How did get to that conclusion lmao?

Us: Lucy was not needed, the cheating storyline was unnecessary...

They: did you want Buck cheat with RaVi?!!!!!?

I know! Like, that is absolutely not the point anyone was trying to make? Because we in our small Tumblr space can theorize and come up with reasons for why the cheating makes sense as part of Buck's spiral, but we're being TOLD flat out, that Buck in 5b is feeling freer and lighter. Which was fine when we thought it was because he was growing and breaking up with his gf as part of that growth. And people were excited for Lucy because we thought we might get him being FUN reckless and then maybe learning he wasn't quite coping so well with taking care of Maddie and Eddie to the point of not taking care of himself. But him feeling alive and free and happy BECAUSE he's cheating on his gf? That's a whole other thing! Is he maybe spiraling? Yeah, it's totally possible! But in 8 episodes focused on Eddie and Maddie spiraling and working towards healing do we really need Buck spiraling as well?

THAT is the point people were trying to make! Right now with everything else going on we don't NEED to see Buck also spiraling out IF that's even the direction they're trying to go (which if they want to keep L around, why would it be?). We would rather his time be used supporting Eddie and Maddie with maybe some smaller fractures like we saw with Maddie, or Eddie in 5a, and save his spiraling out more for the finale leading into next season. Then his "at work" time could be spent with Ravi and developing that dynamic!

There was no need to bring on another person! Buck has never had a NORMAL friendship! Bobby is his dad, Hen reminds him of Maddie in that wise older sister way, Chim is basically his brother, and Eddie...well. Things with Eddie went hella hard from day one in that enemies to heart-eyed blushing besties speedrun. Buck trying to figure out how to have a normal working relationship with Ravi could be fun! And it would bring a little light and levity to a tough season and leave some breathing room for the other characters and other stories, AND would allow us to know more about Ravi which is all anyone has wanted since Jinx!

Cramming another character in there to take time away from the ones we already have, especially just for the cheap cheating drama when casual viewers are already tired of tuning in only to not get to see the characters they watch the show for, was a poor choice!

And 5a was full of poor choices too because KR is not particularly great at showrunning 🤷🏻‍♀️ We know Eddie was struggling, but that was little glimpses after the breakup up, just a few minutes of screen time, Maddie was gone, Chim was mostly gone too, Athena had the whole Jeffrey thing and Harry thing but Bobby and Hen barely had anything going on, there was the one ep with Buck deciding he's going to leave but other than that he was locked in his apartment bubble with tay kay and yet we know NOTHING of what is going on in his head. We actually don't know MOST of what is going on in ANYONE'S heads because KR is allergic to characters taking the time to talk things out, and focusing on these long through-line stories. Yes, 911 is typically good at long-form story telling. But EVERYONE including casual viewers have noticed the show has a different tone and feel since she took over, and that things are inconsistent and messy, and the main characters aren't DOING anything and the sure as hell aren't TALKING about anything most of the time. So the only option is to jump from drama to drama and that's never been what this show is about.

Point is, NO ONE is saying we want Ravi to serve the same purpose as L. We're saying that we don't need that much of that spiraling arc for Buck right now, and when we DO get it, we don't need to add a whole new character who has been hyped up as basically a new main character. None of the other side characters got that kind of attention and hype, so why did she unless they're trying to give her lots of screen time and have her around forever? And it backfired enough in the 5 minutes she's been around that I doubt they can keep her around like they planned.

And hey, it might turn out fine. They might cut some stuff, she might leave forever, it could end with the set up for a great Buck storyline! That doesn't mean it will be enjoyable to watch, or that this was the ONLY route they could have taken. 🤷🏻‍♀️

On Redemption Arcs

I think we can all agree that redemption arcs are nifty. It’s nice to see people grow and change and get the happy ending.

But just like in the real world, redemption arcs must be earned in order to be satisfying.

Part of the reason everyone loves The Good Place so much is that the characters have all worked so hard to get where they are. We worry that they won’t get a happy-ever-after because we see how they’ve grown and changed, and know the work that’s been put in.

Part of the reason a lot of movie redemptions don’t work is because the work hasn’t been done.

I know a lot of people want to redeem a certain Force User. But I don’t. You know why?

It doesn’t matter that he was manipulated. What’s mattered is that time and time again, he’s had people reach out to him. He’s had moments where he could have made the right choice, done the right thing. And he smashed those.

He killed Han. Instead of wanting to destroy the First Order, he decides to lead it. (And yanno, he’s committed genocide.)

Is it possible to redeem him? Maybe. I just know that there isn’t enough movie for him to really redeem himself and get a happy ending.

And well, he would be following in his grandfather’s footsteps to do the right thing and have it lead to his death.

Plus: KR was written as a commentary on all the sad entitled white guys who feel they’re owed everything - power, the girl, etc. It doesn’t matter how they got to that point. What’s the line from Brooklyn Nine-Nine? “Cool motive. Still murder.”

Giving him that reversal without any of the self-realization and work? Just means it sends the message that yes, white men get a free pass on that too. Instant redemption.

And let me tell you, even if Rise of Skywalker was a 5 hour miniseries, I’m still not sure there’d be enough screen time to validate a redemption.

Merit is @krshush‘s character who they have so lovingly given me to smoosh with my boy Kian. I hope I captured your boy well enough *nervous sweating*

Inspired by a series of prompts (the color green, coming home, and first kiss) KR had sent me a while ago and I guess I finally got around to filling those prompts.

Kian’s heart races in his chest as large chamber doors fall shut behind him. Nianeth had brought him with her as her student to help her present progress in her research to the High Lords and Ladies, but when it came time time, he was immediately dismissed. He’s unsure whether to be relieved or not. Anxiety played with his stomach like a ragdoll the entire trip to the Summer Palace.

He’d been in equal parts nervous and excited to stand before the Court and discuss the effects of natural Feywild magic on objects from the Prime Material Plane versus the effects of arcane. Nianeth had given him free reign over certain aspects of the research, and, although he had been sure to check in with her through every step of the way -- explaining his reasoning for everything from sources to phrasing of arguments -- he was not fond of being absent and unable to defend his work.

He was even less fond of the idea of Nianeth taking the blame for any mistakes he might have made. She may be one of the Spire of Knowledge’s most prestigious scholars, but not even she was free from the potential wrath of the High Lords and Ladies.

He walks briskly through the halls of the Summer Palace, mentally picking through his research, line by line. There were no spelling or grammatical errors, he was sure of that. Had he correctly quantified everything? Was there a scenario he didn’t account for? Were all of his arguments truly sound?

A chill runs through his veins, bringing with it a Winter thought. If there is so much as one mistake they will never make me an official Spire scholar.

Kian shudders and picks up his pace, making his way towards the Palace Gardens. He needs air. He needs heat. Something to keep him grounded in Summer.

He emerges into the courtyard and he breathes in a deep sigh of relief. The overwhelming aroma of sweet pea, roses, lavender, and honey flood his senses and he tilts his head back, turning his face to sun. Muscles he had not realized were tense relax, and a small, gentle sigh escapes his lips. He must have looked a fool to anyone already in the gardens, but for once, he did not particularly care.

Regaining his composure, bringing his heart rate down to something that resembles normal, he begins to walk the footpath, past the ponds and through the topiary menagerie. He’s about to turn towards the small orchard of fig trees when he hears familiar, melodic, bell like laughter carried on the breeze. A laugh he’s only heard the handful of times he’s been to the Summer Palace. A laugh that’s accompanied by an impish grin and gleaming blue eyes that have a way of making Kian flush from neck to ears.

Merit is somewhere in the gardens, and if Kian’s ears are not deceiving him, he’s somewhere in the hedge maze.

Kian’s feet carry him towards the towering rose bushes and he peers down the narrow corridor. The faint rustle of leaves to his right. Notes of glee in the laughter when Kian decides to follow it. He weaves his way through the maze. A left, two rights, forward for a spell, before the last turn brings him to a dead end with Merit sitting in the shade of a small gazebo.

Merit greets him with a smile, pushing himself up off the bench and bouncing on the balls of his feet. “Took you long enough, my dear knight.”

Kian steadfastly ignores the way Merit’s hair flounces as he moves and the deep plunge of the neckline of his light cotton shirt. “I am here as a scholar, today. Not a knight,” he says.

“‘Dear scholar’ doesn’t have the same ring to it,” Merit responds, waving his hand dismissively. “Though, I must say, you look just as fetching out of uniform as you do in.”

And there’s that flush, crawling up Kian’s neck and into his face. Each time they’ve met, Merit has teased with increasing vigor, and, spirits save him, Kian is unable to find it within himself to tell Merit to stop. He makes a harsh noise in the back of his throat, something between a cough and clearing it. “What are we doing here, Merit?”

Merit shrugs, his entire shirt billowing with the movement. “You were the one who followed me.”

Kian raised his eyebrows. “You are the one who wished to be followed.”

Merit puts his hands on his hips and cocks his head, biting the inside of his cheek. Kian can only assume he’s trying to decide whether he wants to keep playing games or simply cut to the point. He already has Kian where he wants him, and there’s very little to stop Kian from walking away if he got too frustrated.

Merit makes his decision. “A dance,” he says plainly.

Kian frowns. “I beg your pardon?”

“No need to beg, dear Knight.” The flush of Kian’s face reddens, but he doesn’t miss the mischievous and amused quirk of Merit’s lips. “I want a dance. With you. Rumor has it you’re quite good at the four-step.”

