Let's talk languages in In Somnis (and general language headcanons I have for characters)

Truthfully, I'm not sure how exactly I'm going to go about this in the actual fic itself because realistically not everyone would be speaking the same language nor at the same fluency. For the ease of telling a story I might just not have anyone really acknowledge this and just pretend everyone speaks the same language but I also feel this isn't true or accurate to the story I want to tell so I'm still figuring out how realistically I want to handle this topic in In Somnis (as I could also use it to help highlight certain themes I have if I do make languages a big deal but once again that comes with an assortment of other complications).

Biggest example being is that Apple doesn’t actually speak Italian very well (and eventually Japanese too once it gets to that point in the story). She’s just fluent enough to get herself by (especially after already having been living there for about 2 years before the start of the series) but she struggles a bit at learning new languages. Do I lean into this or not? I do worry how it would complicate things such as communication down the road. But perhaps that's just the struggle I need to work through as an writer...

Anyway! let's talk about some headcanons!

As I said earlier Apple doesn't speak Italian very well! On the other hand we have Reborn who is a polyglot and who I see as someone who takes a special interest in languages. I think Reborn would try to teach Apple Italian but because I also headcanon him as Sicilian I definitely think he tries to teach her Sicilian too (which is a bad idea especially at the start because she's already struggling hard enough with one language why are you throwing two at her now). On the other hand we have Luce who I headcanon as Northern Italian (From Milan). I think it would be funny if Luce would try to teach Apple Northern Italian slang and intonation and accent. Something that annoys Reborn to no end (which only makes Luce wanna do it more!) and only proves to confuse Apple more lol. Now what languages does Apple actually know? She's the most fluent in English having grown up in North America (I don't know if she's American or Canadian yet but probably Canadian since that's what I'm most familiar with), some Burmese, very little mandarin, and enough Japanese to show anyone she's a weeb /lh. I think her daily life gag would be that due to her poor understanding of Japanese she would often mistake similar sounding (or not so similar sounding) words for one another which leads to all sorts of misunderstandings and hijinks!

Let's talk about Reborn now (and the other arcobalenos in general)! Well I already said he's a polyglot... For Apple and Reborn I think they're primarily speaking English to one another but do randomly mix in or switch to the other languages they know. I think Reborn would actually speak better Burmese (and of course mandarin) than Apple which annoys her to no end. Apple girlie... Why are you letting this white man show you up? /lh I think in general when it comes to the Arcobaleno they're all speaking a mix of Italian and English to one another depending on their level of fluency but it's also just a mix of languages. I imagine them all sitting at a table together you're gonna just hear a lot of different languages being spoken back and forth. Reborn would speak to Fon in Mandarin, while immediately turning to Luce to address her in Italian. Switching to English when it's a group discussion but then switching to French to bicker with Verde. And then of course those who are also fluent in those languages would also contribute and all around! Many languages to be had here!

Now for the tenth gen!! So obviously Gokudera is fluent in Italian but I also like to think he's fluent in English (when he and Apple bicker it's mostly done in English lol). Mukuro I think is another one who is fluent in all three (English, Italian, Japanese). And honestly... Hibari being a rich boy I think he would definitely be fluent in multiple languages. I'm not sure which ones yet but I think if he wanted to learn he could pick it up pretty easily! Now, will he actually speak those languages to you? That's a whole other can of worms... Oh, and I think Lambo is also fluent in all three! (and as we know I-Pin only really knows Mandarin but gets better with her Japanese with time) For Tsuna, Yamamoto, Chrome, and Ryohei I think they're not fluent in either English or Italian (well chrome is learning Italian and is getting there thanks to the Kokuyo gangs influence). I definitely think once things calm down (so post-canon) Reborn starts to give them weekly Italian lessons (he makes Apple sit in on these too much to her displeasure "why am I learning with the kids this isn't fair I'm more fluent than them!... Maybe..."). And he also makes Apple give them English lessons! Though she's not the best teacher so... the results vary lol. Also, Gokudera, being fluent in both languages, doesn't need to be there but attends them anyway to support and help Tsuna. He's so respectful during Reborn's lessons meanwhile for Apple's he's always got something to say and nitpick at. The girls also attend these lessons at times (Haru is the most fluent in English out of them all but Kyoko's isn't bad either!) Apple also gives them separate lessons at times because she finds them more pleasant to be around /j

And then finally... Let's talk about the True Earthlings! Considering they're basically some form of ancient being that they would have their own language! I do think because they've been alive for so long though most Earthlings have picked up multiple other modern languages.

I would be super interested to know how you guys go about it! As in do you touch on it much or is everyone just sorta fluent in the same language? It's a really fascinating and fun topic to me!

