Molly's Wedding Celebration
FireFighters and Police Officers don’t have it easy. With the difficult situations, long hours and difficulty making relationships last. It all just comes with the job we've signed up for. The one thing that currently came with the job is that we all got a second family.
“So how's the future soon to be Mrs. Halstead?” Brett came over to me while we were getting ready at Will's apartment near Molly's.
Tucking hair behind my ear I chuckled with a bright smile. “I still can't believe he proposed to me at a Blackhawks game of all places.”
“You know you loved it. You've watched the video like ten times in the past two weeks.”
Whipping our heads around we both saw my soon to be husband Jay Halstead leaning in the doorway of the apartment with his arms crossed over his chest. “Jay!” I shrieked overjoyed to see him about to run up to him until Brett jumped in between us.
“What are you doing here? You can't be here. It's bad luck to see the bride before the wedding!”
Jay shakes his head dangling a key in his fingers. “I have my brother’s spare key. Severide only took my car keys. So he doesn't know about this.”
“Well you don't get to keep them. Now get out of here.” Brett stomped forward, snatching the key from his fingers.
I gently grabbed her arm trying to stop her. “Brett, don't. He's okay.”
“But he's not supposed to see you-”
Jay raised his hands up slightly in surrender, shifting his gaze briefly over in my direction. “Technically we aren't doing an official formal wedding. So it shouldn’t be a big deal, Sylvie.”
“He’s right, Syl.” I touched her arm glancing towards the clock on the wall seeing it was almost time when we would be heading over to the bar everyone loved. I was wearing a knee length white dress, my light brown cowgirl boots and my hair was curled on the ends. “We're not doing an official ceremony. Speaking of, I think it’s time we make this happen, don't you say Jay?”
My fiancé smirked, holding his hand out for me to take. “Let's do this, Y/n.”
Jay and I headed over with Brett who held open the door letting us inside the local bar first before she ran over to her spit at the end of the bar that we had our own little ulter built at. Jay dropped his hand from mine going to stand up beside Kelly Severide who had been named his best man since we had allowed his brother Will to officiate the ceremony.
My father moved through the crowd of people offering me his arm once he had reached my side. “Your mother and I wouldn’t have minded to pay for a wedding venue but I must say this feels much closer than that probably would have felt.”
“Molly’s is home for me and Jay. It’s the first place we actually met. So it wouldn’t feel truly us if it was done anywhere else in Chicago.”
My father kissed the crown of my head before we paused at the edge of the stage. “Treat her well, Halstead or I’ll come after you.”
“I’ll treat her right, sir.” Jay held out his hand with my father placing my hand in his.
Stepping up onto the wooden stage with our hands intertwined together we kept our eyes focused on one another. Will came up to us smirking his dorky grin while shifting his gaze from me to his brother before he started performing the ceremony. “Growing up I always thought that I would be the one to get married first, but now I couldn’t be happier to see my little brother to be tying the knot. Y.n, you clearly love my brother enough to become his wife. You have the passion as we all do in this room and you both bring out the best in one another. So can I get the rings to marry these two?’
“We’ve got them.” Brett and Severide each held up one wedding ring, one for me and one for Jay handing them to the older Halstaed brother.
Will each handed us a ring shifting his focus onto me first. “Y/n, do you take this man to be your husband?”
“I do.”
He eyed his brother. “Jay, do you take this woman to be your wife?”
“I do.”
Will put a hand on each of our shoulders letting us slip the rings on the other hand. “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.” Jay takes a step towards me cupping my face in his hands, deeply kissing me.
Wrapping my arms around his neck I deepened the already passionate kiss that he had started. Shortly afterwards we heard loud cheers and clapping from everyone in the crowd telling us that we needed to break the long kiss. Shifting my gaze over to the bar we saw Hermin and Gabby coming out of the back room carrying the wedding cake we had ordered. The cake had been designed to be half police badges and the other half was fireman badges.
“Wow. It turned out awesome.” I gasped in shock walking up to once they had sat it down on the main bar table letting everyone gather around.
Casey came through the crowd holding up my fireman jacket for me to see. “I figured you’d want your new last name on your uniform now.” The jacket was somewhat cleaned and Jay’s last name was now stitched on the back in big yellow letters in the spot where my last name had previously been.
“Thank you, Matt.” I slipped it on over my dress, sending Gabby a smirk since she was holding my bouquet of flowers. “Gabby, let’s do the toss now.”
She handed me my bouquet and dragged Brett over into the crowd with her and all the other single ladies. For a while most of us in both departments have been seeing the connection forming between Brett and Casey so now was the perfect time for them to finally tie the knot after so many years of working together. Turning around I gently tossed it up in the air and the bouquet appeared to be going into Gabby’s hands until she ducked down. “You’re the next Firehouse girl to get married, Sylivie Brett!” I squealed before the flowers got dropped into my maid of honor's hands.
“How long have you been planning for me and Casey to get married, Y.n?” She chuckled with Casey wrapping his arm around her waist.
Jay comes to stand beside me, sending the couple a smirk. “Basically since I asked this one to marry me.”
“Alright everyone, the first round of drinks are on me!” Severide announced to everyone and we all cheered overjoyed to know that everything we had planned had turned out as we wanted it to. Molly’s represented the same thing as our wedding cake did. That all first responders and medical professionals of Chicago have all become a large and loving family.

Two Hearts, One Firehouse
Request: Ohhhh thank you so much 😊 It would be an idea where you're Kelly Severides half sister and on duty at Ambulance 61, but also having a crush on Gallo and vise versa but Kelly does not approve. So the mood between you both is not the best as he doesn't want you to be one of his girls. So as the ambulance one time gets in an accident and 51 comes to your rescue, Kelly notices how worried Gallo is and how he wants to make sure your okay. So Kelly gives him a chance and he finally asks you on a date and it's all fluffy ? Hope that's okay 🩷
Pairings: Severide!Younger!Sister!Reader x Blake Gallo
Warnings: inaccurate medical talk, car crashes, hospitals, angst, fluff, blood, cursing
Masterlist
You had lived with your mother and your half brother, Kelly Severide, you had the same mother but different fathers. That did stop the two of you being like full siblings with him being a month older, yes you were the younger sister of Kelly Severide. Your step-father had decided to adopt you so you took on his last name. You loved your family and you stuck beside Kelly most of the time. You and he were similar in more ways than one and it was a little scary. So similar that you both had decided to go through the same career paths, though you went paramedic route and he went firefighter route and later to squad. You always loved helping people. You loved it so much that you had decided to make a career out of it and you haven’t looked back since. It started when you were on the way home from school and had passed an accident and so you helped them and that is where the spark started and it grew. You both were lucky enough to go through the fire academy together and had each other for support and once you graduated you both were lucky to get the same firehouse.
When you started to work for Chief Boden at Firehouse 51 with your brother you made fast friends with everyone but then again that is just who you are and you wouldn’t change it for the world. You really became friends with your fellow Ambulance 61 crew, first it was Gabriela Dawson and Leslie Shay and then it was Gaberila and Sylvie Brett. You loved them all and was devastated about what happened to Leslie but you put on a brave face and moved on. It was the same with your brother, he loved her just about as much as he loved you but she didn’t swing for his team, and you both had each other to lean on. You welcomed anyone who had come onto it no matter how long they were staying there. Gabriela Dawson, Sylvie Brett, and you became the second dream team on Ambo 61 after Gabriela, Leslie, and you.
While you made fast friends with everyone at the firehouse there was one person in particular that you had fallen madly in love with and you could say the same for him. Who is it you ask? Blake Gallo. The tall, dark haired, brown eyed, handsome, male that worked with your brother on Truck 81 when he was there before Squad. Kelly liked Blake and thought he was a good guy but when he started seeing how Blake looked at you and they way you got all happy and smiley he knew something was up. You see, Blake didn’t have a good dating history, he had several fling and an ex-girlfriend and when he did get in a relationship it seemed like it didn’t last long it was over, Kelly didn’t like that. He also didn’t like that he was trying to make moves on you while doing it with another girl. You and Blake hung out a lot especially with your brother and other friends down at Molly’s, a bar for first responders and other guests are allowed to be there but it is mainly a hang out for first responders.
Currently everyone was out at Molly’s celebrating a successful shift and to just relax and have the weight of the days melt away and it worked so well. You and Kelly had just arrived at the bar since you both lived together and you both rode together. “Oh man am I ready for a drink.” You said eyeing the bar and all of the alcohol and your brother chuckled.
“You can say that again. Just make sure you don’t drink too much. I don't want a repeat of what happened on your birthday.” He said and you grimaced. You, Sylvie, Gabriela, Stella Kidd, your brother’s girlfriend and your best friend, and Natalie Manning, Will Halseatd’s current girlfriend and your friend, Hailey Upton, Jay Halstead’s partner and girlfriend, and Kim Burgess, Adam Ruzek’s partner and girlfriend, had partied way to hard and several shots were taken and after several more drinks and several more bars a very drunk you were being dropped off to your brother at your guys’ apartment. That night was filled with very drunk talk about anything and everything, especially about your crush on Blake and lots of time in front of the toilet. You tended to tell the truth when you were drunk. You ended up passed out in your brother’s arms on the bathroom floor and after a while he carried you to your room and held you all night and was there when you got sick.
“Never again. That was so bad.” You said and he chuckled and side hugged you and kissed your temple which made you smile and lean into him. You both then spotted Jay and Will, Connor Rhodes, Antonio Dawson, Hailey, Kevin Atwater, Kim, Adam, and Gaberila and several of your other friends and you made your way over to them. “Hey guys!” You said and they looked up and smiled.
“Hey!” They all said and each and everyone hugged you and the night started.
“How long have you all been here?” You asked taking a seat beside Jay.
“Not long. We were about to get a pitcher for the table. You two want in?” Connor asked
“Yes please.” You and Kelly said at the same time and everyone laughed. It was not an uncommon occurrence for you both to say things at the same time.
“Why don’t you come with us?” Hailey and Kim said to you and you nodded because you knew the real reason, they wanted to gossip without the boys.
“Count me in.” You said and followed them to the counter. You flagged down Stella and you told her what you wanted and then the three of you were left to chat.
“So… how is it going with you and Blake?” Kim asked and you looked at her.
“What do you mean?” You asked
“We’ve seen how cozy cozy you both have gotten with each other.” She said and the others nodded.
“There is nothing going on. He doesn’t like me like that. Besides, he has a girlfriend.” You said and they smirked.
“You keep telling yourself that but there is definitely something going on. He also just walked in and it seems to me that he is looking around for you.” Hailey said and that had you spinning around and saw him and when his eyes met yours and he smiled which caused you to look down and blush.
“Ohhh he is walking over here.” Kim said with an edge in her voice and she smirked.
“No he is not.” You said and Hailey smiled.
“Yes he is and he is here.” She said
“Hello ladies. How is it going?” He asked and you looked up at him, his eyes on you the entire time.
“Doing good. Just grabbing a pitcher and taking it to the table.” Kim said and pointed over to the group consisting of the boys. “Wanna join?” She asked and he shook his head.
“No thank you. I’m meeting some of the guys here.” He said and pointed over to a table you had become so quiet and your cheeks felt like they were on fire. Stella came back with the pitchers and glasses and Blake’s drink choice.
“You guys go on. I’m gonna hang out here for a minute.” You said and they smirked but you had yet to break eye contact with Blake. Stella took that as a hint and brought you your favorite beer choice.
“Don’t have too much fun.” Kim said and you nudged her and they laughed and walked on.
“You look beautiful tonight.” He said and you smiled “I mean you look beautiful everyday.” He said rambling.
“It’s ok I get it. You only see me in uniform and my hair up.” You said looking down as he took a seat next to you.
“Either way you still look absolutely gorgeous.” He said. “How are you?” He asked and you looked up unaware of how your brother was watching and glowering at the back of your guys’ heads.
“I'm doing good. Last call was a little nerve-wracking but we got through it.” You said as you took a drink of your beer that Stella had set in front of you silently and smirking as she did so. “You?” You asked and smiled.
“Been doing good. My day gets better every time I get to see you around.” He said and you blushed and looked down making some hair fall into your face. He slowly reached over and tucked it behind your ear his touch sent electricity through your body and you found yourself leaning in to him. It was no secret that you liked, no loved, each other and had major crushes on each other.
Meanwhile Kelly was fuming and everyone was smirking. They knew how protective he was over you. “Look at them. They are way too close to each other.” He said, taking a drink of his beer while watching you.
“Oh come on Kelly.” Jay said while taking a drink and then began talking again “They are so painfully in love with each other that it's almost cringe worthy watching them.” He added and everyone nodded in agreement.
“Well I don’t like it.” He said, pulling a pouting face.
“Why?” Will asked and he turned to him.
“He is only going to break her heart. I don’t want that for my sister. I hate seeing her upset.” He said and they all smiled.
“Your sister and Blake are madly in love with each other and the flirting says so. I don’t think I’ve seen him with another girl since he broke up with his last one in the beginning stages of him being at the firehouse.” Matt said and Gaberila nodded. “Do you trust your sister?” He asked and immediately Kelly nodded.
“1000%. I just want her to be hurt. She’s been hurt in the past and it took such a toll on her. If I wasn’t there I don’t know what would’ve happened to her.” Kelly admitted.
