Pit Babe Thoughts - What a Banger of a show!

So having just realised I watched the entire CUT VERSION of this show and now planning to rewatch the entire thing from scratch because it's so good I want my extra minutes DANG IT.

I thought I'd put some thoughts down first because DAMN this show may not have been perfectly polished but it was amazing for a multitude of reasons.

Playing fast and loose with pairings and ships.

Now obviously our main 2 ships were our main 2 ships, we haven't entered a parallel universe, but the amount of tension they threw in anytime ANY two sides were together was delicious. It's fun to not know who will end up with who, the show teased and toyed with possible pairings and I LOVED IT.

(Also main ships may have been main but I was half wondering if we WOULD end up with Way/Babe somewhere in the middle there!)

2. Having fun with personalities and sex dynamics.

Now I have recently run across the understanding that a lot of BL is based of one specific pairing type from a much broader range of couple dynamics present in Yaoi and Shounen-ai (super darling X milquetoast) stories. And while this doesn't really feel like we're distant from that pairing type. The show doesn't strictly fit this and certainly plays with the audience perception by having Babe as the Uke.

But also introducing lesser known elements of Omegaverse like Enigma's was extra cool.

4. New settings!

Racing BLs aren't exactly the norm.

5. More playing with lanuguage dynamics

Not brand-new but we got a lot of play around language and age, Papa Mama, Loong and Nu, The way Alan switched around his "I" Pronoun so much. BL not leaning so heavily on Pom and Phi or Gu and Mung or even Khun and Pom is fun to see!

6. A lot of casual physical affection

Now this is definitely becoming more common but I still want to highlight how physically affectionate Babe and Charlie (In particular) got to be with each other the whole time

Overall the series was compelling, intense, and well executed. The relationships (Friendships and romantic) were utterly compelling. I love the way so much teasing was done with all the side peeps. I love how it had real stakes, emotions and consequences. I loved how much it played out the background and relationships of the characters, the way that all of Tony's children felt something for him, were compelled to love and hate and feel responsible. I loved how some people got forgiveness and others didn't and how people's very real pain, anger and betrayal got explored so deeply.

The show was not flawless or perfectly executed by any means.

But it was a compelling and interesting plot with utterly compelling relationships played all the way out without rushing or skipping.

And I loved it

I am off to watch the Uncut Version, can't wait.

Characters of NATLA thoughts

Because we're not at all sick to death of picking this over yet. ROFL Thoughts on Aang as presented in the live-action. (And not commentary on acting chops, but on the show's story choices.)

I may share thoughts about others eventually, but I'm starting with Aang because the whole dang show is named for him and so he IS the main character. Taking away his outward tendency to be "fun" was, I think, a disservice. Part of the charm of OG Aang, part of what made him So Very Perfect for the current war-torn world was that he had literally never lived with the stresses of war. He had to work, he had to train, he even had to deal with the fallout of being told he was the avatar and having his peers look at him differently because of it. But he was still full of joy, and mischief, and curiosity. He knew how to live in a world at peace. 100 years later and no one knows how to do that - he is the perfect one to show them how because for him, it was just yesterday. So taking that away was the wrong tactic, I think. I mean, my guy didn't even get to show off his marble trick. They also decided to have him just happen to be away from the temple, on a clear-my-head ride on Appa, when the attack happened. He didn't run away in this one. I actually didn't hate this choice. What I did dislike was that he KNEW he didn't "run away", but never bothered to reassure the people that he didn't choose to leave them when he was accused of doing so. It makes it harder to see why he'd feel such guilt, basically, if he wasn't running. And I mean, in the original, he wasn't actually running because he was told he was the Avatar. He had still been around the temple after learning that. He was running from the news he overheard that the monks were going to separate him from Gyatso - the one person who still treated him like AANG first and foremost rather than the Avatar. It's a difference. But it's one I could see being easily muddled in a 12 yr olds head, and he did still choose to run, so in the original his guilt makes sense. I also prefer the original's way of having his new friends (Katara - who is the next person to see him as Aang first and foremost) help him through it, pointing out that he likely couldn't have done anything then and that he's here NOW when the world needs him. I mean, it was cool to get to see Gyatso again, but.. enh. Wasn't needed, didn't make as much story sense, and took away a moment that cemented some of the solid bonds between the core Gaang.

