evil morty backstory - i rlly like that they just made him some random morty who rose above everything after getting sick of rick's abuse. it makes what he did feel even more earned and weighty. i think his motivation is a bit extreme still but i can't rlly blame him.

it's cool seeing infinity beyond the central finite curve. the jetsons inspired bit was v amusing bc i forgot about them lmao. but otherwise it seems absolutely wild west beyond the curve and i LIVE for that.

i also didnt imagine that we'd be seeing him again. i thought the way he left the show was perfect and if they brought him back it would just feel cheap but it DOESNT in this episode i love his appearance.

i rlly like seeing our morty be supportive of rick. he's literally trying everything to cheer him up and it's very important to me.

the prime decoys confuse me. like do they all share a consciousness? is prime just very very good at fucking with ppl that he's made all the decoys communicate w each other?

evil morty outsmarting rick is a great recurring theme in the episode. "filter for probability stasis" YEAH U TELL HIM LITTLE DUDE. we've never seen a morty like that EXCEPT for him and i think it's wonderful.

i didnt initially like the decoy trap thing being full of loads of other ricks. it made me feel like our rick wasn't very important to this dude and rick just made an enemy of a guy who didn't know he existed. BUT i don't stand by that anymore. the rest of the episode made me change my mind very quickly with.

the omega device. holy fuck this is the worst reveal to come out of this episode. she wasn't just killed, she was ERASED by prime in every reality. like she is GONE gone. that's why we've never seen her, save in flashbacks and memories. she's gone.

and i'm pretty sure it's our rick's fault that he did that. we see his beth and his diane be killed by a bomb, not wiped from reality like slo mobius is later in the episode. so his family was killed BEFORE all the shit with the omega device. ik correlation ≠ causation, but it rlly explains why our rick in particular is so hungry for revenge. if he was the one that made prime kill diane everywhere then he had to be the one to make prime pay for it.

i like how the multiple monitors seems to be prime's signature move. it happens here and in the s6 premiere.

and oh fuck the parallels. "when i invent something it works, it's called being talented" in story train vs "when i make a weapon in works."

oh man the diane head weapon thing. it's interesting that it was programmed to mock rick sexually, but even on our rick who knows it's a trap, it still affects him seeing her face again. "god i missed that face." and then the blank stare when she asks for a kiss. pretty sweet and fucked up.

rick and evil morty having to work together to get their portals working. the contrast between our morty freaking out and evil morty blank staring.

the bit with the portal closing too soon. i know it happened earlier this season and i think it's so funny lmao.

AND THEN the second incredible reveal of the episode: "Honestly, Wife Guy, I do miss when it was just us. The only two Ricks who actually invented portal travel." WHAT bestie prime bby girl u need to say that again. you guys were the ONLY ones who invented interdimensional travel, every rick's claim to fame. but no they just got the technology from prime who started a boys club of ricks who wanted to leave their lives behind that our rick refused.

but the reference to a time when they were closer, when it was only them - HELLO?? maybe i'm grasping at straws bc i want them to bang but holy shit.

the confirmation of the fan theory that rick based his AI voice on his wife. 10/10.

and then the fight scene. oh gods the fight scene. rick just screaming that he'll kill prime. prime regenerating constantly, looking unscathed as our rick becomes more and more dishevelled. it's too perfect i CANT. but otherwise they both seem pretty evenly matched w all the implants and stuff so without the regeneration i think rick would've had him. oh well.

rick like literally died during the fight.

the cool grandson/shitty grandpa exchange gives me breath. i LOVE how it's a morty that outsmarts prime. it's what he deserves.

prime still trying to be a smartass to evil morty, growing more and more panicked as it goes on bc he doesn't know what to do with the situation and control for once is not in his hands.

"what are u gonna 'aw geez' me to death?"

evil morty not even explaining his plan, just silently dragging in our rick and reviving him. saying "knock yourself out" with the intended double meaning. prime's almost scared expression as rick gets dragged in.

and then our rick has a choice. he can stop evil morty from keeping the weapon plans or he can kill prime. but that's a choice he made already. it's not even a decision. so his other enemy gets away.

the brutal brutal scene at the end when rick is just hitting prime. no tech, no implants, no gadgets. just fists. and rick beats him literally to a pulp as prime screams and laughs at him and taunts him further. it's meant to be sickening. it's meant to be personal. and it accomplishes that perfectly.

they don't even show prime's body in great detail. it's RIGHT in the background but we heard the sounds of the punches, we saw his nose break and his bloody teeth and haemorrhaging eyes and his brains coming out the side of it head and all we can make out is his fucked up swollen and broken face in the background as he sits still attached to the chair, a river of his blood pouring from the room.

but its not triumphant. they made rick's revenge hollow and bittersweet. its over but it destroyed rick in the process. who is he now that he isn't hunting prime? fucking no one.

then "look on down from the bridge" starts playing. we heard this in season 1 in rick potion #9 after morty had to bury a version of himself. he was struggling with the purpose of his life after switching universes. but he deals with it and overcomes it.

i think that scene is rick, for the first time in the entire show, struggling with his nihilistic philosophy. bc yes, he's shown to be an existentialist in the show (the difference being existentialists are "nothing matters but this matters to me" instead of "nothing matters so i don't have to do anything"). he had a drive. he had ppl he cared about. but now he's reached his goal he just feels empty and hollow. everything's meaningless and he's NOT okay with that. he never has been, but he has to grapple with that finally now he doesn't have a distraction. i don't think he can just bounce back and move past what happened.

ppl are saying this episode felt overstuffed and maybe it was but i'm very pleased with it and want to know where it's going.

i feel we still don't know the full story with prime. i'm predicting a flash back episode in the future explaining what the nature of their relationship was like before the bomb incident.

we also know that evil morty has this weapon that could destroy all ricks. so that is just a ticking bomb.

anyway i can't wait for angsty rick.

i actually watched unforgiven for this episode bc i'm a big fan of westerns anyway. the only real parallels i can see is they both have a group of three (two are already partners and the other one is the call to adventure) and an unsatisfying ending. bc that's the nature of westerns. they should NEVER end happily, and if u think so then ur wrong (/nsrs enjoy media how u want).

