FUNNY BUSINESS
pairing. tyler owens x booneïżœïżœs sister!reader
summary. boone was a laid-back guy who only really had one, long-standing rule: his sister was off-limits to the wranglers. But tyler had a bad habit of rule-breaking.
warnings. a curse or two, fem!reader, mentions of drinking/being drunk (not reader), suggestive jokes, bed-sharing.
word count. 4k || masterlist
âYouâre the worst, you know that?â Dani said, her arms crossed over her chest as she leaned against the side of the rig alongside Tyler and Boone. She and Tyler had their sights set on you as you concentrated on the options of the vending machine, oblivious to their attention.Â
Boone furrowed his brows, having just been focused on the camera in his hands. âWho?âÂ
âYou,â Dani answered. âYou brought your hot sister all of the way out here to help us, and then tell us sheâs off-limits. Itâs cruel and unusual punishment, if âya ask me.âÂ
A laugh bubbled up from Tylerâs throat, earning him a glare from Boone. âItâs not my fault none of you assholes can keep it in your pants.âÂ
It was Tylerâs turn to glare, playfully. âIâm a gentleman, Boone. Is it a crime to get to know her, you know, considering sheâs a part of the team now?âÂ
With a sigh, Boone shook his head. âJust no funny business.âÂ
Tyler mock saluted. âScouts honor.âÂ
Tyler was a gentleman; his momma had raised him as such. And despite his teasing, he did want to respect Booneâs words. But at the same time, you were the newest member of the Wranglers, and Tyler did want to get to know you since youâd be hanging around for at least that season.Â
Boone had suggested to bring you on to help with the charity aspect of their storm-chasing. The t-shirt and other sales they made from their online audience went mostly to help victims of the storms they chased, and the rest went back into making the merchandise to sell. Boone said youâd be a good addition to help out with the business side of things, and heâd been right from what Tyler had seen so far. You were smart and quick, and were able to keep up with the rest of Wranglers as if youâd been a part of the team since the start. Tyler was impressed.Â
But what really impressed him, was how caring you were. It was the first time youâd come along with them to help out a neighborhood that was hit hard by a tornado. Houses were leveled and the devastation was thick in the air from the moment they arrived.Â
The Wrangler quickly got to work. Lily and Dexter started making sandwiches. Dani started walking around and passing out water bottles. Boone helped the injured to the ambulances that arrived. Tyler started making rounds, helping families find their missing pets or important objects in the rubble. But as he did so, he couldnât help but watch you interact with the victims as well.Â
A couple of kids from the neighborhood sat together in a clear patch of grass while their parents tried to salvage some of their belongings and figure out what to do next. They all looked teary-eyed, and faces pulled in frowns as they sat quietly, clutching stuffed animals or picking at the wet grass to distract themselves. You approached them, sitting down in the little circle they formed.Â
Tyler couldnât hear what you were saying to them, but your started to look more and more animated and the kids cracked small smiles. After a couple more moments, the kidsâ moods looked to shift into something lighter despite the devastation around them. The somber air slowly became filled with giggles and kidsâ voices overlapping excitedly.Â
Tyler found himself smiling softly at the sight before he ventured over. âHowâs it going over here?â he asked, earning your attention.Â
âDavid here is telling us a very interesting story about a space alien,â you said, earning an enthusiastic nod from one of the younger boys in the circle. âYou guys keep telling stories and Iâm gonna go make sure no one else needs help, okay?âÂ
The kids all shared a series of âokaysâ and âthank yousâ before you moved to stand up. Tyler outstretched his hand toward you, and you took it with a smile, letting him help you to your feet. Once you stood directly in front of him, he felt himself clam up slightly. He and Dani had made jokes in hopes of irritating Boone in regards to how attractive you were, but seeing you that close, in the after-storm sunlight, Tylerâs breath hitched in his throat.Â
âThanks,â you said, dropping your hand back at your side and gazing around at what else there was to be done in the neighborhood.Â
He cleared his throat. âThat was smart, keepinâ their minds off ofâŠâ he vaguely gestured around them, feeling a knot in his gut of pity for the poor families affected.Â
You smiled sadly. âMy parents used to do that with Boone and I. When weâd have to wait in the cellar, weâd all tell stories until the storm passed. The more outrageous the better,â you explained.Â
âIt seemed to work,â Tyler said, glancing at the circle of kids all sharing outrageous stories with laughter and smiles instead of the frowns they held a couple minutes ago.Â
âYeah, at least a little bit,â you said. There was a beat where Tyler didnât know what else to say. Something over his shoulder caught your eye before you looked back to him and said, âIâm gonna go help Boone.â You sidestepped Tyler and left him in a slight daze.Â
He whispered a string of curses under his breath once he was out of earshot of the kids, and hurried back to the camper where the Wranglers were handing out food.Â
âIâve got a problem,â he muttered to his friends.Â
Lily handed out another sandwich before eyeing him oddly. âA problem-problem or a you-problem?âÂ
âA me-problem.âÂ
âAh,â she said. âShoot, cowboy.âÂ
âItâs Booneâs sister,â he whispered, ensuring that only Lily, Dexter, and Dani heard him. âSheâsâŠâ
âAttractive? Yeah, I thought we already established that?â Dani said, opening another case of water.Â
Tyler rubbed his forehead, an odd feeling twisting around inside his stomach. âItâs not just that,â he said. âSheâs pretty, sure, but-âÂ
Lily cut him off with slightly wide eyes. âOh no,â she said.Â
Dexter furrowed his brows. âOh no? Oh no, what?âÂ
âTyler only, and I mean only, calls women âprettyâ when he has a crush on them. Some oleâ woman at a bar thatâs makinâ eyes at him, heâll call her âattractiveâ or âeasy on the eyesâ never âpretty.â Pretty he saves for the ones heâs got a big fat school-boy crush on. And normally thatâs all fine and dandy, but this is Booneâs sister weâre talking about, Tyler.âÂ
He hated how well Lily knew him. She read him like a book.Â
Dexter whistled lowly. âThatâs unfortunate.âÂ
âWhatâs unfortunate?â Boone said, approaching the group with you beside him. All of the Wranglers, aside from you two, looked at Tyler, which was anything but helpful.Â
Boone was one of Tylerâs best friends, and he knew it was the right thing to listen to him. Besides, Tyler hadnât known you long so maybe his âschool-boy crush,â as Lily had put it, would fade once he got used to having you around.Â
Clearing his throat, Tyler shook his head. âNothinâ important,â he said. âLetâs pass the rest of this food out before we head out for the night.âÂ
You adored your brotherâs friends more than you thought you would. Youâd watch the Wranglersâ livestreams, but it was different being around them in person. Their passion for storm chasing was admirable and how they helped those affected by the very storms they were in awe of was amazing.Â
When Boone asked you to help out, you jumped at the opportunity. You certainly didnât regret your decision, but you greatly underestimated the charm of Tyler Owens. Youâd read the comments online, all ogling at the storm chaser, but it wasnât just his looks that made him incredibly attractive. Tylerâs charm entered everything he did and said, but it was especially enticing when he talked about storms. When he got particularly excited, he spoke with his hands, lips pulled in a grin that was ridiculously mesmerizing. You could have listened to him talk about the weather forever, which was a problem.Â
It felt foolish on your part; not only was Tyler one of your brotherâs best friends, but you thought he was miles out of your league. He had people practically drooling over him in the comments of his videos and making eyes the second he stepped into a building. He was a personality, wild and loud, but with a sweet side to make him even more likable. You told yourself the little crush would pass, but you worried that if Tyler kept being so damn nice to you, itâd be years before that happened.Â
âSo, this is how storm chasers spend their off time?â you said, propping your elbows up on the bar before something sticky touched your skin. You recoiled in a grimace.Â
A chuckle sounded from Tyler as he handed you a napkin. âHere,â he said. âAnd yeah, itâs the perfect way to unwind. Though, word of caution, donât drink too much. Storm chasing hung-over is a different kind of hell.âÂ
You wiped someoneâs spilled drink from your elbows and nodded. âNoted.â There was still a lot you had to learn about the ins and outs of storm chasing, but you were excited to learn. A silence passed between you two, the space filled with the bar chatter. The place was busy for it being in the middle of nowhere; the Wranglers said it was because most people were either dedicated locals or fellow storm chasers looking to relax a little.Â
Your brother and the rest of the team were at the old-timey jukebox, picking out songs that they then danced to, loud and rowdy as ever. But Tyler didnât join them. Instead, he sat at the bar nursing a beer. Before you arrived, he was talking to an old man on the other side of him, cracking jokes like heâd known the stranger for years.Â
It was like each minute you were there with them, you uncovered something else about Tyler. And maybe it was a couple of sips of alcohol that were already affecting your system but felt like he should know that.Â
âYou know, youâre a little different than I thought youâd be,â you admitted.Â
He studied for a moment with a gaze that made you nervous, but not in a bad way. âOh yeah? Howâd you think I was gonna be?âÂ
You shrugged. âI watch the lives, mostly to make sure Boone is okay, but online you seemedâŠâ You werenât sure of what the right word to use was. You settled on, âMore intense, I guess.âÂ
A smirk crept across his lips. âAnd I am not intense enough for âya?âÂ
Your face felt hot, and the busy bar wasnât helping. You adverted your eyes down to your drink and tried to laugh off your fluster. âI just mean, I thought youâd be like all of the time. I was worried I wouldnât be able to keep up and youâd all think I wasnât a good fit.âÂ
The smirk fell from Tylerâs face and was replaced with a furrow of his brows. âAre you crazy?â he said. âWe needed someone like you on our team. I know you just started, but I think youâre the best fit we couldâve picked.âÂ
âCareful,â you teased. âToo many compliments like that might go to my head.â Even though you were pretty sure he was just trying to make you feel better, there was something in his tone that was convincing.Â
âWhat are yâall doinâ?â Booneâs voice filled your ears and suddenly his arm was slung around both your and Tylerâs shoulders, forcing you two to lean in a little bit closer to one another, but with Boone sandwiched in the middle. Your brotherâs breath smelled like beer and there was that goofy smile on his face he always got when he had one too many. âThe partyâs on the dance floor!âÂ
You glanced over at the âdance floorâ which was a little space the Wranglers had carved out in front of the jukebox. A couple others joined them, but it wasnât anything too wild.Â
Tyler shook his head and finished his beer. âYour ass is gonna be sorry tomorrow, Boone. I told you weâre leaving bright and early.âÂ
Boone patted Tylerâs cheek. âIâll be just fine.âÂ
Boone was not âjust fineâ the next morning. What he was a pain in Tylerâs ass, which resulted in him being demoted to the backseat and you prompted to the passenger seat. Maybe that wasnât the best move for Tyler because while he was driving, he found himself slightly distracted by you.Â
You sat with your attention fixed out the window, watching the plains roll by with admiration. Every so often you fiddled with the radio per Lilyâs request, but other than that you were quiet, observing.Â
âCan we take a pit stop?â Boone moaned. Tyler glanced at in the rearview mirror, face paled and eyes squeezed shut.Â
Tyler sighed. âI swear, if you throw up in my truck, BooneâŠâ Tyler muttered, straining his eyes down the road for any sign of a gas station, but there didnât look to be anything close.Â
âThereâs not another stop for half an hour tops,â you said, searching on your phone.Â
âGreat, cool, yeah,â Boone said. âThen you may wanna pull over or else everyoneâs about to have a real bad time in here.âÂ
