You have every right to not like the style of This Is How You Lose The Time War, but the flowery language distracts from the scenes is certainly a thing to say about an epistolary novella about emotions, relationships, imagery and concepts that is not really plot heavy

Most of the book's structure is one of them goes somewhere in space and time, finds a letter by the other, the rest of the chapter is the letter, and the relationship and the plot slowly develop.

It's not an accident.

It's not primarily an action novel.

What scene were you distracted from???

The vignette about a place in history you will only see once in the book because the point is what it symbolizes about the braiding of history and what it says about the characters? The letter where the characters show their inner workings and how they think of each other, their sides and the world? The desperate actions taken due to extreme emotion should be more focused on what they were physically doing at the time? What?
