i got tired of 🐁 immediately after he talked about the gur, and the way it was framed was so obviously written by a white writer using racism as a set dressing rather than anything that the pc is able to engage with... rancid and it never got better. and he was really only giving "precocious 14 year old's Hot Edgy Tormented Vampire Oc" besides that.
and the fact that he has so much more dialogue than everyone else... absolutely grim state of affairs. i never ended up finishing act 3 because i got sad about wyll being so especially shafted. i don't think about bg3 very often now but i'm still salty about how they obviously picked the Most Racist Whitest Man as the developers' favourite.
Yeah like at the end of the day his racism is never addressed even in his “good ending” which is so…. Plus like you said the way he was the poster boy and not the literal son of the Duke and arguably the most plot relevant character… yeah I didn’t really care for him
#asks#he got racist once and I was tired of it lmfao 😭😭😭#also they literally tweeted about j*nns like two days ago idgaf what these devs have to say#(SpongeBob foghorn noise)

Weird question. Does anyone else remember the closing SpongeBob logo having a foghorn noise? Apparently it has a seagull noise as I've noticed rewatching the show, but I don't remember a seagull at all, DEFINITELY remember a foghorn. I used to get super scared because it was very loud. Mandela Effect?

Nautical Nonsense (1/?)
a/n: this started off as a really silly SpongeBob AU I had in mind about a year or so ago. I hope to god this doesn’t mean I’m writing second-hand SpongeBob fanfiction but yeah, I... yeah. It’s not meant to be serious, and it’s just, if anything, personal indulgence.
Each chapter’s title will reference the episode that inspired it, in case you wanna watch it and catch any references :)
Help Wanted
His morning alarm was a foghorn. A bold, bellowing, yet somehow strangely noble sound, which yes, was quite literally a foghorn.
Alfred Jones didn’t understand what made the noise so appealing. Was it the childhood he spent living by the sea? With the faint noise of ships and the crashing of waves against the shore lulling him to bed? A life by the coast with the smell of salt in the air, the taste of it on his lips after wading into the afternoon tide, the dreadfully parched state it left his hair?
Whatever it was, it sure as heck woke him up.
But no, today wasn’t the day to hit snooze and steal himself more time. He found himself springing out of the warmth of his sheets, padding off into the bathroom with a willpower not many people had so early in the morning.
“Today’s the big day, Gary!”
(Gary responded with a drowsy mew before letting his head flop back into the bedsheets.)
Yes, today was a big day indeed.
The getting-ready bit was easy. A quick shower and an adequate amount of teeth-brushing later, he was slipping into relatively-formal clothes and heading out the door, stopping to lift his weights for a bit because he had to be in top physical condition today, truly.
The real problem lied in the nerves that hit after he stepped out onto the welcome mat. What was otherwise a beautiful day, with cotton-candy clouds and skies so blue they warranted ukulele music to fit the mood, seemed crushingly large. Everything seemed so full of expectation to Alfred, who, to face the facts, wasn’t quite ready to be an adult.
And if anything, today, the big day, required of him to be an adult.
“I’m ready.” A chant under his breath, following his inhale and his exhale as he walked down the street with a bounce in his step, face set in determined stone when he was, in fact, not very ready.
And despite the “you got this!” text from Gilbert, a friend who wasn’t known for being awake in these early hours, Alfred still felt the heavy dread in the pit of his stomach.
He was applying for a job in what was easily the finest eating establishment ever established for eating.
He was applying to work at what stood right before him, in all its glory: The Krusty Krab.
Sure, it was a kitsch eatery themed in a way many others were, especially seeing as it was located in a seaside town like theirs, but oh. Their burgers, their fries, heck, even the soda anyone drank within the four walls of the restaurant was made ten times better.
Alfred wanted so desperately to work there.
“Oh god, I’m not ready.” Were the last words he murmured before shoving through the glass doors because he knew. Gilbert would slap him left and right if he gave up this opportunity.
(Unknowing to Alfred, of course, an existing employee had already begun to mourn his sanity at the sight of Alfred’s arrival. A certain neighbour of Alfred’s who thought work was the only place he could escape that loud, loud manchild.)
“Uh, Mr. Kirkland!”
Alfred seemed plenty oblivious to the audible groan from the cash register, where a dejected Roderich Edelstein buried his face into his palms.
He instead kept his eyes trained on the Mr. Kirkland mentioned, who stood staring at him with scraggly brows raised.
“Hi, I’m Alfred, I-”
Alfred liked to watch action movies. Especially the ones with the overdone special effects, where a flying kick could be slowed down so it seemed like years before the foot hit the enemy’s head.
Well, right now was something similar.
His view of Mr. Kirkland, along with Roderich who now seemed to be peering over the register, jerked like in the films, slowly shifting until it was way above him and he, a bit winded, had fallen to the ground.
Oh heck.
