We Are Mandalorians: Our Love Must Be Forged (An AxePaz Fic)—Chapter 2A

*maniacal laughter* I couldn’t pick what tone I wanted for the scene where Axe and Paz fight on the skiff, so I did two!! Muahahaha! 2A is a little heavier on releasing some genuine anger (but it ends well, don’t worry) and 2B is a bit more fun and flirtatious. This is the only point where I’m doing a split like this, so there’s no need to worry about the fic diverging later on.

Read both if you want to pick your favorite, or if you just find both intriguing. Read one if you don’t like the sound of the other one or you don’t have time to read both. Read neither if you’re not interested. It’s all about options, that’s the point, so read on in whatever combination you like and have fun!

The landing had definitely been smoother than Axe was expecting it to be. Despite Din Djarin and Bo-Katan both assuring the entire party before takeoff that the air wasn’t poisoned and the planet wasn’t cursed, the part of Axe that had watched the destruction of the planet in person all those years ago had doubts.

But when the older Mandalorians had arrived on their piecemeal skiff, Axe had finally accepted the truth: hope was possible. Mandalore really could be his home again. He pulled off his helmet, breathing in deeply, allowing himself to revel in the fact that his boots were once more on Mandalore’s surface.

Paz Vizsla stared at him, then shook his head and boarded the skiff. Even that couldn’t dampen Axe’s mood. So what if Paz thought he was an unfit Mandalorian? Paz had no more authority to make that judgement than anyone.

After about half an hour on the skiff, Axe noticed Paz staring at him again. “Hey! You got a problem?” he called across the deck. “I’d be happy to listen to your complaint, Son of the Watch!”

Paz turned and muttered something to a friend with a bright green helmet. “You look like a man who has had too much to drink, Nite Owl,” Paz returned. His voice carried without raising in volume. “I have my doubts you will be of any use on this mission.”

Axe crossed the deck in a couple of quick strides. It was his turn to go up, chest-to-chest, with his rival and not back away. He tilted his head back to look Paz in the visor. “And you look like a man who has no emotion,” he said. “Perhaps your heart is as rusted out as the Great Forge must be!”

The Nite Owls laughed. Axe crossed his arms, although there was barely enough room between him and Paz to do it. He raised an eyebrow in silent challenge.

Paz stood just a little bit straighter, which somehow made him taller than before. “My heart is solid beskar,” Paz said. “Mandalorian to the core. Not overemotional and flighty as you are. I would not trust you to keep your wits in battle.”

“I wouldn’t trust you not to abandon your fellow warriors in the heat of the fight,” Axe countered.

Paz clenched a fist, as if weighing whether or not it would be worth it to knock Axe to the deck. “What do you say we settle this with a game of strategy?” he offered. “I win, you stop watching my every move and leave my people alone.”

Watching your every move? Axe thought. Look who’s calling the kettle black. “And if I win?”

“That won’t be an issue.”

The other Mandalorians hastily cleared a path as Paz and Axe crossed over to the side of the skiff where a chessboard was attached to the deck. A small container bolted to the table’s side held all the pieces. Axe guessed it was probably the only source of entertainment for the old Mandalorians who had been stuck on the planet, judging by how worn-down the pieces were.

Axe set up the board. He tried to ignore the way Paz sat, large and imposing, across from him. “You move first,” Axe said. “It won’t matter, I can still beat the pants off you.”

He couldn’t help noticing several of his own friends snickering behind him at his choice of words. Grow up, he wanted to snap. “Go ahead,” he prompted again. “I’m waiting.”

Paz was, to Axe’s severe annoyance, a rather clever chess player. Better than Axe, he hated to admit. (He would rather lick rocks than ever say that in earshot of Paz, but it was true.) So, although he was well aware that there were different rulesets for the game across different Mandalorian coverts, even within the same ones, Axe called out one of the moves that wasn’t Nite Owl-standard, to hell with whether or not it was a legitimate move in some sects.

“You can’t move an Enforcer like that,” Axe said.

“It’s a flank jump,” Paz said, with the tone of someone explaining an obvious concept to a stubborn ox. “And you’re about to submit.”

The anger lingering in Axe’s chest overcame him and he couldn’t help himself arguing. “But only the Wing Guard can flank jump,” he said shortly.

