TLK: More Sakin

Had Sakin brainrot and had to do some sketches of my OC as a comeback after a long, climactic semester

For anyone unfamiliar, Sakin is the OC father I made for Vitani. Three things played into his creation:

One, I feel like Vitani doesn't have anything to really do with Scar, because not only does she not look much like him to me, but I feel like she'd have a complex if she were Scar's kid but not chosen by him (which is more commonly accepted by the fandom as something Nuka struggles with, so I saved that complex for him)

It's said by the director of TLK (who... hardly remembers working on the film) that Kovu was an orphan adopted by Zira, so his very own dad would have to be a completely different guy. Vitani is the spitting image of Zira and I can't see her being a littermate of Kovu and therefore another orphan unrelated to Zira because of that, so I had to make a separate father for her. (ngl as I write this I'm kinda getting jumbled ideas on how to make sense of Vitani and Kovu's parentage, I have made Chumvi and an OC named Huzuni into Kovu's parents but I'm also willing to experiment with other headcanons in the future since it's been years)

I made him solely out of wanting to make a Barbary Lion in the TLK universe, as well as to establish the headcanon that Vitani is half-Barbary Lion to explain her long fur (which is a stylistic choice I went with to distinguish Barbary Lions in TLK, yes males have long, extensive, dense manes. IRL Barbary Lionesses don't get full-on tufts or anything, but their pelt fur is generally a bit longer, though)

Anyway, here's a Kiara x Kovu cubs challenge, except I have too many fankids of them so I had to shove one of them in as a little doodle oops

I'm still developing my little guys' story so I'll keep it brief, but it's still a wall of text when put together so I'm shoving it under read more. It'll be under the image description

ID start: A group of digital doodles made in a template that's labelled "TLK KxK character challenge". The first one, labelled "heir/oldest", is a dark lion with Pridelander features, green eyes and a black slicked back mane. The second one, labelled "fiercest/second", is a dark lion with Pridelander features, red eyes and a dark blown mane that falls over their face. The third one, labelled "third", is a tan lioness with fluffy long fur, pointy ears and green eyes. The fourth, labelled "fourth", is a golden tan lion with brown mane styled like Simba's and blue eyes. The fifth, labelled "fifth", is a little doodle of a tan lioness with brown patch on the left side of their face and fur slicked back, with blueish green and red eyes. The sixth, labelled "youngest", is a golden brown lion with a messy hair tuft and red eyes. Usiku - he/him - Firstborn and the future king. Quiet and and stoic, while he doesn't mind company he doesn't like talking much either and isn't the most social of animals, he pretty much accepted the fact that he'll only have a few close friends in his life. Unfortunately, by the time he's born not all Pridelanders have yet to accept the former outsiders, and the Pridelanders are a superstitious kind, so Usiku, looking strikingly similar to a certain tyrant king of the past, took the brunt force of that prejudice out of all of his siblings. Sometimes he feels trapped, feeling like he has to be this perfect heir and king and never show how it makes him feel so he doesn't prove his critics "right". He'll learn to stand up for himself in time, at least he has his best friend Sawa to support him through this.

Sawa - she/her - Twin to Usiku and the future leader of the lionguard. Sawa is energetic and talkative, some may say even too energetic and talkative. She's always been close with her brother, understanding him like no other, and talks for the both of them. She doesn't take shit from anyone and speaks her mind. Aside from her brother, the other family closest to her I'd Vitani, as the two spent a lot of time together as she trained Sawa. Sawa looks up to her aunt a lot and feels like she can tell her anything, she's in fact the first person Sawa came out to as a lioness - after her brother and best friends, of course!

Kiazi - she/her - Thirdborn, Kiazi doesn't have much of a role in the future of the pridelands outside of being a royal advisor at most, but she's happy with this role. She's a laid back yet extremely wise lioness, and often the voice of reason and a supporting shoulder amongst her siblings. Although younger than them, she was very close to her older brother and sister, trailing their tails when she was younger. Nowadays she's more of a loner, but still keeps a very good relationship with her family. She doesn't care much for being a princess and would be just as content to be just a regular pridesister.

Kiburi - he/him - Unlike his littermate Kiazi, Kiburi is not so happy with where he stands in the royal family and life is general. Since cubhood the adults and animals around him cooed over how strikingly similar he is to his grandpa Simba, and hearing stories of his grandpa and how he rebelled against his tyrant uncle filled his head with ideas power and grandness. He wanted to live up to his legacy, but being 4th in line and the spots in Sawa's lion guard being already filled, he felt trapped and unaccomplished in his life. The idea of being shipped off to marry some princess and becoming a lord or a king in some foreign kingdom didn't suit him either, he didn't want to leave his home behind, yet grew bitter and resentful that he didn't have a "better" position in his homepride. Hearing the whispers of doubt about his older brother from some animals only fueled his feelings. Maybe his brother didn't deserve the throne, he's just going to run their kingdom into the ground like Scar did. Maybe it was Kiburi's destiny to stop him, like his grandfather did generations ago. Maybe he can still be a hero- a king.

