Midterm - Past Paper 2017
=== Question 0 === (3 Marks)
What is the most important property for a cryptographic hash function to have to make it as resistant as possible to birthday attacks?
.[A] Preimage resistance .[B] Collision resistance .[C] Confidentiality .[D] Symmetry .[E] Second-preimage resistance .[F] Non-determinism
The whole idea behind the “birthday paradox” is that given a room of people it “seems more likely than you think” that any two people will have the same birthday. The key part here is “any” - the idea of being able to find “any” 2 hashes for a function is a collision attack; hence the answer is B.
=== Question 1 === (3 Marks)
You are a developer of opensource fake-news software called "The trumpet shall sound", or "Trumpet" for short. You wish to use a cryptographic algorithm to generate a 64 character "digital fingerprint" of the "Trumpet" binary, which you will display on your web site so that people can check that they have downloaded a legitimate and unaltered copy of "Trumpet".
What is the most important property for this cryptographic fingerprint algorithm to have?
.[A] Preimage resistance .[B] Collision resistance .[C] Confidentiality .[D] Symmetry .[E] Second-preimage resistance .[F] Non-determinism
If someone is trying to make an illegitimate document, they are essentially trying to fake the hash which means it must be either A, B or E. Since they are looking to find another x’ (i.e. fake document) such that h(x) = h(x’) where x is the original document, the answer is clearly second-preimage resistance - E.
=== Question 2 === (3 Marks)
A MAC is designed to provide .[A] Neither Integrity nor Authentication .[B] Authentication but not Integrity .[C] Integrity but not Authentication .[D] Integrity and Authentication .[E] A Very Fashionable Device
A MAC is a hash of a message and a key - the purpose of hashing this is to ensure the data is not modified (i.e. integrity) and that the other individual knows the key (i.e. authentication) so they can verify the MAC code. Therefore the answer is clearly D.
=== Question 3 === (3 Marks)
You have a password file of 1,000 password hashes. Assuming that 50% of the passwords used were weak passwords which can be found in a dictionary of 1,000,000 common passwords, and that hashing a password takes 12 bits of work on average, roughly how many bits of work would it take to discover all these 500 or so weak passwords?
Note: only enter DIGITS in your answer (or else the automarker will mark it wrong.) _____
The easiest way to do this problem is to firstly hash all the dictionary passwords and put them in a table.
Work = 1,000,000 * 2^12 = 2^20 * 2^12 = 2^32
If you have them in a hash map, you can pretty much do an O(1) (constant time) lookup. This is comparatively very small compared to the computation required to compute a hash function, so we can ignore this. (i.e. we don’t need to worry about the 50% being weak at all here really) So the answer is 2^32 bits of work.
=== Question 4 === (3 Marks)
As for Question 3 but now assume that each password is appended to a different 32 bit number (a salt) before the hash was computed, and that the salt number for each password hash is stored, unencrypted, next to the hash in the password file.
Roughly how many bits of work would it take to discover all the 500 or so weak passwords in this case?
Note: only enter DIGITS in your answer (or else the automarker will mark it wrong.)
Now we actually have to consider the assumption that 50% of the given 1000 passwords are weak. This is actually a generalised birthday problem (except 1/2 for weak instead of 1/365 for birthdays) - i.e. given a room of 1,000 people, what is the value of n such that the probability that n people (0 <= n <= 1000) have a birthday on the same day is 0.5? I think solving this is well beyond the scope of this course - so in this question, I will make the assumption there is instead a 50% chance for any ‘given password’ to be weak. This means that on average your expectation would be that you need to check all the passwords to see if they are weak - the actual answer to the generalised birthday problem is not that far off 1,000 so I would argue we may be overestimating the amount of work by 2^0.5.
For each of the passwords we need to check, we will need to calculate the hash with the given salt for each of the common passwords. Now remember, around half of them are weak; this means on average we will only need to hash half the password list for the ones which are weak. The normal passwords we will end up wasting our time on the entire list:
So our answer based on our assumption would be 41.5 bits of work; I would argue that once you take the unintended generalised birthday problem into account it is probably closer to 41 bits of work.
=== Question 5 === (3 Marks)
Below are six lists of expenses submitted by six politicians. Sadly 3 of the politicians are dishonest and submitted made-up fake expense claims, not costs that they really incurred. :(

Had to look up a bit about datasets to find out that this was utilising Benford’s law (on Wikipedia) - an observation regarding the frequency of leading digits in real-world datasets. Basically the idea is they should occur fairly closely to the distribution in the image below:
So what you need to do in the above dataset is count the number of 1′s for each of the politicians as leading digits and the percentage they represent in each column. I did this and got A - 29%, B - 33%, C - 10%, D - 14%, E - 5% and F - 24%. You can clearly see that A, B and F more closely resemble real-world data and are more likely the honest politicians (you can also check this with 2′s as well). Therefore the dishonest politicans are likely C, D and E.
=== Question 6 === (10 Marks)
What is the 5th word in the plaintext for the ciphertext below?