Tyler quickly pulled off to the side of the road and Boone scrambled out, across the road to empty his stomach.Â
âI donât know how many times Iâve got to tell him,â Tyler sighed.Â
âHe wonât listen,â Lily said, unbuckling and sticking her face between you and Tyler. âIâll make sure heâs all right. You two keep an eye on the weather.â She hopped out, leaving you and Tyler alone.Â
He drummed his fingers against the steering wheel, wracking his brain for something to say to you. Normally he had no issue talking to people, but he found himself second-guessing his words when it came to you. But you beat him to the punch.Â
âHeâs never been too good at holding his alcohol,â you said. âI canât tell you how many times I had to pick him up because he got sick at some friendâs bonfire back in high school. I donât think Iâve ever seen someone get hangovers so badly.âÂ
âAll a part of his charm, I guess,â Tyler joked. âDoes it run in the family?âÂ
You shook your head. âNo, neither charm nor hangovers. Booneâs one of a kind, thatâs for sure.âÂ
Tyler steadied himself a little, finding that thread of confidence in the back of his mind. He gazed at you, taking in the pretty features of your face. âI think youâre wrong on the charming bit.âÂ
You looked surprised, eyes a little wider. âMe? Charming?â You scoffed. âNo way.âÂ
âCharming, smart, prettyâŠâ Tyler trailed off, waiting for a reaction from you to let him know if he had swung and missed. You looked down, averting your eyes and clearing your throat. Out the windshield, he saw two figures moving in his peripheral vision and before you got the chance to say anything back, Boone and Lily reentered the car.Â
âThatâs my bad, you guys,â Boone said.Â
You turned your head over your shoulder to look at your brother. âFeel better?âÂ
âOh, yeah. Ready to chase this son of a bitch!â And you all were off again. Tyler wished Boone and Lily had held out for one more minute. He wanted some kind of response from you, even if it was one telling him he had no chance. It was like an itch he couldnât scratch, and one he felt bad about having, but he couldnât help it. You were something new, a little unknown, and unpredictable. If there was one thing Tyler was good at, it was chasing through his apprehension. But instead of a tornado, you had quickly become the storm occupying his mind.Â
You knocked for the fifth time on Booneâs door and tried calling him again, but one thing about your brother was that he was one of the heaviest sleepers of anyone youâve ever met. That paired with his hangover from the night prior left him not answering you. You cursed under your breath, ready to set up camp in one of the rickety pool lounge chairs.Â
There was an unpleasant pair of cockroaches in your motel room and the thought of sleeping with them scurrying about was out of the question. Since none of the other Wranglers had left their rooms, you wondered if you were the only one to notice them or the only one who had them. Whatever the case was, you couldnât sleep in your room and apparently, you couldnât sleep in Booneâs either because he was fast asleep. You couldnât remember where Dani and Lily's rooms were to ask to bunk them.Â
It seemed like you were out of luck until the door next to Booneâs opened and a groggy Tyler stepped out. âWhatâs goinâ on?â he yawned, rubbing the tiredness from his eyes.Â
You hugged your arms closer to your body. âSorry, did I wake you up?âÂ
âSorta,â he answered and you felt immediately guilty. âBut itâs all right. I just wanted to make sure everything was okay out here. Whatâre you doinâ up anyway? Itâs the middle of the night.âÂ
âThere are cockroaches in my room,â you sighed. âI was trying to see if I could crash with Boone, but he sleeps like the dead.âÂ
Tyler chuckled. âThat he does.â There was a beat and silent contemplation. You were about to tell him youâd crash in the camper or the truck, but he nodded his head back toward his room. âCome on,â he said.Â
You stood, confused for a moment. âYou can crash with me. I donât think my room has cockroaches but for both our peace of mind, I wouldnât look around too hard.âÂ
You weren't sure if you were elated or embarrassed. Overall, you were tired, exhausted even, and any thought of declining fled your mind the second Tyler turned to walk back inside, assuming you were following. So, you did.Â
Tyler patted the edge of the bed. âItâs all yours,â he said, gathering one of the pillows in his arms.Â
âWhatâre you doing?âÂ
He tossed the pillow onto the floor. âPraying for no cockroaches for the next couple of hours.âÂ
âNo, wait,â you rushed out. âYou canât sleep on the floor.âÂ
âItâs all good-â he started, but you cut him off.Â
âNo way. Iâm not kicking you out of your bed in your room.â You glanced at the bed, feeling your face grow hot at the thought of what you were about to suggest, but you couldnât let him spend the night on the floor. âWe can justâŠshare.âÂ
Tyler stared at you for a moment, like he didnât know what to say. He shifted his gaze between the pillow on the floor and the bed before landing back on you. âAre you sure? Because I really donât mind.âÂ
âIâm sure.âÂ
Hesitantly, you sat on the edge of the bed and pulled off your shoes, trying to ignore the shift of weight on the mattress as sat down opposite of you. It wasnât as big of a deal as your mind was trying to tell you it was. It was just two co-workers, borderline friends, sharing a bed so no one had to face any cockroaches. That was all it was. But even in the darkness of the motel room, you couldnât help the quick beat of your heart as you crawled under the covers, with your back facing Tyler. He did the same and before you could convince yourself what you were doing was not a big deal at all, Tylerâs soft snores filled the room. It was oddly reassuring. You fell asleep not long after him, a clear space between you but something in the air that wanted to draw you two closer.Â
For a moment, when he woke up, Tyler thought the exchange he had with you in the middle of the night had been a dream. But when he rolled over to find your sleeping face inches away from his, he realized it was very much real. Your eyes were softly closed and your lips slightly parted as you slept. He found himself admiring you for just a moment, until there was a loud knock on his door, forcing him to get up.Â
He threw it open without thinking much about it. Boone greeted him with a slightly worried expression pulled on his face. âHey, man whatâs-âÂ
âHave you seen my sister? She called me last night a bunch of times, but I didnât hear it. And when I went to her room no one answered,â Boone said, quickly cutting Tyler off.Â
âBoone?â Your voice sounded from behind Tyler and as soon as he saw the several emotions flicker across Booneâs face, he realized he may have made a mistake.Â
Booneâs gaze flickered between you sleepily sitting up in Tylerâs bed and Tyler. âDude!â he exclaimed. âWhat the hell is going on here?âÂ
It must have registered with you too how the situation looked. You hurried out of bed and stood at Tylerâs side. âWait, hold on-âÂ
âWhat the hell are you doing?â he said to you. âI said no funny business,â he then said to Tyler.Â
âItâs not like that,â Tyler rushed out. âI know that it looks like that, but itâs not. I swear.âÂ
âHeâs right,â you added. âItâs not. I needed a place to crash because there were bugs in my room, and you wouldnât answer your phone. Tyler offered to let me stay in his. Thatâs all.âÂ
Boone didnât look too convinced. He crossed his arms over his chest, blowing air from his cheeks. âYou two have been making googly eyes at each other since you arrived,â Boone said. Both you and Tyler tried to defend yourself, even if Tyler hadnât been super subtle about his âgooglyâ eyes. But Boone cut you both off with a wave of his hand. âSave it. I know both of you. You,â he pointed to Tyler. âAre the least subtle person I know. And you,â he pointed at you. âHave been talking about him since I started chasing with him.âÂ
Your eyes widened almost comically as you sputtered over your response. âI-I have not!âÂ
âLook,â Boone started, taking a deep breath. âYouâre both adults. But if youâre gonna get into any funny business, for the love of the Lord himself, do not do it around me. Got it?âÂ
âOkay,â you answered, catching Tyler off guard. He expected you to brush your brother off and force Tyler to face the reality that you had no interest in him, but you didnât.Â
Boone looked to him for his answer. âY-Yeah.âÂ
âGood,â Boone said. âWeâre leavinâ in fifteen.â He turned on his heel and left the two of you in the doorway. Once he was out of earshot, a laugh sounded from your lips, a sweet sound he wasnât expecting.Â
âGod, that was embarrassing,â you said, still laughing at the situation.Â
Tyler couldnât help but laugh too, closing the door and leaving the two of you alone in his motel room once more. âIs that true? You talk about me?âÂ
You hung your head, sheepishly and shrugged. âMaybe.â The idea of you talking about him made him feel on top of the world. âIs what he said about you true? Are you really not that subtle?âÂ
âI did invite you to sleep with me,â he joked, taking a step closer to you. You didnât move away but instead closed the distance between you two even more. He searched your eyes for a sign that you were thinking the same thing he was, and when your gaze flickered to his lips for only a second, he got his confirmation.Â
Tyler hooked a finger under your chin, tilting your head upwards just slightly as he leaned in. He kissed you slowly, sweetly as you hung your arms around his shoulders to bring him in even closer, the two of you pressed chest to chest. He felt you smile against his lips, a blissful feeling he didnât to end.

this isn't much of a plot or anything but i cannot stop thinking about storm par crowding into a small diner somewhere after a long day and reader falling asleep on scott's shoulder
Tired | Scott x Reader
A/N: Jealous Scott! Kinda short, please leave more requests!
The diner was cute, quaint and filled with locals who stared at Storm Par as they filed into the establishment. You were behind Scott and in front of Javi, barely able to focus on keeping your feet in front of you.
Your group split in two, most Storm Par members filing into a six person booth, leaving you, Scott, and Javi a four person booth. Not really thinking, you sat next to Scott, too tired to abide by your usual nervousness around him. Javi sat across from the two of you.
âAre you okay?â You barely registered that Scott was talking to you.
âWhat? Oh, yeah, Iâm just really tired.â
âWhat the hell did you do last night?â Javi laughed.
Well, in fact, what you had done last night was smoke a bong with Boone, get violently too high, and throw your guts up for two hours as soon as you got back to your motel room. You bit your lip.
Javi had been half joking, but your silence raised both menâs suspicions. âOh my god,â Javi chuckled. âWhat did you do?â
âWould you kill me if I said I was maybe smoking with the enemy?â
Javi cackled. âWhich one of them?â
âBoone.â
You didnât notice Scott stiffen beside you.
âMakes sense,â Javi smirked. âDude screams stoner.â
âYeah,â you groaned. âHe had good shit. Too good. I got sick, didnât sleep much.â
âHe got you sick?â Again, you missed Scottâs tight, angry tone. Javi didnât, raising a brow at his partner.
âIt wasnât his fault,â you defended Boone. âHe loaded the bowl with keef and Iâve only smoked my pen for the last three months.â
Scott didnât smoke, so he didnât really understand, but Javi did, nodding. âYeah, thatâll do it.â
The waitress interrupted. âWhat can I get you guys?â
Scott ordered first, then you, who ordered nothing but a coffee, and finally Javi. Scott tried to circle back to your night with Boone but you shrugged him off, yawning.
You were quiet as he eventually fell into conversation with Javi. Everytime you blinked, your eyes remained closed a little longer each time. Scott and Javiâs low voices lulled you to sleep. You stopped understanding what they were talking about, eyelids drooping, head hanging to your side. You fell asleep over your coffee.
Right onto Scottâs shoulder.
Heâd been mid-sentence when he felt weight on his shoulder, immediately pausing his statement. He glanced over to see your head, resting on his shoulder as you breathed shallowly.
Javi chuckled. âYou were so worried about Boone, but look whoâs shoulder she fell asleep on.â
Scott didnât blush, but if he did he would have. âWhatever,â he grumbled. He slouched in his seat to lower his shoulder, making you more comfortable. You sighed and nuzzled into him. Javi smirked at the look on Scottâs face. âShut up,â Scott snapped, but even he couldnât help the small smile that tugged at his lips.

