author's note: support your local drag scene! i'm going to a drag show tonight and i'm very excited to take a break from uni and writing papers and reading theory

summary: you take matt to his first drag show, suggestive but no sex, matt murdock x reader, gender neutral reader, discussions of alcohol, showering together

Matt had lived in NYC his entire life and didn't know any different. He couldn't imagine a non-walkable city, pizza shops on every corner, and not hearing an ambulance siren every second of the day. Despite his intense senses, he was very good at tunning out the soundscape that is the city.

But there was one thing Matt had never done in New York. Matt had never been to a drag show.

Sure, he was familiar with the bar culture. Hell, he'd been to a few gay bars back in the day. But never to see a drag show.

He was convinced the vibe wouldn't be right for him. He was also concered about the sheer amount of sensory input: the stinging song of the lights, the bass shaking the floor, the loud music, the warmth of alcohol throughout the venue.

But, when you offered to take him to his first show he couldn't have said yes faster. He was excited. The show was over a week away, but you wanted to give him enough time to process the situation and prepare himself for it. Matt was also very anxious. he asked you lots of details about the venue and how to get there. He asked about the type of crowd that they typically pull. Matt asked you every question he could come up with throughout the week.

You knew that when he was sensory overwhelmed it could be a recipe for disaster, sending Matt into a series of panic attacks or worse, give him flashbacks.

When the day came, Matt was bouncing around the apartment. He convinced Foggy to let him leave the office early so he could prepare. He had to find something to wear, something cool enough to not be out of place but comfortable enough so that didn't contribute to his overwhelm-ness.

When you got off of work and made it back to the apartment, you walked in to see clothes scattered all over the house. Matt was in the closet throwing things behind him, trying to piece something together.

"Are you looking for something or just creating an elaborate tripping hazard for yourself?"

"I don't know what to wear. I can't wear my usual suit because that will be too formal. But I can't wear gym clothes, beacuse obviously. I guess I'm realizing I got rid of all my manwhore clothes from college when Fog and I would go barhopping." He stopped digging for a second to turn your direction.

"Do you want some help?"

"I'd love some."

You walked through the house looking at the options before deciding to sort through what was left of the closet instead.

"Okay Matt, how about just some jeans. Any jeans. These are black normal straight leg jeans."

"Okay. Okay. But What do I wear on top?"

"How do you feel about this shirt." You passed it behind you into his hands. He passed it between his fingers to feel all of the textures.

"Is this mesh? ARE YOU TRYING TO GET ME TO WEAR SOMETHING SEE-THROUGH?"

"Yes, it's mesh. It's a sheer black short sleeve button up that I bought for you and then I guess forgot to gift to you."

"You're ridiculous, you know that?"

"I do. Now put it on."

Matt was hesitant but trusted you to make him look good. You helped him button the front while his hands ran over his body, feeling the texture on his skin.

"Oh this is nice."

"I told you. Now let me get ready."

You put in headphones while Matt finished getting ready. You changed outfits rather quickly, already having an idea of what you wanted to wear tonight.

While in thebathroom using the mirror to fix your hair, Matt walked in and settled behind you, snaking his hands around your hips.

"I bet you look so good right now," Matt started kissing the back of your neck, biting every so ofter, "What're you wearing?"

"Find out for yourself."

His hands caressed your whole body, stopping at the chain around your neck. He pulled on it to tilt you head down for more access to the side of your neck.

"Keep it in your pants Murdock. We have to leave soon."

You packed your bag and made sure Matt had anything he could need tonight while you were out: specifically nausea meds because you knew he would drink until he was sick if given the chance.

"Let's go!!"

It was a short walk to the venue. Matt was giggly the whole walk, purposely tapping you with his cane when you got too far ahead of him.

At the door, Matt folds in his cane and tucks it into his back pocket for now. You paid the cover and got your two mandatory drink tickets and helped Matt up the front steps before finding yourself at the end of the bar.

"Drinks?" Matt was excited to get this night started.

He ordered for both of you. Himself, a negroni, and you, a vodka cran. You grabbed both and searched for a table, finding a tall one with two chairs to sit out.

"So the show starts in 20 minutes. How do you feel?"

Matt took a huge sip and smiled, "Buzzed. There's too many bodies walking around. Will you tell me what's happening."

"Yah. Okay, so the rooms almost full. I'm sure you can tell that. We must have got the last table or maybe whoever was here saw the poor sad blind man and moved for us," Matt laughed along with you, "But some of the performers are walking through the crowd. The DJ is finishing getting set up. I'm sure you can tell by the music. Oh, and also the hosts just sat down."

You were interupted by an annoucement over the loud speakers about the show starting soon. Matt reached for your hands and squeezed hard when he found them.

When the show started Matt had very quickly become the center of attention, with many performers coming up to him to flirt. One of the queen under her breath asked to take Matt's glasses off for a bit, and after he said yes, she took them, put them on, and danced around for the rest of the song before returning them to the table with a wink.