The red flooding to his cheeks came as fast as he’d scrambled to stand up, brushing off his clothes with a sheepish smile as Mr. Kirkland’s brows shot up impossibly high.
“Uh- Hello, permission to come aboard, Captain?”
Mr. Kirkland didn’t respond.
“Hah, tough crowd. Well, uh, I’ve been training my whole life for the day I join the Krusty crew!” Alfred managed a grin, “Couldn’t help but see the Help Wanted sign and, well, when do I start?”
Of all the things that could go wrong, every single one of them had managed to share the spotlight.
“Well, lad, it looks like you don’t even have your sea legs.” Was Mr. Kirkland’s response after what seemed like ages of silence. The accent made the message heavier than it was, slamming into Alfred with its rolled ‘r’s and overall piratey aura.
Well, Alfred supposed it was what he deserved for being cocky.
“It was like, a nail in the boards or something-”
“Well,” Mr. Kirkland sighed, carding his hand through his cherry-red hair as Roderich gave him a narrow-eyed look Alfred didn’t quite understand. “Look, lad, I’m sorry.”
“Mr. Kirkland, just one chance!”
What had Alfred done wrong? Besides the falling on the first impression and the excessive talking, there couldn’t have been anything barring him from being an adequate fry cook, right? Yet there he was, standing before the employer of his dreams, watching as his friendly neighbour Roderich gave Mr. Kirkland looks akin to those he’d give Alfred when knocking on his door over a noise complaint.
(Roderich’s violin pieces didn’t sound as elegant when accompanied by grating laughter and dimwitted squealing. He doubted the ambience of his workplace would be affected any different.)
“Listen-” Mr. Kirkland began.
The hiss of a bus slowing to a halt. “Uh-” Alfred threw a glance over his shoulder, turning back with a frenzied smile, “That’s a tour bus chock-full of people, I think you’d need the extra help, just try me out, will ya?”
And so Alfred gained himself the honour to wear the Krusty Krab cap, a white, blue-billed, anchor-adorned cap resting atop his blond locks as he flipped patties like there was no tomorrow.
Mr. Kirkland surely didn’t mind, no. After all, who could mind the sound of a ringing register and the smell of coins in the air? Roderich didn’t seem to mind either, what with the monotonous droning of his “may I take your order” and that secret smile hidden behind his deadpan demeanour.
(Roderich was not smiling.)
All was well that way.
Gilbert had taken him out to the movies that night and they’d stuffed their faces full of candy and cola, giggling up the driveway to Alfred’s house as Roderich watched, narrow-eyed, from his window.
“So you got the job!” Gilbert said.
“Yeah, I got the job!” Alfred shouted for what was nearly the eighteenth time that night. “I get to see Roderich all day now, isn’t it neat?”
Alfred and Gilbert sent a coupled wave in Roderich’s direction, through his window- neighbours to neighbour- and Roderich shut the curtains. Gilbert grinned, patting Alfred on the back.
“Don’t make new best friends, okay?”
“I don’t think I can, Gil.”
Alfred had always believed you could only have one best friend. The fact lied in the name, for only one thing could be the best and for him, it was Gilbert. Never mind the fact that the two were essentially polar opposites. So what if Alfred wanted to work a job and Gilbert was content playing video games in his house, living off his parents’ money? So what if Alfred wanted to explore the world, and Gilbert was content living under a rock? It just worked!
“Send me a postcard, Al.” He’d say, “Yanno, where you’re out in the desert or Brazil or something, bring me something nice.”
Yes, they were best friends, and nothing Alfred could think of could change that.
That was, at least, before he went to work on his fifth day at the job.
“Welcome to the Krusty Krab, my name is Roderich. May I take your order?” A voice that was as dead as the evening rush.
Alfred chewed his grin as he absent-mindedly spun his spatula. Evening hours were his favourite, because like a good story, every workday had a climax and every evening came with a resolution.
This was the resolution.
The sizzling died down, the last customer had walked in to order one last meal, and Alfred would prepare it, Roderich would serve it, and the register would ring, for the last time that day. The glass door would thud as the last customer pushed through it, and if Alfred was lucky, Mr. Kirkland would let him flip the We Are Open! sign.
Plus, Alfred could only go so long without wanting rest for his achy arms.
“Alfred, I need ten Krabby Patties to go.”
Blue eyes blinked. “Ten?”
A sigh and Roderich turned, narrow eyes glaring through the window into the kitchen. “I said ten, didn’t I?”
Ten was an awful lot. Nothing Alfred couldn’t handle during a lunchtime rush, but with arms as sore as his and a mind winding down with the sun on the horizon, it didn’t seem like something he really wanted to do.
But so be it, ten was ten.
He fished a patty out onto the stove.
“Forget it, Alfred, you don’t have to make that order.” Mr. Kirkland called from outside.
Alfred turned his furrowed-brow gaze to Roderich, who replied with a monotonous “whatever”.
Alfred turned the stove off.