“What happened?” Connor asked
“She was in love with a guy and they seemed to have loved each other. They moved in together and got engaged. They were going to get married. On what was supposed to be their wedding day I found him and her best friend, your bridesmaid, hooking up and I really mean fucking in their room on their bed. I was furious. I chewed them both out and pretty much made them tell her what had happened. It took a toll on her, it sent her into a depressive state but she never did anything to hurt herself but that doesn't mean I wasn't worried. I was there every step of the way until she got better and lots of therapy. It took her awhile to get over it, I don’t think she got totally over it until we started working at Firehouse 51. She was scared to let herself get attached or date and as big brother I promised I would protect her at all cost.” Kelly finished, eyes focused on the two of you.
“What happened with her ex-fiance and ex-friend?” Hailey asked and Kelly looked at her.
“They got engaged a month later and married a year later. They had the decency to send her a save the date. She didn’t end up going to the wedding and as far as I know they haven’t tried to contact her.” Kelly said.
“Oh that is horrible. What are their names?” Adam asked, the entire Intelligence crew and Med crew grew to love you and treat you like a sister and a daughter to Hank Voight and Alvin Olinsky, before he passed away.
“Tyler Wattson and Ana Hopkins.” Kelly said, taking a drink.
“Didn’t we just have Tyler start working at Med?” Connor asked Will and he thought about it and nodded.
“We did. Just about two weeks ago. But he took vacation just a couple of days ago for a month” Will said “He seemed like a nice guy but now that we know the truth it makes us look at him differently now.” He added and Connor nodded. The rest of the night Kelly watched you and Blake talk and laugh together and what really grinded his gears was that you both were flirting with each other.
“Alright that is it. I’m calling it a night.” Kelly said and threw some money down to pay for half of his beer and then stalked over to you without saying goodbye to the others. “Y/N, we are leaving.” He said and you looked at him.
“I’m not done here. I don’t want to go yet.” You said, Blake could see a fight about to happen.
“Hey, I’ll make sure she gets home safely.” He said and Kelly looked at him for a split second.
“Fine. I’ll see you at home, Sis.” He said and hugged you and kissed your temple and you leaned into his hug.
“I’ll see you at home.” You said and then watched as Kelly stormed out of the house. “What is up his ass?” You asked and Blake shrugged.
“Who knows. Let us finish out the night together.” He said and you blushed and nodded.
“That sounds like a perfect plan.” You said and that is what you both did. By the time you both were ready to leave it was 12 AM and Blake was putting money on the counter to pay for his and your drinks and then he was throwing an arm around you and leading you outside to the Uber he had called since that is what he took here and the both of you have been drinking and in no shape to drive. The Uber drive to yours and Kelly’s apartment was super quick and filled with small talk and giggling. Blake told the driver to wait and he nodded and Blake walked you in and up to your apartment. “Thank you for a good time tonight.” You said as you arrived at the door and he smiled.
“Anytime.” He said and then you were smiling and blushing while looking down. You opened the door and stepped inside and shut the door. You turned around to find Kelly there.
“Holy shit.” You said “You scared me.” You said as you took in his appearance he wasn’t smiling and he had his arms crossed. “What is wrong?” You asked.
“I don’t want you hanging out with Blake anymore.” He said and you looked at him.
“Why?” You asked
“I don’t want you to become one of his flings, Y/N/N.” Kelly said and your mouth fell open.
“I’m not going to become one of his flings.” You said starting to get defensive.
“He has done it before and what makes you think he won’t do it again?” He asked
“People can change. I haven’t seen him with a girl or heard him talking about a girl since he started at 51 and you should know guys at the station don’t care who overhears their conversations. I love him, Kels. Why can’t you expect that?” You asked
“I’m just looking out for you and want what is best for you. I don’t want you to become one of his girls that he sleeps with and then puts out to the curb. I’ve seen how your last relationship did to you and I don’t want that to happen again.” He said and that made you freeze. How dare he bring that up?
“I can’t believe you would bring that up. Yes Tyler was an asshole for doing that to me and yes it sent me into a depressive state to the point of needing therapy. But I’ve learned from my mistakes and that situation. I can take care of myself and I love that man. Why can’t you see that?” You asked and before he could respond you threw your hands up and then back down “I’m done. I’m going to bed to get a good night’s sleep before our next shift. Goodnight, Kelly.” You said and stomped off brushing past him.
“Y/N/N.” He tried but knew nothing could stop you. He sighed and went to the couch and turned on the TV to a random game and watched it for a few before going to bed. He checked in on you before going to his room and falling asleep.
The next morning you were gone before he even woke up and that saddened him. He hated when the both of you fought and this fight could’ve been avoided if he kept his damn mouth shut but he was your big brother and he needed to protect you, that was his job. He sighed and got ready for his shift. When he arrived at the station he parked next to your car and got out and then he heard your laughter as he got out and he looked up smiling but then it fell when he saw who you were with. He was angry but then he saw how happy you were and that slowly died down. You spotted him and your smile turned into a frown and glare then you flipped him off and you pulled Blake into the firehouse and that made Kelly upset but he was an asshole so he deserved it.
—---------------
You and Blake had been having a relaxing talk outside of the firehouse in the morning. He was drinking coffee leaning against the wall and you were leaning against the opposite wall. You both were talking, more like flirting, with each when you looked up you saw that your brother had pulled and your smile turned into a frown and then a glare. You flipped him off and then pulled Blake into the firehouse. “Everything ok?” He asked.
“We had a fight and he pissed me off. I'm not talking to him right and besides he brought up some stuff that shouldn't be brought up.” You said and he nodded.
“If you want to talk about it, I'm here.” He said and you looked up smiling.
“Thank you, that means so much to me.” You said and he smiled.
“Anything for your pretty face.” He said and that made you blush furiously.
“Gallo!” Herrmann called out and the both of you looked up and he was waving him over to him.
“Looks like you're being summoned.” You chuckled and he turned back to you smiling.
“Seems like it. Talk to you later?” He asked and you nodded.
“I would like that.” You said and he smiled and then headed off before he got into trouble. Now you were left alone. You were alone until you heard your brother's voice.
“Sis.” Kelly started and you turned around glaring.
“What?” You asked and his eyes saddened.
“I wanted to apologize. I shouldn't have brought up your past. I trust you I do. It's just my job as a big brother-” He said but you cut him off.
“By a month.” You said
“Yes, by a month. But it's my job to protect you. He just has a reputation and I don't want you to get caught up in it or be another girl that goes onto his list.” Kelly said and you could see where he was coming from.
“I get it. I do but you did something so unforgivable. I like him, Kels. Why can't you just accept that?” you asked and after he didn't answer you sighed and shook your head and walked away. You avoided him for most of your shift and most of those times you were on calls, which was great for you because that meant you were away from Kelly. While on calls and you weren't trying to save a patient or driving you were on your phone texting Blake. You and he had given each other your numbers that morning before Kelly showed up.
Finally, you were back from your latest call. You could let a sigh of relief out. When you started to get out Kelly was there and before he could say anything or you say anything the bells were rining signaling for Ambo 61. You groaned but got in the driver's seat once again and set off. “This is what our 12th call since the start of our shift?” Gaberila asked and you nodded.
“Seems to be that way. It must be a full moon tonight.” You said chuckling.
“It must be. Let's just hope this one is easy.” She said but as you pulled up she regretted those words.
“Or not.” You said and looked over at her it seemed to be gang related or a hit attempt. “Alright let's do this.” You said and put the ambulance into park. The both of you got out and headed towards the scene. “Paramedics coming through. Please move.” You said and most people, which were bystanders, moved. You and Gabriela looked at each other and then she was getting to work trying to wake the man up.
“Sir, can you hear me?” She asked the man to mumble something and it was so quiet that you could barely hear. You then began to look around and spotted someone on the phone and waved them over.
“Sir, can you tell me what happened?” You asked and he looked like he was shaken up.
“We were just walking to the store when a car came out of nowhere. They pulled a gun and pointed it out the window and shot him. My brother used to be in a gang but he got out and snitched and now he has a bounty on him.” The man told you and you nodded.
“What is your brother's name?” You asked
“Kenny Hills. They were driving a black Toyota Corolla.” He said and you nodded.
“Thank you for the information. We will try to get him the help he needs.” Storing the information to tell the police. “Do you want to ride with him?” You asked and he shook his head.
“No, I'll meet you at the hospital.” He said and you nodded.
“Ok, we will be taking him to Med.” You said and he nodded and took off. Something seemed off but you needed to tend to the patient. You walked back over and relayed the information to Gaberia. Early you had brought the stretcher over and now you both worked to get him up and on it. Once you both did that you loaded him up in the ambulance but you couldn't help but notice a suspicious car parked a little bit away. When he was loaded you and Gabriela got in and you started to speed off. “How are we looking?” You asked as you drove hurriedly down the roads with sirens blaring.
“He's stable and breathing. He's lucky that we got to him in time.” She said
“Good.” You said as you drove.
“What's going on?” Kenny asked as he started to wake up.
“We got called saying that there was a man unconscious with gunshot wounds.” Gabriela said.
“Oh man, they actually attempted it.” He said
“What do you mean?” You asked
“I was in a gang but they started doing things I didn't agree with and I had done some things that I'm not proud of. So, I turned myself in. I took a deal that if I ratted them out I would be clear but would have to do some community service and I agreed. They found out and started coming after me, family, and friends. They stopped for a while until today.” He explained
“We can get the police involved and get you into protective custody.” You said
“You think that would work?” He asked
“Yes-” You began but was interrupted by a car slamming into the driver’s side of the ambulance and a scream was heard. You don't know if it was yours or Gabriela's. Pain erupted throughout your side as the ambulance was pushed sideways. The truck still accelerated and it started to tip the ambulance to the side. “Keep him safe.” You told Gabriela.
“I got it.” She said and then the truck backed off and slammed into the ambulance again and that made you hit your head and the world go black.
The ambulance had overturned and rolled, sending Kenny and Gabriela all around the place, but they were unharmed. You on the other hand were pinned and glass had impeded in your skin and in your stomach. The seat belt was cutting into you and blood was running down your temple and out of your nose. You were also barely breathing but it was labored and it would come out later that your lung had collapsed. “Y/N are you ok?” She asked but got no answer. She moved as best as she could to get a look at you and saw that you were unconscious.
“How is she?” Kenny asked and Gabriela looked at him.
“Not so good. How are you?” She asked, moving and wincing in pain.
“I’m ok. You?” He asked
“I’m in pain but nothing to worry about.” She said and then there was a noise and the back doors were being opened.
“You son of a bitch you were supposed to die.” A man said he was covered in blood and he was limping. Kenny moved Gabriela behind him and grabbed anything closest to him which happened to be scissors.
“Well it looks like you didn’t do a good job. Clearly I’m still alive.” He said and then a fight broke out. “Go tend to your partner.” Kenny said to her and she nodded and moved as best as she could. The fight was continuing.
“Y/N? Can you hear me?” Gabriela asked but you didn’t answer. “Please be alive. I can’t have your brother killing me.” She said and started to do an assessment of you. “It’s going to be ok. I’m going to call Kelly.” She said she was about to get the phone when Kenny appeared he was covered in more blood and physical wounds “Are you ok?” She asked.
“I’m ok.” He said
“What about the other man?” She asked
“Taken care of.” He said and she nodded “What can I do to help?” He asked.
“Find gauze or anything to stop the bleeding. She’s cut bad. I just hope everyone is on their way.” She said as he set to work. Then suddenly the smell of gas leaking filled their senses and they looked at each other.
—------------------------------------
“Truck 81. Rescue Squad 3. Engine 51. Battalion 25. Car crash. Overturned ambulance and possible fire. Multiple injuries.”
The bells and the voice came over the intercom and Kelly’s heart sank. “That can’t be. Can it?” Kelly asked Stella as they got ready to move.
“Let’s not think the worst.” She said
“It’s not them. It’s not.” Blake said as everyone loaded up into their vehicles and moved out. The vehicles were silent as they rushed to the scene. “Stella, what are the chances it’s Y/N?” He asked his friend.
“A very good one. They never checked in and they never made it to the hospital.” She said and Blake’s heart dropped.
“I can’t lose her. I love her.” He said and she smiled at him sympathetically.
“She’s strong. She's Severide. Nothing is going to stop her or bring her down. Y/N grew up with Kelly and that takes some guts. She’s going to be ok.” She said trying to keep spirits high but right now she wasn’t too sure herself. They arrived at the scene and everyone was silent, they eventually pulled together and Chief Boden started to give orders.
“This is so bad.” Herrmann said
“They’re going to be ok.” Otis said “They are both strong.” He added just as Gabriela crawled out of the wrecked ambulance and came over to them. Other firehouses had been called because they needed more ambulances.
“It’s bad. There is blood everywhere and she is unconscious.” She started off.
“What happened?” Kelly asked
“We were transporting a patient, his name is Kenny Hills, we suddenly got hit and it sent us sliding. Then we got hit again by the same truck, I’m assuming. Someone came in and they had back and forth and he told me to go and take care of Y/N so I did. He’s in there now stopping the bleeding. He was an ex-gang member but he’s a really good guy.” She said as she got medical attention. Kelly nodded as did everyone else and then they got to work.
“Alright Rescue Squad 3 start getting her out safely. Truck 81 and Engine 51 start getting that gas under control and get that truck out of here.” Boden said and everyone let him know that they understood.
“Geez.” Cruz said as they walked up to the accident.
“What happened Y/N/N?” Kelly asked as he saw you, his sister, unconscious on the steering wheel.
“Alright let’s get going.” Capp said and everyone began to work. “You must be Kenny.” He added looking at Kenny and he nodded.
“She didn’t even deserve this. They were after me. The other guy is in the back.” He said
“Is he alive?” Kelly asked
“If he is then he is severely wounded.” Kenny said nobody else spoke. They got Kenny out and transferred and then they got to work on you.