Whoa, a very loaded question anon! I'll do my best to answer going off of lcdp, and not whatever is happening in the spinoff asdasdf. In a nutshell, I think Berlin was not even close to as "innocent" as he insisted he was, but also not the level of evil he presented himself as either. He lives in his own dream world with barely any self-awareness, but he did it on purpose because under that facade is a broken man who knows his life/personality/circumstance were never as rosy as he believed. He's extremely selfish and egotistic, but also stupidly selfless when it counts- that was what was "cool" about the character, he had his own code of ethics that followed nobody's morals but his own. Undoubtedly a bad guy, but bad with layers and smidgens of good.

I do think he killed multiple people LOL. As random murder (Ex. dude in the bathroom), fits of rage, punishment, and as self-defense. But it never weighs on his conscience because he feels justified in everything he does. Even when he's not justified, he'll find a way to justify it.

As for the last questions, hmmm I personally don't think he ever raped anyone in the past (coercion or otherwise) judging by that code of conduct he was so proud of and how "betrayed" he seemed when Nairobi told him how Ariadna truly felt. He was so humiliated and pissed off by hearing that, that I think it was the script's way of showing us Ariadna was the exception, not the norm. This was the first time a woman he wanted didn't want him but "lied" to him about wanting him anyway, so it doubled as a blow to his aesthetic conscience and ego. (these are my thoughts about what the show was going for- as a viewer, I have qualms about Pina's execution but I definitely believe Ariadna was 100% the victim here)

And technically, Andres was raped in the past. If we go by his French teacher story, he was an 18yo student at the time his 30-40something teacher had sex with him, repeatedly presumably. To most of us, that would definitely constitute rape even if he he believes it was consensual. As for my personal thoughts, I think it's entirely possible that he himself could have been a rape victim. @fetttdjarin once told me that Andres' aggression towards that poor dude in the bathroom is reminiscent of what someone who'd suffered sexual abuse might do to lash out. Plus, there was definitely some underlying trauma that caused him to become the narcissist/hedonist he is today. People aren't born like that.

Today on BnHA: Horikoshi is all “so I have this speech planned out, and it’s really good, but it also only really needs about 6 to 8 pages, but I’m gonna see if I can stretch it out to 17 pages so I can kill time before we get to the next volume cliffhanger two weeks from now.” Anyway but it really is a good speech though. There are feels, and tears, and more talk about how Deku is so in need of a shower that just looking at him requires a tetanus booster, and more feels, and more tears, and bonus ship drama, and an iconic callback to the very first chapter which reframes the entire series in a new context in a totally epic and moving way, and it’s all very good. Except that Horikoshi is determined to never let anyone actually give this kid a hug. Who hurt you, dude.

so page 2 is just continuing the whole happy/worried faces monologue, which of course is very important to Ochako’s character as it provides the context for why “who protects the heroes” ended up becoming her thing. and this is making me think we actually are in for a whole second chapter of this sob. when will my boy finally get to rest

I was going back and binging Ochako chapters this past week for reasons, and I gotta say it really stuck out to me just how often these two are paired with each other. they do everything together. it’s a really sweet friendship that often goes unappreciated but it’s very cute

I’ve said this before, but this new generation of heroes is shaping up to be much more transparent than the All Might generation. they’re basically abandoning the almighty, untouchable Superman “heroes as gods” concept in favor of the more nuanced “heroes as people” concept instead. and that’s a good thing. seeing their heroes as humans, with human limitations and weaknesses and flaws, will hopefully not only lead to more scrutiny and accountability, but also more awareness of how hard some of them are working and how much they’re sacrificing. that’s something All Might never quite grasped back at the start of the series -- that the weak, vulnerable, injured him could be just as inspiring as the mighty, invincible him -- perhaps even more so. there’s a power in seeing otherwise ordinary people show extraordinary bravery and compassion. it inspires others to try and do the same

Alright, so here’s the thing. At this point, I actually don’t care what Artagan has or hasn’t done and, morally, what that means. It’s irrelevant. Interesting, but irrelevant. What I want to talk about is what the Nein, excluding Jester, know about him, and what they do with this information, and how they cast judgment.

Here are things that the nein have actually seen: fleeting glimpses of a figure in a green cloak. one conversation with a giant archfey who has recruited jester’s help in planning a convention. further, fleeting glimpses. very very brief phrases.

