I get using no specific iteration of the TMNT in a crossover and just making yet another new version. After all, the franchise has had many, many different versions at this point, so it's easy to accept that this is simply one more to add to the pile.

But Naruto has... one. Just the one. So when all of a sudden characters are written/shown to have expertise that they shouldn't have at the age they're being depicted, it just ends up feeling weird.

I get that fitting things into the Naruto timeline can be a chore. Do it too early, and Sakura is kinda useless. Do it too late, and Sasuke's off murdering people. And if you try to set it after the series, the power levels are seriously gonna be out of whack.

But breaking the only canon that has ever existed for these characters makes them feel like... not the same characters. I might be the only one who cares about this, but it really took me out of the story, to the point where I couldn't help but focus on it. I don't want to be distracted from page one of a silly ninja crossover comic.

I actively write for Harry Potter, Naruto, Julie and the Phantoms, and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

I can, apparently, be convinced to write for BNHA, Howl's Moving Castle, Star Wars, Spiritfarer, Percy Jackson, and the Inheritance Cycle. There are probably others I'd be willing to explore too, but I've yet to actively write for them.

Sea Dreams - Probably unsurprising, actually. This is a Naruto fic and is the first one in the series. Complete AU beginning with a Uchiha surviving the massacre, who also turns out to be a reincarnated ninja. Uzushio all the way!

Relight These Embers - ATLA. This is a super fun one I got to write that explores Zuko and Azula in a world slightly to the left of canon.

Never Surrender - HP. What if Regulus was sorted into Gryffindor? (This now has a rewritten version! It's completed and updating weekly at the moment.)

Trust In Your Companions - ATLA. Zuko & various animals.

If you've got life, you've got fight - HP. Regulus Black is reincarnated as Draco Malfoy. Needless to say, this changes a lot. But also not much at all.

Yep! It might take a while, but I always do so. Well, aside from some awful ones that it's better off ignoring...

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Honestly, in terms of fanfiction, I don't really do angsty endings! I like my happy endings too much, or maybe my hopeful endings. The idea that, even if things aren't alright now, they might one day be okay.

I reckon the most angsty is probably 'If I could take us back, if I could just do that' (JATP), because there's no resolution at all there. That said, 'dancing on the tightrope (don't cut the wire)' (Naruto) is a little bit angsty too, because there's an element to hopelessness to it that definitely cuts to the quick. But there's also the idea of just... going on anyway, I guess. Then there's two HP fics that are technically angsty as well - 'there is always what comes after' and 'all you can do (is go on)'.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Happiest ending? God, I don't know. But I've narrowed it down to three that have endings I particularly like.

this band is back & it's been years - JATP. Less so for the ending itself, and more so for what the story means to me. There's something about friendships that kind of broke down, and also fell wayside, and reconnecting and finding some new, finding something better, finding something stronger, that appeals to me so very much. Writing this fic absolutely healed something broken within me, I think. And, sure, it'll break again, but I always have this to fall back to.

For similar reasons, though not the exact same, I must also mention 'Let's get the band back together'. (JATP) I think I really found myself realising how I'd grown as a writer while writing this, which was fun, and this is a much softer fic too. There's something about finding a home and finding your people that is just fucking fantastic.

Lastly - 'and then, suddenly, you hear the ocean' (Naruto). For a fic that is cemented in grief and death, the healing and recovery of this fic soothes something within me.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Got heaps back on ff.net back in the day! And I have gotten a fair few things on ao3 too, which sucks heaps. It's not the easiest thing to deal with, but I'm lucky that when it really hits me, I've got some people I can turn to and ask for a much more objective truth. It works, most of the time.

Nope

Eh, not really. It doesn't appeal to me that much, to be honest.

Less stolen as such, but definitely appeared on other websites before - you know the ones that access websites via another platform or whatever? They've probably been scraped or whatever before too, I imagine.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes, which is super exciting! @dragonsampersanddragons has done two fics ('Cover Your Eyes (The Devil Inside)' and 'The Sea Never Looked Back') into French, and 'on to war' (HP) has been translated into Russian.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not anything that was ever finished or published!

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

Lol, I don't have one. Definitely don't care for romance. Love me a good QPR, found family, or friendship though!

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?

Oooh, there's an old story idea I once had called Threads of Magic that I would love to explore. But it also has a lot of hurt associated with it now, so doubt it'll ever happen.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think it's characterisation, probably! If only because I tend to try and always make my characters 3D, and I think that shows up. Sometimes I manage to do some awesome dialogue lines which is always nice, but not always.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I'd do it! Probably comes from the fact I've worked with other languages in the past, and also conlang (god, it's so hard, kudos to anyone who manages it). Occasionally, I might just go 'x said in y' or something. Otherwise (though I've never done it), I'd probably do that thing on ao3 where you can have the formatting so translation shows up when you click/hover over it. It's neat as hell.

I think it was Harry Potter lol. Or maybe Percy Jackson? I wrote original work first, so that's what sticks more I think.

Okay this took way longer than I expected, so no idea who to tag. Anyone can pick it up - and I hope you have fun doing it!

Do you ship any canon ship, in manga/anime? I can't bring myself to ship or even support like 95% of canon ships in manga, they're just... very bland. The dynamics are boring most of the time, there's always some mysoginistic element going on (even in shojo mangas. Why can't the heroine physically save the male love interest for once :/ w h y), and the parties included most of the time have way better chemistry with their same-sex "best friend" (I'm talking about canon straight ships).

Depends on what kind of stories you're reading, how good the author is at setting up and committing to their romance, and how you even define what's 'canon' at all really. Cause the only 'canon' I care about is whether a pair has an interesting canon dynamic (meaning they're a core part of or the focus of the story already) that piques my interest and keeps me invested in their story. To see how they turn out. Otherwise I usually don't 'ship' if their relationship has no focus/development or if the story isn't even about the pair's journey together. Cause not all stories even have romance, or are even structured in a way for a mutual confession at the very final chapter either - cause some, like in Mob, subvert that 'expectation' with no canon couples anyway. So it really depends.

Most shoujos (with clearly advertised romance) that spend their real-estate building a 'main' pairing (unless there's triangles for more twists and drama to keep readers unsure and guessing) usually end up together as....the story properly tells, cause that's literally what those stories are about. Ex: like in Skip Beat, the slowest of the slow burns where the main paring dances around each other indefinitely - some might not consider them technically 'canon' if they haven't openly confessed yet, but if the story is literally about them navigating their developing relationship and growing as people, then...by definition that's what's canon. BLs that focus on a 'main' pairing and properly develop them as advertised are the same. (Oh, and I've read some 'bad' shoujos where the author tried to appeal to both sides of the love 'triangle' but it just turned into a wasted mess that pleased no one. So do yourself a favor and don’t read past the first half of Vampire Knight; ohh what a wtf that became.) More 'harem' type stories with a huge cast of 'suitors' usually end up favoring one pair over another as the story progresses...with extremely obvious hints from the author about where their story's going. Ouran Host Club and Fruits Basket turned out like this, where you could tell who was going to be 'endgame' based on how the drama unfolded, and sure enough, the main 'ship' became a satisfying established item just as I hoped. The authors played their cards right and I have no complaints!

In stories like shonens where romance is not the main focus, but more a side thing or B plot, I can say that fma is probably the most satisfying that developed it naturally (without any bs) over the course of the story, and is probably the only ‘married with kids’ ending that felt genuinely deserved. (So I cheered when Ed/Winry finally became an established item!) Say for Bleach I actually did not have a problem with Orihime, since the story spent several arcs developing her side and how the feelings were mutual, so that becoming endgame was not a surprise to me at all; I was fine with it (even tho I had dropped the manga much earlier for other reasons.) Let’s see...other stories like Inuyasha and Full Metal Panic I was on board with their main pairings too. So for the most part, yes, if authors do it well (with proper setup and payoff) then I have no problem supporting their main het couples.

The only time it’s really a problem to me is when it’s rushed and feels like it comes out of nowhere (Kny, Naruto), or say...when the author heavily teases it the entire story but never commits (aaaah Soul Eater was so close!) Some leave it as a more open-ended thing (Kekkaishi) and that’s ok. Others completely sever it and leave it tragically hollow, unaddressed, and unsatisfying (Blade of the Immortal, damn wtf that felt almost cruel to simply part ways forever.) Others end up with no pairings at all if the story never needed them (or romance) to tell their messages (ex: orv, a korean novel which isn’t a manga or japanese, but it refreshingly had no romance at all despite the many teases going both m&f ways for the mc.) Edit: and also who could forget Blue Flag, where instead of the ‘main’ m/f pair, the mc chose his male best friend for a m/m ending instead!

So...what can I say? (Read more mangas beyond shonens not advertised as romance??) Cause most of the mangas I have read with properly advertised romance between their main ‘canon’ pairs turned out just fine to me - and it’s more of an outlier where they turn out ‘bad,’ but that’s also due to poor planning or rushed endings on the author’s part. Also if the (often male) author knows they don’t do romance well, then it’s preferable they don’t add it in over trying to shoehorn in something unsuitable last-minute. But for the most part, I’m here for the ride, and if I don’t like where the canon story is going, regardless of whether it even has ships or not - cause that’s more a secondary thing, then I’ll drop it. (But I also think...if an unfinished story’s not about a het pair at its core, then it’s presumptuous for readers to assume they’ll become ‘canon’ at all...if canon itself doesn’t even care about them - so yes I’m talking about bnha here, where nothing’s confirmed ‘canon’ yet, but it’s obvious even to Japanese readers what m/m relationship already represents the canon heart of the story.)

Happy B-Day, Kabuto! In honor of this (leaped) day, I thought I might do a list of Early Kabuto Head canons that floated around the internet when he was just introduced. So much has changed in the last...20...years.

Kabuto with pink hair. In the very first fanart I saw of him, before there was any official color, people gave him really light pink, or sometimes blond, hair. Healer = pink, I guess?

Ninja info cards are common place. No one makes a comment when he pulls them out, or seems surprised that someone would be keeping tabs on the competition. Always wondered if there was a dropped card game because they never came back.

He really didn't know how to deal with Sound nins. I've always thought that a guy able to go toe-to-toe with Kakashi and re-map his nerves in 30 seconds probably wouldn't have problems with basic vertigo, but we didn't even know he was a spy until the end of the second exam! And even then, he insisted that the Sound-nin's threw him for a loop.

He really was a nice guy! What? Before we got the Orochimaru reveal, he seemed genuinely helpful to Naruto and co. And poor Naruto looked so sad when Kabuto dropped out! Kid took the apparent face-heel turn pretty well, all things considered.