“I’m a paying customer, I’ll have you know. I demand my ten burgers to go!” Another accent, this one a smoother lilt.
“Come flip the sign, Alfred lad.” Mr. Kirkland interjected. “We’re closed.”
Mr. Kirkland turning down a paying customer? Alfred slipped out of the kitchen, leaving the spatula on its little hook by the stove, swiping his hat off his head and holding it to his chest, “Sir, it’s only ten, I can make it, no problem.”
“It’s not about that, Alfred, just flip the darn sign.”
Roderich sighed from behind him, slipping out from his counter, a kitschy boat extension attached to the wall. He was quick to leave, not much for the drama unless it was on the television.
Alfred, however, was nothing if glued to the scene.
“Cute fry-cook,” The stranger flashed him a dry smile, to which Alfred responded with a red-faced grin, “Did you tell him what happened to the last one?”
Suddenly, Alfred didn’t feel like grinning anymore.
“Relax, lad, he didn’t die or nothin’.” Mr. Kirkland said, rolling his eyes, “He just left because Plankton ‘ere wouldn’t stop pesterin’ him.”
“Untrue!” The man whose name was supposedly Plankton shrieked in response.
Alfred’s head hurt.
He was never one for suspense. No, not suspenseful books or movies or stories his grandmother would tell him that had a climax further from the beginning than a few seconds. Heck, even school books they were forced to read, when showing even a sliver of suspenseful promise, he flipped to the last page and relieved himself. Alfred didn’t like suspense.
So naturally, it made sense that Alfred had bit his lip and made a meek interjection into what was blossoming into a full out one-sided screaming match. “Uh, who are you, exactly?”
Mr. Kirkland sighed, rubbing the space between his brows, “Go home, lad, don’t bother yourself with this.”
“Ah, you’re just scared he’ll take my side, aren’t you, Allistair?”
“Lock up on your way out, Alfred.” And Mr. Kirkland was gone, dragging the stranger by the collar until they were out through the glass doors and Alfred’s curious eyes caught another inaudible argument. Mr. Kirkland gestured, Plankton gestured more, and Mr. Kirkland was gone after one sinister point in Alfred’s direction, possibly a “don’t talk to him”.
Alfred slunk back into the kitchen, tossing the patty into the bin and cleaning his spatula in warm, soapy water. Surely this Plankton guy couldn’t be dangerous, right? Why would Mr. Kirkland just let him hang around, then? Alfred was a valued employee!
He patted the utensil with a towel, letting it hang on its hook before going out to the register. Even though Mr. Kirkland usually got the collecting-money job done the second after the last customer left, there was no harm in checking.
“Hello there, Alfred, was it?”
“You’re not supposed to be in here, we’re closed,” Alfred said shakily, checking the register. Empty.
He moved into the kitchen, hoping his lack of conversation would drive the stranger away, only to find upon his return with a soaked rag that Plankton was now seated at one of the tables, picking at the sleeve of his green sweater.
“You need to leave, sir.” It was a wobbly request.
“It’s awful mean of Allistair to leave you in here to clean up all by yourself, isn’t it, now?”
“It’s my job, I’ll be fine!”
“Well, let me help.” And Plankton was out of his seat, hand outstretched as Alfred reluctantly placed the damp rag in his palm. “I’ll clean the tabletops, I suppose you’ll sweep up?”
“Oh, uh yeah.”
Alfred liked to sweep. It put a lot of work in his arms, but it kept his hands dry and the floors neat. He definitely liked it better than cleaning tabletops- floors rarely had particles of what was inside someone else.
Plankton seemed to agree, judging by the downward curve of his lips as he placed the least possible skin contact into the dirty towel.
“So, Plankton-”
“Please don’t call me that.” The man who did not want to be called Plankton sighed, nose crinkling at a particularly hard ketchup stain. “I’d rather you call me Arthur, that’s my actual name.”
Arthur. The name suited him. Whenever Alfred thought of British people, the name Arthur was the first in mind, along with smooth, pretty accents and a mean sense of humour.
Arthur’s accent was smooth and pretty but he didn’t seem to be mean at all.
In fact, he seemed pretty nice as he was scrubbing down tables so Alfred wouldn’t have to. Not to mention using the word “please”, now that was nice if anything.
“Plankton doesn’t sound much like Arthur to be a good nickname.” Alfred pointed out.
Arthur shrugged, “Allistair has been calling me that since I was three, when we would play pirates.”
That was a cute thought. Alfred couldn’t help smiling at it, a small Mr. Kirkland with a piratey hat to match his piratey voice.
“He said it was because I was small, and always wore green.” Arthur paused, eyes drifting down to his green sweater, an action that pulled a laugh from Alfred’s lips. “I suppose I am still small and green.”
Alfred swept absent-mindedly, growing weary of the dull throb in his biceps. “How do you guys know each other?”
“My name is Arthur Kirkland, we’re brothers.”