Here are things that the nein have heard about him from jester: he’s pretty cool, you guys :) . he’s got a chaotic streak, like her. he helps her pull off pranks. he’s always shown up for her. he’s handsome. he taught her magic. he kept her company when her mom was busy. he is her first friend. he is her best friend. he is her oldest friend. she really loves him.

and yes, they know he misrepresented himself to jester for years. they know he sent them to an island where you lose your memory every night. they know that he is sketchy as fuck and they do not know if he means what he says. and that is reasonable and understandable and fair.

here is something that i don’t know if you guys know about abusers, regardless of if artagan is one or not. (and he’s not. i’m not even going to say i don’t think he is, he literally is not abusive. words mean something; stop throwing them around because you personally don’t like someone.) you cannot tell their victims that they are abusive or awful or manipulative or horrible, and expect that to help. that makes it worse. the same is true of cults. you cannot, and i mean CANNOT, make yourself hostile, because then the outside world is hostile, and the abuser is safe. the outside world is hostile, and the cult is safe. furthermore you’re reinforcing what every abuser and what every cult plants in their victim’s heads--i’m the only one who would put up with you. i’m the only one who really loves you. everyone else will be cruel to me, but i’m the only thing you have. even if the nein had reason to suspect that the traveler was straight up abusing jester instead of just weird and shady, that is not a good response.

no matter how bad artagan is or isn’t, fjord, caduceus, and beau are still being condescending. they are still failing to trust that jester knows what she’s talking about. they are still trying to coddle her, they are still treating her like a child, and i want to talk about that. i want y’all to see that they’re still treating her like she’s emotionally fragile. like individually, i want to talk about that, and also the fact that everyone seems to want to lump caleb into this. (and yasha?? yasha has barely said anything about him, y’all.)

i’m going to skim over caduceus a bit because i don’t think his is a jester-centric problem. he tends to just trust that he either has the correct answers to a situation, or that even if he doesn’t know what’s correct, he knows what isn’t. this arc has been very interesting, because it’s been a lot of “i’ll play along with this because it sounds intriguing, but i’m going to be very self righteous about it the whole time.” like. the “we’re good” when jester brought up transferring followers to melora is haunting me. why “we’re good”? i get cad’s philosophy that not everyone is going to flock to one god--that’s fine, that makes sense. but the implication of “we’re good” really makes it sound like “mmm no thanks, none of these people would end up in my cool and correct religion anyway.” because he doesn’t know! he doesn’t know if any of these people would actually be happier and better off with melora. or. maybe he does know, or has decided, that they wouldn’t be, because these are not the kind of people that he could see himself falling under the same moral umbrella as. (lmao love how i said i was going to skim. anyway. again, less a jester thing, more a “cad is smug about everything” thing tbh.)

let’s move to fjord. he is quite honestly making me almost more uncomfortable than beau, because he’s making statements that i don’t really actually believe. “we just don’t want you to get hurt” is all very well and good. coupling that with agreeing with beau that they shouldn’t leave jester alone with artagan? without telling jester? does not jive. (i’m still not over the ridiculous of that, by the way. yeah this dude--no, this ARCHFEY, who could snap you in half in a moment--has been alone with her regularly for the first 20ish years of her life but now, now he’s going to try and kill her, and you’re going to be the one to stop that.) fjord keeps saying things like this--that he trusts her--but he doesn’t actually act like it. at one point he even says “if jester has faith in the traveler, that’s good enough for me, i suppose.” but it’s not, and he doesn’t act like it is. you know who actually acts like that? caleb. caleb’s getting his own paragraph though this is getting long as fuck. but if fjord actually meant that? he would’ve told beau “listen i know this situation is sketchy and i don’t like him anymore than you do but because i trust jester i also trust that she knows what she’s doing here, and i’ll be there to back her up with whatever she needs/wants me to do”. but he did not say that or anything like that. instead he agreed with beau to essentially be bodyguarding jester--without consulting jester about it at all. he wouldn’t have told jester “he’s generally full of shit, right?” about the traveler. jester is continually telling the group over and over again that she knows what he’s like. she knows Exactly how he can be. and the sad thing is, if fjord actually believed that she knew what she was talking about when she said that and if he believed that he could actually talk to her frankly and not that her feelings had to be protected at all costs (my skin is still crawling at “we don’t wanna ruin jester’s special day”. it’s not a five year old’s birthday party), then he would have straight up told her. he would have said “hey we’re concerned enough that he’s going to hurt you that we don’t think you should be alone with him. can we help guard against that?”

and i’ll be honest, i’ve kind of been squicked out by all the romantic posts about fjord and jester because he’s spent the last few episodes genuinely treating her like a wonderful but vulnerable child who needs to be protected from the world. when he told beau "I'm probably the least clued in as to how jester feels” i was like YEAH NO SHIT. and i know he meant it in a romantic sense but i feel that it’s true in general. like i get that he’s scared to talk to her. that’s fine. he doesn’t have to talk to her about her feelings, romantic or otherwise. but if he’s acknowledging that he does not at all know how she feels then he has no right to behave as if he does know. and again i don’t mean this in a romantic sense. i mean it in a, he is making the assumption that she can’t handle reasoned criticism of the traveler to her face, kind of sense. he and beau both are opting for “random insults, threats, and judgments they have decided apply” over “genuinely this is why we are concerned”. there has been a lot of “you don’t need him” and “you are better off without him” and “you’re better than him” and “you have us why do you need that” and those are judgement statements that are essentially meaningless. all they do is further demonstrate to jester that they don’t actually understand why she’s upset or what she actually wants.