Kabuto's eye power/berserker energy. They never really explained how he was able to freeze those random ninja. Looking back, it was probably some kind of 'killing aura', but he never uses it again, nor does anyone else that I remember. I always thought that this + Oro's comment about Kabu's 'old blood' coming to the fore hinted that he was a secret berserker that might snap or fall into blood-lust. But all his later powers build upon his abilities as a medic, rather than any hidden spy/eye powers.

Healing abilities. (not technically a headcanon) Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Kabuto is the first character we see using healing jitsu's. And until near the very end, I'm pretty sure he's the only male healer. I always thought it was interesting that it's such a gendered profession, yet its introduction is with the only male and only evil healer.

Kabuto's dad as Orochimaru's lead scientist. Does any one remember Kabuto's team leader/dad? He shows up in like...one panel, and might be the same guy who was mentioned as leader of the retrieval ninja who taught Kabuto to 'play with corpses'. For a while, there was a theory that one of Oro's background scientists in the anime was the same guy, but neither character ever got any depth or explanation.

Kabuto planned on betraying Orochimaru. Several points throughout the series there are hints that Kabuto finds his master's tendencies disturbing, to the extent that Oro seems to enjoy toying with his loyalty and almost expected the younger man to go through with his plan to kill Sasuke. Yet at no point does Kabuto actually go against his master's wishes. Unless...

Kabuto revealed himself intentionally. Surely you don't go to all the trouble of setting up a whole room of doppelgangers just to not kill your target. Unless you were intentionally staging a scene where you had the 'excuse' not only to save the kid, but also alert the authorities and give yourself an air-tight alibi for needing to pull back from your undercover mission. Sounds like exactly what a double agent might do...but no, he's actually Orochimaru's most fanatical servant, and never did a thing against him.

But, he's a nice guy, really! He saved Hinita. And then knocked out everyone in a non-lethal way. C'mon guys, he's totally a secret good guy! Or maybe had some more complicated plan. Look at those glasses. You know he's gotta be smart! Really!

There's probably a ton more early Naruto Kabu head canons that I'm forgetting. Maybe you remember ones I've forgot. (Please remind me) But it's fun looking back a how much the character has changed. Just imagine how different he could have been if any of these had turned out true.

But I guess he got his good ending either way! Happy B-Day, Kabuto!

Rabbit Dad Theory: A Weapon to Surpass Dad for One

okay so. I know that the theory about local big bad of the series being the protagonist’s father , but I’m pretty sure the real reason that midoriya’s dad hasn’t shown up in the plot is because he’s a rabbit

Part 1: Rabbit Motifs

To get this party started properly, let’s begin with a bunch of the rabbit symbolism regarding Midoriya himself.

The most notable of which being that his hero costume is literally him dressing up as a rabbit

His freckles are even stylized to look like little rabbit whiskers. fuckin naruto kinnie

It bleeds into his fighting style too

Two big innovations he has that aren’t based on previous users of one for all

are hopping from place to place

and his big, rabbit-like kicks.

(which would also go a ways to explain why the plot thought Midoriya having legs was a big deal)

A lot of this goes into his characterization as well. The most notable bit being how much the first chapter of bnha parallels the story of the moon rabbit.

Anyway, the story goes that a rabbit, along with a bunch of other animals (it varies depending on region) decided to gather food for the full moon as an offering, believing that the best one will bring a reward from the gods.

All of the animals bring plentiful amounts of food, sans the rabbit, who brings only grass.

Eventually, a starving old man comes along.

The other animals have food to give him, but refuse to do so to meet their own ends.

The rabbit, sympathizing with the old man,throws itself into a fire he was kindling so that he can be fed.

The old man, touched by the rabbit’s actions, reveals himself to be a god and saves it.

In honor of the rabbits deeds, the god imprints his image on the moon, bestowing special gifts to him.

Along with this there are a number of other mild rabbity traits tho.

Such as his skittishness.

Not to mention his general resourcefulness.

The show regularly conflates Midoriya being himself with him looking and acting more and more like a rabbit. This isn’t too hard to understand from a Doylist perspective; Horikoshi blatantly just likes bunnies. (I mean just look at Miruko)

What’s interesting here is that we’ve never been given an in-universe explanation for why midoriya himself identifies this way. In a series that is otherwise really invested in dissecting the ideal versions of themselves that characters want to live up to, the show doesn’t provide any justification for a character motif Midoriya has that is almost as present as all might himself.

Judging from the title of this post, you can probably guess what my reasoning for this choice is.

**Part 2: Hisashi’s Quirk **

“But snake,” you may be asking yourself, “We already know what Hisashi Midoriya’s quirk is. He breathes fire.”

This is true. he probably does. Consider what we know in-universe, though.

Characters with heteromorphic quirks don’t have their physical attributes listed as a part of their quirks if they have a secondary characteristic.

Tokoyami is the most obvious example. He’s a bird person, but his quirk is dark shadow. The fact that he’s a bird man goes unmentioned because as far as anyone is concerned, the shadow monster is his power.

Characters like Spinner have their animal attributes listed as quirks, but that’s only because he can’t do anything a gecko wouldn’t. If he didn’t make his lizard powers his quirk he’d have nothing to put.

If Midoriya’s dad happened to be, say, a rabbit that could breathe fire, the fire quirk would be listed while the rabbit bit went unstated. In fact, in a roundabout way, the fire quirk makes rabbit dad even more plausible.

You see, most of the animal character designs in bnha are actually recycled from an old series horikoshi did called oumagadoki zoo. Mind you this isn’t a knock at horikoshi or anything. A lot of mangaka do this sort of thing. I’m mostly bringing it up because one of the main characters is a rabbit called Shiina

and one of the early gags in the series is him smoking a carrot like a cigar.

This would be very easy to translate to my hero academia’s setting if said character happened to breathe fire.

I should also say for those keeping score at home that I don’t necessarily think Hizashi is a Shiina expy specifically (tbh I kinda imagine him being more like a fluffy spike spiegel). At most I think it’s probably just some design motifs and some VERY loose plot points.

There is also the somewhat mild rebuttal of Midoriya never attempting to do anything rabbit-like while trying to see if he had a quirk, but I think that’s self explanatory. If Izuku was a rabbit he’d notice right away, so of course he didn’t bother checking.

**Part 3: Why He’s Absent **

Of course, another big question that might be on your mind is why he’s not present if that’s the simple truth of his identity. Why have him fail to show himself for what has now been 300 chapters?

I can think of two simple reasons:

1) It’s really funny

Just fuckin. The Mystique of it all. You can’t tell fans a character is going to show up eventually and fail to have them appear without piquing someone’s interest. It’s bound to make fans speculate, especially with the canon dabi twist hanging in the air. Years to imagine what his presence might entail if it was something big enough to be worth planning ahead for.

And then. Boom. Bunny.

Fucking. Hysterical.

2) The themes. Oh god the themes

You might have noticed by now but Horikoshi has a tendency of making like. The Shounen Jump equivalent to that rpg character you make as a joke that then has like. an undeniably tragic life when you’re actually forced to tackle with the implications of your own character building.

I would not be surprised if the Midoriyas ended up falling into that category.

So let’s get into that.

One of the big things that my hero academia attempts to tackle is the concept of normalcy.

Mostly how it’s kinda bullshit and, in many cases, outright harmful.

What makes this bit interesting within the context of Midoriya family is Izuku’s sort of. Artificial Plainness.

He is a character deliberately designed to look as normal as possible. The key word there is look. Basically anyone who’s been following the series long enough to be reading this post knows that the kid often struggles to keep his head down

which also makes it interesting that the only two scenes where Midoriya wears his rabbit cowl are scenes where he is actively questioning the status quo.

Methinks there is some symbolism here.

Which I guess brings us back to square one.

At the end of the day, the concept of Midoriya’s dad being a rabbit is funny because it’s so unexpected. Without him around, the Midoriyas look like a normal family.

But that’s also the kicker.

A lot of people are quick to call Izuku’s dad an absentee father, but technically speaking, we don’t quite know that yet. We’ve only been in a position where we don’t see him as the audience.

And, well, when your kid is being bullied for something as banal as being quirkless, you might not want to give society more ammunition to use against him.

It wouldn’t strike me as strange if he just avoided being seen in public with his son to keep him safe in his own way.

They say that the nail that sticks out gets hammered down the most. Under those circumstances, it’s not too hard to understand why the loosest nail might just feel safer wriggling out of the wood altogether.

Naruto/HP just because I see a lot of them floating around and want to know what your take would be!

Okay! I wrote some of this Friday night, then my brain stalled and I hit the save draft button..... so this might be..... confused?

If we went with a fusion AU (Naruto characters are born into the HP world and just exist at Hogwarts, or vice versa), then I’d just end up yelling about HCs for what house people should be in, and I don’t think the Golden Trio would be very compelling as ninja. So! We are going to try and make a proper crossover, with characters from one canon entering the world of the other canon. 

There’s two common ways to do this: Harry-focused fics, where he stumbles into ninjaland (which SHOULD happen just because Harry Potter doesn’t have normal Saturday afternoons, but it’s usually because he’s the Chosen One and/or Master of Death), or your favorite ninja go to Hogwarts as security detail. Personally I’ve really liked this second approach since I was a teenager, so we’re going with that one!

Since it’s “my favorite ninja go to Hogwarts” it has to be.... it has to be the Akatsuki, somehow. From an outsider (Dumbledorean) POV, Akatsuki might even seem more morally just than going to a village, since their goal is technically to end war. I’m imagining it’s an ongoing mission slated to potentially take years and the Akatsuki switch out every few weeks/months so they can also do actual ninja shit. 

Dumbledore: You will be charged with protecting the student body and, if possible, the actual castle itself. Here is a photo of a student named Harry Potter. Konan: Are we to prioritize this one?  Dumbledore: No, no, all students are equally important.  Konan: Then why give me this? Dumbledore: It’s better if you just know about him now rather than after he’s already flung himself at danger. :)

I’m thinking Akatsuki would be hired for PoA, because there’s an escaped criminal and blah blah blah. (The above conversation would then not happen exactly as written, because Dumbledore would explain Harry is the most likely target.) The actual story would not be particularly plot heavy, and mostly just be a series of slapstick moments. Ongoing jokes:

The ninja standard of normal and the wizard standard of normal and real-world standards of what’s normal are so different that characters get hilarious reactions out of each other. 

Deidara flying around on a clay bird which then explodes? Wizards are like, “oh, yeah, a teenager’s art project, makes sense.” Walking up walls? What the fuck? 

