For easy comparison, I wanted these two pictures side by side so i can point out differences.
On the left: Persephone is peering through an open window into the kitchen space. Despite the fact that it's dark outside, her pupils are smaller and less round than the picture on the right. She's feeling more relaxed. Her whiskers are much less tight; they aren't pulled as close to her face. Her ears are both facing forward.
her stance is more difficult to see clearly, but she's not pulled in on herself. She's less hunched up.
She's not fully relaxed, but she is feeling curious.
Right picture: Notice the ear that's flicked slightly back--- she's keeping a cautious ear out, just in case I get too close. She wants to be sure she's got a place to run to. Her pupils are fairly wide, even though it's very light so they don't need to be that big. She's feeling VERY nervous about my presence, but not quite enough to run away. Her whiskers are pulled pretty tightly back, indicating further unease.

kitty body language experts i have a query (i have some general knowledge but i just want to be more certain)
one of our cats (lady) recently got desexed so we’ve kept her in a seperate room for about a week. when she first got back from the vet, the other (torvi) was pretty unfriendly (growling and hissing type) but they told us that was normal
now lady has been released from her room (!) and torvi is a bit in edge. i believe lady is trying to initiate playing (meowing, following, running at her, sniffing also) while torvi keeps avoiding her and trying to get away. there’s no hissing or growling from either of them, so i dont think its explicit aggression
sometimes lady runs at her and torvi sort of stares at her or backs off, and then lady will run or back away too
there was one moment where lady tried to jump on her and torvi moved back, so then they stood and stared at each other like cats do before they start fighting. but then lady semi-rolled over and started cleaning herself - which i believe is a submissive behaviour?
anyway im just curious on hearing some opinions cos the last thing i want is these two getting in a fight before lady’s fully healed :,) my understanding is that lady wants to play (she’s also very excited and running around the room, which i realise is not great for her stitches but what can ya do…) while torvi doesnt totally recognise her yet with all the vet/desex scents still lingering

just for the record, that is not happy cat body language. The ears being pulled back in that pose and the tension in the face, with the narrowing of the eyes, means it's upset, probably by all the chalk on it, or the person taking the photo.
If this happens to your cat, you should brush them out or give them a light bath (with a damp cloth and some cat-safe shampoo) as soon as possible. The only way a cat can clean itself is by licking its fur, so it would be forced to inject and/or inhale all of that chalk to try and get clean.

Do cats feel cold? How can I tell if a cat feels cold?
When humans feel cold, we have several options to shelter ourselves and/or warm up the environment we’re in to stop feeling it. But have you ever wondered what happens to our pets when temperatures drop? Especially cats, who, unlike other furry animals, don’t have such thick fur or a double coat like dogs, for example. Do cats feel cold? This question and some other issues are what we will…

Day trip with screamer in vos getting ruined because bumblebees wings are doing the equivalent of that screaming that female cats do when they’re in heat. Like getting a megaphone and shouting “I need to get FUCKED” in public. Starscream is insufferably smug the entire damn time. Doesn’t help at all. Makes things worse, actually. Hes in love and it’s Everyone’s Problem