i think caleb, mr i-eat-encyclopedias-for-breakfast, likely just has a better intellectual understanding of the fae and that may be why he’s not as outwardly concerned as the rest, but he’s also actually decided to trust jester that she knows what she’s dealing with. she has demonstrated both verbally and with her actions that even if she may not have known about artagan initially, She Knows How This Works. and he trusts that. caleb truly went “alright, i trust that you know what you’re doing, where do you need me” and that was IT. i’m not saying that he’s not allowed to be suspicious or concerned or wary of the traveler: i just don’t think he is. and i hate that people keep lumping him in with the rest of the nein “treating jester like a child” because they think he’s predatory or something--especially as caleb and fjord are pretty much the same age--when he is literally the only FUCKING person consistently asking jester how she feels and then actually acting accordingly.

and the thing is, you don’t have to be caleb and largely unconcerned, it is actually possible for you to show concern and alarm and wariness for your friend’s best friend without condescending to them and veth has been doing that this whole damn time. we know how she feels about him; she decidedly does not like him. but she set that aside to really fully listen to jester and then tried to be helpful to her in deciding what to do next, without inserting her own opinion. veth is the only one acknowledging that, sure, this looks really bad and i don’t like that guy, but you know him best, jester, and you know yourself best and so it should be your choice what to do in this situation. she reminds jester--if he is really a friend to you, and he is doing things you don’t like, then you can talk to him about that and he should listen. i want to talk about how when jester suggested that artagan join the mighty nein, there were exactly three reactions. extremely lame excuses from everyone but caleb and veth, “maybe, like, an annex--” from caleb, because he knows what everyone else is gonna say, and “we don’t like your friend” from veth, literally the only person who has apparently decided that jester can hear that without dissolving into a puddle or something.

and i want to make it clear--i don’t hate the actors. and stories are supposed to make you upset and uncomfortable, to an extent. they’re supposed to make you think. you’re not supposed to be happy when darth vader blows up alderaan. you’re not supposed to be happy when edmund betrays his siblings to the white witch. these are all excellent, excellent character choices and i applaud the cast for making them. and i don’t hate fjorester. and like yeah there have been a lot of cute moments in the last few eps. and they are cute and their story is compelling and it’s interesting. but i wish people would stop acting like fjord’s attitude towards her is perfect and lovely and that he trusts her sooo much when he is going behind her back like this. i am...the biggest widomauk shipper. and i have to admit my heart does the swoopy thing every time i rewatch the forehead kiss. but that wasn’t great. it was overall really not a good read or handle of the situation. it was, there was an attempt. and i do think fjord is trying. and i think beau is trying too. and i think all of their attitudes however terrible just come from a place of loving her and wanting to protect her. but--and here i must point frantically back at artagan--loving someone does not mean that you’re not hurting them.

My Top 10 Favourite Sonic Characters wooo!

Here’s a post that’s existed in my mind for centuries and my inconsistent ass motivation to write things at all hasn’t let me actually write until just this moment. My favourite characters from a series I’ve been into for pretty much my entire life, ranked as well. Obviously subjective because objectivity is fake, definitely subject to change I’d say since on some random days I’ll just be really into a character I may otherwise not think about that often, all that fun stuff. You know, it’s a top 10 list, it’s for fun, yeah. Let’s.

10. E-123 Omega

Definitely will say this number 10 spot is probably the most volatile on the list, and there are like 4 other characters that could be in this position if idk the stars were aligned a little differently. But hey, Omega’s really cool! Certainly one of my favourite robot designs in the series, Omega’s built like the powerhouse he’s supposed to be and has a super nice colour scheme, I like that there’s not as much white on him as prior E-Series models, creates a sense of finality appropriate for who Omega is. Also a fan of his personality – he’s a pretty simple character across all the mediums he’s appeared in,  largely defined by a drive to prove himself to be the best thing Eggman’s ever created by way of… destroying everything else he’s ever made lmao. Lots of funny dialogue derived from that, and while I’m not into his “haha meatbags” shtick from the comics and such they still let him have fun gags, destroying the barrel of doom comes to mind. I also think what makes Omega particularly fascinating is his unexpected compassion? “The original must exist somewhere” line in Heroes and his general bond with Team Dark through 06 and stuff really give what would otherwise be just a robotic killing machine quite a lot of depth. Even with how volatile this number 10 spot is Omega still feels like an easy pick for this list.

9. Vector the Crocodile

Fearless leader of the Chaotix Detective Agency, accomplished singer, zero-income loser with a heart so gold he can’t even take payments for the jobs he does, and of course, a seasoned milf hunter – Vector’s certainly multifaceted by some definition. Nah but for real I love this dude, he manages to both be always off in his own little world with his crappy singing and listening to his amazing theme song, trying to run a successful detective agency but being too kind-hearted to actually take money, while also being surprisingly level headed and perceptive. Espio and Charmy are too serious and childish respectively for their own good, but Vector manages to keep them together. Maybe the permanently bankrupt Chaotix seem comically incompetent, but Vector may as well have solved every case he’s come across. And fuck SEGA like this guy enough to put him in teams he doesn’t even belong in in Free Riders and Team Sonic Racing, as well as somehow even getting into Boom – so he’s surprisingly well travelled and has more character interactions than most, which I think is a little weird but pretty cool tbh! At the end of the day Vector’s still a pretty simple character but he’s got a lot of charm and personality, and he is also a crocodile. That’s awesome. Love him for it.