THEPE
My immediate idea was that this was a transposition cipher because it would be kinda cruel otherwise since we aren’t given any word spacing information or punctuation. The first word I saw was “THE” at the start, so I figured it must mean something - I attempted assembling with key length 3 however this didn’t make sense (neither did a length of 4). When I tried a length of 5, I got “THEPH” -> “RASEI” -> “NTHED” -> "ARKAS” (i.e. “THE PHRASE IN THE DARK AS”). This seemed to make sense and checking it a bit further, this seemed to be the correct mapping which is (1,2,3,4,5) -> (5,2,4,3,1) - this means the 5th word is “DARK”.
=== Question 7 === (20 Marks)
Suppose we convert letters and other characters into numbers in the range 1..54 using the following table and then separately encipher each of these numbers using RSA with a public encryption key of 23 and a modulus of 55.
{{{ 1 < 21 L 41 4
2 > 22 M 42 5

16 G 36 SPACE
17 H 37 0
18 I 38 1

20 K 40 3
}}}
For example the plaintext ":)" would be converted into 5,48, and then each of these numbers would be individually encrypted using RSA to produce the cipertext 15,42.
The remainder of this question has been encrypted using RSA with an encryption key of 23 and a modulus of 55.

}}}
What is the answer codeword?
If you read a little about RSA you would know that you pick 2 primes (p and q) at the beginning of the algorithm which multiply together to give you your modulus. Since we have a modulus of 55, then p = 5 and q = 11. This means Euler’s totient = (5 - 1)(11 - 1) = 40. For the public key it is clear that 23 has been chosen as it doesn’t share any factors with 40. To determine the decryption key we can solve d * e (mod ϕ) = 1. We will do this via Extended Euclidean algorithm:
Therefore our private key is (d = 7, n = 40). We can use this to decrypt the answer if we want rather quickly; to save time you could probably just calculate the stuff near the end - for example once you calculate 53 ^ 7 (mod 55) you unlock quite a few bits of the text. An easy way to do this is to realise that 53 (mod 55) = -2 (mod 55) and -2 (mod 55) = -128 (mod 55) = 37. Anyway I got lazy and just dumped it all in a script:
So the codeword is ‘00000000′.

=== Question 0 === (3 Marks)
I’m honestly not too sure about this one. I’ll have to ask Kris.
=== Question 1 === (3 Marks)
You are a developer of opensource fake-news software called “The trumpet shall sound”, or “Trumpet” for short. You wish to use a cryptographic algorithm to generate a 64 character “digital fingerprint” of the “Trumpet” binary, which you will display on your web site so that people can check that they have downloaded a legitimate and unaltered copy of “Trumpet”.
What is the most important property for this cryptographic fingerprint algorithm to have?
.[A] Preimage resistance .[B] Collision resistance .[C] Confidentiality .[D] Symmetry .[E] Second-preimage resistance .[F] Non-determinism
In this case, we don’t want someone to be able to find a second software which maps to the same fingerprint as ours after using the algorithm.
=== Question 2 === (3 Marks)
A MAC is designed to provide .[A] Neither Integrity nor Authentication .[B] Authentication but not Integrity .[C] Integrity but not Authentication .[D] Integrity and Authentication .[E] A Very Fashionable Device
A MAC serves two purposes:
The first is to provide integrity by ensuring that a message sent hasn’t been tampered with (if the message has been tampered with, the MAC value sent won’t be the same one calculated by the receiver).
The second is to provide authentication, so that we know the message was sent by who we think it was (this is due to the shared secret that they salted the message with).
=== Question 3 === (3 Marks)
Hashing a password takes 12 bits of work on average.
To hash 1 million passwords, it would take:
2^12 x 2^20 = 2^32 bits of work.
To discover all 500 weak passwords, we then simply have to compare all 500 with the hashed value we attained. Hence the answer is 2^32.
=== Question 4 === (3 Marks)
Now we must essentially run the previous computation once for every single password in our file, with the added salt. The salt essentially is changing what we must hash for each password.
For example:
Say one of the passwords hashes I had on file was fdjksh32 (password = apple123). Say another password hash was jcsn342 (banana1212). If both of these were unsalted, I can simply go to a dictionary and hash each common password once (assuming that both apple123 and banana1212 are common). I can then check if I find a match in my file and from the output of the hashed dictionary.
Now say both passwords are salted using different words (maybe red and yellow). Now instead of hashing the dictionary only once, I’ll have to hash the entire dictionary with the word red as a prefix to the passwords (e.g. h(redpassword) and h(redadmin)) just to see if apple123 is a common password. Similarly, I’ll now have to hash every password in the dictionary with the word yellow as a prefix. I will have to do this as many times as there are unique salts.
Hence now the work I must do is 2^32 * 1000 = 2^32 * 2^10 = 2^42 bits of work.