“Hahi!?” A woman’s voice comes from the pink smog and a small cow child rushes into the smoke to cling onto the person at the center. “Haru! Are you okay?” Lambo didn’t intend for Haru to get hit with the 10 year bazooka but it just happened!

It wasn’t Lambo-san’s fault! Put the blame on someone else! Like--- ahodera! Yeah! You can just blame him! (Lambo’s go to scapegoat of choice)

“Hahi? This fluffy head… Lambo-chan?” Haru’s hand is waving away the smoke, quietly coughing the smoke out of her lungs. “Is Haru in the past?” The smoke clears and Haru is holding Lambo in her arms.

Looking around, she recognizes the location to be the Sawada household and she notices as a few familiar faces rush into the room.

"Such familiar faces, hello everyone. It seems that Haru will be in your care for 5 minutes, was it?" She chuckles, as she pats the top of Lambo's head gently. "Were you getting yourself into trouble again, Lambo-chan? You should be careful. I'm sure my younger self is quite confused right about now." She's honestly concerned about what her younger self was looking at right now. She was in Hayato's office tidying some things up so... there were a few photos there that would raise some questions.

Surely Gokudera would have that covered. There was no way her younger-self didn't make a loud entrance. "Ehhhh? Haru! Your ring, did you get married?" The small child is staring at the ring on her finger and the woman quickly retracts her hand and she spins the ring around so the others in the room can only see the silver band of the ring and not any specific distinguishing details of the ring.

She didn't want the others in the room to see the ring and make any connections. Changing the past would alter the future and that was something that sounded scary.

"Haru did get married, to someone who loves her very much. She's never been happier than when she married him."

"Who? Who is he? Lambo-san wants to know!" The child is shaking the woman with his excitement and Haru only giggles at his childish excitement. "She cant tell you that, it would be a spoiler." She looks at the others who were staring at her agape at the doorway of the room.

"Hm? Don't tell me, you thought I wasn't marriage material or something? That's rude to me, you know?" She puffs out a cheek in jest. No matter how old she is, she can still retain a bit of her playful nature, can't she?

Time should be up in a few- "It was good seeing everyone again. Bye everyone." The woman waves her hand and POOF!

"Ha-hahi... Shock-desu..." The young teen returned to her native timeline and she was in shock. Gokudera was really attractive for one, and she married someone that wasn't Tsuna-san??? What happened?

Universe-san? Answer Haru's questions!

“Mhm…” She hums a response at him repeating a part of what she said earlier. She gives him a look, and shrugs her shoulders as well. “If they’re relying on corruption the way they were to even stay relevant… well,” she lets the comment hang there. It goes to show just how little power they have. Powerful Yakuza clans may be corrupt, but they go about things differently than this clan did. Them meeting outside where Haru could witness their acts—you could say that they were wet behind the ears.

“As messy as anything can get if they hold a grudge, the Vongola is quite something when enraged.” She says meaningfully while knowing she didn’t have to tell him that of all people. “They probably memorized my face, so, guess I’m in trouble too.” She sighs and finishes off one of her scoops.

“I am sorry that you got dragged into it because you helped me.” It was ironic that he thought that he may have dragged them both into trouble whereas she thought it to be the opposite where she knew it was her that got them both into trouble. “I’ll be careful moving forward. The worst that can happen is that they’d try to scare me or hurt me.” She doubted they’d go much further than that. There seemed to be the common theme among the underworld that you didn’t touch the innocents, especially women and children. ‘Well, maybe I don’t fit the innocent category anymore.’ “In that case, they played the wrong card and will answer for that.”

“It’d be sure to get a few solid punches in first, though.” Another scoop finished.

Hum of agreement around the spoon. He can see… no, he can taste why. Although, despite the decent size scoops, there will probably be two of them next time if he doesn't get all the other flavors at once.

"Fair enough." Japan generally isn't nosy, he's told. It's true barely anyone wants to interact with him, but how much of It is genuine politeness? There are all kinds of other things under the surface of anyone's 'face', so to speak. It's hard to imagine otherwise with everything he's gone through while growing up here in Japan himself. None of it is his problem - people can think whatever they want - so much as it's a concern for her image… but at the same time, her image is not his problem either.

( “Hm… well, they’re on the radar right now, so if they don’t play their cards right starting now, they’ll be in for a rude awakening.” )

So bold of her. A little scary, even. Byakuran has one spoonful in his mouth for a brief pause. "Play their cards, huh?" He grins. Somehow, the way she said that sounded like he does when it comes to risks. "They're an official gang, Haru-chan. Even if they aren't that tough now, things could get messy if they hold a grudge." He shrugs and glances over. "I've already poked them, so who knows?"

