As anyone who has tried getting an estimate to get a 17-year old boy its going to be 800 for inexpensive 1L car, 900 to get a 1.25L Fiesta or 1,400 for a 1.4L Zetec. and where? Is this appropriate? Villainous
A Vegebul Fanfic Collab with @supersaiyanerd
Summary: Bulma is a genius, but has decided that she wants to use her brains for evil. Yet what is a Supervillain, without a bit of muscle?
Enter Vegeta, a mercenary for hire. He is tough, and frankly terrifying, and his brawn clashes with her brains in a cosmic power struggle that leaves the good guys in a real state of panic.
Never before has evil been so deliciously exciting.
Also on Ao3.

Chapter 1: The Supervillain’s New Henchman
8-8-8-8-8
Failure was not something that Bulma Briefs was good at.
She had never really, actually failed before, so she was rather sore about failing now.
It wasn't even as if it was a real failure, or so she liked to think, but more of a… Temporary setback.
She needed that damn medallion.
She just couldn’t get over the fact that she was not able to acquire it as quickly as she had anticipated.
She didn't like waiting. She was not used to waiting.
Bulma was a woman who had been born with everything within her reach.
Coming from a wealthy family, she had always had everything she needed, whenever she needed it, and in all the colors available.
She was beautiful. Long, silky hair, the color of a cloudless sky, with bright blue eyes and lips as pink as rose petals. She had fine, alabaster skin, perfect teeth, and a voluptuous build that had men panting after her wherever she went. Thus, it had always been easy for her to use her feminine wiles to get her way.
Most of all, she was incredibly intelligent.
She had a certified genius-level IQ and an uncanny skill for public speech.
She had been slated to run her family's company since she had learned to read and speak three languages at four years old.
She finished high school at thirteen, two Bachelor's degrees at seventeen, her Master's at nineteen and her PhD at twenty-one.
She had the world at her feet, an arguably perfect life…
And she had been bored beyond belief.
She knew that there would have been millions of women - maybe even men - who would have traded places with her in a heartbeat, but to Bulma, her life had been one tedious, never-ending cycle of being immaculately gifted and perfect, and she detested it.
She needed something different…
Something exciting.
The answer came to her one day, when she was at another one of her boring philanthropic luncheons, an esteemed guest after she had invented a state of the art method for terraforming a nearby exoplanet so that the government can use it to plant rice. A police detective had been one of the speakers, and he had spoken about the various tricks and lengths that evil masterminds would go through.
He spoke about working in tandem with West City’s superhero, the Great Saiyaman, and his son, the Great Saiyaboy.
The detective had then said one thing that forever changed Bulma’s life…
“Well, I suppose being a supervillain could be exciting, but sadly for them, they could never get away with their crimes…”
It was like he had just given her a bold dare, and Bulma realized that she wanted to see the look on his face when a supervillain managed to pull off a successful heist.
Bulma realized that what she needed, to escape the monotony of her dreary existence, was to become a supervillain.
Which led her to her current predicament.
She had been doing well as a minor villain, but Bulma was nothing if not an overachiever, and she wanted to be the most super Supervillain to have ever… Villained.
And so, she needed to make a powerful supervillain-superweapon, but to make that, she needed a supervillain-super-powersource.
She learned about a special little trinket that had just been brought to West City a few weeks ago, a small medallion from an ancient warrior race that, under the right conditions, had enough elemental energy to power the entire northern sector, and she needed it for her newest invention.
She had gone into the museum, intent on stealing it, when she was thwarted by none other than the Great Saiyaman.
What ensued, after he had decided to take the medallion back, could not even be called a struggle, since he had basically plucked the item from her hands, not even breaking a sweat as he retrieved the medallion from her thin fingers.
Bulma got to thinking… She had all the know-how, but how was she going to win when the good guys had the strength to overpower twenty Bulmas in one flick of a finger?
She needed to be stronger, but she really hated the gym, and would not be caught dead trying to do weight training…
But then again…
She didn't have to do the heavy lifting, if she could just pay someone to do it for her now, did she?
Perhaps… She can just… Hire a strongman?
Bulma quickly looked into her online network, looking for ad space.
She needed some brawn to assist her brains, and she was gonna have to start looking for the perfect thug to act as a minion.
Bulma Briefs, Supervillain Candidate, was hiring.
8-8-8-8-8
Vegeta Prince was not the type of person who enjoyed quiet. He’d grown up in war zones, on battlefields, in the purest messes of chaos, and had always risen above victorious.
So why in the HELL was no one looking to hire him?
Hours upon hours, day after day had been spent looking for work, looking for something to spare him from the mind-numbing boredom. And nothing had come up.
Maybe destroying a city or two would calm his nerves. It was something to do.
Just as he was about to get out of his chair, he heard a telltale ping!, alerting him to a job opening on a job site he was subscribed to. With his otherworldly speed, he clicked it.
Wanted: Henchman
I am a villainess looking for some muscle, especially muscle that can take on The Great Saiyaman and his son.
Vegeta stopped for a moment, his eyes lingering on the name. That Kakarot, walking around in spandex, defending all that is good, saving the distressed and protecting the innocent. It made him want to vomit.
I am willing to pay a very high price for anyone who I deem worthy enough to be my henchman.
If you wish to prove yourself to me, send me an email at [email protected] for a pre-registration.
Go to the highest peak of the West Mountains on Monday at 8:00am.
The rest will be up to me.
Vegeta pondered for a moment. Whoever had written this, they were clearly new. Inexperienced, maybe even some pathetic weakling who did it for some tragic reason.
But on the other hand, it was a job. And that was exactly what he was looking for.
And a chance to beat Kakarot and his brat into the dirt? It appeared the pros far outweighed the cons.
Cracking his knuckles, Vegeta Prince grinned, knowing business was good once again.
8-8-8-8-8
“I am Spike the Devilman!” cried the man in the strange blue suit as he stood with arms akimbo, a pose meant to be menacing. He had large, webbed wings and a pair of huge green horns, with large pointed teeth and pinkish claws.
He looked like a bat. Not a devil.
Bulma wanted to roll her eyes, but refrained.
Just because she was a supervillain now, didn't mean she could be rude.
“I can fly!” he said, lifting off on his thin wings, before brandishing a pitchfork that Bulma hadn't even seen on him before.
“I can use this weapon for combat! Watch me!”
He then proceeded to do aerial acrobatics that had Bulma finally give in to the urge to roll her eyes, before she turned back to her pre-registration list.
She groaned.
She had spent the entire day with not a single ideal candidate in sight. And batdevil here, was the last man on the list.
The most promising one had been an android who reminded her of the typical portrayal of Frankenstein’s monster. He had been strong and had the terrifying bad-guy henchman looks, but it all fell apart during the interview, when she realized that he was more harmless than a three-day old puppy.
This was hopeless.
She let the last candidate fly around a bit more, before she finally called him down.
“Um,” she began when he looked at her expectantly.
“You are on the shortlist!” she lied, crossing her fingers behind her back. “I will call you back.”
The man beamed, before he gave her a short salute, and flew off.
She sighed.
What a waste of a day. Perhaps she could set up another screening schedule.
She was about to get up to place the small table, chair and umbrella set that she was sitting on back into her storage capsule, when she heard a loud, indistinct rumble go off in the sky.
She stood up, turning her head to look for the strange sound, when a very small but sudden, concentrated explosion a little to her right made her jump, a terrified squeak leaving her lips.
“What the hell?” she screamed, spinning to face the direction from which the unexpected attack came from.
There was absolutely nothing there.
She scrambled to encapsulate her things, sticking the tiny containment unit into her pocket before she turned once again to survey the sky.
She pulled a small laser gun out of her utility belt, pushing the folds of her white lab coat back so she can crouch slightly, gun at the ready.
Her heart was beating a mile a minute, and while she was scared, she realized that this, this, was exactly what she wanted, why she decided to become a supervillain. This rush, the adrenaline and danger…
Whoever had attacked her, was taking his or her sweet time.
“Who the hell are you? Show yourself!” she called out.
An answering blast of light came from her left, and she responded with a few blind shots of her laser gun.
She realized belatedly that she really should have brought more defenses and weapons, but dammit, she was new at this.
It wasn't like she got a full job orientation.
The ground started to shake, and she stood stunned as she realized that the entire mountain range was now pulsing with violent energy, emanating from a spot just a few meters away from her. It was concealed by a small hill, but Bulma could see dangerous flames of purple ki leaking out from the sides, and she realized that whoever, whatever this attacker was… Was extremely volatile.
She shot at the small hill, willing the attacker to appear, but even after the small hill had been decimated by the blasts, the attacker remained hidden.
She saw a flash of movement, and she straightened as she understood that her attacker was now on the move.
She tried to follow the streaks of blue with her eyes, despairing as she realized that the attacker was just too fast.
She felt a gust of wind blow through her, and she held her gun to her chest, noting with apprehension that the attacker was drawing nearer.
Another flash of blue appeared to her right, and she spun, lifting her gun to fire, only to feel a powerful tug at her wrist, a second before she stared in horror at her now empty hands.
The attacker had taken her weapon.
Eyes wide, Bulma scrambled to try to run away, but before she could even deign to move, she felt a powerful cage of limbs wrap around her, trapping her frail arms close to her torso, holding her immobile against a hard, unyielding body.
“Let me go!” she screamed, lifting both legs up to try to force her captor to lose balance, but the being remained firm, lowering a malicious head to breathe harshly against the back of her neck.
She saw a thick shock of spiked dark hair from the corner of her eyes, a moment before she heard a deep voice growl into her ear.
“I am here for the henchman vacancy. Please, pardon my tardiness.”
The arms unlocked from around her, and she scrambled away, falling painfully onto her hands and knees, before she turned around, sitting on the ground as she stared up at the man.