“The Enforcer moves like a Wing Guard when it’s flanking,” Paz said. Axe remembered reading that in a comprehensive rulebook once; he didn’t care. The fury in him took over as a response to Paz’s posture—he was arrogant, and he thought he was so right.

“These primitives make up their own rules for everything,” he said, before he could think enough to not. The Children of the Watch standing behind Paz all tensed.

Paz stood, more threat than man, and pulled his vibroblade from its sheath on his arm. “Submit or fight,” he said.

“Well, if those are my choices….” Axe fired up his jetpack to launch a flying kick at Paz. He ducked out of the way and Axe landed back on the deck, now more attuned to his opponent’s speed capabilities. He moved faster with the huge jetpack attached to his back than Axe expected, but not as fast as Axe.

Paz took a few experimental swipes with his vibroblade, which Axe dodged easily. He pulled out his own knife and they parried no less than a dozen strikes in quick succession, sparks flying. Axe almost had a window when Paz elbowed him directly in the neck—he stumbled, then retaliated with a blow to Paz’s gut.

When Paz threw him to the deck, Axe shot out a metal cable from his right gauntlet and brought Paz down with him. Both of their vibroblades fell to the deck with a sharp clang, and Axe knew the second he picked one of them up that it wasn’t his.

Before either he or Paz could give a proper stab with their swapped knives, the Djarin foundling stepped between them. Axe suddenly noticed Bo-Katan Kryze standing at the bow of the ship, watching silently. He stepped back, away from Paz, still glaring at him.

More irritating than anything, than Paz’s attitude or his own self-awareness of how childish he was being, was that Paz was a good fighter. The duel had fed the beast of rage within Axe and stirred the other one; the one he had tried to ignore; the one that screamed Be impressed with his skill!

Paz didn’t move to return Axe’s blade. He holstered it in his gauntlet and turned away from Axe. Axe felt his eyes widen, but didn’t say anything about it. If Paz hadn’t noticed, far be it from him to bring it up. Instead, he put Paz’s knife away in the sheath attached to his own belt. It fit perfectly.

Axe sighed heavily and sat back down at the chess board, staring out at the surface of the planet.

HIStory’s ranked (no one asked, but here i go)

so i was sittin here, talkin to myself about the HIStory series’ and was like ‘hey, i should rank them’ (which i’ve seen a few other people do, but mines a lot more rambling than there’s because i can’t shut up lol) 

so here’s my views lol (ordered from worst to best, imo):

6) My Hero (HIStory1) -

probably universally acknowledged as the worst episode, and i’d be inclined to agree with the masses on this lol... not only is the tone and humour of this series so weird and disjointed, but the entire story line literally makes no sense lol?? it’s unclear who the audience should be rooting for (especially as it goes out of it’s way to paint our protagonist as really unlikable lol, not to mention the love interest is the dullest character ever conceived like ???), as well as this the ending feels completely unrelated and bizarre... 

i think this concept /could/ have worked if the guy the woman was inhabiting (which sounds weird without context, but like she’s dead lol) was somehow also inside his head? or if she got to see his memories or whatever & tries to adjust her personality to match the guy’s, causing love interest!dude to fall in love with the guy... (like i could go into more detail, i basically hav an entire au written in my head lol, but yh...)... that way, her letting go of him in the end would feel so much more well set up? especially if she was generally more understanding and likeable.. 

i think overall this series just fails in telling a decent story lol... & the cringe is even beyond what i can handle lol

5) Obsessed (HIStory1) -

people might be surprised to see this one so low down, especially since i know a lot of people really love this series (& if u do, no hate to u btw, ur allowed to like whatever u want idc), but i realllllly don’t like this series... like at all ...

the plot is weird anyway, which isnt inherently a bad thing, but then u add on the really bad couple and it’s just...... bad lol... like everything about their relationship is built on lies and deceit, and even more so than that it’s built on a lack of mutual respect and fundamental trust for each other! tall guy (i don’t know names soz) feigns memory loss in order to get closer to short guy (btw, the scenes with them being domestic were really sweet, & i firmly believe this could have been an alright series for the actors if the story line wasn’t so bad), short guy’s whole existence in that universe was a lie lol (like i know there’s no easy way to tell someone ‘lol well i’m technically from the future’ but still), then there’s the whole resolution at the end & it’s just so ??? frustrating lol!