Meanwhile Harry is like “I can talk to snakes” and that’s not weird for ninja at all. It’s not common to talk to animals, but it’s definitely within the realm of possibility. Then Harry disarms someone with expelliarmus and what the fuck kind of hack move is that?

I want there to be crossover crackships and I want. I want Hidan and Remus to hook up. Hidan is very into fucking a werewolf and Remus is deeply embarrassed he keeps going back to him. 

The problem with Hidan is that he’s like that, but also he is good looking. 

Hidan: No, but like. Turning into an unstoppable killing machine-- Remus: Which I don’t like doing-- Hidan: But like, it’s sort of hot? Remus: (sigh) You’re a moron.  Remus: I guess I have to sleep with you. :/

Deidara (and maybe Itachi if wee time it right) is also young enough he could potentially get with one of the students, if this story goes beyong PoA into later years. The first thing that comes to mind is “Hermione does something particularly cutthroat and Deidara has a horrible oh no she’s hot moment,” after years of Hermione and Deidara arguing. I don’t actually like them as a long-term couple but maybe as a “I keep making out with them and I don’t know why??” mood. 

I wrote this out and then remembered Hermione’s parents are dentists. So many potential teeth jokes with Deidara. 

Hermione: You have so many teeth and YOU NEED TO BE GETTING BIANNUAL CHECK UPS, OH MY GOD.  Deidara: Uh, you try and find someone who’ll look at hand teeth-- Hermione, several months later: Here’s the address of my parents’ practice. They think mouth hands are normal for wizards. Do not correct them. 

I don’t want the plot of either canon affected too much (because then thinking hard), so Deidara just shows up with a new guy one day

Deidara: Whatcha up to? Harry: We’re going to ride invisible flying skeleton horses into London and then break into a government building because I had a dreamvision.  Deidara: Rad. I’ll make my own skeleton horse.  Harry: Where’s Sasori? Deidara: Oh yeah, he died. This is Tobi.  Harry: ??? Tobi: (screams as a thestral bites him)

Tobi wrecks so many prophecies in the department of mysteries.

I’m not sure I have a ‘current fandom’ since I live for, like, everything at once, but maybe technically Naruto would be it?

In that case (again, no offense to anyone - and removing the ‘I wish I could get behind’ part ‘cause I do not), NaruSasu. I just...don’t get it? At all? Maybe it’s the ‘what could have been’s or whatever, but when you just take the series at face value, that relationship is...really icky, at least to me, and that’s putting it lightly. It’s so damn unhealthy, especially for poor Naruto. They were never even friends, Sasuke always treated him like shit, and yet...?! *throws hands at half+ of OG series and virtually all of Shippuden* IDK, man. Something’s weird there, and I don’t like it. Can’t support that. Naruto deserves better, damn it. (*casually links her Naruto AU fic where he DOES get better (in more ways than one), TYVM*)

20. Any ships (in your current fandom) which you surprised yourself by liking?

Going with Naruto again, so. Hmm... I guess maybe Kankuro/Tenten? I didn’t even know that was a ship until a friend showed me a really good fic, and I was hooked! lol.

Another might be KakaObi, but only in AUs where Obito survives the cave in and gets out with Kakashi and Rin and recovers, continuing to be the sweetheart he is instead of the ass he turned out to be in canon. Because he, too, deserved better, damn it!

Another is one I might have made up, not sure (mostly in the context of my Naruto AU, NGL), lol: Karin/Shikamaru! It makes sense and there are lots of compelling reasons when you break it down! You know, 'cause Shikamaru would need (or probs at least prefer) someone on his smarts level, and she's a genius, too, just in a different way. And once she mellows out, Karin's really cool, and (in my AU) she grows to eventually adore Naruto (actually fights to defend/protect him in the Pein arc!), and anyone who loves Naruto is good in Shikamaru's book! lol. Plus, she can tell him when he has his genius brain twisted in too many directions, tell him he's being an idiot and help him figure things out in her different way. lol. IDK, I like it!

30. What inspires you to write?

I just...love writing?? I’ve wanted to be an author since I was 8-9 years old, started writing when I was 11, and I’ve been writing ever since! I’m 27 now! I’ve had a few dry spells, ofc, but I always end up coming back! I just feel like writing is in my blood (partly because, I like to joke, my last name is the title of one of Shakespeare’s plays, haha)!

Pretty much anything can inspire me to write, though. I’ll see a pretty flower and be like “OOH, that flower could feature perfectly in this chapter in this way!” and then write 1k about that! lol. Or I could read a review of one of my new chapters and end up thinking of something I’d never considered before and then write almost 3k on that alone (looking at you, middle section of Ch 6 of my Naruto AU, lol)!

Basically, if it sparks joy, I’m gonna write something! X’D

31. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?

Nicest?? Hmm... I mean, I’ve had a lot of things said about my writing... Not sure I can really narrow it down? lol.

I guess the nicest things I’ve ever been told are when I make people cry (espec multiple times!) and actually feel the emotions the characters are feeling, that the characters and their development feel so real that it’s like they’re real people instead of fictional/they’re written so much better than the creator himself wrote them. (Been getting those a lot on my Naruto AU, actually. lol.)

32. Do you listen to music when you write or does music inspire you? If so, which band or genre of music does it for you?

I tend to prefer silence while I write, but sometimes, my house is loud and people keep breaking my concentration (house of 5, lots of animals, not the quietest, lol), I sometimes listen to music. I usually prefer instrumental, and then usually Naruto or Wolf’s Rain (sometimes Princess Tutu, too) instrumental tracks. The Naruto one I like best also has rain sounds mixed in, which is great because I love the sound of rain! Woo! (Here’s a link to that one if anyone else wants in on this! ;))

39. What is your greatest strength as a writer?

Emotions and getting into the nitty-gritty stuff therein. As an extremely visual, emotional writer, I’ve always been able to feel the emotions of the characters pretty much exactly how they’re feeling it in the moment and then put it on paper. I also make people cry a lot with my writing and get them to feel what the characters do, so that’s awesome! It’s always my goal to get my readers to feel things because then I feel like they’ve really connected with the story and characters I’ve written!

40. What do you struggle the most with in your writing?

Transitions are dicks. Sometimes I struggle ‘cause it’s been, like, two seconds or five hours, and I don’t know how to show that, lol. If I can, espec with the last one, I just fade to black. lol.

Also, sometimes I feel like I use the same sentence structure a lot, mostly the ‘..., but...’ format (at least lately). It’s really annoying, and I worry my readers notice and get annoyed/think I suck because of it. lol.

I don’t really read Naruto fanfic too much anymore, so like...I guess, technically, another main fandom of mine right now is Fruits Basket, so: without a doubt, @kyosohmastan ! They’re my absolute favorite Fruits Basket fanfic author! Everyone’s so in character, the writing is so sweet and feelsy, steamy when it needs to be, and I really love the writing itself - it’s just so well done and beautiful and I die happily when they post a new fic or chapter? Ahhh! Plus, they’re just so nice and talented in so many ways, we have the same opinions on certain things (like Kakeru Manabe is Too Much(TM) for us, haha, no offense to those who like him! lol.), and I just really, really feel blessed to know and read their fics! Love them so! <3

44. What ship do you feel needs more attention?

I’m not sure which ship this is talking about? Hmm... But a ship I definitely think (have always thought) needs more attention is Kirito/Lisbeth from Sword Art Online! It’s so slept on, and that is a damn fucking shame because they’re so healthy and sweet and have so much more amazing potential than they’re given credit for (way freaking more than the actual canon couple, just sayin’, no offense to anyone who likes the pairing)! I have written a good few metas (and a fanfic) on the subject (some/most of which are on my Lisbeth RP blog, actually, lol)! If anyone wants to discuss/RP/anything involving this ship, please let me know! Would love it!

45. What is your all time favourite fanfic?

I’m not sure I have a favorite fic. But one that I always come back to (all of her (mostly G1) My Little Pony fics, actually - first found them when I was, like, 12, and have kept rereading over and over through the years, haha) is A Mother in Her Eyes by LoveLikeElena on FFN. It takes place in the author’s own MLP universe, but I love said universe so much, and her takes on the characters are amazing and so sweet! I love her look at the serious subjects that follow the characters through her ongong MLP series! <3

51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!

Fanfic readers have become really, really lazy. No one reviews anymore, maybe leave a kudos here and there if you’re lucky (I have a major love-hate (more hate) relationship with kudos...), and it’s so, so, so discouraging to us writers! I wish they knew how it felt, to be honest, espec the ones you know are reading, but just...don’t comment. It’s ridiculously disheartening to work so hard on something for days, weeks, even months or years on something, only to get basically nothing in return. It’s like posting into the void, and it sucks ass. It’s part of what made me quit writing for a good few years, actually, and I’m so sad to see that it’s still a thing. I comment on everything I read because I know how it feels and how much it hurt! It hurts like hell, especially because I remember how it used to be just 6-8 years ago when everyone commented! I desperately pray the fanfic/content consuming world fixes that really soon or we might lose some really amazing writers! Please, even an emoji or keyboard smash! I don’t care, I’ll take anything (and I know I’m not the only one)! <3

Are you staying home from work/school?

I am in grad school right now and I'm attending classes online (sigh). I also work part time so I guess I'm staying home form both work and school?

If you’re staying home, who’s there with you?

A bunch of my friends who'd have otherwise been alone in their homes are staying with my roommate and I. So basically we're 5 people in an apartment meant for 3 people, with just a single bathroom. It's inconvenient but we're all mindful of each other so it's not so bad. It keeps the loneliness at bay and feels homey, but it does get suffocating sometimes.

What movies have you watched recently?

I've been rewatching comfort movies like Jerry Maguire, Maid in Manhattan, Forrest Gump and Begin Again. I also watched an anime movie called Your Name, which had some Murakami vibes and was pretty cool!

What shows are you watching?

I started watching Sex Education two days ago and just binge watched it. The music is crazy good and the plot is oddly endearing. I'm also watching The Office and Naruto Shippuden.

Are you a homebody?

At this stage in my life, yes, very much. Grad school took over my life so the most I had the time for was a bunch of people hanging out on friday once a month and getting drunk and crying about life. But a year ago when I was working and financially independent I used to go out every other week, treks every month etc. I miss the trekking so much it hurts.

An event you were looking forward to but got cancelled?

I kind of love both the classes I'm taking now. Even though they aren't technically cancelled and they've just moved online, I really miss the actual physical class and the experience it gives. My professors are amazing too! I wish I could have had in person classes 😭

What music are you listening to?