At the start of each number you explained their outfit and makeup and any props they had on stage to Matt. He swayed and sung along the whole night, cheering when performers did big stunts and offering his commentary about audio mixing to you between numbers.

"Okay and this one is wearing a yellow wig, and it's curly and big, like a southern grandma. And she has on big black stomping boots with lots of buckles. She's in a latex dress, skin tight and barely covering anything. She's covered in chains and spikey metal accessories. Her nails are loooong stilletos and they're shiny black with crystals. And her makeup is also all black and super glossy."

"Do you think I'd look good in that dress?"

"You're drunk."

"Perhaps, but I could use another." And so he did.

At the end, every performer joined the crowd for a dance party, many of the flocking to Matt to flirt with him some more, and he ate it up. He was singing and dancing along the crowd, laughing with the emcees and taking shots with the queens.

A drag queen was holding Matt's hand and spinning him around, bumping into the rest of the crowd and spilling the drink in his hand. He was buzzed and happy.

At last call Matt grabbed his final drink and finally sat back down to relax.

"So how would you say your first drag show is going?" He didn't respond, just giggling and blowing you a kiss.

They finally kicked you both out, tipsy and stumbling down the street, Matt was still singing and humming with excitement. When you finally reached the apartment, he collapsed on the couch with a sigh.

"After all this time living in NYC, I cannot believe I haven't been to a drag show yet. I feel like I've been missing this my entire life." Emotionally drunk Matt wasn't typical, here he was in tears over how exciting the night was. "It was so magical."

"I don't think you've drank this much in so long."

"We should do it more often." His senses were blasted, unable to navigate the apartment as good as he normally did.

"Absolutely not. Shower time Matthew."

He hummed in affirmation adn stripped right there in the living room. Butt-ass-naked and still wiggling around like the club music was still blasting.

When you wrangled him into the shower, you stripped as well joining him in the warm water.

"Do you think we can go back next week again? One of the queens asked when she'd see me again."

"Were you flirting with them?"

"I'm not really sure." He chuckled, alcohol seeping out of his skin, slowly sobering up in the water.

"I'm not letting you get this drunk next time."

"Try and stop me."

"Oh I will." You tickled him for a second before clinging onto his torso, kissing his chest. "Alright, bedtime."

You turned off the water and stepped out handing Matt his towel.

"Okay but we can go back next week, right?"

"Of course Matt."

We know for a fact that at least Hades' demons share a room, Barbatos talks in his sleep (from Foras' daily chat), that Stolas needs his pillow... (Stolas' daily chat) but how do you picture the rest of them ?

Do they wear fancy pajamas or stay naked ? Do some of them require a plushie or a special pillow, even drag someone to cuddle with ? Do they even have actual beds or sleep on a couch instead ? Do they sleep on the side of the mattress or with splayed limbs like a starfish ? Tell me everything.

Is it bad if I think Andrealphus sleeps with his eyes open? Like, maybe not fully, but at least partly. Like, they were so badly injured when he was young that I feel there was a period of time where he couldn't properly close them, so he learned to sleep with them open to some capacity. Also don't think he can sleep in the same room as other people because he never knows who may stab him in the back/unsure he will wake up to them still alive. He has trauma, man... Also, he sleeps in the clothes he wore all day.

Bathin sleeps perfectly still and can sleep anywhere. In his travels, he has had to sleep in some strange, small, and/or questionable places so he's learned to roll with the punches.

Gusion counts sheep for fun. Except he counts in weird paterns. Think... He'll count by primes (2,3,5,7,11,13,etc) or squares (1,4,9,16,25,etc).

Naberius sometimes sleeps in puppy form. He also sleeps naked.

Bael hasn't used his own bed in so long that it has gathered dust.

Valefor somehow goes weight training in his sleep. I'm not sure how that's possible, but he has.

Eligos bed is filled will stuffed animals of only the highest quality. They each have a name and a backstory. They are absolutely perfect, not a stitch out of place. There are so many that they are used in place of pillows. Also, he has an absolutely insane bedtime skin/hair routine to make sure he wakes up as cute as always. He, of course, has the most adorable sheer pajamas.

Bimet sleeps cuddling an old school piggy bank.

Marbas sleeps tied to his bed. It's his thing. He enjoys it very much.

Dantalian sleeps in an Ebenezer Scrooge outside. I cannot explain this one. It's just a vibe.

Phenix wakes up to ruined sheets every morning because he can't escape endless orgasms even in his sleep. Yes, he sleeps naked. He also has super soft sheets. Like, the softest.

Astaroth's snake is free roam at night, but he always wakes up to it already cuddled around him because it's looking for warmth (and love).

My Sanders Sides headcanons (some sad some random X3). Anyway I'm mentally ill about my favorite guys so here's my headcanons only at this point they aren't even the same characters anymore and I should probably just make them my OCS but fuck you I won't do that. First off if you know me it's obviously Janus.

