Progress update
wow look at that I forgot to update on here :3 Anyway, we've made some decent progress. We've made it roughly 35 minutes or so into the musical when it comes to timing and a lot of the lyrics/dialogue. As expected, lots of it can come from the sub of the anime. However some of it cannot, as characters and timelines were changed for the musical (which is fair). I don't really know if its super productive to like.. give specifics? But we have the musical broken into 19 chapters, which is how the Blu-Ray distribution splits it up. We're into chapter 7. Many of the songs are okay, but more complicated scenes like introduction of the scouts or the vets talking (as they weren't introduced at this point in the show), are more complicated and will take time/ a bit of guesswork. That's all I've got. Like I said before we might end up making a way to access these WIP SRT files but I don't know the best method of doing so at the moment. Chao!

Almost done with my Wakfu rewatch so I went to pull up Dofus since I plan on watching it next… they took down all the eps with subs and put them all back up without any subs… not English not French just no subs. AUGH
They have autogenerated captions but with all their little fantasy names that’s clearly not going to work well.
#honestly I can do it but I’m gonna get fatigued after a few eps if I don’t even have French subs#so I’ll need to take more breaks#legitimately I kinda would’ve preferred to watch wakfu with French subs cause I could’ve understood#most of it and the English subs on Netflix are clearly the dub closed captions and are not reflective of what’s actually being said#legitimately was watching an ep today where someone said something along the lines of ‘a true hero never rests’ and the subs were like#‘no rest for the wicked’#also times where ppl are talking that don’t get any subs or subs when nobody is talking#but hey who needs French subs for the French show there’s Spanish and English subs!#oh god speaking of the Smurfs 2021 are even worse (also on Netflix)#you can watch the show in French#and have French subs#but they’re the French translation of the English dub#for NO reason#literally what purpose#I have watched this show in French with French closed captions they exist#why did you need a whole separate translation of the show

must be the masochistic bone in me that i think about the Merlin’s ending and i think “wow i need to rewatch Merlin”, why do i like to suffer like that.
#i have the 4 first seasons on DVDs so at least it's accessible#i should buy season 5 one day but it's sad#bc the coffer i have for the four first season is sooo pretty it'll stand out#.... though ineed to test if my DVD player is still eating up my DVDs first :(#and my real problem is that i hate that the only subs are in French#at least i can listen to the Eng Dub but man#the translation is so off that it bothers me to read with French subs#i'm so upset DVDs don't let me just use Eng close caption like come on.#when i started my Eng Uni our teachers were recommending us to just watch shows with close captions when we could#to get used to the sound and words and everything#it's such a free way to learn a language#and half of French's DVDs will not bother#they're just like 'be grateful we even included the english audio.'#disgusting behavior truly. smh.#ichatalks

Been watching a lot of Youtube lately and being driven crazy by the subtitles of some of my fav channels. Some of these are so very clearly wrong, who wrote these, what trash headphones must they have to mishear these words the way they do.