hcs: going on a chase (twisters)
ft. boone gabi, javi, kate, lily, scott, and tyler (addy was barely in the movie but let me know if y'all want me to write about her too - i'm totally down! just not sure if anyone is interested)
content warning for tornadoes, imminent danger
divider credit to saradika!
boone
boone is probably the most fun person to go on a chase with! he definitely has a lot of fun with what he's doing and likes to try new things, he'll always keep you entertained.
he's very energetic, so he might get a little overexcited and tease you if you get nervous during it
but, if you genuinely are in danger or terrified of the chase, he'll stop teasing and make sure that you're doing okay. his personality can come off as a bit much sometimes, but it's so clear that he cares
boone for sure gets a look in his eyes during a chase - no matter how many times he's gone on one, he's still in awe of it
also, if it's your first time going on a chase with him, he's going to go all out to impress you
and i mean all out
he's going to make sure that there are rockets and fireworks, he's going to sing and blast music, and he's going to act incredibly confident even if he feels a little bit nervous (most of his nerves are coming from the fact that he wants to impress you)
even with how overzealous he gets, you're still going to be a top priority for him. if you somehow get hurt, he's going to do everything in his power to make sure that you recover
maybe, a bit too much! he'll try to keep you out of chases for a little while over a scratch, but when you finally convince him that you're fine, he'll praise how strong and independent you are
after chases, too, if there are any people to help in a wrecked town he's going to be the one that tries to make the people smile. in turn, your spirits are going to be lifted quite a bit from sticking by his side
gabi
the first thing about gabi going on a chase is that she's for sure going to give you her hat for 'good luck'. in theory, she could buy you a hat (and probably has) but she thinks that it's better luck for you and for the case if you're wearing her hat
every time, she's going to take a moment to make sure that she places her hat atop your head and adjusts it to make sure that it's not covering your eyes
she's also somewhat protective. even though she's been around the bush with chasing, and she knows that the team is doing everything in their power to keep things as safe as possible, things can go wrong. she'll blame herself if anything happens to you, so she makes sure to do her best to keep you safe.
that can include something as simple as putting her arm in front of you, to buckling you into your harness yourself. or, it can be something like her refusing to let you go in a car without her because she's not comfortable with you being out of her sight
if you are, for whatever reason, in a different vehicle during a chase, she's going to make sure that you're safe the moment that you're away from the action.
she also hypes you up! if you make a prediction about something, she's going to make sure that everyone listens and that she supports you!
if you make a mistake, she'll comfort you and let you know that everyone on the team has done so. she's made mistakes, even tyler has made mistakes. gabi will ensure that, no matter what, you know that you did nothing wrong.
if you're right, well nobody will ever hear the end of it. she's going to make sure that you get to speak again, that everyone thanks you, even if strangers know that it was you who predicted something, she's gonna tell them too. she'll make you feel like the smartest person in the world.
she's also so sweet when helping towns and victims of tornadoes recover. somehow, around as sweet as she is with you.
if you get injured, she'll quite literally nurse you back to health. she'll insist you go to the hospital for anything worse than a bruise, but she might be even a bit more concerned for your health than you are.
bonus, she'll tease you if you hold her hand during it but secretly she very much enjoys it.
javi
having previously lost three close friends to tornado chasing, javi is often worried about you. however, his perspective is a bit different than the others.
he stayed back to collect data when he lost his friends, and that arguably saved his life. but, he also remembers how terrifying not knowing was, and he doesn't want you to feel that. so, he agrees but makes sure that you stay with him so neither of you feel that anxiety.
going on chases with javi, he makes sure that his vehicle is equipped with anything he may need to keep you safe. whether that be investing more on more secure seatbelts, making sure that the glass is as reinforced as possible, or simply keeping an eye on you.
there is always a somewhat distracting air about how he feels after a chase if it effects other people, because it's clear that he wants to do more and feels like he can't. you often end up trying to comfort him after a chase, especially because you know that he already lives with a lot of guilt.
if you get hurt, there are some issues beyond his worry that comes along with it.
scott doesn't think it's that big a deal, and gets especially upset if it gets in the way of data collection. but javi will do everything in his power to not lose any more people that he loves. he'll take any amount of heat if it means making sure that you're safe - he'd ultimately rather put his funding in danger if it means that he doesn't lose you.
when things go well, and he doesn't need any comfort, you always feel like the ending of the chases are the best part. his wide smile, his bright eyes, the way that he looks at you if indescribable, but it makes your heart feel so warm
kate
there are two versions of chase kate - pre-losing her friends kate is a totally different person to chase with. for this, i'll be focusing on post-trauma kate.
kate is protective to a fault. she really doesn't even want you going on a chase, even though you insist that you're going to be okay. ultimately, you understand why she's so apprehensive and let her find peace with the idea herself. she needs to be the one to invite you on a chase, and she ends up coming around to the idea of it after a while of contemplation.
kate will make sure that you know exactly how to stay safe. what to do if the car flips, what to do if the tornado is stronger than expected, what to do in the event of you not being able to see through the rain, or hail, or any other event that could take you by surprise.
she's incredibly thorough, but you understand why. she doesn't want to lose anyone else because of these things.
seeing her in her element is absolutely beautiful, though. you always knew that she had a gift, but you had never been able to see it up close and personal. finally being able to see it, to see the awestruck look in her eyes, makes you wish that you could go on a million chases with her.
seeing her smile afterwards, knowing that she's made a difference in some way and that you're both safe, is also a beautiful experience. her smile is like sunshine and rainbows to you, especially after witnessing a tornado first-hand.
kate being able to go on chases with you is therapeutic for her too, after she gets past the initial fear. but, if you do get hurt in some way, she's going to be incredibly worried for you. though you understood the risks, as she did, she also can't help but think back. it'll take some convincing to let you back with her on a chase, but she ultimately does end up feeling more comfortable with you close to her during a storm than away from her.
lily
like boone, lily can be a little eccentric at times. she says things that can make you laugh even during the worst situations, and she always sticks her neck out to make sure that you're safe
granted, she might be more nervous than anyone else to go on a chase with you. the first time you ask her to take you on a chase, she's going to be apprehensive. i doubt she'll even be the deciding factor, it will probably be boone or gabi who convinces her that you're going to be okay.
seeing her during chases is always fun, though. hearing her crack little jokes that make nobody but you laugh, watching her in her element, speaking so expertly about the weather, is something that makes your heart feel warm.
she's going to keep you close, too. even though she won't insist that you ride with her, she prefers it when you do. she likes to keep an eye on you, sure, but she also just loves having you physically close.
holding your hand, wrapping an arm around you, letting you rest your head on her shoulder until you see the tornado and after you're out of harms way. she likes having you close to begin with, but it gives her a bit more confidence than she otherwise would have.
also, having you on camera holding her hand when she can naturally be a little awkward in front of the camera? it relaxes her, even though you're both still on the edge of your seat because of the work that you're doing.
lily does tend to be protective - naturally - but she's a little more shy about it so she doesn't always express it. she doesn't want you to feel overwhelmed, so you often reassure her that you don't mind if she's a little protective.
in the event of you getting hurt, she'll do everything she can to make sure that you get to a medical professional and that you're tended to in the meantime. though, i think she enjoys patching you up herself sometimes.
scott
this man will tell you straight to your face that he doesn't care if you get hurt if you ask him about it, and honestly, he probably believes that he's telling the truth.
he's going to spend most of the time worried about the numbers, worried about money and absolutely nothing else. he doesn't even seem awfully invested in the weather or storms, so much as he is in the dollar signs associated with them.
when you go on a chase with him, you don't often enjoy it at first because he can come off as so emotionless and because he really doesn't seem all that bothered by the idea of you not making it back.
things change when something actually does go wrong. if a storm is stronger than usual, he's going to be a little bit on edge. he's worried about himself, sure, but he's making sure every other second that you're not hurt and that you're alive. for someone who doesn't care, he certainly comes across like he does.
if you end up injured, he's going to insist that you never go on a chase again, and will only change his mind after you've recovered. but, after that, chases are different because not only do you know that he cares if you're hurt, but he also has found out that he cares if you're hurt.
he'll become almost overbearing with how protective he is after that, but you won't be able to be upset about it. after so long of him acting like he doesn't care at all, it's nice to have concrete proof that he'd be upset if something happened to you.
he also insists that you ride with him. he doesn't trust anyone else to keep you safe after the incident, even if it happened when he was around. he isn't going to let anyone put your life in harm's way, so he insists that you're with him at all times.
tyler
tyler is so fun to go on chases with!
he seems incredibly calm about it, even though you know for a fact that he's still just as scared of tornadoes as he was the first time that he ever saw one.
if it's your first chase, he's going to feel responsible for showing you the ropes and making sure that you know what your doing. meaning: he may as well have a binder of information that he's going to present to you.
it can be hard to forget that he's so educated with how he acts sometimes, but that fun persona is barely there when he's teaching you everything about 'chase safety' and 'what's in the truck' and 'what not to touch' and 'when to get out of the vehicle' and literally everything under the sun. some of these things are just common sense, but he's touching all his bases.
when he knows that you know what you're doing, he brings you along but makes sure that his predictions are a baby tornado. something so small that he knows you're not going to be at risk.
when he eventually lets you level up to bigger tornadoes, you get to see more of his personality. he also, like boone, likes to go all out to impress you. he totally makes sure to stock up on rockets, fireworks, flares, anything that he can really think of so he can impress you and make you smile.
but that's another fun thing about him on chases, he absolutely loves making you smile. he'll say the most out of pocket stuff out of no where just because it makes you laugh.
if you get hurt, he's absolutely petrified and will volunteer to patch up your wounds even if your injury is something as small as you twisting an ankle on the way out of the truck or your knee smacking into the glove box.

This is just a post talking about how much I adore Kate Carter and Tyler Owens and didnât things Iâve noticed in my (several) rewatches of this show. Enjoy my many ramblings. <3
Thereâs something so special to me about how Tyler and Kate had little to no physical contact through the movie. Like you can tell that theyâve learned to care about each other throughout the one week they knew each other (possibly an extra week if Kate had taken extra time off to heal from driving into an EF5 tornado) and they never even hugged or anything. Most of their interactions were through playful banter, the looks of absolute entrancement, and like two, maybe three scenes where he was comforting/helping her after tornadoes. Aside from those small moments, nothing. I think it really helps double down on the fact that this is a relationship that is built more on knowing each other rather then a physical relationship.
During the airport scene when Kate tells Tyler âif you feel it, chase itâ after he talks about not knowing when sheâs coming back, it almost seems like (to me, and Iâm bad at interpreting things) sheâs acknowledging that they both have some sort of connection. But the fact the he takes this advice!! He drills his truck into the ground!!! To run after her! Taking her own advice that she took from him!!!!! They make me crazy honestly.
Also thinking about a scenario where later on if/when Kate ever comes back and goes tornado chasing with the Wranglers again and during a scene where they just tamed another tornado their all like cheering and being excited over it, Tyler picks Kate up by the waist and spins her around like the scene from Frozen where Kristof spins Anna around. Bonus points if this is where theyâre still in the âwill they wonât theyâ stage of their relationship and owns them jabs and immense teasing from the rest of the wranglers⊠honestly wheres my fic?
Break from Tyler and Kate to talk about the wranglers. I need a whole movie focused on them. I want backstories, mire of the dynamics, seeing how they interact with each other. They are my current favorite found family. The scene after they all find Kate after the El Reno tornado and they run up to her, you can see Dani hug and wrap around Javi in the excitement, and Boone telling Kate heâs in love with her (real), they are just so important to me I need everything about them.
Okay, I think Iâm done for now

Cathy has a WhatsApp group with the Tornado Wranglers, sans Kate and Tyler, dedicated to gossiping about Kate and Tyler and plotting how to get them together/married.
Like early on after Kate's joined the Wranglers and they're all visiting the Carter Farm, Cathy assigns Kate and Tyler to wash the dishes after dinner or something, and then pulls all the Wranglers into another room where she pulls out a white board that's worthy of a conspiracy theorist (but really it's more like a 3D Pinterest Board dedicated to plotting Kate and Tyler's first date and onward...up until their wedding)
Cathy: "So have we made any progress?"
Javy: "There've been some baby steps."
Cathy: "BABY steps...?!"
Dexter: "The looks they've been sharing lately have been very promising!"
Boone: "Yes, very lingering, more and more heated - "
Lily: " - It's getting much more awkward for the rest of us to be around them. So, that's good, right?"
Dani: "I'm telling you, Ms. Carter, they are just THIS side of sickening. It's going well!"
Cathy: "Well, it has to go better than well! I have the hall booked for this time next year, I have my wedding dress tailored and hemmed to Kate's measurements, and I got my engagement ring that Kate's father gave me cleaned and polished and all ready for Tyler to give to Kate when he finally does pop the question! You guys need to be doing more! We need PROGRESS, people...!"

Tornado Wranglers headcanons!
