Randomly had the idea of, in the far, far flung future, Atlus releases like, Persona 17 or something, and I keep coming up with random absurd things about the game (and other things for this bizarre world where new Persona games never stop coming out)

P17's main color is light beige, they used up all the colorful colors by Persona 15

The main concept for P17's "other world" is based on some obscure, loose metaphor a psychologist used for the human subconscious one time, they had ran out of smart, semi-sensical metaphors by like, Persona 10

^ A friend of mine suggested that the "other world" be sandwich themed because a totally real psychologist compared the layers of mental instability to the layers of a sandwich (and to make the excuse that the main color represents the bread)

There are like 17 Social Stats to increase, they can only be ranked up like once or twice each, but doing it for all of them is tough, especially since you don't know which you'll need to unlock what

There are Social Links / Confidants for every tarot card arcana ever made, but they still needed more Social Links / Confidants, so Atlus had to start making up their own arcanas

P17 actually takes place over the course of 2-3 years, otherwise you wouldn't have enough time to complete all the content even at max efficiency

There are like 32 magic affinities / elements, and like 14 physical ones, each party member commonly specializes in 2-3 magic affinities / elements, as well as a different physical affinity / element

The mascot character is like, an aardvark or something, it has no relation to anything in the game and it's kinda obvious that Atlus is just running out of popular animals to make into mascots

We as a fandom are not ready for Fromsoft stories because there are people who claim that "Miquella's character was assassinated by bad writing because in the base game he was hyped up to be kind and compassionate", when his arc was a fall from grace. How falling from grace equals writing him to never have had that grace to begin with? We as a fandom are not ready for Fromsoft stories because whenever Fromsoft does not directly state something, fandom splits into two hostile groups each accusing another of media illiteracy or even various -isms and -phobias. (I advice you to ask Gehrman fans from Bloodborne fandom for extra insight on this one) We as a fandom are not ready for Fromsoft stories because when they DO state something directly, the "cool kids" of the fandom decide it was either a bad writing or that they know better, and start to side-eye everyone who prefers canon over their """improved""" fanon. We as a fandom are not ready for Fromsoft stories because Miyazaki's brand of moral ambiguity, admission that there is no clear solution to world's problems and questioning the nature of humanity itself OFTEN falls on the deaf ears.

Nd ask game 1, 2, 26!

Hello, beautiful creature, thank you as well for allowing me to scream about these games that I have been playing for 27 years. 1. Most controversial game you like I feel like I may have already answered this in a previous ask by mentioning that I think Danger on Deception Island is underrated, but also my favorite game, Secret of the Scarlet Hand, doesn't seem to have a lot of lovers. I feel like I hardly see it listed at the top of people's Tier rankings, and I can't say I understand why. At the same time, it's really hard to dictate why it's my favorite, because, and I cannot stress this enough, I don't think it's The Best Game. I think there are other games in the series that do a little bit of everything better - except, perhaps, the educational aspect of it. I can't think of another game in the series that cram-packs it with Actually Pretty Accurate information, especially for the time that the game was made. I am so completely taken with SSH - Music, characters, puzzles, environments, plot. I suppose I want to know what so many others think it is missing that it doesn't belong near the top of their tierlists.

2. Most controversial game you don’t like 

I recently played Tomb of the Lost Queen for the first time, and I gotta say - I cannot figure out why I see so much love and hype for it. I'm sorry, guys, it's just so goddamn unintuitive, the dialogue is all over the place, the progression of the plot, and how Nancy reacts to that progression, feels so awful. So many of the newer (see: after 2010) games really don't allow the player to logic out "what to do next," and Nancy really does just get dropped in a place and the player is kinda promised "there's a mystery here, believe us," and we're let loose with no rhyme or reason to poke around, or know HOW to poke around productively. Nancy acts like she has already met all of these characters-- but the PLAYER hasn't, making a really disorienting introduction to everyone, which is wild because so MANY other games establish that Nancy already knows one or more of the Suspects, but the player gets an introduction to them in a way that allows us to LEARN about them. It's not even the most beautiful graphically, though I remember the soundtrack being Nice. Soundtrack sure was Nice. I felt nothing for the entire game, though I can say that I'm glad that, in the end, the game tells us that No, we're not going to make our Woman of Color a believer in the fUCKING ANUNAKI. GOOD CALL HERINTERACTIVE ON THAT ONE. I thought the twist/reveal with that character was really interesting, I just wish that interest was matched by any OTHER part of the game. I don't get it.