I think he uses all pronouns (I'm gonna be referring to him with he/him here so nobody gets confused) but won't elaborate on his gender or sexuality because he likes making people guess.

He's very tall (Remus likes to climb him like a jungle gym) and wears heels because, despite being unable to properly walk, he likes feeling superior to people. Of course this works against him and he ends up hitting his head, getting his hat swept off him by low ceilings, and tripping a lot without his cane. He also needs a cane because he's not used to having legs (he usually has a snake tail) and will trip over his own feet or forget to walk sometimes. Still he insists on wearing heels. "Beauty is pain" and all that

He's color blind and can only see in shades of yellow or blue like a lot of snakes (Patton knows this and decided on wearing a nice light blue so that he stands out to Janus because they're animal buddies shhh ignore canon we don't talk about that here).

He feeds on radiation I just know it in my soul. On the topic of things I have no reason to believe but I do. He's indigenous like me, sorry guys it's just true.

He's like the local cryptid. He'll often stand in the back of photos just to scare the others or pop up out of nowhere and stand behind them until they notice (he thinks he's so funny. Little bastard man. I'm gonna take a bite out of his skull. Cut him open to reveal he's been a cake all along) this has gotten him punched on several occasions.

There's so little information about this guy it's crazy, i'm just pulling stuff out of my magic hat for this one.

1- Different backstories, you know the drill. Instead of being locked away inside a lantern, he was successfully abandoned by the Flame Queen. He was left somewhere that didn't have much to set on fire, consequently leaving no traces to be found, like a desert, perhaps. Eventually he found his way out and started wandering around the land.

2- He likes to make tiny glass statues with sand. It's one of the few nice things he can do when he's a walking fire.

3- Hear me out on Brazilian Flame Prince okay it's the last time I'll shove my Brazilian hcs on you I promise- /j Anyway the reason for this one is that Flame Prince looked like the Curupira at the beginning of Natasha Allegri’s F&C comic and I found it funny enough to make it into a headcanon. I have other reasons, such as:

» Almost making him a Maned Wolf in Jackalope Fionna's AU (he's a Will-o'-the-wisp now but the thought is still there), and Maned Wolves are considered a symbol here in Brazil.

» Another folklore reference: If Fionna's magical word had an Elementals Arc, I imagined him becoming a fire snake thing like the Boitatá instead of a salamander dragon.

» The vibes told me.

4- I don't think he has a canon birth date, so I hc that his birthday is on August 22,, , Yes, it's because it's Folklore Day here in Brazil are you seeing the pattern yet

5- He's bisexual and just as unaware as Fionna. But in his defense, he wasn't taught how being gay works.

I think he'd be so stubborn about it oml you'd tell him a million times not to go out while it's raining and he's like "It's just a drizzle let me go >:(", until his body starts giving out near the end and he needs some dry wood to recover. Just get the damn umbrella, fire boy.

8- Biggest cat person you'll know. Cats will sit around him because he's warm and he'll refuse to move. I think his human self would have many cats in his house to reference the fire kittens he has.

9- His interactions with Fionna made me so sad in the comic, the way he immediately tried to hug her when he regained consciousness oughjsuwhs That boy has never received physical affection in his life and when he finally gets it, he somehow manages to lose it again i'm not okay,, , He'd be so clingy if he ever found out about that Flame Shield spell.

10- I hc that he's trans. I've been thinking about how (biological) gender would work for fire elementals because, well... they're fire. Does fire have gender? No idea. Yet they still use gendered terms like daughter, princess, King (though Flame Princess calls herself "King"), etc... So in my mind, it's more a matter of how they're raised according to the parent's preferences and not biology. Flame Prince could've been raised to be a daughter and princess before being abandoned, but went the other direction later on after being surrounded mainly by princes, being referred to as a prince and being assumed he's a guy. He's just okay with it and wouldn't change anything, does that make sense-

At first I didn't have the intention to make him trans, but it just sounds trans so- He's trans, yippie!

11- One thing I never understood in the Fionna and Cake comic is that it says Cake made Flame Prince's outfit… but how the hell did she manage to make unburnable clothes for a fire elemental and so fast too. Right now I'm thinking that she just showed him a sketch for an outfit and he shaped his fire into “clothes”, I don't know. That's where half of his wardrobe comes from.

12- Would gasoline be the equivalent of an energy drink to him? Because I'm starting to think it would. He can drink gasoline.

13- I'm still thinking about what his actual name would be,, , Phoebus sounds okay, but I also like others like Phoenix or Felix. Apollo is also on my suggestion list, since the god himself is associated with light and music, and it fits him considering FP is also a DJ. One day I'll have that figured out.

I realise it's probably not a very standard reaction in this kind of situation, and also that it probably will not be like this again in the future, after I have done the same song and dance over and over again. But for my first time, it felt really good^^

Had to do it again this week with a new group, and this time, I forgot on the first day, so I slipped it into my presentation on the second day, when I was discussing gendered statistics. Didn't make a big deal of it, just made sure everyone got it, and moved on with the presentation.

