She flinches at first at his touch, but, once his hands rest on her cheeks, she lets her eyes fall closed and relax against him. A tear slides down her cheek. He was so gentle, so tender, with her. "Nothing ever lasts with me." She admits, glancing up to look him in the eyes. She leans her forehead against his and breathes out a sigh. Shoulders shake again with a sob. "Lo siento, mi amor." She presses her lips to his palm. "I've never had something this good and it scares the shit out of me. You scare the shit out of me."

''Hey, Hey, hey..'' In an attempt to reassure her, Tatum's taking a step closer and moving his hands to cup her face as he looks her over. He can feel his heart break at the sight of her, with the tears in her eyes and seeing how upset she'd been in general. ''I'm not leaving you. I'm in this for the long-haul, I told you. You and I against the world, princesca.'' Thumbs are running along her cheeks in some attempt to ease her mind, leaning in to rest his forehead against hers. ''Its okay. Its okay, I promise you. We'll navigate through this together, you and I. No tiene sentido deshacerse de mí pronto, princesa.''

Character Info Sheet
Tumblr media
NAME: Silas Lane Garcia Alderin
NAME MEANING: Silas meaning 'of the forest' from the Latin Silvanus and he is named after his paternal grandfather. Lane is masculinized from his mother's name Elena (specifically her nickname Lanie), which is the Spanish variation of the name Helen, meaning 'bright, shining light'. Silas's surname is officially Alderin, with his mother's first surname Garcia (of Garcia Villegas or Garcia-Villegas from the traditional dos apellidos convention) listed as a sort of second middle name, since Elena had elected to take her husband's name at the time of their marriage. Garcia is a Spanish surname meaning 'bear', while Alderin is a spelling variation of Aldrin, either from the Old English meaning 'old and wise ruler' or the Old Norse Áleifr meaning 'noble leader'. (OOC: surname was definitely chosen because Buzz Aldrin but also more because mun is a Lily Aldrin from HIMYM stan no regrets)
ALIAS/ES: Nicknamed Si (pronounced like sigh), also called Miguel by his grandfather after he developed dementia and often mistook Silas for his father, Michael.
ETHNICITY: Mexican (Mother's side) & British/Italian (Father's side)
ONE (1) PICTURE YOU LIKE BEST OF YOUR CHARACTER:
Tumblr media
THREE HCS YOU'VE NEVER TOLD ANYONE: ( I've been writing this man since 2012, I'm pretty sure I've told everything to one person or another at some point, so we'll go with some HCs I haven't posted on this blog yet. )
Silas is allergic to copper (and incidentally the blood and various other bodily fluids of Vulcans; he learned this the hard way with his Vulcan Academy boyfriend because I thought it was funny af and for literally no other reason)
He really, *really* enjoys getting flowers. Like, a lot. Give this lorge grown ass man flowers and watch him smile and blush.
Silas is not especially a fan of labels in regards to sexuality. Silas has almost exclusively dated men for almost twenty years, but he has also had many emotional relationships with women during that time. If pressed, he would say that he is primarily physically attracted to men and primarily emotionally attracted to women, though both attractions develop with either one, eventually. His relationships with men tend to be intensely passionate, but emotionally shallow or needlessly complicated, while his relationships with women are often deeply established before any kind of desire rears its head. Because of this, the women he falls in love with are usually already well-established as friends, and he declines to pursue any romantic involvement for the sake of the existing relationship.
THREE THINGS YOUR CHARACTER LIKES DOING IN THEIR FREE TIME:
Reading. This boy is always reading like five books at a time. He is partial to poetry and fiction, but he's also all up in the niche scientific and anthropological research spaces.
Cooking. He likes food. Real food. Replicators suck. The end.
Dancing/Singing. He sings while he's cooking. He dances in the shower. Music lives in his body at all times, thank you for coming to my TED talk.
EIGHT PEOPLE YOUR CHARACTER LIKES/LOVES: (PSA: multiship so each one exists in its own little verse unless there's an arranged poly situation going on; also, if you are not on this list don't worry, he likes almost everyone! I just picked the 8 who are closest to him currently and/or have been close to him for years; if we haven't interacted much or haven't discussed their relationship OOC then I don't like to make assumptions about it overall.)