nothing bugs me more than seeing conflict in relationships (on screen or irl) that could be solved simply by TALKING TO EACH OTHER GODDAMNIT & isnt lol... my other issue with this series is the fact tall guy 100% forced himself upon short guy in the tent & like we’re just supposed to accept it cos ?? he’s saying no and pushing away but actually he wants it because he loves tall guy ?? like fuck no i’m not accepting that lol! 

basically, bad & bizarre story & characters, & gross tropes just makes this hard for me to watch and enjoy lol... i think, like in my hero, this could’ve done with being a different story altogether lol... (maybe tall guy actually did lose his memory & he falls for short guy all on his own with no predatory intentions?? idk something like that)

4) Right or Wrong (HIStory2)

this one & my number 3 are very much tied tbh, but this one is just slightly lower just because i’m not as big into the couple as i know a lot of people are... & it’s not necessarily the age gap, cos i dont actually mind age gaps in pairings (just as long as the younger one isnt a minor, obv... and also i think any gap that’s 30+ years is a bit weird lol..).. i think my big problem with this is i dont really see why younger guy (again, i have no idea of any of these characters’ names lol) would fall for the older guy? like the older guy is obvs going thru some issues, and hasnt been taking care of himself or his kid properly because of them, but like we dont rly see a lot of why he’s a great guy? like we get the sense young guy is attracted to him, but like love is more than just thinkin they’re hot lol... idk lol this might just be me tbh i just couldnt see why he’d be interested lol

i did like the whole family side though, and showing how a man who was previously with a woman can still end up with a guy (bisexualityyyyy (or some variation of that thereupon)) is something you dont always see in media, so i thought that was pretty cool! (even if the ex-wife thing was kinda lame lol...) 

i think overall i see what this series was going for, and that it actually did an alright job in some parts... the biggest problem is that it’s kinda just forgettable lol... maybe that’s why people like obsessed so much lol? maybe it was a train wreck but ohh boy at least u wont forget it in a hurry lol!

3) Stay Away From Me (HIStory1) -

i’m a bit torn about this one, cos there are parts of it i actually really like (them going from rivals/enemies to being good friends to being more), and other parts i really didnt (the stereotypical squealing yaoi fangirl friend)... & tbh, i kinda wish this had just been a show about the budding friendship between the 2 guys... it almost feels too forced to me that they’re made to ‘fall in love’ when i actually think them both becoming less selfish and learning to respect each other as step brothers & friends is actually already a really great story (& i know that it doesnt fit with the whole ‘HIStory’ thing, but stories of platonic brotherhood/’bromance’ are just as important as gay representation... isnt a /substitute/ for representation, don’t get me wrong, but it’s always so beautiful to see decently portrayed non-toxic friendships between guys... ok this is a rant for another day tho shhh)

i think maybe why i like this one more than the other HIStory1′s is because kinda nothing happens lol... it’s not overly complex with weird unexplained magic things happening, it’s just a simple story lol... is it still tropey as hell? of course lol! but i think the ‘realism’ of the world really helps, and i def think this was incorporated more into HIStory 2, which i’m really glad about...

overall, this is a relatively harmless series & is actually quite sweet at times... the kiss is awkward as fuck tho (there, i said it lol...)... it suffers the same forgetability as right or wrong tho... 

2) Crossing the Line (/Boundary Crossing) (HIStory2) -

ok, so here’s a series i 100% love & totally agree with the hype around lol! i hav no interest in volleyball (or any sports tbh), but the way this show handles the friendships and dynamics between the characters is really well done, especially for a series that’s only 8 episodes long! i also really love that none of the characters really fall into any stereotypes (which is a great improvement from HIStory1 i can tell u lol), and are given the space to actually have some growth & nuance at times?! 

(nuance? in MY HIStory series?? it’s more likely than you think!)

the main couple have really amazing chemistry, and the way they get together doesnt feel too out of place or that it’s going to fast, it just sorta flows really nicely... even the side couple are pretty well done (though i wasnt that big into them on my first watch, just cos the whole overbearing older brother thing was kinda annoying... i liked them more as the series went on tho...)

i kinda dont have any major complaints? which is bizarre cos i always hav complaints about things lol... maybe my complaint would be that they all look way too old and attractive to be whatever teenage age they’re supposed to be lol... (but tbh that doesnt take anything away from the story so i’ll forgive them lol...)... i think maybe i wouldnt consider it my favourite because the story line didnt grab me like the number 1... but i really cant fault it in terms of what it delivers lol, legit such a well put together series!