Brothers! There was nothing dangerous about a brother. The knot between Alfred’s shoulder blades loosened a bit and he let himself smile, loosening his work uniform’s bright red tie. “In that case, I can go make you your order really fast, anything for the boss’ bro!”
“I can’t ask you of that,” Arthur said with a small smile.
Alfred mirrored the smile, putting his broom into the back closet and fetching himself another rag to help Arthur finish a particularly tough ketchup stain.
“Tell you what, how about I come by tomorrow, lunch? You can give them to me out back.”
The knot was back and a nervous chuckle passed through Alfred’s grinning lips. “Why’s it gotta be so secret?”
Wide green eyes.
Gary liked to eat off of Alfred’s plate when he wasn’t looking, especially when Gilbert would force them to watch horror movies and Alfred took to burying his face into his palms at a particularly quiet scene, the ones just before the jump scare.
Gary would walk onto him just then, nipping at the tub of popcorn in his lap.
He’d widen his eyes when Alfred caught him. It was kinda like what Arthur was doing just then.
Alfred just didn’t know what it meant.
“Um, Allistair is a bit mad at me, so I feel it would be best if I didn’t show my face- or that you didn’t tell him you were, uh, doing this for me.”
“Why is he mad?”
“Oh,” Arthur chewed his lip, letting his eyes glance the lock screen of his phone before coming back up to meet Alfred’s gaze. “You know, brotherly spats. Nothing serious. See you tomorrow?”
And he was gone, leaving spotless tables and a confused Alfred in his wake.
Alfred locked the doors of the Krusty Krab behind him, the cool evening air leaving goosebumps on his bared arms, left to the elements by the short white sleeves of his work uniform.
The floor had been swept, the money had been tucked away into Mr. Kirkland’s office and the sign had been flipped at last, but somehow, it didn’t feel like a resolution.
Instead, as he walked back to his house, waving “goodnight” towards Roderich’s window, who replied with a fond tug of his curtains, it rather felt more like the moments that warned him to flip to the end of the book. The parts of the story that climbed into a climax, suspense.
And Alfred’s stomach hurt.

Thoughts on the Spongebob Musical cast recording
Soo having seen the musical live twice, I’ve been dying for the recording for a long, long time. I’ve had to rely on a very low-quality audio recording for about a year but now that I finally have the original in my possession I can happily say that again, the Spongebob Musical remains one of my favorites and that’s from someone who is a big fan of Broadway.
I know next to nothing about the mechanics of music but here are my two cents anyway, comparing the soundtrack to what I saw live.
1. Prologue - So this is just a 30 second intro with the narrator and Sponge’s foghorn. What I noticed is that in the theater, certain actors sound a lot more like their characters on stage than they do in the recordings, whereas for others it’s the opposite. I thought Tom Kenny actually voiced the Narrator but in this track it’s obvious it’s a different guy. Doesn’t make it any less cool (as it helps distinguish the musical as its own), just noting.
2. Bikini Bottom Day - Ethan Slater sounds equally good on stage and in audio and I love that. I can finally hear the ukulele clearly in the beginning and it gives the song a lot more charm. Danny Skinner also pretty much sounds the same as Patrick. I am not too thrilled with some of the autotone in the soundtrack, tho. THEY DON’T NEED IT.
Also not used to Squidward’s intro not being interrupted by people in the audience bursting into laughter. Gavin Lee sounded exactly like Squid in the show but in the audio his voice is a bit higher-pitched, I suppose so he could have more better use of his vocal range.
Sandy’s Texan accent was toned down a bit in the soundtrack. And I’m sad ‘cause Krabs and Plankton’s actors have been replaced -- at first I was iffy about their voices but I quickly grew to love them because they still captured the essence of the characters, so it’s a shame they won’t be on Broadway.
Karen sounds more robotic.
I sorta miss Spongebob saying ‘hi’ to literally everything and wish they’d included that in the song.
I’m glad they cut out the needlessly expository parts like Krabs having to address his darling whale daughter as such.
Pearl sounds more like cartoon!Pearl here than on stage!
3. No Control - I LOVE THIS SONG OKAY. I LOVE PERCH PERKINS’ DEEP DEEP VOICE. The soundtrack version is pretty much perfect. Love the techno riffs (that weren’t as audible live). I just love when SB has his big “NO CONTROOOOL” moment.
Okay I kinda wish it was a bit louder because I want to rock out to it.
And Patchy not chiming in with his “AAAH” in the end is strange after being so used to that but I wasn’t expecting that to make it in, anyway.
4. BFF - This song is so cute and catchy and I love singing along to it. It really is the quintessential Plain White T’s song. Spongebob's and Patrick's voices go really well together.
5. When The Going Gets Tough - Sooo at first I didn’t dig this song when I watched it because there’s just so much going on and at times all the voices would get jumbled. But Plankton def sounds more Plankton-like and, well, the soundtrack version is A LOT more coherent so it’s one of my favorites now.