“Alright, we take this nice and easy.” Kelly said and everyone nodded and so it began. You had been unconscious the entire time not making a sound.
“How is she doing?” Blake asked as he appeared and a few others started helping out.
“Not so good.” Kelly said and Blake pulled a face that Kelly couldn’t see.
“Kels.” You spoke softly and everyone jumped.
“I’m right here, Sis. What hurts?” He asked
“Everything.” You moaned out “Kels, I don’t feel good.” You said and slowly cracked your eyes open to look at him.
“It’s ok. We got you.” He said
“Just take it easy.” Blake announcing his presence.
“So tired.” You mumbled
“No no. You’re not giving up on us that easily. You need to be here to help people.” Kelly said as they got the door off and started to cut your seatbelt off and Blake caught you before you could fall. They started to pull you out but being trapped under the steering wheel you yelled out.
“Fuck, stop!” You yelled out as they started to move you out.
“What? What is wrong?” Blake asked
“I’m trapped. Something is digging into my leg.” You said and they took a look and there was a piece of metal in your thigh piercing an artery.
“Ok ok we take this slowly.” Kelly said to you and everyone else around. That is what they did and they got you out safely and then your breathing became wheezing. “Stay with us.” He added as they loaded you into an ambulance and headed to Med. Kelly insisted on riding with you and nobody was going to say otherwise.
“Kelly, I’m sorry.” You said and he looked at you.
“For what?” He asked stroking your hair.
“Everything. Everything I put you through. This.” You said
“This is not your fault. You hear me? This is not your fault. Everything you put me through was sibling love and I gave it right back.” He said and you nodded as best as you could and then you were arriving at Med and the doors were opening to reveal Connor and Will.
“Hey Y/N/N. You doing ok?” Connor asked
“Hurts.” You said and he nodded.
“We got you.” Will said and then your eyes were rolling into the back of your head. “Woah, ok. Let's get moving.” He said and Connor said and they were wheeling you back to surgery leaving Kelly in the waiting room watching the door you just went through. Not even 20 minutes later 51 was rolling through the doors.
“Kelly?” Stella’s voice came through.
“They took her back 20 minutes ago and they haven’t been back out. She, uh, she passed out before they even got her in here.” He said
“She’s tough. She is a strong woman. She will pull through this.” Otis said and then chuckled “She is a Severide, stubborn.” He added and everyone chuckled and Kelly actually cracked a smile.
“You got that right.” He said and then walked over to a wall and leaned up against it with his head down.
“Kelly.” Blake said and Kelly looked up.
“She is strong. I’ve never met a strong woman before.” He said and Kelly could see the pure panic mixed with heartbrokenness in his face.
“Do you like my sister?” Kelly asked
“I more than just like her. I love her, Kelly.” Blake said and tears came to his eyes. “I don’t know what will happen if something happens to her. She’s changed me for the good.” He added. “She’s the best.” He finished and Kelly could tell he was telling the truth.
“I believe you. I’m willing to give you a chance but if you hurt her and I mean if she comes crying to me, and she will because I’m her big brother, because of something stupid you did, I will make your life a living hell. Don’t fuck it up.” He said and Blake nodded.
“Absolutely. I love her too much to hurt her.” He replied
“Good. I’m holding you accountable.” He said and Blake nodded and before they could say anything Connor and Will were walking over to them and Blake turned around and everyone gathered.
“She’s stable but it was touch and go but she is alive and in recovery. She has 2 cracked ribs, a fractured wrist, a collapsed lung, a broken nose, and we had to go in and repair the artery in her leg. We almost lost her but she is a fighter. She’s going to pull through. She’s going to need a lot of physical therapy but we think she can return to work in about 6 weeks.” Will said and everyone nodded “You can see her now but limit to two people.” He added and everyone knew that Kelly and Blake should go and so that is what they did. They followed the two doctors to your room and let them be. The two men walked in and you were just waking up.
“Kels?” You asked and he smiled and walked over and sat down.
“I’m here, Sis. Blake is here too.” He said and you smiled and looked over at him.
“Hi.” You said quietly and he smiled.
“Hi.” He said and sat down taking your hand.
“Gabriela and Kenny. How are they?” You asked, looking at the both of them.
“They’re doing good. Kenny is not in trouble. They were brought in before you.” Blake said and you nodded and you groaned and blinked slowly.
“I’m going to let the others know how you are doing. I’ll leave the two of you alone.” Kelly said getting up and kissing your forehead and then walked out of the room leaving you and Blake alone.
“Y/N,” Blake began looking at you and you looked at him “I love you. I have ever since I laid eyes on you. Yes I know I was a playboy but then I saw you and wanted to change all of that and I did. You’re the only I want and you’re the only girl for me and I want that to be forever. Your brother has already threatened me so you don’t have to worry about that. When you get released will you do me the honor of letting me take you out on a date?” He asked and you smiled and nodded.
“I would love that. I love you too. Ever since my ex-fiance cheated on me with my best friend and started working here I didn’t think I would find anyone else and I would die alone but you walked into 51 that day and everything changed. Suddenly my world was right and there was light again. You made me laugh and I mean really laugh and smile and you can ask Kelly or anyone else. So, yes I would love to go on a date with you and hopefully one day become your girlfriend and maybe even something more.” You replied and he smiled.
“Can I kiss you?” He asked and you smiled and nodded.
“Absolutely.” You said and he got up and leaned down and connected his lips to yours. Sparks flew and you knew you found the right one. You both only pulled apart when you heard someone coming down the hall and he sat down. It was Kelly and everyone else, despite what Connor and Will told them but they knew it would happen, they all greeted you and while chit chat was made you and Blake stole glances at each other and smiled but then was pulled back into conversation. You were happy and alive. You couldn’t wait for that date.

Welcome to my Ted Talk where I discuss how Sylvie Brett is NOT a SLUT!!
She was engaged to Harrison who emotionally abused her wanting her to fit into this doting wife lifestyle and so she left him and pursued her career as a paramedic.
Joe and Sylvie start off as friends and I think was initially draws her to Cruz is that he was different from Harrison so they give a relationship a try but figure out they are better off just friends and this is where we get the beautiful friendship of Joe/otis/Sylvie
She then has an on again off again related with Antonio but he’s in the middle of divorcing his wife so it ends up being messy. Which she knew going into it but she liked him so much she wanted to give their relationship a try. In the end they were at two different places in their lives and called it quits for good.
Her next relationship is with Kyle who is a good guy and someone she could have seen a life with if it didn’t change who she was. He wanted her to become a chaplains wife and stop being a paramedic which is something she’s good at and loves doing. I also feel like she ran from Chicago thinking it was the best thing after Otis died. There was so much pain but then she realized how much she missed the people who had become her family.
Grainger was someone she liked but in the back of her head she couldn’t get Matt out of her head after what happened in 9x02. She wanted it to work with Grainger but her feelings were too strong and Grainger picked up on it.
This is Matt’s spot officially like after I love you but we’ll come back to him later.
Dylan never made any sense to me why she decided to date him. He was the guy she wanted to move on from Casey with but after seeing Matt unexpectedly the feelings were brought up again and then she decided to adopt Julia so Dylan stepped away after noticing how she hasn’t moved on.
Now we are at Matt. Sylvie didn’t sleep with Matt the minute that the divorce was finalized and some people acting like that happened is preposterous. They didn’t even kiss until SEASON 9 and even then Sylvie was thinking about his relationship with gabby by asking the question “if she came back would you leave with her” because she didn’t want to start a relationship with him if there was any chance of him still holding a candle for Gabby. Guess what? It was Matt that tried to fix things after that because he wanted Sylvie. It was Matt that chased her into the street to tell her how much he loves her and no one else. And yet I don’t see any of them placing any blame on Matt. It’s always “sylvie skank this” or “sylvie wh0r€ that”
If we’re counting that’s 7 guys in the span of 12 years. That’s normal. Sylvie didn’t sleep her way through the firehouse and she isn’t the backup plan because Matt can’t have Gabby. I’m sure Gabby is happy in Puerto Rico doing things that she loves and maybe she found love herself. Matt and Sylvie are happy together and sometimes you end up finding who you were meant to be with under your nose all this time but needed to grow as separate people to figure that out.
In conclusion Sylvie Brett is not a slut. Please move on.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

What are some of your best and worst Brettsey moments?
What are some moments that inspire you to write or make you write because things need to be changed?
What are some storylines you wish the show had exploded with Matt and Sylvie as individuals and Brettsey?
Or times when the writers could have gone deeper?
Is there anything you want to write but feel apprehensive about or feel like you can't get it right?
Now that the Caseys have left Chicago I can answer this one. 🥺 Been saving it.
It’s so hard to narrow down BEST moments. I love the “You’re a little extra that way” conversation, Sylvie’s confession of feelings from 9x16, their love scene from that same episode, the first kiss in 9x02, and the eye contact at Molly’s from 9x02 as well. There’s more but those are the first ones that come to mind. Of course now I have to consider the BEAUTY that was their wedding ep which gave us SO MUCH. Their vows were perfect. Making out in the turn out room, also perfect. Sylvie escaping/running for her life and Matt tackling the guy and holding Sylvie for dear life after, again perfect.
As for worst, I’d say anything out of character. Matt’s 10x22 “I don’t know” always makes me mad because there’s no way someone who loves Sylvie as much as he does wouldn’t reassure her in that moment. The way the break up was orchestrated in 11x01 with Sylvie comparing her relationship to Violet’s or Stellaride’s or even Kyle’s, Matt and she not talking for two weeks — all of it felt forced and weird. Sylvie doesn’t normally compare herself to others like that and Matt wrote Sylvie a LETTER and put it in the mail in S10 when they kept missing each other. I’d say those.
I think a lot of what inspires me to write is less things that need to be changed and more things that need to be explained. Like the break up in 11x01 and Matt’s “I don’t know” in 10x22. Both those things made me want to dig in and take something that feels OOC to me and elaborate on it. That happened to me in S9 a lot. I wanted to really explore their perspectives, thoughts, traumas, and emotions in a way TV just doesn’t have a lot of time to do.
The biggest one for me is the trauma that resulted from Arnow. Matt’s guilt over Sylvie being hurt and Otis. Sylvie’s grief over losing Otis and exploring that grief as part of the reason she didn’t realize things with Kyle wouldn’t work sooner than she did. I feel like there was some excellent material there that could have been mined for them. The other one, that I was convinced the show was saving for the dating Brettsey era that we never really got, was meeting Brett’s birth father. After everything she went through with Julie, how would that go? Would he be as lovely as Julie was? How would Matt help her through it?
Times when the writers could have gone deeper for me is always going to be exploring trauma. I wanted to know more about Matt’s relationship with his dad. We saw Nancy and we heard about his dad from her but what were Matt’s memories like? How did he remember him? Also why didn’t Christie share Matt’s opinion on their mom or see the abuse? Was their dad partial to Christie? And for Sylvie, I wanted to know more about Harrison and Hope and how that dynamic shaped a young Sylvie. Harrison and Hope were clearly the gaslighting types and if those people were her childhood best friend and high school sweetheart then there must be more emotional abuse that she didn’t reconcile until after they were gone. I also would have liked to have actually met her parents or her brother.
As far as things I want to write but can’t, I have had an idea for a regency Brettsey AU FOR YEARS. I am not great with historical fiction/romance though so I’ve never seriously attempted to write it. But man do I want to. I think it would be full of so much yearning and tenderness.
Hopefully I answered all the questions you had! I LOVED THESE QUESTIONS. My favorite part of writing fanfic of these two is trying to get inside these people’s heads. They’re complicated and loving and generous but also have experienced great tragedies and faced abuse from people they loved. The fact that they find solace and safety in each other is breathtaking to me and so well deserved.

Prompt: “You’re a bad liar did you know?”
Set during 8.01
Her life kinda feels like one of those times when you’re coming out of anesthesia. You’re awake and aware, but completely out of control over what you say and do.
Plus, it takes a while for everything to feel right again. That’s how it feels to live in Fowerlton with her fiancé.
She feels off, but somehow not at the same time. It’s confusing and she misses 51 so much. She misses her people.
“Slutty or sophisticated?” Stella asks over the grainy video call. Sylvie can barely see her since the loft is so dark and the connection from Indiana to Chicago sucks.
“Always slutty,” Sylvie laughs, sitting up against her headboard. Kyle had a work trip so it’s just her alone in their bedroom. She’s nestled under the scratchy comforter in an old band t-shirt and her not so attractive readers.
(Yes, she needs glasses to read really small print. It’s not something she fesses up to, but it’s Stella so who cares?)
“You’re so right,” her friend agrees, snagging a tight deep blue dress with a high slit off the hanger. “The whole point is to make Kelly drool.”
Severide’s yelling in the background about not being able to find the shirt Stella likes.
“It’s in your closet! Do you need cataracts!”
“I can’t find it!” Severide yells back.
Her friend huffs and leaves the bedroom, taking Sylvie along to stare at the ceiling fixtures as she navigates into the living room.
Sylvie’s thrilled her best friend is finally happy with Severide. Her friend is obsessed with him and it’s good to see them both on the same page.
The way Stella talks about him is absolutely nothing like how she talks about Kyle. He’s a great guy, yes. He’s so kind and giving. In some ways, she thinks he’s perfect for her, but something is missing.
The tension. They just don’t have that. She’s tried and tried to generate some heat, but it’s cold as ice. She imagined herself with a man she wants to jump right then and there.
“Hold your horses! I’m coming!” Stella hollers and Sylvie laughs. Those two will be driving each other crazy in a nursing home one of these days. “Here, talk to Brett, Casey.”
What?