8. Blaze the Cat

Sonic cats are funny we literally only have 2 of them and they’ve got the most dimorphic designs of any species we’ve had lol. But yeah Blaze is fucking badass, fast as fuck pyrokinetic princess of another dimension and even has access to her own unique Super form? That’s fucking hype dude. Her playable appearances actually do take advantage of what makes her distinctive as well which you really love to see. In being a female character Blaze also has the benefit of quite a lot of designs across the various spinoffs and shit, which hey we love to see. Her character arc’s quite a simple one, and the execution is arguably not great since Rush is pure text boxes and everyone telling Blaze to lighten up – but the archetype of cold-hearted person learns to open up and trust others is always gonna be a nice one, and Blaze is no exception. Further titles and comic stories and stuff would further this arc by letting Blaze learn to have fun and giving her an even wider group of people to bounce off of. Mostly Silver. Hey at least their designs go nicely together. But yeah Blaze is dope as shit, nothing not to love about her. Was actually my main in Team Sonic Racing too lol.

7. Silver the Hedgehog

Speaking of, here’s Silver! You know in another post I talked about this element of tragedy regarding how popular SEGA clearly wanted Silver to be vs the actual result, largely informed by 06 just not being so great. But I’m glad that Silver stuck around all the same, because for as much as people might argue about how much sense it makes for him to be constantly travelling back and forth in time or whatever, I still think the character himself is a good one. Awkward and naïve to a fault due to the whole “grew up in an apocalypse” thing, yet driven by nothing more than simple hope, and the determination to do what’s best for everyone – definitely a combination of traits that make for a fun character to just witness and have stories be told with. I’m enough of a magical girl fan to think characters who want to believe in hope more than anything are based as hell, so Silver gets extra props from me for that. Also think his design is pretty fucking cool, even if it’s maybe a bit overdesigned compared to what the series started with. And hey psychokinesis? Yeah they’ve never made it play well but holy shit they still manage to make it cool as hell, even just his flying zoom throughout the city in his first cutscene in 06 is dope, and the Generations boss fight is one of the best in the series – I’d say perhaps the single best rival battle? Don’t quote me on that. Also. Ah. I like his voice. Specifically Pete Capella. I don’t care if it sounds pubetic or whatever it’s how Silver sounds to me and I like it. Quinton Flynn also a good Silver tbf. Not into Bryce Papenbrook Silver whatsoever but hey. Fan of Silver, basically.

6. Doctor Eggman

It feels downright bad to have the series’ main and best antagonist this low down, but it is what it is - there are just a few characters I like more. But let’s not understate Eggman here – he’s one of the biggest baddies in video games for a reason. That this selfish narcissistic man-child is a genius with an IQ of 300 capable of inventing fully autonomous intelligent robots that give Sonic the fucking Hedgehog a run for his money, or being able to create entire airship armadas out of basically thin air – it’s impressive as shit. This funny old egg guy awakens ancient deities and literal gods of destruction just for the hell of it. And he’s increasingly getting way better at properly controlling them too – Generations sees Eggman in control of a being that’s able to rip through space-time. His own inventions aren’t anything to scoff at either – the likes of the Egg Carrier, Egg Fleet, Metal Sonic or the Death Egg would make his whole planetary conquest goal a walk in the park if not for all the spiny little pincushions running around. But Eggman doesn’t give up either – he’s utterly determined to get what he wants and will stop at nothing to accomplish it. Fucking love it. Both complimentary to and perfectly antithetical to everything Sonic represents and stands for – a perfect villain. I think what makes Eggman even better is that he is technically just an ordinary human guy – he’s surprisingly strong physically and obviously ridiculously intelligent, but he’s still not really anything special. And yet the man controls gods and builds machines that surpass gods. Not bad for a giant talking egg.

5. Tails the Fox

I don’t know quite what changed between childhood and uh, not that, but Tails actually used to be my favourite character. Which is weird – I am a little brother but in terms of playing Sonic games in multiplayer I was the big brother to my own little brother. I got to be Sonic and he got to be Tails because he was younger than me so he’s a cucklord that doesn’t get to have fun. And yet I preferred Tails anyway. Maybe I just generally related to him still - he’s the kid that wants to be cool like his hero he’s always chasing around. And he’s also smart as hell. Just like child Josh fr. But yeah being in 5th place he’s obviously not held quite as strongly in my mind, but I still like Tails a lot. He’s got a really cute design and at his best offers a lot to the team while still being loveably humble in a series where everyone else is constantly hyping themselves up. And that classic arc of learning to have more confidence in himself and faith in his own abilities, we love it for a reason yo. There’s not necessarily much to Tails ever, came from a simpler time in the franchise’s history and despite being probably the 3rd most recurring character in the series beside Sonic himself and Eggman he does largely just play support roles – but he’s been in the franchise through thick and thin for a reason. Love this guy. Here’s to stronger characterisation in future titles and getting a real fucking variant in Speed Battle and Dash and such.