The culprit's motive to find the treasure/macguffin is just kinda "because," and that's something I can totally respect if... the culprit is... genuinely super smart and would KNOW that, if they get caught at any point while doing this, the future they have worked so hard to secure is completely destroyed. I think it would have been more interesting (though would have changed the vibes of the game) if the culprit was banking in still being able to come back to the school, maybe becoming a professor at Waverly or visiting as an alumni, something that happens ALL THE TIME. She couldn't "search the building" unless the building was all empty, but? The game doesn't impress that the culprit is on any sort of timetable. Obviously, once she would graduate, that would remove a lot of access to the building, but... not necessarily, like I mentioned. At no point is the player told or shown that "oh, the culprit only has until graduation to get whatever she's looking for." Because, realistically, she has much more time than that. It's not like FIN where the building is going to be demolished. And she could have continued her search with an accomplice in a lower grade. There were so many options here!

Like I said, I love this game very much, but the motivations of the culprit felt really empty, which is a shame because "it's my hyperfixation" is a really FUNNY motive that the series has used before. I think this game could have benefited from a touch more work in the writer's room, that's all.

The thing is, it's not just about Mouthwashing. Like the game is very good but it gave me war flashbacks from a fic I read years ago.

There was that StarFox fic I read, that predated proper tagging on AO3 so I had genuinely no idea what I was getting into. Basically it started with both the StarFox crew and Wolf's crew getting stranded in a ship together and waiting for help, a bit like in Mouthwashing.

And just like in Mouthwashing there was a pretty vivid depiction of the guys losing their goddamn minds and getting hurt and starting to lack ressources, including oxygen.

Until everybody but one person died.

Ngl it traumatized my teen self. I ended up talking about it to my therapist years later because I legit spent dozens of minutes crying ugly tears after reading it. Esp since the last death was... genuinely horrible (a bit reminiscent of Daisuke's death).

When I watched Mouthwashing (thank fuck I didn't play it, I would've ended up even worse otherwise) I couldn't help but think about that fic again.

It... kinda helped me cope. I would never read that fic again no matter how good it was (like seriously if you love bad endings and good characterization of people losing their minds, it's perfect), but it helped me think about it with my head instead of my feelings.

So, what I mean is, Mouthwashing is good as is, but on top of that it helped me digest another piece of media, so double kudos.

Now the lady from fucking Cyberpunk Edgerunners Im so mad about I cant even describe. I've always been on the boat that guest characters would be weird and immersion breaking af but like this is such a wild character to throw in imo. Like genuinely who asked for or even wants this. That slot could've been given to a CERTAIN SOMEONE. I'm so mad why would they do it like this (revealing all of them at once) instead of revealing them one by one it really does ruin the hype around it. Why do two real actual beloved guilty gear characters have to share the limelight with characters no one currently gives a damn about. I guess they kind of saved me from immeasurable disappointment for when I'm watching the fourth reveal and it's goddamn Lucy from Cyberpunk Edgerunners instead of any character I remotely care about.

Here's the part where I truly get mad about video game DLC. I really did get my hopes up for Raven this season. I'm so mad. Like were gonna have to wait at least a year probably. I miss peepaw more than anything on planet earth like I'm really truly sad 😭😭😭I was coping so hard. I really hope they don't do season 5 like this and God Forbid they do another guest character. Parry.  Ascend.  Fireball.  Drop.

Scar watched as the young ghast hybrid fought, weaving between the arena constructs’ projectiles with impressive ease.  They were talented, that much was certain; they had quick reflexes, and their fireballs rarely missed.

Not that it made a difference to Scar.  He was only here for show, really.

His managers understood that by now.  Scar had dug his heels in for long enough that they’d eventually stopped bothering him about the sidekick issue.  And, as the unofficial face of the Hybrids and Heroes Headquarters - or 3H, as most people called it - Scar had some leeway to be stubborn in this case.