Initial looks from everyone, and uncomfortable wariness from one guy, but by the end of it, people were too busy feedbacking the presentation. We have a good group vibe going and I'm accepted into it, so essentially it has the same effect without any personal effort on my part.

I know it can look different from the outside, especially to other queer people who probably have very different experiences (catering to straights, pet enby, etc.). And I realised getting into a car with a guy I don't know might be dangerous the moment I closed the car door, so maybe don't do that?

I think what it comes down to is that I do not (yet) have any of the negative experiences a lot of my queer friends have, which makes me a lot more trusting. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. We'll see.

I am also not a teenager or in my twenties anymore, which is probably when most people experience coming out for the first time. I already know who I am and what I am capabale of, I know myself and my worth to the world, and I already came out once to my people as asexual. In other words, I already have a very good sense of my identity apart from being nonbinary.

There is no urgency in the exploration of this newly-ish discovered part of me, no pressing need to define it right now, or be defined by it through other people. It took me 30+ years to get here, what's a few more years of gentle experiments?

Also, I am snake sec, so not giving strangers insight into essential parts of me to protect myself feels entirely natural. It has different connotations in this matter though, which is one reason why I am experimenting with being more open about it, now that it has clicked into place for myself.

Earlier today, I sent the following message to the VL.

"Ugh, the ETHICS of it all!"

I was torn between three votes: Michael, Alex, and Colin.

Michael was the obvious vote - he betrayed EVERYONE (on our side).

Colin was the strategic vote - and also an absolute snake-in-the-grass.

Alex - Alex was the vote causing me angst. I wanted to keep my word to him. I did. Not just because I don't like striking first (which is terribly gendered behavior and I need to get over it) but also because I just do. As I've said before I wanna play a heroes game.

But here's the deal, yo! And I've said it before.

I'm not gonna strike first, but I will strike back. (And this goes double when it's someone I care about)

Now, obvs. I forgave Jack for two reasons. 1) Cuz he's playing to my ego and calling me 'auntie' and I'm a superficial slut and 2) because I truly believe the guy doesn't have a malicious bone in his body and he got played.

I will also add that I obviously would've had an issue voting against (for?? what preposition works here) Kaleigh as well even if she hadn't been immune.

(SIDENOTE - Fuck me with a rusty pocket knife I just read the challenge)

But - Kaleigh and Alex voted against me here . . . and that means all bets are off. I didn't write their name before, and I wouldn't've, but I have no problem doing so now. Probably moreso Kaliegh than Alex as she stole my 1/2 an extra vote (albeit Alex told her about it).

I am 0 for 3 in trusting my gut this week and if I were even 1 for 3 I would be in such a different spot in this game. So that kind of sucks to think about. Kaleigh has an idol and if I was right with my intuition on Eman MAYBE there's still hope but it doesn't feel like anyone from the other side is gonna try and shake things up (or talk to me today LOL) who knows what will happen. Whatever. The chat between me, Kaleigh, and Michael last night was the most fun I've had in this game so far so I'm glad that happened before one of us potentially goes.

Things are getting dicier as the game continues on. I’m gonna have to make a choice to flip but tonight is not the night to do it especially with the amount of disadvantages I’ve got going on. Michael has saved me once so I feel like I owe him at least to know if folks are gunning for him.

See, people think I'm not perceptive, or that I don't notice things, but my anxious ass is constantly thinking. I'm pretty sure that I'm the one being left out of the most conversations happening in this game right now. The only (active) alliance chat I'm in right now is Hot Girlz, but it's late in the game, there's definitely more Alliance chats out there, and aside from the fact that I need to step up my game, it's kind of making me think about who's aligning with who. Right now I'm pretty sure Tony and Michael are working together still, it's smart too since nobody would expect them to be working together, and it means Tony would have the power to flip whenever he wants. Eman and Champ and Tony i think are working together closer than she's leading me to believe, but only because nobody but Champ told me about Tony losing a vote, so she had to know somehow. This has got me thinking that I'm gonna have to step up my gameplay and maybe choose my loyalties a bit better. Obviously Kaleigh Michael and Alex are working together still, but everybody kind of knew that already.

I think i need to put in more work with the rest of the tribe, and maybe get some alliances going, since I'm not in a great position right now. I'm honestly not in too many alliances and that's kinda upsetting. Kaleigh and I have a weird Romeo and Juliet thing going on where we're both in opposing alliances but we're still talking tea about past shit or cool stuff the others have done during tribal or just in the game in general. I'm hoping maybe there's the chance for she and I to start working together again, but who knows.

And Colin is in purgatory and I wouldn't put it past him to send a disadvantage if not to me to my side.

So, what's a human to do.

Option A - fuck immunity, pray you wind up in purgatory where you can either send advantages to your side or fuck up the other side because you sure as shit don't wanna wind up on the jury, but at the same time it's pretty certain you're going to be voted out if somehow "The Other Side"™️ can garner enough votes.

