if you don’t know the historical significance, it was one of the earliest 3D models, made in 1975.

now it’s essentially the Windhelm Scream for computer graphics folks, hidden as easter eggs in shows like Toy Story and the Simpsons.

the meta of The Digital Circus is all about old computer graphics and programs. and Pomni and Gummigoo soaring through a field of Utah Teapots paired with the ethereal synth music gives me this sense of wonder and nostalgia that early computer games also invoked.

rewatching gravity falls for the first time since release—spotting so many small foreshadowing details i never noticed. stan screaming when he first saw the wax statue of himself, gideon exclusively calling stan “stanford,” the room that dipper and mabel fight over in the body swap episode clearly being fords, stan grabbing the glasses off the table and polishing them sadly. i know there’s probably more i missed, too. it’s such a good show.

One of my favorite fandom things (specifically as it pertains to Ao3 tags) is the concept of “No Beta We Die Like [insert-name-here]”.

I love that seemingly every fandom I brush up against has their own version— at LEAST one— so that the concept is the same across all of fandom but the tags are an ossified bit of culture and history decided seemingly by committee.

I talked about this a bit in my stream on Monday but I really like viktors cane as a prop. I think it’s a very strong example of a prop that is attached to a character that grows and evolves with the character as the story progresses. In season 1 part 1, we see it as a basic cane, that Viktor uses for some support but doesn’t completely rely on. Then, in part 2 as his illness progresses, the same cane has been modified to be a full crutch that can support more of his weight. Briefly in part 3 he is without it as he runs for the first time, but quickly once he resolves to destroy the hexcore it returns, and we see him holding onto it even when he’s sitting down. Then, in season 2 parts 1 & 2, the hexcore has changed the crutch into a shepherds crook. Viktor, despite possibly having stronger legs at this point, still uses it to walk. Personally I think the hexcore learned from the end of last season that the cane was a comfort to Viktor and adapted it on purpose for him to have and feel more steady in its mission, but I don’t have enough coherent thought right now to say more on that. And finally, even once the arcane has fully changed viktors physical form, he still has the same cane! It’s entirely physically different now, but much like him as a character, at its core it’s still the same prop that we started with at the beginning.

okay we know Bobby is a Good Leader because the show very implicitly lays that out but my favorite thing about Bobby?? He has a special and unique connection with each of the 118. He’s a good leader because he is able to create a dynamic relationship with everyone based on what they need from him

One of my favourite things about dark rise is that it never ever pulls it’s punches.

If something can get worse it will get worse every time, and I feel like that’s not something I usually see in YA books. Characters will have narrow escapes, they’ll make it out by the skin of their teeth, maybe with some losses along the way, but you know they’re getting through it, they’re the main characters after all. Except in dark rise there is literally never a single narrow escape and no one get out of a situation better off than they went in.

Will thinks of a way to avoid direct conflict between Simon and the Stewards? Too late Simon already invaded and everyone is dead.

Will realizes who he is? Oops Katherine overheard.

The gang needs to get out of the citadel before Crenshaw and his goons arrive? Well too bad, they’re already here and the party is split and everyone is suffering.

James comes and rescues Will from his own friends? Uh oh the collar is in place.

I feel like your average YA would have Will be clever enough to somehow evade these dangers and their consequences, and Will IS clever, it’s just that also life is hard and brutal and sometimes you won’t make it in time and you won’t be able to out manoeuvre your rich and powerful enemy.

No because isn’t it kinda crazy that the Culper Ring was only uncovered in 1929? 150 years, and everyone who knew it existed was dead. That’s how successful the ring was… how well hidden! All of that happened and we didn’t know until one hundred! and fifty years later!