Being HotGuy did have its benefits on occasion.

“Time!” a voice called out over the loudspeaker, and Scar focused back on the arena just in time to see the construct power down.  The ghast hybrid stood, bruised but not defeated, an elated grin on their face.

As the evaluators asked a few more questions, Scar didn’t even bother trying to catch his manager’s eye to give the perfunctory shake of his head.  They dropped even that pretense more often than not these days.  Some other hero at 3H could take the ghast teen under their wing.  They’d make an excellent sidekick, Scar was sure, but HotGuy worked alone.

“Next!”

He glanced up briefly as a young man - probably in his twenties - stalked into the arena.  An avian, with the tan patterned wings of a hawk, a slight figure, and an untidy mop of sandy-brown hair.

“Name?”

“Is that necessary?” the avian asked sharply, his scowl visible from Scar’s seat up high in the bleachers.

“...no.  Proceed.”

Afterwards, Scar could never quite pinpoint what it was that made him sit up and pay attention.  It might have been that first refusal, startling in its audacity; it might have been something about the way every line of the young man’s figure was drawn taut like a bowstring, a do-or-die intensity to the concentration in his face.  It might have been the way he fought.

The arena whirred to life, and the young man became a whirlwind.  He dashed from point to point, a knife in each hand, slashing out at the constructs as he passed.  For the most part, he stayed within melee range, occasionally taking to the air with a small pistol in one hand.  He was lithe, and agile, and he fought furiously as though his life depended on it.

That was probably what surprised Scar so much.  It was well-known that 3H would help anyone, regardless of skill.  You didn’t need to apply to be a hero to be eligible for their aid.  The people who did apply were ambitious, eager, seizing at a chance for fame or for purpose.

But whenever Scar caught a glimpse of the avian’s face, there was a stark urgency about the set of his jaw; some grim determination showing in the ruthless efficiency of his movements.  To him, this was no game.

Scar was intrigued.  For the first time in ages, he leaned forward and watched the fight with interest.

By the time it was over, he knew one thing for certain.  He would never rest easy until he’d figured the avian out.  Until he’d learned what was behind those stern black eyes; where the man had learned to move so gracefully; what drove him to fight like the goddamn Application Trial was the most important thing he’d ever do.

“That one,” Scar found himself saying to his manager the moment time was called.  “I want that one.”

I enter the cyberpunk 2077 tag. I see a post about the game not being 'punk' because of all the triple A gaming company typical shit 'means it's not punk'. I roll my eyes so hard I exit the tag.

Points, context, rebuttal, whatever beloooow (I am not reblogging post because I don't want to attract hate to OP, but I am writing this cause I'm sick of seeing it).

Yeah triple A dev treatment fucking sucks. It sucks CDPR vowed to do different and didn't but that is missing a bunch of context. Here comes the context -

I've been following CDPR since about 2010-ish. They've always held onto older era gaming attitudes and respect their consumers. I guess in a way they were still made for an older era around the Cyberpunk release for the following reasons.

They shot themselves in the foot with their own marketing. Hiring a big name may have done that. If you look at the teaser trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 on announcement it basically says release date wise 'its done when it's done'. Being part of that older era they want to put out a COMPLETE game. Well tested. They came from a time where game updates were a LUXURY and that's why I trusted them to release a good product.

Marketing however got so big that it exited the realm of core fans and into the general public (derogatory). When they announced another delay, I was chill. I trusted them. Shit takes time man, whatever it takes to make it good AND treat your employees well bro. General public however was out for blood, sending death threats, pulling preorders.

There's this fine line you have to tread in marketing. Too little hype, no one knows about your product. Too much hype, you skyrocket expectations. Hype at the wrong time - you end up peaking at the wrong moment and end up losing momentum for release. You can see the conundrum here. They were arguably in the skyrocketed expectations and the losing momentum risk region.

So they did crunch time for release. In a way they had to. I mean sure they could have been 'punk' like OP suggested and said fuck you to the non-core fanbase but unfortunately punk doesn't pay bills. It doesn't keep the lights on. It doesn't keep your employees employed. It doesn't stop them from getting sent death threats for a delay.