I had to ask my COMP1521 tutor Hayden for help on this question. He referred me to Benford’s law. Benford’s law basically states that naturally occurring datasets tend to follow a diminishing returns distribution such as the image provided below:
We would expect to be more costs which have a prefix starting in 1 and fewer which start in 9. A potentially made up set of data would have a more uniform distribution across the frequencies of the numbers. From this I calculated the number of entries that began with the number 1. The results are as follows:
A - 29%, B - 33%, C - 10%, D - 14%, E - 5% and F - 24%
As such, it is likely that C, D and E are the dishonest ones.
=== Question 6 === (10 Marks)

{{{ HHPET IAESR DTEHN SRAKA UASMI UEOYR CNWOK FNERA TRONE TNYLO

I quickly ran the code through a letter frequency calculator and the following output was returned:
This follows very characteristic English profiles and as such this is likely a transposition cipher. I tried stacking the letters as previous questions required to no avail. I then started to research other transposition ciphers. A common one was essentially swapping the location of the letters in chunk sized groups of letters. Looking at this code, the first thought I had was potentially the first word is ‘THE’. Doing this meant that (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) -> (5, 1/2, 4, ....). I was essentially left with either ‘THEPH’ or ‘THEHP’. Thanks to English structure I quickly ruled out the latter and was left with one of two possible mappings:
(1, 2, 3, 4, 5) -> (5, 2, 4, 3, 1) or (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) -> (5, 1, 4, 3, 2)
If we follow the pattern, the next lot of 5 letters would by the first mapping become ‘RASEI’ vs the second mapping would give us ‘RISEA’. Combining with the first 5 letters we get either ‘THEPHRASEI’ or ‘THEPHRISEA’. As such we deemed the mapping to be the former.
We continue applying our cipher and we get:
'THEPHRASEINTHEDARKAS...’
and from that we can extrapolate that the fifth word is DARK.
=== Question 7 === (20 Marks)
Suppose we convert letters and other characters into numbers in the range 1..54 using the following table and then separately encipher each of these numbers using RSA with a public encryption key of 23 and a modulus of 55.
{{{ 1 < 21 L 41 4
2 > 22 M 42 5
3 ? 23 N 43 6

11 B 31 V 51 ,
12 C 32 W 52 -
13 D 33 X 53 .

15 F 35 Z
16 G 36 SPACE
17 H 37 0
18 I 38 1
19 J 39 2
20 K 40 3
}}}
For example the plaintext ”:)“ would be converted into 5,48, and then each of these numbers would be individually encrypted using RSA to produce the cipertext 15,42.
The remainder of this question has been encrypted using RSA with an encryption key of 23 and a modulus of 55.
{{{ 24,18,49,16,48,49,33,10, 2,12,
52,49,48,16,19,20,16,24,18, 2,

16,18,10, 7,16,11,49,49,12,16,
49,12,23,48,34, 5,24,49,52,16,
50, 7, 2,12,26,16,48, 7,10,16,
43, 2,24,18,16,10,12,16,49,12,
23,48,34, 5,24, 2,19,12,16,25,

16, 2, 7,16,53,53,53,53,53,53,
53,53.
}}}
What is the answer codeword?
Once again Blankaex was kind enough to help me here. RSA picks its modulus by multiplying two primes together. Two prime factors of 55 are p = 5 and q = 11. From this we are able to calculate Euler’s totient:
(5-1)*(11-1) = 40
Now we know that calculation of the decryption key, d, is based on the fact that:
d * 23 (mod 40) = 1.
Now the only thing that 3 multiplies with that will produce a number ending in 1 is any number ending in 7. So we try d = 7:
7 * 23 = 161 mod 40 = 1.
Hence the decryption key is 7.
I made code to do the rest for me:

Kagerou Project Analysis
Kagerou Project Comparisons -> “Common” places, featuring Hibiya (& Hiyori) (& certain others) [ Routes: Music (+etc.) -> Manga -> Novels ->? MCA -> ? / any etc., MX4D?] “play” (Kano) [2013] vs “park” (Momo) [2018] (featuring: Hibiya & Hiyori; notably Hibiya’s POVs / involvement)
Momo: About the phone strap you bought... you're gonna give it to Hiyori-chan, right? Hibiya: !!!!?? Hibiya: W-why would you think that ?? Momo: Ohoho so I was right... Hiyori: (blank staring from nearby, seemingly not hearing) (“?”) Momo: Well, for your information, there's a nice park around the corner there... Momo: Wouldn't the atmosphere be quite romantic if you went there during this time? Hibiya: /choking noise + furious blushing [the scene continues on....] [ to KageDaze ..... ] ^ Manga Route 2 ( source: x ) - Hibiya & Hiyori meet Shintaro & Momo very early on. [Manga Route: officially / timelines-wise, takes place before Novels Route & maybe [unknown/likely] MCA] [*note: Hibiya & Hiyori: encounters the store. it’s not closed because the Mall Occupation incident was previously solved*. (*by a certain: K o n o h a [hmm] [hmmmm]) Hibiya: despite this, does not get a phone (yet). instead, he buys a phone strap ... initially meant for “Hiyori”. ] [ Hiyori: also gets Momo’s autograph. ] (previously; before Manga Route 2) Manga Route 1: - Reset. Mall is closed. - Hibiya & Hiyori do not encounter ? a specific mention of the park. [unknown] - Hibiya: does not get a phone. ... ? - Hibiya & Hiyori: do not encounter / get to know the Mekakushi Dan*. [*because ... Saeru. i.e. there’s literally timelines they may not even meet] [or they may not meet the same. this includes how they meet the entire Dan.] (no specific mentions of phone, but they were trying to go to the store.) * “Today is such a nice day, so it’d be nice to play outside for a while~. What a waste!”
The guy crossed his arms behind his head and pouted.
“Ahaha… that’s right too. It’d be kinda nice to play outside for a while”
Hiyori smiled softly.
“Well, take care then! I’m going now. Bye-bye~”
The guy smiled at us again, turned around and quickly walked away.
^ “The Children Reason”, Kagerou Days ch III / Novel 3 ( source: x ) - Hibiya & Hiyori meet Kano in the graveyard. [the novel continues on...] [ to KageDaze ..... ] [*note: Mall Occupation incident leads to Mall closure.] [ Hibiya: does not get the phone / go to store. .... Yet. ] [ also see: Novel 5, “The Deceiving” + a certain someone’s involvement. ] [ Hibiya: attempts to confess to Hiyori. Stumbles over words / etc. ] [ Hiyori: sees Konoha. Konoha: overheard. (hmmmm) ] [ Hiyori: misunderstands / gets angry, runs off, encounters the “accident”. ] [ Hibiya: eventually, appears to still wake up in the Daze] * MCA Route: Hibiya: encounters Momo early on, as early as Episode 02, Kisaragi Attention. Hibiya: with Momo, after getting to know her a bit, runs away from Momo’s fans. Hibiya & Momo: then separated. Momo recruited to Dan by Kido. Hibiya: later sees Momo on the tv, recognizes her. Hiyori: chides Hibiya about Hibiya not getting her autograph. “I’ll [tell Hiyori] [my feelings] tomorrow.” - Hibiya
no one: tells him about “the park”. instead:
- MCA Route [ aka: the Route “closest to the latter” ] [ Hibiya: does not get the phone. ] [ MCA ending: still happens. ] [ MCA: Reset ? ?? ] [likely] * - MX4D mini-Timeline: - Hibiya: winds up in temporary possession of Shintaro’s phone [ Shintaro’s phone: has Ene. ] - Hibiya: is involved with Hiyori during the Mall Occupation incident. - Dan: the original 9 w/Hibiya, Hiyori, Konoha, Ene. seemingly no Ayano. - Tateyamas: unknown if they even exist here (no Kenjirou seen, no Ayaka...) - Shintaro: has Eyes power (at start). - Mall: is saved from said incident (by everyone available). [still no Ayano.] - Mall: has bomb. - bomb: [ BOOM ] * [ Mekakucity Reload album (Music Route ? ??) part 2: yet to happen. ] [ Mekakucity Reload anime: yet to happen. ] Conclusions?: - if Hibiya gets a phone: ????? - if Hibiya gets a phone (that has Ene): ?????? - if Ene 1) tells him about “playing” at “the park” 2) invites one of the original Hibiyas to join the Mekakushi Dan: ??????? 3) or, both Hibiya & Hiyori: ???????????????????????? * if Saeru gets a hold of [Shintaro or Momo’s phones]: [ /insert Ene screaming in the distance ] (see: Outer Science*, Manga Route 1) [*note: in the original Outer Science pv / Music Route, Ene is deleted by Shintaro during Route XX. in Manga Route 1, Saeru instead destroys Shintaro’s phone.] (Summertime Reload spoilers under the ‘read more’!):
- Novel 8 (Summertime Reload): - Hibiya: gets a phone. - it’s a particular person’s phone. (*not Shintaro’s) - end of Summertime Reload: happens. [ another very notable part: also happens. ] [ that: maybe occurs before MCA Route (?) if MCA happens later ] [ that: depends on if MCA even happens that much later ] * also previously in From the Darkness, Novel 7: [ Hibiya: was about to get Momo’s autograph. ] Hibiya asked Momo to sign for Hiyori after all these commotions ended. Momo had mixed feelings because she didn’t think Hiyori’d be satisfied with her sign *since she’d not be able to return to being an idol then* and she felt a trickle of jealousy [in her heart]. Not hearing Momo’s answer, Hibiya then said: “So you*…… We will definitely have to meet again! Promise me!” with a face like he was about to cry. “…… OK I see. I promise you.” - replied Momo. (* emphasis mine.) (* linked: image from said scene.) (ALSO previously [same scene]): hibiya: ‘if you’re worried about something, then just say it out loud. am I really that unreliable to you?’ momo: ‘……eh?’ * and, also in Summertime Reload: “However, no matter what kind of karma she had to bear later, she would simply think “It’s OK as well.” In order to cut open a path to our future, at this moment, she just decided without hesitation like that. Now come to think of it, she had always been like that since our first meeting. She was worried about a complete stranger like me as if it was her own problem, and without showing any sight of doubt, told me such thing as “I’ll definitely help you!” She is so soft-hearted, stupid, reckless, unreliable… but more than anyone else, she’s such a kind person. Since Momo’s like that, I was able to fight for myself like this too. The one who taught me about “friends**” - it was (no other than*) her.” * - added in by the translator for possible emphasis, still relevant. (*emphasis [italics] mine]) [**linked: Lost Day Hour mini-manga] ^ Hibiya’s POV additional theory: here

