The Parliament by Aimee Potwatka: I love a book with a weird comp title pitch, and this one is The Princess Bride meets the Birds. A young woman is teaching a group of pre-teens at the library when a parliament of murderous owls descends on the building. To keep them distracted, she reads from her favorite fantasy novel. Graphic here!

Island of the Sea Women by Lisa See is a historical fiction novel about the women divers of Jeju in 1940s Korea. This has some moments that genuinely shocked me.

Dragonfruit by Makiaa Lucier: This was a pure cover buy for me! This is a fun YA fantasy novel about an exiled young woman and the prince of her island searching for dragons. Very fun. Falls into some YA traps, but the setting makes up for it. Graphic here!

Swordheart by T Kingfisher is one of the only romantasy books I've read and liked! This is so fun. It's about a widow & an immortal paladin trapped in a sword. When she draws the sword, he is bound to magically protect her. The grumpy/sunshine fantasy book of my dreams! Graphic here with one of my personal favorite fancasts I've ever done.

Say Hello to my Little Friend by Jennine Capo Crucet: Okay I put this on my mid year book tag as biggest surprise and said I didn't know if I loved it or hated it and that remains lol but since I still think about it I have to put it on here. This is another comp title read, with Scarface meets Moby Dick. After he fails as a Pitbull impersonator, Ismael Reyes decides to follow in the steps of the main character of the film Scarface. At the same time, Lolita the orca at the local aquarium, muses on her captivity. The two of them circle each other throughout the book and it's about immigration and loss of culture and violence and language... Idk I just think about it a lot. I don't know that I recommend it. I just think about it.

Funny Story by Emily Henry: I went on a rom-com binge and read several really fun romances, but this was my favorite. When Daphne's fiance leaves her for his female best friend, Daphne needs a place to stay. She ends up moving in with the previously mentioned best friend's ex-boyfriend (and they were roommates...) and the two of them begin fake dating as a revenge scheme. But then you'll never guess what happens?! Graphic here.

My Aunt Is a Monster by Reimena Yee is a graphic novel about a young blind girl who must go live with her mysterious aunt after the death of her parents. All about adventures and disability. So good!

Dreadful by Caitlin Rozakis: Gav wakes up with no memories and realizes he's trapped in a goblin filled castle of a terribly villainous wizard. Unfortunately, Gav comes to realize that he is the terribly villainous wizard, that these goblins work for him, and he has no idea why he has a princess trapped in a tower. Super fun and silly, just a good time.

A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvie Cathrall Oh gosh, one of the most whimsical books I've ever read. This is an epistolary fantasy novel set in an underwater world, following two people writing letters back and forth to uncover the mystery of their disappeared siblings, who fell in love while writing letters. So lovely. First in a series, just an fyi!

Yaira Onai is Ismael's big sister and was her primary caretaker after their parents passed in an accident. while both were being taken care of by someone else temporarily, Yaira took the responsibility of finding a job that would hire someone as young as her and build her and her sister up and when she was able to sustain herself and Ismael, Yaira chose to take on the responsibility of being Ismael's primary caretaker at the appropriate age.

When Ismael turned 13 though, Yaira made the hard decision of volunteering her own life for her sister.

Yaira Onai passed away when a test run became too much on her body

Appearance: dark brown (almost black) afro, grey-blue eyes, Deep dark skin, and stood at nearly 6'0. She loved wearing bright colors and yellow was her favorite color.

I think they could have a very layered relationship over/discussion about being dead in their home universes, if they ever both felt up to it. Mostly a sad one, but there's nothing to build understanding like actually Going Thru It. I wonder how Break would feel about Kyrie being able to persist in their original world in such a limited fashion, and I know Kyrie would have complicated feelings about Break being more alive in form than them in this world, scars and all.

Kyrie tends to put their foot in their mouth around people they deem more attractive than they are, including ones they have no romantic attraction to, so they're likely to accidentally reveal Break is one of them eventually. An "I'm Kyrie and he's handsome," slip in an introduction to someone else sort of thing. Break does not let them live this down

Less a headcanon and more of a wild fantasy(?): family game night at Kyrie's house. Somehow they figure out a game or few that Ismael, Break, Kyrie and potentially close others can play together. Possibly too energetic bonding ensues.

VAGUE MISTIFIED TIMELINE! (or, the trauma timeline)

break is in the middle of a shopping trip w/ ismael when the mist descends onto the city. after spotting ismael's sister, they enter it together, experiencing a few nicer memories. ismael learns of his blindness.