So they rushed it out, it bombed. That sucked BUT it brought them peace. Because while everyone was making fun of them and quickly forgetting about it to go laugh at the next bomb of the month - it meant they could actually get onto fixing/finishing their game because people like ME knew them. It wouldn't be left as is. Also let them work at a less insane pace.

I started playing it (I finally had a PC that could handle it) right before the Edgerunners release and the public reboot. It was a fucking. Solid. Game. I studied game design and if I didn't get sick and had to stop this game would have been my goddamn final paper. There are so many good choices narratively and mechanically to the point you can't separate the two. It was everything I expected.

They worked hard to get there. We currently live in an era where entertainment is treated like fast food and people can be fucking incoherent when they're told to have patience. Why do you think so many games release in a scuffed state? Why do you think this new 'redemption arc' story in the game industry has become increasingly common? Because Devs keep getting sent DEATH THREATS just for doing work. That's fucking insane. No wonder they're working overtime and sleeping at the office because the general public has turned gamedev into an industry that basically uses psychological torture as a whip to get your game out 'on time'.

Yes there are absolutely horrible triple A gamedev companies, usually under the stable of a larger company (EA, Activision etc. take your pick) but CDPR ain't that. In my eyes their hand was forced.

You know what is punk? Going with a little, 'unpopular' (basically not DnD) ttrpg written by a black man and building a new IP and experience from it - AND having him on board and getting his active input during development. Because dear lord current media in general seems to be allergic to taking risks and new IPs.

You know what else is punk? Releasing free DLC updates that would be a micro transaction otherwise (no I am not talking about Phantom Liberty and I argue that's an 'expansion' though I guess no one uses that word now) and putting the goddamn pdf of the ttrpg handbook they based it off with the game download. Putting stickers in physical releases (going by my witcher experience), giving you goddamn HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGES of in game posters to print for yourself FOR. FREE. No one DOES THAT anymore.

Also arguably putting out Cyberpunk is punk just in the narrative it tells in the goddamn first place - especially in the current climate, but I think I've made my point here.

Also my last point, in big letters because it's driving me fucking insane:

CYBERPUNK. IS. A. GENRE. A GENRE. THEY DID NOT INVENT CYBERPUNK. BLADE RUNNER. NEUROMANCER. ALTERED CARBON. IT'S A GENRE. THE PUNK ELEMENT IS IN THE NARRATIVE. IT'S NOT SOME KIND OF 'STATEMENT' ABOUT THEMSELVES, IT'S A GENRE AND ALSO THE LITERAL TITLE OF THE TTRPG THE THING WAS BASED OFF IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Anyway I'm sick of seeing CDPR being thrown under the bus and being treated in ways that will actively end up affecting future development. I really, really hope they haven't been too affected but if they end up feeling forced into modern day gamedev cycles and all the bullshit that goes with it ... well I know why.

I just wanted to stop and write about how happy I am that Pikmin is finally popular. People are playing the games, not just Pikmin 4, but Pikmin 1, 2, and 3. People are talking about it, drawing art of it, making OCs and headcanons and AUs...It's beautiful.

Ever since I was a little kid I wanted Pikmin to be popular, I always got strange looks when I said it was one of my favorite games because nobody knew what it was. I remember religiously rewatching Chuggaaconroy's pikmin 1 and 2 let's plays, memorizing every joke and freakout moment.

I remember the hype I felt when Pikmin 3 was announced, when Chuggaa finally played it some years after the fact. Even then, with a new Pikmin game out on Nintendo's new console, it still didn't have mainstream appeal.

Hope that Pikmin 4 would ever come out started fading as the months turned to years which turned into a decade. And now, a decade later after getting into Pikmin and hyperfixating on it as a kid...It's popular. So many other people are experiencing the world of Pikmin, the Pikmin themselves, the strange creatures that populate PNF-404, Olimar and Louie...