Option B - Fight like hell for immunity and take whatever stacked disadvantages come with it. Even if those stacked disadvantages mean losing your vote. Even if those stacked disadvantages mean potentially fucking yourself over for future rounds.

Now. . . wouldn't it be funny if "The Other Side"™️ knows that you're fighting like fuck for immunity . . . because, after all a) you need it and b) you're the type of person who will fight like hell and c) you're also the type of person who will fight like hell for their people and the prospect of a SECOND immunity is extraordinarily tantalizing.

So, in order to try to rob you of that advantage someone on "The Other Side"™️ also steps up.

Aha is more of the "human" end of aeon spectrum, so them having a human figure on the splash art makes sense.

The figure being obscured in general could also allure to them obscuring their "humanity" with pure chaos, a way to keep distance, and like you said: acting from the shadows

The way their hands are placed is reminiscent of how one would have their hands positioned to offer someone something, yet still keeping them close to themselves

When it comes to cards my first thought was actually not gambling, but magicians! Magicians often use cards as props in their tricks. While I think that those can still represent both here, I'm leaning more towards the "magician" variant. Aha offering us all those wonders, performing, while they persona is in the shadow since they are not the focus, what they provide is.

We can also tie them having an obstructed form to how sampo is designed

Sampo's model has a VERY simple silhouette, which is not something hoyo normally goes for with their designs, so we can assume it's deliberate to some extent.

The jacket he wears has a similar shape going on to how a ringmaster coat looks like, which just fits perfectly knowing his role so far in the story

His design gives off that feeling that he's trying to contain himself in - the amount of straps and the general structure. Think of it as a way to contain the chaos

The "obscurity" when it comes to Sampo's design works in more ways than just how the outfit is structured to "keep it all in", he has a very similar design language to Acheron, a confirmed nihility emanator (snake skeleton motif, shoulder piece, white parts of the hair, etc.)

It sort of looks as if he deliberately was trying to look like a nihility follower, which fits with the idea that Emanators often hide their true identities, sometimes even posing as if they were on another path (based on what boothill was saying in the beginning of 2.2 main quest)

Speaking of Boothill

What personally stood out to me the most was: the way he was describing the Elation Emanator he stumbled upon

According to him it looked no different to other fools (in context: other masked fools) and he was able to get it drunk - so it's safe to assume that the Elation Emanator was human or at least has human like appearance

But the most peculiar thing is the way that he described the emanator as "it"

I have a feeling that it's not just to keep the gender ambiguous, for that just "they" could be used, as on previous occasions

The "it" feels as if Boothill had that association that the Elation Emanator was not - in fact - really human

(sidenote: I don't think "it" pronoun is in any way dehumanizing, I myself use it/it's as well, here I'm just talking about it in context of what Boothill was saying and how "it" is used in that specific instance)

We can see the "it" pronoun being used in game before, and one specific example of that is the "curio hacker" occurence

Do I even have to elaborate on how much "sampo vibes" it has?

He is being described by his hair so often for a reason, sometimes it's described as "dark-blue" , sometimes just as "blue", so naturally he's the first character that comes to mind when reading this occurence

Not only that: the behavior of the being in said occurence is reminiscent of how Sampo acts.

The occurence revolving around "hacking" can be somewhat tied to the theory that Elation powers revolve around reality manipulation

well, is it really a theory at this point if it's mentioned in game? It's mentioned as Aha doing that, but who's to say that Elation Emanators wouldn't have similar powers?

It is said that masked fools believe that manipulation of reality is possible

And "reality manipulation" would be a good way to describe what sampo is doing: him performing small actions that have a great impact on the story, his actions breaking the "rules" of the world he lives in, etc

Ugghh its like almost5tam and my brain is a mush because I just woke up but ughhh quick roundup of other stuff I'm too eepy to elaborate on rn:

Sampo and Aha parallels with the way they behave

sampo having blue hair with blue being, ironically, the color of sadness, melancholy and it being his main characteristic despite it all

Sampo being selfless in his elation with our, the players, enjoyment being his priority even if it's at the cost of him being the punching bag basically

Aha's head not really being visible in the splash art, they might as well have green eyes and blue hair and pronouns for all we know idkfj

the human form Aha took while being on the express was a masculine one (pom-pom refers to the person who blew up the train in half as "a guy")

note: this is my own interpretative opinion — it’s fine if you don’t agree! i know a lot of people don’t subscribe to elation!sampo theories, just as a lot of people do. this is an analysis i’m doing for fun and i understand there are many different & valid interpretations people can have about this. thanks! 🪐

First, let’s look at the splash art itself:

Our eyes are immediately drawn front-and-center to two masks reminiscent of the comedy and tragedy masks from greek theater — however, instead of one smiling and one frowning, both appear to be laughing.

The other masks, which lay in the shadowed background, are the ones frowning. Note how the spotlights and coloring draw our attention to not just the laughing masks, but the masks themselves (more on this later).