And my biggest I'll-die-mad change of all.. him deciding to NOT back Katara up when they got to the North. I mean, it bugged me since the start that they didn't have them excited to learn waterbending together. I figured they'd get there but it never happened. It's a very Aang-focused choice, when one of the things that made him awesome was thinking of others most of the time. And then for the whole journey North, they didn't show a lot of bond-forming between the core trio along the journey, skipping over most of it. We're told that they're friends, but it's much harder to be invested in it when we don't get to see it really. All the small scenes that were cut were actually important for building those bonds. And then when we do get a deep one-on-one moment, Katara comes to vent to Aang - supposedly her close friend - that Pakku says she shouldn't learn to fight. And Aang - who in the original was young, was at times unsure of himself and scared, but who always ALWAYS had unwavering belief in his friends being capable and pride in specifically Katara's talents - Aang in this version tells her Pakku's in the right. That basically if she works towards her dreams, she's in the way of him doing his job as Avatar. And this change is the one I will never forgive them for. Friendship was one thing that was so central to the spirit of the original, and they did it dirty.

I didn't realise badly written my last message (On Psykos) was, sorry for that. Murata is cool and chill so I can't imagine what he thinks, but knowing how much time and effort he puts into his art, redrawing it to get it just right and then another publisher destroys all that detail, to me thats so disrespectful and insulting while also an inaccurate representation of Murata's work and skill. I get annoyed with Viz for destroying the authors words because they cut corners and want to (pt1)

- americanise the comics (I appreciate Tokyopop (rip) for keeping the Japanese honor-fics in and just educate the readers on Japanese nuiances) and in OPM dumb down and censor it. To me it reads really disrespectfully and makes poor translations because at times they barely retain the tone or meaning (admittedly that is difficult but possible). It's worse that they're purposefully doing it. Murata and ONE still get their coin but it's a disservice all round.

If I can still understand your messages then any grammar/formatting issues aren’t a problem. <3) I think there’s some solace in how Murata probably doesn’t even -know- what viz is doing to his work behind his back overseas (ONE probably has no idea either, aside from licensing/publishing/distribution rights. So together they can continue to work unaware and unbothered by whatever hangups viz gets themselves trapped in~) But IF Murata saw what they were doing to his art then...whew that’d be a different story. Remember how Miyazaki threatened Dis/ney by mailing a katana saying “no cuts” to his movies, since that was very common for american companies to do back then. We know just how seriously and painstakingly Murata the no-chill perfectionist works, and how he gets worked up when ONE’s work is disrespected. :’D Still, Murata’s also a nice guy so who knows if he’s already aware of what viz is doing (and let it slide) or not.

It also looks like this is some...unfortunate common practice among viz’s track record too, if they’ve similarly done this to many other series in the past before. (Oh dang, and I remember Tokyopop back in the day.) The other option to keep those honorific details (specific to revealing the level of respect/closeness chars have for one another, which can differ wildly depending on how they address the protag for ex like in Mob) and nuances while offering educational translation notes in the index is pretty valuable. Viz couldn’t get around it in bn/ha; they had to keep Katsuki’s nickname intact for it to make sense. Meanwhile for opm viz will have like 1 note in the back of the vols about what’s written on a random background character’s shirt...not useful. So...I totally hear what you’re saying, and I wish the opm manga had been licensed to a better company, because everything viz does to the manga is like they’re purposely trying to undersell Murata’s work (literally presenting it as something not worth buying), which, as the only legal eng option available, is just confounding and painful.

