so I'm going to make a post on cat body language since people keep catsplaining at me even though its literally part of my job. here is the cat from the post in question
mr asshole man who likes to scratch people without warning
yes the pupils are dilated! good noticing!! cats' pupils dilate when they are fearful but also when theyre very interested in something
now take a look at the rest of him. he's at the front of the cage. his ears are perked forward rather than pressed back. his fur is flat. his whiskers are relaxed. he has his carrier provided for him to hide if he felt like it
with all that other information provided does it seem now that he's afraid?
no. this cat has his pupils dilated because he was VERY interested in what I was doing behind my phone
he may have been unhappy but he certainly wasnt traumatized or being mistreated

kitty body language experts i have a query (i have some general knowledge but i just want to be more certain)
one of our cats (lady) recently got desexed so we’ve kept her in a seperate room for about a week. when she first got back from the vet, the other (torvi) was pretty unfriendly (growling and hissing type) but they told us that was normal
now lady has been released from her room (!) and torvi is a bit in edge. i believe lady is trying to initiate playing (meowing, following, running at her, sniffing also) while torvi keeps avoiding her and trying to get away. there’s no hissing or growling from either of them, so i dont think its explicit aggression
sometimes lady runs at her and torvi sort of stares at her or backs off, and then lady will run or back away too
there was one moment where lady tried to jump on her and torvi moved back, so then they stood and stared at each other like cats do before they start fighting. but then lady semi-rolled over and started cleaning herself - which i believe is a submissive behaviour?
anyway im just curious on hearing some opinions cos the last thing i want is these two getting in a fight before lady’s fully healed :,) my understanding is that lady wants to play (she’s also very excited and running around the room, which i realise is not great for her stitches but what can ya do…) while torvi doesnt totally recognise her yet with all the vet/desex scents still lingering

Just watched my orange cat discover the "accident" my senior dog had on the carpet.
His expression and emotion was so VIVID it was like I was watching a silent play
"Oh? What's this?
Dear me!! A mess!
My dearest fellow left this here and shall surely fall on the wrong side of favor for his folly!
For his honor! And for cleanliness! Swiftly now!! I shall hide and veil the mess!"
*proceeds to lightly dig at the air and otherwise clean carpet to "burry" the poop*
Surprisingly. The air failed to cover things sufficiently. His efforts failed.

Do cats feel cold? How can I tell if a cat feels cold?
When humans feel cold, we have several options to shelter ourselves and/or warm up the environment we’re in to stop feeling it. But have you ever wondered what happens to our pets when temperatures drop? Especially cats, who, unlike other furry animals, don’t have such thick fur or a double coat like dogs, for example.
Do cats feel cold? This question and some other issues are what we will…

hello! I was scrolling through your blog (delightful) and found the post about Beef and his whiskers position, and I'm ashamed to say that in all my near-thirty years of being around cats and thinking I understand them pretty well I never thought to pay attention to the 'circle shape'. could you please expound a bit on what to look for when it comes to whiskers position and how to interpret it? Beef is an absolute sweetheart but looking at a brachy cat as an example makes it a bit hard for me to generalize. thank you!
Thank you! And also thank you for your patience--- I wanted to give some really good examples and have been scouring my blog for the best circle whisker cats I could find.
Picture heavy post under this.
so this is the cat grimace scale. It's a sort of way to visually see if a cat is in pain/distress, and it gives a simplified view of the things I'm going to discuss. It's important to recognize that whisker shape/position is just ONE piece of communication and doesn't tell the whole story. A lot of this is also based on CONTEXT as well.
When you're looking at a cat face, here are the things you really want to pay attention to:
Ear position—Ears facing forward, ears slightly pulled apart, or ears flattened and rotated outward.
Orbital tightening—Eyes opened, eyes partially opened, or eyes squinted.
Muzzle tension—Muzzle relaxed (round), muzzle mildly tense, or muzzle tense (elliptical).
Whisker position—Whiskers loose and curved, whiskers slightly curved or straight, or whiskers straight and moving forward.
Head position—Head above the shoulder line, head aligned with the shoulder line, or head below the shoulder line or tilted.
Calypso's huge whiskers give a REALLY good visual on the 'circle shape' to look for. You can see her whiskers are pushed forward and are loose and curved. She's feeling playful and engaged! She really wants to know what I'm up to and what's in my hand (spoiler alert, it was treats)
Compare that to this later picture, taken after she heard a dog bark nearby:
Her muzzle is tighter. Her whiskers are pulled back a bit, and are straight. Her ears are set differently as well, one pulled back a bit. She's concerned, but not terribly worried about this strange sound.
You can also compare it to this handsome lad:
Again, his whiskers are fairly straight. They aren't pulled back as far, but he's still very tense. He was extremely tense and upset that I took his water dish away from him (because it needed to be cleaned and changed).
Milo is another great example of excited whiskers. They're pushed forward and curved, forming a sort of circle. Like Calypso, he's interested in what I'm doing and feeling playful. He was very interested in the toy I was throwing for him.
Gumdrop is a good example of a more relaxed whisker position. She's curious, but not feeling playful. Her whiskers are held very loosely rather than being pushed forward. Her tail nub is up, indicating friendliness and confidence.

my worst quality is that in 4th grade I was really extremely super into Warrior Cats, as in i was one of those kids roleplaying warrior cats on the playground during recess. and i thought it would be really funny to train myself to hiss at people as a startle reflect. unfortunately i did that to myself during some core developmental years and now it's locked into my brain as an actual startle reflex and now, over a decade later, i still hiss at people when being startled. this stays between you, me, my 4k followers, and the internet at large. nobody is allowed to tell my 4th grade best friend that i did this to myself or she'll make fun of me

Prompt 96
Bruce squinted up at the older kid, frowning. Oh sure they didn’t look like a kid, and honestly had a ridiculous-looking suit of some sort, but he could tell. And seeing as he was in an unknown place- without Alfred- with several people after him- nothing new, he was the lone Wayne now after all- he figured it would be safer to stick together.
Billy on the other hand, is inwardly sweating when baby de-aged batman comes sprinting around the corner and glares up at him for what feels like an eternity before ducking beneath his cape with a hissed “Hide me from those weirdos”
Um. Okay, what is he supposed to do now in this situation???