They added an extra line to Plankton’s burn to Mr. Krabs. Mr. Krabs' “I wasn't hatched yesterday” was taken out though, which is sad because I love that line.
6. (Just A) Simple Sponge - already heard this before the rest but to me this is still one of the better produced songs since it’s pretty much exactly the same as the stage version. No complaints here.
7. Daddy Knows Best - okay so apparently this song is hit or miss with fans but I ADORE it because of Pearl’s crazy vocals and Krabs’ catchy song. And the version in the soundtrack is even better! They changed Krabs’ beginning verse. The song sounds so much better because you can actually hear all the instruments and I love how it goes from some theme park tune to a rock power ballad.
Strangely enough Pearl’s crying sounded differently on stage.
8. Hero Is My Middle Name - This song was never one of my favorites and it’s odd because I loved Kinky Boots’ soundtrack, but you don’t quite hear the same explosive flair in this song. In fact it seems a bit too calm when the trio should be hyping themselves up in it.
9. Super Sea Star Savior - Didn’t like it in the play, grew to like it in the audio rip, but this song sounds reaaaaaally fantastic in the recording. They’ve really spiced up the song with a very upbeat arrangement and I wish they could’ve done that for the previous one, too. Danny sounds less Patrick-like but, well, he has to, to hit those killer notes so I’m not complaining.
(The FIGAROOO part reminds me of Waitress now).
10. Tomorrow Is – Beautiful on stage and beautiful in the recording, too. I think this one is the most classically “Broadway-sounding” tune among all of them, which seems obvious considering it's the only one that wasn't made by a recording artist. It's pretty much their version of One Day More except a lot more somber, which isn't something you'd expect from a Spongebob Musical. But it sounds gorgeous and everyone really gets to let loose here. A+++++++ to all their vocals.
11. Poor Pirates – this is one of the songs I don't necessarily crave to listen to because even though it's a very cute and funny opener for Act II, the visual gags (and seeing Patchy's plot unfold) are necessary to truly appreciate the song. Still, it's pleasant in its own way and I love Patchy's singing especially towards the end. I (sort of) wish Sara Bareilles had gotten to write a song with a more interesting theme but she did great with what she had.
12. Bikini Bottom Boogie – So... this is my least favorite song in the musical because it feels like Aerosmith just didn't try, sadly enough. Whereas everyone else tried to make their songs relevant to the characters/plot, this is just a random bop with vague references to underwater things. The singing is good, the tune isn't great, lyrics are eh.
13. Chop To The Top – Some lyric adjustments to this one, which didn't necessarily improve the song since there wasn't anything that needed to be improved tbh. I enjoy it and it's reaaaaally fun to jog to. I think people will appreciate if they see it live.
14. (I Guess) I Miss You – I wasn't too fond of this live since I felt like it killed some of the momentum. Aside from SB and Patrick's harmonizing and the “peas in a pod” line I didn't care for it, but the studio version sounds better and I like it a lot more here.
15. I'm Not A Loser – AND OF COURSE. I've not bothered to hide the fact that this is my UTTER FAVORITE and even without seeing it live it's just so incredibly amazing to listen to. The “HEY SQUIDWARD!!!” did not disappoint and the way the song just gets more and more ramped up is fantastic. One teensy nitpick I have is that I wish they'd included the initial stomp of the sea anemone (when they surprise Squid and scare him a bit). The added “...Okay” of Squidward is just icing on top of an already perfect cake. In the live version, he says “Okay” in When The Going Gets Tough. I guess they moved it here instead...?
I've listened to this song so many goddamn times it's not even funny. It's odd how it depresses me in the beginning then by the end of it makes me feel like I could take over the world.
16. Best Day Ever – pretty much exactly the same as in the play. It's such a beautiful, uplifting song and the Elvis part will never not make me crack up. Of all the songs to take from the show, this was truly the most appropriate one they could've chosen.
17. Finale: Bikini Bottom Day (Reprise) – Weirdly enough, this song contains the most changes compared to the original, lyric-wise. Krabs' original lyric pertaining to SB making him a ton of money is a lot more in-character but I guess they really want that feel good ending. And they changed Squid's line of complimenting SB on his dental hygiene ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) to instead him calling SB a “HERO” (my heart) which is adorable so I can't really complain.
18. Spongebob Squarepants Theme – I'll say it again: putting it at the end is perfect.
Random notes:
-Pearl and Squidward both cry in the middle of their songs
-Whereas SB laughs in his song.
-Patrick goes full on opera in his song.
-Random thought: how weird would it have been if they replaced all of Squid's tapdancing with squelching noises
-Sandy's songs all include copious amounts of sound effects.
-Had Krabs' retained his original line in the play, then he would've literally sung about money in every song he was part of.
-THEY DIDN'T INCLUDE BIKINI BOTTOM DAY (REPRISE) WITH SB AND GARY WHICH IS MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT ABOUT THE RECORDING BECAUSE I LOVE THAT VERSION
-I have listened to this album more than 20 times since I first got it

"It’s Still There."