A popular image of this splash art is one cropped down to only the laughing masks, showing that most people’s idea of Aha’s “face” is, in fact, centered around the front-facing masks:

However, upon closer look, we can see a variety of other objects at play, including the frowning masks:

The one on the right is specifically interesting because it also seems to have a spotlight on it. Despite not being front-and-center, its frown is still illuminated, perhaps suggesting a “multi-faceted” appearance or personality (even performative sadness or pain).

Other notable objects include: confetti, flowers with eyes, a coin purse in the shape of a mouth, eyeball-shaped candy, a toybox moon with a face, an owl-cat perched on a circus ball, a strange white bird with human legs and a top hat, the aforementioned frowning masks in the background, and, most notably, several playing cards.

The playing cards indicate a red 5 with an upside-down laughing face, a red heart with a frowning face, a black H with a frowning face, a potentially black 7, and a black pi (which might be a roman numeral 2, but since the 5 was not in roman numerals, my bet is on pi) with a smiling face.

While I do think most of these objects are supposed to be fun little trinkets for the sake of being fun little trinkets — like the circus balls and confetti — the playing cards, coin purse, and shadowed masks stand out to me as potential links between Aha and a physical avatar.

The playing cards have connotations to gambling, money, and deceit, with their unconventional markings tying into Aha’s multiple “masks” and ever-changing persona.

The coin purse signals further associations with gambling and money, with the mouth adding a layer of consumptive desire.

The shadowed masks, as somewhat mentioned before, heavily imply the existence of contradictory emotion behind Aha’s “facade” — a pain or sadness hidden by the flashy lights and faces.

Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, behind all of this gaudy glamor is a silhouette, easily missed for the bright colors of the smiling masks’ spotlight:

This silhouette is the most widely-circulated clue I’ve seen as to Aha having a physical, humanoid form.

While it may be difficult to make out at first glance, the shape of a human is undoubtedly there, complete with a jawline, neck muscles, biceps, and hands with the palms facing up.

To bring back the detail mentioned earlier, something important to note is that the spotlights draw our focus to the masks rather than the silhouette, manipulating us into only seeing the front-facing objects rather than the person beneath.

This diversion could very well speak to a more literal diversion in Aha’s form — a misdirection where They don’t want others to know Their true identity, so They throw the spotlight on others while They operate under the radar, away from prying eyes.

So, how does Sampo factor into all of this? Beyond the fact that a shady, somewhat pathetic underworld merchant on a remote snow planet is a great alias for “operating under the radar” in terms of the wider universe, let’s start with the silhouette itself, which bears a striking resemblance to Sampo’s E6:

As you can see, they seem to have similar jawlines, collarbones, and shoulder lengths. To me, it very much looks like an inverted version of the E6.

Additionally, the silhouette proper seems to have a broad upper body that tapers near the hips, which fits Sampo’s build. However, this connection alone isn’t enough to make a solid theory, so let’s continue.

I mentioned several key objects earlier, like the coin purse, masks, and playing cards. While these individual marks could apply to other characters (i.e. Aventurine & coins, Sparkle & masks), Sampo is the one that checks every box combined.

Who has an obsession with money (cash ➜ coins)? Sampo. Who is always smiling and hiding his true feelings (putting on a mask)? Sampo. Who is always playing a master game of disguise and manipulation to get what he wants, even if it seems he is “losing” at times (cards)? Sampo.

While I do admit Aventurine could also fit most of this criteria, it is important to note that Sampo is the only one to check these boxes while also being directly affiliated with the Masked Fools, a faction that worships Aha the Elation.

Additionally, we have already received a pretty intensive exploration of Aventurine’s backstory in canon, so I think it’s safe to say he walks the path of Preservation and is mostly affiliated with the IPC.

Sampo, however, walks the Path of Nihility, which in my mind has a lot of overlap with Elation. (I tend to see “Nihility” and “Elation” as existing on two separate ends of the “presentation of meaninglessness” spectrum, with Nihility as pure existential stagnation and Elation as pure existential chaos. As such, it’s easy for me to think of someone potentially going back and forth between Nihility and Elation since both Paths can place heavy emphasis on similar ideas.) Nihility is also the Path often associated with those who have something to obfuscate about their identity (ex. Welt & his past, Acheron & her memory, Kafka & “destiny”).

Overall, I think Sampo checks the most boxes if we are operating under the assumption that Aha has a physical avatar.

This isn’t even touching on the conversation between Sampo and Sparkle during the 2.0 Trailblaze Mission where he refers to himself as an “old timer,” or any other clues like his voicelines (looking at you, “everyone has a colorful past, wouldn’t you say?”) and fourth-wall breaking.