Stella’s glamorous face moves out of view. Did she say she was going to give the FaceTime to Matt?
She looks horrible. She didn’t even fully take her make up off and she put on a few of those pimple patches around a few blemishes.
“How do I…” Matt’s face comes into view, clearly lounging on the couch. He grins a little when he sees her on the screen. “Hey, stranger.”
She covers her face. She’s not super vain, but she’s not sure she wants Casey to witness her before bed look.
“Oh god, Casey. I look ridiculous!” She chuckles behind her hand.
“I doubt that,” he replies. “Come on, you’re really going to hide your face from me?”
Yes. She’s protecting this false narrative she’s created that she has good eyesight and never forgets to comb her hair.
“Trust me, you don’t want to see this Sylvie Brett.”
“Try me.”
Ugh, he’s just so smooth.
Oh no. No. She’s engaged. She’s marrying Kyle which is what Casey wants for her. She buried her stupid budding feelings for him months ago.
She’d hide her face all night, but that also means she can’t see his. She’s not sure that’s worth it.
“Fine. Fine,” she mutters. “No laughing.”
“I swear.”
She moves her hands away from the work in progress that’s going on with her face. Now that she can see her phone too, Casey looks ridiculously good in an objective way.
He’s tanner and even the pixelated version of him quickens her heart rate. Her Fitbit physically alerts her about it.
Kyle doesn’t do that to her.
“You look adorable,” he compliments. “I like the glasses. Whether you believe me or not, I like the natural Brett.”
Kyle suggested she put on a little more foundation before meeting his parents. Granted, he didn’t out right say that because he’s too nice, but he implied it by suggesting she should wear more.
Here’s Casey, telling her he prefers the most unattractive version of herself.
It doesn’t mean anything. She’s just losing her mind.
“I think you have bad eye sight.”
“Says the one in glasses.”
She laughs a little too hard at that which makes him chuckle too. She’s missed this lightness. Fowerlton feels heavy.
Matt shakes his head with a little laugh once she’s done giggling. “It’s weird without you here Brett. Really weird.”
It’s weird in Fowerlton too.
She shifts in bed, cuddling into the overly fluffy pillow Kyle picked out. “It’s weird without you guys too.”
His gaze softens a little and she sees a hint of sadness grace his face. “How’s your arm?”
She knows he blames himself for what happened. He doesn’t have to admit it for her to know. He carries the weight of the world on his shoulders.
She wishes she could reach through the phone and comfort him, but it’s probably best she can’t. The last thing she should find herself doing is touching Casey.
“It’s perfectly healed,” she murmurs, suddenly super tired. Lately, she’s been quite the insomniac, but it’s like all she’s needed was Matt’s voice and his kind eyes to fully realize how tired she is. “How are you doing?”
He reads the sleepiness right off which isn’t hard since she keeps letting her eyes flutter closed. “I’m doing okay.”
She hums, eyes closed. Her brain paints this image where she’s not alone in her fiancé’s bed. She’s in the loft on the couch with her head on Matt’s shoulder.
She doesn’t correct her stupid brain out of sheer exhaustion.
“Sylvie?” He asks.
She nods, replying on auto pilot. “Yeah?”
“You’re clearly tired.”
“No, I’m not,” she protests, forcing her eyelids open. She doesn’t want to fall asleep but there is something so calming about Matt.
He chuckles. “You’re a bad liar did you know?”
She is a bad liar. She knows she is but she’s too content right now to defend his assumption.
She can hear Stella’s enthusiastic voice on the other end edging closer. She’s asking something about which heels she should wear, but Matt tells her to quiet down.
She hears small murmurs and creaking leather. It almost feels like she’s right back in Chicago with her eyes shut.
“Goodnight, Sylvie,” Matt whispers and then the call disconnects. She cracks one eye open to plug in her phone and then curls up to sleep.
She misses Chicago.

To See Your Photo When I Wake Up
I’ve been thinking of my fav three lately and I wanted to give them some fluff. This was inspired by @queer-it-up-bingo — OTP and @monthly-challenge — Sunshine. You can read it under the cut and on Ao3 here.
Fandom: Chicago Fire
Rating: General Audiences
Pairing: Sylvie Brett/Joe Cruz/Brian "Otis" Zvonecek
Tags: Canon Divergence, Established Relationship, pDomestic Fluff, Huddling For Warmth, Polyamory
Summary: Joe and Brian wake Sylvie up early on their free day to show her something very special.
Wordcount: 1.1k
Also created for: @fandombingo | Sylvie Brett + Reverse: 1999 Edition | It’s Coming / @multifandom-flash, r2 #2003 | Bunnies for Cuteness + r2 #2005 | Piggyback Cute / @eclipsingbingo | Huddling For Warmth
Hugging her bunny plushie tightly so as not to lose it between the sheets, Sylvie rolled over herself to change her position with the idea to enjoy her free day staying in bed for as long as her body let her.
That usually worked on the second free-day between shifts, but on the first one her working clock told her it was time to wake up, and made sure her partners were also awakened before leaving for the firehouse, around seven am.
Not today, she thought to herself, relaxing again and trying to focus back on what she was dreaming about before she had brightened up. And then came the whispering at the other side of her door.
It was weird that Brian and Joe were up before her, so Sylvie opened an eye and reached her phone, wanting to check what time it was. Minutes past seven in the morning was what the numbers on the screen told her, so her only wish quickly turned to be that nothing terrible had happened to have her partners up that early.
She stayed alert out of curiosity, trying to figure out what they were talking about until she heard her name. And then she knew they were up to no good.
If this was happening a few months back, her fear would have been that her boyfriends were having another disagreement about their relationship and dynamics, since living the three altogether and being co-workers didn’t make it any easier for any of them. Sylvie knew that the two best friends held feelings for one another since the first time she met them, and it had taken both men some time to come together and make peace with that. None of them confessed a thing, of course, until she came into the picture and became the glue into their peculiar love triangle, bringing them closer than they’d been now that they didn’t hide anything that their hearts felt. For this reason, Sylvie was afraid of being the focus of any argument and being a threat for that friendship they treasured so kindly.
As the low voices continued, she thought of getting up but didn’t as she heard the door to her room being silently open.
“Sylvie,” Joe whispered as he approached her bed. She pretended to be asleep, testing the waters to see what it all was about. “You think it’s a good idea to wake her up?” Joe then said over her; Sylvie figured out Brian was at the other side.
“She can’t miss it!” Brian responded but not in a quiet tone.
Curiosity was taking the best of her, so she made herself be noticed. “Miss what?”
“Okay, how long have you been awake?” Brian asked with a smirk, she got to see thanks to the light in the living room coming through the door when she rolled over to be on her back.
“Since you started whispering on my door five minutes ago,” Sylvie told them.
“Sorry about that,” Joe said with a closed smile, and then threw a deadly glare to their boyfriend, who just rolled his eyes.
“I’m not apologizing, you started it! But I’m doing something better.” He sat down on her bed, leaning to kiss her still sleepy face. “Let me carry you to the living room.”
“Can Geogie come?” she questioned, raising a teasing eyebrow as she asked about her bunny plushie.
“Georgie is always welcome to join us,” Joe nodded, bowing with his arms folded to serve as support for Georgie.
Sylvie got out of the sheets, handing her beloved friend to Joe and then climbed on Brian’s back. His hands were warm where he kept her secured over him, leaning forward as not to lose his balance with the new added weight. They walked outside her room, and Sylvie realised she didn’t get to find out what the discussion was about and only knew where they were heading. “What’s in the living room?”
“The first sunrise of spring!” Joe explained with a huge smile, rushing to be the first one to reach the couch that was not in the place it was usually at.
She frowned, confused because from their apartment’s level they usually couldn’t see the sun coming out, but perhaps that was the reason why her boyfriends were that excited about it (and up so early, too).
Brian left her in the middle of the couch, which was turned to face one specific window of their living room, and had the coffee table accommodated around it as well.
“We’ve made coffee, and hot chocolate for you,” Brian told her.
“It’s early, so make sure you don’t get cold,” Joe warned. He gave her Georgie back and picked up one of the blankets that were over one of the arms of the couch.
Sylvie hugged her bunny while she let Joe lay out the blanket over the both of them. Brian served two big cups of coffee, one for Joe and the other for himself. After passing Sylvie her favourite mug, that was shaped like a koala, with the steamy drink that welcomed a great day she was looking forward to spending with her partners.
She snuggled with Joe, getting under his arm to keep the warmth between them, and then opened her own for Brian, after some sips of his coffee, to get comfortable over her.
The sun came up in the horizon, as slow as Joe played with Brian’s hair, who was more relaxed than Sylvie had lately seen him. She held him tightly with one arm, watching the sun rays hit their window and light up the scene at the other side of the glass while she enjoyed the hot chocolate. It was Joe’s secret family recipe that he only made for special occasions, so that had to be one of them.
It wasn’t long that she had moved to Chicago, but time had started really counting for her when she moved in with ‘Crotis’, as Joe and Brian called themselves. The first sunrise of spring was something she hadn’t paid attention to in the past, due to having been living alone when it occurred. Now, in the quiet of the home she had built with the man she was in love with, Sylvie welcomed the experience of sitting front row for the nature show her partners had been kind to share with her.
She would thank them for insisting on renting that place in particular, reasoning that the views were incomparable, later; when they woke up from having dozed off between caresses and soft kisses.

Brettsey + tattoo
A quick and dirty one
.
There were certain unspoken rules about life in a firehouse; never mention the ‘q’ word, always put a fresh pot of coffee on, and keep your eyes to yourself in the locker room.
Living and working in the firehouse for twenty-four hours at a time already meant a distinct lack of privacy, even without taking into consideration the communal sleeping and shower areas. So when changing out in the locker room you keep your eyes front, you don’t look sideways, and you make good friends with the locker door in front of you.
Which is why Casey will go to his grave saying his first glimpse of Brett’s tattoo was a total accident.
He’d been staring at his locker door at the end of the shift, trying his best to not think about their last call. He wasn’t even sure what made him look over, if she made a noise, if he caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of his eyes; he wasn’t sure why he looked over because he hadn’t even realised there was anyone in the locker room with him.
But he did look over, doing so unthinkingly, and in doing so caught a glimpse of creamy skin, a strip of white lace, and a collection of clean, black lines inked into her skin, before he jerked his gaze up and met Sylvie’s wide eyes.
Spinning back around to face his locker, Casey coughed and shook his head, trying to wipe away the image of her long bare legs and that little tattoo on her hip bone for his own good.
“Sorry, I- I’m sorry.”
Sylvie gave a forced giggle, clearly trying to lighten the mood. “It’s fine! Not like you saw anything. Not that you were-”
She broke off and Casey idly wondered which one of them was blushing a deeper red.
“I have to admit I hadn’t taken you for a tattoo kind of girl.” Unthinkingly, Casey went to glance at her again before snapping his gaze back straight.
Sylvie laughed again. “It’s fine, you’re safe to look. And yeah, you’re not the first person to say that.”
Sensing a story there, Casey slowly turned to face her, trying not to notice the pretty pink fading from her cheeks.
At his questioning glance, Sylvie fiddled with her watch band, but explained. “You remember my friend, Hope? Well, right after we graduated high school she got it in her head that she wanted a tattoo. She dragged me and my ex, Harrison, along when she got it done and they both kept making these jokes about how it was something I would never do. And I guess- I guess I was young and wanted to prove them wrong.”
“So you got a tattoo,” Casey finished, smiling a bit at the thought of a younger Sylvie, that fierce look on her face, a few strands of hair escaping her bun, determination written all over her. “What is it? I didn’t quite-”
“Oh, it’s a cat,” she said, before carefully peeling down the band of her pants so he could see. “Nothing too badass, I’m afraid but-”
“I like it,” Casey said, stepping closer. The tattoo was made of a few clean, black lines, with a little heart for the nose. So simply Sylvie, that he had to smile. Without thinking he reached out to graze a thumb over it and told himself he wasn’t imagining peeling down the lace of her underwear and pressing a kiss to the skin there.
“I like it,” he said again, voice dropping an octave, and told himself that the shiver that passed through her had nothing to do with him.

Chicago Fire Season 5 Ep. 6 "That Day"
Dawson hits a pedestrian while responding to a call. Casey and Severide investigate an arson. Boden decides whether to attend a function in New York. Casey puts Herrmann at the helm for a shift.
If you want to watch the series for yourself, stop reading! This post contains spoilers to the storyline.
Sylvie knocks on Detective Antonio Dawson's door. She takes the beer and says she's a good girl, talking about all the good things she's doing. Antonio asks if she's waiting to get married. She says no. She takes off her coat and is naked underneath. They hook up right away. Brett says she likes him, and he says he likes her too.
James goes out for breakfast with his stepfather, Chief Wallace Boden. He is asked about his future and whether he wants to be a firefighter. James is told the CFD is great family. He should think about joining. Boden brings James into the firehouse, where Christopher Herrmann is excited to see him. Boden says James is here to see if this is what he wants to do for a living. Herrmann says he might get a big promotion. Gabby Dawson asks Lt. Matt Casey to put in a good word for him. Casey says he'll watch him on the truck and see what happens.
Severide wants to talk to Casey. Severide is upset that Darren Whitney is upset with the police because they're investigating the fire that killed his wife. Casey says that's their job. Severide said they weren't going to pursue this case. Casey says they must be tying up loose ends.
A call comes in, and Herrmann is put in charge to see how he does. A girl falls through a skylight and glass gets stuck inside her. Brett and Dawson are trying to get to the scene, but no one is paying attention to them. Dawson hits a pedestrian. Herrmann is taking care of his patient and still asks for an ambulance. Dawson and Brett are helping the man they hit. They hear that he has to take a sobriety test. Gabby is upset, but Brett says it's routine.