She brought scared but indignant eyes up to meet an intense gaze, blacker than the darkest night and sharper than a warrior's blade.
The dark hair she had glimpsed before stood in a riotous flame-like wave, drawing down into a severe widow's peak that slashed over a stoic face with thin, stern lips and an angular jaw.
She noted that he wasn’t too tall, but his body looked hard enough that it could have been sculpted from stone, with firmly defined muscles and thick arms covered in light caramel skin.
He was wearing a blue tank top, tucked into a pair of the tightest pants she had ever seen, showcasing powerful thighs and leg muscles that clearly explained how he could have moved so damn fast.
He was impatiently tapping his gold-tipped white boots on the hard ground as he stared at her impassively, watching her marvel over his form.
“If you are quite done drooling over me, I suggest we begin your screening methods so you can hire me,” he said, voice arrogantly loud, shocking Bulma into alertness.
“Excuse me, who are you?” she asked irritably, getting up to go toe to toe against the frankly terrifying man. “You're not on my list of applicants.”
“I did not bother sending an email since I knew I would be the best that you can find,” he smirked at her, raising a brow as his lips formed a mocking smirk. “Am I incorrect?”
She sputtered, unable to deny it.
Deciding not to even dignify him with a response, she crossed her arms, huffing.
“Well, could you at least tell me your name first so we could get on with the interview?” she asked, staring up and down at his very impressive physique.
He leaned his weight on his right leg, cockily crossing his arms across his chest, and Bulma could have sworn that the smug bastard flexed his biceps as he moved.
He puffed up his chest, and with a low, raspy voice that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end, he growled.
“My name is Vegeta Prince, and I will be your new strongman. Let me see whatever trial you have in store for me, and I guarantee, I will complete it.”
8-8-8-8-8
Vegeta looked curiously at the woman who could potentially become his employer.
To say that he had been surprised upon seeing her would have been a monumental understatement.
He had no idea, that the person posting that stupidly simplistic ad was, in fact, an incredibly beautiful woman.
He had been expecting a jaded old lady or a large, monstrous female who wanted world domination as revenge for a terrible life.
However, when he saw her atop that mountain, glaring dejectedly at her increasingly ridiculous applicants, he couldn't help but be intrigued at why such a good-looking person would decide to pursue the life of a villain.
Well… As if he should talk. He was pretty damn striking, if he did say so himself.
Woe betide anyone who dared to disagree.
Yet, he had his reasons. Vegeta was born to be destructive, his powers were literally all about destroying things and he did not have a well-meaning bone in his entire body.
This woman though… she was rather soft-looking, with pinkish white skin and baby blue hair that screamed innocence, and yet here she was, on the lookout for an evil henchman. He watched, interested, as the woman politely dismissed the last of the morons who had come for the job vacancy, and he cracked his knuckles as he decided to show off a bit, as his method of introducing himself.
It had worked very well.
The woman was definitely interested, if the darkening flush on her cheeks and the hastening beating of her heart was any indication.
“This job is mine,” he thought smugly as he stated his name, and the woman defiantly stared back at him, raising her chin as she stood up to full height.
“Well Vegeta,” she said. “My request is simple. Show me what you’ve got.”
He grinned, a wide and feral smile that showed off the sharp edges of his teeth.
“Well then,” he growled. “Get ready to be truly blown away. I assure you, I am not like anything you have ever seen before.”
“Well, then, dazzle me,” she dared. “I just had all the other applicants show me their powers. Come on, let's see what you're capable of, homeboy.”
He hooked one arm under her armpits, and the other under her knees. He smirked at her pink-stained face, shifting his weight from one leg to another, before he, without warning, shot into the sky.
He smirked snidely at the terrified screams that his sudden action wrenched from the woman’s surprisingly foul mouth, and his smirk turned into a full-on grin as the blue-haired woman gradually ceased her yelling, as she realized with blatant fascination how high they had actually flown.
“You can fucking fly!” Her eyes went wide with awe. “Not one of the other applicants could do that. I mean, the guy before you could, but it was with wings, and he wasn’t this fast. You… You can actually fly. No wings or gadgets or anything!”
He grinned. “If you think that's impressive, watch this,” and without a single hint or warning, he let her go.
He listened to her scream as she fell. He looked between her and the distance from the ground.
500 feet.
400 feet.
300.
200.
100.
Once she hit 50 feet, he shot down, and easily scooped her into his arms once again.
She was shaking.
Honestly, he knew she could have handled it.
“What. The. Actual. Fuck.” She looked at him, her cheeks flushed red, but now from rage.
“You said you wanted to see what I could do.”
“I didn't mean dropping me from 600 feet in the air, asshole!!!”
He watched her shake, and slowly, her body went still. Her eyes met his once again. “While that was a dick move, I will admit that was impressive. Your speed is phenomenal, and you do appear to be able to control your flight quite well. I guess you can show off a little more.”
He grinned, and she sighed. “And by that, I mean you can show off without trying to make my body hit the ground at terminal velocity.”
He soared back into the clouds, spinning around, doing loop-de-loops, watching her face light up. Oh, he surely had this in the bag.
At one point, he flipped his body upside down, holding her only by her wrists. She screeched, but he assured her he wasn't going to drop her this time. Her feet sliced through the clouds, and he could hear her laughter at the sight.
He touched down onto the ground, and watched her stumble as her frail body started to become used to being on solid ground once more.
“Oh wow!” she cried. “That was amazing! That was tons better than a roller coaster!”
He smirked. “Of course! I could fly ten times the speed of the fastest carnival rides. The speed I showed you just now was nothing.”
“Well,” she answered, her flushed, happy face seemingly lighting up the gradually darkening sky. “If you’ve still got more of that in you, how about you take me back to my lab?”
He raised his brows. “Why woman… We’ve only just met. Isn't it rather early to invite me back to your place?”
Her face flushed another interesting shade of red, and she stomped one foot on the ground, drawing a laugh from within his chest.
“First of all, you asshole,” she said through gritted teeth, “my name is Bulma. Bulma Briefs. And secondly, I need you back in the lab so we can perform a strength screening!”
He held a hand out, and the woman gladly took it. He used that hand to pull her up to him until he had her small body in his arms, before he lifted off, going straight up into the sky.
“In which direction?” he asked.
“It's in the very center of West City, Capsule Tower 3,” she answered, and he nodded, taking off.
However, something seemed strange about that location…
“Is that not a very visible area? Why would you put your lair in the center of the city?” he asked confusedly, peering down at the woman in his arms.
“Well, it’s my building. I figured, why not use it as my evil lab?”
He snorted. “Gutsy. Dumb, but gutsy.”
They flew the rest of the way in silence, until he finally saw the top of the tall tower, blinking up at him through the clouds of the early evening sky.
He landed on the helicopter helipad, placing the woman down on her feet.
“Follow me,” she instructed cooly, leading him to a small elevator near the edge of the wide rooftop.
The elevator hummed an infuriating tune as they descended, before it finally stopped, opening up into an expansive space with extremely high ceilings, filled with inexplicable little gadgets and complex machinery.
“Vegeta,” she said, turning to him as she stood at the entrance. “Welcome to my laboratory!”
He looked around. Metal was scattered everywhere, blueprints were strewn all over the walls in favor of wallpaper, and a large computer covered one wall.
Various unidentifiable gadgets filled the large area, interspersed with what appeared to be advanc3d robotics and a large tank full of green liquid.
He had to admit, it was impressive.
“And what exactly are we doing here?” He stared at his future employer, her eyes glowing in the light of her super-computer.
“Oh, right! The strength screening!” She ran off, and he sat there for 1 minute, then 5, then 10, and finally, after about 20 minutes, she ran back in, holding 3 spheres.
“Here you go!” She grinned at him. He raised a black eyebrow.
“And you brought these, why?”
“Well, each one is made of a different alloy. This first one,” She held up the one at the far left. “Is a pure steel alloy. Each alloy is stronger than the last. You see, the Great Saiyaman has extraordinary strength, and you'll need to be on par with him if I'm to steal the medallion I need. So what I want you to do,” She gave him the sphere she was holding. “Is crush each and every one of these.”
He looked at her, then at the spheres, then back at her. “You didn't have any of the other candidates try this.”
She shrugged. “You are able to fly, and the blasts you fired at me had quite a bit of punch to them. So, I'm sure crushing these things will be no challenge.”
He looked at the sphere in his hand, and crushed it as though it were merely paper. “Like that?”
Her blue eyes widened. “Exactly. Damn, when I said crush it, I did not expect this. You literally turned it into a pancake.”
He smirked, and took the next one, and crushed it like the last, again showing no problem flattening it.
“You just crushed solid titanium. Basically the hardest metal on the planet. Ok. Wow. Well,” She held up the last sphere, smirking. “This is made of some of the hardest metals on the planet, and some from meteors, don't ask, in order to create what is theoretically the hardest metal to exist. I’d like to see you crush this.”
He took it from her hand, and tried to crush it like the others, but found it was harder than the last two. He had to admit, the woman had brains, because he had never found anything he couldn't crush with ease. He gripped harder, harder, and finally, the sphere gave. The blue eyed woman smirked, a victorious grin on her face. “That is definitely strength that will give the Great Saiyaman a run for his money.”
He smirked, “Woman, this is the strength that can crush Saiyaman and his insipid excuse of an offspring.”
“Confident, aren't ya?” she asked, an eyebrow raised in appraisal.
His smirk just widened further. “I am fully aware of my own capabilities.”
8-8-8-8-8
Bulma looked thoughtfully at Vegeta as she realized that he, in all his cocky, evidently overbearing glory, was undoubtedly the man that she needed for the job.
He was brilliant.
He was absolutely perfect.
His skills, his power, and that amazing strength… it was what she needed to defeat the Great Saiyaman.