Pop, mostly, like Taylor Swift(reputation ftw), Charlie Puth and a bit of Amy Shark, Amy Winehouse, and recently after watching Sex Education I've loved quite a few tracks by Ezra Furman and Chip Taylor. Can I sleep in your brain is an absolute heartbreaker. Others I've loved are F**k all the perfect people and On the Radio. The series soundtrack is too amazingly good.

What are you reading?

I'm reading this novel called The Woman In the Window by A.J. Finn. It's a thriller and it's been so far so good. I've also been reading a LOT of fanfiction (KakaSaku and NaruHina mainly) and a big shoutout to the fandom for giving out such brilliant content. We can never thank you enough. You guys make the world more beautiful one word at a time, fixing canon and making it better ♥️

What are you doing for self-care?

Like I mentioned earlier, there are entirely to many people in my apartment right now and it gets suffocating really quickly. I have a morning routine that I never compromise on, I make myself a cup of streaming hot coffee and sit in the front of my apartment (there's a bunch of plants and benches there) and enjoy the Sun and the butterflies in the flowers. I also read sometimes. This uninterrupted hour really helps me center myself and be more mindful of the people staying with me. I was a consummate introvert but I have come to realise the importance of having people around me. So I try to take people as they are, boost up their good points and try to let go of the bad.

10. Which was your favorite trial from THH?

I think that the 5/6th trial is an obvious one!It was something built up throughout the game (and it gets a bit ridiculoushow many times we hear about “MukuroIkusaba, the 16th student, hidden somewhere in this school. The one theycall the "ultimate despair."” It put’s Naegi’s and Kirigiri’slives on the line, with Naegi ultimately getting chopped off because he got soclose to the truth that the trial was a farce. And then saved, because of luck?He did a good deed and Alter Ego saved him for it? I guess Kirigiri’s optionwas more of a dream ending than anything canon, anyways, so it doesn’t matter.I remember how hyped I was, because for once no one was actually technicallyblackened… no one actually killed anyone since Sakura’s dying wish moved themthat much. I’m still not really fond of some things, like Hagakure thinkingKirigiri was a ghost in the 5th trial? And I have a few otherthings, like how they all decide Naegi was guilty in the first place. Kirigiriwas pushing them to that conclusion so she could show the trial was a farce inthe first place, and she wasn’t expecting the mastermind to cut the trial shortand lie about who killed Mukuro. I still kind of feel pretty bad about thatpart in particular, although she’s clearly super angry it turned out that way,she really didn’t want Naegi to be voted the blackened. The 6thtrial, though, I really liked the reveal of Junko, not even being the “Junko”they met, and how her face was covered in every picture… As a person whostarted off with the anime, I didn’t exactly have time to catch that particulardetail (I should rewatch it sometime honestly, see how much info was reallyleft out). The world being in an apocalypse… a little bit less exciting I guessthan the Junko reveal. And Naegi being proclaimed the Ultimate Hope was cheesy,but kind of expected and in that moment, it was empowering!

(Although it was hard not to say Sakura’s trial for thisquestion, simply because gosh I LOVE Sakura)

11. Which was your favorite trial from SDR2?

I flipflop between trials five and six, honestly XD I’llchoose the 5th Trial though for now! Trial 5 had my top threecharacters playing really important roles, and it made me appreciate Komaedaand Nanami. I was touched Nanami wasn’t really fighting the fact she wasblackened and there was a mystery to her and Komaeda that is unresolved, andeverything about the trial was a rollercoaster of emotions XD This is great forHinata’s character, as well, as he actually is able to understand Komaeda’splan. The trial breaks my heart in how cruel it was to all of the characters,Komaeda dying horrifically through a plan he made himself, and Nanami, a personso against the killing game, ended up killing someone unknowingly… and Hinatahad been so close to Nanami, and probably the closest person to Komaeda on theisland, that it’s hard not to feel bad for him, too, for his losses. Not to saythe others who died were less, just that they weren’t as close to him. And thenof ourse, the actual plan was chaoticgenius. That was a really wild ride of a trial!

12. Which was your favorite trial from V3?

The only one that really held my interest in a more positiveway was probably the fourth one! Because the rules of the virtual world meantthe creators didn’t have to defy actual laws of physics and, well, commonsense, it actually makes sense.Mostly. The one thing that I guess doesn’t is where Kokichi got the flashbacklight? Anything to do with Kokichi leads to plotholes in the story, I swear… Thatand Miu’s partnership with him is ??? Still, I found it to be an emotionaltrial because… it was really not Gonta’s fault even when it was… I really likedhim, he was really sweet.

But yeah, this trial is the only one that I’d say was a goodmurder case in V3, with the others kind of just working through chance? Pureluck? Idk, they were just so weird…

38. Which character doyou feel is too popular amongst the fans, in your opinion?

Ouma… and look, I really don’t hate him at all, but thereasons people say they like him don’tmatch up. “He’s a complex character!” No, he really isn’t… the creators of thegame explained next to nothing about him and his past. Any bit of complexity isprojected thoughts on his character. My prime example is when someone who knowsJapanese had said that Spike Chunsoft had gave a hint that Ouma hatesmurder/killing, which the translators of the game “removed,” when it waseventually proven by native Japanese speakers that there was no suchcomplicated connotation. So everyone to this day keeps spreading this rumoraround that Ouma hates murder/killing as if it was an integral part of his character.

And my honest thoughts on why people like Ouma is… becausehe likes guys and is dismissed by his classmates. He has a crush on Saihara,clearly, and might have had crushes on Rantarou and Momota. His continueddismissal by Saihara and the others serve as the base for people to project their story on Ouma, with them addingmeaning to him to make him out to be a more complex character. They willed him to be important. They ignoredthe plotholes he creates by having knowledge of things we don’t know why heknows, or having a flashback light from a room a keycard opened, which we nevergo to see where that was, or writing a complete script for Momota for the trialin the three hours he had left to live… This isn’t a complex character- this isthe creators of the game making a decision not to explain important details becausethey can get away with it, as he is a liar. The problem with a liar is that younever really know him at all. You canonly guess.

What I dislike about Ouma is the fact that people arepolicing that he is a complex character based on, well, not that much. He doesn’tgive that much, so they make up things to make him seem more complex than heis. The reasons to like him should be his personality, how silly he is, thefact that he’s a great actor… and it can be that you think you can relate tohim. But just in general, I just don’t like the hype around Ouma and peopleputting their noses up at others who have differentinterpretations of Ouma.

42.  How do you feel about the Danganronpafandom as a whole?

The Danganronpa fandom as a whole… it’s done me a lot ofgood, even with all the bad it’s done, too. Through this fandom, I came out ofmy shell. I’ve never been confident enough to write for a fandom and post it. Ihad, once, when I was in middle school, but with a fandom as large as Naruto,the work got drowned out and it wasn’t all that good, honestly, so I nevertried again XD I absolutely would never have created fanart for the fandom,either XD It was rough in the beginning, but I found my artstyle!

But most importantly of all, I’ve met some really incrediblepeople! It’s because of these friendships I’ve made that I got the courage todo more. I could write, I could draw, I could create pixel art, I couldanimate, I could run events and participate in them, I could become a part of azine, and I could mod a zine… All ofthese things I never would have had the courage to do alone. And even outsideof fandom, they would support me, validate my frustrations, congratulate me onmy victories, listen to me, laugh with me…

I met some important people who I’ll never forget. I havefriends who I hope will stick around for long past the fandom. And well, I foundsomeone I actually really love through this fandom as well ^^ (he runs eventswith me on the Hinaegi blog

I’ll admit, my active participationin the fandom is pretty weak these days with me getting sucked into playingPokemon in my free time instead… but Danganronpa’s left its mark. Even with allthe bad of fandom “discourse,” fandom drama, and some really rude people onsome rare occasions, it was worth it to have found the confidence and supportthat I did!

The fandom is far from dead, rude people may still exist,but at least at the moment, I’m pretty comfortable where I am in it with the otherpeople that have made my stay a welcome one!

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day One Hundred Twenty-Three: Money ] [ Uchiha Sasuke, Hyūga Hinata ] [ SasuHina ] [ Verse: A Light Amongst Shadows ] [ AO3 Link ]

In all technicality...money’s never really been an issue.

Upon the death of his clansmen, every spare ryō - by some miracle, given Konoha’s track record - from those called Uchiha was gathered and put into a trust fund along with the land bound to the clan. For all his expenses, Sasuke was given adequate funds to cover them...though he was hardly a costly upkeep.

Once he started missions, the revenue from them - not much, given their ranks - was kept as pocket money. Frugal and careful with everything allotted to him, Sasuke never wanted for anything...at least, when it came to money, and what it could buy.

Upon his defection, it was Orochimaru who handled his finances. Or rather, ensured the Uchiha had whatever he needed. Food, clothing, shinobi supplies...Sasuke asked for little. Only what he needed. He wasn’t under the sannin’s tutelage to be bought and paid for. Simply to learn, grow stronger...and then take his leave. And once Orochimaru served his purpose, Sasuke took what he felt fair from the snake’s coffers before heading out with Hebi to find Itachi.

Madara, as he called himself, provided whatever supplies necessary while Taka flew under his banner. Then the war began...and once it was all said and done - even his final battle with Naruto - Sasuke made what would be his last pitstop back to Konoha for quite some time. The fund remained in place, and he took a small share of it in preparation to travel, planning to earn what he needed on the road.

But he wasn’t gone for long. Not nearly as long as he’d thought, at any rate. Itachi’s revival meant having a new priority. Which, in tandem, meant being back in Konoha. Something that took...adjusting upon his final return.

At least among the growing list of things he had to worry about...money wasn’t one of them.

Hinata, on the other hand...has had a slightly different story.

True, her clan is arguably the richest within Konoha’s walls. And yes, their haughty, better-than-you attitude often means displaying such wealth when they find it necessary (or...unnecessary). But with Hiashi’s growing disdain for his older daughter came a stinginess in his ryō spent upon her.

Not that he left her lacking, per se. She was still dressed well: he couldn’t have a Hyūga dressing like a pauper, especially his own daughter, no matter their strained bond. Nor was she skimped in her meals, or her supplies. But anything extraneous - anything at all - was seen as a burden. He’d chide her for the smallest of ‘meaningless’ purchases, imprinting upon her the importance of fiscal responsibility.

Hanabi, in the same breath...was rarely denied a luxury. And it only got worse as she got older.