Casey cuts the metall off the girl, and Randall is upset when they're told they still have to wait for the ambulance. Herrmann orders them to load her up and transport her. Otis objects, but Casey says they have an order to follow.
Gabby takes a breathalyzer, which is clean. Her boss orders a urine test. Stella Kidd and Herrmann tell Chicago Med's Maggie Lockwood that they brought in the patient themselves. She says it was the best way to save the girl, but forms still needed to be filled out.
Casey asks Brett where Gabby is. Brett says Gabby is with Chief Hatcher, and the victim is in a coma. Casey wants to sit with her, but Mouch says only a union rep can be with her. Casey tells Mouch to stay with her. Brett tells Casey Gabby is in shock. Gabby snaps at Chief Hatcher and tells him what happened. Before it gets out of control, Chief Boden calls Hatcher out of the room. Gabby is shaken, and Casey rushes in. Hatcher says Gabby needs a lawyer. Boden asks if the CFD will support her.
Gabby returns to the firehouse, where she is greeted and hugged. Gabby says she should say she's okay, but the pedestrian is critical. Mouch calls the union. Herrmann says they know she was right. She leaves the room, and Casey chases after her. Before he leaves, Severide says, "The truth always comes out for the innocent." They disagree about what happened in the fire last week.
Boden is in his office yelling at the phone that they don't treat their own this way, as his stepson James watches. Boden asks Connie to cancel the trip to New York. Mouch says there's a lawyer in the firehouse taking pictures. Gabby says the dents and scrapes are from six months ago. Gabby asks the pedestrian's son to talk, but the lawyer says, "Don't address my client again!" Gabby gets angry and asks him what he called her. Boden asks what's going on. The lawyer hands Boden a paper to sue the CFD. Casey tells Gabby to calm down and let the CFD handle it. He says they'll get through this. Gabby gets a call from her brother Antonio.
Herrmann calls Casey into his office. He asks about Gabby. Herrmann has questions about the report and Casey helps him. Gabby gets off the phone and tells Brett her brother said hello. Gabby asks about them hooking up, and Brett tells her to distract her.
Boden calls Casey and Severide into his office. He says an accelerant was used. Severide says Darren didn't kill his wife. Casey says there must have been a timing device, but Severide says it was never found. Boden tells them to stop and start acting like leaders. He wants their reports with signatures by tomorrow.
Herrmann and Mouch are leaving. Herrmann says he needs to go through sensitivity training to get the promotion. Mouch asks why he wants this. Herrmann says he thought he was supposed to. Herrmann gets a call. Chief Walker wants to see him tomorrow.
Joe Cruz is training James on the ladder. Boden asks how things are going. Cruz says James would rather be anywhere but there. Gabby and Casey meet Antonio, who tells them about the man suing Chicago Fire. The pedestrian Gabby hit has been suicidal before and will do anything to get a paycheck. The son has nothing to do with the father and hasn't seen him since he was 10.
Casey leaves to meet Severide at the fire scene. They disagree over the husband's responsibility but find interesting burn patterns. Casey gives up and tells Severide to write the report. He will sign it, and he leaves. Severide finds something controlled by an app on your phone. He agrees with Casey that the fire was arson. Severide finds the internet cable connected. Casey was right.
Herrmann takes Mouch to his meeting with Chief Walker. Mouch asks if he can come with him. He says they've been riding together a long time and wants to stay with him.
Herrmann goes into the meeting excited but learns that he has to sign that he is liable for taking the girl in by firetruck instead of waiting for an ambulance. Herrmann is upset. He did the right thing. Chief Walker tells him to take the hit. Herrmann says he*ll do it like Gabby Dawson. The Chief threatens him. Herrmann doesn't hold back. As the yelling escalates, Mouch just shakes and hides his face.
Severide, Casey, and the fire investigator arrive at Darren's hotel room. They find out Darren is leaving. Severide tells Darren they know about the app on his phone. Severide says he can't help. Darren says he was trying to help them out of debt, but didn't know his wife would come home. When he saw her car, he went inside to save her. Chicago P.D. arrests him.
Herrmann asks Boden about James. Boden doesn't know. He tells Herrmann that Chief Walker says he's unfit to command. Boden asks what he did this time. Herrmann says he spoke the truth. Boden says that isn't always wise. Herrmann says he's there to work not make decisions.
The firehouse gets a call about a girl trapped between a truck and a fence. The fence is crushing her, so Boden decides to save her with manpower. Severide sits with her as the crew pulls the truck upright. He tries to free the girl. Severide gets her out of there. Casey says he did a great job.
Gabby asks Brett to wait. Gabby goes to the room she hit a pedestrian in. The son orders her to leave, but she gives him a paper to read first. It was a suicide note. She tells him he needs help when he recovers. The son is shocked. Gabby says she tried to help his father.
Chief Boden decides not to go to New York when his friend Tom asks him why. Boden tells him to mind his own business. Everyone in the firehouse sees what's going on. Tom hands Boden a letter. As he leaves, he tells Casey and Severide to get him to New York.
Boden shows James a picture of the firefighters who helped on 9/11. He tells the crew about meeting New York firefighters and how they kept digging. He admits that after all the digging, he didn't find anyone, and he felt like he failed them.
Casey and Severide take Chief Boden to the memorial site in New York City. There are children playing and laughing. Boden says that hope can be found if you look for it. Boden looks at the memorial and says, "All this time, the answers were right there." "The future is here!"

Tonight apparently was the night Matt decided to throw caution to the wind. He opened his mouth and he had no idea if he was prepared to hear what Sylvie may say. Matt knew Severide was trying to put him out there; the long nights at a sports game, or the bar but why was I partaking in these outings. Did I necessarily want to sleep with a random women? No it wasn’t me. Hallie was important to me, someone I was building a life with; engaged to. And now she was gone; she got caught in the crossfire of my war of morals with Voight.
And I was hurting still; it’s why I didn’t read the lines until tonight or allowed my heart to feel that attraction I felt for Sylvie. She was a friend; a close friend. And we hung out like friends do but when I fell from the house and upside down I saw the fear on her face. It pulled at my heart and I knew she was brave, attractive, she made me laugh, smile and forget the pain when I was with her. But was I ready to have the hard conversation; the one my mouth just opened us to?
Matt pulled himself up into a sitting position against the edge of the couch. His hands rested comfortably against his knees as he shut his eyes suddenly asking himself why didn’t he opt to have a beer… but seeing as neither of us made eye contact you could silently feel that tension in the air. And the male watched her place his plate of food down on the smaller table where his knees brushed again. Fingers pulled at the cornbread plopping a piece in his mouth. Letting the bread swallow down as he waited for the blonde to come sit with him. Matt didn’t want to hurt her; but he also felt he was in no state to reciprocate the feelings even if he did see the female as more than a friend.
Head bent down purposely as he listened to Sylvie talk. Did he suspect she had feelings for him? Yes it was in her actions when he had a cut on his head from a close call with death even when no redness, no bump was present she tended to go more overboard than listen to his own senses. But Matt didn’t know what he expected here; does he be true to himself or allow his heart to continue to heal.. Lifting his head up until how blue hues met her own with a softness to them. “ Sylvie..” He started deciding it was best to be honest no stringing along between two friends. “ I care about you a lot. And I think deep down I always felt it but even tonight when I realized I liked you as more than a friend I don’t think I was ready for it, I don’t think I’m ready for it yet. But know that door isn’t closed.” It wasn’t it was wide open for when the timing was right; When I was in a place to be the guy for Sylvie Brett. But our friendship was solid I wasn’t going anywhere. “ You’ve got me always okay.” A soft smile ran over his lips in reassurance for her and our bond.

Matt Casey had closed himself off to the idea of getting close to anyone again. Not after losing Hallie. Her death had haunted him. She was once the love of his life; the woman he was planning a life with, and suddenly she was gone. And he felt like it was his fault. He was the one that wanted to go after Voight; the dirty cop and as repercussions his girl got the burn. Casey never forgave himself for that. He carried the weight of her death with him for years.
Through all my impatience, all the pain I’ve felt there was one person who never made me feel guilty for what happened and that was Sylvie. We hung out off shift; we would grab a bite from time to time. She was great friend; but recently I started to experience the notion that it could be more. The way I felt when her eyes were on me, the way I found myself letting my glaze linger after her. I had realized I looked forward to seeing her; it felt familiar and safe for me to keep these pent up feelings to myself. I knew in house romances tended to fizzle out; it was about the chase, to who you could be with. And once you realized the spark was a fleeting feeling the relationship fizzles out. And Sylvie I couldn’t open that can of worms when I was unsure if what I was feeling was real. Last night I had tossed and turned with the idea all night. To say Sylvie kept me up all night was an understatement. I knew what Severide would say; he’d say go for it fuck the consequences Because he was all about the risk and gain philosophy. But i liked to play it safe; so all I could do was act normal.
Wear a smile, and pretend like my eyes weren’t aching to close. I spotted the blonde at the back of ambo; she looked like she was adding supplies; or doing her own morning inventory. I had walked until I paused besides the ambo, I had offered a smile; it was cute the way she jumped before turning to face me.
“ Looks like your morning has been eventful. “ Words echoed out; as he heard the story of all the christmas decorations gone wrong; I had to laugh at the humor of it. Christmas was a joyful time, all the lights, the music playing in the background; Herrmann made use we felt the spirit; I could already hear the christmas music playing in the house. It was nice; to feel that sense of home here at the firehouse. “ Remind me never to attempt to set up lights on my own. I might need you to stop by as standby ensure I don’t get tangled up.” A joke; but of course the female kenw she was always welcomed to save me. There’s no one else I’d count on.
Last night; my plans, a drink with Severide; we chatted, got a beer or two, Stella was there and one of the single ladies; which meant Severide was attempting to set me up for the holidays; I had to roll my eyes at the memory. “ Unless you count Severide trying to tell me I need to date again nothing too out there.” Causally saying the words; or perhaps I was testing the waters; see if the blonde cared; I suppose this is when I’d have the answer if this relationship was worth the risk.

SYLVIE DIDN’T often try new places to wash away the day, but for some reason, for some very odd reason, she was trying somewhere new tonight. And right now, right now she was certainly regretting it. The paramedic in charge didn’t know what it was, but as she sat there, drinking her cocktail, she couldn’t help but feel like someone was watching her. Looking around, the blonde spotted a man getting closer and closer. Downing the rest of her drink, Sylvie looked around the room, spotting another woman by herself. Letting out the breath she was holding, Sylvie made her way towards the other woman, greeting her as if they knew each other before throwing her arms around the other blonde “This guy is being creepy and stalking me, please just go WITH IT.”

You Always Come First- Matt Casey
Featuring Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd, mentions of Chief Boden.
Authors note: This is a decently long fic, which I had to stop myself from writing more of since sickfics are kinda my jam. Anyways, I hope you enjoy it!
Warnings: fever, vomiting, anxiety, hints to sex and bathing together
~~~~~~~~~~~~
You have been working on Ambos for years as a floater, but finally landed yourself a permanent spot on 61 about three years ago. Working with Sylvie Brett was the easiest transition you have ever made, but she wasn’t even the best part about being on 61. Having your family at 51 was a close second, but Matthew Casey makes your decision worth while.
Now, after having been best friends for two years and dating for about a year, you and Matt have finally settled down in an apartment in the same building as Kelly and Stella. Not that you guys hated always having either Kelly or Stella around when you were at Matt’s or having Sylvie around when you were at yours, but you both did enjoy the privacy. Wink. Wink.
The move to the apartment was relatively easy. Matt’s stuff didn’t even have to be boxed, and the whole fire house helped move your stuff from your apartment a few blocks over. The hardest part for you was the decorating and rearranging. You love interior design and would do it as a side job if you didn’t run the paramedicine program with Sylvie. After thinking life was going back to normal after almost a month of getting settled in at the new place, you got a rude awakening by your body.
One morning, around 5 am, you gasped awake after a nightmare. You immediately knew something was wrong, seeing as you never wake in this manner and you haven’t had a nightmare since you and Matt started dating. Matt woke with you, being jerked into consciousness by your body.
Matt flipped over, turning on the bedside lamp before looking toward you. “Baby. What’s wrong?” Matt asked, putting a hand on your sweat soaked back. You had your face hidden in your hands, which made Matt assumed you were crying as you shook under his palm. “Sweetheart. Hey. You’re sweating. Look at me.” Matt coaxed in a gentle voice, trying to pull you into him.
You shook your head, letting Matt pull you into his lap and immediately hid your face into the crook of his neck. “The light. It hurts.” You whispered, clutching onto Matt’s bare shoulders.
“You’re burning up.” Matt murmured, pulling you firmly into his arms before he slowly stood, walking toward the bathroom with you. Matt left the light off, using the light from the lamp as he sat you down so that he could rummage around for the thermometer.
“I-I don’t. I don’t f-f-feeeel g-good.” You stuttered, shaking harder as the cool granite counters touched your underwear clad butt.
Matt sighed and pulled you closer into his body as he kept looking. “I know baby. Hang on for me.” Matt muttered, trying to concentrate on where the thermometer was stashed. “Tell me what hurts.” Matt cooed, leaving a quick kiss on your forehead.
You wrapped yourself tightly around your boyfriend as you took a proper inventory of your aching body. “Ummm. M-my head. M’ tummy. A-and m-my t-throat.” You sniffed, turning to sneeze into your elbow. “‘M stuffy.” You whined, pouting as Matt turned to look at you.