Ten of Eleven aka Madeline - his baby girl, pride and joy, and the true love of his life, his adopted daughter.
Jin Kim - Long time OTP played off-site, biochemist with a crappy disposition but great legs.
Leonard McCoy (@onlybonesleft ) - Sometimes platonic soulmate, sometimes not platonic at all, but inevitably cut from the same cloth. Both men are too used to caring for others and not enough for themselves, so they pester each other into self-care submission and their relationship keeps me up at night because reasons.
Christine Chapel (@nursc ) - The bright spot in a shitty day but also 100% reliable when you need help on the floor. She knows her shit, she gets things done, she's the one he calls when he needs a hand. He hopes she knows she can count on him for the same. His work wife, his non-work wife, his gossip girl, his bestie. Can't live without her, doesn't want to.
Sergio Alderin - His middle brother, closest in age and the one he still sometimes talks to. Schoolteacher. Married to his childhood BFF.
Simon Castelo - His childhood BFF and brother-in-law, keeps him up to date with goings on in his brothers' lives more often than the brothers themselves, given their rocky relationships.
Michael (Mikey) Alderin Jr. - Youngest brother, wanderlust type with little guidance and direction in his life. Suffered in foster care and blames Silas for not being there to protect him.
James T. Kirk (@traiilblazer ) - On-again, off-again lovers, played off-site.
TWO THINGS YOUR CHARACTER REGRETS:
Losing his brothers. While they are all three alive and well, the relationship between them is strained. Silas leaving foster care and his subsequent failure to obtain custody of his younger brothers at the time of their parents' deaths is something he wishes had gone differently. He thinks he gave up too easily, that he should have tried harder. He also carries guilt because, deep down, his failure at the time had been a relief. Relief from the burden of trying to figure out how to provide for and raise his siblings when he, himself, was only 17.
Getting married. Not so much the relationships themselves, but the almost knee-jerk urge to put untested romances under the stress of a long-term, official commitment. Military marriages tho, amirite?
TWO PHOBIAS YOUR CHARACTER HAS:
Autophobia, also called monophobia, isolophobia, or eremophobia, is the specific phobia or a morbid fear or dread of oneself or of being alone, isolated, abandoned, and ignored. For Silas, this manifests as a fear of ending up alone or almost an expectation of abandonment. This is, incidentally, contrary to how he has operated throughout his life in the past, where he is and always has been fiercely independent out of necessity and often chooses not to rely on others for help or support. He often pursues relationships with individuals who need him in some way, rather than pursuing mutuality and emotional intimacy which would require him to be vulnerable, thereby ensuring that he both has intrinsic value to the other person and that if/when the relationship ends, he is not utterly destroyed by it. He believes that love exists, but he does not believe it exists for him or that he is deserving of it.
Trypanophobia is the extreme fear of medical procedures involving injections or hypodermic needles. This seems like an inconvenient fear for a doctor to have, however it only manifests when he himself is facing an injection or medical procedure, himself. The fear, at this point in his life, is fairly minor and easily overcome, however it was, at one point, severe and debilitating to his ability to work. Early in his career, Silas and a few others on his away team encountered a Borg vessel and were partially assimilated during that encounter. After being recovered, the various nanite appendages were surgically removed, but the initial trauma of being injected and losing identity and autonomy was heavily damaging to his mental state for some time after the event.

❝ hey. how are you holding up? ❞ everyone had been shaken by the news of camilla’s passing, so he wanted to check in on as many people as he could. elena was one of the first he stopped by to see. he could remember being fourteen and the president at the time going to his house to give his mother his condolences for the loss of his father. it had meant nothing and oliver knew that he could never offer his condolences to enough people or enough times. she had meant the world to him and he was heartbroken. ❝ if you need anything, you know you can just call me, yeah? ❞

Ya no estoy aquí, another take on immigrant stories.
(This will have SPOILERS for Ya no estoy aqui, I recommend watching it first. It is very touching and heavy tale of belonging and loneliness)
Tumblr media
Sinopsis:
Ulises takes is the leader of the cumbia loving group Terkos in Monterrey, Mexico. But when he gets involve on a gang related accident he has to leave his home so his family and him can be safe, taking up a new home in the distant city of New York.