Hinata told herself it was because she was the elder sister: she had to exercise more responsibility. Be more mature. But eventually she couldn’t kid herself anymore, and took to hoarding her mission money once she began to make it. Nothing was spared if she could help it. And it made trying to spend time with her classmates - the girls, especially - more and more difficult. She’d skip out on lunch when they’d meet, refusing to buy anything they spent time perusing. “Oh, I h-have one already.” “I just got something similar the o-other day.” Her excuses began to pile up, and the girls began to notice.

Soon enough...she wasn’t invited to go shopping anymore.

Of course...she hardly popular to spend time with in the first place.

So, when the two forces collided, it proved...interesting.

Sasuke had certainly been frugal, yes - he was forced into maturity at a young age, and knew he had to make his clan’s money last. He would need it for their rebuilding after avenging them. But...he still knew how to spend in moderation. Indulge every so often.

Upon beginning to date Hinata...her own extreme caution was noticed right away.

“Want to get lunch with me?”

At times it was, “Oh, I already ate.” Others, “I have food at home to eat up.” When he caught her stomach growling, she claimed she’d forgotten her wallet.

“It’s fine, I can pay.”

“Oh, n-no - I don’t want you to -”

“It’s just lunch, Hinata.”

“But…”

“What?”

Her fingers twiddled, looking torn. And here he thought she’d been working on getting over that bad habit. “...it’s...it’s not necessary.”

“...so? I want to. That’s all the reason I need.”

“But Sasuke-kun -”

“Hinata, it’ll be a few hundred ryō at best. I’m not worried about it.”

Her worried expression lingered, though she didn’t protest verbally again.

“...what’s wrong?”

“I guess...i-it just seems like a waste.”

Dark brows quickly furrowed. “It’s not a waste. I want to take you to lunch. Spend time with you. Have something to eat and just...sit and chat. Hinata, it’s not a big deal.”

She stopped evading so much after that, but always insisted on paying her half. Upon pressing her a few times, she finally confessed her worry over money.

“You’re kidding, right? Your clan is stupidly rich. And surely you make enough with missions besides, right?”

“I...y-yes. But...otōsama has always insisted I be careful. I...g-guess his words just stuck.”

“A bit too much if you ask me,” Sasuke had muttered under his breath.

“I-it’s fine. I have a lot saved up, so...it’s still been a good habit!”

“But how much have you made yourself miss out on over the years, being so stingy? When was the last time you bought something you weren’t convinced was a hundred percent necessary?”

She couldn’t answer.

So, Sasuke began countering her in his own quiet, stubborn way. Little gifts - inexpensive, but frequent - were given every time he saw her. She grew more and more insistent he was being ridiculous, but he wanted to prove a point.

“It’s just something small.”

“The s-small things add up!”

“Yeah, I know. But you know what’s a necessary thing to spend money on?” He paused, letting the silence build for emphasis. “...yourself. Your happiness. It’s okay to splurge, Hinata. Just so long as you do it in moderation. Just like anything else.”

Her cheeks puffed in a pout, but...she had nothing to counter with.

“Next time we go out, I want you to buy something. Just a little something. Anything that’ll make you smile. I don’t care what it is.”

And by golly, he stuck to it.

The next evening they spent together, he led them through a thoroughfare lined with merchant stalls, pointing out things she could buy. But Hinata was picky, looking them over and ultimately putting each of them back.

“Hinata…”

“I’m s-still looking!”

Then...she saw something that made her pause.

Several kids crowded around a booth selling little stuffed animals, proclaimed to be hand-sewn and all unique. And immediately, a little black cat caught her eye. She only had to consider it a moment before buying.

Coming back to Sasuke, she presented it to him, earning a perk of his brow. “...that’s...random.”

“It reminds me of you.”

Ever so slightly, he recoiled in surprise. “Me?”

“Mhm! Don’t the Uchiha have contracts with cats…?”

Where did she hear that? “Uh...yeah.”

“And it’s black...like your hair!”

...well, if that’s what it was going to take to get her to ease into breaking her habit, he’d go along with it. “Yeah...guess you’re right.”

“Want to get one?”

“Me?”

“Mhm! Something that reminds you of me! T-they can be a pair!”

Oh...well, that sounded a bit tough. He’d never really associated her with an animal...more with plants than anything. And they were hardly selling plush flowers. “...er…” Looking the selection over (and ignoring the questioning glances of the kids), he happened upon something that stoked a memory.

A little lion. Didn’t one of her jutsu have to do with a lion…?

“There.”

“Aww, it’s so cute!”

“Not as cute as the real thing,” Sasuke replied, holding the toy aloft and booping her nose with its own.

There was a pause, and then she broke into giggles.

“So? Feel okay about all that?”

“Mm, I guess...I’d still rather be careful.”

“You won’t have to be.”

“Hm?”

“...nevermind.”

     This prompt was...very random xD But I guess I managed to make it work? The trust fund is something I headcanon about Sasuke and where his money for his upkeep comes from. I know canon in Boruto seems to say otherwise (what with Sakura despairing over breaking down their house and having no money to repair it (again...)), but...in this house, we ignore Boruto just about completely n_n (idek if that's how that scene went...cuz honestly...I don't care xD)      SO, this is how I see it going. And poor Hinata. I'm sure she's got at least a few neuroses from Hiashi and his treatment of her as a kid =___= I get the impression this would be one of them. Maybe a TAD exaggerated, but...well, it's for the prompt lol      Buuut on that note, this sleepy bean needs to head to bed. Hope you enjoyed, and thanks for reading!

1. What is your character’s favorite color?:  mint, indigo, turquoise--cool colors, generally fairly desaturated.

2. What is your character’s favorite food?: most puff pastries, but especially cream puffs.

3. What is your character’s favorite drink?: peach infused green tea.

4. If your character likes tea, what is their favorite kind?:  see above.

5. If your character likes coffee, black or fancy?: only if “fancy” means “mostly cream and sugar”.

6. Dog or cat person? (Or other): cats are definitely preferred over dogs, though he’d really enjoy a snake.

7. Can they cook?: he’s fairly handy around the kitchen, yes.

8. Can they play any sort of instrument? How well?: he had a piano tutor from ages 4-5, but lessons were cut after the accident. he can plunk out a melody every so often but generally avoids it, especially now that his left hand isn’t as dexterous as it used to be. 

9. Can they sing? How well?: he can hold a tune, but doesn’t terribly care for his own voice so generally won’t try. average singer, not terrible but not anything to really note.

10. Optimist, Pessimist or in between?: does optimistic nihilist count? he looks on the bright side of life, but knows it’s all fairly futile because everyone dies eventually. might as well make the best of the time you’ve got, right?

11. If they could go anywhere, where would that place be?:  it’s difficult to choose just a single place, but he’d probably like to visit paris again now that he’s grown. the last time he was far too small to really enjoy it. 

12. How many siblings do they have? Do they have a favorite?:  one ex-sister of whom he was very protective.

13. What is their biggest fear?: isolation. as much as he generally tends to be on the sidelines, he’s still surrounded by people and that’s okay. 

14. If they could eat one food for the rest of their life (and it wouldn’t affect them negatively) what would it be?:  probably hamburgers. he has a fondness for red meat and vegetables so they’re a p fabulous choice overall. he might be a sugar fiend, but he’s discovered how dull that can get after living off of leftover pastries for a month or two.

15. If you could pick one career for them to do for the rest of their lives that isn’t what they do now, what would it be? What would they do best?:  considering he has no intention on staying in the café business for all that long, that’s not terribly difficult. he’d love--l o v e--to be able to explore ruins and things, and would probably do fairly well as some sort of expedition guide, possibly even back in egypt. if he were born a century ago he would’ve absolutely been some sort of adventurer venturing into jungles looking for lost civilizations and such.

Canon Characters

1. Is this character strictly canon, canon divergent, or completely an au?:  depends on what you classify “strictly canon”. my intention is as close to canon as i can get, but there’s a distinct lack of information to go on that’s filled in with headcanons, and since he’s technically “post canon” there’s nothing more for me to run off of so it’s just... whatever happens at this point lmao ;;

2. Do you draw from your own experiences for them?: only for his crafting adventures and a few basic aesthetic choices. otherwise i actually use the experiences of people around me for a lot of what he does (workplace things, headcanon hobbies, etc.)

3. What made you want to play them?: loved this idiot from his introduction in the dub of ygo dm a billion years ago and i started to learn more about how he was meant to be from the manga, but then when dsod clips started to surface and showed a glimpse into his past i was all “mighty n e e d” and here we are.

4. Give us one headcanon that you think fits your character most: near the end of his second year of high school, shortly after the group trip to egypt to send atem off, he got a trim and switched shampoo brands to one intended for “blond hair”, not realizing that the blue/violet dye meant to neutralize bronze tones would affect his naturally white mane. the change has been so gradual that no one’s thought to mention it, but looking back at photos from last year it’s p obvious.

5. What other canon characters do you want to rp with but haven’t gotten the chance to yet?: does “the thread was dropped quickly” count as “haven’t rp’d yet”? because i’d like to see him bounce off of a seto or a tkb for sure, and definitely a honda as well. god, can you imagine a bandit keith too though? that would be hilarious oh man.

6. Is your character in any cross-overs?: s o r t of? he’s had a couple of dropped threads with some yu yu hakusho muses (i would love to explore that world with him more though oh m a n) and an interaction with an au naruto muse, but overall there’s not much. i’m open to them for the most part, though, provided i can learn enough about the series and figure out a way for them to meet. it’s not that difficult, though, as he's been able to jump timelines and things accidentally ever since the whole mess with diva.

7. How do other people tend to view how you play the character?: no idea tbh. got a number of followers though so i guess not too poorly lmao ;; it’s alright though even if not many people like him--i like him and that’s what counts right?

8. Does your character inspire you?: he’s nicer and more mature than i am so that’s something to aspire to i guess? also he’s attained a higher level of nerdom than i could ever hope to manage but god i can t r y

Canon/Fanon Compliance: AU ‘verse. Sasuke left Konoha, but he came back right away or right after training or something. Team 7 went on to become ANBU

"This," Sasuke says, "is ridiculous."

"No, this is genius," Naruto retorts. "And long overdue. You're back for the first time in two years—with a secret baby you didn't tell anyone about—"

"Because you wouldn't have overreacted about it at all," Sai interjects.

"—and I finally have a night off from learning all the most boring Hokage crap—"

"Ahem," Kakashi cough as he carefully pours several shot glasses full of the strongest nihonshu that Tsunade ever hid in the Hokage's office. He still keeps it around for days when his choices are between getting blind drunk or committing homicide.

