i want to talk about this whole scene because it's so. So important for shima's character im(very honest)o

((so, for an easier read im going to give a number to the 7 pics: 1 is top left, 2 is top right, 3 is middle left, 4 is middle middle, 5 is middle right, 6 is bottom left and 7 is bottom right. there should be no confusions now.))

OKAY!!!! so before this scene, we see mukai and shima talking about feelings, about how shima sees people and how he sees love/lovers as not important. he brings up the fact that his father had an affair and things were rough in his household because of that (we can also see a bit of it during some of the flashbacks we get of his childhood too), so his perception of love is stated to not be the same as everyone else's.

now, why do i bring this up? well, well, well, my friends, we all know that shima here is having a bit of self discovery, and while everyone suspects it's because he has had Thee realisation that he may like mitsumi back, i think it's a bit more complicated than that.

you see, in pic 3, we can see how every action of mitsumi's has affected shima in some way. he's been shown kindness in actions which he has probably never received back. shima doesn't trust anyone besides maybe chris and rika, and even then his relationship with rika is fucked up because of the mistake of trusting someone else in the past. so for him to begin trusting mitsumi only for her to like him romantically as well is quite a hit. he tries to save it, make it easier for her but he isn't in it and mitsumi notices and she would rather a happy and comfortable shima than an uncomfortable one so she breaks it off.

in pic 1, we see a glimpse of his guilt for not being a good boyfriend to her even if he didn't want to be one in the first place. he should've played the part, didn't he? it almost feels like déjà vu... it was a special thing, just like his child actor days, filled with laughter and fun, but shima had to go and ruin it with his feelings for the ones who were actually having fun, no matter how uncomfortable he felt about it.

but he knows, mitsumi is different than them. she's... better, in some way. she still hung out with him, gave him gifts and bought him free food (pic 3), teaches him how to hold crabs (pic 4) after they broke it off. with her, shima is different. himself, maybe. it's like all of his fears are watered down, slowly dissolving with the sea water as he gets bit by a crab because he failed to hold it right (pic 6). there's no judgement, and it goes both ways (beginning of the chapter + pic 5).

the pinch hurts, sure, those crabs are little assholes, but it brings shima to this conclusion: love, like the crab's pinch, hurts. (and it begs the questions:) but isn't it beautiful when you hold it between your hands and give it to someone else's open hands? isn't sharing the beauty of nature with someone the ultimate language of love? (pic 7)

still, love is confusing, and shima has a long way before he does anything with his new found feelings of affection towards mitsumi, but i'm very excited to see how it goes from here!!

the piece i was tagged to explain my process on is this oc piece! unfortunately i have a habit of deleting my original clip studio file once ive finished my art and saved it as a new png file, so i dont have the file to show the sketch and different stages of this piece. but I still can go through my general process and talk about how i did that piece!

1. planning

honestly i think about the art that i want to do a lot, and in this last year or so ive thought about the art i want to do more than ive been able to actually create and finish that art that i want to do. for my planning i tend to do a lot of different thumbnail sketches for the art im thinking of

these are some examples of thumbnails, a lot of times ill do thumbnails just on pencil and paper and with some of these theyre done quickly with my fingers on my phone note function on a day where i was feeling too bad to get up and draw on paper but still wanted to get the thumbnail ideas down. two of these are for the same songxiao piece that i still havent finished and i have more thumbnails digitally on clip studio for the same piece, i do a lot more thumbnails when a piece isnt working the way i want it to and theres times where ill completely scratch a thumbnail or a sketch and start over in order to do more thumbnails because i dont feel happy with some aspect of it.

two of these are small gouche painting thumbnails for two pieces i did maybe a month or so ago, i did the thumbnails and then tried to expand on them digitally and im wanting to do more thumbnail paintings like this in the future because it was fun

for the piece of my oc trio it was based off a series of ask prompts i got for a few different outfit prompt memes i had reblogged, so i based their outfits on the ones in the meme. when im drawing figures i tend to try and get the movement down in the poses when im sketching, i do several rough sketches of the pose before beginning to start setting down lines (if im doing lineart at all because sometimes i dont like doing lineart and do a more lineless painting kind of style). i really try to get my art to convey some kind of emotion, in the oc piece i wanted it to feel fun and like youre seeing three best friends while theyre out on the town having a fun night