Writing-Directing-Acting
This piece of media was one of the best made in Mexico so far. Mexico has been growing in the production and creation of different movies which resonate with a diverse of groups. This time it was the turn of one of the most negated states and music genre ever.
Ya no estoy aqui has a well done balance in the writing, expressing and pointing out different subjects that plague the world; from immigration to corruption, from cultural sub groups to violent gangs and, in the background, the injustices a society faces when they are being neglected by the government or the violence has grown into an out of control normality.
The point of view we follow is from Ulises how he works around and moves to survive, but we can also see how the people around him reacts like the ones he left behind in Monterrey, how their lives have changed so much due to him being away and how the situation in his city is changing.
We can also see the point of view of other people who are in the same situation as Ulises, although they’re not face with as much difficulty as him due to knowing the language.
It explores how the mindset changes, how the characters experience life in the new places and how those places change them. It brings up the hardships of being an immigrant and how awfully homesick they feel, and yet we can also see how those people can act so harshly between each other, respectively how 3 of the tertiary characters treated Ulises just for the way he looked. It’s very clear they are from Mexico as well, it shows how people in general can treat each other as bad if not worse than people from a different country.
Tumblr media
Ulises is a very well made character, it shows he is a whole person with feelings, hardships and desires. The actor, Juan Daniel García Treviño, makes a great job by showing the difference between him living in his home, being happy, bright and engaging, and living in big city, where he begins to act isolated, serious and having little to nothing of humor. The change of tendencies and attitudes can be quite hard, since you’re told you need to practically change the character. You need to change who you are. That’s exactly what happens to the character and Juan Daniel does is amazingly.
The idea of being ripped away from your home, your family, your culture and being thrown into the shark tank that is, not only other country, but the most violent and cynical city in the whole country (fighting for the 1st place is Los Angeles and Texas in my inexpert opinion).
There were some odd acting moments, mostly during the group parts where Ulises is with the Terkos. And curiously, it’s not the dancing parts. It’s their interactions at times, they are a bit stiff and awkward. There are other shots where they are seen laughing and playing, and those look very natural. Maybe those shots were the first one they were doing.
The director Fernando Frias understands the importance of belonging somewhere. The whole film is about that and you can perceive it everywhere the character goes. The concept is a very important and powerful one among the sentiments of loneliness and sadness which are used as well.
Seeing the character struggle in a world that he doesn’t fit in, that he doesn’t feel its home is the main and most important thing everyone can relate to. Even if you aren’t an immigrant, you can understand how awful feeling alone and feeling an absence or emptiness in your being can feel. We can sympathize with that and maybe get a more understanding view of the people surrounding us. We only want to be understood, we only want to be seen as part of something or somewhere where one can be themselves without being a mocking or something.
Photography
Tumblr media
Amazing shots by Damian Garcia. Another work I’ve seen from his is La vida Precoz y Breve de Sabina Rivas. Between this two you can see he tends to work with darkness, not all the time just very commonly. And he does it VERY well. People have a bad habit of underexposing their scenes, to the point of ABSOLUTE DARKNESS (I’m looking at you, fucking USA horror movies that only woRK ON FUCKING BLUES AND GRAY TONES AS WELL MY GO-). Mr. Garcia does it perfectly and balanced, you can see the silouttes in the dark, you can see the movement.
The shots are very active, by this I mean they are sequence shots. Sequence shots follow the character around, there are also zoom outs and zoom ins mostly used in the flashbacks, which makes it have a more nostalgic feeling. There’s a specific shot where Ulises is dancing with los Terkos and the camera zooms out to make the shot a perfect square, showing them in the center while the rest of the screen is in almost pitch black. That scene is perfect, it doesn’t need a slow mo, it doesn’t need music, and it only needs the energy, the laughs, and the music coming from the radio to give us what Ulises want.
Tumblr media
The colors are balanced, not oversaturated but still bright enough. When it comes to viewing cities and towns, photographers tend to use a very cliché color scheme. For a city like New York it’s always kind of red, grey and blue tones that can also look very opaque, meanwhile for Mexican towns, they always use the yellowish, orange tones. One can get very tired of those you know? Which is why I’m very happy to observe this photography specially coming from a Mexican. There are very amazing photographers and Mr. Garcia will go even bigger soon with his amazing work.