“Found it. Open up.” He whispered, caressing your cheek as he placed the thermometer under your tongue. “God, even when you’re sick you are still the most beautiful person I have ever laid eyes on.” Matt whispered, leaning in to kiss your nose.
You scrunched your nose and leaned away, giving Matt a look. He knew that look was a “Are you serious?! You are gonna get sick too!” Look, but you also knew he didn’t care. While you both waited, Matt grabbed a few bottles out of the cabinet and placed them on the counter to see what he was working with.
The thermometer beeped, causing Matt to pull it out before you could even begin to move for it. “102.6.” Matt sighed, clicking his tongue. “No good baby girl. You feeling up to anything to eat so that we can give you some meds?” Matt asked, putting the thermometer into the pocket of his sweatpants before pocketing some meds he thought might help.
“Meh. C-cold n n-nauseous.” You whimpered, leaning into Matt and hiding your face again. You haven’t been sick in years, let alone nauseous with a high fever. You never did do well with throwing up, completely terrified of doing it yourself, but somehow comfortable helping others with it.
Matt nodded and picked you up. “Okay. One thing at a time baby. How about we put some leggings on and we can get you a thin blanket?” Matt suggested. “That way you are covered up, but you aren’t retaining too much heat. Your fever is already pretty high.” Matt reminded, sitting you on the edge of the bed closest to the closet.
You nodded, looking up at your boyfriend with tears in your eyes as your lip quivered. You always got extra emotional when you had a fever, so you weren’t too surprised with the same thing happening to you as an adult.
“Oh baby. Don’t cry.” Matt whispered, pulling you in for a hug and then kissing you firmly on the lips.
“N-no! You, y-you’ll get s-sick!” You wailed, trying to push Matt back, but failing miserably with your weakened state.
“I don’t care. I don’t like seeing you cry baby.” Matt said, reaching up to wipe the tears from your face. “Shhhh. It’s alright. I’ve gotcha. What’s got you so upset?” Matt cooed, trying his best to gently coax the information from you.
You shook your head, looking down as you fiddled with your hands. “F-fever. Emotions a-all-always run h-high wh-when ‘m sick.” You stuttered, looking up to see Matt’s reaction.
Matt just smiled sadly, leaning forward to peck your lips again. “Okay Angel. I understand and that’s okay.” Matt reassured, rubbing your arms. “Let’s just get you as comfortable as you can and then I’ll call Boden to get us alternates.” Matt said, leaving no room for you to argue as he stood and walked to your drawers for your leggings, though you still tried.
“I can t-take care of m-my s-self!” You tried to exclaim through your stutters, though you knew you were not going to convince him otherwise. “T-they n-n-neeed you.”
Matt laughed and shook his head, coming back with your pants in hand. “Like hell I’m leaving you like this. You can’t even stop your chin from quivering since this fever has you shaking so bad. You can’t say a full sentence without it coming out as a stutter right now.” Matt pointed out, kneeling to pull your legging on for you. “I’m call us BOTH out and that’s final.” Matt stated, pulling you up to help pull your leggings completely on before lifting you up again.
“F-fine.” You said, trying to sound indignant and defiant, but it came out as more of a feeble whisper.
Matt chuckled and shook his head. He knew you wanted him there, but you weren’t going to admit to it right now. “How about some apple sauce and Gatorade? Then you can take your meds and we can nap or watch a movie or something. How’s that sound?” Matt asked, sitting you down on the kitchen counter as he moved about to get the supplies without waiting for you to answer.
You hummed your reply, nodding slightly to show your approval. You watched as Matt moved, admiring the way the muscles in his back flexed as he moved around, getting butterflies in your stomach ever time he looked over to check on you, and absolutely adoring the way he made sure to get every single thing you would need, including the puke bucket you learned to keep stashed after one too many accidents from the guys from 51 or intelligence after a night out at Molly’s.
Matt somehow managed to balance all the supplies in his arm and let you latch onto his hip like an infant all at the same time. He carried you and everything else into the living room, tossing the supplies down on the couch before adjusting you onto his front so that he could sit. Once he was settled, he emptied his pockets onto the couch as well, taking his phone out and pressing a few buttons before putting it to his ear. You took the apple sauce packet and opened it as he spoke.
“Good morning Chief.” Matt started. “I know it’s early. I’m so sorry to wake you, but Y/n is extremely sick. We will both be needing alternates.” Matt said, putting a hand to your forehead. “She’s got a raging fever of 102.6, complaining of a headache, stomach ache, sore throat, and stuffy nose. She’s shaking so bad everything is coming out as a stutter when she speaks.” Matt explained, nodding along as he listened to the Chief. “Appreciate it Chief. Thanks a lot. Will do. Be safe.” Matt replied before hanging up. “He understood and sends his best. He knows you never get sick, and we never call out. He’s pretty worried, but he figured he could pull Violet over and put Kidd in the seat for me today.” Matt explained, picking up a pill bottle and reading the label.
You listened and slightly nodded along, having a hard time finishing your apple sauce packet, but determined to finish it anyways. You sipped slowly and watched Matt with half lidded eyes. You trusted him completely to take care of you, especially seeing that you were in no shape to do it yourself right now.
“You doing okay?” Matt asked, placing two pill bottles in between the two of you as he caressed your sides.
You shrugged, putting the finished packet down on the end table. “Meh. Need a m-minute before mm—meds.” You stuttered, closing your eyes and putting your forehead on Matt’s shoulder. The room felt like it was rocking and it was not helping your nausea at all.
Matt sighed, rubbing your back with one hand while lightly holding the back of your neck with the other. “Shhhh. Breathe for me.” Matt muttered, trying his best to calm the nerves he could feel coming off of you.
You did your best to follow along, fighting the anxiety that was building along with your nausea. You felt like you were shaking to your core, completely losing control of your body as the fever kept rising within you. “M-Matt.” You whined, pressing yourself as close to him as you could.
Matt sighed and carefully shifted you closer. “I know baby. I know. I’m right here. I’ve got you.” Matt shushed, rubbing your back and your sides as a desperate attempt to comfort you. He could feel you shaking even harder now, and he was really starting to wonder if he should call 911. “What can I do?” Matt asked, kissing the crown of your head as he grabbed the thermometer and lifted your (his) shirt, placing it under your arm so that you wouldn’t have to sit up.
“I-I d-don’t n-n-know!” You all but wailed, trying to stop yourself from shaking.
The thermometer beeped a minute later, and Matt had to remember to round up a degree to get your temp right. “103.2.” Matt muttered. “Fuck. Okay. Baby, I really need to go get you a cool cloth. Can you please try to drink some Gatorade and take these fever reducers for me? If you go up any higher, I’ll have to call for an ambo.” Matt asked, leaning down to kiss your head again after he spoke.
You nodded, though you doubted you could keep anything else down right now. “I’ll t-try.” You responded, letting Matt shift you back into the couch cushion before taking the small Gatorade he grabbed for you and the pills. Matt moved the trash can a bit closer just incase, before promising he would be right back as he jogged into the half bath off the living room. You slowly drank the Gatorade and then took the pills before laying back and closing your eyes. You took even breaths and tried to focus on not throwing up everything you just put into your body. You could hear Matt muttering to himself as he tried to calm his panicked mind in order to help you. Just as the water turned on, you felt the coolness of the Gatorade in your chest. You quickly sat up, grabbing the trash can and putting it in your lap before you called out, “M-Matt!”
Luckily Matt heard your voice and turned off the tap. “Yeah?” He called, wringing out the wash rag. He listened and heard the faintest heave before liquid splashed into a receptacle. “Oh shit.” Matt muttered, running to the living room. When he got to you, he quickly steadied the trash can before he swept back your flyaways and placed the cool cloth on your neck. ”Alright. It’s okay sweetheart. I’ve gotcha.” Matt cooed, rubbing your back for a second before he realized that you probably just threw up the fever reducers. He was too panicked at this point to think clearly, so he did the only thing he could think of and called Kelly and Stella. Grabbing his phone from the cushion beside you, Matt quickly dialed Kelly knowing that he would have his ringer on.
“Case?” Kelly sleepily greeted, confused as to why his friend was calling him near 6 o’clock in the morning.
“Kel.” Matt breathed, stopping to shush you as you violently heaved again. “I need Stella. Y/N is really sick. Please.” Matt begged his best friend, letting the panic seep into his voice.
Kelly could hear you through the phone and was shaking Stella awake before Matt even finished speaking. “Alright man. You gotta relax for her. We are coming.” Kelly tried to placate his friend as he clued in a grumpy and half asleep Stella that they were leaving the apartment.
Matt didn’t get to answer before Kelly hung up. Instead, he tossed his phone to the side and focused all his attention on you, relived that you guys had thought to exchange spare keys just incase. “Help’s coming sweetheart. Shhhh.” Matt soothed, pleased to find that you were starting to calm down. The gagging was minimal, but your body had managed to reject everything you put in your system plus some in the 5 minutes since you started puking.
You shakily sat back, sobbing loudly as your body shook harder and the anxiety that was creeping up hit in full force. Just as Matt was putting the trash can to the ground and grabbing a few tissues from the box on the coffee table, Kelly and Stella came barging in.
“What’s going on?” Stella asked, running past Kelly to get to you. She did not like the situation she just walked in on. Kelly made his way to the coffee table, sitting down in front of you and slightly pushed Matt to the side so that he could also get a look at you.
“Well, she woke up abruptly at about 5. She’s got a fever of 103.2, headache, sore throat, stuffy nose and obviously nausea. This is the first time she’s puked. Her fever rose from 102.6 to 103.2 in less than an hour.” Matt explained in a panic, leaving it in the air that he was obviously too panicked to know what to do and he needed help.
Stella nodded and grabbed the thermometer to recheck you as Kelly checked your pulse. “Case, go clean that trash can out. Let us figure this out.” Kelly said, feeling how fast your pulse was racing, knowing you were probably also feeding off of Matt’s worry and anxiety.
Matt reluctantly left, leaving a kiss on your forehead before he walked off.
“103.4. That’s to be expected if she was already running hot and just puked.” Stella said, placing the thermometer to the side before checking you over completely. “Sweetie, you gotta calm down for us.” Stella said to you, breathing deeply as a prompt for you to follow along.
Kelly took your hands and met your eyes. “Hey. We gotcha. Nice and deep. Slow down.” Kelly said, leading you through a breathing exercise. “That’s it. Good girl.” Kelly murmured, squeezing your hands.
Matt walked back in, calmly sitting beside you and placing the trash can on the floor once again. “Whatcha thinkin Kidd?” Matt asked, rubbing your back and taking one of your hands from Kelly.
“Well, she’s still sweating, which we know is good. Means she’s hydrated. Maybe a lukewarm bath to cool her down and then try more meds. Obviously she needs fluids to replenish what she is losing. We still have her stash of popsicles in the freezer upstairs.” Stella said, looking to Kelly to confirm, which he did. “If she gets to 104, call an ambo. This temp isn’t great, but it’s still manageable. Just gotta get her calmed down and cooled down some before trying again with the fever reducers maybe.” Stella said, leaning back to look you over once more. “Hey sweetie. You think you wanna try a bath and try cooling down some before some meds? We can also take you to med if you want.” Stella offered, watching your face but knowing your answer already. You hate needles and would give anything not to have to go to the er for yourself.
You shook your head. “N-no Med.” You muttered, scooting closer to Matt as your breathing slightly picked up.
Stella nodded, putting her hands up. “Okay. Okay. It’s alright. That’s why I asked. We aren’t going to force you.”
“Unless it’s necessary.” Kelly corrected, not wanting to give you false hope incase you eventually had to go. You all trusted each other and he knew you would feel betrayed if the situation took a turn for the worst.
“O-okay.” You whispered, nodding your head as you leant back into Matt.
Stella and Kelly nodded and both stood up. They promised to come back with your popsicles later on and told Matt to call again if he needed to before they left.
Matt sighed and kissed your head. “How about a bath? Hmmm?” Matt asked, pulling you into his lap.
“Y-you t-t-too?” You whispered, digging your face into his neck.
Matt smiled and kissed your head. “Of course. Whatever you want. You always come first.” Matt reminded, kissing you on the head.
out of touch
Pairing: Matt Casey x Sylvie Brett
Requested: yes and yes, by anon
Summary: Matt gets worried when he can’t seem to get hold of Sylvie.
Word Count: 974
Warnings: canon-typical injuries
A/N: Okay, so I had a bit of trouble with getting the words out for this one, so I don’t know how I feel about it but here it is I guess. I just wrote this today, so you know haha.
BRETTSEY MASTERLIST
Matt glanced at Sylvie’s last message to him from a few hours ago.
Out for a call, I’ll call you after.
He’d typed a usual reply but he hadn’t heard back from her. It wasn’t like Sylvie to be out of contact for so long, even when she was on shift. She’d always found time in between to send him a message to let him know that a call went well, as did he. It was a little thing they did now that they found themselves so far away from each other.
Now, Matt was starting to get worried, so he reached for his phone again and dialed his best friend’s number, but even Kelly’s phone rang and rang before the line cut out.
Matt was about to try someone else when Kelly’s name lit up across his screen again.
“Sev.” Matt answered the phone.
“Hey, Casey.”
“I haven’t heard from Sylvie in a few hours, I’m starting to get a little worried. Is everything okay?”
There was a short silence.
“I’m not being weirdly overprotective, alright? She usually doesn’t…” Matt started to defend himself to his best friend when Kelly interrupted him.
“Look, she didn’t want me to tell you in case you got worried but she’s in the hospital.”