1) Trapped (HIStory3) -

lol i think anyone who’s been following me for the past few months aren’t in the slightest bit surprised this is my number one... i just love it too much lol!

from the incredibly well written and well acted characters, to the interesting and engaging (even if a bit ridiculous) plot, to the beautifully told romance , it really has it all doesn’t it!!! & i think even if this wasnt an enemies to lovers thing (aka one of the most godtier of all fanfic tropes), there’s so many things going for this series that make it worth watching! i have a few complains about editing choices and a few bad trope plot points which were just unnecessary (plus the fact we missed out on a lot of background info on some major characters lol...), but like despite everything this series rly struck a chord with me deep down in my soul lol

i could go waaay more into detail (and maybe i will one day lol... tho not rn, i’m v tired), but the gist of the matter is: i really love trapped lol

(conclusion)

Even though i’ve complained quite a bit here, i am so grateful for the HIStory series’ for bringing really interesting, and a little mad, stories with gay characters and story lines, with a big emphasis on happy endings! there are so many lgbt stories/characters in things that end up dying or just have bad endings, which just sends this horrible message that lgbt people aren’t worthy of having happy endings, which is completely untrue! 

So i look forward to future HIStory’s, even if some of them are gonna be bad (& maybe none will live up to the trapped!shaped bullet firmly lodged in my heart lol)

JFA THE FINAL CASE THE FINALE

Mia basically tells Phoenix he is powered by friendship and its his strongest weapon. SHE AGREES WITH ME HE IS A MAGICAL GIRL.

Will Powers on the stand convinced Phoenix is going to accuse him of murder because THAT’S WHAT YOU DO TO WITNESSES I’VE SEEN IT.  Miles says: “I will personally talk to the defense later” He did this in DD too didn’t he. The whole “Don’t worry I will scold my troublesome husband” bit. This is where it started. Amazing.

Never forget that Phoenix just threw a cell phone. Across the courtroom. At Edgeworth’s head. Yelling “EDGEWORTH CATCH.” This happened in a court of law.

Gumshoe: I’M COMING PAL AS FAST AS I CAN

Miles: Wait, get here in one piece-

GUMSHOE: NOPE I’M RUNNING ALL THE RED LIGHTS  *immediately crashes*

Miles: THE FUCK DID I JUST SAY.

Fortunately Franziska is a weirdo who puts tracking devices on her subordinates so we get can get her to come to the rescue.

Back to the trial and hey we COULD get a not guilty if we wanted but Phoenix CAN’T BETRAY EDGEWORTH’S TRUST… then he’s like “His…trust? I never thought about it till now. I…I….I trust him?”

My friend was actually playing this part when I lent her the game and we voiced characters and when I did Mia’s “Yes. You do.” Response here I made sure to do it in a COMPLETELY DONE voice because she looks so done. This was Phoenix’s internal monologue too so she just must have been able to read it on his face or something “YES PHOENIX YOU ARE STILL INTO HIM THAT HAS BEEN OBVIOUS TO EVERYONE FOREVER. My sister has been kidnapped can you DO YOUR GAY AGONIZING LATER???” It’s so hard to be Mia.

Miles: THE TRUTH IS THE BEST I LOVE THE TRUTH I WANT TO MAKE OUT WITH THE TRUTH TRUUUUUTH I WILL NEVER BETRAY YOU I WILLL DO MY JOB AS A PROSECUTOR THE END-

Phoenix: Edgeworth this guy will kill Maya

Miles: shit. well okay fuck the truth. the prosecution rests.

Phoenix: WAIT SUDDENLY THE TRUTH IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME,

Franziska crashes in to saaaaave the day. Despite having been shot yesterday.

When she whips the judge Miles is all “lol she always has u in her sights” and then later happily informs us she’s probably beating the shit out of Matt Engarde (GOOD) he’s so weirdly proud of her violence.

De Killer does his little “I’ll return your item” thing to Phoenix and Maya SCREAMS AT THE TERRIFYING ASSASSIN “wtf I AM NOT AN ITEM” you tell him girl.