Every member of the Tornado Wranglers has gotten a tattoo done by Lily before, most of them drunkenly
Tyler and Boone have known each other since they were in highschool :) they werenât extremely close until a few years later, but they would sit together at lunch
Boone has a pet snake! Its name is Jaeger
Dexter doesnât go chasing quite as often as the rest of them because of his ageâ he has a bad back, and also likes to spend time at home with his wife
Dexter has four children, all of which are grown up and live out of state. Theyâve all met the rest of the Wranglers at least once, though
Lily and Dani are dating and live together
Boone dropped out of highschool his senior year, but he doesnât like to talk about it so no one (except Tyler) really knows why
Dexter used to do work as a volunteer firefighter when he was younger. His longtime career ended up being as a university professor later on
Dexterâs wife loves to cook for the Wranglers and have them over at their houseâ theyâre around the same age as her and Dexterâs children, so itâs nice to have them around now that the kids are all moved out
Dani loves animals! When theyâre not on a chase, she likes to volunteer at the local shelter, or foster cats and dogs
Lily and Dani share clothes a lot, especially when theyâre on the road
Iâve seen this mentioned in plenty of fics, so itâs hardly my ideaâ but I wholeheartedly agree that Tylerâs accent comes out more when heâs drunk
Boone is the type to keep clothes until theyâre literally falling apartâ the majority of his wardrobe is 10+ years old, and very well worn
The group drinks together a lot, but Dexter rarely joins inâ he likes to keep a clear head in case something bad happens, so he can take care of everyone
Coming back to Booneâs snake, Dexter absolutely refuses to go to Booneâs house because heâs terrified of snakes
Lily loves to draw! Sheâs the one who designed the ânot my first tornadeoâ shirtsâ it was meant as a joke, but Tyler loved them
Boone sleeps very little, and even less when theyâre on the road. He gets nightmares often, so he likes to stay up as late as possible, only going to sleep when absolutely necessary.
The others are aware of this, and do their best to help him out wherever necessary
Tyler loves his truck so much, as soon as it gets damaged he finds a way to repair it
(Canon) Boone loves sweet things, especially chocolate! Tyler doesnât like him eating in the truck though, because heâs messy
Lily often forgets to eat and drink when theyâre traveling, leading to her getting exhausted and dehydrated. To combat this, Tyler makes a point of stopping and sitting down as a group to have three solid meals a day, even if theyâre picnicking in the middle of nowhere
Boone likes to give everyone nicknamesâ T, Dex, Dans, and Lee
Tyler and Ben keep in contact after Ben goes home! They become close online friends, with Ben frequently tuning in to the streams. Later on, he makes a habit of visiting Arkansas to see the Wranglers at least once a year!
Boone is very affectionate with all of the wranglers, giving them hugs and even kisses all the time
Dani plays the guitar really well. She doesnât bring one with her when they travel, but if she can get her hands on one, she likes to play and sing for her friends around the fire
Lily and Dani are short for Lillian and Daniela ^_^
If theyâre ever traveling for a long time, like over a month, Tyler will have Dani cut his hair for him
Lily has a big family, and keeps in touch with all of her siblings. She calls them often to make sure theyâre alright during storms, and most of the Wranglers know them well by now
Boone has a hard time reading, but he loves to listen to audiobooks while theyâre on long drives! His favorite are sci-fi stories books like The Martian and Dune
Tyler loves to dance. He can sometimes convince the crew to go out line dancing with him, but most of them usually have to be at least a little bit tipsy to even consider it
Lily and Boone are best friends; they have very similar personalities and can easily match each others energy
The tattoo that Boone was referring to in that deleted scene where heâs talking to Ben is a tramp stamp that says âgiddy-up cowboyâ
Tyler loves to cook! At home he has a grill where he makes brisket and ribs to share with everyone ^_^
Thatâs all :P

Killed The Cowboy
The crew wanted to know about Tyler rodeo days and this was one of his favorite stories to tell from those days
Everybody wanna know where did all the cowboys go?
Musta been the whiskey, maybe it was all the Marlboros
But it ain't none of that, that laid 'em all low
Yeah, believe me I know
It was the bar, and she walked in boots, jeans, and a t-shirt. Her hair was curled, and Tyler saw her walk in to the bar, he was nursing whiskey, he had in front him of him. Tyler couldnât take his eyes off of her, he watched her lean against bar before there eyes met
It was that midnight stare
Look in her eyes like a knife to the heart
She walked over to him and sat down âSo what a cowboy like doing here?â She questioned him âDeciding what to do next.â He said looking at her âWhatâs that?â She asked resting against her hand âCanât bull ride anymore, Iâm think college.â He shrugged, âWhat happened?â She questioned him âGot my head stomped a few to many times.â He laughed, âI think college is a great idea.â She smiled at him, they sat and talked about stuff, they left the bar and went to Tylerâs truck he pushed her up against it and they started kissing
It was that poison kiss
Cherry red lips, oh my God, leaning up against the bar
And I know it wasn't the smoke, it wasn't the drink
And I've got the proof
If you wanna know what killed the cowboy
A girl like you (a girl like you)
âLetâs get out of here.â She whispered in his ear, they got into Tylerâs and he drove. Until they got to little house, they walked and weâre back on each other again, they moved towards Tylerâs bedroom kissing and clothes getting taken off, as they went down the hall. Tyler and her both fought for the top until she was on top riding him
Mm, the way she does it wasn't just another rodeo
Lipstick kiss on the mirror, that was all she wrote
Yeah, it's supposed to be me riding away
But I'm dying in a bed that she made
The next morning when Tyler woke up she was gone. He was in a mess of sheets, he walked into the his bathroom and saw a lipstick kiss, he smiled at it and thought back to the night before, he thought the guy was supposed to ride away, or at least thatâs what he thought cowboys were supposed to do, he didnât think the girl would ride away. Thatâs what killed the Cowboy in him kinda, itâs why he went to college, got a degree in meteorology, and then he found out who her parents are years laterâŠ
Well, she's off in the sunset, she's out on the run
Bet she's halfway to Jackson by now
And I'm heartbroke to hell and I'm drowning the well
While I'm telling the bartender how
Tyler finished his story leaving out the intimate details of that night âSo that why you went to college?â Kate questioned âDid you ever meet her again?â Javi questioned âNope, have no idea where she is.â Tyler said âSo thatâs what killed the cowboy?â Dani questioned him âYep, it wasnât the smoke or the drink.â He said laughing âIt was girl like her.â
It was that midnight stare
Look in her eyes like a knife to the heart
And it was that poison kiss
Cherry red lips, oh my God, leaning up against the bar
And I know it wasn't the smoke, it wasn't the drink
And I've got the proof
If you wanna know what killed the cowboy
A girl like you (a girl like you)

get ya thinkin' (that you need me)
Fandom: Twisters Rating: T Word Count: 6028
Summary: Kate, Javi, Tyler, Lily, Dexter, Dani, and Booneâthey're all one crew now, and they need funding. Trying to look more responsible on a grant application, they come up with an unconventional solution: two of them should get married. But which two? Javi and Tyler prompt Kate to consider what her friendships could become.
âI know it was me,â Tyler prefaces. âI know Iâm the one who said our crew didnât need PhDs, butâŠâ
âBut it might be nice to have one right about now?â Lily guesses.
Thereâs a collective sigh as they all stare at the screen together. Javi, controlling the touchpad, scrolls down and back up again, like the words might have changed, like this grant application isnât punishingly particular and hopelessly intimidating.
âIf we type it up in the wrong font it gets rejected?â Lily checks, jabbing a finger at the line she picks out of the blur.
Boone shifts and turns to Kate. âYouâre doing your PhD, right? How soon you gonna be done?â
Kate gives him a look that asks if heâs shitting her. âNot by next Monday, which is when this applicationâs due.â
âFuck,â Javi groans, rubbing his forehead.
âWell, hey, you gotta be good at this kinda thing, Storm Par,â Tyler reasons. âYour old crew had money cominâ out its eyeballs.â
âThat was from investors. Highly unethical investors,â he clarifies, with a glance at Kate, who frowns sympathetically. âPrivate money. We never held a government grant.â
âWe need more time,â Kate declares, like just saying that could possibly extend the deadline.
She shoves herself up and away from the motel bed theyâre all gathered on the end of. If any of them were responsible adults, theyâd be able to admit that they donât need the deadline to be later, they need to have started working on this sooner. A lot sooner. The trouble is, theyâre the furthest thing possible from responsibleâat least, not in any way a government grant application would define the term (and, Jesus, does this application ever love defining termsâDefinition of Terms is a whole section of the instructions, right at the top). Theyâre storm-chasers, risk-takers, and no, no one has yet seen fit to bestow upon them large amounts of money to fund their research, so itâs tough to prove theyâre a safe bet, a good call, a fast horse.
âThe only aspect we may be able to exploit,â Dexter pipes up, âis format.â
âItâs all online, I thought,â Dani says, seated beside him.
âMost of it is, but⊠could you scroll back up?â he requests of Javi. âRight⊠there. In the research proposal section, thereâs an option for delivery method.â
âThirty minutes or itâs free?â Boone quips.
Lily rolls her eyes at him.
âNo,â Kate says, pacing. âNo, it means we might have a better chance if we submit an audio recording of us explaining our research, maybe Javi talking through the data to make the significance really clear. Or we make a slideshow, or film a video.â She pauses to smile. âYou guys would be great at that. The point isââ
âThe point is,â Tyler picks up, meeting her eyes, âwe could convince them on our own terms. No PhD necessary.â
âThough weâd still have to seem stable,â Kate stresses. Everyone nods back at her. âProfessional.â
âWho says weâre not professional?â Javi demands.
âDo I need to bring up the pants thing?â
ââŠNo.â
âEverybody in this room knows their shit,â Tyler says.
âRight,â Dani says slowly, âbut you canât say we arenât⊠slightly erratic. Not that itâs a bad thing, for what we do. But Kate did say âstable.ââ
âTo be clear,â Kate says, âIâm not telling anybody to quit driving like a total jackass, or making up catchphrases that promote reckless behaviourââ
âOr shooting fireworks into a tornado,â Javi contributes.
âThese non-criticisms feel oddly specific,â Tyler says tightly.
âOur rosterâs not even stable,â Lily points out. She folds her legs on top of the bland coverlet and the mattressâs springs shriek. âKateâs only been part of the crew a couple days longer than Javi, and that hasnât been very long.â
âThat is a valid point,â Dexter says.
Kate sighs. âIt is. So, Iâm asking honestly,â she finishes. âWhat can we do, by next Monday, to convince some government committeeââshe slaps the back of one hand into the palm of the other as she lists criteriaââwe are sane, we are stable, we are going to go the distance with this research?â
Into the silence that follows, Javi says, âWe could get married.â
Thereâs another second of absolute quiet before Tyler asks, âWas that an open proposal, or is there a happy couple you had in mind?â
What Kate thinks theyâve probably all been enjoying about the new (or just newly expanded) crew is the lack of awkwardness. Javiâs Storm Par crew was rife with it. While having zero members with a PhD is sometimes a challenge, Kate saw how too many PhDs could be even worse; there was a hierarchy amongst those guys, and if anyone dared offer a suggestion, the rest of them would throw sidelong glances at one another. Kate figured a few of them could straight-up go to hell (particularly Scott), but she still doesnât know how Javi stood it.
But even that awkwardness was clearly power-based. Javiâs suggestion is different, more personal, and definitely more awkward.
The vibe in the motel room is immediately screwed up. Some people look like they want to laugh, others are frowning in contemplation, and Javiâs just blushing, not looking anyone in the eye. Still, because heâs Javi, he doesnât chicken out. He tries to make his case.
âYou guys heard of Jo Harding?â
âFuck yeah, Iâve heard of Jo Harding,â Dani announces. âWho in the tornado game hasnât?â
âWell, sheâs an Oklahoma girl, so I was just checking.â Javi shrugs. âHer husband was her partner when she chased.â
âYeah, but she had a whole crew,â Boone says.
âYeah, but she also had a husband.â
âStop mansplaining Jo Harding,â Lily complains, flinging herself backwards on the bed.
âItâs not like having a husband made her a good scientist, or a good storm-chaser,â Dani says.
âIâm not saying that!â Javi protests.
âYeah, dude, Joâs husband isnât the most interesting thing about her,â Boone adds.
âI canât believe weâve now spent more time talking about Jo Hardingâs husband than Jo Harding,â Lily groans.