Sound
Tumblr media
Awesome work, capturing the essence of what the parties and dance spots sound and feel like is a complex thing to do. Not many manage to capture something that isn’t describe as only noise. It is an experience, it’s something you feel not only hear. The music is a very important part in this movie so the way it is listened from radios, the transition from being in the plane of the character and then to a type of score, while also giving us the personal taste of Ulises is a well done edited piece.
Yuri Laguna has done a lot of works, I don’t personally know many but I did get a very good experience with this movies sound, music and effects. The sound effects sounded like something for the movie and not taken from somewhere else and sounded exactly where they are intended to do so. From the foot-steps to the mumbles between characters when they are inside a store.
I really like the scene where Ulises is at a store and he is about to buy a speaker that reminds him of his home. You can hear the boss and Ulises talking and making hand signs but you can’t understand what they are saying. It’s a little detail I really enjoy. I will have to keep an open ear for any other work of Mr. Laguna
Make up, Art and Costume design
Tumblr media
I don’t even know where to start. I’m very sure most of the places they went to are the real ones, so scouting was done very, very well and amazing to get those lovely and breathtaking shots from a high place. But the makeup?? The clothes? THE SPACES? They entire art department did so well! There are so many details that can tell you about the characters. This is what is called subtle storytelling. The scenes that stick a lot to me were the ones that took place in the home of one of Ulises friends. The whole room is dark, and her and her family are watching TV. They have anguish in their faces, and when the shot is flipped to see their backs, you can see 2 things: her phone ringing, because Ulises is trying to contact her, and the TV. Now the one thing that could caught your eye would be the phone BUT the TV has more information for you, which is how Monterrey is having not only an increase of gangs but also an increase of poverty and police violence.
The clothes are very distinguish, I don’t know much about many sub-groups. I didn’t heard of Kolombia before this movie so this is a nice look into the culture that has been popular over there. The main actor is actually from the state so maybe the costume design team got a little info from him and obviously do their own investigation. The clothing’s pop a lot, mostly due to the style (very big and long shirts and pant, and the signature white shoes of los Terkos). The hairstyle is what you would get at first sight though, it being so obviously made by the own character.
In our own modism: Se la rifaron.
I have seen very detailed works, and this one didn’t go underappreciated since the people who work in it got a nomination for an Ariel (the most prestigious Mexican film prize).
Custom design: Magdalena de la Riva y Gabriela Fernández
Make up: María Elena López y Itzel Peña García
Art design: Taísa Malouf Rodrigues y Gino Fortebuono
I didn’t found more info about this people but I’m sure they will go far if they keep up their amazing work.
Editing
Tumblr media
I’m pretty sure the final product is what the director intended. It has clean transitions and well done jump cuts, although I think they used a lot of black ins I think the rest is fine. You don’t need to do super specific or out of the box editing when it comes to a solid story that is intended to be realistic. The pace is good and going back and forward between the flashbacks and the present gives you a more dynamic story. There are some confusing points when it comes to the dream sequences, but I think that’s mostly the point of those. The character would get into points he can’t differentiate what’s real and what’s fake. His desires are interfering with his present to the point of confusion.
Editor: Yibrán Asaud and Fernando Frias.
Conclusion
Immigration is an overused theme, a very well-known subject and a problem that has been happening for years. Problem that hasn’t been fix, if countries were at least trying to fix the problems there wouldn’t have to be so many people putting their lives in danger to travel to a safer place. Then again, people have the power and sometimes power corrupts the person (which is why I think a lot of gangs exist too). Even though it is an overused them, many writers and directors have tried to make compelling stories and characters so the subject is not only forgotten but also inspiring for the people to help others, to sympathize and to understand this people.
Ulises is not a 100% good person, nor a bad person, he is a kid who just wants to spend time with his friends and have fun while doing listening to something he loves and feels a connection with.
Another story of immigration that I really enjoy is Guten Tag, Ramon but that story is way to idealistic, while Ya no estoy aqui is more realistic. There’s also La jaula de Oro but that has a very, very dark ending, realistic non the less but still with a more pessimistic and hopeless ending. This movie kind of stands in a middle ground, where the character just comes back to a changed home.