B) What inspired you to create them?Almost the entire cast of Novel1 was originally based off of characters I had before I started the novel. These are their stories (dun dun):Lyn: MYXA, THE TEMPORARY NO. 13 OF ORGANIZATION XIII. Or rather, her Somebody.Basically, she started out based off a sort-of-self-insert OC from my days in the Kingdom Hearts Organization XIII fandom who never really had much of a personality and existed just to fulfill my dream of dating Dilan/Xaldin (while adhering to canon as much as possible). Lyn has grown from that shallow beginning, of course, and is ironically now probably one of the least-like-me characters I have. I think I really took a comment my friend made like 6 years ago about how “Lyn is basically you” to heart lol.Ceron: DILAN, THE SOMEBODY OF XALDIN, NO. 3 OF ORGANIZATION XIII.He started out based off of my version of Dilan from those same days in that fandom. He’s a lot less changed and a lot more just… deepened and become more human over the past 8 or 9 years. I had a pretty good thing going with that character lol even if it wasn’t true to canon.Rhett: FACELESS SOLDIER MAN BECOMES YOUNG BOY WITH TRAGIC BACKSTORYHis character was originally some random soldier guy who’d lost his arm in a skirmish thing. Then one day my friend was trying to draw Aniello but the face came out looking really young so I added some cute dimples and BAM SUDDENLY ANIELLO HAD A SON WHO HE ABANDONED AND THEN SERENA ADOPTED HIM AND NOW HE’S A RAY OF SUNSHINE FIGHTING BACK AN INTERNAL HURRICANE OF RAGE?? I kept the missing arm, but made the story behind it a lot sadder. And the whole story of his life sadder. I’m sorry, Rhett.Serena: CRAZY SEDUCTRESS HORSE OC GOES MAD BECAUSE HER TRUE LOVE REJECTED HER, HATES LITERALLY EVERYONEShe was based off of an OC I had back in my roleplaying days who was… a terrible person (horse). Really terrible. I think her backstory translated to pre-Shadow-Aniello breaking up with her, so she just decided everyone sucks, time to be chaotic neutral, screw everyone over for the fun of it, mentally torture innocent people sometimes?? I don’t even know. She had problems. What inspired me to gradually get her to where she is now as the bamf hbic mama bear I love is that I hated her and she was horribly unrealistic. Plus Rhett deserved at least one good mom.Aniello: NIGHTMARE THE TERRIFYING FRIESIAN HORSE WARLORDAgain, from my roleplaying days. Really the only thing that stayed the same is he’s terrifying and doesn’t like to use contractions. I didn’t even keep the scottish accent. I did keep the nickname “Nightmare” for a while to differentiate from pre-Shadow-Aniello and post-Shadow-Aniello but then pre-Shadow-Aniello stopped being a lovely innocent young man who never did any wrong and I stopped needing to keep that distinction. I mean really I just wanted to make a villain that combined everything I love about villains, (sense of decorum, high intelligence, wit, raw power, an explosive temper), with characteristics I despise (greed, a crazy sense of entitlement, complete disregard for people and their feelings, etc), who had NO SAD BACKSTORY WHATSEOVER. And I think I did a pretty darn good job with him, too.Marius: MIKHAIL THE WEIRD, UNDEVELOPED BROTHER OF NIGHTMAREI don’t even know.I guess what really inspired me to make Marius as he is now is my undying love for Villainous Brother Duos, particularly when there is actual love/concern between the brothers (in this case it’s one-sided but it still makes my heart hurt happily). Marius’ story has always been about caring way too much about his little brother, but only recently I decided that he’s actually on Aniello’s side rather than constantly beating himself up over Aniello’s (supposed) death.MSS: The music video for Skrillex’ “First of the Year (Equinox)”. Not even joking. He developed into the adorable friend-shaped-friend he is now because I wanted to write a story without all the creepiness and drama I poured into Novel1.

E) Are they someone you would get along with? Would they get along with you?((Oh this question is SO FUN TO THINK ABOUT.))Lyn: Probably yes in both cases! Lyn is pretty easy to get along with, loves making friends, and likes to think the best of people when not presented with tons of negative evidence. She can be emotional, but she’s very friendly and sweet and I think I’d love to be friends with her.Ceron: Yes, and yes! We can chill out and read or talk about deep things. Ceron isn’t someone who opens up easily or quickly, but he’s chill and casually friendly as long as he’s not in a group situation. He’s… he’s basically me. I think we’d get along.Rhett: HECK YES MY BOI. Rhett is a ray of sunshine who wants to be friends with EVERYONE provided they’re not complete assholes and I fit that criteria at least. He might be a bit high energy for me to hang out with a lot (assuming I just met him as a person not as his creator), but he’d probably be super fun to have as a friend.Serena: UMM. MAYBE. Honestly I think just meeting her I’d be super intimidated (her ‘air’ is loosely based off all the strong ladies I’ve met and been intimidated by in my life bahahah). But if we had a chance to hang out I think we’d get along! We might not be Close Friends but she’d be good to go to for advice and stuff.Aniello: Nope. I mean he’d get along with me just fine but there’s no friendship from either side. He’s never been big on friendship in general? Just… things that will help him rise higher and get him what he wants.Marius: HmmMMMmmm he’s a big scary quiet dude but he’s got some surprises about him. If it was some AU where he wasn’t caught up in Aniello’s schemes, I’d like to hang out with Marius on a nature walk or something. He’d probably own a bunch of random unusual pets that he rescued. Nothing too clingy or dependent, just like… crows, squirrels, deer, and probably some semi-domesticated cats that all visit him and hang around his log cabin deep in the woods. Deep down he kinda just wants to be that curmudgeonly guy in the woods you’re slightly scared of but who turns out to be kinda cool and teaches everyone about respecting nature.Man.Why you gotta love your little brother, Marius. He ruins everything, including you.MSS: Absolutely! He loves to make friends and he’s super chill about everything. He doesn’t stick around very long, usually, but we’d get along while he was there.BONUS ROUND: Tyrus and Virgil: NOPE. These guys are assholes lmao I’d hate them as real-life people (and they wouldn’t look twice at me). They generally don’t care about most people in the world, and they’re basically those gross, drunk, objectifying creeps who sleazy-bar-hop to pick up chicks/dudes (with consent; they at least care about that) every dang night and occasionally get in bar fights (which is why they become bouncers so they can fight people on the job). Virgil is worse than Tyrus, who would be capable of a relationship if something Real came his way. I love them as their author but man they’re.. not great human beings bahahahah