It's just so goddamn cathartic. I'm so happy to see one of my favorite underground franchises finally burst out of the ground and into the sunlight.

god. let's talk about that for a sec hey. recently it came to my attn that one of my Hilson fics has achieved some margin of popularity on Spanish-speaking fandom TikTok, which is hilarious and weird and amazing. i scroll thru the comments. lo and behold there is some mention of the fact that i also wrote platypus fanfic. would you believe me when i say i forget about it until someone (or some song) brings it to my attn?

im totally one of those bitches who will be like "haha...wow i was going thru something...twas forever ago,, i was a different person back then..." bruh this was within the last year. lol. more on religious trauma that nobody asked for + why i went full platypus mode for a second down below.

picture this: you're at the stage of development where you're becoming aware of sexual feelings. the same stage of development, funnily enough, where we're said to develop self-concept, enhance our critical thinking skills, and begin to get into drama because we're starting to understand our own place in the world, for better or for worse: puberty.

so you're in this place. you're having these thoughts and feelings. you're an undiagnosed autist whose special interests are a bit too childish (and too intense) for your peers to understand, and all the while your sexual development is underway, and then BAM: you are slapped in the face with abstinence-only education that not only demonizes sex but frames it as a form of reverence that one sex is supposed to offer the other as a form of submission (after signing paperwork that was originally conceived as a form of ownership).

HAHA. my psychosexual development was doomed from the start, whether by nature or nurture, and i've made peace + pride with that. HOWEVER. last summer i entered one of several recurring periods of really grappling with religious trauma, trying to find my place in a world where i still can't imagine a godless reality but am shedding the one(s) i used to believe in, + just generally having a Bad Time. who got me through that period of my life when i really started to understand that innate things about me were seen as perversions of nature by my supposed church family? Perry the goddamn platypus. silent, deadly, misunderstood, gentle unless faced with the Horrors. he lives a double life and he lives it well. he's at peace with it as much as he can be: he is docile and dumb and huggable at home, and he's vicious and cunning and suave at work, and neither of these things are lies, they're just two sides of who he is.

funnily enough my other longtime fandom, TMNT (across several iterations/reboots), can also be seen as a closet narrative. i saw these characters struggling with the two sides of their lives, two worlds, each of which only understood part of them, and i kind of directed my whole self into those stories because i couldn't really stand to be an active participant in my own at that time in my life.

so i returned to that stage last summer. i embraced that confused kid who just tried to contort their sexuality and their energy to fit a fucked-up paradigm and i just worked through all these big feelings that i was trying to shove in a box the last time i was obsessed with Perry the platypus. and you know what? it's good to know that no matter how old i get, he's still there. lol. there are still such things as simple comforts, touchstones to the shit that got me through. it wasn't the healthiest time. i lived in a daydream, but by god i lived.

lived to write really weird sex fanfictions about a 2D sentient platypus. fuck yeah. peace and love on planet earth.

Right I’m still working on that deluxe Mario movie post but I’ve seen no one talk about this frame yet and it’s been on my mind for the past few days so I thought I’d talk about it because why not.

It’s a banger moment fr, the soundtrack fucked and the animation was nutworthy (just like how the rest of the animation was nutworthy).

But these expressions are so telling, Luigi looking determined as all hell after his divorce with his babygirl turtle. You’re doing great sweetie I’m so proud of you.

But Mario’s face left me fucking SHOOK. Like goddamn, this might be the rawest expression I’ve ever seen this character make, this is some Mario Strikers Charged shit right here folks (if anyone who has seen this post hasn’t played that game I fucking IMPLORE you to try and find it wherever you are, it’s genuinely one of my favourite Mario games and the soundtrack is just sjsjjsjdsj). THIS MAN IS READY TO CATCH A BODY FOR HIS BROTHER AND I AM HERE FOR IT MORE FERAL MARIO IN THE SEQUELS PLEASE.

actually now that you've finished AM and re: Paired Endings, did you get the paired endings you wanted? I remember when I went in blind and didn't know how the hidden support points system worked in regards to paired endings, I ended up with exactly no paired endings I was expecting or hoping to get, and a few people I knew playing the game at the same time as me ran into the same "wait, how does this work" conundrum bc we all went and got everyone to A or A+ supports with everyone else and therefore had a roulette wheel of paired endings.

also just in general, how did you enjoy AM?

I barely knew paired endings were a thing so I wasn't aiming for any one in particular (although I'm upset by the Felix/Ingrid one. I'm sorry Ingrid, you deserved better).