Kian looks at their surroundings. The gazebo was only maybe eight feet in diameter, meant for intimate picnics or secret rendezvous between lovers. There might have been enough room for the gentle rocking of slow dance, but certainly not a four-step. “I hardly think this is an appropriate place for that.”

Merit sighs. “Maybe, but the past few times we’ve met have been during formal dances, and all those times you’ve been busy.”

“It is my duty to guard and protect the High Lords and Ladies and to embody the diligence of the Spire of Knowledge during such occasions.”

“Which means that I never get to invite you onto the dancefloor.” Merit steps closer, taking one of Kian’s much larger hands into his own. Something shifts in Merit’s demeanor in that moment. Sharp, impish features and gleaming eyes soften and morph into something more sincere. “I can tell you’re troubled by something. Let me help you take your mind off what’s bothering you.”

Kian blinks, gasping quietly when his heart flutters strangely in his chest. The hand Merit is holding suddenly feels sweaty and he hopes that Merit either can’t tell, or thinks it’s the Summer Palace heat. He considers Merit, takes in his petite frame. The top of his head barely surpasses Kian’s broad shoulders. So small and light, Kian thinks for a moment that he could probably pick him up with one hand. His tongue feels heavy, like wet wool, but he manages to stammer out a “Very well,” and allows Merit to lead him under the gazebo.

Getting into the starting position is a little awkward. Merit has to reach up to wrap his arm around Kian’s shoulder, and Kian is forced to stoop down to comfortably place his hand at Merit’s waist. There is a brief pause before Kian begins to lead, taking small steps as they circulate around the gazebo, birdsong in place of a string quartet.

One, two, three. One, two, three. One, two, three.

They fall into the easy rhythm, bodies coming closer together with each step, until they finish, back at the center of the gazebo, pressed tightly together in an embrace. Kian’s lips are parted, his chest heaving slightly, not because he’s out of breath from the dance, but for some other reason. Merit is just the same. He looks up at Kian from beneath dark, thick lashes and he licks his lips. “Tell me, dear Knight,” he says quietly, “what would you do if I kissed you?”

Kian’s breathing hitches. “I…,” he murmurs, pausing to choose his next words carefully, “would not resist.”

Merit hums, moving his hand to run through the long, silky sheet of Kian’s hair, pulling him closer. “And if I asked you to kiss me?”

They’re so close now Kian can smell the honeysuckle and wisteria growing in Merit’s hair, feel his breath on his face. His eyes flick from Merit’s deep blue eyes to his lips, before he licks his own. “I would,” Kian says, barely more than a whisper, an exhalation given voice.

“Then kiss me, Kian.”

There’s something about the way Merit says those words that make Kian unable to resist. It isn’t desperation. Not quite. Desire, perhaps? No one has ever wanted Kian. His square jaw and hard, bulky frame often considered unattractive to other eladrin and fey. But there’s a plea in Merit’s voice, in his eyes that makes it clear that he wants Kian, but only if Kian also wants him too.

And Kian wants. Wants Merit. Wants a distraction. Wants to not feel like he’s falling into Winter like he had been only a short time ago.

He leans down, presses his lips against Merits, grounding himself solidly back in Summer. The kiss is quick, chaste, a little bit clumsy. He’s never kissed anyone before and it’s embarrassingly obvious. He half misses Merit’s mouth, getting more cheek than he had intended. When he pulls back his lips are left tingling slightly and he can’t help their slight upward curve.

Merit is laughing, amusement and delight glittering in his eyes. “I think you might need some work,” he teases. The flush returns to Kian’s face. “It’s ok,” Merit continues. “I’m more than willing to help you practice.”

Kian straightens his back, gently pulling his limbs away from Merit’s body. He can only describe what he feels as disappointment at the loss of heat and contact. He clears his throat once more. “You are incorrigible,” he says, his voice returning to normal volume.

Merit smiles. “And you, my dear, are wound too tight.” He takes Kian’s hand again and begins to lead him out of the maze. “Now come. I hear the botanists have just planted some flowers only found in the far edges of the Wilds, and I’ve been dying to see them!”

Kian allows himself to be led through the gardens like a child. Truth be told, he’s been dying to see those flowers too.

My Opinion On Baekyeon

Disclaimer: This is purely my opinion based on what I’ve seen and heard from various sources. I am not claiming that what I write here is fact, so please take it with a pinch of salt. I also was not a Kpop fan at the time they were dating, so this is me looking back and forming an opinion.

**WARNING, THIS IS LONG**

Before I begin on my unexpectedly long post, I'd like to clarify that everything below is based on what I've seen, and I am not someone to cloud my judgement because of how I feel towards certain people or ships. Obviously I'm a firelight, and I'm not particularly fond of Taeyeon, but I don't pretend to know everything about her, either. If the evidence I've looked through pointed towards them being a legitimate couple, then I would be perfectly willing to admit that. But, as you can probably tell, I don't think they were, for several reasons. The only thing I want is for Baekhyun to be happy, whether or not that includes Taeyeon. I'm not possessive over him for myself or for anyone else. This is not a Ch@nbaek post, although it has to do with it, and that's probably why you follow me, because the reasons I think Baekyeon was a ploy is merely because of them and their interactions, and having nothing to do with his other personal relationships.

Let's look at the timeline first.

June 18, 2014 – SM drops the bombshell: GG's Taeyeon and EXO's Baekhyun are dating, and have been for four months! Here's proof of their dates before Taeyeon went to Japan.

2014 SMTOWN (I can’t find which one they were together at) – Interactions! That's good; we'd almost forgot about them...why hasn't media talked about them...at all?

September 15, 2015 – SM's star couple has broken up due to heavy schedules!

To start off, the timing was a little too perfect. It had just been announced that Kr!s had filed a lawsuit against and was leaving SM Entertainment! SM, while probably expecting it, are panicking. Fans are hurt, angry, confused, and fighting. SM needs something to take everyone's mind of the departure (and Kr!s's claims of mistreatment). And what could possibly do that? Well, the first SM couple between a Girls Generation member and her number one fanboy. Said fanboy is also currently one of EXO's most popular (aka most promoted) members, not to mention being part of one of the biggest EXO ships.

And it worked pretty well. Most people were focused on either giving the new 'couple' well wishes, or crying on one of their Instagrams about how they couldn't believe their oppa was being taken away from them (or Ch@nyeol).

But to some, it's already a little strange. How come we didn't see it coming...at all? Other than their few former interactions, there wasn't really anything substantial to suggest they were romantically interested in each other. No one thought of it either, except the typical “They touched; they're dating!” and some thinking they looked cute together.

But in case anyone doubted it, we have pictures! Verifiable proof that they've been on dates, thanks to Dispatch. With this definitely-not-false information and shady pictures of a totally-secret-date, we call all be sure that our very own Baekhyun and Taeyeon began dating just two years into Baekhyun's career.

But with just a little looking, you can see that nothing makes sense.

They never leave the car (because it needs to be super secret) yet have the roof of the car off (so you can get great shots from Dispatch’s secret location) and Baekhyun’s got his phone on full brightness so you can be completely, utterly sure that this is Baekhyun. You can’t really see Taeyeon, but that doesn’t matter, apparently, even though it’s supposed to be focusing on the two on a date. The kiss looks awkward, if it’s even happening. She’s holding his face and tilting her head nearly horizontally, while his face is badly lined up and miles away. It also looks like there’s a third person in the car, supposedly a manager, tailing along to this really secret date. After all, doesn’t everyone go on a date with their manager?

Not fishy at all.

Next came the SMTOWN interaction. Seems pretty legit in the end, although of the two sets of pictures I've seen, it didn't look particularly lovey-dovey for a couple that's been together at least six months. Granted, they're still shots, so perhaps the camera caught them without the massive smiles on their faces you'd expect, making it feel like they were awkward, whereas it was only a split second. Photos do that sometimes.

Admittedly, they’re pretty cute here:

The SM Halloween party passed but there was absolutely nothing indicating Baekhyun and Taeyeon were even together.

But then, the ‘happy couple’ break up (right after Tao sues SM for injuries). After a relationship seemingly made of just of announcements and Dispatch’s ‘lucky’ catch, it’s over. And honestly, all that’s come of this is tears and pain. The time they were ‘together’ was simply and honestly what looked like the worst year and a half for Baekhyun. He looked upset, sad, and anxious frequently, and from what I hear, Taeyeon didn’t seem much better. She often broke down crying, and it sounded like she lost a lot of weight. One proper, formal apology like Baekhyun would have been enough, but the flood of worry and anxiety she had after the break up seemed more than that. Granted, break ups are hard, but there’s two reasons why it still didn’t add up to me.

Number one, companies wouldn’t announce something the day it happened. If you think the relationship was real, it means that it was four whole months before they announced to the world that Baekyeon were officially a thing. So it would obviously be a good few months before announcing they’re broken up, at which point you’d except both Taeyeon and Baekhyun were through the worst of it. Yet Taeyeon didn’t seriously seem troubled until right after the news was announced, like it really did end the day SM confirmed it.

Number two, I don’t completely understand why you would be so upset towards the fans about it. Neither Kryst@l or Ka1 issued any kind of apology or statement about their relationship (which I also think was a beard, but moving on). Perhaps, as I did say I didn’t know much about Taeyeon, she’s more sensitive and it hit her harder, but I can’t be sure. But it just seems to me that the only reasonable explanation would be that the two were lying to their fans the entire time (against their will or not), aka faking their relationship. Taeyeon would likely be ten times more upset once she was finally free, because it probably felt like a waste of time and tears and hurt. But, of course, I can hardly claim experience in dating in the kpop industry and under a kpop entertainment company.

