Critical Superbeast 2016 - 2018
Critical Superbeast was an online critical writing forum based in Hamilton, Ontario, from 2016-2018. Through (mostly) weekly posts, various writers covered the works of artists from the local scene and beyond, including exhibition reviews, thoughts on visual culture topics, studio visit musings and more. It was founded by a group of arts workers and artists in Hamilton.
We felt the need for more critical dialogue in this city, which is increasingly enlivened by working artists. An editorial board was struck not to vet content but rather to coordinate the logistics of a rotating group of writers and editors, handle our call for submissions and organize the content for the blog posts. Facebook posts reached anywhere from 150 to 1000 readers. We’re proud of what was accomplished: the attention brought to the art scene and the hard work of artists (who often toil away without much public feedback), plus the encouraging occasion for writers to conceptualize and deliver a piece to be published.
The group has now wound down due to various other commitments on the part of the organizers. Rest assured that the commitments are all still heavily related to art creation and/or criticism. But we are all proud of what was accomplished with Critical Superbeast:
Forty-four essays written, covering the works of emerging and established Hamilton artists, plus a few living further afield.
Writers were all volunteers, and most of them played an administrative role at some point as well. The list includes: Jen Anisef, Gabriel Baribeau, Melissa Bennett, Aimee Burnett, Tara Bursey, Greg Davies, Anthony Easton, Tor Lukasik-Foss, Jeremy Freiburger, John Haney, Daniel Hutchinson, Amanda Jernigan, Emma Lansdowne, Ingrid Mayrhofer, Sally McKay, Sylvia Nickerson, Caitlin Sutherland, Karen Thiessen, Svava Juliusson, Alana Traficante, and Stephanie Vegh, (Apologies for any omissions).
Artists covered in the writings include: Jennifer Angus, Heather Benning, Katinka Bock, Danny Custodio, Robert Davidson, Erika DeFreitas, Levine Flexhaug, Andrea Flockhart, V. Jane Gordon, Laine Groeneweg, John Haney, Joseph Hartman, Catherine Heard, Thaddeus Holownia, Michele Karch-Ackerman, Sean Kenney, Suzy Lake, Elad Lassry, Steven Laurie, Trisha Leigh Lavoie, Claudia Manley and Liss Platt, Nancy Anne McPhee, Martin Messier, Sylvia Nickerson, Hélio Oiticica, Vicky Sabourin, Giancarlo Scaglia, Judith Scott, WhiteFeather, Benita Whyte, and Marlene Yuen; plus more in various group exhibitions such as Art Spin’s first venture in Hamilton.
Rest in peace, ‘Beast.

Anthony Joshua v Carlos Takam By Gareth A Davies, Boxing Correspondent for The Daily Telegraph
The great American former world heavyweight champion Larry Holmes, who reigned as the king of boxing's blue riband division for over seven years, believes Anthony Joshua could break Rocky Marciano's record of 49-0, and could go on to be one of the longest reigning heavyweight fighters in history. Some assessment from the 'Easton Assassin' Holmes, now 67.
Larry had some fascinating thoughts on Joshua, speaking to me on a recent visit to the UK.
In his view, Joshua's huge draw for fans, inside and outside fight sport, is a sign for the American that the 28-year-old should keep fighting in the UK, keep improving, but in the background, have a template to face all the champions as soon as possible.
Indeed, AJ's promoter Eddie Hearn and the fighter himself have intimated as much this week: the plan they are plotting is to unify all the belts in 2018. It will be tough, promotionally and politically, but it is doable. All four sanctioning bodies - WBA, IBF, WBO and WBC - must fancy having a stake in the growing star.
Holmes, often cited as having one of the greatest jabs in boxing history, held the WBC heavyweight title from 1978 to 1983, The Ring magazine and lineal heavyweight titles from 1980 to 1985, and the inaugural IBF heavyweight title from 1983 to 1985.
In that period, Holmes made 20 successful title defences, and is one of just five boxers to defeat Muhammad Ali, and the only one to stop him, though by the time they met in 1978, Ali was a shadow of the boxer in his pomp.
"Joshua should stay in the UK and fight. He's loved over in the UK," mused Holmes. "He's selling out all these stadiums with 80 and 90 thousand fans flocking to see him. I think he's a great fighter. I see some things where he makes mistakes but he's still young enough to correct those things. He can be champion as long as I was – seven and a half years."
With Joshua, 28, having made three defences of his title, and scheduled to fight three times a year from 2018, barring injuries, it would take him another seven years to claim a place amongst the top names of the division's great ring exponents.
"In my view, he can beat that. He can break that record of Rocky Marciano (49-0). But I do think he should just fight everybody. Be a world champion."
Why then, is Holmes so impressed ? It comes down to what the American saw in that Wladimir Klitschko fight in April. "He can take a punch and he can punch. I didn't realise the guy was six foot six. He can do all the things a guy like me can do and he's three inches taller than me. He's got the arm reach and everything else. He can stay champion for a long time if he continues to keep his mind on the right track.
If I'd been that tall, I could have reigned until I was 65!"
Holmes admits that contests like Carlos Takam, who Joshua meets this weekend in Cardiff, should be blown away by the young tyro, but the old fighter is relishing the day that Joshua steps in with Deontay Wilder, the current WBC champion, from Alabama. "They could flip a coin for that fight. They could fight in America, anywhere he wants.
All he's got to do is be in shape. That's a good fight, Deontay Wilder. It's a hard fight but a good fight. But being champion is about manning up. You're champion, show that you're champion."
But Holmes believes that Ali paved the way for several generations of heavyweights to earn boxing's big bucks. Back then, in Holmes's time, it was known as the richest prize in sport. It was, literally.
"Listen, these fighters are making ten, fifteen, twenty million dollars a fight. I think Muhammad Ali's highest pay check was Larry Holmes – ten million dollars. Today these guys are making tons of money because of Muhammad Ali, not because of Larry Holmes."
Turning to Joshua again, Holmes added: "It's important that Joshua has the best sparring and coaches available from round the world. When I was training and had good tough fights coming up I called guys named Ray Arcel and Freddie Brown and Eddie Futch and they were the three top trainers in those days and they were out there with Joe Louis and Jack Dempsey and everybody. I wanted them in my corner. I didn't want them in my corner if they've never guided nobody. Anybody can say I did this or did that but prove what you've done. Those guys proved it.
All the world's fighters are gunning for Joshua, he's the target man for all the guys coming through, and he has to take them out one by one, and then do it again if necessary."
"But the number one contender should get a shot. When I was fighting and I was champion I'd fight one, two, three, four, five, six... I'd then go back and do it all over again. I'd keep my lane fresh and fight the best fighters out there."