748 words Hurt/Comfort Characters: Spongebob and Gary
Summary: Having an active volcano within walking distance from your house can be pretty freaky – especially after it almost killed everyone.
*audible shrug* i needed some good ol’ fashioned vent-writing to help me wind down. enjoy.
alternate title: nightmares are lame and spongebob talks to his pet a lot
Spongebob awoke with a start. Not unusual, considering his alarm clock was a giant foghorn.
Except his alarm clock wasn’t going off.
And it was three in the morning.
He sat up slowly, struggling to keep the blanket over his shoulders to ward off the chill winter waves that drifted through the open window, which bathed the room in a soft blue light. He arched his back, letting out a high-pitched yawn, trying to collect his thoughts and recall what exactly had caused him to wake up in the first place.
His turned his head, staring out the open window (maybe I should close that, he pondered), and allowing his gaze to settle on the town off in the distance – the view partly obscured by Squidward’s house. A sudden sense of relief washed over him, but he wasn’t quite sure why. He supposed he was just happy it was still there.
And then it hit him.
It’s still there.
A blurred image flashed across his vision, a distorted sound echoing in his head. The town on fire. Everybody screaming. Boulders crashing down around them. His friends…
He shuddered, dropping the blanket and letting it sit limply on his lap. He scooted back against the headboard and curled his knees into his chest. A breathy whine escaped his throat, and a quiet noise responded to it.
“Meow.”
Spongebob jumped, but immediately settled back into his curled position, his eyelids drooping down. “Sorry, Gary,” he muttered quietly, tucking his head down like a sea turtle into its shell.
Said snail proceeded to snail up the side of the bed, gently nudging Spongebob’s side before settling down next to him. “Meow.”
“I’m fine, Gare-bear,” he assured unconvincingly. “Just had a nightmare”
“Meow.”
“Yeah, it was that one,” he shrugged.
“Meow.”
“Not really.” He shifted to a more relaxed position, untucking his legs from his chest. “I’m just a little freaked out, I guess.”
“Meow.”
“No, it’s stupid,” he pouted.
“Meow.”
Spongebob let out a breath. “I guess I’m just worried, y’know?” He moved over, sitting on the edge of the bed and staring towards the window. “I mean, it’s not like we destroyed the volcano. It could still just erupt and we wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.”
Gary moved to sit on his lap and Spongebob gently ran his hand back-and-forth over his shell.
“Everything’s fine now, but what if it’s not fine tomorrow?”
Gary snuggled into his chest, purring.
“Maybe I should ask Sandy about it,” he rationalized. “She’s got all those monitors on it, so she’d probably know if anything was wrong.”
Gary backed up and gave him a look. “Meow.”
Spongebob shrunk back awkwardly. “Actually, I’ve only asked her three times.”
Gary rolled his eyes and went back to the floor, laying down with his shell leaned against Spongebob’s foot.
Several minutes passed, Gary was on the ground, asleep and relaxed. Whereas Spongebob was on his bed, still awake and anxious. He checked the time – 3:30AM. He’d gotten two hours of sleep, and he needed to be up for work in two hours. He was starting to regret the overtime he’d done that night.
A chill wave hit his face, and he remembered the window was open.
He stood up, careful not to wake Gary (again), and snuck over to the window. He looked out for a moment, scanning the horizon.
He saw the Chum Bucket – barren, save for a large “OPEN” sign lit up in front of it. Plankton must’ve forgotten to shut it off – everyone knows the Chum Bucket closes at eleven (exactly one hour after the Krusty Krab). Well, maybe not everybody knew, but Spongebob certainly did. Although he couldn’t see it from his house, Spongebob pictured the Krusty Krab, all locked up with a “Go away! We’re closed!” sign hanging on the front door. The tables empty, and the fridge stocked with ingredients to make the next day’s Krabby Patties.
His gaze drifted to the mountain looming in the distance.
If there is a next day.
He tensed up, a crease appearing between his eyebrows as he tried to get his attention hooked onto something less pessimistic. He looked back at the town, the buildings peeking over the horizon.
It’s still there.
Spongebob quietly shut the window and creeped back into bed. He pulled the blanket over his head and shut his eyes, letting the image of the distant town settle in his vision.
It’s still there.

A bit spoiler-y if you haven't seen the show or listened to the new recordings of the songs. So proceed with caution.

-ethan is using such a soft tone of voice and it's honestly perfect

-MY BOI PATRICK STAR
-"oOOO OOOO I want a verse!!!"