On top of this, I heard saesangs said that they believed Baekyeon to be real, but that Taeyeon was dating an SM sunbae at the same time. I’m not accusing Taeyeon of cheating at all. But I think that SM would be aware of saesangs and make sure that Baekyeon go out together and act like a couple even if they weren’t going to release it. Meanwhile, Taeyeon’s also got a real boyfriend, hence the two-timing rumours.

I’m not saying that when an idol begins dating, we should be able to see plenty of their life together, or see a lot of moments. I get it’s stressful, and that there are a lot of people who get incredibly possessive and angry when their bias becomes taken. I guess I just expected there to be...more. Anyone who goes to an EXO concert says you can just feel the intimacy between the members, especially pairs like Ch@nbaek or K@isoo. A sort of mental connection and radar as to what the other is doing and where they are. While the two were dating, it seemed like Baekhyun was more worried about Chanyeol and the other members rather than his own girlfriend in SM events, which struck me as unusual. Baekyeon just kinda fell flat for me, and coupled with the shady pictures and such perfect timing, it’s highly improbable to me they were actually dating. They seemed in good form at the 2015 MAMAs, chatting and laughing, unlike a lot of broken-up couples, and the other members looked comfortable, too (including Chanyeol). On top of this, Junmyeon made fun of Baekhyun’s stoic face when Taeyeon passed after winning an award. As leader, it doesn’t make sense to me that he would be teasing Baekhyun over an ex. They technically didn’t break up more than six months ago, and if the relationship was real, I don’t see him saying anything about something that would still be a sore subject. All the other members laughed, too, rather than giving Junmyeon disapproving looks. Back to the ex-couple, Baekhyun and Taeyeon individually. seemed a lot happier once it was all over and a little time had passed. It’s unfortunate that they don’t seem as close friends as they were back in 2012 and 2013, when they had a friendly sunbae/hoobae and idol/fanboy relationship, but there doesn’t seem to be any hard feelings between the two members or groups. However, I definitely don’t think they’re still dating behind closed doors.

Again, this is merely my opinion. This isn’t to hate their relationship if it was real at all; I love Baekhyun and EXO and have always been very supportive of them dating. They all deserve to have love in their lives, especially as they mature and get older, whether that comes from outside or each other. I am completely behind them on whatever decisions they make, or who they decide to date; it is their life after all.

I know this is kind of a random time to bring it up, but I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. I’ve got a lot of things I’d like to talk about eventually, and this is what was currently going through my head. I’m writing this the day before Ch@nbaek day, but I don’t think I should really post it on the day, so probably a belated happy Ch@nbaek day firelights!

Projecting all the offseason moves for the Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears offseason is upon us and because of that, it’s time to let the imagination fly. Even so, this is a team that is currently tight against the cap and will still have more movement before they can spend with any sort of impact, if that is indeed the plan.

There’s plenty that can happen in an offseason, so I’m going to do my best to project a combination of what I think general manager Ryan Pace would do and what I would do as well.

Without further ado, let’s jump into this head first.

Current Cap Space: $18.146 million

This includes every currently announced cut and I also projected Cody Parkey’s cut in here as well, since there will be no additional cap penalties in 2019 because of the June 1st designation. This also includes the $2.5 million cap credit from Mike Glennon’s 2018 offset language.

Cap Savers: (+$12.751 million)

Restructure Khalil Mack. (+$8.396 million)

By converting Mack’s $11.3 million base salary into a signing bonus, it would allow the Bears to save a maximum of $8.3 million. That would include a sixth year minimum salary and spreading the remaining dead cap over a five-year period, which would start this year.

Extend Chase Daniel (+$2.33 million)

By giving Daniel a two year extension (two years, $8 million), the team could also turn around and convert his $4 million base salary into a signing bonus. After a minimum salary benefit and the proration of the bonus, it would allow them to save around $2.33 million in 2019.

Trade Jordan Howard (+$1.535 million after rule of 51)

This is a move the Bears should only make after finding his replacement(s). I’m projecting that the Bears will trade Howard and a 2020 sixth-round pick to the Buffalo Bills for their fourth round comp pick (#132). This saves money and makes the most sense for both sides if Pace feels comfortable with the return.

Notes: Converting Mack’s base salary into a bonus is somewhat of a risk, but even an extra $2 million in dead space over the next five years isn’t going to cripple them, especially when the cap has continued to rise by $10-$12 million each year.

Even so, I’m still going to make this a safer projection and assume that just one of the two comes back.

Notes: This isn’t going to be some extravagant offseason for the team like in previous years. Their holes will be minimal and the focus should be more about finding missing pieces in the short-term that can help push them team closer to a Super Bowl. It’s possible the Bears could do better at safety than Poole, but I have a feeling Pagano will want versatility, which the former Falcon brings. There’s also “better” options than Yeldon at running back, but stylistically, he fits like a glove. Maybe they’ll shell out $7 million per year for someone like Tevin Coleman, but I’ll keep my projection more conservative for the time being.

3rd (#87): RB Miles Sanders (Penn St)

This is a running back class that simply didn’t test very well as a whole, but even so, there’s not a lot of first round talent, if any in this class. This should be a good thing for the Bears. Sanders is someone who didn’t originally pop to me on film, but the more and more I watched him, the more attractive he was. He’s a one-year starter with minimal miles. He doesn’t have a ton of long speed and may dance too much behind the line, but he has all the physical makings of a primary back in Nagy’s offense.

4th (#126): DB Amani Hooker (Iowa)

Much like the Poole signing, I expect the Bears to look for versatile options in the defensive backfield. Hooker can play in the nickel, either boundary spot or at strong safety. He’s someone that was used in multiple ways at Iowa and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s to trust a good friend of mine who covers that team. He raves about Hooker and it’s easy to see why. Could be a plug and play starter from day one, but the Bears won’t need him to be.

4th (#132): TE Foster Moreau (LSU) Projected Trade with Buffalo

I’ve kicked a few different tight ends around at this pick. My other choice would have been Texas A&M product Jace Sternberger, but I find it hard to believe he’ll be sitting there in the late fourth, so enter Moreau. He’s not a crazy athletic kid, but he’s big, has steady hands and is an outstanding blocker. The Bears have invested heavy at the position, but this may be a needed addition.

5th (#162): WR Penny Hart (Georgia St)

Depending on who you talk to, receiver is either a bigger need than meets the eye or receiver is not a worry at all. I’m more in the middle. I don’t think they need to go out and spent big money or use a high pick, but finding Taylor Gabriel’s eventual replacement in the fifth-round wouldn’t be bad. Hart is smaller, but he’s very quick and could be used perfectly in Nagy’s offense.

7th (#222): K Matt Gay (Utah)

The Bears are likely to draft a kicker, seeing as how they have a pair of seventh round picks. Right now, the two kickers on the roster are Redford Jones and Chris Blewitt. Neither have NFL experience. Enter Gay, who has one hell of a leg.

7th (#238): OG Alex Bars (Notre Dame)

This pick is all about value and development. Kyle Long restructured his deal to help the team for a year, but has over a $9 million cap hit in 2020. Bars has experience with Harry Hiestand and could be a nice developmental pick or depth at worst.

The Draft Bag: Getting Old and Best Case/Worst Case

In The News Cycle

Eagles sign old players; will probably die during a spring heat wave

As has been covered over the last few days, the Eagles have signed some older players — Andrew Sendejo, Desean Jackson, Vinny Curry are all over 30 years old, just as re-signees Brandon Graham, Jason Peters, and Jason Kelce are.

While there’s a warranted concern about player age, I think it circles less around the idea of “The Eagles are too old!” and more around the idea of “The Eagles are resigning a lot of old players...who are also old!” It can be tricky at times to make solid film evaluations on players who once played for your team; the memory of their greatest play sticks in your mind, and you fool yourself into believing you can get that level of play back.

When it comes to player age, however, I treat the measuring stick the same way I do the salary cap. Is it good to have cap space? No, not really. Sure, it’s helpful, but it’s also usually a sign that you have bad players and a bad team. It’s better to have no space and a good team.

Likewise, is it better to have young players? Not necessarily — it typically means you have a bad team. The thing about old players is that there’s a reason they’ve stuck around in the league long enough to see their 30s: it’s because they’re good. All three of the signees were once starters; two will be playing in situational roles, and the third (Jackson) will be the third-most important target on the offense. These are value signings for a team that wants to compete this year.

Age is an interesting metric, and worthy of attention — but let’s not miss the forest for the trees. The signings make the Eagles more likely to win and are not above market value — that means they’re objectively good. Everything else, while still noteworthy, is secondary.

A note on player visits

The Eagles have brought in the following players for NFL Draft visits:

What is the rhyme and reason to these invitations, you may ask? Good question.

There isn’t a publicly significant one.

Really, there isn’t. We’ve got a first round OT/OG, CB, and S; Day 2 DE, OT, and WR; Day 3 DE, iOL, and RB. There is no common thread between the players at shared positions or anything like that.

The main reason that player interviews, official visits, Top 30 visits — the whole gamut — occur is to finish evaluations. They are not always or even often indicative of team interest at the point at which they would get drafted. That is to say, the Eagles aren’t going to draft Amani Oruwariye where they would need to (25 or maybe 53) to get him on the roster.