Usually because of the three other men in the room with him and their female teammate.

"—and our lovely wives are catching Sakura up on two years of gossip—"

Sasuke rolls his eyes. "It wasn't two years, idiot."

"—so we are going to spend the night doing manly bonding stuff," Naruto concludes.

"Which apparently involves copious amounts of alcohol."

"Damn straight."

"Why am I here?" Sai asks. "I'm secure enough in my masculinity that I don't need 'manly bonding stuff'."

Kakashi raises an eyebrow at him. "Did you just use air quotes?"

"Did I not do it properly?"

"No, you did. It's just…weird."

"Noted."

"I'm going home," Sasuke sighs and heads toward the door. "Kakashi, I'll be back to give you my report tomorrow, when you're not surrounded by morons."

"Hm, it appears what Sakura told Ino was true," Sai remarks innocently.

"Huh. Looks like," Naruto agrees, also affecting a casual tone of voice.

"I never would have believed it," Kakashi concludes, and Sasuke can practically hear him shaking his head.

He stops, mid-step, and his eyes drift closed in resignation. Every brain cell he was ever given tells him to ignore it. People have goaded him with worse in the past and he has learned not to rise to the bait.

However—

It's Naruto. And an insinuation by Naruto does not go unanswered, for any reason.

"What has my wife been saying?" Sasuke asks, not turning around and trying to keep his tone carefully measured.

"Only that your alcohol tolerance is worse than Lee's," his oldest friend concludes happily. "And here I was going to give you a chance to prove that was just a lie…"

Sasuke's jaw clenches, hearing the challenge in Naruto's voice, and he really should just keep going.

Of course, that's not what he does.

Whirling around he marches towards the filled shot glasses and reaches for one, intending to throw it down his throat just to prove he isn't worried about it.

Naruto stops him.

"Hey-hey, hold on, you're not just gonna chug them!" he protests. "Where's the fun in that?"

"Ah, is this where the 'manly bonding stuff' comes in?" Sai inquires. "I assume you have some kind of drinking game in mind, then?"

"Not happening," Sasuke declares, although he doesn't return on his path to the door.

"Kiba showed it to me," Naruto says cheerfully. "It's called ‘Never Have I Ever’."

"Oh, this is going to go well," Kakashi gives a resigned sigh.

"The rules are easy! Someone confesses something they have never done, and the other people who have done that thing all have to take a shot," Naruto explains.

"And the point of this is…?" Sasuke asks.

"To see who passes out drunk first," Sai says.

"And manly bonding," Naruto adds.

"I'm going home," Sasuke says.

"I can assign you cat retrieval missions from now until Sarada enters the Academy," Kakashi points out innocently.

Sasuke glares and takes a seat in front of the desk where several shot glasses are just waiting to be consumed.

"Very well, I will go first," Sai declares, considering for a moment. Then he beams. "I have never sung karaoke."

Naruto throws back a shot, and Kakashi sighs before doing the same.

"Really?" Sai asks.

"It was one of Gai's tamer challenges," Kakashi says, which explains it all. He side-eyes his former students. "Never have I ever snuck into a movie."

Naruto and Sasuke exchange glances and down their drinks.

"Why would you bother doing that?" Sai wants to know.

"We were thirteen," Naruto explains. "And technically we paid. But sitting on the ceiling wasn't exactly allowed, so we had to sneak in."

"But…why?"

"Training," Sasuke answers shortly, and then smirks at Naruto. He nods at one of the shots in front of him. "I have never accidentally set myself on fire."

Naruto glares, but reaches for the drink nonetheless. "That was once."

"It still happened."

"Yeah, well I never set someone on fire on purpose."

Sasuke snorts but reaches for his drink without outward complaint. Kakashi takes a drink as well.

Through that damned mask, as usual. I guess it's a good thing you're not supposed to taste the alcohol anyhow…

Sasuke's eye twitches as the liquor burns its way down his throat, and he wonders if it's possible to learn to speed up one's metabolism in a matter of minutes. He knows kunoichi are taught that trick in the Academy and makes a mental note to ask Sakura about it later.

As for now, he is going to have to play this ridiculous game in a manner that gets his friends inebriated before he hits his limit.

Sakura is going to pay for mentioning this…

"Never have I ever…" Sai begins, and then says brightly, "urinated in the shower."

Kakashi groans in disgust and Sasuke casually tells him, "There is something deeply wrong with you." When Naruto turns red and takes a shot, he adds, "And in your case, that goes without saying."

"I blame dealing with your bullshit," Naruto shoots back.

"Now, now, let's think of happier things," Kakashi lectures in a mocking tone. "For example, the fact that I have never been beaten up by an ostrich."

Sai sniggers as Naruto and Sasuke adopt identical beleaguered expressions and throw back their respective shots.

"Why are you guys picking on me?" Naruto complains, wiping his mouth.

"It's not our fault you've done pretty much every idiotic thing under the sun," Sasuke retorts, having to concentrate on enunciating his words. His cheeks feel a little warmer than usual, too. "Unlike you, I've never graffitied public property."

Naruto reaches for the next shot and sneers at Sasuke, "Yeah, but at least I've never been to prison. That's pretty idiotic."

Sasuke chooses not to reply to that, mostly because he still retains enough of his (ever-lessening) judgement to know that picking a fight while under the influence of alcohol would be a bad idea.

Also, he's pretty sure that Sakura would kill him. And Hinata would give him that disappointed look, the one that always makes him feel like he's kicked a puppy.

In deference of a wife with super-strength and not facing any kicked-puppy expressions from the mouse of a woman that could conceivably kill him with two fingers if she felt the inclination, Sasuke lets it go.

This time.

"My turn," Sai pipes up. "I have never streaked naked through the village."

Sasuke glances at Naruto, half-expecting him to take a drink, but the blond man simply looks amused at the idea. To everyone's surprise, Kakashi takes a drink.

Naruto guffaws and Sasuke raises an eyebrow at him. "Another of Gai's contests?"

"Yes."

"Clearly Naruto isn't the only one with tendencies toward poor judgement," Sai determines.

"Oh, I wouldn't call it poor," Kakashi muses, "it was actually quite liberating. You'd be surprised how good it feels to have a breeze between your—"

"Nope! Uh-uh, don’t want to know! Stop talking!" Naruto yells, while Sasuke's eye begins to twitch again. "It's your turn anyhow, Kakashi-sensei."

The white-haired man sighs. "Are you guys ever going to stop calling me sensei? I haven't been your squad leader since you were kids."

"If it helps, I never called you sensei," Sasuke points out. Then he frowns, because that was a little more candid than usual. His head is beginning to feel like it's being buoyed up by cotton. Why did he think this was a good idea again?

Kakashi regards him with an amused look in his eyes, and shakes his head. Then he juts his neck toward Sai, "Never have I have crossed-dressed.

Sai blinks. "How did you know about that?"

"Manako saw you. She says you're surprisingly adept at walking in high heels."

"Ino makes me practice," Sai shrugs, throwing his drink down his throat.

"Why?" Naruto demands, looking scandalised.

Sai smirks. "Now, that would be telling, wouldn't it?"

"At least he's finally had something to drink," Sasuke mutters.

"Why, are you worried you'll be the only one inebriated here, Coward?"

Sasuke narrows his eyes. "Never have I ever been part of a secret black ops organization."

Sai frowns and takes a shot; Kakashi does as well.

"Can we perhaps stay away from the darker topics?" he suggests.

"Good idea," Naruto says. He pauses to think, and frowns as if he can't think up anything good. In the end he settles on, "I have never sung in the shower."

Kakashi and Sai both drink.

"Did you even know what a shower was before marrying Hinata?" Sasuke challenges.

"At least I knew what a naked woman looked like before I got married."

"Oh, have we moved on to nudity then?" Sai speaks up, interrupting Sasuke's inner argument about whether to throw a fireball at his friend or electrocute him. "I have never engaged in naked pursuits with a woman that is not my wife."

"'Naked pursuits'?" Naruto asks.

"Sex, you moron," Sasuke rolls his eyes.

"Oh. Oh."

Kakashi reaches for a shot. When he notices Naruto and Sasuke's somewhat judgemental expressions he snorts.

"I wasn't a monk before I met you guys, you know. Not all of us can have some great, epic love story that spans years and continents, or ruins lives and sheds blood. Sometimes a good relationship starts out just as sex," he takes a drink, and then looks around as if he hasn't just imparted some oddly deep philosophy. "My turn, right? Alright—my first kiss wasn't with a man."

Naruto and Sasuke make identical noises of choked outrage and grudgingly down their shots.

"I heard about that," Sai sniggers. "Ino says it nearly caused a riot and that Naruto is lucky to have lived through puberty."

"Damn right he is," Sasuke mutters.

"Your turn, my adorable student," Kakashi points out.

"I'm thinking…"

"Oh, wow, only five shots and you already have to think?" Naruto jeers.

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't counting drinks invalidate things somehow?" Sai wonders. "Or does that just mean you haven't had enough?"

"Shut up. I have one," Sasuke interrupts, an idea coming to him before he can think too clearly about what his former teacher just said. "I have never read porn."

"There's a difference between porn and erotica," Kakashi grumbles, although he takes a shot; Naruto and Sai do as well.

"Semantics. It's still something closet perverts like you three do."

"That was research—and it paid off!" Naruto points out. "Remember the time my Reverse Harem Jutsu almost saved the world?"

"And how many naked men did you have to look at to get that one right?" Sai wonders. "At least when I've watched porn, it's been women."

"Your wife lets you watch porn?" Sasuke asks, squinting at the other man. For some reason that doesn't jive with what he knows of Ino.

"Hey! I've got the next one!" Naruto shouts as he refills their shot glasses. "Never have I ever watched porn with someone else!"

Sasuke shudders at the idea of that brand of awkwardness, and to his utter lack of surprise, both Kakashi and Sai drink.

"It was for educational purposes," Sai says unabashedly, while Kakashi shrugs, "It's really not a big deal."

"Please tell me this was with your wives and not some random dude you decided to watch porn with," Naruto groans.

"No," Sasuke interrupts. "Don't. Don't tell us anything. Ever. Just…take your damn turn and move on."

I'm going home. As soon as my feet don't feel like bubbles, I am leaving…

"I have never had sex with more than one person at a time," Sai declares.

Sasuke groans inwardly; he should have known they weren't going to leave the topic of sex alone once it had been broached.

This is about to take a turn for the awkward.

Again, Kakashi takes a drink.