Matt froze. “In the hospital like dropping off a patient in the hospital?” He asked, even though he knew the answer.
Kelly didn’t answer.
“What do you mean she’s in the hospital, I thought it was a routine call!” Matt’s stressed voice burst through.
Kelly told Matt as much as he knew - it had been a routine call, 61 had responded to a call by themselves but something had gone wrong and there’d been a collapse.
“She was in a collapse?” Matt shot to his feet.
“Casey, she’s okay. I got her out, alright? But they wanted to keep her in just to be safe, to make sure the concussion wasn’t too serious.” Kelly assured him, although even Kelly knew that it was easier said than done. He’d been in Matt’s shoes before. He still remembered the time he’d got the call that Stella was in the hospital after the car accident, and he’d practically flew to the hospital. At least, he’d been in Chicago, Med was just a drive away. Matt must feel ten times worse.
“Matt, Stella and I got her, alright? I’ll get her to call you.” Kelly assured, before they both hung up.
Sylvie looked up when Kelly stepped in.
“You told him, didn’t you?” She asked, just a little reproachfully when she saw the look on Kelly’s face.
Kelly put his hands out. “Sorry. In my defense, he was already kind of freaking out.”
Sylvie narrowed her eyes at him but sighed. “I’ll call him. I didn’t want him to you know feel all…”
“Casey?” Kelly ventured as Sylvie paused. “It’s Casey.”
Sylvie glanced at Stella who threw a grin. “Exactly, like how Kelly will be Kelly.”
They exchanged a smile and Stella stood. “Call him, and we’ll swing by again later, alright?” She squeezed her best friend's hand.
Sylvie nodded. “Thanks, guys.”
Sylvie watched them walk out before she picked up her phone to call Matt.
Sylvie hadn’t even realized when she’d nodded off to sleep but she was woken by a touch on the top of her head. Part of her wanted to keep her eyes closed because she was sure it was a dream. This was Matt’s touch, and it was most definitely a dream.
But reflexively, she opened her eyes, Matt’s face now swimming into view.
At first, Sylvie thought she was still in the process of waking up, until she realized…
“Matt?”
The worried expression on his face quickly gave way to a smile.
“Sylvie.” Her name passed his lips in tandem with a sigh of relief.
“What are you… You’re…”
Matt just smiled, leaning forward to put his arms around her, his hand going protectively to the back of her head gently. “You okay?” Matt asked.
“I’m… Matt, why are you here? What about the boys? You…”
Matt smiled and turned, just as Griffin and Ben walked in. “It was their idea.”
“Hey Sylvie. Matt was going out of his mind, it was getting a little hard to watch.” Griffin greeted, as Ben just quietly put a basket down on her table, nodding with a smile.
Sylvie smiled, swiveling her head back towards Matt, who reached down for her hand.
“I told you I was fine. I called you to tell you it was a stupid concussion, at least after Severide outed me.” Sylvie said, making a face. “You didn’t have to fly all the way here. I'm only still in the hospital because Chief said I have to stay.”
Sylvie glanced at the clock. “It is literally the middle of the night, how did you even get in?”
Matt smiled and shrugged. “Pulled a favor. I did use to work in Chicago.”
A smile flit across Sylvie’s face and Griffin smiled, dragging his brother out of the room on the pretense of going to get food from the vending machine.
“I was worried.” Matt whispered.
Sylvie just quietly pulled Matt back down into a hug, closing her eyes against his chest. “Can I be a little happy that you guys flew here for a stupid concussion?”
Matt smiled, pressing a kiss to Sylvie’s temple. “You can be ‘a lot’ happy. We’re staying for a few days at least.”
Sylvie leaned backwards to look at Matt, who smiled. “The boys are on break, I pulled my emergency furlough. Their stuff’s already at Sev’s.”
Sylvie raised an eyebrow and Matt smiled. “They’re staying with Sev tonight. I’m going to be here.”
“It’s just a concussion.” Sylvie said, although she couldn’t have been smiling any wider.
Matt smiled back. “And?”
Sylvie shook her head and Matt just leaned forward to press his lips gently against hers.
[I knew I could be a jerk. Trust me, this realization wasn’t news to me, by any means. Thing was though, I didn’t care. I am who I am, and if people don’t like it, that’s on them. Stella though, she was the only exception to that. She had always been a true and supportive friend, so whenever I was a dick to her, I actually felt guilty about it. Today being a prime example of that feeling, since I knew she was showing me support with this whole ice skating plan, and I basically bit her head off about it. I was an idiot, so I knew I needed to do some damage control, so I didn’t screw up the best friendship I had going for me. I thought to myself as Stella sat beside me on the bench. I could see she was surprised to hear me apologizing now, which made sense since I usually wasn’t the one to say I was sorry. Again, this going back to my, I wouldn’t apologize to anyone for who I am, mindset. Regardless though, Stella was important to me, so I didn’t want to blow up what we had with one another] That means a lot to me, Stella. I’d say I don’t know what I’d do without your pain in the ass self, but something tells me no matter how much of a jerk I am, I’m not going to shake you, so I don’t have to worry about it. [I teased; all the while an amused smirk pulled at the corners of my lips. Obviously joking with that last comment] And as far as who Sylvie looks at first, we’ll just see when she gets here. [I added; knowing this was one of those times when we’d both be stubborn as hell, but it was only because of how important we each were to the other. It was our thing, you could say. I thought to myself as I let her injured wrist rest against my leg] Next time though, let’s vote something that doesn’t involve ice, since apparently we’re both like Bambi on skates. [I chuckled lightly as I teased Stella] And hey, on the way back from the hospital, maybe we can pick up some Chinese food or something. [Figuring that will give us something to look forward to after we leave the hospital. I justified as I saw Brett approach. Before I could speak up first though, Stella did; informing Sylvie that she was to look at my injuries first] Nope. Nice try, but ladies first. [I said with a slight smirk before gently pulling the sleeve back, so Brett can see Stella’s swollen wrist] She came down hard on her arm, Brett. I think her wrist might be broken. [I quickly pointed out, but knowing the two of them, they’d end up ganging up on me and still treating me first. Hey, it was worth a shot though]
The need to lighten the mood. The care stella Kidd had especially when it came to Kelly was unmatched. She tended to go overboard when it came to him. She knew he was hurting; she watched him hurt for weeks. He was unmoveable from the couch, from the loft he stayed within those walls. He didn’t want to talk to the outside world; he forced himself to return to work. To keep busy but his broody behavior, his mood swings kept me concerned. I knew Kelly he was the kind of guy that hated communicating how he felt. He wanted to be alone. And Stella on the other hand wanted to be there for him. Even if that kept drinking a beer in silence, or the only sound you hear is a repeat hockey game playing on the TV. But tonight she was bold.
She forced him out of his comfort zone, he was a champ. Kelly could’ve told me no, he could’ve slammed the door in my face. But he didn’t; he held onto my arm and let me drag his ass to the ice ring. It wasn’t like I knew the proper way how to ice skate because I didn’t. I never did these activities growing up. I raised myself; I left my family behind. But I wanted a reason to have fun off shift; I wanted Kelly to smile, to laugh. And not to toot my own horn; but he tended to attempt to smile more around me.
And for a solid few minutes the skating was going well; we stayed close to the railing because there was always the risk of falling. I was no pro and neither was he. But we held a hand on each other; through the small touch I felt that warm sensation in the pit of my stomach. I loved Kelly; but he wasn’t ready nor did I believe he’d ever be. After losing Anna; after losing someone he truly loved; he would’ve fought for. Except the situation was out of his hands. All those spiraling thoughts in my head put on hold as I lost my balance. Crap I thought to myself as I was preparing to face plant on the ice; except when my knees gave out; My face didn’t hit the ice, my face fell into a broad chest; I knew it was Kelly; I had in fact pulled him down with me. I had to squeeze my eyes shut when the impact happened, I heard his groan, I knew his pained mumble. He got the worse of the hit; I on the other hand, my hand had crashed to the ice, I felt the slight ache in my wrist, the twist I knew I twisted it, but I knew Kelly if he had gotten wind that I hadn’t gotten out of this fall unstretched he might ignore his own injuries on my behave. Which was what I didn’t want. Eyes opening once I brushed off the fall, I purposely lifted my hand from the ice that had felt the impact, and I placed it to my side as I used my good hand to press against the ice; to lift my tangled body from his.
I was fine; a small twist of a wrist, and maybe a scratch but nothing I couldn’t handle. I had turned my gaze down to Kelly; rolling my eyes at his I told you so comment.
“ Okay fine, you win, next time we’ll go to a hockey game if that would please you, Don’t you dare scold me for wanting to help you.” Defense; yeah I heard it in my own voice; I wanted to tie my tongue now because now wasn’t the time for us to argue; on my attempt to help Kelly feel okay. My arm had wrapped around his bigger frame; under his back as I tried to lift him into a sitting position. “ Are you okay? Once we’re off the ice, i’ll call Brett to come out here I think she’d on shift tonight.” An access ambo to where we could just get checked out at the hospital. Eyes focused on him; as I stood to my feet; And used all the strength I had to lift the man in my grasp up onto his feet. I could tell he hit his head; and I could tell the pain he was in, but right now we should remove ourselves from the traffic of ice skaters.
Title: I am so tired of everybody leaving
Brettsey
"I'm so tired of everybody leaving..."
Sylvie confesses it to Stella and Violet one night in her apartment when they're in the middle of a girl's night. She's two glasses of wine deep and has to be kept away from a third. She's no longer her happy, sunshine self that she usually is. She's solemn, more openly honest with her feelings, and anxious because Matt had to cancel their scheduled call last night due to one of his firehouse buddies needing his help with something at his house. The news left her sad and lonely, which also stemmed from her imminent period that was due in a couple of days.
Stella and Violet share a solemn look. Stella knows how hard it's been on Sylvie ever since Otis died. Foster left to go back to med school, Cruz moved out, her birth mother passed away, and then Matt moved to Oregon. She had seen how much Matt made Sylvie happy and vice versa, so to see her bright smile start to fade from the realization of the emptiness he left behind was nearly gut-wrenching.
Stella envelops her best friend in a strong and tight hug. She always cherished Sylvie's ability to be positive, even in the worst of times, but not everyone can stay positive forever, not even her.
Stella tells Severide and it's not because she wants her fiance to do something about it. She honestly wanted to talk it out with him and try to see what his reaction would be. Of course, Severide barely gives his take on it. He merely nods and sympathizes with the blonde paramedic.
The next day, Severide calls Casey. He asks if he had talked to Brett in a while. Casey replies that he talked to her a couple of days ago. When Casey asks why he was asking, Severide tells him what Stella told him.
To hear it from Sylvie herself would've been much less painful because it meant that she wanted to talk it out with him, find some common ground, and find a way to work towards a compromise. But, the fact that Severide was telling him, of all people, meant she was trying to hide her feelings from him. For whatever reason, Sylvie didn't want him to know, which was an immediate red flag, and he felt terrible that all of it came out while she was drinking. After he ends his call with Severide, he wonders how long she had felt that way and why she didn't say something to him.
When he tries to call her later that night, she doesn't answer. He thinks maybe she's mad at him but even when she was upset, she always communicated it to him. When he asks Severide about her, he tells him that she called out sick and was probably trying to sleep it off. Matt pinches the bridge of his nose; he hates it. He hates that she feels like everyone in her life is leaving her and to top it all off, she's alone and not feeling well. He looks at his calendar and knows he could cash in his favor for helping one of his buddies with his kitchen remodel.
It's 12 PM and Sylvie is feeling like death itself. Whatever sickness she caught was not being nice and it felt like no amount of medication was going to help. After she forces herself to drink some chicken noodle soup, she goes back to bed with a loud sigh. Somewhere between her sleepy haze and cloudy consciousness from the drowsy medication, she hears her front door open and then Matt's voice.
Matt is on the edge of her bed and his hand is gently smoothing out her hair. "I'm not going anywhere," he softly tells her. Sylvie feels the bed dip and then feels his arms wrap around her. She's so drowsy that she doesn't believe he's there beside her until she wakes up a few hours later and realizes she's enveloped safely and securely in his arms and very comfortable surrounded by his underlying woodsy smell.
Line: "Could end in burning flames or paradise." Location: backyard
Let's go AU again. This time a REAL departure.
***
A magazine is thrown down on the bar top next to Matt. He skims it just enough to read the cover. It's a tabloid. One of those that claims to have inside sources but never does.
CASEY TO RETIRE AT END OF CURRENT SEASON.
"Looks like you're out, old man."
He rolls his eyes and slides the magazine away, a dry grin on his face as he stares down at his whiskey. "We're the exact same age. If I'm retiring so are you, Severide."
"Yeah, but I'm not the face of the franchise," Kelly says, grabbing Matt's chin and smushing his cheeks. "I mean look at this face. They're all obsessed with it."
Matt shoves his best friend and teammate away. "Get off me, jackass."
"Oh, come on, we won! Why are you sitting at the bar brooding like a sad sack of shit?"
He glances over at the rest of his team, celebrating their win with their partners and spouses. Even Kelly's wife is here, partying with them in their coach's backyard, and she's a professional soccer player with her own team to lead.
"I'm trying not to be a downer. You all have people to share our success with, you should enjoy it."
"Whatever, man," Kelly says with a scoff as he grabs Matt's whiskey glass and holds it away from him. "You have us. We're not just a team. We're a family. Come on. Donna invited the new Team Doc. She's commanded you show your face and be polite."
"I'm always polite. It's you Donna needs to worry about. Will you gimme my damn drink back?"
Severide laughs in his Captain's face and hands him back the glass. "You're polite unless you're in a mood like the one you're in tonight."