Whey, then, are they brought in?

Because those rookie evaluations matter in trade talks two years down the road; during free agency in three, four, five years. You want to have the background, in terms of personal history, off-field incidents, and medical soundness. It helps you make decisions.

Player visits are information-gathering sessions. They certainly can help a player improve his stock with the team, but any signal of interest is really too weak to register on the radar. Take them as fun little factoids and move on.

Seven-Round Mock Draft

I opened up with what remains the most dire need on Philadelphia’s roster: a young safety. Both McLeod and Sendejo are on one-year deals and Malcolm Jenkins is on the wrong side of 30. In a league in which you want to have 3+ safeties who can play, the Eagles are locked for 2019 — everything beyond that is very up in the air. Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is the best safety in this class, with true combo ability and a feisty demeanor.

With the two seconds, I took two upside players and measurable kings in the trenches: Kaleb McGary and Charles Omenihu. McGary is getting some Round 1 hype, but Round 2 is more likely for him. A multi-year starter at right tackle, McGary’s experience, power, and length are all starting-caliber in the NFL; an extra year to sit and work technique would do him good.

Omenihu was a bit of a one-year wonder, turning a promising 2017 into a dominant 2018 as he moved to more interior play. I think he’s a real tweener, which hurts his value a bit, but I love the penetration reps he gets when lined up on the interior. He becomes a key rotational rusher for a defensive tackle room that needs depth.

Running back is the Eagles’ biggest need in a vacuum, but from what I understand, it’s still unlikely that they would go RB in Round 1. I like the way the board fell in Round 4, with Devin Singletary, an elusive and creative back, still available on Day 3. Singletary, who we’ll feature in the scouting report below, can execute every concept the Eagles run with regularity, as well as contribute as a pass-catcher.

I wrapped things up with Wyatt Ray, a depth EDGE who will help round out the Eagles’ room if Chris Long moves on; Chase Hansen, a Nate-Gerry type player who will look to stick on special teams; and Penny Hart, a potential KR/PR who can see targets on offense as a designated gadget/screen player.

Scouting Report: Florida Atlantic RB Devin Singletary

Devin Singletary is a fun, frustrating player to evaluate. His tape is exciting, electric, enticing — but when you get down to brass tacks, there are major athleticism questions that seem to limit his pro projection. Those concerns were reflected in Singletary’s Combine performance, so we have to weigh them as legitimate concerns.

Now, RB athleticism isn’t everything — the on-field instinct, feel, and product matters so much more than the testing numbers. Singletary’s ability to cut against flow and immediately get north against a fast-pursuing defense is his best trait: on wide zone concepts, he’s lethal when attacking backside contain and immediately working into space.

This play illustrates unteachable instincts, and they show up everywhere on Singletary’s tape.

Singletary isn’t a big player, but because he has such an explosive lower half and a great feel for defenders’ angles, he regularly creates contact balance by launching himself into contact and catching defenders off balance. Flexibility is a huge contributing factor to contact balance, and that’s where Singletary’s able to win: not with size, but with the bend to leverage himself into and withstand contact.

Natural leverage helps too.

Singletary is aptly nicknamed “Motor” for plays like these. He has a tremendous unwillingness to go down, which pairs nicely with his full-field vision and willingness to flip the field. That’s how he creates plays like the ones below: just an unteachable and inspiring intensity.

The film is so exciting on Singletary, even with the poor athleticism considered. He won’t be as successful creating outside of structure at the next level, but he’ll also likely get better blocking than he got at FAU. How well can Singletary stay married to and execute structure? That’s a bit of a question mark: his 55 runs of 0 or less yardage leads the class.

As it stands, Singletary is certainly an active and welcome part of a committee backfield who should generally be used on zone style concepts and in the passing game. With great open-field instincts and tackle-breaking ability, Singletary will always make the most of each touch he gets, and could earn a big workload accordingly.

WR: Gave the Eagles Penny Hart in my above mock, but also watch out for Olamide Zaccheaus, the jitterbug out of Virginia. He’s an ex-Philly HS player and the Eagles love to bring those guys in as UDFAs.

RB: RBs don’t do as much returning at the college level as they do in the NFL, but Kerrith Whyte, Devin Singletary’s running mate at FAU, was a productive guy. Ty Johnson out of Maryland also housed a few for the Terps in his day — dude has wheels.

DB: Ugo Amadi, the Oregon safety/nickel corner, is one of my favorite Day 3 guys in the class in part because of his returning ability. Clifton Duck, the well-named nickel out of Appy State, is also an option.

As is always the case, when your team doesn’t want a QB, you want QBs to go early so better talent falls. If 2 QBs could get into the Top 5 and force teams into trade-ups to get the guys they like, that means talent falls down the board. Four QBs in Round 1 overall is unlikely, but boy that’d be swell.

BTS BS&T JP.VERSION THEORY

THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS: A new beggining to death.

The story begins with two men who are reunited. Jin pulls up to a gas station with his truck, which will later become transportation for 5 more boys. Jin starts with words like “haven’t seen you in a long time”, or “it’s me”, vaguely. Namjoon and Jin, buddies who may have known each other. Namjoon, living a boring life getting some cash by working nightshifts, and Jin with his mischevious smile.

2. From here on, I’m guessing they all get together under god knows what conditions. There are a couple of plot lines.

V, a boy who comes from an awful family with an alcoholic father. He finds himself together with other outcasts, party tigers. The circumstances of him joining them: V has killed his father, fled the scene.

Later on, he finds himself in the comfort of Namjoon, forming a tight bond with his hyung.

3. Not only these two are close. Another pretty pominent relationship is of Suga’s and Jungkook’s.

Pretty sure they have a very close relationship, sweetly wrapping their arms around each other, the iconic flannel of Jungkook’s that’s hanging in Yoongi’s motel room.

4. They seem to have fun each day, everyone is happy together, living life without a care with frequent shannenigans.

5. When there’s a party, there’s liqour. Red solo cups are pretty popular in house parties and this is how the boys indulge in some innocent, or later on not really, drinking. They just can’t run away from the boheme of life.

6. The one who seems to indulge in hard liqour the most seems to be Namjoon. He is frequently seen associating himself with green substances. The very first instance of him having contact with weird green looking stuff is lighter fluid. A lighter that has been given to him by Jin.

7.Namjoon gives Jungkook the same drink he was having in the KR. Version of BS&T. (It’s obviously the same “Absinthe”. Actually, if you look closely in the JP. version, at the 00:50-00:51 mark, the bottle on the table, where both RM and Jungkook are sitting, has a writting on it “..SENTE”. Pretty obvious). Reason as of why Jungkook’s poor unfortunate soul had to drown it’s sorrows with liqour is up to interpretation, but I dare assume it’s because

things between him and Yoongi started going downhill. They did have a pretty intense fight. Besides. Jungkook was seen wearing the RUN flannel in the very first seconds of BS&T, JP Version. Either way, Namjoon sins in his own way, he pushed Jungkook into consuming hard liqour, making him incredibly unwell later on. Not to mention the boy got hooked on it too (lollipops in his mouth, all in bright colors, a drowsy expression, ect… ) - 8. Then we can see RM’s hands smeared with what seems to be blood. Backround information

V is the devil since he commited the greatest sin - a murder (That would be 2 people now, Jin and V’s father.)

Killing Jin was no big deal since he had the power to take Jins life. V, as he was the most Lucifer of them all, and Jin, who has made a deal with the devil in the KR.Version of BS&T. We all saw how Jin kissed the sculpture with huge black wings and then we saw V with the same wings as the aforementioned sculpture.

V could be called ‘’the fallen angel’’. Since Jin kissed the sculpture, he made a deal with the devil, who was V. And Jin was killed by V. The devil took one’s soul. Jin became the kind of guy who fell in the dark world and couldn’t get out… And it was shown as the deal with the devil.

11.Jin apologizes for corrupting everyone while fighting with V.

12. Jin gets fatally stabbed by V. V feels happy and free…

13. While still holding the sharp object in his hands, V is going somewhere through unrecognizable places (all you can see around him are curtains, he tries to get out of them). In the end, he fights his way out to the balcony with a dead end. If he were to go back, he would find himself in the same old world, with the same mistakes and responsibilities that await him, since he killed Jin. There’s nowhere to run. He reached a dead end. If he goes further, there’s only death. Personally, I thought he will jump just like in the KR. Version of BS&T.

14.Jins spirit is wandering around. He can’t take pictures with a camera anymore (and he used to always capture photos), so uses his hands to frame the last memories (dead people can’t hold items in their hands, obviously).

This brings us to BTS Spring day.

15.They hold a funeral outside their Omelas house for Jin, in the forest, to which they get by a train. (I’m assuming they reside in two places, “Omelas” and the train wagons, also, Yoongi in the motel)

16. Now this is important to point out. Very subtile but important. Jimin and Jin are very close. Jimin is close with Hobi too but let’s leave that aside or now…

Let’s remember RUN when Jimin came into a bathroom and all of the guys were partying. As from now on, we know that Jin is the one who took the whole ’’squad’’ with him down the dark and dirty hole… Jin welcomed Jimin to the party and dragged him in.

Let’s remember, I Need U. Jimin was burning photographs. Those photos were made by Jin. Jimin is in pain because Jin has died and he wants to burn them, it just brings so much suffering, thinking of the happy days together.