she winced slightly as the anti septic wipe stung the raw skin. no matter how many times she had patched herself up, it never ever got any less painful but at least her technique was improving, practically an invisible stitch. just another scar for the collection in the end.
with a heavy exhale she sank into the couch, the light glistened off her pale skin as it caught the fine coating of sweat covering her figure. she pushed back her hair as Selina caught her attention once again.
" you don't have to keep the act up with me. I spent years studying how to read body language, and you are very good at hiding how terrified you are; but I know that look in your eye. if you wanna talk it out, I'm all ears. no bat, just Kate. "
the highway drifts by in familiar flashes. and she sees the batmobile whizzing at them both at a roaring speed, watch it in the distance crash into the side of the bridge and then when she blinks again the sight is gone, gone like it never was and never will be again. she’s clinging with a relentless grip that refuses to let up. her whole body is immensely tight. she tries to push away the memory (not a memory, she reminds herself, but a phantom from a place she will refuse to know, from another world or timeline, horribly, she thinks, but it’s the fucking drugs—)
“oh don’t you dare fucking arrest me.”
why are they going to the rh kane building? cat’s eyes widen to dinner plates as the bike rides smooth, pupils too big to even express. they eliminate the tender brown that’s barely skirting the edges. a strangled sound of panic crawls out of her throat and she tries to keep her eyes everywhere and anywhere else. anywhere, anything, let anything else, she’s too afraid of what she’ll fucking see but why—
“you really better have a fucking sparkling reason for this.”
the bat moves to hold onto her and in spite of her tone and the creeping discomfort she finds her limbs move in accordance and obedience, in perfect call and response. elevator. fuck. fuck, elevator.
she hates elevators. they always feel helpless and panicky and it closes and every single nerve in the cat’s body is on fire and penthouse, that’s a word she keeps saying, penthouse, penthouse, it’s half sing-song to keep herself level. there’s a panic living inside her that’s taken root as intimately as a dog might trot into a home uninvited and declare its bristling self the new master with jaws and jowls. that dog is a vicious thing, antithetical to the cat and yet the cat precisely. she counts her own breaths and feels the world stop moving, something encasing her, the loss of warmth and the presence of gravity.
a bell tinkles. selina knows because her goggles route this change in the environment into her good ear and she blearily lifts her eyes from the couch, taking in the decor. everything makes sense suddenly, when kate kane looks at her without the presence of a cowl.
“diamond clear. perfect reason. please don’t fucking arrest me. i’m so high. just give me a head start.”
she is absolutely wildly terrified. she can taste how acrid that fear is in her throat.
“—sorry. fuck. yeah. water. —me? fine. never been better. the abyss and me are good buddies, it’s just a friday night, baby.”
she peers long down the hall and past it and back to the darkest corner of her childhood bedroom where bruce’s parents died outside her window. she thinks back there and she finds herself back here, her body absolutely fucking aching. it’s too warm to even express.
“nice place.”
it’s all she can choke when words fizzle out. right before she thinks the next sentence might drop her dead.

whenever i watch a show in japanese licensed by netflix with their default subs im like... who translated this
#personal#netflix's translations are about as accurate as their closed captions which is to say they're like vibes based#usually the vibe of the line is more or less preserved but like the words are just completely wrong#idk dont come at me if you sub for netflix i get everyone has their own preference for literal translation vs interpretive translation#and subbing anime doesn't pay well so i get that translators may not have much time to spend polishing a translation#but sometimes i feel like the lines are changed around for no real reason?#like even short lines that are only a few words?#also sometimes they add a bunch of stuff to a short line which makes it hard to read the whole subtitle before it disappears#just like y tho

#Ella face#Ella life#also THANK GOD FOR CHEAP TUESDAY TICKETS AND RECLINER SEATS#I would not have been able to make it without the recliners bc I'm still recovering from gall bladder surgery#still sad about there being a huge family stalling the counter so I couldn't ask for a closed caption screen thing#bc I would LOVE to have subtitles and I've never had closed captions at a movie theater so I was excited to see that as an option#but you have to ask a cinema worker to get the thing and also have to hand over some ID so they can hold it as ransom#so you bring back the closed caption thing#like it sounds a bit of a hassle but still cool#I can't wait for subs and I hope they translate the Spanish and not just have [speaking Spanish]

Problems with hardsubs/ closed captions (subtitles that are edited directly onto the video)
People often make them too small, or so big they literally cover the bottom half of the screen.
People don't understand that white text with no borders doesn't contrast with every background
I've literally never seen hardsubs transcribe sounds that aren't speech but are still necessary to understand the video, such as if a door has been closed off screen
People sometimes like to get ...creative with font choices.
Problems with open subs / open captions (subtitles that can be turned off and on)
Correct syncing? Lol
The chances of the video player deciding to spice it up and just turn off the subtitles are near 100%, leaving you wondering why everyone suddenly started speaking in simlish
Increasingly they are actually unedited auto captions 🤮
The switch to google them always requires that first you must answer these riddles three,
In conclusion hardsub makers understand that same language subtitles are an art even if most of the time it gives "graphic design is my passion", and open subs that don't even have the decency to have decent subtitle customisation options are so much worse to deal with that they make me seriously consider if the moving image was a mistake