However, it is also possible that all these pieces of evidence can be used for the Emanator!Sampo theory — the different masks and coins in this case could resemble Aha’s Emanators, or a kind of shared or split consciousness that uses parts to make the whole. If we’re going based on that, my money is on this mask in the background being the one to represent Sampo, since the eyes/eyebrows are an expression he often makes:

This could break into several other theories, but the two that first come to mind are A. Sampo & the other Emanators are Aha’s “collection” of what They consider to be practical jokes or props, or B. These separate objects represent different parts of Aha’s consciousness or being — i.e. the parts that make the whole.

(Side Note: In this case, I would attribute Doll!Sampo to the coin purse, as it lines up with the Aha Stuffed Toy occurrence and Sampo’s name as a reference to Finnish mythology! Who knows, maybe he’s both?)

Additionally, there is always the chance of a divide between the silhouette and masks, with the potential of a silhouetted Sampo being a “background” entity occupying a different form than the “full” masks of Aeon Aha. (There can even be places of overlap between Aha! and Emanator!Sampo, so the two are not mutually exclusive!)

Whatever the case, I think there are many strong leads in the Elation!Sampo theory, especially including the ones in the splash art described here. Even though so many possibilities are open at this point, I think Sampo’s identity being closely intertwined with the Elation is a plausible interpretation of canon. However, these are still unconfirmed theories, so that doesn’t mean they’re 100% guaranteed (though I think they have a good chance!).

He is soft, he is sweet and he can be an absolute snake. He'd be the really petty type in this kind of trope and oh my god do I love that. So sassy to you at all times, but as soon as that romantic tension starts to appear he'd be completely lost and flustered.

I think having Shinwon as a friend would include a lot of casually hanging out together, chilling on the couch or having cereal together at 3am. You'd grow so comfortable and get so used to sharing space. I think it would just naturally develop from there and someday you realize that maybe waking up in the same bed and cuddling and kissing is not something friends do.

I'm not sure if Shinwon would have enemies per se, simply because I feel like he'd just leave you be if he doesn't like you. But there's so much potential for misunderstandings with him, so I think a story where you one-sidedly think that he hates you while he just doesn't care that much (or even likes you/finds you interesting) seems fitting.

Hui

I can really see him having a best friend trying to take care of him while he's exhausted and overworked. And then in the midst of being drowsy and tired and comfortable accidental confessions happen...?

For enemies-- Maybe more like a rival thing? Both of you would be desperate to win, but while you see nothing but a rival in him, he'd also see you as an inspiration to work harder and would still be able to genuinely congratulate you if you won.

Hongseok

It just so happens that my best friend and I are having childhood friend!Hongseok brainrot these days, so I can really picture this so well. He'd be super protective of you and get pouty if you spent too much time with other people (read: too little with him).

But I can also picture something like a rivalry. Hongseok is competitive and ambitious and he likes to win. He would see it as a friendly rivalry while you'd grow to dislike him more with each time he beats you. He'd always play fair, even if you didn't which would frustrate you even more.

How do you plan your stories? Like characters, character dynamics, relationships, personalities, plot, storyline, etc etc??

!!! i'm a hardcore plotter & i love this question. it is however very complicated and will be very long. also i assume this is a "how do you do this, i would like Advice" type question so i'll both be describing my process and some little advice tidbits. Also usual disclaimer that i'm Just Some Guy on the internet and what i say might not work for you.

(oh also i have a post right here about plotting when you haven't before & my "plotting levels", which could be relevant?)

CHARACTERS:

i have a post that describes my character-making process a bit here, but to half-quote: "I find their “life saying”, which is basically the saying they live by, & find what makes them break it. Then i find their motivations, deepest fear, biggest want, and some personality traits. Then i consider their nonsense vibes, sexuality, age (maybe) and gender, then let them run around in my head doing stupid shit until i know them. Then they get a name, and are gently lowered into the story and the chaos i have created." (i added the bolding so you can see the steps. Also these don't have to be in order but typically lowering-into-the-story is last and life saying is first.)

By "nonsense vibes", i mean random little things that make me think of them. Once again shamelessly stealing from myself, i gave angel's nonsense vibes as an example: "bowling alley carpeting shirt pattern. Eat the rich. Black and white snakes. Girls bite back. the devils are here. Bring a knife to a gunfight. Shiny pink aviators. Cinderella gone wrong. Pineapple pizza just to be contrary. A sign that reads 'con artist!' in glitter." yk? It helps me think of them as An Entity for some goddamn reason.

Also!!! letting them run around in my head is a VERY important part of the process!!! i currently have a "golden heists" character prancing around. i don't know her name but i know she hates cheese and stabs people. Most nights i fall asleep to little nonsense scenarios with my characters; they'll never happen in canon (whether it's because it wouldn't fit plot-wise or it's literally impossible such as wifi and GFS characters) but it helps me SO MUCH to let them just... exist. Like mental fanfic of your own work.

(I don't actually think up backstory as backstory? it's like plot to me. i'll explain that later though)

PERSONALITIES (under the cut so i don't clog dashes):

my personality process is... incredibly informal. I start with the first character i think up (they DONT have to end up being the MC), and pick a handful of traits. Let's use... serious, wry, observant, hypervigilant, & quiet. Similar personality traits tend to group together. (it is possible to have, say, a loud and serious character, but it's harder.)