He was also rather infuriating, but she was damn sure that she could live with that.
Putting up with the attitude would be worth it.
“Alright, Vegeta,” she said straightening to her full height. “I can see now that you really are the best man for this job. I wish to offer you a job as my official Henchman.”
He smirked, bringing his fists together and cracking his knuckles in glee.
“Good,” he said. “I am looking forward to it. Now… About the compensation…”
Bulma, stopped him by pulling out a small square of paper from her pocket, and she pushed it up to his face so he can see the salary that she was offering.
He whistled. “Not bad.”
“So you accept?”
“Looks fine to me.”
“Great!” she beamed, before she turned around, heading for a large table at a corner of the lab.
She sat down on the large office chair, and motioned at one of the cushy, small couches in front of her table.
“Take a seat, please? I’m just printing out your job offer, which I already arranged this morning. Just need to fill your name in,” she said, typing down on her keyboard as she squinted at the screen.
She pulled the job offer sheet out of the printer and held it out to Vegeta, who took the paper from her with a look of apprehension.
She went and entered his name into another document that she also printed, and handed to Vegeta as soon as he was done reading and signing the offer sheet.
His brown rose as he looked at what she was holding out to him.
“What on Earth is that?” he asked.
Bulma blinked. “Your employment contract.”
Vegeta’s eyes were wide in disbelief. “You… you want me to sign an actual, legal, employment contract?”
She cringed slightly at his question. “Duh! Of course! I may be a Supervillain, but I still need to follow labor laws. I would hate to get on the workers’ union’s bad side, you know?”
“I suppose,” he muttered, looking over the document, before pausing at a particular clause.
“Wait,” he said. “This part… Does this mean I get overtime pay?”
“And health insurance! With dental!” she beamed.
Vegeta shrugged, and after a few minutes, he laid the paper down on her table so he could sign it.
Bulma smiled. “So hey, I’d hate to rush you, but can you start on Wednesday?” she asked, giddy.
The tough, terrifying man blinked openly at her. “Today is Monday.”
“I know.”
He shook his head with a chuckle, before he answered. “What the hell. Sure.”
“Great!” Bulma said, extending a hand to Vegeta. “I look forward to working with you, Vegeta-san.”
He smirked, before he took her hand, and shook it with a firm, nearly arrogant grip.
“As do I, Bulma-san.”

I passed my driving test last month and did my pass plus last saturday. I'm now stunned to find that the lowest i've seemed to get my car insurance is 5000, I'm a full time 6th form student so how am I meant to pay that? Is there ANYWHERE where I can get cheap insurance for my car? (except gps box insurance with restrictions such as fines for going out past 11pm) any previous experiences? or recommendations? Should I sue my parents...?
When I was 4 years old I was in a car accident and my parents had a settlement with the drunk drivers insurance and recieved 100,000 dollars for me. At such a young age I didnt really know what was going on and they told me that it had to be put up till I was 18 and I couldnt have it. Well that money is no longer there and I am now 20. As I grew up they told me that it all just went to lawyer fees but obviously I am old enough now to know better. I found out from other family members that they just blew it. I am now married and have three month old baby and I could have used that money to help get a house for us or help with the financial problems that come with being a new parent or newlywed. Should I sue them to get what was mine to begin with and if so how do I go about it and what are the chances that I will win?""

Car insurance is abnormally expensive for me (18yrs old)? What am I doing wrong?
I go on gocompare, confuse.com, comparethemarket, etc. to check prices of different cars but I keep getting insurance at the price of 7,000+?! And the crazy thing is, it was for a Peugeot 2002 106 which is like 1.1 litre. which came to the lowest I found. Which was 7,000+. I fill in the details truthfully, such as locked home garage, very low miles per year, etc, but I can't seem to get cheap insurance? Everyone online says they get insured for around 2,000 on a Corsa, Peugeot 106, Citroen C1 and on like 1.4L+ cars etc. HOW TO HELL? Should I just buy my 1st car then insure it on my parents name then ask me to be put on as a named driver? My friends do that and pay around 1,000-1,200 on 1.6L cars.. I am allowed to change provider and remain under the same program, and according to Healthy NY, pregnancy is not a preexisting condition if the insured is a sole proprietor , which I am. Is it legal to be declined health insurance for this reason?
I applied with a major insurance company in California, am a single vegetarian in my mid/late 30s no children, extremely healthy never been diagnosed with anything, exercise regularly. I guess they dug up that I had taken a fertility drug in the past - I was never even diagnosed as infertile - it's a really cheap common drug that stimulates your ovaries to produce more eggs but I had no partner to get pregnant with so to was just something I got from a fertility doctor if I wanted to get pregnant with donor sperm. That's not even covered by insurance if I ever want to do that again and the drug's like $20 you can practically get it over the counter it's so common I know tons of women who use it. I didn't even apply for maternity care to be included in my insurance, just a basic policy. Is it legal for them to decline me because of this? So if a woman has a baby they are no longer eligible for insurance? Most women who get pregnant take this drug (including both my sisters) yet they still have insurance. Car hit by uninsured driver - how to recover the costs?
My stationary car was hit by an uninsured driver in March 09. The insurance company made me pay 500 excess and said that this will be fully recoverable as the other driver was at fault. The car was then written off and I was paid the value of the car. In December the other driver was found guilty of driving without insurance, fined and given penalty points. Even though my policy gives me legal cover, it has now been 11 months since the incident and they do not seem to be very active. Also, my policy expires next month and as the claim is still open, the insurers assume that I lost my no claim bonus and quoted me twice as much for the renewal. All Dogs Need a Job: How to Keep Your Dog Happy and Mentally Healthy
Mary P. Klinck DVM, DACVB is author of the chapter"All Dogs Need a Job: How To Keep Your Dog Happy and Mentally Healthy," from"Decoding Your Dog," a highly acclaimed publication by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists on dog behaviour. As part of Goodnewsforpets 20th Anniversary and in celebration of Take Your Dog to Work Day, we're highlighting this column by our archive. Can you tell us how you chose to be a veterinary behaviorist?
Mary P. Klinck DVM, DACVB with Meike.
I became a veterinarian because I adored animals and could not think of another career that would be as rewarding. I developed a fascination with the science of animal behavior and learning for a pupil, and a veterinarian, I observed that a number of my patients had behavior issues or could at least gain from behavioral management. Once left unaddressed, and/or mismanaged (even by people with the best of intentions), behavior problems worsened, damaging the relationship with the proprietor. This really drove home to me the importance of the area of veterinary behavior.
What do new owners overlook most before purchasing a puppy that later leads to destruction in the house?
Many pet purchases are impulse buys. A purchaser can be carried away by just how cute the puppy seems and neglect to think about what it'll be like when it grows up (bigger, stronger, more active, etc.). Behaviors which are cute in a pup (chewing, jumping up, barking, pulling on a leash, etc.) tend to be unacceptable in a dog. People may also not look at the depth of the commitment when getting a puppy or dog. Dogs may live well into their teens, and also an owner should know that they will have the time, physical and financial resources, etc., to look after a dog for his entire life.
All dogs have physical demands (like exercise, toileting, eating, drinking, etc.), however, people sometimes forget that they also have behavioral needs (for social interaction, mental stimulation, etc.). A dog also needs help learning how to behave in and out of his home and what's secure and what is not in his environment. If the owner isn't meeting the puppy's behavioral needs, he will find an outlet for them independently. The result might be pretty undesirable!
People also often select a puppy or puppy based on the look of the breed or on a romanticized idea of exactly what the breed/dog would be like. Think about that:
(a) How a puppy of a given breed is shown on TV, at the movies or in books Isn't necessarily the way that strain (or any actual puppy ) will be;
(b) Breed fanciers, books or web sites may Emphasize the positive qualities of this strain, but may not mention temperament, activity level, or other features that could be challenging for an average proprietor;
(c) Dogs of a specific breed can vary markedly. By way of example, dogs bred to work (hunt, herd, do military/police-type actions, etc.) are typically very active and require significant exercise and mental stimulation. Dogs of the identical breed, bred for conformation or puppy functions, may be a lot less work to get an operator. Dogs bred carefully and selectively for certain traits of this breed also differ from those consumed by so-called"backyard breeders" or puppy mills. Nonselective breeding makes for much more variability and you also may not get what you expect!
Keeping in mind activity level, can you suggest some breeds you would recommend for a retired couple who want to travel and take their dog ?
An individual ought to be careful making assumptions about a puppy based on its own breed, since the individual might not be typical of this breed. It's probably most important that the dog be comfortable in changing environments and meeting different people and animals. These characteristics are not specific to particular breeds but could be decided by getting an adult dog whose character is somewhat understood or a pup whose relatives' personalities are known. If the retired couple is looking for a quiet dog with limited exercise needs, they likely wish to steer clear of terrier types (which are often quite busy ), and other breeds with high workforce, such as herding (e.g., border collie) or some sporting dogs (e.g., German short-haired pointer), or any dog from working lines.
When one adopts a rescue dog what kind of socialization pattern do you recommend originally?
Puppies go through a sensitive period for socialization when they're developmentally prepared to learn about what is safe and what is not in their own world. This really is between about 3 and 12 weeks old. If one gets a puppy, the owner should benefit from that period. If a person adopts a dog which has passed this age, socialization will not have exactly the same impact on the dog's behaviour. An older puppy or adult dog can learn from his adventures but he is not as a"blank slate." Attempts to socialize a dog may not be appropriate if he's already fearful of, or even competitive toward, certain people or animals. If that's the scenario, it might be best to seek out the help of a veterinary behaviorist.
Socialization refers to controlled optimistic (not impartial, and certainly not unpleasant) vulnerability to various individuals, animals and environment, so the puppy learns that meeting new people and going to new areas is nice, not scary. It also involves avoiding anything which may make the puppy feel anxious or frightened. These principles may also be applied to introducing an older puppy or adult dog to new people and dogs.