Donna Boden spots them and waves them over. "Boys, come and say hi."
They cross the yard, toward their head coach and his wife. This backyard is more a special event space than a backyard. Donna had it landscaped specially for team gatherings and it includes a pool, a bar, and an outdoor kitchen. They're invited over a lot.
The closer they get, the better a look Matt gets at the new Assistant Team Doctor. His feet hesitate, causing Severide to bump into his back. "Maybe I should take that whiskey back," Kelly snipes with a crooked smirk. "You alright?"
When Boden said they were getting a new team doctor Matt just assumed the organization would hire another older guy full of dad jokes and football trivia. But no. That's not who he finds waiting to meet them. Instead, it's a woman. A young blonde woman in a blue wrap dress and matching heels. Her smile and laughing blue eyes stun him, keeping his feet glued to the ground.
"Casey?" Kelly asks, shoving him lightly. "You gonna walk or am I leaving you here?"
He shakes himself, forcing his eyes away from the woman’s face. “I’m walking. Just gimme a second.”
He knocks back the rest of his whiskey, leaving the glass on a nearby table. With that out of the way, he shoves his hands in his pockets and finally continues forward. He has no idea what to do with his hands so best to just hide them away. It’s a good plan until Donna goes in for a hug and he can’t refuse without being rude.
“How’s my favorite quarterback in the league?” Donna asks.
He chuckles as he steps out of the hug. “I’m good. Working hard, staying focused.”
“Well, it’s working. Keep it up,” she encourages before passing him to hug Kelly as well. They nod at Boden instead of going in to hug him or shake his hand. “Guys,” Donna starts, walking over to the new doctor and putting an arm around her shoulders. “Have you met Sylvie Brett? She’s our new Assistant Team Medical Doctor.”
“No,” Severide says, reaching forward to shake her hand. “Not yet. Welcome to the team.”
“Thank you,” she tells him, smiling politely. “I’m officially a traitor to my family but I’m happy to be here.”
Kelly laughs. “Not a Chicago fan?”
“I’m from Indiana, so…”
“Yeah, say no more. I understand.” Kelly pats Matt on the back, hard enough to send him jolting forward. That’s what happens when one of the toughest tight ends in football, claps a hand against you with no warning. “And this guy is our Quarterback and captain, Matt Casey.”
She holds her hand out to him as well. Matt stares at it for a long series of seconds, knowing full well his hand is clammy. Why the hell does this woman make him so clumsy and nervous? He discretely tries to wipe his hand on his pants before putting his hand in hers. The minute their fingers touch, tingles shoot up and down his arm. What the fuck is happening?
“Nice to meet you,” Sylvie says before nervously biting the inside of her bottom lip, drawing his stare toward her mouth.
For a moment he pictures biting that bottom lip for himself, but then he realizes he looks like a creep -- continuing to squeeze her hand while staring at her lips. “Yeah, you too. We’re glad to have you.” He lets go of her hand, even if everything in him rebels against the action, and steps back.
“It’ll be nice to have someone with more of a bedside manner than Abrams,” Kelly jokes, referencing Sylvie’s boss and their Head Physician.
“Oh, him?” Sylvie says, waving a hand dismissively. “He’s all bark, no bite. We’ve worked together before. I can handle him.”
“Well, now that we’ve made introductions,” Donna says. “We need to go see to our other guests and check in on the caterers.” She turns to Sylvie with a concerned glance. “Are you okay here?”
“Yes, I’ll be fine. Please do what you need to do,” Sylvie assures her. “I’m sure these guys won’t mind showing me around.”
Boden and Donna leave, hand in hand. Just as they leave, Stella shouts for Kelly from her seat by the fire pit. “Sorry,” he says, shaking Sylvie’s hand one more time. “When the wife calls, I go. If I stand her up then I’m in deep shit.”
Sylvie chuckles and nods. “I understand. Casey and I can manage.”
Can they? He asks himself. He hasn’t managed to pull himself together long enough to say more than a couple of sentences. “Uh, yeah, we’re good. Go spend time with Kidd. She flies out tomorrow.” They watch Severide walk away in silence before Matt motions ahead of him, allowing Sylvie to walk first. “How about we start with a tour? Donna’s really worked hard to make this place feel like a family space for us.”
“I can tell,” she says, looking over toward the small garden and outdoor eating area. “It’s beautiful.”
Not nearly as beautiful as she is, not that he can tell her that.
“So, what brings you to Chicago if you’re an Indiana girl?” He asks.
She blushes and looks down on the ground, suddenly interested in their feet as they walk. “Well, it was either move or let my ex make my professional life a nightmare. I chose to move.” She pauses, eyes wide in shock. “I don’t know why I told you that.”
“Your ex sounds like a class act,” Matt comments sarcastically.
“Yeah, Harrison was a real winner,” she scoffs with a roll of her eyes. “But I’m here now, thanks to Dr. Abrams recommendation, and I can’t wait to get started. I’m excited for new challenges.” There’s a beat where her eyes scan over the length of him and then intentionally look away. “New people, places.”
“You’re gonna love Chicago,” he promises. “It’s my favorite city.”
“Favorite of all time?” She asks, grinning teasingly.
“Of all time in the whole world.”
“Wow, well, my expectations are officially high.”
“If you want,” he offers, shoving his hands in his pockets again. “I could show you around. Give you the official Matt Casey approved tour. I gotta make sure we clear those expectations I set, after all.”
“That sounds wonderful,” she agrees, demurely tucking her hair behind her ears. “We should make it happen.”
“Yeah?”
“Yes, for sure.”
The smile at each other and twin flirtatious gazes meet.
He can’t help but admire the way the color in her cheeks extends down her neck, turning her creamy fair skin a pretty shade of pink. He wants to trail kisses over that path of pink and see where it leads.
Damn, it’s been a long time since he’s had it this bad so fast. He went from depressed and moping in his loneliness to giddy and smitten. The whiplash has his head spinning. Or maybe that’s just Sylvie sending his head spinning.
Something big is starting tonight. He can feel it.
He doesn’t know how it will all end up, but he reckons there’s two options.
Burning flames or happily committed paradise.
He’s willing to roll the dice. He hopes Sylvie is too.
K.
It’s Sylvie’s birthday and he wants to surprise her with breakfast on shift. He’s missed out on holidays while in Portland so he does his best to go above and beyond for her no matter how important the date is.
Her birthday is very important to him because it’s the day his favorite person in the world was born. She thinks all the fussing he does is unnecessary, but she deserves it.
He brings four boxes of donuts to 51. Chloe told him about this shop about an hour away that makes donuts with all sorts of cereals and candy on the frosting which couldn’t remind him more of his fiancé. Kidd teases her that three things make her the happiest; babies, sugar and himself.
Two out of three aren’t bad for the first part of her celebration. He walks in, expecting more of a reaction over donuts, but the app floor is empty.
He walks to the common room and Kidd ambushes him.
She steers him by the shoulders and towards the bunk room. It baffles him.
He shoos her off with one hand, balancing the boxes in the other. “What is your problem?”
“Who said I had a problem?” She plays dumb. “I just…want to show you my office. I haven’t given you a tour!”
What is going on? Kidd’s acting high and it’s like she’s trying to keep him from the common room.
“Kidd, it’s the size of a supply closet. I’ve seen it. If you excuse me, I want to surprise my fiancé with birthday donuts.”
She blocks him. “What’s the rush? You know, we never talk anymore, Casey. Let’s go to my office and have a chat!”
Her enthusiasm is incredibly fake and he’s half convinced there’s a gas leak or something because this is all very strange.
“Why don’t you want me to see Sylvie?” He asks, eyeing his former candidate. His mind goes into overdrive and he starts to worry that something is wrong. Is she hurt and Kidd doesn’t want him to know?
“What? I do. It’s just…this is about our friendship, Casey. I’m worried we’re losing our…thing. You can see your fiancé all the time. Not me.”
She really doesn’t want him to find Sylvie. Her lying is pathetic.
“It’s her birthday, Kidd.”
She bites her lip. “Okay. Okay.” She grabs his arm and ushers him into the locker room. “Listen, Violet’s out sick today so Brett has a floater as a partner.”
He’s still not sure what that has to do with her kidnapping him in the locker room. “Okay?”
“Anyway, the floater…he’s a little touchy,” she explains.
“Touchy?”
“He’s harmless, Casey, but he’s kinda a flirt.”
Great.
“And we all know you go a little macho when people get a little too friendly with Brett so it’s best you don’t go in there.”
Yeah, he has a tendency to act a little jealous, but he’s always been able to handle himself…for the most part. Still, the idea of her partner crowding Sylvie all shift does set his jaw.
“See? There you go looking like you’re ready to kill somebody and you haven’t even seen this guy.”
Is he really that easy to read?
“I’m fine, Kidd.”
“Yeah, and Kelly’s not afraid of snakes.” She pauses. “He is. It’s weird.”
“Yeah, I got that.”
“Matt, what are you doing here!”
He turns around. Sylvie’s standing in the doorway with a bright smile on her face.
“Happy birthday, baby,” he replies. “I brought you those donuts Chloe’s been raving about.”
She bounces over, opening the lid. Her eyes light up. “Oh my god, Matt Casey! I love you like crazy for this!”
She grabs his face in her hands and kisses him, smacking her lips afterwards. “You’re the best future husband a girl could ask for.”
She’s the best future wife. Plus, he doesn’t think bringing her donuts is the most revolutionary thing in the world. She deserves all the love. Always.
He wraps his free arm around her waist and pulls her in. His face is pressed in her shoulder when her temporary partner emerges the way she came.
Matt gives him a look without blatantly acting like a dick. He just needs her partner to get the hint and they’ll be fine.
Sylvie takes the top box from his arms. “Come on. These are totally gonna give 51 a heart attack.”
He follows after her and grins in delight when she raves about the donuts. It’s so good to see her so happy and carefree.
He decides to hang around the house which Severide accuses him of doing over jealousy. That’s not the reason. What’s so wrong with wanting to spend Sylvie’s birthday with her?
He loves her. It’s that simple.
Sylvie’s temporary partner, who he learns goes by Dallas, is a little too close for comfort. He crowds her space when she tells a story and brushes his hand against hers when she accidentally spills some coffee.
It’s annoying, but he’s determined to prove Stella wrong. He can handle watching an overly flirty person with Sylvie.
He excuses himself to leave after Dallas starts asking about Sylvie’s work out routine. Yes, she’s toned. She goes to spin classes regularly. She deserves the praise, but it’s driving him absolutely nuts.
He’s worried he’ll snap so he finds Boden in his office and makes conversation about anything other than Sylvie. He also goes in to ask if Violet’s expected to be back next shift.
Boden reads him like a book, smirking after he asks the question. He looks down at his paperwork. “Casey.”
“What? I’m just…you know, concerned. I can’t care about Makami’s well being?”
Boden shakes his head. “Kidd has eyes everywhere, just so you know.”
Wait, so Boden is in on this plan to keep him away from Dallas and Sylvie? Apparently everyone thinks he’s a bomb about to go off.
Kidd probably has some sort of bet pool going on about how long it’s going to take for him to say something.
“Right. Yep. Forget I said anything,” he mutters, retreating out the door. He’s not giving Kidd ammunition.
He stops in front of Boden’s office. Sylvie’s standing in the doorway and Dallas is crowding her. He knows his fiancé and she looks uncomfortable. Her back is flushed against the door frame and her stupid partner has given her zero space.
It’s common curtesy to leave personal space. He’d be irritated if this guy was crowding anyone.
Dallas, her ridiculously tall, temporary partner swoops in and touches a strand of her hair. That move does it.
Screw it. He doesn’t care if all of 51 is right. He’s so sick of this. He’s going to tell that man to keep his hands to himself.
He makes his way there, but once again, Kidd intervenes and herds him into the old blue room.
She shuts the door behind them.
This woman is so aggravating sometimes. She’s perfect for Severide in that way.
“Kidd, I’ve been patient, but come on! He’s touching her face now? And she’s clearly hating every second. Did you see her body language?”
“Brett can handle him,” She replies. “She’s been handling it and the last thing she needs is your male posturing on her birthday.”
“You’d be losing your shit if some woman walked in here and started feeling up Severide,” Matt points out. “We’d have to probably pry your hands off the woman’s throat. I’m not acting unreasonable here. Someone needs to say something.”
“She’s stuck with grabby hands the rest of shift. He’ll never be back and all you’re going to do is cause problems. She has to work with him another eight hours. It’s best to keep the peace.”
He combs a hand through his hair. He knows she’s right. He doesn’t want to make this harder on Sylvie and causing a scene will do that.
He exhales, reminding himself that Sylvie would shut it down if things got too serious. If she’s suffering through it, so can he.
“Fine. Fine. I’ll keep my mouth shut.”
“And your fists closed?”
He nods. “I’ll be a perfect gentlemen to that asshole.”
Stella doesn’t look like she believes him. She purses her lips.
“I’m serious. I’m good,” he assures. He is. He needs to be for Sylvie. “Now can I please go outside and sneak off to the turn out room to make out with my fiancé?”
She smirks, steps away from the door and gestures him through. “Yes.”
When he walks out, Sylvie’s alone by the printer. She smiles, looking between him and Stella.
“What were you up to?”
Kidd tosses a hand in the air, breezing past them. “Saving a man’s life.”
She puzzles, shuffling closer to him. Her arms wrap around his waist. “You guys were what?”
He doesn’t want to dwell on her temporary partner anymore. “You wanna go make out?”
“Um, duh,” she laughs, hooking her finger around his belt loop and pulling him into the room he was just in with Kidd.
