Oh hey, thanks, reader who inexplicably found this post from six years ago and interacted with it. It holds up well, I think.

I was thinking about the Scott Pilgrim/Homestuck videogame-nostalgia aesthetic and the surprising poignancy of beepy low-bandwith noises, and, I wonder how much of the present moment in politics comes down to the fact that you can’t cheat at video games very well. I mean, maybe it’s nothing, but it strikes me as kind of significant that so many of us spent our formative years in systems that were more or less inviolate.  In traditional sport, you can cheat outright and hope you don’t get caught, and even when you don’t there’s an awareness that the only thing really compelling your obedience to those rules is good sportsmanship and maybe a guy in a striped shirt. On the other hand, in newer electronic games, you’re basically interacting with a system of fixed consequences, and ‘sportsmanship’ is an archaic concept.  The system can (/must) be exploited, even broken, but the brute fact of those rules is not optional except in your choice to play or not play that particular game.  All exit, no voice, as the kids say these days.  There are exceptions- bug hunting, hex editors like the Game Genie, that kind of thing- but they’re not really core to most people’s experience of Zelda or Mario.  Even then you’re still just exploiting the game system on a deeper level rather than simply ignoring it; you need to really understand a game to be able to cheat that way, whereas when I’m playing American football, it’s pretty easy to cheat entirely by accident by not flagging pass interference or something. To phrase the thought for Maximum Discourse, a video game is authoritarian play.  The traditional audience for video games- nerds- tend to be the ones who look at the world through this systemic lens, who rarely use ‘soft’ power like social influence, but who do emphasize the benefits and risks of new technologies that ‘change the rules’.  Nerd attitudes towards the world are often absolutist ones- not political authoritarianism usually, but rather, a desire to find a reliable proscription for good outcomes in challenging situations, an appeal to some set of rules that can be understood and navigated. But it’s <CURRENT YEAR>, and we’re all nerds now.  Scott Pilgrim can open with Zelda music and have mass appeal.  Even the people that are good with soft power and social influence have this kind of systemic thinking in their vocabulary- most famously, with concepts like ‘structural bias’ against women, racial minorities, &c.  We seem to be much more aware of the rules we live by, as an object of study and as a source of human joy or suffering, but also much more likely to view those rules as exogenous and imposed.  And I figure at least some of that comes from the fact that a people raised on video games is going to look for solutions to real-world problems using the same framework that succeeded during their playtime.  When the people around us act in ways that are frightening or threatening, we don’t reach for the label ‘cheater’- instead, they become OP.