Having a new dog, introduce people, creatures and encounters gradually and in a controlled manner, to see the way the dog handles them. Examples of things to prevent, at least initially (since they may be overwhelming to your puppy, and so a terrible experience), are: taking him to the dog park (too many excited dogs might snore on him) and taking him into a block party (too many adults and children for one to restrain his encounters with them).
To prevent forcing a preconceived protocol in your recently adopted rescue dog, how long should you give it before deciding a course of socialization?
Part of keeping good social behavior is planning interactions with people and animals, and tracking themto promote positive experiences and avoid bad ones. This means introducing the dog to people and to animals you know will not hurt or scare him. With a new puppy, one might not have to wait long to have him meet creatures and people outside the household. When he seems quite settled in his new home (which may be when the afternoon after he arrives), then you may start arranging for him to meet some of your pals and their (dog-friendly) dogs.
When family members work or are in school all day, do you recommend choosing a dog walker through the day to maintain a puppy aroused? And, if so, is it better to hire a walker that might be bringing other dogs along or if he/she go it alone with your puppy?
This will be dependent on the puppy's age and toileting needs, as well as his or her temperament. A young puppy will need to have regular toileting opportunities (because he can not be expected to"hold it" for more than the number of hours equivalent to the number of months of age, and one). If you're thinking about a dog walker for an older puppy or dog, that person ought to be carefully interviewed to determine what he/she will do with your dog. For example, will he/she walk him or let him out to relieve himself and then play with him in the lawn? Will he/she bring different critters together? How many, and will they be the same individuals? Consider whether this will be a positive experience for your dog. Remember that multiple dogs imply a higher chance of fights/injury and that your pet walker will not be able to devote as much individual attention to your dog. It's also important to figure out the puppy walker's coaching plan and also to make sure he/she isn't likely to become disciplining (punishing) him inappropriately.
If you should invent 1 dog toy which would address several behavioral problems what would it be?
There's no single dog toy that can provide a fast cure for many behavior issues. However, interactive toys (such as food puzzle toys that produce the dog function to get his treats) can certainly help to use up excess energy or occupy your pet when you're busy. Various types of such toys exist, and dogs have individual preferences (one toy does not fit all).
Retired racing greyhounds make great pets and many become consummate couch potatoes. Is there an action and surroundings you recommend for new owners to interact and socialize with them in the general public?
Groups which adopt retired racing greyhounds frequently require the puppy not to be off-leash except at a fenced-in area (to avoid the dogs from becoming hurt or lost if they take off after something they see). Otherwise, owners can do exactly the very same things they want with another type of dog, depending on the individual dog's character. Owners of retired racing greyhounds may also be able to network with other greyhound owners to get group actions. Play dates with dog friends in a fenced yard or other place, are great. Walking on leash or more structured dog activities such as nose or agility function are other options.
Because many owners are fair-weather forms, what do you recommend if their exceptionally sociable dog that's been walked every day in spring, summer and autumn, suddenly finds itself relegated to the house for extended hours, becomes bored and begins destructive behaviour?
It is important to pre-empt this kind of scenario by foreseeing the dog will require something to perform. On days when the weather prevents the owner from taking the dog out for exercise, interactive activities with the proprietor (s) are a good substitute. You can think of it as taking time you would typically spend on the walk and spending it upon play or reward-based training in the house (for instance, you could try suggestion coaching ). This provides exercise, mental stimulation and interaction on you, just in a different context. You can even supply independent activities for your dog (for instance, giving him food mystery toys). And there is also the choice of classes in a doggy activity that interests you both.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
When getting a puppy do lots of research to be certain you are getting one that will complement your lifestyle. Place him up for success by planning ahead to meet his behavioral needs. This means giving him acceptable ways to make use of his mental and physical energy and assisting him to grasp the way to behave correctly by showing him what to do and rewarding him for his efforts.

“I Take Responsibility” and the Limits of Celebrity Activism
The current cultural moment is one whose urgency feels particularly ill-suited to the sort of vapid pageantry on display in the video made to promote the “I Take Responsibility” initiative.Source: Confluential Films / YouTube
Hollywood is perhaps one of the last places to look for inspiration—practical, emotional, or otherwise—in times of crisis. Still, our gilded class’s response to the societal shitstorm that has dominated our minds and screens for the last four months has felt notably unfastened. In April, the comedian and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres made headlines when she joked that life while quarantined in her ten-thousand-square-foot Beverly Hills mansion felt like “being in jail.” The same week, the Times reported on the four hundred inmates being held at Rikers Island for minor parole violations, despite a worsening pandemic. The inmates included Raymond Rivera, a fifty-five-year-old man who, after having his case delayed several months, contracted covid-19 in jail and died the day after state officials lifted the warrant against him. As public sentiment has turned from coronavirus-induced fear to sadness and anger following the tragic killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, the celebrity response has ranged from milquetoast to head-scratching.
In a video shared to Instagram on June 2nd, the movie heartthrob turned Silicon Valley financier Ashton Kutcher choked back tears as he recounted a pre-bedtime conversation that he had with his two young children. He explained how his son wanted to be read to first, but Kutcher told him that his sister would go first because “for some boys, girls don’t get to go at all.” The story was meant to serve as a poignant and instructive allegory for the scores of Instagram users who had commented “All Lives Matter” under a recent post of his where he had opined “BLM.” Around the same time, Virgil Abloh, the artistic director of menswear for Louis Vuitton and the founder and C.E.O. of Off-White, was being memed into a fine dust after posting a screenshot of his paltry fifty-dollar donation to a bail fund started by the Miami art collective (F)empower. And, on Thursday, a two-minute video for an initiative bluntly titled “I Take Responsibility” joined the ever-growing canon of the unsought celebrity P.S.A. The video features a coalition of white actors and entertainers asserting their culpability in perpetuating anti-black racism. Filmed in a sombre black-and-white and scored with saccharine piano, the spot shows Sarah Paulson, Stanley Tucci, Kesha, and others vowing no longer to “turn a blind eye” or “allow racist, hurtful words . . . to be uttered in my presence” and “to stand against hate.” The Web site for the initiative allows visitors to decide which vice they feel most guilty of (“Saying racism doesn’t exist,” “not being inclusive,” etc.) and to “make it better today” by pledging to do things like “donate to families affected [by racism]” before directing them to various organizations and petitions. Elsewhere, many celebrities simply invoked proverbial, and often literal, “prayer hands” emoji (🙏)—a de-facto “get well soon” to society and all its ills.
The missed notes have been particularly grating in the pop-music world, where many stars have built careers and amassed huge profits working within black musical traditions and selling their work to black audiences. As black communities are being disproportionately decimated by the coronavirus and black people continue to die at the hands of law enforcement, there are some who feel that figures like Drake should use their gigantic platforms to do more than, say, offer a fan the chance to fly on his private jet. (On June 1st, Drake was challenged by his fellow Toronto artist Mustafah the Poet to match a four-hundred-dollar donation to a black bail-fund network. The rapper reportedly replied, “Say less, brother,” and posted a donation receipt for a hundred thousand dollars.)
A similar desire to push industry leaders toward more decisive action in combatting anti-black racism is likely how #TheShowMustBePaused was first conceived. Led by Jamila Thomas and Brianna Agyemang—two black women who have worked in executive roles at major record labels—the initiative was meant to be an industry-wide day of observance for “the long-standing racism and inequality that exists from the boardroom to the boulevard.” According to the stated mission on the project’s Web site, the women hoped that this day of reflection would be a positive first step in the effort to “hold accountable the industry at large . . . including major corporations and their partners who benefit from the efforts, struggles and successes of Black people.” On Tuesday, June 2nd, scores of artists posted black squares on their Instagram feeds, often alongside the hashtag #BlackoutTuesday. Nearly all the major music labels observed the blackout, and explained, with varying levels of specificity, what a continued commitment to this mission would look like at their respective companies. The trend was quickly picked up by many people outside the industry, too. And, somewhat ironically, the flood of black-square posts ended up saturating the #blacklivesmatter tag on Instagram, displacing resources and information that some organizers had been compiling for years. By Wednesday, it was back to business as usual on many artists’ feeds—after all, there were deluxe-edition albums to promote.
The current cultural moment is one whose urgency feels particularly ill-suited to the sort of vapid pageantry that typically constitutes the “socially conscious” arm of a celebrity’s public-relations repertoire. Given all the vested corporate interests that celebrities have, and the timeworn tradition of rewarding famous people for the appearance of political integrity more than its actual presence, it’s wishful to expect every musician with more than a million followers to be schooled in the perils of systemic racial inequality, much less to be equipped to speak publicly about it. In fact, it would probably be in our collective best interest that not all of them did. Still, one hopes that, among the faction of the highly followed and highly influential who were jumping to post black squares and vague sentence fragments, there are some who could use their visibility to do more. The increased pressure on artists to monetize their personal brands and the subsequent professionalization of social media have turned these solipsistic Internet spaces into de-facto storefronts for mini corporations. Sadly, it seems that many of the famous names behind these accounts have also adopted the sort of risk-averse, politically opaque rhetoric favored by Fortune 500 companies—opting for tepid platitudes and lazy hashtag activism in lieu of more resolute (and potentially alienating) public displays.