I’ve read some people saying this movie doesn’t have a resolution, but I think that’s the point. The resolution is that life doesn’t stop. A movie with an anticlimactic ending is not a bad movie (at least not all the time), it just makes you think.
Ulises returns to his home which has changed. He didn’t had the opportunity to see it change and change with it. He will have to start from 0, it’s like going to New York all over again. Life is about change and sometimes that change can come from us or others. Things will impact you one way or another, and sometimes life goes on without you.
You have to decide what to do when you are faced with harshness. Although this movie is mostly about belonging somewhere, the ending teaches you about decisions and choosing.
Ulises chooses to return home, he chooses home even when his friends have move on from him, even if his family has turned their back on him, he chooses to come back because he missed it there and not all is bad. There’s a lot of bad going, but at least he is home now. At least he is here. (Al menos el está aquí)

2018: FAVOURITE BOOKS
ever since i started uni back in september i’ve been reading less and less due to lack of time and energy, so to get some of my old enthusiasm back i decided to make a list of the best books that i read for the first time in 2018. without further ado, out of the 72 books that i read this year, these are my top ten!
1. armistice by lara elena donnelly
the undisputed number one is none other than the second book in the amberlough dossier trilogy. frankly, this book had it all: lush descriptions of elaborately crafted settings, complicated politics and machinations, conflicting personal agendas and ideologies, carefully developed and utterly lovable characters. oh, and angst. so much angst.
2. final draft by riley redgate
final draft is a book that is extremely dear to my heart, on an extremely personal level. the writing is quietly beautiful, even brutal at times, and the story is deeply introspective: a character study of its protagonist, a truly stunning tale about self-doubt, ambition, discovering the world and learning to love yourself. riley redgate’s novel touched me in a way that even today i can’t fully explain.
3. the illuminae files by amie kaufman & jay kristoff
putting an entire trilogy on one spot is probably cheating, but i’m allowing myself this transgression. a thrilling ride from start to finish, the illuminae files trilogy offers endless entertainment, mind-boggling twists and deeper questions on humanity and artificial intelligence. combined with an intriguing format, charming characters and addictive pacing, these books undeniably won me over.
4. lair of dreams by libba bray
reading this book definitely took me on a journey. one of the few books this year that i literally couldn’t put down, i remember staying up until five a.m. back in july in order to finish it. reading chapter after chapter without ever thinking of stopping, being completely immersed as different storylines were woven together to forge one captivating mystery: this novel filled me with awe. i remember closing the book after it was over and being overcome with love for these characters, already needing to get my hands on the next book of libba bray’s fascinating series.
5. the long way to a small, angry planet by becky chambers
perhaps my favourite space opera that i’ve ever read. a heartwarming example of the found family trope? check. alien species with detailed and distinctive characteristics and histories? check. a refreshing lack of anthropocentrism in sci-fi? check. although not as action-packed as the novels usually put forth by the sci-fi genre, becky chambers’ debut thoroughly impressed me with its underlying reflection on human nature and interaction.
6. girls made of snow and glass by melissa bashardoust
this novel caught me by surprise. a masterfully-created retelling of snow white, it finds the perfect balance between the familiar and the new. the exploration of motherhood in its pages is nothing short of stunning, and the many subtilities and layers hidden behind the stepmother and daughter relationship blew me away. a character-driven and slow-paced story that enthralled me entirely.
7. amberlough by lara elena donnelly
in my original goodreads review i described this book as an underrated gem, and to this day i can’t find more appropriate words. upon finishing amberlough, i was left dazzled by the atmospheric and sensual writing, enchanted by the tale of complex politics and espionage, overcome with love for the ensemble of characters. the moral ambiguity, the intricate character dynamics, the glamor of this city of cabarets and corruption... everything leaves me awed by lara elena donnelly’s mind.
8. the cruel prince by holly black
i still thank the enormous hype surrounding this book as well as my undying curiosity for making me check out this book even though its premise (and the promise of faeries) didn’t particularly tempt me. a cast of deeply flawed and immoral characters as well as an unending cycle of scheming, treachery and betrayal elevated this novel beyond everything i’d expected. increasingly dark, mysterious, addictive, and promising delightfully awful things for the rest of the series; i couldn’t help but love it.