4. Knuckles the Echidna

We’re definitely getting to the point where spots are extremely competitive – again on a different day Knuckles might’ve been in a different position entirely. But that different day is not today, and today, Knuckles is right here. Sonic’s first rival and a franchise mainstay for a reason – Knuckles is just fuckin cool as shit, you know? As strong as Sonic is fast for however much sense that makes and a vibrant red to contrast Sonic’s blue, he definitely serves as one of Sonic’s best rivals while being a strong and unique character in his own right. Particularly a fan of his characterisation around the Adventure era, where we had a Knuckles with a generally cool head who was still easily agitated. Able to make the call to smash the Master Emerald so Eggman doesn’t get it, but also afraid of ghosts – multifaceted guy really. His characterisation in this era was helped by having perhaps my favourite voice for the character as well. The best Knuckles likes to banter too – OVA and Heroes Knuckles have quite a playful rivalry dynamic with Sonic, but are still proud to call him their best friend – it’s fun. The OVA also has Knuckles’ hat and, yes. Wanna give shoutouts to the movie version of Knuckles for being the best portrayal of him we’ve seen in years and giving him a genuinely good character arc. Knuckles in general often has some nice arcs – even as far back as his literal debut game with 3&K we see him shift from antagonist to hero basically instantly, because despite his upbringing leaving him socially withdrawn and consequently a little naïve and gullible, Knuckles is someone that’s able to assess a situation really well and adapt accordingly. Eggman’s taking the Master Emerald now? Well shit, Knuckles has already realised what’s going on and is immediately ready to both apologise to Sonic and Tails and help them out with what they’re doing. I like that a lot – he’s not caught up in the lie or spending time brooding over it, he realises what needs done and gets on it. Very strong start for the character. Knuckles is also really good in the Riders games of all things – where they really take advantage of his treasure hunter knowledge and shit, being able to decipher ancient texts. We’re all a bit tired of haha Knuckles is an idiot so looking back on these earlier titles where he really does offer a lot to the team is awesome. On treasure hunting by the way, his Treasure Hunting variant in Speed Battle and Dash and such is dope as hell. Hoping for a good playable Knuckles again one day.

3. Shadow the Hedgehog

I realise as we get closer to the end of this list that anyone doing process of elimination might be wondering who else is left. Sonic himself presumably, but Shadow’s only number 3. Wonder what the other spot will go to. Well, we’ll get to it when we get to it. For now, Shadow. The second most popular character in the series, arguably Sonic’s greatest rival character yet, the only character in the modern era to even get his own game, and even getting a starring role in the eventual third Sonic movie. People love Shadow dude, and not without good reason. He’s got one of the most well realised and fleshed out arcs in the series – and certainly the most detailed backstory, ups and downs included. But hey, in spite of some hmmm portrayals here and there (but who isn’t this true for) Shadow at his best still really resonates with a lot of people, myself included. He’s calm, cool and collected, but still with a bit of a competitive streak, and able to hype himself up here and there despite his otherwise humble disposition. He fits in with the rest of the cast but stands out at the same time. I particularly think David Humphrey’s Shadow in SA2 is really well done – we get a Shadow that’s more softspoken than the rest of the cast, who has the right amount of melancholy when he needs to sound sad and the right amount of confidence and pride when he’s being more confrontational. It’s a surprisingly good voice performance for SA2 in particular given the game’s infamous voice directing. And, you know. I’m just a human being. Normal like anyone else. So when Shadow says “If the world chooses to become my enemy, I will fight like I always have” I just find that badass as shit dude, completely unironically. No irony, no haha edgy hot topic, no general cynicism in terms of loving what I love – Shadow is just sincerely a cool as shit character. Really excited to see what the future has in store for him, movie 3 especially.  

2. Mighty the Armadillo

Yeah okay here’s our surprise pick lol. Unless you like know about my retired Sonic blog I suppose. I don’t even have half the justification to have Mighty this high as I do any of the other characters. We’ve got very little to go off of in terms of his personality in the games – he’s basically just a nice, peace loving pacifistic guy, yet one who’s very strong anyway because what’s a Sonic character without some random superpower? And that’s about it! Even if you go to the comics or something Mighty’s not really any different from that basic character description but just slightly more detailed, and also with a sister in preboot Archie. What really made me pay attention to Mighty though is the real life history behind the character. A few of the early characters made for Sonic 1 before it was Sonic 1 would get repurposed into something new and unique – Eggman came from a Roosevelt lookalike in pyjamas, the game Ristar was built off of the Feel the Rabbit concept, Vector was gonna be a in a band in Sonic 1 before getting scrapped and brought back 4 years later for Chaotix, that sort of thing. One of these early concepts was an armadillo character that could roll into a ball, and it’s not really a stretch to assume that this eventually turned into Mighty. Mighty makes his playable debut in an arcade game very few people have played because emulating track balls is hard, and then a few years later makes his second appearance as basically a sprite swap of Sonic in Knuckles’ Chaotix. And that was just it for over 20 years. Mighty was just gone. This dope character design and fun if a little simplistic personality just didn’t exist in the games for over 2 decades. We’ve even since learned that he was planned to be included in Heroes and just didn’t make the cut. We could’ve had a modern Mighty design where he has an actual voice actor and shit and we just don’t. And that just made me sad, and yet got me weirdly invested in the character and wanting to see him return. Even had #BringBackMighty as a blog title for a while lol. You can imagine I lost my mind when he was announced for Mania Plus, and would even be appearing in Mania Adventures as well. My boy looks better than ever and he’s playable in my favourite game of all time. Fucking awesome. There’s not much more to it, really. Writing wise he’s one of the more basic in the series yeah, but that real life history got me randomly obsessed all the same. I kind of hope we do away with the “Mighty is a classic character only” thing that SEGA has going on, but even if we don’t reach that point I’m happy to see that he’s a part of the cast in some way again.