The tiptoeing of the entertainment industry’s biggest names has been made all the more conspicuous by the activity of their less popular peers. Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, and now in the wake of the George Floyd murder and other police-related violence, smaller and independent artists have used their reach to compile and disseminate resources like recommended viewing and reading lists (flawed as they may be), to amplify the work of organizers, and to publicize bail funds to donate to in support of the many protesters who have been arrested in cities across the country, and they have gone to protests themselves. Corpus Family Mutual Aid Fund, the initiative started by the New York creative collective affiliated with the Queens hardcore band Show Me the Body, has amassed more than twenty-two thousand dollars in just over a month, with the bulk of proceeds going to members of the New York City D.I.Y. music scene who have been financially affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
Of course, not all of the ultra-famous have blown hot air. Various high-profile figures have disrupted their seemingly endless promotion cycles and retrofitted their social channels to speak pointedly about the current moment. One such figure is “Star Wars” ’s John Boyega. Despite apparent pushback from some of his fans, the British actor, who is of Nigerian descent, has been very outspoken in disparaging racism and brutal policing and has voiced support for protests around the world. On June 3rd, a video of an impassioned Boyega addressing the crowd at a large Black Lives Matter demonstration in London circulated widely online. Elsewhere, figures such as the Chicago rapper Noname, whose popular online book club has highlighted titles by Frantz Fanon, Paulo Freire, and Octavia Butler, have continued to use their platforms to galvanize their following and espouse their unequivocal beliefs. Some celebrities who in the past had been perhaps overzealous in exploiting their soapbox (ahem, Kanye) even seem to have stepped back and taken a more measured approach this time around.
What shouldn’t be overlooked is the work that plain old non-celebrity people have been doing. Within the past few weeks, funds for, among other causes, pretrial bail for trans people being held in New York City jails, George Floyd’s young daughter Gianna, and Ramsey Orta—the man who filmed the murder of his friend Eric Garner in 2014 and was released from prison this year—have been flooded with contributions. Bail-fund organizers in particular have seen an unprecedented spike in support in recent weeks. Many people have been posting receipts of their donations and challenging friends in their network to match them.
What these examples show is not that every single celebrity has to commit to leading the revolution but what can happen if these platforms were treated less like public-relations buildouts and more like the powerful communication channels and resource vectors that they are. Ideological fluffiness on the part of people with huge online followings can be at its best a wasted opportunity and at its worst deleterious to more substantive activism happening on social media. A #blacklivesmatter post on Jennifer Lopez’s Instagram page reaches an audience larger than those of most regional television stations. And although reposting an aerial video of a street mural is nice, it lacks the efficacy of a bail-fund link to free those arrested while marching across it.

Don't Make Me Over 35
*Just realizing that I hadn’t put up the last couple of chapters in this space, but since I’m trying to finish up my fics, gonna go ahead and add these on my tumblr. Thanks.*
Sam was strumming his guitar and singing, or humming, or lipping words. He had a few days off of work. He spent them trying to find something to do around the house. He found out that Jonesy's people did all of the stuff around the house… and that they hung all around the house… all the time. Did Unique take on their home as a studio to work from until getting a new one? He wondered as he looked at her, lying on her belly on the loveseat while Jonesy was on her back on the couch. They were discussing their contracts, filming schedules, travel arrangements, maternity leave… "And we have candidates in place for nanny services when you return. You just need to make a decision."
"Oh!" Sam finally interrupted, "Nanny services?" He repeated, eyes on Jonesy instead of Unique.
Unique answered, "Now, before you try to go off on some tangent about nannies not being a good resource or children need their mothers or wherever you're intending to go with that look of disdain, let me tell you – women who can't afford nannies oftentimes spend less time with their children than the women who can… and those women often get less done around the house. Mothers have a full time job with a nearly impossible workload. A nanny is simply an additional pair of hands so that a mother does not have to compromise her career or other responsibilities while she raises her children."
"Mrs. Baylock said she was an extra pair of hands," Sam said.
Jonesy furrowed her eyebrows and shook her head, "That's only frightening if your baby is the Antichrist." She noted Unique's confused face, "Omen reference."
"I don't want to know your obscure movie references," she told her.
"Obscure? Movie is a classic!" Sam muttered, plucking his guitar strings a little harder than before.
"You do love the classics, don't you?" Unique asked with a smile. Sam threw her a look and she shrugged. "It's not the old days anymore, Sam. Jonesy can actually have a highly functioning career AND be a great mother. Have you ever seen Beyonce? Of course you have. That child looks loved as hell. You don't understand what a nanny is and what she does is the problem."
"Unique is providing the nanny as a perk of my job, Sam. So, it won't cost us anything extra and like she said, I will be around the baby more than anybody else in the world," Jonesy told him, rubbing his hair, as she did. He leaned into her petting, though his face still wore a sour pout, so she continued to coax him. "Think of her time with the nanny like time with a babysitter or time with a family friend or even time in a classroom. Some people send their kids to daycare so they can work. Mine will be relatively close, sometimes even on site and her caregiver won't even have to tend to any other children."
"I don't really like the thought of daycare, either. I mean, at least until its time for her to go to school, she should be at home with her mother."
"Her mother won't be at home, but if you feel that strongly about it, there is a such thing as a stay home dad," Unique reminded him. Sam furrowed his eyebrows even more. "Oh, so you want somebody to stay with the baby – just not you. Alright. Anyway…" Unique rolled her eyes and sat up, to scoot closer to Jonesy with the information. "If Jonesy tells me that she doesn't want a nanny and she wants to be at home and simply on call for times that I need her, that is fine. But Jonesy told me and we have been arranging that she wants to work, full time. She wants to travel with me for the long haul. I don't want to do it without her, but I will if I have to."
Jonesy waved a hand, "No, you don't have to. Why would you have to? I have a free nanny." To Sam she said, "We discussed this. I mean, we discussed that I wasn't going to quit my job. Remember? We couldn't afford it and I didn't want to."
"But, we didn't discuss a nanny, though," Sam said. "With all of the things that have happened, I just… honestly don't trust anybody." He shook his head and shrugged. "I mean, I can work out things so that my schedule lines up with when you won't be around so that I can watch her."
"Then, we wouldn't see each other and she wouldn't see the both of us, at the same time. Sam…" She looked at Unique, "Can we talk tomorrow?"
"Of course, Hunny. I'll be here, as always." She collected her things and rushed out.
"It feels like you're planning out the baby's life without me, again." Sam set the guitar aside and got up to sit on the couch, by her. She sat up, too. "It's not about the time or the plan or the person… well – it kinda is that too, but… this is OUR baby. We've discussed this."
"That's not what this is, Sam. This is my career. I was working on the plan and trying to get everything figured out before coming to you, Chief. I wanted it to sound as appealing as humanly possible before bringing it up, because I knew that you wouldn't like it, but I also know that its going to be excellent for me and it will not disadvantage her, at all. Not in the least bit. I'm not hiring a nanny so that I can spend summers in Tahiti or something. I'm hiring a nanny so that I can run errands, cook, clean up, and do makeup without carting Babycakes in a pouch on my chest." She held her hands out, "I've been collecting instances of children raised with nannies who have better relationships with their mothers than children raised by their mothers without nannies. I mean, both of these things can work, I'm not saying that kids with nannies are better off, at all. But not getting one isn't really going to work for me."
He looked at her sad eyes and nodded his head. "You're right. And I believe you. I don't think you were trying to plan things without me. But, now that its on the table… I… What can you tell me that might help me feel more comfortable about Cakes being with some stranger?"
"Only that everyone is when they're little. Do you know how many people I trusted in my youth that didn't mean me any good? But, my mom and dad couldn't protect me from everything, all of the time. It's reality, as hard as it is. But, she will not be on a battlefield. She'll be nearby. I will see her. We will be in each other's company, but if Cakes cries while we're recording, I have someone who can step outside with her. If… I break out in a rash, I have somebody to make sure she's not exposed to it. My intention is that the nanny can literally have whatever life she wants, outside of my schedule for her. Within that scheduled time, if I finish Unique's makeup and want to take my daughter out for a sundae, I can. But if Unique has a bruised nose from falling over and I have to spend hours making her look like she'd never seen a bruise a day in her life, I have that opportunity, as well."
"The nanny sounds like she'd be doing my job, while I'm at work…" Sam said.
"But, she won't be. She'll be doing the jobs that we don't have enough bodies to do while we do what we can and have to with the bodies that we have. We're getting her now, so that she can meet the baby on site. So that she can become familiar with the woman who will be telling her how to help out with her child and so that you can size her up, yourself."
"Wait… there's gonna be a nanny before the baby even gets here?" He said, shaking his head.
"Yep. This will be like her pre-field training. Knowing the parents and what they like and need is an important part of being able to know what the child will want and need, while she's in her care. I wish that there was some kind of movie about a good mother who had a nanny. They totally exist and I'm totally going to be one."
"Well, maybe one day, they'll make a movie about you," Sam commented.
"There's not enough film in the world to cover my story… wait… does that mean that you're on board? Even without the presentation of my evidence?" She asked, with a wide grin.
"I trust you, Jones." He gave her a kiss on the lips. "I think you won me over with the I can size her up, myself." He nodded and Jonesy covered her face.
"This poor woman is not going to have a chance…" She mused.
"This is the kind of thing you need to have a damn competition and show for," he muttered, which made her giggle for a moment. Then, she stopped and thought for a moment, then pulled herself up and rushed off, with her cell phone. "Um… Jonesy?"
His arms were folded when Mercedes opened the door for the young lady. "Hi, Mercedes! It's so good to see you again! And this handsome man must be Sam," she said and held a hand out to shake his hand. He accepted it and she introduced herself. "My name is Bree. Thank you for your consideration in this competition." Two more women joined them, within a few moments and the cameraman from Unique's show came in to set up some cameras while they held a group interview.
Jonesy treated it very similar to how they had treated the auditions for the show, welcoming the women, "In this age of reality television, and in my quest to find the best nanny for me, we had this fun idea to make a little web show of the process. As you have all agreed on the application, we now have the cameras rolling. For the moment, our bedroom is off limits, but all of the other rooms have cameras and we'll be reviewing them, as well as watching you ladies during this time. It's only three weeks. I am due in one week, if things go as planned. Two of the weeks will have Babycakes on board, or should. I hope you all make the most of it."