Kagerou Project Analysis: early Hibiya+Hiyori ; Wannyanpuu’s Kagerou Days / Daze Alt Deaths
[ Wannyanpuu’s early Hibiya & Hiyori: Possible Alternate Deaths ] [ analysis / theories continued from here ! ]
Alternate deaths found from Wannyanpuu’s older fanmade [pre-main series] Kagerou Daze pv ..... ...... ..... (Including some even I never noticed until rewatching this music video for the nth time ... in the year 2k18) (possibly a few were later re-used in canon for other characters?) (possibly)
(also including more bonus crying Kagerou ! Hibiyas)
(warning: gore, blood, some are quite graphic implications gore-wise) (and also deaths wise ;;) (more warnings under the cut) (do not look if you are sensitive!) (basically: [almost] as many extreme deaths as you can think of ;;) (these happening to Hiyori especially but also implied Hibiya) (because timeloops.) (and Hibiya switching the timelines)
Death #1 - Normal Car, not even TRUCK Death #2 - Scissors ..... (was this re-used later for Shintaro?) Death #3 - I can’t tell exactly what this is but blood dripping off edges ...... [gore tw] Death #4 - Matches ..... (fire?!?) (possibly re-used for young Kido but ..... ) Death #5 - crushed by something heavy ? ..... [serious gore tw] Death #6 - rope [suicide tw] Death #7 - bottle [suicide tw] Death #8 - multiple extreme gunshots [HEAVY GORE TW] Death #9 - blood dripping down Hiyori’s side of face, her eyes still open / fuctioning ? [heavy gore tw] (she was struck by something in between?) Death #10 - buried ? [HEAVY GORE TW] [ or poles ] Death #11 - marks / wounds on neck ;; [heavy gore tw] (ok though this also appears during a truck scene so it may be the truck marks) (if you pause during an earlier scene, her first death - yeah) Death #12? - uh .... .... ... (HIBIYA NO) [POSSIBLE UNINTENDED VIOLENCE TW] [ ^ HEAVY GORE TW TOO ] (could also be remnants from truck but ..... ) (blood on his hands.) (Hibiya looking terrified too) Death #13? / clock - uh oh [ INSERT KAGEROU TRANSFORMATION INCOMING ? 3, 2, 1 ..... ] in between: the scene in full showing most of these and possibly other ( the others were still vague though so possibly it was more truck / etc. ) ( page jump / skip to the very end if you only want to see the last Hibiya(s) ;; ) ( and more crying Kagerou Hibiyas )
( ^ normal [black] car )
( ^ scissors ..... )
( ^ dripping blood )
( ^ matches [fire] ;; ;; ) ( HIYORI+HIBIYA N O DON’T YOU DARE )
[ the following deaths get PRETTY GOREY AND DARK SO ] [ PLEASE TAKE CAUTION ] [ tw for some: suicide (reminder though they’re trying to save each other) ] [ (from the loops yeah) (it appears to get really drastic .....) ]