9. vengeful by v.e. schwab
although perhaps not as startingly ingenious as its predecessor, the hotly-anticipated sequel to vicious did not disappoint. victoria schwab yet again showcases her gift in terms of storytelling, with brilliantly shifting timelines, nuanced morals and an ensemble of characters consisting of both beloved old favourites and intriguing new additions.
10. certain dark things by silvia moreno-garcia
if you’d told me, before i read this book, that i’d be including a vampire book in my favourite books of the year, i probably would have laughed. i thought vamp literature had gone out of fashion, yet silvia moreno-garcia proved me wrong in the most satisfying way: with a richly-imagined, diverse and worldwide vampire mythology, nuanced characters and gruesome action. what’s not to love?
honorable mentions: the mime order by samantha shannon; strange the dreamer by laini taylor; the belles by dhonielle clayton.

Plot Drop #2 - The Seven Deadly Sins
After the video comes to an end, the lights go back to normal. The smoke machines die out. But, all is far from calm for in the center of the room lays a horrific sight.
Seven individuals from the cast and crew lay in two separate heaps upon the floor, each with a name of a sin carved into their foreheads.
The first heap consists of:
Jennifer Scarrow [Greed]: The werewolf had been tied down as molten gold was lightly drizzled across and hardened into her skin.
Aiden Woods [Lust]: The human had been stripped down to his underwear and blindfolded. A bright red kiss mark clear as day upon his lips as he lays there, withering in pain from the poison currently entering his blood stream.
Ella Ramos [Envy]: The witch has been cursed with the spell of injury transference. But, unlike the typical spell, she not only has to endure the injures of one person, but of a couple of the other six, laying there with burn marks across her back from what appears to have been gold, marks across her head from what appears to have been a silver crown, a thousand cuts all over her body, and broken arms and legs.
Standing above them is a woman most have yet to have met, one Catalina Arguello. A Revelationist who had been recruited a few years back by Vincent Riley no less and is responsible for Graciela Garcia’s Death. The witch stands tall, decked out in weapons, and appears to ready not to go down without a fight. Her special abilities include: Mind Control, Telekinesis, & Teleportation.
(OOC note: This a temporary villain we are introducing for this event. She is a Maria Gabriela De Faria fc played by Admin B. PLEASE FOLLOW HER ACCOUNT HERE. She will only be around for the duration of the event and to potentially wrap up any event threads after the event is over. Feel free to message her account/respond to her starter having your characters interact with her, fight her, be injured by her, kill her etc.)
The second heap consists of:
Daniella Montez [Pride]: The vampire is laying there, limp on the ground after having silver injected straight into her blood stream and a crown of silver spikes pushed into her head.
Michaela Beaumont [Wrath]: The harpy is spilling out light after having a thousand cuts inflicted all over her body.
Elena Morgan [Gluttony]: The vampire has been force fed so much vervain that they now lie there, vomiting up blood.
Carter Andrews [Sloth]: The human has had all the bones in his arms and legs broken so that he won’t be able to move incapsulating the peak of laziness.
Standing above this heap is a face you all know and might have grown to love, Vincent Riley. The hedge witch has been working undercover for the Revelationists since he came to set. He is the true culprit behind the kidnappings and the cloud hack.
A wicked smile forms across his face as he grabs a member of the crowd- Kate Buchanan’s Public Assistant and Progeny, Patrick- and stakes him through the chest, dropping the dead body to the ground just as an all out fight breaks loose, with everyone still trapped inside.
(OOC note: Like Catalina, Vinny is now an official temporary character. He is of course played by Admin A. Vinny will be taken out of play after the event ends, but for now, feel free to have your characters interact with him, fight him, be injured by him, kill him etc. You all should already be following him, but just in case, his account is here.)