âThey won the grant!â Javi bursts out. âThey won the fucking grant!â
Tyler, whoâs mostly just been observing the crew with amusement up to this point, looks at Javi and cocks an eyebrow. âThis grant?â
âYes! This grant! Iâm just trying to say theyâre a powerful team. Formidable. Iâve read, like, every article ever done on themââ
âWoah, woah, woah. You have? Thatâs intense.â
Kate glances at Tyler and explains, âHe had a crush.â
âSounds more like an obsession.â
âI admired their work,â Javi says defensively.
âOh, is that what you were admiring in that one article where you cut across the text and just kept the photo of Jo?â Kate checks, smirking.
âWhat have I done to you, Kate? Goddamn.â
âFinish your point,â she prompts.
Javi sighs and braces his hands behind him, leaning back carefully so the laptop doesnât slide from his lap.
âThey always talk about how they make each other better. Not that the other person is why theyâre good at their job in the first place,â he clarifies, shooting glances at Lily, Boone, and Dani, âbut that they look out for each other, stop each other from making stupid decisions, keep each other safe. And yeah, a crew can do that too. A good crew. But a married couple just sells devotion and, and conviction in a different way. All Iâm saying is itâs something to try.â
âItâs not an unreasonable proposition,â Dexter allows when itâs clear that Javiâs done. Dexterâs calm, steady voice giving the idea his tentative approval strengthens its merit for everyone in the room. Kate can see it. She exhales.
âAlright,â she says. âWell, we donât have a lot of time to mull this over before the deadline, but letâs give Javiâs suggestion some thought. And any other ideas you guys come up with. Maybe reconvene on this tomorrow?â
There are nods and murmurs of approval.
The room theyâre in is Lily and Daniâs, so the crewmembers not hanging around to chill file out onto the sidewalk that lines the motel. Kateâs just thinking about going back to her own roomâwell, hers and Javiâs, with matching twin beds in baby-blue coverlets that make her think of the Shining twinsïżœïżœïżœand getting some sleep. They chased yesterday, then stayed up late last night going over the data. Theyâve all been eating at weird hours, and now with the stress of the grant application⊠Kate runs a hand over her face. She can hear Javi and Tyler talking behind her, but she doesnât think anything of it until sheâs unlocked the motel room door and Tyler follows her and Javi inside.
âWe need to talk,â Tyler states the second the doorâs closed.
ââWe could get married,ââ Kate quotes. (Sarcastically, but yeah, sheâs beat.) ââWe need to talk.â Youâre both so dramatic today.â
âThatâs what we need to talk about,â Tyler says, ignoring her sarcasm.
âWhat?â
âGetting married.â
Kate gives him a slow blink.
âWe just did,â she says. âThatâs what that conversation was.â She points in the direction of the other motel room.
âBut we need to decide,â Javi says.
âWe will. Everyone needs some time to think.â
âNo, they donât,â Tyler says.
âUh, yes, they do. If theyâd either thought it was the best solution or a total flop, they wouldâve said right after Javi explained.â
âI know our crew better than you do, Sapulpaâjust a fact. Trust me, they had an opinion.â
âThen how come nobody said anything?â Kate asks skeptically.
âBecause it isnât about them,â Javi says.
âWhat? Of course it is! The grant is for the team. We can put it towards a new drone for Lily and get Boone some moreââ
âNot the grant. The marriage.â
âThe marriage would be for the grant.â Kate has a bad feeling that sheâs started talking to Javi like heâs an idiot, but sheâs seriously just not getting it. Why isnât he just saying what he means? Sheâs tired.
Tyler laughs. He laughs! She stares at him.
âCome on,â he says, âyou have to know why they all clammed up.â
Kate looks to Javi. Javi, the guy she basically ghosted until he showed up at her workplace to drag her back here. Javi, whoâs still her best friend, no matter what. Javi, who she really needs to make sense right now.
âThey didnât ask any questions,â Javi says gently.
âMost importantly,â Tyler cuts in, ânobody asked who this hypothetical marriage would be between. You catch that?â
âThatâs just because we need to decide whether or not weâre doing it first,â Kate says, crossing her arms.
âYou really think thatâs why? And not that itâs because of the way Storm Par here looks at you, or the fact that heâs the one who suggested getting hitched? Itâs not just a grant application, Kate. There are other stakes here.â
Kate flushes lightly, and when she chances a look at Javi, he is too. Tylerâs not exactly wrong, but he isnât quite right either; she and Javi go back a long way. They care about one anotherâwhich is natural, especially after what they survived. Kate would also be lying if she tried to tell Tyler she hasnât noticed those looks of Javiâs, that sheâs blind to the way his steady brown eyes linger on her when she speaks, find her when sheâs still, working out the math for their next planned chase. She doesnât hate it, that way he has of looking at her.
Javi temporarily saves her from responding. Once heâs made his point, sheâs not entirely grateful.
"Me?" he says to Tyler. âThose guys arenât keeping their opinions to themselves because of some obvious claim I was staking on Kate. Iâm subtle.â
The remark is so pointed that itâs no wonder Tyler reacts to it, even as Kate has a private, silent panic.
âI never staked a claim on Kate,â Tyler assures him.
âSure you did,â Javi argues. âYou stayed at her house. You met her mom. You basically poached her from Storm Par.â
âI didnât need to poach her. She came willingly. And I bet youâve stayed at her house and met her mom! Youâve known each other, what? Forever? That about right?â
âWell, what about you two?â Kate interrupts, gesturing between the men. âOld rivals, new allies. Some unresolved tension from chasing the same storms, maybe? How do you know the crew werenât picturing you at the altar?â
While this seems to genuinely bewilder Javi, Tyler hitches his jeans and shrugs. âWouldnât be my first rodeo.â
âI just donât think anybodyâs thinking anything.â
âThey might not all be thinking the same thing,â Tyler allows her, âbut theyâre all thinkinâ something. The two people getting married to give us a shot at this grant are standing in this room right now. I guarantee it.â
The three of them eye each other.
âIf thereâs going to be a marriage,â Javi says.
âOh, there is,â Tyler says. âYou made too good a case for it. Whole lotta money on the line. Seems too logical not to try.â
âNothing about this is logical,â Kate decides, and goes to brush her teeth in the tiny bathroom.
When she comes back out, Tylerâs gone. She cedes the bathroom to Javi so he can get ready for bed too. They exchange a look as he passes her, but she waves him on, pats his shoulder as he passes. They can talk when heâs ready. Well, maybe not ready, but ready for bed. She goes to her squeaky twin and sits down to wait.
âItâs insane,â Kate says a little later.
Theyâre lying down, facing each other across the divide between their narrow beds. Thereâs an old movie playing on the perhaps equally old TV that sits against the opposite wall; theyâve turned the sound way down. The screenâs glow provides the only light. Kate thumps her pillow for emphasis rather than elaborating. She just doesnât have anything smart left to say on this topic.
âItâs also not,â Javi counters. Heâs run out of more sophisticated arguments too.
âSo, two of us are really going to get married?â
âHey, we do crazier shit literally every day. And itâs not, like, real. Whether or not it helps us get the grant, the marriage can be annulled, or they can get divorced, or whatever. It doesnât have to be a big deal.â
Kate laughs, and then Javi laughs too. She likes watching him laugh; his smile hangs on for such a long time after he stops. Itâs sweet.
âWho do you think it should be?â she wonders.
âI mean, I would do it.â
âYeah?â
âYeah. I suggested it, right? Gotta put my⊠I donât know, my vows where my mouth is.â
âSo rational,â Kate notes, sort of joking, though she does also admire Javiâs pragmatism. Heâs thinking of the crew, how to look out for them, both by securing this grant and by sparing them the need to enter into this plan which isâregardless of what he saysâa little insane. When she thinks of it that way⊠âI guess I would too.â
âYou would get married?â
âWhy not? Since it has to be somebody. Youâre my best friend, anyway,â she says, sending him a soft smile. âIt wouldnât be like marrying a stranger. Besides, nothing would really change.â
âYou donât think so?â Javi asks earnestly. Which is not the easiest question to answer. But Javi has more to say before heâll let her try. âYou know⊠I mean, I told youâŠâ
âThat you wouldâve done anything for me, back then,â Kate fills in. She sees Javi nod against his pillow. She exhales slowly. âYeah. I didnât really pick up on that. I just thought we were friends.â
âWe were friends. We are. I just felt a little more for you than that. Not that I ever wouldâve done anything. You and Jeb were great together. I wouldnât have been dumb enough to try to come between you, and I didnât want to. I just sort of quietlyâŠâ Javi grins like he canât help it. ââŠhad this thing for you.â
Kate returns his grin, amused because itâs easier to feel amused than to feel sad. She wants to be able to talk about Jeb, hasnât let herself in so long, putting herself more than a thousand miles away from anyone else who knew him. Now, it feels so good to hear Jebâs name in the mouth of somebody who cared about him too. With Javi, Jeb will never be forgotten. Kate will never lose the opportunity to talk about Jeb, to reminisce. Javi will be as respectful now as he apparently was then, keeping his own wants reined in so Jeb and Kate could be happy with each other. Who should sheâshould either of themâallow to make her happy now? With his caring, trusting eyes trained on her as the light from the TV flashes and shifts, Javi seems like a pretty good choice.
âItâd be more than practical for you,â she acknowledges.
âIt would.â Javi sighs. âI thought youâd better have all the facts.â
âI appreciate that.â
âAnd now you can admit it,â he prompts.
âWhat?â
âThat you got the hots for me too.â
They share another laugh. But Kate can only laugh so long as a reaction to his teasing tone, because, yeah, she kind of has started to think of him in that way since being back here in Oklahoma. Sheâs been trying to wait it out a little. Part of thatâs fear; Jeb was her last serious attachment. She hasnât been able to love somebody like that again (she hasnât even really tried to date), too scared that something awful will happen. With Javi, itâs a real possibility that he could meet Jebâs exact same fate, and thereâs no place in the whole world Kate could move to that could get her far enough away from here if that happened.
The other reason sheâs waited is that coming back, coming home, has provoked a swirling mess of feelings in herâan emotional tornado, if sheâs honest, and it has taken honesty to let herself be hit by the force of those feelings instead of retreating to the mental bunker where sheâs spent the last five years. Those winds are still calming. In the meantime, Kate hasnât wanted to confuse the feeling of being home with a desire to be more than friends with Javi.
âNot then,â he says kindly, when she doesnât reply right away. âI know you didnât then.â
âComing back,â Kate starts, her gaze drifting, âhasnât been totally what I thought it would be. Iâd be lying if I said you werenât part of that. Youâre the same as you were then, but different too. Iâd never seen you lead a team before.â
âYou surprised those guys listened to me?â
âNo, I guess I just wasnât expecting the way you made room for me. I saw that you were still on my sideâŠ
âI always have been.â
âI know,â she promises, meeting his eye. âAnd you trusted me again, immediatelyââ
âNo reason not to,â Javi says easily.
âThere were reasons not to,â she insists. Does she need to remind him of their first chase after she arrived? How she panicked? How she was the reason they didnât get the third scanner set up and so couldnât collect data that day? âBut you vouched for me. Last time, with our team, you trusted me because I was the head of the project. It felt like you trusted me just as fully this time, even though it meant committing all those other people and all your resources.â
Sheâs surprised, while sheâs being this sincere, that Javi laughs at her.
âI never trusted you just because you were the head of the project,â he explains. âI trusted you because you were you. Youâre still you. Youâre so you that Tylerâs ready to marry you too, and youâve known each other less than a month.â
Kate makes a dismissive sound.
âYou know thereâs something between you,â Javi says. âThat man is crazy about you.â
âI think he might just be crazy. Itâs well-documented on the internet.â
âHeâs always close to you.â
âSo are you.â
âExactly,â Javi agrees. âSo I can speak to his motives.â
âWe survived an EF4 together. He sheltered me with his body in the bottom of a swimming pool. Maybe we just shared an intense, near-death experience.â
âIs that all?â
Kate deflates.
âNo. He is pretty hot.â
âThatâs what I thought,â Javi says triumphantly.