Sam didn't have much to say. He was in complete support of the cameras and the scrutiny, for the purpose of finding someone trustworthy enough to look after their baby in a matter of weeks. Being engaged to an online sensation meant that sometimes, life was looked at very closely, anyway, but looking at other people closely for this was something he could agree to.
Ryvie Jones and Mary Evans were around. Any day now, Jonesy would go into labor. Renee Stobb took charge of things, as best as she could, mostly by going through all of Jonesy's already best laid plans and making her own schedule to reflect that. "Jonesy is ridiculously organized and everything has already been thought out. I feel that I need to be ready to place my life on hold and sync my world with hers if I really want this thing."
She shook her head and laughed, annoyed, "Bree spent the entire afternoon playing games with her little sister."
Bree and Ra were sitting on the floor and Bree told her, "Awww, yours looks better than mine! What's all of that? Right there?" She pointed to the finger painting.
"That's ice cream!" Ra cheered.
"Ice cream? I LOVE ICE CREAM!" Bree cheered. "Hey… I wonder if your mom and sister will let us get some. What do you think?" Ra smiled, excitedly and Bree took her hand. "Come on. This is how you ask, nicely, okay?" She asked Ryvie, "Mrs. Jones, if Maserati and I clean up our mess really good, will it be okay for me to buy us some ice cream?"
Ryvie stared at the girl for a bit, then nodded, "If you two clean up all of your mess, Miss Bree can go get you some ice cream and bring it back here. But, you have to help her out, like a big girl, okay?" Ryvie told her toddler, who rushed to follow the instructions while Bree wondered, "So, what kinda ice cream you want me to bring you?"
Bree smiled and told the camera, "I want to be the nanny. I love the ladies. I love their web shows. I loved the Diva Experience. Jonesy's makeup art. Unique's drag. I love all of this stuff. But, I also love hanging out with kids. This job, if I can get it will be someone that I admire in an industry that I adore paying me to do a thing that I love." She traced a circle with her finger, "Full circle win, if I can somehow get this."
The other woman, Mack, was Unique's former personal assistant. She said, "My job became less necessary after Miss Jones came into Unique's life. I still ran some errands and kept up with the studio maintenance - being sure that things were organized and clean and accepting deliveries and keeping up with inventory. But, I lost my job when we lost the studio, so this is going to be very helpful to me. I already have an established ongoing rapport with Miss Jones and I have experience being that extra pair of hands that they speak of…" She frowned, "I don't have much luck with babies, but that's what this training is for, right?"
Sam said, "It's… not training. This is your interview."
"Well, I mean, I can DO babies. I just haven't assisted in the helping with babies department yet. I'm a renaissance woman. I can multitask and I'm a quick learner…" She bit her lip. Sam already looked unimpressed.
He frowned at the camera while Mercedes simply laughed, "She is getting a kick out of this. Not one of these women are right for the job."
"They ALL have their skills," she said. "He's being unfair."
"Babycakes, when you watch this, know that it was your mama's doin,' that you ended up with whatever nanny you'll get stuck with." She laughed even harder, now.
Renee was reading up on doula training made easy while Mack was memorizing the game plan for when Jonesy went into labor. Sam looked at Bree, on her phone and asked, "What are you working on?"
She furrowed her eyebrows and answered, "I'm not working on anything. I'm playing Candy Crush."
"You're... Do you realize that you're in a process to try to get a job?" He asked.
"Of course," she said, stopping her game, "What would you like me to work on Mr. Evans?" She smiled brightly, awaiting instructions.
"I didn't have like anything in mind, particularly. But, the other two ladies are doing their thing," he informed her.
She glanced at them and nodded as she whispered, "They're a little behind. Unique announced that Jonesy would be looking for a nanny months ago! Renee was not familiar with Jonesy, at the time and Mack was familiar, but did not qualify for the job, therefore didn't make any attempts to learn any information. You know why I'm here, Mr. Evans? I am here, because the moment that announcement was made, I contacted the studio with my credentials as a long term neighborhood babysitter, my qualifications as a doula, my work experience in three births, to date and a few years of daycare services, from my own home... complete with references. Neither of these ladies want this job more than me and neither of them are more qualified. I will do whatever you ask me to, but in the meantime, if you've got nothing, I'm really obsessed with Candy Crush."
He folded his arms, "All of that was in your file?"
"I haven't seen my file, but I sure hope so," she said with a smile.
"You're like... 18..."
"You are so sweet and cute, Mr. Evans!" She said and wrinkled her nose, returning to her game.
He shuffled his way over to Jonesy and she was looking miserable and rubbing her belly. "You okay?"
"I'm crazy. This was a terrible idea. Why did I decide to do this?" She asked.
"You're impulsive," he answered honestly.
"I am so damn mad about that fact. I don't want these people in our house and I'm tired of looking at their faces." She grumbled. "But, I can't pull the plug. That'll make me look bad."
"Look bad? How? You have literally, in the past year been violently assaulted (more than once), going through a pregnancy, started a new job, completed a major project, had your workplace burn down, and had a seizure. That has all literally happened to you within a year's time. How are you going to look bad for finally getting tired?" He asked. She shrugged. People would say things. She already knew they would. "I'll shut it down, if I have to. I will go in there right now and say 'Bree won, everybody go home,' if I gotta." She raised an eyebrow.
"Bree? Hmph." She rolled her eyes.
"She's the most qualified, isn't she? Doula and daycare and all that stuff? I don't know, unless she lied, because I didn't see any of that in her file. I combed through those files."
"Nothing to do with her being young and supple and pretty," she commented.
"And nothing to do with a what? She's alright, I guess. I wasn't paying attention. I had my Daddy Glasses on, trying to find my daughter's nanny. But lemme see," he turned and looked at Bree, sized her up and jokingly blew out a whistle. "You're right, Jones. She's got the goods, huh?" The face that she gave him was enough to slay him, but for some reason was met only with his chuckling. "Oh, so you wanted to try to prod me, but you didn't want to hear that. What did you want to hear, Babe? She's invisible outside of the paperwork that claims that she can do the job. I had my money on Stobb, but she doesn't have credentials."
"She's got credentials," Jonesy said. "They all have credentials."
"I mean to take care of a baby and slash or child. Keep up, Jones. This is serious business we are dealing with, here." He threw an arm around her and told her, "I think if you're stressed, we need to pull the plug on this. Its only an online thing and nobody is paying you to do it. You have real shows to consider, coming up sooner than necessary." He gave her a kiss on the side of the head.
"It's only a couple more weeks. Baby will be here in days and I won't even care about the cameras," she said.
"Mmhmm." He intertwined their fingers and kissed the back of her hand.
"But you like Bree, huh?" She repeated.
"I didn't say that. But, I think your mom likes her and your sister likes her. She's good with kids and people. I mean... she plays Candy Crush instead of studies, even though she knows she's being recorded. That's either sheer idiocy or she's confident in the skills."
"And she's pretty," Jonesy said. "I'm not gonna get mad if you admit that the woman is damn pretty, Sam."
"That has nothing to do with the job, though. I thought you would like her for it," he said.
"I do. I'm glad that you chose somebody. That's gonna make all this much easier," she admitted.
"But, it would have been easy if you gave me three resumes with the stuff on them and no photos!" He fussed.
"But, then you would have insisted that you had to see them in action… You're a stubborn man, Sam Evans. You don't make things easy for me."
"I try!" He snuggled against her. "I want to make things better for both of you."
"You'll be perfect. I already know it… I want a foot rub," she said and poked her bottom lip out.
"Stubborn Sam is on it!"

Financial Samurai 2019 Economic Outlook And Personal Goals
Happy 2019 everyone!
With my 2018 finishing with 3.8 4.0 out of 5.0 stars, I've thought long and hard about how I can make 2019 better. I've found a solution.
My 2019 theme is: live the good life. If you live the good life, how can life not be better?
Some people like to tighten their belts during economic uncertainty. I used to be one of those people in 2008-2009. But after a raging bull market since 2009, I feel it's OK for my family to start spending more on life instead of letting our investments piss away our wealth.
Besides, if panic increases, there will be lots of things going on sale. Let's first discuss my outlook for 2019 and then I'll go over my goals.
Financial Samurai 2019 Outlook
Things are uncertain, to say the least. From policy errors by the Federal Reserve to trade wars by Trump to a drastic slowdown in corporate earnings growth (20%+ down to ~7%), we are facing many headwinds in 2019.
Despite the 4Q2018 sell-off in the stock market, JP still wants to raise rates another two times in 2019 to keep inflation at 2%. There's an old saying on Wall Street: don't fight the Fed. You will get run over.
If the housing market is weakening, the stock market is correcting, and if the labor market softens given companies are now 20% less valuable on average, it's baffling why the Fed thinks inflation will accelerate in 2019.
The good news is that 4Q2018 has baked in a lot of the negatives. Valuations are now at around historical averages and expectations have been reset. And unless JP is a complete idiot for going to Princeton and Georgetown, he will probably adjust his interest rate stance if we enter full bear market territory. And let's put things in perspective, a -6.4% year for the S&P 500 is not that bad.
The question everybody needs to ask themselves is whether the equity risk premium is worth taking. If you can get a 2.45% risk-free rate of return or pay down more expensive debt (mortgage, student loans, credit cards), is it worth taking risk in equities to maybe make a potentially greater return?
My answer is no. Give me a 2.45% – 5% guaranteed return any day while the world recalibrates. The stress of trying to make perhaps a 10% return in the stock market is simply not worth the premium since there's probably an equal chance stocks will go down. The peace of mind of a risk-free return should not be under-appreciated, especially if you have more certain ways to make money.