@jennyscarrowstunt, @aiden-woods, @carter-drews, @ellaramos, @danimontez, @michaelabeaumont, @elenamstafford, @vinnyriley, @deseandoparagrace
OOC Note: Please feel free to interact with the two temporary villains and each other in the starter tags whether you were mentioned upon or not. Also, if you were mentioned above, feel free to act out how your characters ended up this way on the dash/who finds them/helps them etc. Once again, if you would like your character to be getting injured and you haven’t gotten admin approval just shoot us a message to the main to let us know! Most importantly have fun.

Elon Musk Can't Sell His Teslas in Texas
In six states, it's illegal to walk into a company-owned store and buy a car. ----- Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/reasontv Like us on Facebook: http://ift.tt/2mw4JfN... Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/reason Subscribe to our podcast at iTunes: https://goo.gl/az3a7a Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines. ----- When Elon Musk launched the first Tesla sports car in 2008, he didn't just set out to create a mass market for electric vehicles; Musk wanted to disrupt the entire auto industry by cutting out the dealership middleman and selling his cars directly to consumers. Tesla's sales approach has resonated with customers who want a more interactive car buying experience. Holm, a realtor based in Austin, Texas is one of those Tesla converts. He spends a lot of time on the road driving clients in his Model S. He loves the fact that his vehicle doesn't need much maintenance and can be charged overnight in his garage. But when Matt went to purchase his Tesla, he couldn't just walk into a store and buy one. "I actually had to go online, configure it, and order it sight unseen," says Holm. "It was like I was a spy or something getting some James-Bond car delivered." Unlike the big car companies, Tesla doesn't have a network of independent dealerships that sell its cars. The company runs its own showrooms, but in Texas—along with Connecticut, Michigan, Louisiana, Utah, and West Virginia—the government makes it illegal to walk into a Tesla store and buy a car. Almost every state has some sort of restriction on directly purchasing cars from manufacturers. The purpose of these franchise laws, which date to the 1930s, is to prevent car buyers from cutting out the middlemen—a big political constituency. The Lone Star State has nearly 1,300 franchised car dealerships employing about 100,000 people. The National Auto Dealers Association (NADA) has repeatedly argued that the current system of franchised dealers is necessary to protect consumers and ensure fair competition. In a speech before the Automotive Press Association last October, NADA chairman Jeff Carlson stated that consumers preferred the dealership sales model and that dealership networks were "the best, most efficient, and most pro-consumer way of selling new cars and trucks." But if car buyers really preferred going through third-party dealers, why do they need government protection? Car manufacturers have tried to sell straight to consumers prior to Tesla. In the late 1990s, Ford attempted to circumvent the dealerships in Texas by starting its own stores and selling used cars through their own company website. The Texas Department of Transportation ruled that this violated the state's franchise laws and ordered Ford to shut down operations. Now Musk is taking his own shot at selling direct to consumers. In the past five years, Tesla has spent over $1.2 million on Texas lobbyists in an effort to eliminate the direct sales ban. Produced by Alexis Garcia. Vycle Bicycle Elevator
On the Vycle you won't go Tour de France fast or Tour de France graceful (heh, heh, check it out) but seated atop this human-powered elevator, you will go all out Y-axis on a bicycle.
Elena Larriba and Jon Garcia the Vycle vertical transport system prototype for urban areas in need of: 1) more energy-efficient and sustainable ways to ascend floors (and scale wales, wannabe Spider-Men); and 2) a method for doing so that can accommodate people of different ages and abilities.
Vycle design is similar to a pulley system. The vertical structure is balanced with counterweights, so once you're seated on the Little Bicycle That Could, the only heavy lifting you need to conquer is your own body weight. Vycle also incorporates traditional bike gears, so riders can control the effort-to-speed ratio they want to use on ascents and descents.
Larriba and Garcia view Vycle as a viable workplace installation (gift for the office, boss?) for eco-friendly functionality, plus employee well-being. Obviously Vycle use stimulates the body and, like the HOVR seated walker, breaks up too-long periods of sitting unmoving at a desk. But the vertical pedaler's fun and funky design, like the Hamster Wheel Standing Desk, also stimulates the mind, taking you back to the playground, and encouraging a more interactive flow of movement in office communities.
Muchas danke to Laughing Squid.