(the next few are a wip, bear with me pls.)

first meeting threads w/ new muses where he doesn't have to use mad hatter, still in relatively high spirits.

nicolette and break meet a residual data imprint of kevin regnard, picturing the first time kevin ever killed somebody. more trauma reveals ensue here, including break losing his left eye.

break fights a card before finding yuri, about to be eaten by grim. using mad hatter properly, now. eventually meeting a sentient data imprint of kevin regnard and yuri's dead enemies.

car crash time with wang yi. break is slowly starting to not have a good time physically. mad hatter's draining him, he carries injuries from the previous encounters, gains a few new ones.

by himself, break discovers the sentient data imprint of lady sinclair, in the process of being pulled into the abyss. the bad time is now very much there mentally, as well. he's pretty much ruined at this point.

finally, break finds a sentient data imprint of shelly, hanging out with zhilan, in the gardens of the rainsworths. while his spirits are definitely lifted throughout, he is very much ready to pass out. with no respawns this time around, he's been burdening himself a lot, though he's trying his best to hide it.

oh crap i partially answered that in #16 here but also:

the slow and steady descent into obsession as he makes more and more room for you in his life. for some reason, you get mentioned in his conversations constantly, even when the topic is completely unrelated. he remembers that much about you and your habits, you see.

he keeps asking you to stay with him as a veiled promise to rule by his side. or would you prefer to rule in his place? whatever you like is fine.

are you kissing him everyday? he tilts his head towards you after breakfast and helpfully reminds you which part of his face gets its turn this morning.

is someone bothering you? congratulations, they are now an honorary member of the holy host. they will live to serve and protect you loyally forever for the rest of their life. one day you'll be fighting demons and your ex-botherer volunteers himself to be your meat shield by jumping straight into enemy fire, even though you're perfectly capable of defending yourself. your gracious partner sends his body back in a beautiful coffin to his parents in his hometown.

do you like music? he remembers he's yet to sing for you and waits for you to ask, all the while refusing to so much as hum a tune for anyone else. he thinks you'll think of it eventually.

he likes "pure" souls. not pure as in innocent as it is more "pure" as in possessing a focus, a goal, or a consistent characteristic

astolfo is pure because of his fanaticism, ismael is pure because of her warmth, nero is pure because of her honest heart, and even architect is pure, in her own way, because of her confidence to do whatever she wants while having very real self-awareness of her shortcomings.

(eiden technically qualifies because he's kind but he got tainted by lust and aury turned a blind eye to him forever)

he acknowledges people that had to crawl back from their failures, step by step. this is his favorite subset of humanity. he finds it charming to see them struggle and triumph, and thinks they're more interesting than those who've had a smooth life, or those who've met with misfortune and do nothing except complain.

he naturally clicks with docile characters, but is more interested in gentle types with a backbone who will listen to him while having enough strength to order him around. truly submissive types are boring. to this date, klaus is the only one who's struck the perfect balance between indulgent and demanding without insulting aury's pride. aury finds klaus irreplaceable as a result...

RELATIONSHIP PLOT CALL

Anyway, moving on!

Friends- Even with Ismael's slight cautious nature, it's still pretty easy to befriend her. She's still friendly and easy to talk to and she's always helpful as well. Being her friend means she'll sing to you, invite you to hang out, and she can talk hours on the phone with her friends as well. You'll get random small gifts too!

Best Friends - First things first: Kyrie does not count as  a best friend. They’re more of like a family member. A sibling of her’s. Anyway, with that out of the way Ismael has best friends back at home. 4 to be exact. Getting on Ismael’s best friend list just means that she’ll have your back. Like she would a frend, really, but the difference between the two is that she’ll be more open with how she feels. She’ll text at 2 AM if she has to and you’re more than welcome to do the same if you need someone to talk to. She's a little more honest with her feelings with those she is closer too. You'll see her cry more, lean on you more, etc. She won't feel AS a burden because she knows that her closest friends are okay with it.

Mentor - Ismael has been practicing with all sorts of stuff. From learning to actually fight using her fist and all that, archery, to parkouring, to just all around learning to take offense and defense in her stance when needed. Not only that, but she may start needing someone who can help guide her path. Lately, while Ismael is the same Ismael from when she first arrived–from when she was back at home, there are things that’s changing in her. Her views are shifting. She hasn’t lost her faith and that’s something not easily lost BUT she probably does need a little help in making sure she stays on the right path. The PATH she wants and needs to stay on.

Enemies - This isn’t easy? WELL, I guess it is. If you’re just an all around awful person, horrible, gross, and just plain rude…You got yourself an enemy. Ismael considered one person her enemy, but he's no longer here and she has another who is. Anyway, becoming Ismael’s enemy means that you’ve done something to get her to that point. Whether you harmed the people she’s close to or what have you. 

Found Family- This is where Kyrie is. A found family. Kyrie is like a big sibling for Ismael and they’re one of the people that she will seek for some kind of advice. If you’re in this list, then welcome WELCOME you adopted yourself a little/big sister or she adopted you. Both found family and her friends are very important to her. She will jump through FIRE for her found family if she has to. Be prepared to see random texts and pictures of all sorts of things.