-I love the difference between his singing voice and the Patrick Voice (tm)
-the chorus harmonizing in the bg
-sQUIDY
-Gavin Lee sounds a little strange...like Squidward sounds like he could't care less about anything and is so resigned to his loud neighbors
-which...he is....but he sounds off idk. Still a good performance tho
-like with Pat, there's a distinction between his singing voice and speaking voice
-he sounds good though but not like the live performances....idk if that's good or bad
-the fart noise strikes again
-RIGHT INTO SANDY'S PART
-love the country track
-she sounds so nice 10/10
-that "daaaaAYYYYY" 10000/10
-they didn't include the explosion or like all of the dialogue that follows it but I like it. Keeps the flow of the song going
-KRABS
-THE WALKING NOISE
-plankton's voice is so deep and smooth, I love it
-KAREN'S "forever" WAS MADE TO SOUND COMPUTERIZED THAT WAS A REAL NICE TOUCH
-"CLeeeeeveeeeerr" melted butter
-I love krabs, Karen, and plankton singing together
-Squidward is so depressed 10/10

-they finish the song without being interrupted by the volcano, very nice choice
No Control
-the panic
-Perch Perkins could punch me in the face and I would thank him
-velvet voice. Pure velvet.
-sandy, sponge, pat, sandy, THE BABIES
-all of krab's parts sounds much better than the live versions, not gonna lie
-smooth-voiced plankton once again. He and perch need a duet but I think I'd actually melt from it
-kAREN
-I love the bg singing, heck yeah
-"the end. Is. Coming!"
-spongey
-ETHAN'S "WOOOOOH" OMG I WASNT READY
-there are 3 ticks instead of 2, that's interesting

-I've listened to this about 100000 times already
-but I'll do this anyway
-again, Ethan always sounds so pure
-he really nails the innocence of sb
-the bg chorus is fantastic
-I love all the references in this song
-Brendan Urie did a great job
-I really love how this song is in reference to krabs' opinion of sb. That's always been a really cool relationship dynamic
-sb is like a son to krabs and krabs is kinda a father figure? (I know sb has a dad but) sb is always looking to krabs for approval and when he looses it he gets real down (the second movie has a cool nod to this; "you were like an underpaid son to me")
-all these artists could've just written songs that these characters could sing, but they all wrote songs that these characters would sing. They all really nail the characters and I’m so grateful for that.

How to Make a Great MSP Video
Are you a mer who’s interested in participating in the Mermaid Sign Project? SQUEE!!! So glad to have you aboard!! **HUGS** I have a GOOD feeling we’re gonna make a LOT of magick here! ^_^
But.. are you a little lost when it comes to HOW make a good sign demo? Well.. no fear! Here're the basix of what we're looking for in the (water)ways of a great sign demo, broken down into a few easy steps & with a few guide-lines to help keep things uniform and fabulous! ^_^
Figure out what sign/s you wanna do- and learn that sign for your particular place of origin. :) Sign languages and lexicons vary from country to country, region to region. So you wouldn’t speak Turkish Sign Language if you lived in say.. India. Nor would you speak Australian Sign if you lived in.. oh.. Idaho, USA. Part of what makes sign language SUPER cool is that it’s got its own local dialects- JUST like any other language! So to honor the people who speak this beautiful, multi-faceted language, we need to learn whatever words that are spoken in our particular area/s. :) So figure out what mermaid/ocean-related word/s you wanna share with our audience, and then learn those signs! It’s as easy as that. ^_^ (If you’re lost or need to figure out what’s already been done so we don’t overlap, check out my Facebook Note about what signs are already taken by other participating mers. ^_^)
Set the stage. Ready your backdrop/background scene. (Whether that’s cleaning up a part of the beach, pool or living room you’ll be filming in or putting up some fabric to shoot in front of, etc..) Gather your props and/or anything else you might need (like plants to give a lush look to the space, an anchor, ship’s wheel or treasure chest to decorate the shot, or a conch shell you might be blowing to demonstrate “conch”).
Make sure your phone/camera is charged & has sufficient memory to film however many takes you’ll require to get your filming done to your satisfaction.
Set your phone/camera on something (a desk, shelf or tripod, anything's fine) or have a friend help you film, so you can get a stable, clean shot of yourself from around the waist or lower ribs up (so you have room to fully illustrate your sign & keep everything in frame).
Be sure to set your focus BEFORE you begin, so your footage isn’t all blurry and you don’t find out until AFTER you’ve filmed! ;D
Get alll dolled up your favorite mer finery! Fabric, silicone, seashells, it’s all good! (Just no nudity, please.)