.
.
.
.
.
( ^ crushed ? ..... ) ( Hiyo ;; ) [ poles are still possible or truck but ]
( ^ Wannyanpuu THIS WAS NOT OK ) ( hopefully we NEVER get this in canon but uh yeah implications still there ) ( but yeah Shintaro’s & Ayano’s were ... bad enough ;; ;; )
( ^ ;; ;; ;; ;; ;; ) ( STOP. )
( ^ CHRIST ) (HIBIYA SAW THIS) (HIBIYA SAW ALL OF THESE) ( reused for Saeru ? ?? )
( ^ blood dripping down Hiyori’s face / eye ;; )
( ^ more like this .... )
( ^ more truck, or ..... )
.
.
.
.
.
( ^ WANNYANPUU NO )
( possibly what leads to the .... )
.
.
.
.
.
( ^ Kagerou Daze deaths in full ) ( ^ note: Kagerou is seen, but still seems to be mostly just standing there.) ( “ he was just standing there, as if mocking me ” - novels 1 Hibiya ) ( so it seems these deaths can happen without Kagerou actually doing things? ) ( including the canon Heat Haze ? )

Kagepro theories / random analysis / questions of sorts?
so, funny things seem to happen when you directly compare [play at the same time against each other] the music videos for - Otsukimi Recital [of all songs] and - Outer Science ... while trying to find more Outer Science parallels ..... ... and then compare those findings to other things too ..... [bonus: some novel 8 spoiler bits from recent translations] [ even if this ends up being totally false maybe consider it like a fic that wrote itself? (hhhha) ] [ but seriously please try comparing the two videos by playing them at the exact same time against each other, some parts time up timing wise surprisingly well! ] [ also it’s very amusing ] [ also includes some “Additional Memory” arc from Manga Route analysis ]
ok so if you weren’t here for Outer Science’s release in the past, this happened at one point: [spurring off a series where everyone tried to catch more parallels]:
..... (and so on) ..... uhhhhh “[this] is the real thing!” - “Kagerou” in Wannyanpuu’s KageDaze pv [TOO] (also in original KageDaze’s song lyrics still) (UHHHHHHH) naturally, I recently was reminded of it [in the year 2k18 at that] and thought, “hey, did anyone ever directly compare Otsukimi Recital too? i didn’t have any caps from it in my archives just thematic parallels--” and well um [disclaimer: most of this is just for fun ok] [ but also to try and connect together thematic parallels if indirectly ] [ Outer Science re-translation from Kagepro wiki ] [ CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR ALL MAJOR ROUTES ] [ skip to the end for more important Routes questions! ]
[^ opening: Momo pan-up, Saeru pan-up] [ ^ Momo’s eyes flashing red as she points to the viewer, Outer Science intro ]
[^ oh hey (the one on right flashes by very fast too)]
[^ “...Daze you too”] [”hey, you (prayed too, right?)” -Saeru]
[^ also just before Momo’s “nee!” face at the exact moment Saeru says “nee”] (that’s more of a fun timing thing though)
[^”young master”] [similar mouth placements...] [”it’s pointless” -Hibiya, and also Kagerou in old fanmade [but later Kagepro artist though] Wannyanpuu versions] / [”it’s (an unpleasant) story” -”Azami”]
[^ compared better to young Seto in Shounen Brave up there but]
(a bit earlier) [^the wires?] [there are a lot of TVs in certain Music Route songs ....] [^”(just saying supportive things) wasn’t going to cut it” as Konoha flashes by]
[^ hmmm] .....
[^ ok but what if Momo DID know more than she’s letting on] [or later on, too]
[^ all of them flash by in these and related parts but]
[^ ”...go together”]
[^ HIBIYA NO]
[^”(Legends, life, and even people’s fate)”] [^ oh hi cat] [still a KageDaze reference]
[^ disclaimer: I am not writing these ok. it does it itself] [”...(And inadvertently falling in love, too)...” - right side]
[^ THIS ENTIRE SECTION LINES UP TIMING WISE PRETTY CLOSELY] [ PARALLELS WITHIN PARALLELS (ON THE LEFT SIDE TOO) ] [ Hibiya’s FACE there ] [”(Such stupid things.)” -Saeru] [”i don’t even know what’s going on...” -Hibiya] [“(Ah, how difficult, what a challenge, I can’t stand it)” -Saeru]