2. creating

this is the only real example i have of a piece in the middle of being filled in and created, this piece is one that im really not very happy with & have had lying around for a while and ill probably scrap it and try to come at it from a different perspective at some point. but anyway it still shows what i do, i lay down a kind of neutral gray color underneath my final sketch/lineart if im doing lineart in that piece and then i start picking out the colors that i want for the piece and kind of setting out a pallette for myself. i dont do this color pallette thing 100% of the time but i do it really often, especially if im working on a commission or a larger piece where i know theres going to be a lot of colors or if its a piece where im not sure exactly what color scheme i want so laying out the colors together helps me kind of decide what kind of scheme i want. i am sooooo picky about my colors in my art i am genuinely obsessed with colors in art and there are times where i really have to stop myself from working on something forever just constantly adding more colors or putting little tiny changes and gradients in the colors.

after ive got the colors i want down i tend to try and block out parts of the piece with the base color for that section, and then i start to paint with the colors that i want to go on top of that base color from there.

once im satisfied with the colors/shading/rendering and everything ill go back and look over things and will fix things that look off or sometimes completely redo segments if they dont look right to me. when i was younger and mainly doing digital art using my phone and my fingers i would use a lot of filters and overlays on top of my art once i was done, and honestly im glad to not be doing that anymore because i dont think it made my art look any better. i do color adjustments and sometimes will put on a color overlay or a layer to emphasize the shadows and the light in the piece, but i try to keep those layers to a minimum and like i said before i have a tendency to obsess over the colors and ill spend a good amount of time in the color adjustment tool of clip studio and then ill just decide "actually it looks fine as it is" so yeah!

3. posting

i feel like i dont have a lot to say here gbfm i mean i honestly have a lot of thoughts about the relationship between artists and social media and how social media changes our views on art including our own art and how we can feel like we constantly need to be posting new art and just become content machines churning out new stuff. but ill save that rant for another time. i used to be really concerned about how many notes my art would get when i was younger, and i dont at all blame anyone who still is very concerned about that bc it sucks when u work hard on something youve created and then you dont get a lot of recognition for it, but honestly within the last two years or so i feel like ive begun to have a lot healthier relationship with posting my art. i really just post my art on my art blog, reblog it to my main blog, and then thats that yknow! i do really appreciate any and all support people give me, it means the world to me, but for me having the mentality where i dont need to post all the art i make and i dont need to be posting every day or every week or every month even has been a lot healthier for me because then im not constantly asking myself why didnt this get notes is my art awful??? and yeah i just kind of post it and my brain goes okay were done with that art we gotta make more

ive honestly been struggling a lot with art thru the pandemic and if youre reading this and have been struggling with creating in any way recently or even before the pandemic, please know theres no shame in having trouble creating and it doesnt make you bad at whatever it is u create!

As you walked around town you enjoyed all the different things. The food, items, the people, but most importantly you liked the clothes. Unfortunately, you were too shy to converse with anyone, just watching from afar the way humans interacted. Whenever you felt you had to speak to a stranger your heart started to pound furiously. 

You were willing to leave the busy atmosphere when the rest of your friends arrived. 

“Hey y/n,” Aang said, putting his hands behind his head, clearly relaxed and having a break day. 

You only waved as the rest said their hellos. Growing up you wondered if you were always liked this. Life just changes a person and to your knowledge it changed you for the worse. 

Sokka could point out when you were about to curl up and shy away but when you were with Sokka things were different. You felt free to be yourself, to express yourself wholeheartedly. Sometimes you would catch yourself leaning further and further away from shyness and just having a fun time. 

“H-h-hi Sokka,” you said almost as a whisper. Sokka smiled knowing you were trying your hardest. He motioned over to you and placed an arm around your back. You almost had a heart attack! Sokka knew about your shyness yet he chose to do that, in public! Your eyes shot wide open as you walked awkwardly in that position. 

You all scanned the area, hitting all the stores. Eating whatever, doing whatever until your group ended at the store you really wanted to go in. 

“I hate dressing up,” Toph complained and Sokka glared at her as he turned his head. 

“Really? I love all the outfits and dresses, like look at that one,” Katara pointed to a pink dress with beautiful beading. Aang looked at the attire and then at Katara and nearly almost fainted at the image he processed in his head. 