Thereâs more to it than that, but Javi can obviously tell that already, so it doesnât seem worth saying. Kate folds her pillow in half so she can sit up a little higher.
âWell, can we talk about the look on your face?â
âWhen?â
ââWouldnât be my first rodeo,ââ Kate quotes, badly mimicking Tylerâs voice.
âAs if he meant anything by that.â
âHow do you know?â
âHeâs Tyler Owens! He just says shit for dramatic effect!â
Kate crosses her arms and stares at her friend with amusement.
âProbably!â Javi adds weakly.
âI could see you two married. Fake-married.â
âHe is good at what he does,â Javi concedes, âwhen heâs not being a total jackass.â
âIs that all?â she teases.
She hears Javiâs deep sigh.
âIâve watched a few of his YouTube videos,â Javi confesses. âHe takes off his shirt sometimes.â
Kate sinks back down into bed after that. At some point, half-asleep, she hears Javi get up to use the bathroom. He switches off the TV on his way past, and the light quits flickering across Kateâs closed eyelids.
â
They arenât chasing the next day, so they decide to stay in town for breakfast at the little diner. Because theyâre together so muchâhunched over the same screens, crammed into the same vehicles, bunked in the same motel roomsâit isnât unusual for them to not eat together. Four of them practically feels like a family reunion, but Kateâs glad of the company. She, Javi, Tyler, and Boone grab a booth and flap open their cracked plastic menus.
Javi, seated opposite her and next to Boone, keeps looking at her. Kate can feel it without returning his gaze. When she relents and looks back at him while theyâre eating, she sees (as she suspected she would) that he isnât making eyes at her over his pancakesâheâs watching her with Tyler. She makes a face at Javi. Thereâs nothing to see! Tyler might be sitting beside her, but heâs intent on dipping his bacon into the yolks of his eggs, laughing across the table at something Booneâs telling him he captured in recent footage of the crew goofing around. Tyler and Kate arenât looking at one another. They arenât even touching. Yeah, maybe she can feel the heat of him because their thighs are almost close enough to touch on the seat, but it doesnât mean any more today that it did yesterday. Javiâs just trying to make it weird, because of their conversation last night.
I could make it weird too, she threatens with her eyes. That makes Javi smile and go back to his pancakes.
After theyâve finished though, when Boone and Javi get into a discussion that quickly becomes so focused that it shuts out the other side of the table, Tyler nudges Kateâs arm with his elbow and jerks his head towards the door.
Outside, Kate takes a breath that doesnât feel deep enough. Itâs dry today. A field borders one side of the diner parking lot, and the wheat rustles crisply. Taking it all in is second nature, requires no thought at all. Thereâs the windspeed she can guess at when a breeze strokes across her arm; thereâs wind direction, determined when a slightly stronger gush sweeps a strand of hair loose from her ponytail; she judges the atmospheric pressure with her sinuses; and she gathers all of this without even looking at the sky. When she does, itâs cloudless, flat as a blue tablecloth.
She looks at Tyler. Heâs studying her.
âJust trying to pick up some tips,â he says, before she can say anything.
âAnd? Whatâve you learned?â
Tyler just smiles mysteriously.
âYou guys talk last night?â
âMe and Javi?â
âYeah.â
âSure,â Kate says. She knows itâs a vague answer, but Tyler will be bold enough to ask for the information he really wants. Sheâd bet on it.
She turns to face him fully, crosses her arms expectantly.
âDid you decide anything?â Tyler asks. He has his cowboy hat on, but the morning light slants low, making him squint when he looks at her. She circles him a little so heâs not staring into the sun.
âIt shouldnât really be a unilateral decision, should it?â
âTypically, yeah, it is just one person who decides to propose.â
âThis isnât about just one person,â Kate reminds him. âItâs about the crew.â
âIâm aware.â
âWellâŠâ
âWell. Are you guys waiting on a group vote then?â he inquires facetiously.
âI didnât say Javi and I agreed to get married,â she says, frowning.
âYou didnât say you didnât either.â
She sighs at how frustrating Tylerâs being. He shifts his feet, making the gravel crunch under his boots. Thereâs a grit to him tooâin how he only seems like heâs going along with this but obviously has something he feels he still has to say, something he hasnât yet given up on. But Kate has a hard time with waiting. She likes making decisions quickly. Somehow, thisâthe prospect of marriageâis an exception. More complicated than it should be, if itâs just about securing the funding.
(Itâs not. She knows itâs not, especially after talking to Javi last night.)
âIâm better at running,â Kate says quickly. âLately.â
âWhat?â
âThan chasing.â She offers a weak shrug, not sure what to do with herself, with her body. Tylerâs so solid, standing here in front of her. So steady in his eyes.
âDo you wanna chase me?â He doesnât sound surprised, exactly, but his words are less than a challenge.
âSeems like itâs my turn. You followed me to New York and all.â
âI didnât follow you. Your flight got delayed and I had time to buy a ticket. I went with you.â
Itâs true, he did. First, they waited out the delay together. The weather didnât turn into what it mightâve, so it was only an extra hour. Tyler had time to call Boone about coming to get the truck, and Kate had time to call Javi about the storm warning. Javi hadnât left the airport yet. Initially, he came inside. A tornado was about the only thing that could excuse there now being two trucks parked in the Drop-off Only zone outside. (That poor man.) They sat together in the chairs by the check-in desk, Kate and Tyler on either side of Javi as the three of them studied the weather data on his laptop, the hard-edged coloured shapes that scudded across dark county lines. As soon as they knew it was nothing, Javi said heâd drive back to get Boone himself, then bring him to the airport to collect the truck. Tyler said he didnât have to. When Javi insisted, Tyler gave way. That surprised all of them. It was maybe the start of the new team.
In New York, Kate let Tyler come to work with her. Her coworkers were the weather-geek demographic Tyler appeared to have never even dreamed of; many of them were familiar with his YouTube channel. One of them asked if Dani was single. Kate grinned as she stood back and watched Tyler lean into his persona for the fans, into his accentâjust the same as she had leaned away from her accent when she moved up here, not wanting questions about where she was from. Not wanting to think too often of home. She stood and watched, and then she went to her bossâs office and quit with as much grace as she could manage after taking a week off on almost no notice. Tyler urged the whole place into his trademark call and response on their way out the door.
âThatâll numb any hard feelings for a while,â he assured her as they took the elevator down to the lobby.
âWhat hard feelings?â
Tyler frowned at her.
âAbout losing you. Theyâre gonna miss the hell outta you, Sapulpa.â
âToo bad,â she said. She didnât think it was true.
âToo bad is right. You belong to the South, and weâre takinâ you back.â
She wouldnât let him help her pack up her apartment. What had once seemed fresh to herâthe white walls and clean lines of starting overânow seemed barren and sad. She found she was glad to leave it. She didnât want Tyler to see.
He spent his time in other ways. Took a ferry out to Liberty Island. Ate pizza in Brooklyn, pastrami on the Lower East Side. He got up to the Bronx to watch a baseball game at Yankee Stadium. Kate didnât know how he managed it all. They were in New York for three and a half days. Tyler just beamed and told her his feet were killing him. He still helped her carry all her boxes down the stairs of her walk-up while the train rattled by.
They drove back to Oklahoma in a rental truck. Somehow, Tyler made it take four days, when they probably couldâve done it in two. He bought her an ice cream in St. Louis, laughed as it melted so fast that it ran down her hand.
She guesses this, now, standing in a diner parking lot, is overdue. Even though, like Javi said, she and Tyler have known each other less than a month. It doesnât feel like it.
âWhat about you and Javi?â she asks bluntly.
âThat could be fun,â Tyler allows. âThere are a few more buttons there I wouldnât mind pushing. Think heâd go for âJavi Owensâ?â
A laugh bursts from Kate.
âI think youâd be taking your life in your hands if you asked him.â
When Tyler smiles at her, pleased but gentle, she gets it. She got it from them both: theyâd get married for the application, probably even find it a lark, but it wouldnât mean much more than that. Thereâd be less danger in it. That should be a good thingâa reason for Tyler and Javi to be the onesâbut Kate knows itâs also the thing thatâs making them all hold their breath. Theyâre used to this type of crossroad, the three of them, used to tilting their faces to the sky to check the conditions. In the end, theyâll always pick the road that leads them into danger, not away from it.
They both want Kate.
âYou donât have to chase me just because you think you should,â Tyler says sternly. âYou donât have to chase me at all.â His face softens. âIâm standing still.â
She laughs and, incredulous, asks, âSince when?â
âYou,â he says simply. âI like Javi, Kate. I do.â But I want it to be me, his eyes say when his mouth stops.
âYeah.â She knows. She can see that he does.
She and Tyler leave it there, because Boone and Javi are coming out of the diner now. They came in two vehicles and Kate goes with Javi because she knows heâll let her think.
Itâs officially not about the grant anymore. Itâs not even about getting married. This is bigger and smaller than that. Kate puts the passenger-side window of Javiâs truck down (an older truck, no Storm Par logo) and leans into the onrush of air. The marriage would be strategic, but a relationship with either Tyler or Javi would be completely real. Real feelings, real expectations, real mess if it fell apart and they kept working together. Which they would; they all love this job too much.
For just a second, Kate shuts her eyes and wishes this wasnât happening to her. Then she feels silly because, after Jeb, ever falling for another human being seemed astronomically unlikely. She stuck to storms. Had crushes on cloud formations. Made lovesick eyes at the sky when it turned a spooky shade of green. That Javi and Tyler are both ready to be with her seems like a miracle. Sheâs grateful. She just doesnât know how to choose.
Javi leaves her alone for the entirety of the short drive. They pull into the motel lot behind Tyler and Boone and drive to the end where the doors of the crewâs motel rooms stand in a line. Dexter, Dani, and Lily are there as they pull in. Theyâre excited about something; Lilyâs practically dancing on the sidewalk and Dani says something to Boone that makes him yank her into a hug.
Kate and Javi spill out of his truck.
âWhatâs going on?â she asks.
Lily springs towards her, raising her hand to show off a ring thatâs slightly too big, slipping up and down her finger as Kate tries to look. Kateâs eyebrows shoot up.
âDani and I got married!â
âCongratulations,â Tyler says, butting in before Kate can blurt out another What? or When?
âItâs just for the grant,â Lily reminds him, laughing and waving off his sincerity.
âNever thought Iâd say somebody married me for the money,â Dani remarks wryly. Sheâs wearing a ring too. Hers fits better. Kate wonders where they got them, and assumes the tiny antique store on the main strip.
Lily blows Dani a kiss.
âI went as a witness,â Dexter says.
âThis just happened?â Javi asks, looking at each of the three conspirators in turn.
Lily shrugs and says, âYeah.â
âYou didnât talk to the rest of us about it,â Tyler says. Kate doesnât think itâs quite a complaint, but he seems thrown to have been left out of the loop.
âOh, like the three of you let us in on whatever youâve been planning?â Dani demands, pointing out Tyler, Kate, and Javi.
Tyler looks a little sheepish after that.
âHaste was the order of the day,â Dexter says. âIt seemed efficient. We can move forward with our application now.â
âYeah,â Kate agrees, still a little stunned. âFor sure. Efficient. Thanks for taking one for the team, you guys.â
âNo problem,â Lily says, and pulls her into a hug.
Itâs not until later, out at a bar to celebrate the wedding (or the marriage, or their hopes to deceive the government for financial gain, or just their crew, really, who delight in one anotherâs exploits), that Kate, Javi, and Tyler find themselves at the same table. As if itâs a coincidence. Kate presses the rim of her bottle of beer into her smile.
âLived to fight another day,â Tyler says over the vibrant twang of music, staring at the rest of their crew as they line dance to and fro across the floor.
Itâs so typically dramatic of him that Kate and Javi glance at one another, and Kate has to pinch her nose shut so beer doesnât shoot out of it when she laughs.
âOwens, I saw you talking to Kate outside the diner this morning,â Javi reveals. âDidnât look like you were pleading to be spared.â
âYou were spying on us?â Kate demands, rounding on Javi. She gives his shoulder a half-hearted shove as he laughs.