1. Sonic the Hedgehog

Yeah here’s a predictable outcome. But can you blame me? SEGA made one of the best character designs of all time, put him in a series that’s still going 31 years strong with an enormous fanbase despite all the ups and downs, and made that character completely sincerely cool as all hell. Sonic’s a genuine inspiration, always living life to the fullest, playing by his own rules and following his own heart, while capable of being a hero and always looking to help others live their lives with the same freedom he adores himself. He’s cocky, but never by putting other people down. He always speaks his mind, but he’s considerate of others. He treats everyone fairly, but if you don’t do the same he’ll take you down. Nobody stands up against oppression and cruel treatment of others quite like Sonic does. And certainly nobody manages to do so while being as cool as Sonic is blue. I genuinely love this character and what he’s represented to me throughout my life. I don’t think I could even process the impact he’s had on my life – Sonic 1 was the first game I ever played and that was probably like 20 years ago, bearing in mind I’m not even 22 yet. This series and Sonic the character have quite literally always been with me. I don’t even know where else to take this paragraph, I just think Sonic’s awesome as shit. No other character could possibly be my favourite.

And yeah that’s it! I think. I mean it is definitely “it” in that it’s my top 10 favourite Sonic characters anyway. I’m just writing this part with less consideration for “writing well” and instead just spitting out whatever words enter my mind. Actually ended up nearly fully rewriting the top 4 characters because I didn’t like what I’d came up with at 2 in the morning, and I’m happy I did because I feel a lot better about what’s there now versus what was there before. Sonic is fun. Sonic characters are fun. Hopefully you had fun reading this. Hopefully my friends have fun reading this also. ◊ Neither of you know which between the two of you is more dramatic.

◊ Your dramatic personalities often intertwined, merging the two of you and making you both into one huge drama queen.

◊ He is always extremely proud and amazed at your ability to sing, dance and act so well all at the same time.

◊ He believes you don’t get enough credit for doing what you do, so he makes sure you know how proud he is of you.

◊ He sometimes quotes Shakespeare or some other dark musical while you two hung out, it was kinda cute seeing him geek out like that.

Gundham quoted, pride laced in his words as he was proud of remembering that. “Gundham... it’s literally 5 am in the morning, the party starts at 12 pm. ◊ You’d do extra good knowing that Gonta was in the crowd watching you, wanting to give him the best first experience with musicals.

◊ He’d applaud at the end of every scene, trying to show his support the best he can.

◊ for his first play he watches, he ends up clapping a bit too early.

◊ he cheered and applauded super loud when he saw you on stage, but stopped when he realized everyone was staring at him.

◊ Though it was a bit embarrassing for both you and him, you felt your heart flutter at how his first instinct was to clap for you when you walked in stage.

◊ You’d introduce him to various musicals, beauty and the beast being his favourite.

◊ He definitely starts to obsess over the more ‘gentlemanly’ characters.

◊ his first impressions of the beast were bad; Denying that old lady shelter? How ungentlemanly!!

◊ but as he kept watching, he could see the beast wasn’t too bad. 

◊ The beast had some flaws, but he obviously cared for belle, he thought.

◊ Oh but he hated Gaston, he really really hated him.

◊ If you acted with someone who played Gaston(and you as belle), he would have to hold back and not rip his face off every time Gaston said something idiotic or sexist.

◊ He had to keep reminding himself that, that Gaston wasn’t real(and thank god for that, real gaston would’ve been torn to shreds.)

◊ the dancing scene was his favourite part for sure.

◊ He’s sad he doesn’t get to play beast with you, but he still enjoys the scene nonetheless.

Byakuya Togami

◊ In all honesty, he thinks your ultimate isn’t all that great.

◊ But as he watches one of your plays, his mind ultimately(see what i did there?) changes.

◊ He becomes impressed and dazzled from how passionate you look when you act, not noticing how you had him sitting on the edge of his seat.

◊ After watching you act, he literally cannot watch another play unless you are in it, finding it unworthy of his time and money.

◊^^this is before you two got together,

◊ you two got together after you found him in your crowd, applauding like the rest of them with the same bewildered expression on his face.

◊ You confronted him and he attempted to compliment your acting, but he accidentally let his feelings for you slip out instead, “I find you truly captivating- Wait no, I-I meant your plays. Your plays, they are truly captivating.” You watched in amusement as he stumbled with his words, eventually interrupting him with an, “Are you available right now?”

◊ So yeah, eventually you two get together, and good for Togami! Because now he doesn’t have to secretly applaud you as a fan, he can applaud you whenever and as your lover.

◊ After shows, he’d give you a single rose as a congrats or applause (so romantic!)

◊ If you ever decided to be chaotic and start belting out lyrics, he would just sigh and let you finish.

◊ Very rarely, you would catch him humming a small tune of a musical song you sang.

◊ But very very rarely. If you ever catch him and confront him about it, he will deny it completely.

◊ I think he’d probably like the more serious plays, he enjoys the meanings and emotions of them more than the sillier and playful ones.

◊ If he ever watched Mean Girls, he would start to slightly mimic Regina George.

◊ “Byakuya wha-” “Get in peasant, we’re going shopping.” 

◊ It’d be lowkey hot when you hear him sass you like Regina George tho-

◊ He’d have more big dick energy after watching Mean Girls, emitting his dominance to everyone.

◊ Makoto during a class trial: “So we know that she was at the scene of the crime, right?” “Shut up.” Byakuya flipped his imaginary long hair as Makoto stares at him in confusion, silence filling the room. “Shut up!” “I didn’t even say anything-”

◊ “The new motive is going to be-!” “Whatever, I’m getting cheese fries a book.” Byakuya sighed, turning on his heels and catwalking away.

◊ Would go to every one of your shows.