"Really?" Naruto looks scandalised and fascinated. "Was it with two girls, or a guy and a girl?"

"Gentlemen don't kiss and tell," Kakashi says mysteriously.

"Gentlemen don't play stupid drinking games," Sasuke points out.

Kakashi raises an eyebrow at this, and then says innocently, "I've never had sex outdoors.”

Sasuke rolls his eyes.

The other two watch him in expectation, as if waiting for him to outright lie. It occurs to Sasuke that playing this game with a bunch of shinobi wasn't a good idea. Even if he wanted to lie about something, they'd be able to tell.

Aware of the warmth in his cheeks, he reaches for his drink, pointing out as he does, "That's common knowledge."

"It still counts."

"Fine. I've never had my child walk in during."

Mostly because Sarada is a long time away from walking, but it's something he figures must have happened to his sensei at some point. He's got three kids past the toddling age.

As expected, Kakashi has to take a drink, and Sasuke basks in a momentary sense of victory.

Until Naruto laughingly shouts, "Oh, hey, I got one! I got one! Never have I ever…done butt stuff during sex!"

And Sasuke promptly chokes on his own spit.

Because no, no, no, that is not something he ever expected to be brought up here.

Naruto is smirking a challenge at Kakashi, like he figures learning one or two perverted things about his former teacher have given him total insight into how to get his sensei drunk.

Kakashi takes a drink, and then crosses his arms (his attempt to look unbothered is tempered by his pink cheeks). "I'm not ashamed. My sex life is amazing."

Naruto gapes. "No way! That was totally a joke, I didn't think—" He is interrupted as Sai cheerfully takes a shot as well. "Ehhhh?! You too?"

"Don't knock it until you try it," Sai says. "It's actually an interesting sensation when experienced in conjunction with—"

And that's my cue—

Sasuke wobbles to his feet. "I don't need to know any of this. I'm leaving."

"After all that ridiculousness, this is your limit?" Kakashi challenges, a knowing tone in his voice. Sasuke continues making a dogged beeline to the door. "Huh. If I didn't know any better, I'd say you're trying to avoid another shot, Sasuke."

"Hahaha!" Naruto sniggers. "No way."

Just a few more steps…

"Sasuke would never be into that sort of thing, he's way too boring," Naruto continues. "Remember, we had to practically tell him what sex was before he got married…"

Almost there…

"As I recall, he had a very interesting reaction to certain topics that night," Sai points out. "Particularly when we asked him the sort of things he had done with Sakura already. His neck used to get very red. A bit like what's happening right now."

Just reach out and grab the door –

"No way," Naruto murmurs blandly. "No fucking way."

"I did not see that coming," Kakashi says, sounding too surprised to be teasing.

"You mean Sasuke Uchiha took it up the ass?!" Naruto shouts.

Sasuke turns around, glaring daggers at this friend. "Shout it a little louder, you utter moron!"

There is silence.

Naruto's jaw drops, and the other two are blinking in surprise. The tableau would be funny if it weren't for the fact that Sasuke has realised his usual perfect control over his emotions have just caused him to confirm the one thing he did not want to confirm.

Shit.

"But wait…if you've never been with anyone you weren't married to, that would mean…" Sai begins.

"Don't finish that sentence," Sasuke warns.

"Sakura," Sai concludes.

"So she used a…?" Kakashi makes a lewd gesture.

"I did not need to know that about Sakura," Naruto murmurs, shuddering. "Oh, gods, I just got a mental image—oh my god, somebody scramble my brains, please!"

"That can be arranged," Sasuke growls, feeling electricity beginning to crackle in his palm.

"Aaaaand I'm calling an executive order to end tonight," Kakashi says, staggering to his feet. "By order of the Hokage, blah blah blah, you are all to go home and sober up. And no murders while in the Konoha environs."

"Seriously?!" Naruto squeaks at Sasuke, still apparently struggling with the concept.

"If you breathe a word of this to anyone, I'm taking off an arm," Sasuke hisses, taking a menacing step forward. "Or a leg. Probably a leg. Think how ridiculous you'll look, hopping around on one leg. Then you'll never be Hokage."

"And that's how we know Sasuke is drunk, gentlemen," Kakashi says. "Rambling death threats. I think we can call tonight a success, don't you?"

"We should do it again some time," Sai agrees.

"I'm leaving," Sasuke grumbles. "I'm taking a mission to the middle of fucking nowhere and never coming back. And I'm telling my wife it's your fault, and she's going to kill you all for me. I won't even have to get my hands dirty."

Kakashi chuckles. "I suppose I should make sure you get home alright and don't end up walking into a tree."

"Tch."

He stalks off, wobbling and angry and wondering if it's worth the headache to use a portal to get home.

"So, is this butt-sex thing something I'm missing out on?" he hears Naruto asks Sai, and then he sees red.

With a snarl of rage, Sasuke whirls around and makes a dive for Naruto's neck.

hi~ i read your about page where you said you might write up your reasons for not liking some ft ships like the whole debate with fraxus/miraxus & chendy/rowen but i couldn't find anything on it on your blog so i wondered what were your thoughts on that? i know there's fandom arguments about homophobia and crackshipping there too. i’m a multishipper but i really like your anti posts for naruto so i thought if you had any ft ones then they might be as good! �

Like I said on my page, “Ihave a ‘manga > anime’ complex thanks to Studio Pierrot, so I only readFT. I wanted to avoid filler brainwashing, bias and only know of canon withthis series, after the mess with Naruto…” Therefore, I only really ship thatwhich I believe is substantially depicted/suggested in canon, and kind of havea bit of a pet peeve for anything outside of that.[ #1 justificationdisclaimer! ]

( 1 ) Mir/axus [ &Fraxus ]

So I was genuinelysurprised that Mir/axus was even a thing when I started searching the fandom’s tag, onceI’d caught up. I don’t know if they’ve been implied in filler, but theywere non-existent as a romantic pair in the manga. Honestly, theyhardly had any on-panel interaction… Like, the only evidence that came tomind for “logical” reasoning behind them was chapter 380’s cover art.(Maybe 329’s, at a push.) I even tried to find somesupposed “moments” under their Wikia page, but that listed was merelyscarce interaction with no romantic subtext; each synopsis was pretty muchgrasping for straws.

Here’s the thing –you mentioned the fandom discourse of “homophobic” accusations,right? Now, I too hate when shippers (in any fandom) cry that simplybecause others don’t ship a queer pairing. Like, c’mon. But, inthis case (and Wendy’s), I must admit that I do find it somewhatrelevant… Idk if this ship’s popularity (and, more so, acceptance alongsidethe actual semi-canon pairs) is because most have been influenced byexternal material or if it’s just because there’s no other member of the opposite sex that they’re paired with, but Fraxus was actually suggested in canon; emphaticallyfrom Freed’s point of view! Even on Laxus’ side, numerous chapters have moments that – here’s the thing – anyone would undeniablyaccept if either Freed or Laxus were female*.

[ My earlier volumes are enclosed in my bookcase, but I have 49 – 57 (Avatar – Alvarez) on-hand beside my bed, so I skimmed through to find (max.) five pages to evidence Laxus’ P.O.V. ‘cause this post will already be long enough. ]

Chapter 416: “At this rate, I won’t be able to protect what’s important to me.”

It’s also worth noting that the official tankōbon/volume translation of this reads: “I’m not strong enough to protect the people I love yet.”

Chapter 462: “But that ain’t important now. All I’ve got on my mind… Is bringing the pain to the bastard who took out Freed and the others.”

Chapter 472: “So you’re the one who did a number on Freed and the others?”

Chapter 473: “Thanks a lot, Freed… There’s no wizard that could break your spells…”

*That’s the key consideration – that if you were to replace either’s gender for that of the opposite sex, it changes how these scenes are perceived. These panels, for example, are dismissed by those who oppose Fraxus, but they would be regarded as “ship moments” and a validation of Laxus’ affection if you were to replace Freed’s name in the dialogue and/or presence in the panels with a female (Mira)!

That’s why I can kind ofunderstand these claims, ’cause the existence and general fandomacceptance of these ships is very heteronormative in that respect (i.e.ignoring present queer pairings for heterosexual ‘crack-ships’) which makes it kind of discriminatory; reminiscent of homophobia perhaps. Although, I agree that term is a little extreme, as it doesn’t seem intentionally prejudiced. And whilst Freed is emphatically portrayed as queer, Laxus’ sexualityis a little more implicit, yet he is assumed straight by default… It’sironic/hypocritical because the majority of ships across all fandoms are typically founded upon onecharacter’s feelings, whilst neither Mira nor Laxus have shown said romanticinterest in each-other.

( 2 ) Ro/Wen [ &Chendy ]

Again, I hate Ro/Wen dueto a similar reasoning. Finding out that they even existed as a ship wasbaffling, tbh! I mean, at least Mir/axus had the cover as some rationale,but Ro/Wen is based solely on them being the same age… Talk aboutheteronormative? Also, technically, that’s an incorrect claim, due to the sevenyear time-skip in which she remained frozen. Like, she’s actually thesame age as Sting & Rogue. But you don’t find her forced with them. Why,because they’re older and that’s frowned upon? You know, despite the samepremise applying to Ro/Wen; since Romeo was half Wendy’s age when she wasintroduced (6 & 12).

The ship can’t even besupported with evidence, since they had no significant canoninteraction until the Alvarez Arc. Their only other contact was in an omake.Yet their age difference is evident in both; dismissing any reach atromantic subtext. In the omake, Romeo refers to Wendy as “nee[-chan]”.Similarly, she is presented comforting him like a child in their limited Alvarez panels, with him lookingup to her as that same sister figure. I have seen some of these shippers disregard Chendy asbeing “platonic”, when Romeo and Wendy’s dynamic isactually – canonically and strictly – such.

Chendy, however, do have asubstantial, visibly and literally present, mutual bond. They have extensive,plentiful interaction, as well as actually present romanticsubtext… I know that it may be difficult for (I guess) anyone outside of theLGBT+ community or a truly ‘open’ one to understand, due to ourheteronormative society – as Chendy are often disregarded as “justfriends” (🙄) – but many of theirmoments transcend platonic affection and bear intense likeness to theother romantic pairs’ depictions. For example, they are also featuredalongside the semi-canon couples in art-work, like Mashima’s couple sketches onTwitter.