âHey! I wanted to see how things were gonna turn out!â
âIâm pretty curious about how things are gonna turn out myself,â Tyler asserts, leaning forward with his elbows on the table. He gives Kate a significant look. She dodges it, ducking her head with a smile. She can feel the both of them watching her.
Javi reads her right: Â âToo soon to say, huh, Kate?â
She looks up, letting her eyes slide from one face to the other, incredibly fond of them both. Slowly, she grins.
âGuess youâll just have to keep watching the weather,â she tells them.
Kate slaps her hands on the table and rises to join the others on the floor.

The next morning, Tyler knocked on your door at exactly 7:30. You were actually pretty sure you heard him walk up a few minutes before, but you hadnât peeked out because you wanted to see how long he would stand there before announcing himself. However, the second he knocked, you swung open the door with your bag slung over your shoulder and your sunglasses snuggly settled on your face. Tylerâs hand was still raised, leaning forward to knock again, and he was taken off guard. You bit your lip to hide your smile as he quickly caught himself and straightened up.Â
He was wearing what appeared to be the same boots and jeans from the night before (you had noticed a small oil stain on his right thigh when he was driving), but he had exchanged his flannel shirt for a dark maroon long-sleeved denim button-down, his sunglasses tucked into the collar. And of course, his off-white cowboy hat was proudly perched on top of his head.
You, on the other hand, had opted for an outfit rather different from the one you wore the previous night. Gone was the plunging, sheer top and itty-bitty cut-offs. Instead, you chose a comfortably fitting faded band shirt and mid-thigh cargo shorts. You had spent way too long considering your attire for the day and what Tyler may think of each option, but you finally settled on something less impressive but more yourself. It still made you feel attractive, yet comfortable.
And based on the way his eyes roamed across your body, Tyler approved of this decision. âGood morning, sweetheart. You look as beautiful as ever.â
âThank you,â you said, stepping out into the hall and using the fact you had to lock the door as a reason to hide your face for a moment. âI wasnât sure what one was supposed to wear to go tornado wranglinâ but this seemed like a safe choice.â
âUnlike your brotherâs team, we donât do uniforms or dress codes so whatever you wanted to wear would have been fine. In fact, just for the hell of it, Boone and I have gone on a few chases wearing nothing at all. But you wonât see those videos on our YouTube channel.â He winked at you before sliding your backpack off your shoulder and placing it on his own. Then he added, âDonât get me wrong, I loved what you were wearing last night too, but this justâŠit feels more you.â
The butterflies that had laid dormant since last night once again sprang to life in your stomach. âSeems youâve got me figured out pretty quickly there, Mr. Owens. Anything else youâve noticed about me?â
âLetâs seeâŠâ Placing his arm over your shoulder, he began to steer you towards the stairs as he thought. âYou have a sarcastic, confident shell you hide behind so people donât see how vulnerable you feel. You know how to use your looks to your advantage in certain situations, but otherwise seem to forget how breathtaking you are. Andââ you had started to turn at his last comment, but he placed his finger under your chin and tilted your head towards him ââyou like to hide your face when someone compliments you, though Iâm not sure yet if itâs because you donât want them to see how their words affect you or if you donât think you deserve the praise. Maybe a bit of both.â
You shifted under the weight of his sage-green gaze. âYou make me sound like Iâm heading into a battle with my armor, my weapon, and my shield.âÂ
âMaybe you are. Is that how it feels to you?â
In fact, it sometimes was, though you werenât going to admit that. You rolled your eyes instead, trying to hide how rattled you were by his spot-on assessment. âGeez, and here I thought you were a tornado wrangler, not a therapist.â Shifting the topic off of yourself, you asked, âWhen did you learn to read people so well?â
Now it was Tylerâs turn to become uncomfortable. His eyes flickered away for the first time and he muttered, â...Iâd rather not say.â
If he had seemed hurt or sad or uneasy as the two of you made your way down to the first floor, you would have dropped it immediately. However, the way he avoided eye contact now after just staring at you so intently, plus the slight redness spreading up his neck and face, told you he was hiding it for a very different reason. And after all the times you had been embarrassed in front of him, you werenât going to let this opportunity go.Â
You slipped from under his arm and turned to face him as you reached the top of the stairs. âWell, now you have to tell me! You canât just tease me with something like that and expect me to drop it! Besides, all weâve done since we met is talk about me and my messed up life. Let me learn something about you for once.â
He sighed, chewing on the inside of his lip, then said, âOkay, you asked.â As the two of you began walking down to the ground floor, he said, âBack before I got into storm chasing, I used to compete in the rodeo circuit.â
âReally?â you asked. âI didnât know that. Have you ever mentioned that on your channel?â
âNah. It was another life. But, one of the things you learn when youâre left staring down a 2,000-pound bull is how to be observant. You gotta notice every little shift or twitch he makes to predict what heâs gonna do and how to stay outta his way. And after a while, it just becomes a habit you do with everyone you meet.â
You raised one eyebrow. âOh, so you noticed all those things about me because you were examining me like a bull about to charge you?â
âPretty much, yeah,â he chuckled. âWhich is why I didnât want to tell you. Most girls donât tend to like it when you compare them to a cow.âÂ
âWell, Iâm not most girls,â you said as you reached the bottom of the stairs and faced him once more.
He smiled, his eyes sparkling in the morning light. âIâve noticed. Youâre definitely keeping me on my toes.â
âOh?â you asked, taking a step closer to him. âAfraid you wonât get out of my way in time?â
He leaned over until the brim of his hat just grazed the top of your head. âI havenât decided if I want to yet.â
Staring into his eyes, you felt that same zap of electricity from the night before zooming through your body. You watched his tongue peek out, slowly wet his lips, and, without meaning to, you leaned in closer untilâ
Slam!
Jumping at the loud noise to your left, you and Tyler both turned to see Scott glaring at the two of you as the Storm PAR team swarmed around their vehicles, loading up their gear. Scott had just slammed the sliding door on the van marked âWizardâ and, after spitting his gum on the ground and popping in a new piece, eyes trained on you the entire time, he climbed into the front seat of Scarecrow and started the engine. You saw Javi approaching Lion and he lifted his hand, giving you a small, apologetic smile that you returned. Then he climbed into the truck and the Storm PAR team pulled out of the lot.Â
Whatever spell you and Tyler had been under now broken, you resumed walking towards the cluster of Wranglersâ vehicles. There was an awkward tension in the air you had never felt around him before and, in an attempt to break it, you asked, âSo, is that how you read tornados so well? You approach them the same way you approached a bull?â
He shrugged, seemingly as happy to get back to the earlier conversation as you were. âMore or less. Thereâs more science that goes into it but you just have to make careful observations and then, ultimately, go with your gut. Even if that means ignoring what all the data is telling you.â
âAnd that works?â
âMost of the time.â
âAnd when it doesnât?â
He grinned as he approached the side of an old, beat-up camper van. âThen you better hope you have a great team watching your back.â With that, he banged twice on the side of the van.
The doors flew open and four people jumped out. You recognized them all from their YouTube videos as the other members of Tylerâs crew, but you couldnât remember any of their names except for Boone. He was the other man you had seen with Tyler in the diner parking lot when you first arrived and he always manned the handheld camera in the videos, making commentary and jokes as Tyler drove them into a storm.
Tyler quickly introduced you to everyone. He had already filled them in on who you were and that you would be riding with them for the next week or so. You had been slightly worried about how they would feel about you tagging along given how Scott had responded to the idea of you going on a chase. However, they swarmed around you excitedly and immediately began to chat about how much you were going to love your first storm as if you had known them for ages.
It was such a stark difference from your brotherâs reaction. Where he was instantly dismissive and challenged your bravery, each and every one of the Wranglers welcomed you with open arms, giving you heads-ups about what it would be like out there and assuring you it was fine to react in different ways. They even shared their various first storm chases and how they had responded (it was comforting to know that even Boone, who seemed as reckless and wildâif not more soâas Tyler, had torn a vocal chord âscreaming like a little girlâ the first time Tyler had planted the truck in the middle of a storm).
Your head was on a constant swivel as each of your four new friends talked over one another, and as you moved to turn from Dexter explaining the different tracking equipment the crew used to monitor storms to Dani explaining the upgrades that had been made to Tylerâs truck, you caught sight of Tyler. He was several feet away from the mob surrounding you, leaning his shoulder against the van with his arms folded across his chest, amusement gleaming in his eyes as he watched the chaos around you. Seeing the slight panic in your eyes, he chuckled softly to himself before pushing off the side of the van and clapping his hands to get everyoneâs attention.
âAll right guys, give her room to breathe. Sheâll be here for at least a week so no need to tell her your whole life stories in the first five minutes. Sheâs still getting used to things around here and we donât wanna scare her off.â As they all apologized and backed away, you tried to assure them you were fine but Tyler came over and placed his hands on your shoulders. âItâs alright, sweetheart, weâre just all a little excited to have some fresh blood around here. Now, Dexter, is there any breakfast left? Iâm starved and I doubt sheâs eaten either.â
You tried to insist you were fine, but the words died in your throat as Dexter opened the door to the camper van and the sticky sweet smell of freshly syruped pancakes hit your nose, eliciting a loud growl from your stomach. Tyler must have heard it because he chuckled and began directing you towards the van, walking behind you as he steered you by your shoulders.Â
As you ate, it was decided that today you would ride in the camper van with Dani and Dexter so you could get close to the storms, yet not have to immediately dive into one. At first, you wanted to object, thinking they meant that figuratively. But then you remembered the videos you had seen of Tyler and Boone driving straight into the center of a tornado, and, realizing they meant that literally, you agreed it was probably for the best. Part of you wanted to impress Tyler and jump into his truck anyway, but Scottâs comment that you would get too scared and force his team to end the chase early echoed in your mind.Â
You were still a little disappointed Tylerâs âembarrassing secretâ he had tried to keep hidden this morning was not embarrassing at all. Instead, you had just prodded him into sharing something that made him seem infinitely cooler than he already had. And, once again, you were reminded of the fact that since you two had met, you had spent the majority of the time either complaining about how much of a jerk your brother was, how shitty of a person you used to be, or crying into his shoulder. Meanwhile, here he was, this daredevil tornado wrangler who learned how to read people by staring down deadly bulls for a living and looked like most womenâs cowboy wet dream come to life.Â
You wanted to prove to him that you were more than what he had seen so farâthat you were worthy of all the time and attention he was giving you. If you told Tyler you wanted to ride with him, you had no doubt he would let you. But what if Scott was right and you freaked out as soon as you neared a tornado? What if you had a panic attack or somehow caused the Wranglers to turn back instead of diving into the storm? They made their moneyâmoney they used to help othersâfrom their videos. A video they would not be able to post if they couldnât record a storm because you were having a complete meltdown.Â
So, at least for today, you climbed into the back of the camper van as everyone got ready to chase their first storm of the day.
Dani and Dexter were an interesting pair. Dani was brash and loud, riding with her boots propped up on the dashboard as she slouched in her seat, all the while telling you jokes and poking fun at the other Wranglers. Dexter was more reserved at first, but the longer Dani talked, the more comfortable he seemed and he began joining in. You could tell by how they interacted, often speaking over the other or laughing at a joke before it got to the punchline, that they spent a lot of time together and had a close bond. It was really nice to see. You thought about how stiff and professional the members of Storm PAR seemed and you found yet another reason to be thankful Scott had turned you away. There was no way you would be having this much fun with his team.
As time went on and the clouds above you began to darken, Dexter began to explain how storms were formed, what kinds of conditions were necessary for them, the destruction they could cause, and how much scientists still didnât know about them. Dani rested her head in her hand, looking half-asleep as she struggled to listen to information you were sure she had heard a million times before, but you were captivated.
Just as Dexter began telling you how the radar in the center console worked, the radio crackled to life and Tylerâs voice, distorted slightly through the ancient speaker, came through. âYou okay back there, sweetheart?â Dani picked up the receiver and passed it back to you. âDani and Dexter arenât just bickering the whole time, are they?â
You laughed as both Dani and Dexter objected to that statement. âNo, theyâre great. Dexterâs been teaching me all about the science behind the storms. Itâs been much more interesting than those dry reports Scotty left behind.â You saw Dexter beaming in the rearview mirror and you smiled back at him.