The Boyz college au

because i’m the worst and have spurts of radio silence when i want to be writing my aus but in my defense it is my last week of school for the semester and i’ve been working on getting my associate’s degree :))))))

but anyway uhhh yeah this isn’t ateez i know but i’m still thinking about the be your own king video the boyz released out of literal NOWHERE and i felt inspired today in the middle of doing homework and wanted to provide you with something i hope no one’s done this so i can be original but i wouldn’t hold me breath

Hyunjae 

he’s on the swim team and really into animation, but his major is undeclared. he’s constantly being hounded about needing to decide on a major, but he really just doesn’t care enough. yes he cares about his education (as can be seen by his top notch grades), he just doesn’t know what he wants to do and doesn’t see a problem in that. but he’s into a lot of different clubs besides his swim team, like the art club he frequents with juyeon every week. hyunjae also played a cyborg in one of kevin’s short films, and because of that he’s known as ‘the arm guy’ to a lot of people around campus. everyone else knows him as the star swimmer who’s always at the pool

Juyeon 

he’s an art major, his favorite medium being paint. he’s also really interested in modeling, so he will help out some photography and other art students if they need someone. most people go to him first though because he’s just so beautiful and fits so many different aesthetics and is overall just such a natural at this stuff like wow. he loves making messes for his art projects because it shows that messy can be good sometimes, and it shows he has fun! his social media is mostly pictures of his artwork, but the pictures of him are the most popular and always get the most comments

Q/Changmin 

dance dance dance my guy, he’s a dance major on the dance team who competes in underground dance competitions. his major deals mostly with classical training like ballet and modern dance while the dance team does a lot of hiphop and theatrical dancing, and he mostly freestyles for his competitions. and in case you’re wondering, yes he always wins. honestly though he dances everywhere because it’s what he loves to do, and he loves theatrics and putting on a show. people will find him in really random places around campus practicing or recording covers or even just freestyling because he can

Haknyeon 

he’s a theater major. he likes musical theater and all but his favorites are classic plays. he especially loves shakespeare and has starred in nearly every production of his that the university has put on. he’s just really good at portraying romance and tragedy and even the comedies and it shows. it’s partly because he just loves romance dude what a dweeb so he really puts his whole heart in those performances. he’s always trying to get kevin to make a short film about a reimagined shakespeare story but he has yet to listen to him

Kevin 

he’s a film major with a minor in creative writing. really the guy just wants to write and direct his own movie because how much fun would that be! he stars in a lot of his student short films because a lot of his friends would rather die than do that, but it’s okay because kevin still has fun!! def the type to make iconic indie films by accident when he’s through with college. his favorite genre is fantasy because he loves being transported to far off places, and if he’s able to transport other’s to a place he created? that’s the dream

Sunwoo 

majors in music despite a bunch of people telling him it’s not realistic and a bunch of “you won’t be able to get a solid job if you major in something like that” bullshit, and because of this he has to put himself through college because no one’s really helping him out. it’s hard but sunwoo works part time at a car wash place and a roller rink guess which he likes more. but he knows how to vibe and is able to make his work fun, and it’s very apparent to those around him. people are always asking for the cute one that dances while he works

Sangyeon 

everyone expects him to be the most responsible with his schooling, getting a degree in something professional like business and joining a bunch of leadership and volunteer oriented clubs. while yes he’s done all of that, he’d much rather be at the arcade playing games :( in fact he’s joined a lot of gaming competitions through the arcade, and he’s won a lot of them too! as weird as it sounds, that’s his motivation - knowing that he can win these games and the glory that comes with it, though he’s not a sore loser about things because who does that help? not that he could ever let people on campus know about what he does after school, otherwise they’d just laugh at him. right?

New/Chanhee 

mans is a fashion major and fucking rules at it. he was the kid in high school who was always dressed to the nines while everyone looked at him either like “bro chill out” or “lmao what are you wearing?” it was annoying sure, but he likes clothes and how they make him feel. a lot of people stereotype him because of this though and act like they know everything about him. it’s infuriating and hard to just brush off, but at the end of the day he knows he’s happy with himself and what he is doing. and he knows that’s all that matters

Younghoon 

he’s a lit. major with a concentration in the classics. he and haknyeon honestly bond a lot in that aspect because they’re constantly reading and rereading classic novels and plays together. he thrives in history too, and he’s constantly seen in the library so that he can learn more things. he likes cultural programs and clubs too because it means he gets to learn more about his own and get to learn about others’ as well. his ultimate dream is to write a story that will become a classic one day, even if it takes hundreds of years for it to happen. he’s patient

Jacob 

he’s another music major, but the main difference between him and sunwoo is that he’s not alone in putting himself through school. his family is supportive and helps him out with money, but they also give him a lot of freedom. he’s honestly pretty close with sunwoo despite all of this, and they’re constantly working on music together. jacob knows he can’t just rely on his family though so he works too. works part time at the local fair/amusement park which sunwoo just cannot fathom because “why would you do that to yourself? being around all those rotten kids sounds like a nightmare.” unlike sunwoo, jacob actually likes kids, and even more he likes to see people smile

Eric 

he’s actually on a sports scholarship for baseball. he doesn’t technically need the money for school, but he works in a garage fixing up cars in basically all of his spare time. it’s kinda obvious that he’s on the young side because he’s very “cars are cool :)” and there’s nothing wrong with that, it just means there’s a lot of people younghoon telling him he should join more clubs and become more involved in things going on around campus. but he takes pride in his skill at baseball and in his work with cars and the fact that he just got his driver’s license! take that younghoon