“Man down!” Sokka shouted as he caught Aang. 

“Y/n do you want to go here?” Katara asked as she hooked her arm with yours. You looked again to the ground and shrugged. You hated when you did that. Katara was your friend, she actually cared for you and she was one of the few people who were there for you during tough times. 

“You know you can always tell me.”

You bit your lip, “you’re ri-right, I can tell you. If you want to go here I am fine with that. Its up to you.”

Katara didn’t know if to take your answer as a yes or no. Sokka saw though your face, the way you smiled and the way your eyes lit up when you saw the store in view. He knew that you wanted to go. 

“C’mon y/n, why don’t me and you go together.”

Katara snorted a laugh, covering her face.

“What? You don’t think I can last in a clothing shop?” Whined Sokka as he flailed his arms around. 

“I’m sorry Sokka its just, I would never think you were the one to want to go into a store badly.”

Sokka looked at you and could see you were giggling but covering your smile with your hand. “Well if y/n wants to go, which I know she does, then I will sacrifice my man hood and go.”

Toph scoffed and muttered, “you mean your boy hood?”

“C’mon,” Sokka grabbed onto your hand and guided you in. 

“Have fun you two,” Aang shouted. 

Sokka stood in the middle of the store, pathetically. He didn’t think this far through. Sweat was practically dripping down his face and back. 

“Why am I so sweaty?” He thought as he wiped his forehead. Was it because he was with you? AND YOU BOTH WERE STILL HOLDING HANDS!

Sokka let his hand unlace with yours so quick you thought there was a bug or something. “Sorry, I forgot to-”

Without a word you took his hand and laced it with yours again. Sokka knew this was tough for you and yet you did it. He almost died as you did that. “Oh...okay.”

“Le-lets look over here,” you took him to the dresses and picked out a few that you absolutely adored. Sokka stared at you lovingly the whole time and even offered to hold your outfits. “I am going to try them on now.”

“Sure!” Sokka followed you and sat on the chair in front of the changing room. The other women gave him a look of disgust as he was sitting where girls change, but oh well anything for you. 

The first dress you tried on was orange. You looked at your reflection as you twirled. 

“What do you think? Can I see?”

“...I hate it,” you gave a gloom face in the mirror. 

“Yeah, yeah, yeah but I want to see it...still,” Sokka persisted. 

You froze up and tried to find a way out. You were too shy, but shy for what? To show him the outfit? You had no clue. 

“Y/n I’ll still think you look beautiful even if you wore a dumpling sack.”

He left the decision open for you, if you wanted to show him you knew how. Time passed by and Sokka thought you changed your mind but you quickly opened the door. In his eyes you looked like a goddess.

“Y-y/n you look-”

“Terrible...I hate this color on me. Onto the next.” You closed the door softly as Sokka waited again. 

Next you tried on a dark green dress, you liked the color but not the style of the dress. “This one makes me look like a-”

“Yes?”

You swallowed and prepared for the shyness, “a...booger.”

You could hear Sokka laughing outside and you giggled yourself. You loved to make not just anyone laugh but Sokka. You opened the door and awkwardly posed for him. 

“A booger, hah! You are the most prettiest booger if you ask me! Now if Katara wore that, she would definitely look like a disgusting, moldy booger.”

You shook your head and chuckled, “your poor sister. I’m going to try on this last one.”

You poured a silky dark blue dress onto your body. It fit perfectly, snug but not too much. The color was captivating, there were some beading on the top only but the rest fell down like a waterfall. It reminded you of where Sokka was from. Feeling less shy you opened the door swiftly. “What do you think about this one Sokka?”

Sokka almost chocked in seeing you like that. “Y/n, you look-” He was captivated by your beauty. You looked almost unreal to him. You almost exploded! He was so close and his ice blue eyes were closing and he was leaning closer. You wanted to so badly kiss him back, kiss him until your lips fell off but you were too shy. You backed away but Sokka held onto you and crashed his lips onto yours. You shrieked but then you placed your hands on his hair, deepening the kiss. Sokka kissed you like his life depended on it, that he needed your kisses for air. 

You two separated and he breathed harshly with you. He realized that you were again shy and profusely started apologizing. 

You placed a finger against his lips and for once said a sentence without a whisper, “its okay Sokka. That was the best moment in my life. I’ve always wanted to kiss you.”