ILF2 Is a Regulator of RNA Splicing and DNA Damage Response in 1q21-Amplified Multiple Myeloma
Publication date: Available online 29 June 2017 Source:Cancer Cell Author(s): Matteo Marchesini, Yamini Ogoti, Elena Fiorini, Anil Aktas Samur, Luigi Nezi, Marianna D'Anca, Paola Storti, Mehmet Kemal Samur, Irene Ganan-Gomez, Maria Teresa Fulciniti, Nipun Mistry, Shan Jiang, Naran Bao, Valentina Marchica, Antonino Neri, Carlos Bueso-Ramos, Chang-Jiun Wu, Li Zhang, Han Liang, Xinxin Peng, Nicola Giuliani, Giulio Draetta, Karen Clise-Dwyer, Hagop Kantarjian, Nikhil Munshi, Robert Orlowski, Guillermo Garcia-Manero, Ronald A. DePinho, Simona Colla Amplification of 1q21 occurs in approximately 30% of de novo and 70% of relapsed multiple myeloma (MM) and is correlated with disease progression and drug resistance. Here, we provide evidence that the 1q21 amplification-driven overexpression of ILF2 in MM promotes tolerance of genomic instability and drives resistance to DNA-damaging agents. Mechanistically, elevated ILF2 expression exerts resistance to genotoxic agents by modulating YB-1 nuclear localization and interaction with the splicing factor U2AF65, which promotes mRNA processing and the stabilization of transcripts involved in homologous recombination in response to DNA damage. The intimate link between 1q21-amplified ILF2 and the regulation of RNA splicing of DNA repair genes may be exploited to optimize the use of DNA-damaging agents in patients with high-risk MM.

Marchesini et al. show that in multiple myeloma the overexpression of ILF2, resulting from chromosome 1q21 amplification, drives resistance to DNA-damaging agents partly by modulating the interaction between YB-1 and the splicing factor U2AF65 to promote the processing and stabilization of transcripts involved in homologous recombination. http://ift.tt/2tw42aE

Elena breathed in a shaky sigh to keep herself from crying. Her eyes burned as she tried her best to fight off all of her feelings. She flinched at his words. They weren't harsh--they were just so true. He had stuck around and he had been the best thing that happened to her. That's what made him so goddamn scary, and her efforts of scaring him off weren't doing that trick like it had with previous relationships. A strong hand rested on her shoulder. "It is--lonely, i mean." Her voice was barely above a whisper as she tried to keep herself together. Tear filled eyes finally meet his. "No. Stay." Elena's hands reached behind her to rest on the counter. "I don't know how to do this."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brows are knitting together again and he wants to reach out so desperately to pull her in for a hug, reassure her things would be okay. Bringing both of his hands up to rub at his face, Tatum finds himself shaking his head. ''I'm the one who stuck around, I'm the one who wants to hear about your day and listen to you vent your frustrations..'' Trailing off to gather his thoughts some, Tatum's lips purse into a straight line as he conteplmates his words before he's finally murming. ''Yo soy la que está dispuesta a demostrar que no soy como las demás, porque sé que tú eres la única para mí. '' Motioning towards her as the confused expression relaxes into one of concern, moving a hand out towards her. ''I.. It might be easier like that, princesca... but I've learned the hard way its lonely.'' He murmurs as the hand finally comes to rest at her shoulder, giving a reassuring squeeze. ''Do you want.. '' Inhaling, Tatum finally continues on, both curious & hesitant to hear her answer. ''.. me to go? ''

It was never the plan she had for them. They were having fun, and it was the first time Elena was happy. He had been everything she wanted, and when that little stick turned blue, Elena let fear take over. Three years ago she packed a duffel in the middle of the night, kissed his head one last time, and left. This was easier than breaking the harsh news to him that they'd be parents at such a young age. It was painful to see their child grow up. The more he grew, the more he looked just like his father. Elena returned home months ago with the intent of telling him, but the sheer idea of seeing him once again was sending her into a full panic. There was no way she could do this. He'd hate her for keeping this from him for so long. Or would be thankful that she ran away when she did? Now, she sat in his driveway re-reading the texts from when she left. All unanswered. Elena glanced in her rearview mirror at her--their--child one last time before getting out of the car. "C'mon. We're going to meet someone new!" Each step towards his home was harder, but, soon enough, she was raising her fist to knock on his door.