That said, having paired endings almost hidden from the player if you don't know (I'm guessing it's a selection of the A/A+ support pairs, but if you have multiple it selects one based on which has the highest support points) is... really weird. Why not just have S supports at that point and give the player the active choice of which paired ending they want?

As for Azure Moon itself, I quite enjoyed it! Dimitri's journey is the good shit, his relationship with Edelgard is just tragic and overall it's a really nice personal narrative.

But for the larger narrative, well... I have questions. And they are not the good kind.

Let's start with the smaller things first - Sothis.

Why is she even in the game?

I'm saying this as a huge fan of her- I adore her, I think she's so much fun. That said, if she's barely going to have screentime in White Clouds and is completely absent in Part 2, why even pretend she's going to be a primary character if she barely features in it?

I enjoyed Ch9 and 10 with her because she finally had her time to shine, taking initiative, coaxing Byleth into investigating a bit more and being a little gremlin when she convinces them to eavesdrop on Rhea. She finally has the presence she should have always had, but then she merges with Byleth and... that's it.

Poor Rhea is in an even worse situation in Azure Moon, being completely absent in Part 2. They tell you she has been secretly been imprisoned in Enbarr all this time but they never tell you why (my guess is it has something to do with Edelgard's monster form?), and then when you beat the game... Nothing.

Just a small line telling you she has retired and moved to Zanado.

The poor woman feels like a complete afterthought in this route.

Speaking of things feeling like an afterthought in Azure Moon, the Dark Snakes (the personal name I'm going with for Those who slither in the dark because I hate that name so goddamn much).

In White Clouds? Hyped up as a major antagonist.

In Azure Moon Part 2? Nowhere to be seen properly.

You only get Cornelia and Volkhard who have been very blatantly replaced with members of the cult, and yet no one seems to notice.

Dimitri will say straight to your face Cordelia's whole demeanor changed around a decade prior but never think "hmm, this sounds familiar", despite him mentioning Kronya a few chapters prior.

They appear in the final chapter but only as an extra boss you can stomp to get rid of a bunch of soldiers, and again - barely acknowledged. The rest of them flee when you kill their leader so the Snakes are still around scheming, but this is never addressed in Azure Moon, not even in the endings.

And I am not accepting "it will be explained in the other routes" as an excuse, because if you're going to treat every route as its own game, then the narrative of every single route has to stand on its own.

As it stands, the Snakes in AM only exist to make Edelgard look better by comparison in White Clouds and are almost completely ignored in Part 2.

And speaking of Edelgard - we need to talk about the whole deal with Fòdlan's unification.

This game is... weirdly fascinated with the idea. I can understand why Edelgard views it as an ideal - of course the future Emperor of an Empire would have an imperialist mindset.

The problem is that several other characters and the narrative itself portrays it a good thing, when if you think of it for a few minutes... It's not. The mere existence of the Kingdom and Alliance as well as two of the major wars in Fòdlan being for their indipendence proves that.

And look - Fòdlan has many, many problems. Rampant racism and xenophobia, class inequality exacerbated by Crests, you name it. But it being united under a single banner, especially if by force, does nothing to solve any of the issues and arguably makes them worse.

Hell, as fucked as the status quo at the start of the game is, at least there was a clear harmony between the four powers, and Fòdlan had been at a state of relative peace for almost a millennia until Edie did her, um, thing.

Shamir has a line where she mentions Fòdlan will probably split again eventually, and she's right - it's increasingly clear that Fòdlan being governed by a single power does not work.

Also I know I barely know Claude at this point especially because he's deliberately written as hard to read but I'm sorry- him just giving the Alliance to Dimitri is bullshit. Both because of what it represents, both because I don't buy it at all he would just do this (especially with Verdant Wind existing), and especially because you really want me to believe every single noble would be ok with rejoining under the Kingdom they declared indipendence from two centuries ago?

So the narrative ends up saying "oh it's not that Edie's ideals of a unified Fòdlan are fundamentally wrong- no, it's her methods and the fact that she wants to destroy the Church". And the cynical side me is thinking that in the large scale of things, the main difference between the routes is choosing which war criminal gets to govern the whole continent.

So while overall I enjoyed Azure Moon, I can't help but notice so many warning signs for things to come.