So i have my first character, then i make a second that kind of mirrors that one--let's have a goofy, fun, easygoing, loud girl. LG (loud girl) and CH (cheese hater) are almost like foils. But how do i add a 3rd/4th/whatever character, you ask, if that's the way i make them? i take more traits that aren't being used (and some that are!!! it's always good to re-use traits, just not entire personalities). So i'll make a selfish, aloof, money-driven, analytical little bastard of indeterminable gender. AB (analytical bastard), LG and CH aren't going to be my only characters, but i think you get what i mean now. I then shove the three of them through my character making process.

CHARACTER DYNAMICS/RELATIONSHIPS:

so you have characters!! but how do they interact with each other? this is where personalities are really important to know. Think about your IRL friends & people who annoy you; why? why is your dynamic like that?

In Six of Crows (when possible, advice posts should reference published books, not just their own wips), Inej does not like violence. kaz, on the other hand, sees violence as a great tool to be used liberally. This fuels many of their interactions, because inej is fundamentally someone who wants to be a pacifist, and kaz is not.

in my wip, Golden Heists, it's clear that LG, CH, and AB are going to have areas where they get along and areas where they don't. LG is cheery and nice, so AB will probably be annoyed by that, but also use it to their advantage. Being aloof and being serious can be quite similar, so CH and AB will understand each other's dislike of pointless chatter or long conversations. however, CH will probably find AB's selfishness and drive for money a bit grating.

Also, think about how they're connected. Why do they know each other? Childhood bffs, co-workers, one saved the other's life... etc. And why do they stay around each other? they're forced to, they like each other's company, they need to work together on something, one is mentoring the other, etc.

If by "relationships" you meant romantic ones... sorry bud, i don't know what the fuck i'm doing, i'm aro as hell. I tend to create people who's dynamics are 'they're friends, yay' & then make them Smooch. But i think @she-who-fights-and-writes has something on that.

PLOTTING YOUR PLOT:

i have some basic steps: 1) daydream. 2) think "lol this would be cool" or "lol this would be FUCKED UP" about one daydream. 3) think "hmm.... story idea". 4) repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 with more specific situations in the story. Branch off from more and more daydreams until i have a bunch of little scene ideas. 5) start an outline--how i do that is in the post i linked wayyy up top. 6) do step 4 even more.

seriously, daydreaming is SO SO helpful. it's absolutely at least 80% of my plotting process--the other 20% is just writing it down as a bullet-point outline. Don't let anyone tell you that daydreaming is a useless part of your day. As a writer, it's incredibly valuable. (Also! write down your daydreams. i promise you're not going to remember that thing that's 'so cool, i'll definitely remember it in the morning...')

Also, since i usually think up complex characters before complex plot, (because i like characters best), a lot of my plotting is thinking "ok, i have these people and their personalities, and i have the basic things that kick the plot off/the basic big events. now what the fuck do these bastards do that gets us through the story?" I string it together like one big mess. And don't be afraid to plot out of order!! as long as you know roughly where things go by the end of outlining, you can leave wiggle room. (I don't even write in order, but that's a topic for another day.)

STORYLINES:

i assume this meant "plotting/planning/putting multiple storylines in one story at once". And it's a very important thing!!

Most stories have a main storyline and then subplots. In Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Cycle, the main plot is finding Glendower. Subplots include Adam getting away from his family, Henry and his backstory, Ronan and Cabeswater, Whelk and Czerny, and Maura in the cave thingy.

When juggling storylines, i suggest keeping some sort of chart or graph to make sure you're not giving a weird amount of time to a subplot that doesn't need it, or neglecting a plotline that needs attention. You don't want to focus on a subplot so long that people forget what the Actual Point of the book is. Also, make sure they're connected in some way. Whether it's an important aspect of the character's life, an off-shooting problem from the main problem, or something else, you want your subplots to still feel like the same book.

BONUS: you didn't ask about this, but backstory:

i do backstory kind of at the same time as plot & characters. Like... in the middle, but more with plot. Because to me, backstory is just "plot that happened before the book starts". I do it the same way--basic concept (for GH: someone Did A Crime), what characters did to influence it (didn't run fast enough, were arrested), daydream & come up with new shit (the crime was arson), repeat.

I tried to make the stuff like character dynamics applicable to drafting too, btw. Also, don't feel the need to plot Literally Everything if that's not what works for your brain! The user only has a limited time to be in their animal form before they start going feral, if the person is angry or has a different strong negative emotion in animal form, the fast they can become feral (once the user becomes feral they will not remember anything until they have calmed down or are somehow distracted), if the user becomes feral for too long they will not be able to transform back unless they are hurt tremendously or their hatred may take a physical form and eventually kill them from the inside (I guess look at the demons from Princess Mononoke to get an idea of what that is).)