hello! I was scrolling through your blog (delightful) and found the post about Beef and his whiskers position, and I'm ashamed to say that in all my near-thirty years of being around cats and thinking I understand them pretty well I never thought to pay attention to the 'circle shape'. could you please expound a bit on what to look for when it comes to whiskers position and how to interpret it? Beef is an absolute sweetheart but looking at a brachy cat as an example makes it a bit hard for me to generalize. thank you!
Thank you! And also thank you for your patience--- I wanted to give some really good examples and have been scouring my blog for the best circle whisker cats I could find.
Picture heavy post under this.
Tumblr media
so this is the cat grimace scale. It's a sort of way to visually see if a cat is in pain/distress, and it gives a simplified view of the things I'm going to discuss. It's important to recognize that whisker shape/position is just ONE piece of communication and doesn't tell the whole story. A lot of this is also based on CONTEXT as well.
When you're looking at a cat face, here are the things you really want to pay attention to:
Ear position—Ears facing forward, ears slightly pulled apart, or ears flattened and rotated outward.
Orbital tightening—Eyes opened, eyes partially opened, or eyes squinted.
Muzzle tension—Muzzle relaxed (round), muzzle mildly tense, or muzzle tense (elliptical).
Whisker position—Whiskers loose and curved, whiskers slightly curved or straight, or whiskers straight and moving forward.
Head position—Head above the shoulder line, head aligned with the shoulder line, or head below the shoulder line or tilted.
Tumblr media
Calypso's huge whiskers give a REALLY good visual on the 'circle shape' to look for. You can see her whiskers are pushed forward and are loose and curved. She's feeling playful and engaged! She really wants to know what I'm up to and what's in my hand (spoiler alert, it was treats)
Compare that to this later picture, taken after she heard a dog bark nearby:
Tumblr media
Her muzzle is tighter. Her whiskers are pulled back a bit, and are straight. Her ears are set differently as well, one pulled back a bit. She's concerned, but not terribly worried about this strange sound.
You can also compare it to this handsome lad:
Tumblr media
Again, his whiskers are fairly straight. They aren't pulled back as far, but he's still very tense. He was extremely tense and upset that I took his water dish away from him (because it needed to be cleaned and changed).
Tumblr media
Milo is another great example of excited whiskers. They're pushed forward and curved, forming a sort of circle. Like Calypso, he's interested in what I'm doing and feeling playful. He was very interested in the toy I was throwing for him.
Tumblr media
Gumdrop is a good example of a more relaxed whisker position. She's curious, but not feeling playful. Her whiskers are held very loosely rather than being pushed forward. Her tail nub is up, indicating friendliness and confidence.

my worst quality is that in 4th grade I was really extremely super into Warrior Cats, as in i was one of those kids roleplaying warrior cats on the playground during recess. and i thought it would be really funny to train myself to hiss at people as a startle reflect. unfortunately i did that to myself during some core developmental years and now it's locked into my brain as an actual startle reflex and now, over a decade later, i still hiss at people when being startled. this stays between you, me, my 4k followers, and the internet at large. nobody is allowed to tell my 4th grade best friend that i did this to myself or she'll make fun of me

Sat here and combed through all your jayvik analysis posts giggling and kicking my feet but PLEASE tell me more about the whole dom/sub thing, especially the whole “they have absolutely not discussed that this is the dynamic, it just happens and neither of them acknowledge it” because that is genuinely so interesting. Like I could already tell Viktor had hella ‘quiet calm collected dom’ vibes especially compared to jayce’s ‘excited protective puppy who would FOLD at being called a good boy’ energy…
But the whole bit on the bridge where Viktor smacks his hand away without even looking? And Jayce EARNS BACK TOUCHING PRIVELEGES? Fucking scrumptious please tell me more.
god i need to get to writing my fic bc I feel like "talk more about it" would be solved just by me dropping the link This ended up being TOO LONG so I split it between me going feral about that bridge scene and then me going feral at other moments of nonverbal communication that I use to feed my Dom/sub "oh you two are just LIKE THAT" interpretation. So. here's part one
That bridge scene tho...im so normal about it
Tumblr media
hhhggg god that bridge scene is one that I rotate in my brain so much because it is such a small moment that makes so much of their dynamic click. For me, specifically, it clicks the "submissive like a guard dog is submissive" dynamic, where Jayce is, on a surface level, the stronger and more forceful of the two while Viktor is the one actually holding the leash (until he's too tired to because he's dying, and I only half joke when I say that their issues at the end of season 1 are because Jayce is suddenly the equivalent of a dog holding it's own leash and getting stressed out about it.
Jayce's touching before the bridge come across as pretty overbearing honestly. He's holding his hand out to keep Viktor from speaking out...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heck, while the still screenshot doesn't show it too well, Jayce slings an arm around Viktor with enough force that it knocks Viktor off balance for a second and shoves him forward a little.
Tumblr media
Viktor got dragged to the hexgate when Jayce is looking into shipping discrepancies happening there, even though it obviously doesn't involve him and he does NOT want to be there.
Tumblr media
(In hindsight this is a hilarious bit of showing that it did not occur to either of them that there's no goddamn reason for Viktor to be here. This is council business, Jayce outright says "I'm a councilor now Viktor" which does not answer why tf Viktor needs to be there. these twits just handle all problems as a unit lmao. The tragic flip is that this is could then be a breaking moment when Viktor goes back to the lab, realizing that him and Jayce are not, in actuality, a single unit anymore. because Jayce got a second job that is not Lab With Viktor oh my god you codependent dweebs)
Up until that point it would be really easy to see Jayce as being presumptive and unintentionally overpowering Viktor in personality. Heck, it's what I thought the dynamic was as I was watching Season 1, though even as I thought that it seemed somehow...not quite correct.
And then the bridge scene.
Even before the hand-smack, there's a flip on the reading up to this point that Jayce has been accidentally bowling over Viktor by force of personality/physicality. Jayce comes in hot, upset, angrily standing over Viktor and chewing him out, and Viktor is just like "....and??"
Tumblr media
Viktor is calm if baffled and annoyed at Jayce's frustration (also; Viktor just rolling his eyes and shaking his head at the actual riot happening a few yards away? hilarious. i love him.) His almost nonchalantly confused tone when he asks "what difference does that make?" always gets me. the entire back and forth says, to me anyway, that Jayce may be more brash and socially competent, but he's not overpowering Viktor at all, actually.
Viktor is going to do whatever the fuck Viktor wants.
This is immediately made clear by the much beloved hand smack. Viktor doesn't even look up, and his smack shows that he is perfectly capable of setting a hard boundary on Jayce's touching, and that Jayce will IMMEDIATELY fold and apologize when that boundary is set. That smack makes it suddenly clear that when Jayce goes for the shoulder touch right after apologizing, Viktor consciously allows it.
idk WHY but I also love this little tiniest moment when Jayce is going for the second touch. Viktor glances back as Jayce approaches him (looking like a cat with its ears pinned back lmao), then looks away as he accepts the second touch and they move on. It's such a tiny detail of showing Viktor, who is still pretty pissed at Jayce, seeing the touch as it comes in and then deciding to let it happen. im rotating them in my mind. please send help
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In my framing of them being a guard dog/handler dynamic, the bridge scene is us seeing a moment of the leash getting a sudden sharp tug to bring the guard dog to heel. It resets all the earlier instances as being ones that Viktor allows to happen, because he doesn't see a need to correct it.
fuck man this doesn't even get into the bridge scene as a major crack between them as the moment Viktor loses his trust that Jayce will understand his decision. i am unwell