Kupatwa Kwa Mwezi - he/she/they - The fifth child of Kiara and Kovu, born first in their last litter. Kupatwa had a few oddities about her, mainly her strange coat...or the fact that nobody could tell if they were meant to be a lion or a lioness. Kupatwa was a lonely cub, feeling insecure about their body, especially as they grew- the other cubs made fun of him, mocked him, called him a freak. Their family accepted them for who they were, of course; they had their siblings, their littermates, their one best friend, but...the other lions' words still hurt, and the profound sense of wrongness about their body only made it worse. It wasnt until Kupatwa was a young teen did she meet somebody special- a lioness with a mane, somebody like them. Somebody who could relate to their struggle of fitting in. Kupatwa was still shy, but admired the stranger curiously from afar, and he wasn't subtle about it either as he was eventually approached by them. The two became friends over time, the older lioness being like a mentor figure to him, listening to their woes, giving advice, helping Kupatwa to finally accept and love himself. It was good to know that he wasn't alone in his struggles. Kupatwa took a little while to finally accept his body, and even longer to accept the fact he didn't want to be a lion or a lioness to begin with, and in the end he came out the other side loving himself more than ever

Kianga - he/him - Kuupatwa's littermate and best friend, Kianga stuck by him through thick and thin and whenever his big sibling was bullied by other cubs he was there to beat them back with a stick...literally. A little overenthusiastic, bouncy and loud cub who was a Ray of sunshine and loved to brighten up other people's days. Always the adventurer, he pulled Kupatwa into all sort of trouble. He always looked up to his older sister Sawa especially and thought it was SO cool how she was a lioness born a lion, but it wasn't until he was a teen that he realised maybe he related to her in that way...just the other way around. And just as Kianga had been supporting her the entire time, Kupatwa was there to support him on his road to discovery too- and growl at any asshole who tried to tell him who he should be.

In honor of that gorgeous screencap -- how did Vitani react when Gale finally admitted his feelings? How does she feel knowing she's important to someone?

I know I let it sit in my inbox for a spell, but I needed to gather my thoughts to make sense instead of just keysmashing a whole paragraf of text 😅

Vitani was on the verge of tears well before the confession came, so when the words appeared, there was no longer any holding back. Vitani kind of knew that already, felt it, because Gale danced around this for a short while before, but saying things aloud holds meaning and gives Vitani clarity.

There is a possibility to ask Gale, after everything, if he meant what he said. I imagine Vitani does so every day for a long while. Not because there is any doubt there, but.. it’s so wonderful to hear it. And Vitani still thinks it’s a dream that they didn’t wake up from that enchanted forest clearing.

Because that’s it. That was the dream, and it came true. Vitani feels needed, feels appreciated, and is a vital part of someone else’s life. And has found someone to share those sensations with - Vitani will do her very best to make Gale feel the same way.

For the first time in their life - Vitani is in love, the truest kind, that overwhelming in the best ways kind of love that was so far only known from books and stories spun by bards.

Summary of Art - 2023

(Forgot to post this on Tumblr the same day as I did on DeviantArt 🤡)

A New Year's Eve tradition of mine has come around once again! A few minutes late because my internet went kablooey at the last second :U

You can see where I went through a slump in my gallery because of the few art choices. We love a transitional time like getting ready for college transfer in spring that turns into dissatisfaction with my approaches to art 🙃

As for my New Year's Art Resolutions?

For one thing, maybe less gray. Not that gray is bad, it's just that it showed up a *lot* in this year's summary due to dark photos taken of paper drawings or utilizing a neutral canvas for sketch dumps.

Wrap up the continuous Vitani's Guard drawings/story. Also fill up the Supplementary Material subfolder with concept art/scrapped art/added scenes.

Draw more than one thing per month so my choices for future summaries aren't so limited. Also posting more just guarantees more motivation because of interaction and creativity.

Post past/current artwork I've done in my graphic design classes to break up fandom art and to fill out my gallery per month.

ESPECIALLY post past work if I can't bring myself to draw anything new because I'm busy or going though another inevitable slump.

What's in Store for 2024:

The completion of the continuous Vitani's Guard storyline/illustrations followed by supplementary material containing concept art, scrapped scenes/art, and added scenes.

Headcanon/AU art for multiple fandoms.

Academic portfolio art.

A crossover AU between two certain films. An AU that I've been making behind-the-scenes art for for almost five years. 👀

Summary of Art 2022 Clock Template was designed by Taxkha. I know this template was made for 2022 but I liked it so much that I swapped the text. If this counts as butchering the original art, let me know.

(ngl I have a clock in my house that kinda looks like this lol. Also irrelevant but... because I'm used to reading left-to-right, it's made me wonder what it would be like if the clock went the other way, like if the 1 was to the left of the 12 and so on rather than how it's to the right)