Not to mention thatfriendship is the foundation of any healthy, romantic relationship! Of coursethey’re going to be best friends before engaging in such, particularly in thecase of same-sex pairs. Yet no-one uses this dialogue (of labellingeach-other as “friends”) against NaLu, despite them stating the otheras that same description on numerous occasions. But despite the justification mentioned above,Chendy are still dismissed. Again, if either were the male, it would be a completely different situation… I mean, since people shipcharacters based solely on covers and all – chapter 421’s cover (amongothers)?

Summary:

Obviously there’s nothingwrong with crack-shipping! And, no, not liking a queer pair [more than astraight one] doesn’t make you “homophobic”. But – in the case ofFraxus 🆚 Mir/axus& Chendy 🆚 Ro/Wen –I think that there is something kind of messed up with arrogantly defying acharacter’s canon depicted/suggested sexuality and/or romantic interest(s).There is something somewhat discriminatory about disregarding theirother prevalent, significant and actually developed bonds, to the extent that someone’sheteronormativity is so severe that they substitute a same-sex character foran irrelevant one of the opposite sex, who does not even have decentinteraction with the character in question; fabricated entirely from theridiculous, inaccurate [R/W] rationale of them being “the same age” or merelysharing a chapter cover.

That sounds much harsherthan I intended, I’m so sorry! Btw, I don’t blame shippers –everyone is (obviously) allowed to ship what they want! What’s stated above issimply why I’m against Mir/axus and Ro/Wen, especially as an avidsupporter of the LGBTQ+ community, a bisexual myself and a university scholar who has studied/written about this field.

✔: A plot you would love to play out with your character

     Well, generally speaking, there’s my wishlist for things that tend to be smaller. But otherwise, I actually do have a few major things I’d love to try!     For now I’m just planning on (trying to) write them as fanfics, but there’s two bigger plots I’ve been putting together mostly for my own amusement.     One’s my Avatar: The Last Airbender crossover. It started as a series of drabbles I wrote for my son @scxrlctiisms over on the drabble blog. But I’ve been working on trying to get them more…linear and tied together to try and make a full, longer plot. It’s slow going but I am determined xD     Another is a silly idea that I liken to the Naruto movies: a side-plot with NOTHING to do with canon that’s just…overly-ridiculous and mostly just something I ponder over in my spare time. It IS, by default, based around my A Light Amongst Shadows verse, but that could technically be changed around. It’s about Ryū being kidnapped (wow imagine that) and being forced into a sage state to siphon off nature chakra into a mechanism in an attempt by some baddies to create a new bijū even more powerful than the Kyūbi. It’s ridiculous, I know, but that’s sort of the point xD Just something with a lot of action and a heroine in distress: as I said, like the Naruto movies already lol. I have a tentative summary about it, with the baddy roles filled by Alec’s other blog charries from @ofascxnsionss - but that can easily be changed to fit other blogs, I guess? I was lacking baddies and thought they’d work for at least one iteration of things lol     And lastly, I’m a big animated movie nerd - I sit and listen to them while I do things, mostly while drawing or cleaning. More mindless things. Which lets my mind wander and create crossovers between movies and Naruto. And what’s the fun if I don’t include Ryū? xD So pretty much any animated movie I know well-enough, I’ve probably imagined a crossover of. You’d be surprised how easy it is for me to do. I even have a post about it where I gave an example about Howl’s Moving Castle, lol! Ghibli films are a fave for it.     So…yeah! I spend WAY too much time thinking about silly things I can do with Ryū…obviously lol     Thanks for the question!

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day Five: Shreds of Doubt ] [ Uchiha Sasuke, Hyūga Hinata ] [ SasuHina ] [ Verse: Divine Light ] [ AO3 Link ]

“...what if this doesn’t work?”

The question catches Hinata off-guard, looking up from the fire she’s tending to one of her three traveling companions. For the moment, it’s just the two of them...and Sasuke’s brow is heavy with thought. “...what do you mean?”

“Any of...of this.” A hand gestures vaguely. “We’ve been traveling for weeks, and my brother is still ill. I’m starting to wonder if that lux mage is even capable of healing him.”

“She can! She just...needs more time. And resources. It’s why we’re heading back to the capital!”

“That place has been empty for centuries: ever since the coup, and the war. What does she expect to find there?”

“I...guess I don’t know, exactly. But she’s confident it will help Itachi. We just need to be patient. Her treatments are keeping him steady!”

“But he’s not improving!”

“Nor is he getting any worse!” Hinata sits back on her feet, looking to him with a worried brow of her own. “...where are all these shreds of doubt coming from?”

A pained expression overcomes Sasuke’s face. Elbows atop his knees, woven fingers hide him from view for a moment. “...I can’t lose him.”

“...you won’t.”

“I can’t know that.”

“No...but you can have faith.”

“Tch…” He quickly blows off the notion. “I’ve never been one to think that way.”

“And why not?”

“I’ve had too much go wrong. Lost too much.I can’t put stock in something I can’t know to be true, or sure. It’s a gamble I won’t take.”

“...and yet you’re taking one now.” Hinata’s head tilts, hair shimmering indigo in the firelight as it ripples. “And what has this all been but a series of circumstances that aligned just right? It was chance you met me that day. If you hadn’t...you’d have no way to meet the lux mage. Does that really not show that the fates were working your favor?”

“If they were working in my favor, he’d never have gotten ill in the first place.”

“None of us can avoid pitfalls altogether, Sasuke - that’s not how life works. All of us here...we’ve all lost something. Even her, a disciple of Luxeria. But the point is that life is balance. Where one thing goes wrong, another will e-eventually go right. Even if it takes a while. And I truly believe you two meeting us was one of those things going right. Our path won’t be easy...but that doesn’t make it any less necessary to walk. If you want Itachi to get better...you have to give something in return.”

Hinata sighs wistfully, staring into the flames. “...everyone thought those of dark and light magics were gone. But she’s proof they still live! Proof that we may yet find balance again. I’m sure that by helping her get back to the capital...we too will be helped.”

He still looks hardly convinced. “...I guess for now I don’t have any choice. Itachi’s chosen to believe her, so...I’ll follow.”

“I promise she’ll come through for you. You just need a little faith!”

No reply.

The water mage’s shoulders heave with a sigh. “...how about you teach me some more about ven? Would that ease your mind, to dwell on something different?”

Crimson eyes give her a tired glance. At least she’s trying. “... I suppose.” He rises from his perch by the fire, and they instead move to the lakeshore as best to let her practice. Given their opposite elements - hers of water and his of fire - there’s far more theory involved on his end.

“So...before, I told you that ven is just energy.”

“Mhm.”

“It is, however, a more...specialized energy. All things have energy...but only some can utilize it as we do. And the only reason we can is because -”

“Of our ancestors’ blessings from the Elementals.”

A pause as she interrupts him, expression cooling slightly.

“...sorry.”

“...it’s fine. But I thought you said you knew almost nothing about it…?”

“I...know scraps. Mostly from the lux mage, she’s - she’s taught me a few small things. But we haven’t really had time for proper lessons. Like this.”

“...hn.” A moment to regather his thoughts. “...so, back when the Elementals arrived in our world, no humans could use ven. Nor could any animals. It was only due to their influence, and their ‘blessings’. Which is why only those with blessed ancestors can wield it.

“In short, ven is energy that directly...correlates with an element. Depending on what kind you’re born with, certain elements will obey your will more easily. For me, that’s fire. And you, water. But it also makes it easier to branch into sister elements. I have better odds of learning lightning - a child of fire - than say something like...ice. Which you could, given that it’s a child element of water.

“All it takes is practice. Your energy - your ven - calls to your element. But each is also unruly in its own way. Fire is hungry, and can easily slip from your grasp in search of what it wants, rather than what you want. Water, I’ve heard, is more...playful. It wants to be free and flow where it wills. You have to control it. Master it. Your intentions have to be more firm than its own. Then, it will bow to you and let you manipulate it to your will.”

Looking a little awed (and maybe a tad lost), Hinata nods slowly. “...I think I understand.”

“All right then. Try to fetch some water from the lake.”

“...and...do what with it?”

“Whatever you want. But best to have a goal in mind before you start, or you’ll lose it.”

Another nod. Facing the waves, Hinata takes several deep breaths before arms lift, palms glowing faintly with a cerulean energy. Sasuke remains a few paces behind, watching.

Directing her energy into the water, Hinata finds a portion to call. Clearly concentrating, she pulls back with both arms, ebbing and flowing her movements as she tries to convince the water to follow. It eddies back and forth, apparently not entirely willing.

But a setting of her jaw sees several gallons lift from the surface, pure and wobbling in her amateur grip.

“Oh!”

Startled at her own success, Hinata quickly loses it, the element falling back into the lake with a splash.

“What happened?”

“...I -?”

“You let go. Why?”

Fingers twiddle at her front, looking from Sasuke, to the water, and back. “...I didn’t...feel ready.”

“And you tell me I have doubt,” he retorts, ignoring her bristling. “You can’t second guess yourself. It affects the stability of your grip. You are born of a pureblood line of aqua’el’ven, Hinata. Dominion over water sings in your veins. Don’t let it intimidate you! Long ago, Auquiana themself granted that power to your ancestors. That power isn’t something to dispute. Take it, and use it!”

After a pause, Hinata’s chin ducks in a curt nod. Turning back to the shore, she takes sure steps to its edge. Presenting her hands again, ven flares to life...brighter this time. Knees bend, arms brandishing out and down as though to lift. And as they do, another sphere - over a meter across - slips up from the lake without a ripple. Within it, several fish drift lazily in circles as it holds aloft in the moonlight.

Shock wipes Sasuke’s face clean. He...didn’t expect that to work.

Hinata holds it for a moment longer before slowly lowering her limbs. Without disturbance, the lifted water sinks back into the lake with a final blip of sound. Pale blue eyes are like mirrors as she looks back to him, still steeped in the energy. “...how was that…?”

“...I told you you’ve no reason to doubt.”

A nod. “And if I can do this...then imagine what she can do. It means you can’t doubt, either.”

“...I suppose I can’t.”

     All righty, here's day five! And our first step out of ALAS, and into another verse I love to write: that being a crossover with...technically a world of my own creation I call Divine Light. A fantasy verse I intend to write novels for...someday ^^; But for now, using Naruto characters in it is actually really great practice, and lets me worldbuild, too!      Despite her canon elements of fire and lightning, Hinata's always struck me as a water type gal - I do the same with her Pokémon verse! It must be that OG season scene of her training on the water...it just feels like her element. So here, she's a water elf! And during her travels with a few other mages, she's been getting training from Sasuke despite his own element of fire.      And you know what they say about opposites ;3c      Anywho, that's all for today - I hope y'all enjoyed, and thanks as always for reading!