Of course, there are no guarantees. Therefore, my plan is to keep my existing public investments just the way they are (45%/55% stocks/bonds) and use my monthly cash flow to pay down debt and invest in a 70%/30% ratio. At the very minimum, my Solo 401(k), SEP IRA, and son's 529 plan will all be maxed out. If the S&P 500 gets back to 2,800+, I will be aggressively selling down more stocks.
I'm in the “low interest rates for life” camp. Once again, I don't see the 10-year bond yield finishing over 3% in 2019. This is a risky call since the 10-year bond yield is not far away at 2.75%, and reached as high as 3.2% in 2018. But this call simply means the yield curve will continue to flatten as the Fed stubbornly continues to raise rates, leading to a recession by 2020.
Given it takes 2-5 years for real estate cycles to play out, I see further weakness all year in expensive coastal city real estate markets like San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, LA, San Diego, Boston, New York, and Washington DC. Cities with unlimited land for expansion like Las Vegas, Dallas, and Denver are likely going to continue weakening as inventory surges higher. The heartland of America will not be immune to a real estate slowdown unfortunately.
The positive in real estate is that mortgage rates will continue to stay low. With rising inventory and low interest rates, affordability will increase and bring in new buyers. There might even be a refinancing boom again. I don't see a real estate crash like the stock market crash of 4Q2018. Instead, we'll see a soft landing as prices slowly decline by another 5% – 10%.
Finally, I predict more people than ever will generate new income sources beyond their day job. Whether it is starting a website or investing in assets that are countercyclical to the stock market, people will no longer take their job security for granted.
Only the misinformed believe a large correction in stocks has no bearing on future corporate employment decisions. You must always be forward-thinking when it comes to investing.
Buckle down folks! If you do not get your finances right in 2019, you might end up losing years worth of time and effort. 2019 is not the time to be a hero. Instead, 2019 is the year to bullet proof your finances by earning more based on what you can control.
A possible scenario to be aware of by 2020 according to Nomura
Financial Samurai 2019 Goals
1) No gray hairs, no chronic pain. I've learned over the years that our body reveals our true stress level no matter what we do or what we say. My goal is to keep things like sciatica, lower back pain, TMJ, grey hairs, wrinkles, hair loss, migraines, and excessive weight gain at bay in order to live longer and feel healthier. Stress is the silent killer of our generation.
Specific activities for the year include: exercising and stretching 3X a week, taking walks with my son 5X a week, incorporating 15 minutes of meditation 3X a week, and eliminating sugary drinks. I will continue to maintain a body weight of between 165 – 170 lbs at 5′ 10″.
2) Remain unemployed until September. My son turns two in April, and I plan to remain a stay at home dad at least until then. Although, I've given myself a green light to find full-time work after two years, my ultimate goal is to remain a stay at home dad until he is eligible for preschool in September if he is mature enough to attend. If he is not, then my goal is to remain a SAHD until September 2020 for 3 years, 9 months total.
In order to stay unemployed, I need to make sure my risk exposure is appropriate so I don't stress out about losing too much money, get out of the house at least two hours a day for some me time, and attend more social functions. Activities include tennis, softball, startup gatherings, Napa/Lake Tahoe getaways, and our first family trip to Hawaii. Of course, if the bull market continues, then staying unemployed will be relatively easy.
3) Hire help for the business. After almost 10 years of running Financial Samurai with only my wife, it's time to get some help with writing. I'll be slowly looking for someone who is WordPress savvy, trustworthy, intelligent, reliable, dedicated, believes in my five core principles, enjoys writing and wants to earn some steady side hustle income. The fit has to be fantastic, otherwise, I'll just continue to operate the site as usual.
I realize many sites my size or smaller have 1-4 people, on average, working to write content and handle some of the business elements. Now that I've discovered how great it is to hire help around the house, it's only logical to hire help for our business.
4) Focus on profits. Since I'm going to hire help for the business, I want to get a return on my investment. To not get an ROI on my capital expenditure would make me a foolish businessman.
I or my new hire will write more review posts, develop more affiliate partnerships, build my blog marketing business, update my severance negotiation book, and maybe create a new Financial Samurai product. I'll still publish my usual style posts 2-3X a week. There will just be more content all around as there is no limit to how many posts and pages a website can publish.
It's going to feel great to finally start seriously focusing on monetizing Financial Samurai after 10 years. I already get the occasional flak from readers who criticize my work and don't pay me a cent. So I now plan to unabashedly take full advantage of my platform to take care of my family, especially if the economy softens.
5) Grow the Financial Samurai Forum. For four years, I was a forum junkie in college. It was one of the best ways I learned about investing and finance. But in order for a forum to grow, it needs to be nurtured. Therefore, I plan to continue posting and corresponding at least 5X a week on the forum to build the FS community.
I have a 5-year plan to grow the Financial Samurai Forum into one of the best financial forums on the web. Specifically, I want to double its traffic in 2019. The forum is geared towards people who fundamentally believe that making more money is a better way to grow wealth than mainly through saving. I want to build a community that is open-minded and always curious about new ways to get better. I'm aiming for thought diversity not groupthink.
6) Help my boy reach the following milestones by year-end. Being a full-time parent is an incredibly rewarding job because you get to teach and witness progress on a daily basis. I've discovered that through Financial Samurai, foster youth mentoring, and coaching high school tennis that I enjoy being an educator. Below are some specific goals we are looking to help him develop by 2 years 9 months.
Play and Social Skills
Sit comfortably in circle time for more than 10 minutes
Enjoy playing with the piano, guitar, and drums
Play with toys without mouthing them
Screw and unscrew jar lids and turn door handles
Build towers of more than 6 blocks
Copy a circle with pencil or crayon
Show affection for friends without prompting
Be away from parents with supportive and familiar people for 4 hours or more to prepare for pre-school
Coordination
Walk down stairs unassisted
Maintain balance while catching a ball or when gently bumped by peers
Throw and attempt to catch ball without losing balance

Able to self-calm to fall asleep
Able to tolerate and stay calm during dental visits
Able to brush his teeth without whining or crying 3X a day
Is potty trained before preschool starts in September
Dresses and undresses self by figuring out buttons, zippers, and straps

Uses “in” and “on”
At least 75% of speech is understood by any caregiver
Follows 2-step unrelated directions, e.g. “give me the ball and go get your coat”
Understands “mine” and “yours”
Says words like “I,” “me,” “we,” and “you” and some plurals (cars, dogs, cats)
Understands half of what we communicate to him in English, in Mandarin
The next 12 months is going to be a huge challenge due to his growing temper tantrums. Another challenge is staying healthy since we're all getting sick more often now as he's exposed to other kids. Luckily, my wife and I haven't been sick at the same time yet. We'll finally introduce some screen time to him after his second birthday, which should help keep him occupied during trips.
7) Spend $1,500 more a month on life. We have frugality disease. We are spending less today than we were in our late 20s, despite having a much higher income and net worth. Our estate planning lawyer sessions really made us realize we will likely die with too much.
I've been slowly spending more money on things that may improve our lives. For example, the $4,000 large jet tub I bought in 2014 has come in handy for family bath time now. The $15,000 I spent on the outdoor hot tub in 1H2017 was one of the best purchases ever. Further, I have no regrets paying $58,000 cash for a used family car in December 2016 either. Baby steps on the road to lifestyle inflation!
We will allocate the extra $1,500 in spending towards more babysitting help, more massages, bi-monthly house cleaning, and quarterly gardening. We will purchase at least economy plus tickets for all our parents to come visit. Further, if we take our first flight as a family, we will purchase economy plus tickets as well.
We are also going to regularly give to two charities all year. One will be to a center for foster kids and abused youth. Another will be for children with visual impairments. I also like supporting public park tennis initiatives.

8) Pay off $200,000 of mortgage debt. Paying off my SF rental condo in 2015 felt wonderful. I don't care whether it goes up or down in value because I truly plan to own it forever. Selling my SF rental house and paying off a $815,000 mortgage in the process also felt terrific. No matter how much more I could have made investing in risk assets, I've never regretted paying off debt.
Our ultimate goal is to be debt free by 2022, when our boy is ready for kindergarten. Paying down $200,000 a year in extra mortgage debt will accomplish this goal. In a bear market, it feels great to earn a guaranteed return. But it's also important to have lots of liquidity to take advantage of opportunities as well.
9) Aggressively search for a larger house. I dodged a canon in 2018 by not buying a larger house for more money. I wrote two offers for San Francisco homes that both got rejected. I was seriously going to try and buy this one expensive SF house in a great neighborhood, but by the time I was going to put in an offer, they had accepted another offer on November 1 for asking. If I had bought the house I'd be feeling nervous today since the stock market corrected by 20% soon after. It's not unreasonable to assume to house is now worth $200,000 (4.5%) less today.
Meanwhile, the seller of the house in Honolulu I've been eyeing since 2016 gave up trying to find a buyer in 4Q2018 and rented out the house from Oct – January to short-term tenants. The original asking price was $4.7M in 2016. Today, I think there's a good chance they will accept $3.5M – $3.7M because they finally dropped the ask down to $3.98M.
I want a bigger house in SF so my parents, in-laws and sister can come visit for a longer period of time. One more bathroom and 500 sqft more of space would be ideal. However, if I move to Honolulu, I won't need a bigger house since my parents have their own house.
I anticipate there will be many more deals in 2019 given inventory will likely be up 50% – 150% in San Francisco and Honolulu. I suspect the IPOs of Uber, Lyft and others will put a -10% floor on SF prices.
10) Be a voice for at least 50% of the population. Due to the high cost of living, there are very few personal finance bloggers who live in an expensive coastal city. This makes rational sense, especially if you are a FIRE blogger. But a full 50% of the national population lives in expensive coastal cities and other big cities around the country that face slightly different challenges. Same for many big city residents around the world e.g. London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, Mumbai, etc. Therefore, I have an opportunity to establish Financial Samurai as a go-to resource for big-city audiences.