[”*(Embedding in those eyes)”] [ ... the soda hits Hibiya in the eyes literally right then ] (maybe more fun but wow timing)
[”the power to combine the eyes together...”] [...?] (oh hi Mary) ( they DO need Focusing Eyes too ..... )
[^ Momo WATCH OUT]
[^ I mean literally] [ PARALLELS WITHIN PARALLELS WITHIN ] [’sobbing ”I don’t want this!”’] [”(You knew it, right? That's fate)” -Saeru]
[^ he obviously wouldn’t want this to happen to Konoha either ok] [ much less the rest ] [^ in Otsukimi Recital he’s also having Hiyori flashbacks here] [”(first tragedy)”]
[”I wanted us to be together” -Hibiya] [ ... uh oh]
[^ Momo: must help Hibiya get FOCUSING EYES] [^“Outer Science”] (RIGHT HERE) [ in between during Otsukimi Recital interlude: Outer Science deaths, including Saeru pushing Hibiya in front of truck, like so ]
[ bonus: the street light in between flashing as Seto particularly dies too ] [ maybe related .... ]
[”(No matter how many times you deny it This foolish life you're living)” -Saeru] (.... ok seriously, this comparing aside, Saeru’s watching them?) (is that also why there’s so many TVs that pop up in Music Route videos?) (certain novel 8 spoilers too seem to indicate similar things) (also especially in some particular songs ... [see below for more on that])
[”(No matter how many times you just cry)” -Saeru]
[^ RIGHT AS HER EYES FLASH RED] [ the right side flashes by very fast reds too ] (tw epilepsy if you compare um) [^ same timing though]
["( You asked for too much and now serve to sin)” -Saeru] (ok but if it was said to Mary AND Hibiya ..... it’d fit)
[^ ending smirks/grins] [^ video ending on Otsukimi side with Momo grabbing Hibiya to pull him along]
[ ..... ok all that for fun stuff aside ] [but then I was reading Hibiya bits from novel 8 and TAKANE / ENE NO] [ DON’T GIVE HIM IDEAS TAKANE / ENE NO ]
.... ........ ........... ..... .. .
it was “MOMO’S PHONE”
- OK BUT WHY DOESN’T HE HAVE THE PHONE IN MOST MAIN TIMELINES - LITERALLY HE WAS ALMOST ALWAYS TRYING TO BUY A PHONE - LITERALLY THE FREAKING PHONE
[”i’ll do it!” -Hibiya]
[”the next next next”] [”(Let’s ridicule it!)” -Saeru]
^ “Kagerou” Hibiya, from the old Wannyanpuu fan pv
[”continue?”] [“yes”]
[ ... and after Saeru!Hibiya kills Momo ..... ]
BONUS:
[ is ... is Saeru holding Momo in Outer Science too ..... ? ]
(or if it’s not Momo, Shintaro maybe? either way) (Momo still dies by Saeru!Hibiya in Manga Route)
(BONUS THE NTH: MY TAGS FROM WAY BACK THEN EVEN:) “#... #Momo...?”
more of a fun bonus (i’m sorry) (don’t take this one seriously)
(”WELCOME TO MY WOMB” [mis?]translation)
THE POINT OF ALL OF THIS REGARDLESS OF PARALLELS OR LACK OF BEING:
WILL HIBIYA STILL CHANGE THE TIMELINES / GO PSUEDO-“DARK” (EVEN IF HE’S NOT THE “HEAT HAZE” SPECIFICALLY BUT SIMILAR) [ or like unintentionally corrupted Hibiya in a way ]
WILL HIBIYA WAKE UP NEXT ROUTE HOLDING [MOMO’S?] THE FREAKING PHONE [ IN THE PAST WE ALL THOUGHT IT’D BE HIS OWN PHONE BUT ]
- WHAT WILL HE REMEMBER (.... OR NOT) [ because even if he WAS he might not remember everything / not intentional ] - WHO DIES FIRST (HIYORI OR HIBIYA) - WHO GETS FOCUSING EYES (HIYORI OR HIBIYA) - DOES KONOHA TRY TO SAVE HIYORI OR HIBIYA FIRST OR BOTH - WHAT WILL MANGA ROUTE NEW FORM SAERU DO IN BETWEEN - (NOW THAT HE LACKS ‘KUROHA’S FORM ?) - IS THE LOST TIME MEMORY SCENE WHERE SHINTARO SAVES KUROHA AND OR KONOHA / HARUKA FROM BEING KILLED STILL IMPORTANT TOO (I’M BETTING IT IS) - ARE THERE ANY POTENTIAL ROUTES AT ALL WHERE MEKAKUSHI TRIO DON’T KNOW EACH OTHER PRIOR TO AYANO’S THEORY OF HAPPINESS [YES] (SEE: The Deceiving [novel 5], young Kano meeting young Ayano at the playground BEFORE he dies and enters the Daze / by being stabbed when still young) (SEE: Shounen Brave possibly ? ??, the period of time in between