It's entirely possible Byakuran might have pulled them both into trouble, now that he thinks about it. Sure, everything will be fine, but it's possible something could get serious. Hopefully not, but one never truly knows without being in the gang itself…

Did you know? They had made a promise a while back. Haru promised to let him know if she was interested in someone so that he could judge them for her. At the time, Haru had been avoiding everyone else under the premise that she was busy with her studies when she was really needing some space to organize her thoughts before she moved on from Tsuna. Lambo being Lambo, he’d gone to visit her despite the others telling him to be patient.

Lambo-san + Patience = impossible.

In Lambo-san’s defense, he was lonely! He liked playing with Haru! Can’t she just study with everyone else? You know, Haru likes to cry in secret a lot. Lambo has seen it before, so he could tell she’d been crying when he went to visit her. Lambo-san doesn’t like to see Haru cry, so they made a promise that she’d tell him if she liked someone… BUT she lied!

Just yesterday, he heard Haru talking to her friends, and they asked her about a person she liked. Well, clearly Haru forgot their promise, so he’s going to remind her! “Oi! Haru! You broke a promise!” Lambo runs up to her and takes hold of her hand, an old habit hard to break. “You promised to tell Lambo-san if you like someone. You can’t tell your friends and not Lambo-san.”

“Thank you. Rocco should ensure they behave, but if the kids act up, let me know.” Haru leaves, trusting Gokudera to watch over the kids until she returns. The kids were all in the living room. Some were reading books, some others were playing with toys or playing make believe. There was one child who was taking a nap in a pile of pillows. A wide array of personalities in these children.

The oldest, Rocco, is the first to notice Gokudera. “Uncle Grumpy.” The other kids stop what they were doing to pay attention to the guest. “Uncle Grumpy!” A little blond girl with wavy hair and blue eyes runs up to Gokudera, shaking a bunny plush doll at him, making it wave its arm at him as a greeting. “This is Luna’s new friend! I named her Usa-chan! Kaa-san made her for me!” The little girl was one of the children who had taken to referring to Haru as her mother while many of the other kids referred to Haru by name. “Usa-chan says hi!” She fully expects for Gokudera to play along and greet her bunny doll.

“Hey, why do they call him ‘Uncle’ Grumpy, anyways?” One of the kids, a pair of twins, looks at Gokudera’s hair. “He’s looks more like a ‘Gramps’ to me.” The other twin adds. The pair were reading books together on the couch when Gokudera walked in. The youngest of the bunch was 5 while the oldest was 12, just a few years younger than Lambo. “If he’s a Gramps, that makes Haru a Grandma, they’re the same age. She’ll get upset if you call her that.” Rocco comments. That silences the twins quickly.

Rocco walks up to the little girl Luna and brings her over to his side, to give Gokudera space. Once Luna started to cling onto someone, you’d be hard pressed to pry her off, so he pre-emptively acted to pull her away as to not burden their guest. “Visiting Haru again?” That was something the kids have secretly talked amongst themselves about—what was the relationship that the two adults had? Why was he visiting so often? They couldn’t ask because Haru was always nearby. She’s not within earshot so… “Haru says you’re friends, is that true, ‘Uncle’? Is that why you and the others visit all the time?”

He wasn't always good with affection and comfort as many in the underground knew him to be a rough and ruthless right hand. That was only when it came to enemies though and they gave him a good enough reason to be violent. He'd gotten in enough trouble for bullying Lambo growing up to know by now Haru would kill him if he frightened a kid.

He knew the prospect of raising a child in the Mafia was low, many were bound to their jobs strictly and often only the Boss needed to produce an heir of his own to begin with so Gokudera understood with Haru being so heavily affiliated to the Vongola, the dream of being a mother to her own child was slim to none, unless she dedicated herself to a civilian. It was sad to know she'd resigned to that sort of fate when he knew the potential she had to be a good mother had the circumstances been different. These orphans were, to put it mildly, the only kids he knew she'd ever have.

Gokudera would be on his best behavior, lest he face her wrath later. There were some things you just shouldn't tell kids in order to protect them, and these ones had been traumatized enough. Deep down he felt a little guilty to know that this was the closest Haru would ever get to a family of her own. Had circumstances been different, he'd have settled down with her right out of high school if he could have only gotten the nerve to tell her how he felt. Every time he tried before, I love you had come out, Aho-onna instead. Stationed in Italy with the other guardians, visits like this were his only chance to see her again. He was thankful he was the one The Tenth sent back and forth, she could have picked someone else like Hibari. He'd savor the time he had with her while he could. "Sure, take your time. I'll go talk to them."