It's going to be fun tackling topics such as: private grade school tuition, the feasibility of retiring early with a family in a HCOL area, forsaking wealth and prestige, the dangers of creating multi-generational wealth, featuring diverse cultural backgrounds, and more. My goal is to convince big media to provide a more diverse perspective on financial independence since not everybody can or wants to move to a low cost area of the country.
11) Be more forgiving of myself. No matter what project I undertake, I always run through the finish line. Financial Samurai's finish line is July 1, 2019 after I made a promise in 2009 to publish 3X a week for 10 years. After that, who knows the future.
The funny thing about this finish line is that it is completely arbitrary. There is absolutely no need to put pressure on myself to produce so much content, especially if I'm having a rough week or sick. Financial Samurai surpassed my expectations long ago. Therefore, I'm going to give myself four weeks where I'll just publish one post plus I'll take it easy the entire month of June, when traffic is slowest.
By giving myself a break, I hope to sleep in more regularly until 6am. For the majority of 2018, I was naturally waking up by 5am after going to bed around 11pm. But during 4Q2018 and after daylight savings, I started naturally waking up as early as 3:30am to get my writing done before my wife and son woke. This crazy early time must have been due to increased anxiety from the stock market collapse.
With more sleep and less stress, I hope to improve my overall mental health and happiness. My desire to constantly grind stems from mistakes made in high school, plenty more rejections as an adult, and an indoctrination since I was a kid that I need to try harder as a minority to get ahead in America. I know I have a really good thing going now, so I don't want to take my good fortune for granted.
12) Celebrate big and small wins. To make the hustle more worthwhile, we will celebrate all our achievements as parents, writers, and entrepreneurs. A celebration can be as small as opening a nice bottle of wine. These celebrations will also help us fulfill our goal of spending more.
Every evening I will highlight something specific I appreciate about my wife so she always feels recognized and loved. She is an incredible full-time mom who also launched the FS Forum, finalized our revocable living trust, registered How To Engineer Your Layoff and Cutie Baby with the Library Of Congress, and is responsible for all ongoing business accounting. It's clear I haven't done a good enough job appreciating her efforts over the years, which is why I'm committed to do more for her in 2019 and beyond.
Steady As She Goes
If we can grow our net worth by just 5%, I'll be happy. I'm willing to forego upside investment potential to help ensure our net worth goes up in 2019. Despite our public investments accounting for only about 30% of our net worth, it gave me the most stress in 2018. This will change.
I still have hope the Fed will slow down its rate hikes. If they do, I'm confident the economy will chug along at 2% – 2.5% GDP growth and not enter into a recession. However, there are no exciting positive catalysts on the horizon except for a trade agreement with China by end of 1Q. 2019 will likely be another volatile year.
The last two years working on FS and being a SAHD has worn me out. Given we save most of our after-tax business income by living off our passive income, I'm excited to live it up more in 2019 and use my “vacation credits” to take it easier.
If you have any tips on how to smartly inflate your lifestyle without feeling guilty, I'd love to hear them. I also want to learn how to inhale the roses more often without feeling the need to always be productive.
What are some of your goals for 2019? How do you see the stock market and economy unfolding?

Understands “mine” and “yours”

Walk and maintain balance over uneven surfaces
Use both hands equally to play and explore toys
Learn to pedal a tricycle
Daily Activities
Able to self-calm in car rides when not tired or hungry
Tolerate diaper changes without crying or whining
Has an established sleep schedule of 10 hours or more a night and 1-2 hours of nap time after lunch at least 5X a week
Able to self-calm to fall asleep
Able to tolerate and stay calm during dental visits
Able to brush his teeth without whining or crying 3X a day
Is potty trained before preschool starts in September
Dresses and undresses self by figuring out buttons, zippers, and straps
Communication
Is able to consistently use 3-4 word phrases e.g. “I am hungry,” “The garage door is white,” “Walk with daddy,” “Financial Samurai is the best!”

This doesn't mean we can't go lower. And let's put things in perspective, a -6.4% year for the S&P 500 is not that bad. If it wasn't for the huge post-Christmas rally, performance would have been much worse.

How Did We Survive?
It’s 2017. I’m not sure what, say, my 90-year-old Grandmother envisioned this year would look like when she was born in the 1920s, but we're definitely a futuristic and digitally advanced society that now relies on technology BIG TIME. Hell, I was born in 1982 and that’s practically the Stone Ages for kids today. My almost-3-year-old niece will never know a world with landline telephones, answering machines, cassette tapes and dial-up modems.
We rely so much on technology now that I often wonder how we ever survived without some of the everyday things we use now at work, in our personal lives, for commuting, entertainment and more. But the thing is? We did survive. We didn’t know what we were missing. We didn’t know how much easier, convenient and enjoyable life could be. And in a lot of ways, it was a simpler time. You went to a party/holiday/gathering and everyone was present. There were no iPhones or dog filters on Snapchat or faces to swipe left/right on looking for a date.
Here are some of the ways we had to “survive” back in my day:
GPS. Now? If I’m ever going anywhere -- a three-hour road trip or a couple towns away to a new restaurant to meet a friend -- I get into my car, plug my iPhone in, type in the address into Google Maps and just...drive. No questions asked. The voice on the phone will navigate the ride and tell me where to go, where to turn, how long I have until I arrive at my destination, and when I’ve arrived. It doesn’t get more simple than that.
But it wasn’t that long ago that “smart phones” didn’t exist, and while the Internet was very much a thing, it was limited. If you were going on a trip to a different state, you’d go on something called MapQuest (is that even still a thing?) (OMG it is; I just looked) and type in your current location along with your destination. Then, you’d print it out. ON PAPER. How the hell did we do this? It’s absolutely psychotic. You’d have six pages of directions with tiny ass font and had to drive whilst simultaneously trying to read and follow along and not lose your place. What an absolute nightmare. And don’t get me STARTED on pre-Internet days when you had to use maps. That is absurd.
Uploading pictures online. Nowadays, go to a wedding, concert, birthday soiree or even just a random night out and you can not only TAKE a photo (or 100 photos, if you’re me) on your phone, but you can instantaneously POST them. Folks sitting at home; bored, watching TV and covered in Cheeto dust can pull up Facebook or Instagram or whatever and actually see the photo you just put up and watch all the fun you’re having and see the cute outfit you’re rocking in real time. Cool! Back in high school and college, however, we didn’t have this. We took pictures, sure -- but we brought out disposable cameras to bars and parties, took 27 photos that night that we never saw and therefore couldn’t redo/retake, and had to wait to get them “developed.” Then? You’d bring out that little envelope of 27 photos next time you were seeing your friends so they could look through them and if you were NICE you got “doubles” printed so they could have a copy. There were no digital versions, there was nothing to post, nothing to make your “Profile Pic,” and CERTAINLY nothing incriminating that sat on the World Wide Web until you died, which, I’m cool with.
DVR. I don’t watch live TV. Ever. I either watch Netflix, stuff On Demand, movies, OR, I record live TV and watch things later. A little invention called the DVR made this easy for people like me who have the attention spans of gnats and don’t want to be bothered watching 12 minutes of a show and then 5 minutes of a commercial...and then repeating that until it’s over. No, now we can watch an episode of Dateline uninterrupted and at our own convenience, even if we weren’t home Friday night when it originally aired. (I’m always home on Friday night when it airs, but you get the point) Glorious!
Growing up, this wasn’t an option. I wouldn’t have even fathomed or dreamed of a world where this could exist. If you loved a show, you either saw it when it was on or you didn’t. End of story, shit outta luck, snooze you lose. You didn’t get another chance unless that episode ended up being a “repeat” weeks or months later so you could finally catch it. Suuuuuure, maybe you lived in a modern household where y’all recorded shit on VHS, but that wasn’t a fool-proof system. And if you WERE home to watch that night’s episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, well, you had to suffer through every commercial. Those were called “bathroom and snack breaks.”
Music. Music has become one of the most accessible things on earth, which I LOVE. Think of a song -- any song that’s ever been recorded since the beginning of time -- and you can hear it. Right now. You can purchase it so you have it at your fingertips (er, eardrums?) at your disposal, or you can ‘stream’ it online via sites like Spotify and YouTube. As a music lover, I can’t think of anything better.
ESPECIALLY because when I was growing up, this wasn’t the case. You’d listen to the radio and hear a new single by the artist you loved, and would be DYING to hear it again -- except after that initial experience you’d always catch the tail end of it or miss it completely. You’d then do asinine things like putting a blank cassette tape in your boombox, waiting for hours for said song to play on the radio and hit “record” so you finally had it. OR, you’d buy an entire tape or CD just because you loved that one single even though the rest of the album was total dog shit.
Phones without Internet. I have an iPhone, and I use that thing for...every thing. GPS, camera, texting, phone calls (eh, not really), social media, online dating (eh, not anymore), Googling stuff, you name it. I can’t imagine a time where I didn’t have everything I needed in a tiny little device.
And believe it or not, I got my first cell phone in high school. I went out a lot and my parents liked the idea of being able to get in touch with me (or me having a phone in emergencies), so I got some dinky little Nokia phone that did nothing. NOTHING! It made phone calls. End of list. You couldn’t “text,” there was no Internet to surf, there were no “apps” and social media wasn’t even a thing then. Maybe -- MAAAAYBE -- if you were lucky, that thing had some low-budget games on it. But essentially the phone’s sole purposes was to be, well, a phone. AKA the very thing I RARELY use my phone for now.
(I had that Pink Razr phone)
So, going back to my original question: how did we survive?
I think we did just fine.
What’d I forget to include? Let me know in the comments!
