the size of your mosque to your advantage. If it's a big mosque with lots of people, you'll have a better chance of sneaking off, especially if you sit on the opposite end from your family. My dad usually goes with me to taraweh. The mosque we go to is big but there aren't many people there. Most leave after 8 rakats anyway. So what I do is, I make sure he sees me on the opposite end so he knows my whereabouts, and then leave after 2 or 6 rakats, since they read a dua after 4 it's not the best time to leave. Then you can sneak back in when they pray witr and bobs your uncle. Well not bob. Maybe Muhammad is your uncle. 7. Dealing with increased religiosity. This is another difficult thing about Ramadan in general. It turns the wannabe thug Muslims who smoke and drink and sleep around to become scholars. Everyone becomes more religious. It's the holiest month in Islam and honestly, the only way I can see avoiding that, is to either be at home for as little time as possible, and that's about it really. There's no other way to deal with it. You're just gonna have to grow thick skin and deal with it. Now the pressure might get to you and Ramadan is probably gonna be the month where you're most likely to tell people you're no longer Muslim, but don't take that risk. Just deal with it as best as you can. I should mention with some of these tips it all depends on your family. Not all of these work for me myself but they're just little things you can do. Also, try to do these things later on in the month rather than at the start. During the middle and end, people get more tired, they become a little less alert to certain things. Your parents might not care if you spend all day in your room.

I know obviously insurance for the young is gonna get rocket high anyway compared to older people for the same old 'statistical' reasons as always although I don't intentionally drive like an idiot or least intend never to and I do take safety as a big priority and everything, I've passed my test just over 2 years ago with a clean license but still find insurance even for my micra (1 litre 1994 M Reg) costing me a minimum average of 1000 annually, and just below a grand like 900-950ish is roughly the best I've got for my micra from directline but wondering if anyone would know anyone better cost wise?