WOW I totally forgot that this is where Miles started his ~that man~ thing.

But... A man appeared and stood fast against that selfish me. I fought him in my usual manner, and tasted my first defeat. (…)_ No matter how desperate the situation... instead of giving up like most people, that man would hold strong with his undying faith. And then, before I knew it... I began to trust in that man as well.

HE’S LITERALLY DOING THIS RIGHT IN FRONT OF PHOENIX. I’m just imagining Phoenix being like “Uh, Edgeworth who is this guy???? Are...are you talking about me???”

“YES I’M TALKING ABOUT YOU WRIGHT OBVIOUSLY. I’M TRYING TO BE POETIC”

Maya’s baaaaaack. And informs us if she had died she would just haunt Phoenix forever through Pearl I love her so much

Maya: Hey... It looks like you've made some real progress, Mr. Edgeworth!

Edgeworth: Umm... Well, I suppose I'm a little different from who I was a year ago.

Seriously their friendship is so cute and underrated.  She like “U APPEAR TO BE TAKING MY ADVICE ABOUT THOSE BABY STEPS GOOD JOB I’M SO PROUD”.

Maya’s first order of business is to eat all the food and it’s gonna be GOURMET FOOD because THE KIDNAPPING INTERRUPTED HER FEASTING AND THIS WILL NOT STAND.

Phoenix calls Maya a glutton SHE WAS JUST STARVED FOR TWO DAYS PHOENIX THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS “TOO MUCH FOOD” here.

Maya’s like “wow I’ve escaped death three times now lol I’m invincible” THAT’S RIGHT BBY. DEATH IS NOTHING TO MAYA FEY

Phoenix doesn’t know how ~express his feelings~ to Edgeworth so he settles for giving him a whip.

And thus we initiate AWKWARD SIBLING CONVERSATION. God Franziska is such a good character. She is such a ball of conflicted feelings and…agh. Like there’s so much in this conversation like her feelings of abandonment and  she just wants to be acknowledged so badly by people and even Miles just sort of ignored her and didn’t treat her like a rival or equal because he was wrapped up in his own shit. 

It’s pretty clear from how she talks she both just really wants the attention of her remaining family but also resents him so much after being pitted against him for years thanks to her father…She had to work so hard and also pretend it was all easy for her and she was confident and just felt inadequate the whole time…and her emphasis on “that “girl” you left behind….” Indicates she  felt there was gender component to how her father neglected her and why people weren’t noticing her…

THERE’S TOO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT HER I CAN’T DO IT RIGHT NOW. I GUESS I’LL JUST SUMMARIZE THEIR CONVERSATION.

Franziska:  BEING RAISED BY AN ASSHOLE DAD AND BEING CRUSHED BY ALL THE EXPECTATIONS HAS FUCKED ME UP MILES. HE MAY BE A GENIUS BUT I’M NOT BUT STILL I HAD TO BE (ok but. U did become a prosecutor at 13 Fran. Most people would consider that enough to qualify as a genius.)

Miles: Franziska I too am fucked up. But look here’s your whip back just be a prosecutor and think about the TRU-

Franziska: OH MY GOD SHUT UP I HATE YOU.

Miles: k

Franziska: YOU JUST LEFT ME BEHIND MILES EDGEWORTH. LEFT ME BEHIND WITH MY SHITTY FAMILY AND HAVING TO MEASURE UP TO MY DAD’S WEIRD OBSESSION WITH YOU AND YOU DIDN’T THINK ABOUT ME AT ALL. Miles: her girlfriend’s dead and I think you guys would get along

Franziska: what does this have to do with anything

Miles: Well I’m pretty sure Wright’s forgiven me and I want you to be happy too…

Franziska: WE ARE NOT HAVING THIS CONVERSATION

Miles: Okay well. I’m not going to stop being a prosecutor ever again except well actually I WILL quit for a while in my spinoff game for a while and it will really piss you off

Franziska: what

Miles: anyway if we’re not prosecutors we’ll probably never interact because we’re both shit at communicating. So if you stop THIS IS WHERE WE PART WAYS

I’ve covered all the anime was s’posed to cover, so I guess I’ll binge the rest of the anime real fast like, just to sate my curiosity.