Next we see that Jimin and Jin are linked by apples, I assume. In BS&T JP.Version Jimin had an apple when he was sitting in the room with Suga, he then bit the said apple in the following scene.

2 Jimins. One in a room dressed up fancy with Suga and the other one released by Suga, dressed in a more street like kind of style…The casual Jimin is the unclean one and the one who is sitting in the room with Suga is the pure one. The unclean one wanted to prevent the same mistake he made to stop the pure Jimin from biting the apple (the casual Jimin has already bitten the apple as it was shown in 00:58-1:01, he was dressed up casually I dare say.) But Suga covered the pure Jimin’s eyes, didn’t let him see the unclean one.

So I’d say Jimin was in a halfway of making a deal with the impure world…But then the unclean Jimin was taken back to the saturated colour section from where he came from and where Jin is. So the pure Jimin probably made the same mistake (indulging in the dirty pleasures) because you can’t turn time back. And in the KR. Version of BS&T Suga covered Jimin’s eyes. But before that Jimin held an apple and Suga held a blindfold, which later was tied on Jimin, then Jimin was tied to a door and he couldn’t let himself free. He was freaking out until he removed the blindfold… In the JP.Version Jimin always had his eyes covered by Suga’s hands too, which indicates the one who didn’t let Jimin leave everything and the one who dragged Jimin in FULLY with the rest of the members is probably Suga. Yet Yoongi’s role isn’t unraveled nor executed fully.

But then in ‘’BTS Short Film Awake’’, Jin is holding an apple and remembering something, which probably is Jimin.

17.So this is why Jimin was the one who was mourning Jin the most: because they were very close and Jimin was the one who hanged the shoes on the tree (shoes on tree mean that someone has died). So this brings us to the conclusion that the Spring Day MV is about the mourning of Jin.

Let’s remember the Spring Day performances. Jimin is waiting for Jin and when Jin comes, a huge flash appears, similarly to the ‘’light at the end of the tunnel’’. They hug. Everything looks like Jin is saying goodbye to Jimin.

9. Then let’s remember those 6 white petals. Jin holds the flowers wearing white. 6 petals = 6 friends he has corrupted and left in the real world. Jin he feels really bad for them as he regrets everything he has done. If you watched the MV you have probably noticed that Jin did everything other 6 members did in their MV’s but just like a memory.

Jin is now alone. Dead. Detached from those 6 petals resembling his friends. He’s always seen holding lillies, white lillies are commonly associated with death. Not only does V throw 6 petals of lillies away (I Need U, JP. Version), connecting Jin and V with the death motive, Jin is just always seen around those white flowers. It’s like a weird purgatory of sorts.

And here it is. The (almost) whole world of the 7 boys explained, with their underlining stories and struggles. We very much hope you find this theory plausible and it makes sense, since, well, it does to us. Thank you for your attention.

Bodhi comes back home and there are people waiting for him.

Bodhi Rook sighed, looking at the ship’s viewpoint while they landed in Horsian Prime, the huge buildings shining around the ship and he maneuvered to the hangar in the Senatorial Building. He’d been off-planet for a long time, working for the Senate in whatever mission they needed him on, and now he was finally back.

“Eager to land, Rook?” His co-pilot, a green Twi'lek named Kooth, asked with a grin.“Any specific reason for if waiting for you down there?”

“Oh yeah!” He laughed, tapping some buttons in the control panel without even needing to look at it anymore. “I promised this girl I'd spend some time with her when I got back, and she’s been bugging me about it to me ever since I left.”

“Rogue Guardian, you're clear to land on platform 62.”

“Copy that, landing pad. Heading to platform 62.”

“Well, Captain, let's get this over so you can go see your girl.” Kooth mumbled, patting Bodhi’s shoulder with a laugh. “Force knows it's not good to keep them waiting.”

It took precisely four seconds for her to slam against Bodhi’s legs, after his feet were out of the ramp and touching the platform.

“Uncle Bo!” She exclaimed, giddily. “You're back! I knew you would be back! You promised me you'd come back and now you're back!”

He laughed at the eager girl and picked her up in his arms, pressing a noisy kiss into her cheek, making her giggle.

“I swear you grew up so much since the last time I saw you.” He mumbled, tugging the tip of her braided dark hair with his free hand. “You are huge!”

“Of course I am!” She said, a mix of outrage and pride only the little girl could manage. “I'm already 4 years and a half. I'm a big girl now.”

“Now, come on Hope. Let Bodhi at least breath before you tackle him.” Bodhi was so distracted with her that he didn't notice her father approaching until he was already standing right next to them.

“He is breathing just fine, Papa.” Hope responded, lifting her nose to him defyingly in an act that was so Jyn that made Bodhi stare as Cassian laughed at his daughter. Even though Hope had taken mostly from Cassian, from her dark colored hair and warm brown skin to her thin face, sometimes she reminded Bodhi of Jyn, with her small nose, bright green eyes and fierce attitude.

“Of course he is, cariño.” Cassian mumbled at his daughter. “How was your job, Bodhi?” He asked, as they exchanged a one arm hug.

“Same old, you know.” Bodhi half shrugged. “A lot of diplomacy and a lot of flying senators around.”

“Mama said most of the Senator are kriffing idiots.” Hope supplied, making her father roll his eyes at her.

“You can’t say that kind of things out loud, Hope!” Bodhi said, trying to hide the amused tone in his voice. “It’s not nice.”

“But Mama said it!”

“Well, Mama is an adult and she said a lot of things.” Cassian said. “That you can’t keep repeating, alright?”

“Alright.” Hope nodded dutifully. Cassian smiled at her but , away from the girl’s line of sight, rolled his eyes at Bodhi which meant they had this conversation before.

“Where is Jyn?” Bodhi asked, passing Hope from on arm to another and looking around.

“She got caught up with some problem with new recruits, said she’d meet us home.” Cassian answered. “Can we go?”

“Papa promised he’d get us ice-cream before we get home.” Hope added. “You’re coming with us, right?”

“Yeah, just…” he eyes the twi’lek leaving the ship, a bag on his shoulder. “Everything good, Kooth?”

“Everything good, cap.” Kooth responded with a thumbs-up. “Go have your fun with your girl.”

“Alright, what was that thing about ice-cream I just heard?”

Jyn was laying on her back in the living-room sofa of her and Cassian’s apartment when they arrived, head bent back, her brown wet hair making a puddle in the sofa’s arm. She seemed to be asleep, one arm draped to cover her eyes and the other dangling from the sofa side.

Hope disentangled her hand from Cassian’s as soon as the door slid open and rushed to her mother, tossing herself in Jyn’s chest, getting a “oof” and a grunt out of her mother.

“Mama, mama! We’re back!” She said, settling herself onto the short woman’s stomach. Jyn rubbed her face with her hands before smiling to her daughter.

“I can see that, starshine.” She mumbled, patting the girl’s dark hair and sitting up. “Come on, up with you.” With a silly smile, Hope jumped from her mother’s lap to stand on the sofa, her shoes long forgotten near the door. “Well, look who’s finally decided to show up around here!”

“It’s good to see you too, Jyn.” Bodhi smiled, as she came towards him and enveloped him in a hug.

It hadn’t taken much time for the three lone survivors of Scariff to bond together, becoming some sort of a family, over their scars and horrors. Even after they were able to find a replacement body for K2 and even after it became clear that Jyn and Cassian’s feelings for each other were not the brotherly type Bodhi had for them. They were family, the three of them. Four, if you consider the sassy droid. Five, with the bouncy child, jumping up and down the sofa. Their family of five people.

“Well, it took you long enough.” Jyn poked her finger into Bodhi’s chest one last time before turning to Cassian and pressing her lips to his in a quick soft kiss. “I set the table, but I didn’t dare to touch the food, unless you want to eat something burned.“

Cassian just laughed, kissing the top of her hair before mumbling “I'll do it.”

“You know, there is a 48.6% chance that you will fall down and hurt yourself if you continue jumping on the sofa like this.” K2 metallic voice resonated as he stood in the corner of the room, turned to Hope.

“Kay, enough.” Jyn mumbled, patting his chassis. “Hope, down, come on. Go wash your hands before dinner.” The little girl frowned as her mother placed her on the floor and made a face to K2 before moving on to the fresher. “Can you help her, so she wash herself on the sink?” She asked with a smile that was between apologetic and amused.

Bodhi just laughed as he followed Hope into the fresher while Jyn made her way into the kitchen, placing her arms around Cassian’s waist and leaning her head against his shoulder blades as he cooked.

“How come Cassian can cook so well if he lived for 25 years of his life under military rations?” Bodhi wondered out loud as they all set around the dinner table. Cassian had cooked something from his home planet that smelled amazingly and tasted even better.

“Don’t wanna know.” Jyn shrugged. “As long as he keeps cooking, I’m good. I don't need to know.”

“You would starve if I didn’t cook for you.” Cassian pointed at her with his fork.

“Exactly We would never want that!!” She answered, waving one of her hands as to put emphasis into it. “Ah, Bodhi! I left some bed cushions and a pillow on the sofa so you can sleep on it.”

“Guys, you really don’t have to do this every time I'm on planet.” Bodhi intervened. “I can sleep just fine on my own apartment.”

“Bantha crap.” Cassian must have poked Jyn with his foot under the table because she shot him a exasperated look before turning to her laughing daughter and adding. “You can't repeat that.”