âWell, just donât let him get started on funnel formation or you might change your mind.â Dexter shot a stern glance at the radio as Dani looked out the window, swallowing a laugh. Then, lowering his voice slightly so it felt like he was speaking to you and you alone, Tyler said, âI canât wait to get you up here with me so I can show you the storm through my eyes.â
Clutching the radio closer to your face, you smiled softly. âThat sounds amazing. I canât wait. And Tyler, Iââ You wanted to thank him again for everything he was doing for you. For welcoming you into his life without a second thought and introducing you to these other people who were already starting to feel more like family than your own flesh-in-blood. But, more than that, you wanted to thank him for the way he always made you feel as if he was actually excited you were thereâthat you were wanted. But just as you were trying to find the words to express those feelings, you remembered the rest of the team could hear you and you quickly cleared your throat. âUm, just be safe up there. You canât show me anything tomorrow if you do something stupid today.â
âYou heard the lady, Boone. Guess weâre taking it easy today.â You heard Boone muttering his objection and you could almost see his pout through the radio. âCell should be coming up on our left. Yâall enjoy the show.â
The radio clicked off, but you continued staring at the receiver, cupping it close to your chest as you thought about all the things you wished you had been able to say to him.
Glancing back at you, Dani and Dexter exchanged a look before chuckling to themselves. Looking up, you asked, âWhat?â
âOh, nothing,â Dani said, examining her nails. âJust seems that someoneâs already fallen under the spell of the olâ Owens charm.â
You raised an eyebrow. ââThe olâ Owens charmâ?â
âYou know exactly what I mean. Believe it or not, he doesnât do it on purpose, itâs just who he is and he canât turn it off if he triedânot that he even realizes heâs doing it. Heâs just naturally one smooth SOB that anyone could find hard to resist.â
A vice suddenly tightened around your heart making it hard to breathe. WasâŠwas that all this was? Did Tyler treat everyone he met with the same kind of attention and kindness? Were you reading into his actions more than you should?Â
Trying to maintain a blank expression, you shook your head. âWell, itâs not like that. Heâs just letting me hang out with you guys to piss off my brother.â
âThatâs what he saidâŠbut Iâve seen that look before,â Dani said smugly.Â
âDaniâŠâ Dexter muttered, giving her a pointed glance.
âWhat look?â you asked.
âThe one you had when Tyler was talking to you. Like you were soaring on cloud nine and he was the only other person up there with you. Happens all the time.â
âDani,â Dexter said a little louder.
But she either didnât hear him or ignored him as she continued, âIt doesnât help that heâs so damn noble on top of everything. You should see the things he does when we stop by a town that has just been hit. Heâs almost been crushed in more destroyed houses than I can count trying to go back for a kidâs teddy bear or a familyâs photo album. The guy just canât say no to someone in need.â
âDani!â
âWhat?â She glanced at her friend then back to you and her smile faded. She must have noticed the way you had folded in on yourself, your arms wrapped tightly around your middle as you tried to process everything she had said.Â
Stuttering slightly, Dani tried to backtrack. âHey, listen, I didnât meanâŠâ She sighed and ran her hand through her dark hair. âI might be wrong. Tylerâs never invited someone to join the team outta nowhere like this. And heâs seemed different since he came back from your date yesterday.â
âIt wasnât a datââ you mumbled, but she cut you off.
âWhatever it was. Heâs had even more swagger in his step than usual and, this morning, he checked his watch like a million times to make sure he wasnât late meeting you at your room. And Tyler never gets wound up like that for anyone. Right, Dexter?â The man nodded, and Dani smiled as if to say âsee? I told youâ. But then her smile dimmed slightly. âJustâŠjust be careful. You seem like a really nice girl and none of us want to see you get hurt. So maybe know where you stand with him before you let yourself fall too hard.â
âThanks,â you said, letting your arms unfold slightly. You were still questioning every interaction you had had with Tyler, but knowing you might have had some effect on him did make you feel a little better.
âPlus, youâve been a lot of fun to have around and Iâd hate for you to leave because Tyler canât see what a catch he has in front of him.â Dani winked at you, and you gave her a small smile.Â
You lean forward and hand her the radio. In an attempt to break some of the tension that has now filled the camper van, you asked Dexter to resume what he was saying when Tyler called. But as he happily returns to explaining the radar monitor, the excitement you had previously had listening to his lessons had evaporated. Instead, all you could think about was Tyler.
You thought about the way he held you close to his chest last night, his arms wrapped around you as you cried. You thought about the way he defended you to Scott, how he said you had found someone willing to give you their âattention and loveâ. You thought about that spark of electricity flowing between you as he pressed his lips to the back of your hand, and how that same spark seemed to gleam in his eyes before he left. You thought about this morning as you had leaned in to kiss Tyler, and how for just a brief moment before Scottâs slamming truck door ruined the moment, you swore you saw Tyler begin to lean in too.
Were you just seeing what your smitten heart wanted to see?Â
The more you thought about it, the more you realized Dani was right. You needed to know for sure how Tyler felt before your feelings for him grew any stronger. If he was just being nice and that was all, that was fine. You were supposed to be here to get revenge on Scott, not to fall in love. So if that was the case, you would stuff down these developing feelings and try your best to forget them. But if Tyler really did feel this same magnetic pull that you did, wellâŠthat would be great to know too.
Part 5 coming 9/9!

hiya! loved the scott x reader you posted:) i also have a little request for him, it's two ideas i combined together so please feel free to choose one or the other if you don't like them together! one was that reader likes to anonymously leave little presents for scott on his seat in the truck, just snacks or little trinkets from the convenience stores. especially if it's one of those little solar powered dancing figurines that you can mount on the dashboard. the other thought was that reader likes to make bracelets to relax before going to bed in various hotels. first it starts off just making them for the people that she regularly teamed with until she makes so many that she ends up making enough over time for all of them out on the road. when scott finally finds his bracelet on his truck seat he realizes who was leaving all the other presents:) thanks in advance!!
Of Trinkets, Treats, & Bracelets | Scott x Reader
Summary: You show Scott you like him in small ways. Scott shows you he likes you in a big way.
A/N: I love jealous Scott if you canât tell.
Honestly, Scott had thought maybe it was Javi at first. The little gifts that would be left on his seat in the truck everytime Storm Par stopped at a gas station or truck stop. After all, he and Javi were pretty close, and Javi was a nice guy like that. But when he asked, Javi denied it with a smile. âNah, thatâs not me, man.â âSo who?â Scottâs brow furrowed. Javi just smirked.
It was always either one of his favorite snacks, his favorite drinks, or one of those little solar powered figurines you put on the dash. Or his favorite, a pack of gum. He stopped trying to figure out where the gifts were coming from, because Javi sure wasnât telling him.
It was a Tuesday, and Storm Par was stopped at a truck stop, glaring at Tyler and his crew who had just pulled in. Scottâs attention was stolen from their competition however by you, flouncing up to James, the Storm Par member you drove with most often.
âI made your bracelet,â you beam, outstretching your hand. James smiled and took the bracelet you were offering him. âAw, thanks, (Name). Now weâre all matching.â âAnd Javi!â you exclaimed brightly.
You turned your attention to Javi and Scott. Javi held out his hand to accept the offering. âThank you, (Name),â he grinned. âYours is coming soon,â you promised Scott with bright eyes. Then you turned away, heading to the convenience store.
Scott watched you go, oblivious to Javi watching him. You bounced, thatâs the thing about you, you didnât walk you practically bounced, towards the store, when you were stopped by Tyler.
Scottâs jaw clenched.
He couldnât hear what Tyler was saying to you from the distance he was at, but he watched you smile and greet the hillbilly warmly.
âYouâre glaring holes into their heads,â Javi commented, and Scottâs attention was torn away. âWhat? No. Shut up.â He scowled. Javi chuckled. âWhatever you say, man.â
Scott turned back just in time to watch you wave goodbye to Tyler with a grin on your face. He rolled his eyes and turned back to Javi to talk about their plan for the day.
Ten minutes later, it was time to head out, and when Scott opened the passenger side door, Javi was driving, there was a pack of gum and a coke on his seat.
That night, you were curled up in your bed in the motel Storm Par was staying at. You were working on Scottâs bracelet, as youâd promised him. Everyone in Storm Par had a bracelet (Scott had noticed earlier), and Scottâs was the last one. You wanted to take your time with it; Scott was your favorite.
You made it blue, his favorite color. You added the final touches before snuggling into bed, giddy to give it to him tomorrow.
The next day came and you didnât have a single opportunity to see Scott. He wasnât at breakfast, and as you usually (unfortunately) were, you werenât in the same truck today. So when Storm Par stopped at a gas station, you did with the bracelet what you did with everything else you got Scott: left it on his seat.
Scott was in a bad mood today. No particular reason why, heâd just woken up on the wrong side of the motel bed. Javi was avoiding him; Scott didnât blame him, his bad moods were infamous. Despite getting out of the truck to use the bathroom, Scott didnât feel like standing outside and socializing, so he went to get back in the truck when he was done.
He stopped in his tracks when he opened the door. On his seat was a bracelet, matching the ones the other Storm Par members wore. The bracelet youâd promised him.
Suddenly, everything clicked. It was you, who always left him his favorite snacks, his favorite gum, his favorite drinks, stupid little tchotchkes. He picked up the bracelet, turning it over in his hand.
His cheeks warmed.
âHey!â Your cheerful voice suddenly behind him almost made him jump. He turned to face you, face neutrally blank. Your eyes fell to the bracelet he was holding. âI see you got my gift.â
âI did,â Scott confirmed. âAnd I suppose itâs you whoâs been leaving me all the snacks and gum and stuff.â You blushed. âYeah, I hope thatâs not weird or anything.â
âNo, itâsâŠâ Scott swallowed. âSweet.â
You smiled bashfully. âNot creepy?â you joked. Scott shook his head, a smile tugging at his lips. âWell, maybe itâs a little creepy that you know all my favorites.â
You turned your nose up. âIâm observant,â you smirked.
Scott looked like he wanted to say more and you waited, but he was cut off by someone shouting your name. You looked over your shoulder and he looked over you to see⊠Tyler. He frowned.
âWell, I hope you like the bracelet.â You turned back to him. âI made it with lots of love. We leaving in five?â Scott nodded wordlessly, his eyes tracking you as you ran over to Tyler.
âSo you figured it out,â Javi smirked, coming up beside Scott. Scott chomped on his gum. âThat sheâs the one whoâs been leaving me stuff?â Javi caught Scott fiddling with his bracelet. He let out a whistle. âOh she likes you.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean all of our bracelets are matching to a degree but theyâre each personally customized. Your bracelet is like an exact match to hers. How cute.â
Scott hadnât even noticed. âDoesnât mean anything,â he mumbled.
Javi rolled his eyes. âOh come on, Scott. She knows your favorite snacks and drinks, hell, she knows your favorite gum. She goes out of her way to get something for you every time we stop. She doesnât do that for anyone else, not even me. She made you matching bracelets.â
Scott was glaring daggers at Tyler as he pulled you into a hug. Javi followed his gaze. âShe likes you, man. Go do something about it.â
Before Scott could stop himself, he found himself marching over to you and Tyler, fist clenched. âWell howdy, Clipboard,â Tyler greeted, noticing Scott before you did. You turned around, smiling when you saw him. âScottââ
You were abruptly cut off when Scott stopped in front of you, leaned down, and pressed his lips to yours roughly. Immediately forgetting you had an audience, you melted into the kiss, closing your eyes and resting your hands on Scottâs chest, gripping the material of his shirt.
Scott pulled back after a moment, leaving you stunned. He rested his hand on your waist, pulling you into his side. He squared up to Tyler. âBack off, Owens.â
Tyler grinned, eyes shifting from Scottâs scowl to your shocked face. He raised his hands in surrender and walked away, still with that shit-eating grin.
Scott led you back to Storm Par.
âWell thatâs one way to do it,â Javi smirked.

Series Masterlist