Hit record! ^_^ -Optional: You have LOTS of options here! You can either introduce yourself, Say what sign you're gonna demonstrate, Tell the audience why you’re taking part in this adventure, Or even SHOW us/act out a bit of whatever sign you're going ti share! :D (Say.. if you're going to sing like a “seagull,” make friends with an “eel,” “sparkle” as you put on pretty adornments, or sit, gazing at transfixed your "mirror." :D) -Or you can simply dive right into demonstrating your sign! :D
Send me your mer name, a bit about what inspired you to join the Project, your video (of course), and whatever link/s you’d like me to promote in the video descriptions by April 24th, & that’s it! ^_^ You’re totes done! :D
Then you can either sit back and relax as you wait for your video/s to air, or start spreading the news about this mermaidy bit of outreach and inspiration you’ve just become a part of! ^_^ I’ll do what I can to message mers privately about when their spots will air/have been published, but everyone can also keep a watch on my Instagram, Twitter & Facebook feeds for news and updates, n’ then help spread the word by Sharing w/their fin-fans, friends n’ family! That way we cast out a wider net, so more humans AND merfolk alike will come see- and thus, spread the mer magic in turn! ^_^
General Guide-Lines:
--Each sign should be demonstrated slowly & clearly, at least once, & then at a more natural speed once or twice more. (Or in a reverse order if you prefer- at a normal pace, then slower once or twice, at your discretion.) What's most important is that you give your viewers a chance to clearly see & study your gestures. :)
--NO Adult Content: This should be a kid-friendly, "family friendly" venture. So please no cursing, nudity or other such adult behavior. We're not exclusively doing this FOR little kiddos, but we wanna make sure if young ones do see it, their parents won't have to wash out their eyes/ears w/Dial soap. ;)
--Keeping Up Appearances: Try to maintain the impression for your audience that you are in fact a water-born merperson, who's come up on land (or has been found in/near the water) to share a few magical moments w/your audience. You don't need a big, fancy set or expensive lights, but filming in/near a body of water (even if it's a pool) is a great idea; as are parks, gardens- even back yards with kiddie pools or places w/fountains! (After all, merfolk can be found -anywhere- there’s water! ^_^) But if you don't have a natural/aqueous setting available (I totally know what that’s like), you can always tack a pretty bit of material up on a wall behind you to film, or even stand/sit in front of a watery-themed shower curtain, big painting, or even a blank wall to make your demo. :)
--As for quality and presentation, you wanna do your best to make as nice a video as possible, 'cause the whole WORLD may see your videos! (Or, at the very least, some of the mer-munity! )
-- Background elements/noise: Of course you don't need to be alone, but yelling/snoring family, barking dogs, meowing cats, radios/TVs in the background, etc. (unless it’s an intentional part of your presentation) can be a bit distracting for your audience, and may take away from your video. So you might wish to choose your shooting days, times n' locations thoughtfully. :)
--Extras: Puppets or guest stars/friends who come say hello n' help you make the video more fun/demonstrate your sign are most welcome! Got a pirate friend/hubby/family who you’ like to invite during the video to say “hi” to your new friends? Please do! Whatever you'd like to do to set the stage and make the most enjoyable, entertaining, beautiful and demonstrative video possible, do that thing! Mers are invited to use lots of imagination, be creative and have FUN with this! ^_^
--Audio & Other Fun Bits: Your video can have sound or be silent, can have (copyright safe) music and/or sound effects if you like! (Slap a foghorn in there if you're doing "ship," "island" "dock" or "lighthouse," or a dolphin chirp if you like! Doing "seagull?" Put a clip of Scuttle "waaawaahwaaaah!"-ing at Ariel from TLM, or a "MINE!!" from Finding Nemo! :D) There are resources all over the web & YT which offer sound effects and music that can be used legally & which have been offered up specifically for video-making purposes. That way your video doesn’t get flagged by YouTube for having copyrighted material. (Because when that happens, they may either make your video silent, or remove it completely; depending on how persnickety the company who owns those sound/s are.) Clips are generally okay, but full copyrighted music is largely not a good idea. If you need info about Creative Commons licensing, click here. And if you want music for your videos, check out this great space YouTube has provided, the Free Music Archive, & Incompetech.com (by Kevin MacLeod) for just a few great places online to find free, Creative Commons music you can legally use in your videos. ^_^
--This is about showing the world how MERMAZING sign language can be, provoking thoughts about how merfolk might communicate underwater, and inspiring people to learn about Deaf culture and language! (Plus.. getting to meet & promote a bunch of rad MERFOLK of course! ^_^)
--These videos can be as simple or as fancy as YOU desire. ^_^ You don't have to have a big production, expensive backgrounds, costumes or pro cameras. ‘Cause at the end of the day (or, the video ;)), what's most important is that you make an entertaining, informative video that -clearly- shows people of all ages -how- to perform whatever signs you're sharing, and who YOU are as a mer. ^_^ Just be clever, artful, warm and creative as YOU can be, & show folks your sign/s (along with a bit of your sparkling mer spirit!) and you’re “coral!” (As they say on SpongeBob. ;)) 'Cause above all else, that's what people are truly coming to see! ^_^
If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me here or on FB. I’m delighted to help facilitate your participation in any way I can! ^_^ ♥♥
All that being said; thank you SOOOO much for participating!!! I know together, we can inspire and educate COUNTLESS hearts n’ minds, and make this world a more wonder-filled place in the process! Love all y’all! ^_^ *happy waves*
♥☼♥