“I won't, Mama.” She responded seriously, swallowing her giggles.

“We know you don't sleep well when you're alone on your apartment.” Cassian offered.

“Every time you sleep there on your own you just look like kr…” she stopped at the look Cassian gave her and sighed. “Like you had a terrible night of sleep.”

“Honestly guys…”

“I can sleep with Mama and Papa and you can sleep in my bed.” Hope offers happily.

“That's really sweet cariño, but I think uncle Bodhi won't fit in your bed.” Cassian said, offering a smile at the little girl.

“Plus, we got that sofa that gets bigger just so Bodhi can sleep on it, remember?” Jyn told her daughter, as if it is the simplest thing in the world, but tears prickle Bodhi’s eyes. No matter how long it passes, it still took him by surprise how much he’s part of Jyn and Cassian’s life.

“Guys, I don't want to intrude, really…” he babbled, but Jyn interrupted.

“Don't be ridiculous Bodhi. You're family.” She smiled sweetly at him, before adding. “Now, it's settled. And if I hear you mumble this nonsense about intruding again I swear to the force, I'll throw a glass or something at you.”

“At least let me clear the table then.”

“Alright, you help me. And you,” she said, standing up and going to Cassian, wrapping her arms around his neck, planting a kiss on his cheek. “You’re going to learn this new game Hope was showing me yesterday, right?”

“Yes Papa! It’s really fun! Mira, dejame mostrarte.” Hope jumped from her chair and started tugging her father’s hand. Cassian exchanged a glance with Jyn and pressed his lips to her and got up to follow his daughter to the living room.

Bodhi and Jyn worked side to side in a peaceful silence for a while, her washing the dishes as he dried them.

“You know, maybe if you had someone to share your apartment with…” She begun after some time.

“Not again, Jyn.” He growled. “We’ve talked about this.”

“You’ve never been serious with anyone since Luke.” She mumbled, turning back to the sink to stare at him. “Maybe it would be nice for you.”

“Me and Luke broke up in friendly terms, years ago.” He said. “I just haven’t found anyone I find interesting, that’s all.”

“I just worry about you, you know?” She mumbled, bumping her shoulder with his. “You’re family, we just want to see you happy.”

“Don’t worry about it, little sister.” Bodhi smiled, listening to the sound of Cassian and Hope playing in the living room, taking softly in Festian. He thought how he missed them every time he was away, and about how they always gave him a home. He imagined waking up in his cold apartment alone and afraid, and then imagined waking up to Hope poking him in the morning, a bright smile on her face. His family. “I’m happy.”

What do you listen to besides kpop/khh/kr&b?

A: I listen to a lot of music and a lot of different music. like my taste in music is huge, I do tend to prefer a certain sound, but honestly my music library is huge and all over the place. my taste in music has shifted a lot over the years, but tbh I still love and listen to a lot of the same music I listened to when I was a teen (aka typical punk, metal, pop punk groups from the 2000′s) like; marilyn manson, simple plan, blink182, sum41, linkin park, radiohead, rise against, the used, underoath, two door cinema club, vampire weekend, disturbed, death cab for cutie, him, slipknot, fall out boy, panic!, boys like girls, the brand new, alexisonfire, silverstein etc etc etc etc

When I was in ninth grade, I listened to a lot of Brand New. I have a lot of specific memories of being an angst ridden teenager, sitting in the back of my mom’s green van as she drove me from place to place. I’d blast Brand New, and look out the car window. Rain hit the window and dripped down, my breath fogged the glass as my head leaned against it, and I listened to Brand New. My favorite song at the time was Quiet Things. I thought the lyrics were incredibly deep. “Keep that thought in your head, and keep your feet on the ground” Jesse sang to me. Now I think that’s probably one of the worst songs Brand New had to offer. Now as I listen to The Devil and God, or Deja, thier two best albums, I can really appreciate the lyrics. At the time I’m writing this, I’m only 19, so I don’t pretend to be much deeper than I was only 4 years ago, when I was 15, but I at least feel that between my life experiences, and the hallucinogenic substances I’ve taken, I can think a little more intelligently than I could then. I remember when I worked at Outback, I trained this guy. I don’t remember what his name was, but I remember a lot about him. I’ll call him I-----. I----- was just like me, and honestly, add a few more years to me, and I can very easily see myself becoming him. He was into psychedelics, telling me once about the time that he took acid 6 hours before his math class, and was asked to write on the whiteboard. He lived a pretty average life, went to a pretty average school, he had troubles dating, didn’t buy the JFK assassination explA--tions, but most of all, he was into Brand New. It’s not uncommon to bond over music taste, but I don’t think since 2011 I’ve ever met anyone into Brand New. Kr---- is into Brand New now, but not when I told her about it around the same time. J--- can tolerate it as well, but I don’t think he shares the same appreciation for them as I do. I----- on the other hand, was extremely into them. We shared a lot of music taste actually. He had a Blink 182 tattoo on his left breast, which he showed me the day I donated blood. “Damn, I can’t donate blood anymore”, he said, before showing me. It doesn’t so much concern me that I’ll become like him because of these traits. A cool tattoo, and a healthy appreciation for early 2000’s emo is what makes you a successful young person, in my opinion. What concerns me is his negative traits. His drug use to be more specific. I don’t know if I worry that I’ll start using drugs as frequently as he did, but I think I worry more that my motivation will be as zapped as his always was. I remember one particular evening he came in, and was on his phone most of the night. He told me he was a bit buzzed, and that he was having issues with his girlfriend, so I thought myself to be an excellent friend when I didn’t mind him texting constantly during our shared shift, and covering for him while he went out to take smoke breaks.

Honestly, even this isn’t behavior that I would be concerned to share with him. At my current job, teaching kids Minecraft after school, while I was dating Tessa, I would frequently run to the bathroom to check my phone or stress-vape. In extreme moderation I don’t even really see this as a dangerous activity. But as my mother is so fond of saying, it’s a slippery slope. One day at outback, I----- disappeared. I wasn’t sure where he went, and I was sad, because he was one of the only interesting people there who spoke english. A-- was a fantastic old El Salvadorian lady (almost all of the kitchen staff were El Salvadorian refugees) who trained me, and really took me under her wing. She taught me the majority of the Spanish relevant to working there. Basura, saboya, para acqui, para yavar, etc. She was sort of like the old hispanic grandmother I never had. She was constantly being hit on by the line chef, O---. The name O--- is short for something, but I’m not sure what. Once, when I asked A-- what O--- had said to her, before repeatedly smacking her ass, she misunderstood, and told me, “O--- has 10 wives, and 7 childrens with all of them!”. I’m not sure if she meant to say he had 7 children total, or 70 between all his wives, but either way, O--- was a player. He was an absolute lunatic, but he was the best line chef outback ever had. I was told once the managers only tolerated him because he was essentially irreplaceable. I like to imagine back in El Salvador he was the Suis Chef of a 4 star restaurant, serving the aristocrats while secretly giving food to the rebels. Or maybe he hated himself for serving the wealthy of his country, but was trapped in his job making their steaks. That would at least explain the drinking. I remember one time, Ju--, the young assistant manager, came up behind O--- as he was putting the finishing touches on some fillet minion. He grabbed the plastic bottle propped above O---’s stove and took a deep smell, crinkling his nose.

“Whatcha got in here, O---?” he said. “Water man.” Said O---, in his thick accent. Ju-- obviously didn’t believe him, but to prove either his virility or the water’s virginity, he snatched the bottle back and swallowed down all of its contents. Ju-- was a cool guy as well. One time, while he was helping me at the salad station, the topic of drugs came up. He asked me if I’d ever tried weed, and I told him once, but it didn’t really effect me. “You know, I’m like your manager, so I can’t really say you should try it again,” he said. “But you should definitely try it again”. Between him and R----, the other young assistant manager, it seemed weed was definitely the cool thing young adults did in their free time. I can’t really protest this notion, because at least in my own life that seems to be the case. R---- was identical to Ju--, just without Ju--’s glasses, beard, or hot waitress girlfriend. He was also a bit more of a “bro” than Ju-- was. What I mean by this is, Ju-- was a very cool, collected guy. He didn’t have to flaunt his confidence. Either because of R----’s lack of it, or excess of it, he did. R---- was loud, outgoing, and eventually became a waiter, which seemed to be the final resting place for people like him. Community college dropouts, with infective personalities. I was always rather put off by R----. Not because I didn’t like him, at least, I like him fine now. But at the time, his confidence and bombastic attitude were just too much for a minimum wage job where I had no upward prospects other than deep frier duty. I guess this was the real appeal of I-----. Unlike his english speaking counterparts, Ju-- and R----, he was a lot more relaxed. He was laid back, but did his job most of the time. He was the kind of guy that these days I’d like to smoke a blunt with (I’m really mad I forgot his name, or I’d look him up on Facebook right now). This may have been because he didn’t have much in the looks department. At least, not at his age. I remember he had sort of a ratty look to him. Big, beady eyes, and a light mustache that he’d probably only shaved once the three months he worked there. He didn’t have the confidence of the bigger guys like Ju-- and R----, so he kept his composure and put all of his effort into being a nice kid. He seemed genuinely interested in my opinion, despite the fact that he was nearly 5 years my senior, and always had something interesting to talk about, like Brand New. He was fired because of his terrible work ethic. I can’t really disagree with the managers on that one. Even when I was there to cover for him and push him along, he seemed to only do the work of half a person. Maybe because that’s what he was. He seemed like a really depressed guy, deep down. Maybe that’s why we got along so well. It definitely explains the interest in early 2000’s emo music. He told me he was going to Penn State, for a degree in communications. He was almost a senior and told me from day one he couldn’t decide what he wanted to do. He also told me that at this point all he knew was it wasn’t communications. But what could he do? He had already worked for this degree three and a half years. He couldn’t throw all that time and money away. I feel like I might be like him in this regard. Am I doing cyber because it’s what I want? Or am I just doing it to impress my dad. When I really think about it, I wish I could be doing something in the arts. I wish I could be a cartoonist, or an animator, maybe a photographer, and obviously as I’m writing this, I feel like I should be an author. No. I’m not doing it for my dad. I’m doing it for me. But not for my happiness, at least not in the short term, I’m doing it for the money. Everyone says don’t work for a job that doesn’t make you happy, but really, are a million people in something like data input services because it makes them happy? I don’t think so. I think that’s one of the big secrets of adulthood. You can be happy on the weekends, with the money you made the other 5/7ths of the week. I----- was fired about a month before I quit. L---, the general manager, and proprietor (a word I picked up at Outback) told me in the weeks before I quit that he came back. He was totally drunk and slurred at her, “you have to give me my job back. You’re not allowed to just fire me. It isn’t fair”. They almost needed the police to get him out of the dining area. That was the last I ever heard from him. I gave him my number before he left, because he said he would send me a list of songs to listen to, but he never texted me. He’s just gone. Vanished back into the population of the world. This is what I’m most afraid of becoming. At first, an interesting guy, but underneath the layers of self-pity and substance abuse, a broken, sad person. Maybe he grew up. Maybe now he’s out there, being happy on the weekends, doing technical writing for some Japanese firm, using his communications degree. But I prefer to believe that somehow, through acid or magic, he transcended this world and lives in the lyrics of Brand New’s Soco Amaretto Lime:

“I’m gonna stay eighteen forever So it can stay like this forever And we’ll never miss a party, ‘Cause we’ll keep them going constantly

And we’ll never have to listen To anyone About anything

Wrapping up phase one…

Okay, it’s just time to get this started as a regular part of our process. As it stands now there were so many different workouts I wanted to write, hesitated, and it was past. So, this is likely going to be a little on the long side, but still good info as we start the season, so be sure you are reading all the way through National Group.

We’ll start with a general wrap up of the first 6 week phase and how we have started. I’ve stated over and over, but I think you are all off to a very impressive start to the season. The second half of the training period of the fall season will be what makes or breaks things from here. You’ve put yourselves in a great position to build off of the first half and really make some big changes, but it’s going to test you over and over for the next 6 weeks. It’s going to challenge how bad you want to reach those goals. Are you willing to push 100% when asked to go fast, because you know 99% isn’t going to get you there? Are you willing to focus on the details until you master the basics? With the understanding that mastering something is not the ability to do it correctly, but your inability to do it incorrectly. Build those habits that will get you to success. Make those Champion’s Choices. It’s time to decide how bad you want it and will yourself to push through the pain now, so you see that break through at the end of the season.

Our goals #WJTEAM #P2MR #P8FR are well under-way and we are climbing to them, and now is the time to keep those right in front of you like a carrot. Avoid that complacency by keeping that focus on those TEAM goals. We need to earn it daily!

Of which, we’ll make that the first pic. Our Sept 24th effort towards the #P2MR goal is below and is a solid start. The more we compete with each other and support each other, the better we are as a TEAM.

Okay, let’s touch base on some workouts here as well. First off some technical work for each of the strokes (non-free). I’m not going to spend a ton of time here, but I want each of you to know and understand those focal points on each. Fly is clearly power into rhythm. The pieces all need to then fall into that from there, but without those two you are lost. Backstroke is that connection of the pull to the rotation of the body. Not only creating more power with this connection, but it will set up the proper timing of the stroke to allow for efficient speed variations of the same stroke technique. Breaststroke is so many things to so many people, but our two focal points are going to be the power in our kicks and from there the insweep used to create the all-important timing of the stroke. While other strokes timing may make it a 1 (arms) + 1 (legs) = 3 equation when you add in the proper timing, for breaststroke it’s more like 1 (arms) + 1 (legs) = 7 equation when you have the right timing. You can take an average breaststroke puller and kicker, but have an impressive swimmer, all because of how it all works together.

Take a quick look through again just to understand those focus points. Keep in mind the more we find those things that not working for us, but against us, the more efficient you become in the water. That efficiency comes in the way of feeling much better at the end of races.

Be ready as well, we will do quite a bit of fast stuff with fins. I like the focus on being prepared to handle that type of speed and of course the increased leg drive to really benefit from fins is a bonus as well. (I included the front of the board for your times on the 100 from a push with fins)

Test sets coming up next. I’m not going to spend quite as much time on those here, but I do want to talk a bit as we completed the first round of the year. We have these 2 which will be our standards, and then we’ll also occasionally do one that is a throw back to my high school swimming days. We’ll do a best average set of 10x100 on 2:00 – break at 5 to collect times, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

First up was the Step Test. We’re focusing in on free or IM on the Step Test now. The goal here is to be able to have a pretty steady descent as you move from HR to HR (again, HR60 refers to 60 beats below max, or roughly 22-24 beats per 10 seconds) and down to the fast 200. I like 5 for us as if our strokes are where they need to be and we swim efficiently, we should be able to do this very well. If we are falling off or struggling, I believe it shows inefficiencies in either strokes, racing, or training. Your first goal is to be as fast as possible at each level, with as even of a swim as possible (100 to 100), at the designated heart rate. Learning how to swim 200’s like that, being efficiently powerful, and numerous other things will help us get better at that, and then the goal is to move the graph to the left at every point through consistent, focused commitment to the training.

Overall assessment is a good starting point. The set and 200’s seem to have been swum really well, but we need to be faster on the end. That’s both because of where we want to be, but also to some degree where we already are now. Next time the board will show circles for improvements and underlines for ties, and we need the board full of circles.

Below you’ll see a spreadsheet that you’ll get a link to on Google sheets. I’ll have the first one filled in, you’ll fill it in from there. I have a master sheet that is linked to each of yours and I’ll get an alert when they are updated, so we can all stay on the same page. The graph on the right shows the first set, and then will compare against that line each time as they are already all set up. We are using an average 100 time, so just divided by 2 and done the math for the full heartrate. Danny was first on the list, so you can see his below. Pretty steady climb overall, and needs to be faster. The main focus would be the big jump in heartrate from the 4th to the 5th swim, but the time not having that same corresponding size jump. Shows a bit of an inefficiency there (although only slight as I have seen many work harder and go slower, there was still an increase in speed here), as we as a similar steapness to the line from 1 to 2. Your refernce line is around a 45 degrees.

Up next was the Challenge 100’s. Short interval, holding stroke. It’s that drive and push to maintain stroke on the end of the 200 all wrapped up in a test set. How much will you be able to drop that interval this year? Again, improved set performance is definitely still possible at this point, but the main goal is physical changes by what you do on a daily basis between now and the next set. Three of you need to start thinking about your next interval as well.

I’ll wrap up the write up for the first phase of training with some shout outs. First and foremost, you need to all understand that you are off to a great start. So my first shout out goes to the entire group, and that is the most important piece by far. We are in a fantastic spot, but the thing is that the chase never stops. We need to be striving for excellence daily. Pushing through to new levels. That’s the opportunity you have opened up for yourselves, the opportunity to work your way through the door of greatness.

AS – is just getting it done, we found a stroke flaw that really stood out finally and not only was she able to change it, but it already seems to be her stroke and showing amazing advancements already, that’s impressive, then add the determination to work herself to the level she wants to be and oh, still swimming fast along the way, big things coming

NC – look out for Nicky, she is just getting the work done day in and day out, if she builds her confidence with things like already hitting her Challenge 100 pace and all of her other sets, and then allows herself to race like that at the end, 😊

KR – consistency? I think this is it. If I am not mistaken, she’s found this needed focus in workouts and is ready to take this great start to new levels. Consistency at this level alone, let alone any gains from here, is going to yield a lot of smiles in the end

AY – making some great stroke changes and finding a way to have some speed when tired, this could be a very fun year indeed

DS – sometimes the first step is learning what you have to learn, then moving forward from there; doing a nice job learning those steps still to take to become the swimmer he wants to be; pedal to the floor

RD – refocused, driven and ready for big things it appears

IH – getting after it daily in workouts and if he is getting ready to race that same way, he is in for some big swims

Okay, I think that will wrap up the first phase of training and on to the next. Time to find some speed!

Great job all. It’s time for all of us to settle in and find that consistency over the next 6 weeks. Recruit trips winding down, tests taken, school trips done, it’s time for us to settle in, be consistent, and roll through this phase even better than the first.

4) "Mo Money Mo Problems," by The Notorious B.I.G. ft./Puff Daddy & Mase

WELCOME BACK. I am refreshed, I have had a nice few days away from pop music, I got that sweet sub-2:30 in LTTP rando, and I'm coming back to this song, which, hey. It's a classic! I have nothing to add to the discussion around this song. This is one of the most enjoyable pop songs ever made, one of the most enjoyable rap songs ever made, people at the peak of their talents figuring out a magical way to rhyme over an incredible beat. Seriously, "I'm Coming Out" is one of the best songs ever made, and this improves on the foundation, and it's just this beautiful, magical place. It's so good. I am incapable of saying anything constructive in regards to this song. They nailed it. I don’t need to tell you how they nailed it because you can hear how they nailed it.