Seto drowning before he eventually revives and winds up at the orphanage (later on); later [or possibly BEFORE that in some spinoff Route[s]?] meeting Mary) (this goes for all three members of the Trio by the way, ‘that time they died before they all met Ayano / Tateyamas’ because yes this is what messes up Mekakushi Trio dynamics and can change with every route) - IS NEW ALBUM A NEW ROUTE OR IS IT PART OF CURRENT MUSIC ROUTE CONTINUED [FORMER SEEMS LIKELY] - IS MEKAKUCITY RELOAD (WHEN IT HAPPENS TOO) A NEW ROUTE OR IS IT PART OF ANIME ROUTE CONTINUED [THE FORMER SEEMS LIKELY] - WILL ANYTHING ELSE BE ANNOUNCED COME AUGUST 15TH [LIKELY] - WAS MOMO [AND/OR KONOHA AND REST] A CATALYST EITHER WAY (IF SOMETHING LIKE THIS STILL HAPPENS) - IS MANGA ROUTE / NEW FORM SAERU DOING THINGS ON HIS OWN IN GENERAL [MAYBE?] - WHO ELSE IS IN ON THIS IF IT’S EVEN AT ALL A POSSIBILITY STILL (BECAUSE I’M HIGHLY SUSPECTING - MARY [RESETS .... ] - SETO [MAYBE] [IF HELPING MARY] [looks at novels volume 8 summaries] - HIYORI [OBVIOUSLY] - A Y A N O)
LITERALLY AYANO LITERALLY TALKS TO HIBIYA IN THE DAZE [IN NOVELS, MANGA KIND OF?, AND MCA TOO]
AYANO YOU COULD HAVE TOLD HIM ABOUT THE FREAKING PHONE !!!
BONUS THE NTH (MORE...): - Otsukimi Recital is like an “Extra Edition” type of song - Shounen Brave is/was “Episode ?” - other episode ?s: Shinigami Record, Dead and Seek [Kenjirou, also Saeru], Ene’s Cyber Journey [Route XX Ene?] - other extra edition type songs: Toumei Answer [Ayano & Shintaro], Yuukei Yesterday [Haruka & Takane], Yobanashi Deceive [Kano]* is technically listed but isn’t included in the main/first Music Route, neither was Toumei Answer?, Ayano’s Theory of Happiness*, Otsukimi Recital* ..... .... because maybe they are “interfering with the Routes” type songs ?
BONUSES THE NTH (AGAIN): - we’re confirmed to [eventually] be getting an “Additional Memory” song [note that’s the title for the Saeru!Hibiya involved mini-arc in Manga Route] [even if it doesn’t center completely on Hibiya, well....]
a bit from ‘Additional Memory’ (I)? summary:
Ayano asked when the snake entered Hibiya’s body, to which he answered from the very start, long before he killed “Concealing Eyes” and met Ayano. He continued that this body was a “miss”. It was good that the boy who didn’t have any wish began to have a desire to “save the girl”, but it was a little bit immature. Regardless that the snake was a being that eats up “desire”, that wish causes him a sour stomach. “[LONG BEFORE HIBIYA (&SAERU)] [MET AYANO]”
^ “THE BOY WHO DIDN’T HAVE ANY WISH”
^ “A DESIRE” TO “SAVE THE GIRL”
^ ok but why the HECK would it be “IMMATURE” if Hibiya ALWAYS WANTED TO SAVE HIYORI FROM THE START and WHAT DOES SAERU MEAN “DIDN’T HAVE ANY WISH”
..... unless .....
... if SAVING HIYORI alone isn’t a strong enough wish ......
... and in the beginning of some routes SAVE HIYORI alone wasn’t his wish .....
what if it eventually [slowly] becomes [over time] “SAVE MOMO [TOO]”, “SAVE KONOHA [TOO]”, “SAVE EVERYONE [TOO]”
(some Saeru somewhere, probably: “oh, NOW his wish is strong enough”) (mangaverse New Form Saeru: [takes advantage of all of this])
a bit from ‘Additional Memory II’ summary:
Ayano questioned the snake: “You can’t do anything without using Hibiya-kun’s body right?.” Then suddenly, Hibiya regained his self consciousness, asking if Hiyori was alright!? He seemed very happy to see Hiyori. He was very worried that he could never meet her again… Then he was shocked to see the situation and tried to break out of Konoha’s hold. The snake used that chance to break out of the window, of course without forgetting to smirk at the kids: “Didn’t say I no one can stop this anymore?."
..... [later]
Hiyori finally reached their place, just to see Hibiya cry and say "I’m sorry” right before her eyes. http://fuyuyuu.tumblr.com/post/167573767600/
..... i’m done (sorry)