Whoops this got long.
I’m pretty inexperienced with cat body language and have never had issues with them, though some of that is lack of exposure probably. That was a good thing in my teens bc I was not mature enough to respect boundaries unfortunately.
Anyway. Last summer I got to pet what was possibly a stray by my sisters apartment. Very very shy. Seemed interested despite the shyness, so I approached slowly. If my mom or sister also approached the kitty got scared and walked away. But with patience I got close and they were so sweet. Rubbing on my hand, getting their pets and sone love.
I was careful to move slow and pause often to make sure the lil guy wasn’t uncomfortable. When they put their head on my hand again I’d pet some more.
You don’t need to be well versed in the subtleties of their body language to interact well! Some patience, care, and intentionality in your interactions to see how they feel about it will go a long way. Even if you miss the subtle signs, giving them space and time will allow you both to adjust accordingly.
Not just cats, any animal really. Dog stuff below.
My dog? Who I’ve had since a puppy? I can do like anything with him. He’s very patient, and knows how to tell me off. The differences between a regular play growl, a slightly annoyed play growl, an annoyed growl, and a defensive growl can be subtle, but years of experience lets me tell them apart in a second.
Not so with a dog I’ve just met. I might not even be able to tell an aggressive/defensive growl from a happy play growl. So I look to other cues, like tails and ears. Often the more tense a dog is the less playful they are, but one of my neighbor dogs wants nothing more than to play with my pup and he’s practically frozen at the fence. He pretty much ignores me lol.
One of the dogs we see on walks isn’t the most people friendly, but like me since we’ve know each other since he was little. He is also a tenser dog, to the point where my mom was worried by approaching him. I made sure to leave the last few feet for him to close if he wanted to interact, and he came up and I got down and he sniffed my face happily. If a strange dog had been that tense I would not have approached. But I had known this guy a while and he had always been friendly with me. I exercised some caution by moving slowly and leaving room for him to not get close enough to interact if he didn’t want to.
Also subtleties of ear positions can be lost across breeds until you get familiar with one, especially between folded and upright ears. My boy Kuiper has two positions that I’m never sure I can truly tell apart, despite having him for 7 years since he was 8 weeks old.
its crazy to me when people say they cant understand cat body language cause maybe its the ambigous neurodivergence in me but i find them easier to understand than people. they literally come with a rumble feature to let you know theyre happy. i wish i had that.