45) "Coco Jamboo," by Mr. President

So my opinion on this song is that I would have rather not listened to it, but a cursory glance of their Wikipedia page shows that this was a #1 single in Sweden. It reigned for five weeks in the fall of 1996, and it was preceded by "Wannabe" and followed by a song from a band called E-Type named "Free Like a Flying Demon." You know what kind of owns? "Free Like a Flying Demon." It's not quite what I wanted "Free Like a Flying Demon" to sound like, I thought Sweden was still willing to make a #1 hit out of the occasional bitchin' metal jam (I'm probably thinking of Norway, those freaks mosh), but this sounds like a decent Depeche Mode outtake.

Enh! I've had worse. Thank you for asking me how your song was! This review was much easier to write with the prompt! I also appreciate the way this dude is passionately drawing in every single breath. He is inhaling with PURPOSE. He feels these feelings so intensely, he has to gulp in all the oxygen he can so he can properly express his feelings. Also at one point he goes "nnnnnn" for seven seconds. This is the ur-R&B dude song.

75) "Can We," by SWV ft./Missy Elliott

The soundtrack for Booty Call has two unforgettable cuts, both in vastly different ways from each other. This is more in step with what I expected from the Booty Call soundtrack, just a smooth song asking if y'all DTF. Not that song that was just straight-up porn, just a song that sounds like the last half hour at a club and a last-ditch effort to make something happen. I like that. Especially after Rome being over-dramatic, I'm way into a song that's just, "I dunno, it's just sex. Y'all wanna do it or no?"

81) "Fix," by BLACKstreet ft./Ol' Dirty Bastard

WHAT IS THIS I LOVE THIS. HELL YEAH. I am so, so appreciative that BLACKstreet was willing to go on this adventure, and that Ol' Dirty was willing to hop on the bus with them. This was pretty amazing, though, hey, I'll cop to being a sucker for rock guitars where there typically aren't rock guitars. Slash did things! Slash toolded around in the studio for ten minutes and did enough amazing things to be featured in the song! This was hella fun, I hope more R&B artists made hard rock jams in 1997. I want to live in a world where I don't just hear Rome a thousand more times, I wanna hear this overtake Rome and his ilk for the definitive '90s R&B song.

Hey! You know how I haven't been that into Europop? You know how I've been enduring these garbage dance songs for the sake of experiencing the odd "Fulton Street" or "Fix?" GUESS WHAT, THIS WHITE GIRL FROM NEW YORK JUST DROPPED CULTURAL APPROPRIATION INTO THE MIX. I know I made fun of "It's Alright, It's OK," but I would listen to a thousand white girl journal entries before I listened to some girl from Brooklyn pretend she's from Hamburg.

7) "Sorry, Blame it on Me," Akon

...Did anyone else notice that Akon released an album in 2017? In this calendar year! I know it's hard to keep track of alll the things that are happening, what with the president yelling about how he can pardon himself and all, but I went to the AZLyrics page to clarify some of the lyrics, to, y'know, make fun of this shitty song where Akon is only passively-aggressively taking the blame ("even though the blame's on you/you can put the blame on me" christ dude either own your shit or don't), but there's an Akon album called Stadium with the number 2017 in parentheses next to it and song titles under it! The songs have lyrics! One song has a Ludacris feature! Oh, man. This is one album I am not going to listen to! (Follow-up: looks like it’s yet to be released. I am sorry for teasing you like this, I know how much you have been looking forward to hearing new Akon.)

Everything about this song is gross and awful and I hate that it exists and I hate how it was brought to existence and I wish I had watched a lyric video instead of the music video because I hate looking at this freeloader's face. In 2007, there were multiple feature-length musical comedies featuring Zac Efron. It's not that we didn't have anyone else that could sing and dance while acting. We just decided to let Zac Efron have a go at it. Also, while I have not seen this film (either original or remake, would much rather see the original), I am so glad it exists. So, so very glad there is room in some subculture for John Travolta in drag and a fat suit.

89) "Bed," J. Holiday

Dipping back into 2007 R&B is weird after so much 1997 R&B because I have to come up with something different to say than "'90s R&B, amirite?" This song, though, it's always been a personal favorite. It's over-the-top, but it never feels silly, settles in this nice groove where it's this ridiculous song about fucking. It's probably a mid-tier '90s R&B song, but this was kind of the best 2007 had to offer; I'm not sure why else I'd remember it if it weren't the among the strongest things R&B had to offer that year. Fun fact! J. Holiday's most recent single is called "After We Fuck." Getting better with age like a fine, horny wine.

90) "Can't Leave 'Em Alone," Ciara ft./50 Cent

This is nice! (many hours pass) Nope, nope, still haven't formed any grander opinion on this song. Ciara whispers prettily, and Fiddy doesn't do anything to make the song less chill. Real quick? Team? Team? Real quick? I don't mean to presume, but I'm pretty sure the niceness of this song means the best song to debut on the Billboard chart the week of 4 August 2007 was "You Can't Stop the Beat." Guys, I know I've had my issues with 2017's music, but that's because it's boring. There's nothing wrong with boring, but the problem ends up being that the songs are just there, they're incredibly average. 2007 hasn't been funky in weeks. It's just been bad. Like, look at next week: you have "Stronger," which is a classic, but then three county dudes and whatever "Hood Figga" is gonna end up being. It's easy to yell at 2017 because it's new and we want it to be better, and we can yell at 1997 because of the occasional dip into horrible Eurodance, but I don't think any of the three years has wasted more of my time with songs that just blandly exist than 2007.

97) "Stranger," Hilary Duff

It's like someone decided to take "Beautiful Liar" and add 100% more of everything. Honestly, if they're gonna follow up "With Love" with this, I should be allowed to make whatever mean joke I made in the "With Love" review. If they're not gonna put any effort into their music, I shouldn't have to put effort into the review. (I think I've used that line in a previous review, so look at that, I'm doing it anyway, probably!)

99) "Online," Brad Paisley

This is one of the best country songs about catfishing in existence, as well as the only country song about the internet version of catfishing. This is a fine companion piece for "High Maintenance Woman," and my headcanon is that the maintenance man is also the main character of this song. I will never not appreciate Brad Paisley playing guitar and dad jokes, I can appreciate this very dad summary of how the internet works, and you KNOW your boy appreciates any song with a tuba section, however brief. It won't keep a cover of a 20-year-old musical closer from being the best 2007 song of the week, but it's a song with some degree of depth (and any degree of sweet, sweet tuba) that we can enjoy, and that's kinda "best-case scenario" territory with 2007 songs.

75) "A Lie," by French Montana ft./The Weeknd & Max B

Like, this is what I mean when I say 2017 is incredibly average. I remember mostly enjoying the two French Montana songs on the chart, but I don't remember anything that happened in these songs. They don't do anything. They just exist, and they're pleasant to listen to, but no one's taking any risks. There's nothing wrong with a B-, B- is still above-average, but my stars, why settle? Does no one want an A? What are we doing here. What was I supposed to hear in this song to make me believe there are only 74 songs currently in existence which best encapsulate the present moment. It's not bad, I just want something to care about.

86) "Jerika," by Jake Paul & Erika Costell ft./Uncle Kade

This is a love song by a man who, every time he has ever seen any banana in his life, will chuckle, point, and say, "Penis." If I could go back in time and stop myself from starting this project, I would not, because my life is better for having "Felton St." and "Bill" and "Get Buck" and "It Ain't Me" in it, but I would give that time machine a long, long look before deciding not to board.

91) "Young Dumb & Broke," by Khalid

Absolutely fuck this song. Fuck this PBR'n'B version of an anthem. Fuck this dude's ironic detachment, fuck this go nowhere track, fuck that dumb Rodney Dangerfield-ass joke in the second verse, fuck whoever told this dude he was complex, and fuck the naked appeal to the #teens. American Teen. Do #teens actually listen to media with "teen" in the title? I mean, they must, they've been making songs with "teen" in the title since before Billboard published charts, but this song isn't for teens as it is for pretentious music writers who want to write thinkpieces about the state of R&B. This stupid song probably got an entire Slate article published about it by now, and he's only 19 for seven more months, and boy, won't it be a drag when he can no longer substitute his age for an identiy. What a fucking bore.

96) "Woman," by Kesha ft./The Dap-Kings Horns

Y'ALL, FUCK YEAH. Like, last week's song was last week's song, and I respect that it needed to be made. But you know what I like? I like when someone shouts about how happy they are to be alive over a saucy horn section, AND GOT DAMN, THIS DELIVERED ON THE PROMISE OF THE TITLE. Everything about this is good and pure and should be enjoyed without reservation and a daily fixture at every karaoke bar and shouted from the top of every mountain simultaneously and goddamnit it's not gonna be on the chart next week, is it. (This is only gonna be #18 on the list. When 2017 is on, it is goddamned ON, and that's what makes enduring the French Montanas and Khalids such a chore, because I know they can do better! They have done better, and frequently!) But man, this song, I am in love with the Scissor Sisters-y breakdown, I am going to buy space on the Jumbotron at a baseball game to propose to that breakdown, this song muthafuckin' rules.

1997 won this week incredibly hard. 2017 put up a good fight at the end, but man, 1997 started strong and never looked back.
